How Do You Pick A Dentist? Ask These 10 Questions To Make Sure Your Dentist Stacks Up Does your dentist have an intra-oral camera?

Does your dentist still use a drill?

1 Does your dentist check for cavities with a precise laser? With a painless laser, we can detect cavities 2 earlier than the eye can see them. The laser scanner can detect new cavities years before any other means of cavity detection.

Does your dentist recommend extractions for crowded teeth?

3 Give your child a full smile for life. No Extractions-Orthodontics with convenient, no hassle after school appointments as late as 6:30 p.m. Does your dentist offer before & after work appointments?

6 An intra-oral camera is so small it fits in your mouth and displays your teeth on a 20” TV. The doctor can see your teeth magnified at 50 times! Low cost way to find out what’s wrong

A $25.00 flat fee for an x-ray & consultation A $74.00 value

Does your dentist have movie goggles for your viewing pleasure?

7

Movie Goggles? Yes, a big screen TV right in front of your eyes while you are getting your dental work done. A movie passes the time quickly and takes you far away from the dental chair.

Does your dentist offer 12 months no interest?

8

We work with our patients to provide easy payment options with no interest. This frees you from using those high interest credit cards.

Call us now!

Before & After work appointments that fit into your jam-packed schedule. Appointments start as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 6:30 p.m., and of course, appointments on Saturday.

4

Does your dentist have an internet cafe?

281-206-4482

9

Check your email and surf the net on brand new iMac computers while you enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee.

Does your dentist have digital x-rays? Instant Images the size of a computer monitor. 5 Remember those old x-rays that were 1” x 2“ ? Imagine the difference looking at a clear image 16” x 16” with all the software abilities that go along with computers. We can magnify a suspicious area and basically see inside the tooth. An added benefit for you is 1/10 the radiation needed.

Does your dentist have a movie theater?

10

No Kidding! What could be more fun than waiting in a 10 chair movie theater? If you don’t feel like checking your email at the internet cafe, come into the theater and recline and relax. This is not like the dentist when you were a kid! Coming soon in our new facility.

Members of the Quail Valley Garden Club celebrate the Edible Arbor Trail’s ribbon cutting ceremony along with Council Member Robin Elackatt, bottom row, fourth from the left, and Missouri City Forester Paul Wierzbicki, bottom row, first person on the right.

Community Celebrates Edible Arbor Trail

Methodist Medical Office Building 2

After years of planning and preparation, residents, city officials, staff and tree trail sponsors officially celebrated the grand opening of Missouri City’s first Edible Tree Trail. Visitors to the trail, just west of Murphy Road along Oyster Creek, can sample treats created by Mother Nature. Some of the species include Mexican Persimmon and Plum trees as well as Chinese Jujube trees. “This is a great opportunity for people of Missouri City to walk these trails and pick a piece of fruit along the way,” said Council Member Robin Elackatt. The project is 100-percent funded through donations and other grant money. The trees should mature and bear fruit at different times of the year to help assure there is always something to enjoy. The Edible Arbor Trail is the first of its kind in the region and is managing well despite the drought conditions of the past summer. You can visit the trail along Oyster Creek, just west of Murphy Road at Raoul Wallenberg Lane and see or taste for yourself If you would like to become a sponsor, visit the Forestry section under Parks and Recreation on the city’s website, www. missouricitytx.gov, then click “Current Projects” or call 281-403-8645.

Trees for Tots 2011

Frank Lee, OD Mary Ghoubrial, OD and Uyen Tran, OD

MedCare Milestones hosted its 6th annual Trees for Tots event on Saturday, December 3rd, from 9am – 1pm, at MedCare Pediatric Rehab Center in Stafford. With the generous support of Community Partners’ donations and contributions from sponsors and fundraisers, Medcare Milestones gave away over 200 Christmas trees, ornaments and lights to families of children with special needs. Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents hosted a cocktail hour and reception at The Inn at Dos Brisas, with over 250 guests. During cocktail hour, they enjoyed the wonderful jazz sounds of the Anthony Caceres Band with an unforgettable view on the patio deck with infinity pool and furnished with country chic sofas, wicker coffee tables, and cabanas, all of which overlooked an open country sky line. After cocktail hour, guests moved into a seven thousand square foot white-draped tent with several sparkling chandeliers, which hung inside huge wrought iron bird cages, all accented by cascading magnolia leaf vines. Guests were seated at mirror topped tables and long mahogany tables decorated by thousands of fresh flowers including white and plum colored phalaenopis orchids - absolutely breathe - taking ambience by Scott Kontizer with Darryl & Co and Lisa Tran with Blooming Gallery. This was topped with a perfectly executed menu with the collaboration of Cordua/MJC Catering and the Inn at Dos Brisas. Music and Entertainment was by The Eclipse Band and Orchestra and a sweet ending featured a seven-tiered cake by Susie’s Cake Creation and groom’s cake by Nicki Tribe. Then guests danced the night away to the tunes of the Eclipse Band & Orchestra. Planning and coordination of wedding was by Mai Dang with Honeydew Events. Mrs. Candace and Mr. Brandon Kircher, graduates of TCU and USCAkin, have begun their new journey in life together in Texas after returning from their honeymoon in Paris and Bali.

