We’re taking mammograms to a whole new dimension. 3 - D MAM MOG R AM S

Now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital According to the American Cancer Society, the early detection of breast cancer saves thousands of lives each year. One of the newest tools in this effort is 3-D mammography, or tomosynthesis, which is now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital. 3-D mammograms allow physicians to take images from different angles, providing sharper, better quality results and a reduction in “false positives.” The new technology is recommended for women with dense breast tissue and allows physicians to view images with pinpoint accuracy in order to detect smaller tumors earlier. See if a mammogram is the answer for you. Call 281-637-7001 today for an appointment.

D

on’t let the two-story marble building fool you. Inside the doors await friendly people ready to show clients an extensive range of jewelry and prices. “We only look expensive,” said Jan Loggins, the J in J Loggins Jewelers. “As the years have gone by, we have made an effort to stay in touch with not only what is going on in the world of jewelry, but what is going on in our clients’ worlds. Our clients appreciate that, and they show their appreciation by continuing to help us grow.” TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

Fashion Forward For thirty years, J Loggins Jewelers has been an icon in the Fort Bend community. Known for their custom designs, superior quality and excellent customer service, the original Fort Bend jeweler is now expanding its focus to include high quality fashion jewelry to insure that they continue to meet all of their customers’ needs, both now and in the future. J Loggins’ new line of fashion pieces are in direct response to both clients’ desires and industry trends. Eighty percent of people agree that mixing fashion pieces with fine jewelry is fun and acceptable. “Customer service is our number one priority at J Loggins,” said Jan. “That is why it is so important for us to be able to provide our clients with a wide selection of options.” This expansion in focus for this independent jeweler, which is rare in an industry filled with chain jewelry stores, is helping J Loggins continue to evolve and expand both their services and jewelry lines. “Being an independent jeweler is extremely important to us,” said Jan, whose new fashion line features prices beginning at $25, allowing clients to purchase J Loggins at virtually any price point. “We want to be the place to shop for all of your jewelry from reasonable birthday bling for a friend to fine jewelry you’ll treasure forever.”

Holiday bling at J Loggins is affordable for everyone with their new fashion line.

Custom Creations Jan describes J Loggins as a “full service jewelry store,” and much of her success is in custom design. Well-known for their custom work, the store’s master jeweler, Omar Quinonez, has been with Jan for over twenty years, and he is a master craftsman able to sketch and create a jewelry masterpiece specifically designed to the client’s specifications. Jan’s famous quote, “If we can’t do it, it can’t be done!” can easily be attributed to the talents of Omar and her entire team. “Having experienced professionals like Omar whose only priority is providing clients with the best service is what makes our business such a success,” shared Jan.

Consignment Services Yet another aspect of the “full service jewelry store” concept that has made J Loggins successful is their consignment services. “Diversifying the services that we provide by adding consignment services for clients who have something they no longer wear has been very popular,” said Jan. For clients, the consignment services are a win-win. They can easily take unwanted valuables and turn them into cash.

Personalized Customer Service Whether clients are purchasing from the consignment pieces, the new fashion line or having custom jewelry designed, the rapport with her customers is always the priority for Jan. “At J Loggins, we feel a connection to the people we work with and to the people we serve. We have served as some of our clients’ jewelers for multiple generations.” fort bend

Master Craftsman, Master Repairs J Loggins offers an expansive repair service with a master craftsman, Omar Quinonez, who provides both repair and design services on site. When a piece is brought in for repair, staff photograph Omar Quinonez each piece to document the work and make sure clients feel comfortable that they are leaving their valuables in excellent hands. On site repair services at J Loggins include: Jewelry Repair Watch Repair Loose Diamonds and Gems Appraisals Engraving Restringing For more information, visit www.jloggins.com or call 281.242.2900.

Holiday Event Calendar

Heaven on earth is a halo of diamonds from J Loggins Jewelers.

Who needs a cocktail? With colored stone rings, earrings and designer bracelets by Steven Lagos, Sarah Blaine and John Hardy to shake up your collection or stir up conversation, J Loggins Jewelers can mix up something special for the holidays.

The rapport that Jan and her team build with clients not only keeps them coming back; it keeps J Loggins top of mind with their friends and family and with other area jewelers. Many Fort Bend area jewelers refer clients to J Loggins due to their expertise, professionalism and stellar reputation. “To me, it’s such a compliment when quality jewelry stores tell their clients that we are the only ones who can tackle certain repairs or designs. We acquire new clients on a weekly basis based on the referrals of our competitors and clients. That is a true testament to our reputation,” said Jan. Whether you purchase a $50 bracelet or a $50,000 diamond ring, a beautiful gift presentation is a tradition at J Loggins, part of the exemplary customer service that Jan and her team take great pride in providing to their clients. From the moment a client steps into their beautiful two-story building, the ladies of J Loggins are there to help. “At J Loggins, it’s about having fun in what we do and making the shopping experience as pleasurable as possible,” shared Jan. “We treat everyone equally as valued customers and will always give the best service we can in whatever we do from creating a memorable keepsake to wrapping it up beautifully.”

Ready, Set, Glow for the Holidays This holiday season, J Loggins’ mantra is: “Ready, set, glow for the holidays!” With an ongoing mission to be the independent jeweler in Fort Bend for everyone, J Loggins continues to evolve and expand their services and jewelry lines, and their success is best summed up in what Jan calls her golden rule: “We are in business because clients continue to need us and believe in us.” And with such a range of services and prices, the store that “only looks expensive” will continue to do what they do best: provide exemplary service and products to their clients at all price points – just in time for the holidays!

