READERS FEEDBACK October Issue featured Breast Cancer Awareness...
Successful JEWELS event...
Hi Lisa, I just received the October Issue of the Fort Bend Focus and it is the best October issue ever! I know I say that every year, but you improve it every year. I especially like the “Did You Know” sidebar feature. While we survivors (I am 10 yrs.) love to celebrate, we also fully realize the importance of education and awareness. You so expertly and completely disseminate that information to all your readers. I was just thrilled to see that two of my favorite people were your featured Survivors. Joan is one of my support group sisters (Survivors Offering Support) and Nancy is one of my fellow Pink Ribbon Survivor Volunteers. I must mention Alisa as well. Her devotion to Joan (and support of us survivors) shows she is a friend any one of us would be lucky to have. Last, and not least, I want to thank you for always supporting the breast cancer community and putting both heart and soul into this issue. I know how very dear this cause is to you! Blessings, Rosemary Herron

COVER STORY
Mario Pedone Devotes His Life To The Pursuit of Accordion Musical Perfection By Linda K. Eaves • Photos by Nesossi Studios
A
ccordionist Mario Pedone captivates his audiences whether he’s playing for 15,000 people in Sweden or a group of Alzheimer’s patients in Conroe. A standing ovation is common when Mario performs in concerts for audiences the world over. One of his more memorable experiences was when he played in the Classic Music Conservatory in Beijing, China. Hundreds of younger people from the conservatory were there in line waiting to get his autograph. “I loved it,” said Mario. He also performed at the largest accordion festival in the world in Sweden. “It was a beautiful experience,” he said, where in a big arena he played for 15,000 people. Speaking with a melodious Italian accent, Mario Pedone relates his love of playing beautiful music on the accordion. “When I play the accordion, I feel great, excellent. The music is my life. I’ve been playing music since I was eight years old. I play because when I see the faces of the people who listen to me, I think they understand what I do. That makes me happy.” “It’s not just an instrument that you play – you have to give your soul. You have to melt with the music, give life to the music. You need to transmit everything you feel to the minds of the people that are listening.” Recently, he returned from Montreal, Canada. “The concert fort bend

was excellent.” Two days later, he gave an accordion workshop where he taught students a new technique. In addition to the accordion, Mario also plays the keyboard. “I play the keyboard because it has all of the background music. People like to dance to the keyboard. It’s better for dancing,” he explained. “You can listen to drums, bass, trumpet, and violins in the background.” However, when Mario performs in concert, he plays the accordion.
The Early Years
Mario was born in Valenzano, a small town near Bari in Southern Italy. In an effort to improve the family’s financial situation, the Pedones immigrated to Valencia, Venezuela in 1959. Mario’s older brother, Ludovico, had begun to study the accordion, and Mario was always watching him, hoping to one day play this wonderful instrument. He persistently begged his father to let him start accordion lessons, too, and eventually succeeded. After graduation with a degree of “Professor of Accordion,” he founded his own accordion school where he had over 125 students. Most of his former students now play professionally. Mario was also member and co-founder of the Orquesta Latina together with famous Spanish singer Esteban Abarca and has performed throughout Venezuela. He has won numerous championships with both the accordion and organ.

He continues to perform professionally in many countries. Mario has his own recording studio in Sugar Land where he arranges and records hundreds of tunes including many of his own compositions. His musical range includes, but is not limited to, Classical, Latin, European, and American Standards. He also produces CDs and cassettes for other musicians. Mario has performed in concerts

in New York, Dallas, Austin, Boston, Montreal, Vancouver, Beijing and Shenyang, and many other cities in the United States. He also performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 2008 and 2011, and of course, right here in Fort Bend at The Imperial Theatre. “The Imperial Theatre was proud to host world-famous accordionist Mario Pedone in May 2011, through The Imperial Concert Series,” said Edward Crowell, Executive Director of Imperial Performing Arts. “Mr. Pedone’s unique talent is matched only by his warmth and graciousness with his audiences. Two performances were near capacity, and the enthusiastic audiences demanded encores