A New Year, A New Financial You

W

ho doesn’t like a fresh start of a new year? A clean slate and an optimistic outlook make January 1st a magical time. It seems every year we vow to take care of our finances, only to be sidetracked with excuses. And before we know it, the year is ending and we’re making resolutions…again. This year, The Hardee Investment Group wants you to take control of your finances. We’ve listed a few simple, but smart, money moves for finding your financial stability in 2012. First, review the previous year. ‘Tis the season for reflections, so take a look at your 2011 budget. Identify both good and bad money moves you made. Celebrate the good money moves and resolve to take the necessary steps to improve your finances. You’ll only benefit in the future. Second, set one financial goal. Each year we find ourselves saying we’ll contribute more towards our retirement plan, pay off

debt, or save more from each paycheck. If you think about it, those three goals together are daunting and probably leave you with too much month at the end of the money. So choose just one and focus your energy on that one goal this year. Odds are you can accomplish that single goal fairly easily and without much added effort. You’d be amazed at what you can do. Third, make a plan. Written plans are much easier to follow than lists created in your head. A written plan allows you to see your goals. If it helps, write the steps you need to take to reach each one. It might sound silly, but you’ll feel much more accomplished when you can celebrate your “mini-goals.” It’s just one more step closer to the big prize - achieving your financial dreams. Our fourth and final suggestion is to visit with the members of the Hardee Investment Group. We can review your portfolio to maximize you returns, save

for future college tuition and retirement, and assist you with your estate planning. We’d be happy to offer you a second opinion on your portfolio. Our group invites you to visit our website at www.HardeeInvestmentGroup.com to familiarize yourself with our financial family. We’d love to hear from you, our readers! The bottom line is there are many goals out there - finances, health, family, or travel. Without a plan, your goals will only be dreams. This article is provided by H. Pictured are Councilor Dwayne Grigar; RDC Director Allen Scopel; Mayor Pro Tem Tom Suter; Imperial Arts Visual Arts/Education Director Robyn Miller; Imperial Arts Board Member Nancy Olson; Imperial Arts Founder and Executive Director Edward Crowell III; Rosenberg Mayor Vincent M. Morales, Jr.; RDC Chairperson Bill Knesek; Imperial Arts Board Member Ed Crowell, Jr.; and Imperial Arts Marketing Director Erin Newbrand.

In a special public meeting held Thursday, December 1st at Rosenberg City Hall, the Rosenberg Development Corporation (RDC) heard a proposal from Imperial Arts (IA) to make Rosenberg’s historic downtown district a destination for arts and culture. If approved as presented, a partnership between RDC and IA would establish the Rosenberg Arts Center by Spring 2012, a restored historic Cole Theater by Fall 2013, and recognition of the historic downtown district as a sanctioned “Cultural District” by the Texas Commission on the Arts by the end of 2013. The RDC Board expressed enthusiasm and interest in moving forward with this proposal, and directed staff to continue to develop specific details related to a formal partnership with IA. Edward Crowell III, Imperial Arts’ Founder and Executive Director, said, “This is going to be an exciting journey with lofty goals to be accomplished in a short time period. With the support of the RDC and the City of Rosenberg, and with Imperial Arts’ talent and experience, this will become a reality and bring community, commerce and tourism to downtown Rosenberg.” Matt Fielder, Economic Development Director, said, “We’re excited about the opportunity to have continued investment in our historic downtown and to preserve the Cole Theatre as a Rosenberg landmark. This partnership promises to bring new opportunities for cultural arts to our community, as well as be a magnet to draw

people to Rosenberg from other areas. I believe it will be an important boost to the businesses downtown and on Avenue H.” The development plan presented by IA consists of three major phases: First, establishment of the Rosenberg Arts Center in historic downtown, offering a variety of live performances, films, art exhibits, and arts education programming; Second, the re-opening of the historic Cole Theater, restored to its historic art deco-style glory, offering major productions of professional opera, theatre, concerts, films, art exhibits, and community events; and Third, the designation of historic downtown Rosenberg as a “Cultural District” by the Texas Commission on the Arts – with museums, shops, landmarks, the Rosenberg Arts Center, and the restored Cole Theater as important components of community, commerce, and tourism. REJUVENATION & WELLNESS Dr. Shel Wellness and Medical Spa After practicing medicine as an OB/ GYN for over 10 years, I have encountered countless patients suffering from: irritability, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, low energy, low libido, & weight gain. Unfortunately women are accustomed to being on a host of prescription medications to combat their symptoms without getting to the root cause of them. I have been fortunate enough to have my patients embrace an integrative approach to treating the whole person, not just the symptoms, to achieve a healthy balance and a happy life full of vitality. Treating the symptoms related to hormone imbalance is very complex but can be easily treated with the right Physician and the use of Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, or BHRT. BHRT utilizes naturally occurring plant sources that are an exact match to what our bodies naturally produce to correct hormone imbalance & the symptoms associated with it. As symptoms decrease, patients begin

