Ask These 10 Questions To Make Sure Your Dentist Stacks Up 1

Does your dentist still use a drill?

Laser technology allows us to offer pain free, no shot fillings. Why do it the old fashioned way? No high pitched whine or vibration from the grinding of the drill. Kids never become afraid of the dentist.

Does your dentist have an intra-oral camera

6 that not only takes a picture of your tooth but also lights up decay?

You read that correctly! An intra-oral camera so small it fits inside your mouth and not only takes a picture of your tooth, but also lights up decay in RED. Now we can show you your tooth on a 20” TV, magnified 50 times, and shine a specialized light to find decay on the biting surfaces and in between 2 teeth. Truly Amazing!

Does your dentist check for

2 cavities with a precise laser?

With a painless laser, we can detect cavities earlier than the eye can see them. The laser scanner can detect new cavities years before any other means of cavity detection.

Does your dentist have massage chairs

7 and satellite TV?

Your comfort is our #1 goal. Relaxing in a warm massage chair while watching a movie or your choice of 119 channels, is the best way we can think of for our patients to enjoy themselves while we do all the work!

Does your dentist recommend

3 extractions for crowded teeth? Give your child a full smile for life. No Extractions-Orthodontics with convenient, no hassle after school appointments as late as 6:30 p.m.

Does your dentist offer 12 months

8 no interest?

We work with our patients to provide easy payment options with no interest. This frees you from using those high interest credit cards.

Does your dentist offer before

4 & after work appointments?

Before & After work appointments that fit into your jam-packed schedule. Appointments start as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 6:30 p.m., and of course, appointments on Saturday.

5

Does your dentist have an internet cafe?

Check your email and surf the net on brand new iMac computers while you enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee.

Does your dentist have digital x-rays? Instant images the size of a computer monitor. Remember those old x-rays that were 1” x 2“ ? Imagine the difference looking at a clear image 16” x 16” with all the software abilities that go along with computers. We can magnify a suspicious area and basically see inside the tooth. An added benefit for you is 1/10 the radiation needed.

Tim Cashion, DDS

Teresa Cody, DDS

Does your dentist have a movie theater?

10 No Kidding!

What could be more fun than waiting in a comfy armchair watching movies? If you don’t feel like checking your email at the internet cafe, come into the theater and recline and relax. This is not like the dentist when you were a kid!

Mamie George Community Center

Provides Myriad of Services

COVER STORY By Linda K. Eaves Photos by Nesossi Studios

C

atholic Charities’ Mamie George Community Center addresses many of the community’s needs with an emphasis on low-income residents and seniors. Now the community has a local access point to Catholic Charities services in Fort Bend County. Before opening in 2011, individuals had to travel to Houston to access services. The Mamie George Community Center and Rio Bend Foster Care Community are part of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. “We’re here to respond to the emerging needs of the community,” said Ernest Lewis, center director. “We have provided the Mobile Clinic Unit for Seniors through a partnership with CHRISTUS Community Health Ministries. We conduct surveys to see how well we’re doing. Our seniors have requested more recreational activities and ESL (English as a second language) classes. Our goal is to grow partnerships, increase programs, promote individual volunteering, forge community partnerships, and increase transportation. “We have a partnership with Fort Bend County to help with transportation and would like to increase transportation options to the center,” said Terri Stuart, development director. Operating with 12 full-time staff members and four employees who share their time between the Houston and Fort Bend locations, the center saves money with staff comprised of 90% volunteers through the Experience Work partnership and community volunteers both retirees and youth. The brightly decorated building is divided into two sections – Basic Needs and Wellness Center. It features a recessed aquarium in its main hallway and child activity centers in several areas. fort bend

Basic Needs Services The center assists with the educational needs of children from the St. Jerome’s Unaccompanied Refugee Minor’s Program (URM) and Rio Bend Foster Care Community. The children from this program are refugees from Haiti, Iraq, and Burma, where they have been separated from their families due to war, drought, famine, flood or other disasters. magazine • July 2012

Education specialist Nicole FranklinJones works with the schools and foster parents to place the youth in the appropriate classes and to get needed services such as assessments, modified testing, ESL classes and tutoring. When a refugee minor comes into the country, a team of social workers meets with the family at the airport. The youth may be placed either in a community home or at Rio Bend in private foster homes. They are tested for TB and examined by a doctor, and if healthy, go to school three days later. Before these kids come here, education is secondary to them. “Here it’s a priority. We want to make sure they understand,” said Franklin-Jones. One success story is Daro from South Sudan who graduated from high school and received a $5,000 scholarship to attend Houston Community College. He wants to become a social worker. FranklinJones arranged to have him take summer classes to build his writing and reading skills and procured an instructor to show him how to use the college library system. “We’re like their parents. When they transition out of our program, we want them to have life skills to succeed.” “We’re slowly integrating and rolling out more programs as we build capacity and infrastructure and as we raise the dollars for them,” said Lewis. “We’re working with Immigrant Legal Assistance with our St. Francis Cabrini Center as well as Know Your Rights for victims of human trafficking, domestic abuse and those working to acquire citizenship. We have charla – conversation – on a regular basis so these people can learn how to maneu-

Proof of residence, proof of income, household composition; verifying the need is required. The average duration of care is six months. A membership card is issued for “shopping” at Trini’s Corner Market where a “cap” is used instead of money. Clients can “shop” for fresh produce, meat, and canned goods. “We try to use real prices so they can learn about budgeting. We receive food and other in-kind support from the Houston Food Bank and Fiesta Mart.” Nutrition education and financial literacy are emphasized. Grocery items are grouped according to the major food groups; the cap allows for recommend servings. Clients “check out” with their membership card and are allowed to “shop” twice a month. helps stock the store said, “The people are friendly, and I like helping out.” Daughter Nicki who has Down’s syndrome also volunteers in Patti’s Café through the ARC facilitated on-thejob training program. “The people are sweet to her and mentor her.” Basic Needs manager Tiffany Wyatt said, “We serve a combination of low-income seniors and families that qualify for services based on federal poverty guidelines. Many are underemployed or unemployed. Seniors are usually on a fixed income or on disability. We go through a lengthy process to determine if they’re eligible for the program.” Nutrition First is a program where a dietician provides interactive education for parents, grandparents and children. They sample foods, make simples recipes and healthy snacks. “Our overall goal is to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables. We like to give away products to encourage good nutrition – vegetable steamers, apple corers and gift cards.” About 60% of clients have hypertension or diabetes. “Our Nutrition First program is a pilot program that we are currently receiving support from Gulf Coast Medical Foundation and Fort Bend Cares,” Lewis said.

