Compounding Corner Pharmacy, Inc. ®

THE ONLY PCAB-ACCREDITED COMPOUNDING PHARMACY IN FORT BEND COUNTY

To Our Practitioners and Patients, Many of you are probably aware that several people have died that received compounded preservativefree steroid intrathecal injections that tested positive for a fungal contamination from a compounding pharmacy in the New England area. In light of these tragic events, we feel it is important for our community to know that these events are not related to our practice or our compounded preparations that you may have dispensed or received. We are cognizant of the risks involved in compounding prescriptions from scratch. It is for this very reason that we differentiated our practice from others years ago by voluntarily obtaining the PCAB accreditation. The PCAB Accreditation helps ensure that your compounding pharmacy is using the highest quality ingredients, has proven potency testing, has a proven safety record and has met or exceeded the highest pharmacy standards in the nation as set and endorsed by the leading pharmacy organizations in the country including The United States Pharmacopeia, The American Pharmacists Association, The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, The American College of Apothecaries, The National Community Pharmacists Association and The International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. In addition, PCAB is also endorsed by both the American Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. We were one of first accredited compounding pharmacies in the nation back in 2008 and have already gone through our re-accreditation in 2011. You can learn more about the PCAB accreditation by visiting their website at: www.pcab.org. Logically, there is considerable interest in our steroid injections, specifically our dexamethasone acetate sulfite free injection. The difference here is that our steroid formulation is preserved and is for injection into the muscle or joint. The people affected by the other pharmacy's injection received a preservative-free steroid that does not inhibit bacterial or fungal growth and was injected intrathecally or directly into the spine with direct access to the brain. We regularly test our products for sterility and endotoxins. For your assurance, our testing results from Eagle Analytical Labs, a third party testing site used to verify the sterility of our products are available on request. In regards to all of our other compounded medications including bio-identical hormones, you may hear that compounded medications are not regulated and are not FDA approved. To set the record straight, no compounded medications are FDA approved. They never have been. The FDA regulates manufactured medications made by pharmaceutical companies. Compounded medications are regulated by the individual state boards of pharmacy and by USP (United States Pharmacopeia). Please feel free to contact us should you have any further questions or concerns. Shannon Maguadog, Pharm. D. Shannon Maguadog, Pharm.D. Compounding Specialist/Owner

Ask These 10 Questions To Make Sure Your Dentist Stacks Up 1

Does your dentist still use a drill?

Laser technology allows us to offer pain free, no shot fillings. Why do it the old fashioned way? No high pitched whine or vibration from the grinding of the drill. Kids never become afraid of the dentist.

Does your dentist have an intra-oral camera

6 that not only takes a picture of your tooth but also lights up decay?

You read that correctly! An intra-oral camera so small it fits inside your mouth and not only takes a picture of your tooth, but also lights up decay in RED. Now we can show you your tooth on a 20” TV, magnified 50 times, and shine a specialized light to find decay on the biting surfaces and in between 2 teeth. Truly Amazing!

Does your dentist check for

2 cavities with a precise laser?

With a painless laser, we can detect cavities earlier than the eye can see them. The laser scanner can detect new cavities years before any other means of cavity detection.

Does your dentist have massage chairs

7 and satellite TV?

Your comfort is our #1 goal. Relaxing in a warm massage chair while watching a movie or your choice of 119 channels, is the best way we can think of for our patients to enjoy themselves while we do all the work!

Does your dentist recommend

3 extractions for crowded teeth? Give your child a full smile for life. No Extractions-Orthodontics with convenient, no hassle after school appointments as late as 6:30 p.m.

Does your dentist offer 12 months

8 no interest?

We work with our patients to provide easy payment options with no interest. This frees you from using those high interest credit cards.

Does your dentist offer before

4 & after work appointments?

Before & After work appointments that fit into your jam-packed schedule. Appointments start as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 6:30 p.m., and of course, appointments on Saturday.

5

9

Does your dentist have an internet cafe?

Check your email and surf the net on brand new iMac computers while you enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee.

Does your dentist have digital x-rays? Instant images the size of a computer monitor. Remember those old x-rays that were 1” x 2“ ? Imagine the difference looking at a clear image 16” x 16” with all the software abilities that go along with computers. We can magnify a suspicious area and basically see inside the tooth. An added benefit for you is 1/10 the radiation needed.

Tim Cashion, DDS

Teresa Cody, DDS

Does your dentist have a movie theater?

10 No Kidding!

What could be more fun than waiting in a comfy armchair watching movies? If you don’t feel like checking your email at the internet cafe, come into the theater and recline and relax. This is not like the dentist when you were a kid!

Your Fort Bend Office

A new home is an exciting prospect, even for Realtors. And we at Martha Turner Properties are very excited about our new home, our sixth, just 20 minutes south of Houston in dynamic Sugar Land. The new Martha Turner Properties office at 4690 Sweetwater Blvd. is perfectly located to serve our Sugar Land clients and Realtors alike. In just a few short years, Sugar Land has evolved from a small town farm and ranch in Houston’s shadow to a thriving suburban city with a well-defined identity. One of the fastest-growing areas in the United States, Sugar Land and Fort Bend County are also one of the most desirable places to live. Sugar Land is home to the headquarters of Imperial Sugar and the company’s main sugar refinery and distribution center was once located in this city. Recognizing this heritage, the Imperial Sugar crown logo can be seen in the city seal and logo. The city also holds the headquarters for Western Airways and a major manufacturing facility for Nalco Chemical Company. In addition, Sugar Land has a large number of international energy, software, engineering, and product firms.