Prepared by the Hardee Investment Group and RBC Wealth Management

FOCU$ on FINANCE

I

n Part One, printed last month, we introduced Dr. Kathleen Gurney’s perspective on emotional investing. She is a psychologist specializing in psychodynamics of money management and investing, and the Hardee Investment Group and Dr. Gurney share the same thoughts when in comes to emotions driving investment decisions. In the previous article, Dr. Gurney boldly stated the majority of investment losses are not a result of a poor market place but rather from emotional and attitudinal causes. She went on to say investing, in and of itself, is an emotional business, and there are few investors who can readily control the emotions associated with the business. Below Dr. Gurney provides some tactics to help manage the emotions associated with market highs and lows. The field of behavioral finance has given insight into some mental miscues investors make that might sabotage and crimp their returns: Fear of Losing Money: Psychologically, people give greater weight to a past loss than they do to a future gain. In fact, some individuals find losing money so distasteful that they talk themselves out of investing altogether. Some investors don’t make reasonable trade-offs because the drive to avoid loss sabotages any future gains or opportunities. Possible Solution: Determine ahead of time exactly how much you can “emo-

Emotional Investing: Part Two

tionally” afford to lose as well as “financially.” They are often very different. Worrying About the Wrong Risks: Investors are held captive by events that could be conceived as unpredictable or frightening events. People are traumatized by dramatic events. They can’t tolerate the anxiety that accompanies them. Investors often become blind and deaf to others’ advice in these times and tune out advice from others, including their financial professionals. They exaggerate current crises. What’s worse is that they forget the wisdom of lessons from the past. They overlook the fact that people who stayed fully invested during previous crashes recouped their losses. Possible Solution: Base your decisions on what you can control, not on those factors you can’t control. Review the rationale for your current strategy, and ask yourself if you feel it still makes sense based on everything you and they know at the time. If it does, review why the strategy still makes sense from time to time so you can help regulate any impulsive and emotional reactions that may bring you off course. As you evaluate your investment strategies and investors’ individual situ-

ations, consider these points: • Investors are more prone to make or lose money as a function of their emotions and attitudes than on the basis of their stock selection or trading system. • The best system can be rendered a losing proposition by inappropriate implementation due to emotional and behavioral limitations. • Appropriate or successful investor behavior can be learned to a large extent. Education is essential to helping investors stay in control and continue to grow, particularly in learning self-regulation and self-control. Copyright Kathleen Gurney, Ph.D, CEO Financial Psychology Corporation. Dr. Gurney’s words couldn’t be truer. Natural Approaches For Eliminating Arthritis

o you find you are experiencing pain in your joints? Are your knees, shoulders, hips or hands causing you discomfort? Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease in which the cartilage breaks down causing pain, swelling and loss of motion in the joint.1 It is common for most people to experience symptoms of OA by the time they are 80 years old; however, many experience these life altering symptoms in their 40s or 50s. The cause of OA is multi-factorial. Lack of exercise and poor diet play the largest role. What you may not know about Osteoarthritis is that most medications only offer you a solution to the symptoms and not a path to improving the condition. The current treatment of Osteoarthritis is based primarily on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesics.2 Examples include aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxin™, Celebrex™ and Diclofenac.™ There are disadvantages to routinely using these prescription and over the counter drugs. Some of them contribute to nutritional deficiencies of folic acid, iron and vitamin C. This can lead to secondary problems. The side effects from these medications can range from slight to severe. Nausea, abdominal pain, heart burn, headaches, rash, diarrhea, liver damage, chest pain and vomiting are all possible.3 Included

in this type of prescribed treatment is the fact that these medicines have been shown to reduce the ability of our body to create cartilage. Therefore, the treatments may actually perpetuate the condition rather than assisting the joints in healing and recovery.4 Research confirms that natural treatments for OA can be more effective than the commonly prescribed medications.5-8 Some common options include omega-3 derived epa and dha, proteolytic enzymes, glucosamine, chondroitin, SAM-e and tumeric. The key in determining which options would be effective lies in adequate laboratory testing and history. We must not lose sight on the foundational role that diet plays. Studies show that diets high in hydrogenated oils and other processed foods actually inhibit healing and worsen the symptoms of OA. Most cases of OA can be relieved indefinitely with simple alterations to diet and lifestyle. Additionally, a number of low impact exercise programs are available. Many tend to discontinue exercise when experiencing joint pain. Often times, this is a big mistake. Cartilage in the joint does not have a direct blood supply and will deteriorate in the absence of movement. Use it or lose it! While modern medicine continues to focus on symptoms, natural and functional medicine focuses on the causes

of the disease. Addressing dietary and nutritional deficiencies can help the joint structure by increasing compounds that aid in the development of cartilage.5-8 The best way to identify these issues is through individualized genetic and laboratory tests, a thorough physical examination and a meticulously detailed history. How to use the information to promote health is where functional medicine and traditional methods may differ. Functional medicine is best described as putting the patient at the core of the treatment plan. The emphasis is patient-centric and focuses on diet, environment and natural treatments that work with the body to aid in healing. Traditional medicine focuses on pharmaceuticals as the core of treatment and typically does not adequately address the foundational issues of health and wellness. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital Plans Major Expansion