Wellness Center The Wellness Center provides seniors, individuals, and families with a wide range of activities designed to enhance health and fitness. It also provides pregnancy services, support for frail seniors, job training, and financial planning. An exam room is available to check client’s blood pressure, glucose levels and make brown bag assessments (many seniors carry their medicine in a brown pa-

Mamie George Community Center Volunteer Opportunities There are many opportunities to serve at the Mamie George Community Center. While the majority of the volunteers are senior citizens and youth, all residents are invited and encouraged to donate their time and talents to the center. Some of the many volunteer opportunities include: Greeters: Friendly greeting of clients and visitors to provide assistance as needed to direct them to their desired service area. Patty’s Café: Cashiers, dishwashers, cleaning crew or order assistants are needed along with volunteers to assist clients with carrying trays to their table. Gracious Gifts: Serve clients with purchases, check out and gift wrapping, as well as stock shelves and decorate. Assistants: Volunteers are needed in various areas to answer phones, schedule services and appointments, work to monitor activities (such as recreational or in the library), and assist with clerical filing and organizing. Trini’s Corner Market: Load and unload food in the warehouse, stock products in the market, assist clients with shopping and check-out, and serve as cashier or clerk to sack groceries. Other volunteer opportunities include serving as an ambassador, donating professional services, assisting as a photographer, historian, or decorator and much more. per bag.) Clients requiring more care are referred to clinics. “We have a contract with Fort Bend Health Center for those without insurance.” said Mercy Omoregie. The Wellness Center boasts a Meditation Room for meetings, client-led Bible Study, and staff Bible Study. A recreation area has adjoining rooms with tables – a group regularly enjoys putting together jigsaw puzzles. “I enjoy coming here every day,” said 74 year-old Ramona Rosales. “Before I was sitting at home and depressed. I have a lot of friends here. They call me the princess of the puzzles,” she laughed. Marco Calix, 84, a former mechanic, agrees. Volunteer Committee member Magdalene Rodriguez loves the people and all agree this is their second home. “We try to increase social functioning and social inclusion,” said Lewis. “Many seniors are looking to build a sense of community, connect with more friends and keep active.” A computer lab is available for weekly classes taught by a volunteer. Seniors can participate in zumba, line dancing, watch movies or cooking shows. The senior art program is provided in partnership with ARTreach, a non-profit arts organization. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts. The ARTreach Program provides art education such as a six-week ceramic painted tile class. “We also have music. It’s very good for people who have Alzheimer’s,” said client Lourdes Garcia. “We crochet, knit and play dominoes.” A colorful quilt created for a fundraiser hangs on the wall. Most of the artwork is sold in the center’s gift shop – Gracious Gifts – some is used for bingo prizes, special guests, and donor recognition. Proceeds go to operations and programming. Trini’s Market and fitness center said, “I’ve lost 15 pounds since February after using the equipment. I eat a lot of fish, chicken and vegetables now. I love this place.” Patty’s Café offers complimentary nutritious meals to Fort Bend seniors 60 years or older from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. The meals provided to seniors are supported by the Houston Galveston Area Council – Area Agency on Aging. The general public is also welcome to visit the café, and proceeds go to operations. A special of the day is offered along with salads, fruit and items like hamburgers. Clients use their membership cards to dine in the café. Plates of Plenty is a campaign to help support operations. Storm Flags Flying

H

ere on the Gulf Coast we prepare for hurricane season every May. It is not something we look forward to. We would rather be planning our summer vacation to the beach or a Caribbean island. But it is what you do to prepare. Investing is much of the same. An old adage on Wall Street is Sell in May and Go Away. This saying came about decades ago as traders in New York City would sell their positions in anticipation of spending the summer in the cooler environs of the Hamptons. This was well before electronic trading and cell phones. However, there is a great deal of truth that still guides human nature today. There are documented seasonal tendencies such as the best six months and the worst six months of the year. According to the Stock Trader’s Almanac, May through October has historically been the worst six month period of each year. If you had invested

$10,000 in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on May 1st and sold October 31st of every year since 1950, you would have lost $300 total over the past 61 years. The above example is not an investment recommendation. However, a wise investor, just like a wise vacationer, plans for a hurricane this time of year, even as they go about their everyday business. The most recent good period, December 2011 through April 2012, produced a very nice gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average of over 10%. May, on the other hand, has not been very kind to investors so far, giving up almost all the gains made. With the specter of potential European debt defaults and heated political rhetoric in the U.S., it promises to be a very hot summer indeed. Don’t despair; just prepare. The average American cannot afford to retire on just their savings. They must invest to accumulate wealth. Our goal is to help you prepare for

your future even as the “storm flags are flying”. If you would like to learn more about the “good” period of investing, how we help manage “hurricane season” or strategies designed to accumulate and maintain wealth, contact us at www.hardeeinvestmentgroup.com.