from Pedone at the end of each concert, which included pieces that one would not expect to hear on accordion. ‘World-class’ describes Mario Pedone’s virtuosity, grace, love of music and love of our community.”
Back to the Accordion
Mario actually left the accordion for 15 years when he went into the business of dealing in musical instruments from Italy. He gives credit to two men who were key in bringing him back to the accordion – Peter Widmark and George Cherneko. “I was performing a lot, mostly on the keyboard in a German restaurant here in Houston called The Old Heidelberg for six days a week. The contract was very good. One day a man, Peter Widmark, came up to me and asked if I knew Swedish music. I did not.” “Oh, I have lots of music. I can give it to you,” Peter said. “But it’s for the accordion, not for the keyboard.” Peter asked, “Could you teach me?” Mario didn’t want to go back to teaching so he said no, find another teacher. Peter kept pushing and urging Mario to teach him. Mario said, “Give me a break. I don’t want to teach.” Peter called Mario at his home, and the two men became friends. Peter urged him again and again. Finally, Mario gave in and said he would teach Peter. Peter said, “Well, I’m going to pay you very good to teach me.”
“I love music because I think music is part of our soul. Music is international and unites people,” Mario said.
“I went back to the accordion. My God, I had lost 50% of my technique!” said Mario. “And then, he gave me one month to practice because I needed to train him. I started to train him again and again. And this friend, Peter, was the guy who pushed me back to the accordion. Peter then invited me to a festival in Sweden, and I went back to the accordion.” “Later, I was at an accordion convention in Dallas having some coffee. A guy named Joe Vento called me. Many years ago he was famous with a band called Three Sons – a very good musician. With him was George Cherneko who said, ‘Oh, I’ve been looking for you a long time. Can you teach me to play the accordion? I live in Conroe.’” Mario told him he lived in Sugar Land, but he could go to Conroe if George would find more students. He did, so Mario began to teach in Conroe. “George asked me ‘Do you like to travel? I can sponsor you to travel around the country so the people can start to know you.’ So George became my manager and took me to all of the accordion festivals in the United States and Canada. I give a lot of credit to George Cherneko for helping me.” “I’m in the accordion business thanks to Peter Widmark and George Cherneko. I’m so happy now. I never should have left the accordion.”
don’t always remember their name or Mario’s name, but once he starts playing his accordion, they remember the words and will sing along to songs such as “Beer Barrel Polka,” “Tennessee Waltz,” and “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.” About every two months, Mario cooks food for about 150 people at his Christian church. His specialties are Chicken Parmesan, Pasta Al Freda, and Bar-B-Q. When the food is ready, he announces, “Mangiare!” which means Eat! in Italian. Afterwards, he plays the accordion and the people dance to his music. On December 14, 2003, he founded the Fort Bend County Accordion Club which is comprised of 30 to 40 members including Fort Bend County Sheriff Milton Wright. The president is Vince Ramos, and the club meets every two months at The Terrace in Sugar Land. Mario recently celebrated his 60th birthday on October 5th and, starting in January, will slow down on his travels. He wants to start a school in Sugar Land
to teach the keyboard and accordion. Even though he will be decreasing his traveling time, he will continue playing beautiful music on the accordion that he loves so much. “Music is my life,” said Mario. He met his wife, Marbella, when she was his piano student in Valencia, Venezuela. They have been married now for 35 years and have lived in Sugar Land 26 years. The couple has two sons, two daughters and five grandchildren. His children have a good ear and love music but they don’t play a musical instrument, Mario said with a laugh. Mario loves all kinds of music but especially enjoys “The Wind Beneath My Wings” and the music of Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and, of course, classical music. “I respect the different styles of music: jazz, Latin, merengue, salsa.” “If someone wants to learn an instrument, my advice to them would be: love the music. Any instrument that

can make sound is beautiful. I like to see people performing through clarinet, violin, symphony orchestra, band, and piano. When the music starts and people start to dance, an American asks a Latino to dance or a Latino asks Russian to dance. I love music because I think music is part of our soul. Music is international and unites people,” Mario said. According to Mario’s website, many of Mario’s students feel that he is too modest, and that with more exposure, he would quickly be recognized as a musical genius who has devoted his life to the pursuit of accordion musical perfection. • FBF

O
ur last three articles have been preparing investors for the summer hurricane. The old adage “Sell in May and go away” certainly applied this year. May, June, August, and September were all down with the latter two months down severely. During this time, we’ve experienced endless commentary about the bankruptcy of Greece, the demise of the Euro zone, failure of European banks, a second U.S. recession, the United States losing its AAA rating and witnessing our Congress in action or inaction vis a vis raising the debt ceiling. Few stocks have been spared thus fear and panic has resurfaced. As we’ve written before, these problems are not unique to investing. Just like hurricanes, these problems seem to appear in the summer and intensify in the fall. According to the Stock Traders Almanac, September has been the worst performing month since 1950. Most investors remember the big sell-offs in October and think it is the worst. However, October is known as the “bear killer” month and can and has provided some of the best buying opportunities this writer can remember. We may very well be approaching that buying zone soon. This is the time to begin thinking about investing in equities and preparing your “buy” list. The
news may get worse but the opportunities and prices are getting better. We would be remiss not to mention that this is the one year anniversary of Meredith Whitney’s prediction of massive defaults in municipal bonds. Her predictions caused massive sell-offs in tax-free bonds last year. Astute investors used this sell-off to buy municipal bonds at much higher yields than available today. This is another example of using “fear” to your advantage. As for Whitney’s prediction of massive defaults, less than .03% of the existing municipal bonds have defaulted over the past year according to Bloomberg. If you are interested in investing in either tax-free bonds or equities and would like to learn more about how we use “greed and fear” to our clients’ advantage, contact us today at 713-853-0879 or visit us online at www.HardeeInvestmentGroup.com. We look forward to your call!

We look forward to expanding this mission to the Memorial and Katy areas with the absolutely! magazines.” With an extensive newspaper background, the Fredrickson’s started Fort Bend Focus magazine in 2004, and it quickly became the magazine focusing on people, places and happenings in Fort Bend. absolutely! Memorial, veteran journalist and television host Lara Bell will serve as the associate publisher. A familiar face in the greater Houston area, Lara hosted a weekly magazine show, Wild about Houston, on KTBU-TV Channel 55 for the past fourteen years, and she and her family reside in Memorial. Her emphasis for the magazine will be to continue to tell compelling, fun stories while supporting the community she loves. “My goal is to make absolutely! Memorial magazine the go to neighborhood resource for information, fresh ideas and interesting tidbits,” said Bell. Katy resident Claudia Richter will serve as the associate publisher for absolutely! Katy. Claudia has served as the Editorin-Chief of the magazine for the past five years and brings not only her journalism skills to the publication but also plans to utilize another of her talents: her extensive culinary background. With a degree in culinary arts from Horst Mager Culinary Institute, Claudia plans to “beef” up not only the dining section with expert restaurant reviews, recipes and dining tips, her plans include focusing on area businesses. “Our goal with absolutely! Katy is to continue to be a vital part of our community focusing on our people and events while integrating the many aspects of our business community that make our area not only successful, but a great place to live, work and raise our families,” said Richter. For the remainder of 2011, the absolutely! titles will remain a bi-monthly publication with the completion of the November/December issue. Beginning in January of 2012, both magazines will be published monthly. For more information on Focus Media or any of their magazines, call 281.690.4242.