A

s Fort Bend County continues to lead the state in population growth, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital is making plans for that growth with a $93 million Campus expansion. The three-phase project begins with renovations and technology additions to the current facility, followed by construction of a 100,000-square-foot professional office building and culminating with a new 120,000-square-foot patient tower. “The hospital’s service area is projected to grow rapidly over the next five years,” said CEO Greg Haralson. “It’s important for our hospital to grow with the community in order to continue providing our patients with quality care.” Phase one of the project, slated to begin later this year, will add eight beds to the Emergency Center, expanding capacity to 26 beds. It will also add a new surgical suite with full digital integration affording surgeons access to patients’ records and imaging studies within the operating room. This phase also includes shell space for four future surgical suites. Technology additions include a new MRI and an upgraded CT scanner. Completion of this phase is expected in 2014. Phase two of the project, a professional office building, is the second of its kind on Memorial Hermann Sugar Land’s Campus. Located to the west of Medical Plaza 1, the new structure

will provide 100,000 square feet of combined physician offices, expanded sports medicine and rehabilitation services, along with outpatient imaging. Groundbreaking is set for November 2013 with completion during the summer of 2014. Phase three of the project, expected to begin in the fall of 2014, adds a sixstory patient tower on the northeast corner of the hospital grounds. When completed in early 2016, it will increase the hospital’s total bed count to 141. ICU beds will increase to 14 and an intermediate care unit will add 16 beds. Another 30 beds will bring the total to 60 new beds during this phase of the expansion. The tower’s structural composition

will allow the addition of four more floors to accommodate future growth. Other space in the tower includes preadmission and education areas, as well as a self-contained endoscopy suite offering patients a one-stop location for endoscopy procedures. “We are seeing more esophageal and colon cancers being diagnosed in the area,” said Haralson. “This endoscopy suite will serve as the foundation for a digestive disease center, bringing patients and subspecialty physicians together in one place for diagnosis and treatment.” This is the hospital’s first major expansion since opening in 2006 and promises the addition of more medical subspecialties on Campus. With the opening of the patient tower, the hospital anticipates adding 160 to 180 new employee partners. “This expansion project is a testament to all members of the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land family who consistently work toward advancing the health of those we serve every day,” said Malisha Patel, chief operations officer. “We are excited to engage our physicians, employees and community as we build a tower with this vision in mind.”

were part of the delegation from Fort Bend County. “The MOU provides for the exchange of views on issues of common interest, as well as the exploration of possible collaborative projects that will benefit both Fort Bend County and Foshan City,” said Judge Bob Hebert. Foshan is a modern city located in the northern part of Hong Kong with a long history dating back to approximately 1,500 years and a current population of one million residents.

The second trip was also to Foshan in November 2012 for meetings with business and educational leaders and a Friendship Agreement was signed. Judge Bob Hebert, Michael Liu, Jason Sheng, Allison Wen and Jeffrey Wiley were part of the Fort Bend County delegation on the second trip. Fort Bend County has also hosted delegates, several business, educational and medical groups from Foshan over the last two years. A second MOU was signed

am excited to introduce our readers to Fort Bend’s very own Global Initiatives, a non-profit organization that assists in raising the profile of Fort Bend County internationally. The goal of Global Initiatives is to work with communities overseas to provide opportunities for cultural, educational and business exchanges for Fort Bend County. The initial efforts began in 2010 when Fort Bend County Judge Bob Hebert formed the Fort Bend County Friendship Committee. This was a group organized to strengthen relationships both within the community and internationally to foster business development. Considering China’s increasing economic strength, coupled with the significant participation of Chinese-American Friendship Committee members, the group chose to initially focus on areas of China with which to establish this business relationship. “The Friendship Committee is comprised of Fort Bend residents, as well as industry and government representatives,” said Allison Wen, Chairman of the Global Initiative. Due to great prospects for Fort Bend, two trips thus far have been made to China. The first was in November 2011 to execute a Sister Community agreement with the Chancheng District of Foshan, China. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Judge Bob Hebert and Liu Donghau, CEO of the Chancheng District, to further facilitate communications and cooperation in areas of economics and trade, culture and sport, and environmental protection. between the two communities in Fort Bend last year. A Global Initiatives delegation also made history in September 2013 when they traveled to Turkey and were joined by members of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce (FBCC). The FBCC signed agreements with the Ankara Chamber of Industry, the Adana Chamber of Commerce, the Kocaeli Chamber of Industry and the Kahramanmaras Chamber of Commerce. The purpose was to enhance mutual understanding and friendship and develop friendly cooperation and consultation on strengthening the communication in education and training, environmental protection, cultural exchange and other areas on which both parties have mutually beneficial interests. The delegation to Turkey included Jeffrey Blodgett, Chris Breaux, Jeffrey DiLeo, Bob Hebert, Fheryl Prestage, Grady Prestage, Keri Schmidt and Allison Wen. The efforts to create Global Initiative arose out of a desire to gain major benefits from the diversity of the Fort Bend County population. The team felt confident that cultural and economic benefits will be rapidly forthcoming from each outreach and predicts that business and economic development benefits will also emerge over time. Since the focus is on cultural, economic and educational development rather than government services, no tax dollars are spent on any Global Initiative activities. Expenses not covered by the host country are paid for by Global Initiatives or by individual participants. The Chairman and board of directors of Global Initiatives have been successful in raising sufficient funding to keep activities at a high level. The Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council was instrumental in getting Global Initiatives up and running and is prepared to work with any business prospects identified. With this assistance, Global Initiatives can focus on the international networking required for long-term success. Global Initiatives looks forward to many beneficial opportunities coming up that will promote Fort Bend County in the best way possible.