The 2012 Fort Bend Corporate Challenge bowling tournament was an incredible success thanks to the generosity of wonderful sponsors and participants. On May 19th, teams from around the Greater Houston area gathered to take part in what for many, has become an annual tradition. Union Pacific Railroad Company was the perennial title sponsor. Their contribution benefitted FBRC’s programs that keep communities safe and drug free. This year’s theme was the Kentucky Derby. Trumpeter Paul Torrisi played the National Anthem and the Call to the Post. Rosenberg Mayor Vincent Morales rolled the Ceremonial First Bowl. The Swinging Door filled everyone’s plate with barbeque. The bowling tournament became quite a heated affair as David Young with the Union Pacific Railroad Company issued a challenge between Fulbright & Jaworski and Connelly Baker Wotring LLP. For a second year in a row, Classic Chevrolet of Sugar Land hoisted the Crystal Cup and was crowned the 2012 Fort Bend Corporate Challenge Champions. Headliners continued on page 40

Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) makes a historic speech.

Behindwiththethe Scenes Creators of By Nick Nicholson

A

braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter explores the secret life of our 16th president, and the untold story that shaped our nation. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov bring a fresh voice to the bloodthirsty lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history’s greatest hunter of the undead. The very words of the title evoke a juxtaposition that is unexpected, if not downright bizarre. Yet it’s an idea to which the filmmakers have fully committed. Their work is a portrait of the man and leader we’ve all studied and the seminal events that defined him and our nation – interwoven with the immersive, visceral action of a vampire story.

At the same time, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter presents the Great Emancipator as the country’s first superhero. Notes producer Tim Burton: “Lincoln’s entire life mirrors the classic comic book superhero mythology. It’s a duality: during the day he’s the president of the United States; at night, a vampire hunter.” That dichotomy is at the core of the Lincoln we meet in the film. “He was ordinary and extraordinary at the same time,” says director Timur Bekmambetov. Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, who adapted his best-selling novel of the same name, adds, “Lincoln’s life story is an archetypal superhero origin story. He’s as close to an actual superhero as this country’s ever seen. Forget about vampires. fort bend

Lincoln had neither family name nor money. His mother died when he was a youngster. In fact, everybody he loved had died. With no education, and armed with just his mind, he became president and saved the nation.” These themes grabbed the attention of Burton, his fellow producer Jim Lemley, and Timur Bekmambetov. Even before Grahame-Smith had completed the novel, Burton heard the title, and his mind kicked into gear. “It sounded like the kind of movie I wanted to see,” Burton claims. “It felt like it could have the crazy energy of the films of my youth, which had a lot of weird mash-ups of horror movies.” Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter also fits squarely within Bekmambetov’s

creative and aesthetic wheelhouse. The Russian filmmaker had previously helmed the box-office smash Wanted and before that, Night Watch and Day Watch, both offering compelling portraits of vampires in a world both familiar and fantastic. Like Burton, Bekmambetov paints on a huge canvas, presenting visually stunning imagery. It was the project’s central idea and cleverness that attracted the Russian filmmaker, claiming, “I immediately reacted to the story because it was so clean, simple and powerful.” Initially, Bekmambetov was to serve as a producer until Burton convinced him to take the reins as the director of the film. “I wanted to see Timur’s version of this story! Everything had to be presented in a very straightforward way,” says Grahame-Smith. “We never wink at the audience – not even once. Tim Burton really supported us and protected that vision.” Grahame-Smith notes that his idea for his book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter came from an observation he made during a 2009 tour to promote his previous tome, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, another unexpected connection between disparate cultural entities. The author/screenwriter recalls, “That year marked the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, and many of the bookstores on my promotional tour had two displays: one featured books about Lincoln’s life; the other was a vampire-themed display, including the Twilight and Sookie Stackhouse books. It led me to think about combining the two subjects.” Grahame-Smith’s vampires were polar opposites to the romantic figures captured in the pages of the books he saw on display. His creatures of the undead pay proper reverence to the classic tradition of vampires in the movies. “The vampires in our movie aren’t romantic or funny, and they certainly don’t sparkle,” he notes. “Our vampires are bloodthirsty and cunning – and most frightening of all, they’ve become a part of the fabric of everyday life, working as blacksmiths, pharmacists, and bankers.” The vampires’ principal foe is one of history’s most beloved figures, whom many consider our greatest president. This story covers 45 years in Abraham Lincoln’s life, from 1820 to 1865, and is set in Kentucky, Illinois, and Louisiana and, of course, the nation’s capital. So, who would follow in the footsteps of some of our most accomplished actors, and play the iconic leader and fearless vampire slayer? The nod went to stage actor Benjamin Walker. “Ben brings humanity and a mischievous quality, which felt very real, to the role,” says Tim Burton. Jim Lemley adds, “Ben captures Lincoln’s honesty, integrity, courage and sense of purpose.” Most important to Walker was the opportunity to portray not only what made Lincoln a giant, but also a relatable human being. “What’s dangerous about playing an icon is not allowing the character to be human,” says the actor. “You must allow the character to be vulnerable or even silly. Luckily, Tim and Timur were open to making Abraham a flawed, funny and conflicted man.” “The human side is always the most important thing,” Burton concurs. “And, the character has to have a sense of humor because no one could survive as a vampire hunter without it.” Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer Starring: Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper and Mary Elizabeth Winstead Director: Timur Bekmambetov Company: 20th Century Fox Now Showing: In Local Area Theatres MPAA Rating: R Grade: A+

Joe Rippey from The Vine Wine Room and Two Saints Restaurant suggests you start with a beautiful Rosé from southern France. Perhaps the 2009 Brotte Tavel Les Elantiers, a clean, bright and dry wine. Mostly Grenache blended with a little Syrah and Carignan, with a soft floral fruit and mouth watering acidity. Tavel is the only appellation in the world that produces only Rose’. Serve chilled and pair with a semi-hard cheese such as Paragon. The local Houston Dairymaids brings us Paragon from Dripping Springs, Texas. It is a blend of parmesan and cheddar, creamy and flaky, and is perfect with olives and a crusty baguette. Bon Appetite!

