Ask These 10 Questions To Make Sure Your Dentist Stacks Up 1

Does your dentist still use a drill?

Laser technology allows us to offer pain free, no shot fillings. Why do it the old fashioned way? No high pitched whine or vibration from the grinding of the drill. Kids never become afraid of the dentist.

Does your dentist have an intra-oral camera

6 that not only takes a picture of your tooth but also lights up decay?

You read that correctly! An intra-oral camera so small it fits inside your mouth and not only takes a picture of your tooth, but also lights up decay in RED. Now we can show you your tooth on a 20” TV, magnified 50 times, and shine a specialized light to find decay on the biting surfaces and in between 2 teeth. Truly Amazing!

Does your dentist check for

2 cavities with a precise laser?

With a painless laser, we can detect cavities earlier than the eye can see them. The laser scanner can detect new cavities years before any other means of cavity detection.

Does your dentist have massage chairs

7 and satellite TV?

Your comfort is our #1 goal. Relaxing in a warm massage chair while watching a movie or your choice of 119 channels, is the best way we can think of for our patients to enjoy themselves while we do all the work!

Does your dentist recommend

3 extractions for crowded teeth? Give your child a full smile for life. No Extractions-Orthodontics with convenient, no hassle after school appointments as late as 6:30 p.m.

Does your dentist offer 12 months

8 no interest?

We work with our patients to provide easy payment options with no interest. This frees you from using those high interest credit cards.

Does your dentist offer before

4 & after work appointments?

Before & After work appointments that fit into your jam-packed schedule. Appointments start as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 6:30 p.m., and of course, appointments on Saturday.

5

9

Does your dentist have an internet cafe?

Check your email and surf the net on brand new iMac computers while you enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee.

Does your dentist have digital x-rays? Instant images the size of a computer monitor. Remember those old x-rays that were 1” x 2“ ? Imagine the difference looking at a clear image 16” x 16” with all the software abilities that go along with computers. We can magnify a suspicious area and basically see inside the tooth. An added benefit for you is 1/10 the radiation needed.

Tim Cashion, DDS

Teresa Cody, DDS

Does your dentist have a movie theater?

10 No Kidding!

What could be more fun than waiting in a comfy armchair watching movies? If you don’t feel like checking your email at the internet cafe, come into the theater and recline and relax. This is not like the dentist when you were a kid!

A new home is an exciting prospect, even for Realtors. And we at Martha Turner Properties are very excited about our new home, our sixth, just 20 minutes south of Houston in dynamic Sugar Land. The new Martha Turner Properties office at 4690 Sweetwater Blvd. is perfectly located to serve our Sugar Land clients and Realtors alike. In just a few short years, Sugar Land has evolved from a small town farm and ranch in Houston’s shadow to a thriving suburban city with a welldefined identity. One of the fastest-growing areas in the United States, Sugar Land and Fort Bend County are also one of the most desirable places to live. Sugar Land is home to the headquarters of Imperial Sugar and the company’s main sugar refinery and distribution center was once located in this city. Recognizing this heritage, the Imperial Sugar crown logo can be seen in the city seal and logo. The city also holds the headquarters for Western Airways and a major manufacturing facility for Nalco Chemical Company. In addition, Sugar Land has a large number of international energy, software, engineering, and product firms. Martha Turner Properties has a long history of representing sellers and buyers throughout Sugar Land neighborhoods. “My heart just pounds every time I pull up to our new office,” said Martha Turner, President of Martha Turner Properties. “I’ve waited so long for just the right location and it’s so exciting for us to be able to increase our level of service for everyone in the Sugar Land area.”