A

friend of mine, Lydia Harlacher, emailed me recently and invited me to a celebration lunch. Yet, it was not her birthday or anniversary. She told me she had been experiencing extreme depression and had finally found a treatment that worked for her. On our way to lunch, she told me what she had been going through. “Two months ago, I fell deep into a pit of emotional and spiritual darkness. This place was filled with overwhelming despair and an inconsolable sadness. I was experiencing the worst episode of depression in the almost 30 years of suffering with this mental illness,” Lydia explained. She bravely told me how at one point last summer, she didn’t want to feel the pain anymore and chose to swallow and a handful of antidepressants. “When I finally awakened many hours later, I realized the seriousness of my condition. I thanked God for sparing my life, and shortly after, I found myself googling ‘alternative treatments for depression.’ I’m convinced that di-

vine intervention played a big part in my finding Dr. Kimberly Cress and the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy she offers to treat major depression. You see, it was her name that popped up prominently on the screen on that fateful day,” related Lydia. TMS is a non-invasive therapy in which a magnet is placed on the left front portion of the head and targets the area of the brain that is less active as a result of the depression. “As the magnet is pulsing on and off, we get an electrical current. Then, the nerves fire and release neurotransmitters. We are able to stimulate the release of chemicals such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine,” explained Dr. Cress. This type of treatment is especially valuable for patients who have found antidepressants ineffective or the side effects too severe. Lydia said, “For the most part, medication would be effective for a while, and then over time, I would find myself sinking into depression. It has been a

vicious cycle of trying different drugs to keep the depression at bay. Tied to every new drug came undesirable side effects: insomnia, inability to concentrate, mental fog, fatigue, weight gain, etc.” After meeting with Dr. Cress and her assistants Beth Landry and Roxane Zotyka, Lydia was found to be an excellent candidate for TMS therapy. Her course of treatment would include five sessions a week for seven weeks. “After only five treatments, I began to feel like the mental fog was lifting, and I experienced deliciously restful sleep. With every treatment came pleasantly surprising experiences – more energy, laughter, listening to music, interest in going out again, dancing and a sense of peace.” TMS has been FDA-cleared for major depression since 2008 and may also relieve anxiety problems. It is even being looked into for other applications, such as post traumatic stress. Lydia completed TMS therapy on September 11th. She gathered her friends around her for the last session and then, treated everyone to a celebration lunch. “I will forever be grateful to Dr. Cress, Beth and Roxane for making me well. Aside from administering the TMS treatments, these three remarkable women were compassionate, caring and kind throughout my journey to mental and emotional health. It was this holistic approach that took me from a place of darkness, fear and despair to one filled with God’s light, peace, hope and joy,” expressed Lydia. Lydia also credits her recovery to her loving husband, Gene, her family and friends. It is her wish and prayer that her story will help others who suffer from depression.

Handling By Teresa Cox Reading, RN

S

o often our patients and even friends ask, “How do I handle the holidays?” Specifically, how do I handle the holidays if I am stressed, alone, lonely, fearful, overwhelmed, have high expectations with low performance, am dealing with family problems and conflict, etc.? Many times, the holidays and depression, or just feeling down, go hand in hand. The constant excitement that many share can, in others, signal a panic of feeling impending doom. The holidays are supposed to be a time of cheer, celebration and family, right? Well, yes, but it all has to start with you. Yes, you. First of all, be prepared, and be mindful. Know your internal conversation, and be mindful of your feelings and emotions. It helps to know what feelings are, what emotions are and the differences. Feelings are the products of one’s emotions. Feelings, these ebb and flow products, are stable, low-key and sustained

Holiday Stress

over a time period. Feelings include: happiness, worry, contentment, bitterness, love and depression. Emotions are intense and temporary. They tell us what we like and don’t like. They include: joy, fear, anger, lust, enthusiasm and sadness. Your sustained feeling of worry about the holidays might generate a temporary emotion of fear. But, if you are not mindful, it is hard to pinpoint what it is we are saying to ourselves. Understanding all of this can lead to positive changes, especially around this time of year. Individuals can start to take control, and if they need assistance, there are professionals who can help to get you on the right track. Some helpful hints for the holidays are: Take care of yourself. You have to take care of yourself first. Ask for help. This is a “biggie” as it is hard for most people to ask for help. Get plenty of sleep. Sleepless nights can cause so many other problems and

make dealing with situations so difficult. Without proper rest, we can get grumpy, short-tempered and be more susceptible to illness. Lower expectations. Yes, this is hard to do but sometimes is just necessary. It will all still be okay if you go out to eat versus having 20 family members over. Have a treat one year to enjoy your company, and relax a bit. Don’t over schedule yourself. Yes, those lists will still be there. Pace yourself, especially if you tend to be an overachiever. You know who you are. Don’t over-buy. January is right around the corner and so are your routine costs. Money and gifts do not equal love. Maybe set aside a time to give of yourself with a shared project, reading a book to your child, some mom and me time, etc. If you or someone you know is struggling with the holiday blues, contact William H. Reading, MD at 281-494-4471 or visit www.DrReading.com.