to feel more like themselves again. One of the main complaints I hear from women is regarding their weight. I combine BHRT along with the most advanced medically supervised weight loss programs to effectively achieve their weight loss goals. Weight loss by means of balancing hormones can be a long process so many patients choose to incorporate one of our medically supervised programs such as: hCG and proper meal planning to give themselves a head start journey to achieve their goals. I have witnessed countless patients regain their confidence, happiness and health by simply losing 15 or 20 pounds and restoring a healthy hormone balance. Regardless what symptoms you’re suffering from, there is help in your community at Dr. Shel Wellness and Medical Spa, located at 1437 Highway 6, suite 100, Sugar Land, TX, 77478. Tingling Hands and Burning Feet By: A.Y. Shukla M.D.

Are you one of thousands of Americans who suffer from a disease condition referred to as peripheral neuropathy? Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nerves characterized by tingling or burning sensation, weakness, muscle aches or cramps, difficulties with balance, and at times autonomic nervous system involvement characterized by dizziness, sexual dysfunction, or change of blood pressure especially in upright position. Peripheral neuropathies have generally a gradual onset and slow progression. A typical description of the tingling and numbness is in a “glove and stocking” fashion that is mainly in the lower legs and distal aspects of the upper extremities. Tingling sensation or burning pain are very common symptoms with peripheral neuropathy predominantly due to involvement of the sensory nerves; however, in the advanced cases, motor nerves are also involved where weakness and gait difficulties can also be predominant the clinical presentation. In many cases, a strong family history is noteworthy; however, many other cases may not have any underlying cause contributing to the disease. It is important to have a formal neurological evaluation and a careful search for correctable causes as for example diabetes mellitus, renal failure, disorder of thyroid glands, exposure to drugs and toxins, or heavy metals like arsenic, lead, mercury, or thallium, industrial solvents or pesticides, vitamin deficiencies, or any underlying malignancies or tumors which can also be associated with peripheral neuropathy. Dr. Shukla is board certified in Neurology, Electromyography, Sleep Medicine and Vascular Neurology. If you have met Jeremy Smith, you remember his engaging smile, approachable style, willingness to help and great example of physical fitness. Jeremy, a National Council of Strength and Fitness Certified Personal Trainer since 2005, has been active all his life and coaches others regularly as a Personal Trainer at the Fort Bend Family YMCA in Missouri City. On November 5th, competing for the first time in the Muscle Mania Space City Body Building Show, Novice Division, Jeremy placed 2nd in the Heavy Weight Division. “I wanted to challenge myself to take it to a higher level. This is beyond what a regular exerciser would do, but as I challenged myself, I was able to accomplish something extraordinary,” said Jeremy. Jeremy lost 45 pounds over a dedicated 16-week period and sculpted his body, doing it all naturally without steroids, through an intense seven-day training regimen and very strict diet. To see significant physical improvement, it is generally recommended that one workout five times per week and at least three times per week to maintain fitness. “It takes dedication over a period of time to healthily lose weight and increase muscle,” said Jeremy. “Mix it up with nutrition, weight resistance training and especially aerobic cardio. Avoid junk food. Eat more vegetables and lean meats. Be consistent. Change your lifestyle and you can reach your goals. Just make up your mind to do it.” Take the next step by investing in personal training at the Fort Bend Family YMCA. Jeremy and other great certified personal trainers will help you reach your fitness and nutrition goals. For more information, visit www.ymcahouston.org/fort-bend-family. H

Sugar Land Plastic Surgery It has been estimated that over 90 percent of the visible signs of aging are due to the effects of the sun on your skin. Those undesirable lines, wrinkles, brown spots and texture changes all fall under the definition of photo aging. The good news is that photo aging is both preventable and treatable. As your skin ages and is exposed to UVA and UVB rays, the turnover of skin cells slows significantly, throwing off the balance between the growth of healthy new cells and the sloughing of old, damaged cells. Healthy skin knows how to replace damaged cells and stimulate the growth of new, vibrant skin. All your skin needs is the right kind of treatment to help it remember how. Sugar Land Plastic Surgery Skin & Laser Aesthetics offers a variety of medical skin treatments and laser services to correct signs of aging, reduce sun damage, enhance collagen production, protect skin from free radicals, and restore balance for a healthy complexion. Skin rejuvenation should be considered an ongoing project, a life choice. It is never too late to start. With our help and your commitment, we can improve the health and appearance of your skin. We invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation today! Contact Sugar Land Plastic Surgery, John T. Nguyen, MD, FACS, at 281.980.8000 or visit www.MyBodySurgeon.com. H