Two Local Non-Profits Work Together for Mutual Benefit
W
hy is it that non-profits don’t collaborate and work together for their common good? In general, non-profits are still uncomfortable even having a conversation about partnering. However, this is not the case with Texana Center and Fort Bend Seniors - Meals on Wheels. Two weeks ago the two Fort Bend County nonprofit organizations did exactly that and embarked on what they hope will be a long-term partnership to benefit both agencies. During a casual conversation at a breakfast meeting, Susan Whitacre, Volunteer Manager at Fort Bend Senior, mentioned the challenge in recruiting volunteers to Kevin Barker, Texana Director of Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Services. When Barker heard that Whitacre needed volunteers to clean the center where the Fort Bend Seniors meet and also needed help in packing meals ready for delivery to the homebound seniors, he immediately thought that Texana Center could provide the answer. In May, Barker put Whitacre in touch with Manuel Lopez, Manager of the newly opened Texana Learning Center at Rosenberg. Soon, the two realized there was a real opportunity for both agencies. Whitacre described the need for janitorial services, something which the Texana clients were already familiar with and currently doing for

Texana Center’s facilities in Rosenberg. As far as the packing of the meals for the homebound seniors, the Texana clients already had a contract with Alcove Medical Inc. to assemble medical kits, so how hard could it be to pack lunch? As it turns out it was no problem at all? The benefits of partnering soon became obvious. Texana’s clients would gain work experience by volunteering at Fort Bend Seniors and they would also develop a sense of pride while learning about giving back to the community. In turn, Fort Bend Seniors would benefit by having a clean facility, help in getting meals out at no extra cost, and both non-profits’ clients would also have an opportunity to socialize. At the first formal meeting with Fort Bend Seniors’ staff, there was some concern about the seniors interacting with Texana’s clients. So it was suggested that two non-profits have a joint social; Texana offered to bring the ‘Dream Team’ - a drill team made up of clients to perform for the seniors. This would be followed by a meet and greet. The event fort bend

was a great success and by early September, Texana’s trainers and clients had been through the volunteer orientation program, were issued their name badges, and were ready to start. In mid-September, six Texana clients turned out for their first day of volunteering and reported to Mary Valdez, Site Manager at Fort Bend Seniors. They were soon put to work packing meals, wiping down tables, sweeping. vacuuming, and cleaning windows. Valdez said, “I am very glad to have the help, and I am looking forward to interaction between the seniors, who attend the center daily and the Texana volunteers. The seniors will enjoy meeting these young people, and I am sure they can share lots of stories together.” Although Texana and Fort Bend Seniors serve different populations, they do have some similar needs and believe that with mutual respect, understanding and trust, this collaboration will be a win-win for both. Perhaps the two non-profits are setting an example for Washington! H

Southminster School students look on as ROTC members honor our nation’s flag at the 2010 “Prayer Around the Flagpole” celebration. The annual event recognizes U.S. military veterans. This year’s event will be held Thursday, Nov. 10 at Southminster School, 4200 Cartwright Road in Missouri City. Retired U.S. Army Capt. Will Reed will lead the ceremony.
families. Those names will be read in a continuous cadence by the school’s fourthand fifth-grade students. Additionally, all the students are being taught in weeks leading up to the event that freedom should not be taken for granted and that democracy provides us the privilege to stand proudly for our beliefs. All veterans attending the ceremony will be presented with a special, patriotic pin to wear so they may be recognized by the children and thanked for their service to our country. “This ceremony helps us impress upon our students the important roles of this nation’s service men and women,” said Head of School Helen Jackson. The morning will include patriotic songs, local dignitaries, and a speech by retired U.S. Army Capt. Will Reed, a Southminster parent and motivational speaker. The program will conclude with the playing of Taps. The community is invited for this special tribute to the men and women of our military to whom we owe so much. Located at 4200 Cartwright Road in Missouri City, Southminster School is a private Christian academy that serves children from 16 months through the fifth grade. Its student body is a reflection of the diverse, energetic community that surrounds the school, and its staff takes full advantage of the tools with which it is provided to help those children grow and learn through the early, critical years of development. Arc’s Best in the West Event Features Music, Barbecue, Auctions, High-Tech Texan One of Fort Bend’s most successful and fun fundraisers returns to the George Ranch Historical Park Arena in Richmond this November 19. The Arc of Fort Bend County’s 33rd Annual Best in the West Dinner, Dance and Auction kicks off at 6 p.m. featuring great dancing music, tasty barbecue and auction “bargains.” Michael Garfield, the “High-Tech Texan” will serve as master of ceremonies. Sponsored once again by Prosperity Bank, the Best in the West is bringing the ever-popular, Rosenberg-based Triumphs back for their third appearance as the musical entertainment. The Swinging Door will once again serve up heaping plates of barbecue and trimmings. Also returning is the popular silent auction featuring “corrals” of items gathered by groups and organizations. The live auction kicks off at 8 p.m., highlighted by an exotic game hunt for six on the legendary King Ranch, and much, much more. Garfield, a Sugar Land resident, will take the stage to keep the lively event moving and to urge guests to bid in the corrals and on the special bid board items. A radio talk show host and Internet consultant, Garfield works diligently in the community as a speaker and emcee and currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Houston Technology Center, Downtown Houston YMCA, Leadership Houston and the University of Houston College of Technology. Tickets are $50 each or $500 for a table of 10. For sponsorship information or tickets, please contact Jo Ann Stevens at 713-829-1827 or Ann Smith at 281-240-1313. Proceeds from the annual Best in the West benefit The Arc of Fort Bend helping maintain group homes, funding activity and work centers and providing for training and transportation for our citizens with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Familiar Songs Delight Even the Youngest Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra Concertgoers on December 4th
A
iden Miller was just under two when he attended his first Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra concert. “He went insane,” said his mother, Kristin Miller, recalling how her youngest child sat on her lap whispering questions about the instruments and musicians during FBSO’s Deck the Halls holiday concert in 2007. “We played pretend orchestra every night for the next year,” said Kristin of her family of eight that includes her husband, Clyde, and six children – the oldest of whom was 19 at the time. Because the concert spurred Aiden’s interest in string instruments, Kristin and Clyde bought him an inexpensive child-size violin. “He kept turning the violin upside down so he could be the cool guy with the long hair who plays bass with the Fort Bend Symphony,” said Kristin as she explained how FBSO bass player Joe Mack is the reason Aiden eventually
The Follis family: Woody, Raegen, Mona, Mattie, Evelyn, Zack, Brad and Christian. started taking piano lessons. An ardent supporter of the arts, Kristin and her family are looking forward to attending their fifth FBSO Deck the Halls concert at the Stafford Centre on Sunday, December 4. “This is a concert you feel comfortable bringing young children to and having them ask questions,” said Kristin of the annual holiday concert.
For Aiden, now six, his reason for attending FBSO concerts is much simpler. “Even boys play in it. And some are cool, like the bass player.” Kristin says her children enjoy hearing familiar songs at all FBSO concerts. “Oftentimes they don’t realize they already know a lot of classical music because they’ve heard it in commercials.”