Jewel of Fort Bend

Sandra Billingsley

A

history buff at heart, Sandra Billingsley has watched Fort Bend County evolve through the years. Having lived in Fort Bend County for 37 years, this JEWEL has assisted many local organizations selflessly giving of her time and talents. “I love Fort Bend County because the people are so friendly and giving,” said Sandra. “I feel supported here, and I love history, especially Texas history, so what better place to live than Fort Bend County which is blessed with a rich history.” Sandra is a native Texan who was born and raised in Livingston, Texas. In high school, Sandra made up her mind that she did not like typewriters; however, during this era, most women became secretaries and used typewriters daily. Therefore, this JEWEL followed her older sister’s lead and attended nursing school in Tyler. It just so happened that Sandra met her husband, Bill, in Tyler, and she loved the nursing profession. She was named Most Outstanding Nurse in her graduating class. After marrying Bill, the couple decided to reside in Fort Bend County. They lived in Missouri City for 25 years and eventually settled in Richmond in 1999. Throughout the years, Sandra’s love of nursing never faded, and she continued working after having her two fort bend

“I feel supported here, and I love history, especially Texas History, so what better place to live than Fort Bend County which is blessed with a rich history.” children, Kelli and Buddy. Sandra volunteered to be the Room Mom for the kids and worked the later shift so that she could be around to help. While the kids were in junior high, Sandra was a member of the Band Booster Club, and she made costumes for Kelli’s twirling routines. For Buddy, Sandra appliqued flags for the Little League. After Kelli and Buddy completed school, Sandra retired after 40 years of working. She knew that she needed something to keep herself busy but wasn’t quite sure what to do. It was her daughter who encouraged her to join a Fort Bend County Fair committee. Sandra was placed on the Kick-Off Luncheon/ Style Show committee. Little did she know that she would end up serving on this committee for 11 years and chair the event for seven years. After serving on the committee for two years, Sandra was asked to chair the event the following year, because she was a dedicated volunteer who followed through with her assigned tasks. As the chair, Sandra moved the event to two different venues because the event kept growing under her leadership. Another successful organization that Sandra is currently a member of is the Fort Bend County Museum Association. In 2003, Sandra and Bill were named the Honorary Chairs of the Lone Star Stomp. “It was a wonderful honor to be named the Honorary Chairs of that event,” said Sandra. “We were new to the Richmond community at that point, and it was great to be invited to all of the functions and meet so many wonderful people.” Sandra was honored and humbled to see her picture and a nice article in the local papers. Also in 2003, Sandra became a docent for the Fort Bend County Museum. The docents are a group of women who act as tour guides for the Museum, as well as for the Moore House, and raise funds for the Museum. They staff the Moore House with volunteers for the Texan Market Days and organize the Candle Light Gala and Tour. The Candle Light Gala is the docent’s way of thanking the Museum Association and its members. Sandra has co-chaired this gala for five years. Since Sandra has been a docent, they have raised the funds necessary to install new restrooms on the grounds. The installation of the additional restrooms was a much-needed renovation and a point of pride for the docents who saw a need

and were able to fulfill it. For the majority of her volunteer work, one theme stands out: Sandra enjoys providing hospitality to her guests, friends and family members. She readily volunteers to host meetings, cook meals and organize food for the many organizations that she helps. For the docents at the Museum, Sandra is in charge of hospitality for their meetings, which means that she coordinates the food and beverages and sets up the meeting space. In addition to serving as a docent, Sandra is very involved with her church, St. Johns United Methodist Church. Sandra and her husband joined the church in 2000 and have since assisted with the Stewardship Committee, Bereavement Committee, Greeting, Communion Services and the Lunches of Love program at the church. As members of the Stewardship Committee, Sandra coordinates the food portion of the luncheon they hold every year. “I’ll reiterate that I didn’t like typewriters growing up, and I don’t like computers now,” said Sandra. “So, I enjoy coordinating the food for the luncheon every year because it doesn’t involve computers.” For the Stewardship Luncheon, Sandra usually makes a dessert or a salad. She admits that she doesn’t cook as much as she used to, but she still really enjoys it and classifies herself as an “old fashioned cook.” “I enjoy cooking chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, fried okra and butter beans,” said Sandra. “My family will eat just about anything that I put on the table.” It is a perfect fit for this JEWEL to volunteer for Lunches of Love. This program is relatively new to her church, but Sandra enjoys assisting with sandwich making, packing goldfish and sorting the lunches. Sandra noticed a need for volunteers with the program and knew it was a perfect fit for her. Some of the other organizations that Sandra works with are the Garden Club of Richmond, Women’s Club of Rosenberg and the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (LEAF). Through these organizations, Sandra has used her cooking and baking skills and assisted in raising funds. She hosts many Garden Club meetings in her home, chairs the telephone committee and has chaired the Christmas Luncheon. For the Women’s Club, Sandra also chairs the telephone committee. Sandra supports the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation at their events and has even baked www.fortbend