At a recent grant reception, Fort Bend Cares gave out $175,000 to 26 different non-profit organizations. The Texana Children’s Center for Autism was honored to be one of those recipients. Autism is a spectrum disorder and is one of the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S. with 1 in 88 children being diagnosed with the disorder. Children with autism tend to exhibit poor imitation skills, deficiencies in verbal and nonverbal communication, unusual responses to people, and inappropriate behavior, such as hand flapping and body rocking. Their difficulties with communication skills can impede their social interactions with both peers and adults. The goal at the Texana Children’s Center for Autism is to unlock the potential in each child in the program helping them to learn and ultimately preparing each child for mainstream school. To achieve that goal, the Children’s Center for Autism must strive to create a learning environment that it is as close as possible to what the child will find in our public schools.

The Designer’s Niche Residential & Commercial Design Studio

Most school classrooms in the area are already equipped with the latest SMARTBoard technology and are used on a daily basis to teach. The SMARTBoard is a presentation device that interfaces with a computer. The computer images are displayed on the board by a digital projector, where they can be seen and manipulated. The use of a SMARTBoard in teaching children with autism is that they are very useful in helping to gain their focus, have them working in groups and allow them to get up and move to the board or table rather than sit at a desk. Children with autism often have limited motor skills, but they can also enjoy the board use because of large format; it is easier for them to run programs by tapping on the board rather than mouse clicking. Children can also write on the board with their fingers rather than use a stylus, which for some of our children is difficult. This technology is also great for children who need additional sensory stimulation because it is touch sensitive. The ability to touch the board, see the screen, and hear the trainer read the words satisfies the needs of kinesthetic, visual and auditory learners. Also, any notes or drawings can be saved or printed out which is useful when speaking with parents about their child’s progress. Thanks to the grant received by Fort Bend Cares, two digital electronic whiteboards with SMARTBoard software and projector will be purchased for the Texana Children’s Center for Autism. This will make the transition from their treatment program to the regular mainstream classroom so much easier for the child and assist the child in continuing to unlocking his or her potential in the future.

Kevin Gardner and Crissy Nolen are the King and Queen Bees, or Co-Chairs, of the 3rd Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee. Have you heard the newzzzz?! The bees are buzzing around Fort Bend County as the Literacy Council’s 3rd Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee is quickly approaching! The Grown-Up Spelling Bee is a corporate-style luncheon that will take place on Friday, August 24th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the University of Houston-Sugar Land. Pretty In Pink – Town Square Family-fun charity event to benefit local cancer patients Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (MSLH) and the Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) are teaming up to host a charitable event to benefit Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s cancer patients. Pretty In Pink – Town Square, presented by Breast Surgeons Dr. Sandra Templeton and Dr. Kelly Dempsey, scheduled for Friday, October 19th, at Sugar Land Town Square. At the family-fun event, there will be live music, kid’s activities, the famous pink fire truck, and at sun-down, they will light up Town Square pink. The famous pink fire truck travels across the country as a part of the “Pink Heals Tour” to help raise money to fight cancer. Everyone will have the opportunity to sign the pink fire truck. Keynote speaker, former Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance president and Breast Cancer Survivor Gail Parker, will share how her optimism helped her stay positive while battling breast cancer. All monies raised will stay in the community to help MSLH patients who need personal assistance in their battle against cancer. “Pretty In Pink – Town Square benefits this amazing cause, and I am proud to be associated as the presenting sponsor,” says Dr. Dempsey, Breast Surgeon. “As a breast surgeon, I see the financial toll a cancer diagnosis can take on my patients. Raising money for the MSLH/FBJSL Cancer Endowment gives me the opportunity to help my patients on a different level.” “I am excited to be a part of this community event with such a great cause,” says Dr. Templeton, Breast Surgeon. “I especially like the fact that all money donated will stay at our hospital and relieve some of my patients’ financial burdens.” Event organizers have already raised more than $50,000 from sponsors and are hoping for a large turnout at the event to maximize the amount of aid that can be distributed to local cancer patients. “It is great to see the community come together for such a great cause,” said Leena Taneja, sponsorship chair and

The Adventure Begins at International Preparatory School Parents have several choices when it comes to the education of their children. Those that visit the International Preparatory School are looking for something very specific. They are searching for a fresh philosophy and a renewed energy in teaching. Smaller class sizes rank as the number one concern. Why? This provides individual attention for students that require more support in some areas while addressing the needs of the gifted child. This all translates into a school where both the teachers and the administration set common expectations in an open, interactive, understanding and energizing manner. Parents want a safe environment that maintains a high standard of discipline and respect, while fostering a strong sense of community through school wide activities for all ages. Emphasis on well rounded education makes participation in extracurricular activities such as music

and art an integral part of the everyday curriculum. Studies demonstrate that healthy competition, be it through math or chess clubs, lead to a higher motivation in learning. Going to school should be an adventure. That adventure begins at age 4 at the International Preparatory School with a creative learning environment that continues through elementary and middle school. The curriculum aspires balanced academics while developing a strong social, physical, and moral aptitude. The International Preparatory School is the choice many parents are making for their children because it is an environment that fosters the gifted and accelerated student as well as the under confident. If you have great expectations for your child, come by and experience the vibrant atmosphere at the International Preparatory School for yourself. Please call 281-208-1403. fort bend