Be Inspired By Traditions From Around The World

B

ring the joy and celebration of holiday traditions from around the world to your home this season. From the quaint custom of placing hand-painted luminaries in windows throughout Ireland to the beautiful nutcracker wreaths found in Germany, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores has created craft projects inspired by traditions from around the world to share with your loved ones.

Hand-Painted Holiday Luminaries

I

t’s an Irish tradition to place lit candles in windows. Let this quaint holiday custom add warmth and joy to your home. Glass containers with hand-painted designs and flameless candles look welcoming in windows or on a table. Supplies and Tools: Black marker White computer paper Computer and printer Provided templates Scissors Square and rectangular glass containers Tape Enamel paint: red, green and white Flat brush Detail brush Flameless or wax candles

Create templates using a black marker to draw snowflakes and other decorative holiday motifs on paper. Visit www.joann. com/luminarytemplate to print out additional templates. Cut the templates to fit inside the desired glass containers. Tape templates securely to the inside of glass container with design facing out. This will act as a guide when painting. Using enamel paint colors, paint over template designs on glass surface. Create snowflakes, trees, words, deer, etc. It may take several coats of paint to attain desired coverage. Let paint dry between coats. When finished, let the painted design dry completely. Remove templates from the inside of containers. Fill the container with flameless or wax candles to display.

HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING & DINING Embrace the Parental Chaos When the kids are screaming and fighting, be thankful for the little bundles of joy. Know that they are learning how to socialize, and who better to try out a new attitude on than your sibling? After all, they don’t fight all the time, and they sure look like angels when they are asleep.

Manage Your Time and Money As the overwhelming feeling of no time to take care of minute things such as paying bills, be thankful for the ability to pay bills. Remember that simply paying bills and meeting basic needs feels like a luxury to many.

Being Thankful

Holiday Meal Preparations Require Patience

By Stephenie Cox

T

he holidays are upon us – such a busy, festive time of year. I love Thanksgiving most of all. There are no gifts, there are no big parties, only families and friends getting together and appreciating what God has done for us. It is a wonderful time to reconnect, forgive those who have harmed you, hug those who have stood by you, and most of all, to have an inner peace that everything is going to be okay. The Thanksgiving feast is a picture of abundance. Fall vegetables and fruits take their honorary place on the table being prepared to show off their flavor. Just the right turkey is selected after much debate on whether it should be roasted, fried or smoked. Old family recipes and new ideas from your favorite cooking show meld together into the hope for a delicious feast. But this year, let us go into Thanksgiving with a spirit of gratitude. Thanksgiving is more than the beautiful table setting and fabulous meal. Here are a few thoughts on being thankful:

Don’t Take the Ordinary for Granted When you are stuck in traffic, and the little hairs on the back of your neck are standing up, be thankful that you have a car, that you can afford to put gas in your car and that you are not standing at a bus stop as the storm rolls in. It is truly a joy to have your own transportation, your own comfortable cocoon getting you from one place to another.

Recognize the Blessings When your teens or young adults are going through tough trials, be thankful for the life lessons they are getting. Without those lessons, how will they ever get to be the wonderful person God intended them to be? These trials are blessings as they grow into themselves and become part of the adult world.

When shopping for the Thanksgiving Feast and the grocery store is hectic, out of what you need, the check-out line is unbelievably long and the person at the counter reaches deep into their bag to get their checkbook and slowly write their check in their best handwriting, try patience. Instead of wanting to discuss what debit cards are for or getting upset with the clerk because your favorite bread is out of stock, take three deep breaths, close your eyes and be thankful that food is so readily and abundantly available. Be thankful that you can afford to fill your basket with delicious foods for your family. Remember, there are many who go hungry.

Extend a Helping Hand Most of all, know that with much blessing comes much responsibility. Be thankful to have the energy, the resources and the time to help others. Big or small, every little helping hand is important. Know that there are people out there that a smile could work wonders for. You never know what is going on inside of them or what trials they are going through. So, whatever your giving ability may be, be thankful you have been blessed to be a blessing.

absolutely! HEALTHY LIVING

Exercise Dos and Don’ts for Staying Fit and Cancer-Free

E

ver heard that exercise can replace a bad diet or crunches can create six-pack abs? Exercise myths like these have been around for decades. But this fact remains clear: exercise is one of the best things a person can do to lower his or her risk for many cancers. This includes colon, breast and endometrial cancers. Further, regular exercise can help people maintain a healthy weight, reduce stress and strengthen their immune system. It also curbs a person’s risk of diabetes and heart disease. MD Anderson senior exercise physiologist Carol Harrison busts the most common exercise myths to help readers get the best cancerfighting body exercise has to offer.

Myth: Fat burn can be targeted. Truth: Working out can reduce overall fat, but people can’t control what part of their body burns the most fat. “Your body breaks down fat and uses it as fuel when you exercise,” Harrison said. “But your body’s not picky. It will burn fat from anywhere in your body, not just the part you’re working the most.”

Myth: Lifting heavy weights bulks up women. Truth: Lifting weights tones and shapes the body; it doesn’t create the look of a bodybuilder. “Women have low levels of testosterone, so they don’t naturally build mas-

sive muscles,” Harrison said. “There is nothing wrong with a woman pushing up to 200 pounds on a leg press if she can do it.” Lifting weights can prevent loss of muscle mass, help build bone density and increase the rate at which the body burns calories to maintain a healthy weight. And, maintaining a healthy weight can help fight off diseases like cancer.