In a time when society places a high value on appearance, coloring hair has become a commonplace experience. When getting your hair colored, using healthy products is just as important as choosing a fitting color. Chemicals in most hair dyes sometimes can be damaging and leave your hair malnourished. Strong chemicals mixed with unnatural ingredients sometimes cause your hair to become brittle, greasy, and full of hapless split ends. This is why when choosing a brand of hair dye, it is imperative to choose products composed with natural ingredients such as Aveda. Aveda products come from a long line of all-natural, plantbased ingredients, which are known to be high-quality, ecofriendly, and significantly healthier for your hair. While Aveda products are sold at most high-end salon and retail stores, having a professional stylist color your hair can significantly increase the quality and prevent unnecessary damage from misuse of products. Salon Eben and Day Spa is a family-owned, professional salon that has been using Aveda products for over 22 years. With their experienced staff, relaxing atmosphere, and use of all-natural Aveda products, your hair will be left healthier, happier, and with the least possible adversities from hair coloring. Cashion and Cody Dentistry and Orthodontics New Location Cashion and Cody Dentistry and Orthodontics is moving to a new location! They have finally finished construction of their new premier dental office building at 17003 SW Freeway in Sugar Land, Texas, and will be up and ready for business by the first of the year. Along with the new location comes a new name -- C & C Dental. The husband and wife team decided to simplify and use a shorter, more concise name for their practice. Drs. Cashion and Cody have been serving the Sugar Land community for almost 20 years. “We are very excited about our expanding practice and all the new changes for 2012, especially as it marks the anniversary of two decades in dentistry!” says Dr. Cody. The new building, constructed by HM General Contractors, is located near the corner of Sweetwater and Highway 59, between the Olive Garden and Sugar Land Baptist Church. It’s “Williamsburg” design, by architect Don Purser, boasts a beautiful red brick, curved windows and stone columns. The interior, created by Watson & Gale, consists of warm soft neutrals with Terrazzo tile floors, marble countertops, and alabaster pendant lighting. The office will house state-of-the-art dental equipment with new laser and digital technology as well as feature a new movie room for patients. “We have worked really hard, alongside our contractors, to get this job done,” says Dr. Cashion, “and we are anticipating an amazing result!” For more information please visit www.cashionandcodyonline.com or call 281-206-4482. F

rom director Steven Spielberg comes an emotional epic on a classic scale. It is the story of a miraculous horse in wartime - a stirring journey that explores a bond of friendship, loyalty and courage. Within the tale of a boy and the feisty colt he never stops believing in, there are sweeping battles, desperate escapes and an evocative odyssey through a world at war. But no matter where they go or what they experience both boy and horse keep forging ahead, driven by devotion and the hope of returning home. Adapted from one of the great modern stories of friendship and war, the film is drawn from the novel that sparked a rousing stage hit, garnering five Tony Awards, including Best Play. Now, Spielberg unfolds this heartwarming tale for all ages with a return to the territory where big screen cinema and intimate storytelling meet. The journey begins on the cusp of WWI as an English farming family buys a fiery hunter colt at auction despite not having the funds to pay for him. Named Joey, the horse seems to be nothing but a loss for

struggling Ted and Rosie Narracott (Peter Mullan and Emily Watson), but their son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) is determined to tame and train him, making the most of Joey’s enthralling spirit, speed and affection. The two are inseparable, but when war breaks out, they are pulled apart as Joey is sold from under him and heads to the front as the mount of a dashing British cavalry officer. Thus starts Joey’s labyrinthine trek through joy and sorrow, hardship and wonder, as this simple horse becomes a remarkable hero, touching lives on all sides of the war with his innocence, purity of motive, and unconditional devotion to his human friends. He pulls battlefield ambulances, whisks away German soldiers on the run, fires the imagination of a French girl and hauls colossal cannons up mountains. As the film builds to its powerful climax, and Albert heads into the trenches on his own perilous mission, Joey finds himself ensnared in the haunting No Man’s Land between British and German territory. But even when it seems there can be no return, he sets in motion a momentary chance for peace and holds fast to a dream of reunion and renewal. What Spielberg has on his hands is essentially a Saving Private Ryan set against the backdrop of WWI whose focus

is that of a horse. One of the most magnetic qualities of the film is its emotion. The viewer will experience the full gamut due to everything about the film. The casting, the cinematography, as well as the score, all combine to provide a grandiose film that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The emotion and honesty of the film are just raw throughout. The battle, sequence involving the Argonne is phenomenal both in its presentation and scope. Immediately after the brutality of the battle, your emotions will once again be twisted as two enemies are both drawn to the center of the battlefield because of their love of horses. What happens proves there is hope in the world no matter who you are or where you come from. Don't pass up War Horse as it will definitely be involved in the Oscar race this year. H