Primrose School of First Colony Will My Child Be Ready for Elementary School? More and more parents are recognizing the importance of enrolling their children in preschool to help them develop the right foundation for success in elementary school and beyond. The best programs go beyond helping children master basic academic skills by supporting their development as happy, confident, well-rounded individuals. Research shows that from birth to age 5, changes and growth in all areas of development are rapid. Children form strong neural connections during this time as a result of experiences they have with everyone and everything they encounter. The quality of those early interactions determines how children continue to learn and form relationships, strongly influencing their future success and happiness. “Informed parents look for preschool, pre-K, and kindergarten programs that take a balanced approach to developing motor, social-emotional, creative, and academic skills,” said Dr. Mary Zurn, vice president of education for Primrose Schools. “It takes quality instruction, a well-rounded curriculum, and a positive teacher relationship to prepare a child to succeed.” Will your child be ready to enter elementary school? Selecting the right childcare or preschool program is a critical step in helping your child succeed. Plan to tour schools at least one year in advance so you have plenty of time to apply and enroll your child. To learn more about Primrose School of First Colony, visit www.primrosefirstcolony.com or call 281-565-2707.

Work Hard, Play Hard at Safety America Well, we are in the middle of summer, and for most kids, it’s playtime. And where can they do it best? At Safety America’s Summer Sports Camp in First Colony. Kids get to unwind big-time with a multitude of activities including indoor rock wall climbing, an incredible 90-foot zip-line, Jedi sword fighting, karate, basketball, kickball, dodge ball, rope swinging, and a moonwalk, just to name a few. And, to beat the summer heat, it all takes place in a huge air-conditioned facility. Of course, the best part for mom is she doesn’t have to sign up for two weeks or even one week for that matter. If you want, your child can come for just one day, but careful, one day may turn into several. Mom will appreciate being able to drop the kids off when it fits her schedule. Back to school is just around the corner, and then, it will be time for kids to be working hard. They will need all of the concentration, respect, and confidence they can muster, and these are the kind of things they learn at a good martial arts school. Safety America Karate has been around Fort Bend County for over 30 years. The classes are fun, safe, and teach children much more than self-defense. They teach success skills that help you, your child, and your child’s teachers to accomplish more. Come and visit any of their three locations, and try a free class. Call 281-9803030 or visit www.safetyamericacenter.com for more information. See ad on page 55. fort bend

Play, Have Fun, and Learn at Sugar Land Gymnastics & Dance How do you improve your child’s life without them knowing it? Bring them to Sugar Land Gymnastics & Dance (SLG) where summer camp is going on. Your kids will think they are just having great time bouncing on the trampoline, swinging on the trapeze, sliding down the giant moonwalk slide, tip-toeing across the balance beam, and tumbling on a large padded mat. Then, of course, there are stranger danger lessons, karate classes, singing, dancing, arts and crafts, and ninja hide and seek. All things that they think are fun, but are also activities that will help the development of a child of 4 to 10 years of age by combining and establishing a focus on motor muscles, focus, concentration, and balance with all the elements that build a solid foundation for a healthy and well-rounded child. So, what happens after summer camp? Well, some summer camp kids will roll into gymnastics classes at SLG. They will already have useful skills and may even be a little bit ahead of the other guys and gals. Don’t forget that SLG also has programs for kids 18 months to 2-1/2 years (Mom & Me) and toddlers’ ages 2-1/2 to 4 years old. And, for kids who love to dance, “Dance Sugar Land” is the newest and fastest growing dance program in Sugar Land. Classes in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Hip-Hop and Zumba are held upstairs in the newly remodeled Sugar Land Gymnastics facility. The new Sugar Land Gymnastics & Dance is located at 16215 Lexington in First Colony. For more information, call 281-240-0999 or visit www.sugarlandgymnastics.com.

Fort Bend Academy of Dance Fort Bend Academy of Dance (FBAD) has focused on the needs and dreams of aspiring young dancers since 1999. Directed by Michael Banigan and Dianne Jarrell, the emphasis of FBAD is on dance as a performing art rather than a competitive event. The school strongly believes in an avenue for personal expression and an opportunity to fulfill professional aspirations. Many of our students are currently pursuing professional careers or degrees in dance. The Academy utilizes an age and level based curriculum that emphasizes the proper technique of classical ballet as the basis for all other dance forms. We offer classes in classical ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary, and tap. There are also four divisions in the Academy from pre-school through pre-professional. FBAD is also the home of BalletForte, the premier pre-professional ballet company in the area. BalletForte is a member of Regional Dance America/Southwest and has been entertaining audiences with its’ annual production of The Nutcracker for the past 16 years. Fort Bend Academy of Dance provides an encouraging environment where every student is expected to strive for excellence to the best of their ability while experiencing the pure joy of movement. They, in turn, are committed to making a positive contribution to the lives of our students and our community. This is achieved by giving students the individualized guidance and attention that they are entitled to while instilling the value of commitment, respect, hard work, discipline, and artistry. Want to dance? We have room for you at the barre. Call Fort Bend Academy of Dance at 281-277-5735 or visit http://www.fbadance.com for more information.

What sets one dance studio apart from another? A trained dancer with the Royal Academy Ballet, D’ann Shaver Gimenez, owner and executive director of Laeral, understands the importance of professional performance dancers as teachers and so employs only the best. For example, there is Kerry Jackson, the contemporary, jazz, and hip hop instructor at Laeral. He is nothing less of a showstopper having danced for the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company for the past four years along with Alvin Ailey in New York every summer. Herman Charles III, the hip hop director at Laeral, is also no stranger to stardom. He has choreographed celebrities such as the X Factor finalists, the Stereo Hogz, Mathew Knowles of Destiny’s Child, Solange Knowles, and Frankie J., along with many more, and has also done choreography for the Grammy’s. Laeral’s artistic director Sharon Teague offers a comprehensive and unique vision of dance as a first retired soloist from Houston’s own Houston Ballet and trains the young to ‘raise the barre’ concerning their technique and classical ballet skills. Finally, Kristin Thompson Martin brings discipline and expertise in Classical ballet and performance from being a retired company member of the Pittsburg Ballet Theatre. Whether you are looking for a fun summer class, camp or continuing training, Laeral Dance Academy not only offers these in every area of dance, but also adds the professional security of working with instructors who have made performance careers out of their love of the craft. Information about Summer Classes, Dance Camps and more can be found at info@laeraldance.com or 281-969-7054.