Myth: Crunches are the best moves for your core. Truth: “Crunches are one of the least effective core exercises because they don’t get rid of belly fat,” Harrison said. To shed the extra jiggle, Harrison suggests increasing cardio workouts and adding resistance training that targets the entire core. It’s important to trim excess belly fat because it can increase a person’s chances of getting heart disease and certain cancers. It also raises a person’s risk for metabolic diseases like diabetes.

Myth: Exercise can erase a bad diet. Truth: “Exercise by no means makes up for a bad diet,” Harrison said. Diet and nutrition play a larger role than exercise in weight management and cancer prevention. In fact, some foods actually help protect against certain cancers.

Myth: When a person stops strength training, their muscle turns to fat. Truth: Muscle can’t turn into fat, just as fat can’t transform into muscle. “Fat and muscle are two different types of tissue,” Harrison said. When a person stops strength training, he or she loses muscle mass and his or her metabolism slows down. A sluggish metabolism means the body is burning fewer calories at rest, which can lead to weight gain. Being overweight or obese increases the risks for colon, pancreatic, kidney, endometrial, gallbladder, esophageal and breast cancers.

Myth: It is necessary to spend hours in the gym. Truth: “A person can get all the benefits of exercise whether he’s at the gym or at home,” Harrison said. The key is to exercise smarter, not longer. “To get the most out of a workout, strength train before doing aerobic exercises,” Harrison said. Here’s why: During a workout, the body activates its limited supply of carbohydrates first. This is the best fuel for short-term and intense exercise, like strength training. After the body has depleted its carbohydrate storage, it starts using fat for fuel. And fat is the best fuel for aerobic exercise. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, like brisk walking and slow swimming, each week to reduce cancer risks. Or choose more vigorous activities, like running and fast bicycling, for at least 75 minutes each week.

Myth: Stretch before exercising. Truth: It’s more effective to stretch after exercise when muscles and joints are warm. “Stretching before has little to no benefit,” Harrison said. Stretching after can improve performance and flexibility and helps maintain a healthy range of motion in joints. Stretching also can reduce stress, decrease muscle tension, and improve circulation and posture. “The more fit you are, the better chance you have to fight off diseases like cancer,” Harrison said. “So, focus on the true dos and don’ts of exercise, and get moving.” For additional tips on health and exercise, visit www.mdanderson. org/focused.

2013 ACURA RDX T

he Acura RDX is an unsung hero of the compact luxury crossover segment. Long hiding in the shadows behind its more popular competitors, the RDX deserves much more respect. And, with a total makeover for the 2013 model year, expect to see more of these Acuras popping up in your neighbor’s driveways. It’s always been a fun car to drive. But now, it’s roomier and far more fuel efficient. The first generation Acura RDX was a bit of late-comer to the market when it came on the scene in 2006. By that time, the other luxury brands had already introduced a compact crossover and breaking into a crowded field was difficult for the RDX. As a result, it has always lagged behind in sales. And, although it’s Honda’s cousin, the CRV,

the RDX comes across as a very different machine. The 2013 RDX is a big step up from the old model with new styling, a roomier interior plus a bigger, more fuel efficient engine. The folks at Acura have done a great job with this new vehicle. First off, let’s take a look at the powertrain. The old four-cylinder turbo-charged engine has been replaced with a non-turbo 273 hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine. Mated with a new six-speed transmission, this Acura delivers an EPA estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway and will get you from 0-60 in six and a half seconds. The Acura engineers are able to deliver better fuel economy with a larger engine due to cylinder deactivation while in cruising mode. The new RDX also has a different all-wheel drive system called “AWD with Intelligent Control” that serves up a smoother ride along with better fuel economy. The RDX exterior reflects a toneddown futuristic design trend that

reached across the Acura model lineup. It’s different but not off-putting. The interior, however, is roomy and inviting with loads of technology that’s easy to grasp without poring through an owner’s manual. Even buying a new Acura RDX is simplified due to their pricing packages. Instead of opting for a base vehicle, and then, adding individual options, the RDX is sold in one of four packages starting with a base MSRP of $34,520, then adding a load of options for the higher trims ending with a fully loaded top trim. It’s a refreshing way to buy a new car. Follow Steve Kursur at KursarOnCars. blogspot.com.

MEDICAL FOCUS

Surgery for Patient’s Paralyzed Face Improves Quality of Life Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is proud to announce its first facial reanimation and rehabilitation surgery for a paralyzed face. The procedure was performed by Dr. Jon Mathy, board certified plastic surgeon on staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Gerald Goehring had been living with a paralyzed face for about a year. “When Mr. Goehring first came to see me, he was miserable,” said Dr. Mathy. “Treatment of an aggressive skin cancer required sacrifice of the nerve that allows him to move the entire right side of his face. He was grateful to have his cancer behind him, but his quality of life was poor.” “Without muscle tone to counteract gravity, his lower eyelid slid down his cheek leaving the white of his eye constantly exposed and irritated. His cheek had fallen into his nose obstructing his breathing, and the corner of his mouth had fallen causing constant drooling. He was unhappy with his appearance and had lost the ability to express emotion with half his face.” Dr. Mathy completed the first of a series of procedures to address these problems in early November 2012. “We sought to improve both form and function in all parts of his face. For his drooping eyebrow, we performed a brow lift. We helped him regain eyelid closure with a modified blepharoplasty, an operation to correct defects of the eyelid, including transferring a piece of cartilage from inside his nose to help prop up his sagging lower eyelid. We opened up his nasal airway by resuspending his cheek with a deep plane facelift.” “His lips had descended so far he was experiencing oral incompetence. He was having problems eating, and he had no ability to smile. For this, we did a functional muscle transfer. We borrowed