FM 359

Martha Turner Properties has a long history of representing sellers and buyers throughout Sugar Land neighborhoods. “My heart just pounds every time I pull up to our new office,” said Martha Turner, President of Martha Turner Properties. “I’ve waited so long for just the right location and it’s so exciting for us to be able to increase our level of service for everyone in the Sugar Land area.”

Lasagna House - Town Square 16089 City Walk Sugar Land, TX 77479 • 281.277.3400

Family, Food, Tradition:

L

asagna House is a family-owned, traditional Italian restaurant that has been serving Houston for more than 30 years, but in September of 2012, the restaurant made its debut in Sugar Land. Restaurateurs and owners Jeff and Alan Smith were looking to expand their restaurant and scouted possible locations in the Woodlands but just couldn’t find anything they liked. An amazing space became available in Sugar Land Town Square, and the brothers loved the diverse and varied market that Sugar Land offers. And so, they expanded their family friendly restaurants to a new market and have been at home – in Sugar Land – ever since. Jeff and Alan sensed a family-feel to the area, and they expected the market to be similar to Katy. But, with a booming night life in Town Square, they soon discovered that their Sugar Land location has a later crowd. People come out a little later and stay out so the pair made a few adjustments to accommodate their patrons. With live music on the weekends and a beautiful patio, the restaurant stays open later in the evening, and the guests have responded positively to the changes.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION Lasagna House has been around for 30 years, but where did it start, and who is behind it all? Jeff and Alan Smith are brothers who started working in the restaurant business at a young age. They put themselves through college waiting tables. Jeff really enjoyed waiting tables and still enjoys the fast pace of the work day and the customer service aspect of the business. Alan says he soon found that he really loved the business. “The quick pace and guest interaction suited my personality, and I enjoyed all aspects of the customer service business that I was learning. I learned to tend bar soon after and really enjoyed the new challenge and the great variety of people who I could interact with daily.” Jeff met his wife in Austin. According to Alan, the story goes that Susan was working at Pearl’s Oyster Bar in 1986 as a hostess, and Alan was a waiter. Pearl’s had a big Christmas party, and Alan brought Jeff. Jeff and Susan’s first date was a couple of nights later, and they have been together since then. Alan jokes that Jeff owes him a debt of gratitude, yet he believes it truly was fate. The three moved on from Pearl’s and worked other restaurant jobs in Austin until they graduated. Jeff graduated from Texas State with an accounting degree and moved to Houston in 1989. He worked for the State Comptroller’s Office as an www.fortbend

auditor for several years and for a couple of accounting firms before starting his own tax consulting business. Alan came to Houston to attend University of Houston in 1990 where he earned his BA in communications and Spanish. Alan and Jeff had discussed the idea of opening their own restaurant, and in 1995, they met Peter Pizzo who wanted to ease into retirement after 50 years of his own family restaurant business in Chicago and Houston. In 1995, the brothers bought the Lasagna House on FM 1960. That same year, Alan married Emma Barria, now his wife of 17 years. Alan managed the Lasagna House during the week, and Jeff helped on weekends to give him some time off. They did that for years until they had grown the business to a point that they could hire additional managers and staff. Fast forward another four to five years, and the brothers purchased the original Hasta la Pasta. By 2000, Jeff quit his “day job” and devoted his time to business development. After they bought the second restaurant, Jeff’s wife, Susan, quit her job to take care of marketing

have our cumulative families at stake financially. We feel that way about the families of all of our employees as well.” Jeff, Alan and Susan enjoy being able to see what they can accomplish as a family and a business and find it very rewarding. The downside of working 24/7 is that they have wonderful friends that they don’t see much of because they work evenings and weekends when others want to get together.

Susan worked in the oil and gas field for a few years and really loved it, but with three kids and the purchase of the second restaurant, she knew something had to change. The catering business had grown to the point that they decided to create a separate company for Susan called Two Forks. Kipp Galleymore is the other principal in the Smith’s restaurant empire, and he plays an important role in the success of the business. Galleymore works with all three Smiths on operations, food and wine and is key to the quality of their product. “The hours were very long in the beginning years, and as we built a team of managers and staff members, we strove to continually stress the importance of the guest experience

The family business permeates every aspect of the Smith’s lives. The restaurant industry is tough, requiring 24/7 attention from the restaurateurs. Jeff said “The people in my family are with me at the office every day, and I feel very fortunate to be able to work with my brother and my wife,” said Jeff. “In addition over the years, two of our other brothers have worked with us, and Susan’s mom takes care of our wedding venue in Wharton, The Orchard at Caney Creek. All three of my children work with us — either as staff at one of the stores or as part-time catering staff. They are the only people on my payroll that think it is okay to roll their eyes at the boss during a shift!” Susan agrees and goes on to say, ”We could be a pretty entertaining reality show — especially on days when our kids work with us! We all respect each other, but are also prone to slip into the sibling/spouse role pretty easily. It is different than working at a non-family owned company, but in the end, every business has personality dynamics that have to be incorporated into daily life. Bringing the restaurant to Sugar Land means being a part of the community and giving back. Lasagna House’s primary focus is Fort Bend schools. They provide $300 in teacher appreciation gift certificates to every campus in FBISD, and they also provide free kid’s meal coupons to all elementary schools and reduced priced catering for teacher or volunteer appreciation luncheons. They participate in all of the activities for the community at Sugar Land Town Square, as well as provide lunch and dinner for local fundraising golf tournaments. In November, Lasagna House is helping out with the Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels volunteer dinner, providing a happy hour for ARTreach and participating in The Sugar Plum Market. The Lasagna House is about enjoying good food with people you want to spend time with. The food is traditional Italian style, hearty, like you would find in Chicago. Their lasagna is from a 100-year-old recipe; Pete Pizzo told them the recipe that belonged to his Sicilian grandmother. The ambience is traditional with red checked tablecloths and heavenly aromas from the amazing red sauce dishes, excellent Chicken Parmesan and Lasagna. The Lasagna House is a great place to take your family, enjoy the complementary salad and garlic bread and a glass of Chianti with dinner. And go ahead, have a cappuccino and Cannoli for dessert as well! Welcome to Sugar Land Lasagna House. We’re glad to have you as part of our community.