Pregnancy Resource Center Celebrates 30 Years of Service and Plans to Expand Hours Pregnancy Resource Center of Fort Bend County (PRC) celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year. We are so honored to have contributed to the community for this many years! It is awesome to think of the lives of the women, men and children that we have served over these years. As the PRC begins the process of converting to a medical facility in 2012, we are planning to expand our hours of service. It is our goal to be available for clients who work or go to school. In doing so, we have a great need for Peer Counselor volunteers. Recent class graduate, Lynn Hill states, “So much of the training covers things that I would never have known. Birth is truly a miracle and going through the training made the counseling so much easier, it was so worth it!” The training for this volunteer opportunity is a seven class series beginning on Thursday, February 2nd. The six classes run all month, every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm (excluding Valentine’s Day). The 7th and final class is on Saturday, February 25th from 9:00 to 3:00 pm. Private Schools & After School Activities The Adventure Begins at International Preparatory School Parents have several choices when it comes to the education of their children. Those that visit the International Preparatory School are looking for something very specific. They are searching for a fresh philosophy and a renewed energy in teaching. Smaller class sizes rank as the number one concern. Why? Because this provides individual attention for students that require more support in some areas while addressing the needs of the gifted child. This all translates into a school where both the teachers and administration set common expectations in an open, interactive, understanding and energizing manner. Parents want a safe environment that maintains a high standard of discipline and respect, one that fosters a strong sense of community through school wide activities for all ages. Emphasis on well rounded education makes participation in extracurricular activities such as mu-

sic and art, an integral part of the everyday curriculum. Studies demonstrate that healthy competition, be it through math or chess clubs, lead to a higher motivation in learning. Going to school should be an adventure. That adventure begins at age 4 at the International Preparatory School with a creative learning environment which continues through Elementary and Middle School. The curriculum aspires balanced academics while developing a strong social, physical, and moral aptitude. The International Preparatory School is the choice many parents are making for their children. An environment that fosters the gifted and accelerated student as well as the under confident. If you have great expectations for your child, come by and experience the vibrant atmosphere at the International Preparatory School for yourself. Please call 281-208-1403. H

High Quality Preschool Experiences Lead to Future Success in School and Life Look for a program that balances academics with social-emotional development According to the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, high quality early childhood education is directly related to long-term success in life: “The quality and stability of a child’s human relationships in the early years lay the foundation for a wide range of later developmental outcomes that really matter – self-confidence and sound mental health, motivation to learn, achievement in school and later in life.” Preschool education will not only shape a child’s success in elementary school, but will also affect success later in life. Parents naturally look for success markers like reading and math proficiency; however, they also want their children to be happy, confident and independent. When choosing a preschool program, look for a balance between a rich academic curriculum, child-initiated play, teacher instruction and focus on social-emotional development. Primrose Schools, a family of 230 accredited, private preschools, represents the “gold standard” for this approach. Primrose School of First Colony offers the Balanced Learning® Curriculum, which blends academics, play and character development. “Preschool education is so much more than just learning numbers and letters. It is also the foundation for a child’s future in life,” said Mrs. Papadopulos, owner of the Primrose School of First Colony. “Character development – understanding concepts like friendship, generosity, and honesty – is the heart of our culture at Primrose.” Primrose believes that with the right foundation anything is possible for your child. To learn more about the benefits of enrolling your child at the Primrose School of First Colony, visit www.primrosefirstcolony.com or call 281.565.2707. H

Private Schools & After School Activities How’s Your Child’s School Year So Far? The co-founders of a world-renowned teacher training company, ATiseminars. org, created the Turning Point Academy, a grades 6-12 private school that truly prepares its students for success in college…and in life! “As parents, we could not find the type of school we wished for our daughter,” was a sentiment we commonly heard.

We have trained over 50,000 teachers annually for over 20 years, and with that knowledge, we decided to blend the best educational models into a learning experience that benefits today’s middle and high school students. Along with the pleasure of learning in a luxurious home setting with spectacular views, the Turning Point Academy proudly uses the new Col-

lege Prep curriculum. Our curriculum is the “best of the best” and is recognized by the College Board. Both student and parents are personally involved in mapping out detailed plans for high school completion as well as college enrollment. We assist each student with the college application, enrollment and scholarship process. Grades 6-12 students are taught to take ownership of their learning by mastering goal-setting and weekly planning—habits necessary for college and future employment! You won’t find shortcuts on our tests like matching, true-false or multiple choice. Our students truly master each subject before moving on. Can you imagine a school without the drama in the hallways? Without negative peer pressure? Without homework? Visit our website to view our Channel 2 News interview at www.theturningpointacademy.org. Bill Austin Sells Gymnastics Center