a working muscle from another part of his face and transferred it to the corner of his mouth. This is a great procedure because it resuspends his lips and restores the capacity to move his mouth. It allows him to smile,” said Mathy. “I already look and feel better,” said Goehring. “Dr. Mathy and the staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital provided me with amazing care, before and after the surgery. It’s been lifechanging for me.” Dr. Mathy’s unique background and experience allowed him to tailor Goehring’s treatment. Our faces are so important for our sense of self, for engaging socially, and for supporting vision, breathing and eating. “It is gratifying to offer procedures that can help improve normal facial form and function,” said Dr. Mathy. In both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, the goal is all about improving the patient’s quality of life. “It’s been

wonderful to give him back a sense of normalcy and to offer continuity of care so close to home,” said Mathy. In addition to cancer patients like Goehring, other patients with facial asymmetry or paralysis due to stroke, trauma or congenital deformities can benefit from this type of surgery. Born and raised in Sugar Land, Dr. Mathy takes great pride in his community. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Duke University, his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, plastic surgery training at Harvard Medical School and additional fellowship training in head and neck surgery and microvascular surgery, Dr. Mathy returned to Sugar Land to be with his family and serve his community. MEDICAL FOCUS

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital First in Fort Bend to Use PFO Closure As a baby develops in the womb, a hole in its heart provides oxygen-rich blood from the mother. This hole usually closes naturally when the baby is born. However, about 25 percent of the time, it does not close and becomes known as a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO). Most people do not experience any symptoms with a PFO and grow up without knowing they have one. However, in some instances, a PFO may contribute to a stroke or a heart attack. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is the first in Fort Bend County to offer the minimally invasive PFO closure procedure to prevent recurrent strokes and heart attacks. “Most people with PFO go through life and never have a problem,” said Dr.

B. Keith Ellis, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and fellowshiptrained, PFO closure expert at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “But, there’s a subset of people in the population that may have a stroke, and we cannot find the cause, otherwise known as a cryptogenic stroke. There is an increased incidence of PFO in patients with cryptogenic stroke. Some of our patients that have had multiple cryptogenic strokes and have failed medical therapy may be candidates for closure of PFO.” As an alternative to open heart surgery, PFO closure is relatively painless and does not require surgical incisions. During the procedure, a catheter is used to guide the placement of the PFO closure device, which resembles a tiny um-

brella, which becomes a permanent implant that closes the hole in the patient’s heart wall. Patients are able to go home one day after the procedure and can go back to work and everyday activities in three to five days. “The procedure was painless,” said Errol Lewis, a patient of Dr. Ellis’, who recently had a successful PFO closure procedure at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “My shortness of breath and other symptoms related to my stroke have improved.” To make an appointment with Dr. Ellis or another cardiologist with Methodist Diagnostic Cardiology of Houston, call 713.776.9500 or for more information visit methodistsugarlanddocs.com.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Honors Outstanding Nurse with DAISY Award Phillip Fisher, RN, is Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s DAISY Award winner, a national honor that recognizes the contributions of extraordinary nurses. Phillip is a nurse in the ICU department who was nominated by the wife of one of his patients. In the wife’s nomination, she described that while caring for her husband, Phillip and the other nurses all demonstrated knowledge and skills while easing her husband’s discomfort and calming him down when he showed signs of fear. However, she went on to explain her reason for nominating Phillip in particular. “While caring for my husband, Phillip revealed his compassion for human suffering and the feelings of his patient’s close family members when facing many uncertainties,” she said. “He tirelessly and gently cared for my husband and always made sure that he felt comfortable. Phillip demonstrated the soft side of a human being. He also took his time to answer questions that had not been thoroughly explained. He showed my husband and our family the

highest degree of compassion and offered uplifting words when he knew they were needed.” “Phillip embodies the values we strive for,” said Janet Leatherwood, Chief Nursing Officer of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “He is a constant example of a nurse who is truly passionate about being a nurse and helping others.” In honor of his DAISY Award selection, Phillip received a certificate of appreciation, a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe. DAISY Award winner each quarter. The DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses inspired this unique award as a way of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. Today, more than 1,300 hospitals across the U.S. participate in the program. “We are proud to be among the hospitals participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Leatherwood. “Nurses like Phillip are everyday heroes who demonstrate excellence through clinical expertise and compassionate care, and we are excited to be able to recognize him – and our future winners – as outstanding role models for the nursing profession.” Visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland to learn more about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital or FB.com/MethodistSugarLand to congratulate Phillip on his award.