Investment Losses: A Silver Lining?

U

nderstanding the tax basis of investments and the tax rules regarding capital losses can help you reduce your income and taxes. You can do this by generating losses to offset income or gains and by generating income or gains to utilize unused losses. You usually don’t have a gain or loss for tax purposes until you sell an investment. Therefore, you have a certain amount of control over the taxation of capital gain income. Put very simply, the sale of investments and investment property generates a capital loss when the asset is sold for less than your adjusted basis in it. (Although there are exceptions, adjusted basis generally refers to your cost, plus or minus certain adjustments.) Let’s assume Hal purchases 10 shares of ABC stock in year one for $10,000. By year five, the fair market value of the stock has dropped to $8,000. Because Hal needs cash,

he sells the stock in year five for $8,000. He has a capital loss of $2,000 ($8,000 sale price - $10,000 basis). With one exception, capital losses can be used only to reduce or offset capital gains tax. Capital losses must be netted against capital gains according to specific ordering rules. Excess losses can then offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year ($1,500 if you are married and file separately), assuming your taxable income is at least as much as the deduction. Losses remaining after the limit may be carried forward indefinitely to offset future income. Assume you had $5,000 in capital gains this year, but your capital losses amounted to $12,000. You could apply $5,000 in losses to offset all of your capital gains. You could also apply $3,000 against your ordinary income, thereby reducing it. The remaining $4,000 in

losses could be carried forward to next year. Planning your year-end investment decisions with an eye to taking advantage of capital losses is important. If you expect to recognize a capital gain this year, you should review your investment portfolio for possible capital losses to offset it. If you have any capital losses that can be carried forward to next year, you should review your portfolio for capital gain opportunities to make use of the capital losses. Worried you’re not making the most of your capital losses? Call us today at 713- 853-0879. Let us take a closer look at your portfolio to see if we can find the silver lining for you. Fort Bend Family Promise Golf Tournament Fort Bend Family Promise will hold its 8th annual charity golf tournament at Sugar Creek Country Club on Monday, November 19th. Registration is $150 per person; the practice range opens at 11 am. The scramble format-shotgun start for the four-player teams begins at 12:15 pm; dinner and awards follow the conclusion of play. Again this year, golfers will have the opportunity to win a new vehicle valued at more than $40,000. The Hole-In-One, or Car-In-One, contest is once more sponsored by David Taylor.

Sponsorships, ranging from Platinum at $10,000 to Hole Sponsor at $300 are expected to sell out. Individual registration information, as well as sponsor details, are available at www.fortbendpromise. org or call Tournament Chair Duane McCullough at 281.639.2100 or e-mail him at vistaduane@aol.com. Fort Bend Family Promise was recently awarded a challenge grant from the George Ranch Foundation to purchase property to build a much-needed new Family Service Center. “As part of our financial plan, we have set a goal to double

the proceeds from last year’s golf outing,” said McCullough. “It’s going to take a lot of work, but with the community’s help, we are optimistic we can reach our target and secure the grant!” Founded in New Jersey in 1986, Family Promise programs are now found in most states across the country, with more than 100,000 volunteers contributing their gifts of time and talent. The mission of Fort Bend Promise, a 501 (c) (3) organization, is to meet immediate needs of homeless families with children, while empowering them to attain self-sufficiency. Families with children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in Fort Bend County. Studies show that children in unstable housing are four times as sick, twice as likely to go hungry, and two times more probable to have a learning disability than children living in stable housing. Fort Bend Promise’s program unites communities of faith in a collaborative effort to assist these homeless families. Eight to 13 host congregations provide accommodations and meals for three to five families (up to 14 people) for one week each two to three months on a rotating schedule. Individuals can donate by sending a check to Fort Bend Family Promise, 1424 FM 1092, Missouri City, Texas, 77459. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the Internal Revenue Service. Eat This. . .

Instead of

A

re your holiday plans in shape? Every year, the holidays seem to creep up and catch us off guard. Often this leaves many of us little time to evaluate just how healthy our holiday plans are. What does the nutritional content of your Thanksgiving recipes look like? Is there still time to exercise? Do you have too many parties on the calendar? Well, November is here, and it is time to give those plans a workout. Even minor changes can add up to improved health. Finding time to exercise, analyzing holiday recipes and practicing portion control are three effective ways to make sure Tom the Turkey doesn’t stay around longer than Thanksgiving. To incorporate physical exercise, you must make it a priority and schedule into your day. Now this doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym for an hour a day; it can be as simple as playing ball with the kids for 30 minutes or going for a family walk after dinner. The key is to find a time and setting that works for you. Walking the mall, fitness DVD’s, jogging with a friend or a fitness app such as Nike Training Club are all great ways to keep you moving.

This

Eating smaller portions are one of the easiest ways to cut back on your caloric intake while still eating the foods you love. Here are some alternatives to consider.

TRY THIS

NOT THAT

Be portion aware and satisfied. Serve meals and snacks on a smaller plate.