Bill Austin recently sold his gymnastic center to Robert Gifford, a longtime Sugar Land resident. Gifford has operated several successful karate schools in Fort Bend County for the past 30 years, and his students have received both state and national awards in martial arts competition. His organization has also donated over $175,000 to charitable foundations. Sugar Land Gymnastics, Karate and Dance (SLG) is the new name for the gymnastics center, which is located at 16215 Lexington Blvd. across from the First Colony Mall. The facility

has been totally remodeled and is now a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility boasting new floors, two dance rooms, new gym equipment and a comfortable lounge. Gifford said, “Our focus will be on kids and producing Olympic caliber athletes. Our staff has the credentials and experience to get it done. We have been extremely surprised by the response we have gotten thus far. We have only been open a few months, and our spots are already filling up.” SLG has also expanded their recreational gymnastics, tumbling and

dance programs and added karate classes and Zumba dancing. Birthday parties are huge at SLG so if you are interested, you may have to book your party weeks in advance. There is an indoor rock wall, zip-line, giant bouncy house slide and much more. Next year, SLG will add cheerleading and will truly become a ‘One Stop Shop’ for kids. We live in a globally competitive environment that will continue to demand new solutions for greater challenges using advanced technology. Science and engineering have contributed significantly to the high standard of living we currently enjoy, but the US graduates fewer professionals into these fields than 30 years ago. Students must be fully prepared with toplevel skills in creativity, innovation, analysis, development, delivery and management in the science and technology fields to maintain the competitive leadership of the community and nation. Is your child ready to meet this challenge? Techno Chaos was established in Sugar Land to drive higher achievement and to increase the number of students pursing further education for science, engineering and technical professions. The goal at Techno Chaos is to make serious learning fun by reawakening the natural drive for learning and creativity. Techno Chao provides a wide range of programs from classes, camps, open play, league play, competitions, robot rumbles, night outs, merit badge workshops to teacher programs. Robotics education is featured throughout Techno Chaos programs, along with other effective methods. Play and competition are used to drive faster learning and improvement, and students are encouraged to learn from successes and failures to improve their projects and solutions. Techno Chaos offers a wide and growing curriculum in robotics education, which is primarily delivered through after-school programs and camps to enable access to students from any education setting. M edical F ocus Sugar Land Orthodontist Dr. Dennis Halford Among First in the Area to Offer New iTero Scanner to Invisalign® Patients Advanced Digital Imaging Cuts Impression Time in Half, Eliminating Discomfort of Traditional Impressions and Ensuring Accurate Results Dr. Dennis Halford is among the first in Sugar Land to offer Invisalign® patients an advanced new digital imaging option for impressions: the iTero Scanner. The less invasive imaging technology developed by Align Technology Corporation uses visible light to capture images and does not emit radioactive waves. It is changing the orthodontic experience for patients and improving overall results. Training on the new scanners begins late November and scheduled for patient use the first week of December. “The iTero Scanner not only eliminates the most unpleasant part of the process for Invisalign patients, which previously involved large, uncomforta-

ble trays and a mouth full of liquid plaster, but it also captures contours with superior accuracy resulting in a more accurate fit,” said Halford of Halford Orthodontics. “In half the time it takes traditional impressions, the iTero Scanner captures our patient’s impression digitally and immediately emits it on our in-office computer display. We then create a 3-dimensional landscape of their entire oral cavity and are able to view it together,” added Halford. While Halford indicated that the new digital scanning technology is currently only available for Invisalign patients and diagnostic study models, it is the Invisalign impression process which

has traditionally taken the longest - and sometimes required patients to return for more impressions resulting in delays. The iTero Scanner dramatically reduces time to treatment, as the digital map of each patient’s mouth is sent electronically to Align Technologies for a rapid and more precise custom creation of aligners. A long time Sugar Land resident and mentor to junior high and high school students, Dr. Halford provides patients with the latest in orthodontic care in a warm and family-friendly environment. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists and a founding member of the American Association of Functional Orthodontists. Dr. Halford is also a certified “Elite” orthodontist for Invisalign and is a certified provider for Damon and Insignia by Ormco. To learn more about Dr. Halford and the latest in digital impression technology, visit www.halfordorthodontics.com or call (281) 980-8351 to schedule a consultation. H

High School HOT SHOT

Addison Marshall: Showing Cancer Who is Boss

ddison Marshall is a senior at Foster High School in LCISD. His typical day includes running before school, going to school, lifting weights, completing homework, studying and heading to bed around 10:30. However, this teen lives anything but a typical life. Addison was diagnosed with Leukemia during the spring of his freshman year of high school. During spring football practice of his freshman year, Addison was having intense pain in his side. When he went to the doctor, he found out that he had cracked his ribs, but he couldn’t figure out what caused the cracked bones. After a few more tests, the doctors were able to conclude that Addison’s spleen had filled up with cancerous cells and burst, thereby cracking his ribs. Addison was officially diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Upon receiving his diagnosis, Addison’s life quickly changed, and he immediately began treatment to fight his cancer. Unlike a normal teenager, his second home became M.D. Anderson instead of his best friend’s house, and he now walked the halls of the hospital instead of the crowded high school hallways. After successful chemotherapy treatments, Addison went on “maintenance.” However, three months into “maintenance,” Addison relapsed in April of his sophomore year. The cancer was now in his spine and brain. Addison knew that this meant more treatment, but he also knew what this meant for the upcoming football season. Addison loves playing football. He began playing football at the age of six and dreamed of playing high school football. His wish came true freshman year, but was quickly taken away when he was diagnosed that same year. Ad-