This past year as a senior, John enjoyed being the “top dog” at the school and becoming a member of the Senior Leadership Group. As a member of this group, John acted as a liaison between the students and administration. The group organized senior field trips, prom, senior shirts and other fundraisers. Some of the fundraisers included a talent show, food sales during lunch, and a fashion show. For the talent show, John was the Emcee. “I have hosted pageants and talent shows before, and I feel very comfortable speaking in front of crowds; so, it wasn’t hard for me to step up and be the Emcee,” said John. “I am a very outspoken guy, so I was excited to Emcee the show.” In addition to emceeing the talent show, John also modeled in the fashion show. John enjoys being in front of a group of people; therefore, he joined the Writers Block club to be able to express his

In this club, the members present different pieces of work that they have written to express their thoughts and feelings about the world and the issues plaguing them as young adults. Not only can John write, but he can also sing and act. He joined the choir as a freshman at Hightower High School because he knew that it would be a good learning opportunity. When he transferred to Bush his sophomore year, John became the section leader of the Tenors. Also, during his sophomore year, John was chosen as the lead male role in the school musical, Once Upon a Mattress.

John enjoyed, once again, being on stage and performing for the audience. He likes both acting and singing, but if he had to pick his favorite, John would choose acting. “Acting is more of a challenge for me than singing,” said John. “I was not born with acting talent. I had to learn how to act and perfect it, whereas with singing, I feel that it just came naturally.” Cooking just came naturally for John as well. In his first two years of high school, John discovered his love of cooking. During his junior year, John took a Culinary Arts class that allowed him to learn more about his chosen profession. The class focused mainly on baking, rather than cooking. However, even though John prefers cooking to baking, he did learn a great deal because he was taken out of his comfort zone. His biggest challenge was when the class was assigned to make bread from scratch. John quickly learned that bread is very high maintenance, and everything needs to be perfect for it to turn out correctly. John’s favorite dish to make is Asian Chicken Stir-Fry; Asian cuisine is his genre of choice. To perfect his cooking skills, John will be attending Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island in the fall. He will be double majoring in Culinary Arts and Psychology. Eventually, John would like to open his own chain of hotels. He is also interested in opening a gourmet restaurant and following the hot trends of the restaurant industry. With his genuine personality, confidence and multi-tasking capability, we have no doubt that John will succeed and reach his goals in life one “plate” at a time. Congratulations John on your high school graduation, and we hope to “taste” your success in the future.

Texas Fare N

ews travels fast in Katy when there is a new restaurant to try, and Dekker’s is so worth it. Right down the street from the newer sections of Cinco Ranch, Dekker’s is a short drive on FM 1093. The layout is quite charming if you decide to dine inside and be entertained with the open kitchen concept and tony bar area, along with a room for special gatherings. Outside there is a large deck with front row seats to some great live music, a fire pit that is especially enticing during the winter months, and stacks of fragrant mesquite wood. We couldn’t help but sing along to our favorite songs because, after all, we were celebrating our friend Wayne’s birthday. There were six of us in all, and while I am usually on my own and don’t name names to protect the innocent, I must say that our friend, Todd, who in some circles is considered an accomplished brisket king and all-around good cook, was a big help in defining the whole dining experience here. After receiving our drinks, which ranged from ice cold beers to martinis, we commenced our appetizer extravaganza so to speak. They included perfectly cooked scallops in an exquisite leek

sauce – think melt in your mouth delicious – smothered mushrooms, unlike typical “stuffed” mushrooms, these are infused with garlic and topped with cheese – plus served with house-made yeast roll points. If you like mushrooms, these are a real delight. Next came the margherita flatbread with tomato, basil, and a chef’s cheese blend. It is very satisfying and light so it’s not overfilling before an entrée course. Once those selections were gone, we set our sights on the Hog Wings. Wow! The mesquite broiled pork shanks with chipotle barbeque sauce are as tender as can be and fall right off of the bone. They are truly a work of art. I would like to say that I tried the quail legs, which are wrapped in bacon and stuffed with jalapenos and Monterey jack cheese, but the plate was empty before I knew it. From all accounts, our group loved them. I have to admit that we also had a shrimp and avocado cocktail, swimming in a lovely cocktail salsa and accompanied by tortilla chips, but keep in mind that all of these were split six ways. There are additional appetizers that we will try next time we are there, such as stuffed crab, poblano chicken tortilla soup and a few others, because we have to leave some surprises for future trips. Our entrees consisted of two items from the mesquite grill: the rib eye of 100 percent Angus beef, aged in-house for tenderness and flavor and plated with smashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and “good jus,” and the bacon wrapped filet Rotisserie chicken and house made dressings adorn several salad choices. that is served with Dekker’s fort bend