No large plates, filling up with oversized portions.

Make a plate and sit down. Commit to your snack and enjoy.

Mindless eating, especially at holiday parties, leaves you feeling stuffed and calorie maxed.

In a restaurant, ask for the bread or chips to come out with the meal.

Indulging on the bread or chips, consuming your recommended daily calories before the meal even arrives.

Ask your server to plate half your meal and box the remaining in a go bag.

Just because everything is bigger in Texas doesn’t mean your meal has to be. Avoid the temptation of eating larger than normal portions when you’re out to eat.

Before your Thanksgiving plans are set and you head out to the grocery store, take a minute to look at your recipe and shopping list. Consider trying alternative ingredients such as whipped butter, fat free, low sodium chicken broth and doubling the amount of fresh vegetables and herbs to increase the nutritional content and reduce the fat per serving in your traditional recipe. Researching new and healthy recipes is easy to do on the internet – eatingwell.com, foodnetwork.com and allrecipes.com are great sources to update your holiday. Happy Thanksgiving and keep fit! fort bend

Holiday Etiquette T

he holiday season is time for meeting and greeting, as well as for brushing up on one’s social etiquette to avoid the occasional faux pas, particularly if the gathering is a formal one or an office party. If you will be hosting an event this holiday season, remember that people get booked very fast during the holidays, so send a “save the date” as early as possible. One of the basic rules of party etiquette is to “RSVP,” which means “RÉPONDEZ S’IL VOUS PLAÎT,” or “please respond.” Accurate guest counts affect all of the details of a party. Always let your host know if you will be attending or send your regrets in a timely manner. Choosing your attire for holiday parties might be one of the hardest steps in preparation. Invitations will generally clue you in on the proper attire. If the event is especially important, do not hesitate to ask the host about the dress code. It is much better to be slightly overdressed than to show up to a formal affair in your jeans and t-shirt. When in doubt, go with a little black dress or something semiformal and neutral. A common problem with workplace holiday parties is that they juxtapose two opposing mindsets: “work” and “party.” My advice: When balancing the two at an event, put “work” first and dress professionally. Don’t undo years of professional behavior with a silly or overtly sexy outfit. It is appropriate to bring a gift for your host, unless it is a work soiree or large charity event, but it doesn’t have to be expensive or big. A bottle of wine, a box of chocolates or flowers are safe gift options. If you decide to take flowers, present them in a vase so the host doesn’t have to look for one. For formal gatherings, the rule of thumb is to arrive within 10 to 15 minutes of the time noted on the invitation; never arrive early or too late. Etiquette dictates that the person arriving should greet all those who are already there, especially the hosts. When half of the guests have left, it is time for you to leave also. On your way out, make sure to say goodbye to your hosts, and don’t forget to thank them. Nothing replaces the thoughtfulness and personal touch of a handwritten “thank you” note sent after the event. For etiquette workshops, contact Neyita at 713 460 6548, contact@nbetiquette.com or visit www. nbetiquette.com.

Thanksgiving By Sophia Vassiliou

W

Tablescapes

ith Thanksgiving upon us, it’s time for preparation and decorating. This can be as elaborate or as simple as you choose! Enjoy some helpful tips for the holiday table to help you make the most of your Thanksgiving.

Sophia’s Table Tips Tablecloth or Runner A Statement Piece. A stunning tablecloth can be simple. Try luscious velvet in a rich color. Measure your table and add 18” to each side. Cut fabric to size leaving edges raw. And as a bonus, most cotton velvet can be laundered for an easy clean up! A Runner. Hunt throughout your fabric store for remnants of brilliant fall colors, patterns, paisleys or plaids. Cut fabric about a foot wide and a length suitable center of your table, or for fun, try some as placemats.

Place Settings Chargers. Use simple gold or silver charger plates for a “luxe” setting. Metallic trimmed china, flatware or stemware adds a significant sparkle. Simple. White or colored dishes work well. Place folded, contrasting napkins on top of each dish. Mix it up. Try mixing patterns of dishes, glassware, linens and flatware for interest.

Centerpieces Cornucopia Undone. Scatter fall vegetables, and place pillar candles of different heights throughout the horizontal display. Add berries or other accents for contrast. Nature’s Treasures. Branches, twigs and pinecones are wonderful textures to use with small pumpkins, gourds and candles for a casual arrangement. Create a More Formal Look. Flank a centerpiece with two like objects, or use three of same object.

Napkins – Place Cards Napkins. Simply fold, roll or shape like napkins, or use a variety of textured, colored or patterned ones for interest. Wrap It Up. Wrap napkins with simple twine or ribbons you may have. Then, add berries, twigs or autumn colored leaves and voila! Stamp of Approval. Use an old mouse pad to cut a simple leave shape. Paint colors on the textured side, and stamp napkins on corners. Place Cards. Use a sharpie pen to add each name or initial to a found leaf. For a Touch of Whimsy. Cut shapes from brown paper bags, colored paper or card stock for each place setting. Children can color, decorate and label these place cards too! Each guest will enjoy their unique place setting as we give thanks on this special day. For more information, contact Sophia at 281-685-1429 or visit www.sophiadesigns.com.