n o s i d d A dison was still a member of the team and watched from the sidelines, but he was unable to actually play. After his first round with the disease, Addison was excited to play for his junior year until his relapse when the leukemia entered his spine and brain. However, Addison was bound and determined to play his senior year; he wasn’t going to let the cancer hold him back from doing what he loved. Finally, during the last half of the last game of the season, Addison had the chance to play with his teammates, and they won! Addison never let the cancer dictate his life and tried to be a normal teenager through his adult-sized struggles. “Live as normal as possible,” said Addison. “That is the secret to crushing cancer.” Even though Addison missed over 60 days of school per year for his treatment, he will graduate on time and in the top 10% of his class. Addison is an intelligent and athletic young man, but he is also dedicated to helping others. He is a member of NHS, PALS and a mentor to young children who are also fighting cancer. The young children look up to Addison as a role model

and a fun person to “horse” around with at the hospital. As a cancer survivor with an incredible amount of determination and perseverance, two prestigious football awards have chosen to recognize Addison. At the beginning of December, Addison learned that he had been chosen as a Top 12 Finalist for the High School Football Rudy Awards. This award is given annually to a football player who embodies the values of character, courage, contribution and commitment. As a well-deserved nominee, Addison’s football coaches and friends made a short video that details Addison’s battle with cancer and his positive outlook through it all. Also, Addison was chosen as the Front Line Kids Representative for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Awards. He gave an amazing speech and announced the winner of the award. For his speech at the Lombardi Awards, Addison eloquently summed up his battle with cancer in a few sentences. “Life doesn’t always go the way you plan it, but it is still good; it teaches you to be grateful and have faith that there is a plan that maybe we can’t necessarily understand right now,” said Addison. “That’s why you should always play until the whistle blows.” For Addison, his fight with cancer has given him a new perspective on what is important in life. In the fall, he will attend Texas A&M University to become a physical therapist. Currently, Addison is continuing chemotherapy and is scheduled to complete it in June. We wish Addison the best of luck in the future and hope that he never hears a whistle blow. H

CHURRASCOS: Third Location is More Than a Charm

MICHAEL CORDUA

y taking ingredients we know exist but have never had prepared in such a way, the newest member of the Cordua family restaurants, Churrascos in Sugar Land, opened with plenty of fanfare on December 1 in Sugar Land. And, we are so lucky they did. I have to admit, I was somewhat taken aback at the exquisite signature Churrasco steak. With the chimichurri sauce and grilling technique, the result is excellent. I may never look at another steak the same way again. If you are not familiar with chimichurri sauce, take note: the flavor of the meat shines through and is enhanced but not overpowered by the perfectly balanced flavors. Did you know that it was voted one of Esquire Magazine’s Top 20 Steaks in America? My next observation during my visit was that everything on the menu is a well-honed combination of Latin American ingredients prepared with due respect to classical European cooking methods – a match made in heaven. Knowing the Cordua name, as we do in Houston, Michael Cordua has made great food, with the hospitality to match his trademark. Americas, Artista, The Amazon Grill and the Churracscos locations in River Oaks and Westchase have achieved a reputation for only the highest caliber dining experience. I also sampled the Pargo de Lujo, which is a pan roasted Gulf Coast red snapper with jumbo lump crab, shrimp, peeled grape tomatoes, basil and habanero citrus beurre blanc with mascarpone mashed potatoes. The snapper melts in your mouth and is heaped with a generous amount of lump crab, but those peeled grape tomatoes and mascarpone mashed potatoes are really such a lovely surprise with an entrée that has everything going for it.

Considered a pioneer in advancing Latin American cuisine, awardwinning chef and restaurateur Michael Cordua is the only Texas chef to be inducted into the Food and Wine Hall of Fame and was also voted one of America’s Top Ten Chefs. He is the recipient of the Robert Mondavi award for culinary excellence and is currently a semifinalist for the 2011 James Beard Foundation Restaurateur Award.

DAVID CORDUA With a Grand Diplome in Pastry and Cuisine from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, David Cordua has carved out his own path in the culinary world, working for some of the finest restaurants in France and specializing in wines and front-of-the-house training as well.

Fried plantains are served with chimichurri sauce for dipping.

The Ceviche Copacabana is a Peruvian-style ceviche of fresh market catch, Gulf shrimp, avocado, red onion, jalapeno, and cilantro served in a carved pineapple.