Fine dining as well as Texas-style specialties are commonly found among the offerings. Texas Hunter sauce and served with the same sides. They were both exceptionally juicy and flavorful. I had the roasted mesquite chicken salad, which is a mix of shredded rotisserie chicken with candied pecans, dried cranberries, bleu cheese, apples, and tomatoes dressed in a sherry vinaigrette. It was nice and refreshing and would make a nice summer entrée for lunch or dinner. We also had a bowl of seafood gumbo at our table and it was well received as well. No special occasion should ever take place without dessert, so we shared three. Of course, the classic Bananas Foster is always such a treat. Served in fine restaurants all over, it has butter, bananas, brown sugar, dark rum, cinnamon, and banana liqueur and is served over vanilla ice cream. It was created at Brennan’s in New Orleans in the early 50s. I have made it myself many times. It can be quite entertaining for guests as long as they keep a good distance from the flambé pan! We also had the buttermilk pie served with a raspberry coulis, which is a thick puree of fruit sauce. It is very, very good. The chocolate cake was our third dessert, and it disappeared quickly, too. The cupcakes from Ooh La La waiting at home were safe for the evening when it was decided they would be served the following day. I almost forgot to mention the housemade yeast rolls that we also tried on our visit. They are served with a good gravy that is made from a rich stock

produced in Dekker’s kitchen, where quality and freshness is clearly evident. I would highly recommend all of the selections we tried, but there is more to the menu. Sections devoted to fresh seafood, pasta, salads, and burgers and sandwiches sound wonderful. Another big draw to Dekker’s is the friendly atmosphere and Texas-style décor. I have to say the service and food hit all the marks for us, and we will definitely try to go back when we want to escape the hustle and bustle of our every day lives and experience great food and entertainment in such a nice ambience.

The expansive deck and fire pit offer outdoor seating and the interior has a dining room, bar and private room.

Meet Chef /Owner Anthonie Dekker A classically trained European chef, Anthonie Dekker has taken his experiences in the restaurant, private celebrity chef world, high-end country club and service industry backgrounds and created his own place to present the best of everything he knows to area diners. I recently had the pleasure of touring his kitchen and getting to know him and his intentions with Dekker’s Mesquite Grill. He lives in Fulshear with his wife and 14-year-old daughter.

Growing up in Holland, were you always interested in cooking?

You honed your skills in Europe and in other parts of the U.S. in restaurants and hotels. What would you consider your most transformative experience? Working for the Macaroni Grill was the most exciting moment in my career because I learned how to work with a real mesquite grill and enjoyed making the fresh homemade pastas.

You seem to have embraced Texas as your own. How long have you lived here? I moved to Texas in 1990. I enjoy the cowboy lifestyle I learned while working on a ranch, and I love Texas! What are your top priorities as a restaurant

owner?

The answer to that is two things: I insist that all of my employees are guest obsessed and quality obsessed.

What is the best advice you have ever received? My dad always told me to cook the things that I know how to do really well and to always cook from the heart and be passionate. I am doing all of these things! A beautiful seafood dish from the menu at Dekker’s.

M edical F ocus MD Anderson in Katy Adds Specialist in Prostate, Genitourinary Cancers Papadopoulos launches multidisciplinary prostate clinic John Papadopoulos, M.D., has joined The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Regional Care Center in Katy, providing the community a new level of expertise in cancers of the prostate, kidneys, and bladder. Papadopoulos, a urologist who specializes solely in cancer, leads a multidisciplinary genitourinary team in Katy composed of a surgeon, radiation oncologist, and genitourinary medical oncologist. The collaborative approach ensures that each patient receives the highest level of cancer care from a coordinated and efficient team that specializes in specific disease sites. As a prostate cancer specialist and surgeon, Papadopoulos and his team extend the services offered at MD Anderson in the Texas Medical Center to patients in Katy and the surrounding communities. These services include a multidisciplinary prostate cancer clinic where patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer receive comprehensive information on treatment options at one place on a single day. The clinic is designed to help every patient diagnosed with prostate cancer be well informed about their treatment options so they can choose what is best for them. In some cases of low-risk disease, men do not require up-front treatment and can be monitored closely. Called active surveillance, this strategy allows patients with slow-growing and non-threatening prostate cancers a safe alternative to more invasive options. “There are so many options now for men diagnosed with prostate cancer, it can be very confusing,” said Papadopoulos. “Even within surgical treatments, there are multiple options ranging from robotics to cryosurgery, and with radiation, from proton to brachytherapy to intensity modulated ra-

diation therapy (IMRT). We want to give patients one place to talk to a number of specialists at once so they can take in all the information and then make a decision that’s appropriate for them.” According to Papadopoulos, a diagnosis of prostate cancer seldom means a rush to treatment. If a patient has an elevated PSA and prostate cancer is suspected or even confirmed, he advises that men take the time to find a team that offers a wide variety of treatment options. “When patients hear the word ‘cancer,’ their entire world changes,” said Papadopoulos. “Because it’s a life-changing diagnosis, patients need to step back, take a deep breath and learn everything they can about the disease and treatment. They need to ask probing questions and find a team with whom they’re most comfortable.” In addition to diagnosing and treating men with prostate cancer, Papadopoulos will see patients with kidney, bladder and testicular cancer. As an MD Ander-

son faculty member, Papadopoulos also is assistant professor in the Department of Urology in the Division of Surgery. Papadopoulos completed a two-year fellowship at MD Anderson prior to joining the Katy center. In addition to his clinical fellowship in urologic oncology, he completed a one-year research fellowship working in the lab of Isaiah J. Fidler, D.V.M., Ph.D., one of the world’s leading experts in cancer metastasis, or spread of the disease. According to Papadopoulos, understanding the biology of metastasis is vital, since it is the spread of cancer to other parts of the body that causes cancer to be lethal. A native Houstonian, Papadopoulos attended medical school at Texas Tech University School of Medicine and completed his internship in general surgery and urology residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from The University of Texas at Austin. “In my third year of medical school, I knew I wanted to be a surgeon and wanted to treat cancer,” he said. “I wanted my practice to be very patient centered. It’s all about them and their families being comfortable and understanding everything associated with their diagnosis, disease, treatment and recovery.” In addition to his training at MD Anderson, Papadopoulos lived and observed the institution’s mission and philosophy of care throughout his life. His father, Nicholas Papadopoulos, M.D., is a professor in the Department of Melanoma Oncology. John Papadopoulos is one of three specialized surgeons now at the Katy Regional Care Center. He joins Mark Zefereo, M.D., who specializes in head and neck surgery, and Jessica Suarez Colen, M.D., who focuses on breast surgery. The Katy center is one of four regional care centers bringing MD Anderson’s standard of care into the Houston community. It is located on the campus of CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital.