Holiday concert
A family concert that’s a true holiday treasure
Aiden Miller takes a break after a family wedding. Familiar songs also appeal to Mona and Woody Follis’ four grandchildren who range in age from 9 to 4. “The grandkids like hearing the familiar songs they sing at school and church,” said Mona of the Deck the Halls concert. “They also like seeing Santa Claus and receiving candy.” She adds that even at non-holiday concerts her grandchildren generally know some of the music from movies they’ve watched. Like the Miller family, Mona and Woody Follis talk about the music with their young charges. Three years ago, the Follis couple purchased FBSO season tickets for themselves and their grandchildren. “Woody and I decided to attend Fort Bend Symphony concerts because we wanted to get the grandchildren listening to classical music and because the children are free,” said Mona. The Follis’ three oldest grandchildren are now taking music lessons. Zack, age 9, plays drums and guitar. His twin sister, Raegen, plays piano. Christian, age 5, plays guitar. “Having children grow up with a musical interest keeps them well rounded,” said Mona. Kristin agrees. She sees how the arts enrich the lives of children as she serves as outreach director of the Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center. “The arts are so important, said the Fort Bend County mom. “It’s what sets us apart from other mammals – our ability to create and be creative. Music also makes people learn math much quicker as it stimulates the logic areas of the brain.” Among the holiday favorites FBSO will perform on December 4 are March of the Toys, Frosty the Snowman, selections from The Nutcracker, Sleigh Ride and Let It Snow. Heroes live in us all – in our memories and in the actions we take when necessary. In Fort Bend County, we interact with heroes every day – policemen, firemen and EMTs. And, when we’re fortunate, we meet military personnel who serve our country today. It’s time to honor these heroes - our military personnel and civilian first responders. On the Marine Corps birthday and Veteran’s Day – November 10th and 11th – the Southwest 59 Sunrise Rotary Club and Operation American Heroes Foundation will pay tribute to our countrymen who put their lives on the line so that we may live in safety and peace. A Tribute to Our Military and 1st Responders will be held Thursday, November 10th at Sugar Creek Baptist Church from 7 to 9 p.m. Gen. Jerry Boykin, US Army (Ret), is an original member of America’s ultra secret Delta Force anti-terrorist command and is our featured speaker. This complimentary event will pay tribute to over 1000 Fort Bend first responders, military personnel and veterans. On Friday, November 11th (Veteran’s Day), there will be an incredible “Honor American Heroes Gala” in the Grand Ballroom of the Sugar Land Marriott in Town Square from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Over 1000 Patriots will be in attendance to honor Fort Bend’s finest. Todd Staples, Texas Agriculture Commissioner, is the keynote speaker and OAH will present the Soaring Patriotic American Eagle Award to our honorees for their Service Above Self commitment to our country and Fort Bend County. Be a hero to our 1st responders and military personnel in Fort Bend County by registering for your attendance for each event and purchase tickets/sponsorships to the Gala. Go to www.HonorAmericanHeroes.com for complete details.