High School HOT SHOT

By Lauren Dante Benoit

Kaitlin and Keira Tademy: A Dynamic Duo

K

aitlin and Keira Tademy are seniors at Bush High School. As twin sisters, they already look alike; however, their personal interests closely align as well. The Tademy twins make similar grades, are enrolled in the International Business and Marketing Academy and serve as officers on the Dance Team. These young ladies are two peas in a pod and quite a dynamic duo. As students in the top 15% of their graduating class, Kaitlin and Keira have challenging schedules. “My favorite class has been calculus because I love math,” said Keira. “Math is needed in many aspects of life, and it is interesting to learn how calculus fits into everyday life.” Both girls are in Calculus AP and have filled their schedules with a variety of classes throughout their high school career, including business classes, to help them succeed in the future. The Tademy twins applied to the International Business and Marketing Academy in eighth grade to learn more about the business world. “I wasn’t sure which path to choose,” said Kaitlin. “However, I like giving my opinions and suggestions, and the marketing emphasis has given me the opportunity to voice my opinion in a constructive manner.” “In our Sports and Entertainment Marketing class, we heard this story about Johnny the Bagger, a grocery store employee,” said Keira. “He wrote inspirational quotes on customer’s bags to prove that no matter where you are, you can make a difference in someone’s life.” This particu-

Kaitlin & Keira lar class has taught the twins about the basics of marketing and the impact that marketing can have on individuals. The twin’s interest in business led them to join Distributed Educational Clubs of America (DECA), an extracurricular activity. In this organization, the ladies increased their knowledge of the marketing industry. Through weekly cookie sales, the ladies were able to understand expenses, supply and demand and shrinkage. In addition to business, the ladies found their passion for dance in high school. Kaitlin and Keira started dancing in ninth grade and currently serve as the Captain and Co-Captain of the Illusions Dance Team at Bush. “As Captain of the dance team, I have learned to believe in myself and be confident in my abilities,” said Kaitlin. “People think that being Captain is easy, but it is a lot of pressure because you are expected to be the best.” “At times, being an officer is stressful,” said Keira. “However, it has been extremely beneficial because it has taught us discipline, patience and perspective.”

During their junior year, their first year as officers for the team, the ladies began working with a new director. As officers, they won many awards for their lyrical, modern and jazz officer routines last year. One of the ladies’ favorite memories from contest season is when they won a national award for their hip-hop ensemble. “Our hip-hop ensemble was a high energy piece,” said Keira. “It had a girly part, a hardhitting part and even choreographed hand-stands that really excited the crowd.” Kaitlin and Keira hope to excite the crowd with their solos this year. Keira enjoys modern and contemporary styles that allow her to express her emotions with serious and intense movements. Kaitlin, on the other hand, prefers more upbeat and stylized movements. Her solo will probably be a novelty or jazz dance. The ladies will be choreographing their own solos and competing with them during the upcoming contest season. After high school, the twins are interested in attending the University of Texas or Sam Houston State University. Kaitlin would like to major in biology and minor in dance. Her ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician. Keira would like to become an occupational therapist. Through both of these professions, the ladies will be able to fulfill their dream of helping others feel happy and healthy. From their business academy expertise to their dance team leadership, Kaitlin and Keira are mature, creative and compassionate young ladies. We wish them a successful senior year!

Living the Sweet Life:

By Alisa Murray www.AlisaMurray.com Nationally recognized portrait artist and awardwinning columnist.

We are family, my brother and my sister and me!

O

kay, start humming We Are Family by Sister Sledge. I can’t help myself and for only just a moment, I am truly sorry! If there was a song to describe the summer of 2013, it would be this one and a blast from the past as they say. It all started with me doing what I am sure all big sisters do, which is to open their homes up to their siblings in need. My sister decided, after much trepidation and planning, to move to Sugar Land. Many things needed to come together to make her transition work, and I knew I would be a key player in smoothing things over and assisting her in this life change. What I had not quite expected was to also host our brother, his wife and their two children as well. By mid-June, Brian and I found ourselves at the helm of a family ship so to speak, with exactly six adults and six children under our care. And, although it seemed a little overwhelming at times and a little crazy too, it proved to be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with my siblings in a way that never could have happened any other way. I mean, really, let’s be serious. At no point in the past 20 something years had Brian and I had more than a few days at best with “family.” This was not done necessarily on purpose but actually just happened since we moved to Texas, and they stayed in North Carolina. The dependence that coming into our home placed on them proved to be both a great chance to connect, as well as a hornet’s nest to erupt from childhood’s past experiences. Walter thought for a few moments that he would be “in charge,” then Elizabeth felt the need to remind all of us about days from our childhood. You know, how I was always so bossy... blah blah blah... I then reminded the two of them of who was the boss, after all, who’s house had they moved into? Ahem. Unfortunately, the first few weeks were a little painful, mainly because those two refused to “get it” the first time! Then, came the pecking order of the cousins with two at 15, three at 10 and one, bless his heart, at a mere 6. You should have seen us at church taking up an entire pew! It was both overwhelming and fabulous, and secretly, I loved every minute of it!

Siblings Elizabeth, Alisa and Walter.

By the end of July, Elizabeth had been hired, her children were starting to get accustomed to a new way of life, and our brother despite all of our efforts, never found a job. He and his wife packed up and headed back to North Carolina in the hopes of finding work there. The summer of 2013 was one to go down in history. We did not spend tons of time and money away at specialty camps or traveling. My siblings and I spent quality time actually reconnecting with each other and learning who each of us had become as adults. It was wonderful! None of us realize how quickly we are living our lives until we stop and take time to reflect. I am thankful for having had the summer of 2013. It was filled with many God winks! I am also grateful for my siblings, and the moments we have shared. Pictures are obviously very, very important to me. These images we captured I will cherish for the rest of my life! Happy Thanksgiving and, of course, Take Care of YOU!