First, it seems a bit tedious and makes the film seem long and slow at times. Second, the genre jumping allows the viewer to take in the wonderful scenery and effects that were created for the picture. Personally, I enjoyed the film immensely, but can see how many folks will struggle with its presentation. Many moviegoers, myself included, have often spewed vitriol at the notion that Hollywood only recycles and reissues the same stories and material over and over again. Cloud Atlas really doesn't do that. Granted, the film was created by those responsible for Halle Berry as Luisa Rey, Keith David as Napier and Brody Lee as Javier Gomez.

the Matrix trilogy - and there are some Matrix-like elements in the film, but what Cloud Atlas does is provide the viewer with something altogether new and a fresh perspective. When it comes to this film, it's important to note that it is not perfect. Cloud Atlas sets out with a goal to achieve certain things and it does just that. Within the vast majority of the film, Cloud Atlas makes you think about you, your life and loved ones and how happy you should be to have what you have. You never know what could happen. The grass isn't always greener on the other side and, quite frankly, who really ever wants to find out?

Tips to Get You Started on Getting Healthy Today! By Ryan Kobermann, CSCS

I

f you want this to be your springboard, a big start, or maybe a new beginning to a fulfilling and healthy time in your life, then follow these tips. If you follow these, work as hard as you can and have a positive mental attitude, you’ll change. I promise!

1) Eat Often Throughout the Day For the first three weeks, do not skip one of your meals. Make a decision now that you will not skip. I find it is easiest to use shakes because it is easy and convenient. I recommend Muscle Milk brands, but pick a snack that is simple for you to prepare.

2) Try Eating Salmon and a Salad Until you Can’t (Within reason, of course) This was a strategy from Dr. Perricone of Cosmetology fame. He promotes these foods because of the benefits Omega-3 fats can do for your skin and hair. But watch what it can do for your energy and weight as well. Try eating it for dinner or lunch, not both. And, certainly do not have it for breakfast; just for one meal a day. For lunch, go to a restaurant and order their lunch portion and a double serving of broccoli. You can substitute veggies for a salad if you wish. If you select a salad, make sure that you use no more than 1.5 tablespoon of olive oil and vinegar. For dinner, grill some salmon, and make a healthy salad with olive oil and vinegar. You’ll more than likely do this for four to five days and get sick of it. That’s fine. Switch to something else, but this plan gives you a great kick start.

3) A Non-Focused Athlete is the Last Athlete I have worked with every sort of person of every race, gender, age and ability. In a group, no matter how elite, there is always a fort bend

percentage of athletes who aren’t focused. And ironically, they are the ones who rarely improve, stand out or win. Focus on your workouts every day. Not every workout will be great or strong, but you still need to focus no matter how you feel. You will see individuals with different abilities during your workouts, but that has nothing to do with how you can individually focus to get the most out of your workout each day. Don’t cheat yourself! You only have a certain amount of time each day to make a great, big leap. Make the most of it!

4) Get Enough Sleep I know, we all have to get up early, and getting to bed on time can be a challenge, but do your absolute best. Research is pouring out as I write this on the power, benefits and necessity of sleep for health and weight loss. If you are consistently going on four to five hours of sleep, weight loss just isn’t going to happen. Chris Mohr, PhD, industry consultant, media spokesperson and author, said this regarding sleep and obesity: “There is definitely some cool new data with sleep and obesity. Connection is not quite there as to why it happens, but it’s very interesting and adds one more piece to this obesity puzzle.”

“Raising the Barre” 5) Eat More I promise that most of you do not eat enough during your day. Shocked? Most people are when I say that. But I can’t emphasize it enough: the only way to get your metabolism humming high enough to lose weight is to: A professionally instructed and staffed performance/dance studio

• Eat the right foods • Eat them often enough (7 am, 10 am, Noon, 3 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm) • And eat plenty of them

Classical Ballet • Pointe Variations Tap • Jazz • Hip Hop

Does that go against common sense? Well, God created our bodies with something much greater than common sense. Somehow, our bodies realize when we are eating more. If we are eating the right foods at the right time, our body stores it in the correct places, allows fat to be released for fuel and powers our workouts to new levels.

6) Get a Good Pair of Shoes

7) Be Consistent There is no magic secret. There is a direct correlation between those who show up and how much they change. There was a lovely lady who worked out with us for a very short period of time. She was obsessively consistent, and she was incredibly successful over an eight week period. Want to know why? She couldn’t afford more than eight weeks, and she had to make every day count. Make a decision now, that no matter what, the next four weeks is your time to focus on you. You deserve it, and you deserve to, at least, get a good start on achieving the results you need! Good luck, work out hard and work out smart. www.fortbend

hen you dine out and order wine, do you buy your wine by the glass or by the bottle? And what about half bottles or flights? If you are up for adventure and want to try something new, ordering wine by the glass, or, better yet, a flight of several wines is the way to go. You can sample all sorts of flavors without any commitment. Depending on the restaurant or wine bar, the sommelier or bartender might customize a flight for you, so if you’re curious about a few wines, it’s always better to ask. I often like to ask for a few suggestions of wines beyond my own initial choices. By doing that, I’ve been able to enjoy new wines I might never have selected on my own. Have I loved every one? No. But, you’ve got to try all kinds so you can find out what you do like. But what if you’re pretty sure you know what you want, but you only want a glass or two? Or, at least you think you’ll only want a glass or two? Oftentimes, when you know you, or those with you, will want more than one glass of a particular wine, it is better from a price standpoint to order the wine by the bottle. Typically, a bottle of wine holds four or five glasses of wine, yet if you compare prices of the same wine by the glass or by the bottle, it’s not long before you realize a bottle would be a better buy, even if you only enjoy three glasses. In Texas, and many other states, you can close the wine bottle back up and take it with you with whatever wine is left once you’ve enjoyed the first glass or two. Because of that, purchasing wines fort bend

by the bottle at restaurants and wine bars almost always seems a better economic choice to me than buying by the glass. Plus, I get a delicious souvenir to take home and extend the evening! Does a bottle sound like too much wine, but a glass not quite enough? Consider ordering a half bottle of wine. This could be the perfect portion size without worrying about waste of money or wine. Many restaurants, when asked, will sell you a half bottle of most of the wines on their list. They’ll just decant the other half and possibly offer it as a chalkboard special that evening. So what will you order next? Glass? Flight? Half bottle or full bottle? Will you take some home to enjoy later? Whatever you order, enjoy every sip. And, send me a note to tell me all about it on the VineSleuth Facebook page. I’d love to know! Cheers!