Urban Harvest Farmers Market at Sugar Land Town Square will include farm-fresh produce, locally prepared foods to take away and plenty of delicious hot and cold food items to enjoy right at the market. For over 20 years, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry has been making sure that neighbors in our community have enough food to feed their families. Located in Stafford, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry operates the largest Food Pantry in Fort Bend, helping over 3,000 individuals every month. East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry is a place where residents in our community can go for food and emergency assistance when they have nowhere else to turn. Loss of jobs, increased food prices and economic uncertainty has lead to more people coming to the Ministry seeking help. “Most of those we help come to us when they’ve reached a point of choosing between paying the bills or feeding their families,” said Vickie Coates, Executive Director of EFBHNM. As the Ministry strives to provide food to our neighbors in need, donations are down by 10% and Food Pantry shelves are bare. East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry is in need your help! Consider holding a food drive or making a monetary donation. Please don’t delay. Your help is needed now. By making a donation to EFBHNM you are helping your Fort Bend neighbors who are struggling to makes ends meet during a difficult time in their lives. Clements Choir Receives National Recognition The Clements High School Choir program has received national recognition. The Foundation for Music Education announced this week that Clements High School Varsity Men’s Choir was named a National Winner in its annual Mark of Excellence/National Choral Honors Program. The Mark of Excellence consists of the National Wind Band Honors, the National Orchestra Honors, National Choral Honors, National Jazz Honors, and National Percussion Ensemble Honors. The competition considers entries submitted by recordings, in which the top quarter are selected as National Winners. This year 161 ensembles across the nation competed representing thirty-two states. The choral adjudicator for the project was Milton Pullen, a highly successful choral director in Texas before directing the choral program at Pepperdine University. The Clemen ts High School Choir program continues to build on a reputation of quality and success. In the Spring of 2011, Clements held the state-wide record number of All-State choir musicians (11 in total) who represented the school in the annual TMEA conference in San Antonio. The program, led by Mary Matysiak, involves 220 students this year in total.

Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. Photos courtesy of Paramount Pictures.
A
love story is both a physical and emotional tale, one that can be deeply personal and heartbreaking for an audience to experience. Director Drake Doremus’ film Like Crazy beautifully illustrates how your first real love is as thrilling and blissful as it is devastating. This film epitomizes the complexities and sharp edges of young love with this romantic tour de force. When Anna, a British foreign exchange college student (Felicity Jones) falls for Jacob, a nerdy American classmate (Anton Yelchin), they embark on a passionate and lifechanging journey only to be separated when she violates the terms of her visa. She is forced to return to Britain for a significant period of time, but the young love birds do their best to keep the flames of love stoked to the hilt. As fate would have it regard-
ing long distance relationships, a third wheel enters the picture. Sam (Jennifer Lawrence) enters as an assistant to Jacob in his company. One and one come together, and the rest is, as they say, predictable. As Forest Gump was so fond of saying, love stories are indeed like a box of chocolates. You really don’t know what you’re going to get. Like Crazy is indeed an enigma. The film is predictable, yet it is so fresh and a joy to watch. The dialogue is just incredible and the story, even though predictable, leaves the viewer yearning for more as the love demonstrated between the primary characters will just bring you to tears. The chemistry between Yelchin, Jones and Lawrence is simply palpable and is perfect! What I particularly love about this movie was the direction of Drake Doremus and his willing-
ness to allow the actors to bleed their scenes. Nothing seems to move too quickly regarding the emotion of the delivery of the dialogue. Each line is meticulously delivered and allowed to marinate with the viewer. Nothing is left to chance, and everything is clearly understood. This romantic drama is outstanding, albeit not perfect. It is warm, refreshing and will leave even the most ardent of male viewers secretly reaching for the box of tissues. Like Crazy Starring: Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones & Jennifer Lawrence Director: Drake Doremus Company: Paramount Now Showing: In Local Area Theatres MPAA Rating: PG-13 Grade: A ★

The First Lady of Philanthropy Thrills Fort Bend Women Eight local Fort Bend County women recently attended a luncheon they will not soon forget, for they dined with the First Lady of Philanthropy, Dr. Carolyn Farb. Farb is known around the globe not only for her fundraising efforts and events, but also as a successful author, businesswoman, art collector and so much more. In the past 30 years she has raised over $50 million for charities around the world, but mainly in Houston. This time, she was supporting an event which assists Fort Bend County military. “The Impact A Hero Weekend, held in Sugar Land recently, gave area residents the opportunity to support our severely wounded servicemen and women as they return home from the war. Part of the three-day event also included an auction, in which one of the items was lunch with Carolyn Farb, an item which sold out within ten minutes of being announced,” said Candace Cagle, previous auction organizer and volunteer, Impact a Hero. The winning ladies of this special auction item agree: it was a luncheon that changed their outlook in many different ways. The winners are active in the mental health challenges Fort Bend County

faces daily, which was a main topic at lunch at Willie G’s on Post Oak. Teresa Cox Reading, RN, Board of Directors, Mental Health America, Fort Bend noted, “Carolyn is a truly compassionate person. She not only talks with her words, but with her heart. She is both personable and savvy. Everyone present was involved in a synergy that was both exciting and full of passion involving Mental Health and our community/society. Carolyn’s ideas were ‘out of the box’ kind of inspirations that were both practical and creative. To have these moments with the First Lady of Philanthropy was a real treat and a wonderful memory that will resonate for years to come.”

“What an amazing group of women who are making an impact in so many ways on behalf of our wounded heroes who have come back from Afghanistan and Iraq. The war weighs so heavily on these young men and women and coming home is a tremendous adjustment. It was interesting to have a brainstorming session on the best ways to be effective with reaching out to legislators, local law enforcement in the ways they treat not just veterans, but others with mental issues, and how to raise the funds needed to make the changes. The experience was both uplifting and empowering,” Farb said. For more information, please visit www.impactahero.org.
FBJSL “Difference in a Day” Summer Project with Lunches of Love
FBJSL Members Megan Harraman and Erinn Webber participated in a “Difference in a Day” project with Lunches of Love by making lunches for local children in need.
Members of the Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) volunteered with Lunches of Love this summer as one of their “Difference in a Day” projects. By participating in this project, FBJSL members had the opportunity to make and deliver sack lunches to underprivileged children in the Rosenberg community. FBJSL’s “Difference in a Day” program was created as a means to provide FBJSL volunteers an opportunity to assist other organizations with oneday projects that help address needs in the community. Applications are currently being accepted for Spring 2012 projects. Charitable organizations interested in partnering with FBJSL through the “Difference in a Day” program should contact committee chair Erinn Webber at erinnwebber@yahoo.com. Organizations will be asked to complete a brief application for consideration by the committee. The application is also available online at www.fbjsl.com. FBJSL is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, to developing the potential of women and to improving the Fort Bend County community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable, as well as providing an atmosphere of friendliness, goodwill and camaraderie for all members. Headliners continued on page 55