Community Health Choice Offers $7 Million Program to Improve Healthcare in Southeast Texas Eligible Organizations Urged to Apply by July 27, 2012

Community Health Choice, Inc. (CHC) today announced that it will fund a $7 million Community Benefits Program in support of the organization’s mission to improve the health of underserved residents of Southeast Texas through increased access to healthcare services and improved integration and coordination of care. Applications for the new program will be accepted through Friday, July 27, 2012 at 5 p.m. CST from eligible organizations throughout CHC’s service area, comprised of 20 counties: Harris, Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Tyler, Walker, Waller and Wharton. “The CHC board of directors has approved the establishment of the Community Benefits Program for healthcare organizations whose initiatives directly impact our mission,” said CHC President and CEO Ken Janda. “Further, since poverty is the leading social determinant of health status, funding will also be available to selected educational institutions that focus on helping our members and their families improve either their economic conditions or their health, thus reducing the number of underserved persons in need of our programs.” Applications for the Community Benefits Program are available on the CHC website at www.CHCHealth.org; click on “Community Benefits Program.” Completed applications must be submitted with requested supporting materials via CBProgram@CHCHealth.org. Funding for healthcare projects will be evaluated against the following criteria: • The estimated number of current or potential CHC members impacted

• The potential to demonstrate increased service capacity (geographic or otherwise), particularly among CHC network providers • The potential to improve health outcomes, including but not limited to well-child exam and immunization rates, decreased unnecessary utilization of emergency rooms, primary C-section rates, preterm birth rates, and other population health and wellness indicators • The potential to improve the cost efficiency of care as well as access and quality • The distribution of funds throughout the CHC service area • An external validation of the need for the proposed project (i.e., Health of Houston Survey, United Way Community Assessment, etc.). Applications for educational projects will be evaluated based on: • The estimated number of current or potential CHC members impacted • The degree of collaboration among the proposing community-based organizations • A focus on public/charter school educational programs. Since CHC was originally formed by the Harris County Hospital District (HCHD) and the two organizations’ shared history, mission and service area overlap, 40-50 percent of the CHC Community Benefits Program funding has been allocated to HCHD. However, HCHD must apply through the same process as all other organizations and meet the same program criteria. than 5,000 doctors and 50 hospitals, CHC serves over 230,000 members of low-income families through individual and limited benefit small group plans. In 2010 and 2011, CHC received an average of $494 million to provide services to its members: • 90 percent was paid directly to physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers for patient care • 7 percent covered CHC administrative expenses to maintain its provider network, assist in coordinating member care, pay providers and ad minister its contracts with the State of Texas • 2 percent was returned to the State of Texas in premium taxes and experience rebates • 1 percent was used for reserves and expansion. During fiscal 2011, CHC arranged and paid for $440 million medical services for its members in the Southeast Texas Gulf Coast region. anal sphincter muscle. Using the LIFT technique, Dr. Balasubramaniam identifies the fistula tract (which is like a scarred hollow tube) as it travels between the layers of the anal sphincter muscle. She then cuts and sutures off the tract and removes associated infected tissue – without cutting through the anal sphincter muscle itself. “Not all fistulas need to be treated in this manner, but it does offer better outcomes for patients with the most complex cases,” said Dr. Balasubramaniam. “We have now done many of these procedures at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, with great success. I recommend that patients see a trained colorectal specialist before making a decision on treatment. The LIFT procedure can give patients a significantly improved future quality of life.” To schedule an appointment with Dr. Balasubramaniam or a colorectal surgeon in your area, please call (281) 274-7500 or for more information about Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit MethodistSugarLand.com.

Living the Sweet Life:

Books, Books and Movies and More!

W

hen I was a child, my Big Daddy and Granny would come pick me up right after Baptist choir camp to spend a month or so with them in the mountains. It was in many ways a very special time. Cousins would come and go, but it was particularly fantastic that I alone was chosen to stay all summer long. Perhaps it was because I looked just like my mother and for my grandparents, it was a way for them to stay close to their daughter vicariously through me. In any case by late June, I was whisked away from the heat of Monroe and taken to the cool mountain air in search of perfect cantaloupes and watermelons, mountain hikes and fishing. Each week, Big Daddy and I would go down the mountain to Boone to shop and say hello to friends. My favorite store there was called “The Curiosity Shop.” It was filled with books and had a quirky staircase with even more books. Big Daddy and I had stumbled upon it years ago, and each week we made a point to drop by. He would give me a handful of money, wink at me and say, “Now I’ll stay right here in the car and let you get your shopping done.” The store owner knew me, and she knew that I loved reading. I also loved paper dolls. There was this collection of paper dolls, and each girl had her own pop together house. All of the paper dolls I collected over one summer and each week like a new neighbor moving in, I would assemble them along the ledges in the sun room. I remember one had a kitten while the other had a dog. It was a lot of fun.... free from any electronics. I remember also reading books like A Wrinkle in Time, Nancy Drew, and everything Judy Blume wrote. I could devour a book a week and sometimes even more if no other family was visiting. Films have always been a big part of my married life. Brian is more of a movie watcher than a book reader, and we

always find ourselves “in the know” if you will when it comes to films. Lionsgate Films contacted me a few months ago and asked me to be a part of their sweepstakes surrounding their latest movie entitled What to Expect When You’re Expecting. We were both pleased and more than a little honored when they called to ask us to be in Los Angeles at the world premier and walk the red carpet with Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz amongst others.