beautiful cakes for LEAF’s Surf’s Up event in their live dessert auction. In addition, she assisted with the Leaman family’s estate sale where the proceeds were donated to the foundation. In addition to volunteerism, Sandra’s three grandsons are the light of her life. She is very involved taking her three grandsons on trips, picking them up from school and deer hunting with them. Since they live nearby, Sandra is able to see them on a regular basis. However, the past few months have been difficult: her oldest grandson was deployed to South Korea for a year. Between volunteering projects, her grandsons keep her busy, and she could not be more proud of “her boys.” Through her service as a volunteer, Sandra’s goal is to help her family and friends by providing them with hospitality, encouragement and the resources that they need to raise funds for various programs. Helping others is what Sandra does best. Whether it is sitting with a family while a loved one is in surgery, bringing food to a family who has just lost a loved one, providing food or space for a non-profit’s meeting or organizing an event for a group that she loves, Sandra is more than a nurse by profession; she is a nurse for the soul who knows what you need before you do. So, for her old-fashioned, good ole, southern ways, desire to help others and her innate sense that knows how to help people, Fort Bend Focus Magazine is proud to honor Sandra Billingsley as a JEWEL of Fort Bend.

uccessful, driven and dedicated are three adjectives that best describe this JEWEL. She has been an incredible advocate for Fort Bend County serving the City of Sugar Land as well as non-profits in many capacities throughout Fort Bend County. After her countless hours of volunteer work in the community, it is no wonder that most people recognize this JEWEL, Jacqueline Baly Chaumette, as Fort Bend’s “resident celebrity.” The roots of Jacqueline’s success have always been her family. Jacqueline’s family moved to the United States from St. Croix US Virgin Islands when she was only seven years old. Her dad was a welder, and an American company recruited him to work in the United States. After arriving to the United States, Jacqueline’s parents decided to stay to provide better life opportunities for Jacqueline, their only child. Adjusting to life in America was hard. Jacqueline remembers as a young child being teased about her thick Caribbean accent by the kids at school. This determined young lady sat in front of a dictionary and phonetically pronounced words until her accent faded away. In school, Jacqueline often demonstrated her intelligence and talent. She graduated magna cum laude and became a classically trained flutist winning several local, regional, state and national competitions. Those achievements led to a fort bend

“The Fort Bend Boys Choir is one of Fort Bend’s treasures, and I wanted everyone to know what amazing and gifted young men we have right here in this county.” full scholarship to the University of Houston, and Jacqueline became the first member of her family to complete a college degree. However, an undergraduate degree was not enough for this feisty lady; she later earned her Masters in City Planning specializing in public policy. In 1992, shortly after finishing her Master’s Degree, Jacqueline met David on a blind date. When they met, David was attending law school in Chicago while interning for Baker Botts during the summer. Jacqueline and David hit it off instantly, but they only had two weeks together before he left to return to Chicago. “David sent me two dozen roses every week for six months, and then in the sixth month, he proposed,” said Jacqueline. “We were married in Houston on my parents’ anniversary, June 25, 1994, and soon after that, we moved to Sugar Land where David grew up.” Jacqueline began her career as a Regional Planner for the Houston-Galveston Area Council and quickly climbed the career ladder as a Vice President of the Greater Houston Partnership where she worked with many elected officials. As the youngest person, as well as the first woman of color to hold an executive position in the organization, Jacqueline, once again, distinguished herself from the status quo. After much encouragement from her husband and close friends, Jacqueline opened her own company, BalyProjects, in 1999. “I was very hesitant to do it,” said Jacqueline. “But, I thought I had the skills set necessary to be a successful entrepreneur, and it all worked out! I love the freedom and flexibility that comes with owning my own company, and when I won Fort Bend Entrepreneur of the Year, I knew that I made the right decision.” Even though Jacqueline has made her career and family a top priority, she still made volunteering an important part of her life. As a child, Jacqueline had watched her mom volunteer at church and in her community. Her mom has been a teacher with Head Start for more than thirty years. Jacqueline saw the impact that her mom had on her students and was inspired to make a positive difference in her community as well. Jacqueline’s volunteer work began at a homeless shelter serving food on Thanksgiving Day while she was in high school. Since that time, she has volunteered for other