The History of Red & Black and The Literacy Council of Fort Bend Continues Tina Pennington (“Red”), Brenda Bowman and Mandy Williams (“Black”).
T
he vision for the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County started with individuals sitting around a kitchen table in 1987, so it seems only appropriate that this story begin with a similar scenario. This time it was a lunch in Sugar Land’s Town Square. It was October 2009, shortly after their book, What I Learned About Life When My Husband Got Fired!, was launched that Tina Pennington (“Red”) and her sister Mandy Williams (“Black”) were introduced to Brenda Bowman, Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend by Patti Parish-Kaminski, Editor of Focus on Women and Fort Bend Focus. Amidst a great deal of laughter, there was also serious discussion about the far-reaching and long-term implications of illiteracy. It started in terms of reading, writing and speaking skills, and then soon included personal finance. At the time, there was no way to know Red & Black would be invited to develop and teach a personal financial literacy (PFL) program at KIPP Houston High School. Or, that the focus group of students who helped develop the curriculum would recommend the book be used as a textbook, referring to it as a “reality show in a book.” (Which is interesting, as Parish-Kaminski used those exact words at the initial lunch.) However, when Red & Black were honored as guest authors at the Literacy Council’s 10th Annual Book and Author Dinner in February 2010, they were thrilled to “officially” announce they were mid-way through their 12week pilot program. But that night, who could ever have imagined that their book would be approved as a PFL textbook by the Texas State Board of Education? Or, more importantly, that it would be “approved” by the KIPP Houston High School Classes of 2010 and 2011? Many of whom
fort bend
are sharing it with parents, other family members and friends, not just for the financial lessons, but also for the “Life 101” topics such as values and priorities, time management and handling stress. At that initial lunch, Red & Black listened as Brenda Bowman spoke about changing the lives of individuals, and their families and communities, through literacy programs. Since then, Red & Black have seen how empowering knowledge can be. Readers and audiences (whether in the classroom or at speaking engagements) consisting of men and women ranging from high school students to senior citizens are saying how they are “laughing and learning” while also being inspired and empowered. Red & Black is more than a book or a PFL program. It is about asking questions and getting information in order to make smart, conscious decisions. Their story demonstrates how your values and priorities should drive all your decisions – financial and otherwise. Red & Black is about taking control of your life versus having your life control you. Red & Black and the Literacy Council will continue their relationship this holiday season, with Red & Black supporting the exceptional work of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County. From now until January 31 when you purchase What I Learned About Life When My Husband Got Fired! online at www. redandblackbooks.com and designate the Literacy Council on the “Special Thanks” page at check-out, Red & Black will donate 20% of the book purchase to the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County. Or, you can visit the Literacy Council offices at 12530 Emily Court and purchase the book there. Give the gift of literacy this holiday season! H

1950s Era Sugar Land High School Gators to be Honored November 4 On Friday, November 4, at halftime of the Fort Bend Christian versus Lutheran South game at Eagle Stadium, FBC will be honoring, celebrating and remembering the great athletic feats of Sugar Land High School in the 1950s. The Gators of Sugar Land High won a total of six District 22-B titles, and five Regional championships in a seven year period (1951-57). Just down Seventh Street from Fort Bend Christian sits Old Kempner Stadium, the home of many victory celebrations by the Gators. Sugar Land High was located on the site of present-day Lakeview Elementary School, and was extremely successful in athletics throughout its history, but especially during the 1950s, until being consolidated with arch-rival Missouri City High in 1959 to form Dulles High School. Leon Anheiser (Class of ’57), Carlos Tarver, (’53), Ron Miller (‘51 and author of Halling the Ball), Eleanor Barton and the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation, and Chuck Kelly and the National Federation of State High School Associations Record Book 2011, provided recollections and enthusiastically contributed historical information about the Gators and have been instrumental in getting the word out to former players about the celebration on November 4th. Several Gators are expected to attend the November 4th celebration and the Fort Bend Christian community extends an open invitation to all who were once a part of the Gator glory to join us under the lights at Eagle Stadium on November 4.

C
lara Pardue is a record-setting senior at Fort Bend Christian Academy. Her extraordinary involvement in three varsity sports is impressive, but her academic and leadership skills are not to be overlooked. With a few months left in her high school career, Clara is looking forward to accomplishing much more than she already has before graduation. A top athlete at FBCA, Clara has been a member of the basketball, tennis, volleyball and cross-country team. As a member of the Varsity basketball team all four years, Clara was named to the Second Team All-District as a sophomore and became Captain of the team as a junior. Last year as Captain, Clara led her team to break the school record for the amount of wins in a season. This year, as Captain, Clara hopes to break the school record for the amount of three pointers made in a player’s high school career. She is only a few away, and the season hasn’t even started. However, before basketball season begins, Clara is finishing up her first season as a member of the cross-country team. Clara placed 10th at the district meet making her a member of the First Team All-District. Her best time for the two-mile run is 14 minutes and 22 seconds, which is pretty impressive for her first year on the team. In true Clara fashion, her time has earned her a place in the school record book as the seventh fastest girl to come through FBCA. “I wasn’t sure if I would like crosscountry, but I am so happy that it was a requirement for basketball girls to run cross-country this year,” said