Ets… Lash Studio, owned by Ebony Sparks, is pleased to announce her new location in Sugar Land. Ets is a creative way of expressing etcetera. It is meant to indicate an appeal to those persons who seek the extra, the extraordinary and the excellent in terms of quality. Ets…Lashes provides precisely that in servicing eyelash extension clients. Sparks is a licensed cosmetologist and Eyelash Extension specialist with over 12 years experience. After initially gaining knowledge and experiential eduEbony Sparks cation in the beauty business by working in a variety of professional salons and spas, Sparks endeavored to indulge her own entrepreneurial spirit and start Ets…Lash Studio. Originally, ETS began in one room of a spa, but clientele demands quickly required Sparks to acquire a larger facility. Combining her formal education, a BA from University of Houston, and her specialized training from Xtreme, a premier eyelash extension manufacturer, Sparks opened her first location in January 2012 in the Galleria/Central Houston area. Because her first location has so quickly flourished, Sparks decided to expand to Sugar Land at 1945 Lakeside Plaza Drive, Suite 112. She believes that Sugar Land is the ideal location for those seeking that extra, extraordinary and excellent service experience. Ets…Lash Studio seeks not only to extend your lashes, but also invites you to come and enjoy a relaxing environment as your inner and outer beauty are being thoroughly enhanced. Ets…Lash Studio understands that the way a woman looks on the outside affects her inner beauty and confidence. The Board of Directors of the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation extends a warm holiday greeting to the community with an invitation to a wine and cheese reception on Thursday, November 29th, from 5:30-7:30 pm, at 198 Kempner Street, the temporary office and museum for the foundation, adjacent to the historic Imperial Sugar refinery. SLHF Board President Dennis Parmer says, “We are so pleased to welcome the community to our temporary museum site on November 29th. This reception is a perfect opportunity for the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation to introduce our new members of staff, share some of our recent, exciting developments and to unveil our 2012 Christmas ornament.” Last year, the SLHF created the first of a series of commemorative Christmas ornaments, each depicting an historic Sugar Land building or site. The 2011 ornament featured the image of the landmark Imperial Sugar refinery. This year’s ornament portrays the Sugar Land Auditorium, the oldest public building still standing, built in 1918. The cost of each limited edition collectable ornament is just $25 and the proceeds benefit the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation. The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation exists to research, collect, preserve and communicate the history, culture, and values of the Sugar Land community to help guide the community for the future. To RSVP to attend the reception or for information about the foundation, please visit www.slheritage.org or call 281-494-0261.

High School HOT SHOT

Eryn White: Noteworthy Student and Musician

E

ryn White is a senior at Terry High School. From playing in the marching band and singing in the school choir to creating beautiful works of art, Eryn is a talented young adult. In addition to being involved with extra-curricular activities, Eryn is also an exemplary student. Currently the Valedictorian of her senior class, Eryn takes Advanced Placement classes and is an honor student. “English is my best class,” said Eryn. “I enjoy delving into pieces of literature and dissecting an author’s piece of work.” Eryn obviously loves learning and is grateful for her teachers who have all been unique and informative in their own ways. One of her favorite teachers has been Mr. Taylor, Terry’s band instructor. “Mr. Taylor is a nice person who pushes us to do our best,” said Eryn. “I believe that he has taken the band ‘up a notch’ and made us better that we thought we could be.” Eryn has been in band since seventh grade and has been a member of the marching band all four years of high school. She plays the trumpet and is the section leader of the trumpets this year. Her favorite marching show has been this year’s show. She likes how all parts of the show work together to create a beautiful melody. Overall, her favorite piece of music to play is With Heart and Voice. Eryn is looking forward to hopefully performing this piece at the spring UIL concert. At previous contests, Eryn has made One’s, the best score, on her solos. Due to Eryn’s love of music, she decided to join the choir this year. “I have always liked to sing but did not

Eryn have any vocal training,” said Eryn. “So, for my senior year, I decided that I might as well try something new.” Through choir, Eryn has learned how to appreciate her own voice and not compare it to others. Choir requires more intense listening to be able to match the notes in comparison to band. Also, some of scales are different in choir than in band. Before Eryn joined choir, she took art as an elective class. Eryn is a talented artist who uses colored pencils to create her masterpieces. In addition, Eryn enjoys making pottery. For the past two years, Eryn has attended VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event). She has made it past the first round with her entry pieces. Eryn has also entered her work in the Rodeo School Art Program for two years. One of her pieces features a young girl balancing on a fence looking at horses. It is aptly named “Balance.” Her other work, named “Serene Stance,” features a horse on a beautiful bed of grass. Both of her pieces have earned

red ribbons. In art class, Eryn has also helped with the homecoming decorations, school musical props and the junior and senior prom decorations. Eryn is a member of the National Honor Society. Her favorite project has been helping with Special Olympics. “Special Olympics makes me happy because it is fun to watch people succeed,” said Eryn. “Everyone works together as a team and supports one another.” Eryn volunteers as a buddy and plays with the Terry band for the Opening Ceremony at the Special Olympics. On the weekends, Eryn volunteers at her church babysitting young kids and teaching Sunday School. She enjoys teaching the young children about Noah’s Ark because the children enjoy hearing about all of the animals. From being a Sunday School teacher, Eryn has learned to appreciate the little things in life and the joy that children bring to the world. After college, Eryn would like to become a high school teacher. She would like to teach English or Science. Through her experience as a Sunday School teacher, Eryn has learned that she enjoys helping others learn and solve problems. However, Eryn is interested in teaching high school because she wants to help mature youth express their individual thoughts and opinions. For college, she would like to attend Houston Baptist University, University of Houston or another Texas college. With her intellect, caring heart, drive and desire to be the best that she can be, we are excited to see what the future holds for Eryn. We wish her luck for her senior year!