organizations such as the Fort Bend YMCA, the Fort Bend Boys Choir and the Fort Bend Education Foundation. Jacqueline became involved with the YMCA when her son Raphael began playing baseball at the YMCA. Her stellar reputation for leading people and raising money soon became known, and Jacqueline was asked to serve as the President of the Board as well as chair their Capital Campaign to expand the facility. Jacqueline also served as the President of the Board for the Fort Bend Boys Choir, the largest boys choir in the nation, for three years. Her younger son, Alexandre, was a member of the choir. “My role as president of this organization included promoting the choir and empowering our talented young men,” said Jacqueline. “The Fort Bend Boys Choir is one of Fort Bend’s treasures, and I wanted everyone to know what amazing and gifted young men we have right here in this county.” Jacqueline is particularly proud of the opportunities the boys have had performing at Skeeters games, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and other venues local and abroad. While Jacqueline’s kids were attending Fort Settlement Middle School, Jacqueline volunteered for the Fort Bend Education Foundation Gala. Again, Jacqueline excelled in every way, and the next year, Jacqueline was asked to co-chair the gala. She would chair the gala again in 2012, while also becoming a member of the Board serving as the Vice President of Development. There are several organizations that Jacqueline has given her time and talents to including Fort Bend Seniors, Texas Casa, Chinquapin School Board of Trustees, Junior Cotillion, Parks Youth Ranch, The Junior League of Houston, Boys and Girls Harbor, Texas Dragon Boat Association, Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, Sugar Land Economic Development 4-B Corporation, Commonwealth Elementary PTA, Fort Settlement PTO and the Sugar Land Exchange Club to name a few. In May 2008, Jacqueline took her public service in a new direction when she was elected to the Sugar Land City Council with over 69% of the vote, making her the only black person, the only woman and the youngest person on Council. She ran unopposed for her 2010 re-election bid. Prior to her election, Governor Rick Perry tapped her to represent Harris, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties on water and wastewater issues on the Brazos River Authority. From her tenure on this statewide gubernatorial appointment and as a www.fortbend

City Council member, it is evident that Jacqueline loves the community, and the community loves her. Jacqueline is known for her poise and graceful demeanor and is regularly seen emceeing functions around Fort Bend County, including events for Mental Health America, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, Child Advocates and more. On any given weekend, you will find her at a philanthropic event or donating her time in other ways, but she also can be seen at her sons’ sporting events or spending time with family. People across the county have taken notice of Jacqueline’s tremendous achievements throughout her lifetime and her willingness to always help others. She has received many prestigious awards, aside from JEWELs, such as, ABC 13’s Woman of Distinction for 2011, Outstanding Young American by the Jaycees in 2009, University of Houston Black Alumnus of the Year and many more. A brief biography cannot adequately describe Jacqueline and all that she has given to the Fort Bend Community. She is an incredible woman who truly has it all: a wonderful and loving family, a successful career, a generous and caring spirit, a determined, can-do attitude and the admiration and respect of her community. Jacqueline is one-of-a-kind and truly a JEWEL in every meaning of the acronym. For everything that she has done for this community, Fort Bend Focus Magazine is proud to honor Jacqueline Baly Chaumette, as a JEWEL of Fort Bend.