Obtaining her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and her Doctor of Medicine from Emory University School of Medicine, Teunis chose hand and upper extremity because of the vital role that hands play in everyday life...and in quality of life. “If you think about it, the hands are the first thing connecting two people when meeting for the first time. They’re essential in every aspect of life. You don’t realize just how much until something happens to them and you’re limited in what you can do,” said Dr. Teunis. Dr. Teunis completed her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Utah and affiliated hospitals and a Fellowship in Hand Surgery at the Hand Center in San Antonio. She received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Clinical Research Project at Emory University School of Medicine and is currently working on a research project involving carpal tunnel injections and nerve conduction studies in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome. “We are pleased to be expanding our team with such talent. Dr. Teunis is such an asset to our hand and upper extremity program - and to the Fort Bend community,” said RBJC Chief Executive Officer Juliet Breeze. An avid golfer, cook, and pianist, Dr. Teunis and her husband have made their home in Sugar Land and are eager to explore all that the community has to offer. To learn more about Dr. Teunis and the RBJC scope of services, go to www.rbjc.com. Or, call (281) 344-1715. H

Local Psychiatrist Realizes Remarkable Results Bringing CuttingEdge Technology to Houston Area for Treating Depression
Another successful Prostate Cancer screening event hosted at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Cancer Center by their staff.
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Cancer Center Hosts Successful Prostate Cancer Screening Event Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Cancer Center recently hosted a very successful prostate cancer screening event with over 220 men in attendance. “We have hosted this very important event the last seven years because prostate cancer is the second leading cancer in men, behind skin cancer,” says Frances Goerlich, Director at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Cancer Center. More than 217,000 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed this year, and one in six men will be diagnosed at some point in their lives. Fortunately, when detected and treated early, prostate cancer has an excellent cure rate. The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut and is located under the bladder. The gland is found only in men. “The prostate grows as a man reaches maturity and is maintained at adult size for as long as male hormones are being produced,” said

Carl Ogletree, M.D., urologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Urologist Antoine Makhlouf, M.D., also on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, stated, “Sometimes the prostate continues to grow over time around the urethra, the tube that carries urine. This causes urinary outflow blockage, disrupting normal urinary habits. This can simply be the result of an enlarged prostate or it could be a sign of cancer. Most prostate cancer does not cause symptoms however, and can only be detected by PSA screening along with digital rectal exam.” The American Cancer Society suggests that all men over age 50 should be screened annually, and men at high risk, such as African Americans and men with a family history of prostate cancer, are encouraged to begin screenings as early as 40. As with many cancers, early detection of prostate cancer and a variety of treatment options offer the best chance of a successful outcome. A special thank you to the urologists, Lawrence Baum, M.D.; John Boon, M.D.; Antoine Makhlouf, M.D. and Carl Ogletree, M.D. and all of our volunteers, who made the event possible for the Fort Bend and surrounding communities. For over 18 months, psychiatrist Kimberly Cress, M.D. has been treating patients in the Greater Houston area with a new, cutting-edge technology for depression: Kimberly Cress, M.D. TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS is a new alternative treatment for individuals diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and Dr. Cress is one of the first psychiatrists to offer this alternative technology in the greater Houston area. With a 75% success rate with varying degrees of improvement, Dr. Cress’ patients are realizing remarkable progress with TMS. “TMS is a non-invasive protocol that utilizes a MRI-strength magnet to stimulate the nerves in the brain,” explained Dr. Cress. “The nerves then release neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine – the same chemicals provided artificially through antidepressant medications but without the risks and side effects of medications.” TMS has been FDA-approved to treat Major Depressive Disorder since 2008; however, the technology has not been widely available to the public until recently. TMS was ranked by CNN as one of the top ten health innovations in 2009, and Dr. Cress, through the TMS Serenity Center, has brought this technology to the Greater Houston area by integrating it into her eleven year psychiatry practice. In addition to treating patients with TMS for the past 18 months, Cress has completed the Harvard Medical School’s Intensive Course in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. “Based on my experience, I believe that TMS is the future for treating individuals with depression,” said Dr. Cress. “Not only can it be very effective at treating the symptoms of depression, TMS gives patients an important alternative that does
not contain the traditional systemic side effects of depression treatment.” Traditionally, depression is treated with pharmaceuticals which can lead to debilitating side effects including nausea, weight gain, sweating, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and fatigue. With TMS, there are no systemic side effects. The treatment typically spans six weeks with efficient, 37-minute outpatient procedures where a gently pulsing magnet is placed on the side of the patient’s head. There is no anesthesia required, the patient is awake and alert and able to resume normal activities after treatment. “I have had patients who have struggled with depression for years who are now living productive, depression-free lives,” said Dr. Cress. “They are truly getting their lives back and are enjoying relationships that they have not experienced for years.” The TMS Serenity Center website contains a brief questionnaire to help individuals determine if TMS Therapy may be right for them. For more information about the TMS Serenity Center, Dr. Kimberly Cress or to see TMS Therapy patient testimonials, visit www.tmsserenitycenter.com or call 281.240.4322. About Kimberly Cress, M.D. With over eleven years in private practice in Psychiatry, Kimberly Cress, M.D. brings her extensive experience for difficult to treat mental illnesses to the TMS Serenity Center. A graduate from the University of Texas Health Science, San Antonio Medical School, Dr. Cress’ vast experiences includes treating patients with treatment refractory depression, anxiety disorders and bipolar disorders at the Mood Disorder Center at the Baylor College of Medicine. Now, at the TMS Serenity Center, Dr. Cress is once again at the forefront of her field bringing ground-breaking technology to her patients suffering from depression with TMS – the most innovative, non-invasive treatment for depression that the American Psychiatric Association has classified as one of the more effective treatment alternatives for depression. Dr. Cress is an advisory board member for Texana, an organization that provides behavioral healthcare and developmental disabilities services, and she is a member of Mental Health Services of America of Fort Bend County. Concussions: A Serious Heads-Up on Sport Injuries A concussion is a brain injury that can result from a bump, blow or jolt to the head. The resultant injury may present in many different ways, but most often involves a headache and some change and in ability to process information. Most commonly seen in children ages 7 to 17 who play contact sports such as football, hockey, lacrosse and wrestling; and in limited-contact or non-contact sports such as baseball, basketball, cheerleading and gymnastics, concussions are serious head injuries that must not be taken lightly. “Concussions can be especially dangerous for youths and teens who experience repeated head injuries,” says David Braunreiter, M.D., with Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas (MOST) and board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine and credentialed as an ImPACT Concussion Consultant. “Often players return to a sport before they should, thinking there is nothing significantly wrong, or that a ‘bell-ringer’ is not a serious injury. However, this is not true. The child’s brain is still growing and developing, so extra care in return to normal activities is imperative so as to prevent any long-term damage or cognitive impairment. The youth’s brain takes longer to recover from this injury than the adults, so we cannot assume that the same time frame we use for an adult is appropriate for children.” Dr. Braunreiter cautions parents to watch for the following symptoms if their child suffers a head injury: loss www.fortbend