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Launches Online Directory of Fort Bend Support Groups and Service Organizations Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is launching a new community resource directory designed to provide residents of Fort Bend and surrounding areas with information about support groups, charitable organizations and other providers of important health and human services. Department. Associate Staff Chaplain Nancy Penney led the project, meeting with area clergy and non-profit representatives to collect information on relevant services and develop the directory. Penney said the resource list will provide a number of long-term benefits to the community, including: • Affirming the pastoral care already being offered by area churches, temples, synagogues and community organizations. • Providing a “one-stop shop” for area residents to find the information and help they need. • Allowing area groups to reach out to new participants who are in need of support or assistance. “People often turn to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for information or assistance because they know us and trust us,” said Bill Bross, Director of Spiritual Care and Values Integration. “And while the hospital provides a number of support services related to grief and dealing with illness, we recognize there are also tremendous resources available throughout the community. Caring for the spirit is central to health and healing, and this is one way we can extend our department’s efforts beyond the hospital walls.” “Area clergy and representatives of charitable organizations were eager to be listed in the new directory,” Penney said. “For churches, it can be difficult to reach those outside of their own congregations, and many community groups have limited funds to increase awareness about the services they offer.” “Everyone I spoke with was grateful to be included because they realize the directory offers an opportunity to be more visible and reach more individuals and families,” Penney said. “They are glad to partner with Methodist Sugar Land Hospital because they see the directory as a valuable tool that can bring the community closer together. It’s a unique use of technology to help groups connect with those in need.” To add an organization or group to the directory, contact Associate Staff Chaplain Nancy Penney at NePenney@tmhs.org.

Ben Renfrow, Clinical Residency Faculty; Toko Nguyen, Supervisor, MSLH Clinical Residency Programs; Marie Potter, Coordinator, MSLH Sports Physical Therapy Residency; Lindsay Koller, Clinical Residency Faculty and Brian Duncan, Coordinator, MSLH Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s (MSLH) new orthopedic physical therapy residency program – one of just three in the state of Texas – has recently been credentialed by the American Physical Therapy Association. Led by the board-certified physical therapists at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas (MOST), the program gives new physical therapists an opportunity to advance their clinical orthopedic skills while working and studying for 12 months alongside the MOST staff. “We have the only accredited program in Texas that is not affiliated with a university or academic medical center,” said Sean Croft, Director of Rehabilitation Services. “This is a tremendous achievement, and it is a testament to the skills, knowledge and experience of our physical therapy staff at MSLH and MOST. No one else in the greater Houston area has this many skilled clinicians and this level of expertise under one roof, and our team has created an outstanding curriculum for our residents.” The new program puts Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in a select group of prestigious organizations nationwide that offer PT residency, including New York University, Massachusetts Gen-

eral Hospital, Cedars-Sinai, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Ohio State University, University of Southern California and Kaiser Permanente. In addition to helping develop the next generation of physical therapists, the residency program is designed to benefit MOST patients by adding to available staff and assisting in the sharing of ideas and best practices. “We are bringing in the best and the brightest physical therapists – individuals who have been highly trained in modern therapy techniques and who have been caring for patients already,” said Toko Nguyen, Supervisor, Clinical Residency Programs. “These are therapists who are ready to move to the next level and become advanced practitioners. Our new program will give them that opportunity while enhancing our ability to serve the community.” Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab services are located at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas (Highway 6 and Brooks St.) and at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Spine Center off Town Center Boulevard. M edical F ocus Fort Bend County Deputy Constable Successfully Undergoes New State-Of-The-Art Heart Surgery At Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Last year, 66-year-old Fort Bend County Deputy Constable, Corporal Al Dobson, started experiencing pain in the right side of his chest. At first, he was not concerned, but then the pain began traveling down to his right shoulder, elbow and finally became worse. Even though we most commonly hear that heart attacks cause pain and numbness in the left side of the body, Corporal Dobson knew to call 911. He was taken to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, where staff cardiologist Dr. B. Keith Ellis performed a coronary angiogram on him and found significant blockage in his main artery to the heart and recommended bypass surgery. “Everything happened so fast,” said Officer Dobson. “When I first heard the words heart surgery, I was in shock, but Dr. Tripathy quickly calmed my fears when he told me that he was going to do the surgery using a minimally invasive procedure that required only one small incision.”

Uttam Tripathy, M.D. and Corporal Al Dobson.