A tres leche cake soaked in sweet vanilla laced cream and then topped with a decadent meringue Italiano. The famous Churrasco steak is flavored with chimichurri sauce before it is grilled to perfection.

“The presentation is impressive and the flavors make it a joy to devour - almost as much as the two desserts I also included in my meal.”

CHIMICHURRI SAUCE FROM CHURRASCOS Ingredients

Before you even consider an entrée, I would suggest an assortment of appetizers to share with the table. I had the Angel Wings, Corn Smoked Crab Fingers and the Ceviche Copacabana because they came highly recommended. The Angel Wings are a light chicken wing with brown butter, habanero papaya sauce and a classic blue cheese dressing. You have to try them! The Corn Smoked Crab Fingers are delivered with a lovely and ample serving of sweet crab with red pepper, jalapenos, scallions, lemon butter and crispy yucca cake. They are out-of-thisworld, lick-your-plate-clean good! The Ceviche Copacabana is a Peruvian-style ceviche of fresh market catch and gulf shrimp, avocado, red onion, jalapeno and cilantro served in a carved pineapple. The presentation is impressive and the flavors make it a joy to devour – almost as much as the two desserts I also included in my meal. The original Tres Leches is billed as a holiday tradition in Houston, and I now understand why. I would even give up chocolate for it, and I realize that’s a pretty bold statement. The cake is soaked with sweet vanilla-laced cream and then, topped with a decadent Meringue

Italiano. I think every special occasion should include it! I also tried the homemade Triple Cream Coconut Ice Cream, which is served in a caramel tuile basket and fresh berries—sublime! If you do prefer chocolate, don’t worry, I saw a Chocolate Truffle Cake with chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache on the long list of desserts as well. With respect to the rest of the menu, I couldn’t get to it all. I will tell you that it lacks nothing. You can find soups and salads, side dishes and accompaniments to suit a wide variety of tastes. The lunch menu includes The Churrasco signature steak, Amazon Burger, Torta de Pollo (grilled chicken sandwich), salads and many other selections along with a Churrasco Lunch Trio served Monday thru Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm. There is also a Sunday Brunch. If you have not been to Churrascos and experienced first-hand, the expertly developed dishes from the ingredients of the Americas, you are doing yourself quite a disservice.

Method In a food processor, pulse garlic finely. Chop the parsley by hand. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Store in an airtight container. Best if used the following day. Baste on your favorite protein before grilling. Chimichurri sauce should not be used in a sauté pan since the parsley can turn bitter when fried.

Living the Sweet Life:

Finding Treasures in Unexpected Ways!

A

bout six months ago, one of my clients stepped out of her car for a shoot, and I heard a familiar jingle. At first, I could not place the sound, but after just a second, I realized that it was coming from her shoes. Once I glanced down, I saw her wearing a shoe that almost made me cry. They were a sandal with tiny little glass leaves and grapes that jingled when she walked, and all of these memories of my mother came flooding back to me. Mother had been a shoe person if ever there was one, and she had a pair of white sandals with red and purple grapes that surely had been made by the same designer nearly 35 years prior! My client asked me to tell her the story as I stood there and kept saying “Oh my, oh my!” I explained to her that after mother had been killed, my father gave many of her

clothes and shoes away. He was like most men not thinking about a day in the future when I would want to wear these things or might enjoy just having them. In his haste to try to painfully move on, it was understandable that he gift to her closest friends who were the same size all of these “things.” Years later, I recall, perhaps in high school specifically asking him for those white sandals. I remembered them from when I was a little girl and wanted very much to have them. I was crushed to find that they had been given away. There’s a lot about losing a mother at an early age that is difficult to describe or for others to understand, but in a nutshell, it’s always the small things you remember. It might be a sound or a smell. For me, it was the clicking of those shoes, and I felt like I had found something of mother that had been lost to me. fort bend

My client immediately pulled her foot out of the shoe, and asked me to try it on, and it fit as we are the same size. I told her that I could not take them but asked her for the manufacturer, and said if she ever found anything similar to please buy a pair for me. Two months later, she texted me that she had returned to Switzerland and had been searching for the shoes for me only to discover they were nowhere to be found! I could hardly believe that she would have gone to so much trouble! She said at the next shoot she was bringing hers to me, and I told her absolutely not. I did not intend to have her give up her gloriously fab shoes for me! She wasn’t listening to any of it. When she brought me the baby for the next visit, she brought me those shoes. I told her how much she means to me and that thanking her would never quite be enough. It was a selfless gesture on her part marking her and my friendship forever. She simply stated that for her it was a “no brainer – those shoes had been mine all along – she had just been the one to find and get them!” Happy New Year, too by the way. This year, I am asking everyone to look around them and see if they have something ever so small that might be just the perfect gift to a stranger or to a loved one. I never thought I would ever see those shoes again, and now, I have found the most perfect treasure in the most unexpected of ways! Take Care of You!