of consciousness; confusion; blurry vision; headache (immediate and recurring); nausea and vomiting; difficulty moving around (ataxia); reaction to bright lighting; and sensitivity to sounds. “Parents may also notice that their child has difficulty concentrating on homework, speech issues, sleep disturbances at night and general malaise or no energy,” shares Dr. Braunreiter. “Symptoms lasting longer than two weeks are called post concussive syndrome and a computed tomographic (CT) scan of the brain may be required at that point.” If your child sustains a head injury, he or she should be pulled out of the game or practice and immediately sit down. “If unconscious, the child should not be moved,” says Dr. Braunreiter. “Usually an athletic trainer or physician is on-site to assist an injured child.” Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas physicians often serve as physicians on-site for most local high schools. The main treatment for a head injury is to rest until symptom free. Use of computerized cognitive testing to assess for impairment is a critical part of helping determine the severity of the injury and when it appears to be safe to return to normal activities. For emergency attention, take your child to the Emergency Department at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. To make an appointment with Dr. Braunreiter or a MOST physician for a physical, sports injury evaluation or a follow-up visit, call 281-494-MOST (6678). H

Impact a Hero November 2011
I
remember the morning of September 11th as crystal clear as if it had been just yesterday. We were staying in Conroe with my in-laws and my sleeping the night before had not gone well. I have a history of a sixth sense if you will about life, and I had been dreaming of a large storm. I was running around trying to gather, of all things, pieces of art from a museum and chaos was everywhere. I awoke to Brian yelling at me to get downstairs and see what was happening on the television, and a small, then three, Victoria Ann was intently watching as well. After a while of processing what we were actually seeing, Victoria Ann said in her small voice, “What did you do to my country?” To this day, that will always be my question and the question raised by countless others as well. Over the past ten years, I have seen and photographed many a soldier and shared with them my thanks for creating a sense of safety where as I mother, I know deep down there is none. Hope for a world that has gone awry and a fight between two sides of mankind that will never be decided or won. It is a battle that has gone on for centuries bubbling up more or less in the ages of time to wreak havoc
on those standing innocently in its wrath. The fight is not a new one. The firemen, in particular, have always been the hero on a local front as well. That day, and in the days following the bombing, we as a country lost 343 outstandingly courageous men. The fireman is a special breed of a man, and his fearlessness to save others while sacrificing himself is like our soldiers – someone to be held in high esteem. When the Sugar Land Firefighters called me last year and asked if I would dedicate my time and talents to a calendar, I, of course, said yes. All of you know about my Art and Medicine projects with the Hope and Inspiration calendars for breast cancer, The Small Miracles calendar for the Snowdrop Foundation and Texas Children’s Cancer Center where I utilize my talents to create a product that gives back to our community. The firemen were a perfect fit, and their beneficiary, Impact a Hero, could not be more fitting or deserving. Impact a Hero is an organization that provides emotional and financial support for our disabled war on terror veterans and their families. The calendar to benefit this phenomenal organization was shot at the fire field in Richmond, and ladies, it fort bend

was hot! When they turned on the gas and lit up the sets, the walls of fire nearly melted my lens and singed my wig off! Ahhh…you thought I meant “HOT!” LOL It was all of that too, I assure you. The Sugar Land firemen went through a program they devised to get their department more fit. When all of the guys started working out, they figured they should make good use of all their hard work in the gym, and so, the calendar idea was born. I got the lovely pleasure of deciding who made it in the first of many calendars, and I am pleased to present to you our first Sugar Land Firefighters calendar benefiting Impact a Hero! The calendars can be purchased for $15.00 through sugarlandfirecalendar.com, and the proceeds go to Impact a Hero. I speak of behalf of all of us who have created this special project that we appreciate your support! On November 4 from 7 to 9 pm, I will be signing calendars along with the guys at Baker Street Pub and Grill in Sugar Land Town Center. We look forward to seeing you there! Take Care of You!