The traditional method of openheart surgery requires opening the patient’s chest wall from the front. Dr. Uttam Tripathy, cardiothoracic surgeon on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, instead used a minimally invasive approach that requires only one small incision on his side—resulting in less pain, less potential for complications and a quicker recovery. Dr. Tripathy is currently the only cardiovascular surgeon performing this advanced method of heart surgery in Fort Bend and surrounding areas. A year after his minimally invasive heart surgery, Corporal Dobson is enjoying life to the fullest with his wife of 39 years and their three children. As a member of the Criminal Justice System since 1969, Corporal Dobson is currently serving the Fort Bend community and has earned his certification as a Master Peace Officer. “I feel fortunate to have been treated by the finest medical team. The staff and nurses that cared for me at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital were excellent. I can’t believe how quick the recovery and rehabilitation process was. It has been over a year since Dr. Tripathy saved my life and I feel great!” explained Corporal Dobson. For more information or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Tripathy or another cardiothoracic surgeon in your area, please call the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s physician referral line at 281-274-7500 or visit MethodistSugarLand.com.

A Healthy Diet May Help Improve How Seniors Age Since you’ve retired, it may be tempting to indulge yourself. You’ve worked hard your whole life, so why not have a second piece of pie or that yummy cheese? Although an occasional treat isn’t harmful, there is growing evidence that seniors have a higher quality of life if their diet is rich in low-fat dairy products, fruit, whole grains, poultry, fish and vegetables. Research Says Choose Healthy Food Clusters A recent study from the University of Maryland looked at 2,582 people between the ages of 70-79, and tied their eating habits to their quality of life over a 10-year period. The participants were categorized into six dietary groups, three of which were “Healthy Foods,” “High-Fat Dairy Products” and “Sweets and Desserts.” The Healthy Foods cluster included people with a high intake of low-fat dairy products, fruit, whole grains, poultry, fish and vegetables. “Both the High-Fat Dairy Products and Sweets and Desserts clusters had 1.4-times higher risk of death than the Healthy Foods cluster,” explain the authors of the study. “The Healthy Foods cluster also had more years of healthy life.”

The Impact of Healthy choices These conclusions are not surprising, because there are important reasons to eat healthy as you age. As you age, your body’s metabolism slows down, and the physical activities may be more difficult. Also, some nutrients are more difficult for your body to absorb. Age is also a risk factor for several diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension and diabetes. However, these diseases respond to improved nutrition. If you have these diseases, a healthy diet can help reduce the harmful effects. If you don’t have these diseases, a healthy diet can help reduce your chances of getting them. Develop a Healthy Eating Plan If you think you need to revamp your eating habits, here are a few tips from the National Institute on Aging to get you started: • Eat many different colors and types of vegetables and fruits. • Make sure at least half of your grains are whole grains. • Eat only small amounts of solid fats, oils and foods high in sugars. • Limit saturated fat (found mostly in foods that come from animals) or trans fats (found in foods like margarines, shortening, cookies and crackers). Also, don’t forget your best health resource on your health – your primary care physician. Symptoms of poor nutrition in seniors might be subtle or might be mistaken for other health problems. Regular checkups and a good conversation with your doctor can go a long way to help keep you healthy and enjoying many more years of retirement. Cecilia I. Lowder, M.D. joined Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in 1999. Two Memorial Hermann Hospitals Earn Top Quality Recognition from The Joint Commission Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital were recently named among the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. The hospitals were among the top 18 percent of hospitals in the nation that were recognized for leading the way in using evidence-based care processes that are proven to be the best treatments for eight common conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke and venous thromboembolism, as well as inpatient psychiatric services. Memorial Hermann Katy was recognized for its achievement on the following measure sets: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land received recognition in pneumonia and surgical care. This is the second year in a row that Memorial Hermann Sugar Land is being acknowledged as a Top Performer, making it one of only 244 hospitals that achieved the distinction two years straight. A recognized hospital must first achieve performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that includes all the accountability measures for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, including measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, the hospital also must meet a 95 percent performance target for every accountability measure for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, excluding any measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. The specific eligibility criteria can be found at www.jointcommission.org. “When we raise the bar and provide the proper guidance and tools, hospitals have responded with excellent

results,” says Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president, The Joint Commission. “This capacity for continual improvement points toward a future in which quality and safety defects are dramatically reduced and high reliability is sought and achieved with regularity. Such day-to-day progress will slowly but surely transform today’s health care system into one that achieves unprecedented performance outcomes for the benefit of the patients.” “This achievement is indicative of the strength of teamwork and commitment to patient care. It reflects the culture of our organization – to provide safe and high-quality care to all patients,” said Scott Barbe, Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital CEO. “I am honored that Memorial Hermann Katy has been recognized by The Joint Commission as a Top Performer.” “We understand that what matters most to patients at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital is safe, effective care. That’s why our team has made a commitment to accreditation and to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land is proud to be named to the list of The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures,” said Greg Haralson, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land CEO. In addition to being included in the release of The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, both Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check Web site (www.qualitycheck.org). The Top Performer program will be featured in the November issue of The Joint Commission Perspectives and the October issue of The Joint Commission: The Source.

eight percent of our homeless population is veterans and out of those, 5 to 10 percent are women.” These heroes are living in deplorable conditions without basic living essentials. Their healthcare needs are not being met, and to make matters even worse, over half of them have mental illnesses that have been either created by serving our country or exacerbated by having served. Satavia is a nurse and in her life’s work, she became increasingly weary of what she saw. She created the foundation Planet Hope to find and assist our homeless veterans. This November 10th is Veterans Day, and the Planet Hope Foundation is hosting a Veterans Walk to honor the men and women who have served our country. The walk is at Oyster Creek Park located at 4033 Hwy 6 South in Sugar Land from 10 am to 2 pm. By participating in this walk, you can help Planet Hope end the words “homeless” and “veterans” used in the same sentence. If you can make it out with your children, it will be a fantastic way to honor and assist those in need while teaching a lesson of thankfulness and gratefulness.