HEESE! If you have been to any of Fort Bend’s special events, you have likely seen this JEWEL snapping photos of the event attendees. Over the past several years, Mary Favre has become one of Fort Bend’s popular, non-profit photographers and can be seen at many of the events in Fort Bend County, including JEWELS, taking pictures. Over the years, Mary Favre’s photography skills have made her an incredibly involved citizen “behind the camera.” However, her photography is just a small part of the “big picture” of her years of service to the community. Mary was not always interested in photography; her talent evolved as she reinvented herself throughout her life. Her story begins outside Chicago, Illinois where she was born. Her family was very transient and moved frequently. She attended several different schools from 1st to 12th grade as her father was self-employed, and the family moved wherever he could find work and be successful. Mary is one of eight children; she has six brothers and one sister. Mary was always looking for her “roots.” Consequently, Mary became very interested in putting together her family tree. She began researching her genealogy in 1988, and it became her “first love.” “I wanted to find answers to my family’s past,” said Mary. “So, I started questioning my fort bend

relatives and connecting the dots on my family tree.” Recently, much to Mary’s surprise and delight, she found that her second cousin once removed had kept genealogy records on that side of the family all the way back to the 1675. Mary was in absolute heaven searching through his materials. Genealogy has developed into a passion and hobby for Mary, and in fact, she attended a genealogy research course last year in Utah to learn more about researching her “roots.” Mary is currently working with her sister-in-law, Lisa Harrington, to create a digital scrapbook of her findings. Mary’s findings increase as her family tree grows. On Mary’s side of the family, it shows that she married Carl Favre in 1994. The couple met and later became engaged during an extremely difficult time in both of their lives. Just months before they were to be married, Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. During this same period of time, Carl was diagnosed with cancer and went through surgery and radiation. Despite their difficult cancer treatments, they did not delay wedding plans and were married in July 1994. “Being a cancer survivor continually teaches me to evaluate what is truly important in my life,” said Mary. “Relationships are very important, and we should value our life experiences without letting the bad ones hold us back. We need to keep our eyes focused forward and live in the present.” Mary and Carl are down to earth people who believe in being good Christian stewards. Their

“I know He wants me to spend part of my time serving others; I just had no idea how big of a blessing it would be.”

his JEWEL brings energy and excitement to everything that she does. From chairing events to serving on boards to helping at her children’s school, Melissa Hayslip will volunteer for anything, especially if she gets to mingle and meet new people while doing it. It doesn’t take long to realize why Melissa is a “Golden Volunteer:” she is a go-getter and will step up to help in any capacity to make a difference in her community. Melissa is a native Texan born in Beaumont. Her family moved to the Spring Branch area when she was in Kindergarten for her dad’s job. Only a few years later, the family was transferred to Louisiana and stayed there until Melissa’s junior year of high school when they were transferred back to Houston. As a junior in high school, the last thing that Melissa wanted to do was move back to Houston and leave her friends. On top of that, her family did not even move back to the Spring Branch area; they moved to Fort Bend County where Melissa attended Dulles High School. After completing her education, Melissa started a full-time job with CSR Incorporated answering phones and eventually moved up to the position of Office Manager. Melissa was with the company for 15 years before she left to stay home with her two sons, Zack and Zane. fort bend

A few years before she left her job, Melissa met husband Matt. “Matt and I met through a mutual friend,” said Melissa. “On one of our first dates, he asked if I would be interested in watching him play in this band. So, I went not knowing what to expect, but I was very smitten, and entertained by him after that date.” The two married a short time later and moved into a house in Sienna Plantation. In 1999, Sienna was much smaller than it is now. “Matt and I love so many things about Sienna,” said Melissa. “This is such a close-knit community, and it is convenient that all of the schools are within the border so our kids can bike to school.” If anything happens with the kids, Melissa knows that she will receive two or three phone calls from concerned parents. Sienna has the “it takes a village” mentality in regards to raising kids. Everyone knows everyone on the street. Melissa has received emotional support and guidance from her neighbors that motivates her to be the best that she can be as both a mother and as a volunteer. Once Matt and Melissa moved to Sienna, Melissa decided that her job would be to take care of the boys and volunteer for the community. In 2003, Melissa joined the Fort Bend Junior Service League to give back to the community and also to have some “adult time.” Melissa has served in numerous capacities for the League over the years. She has been on the Board of Directors serving as president elect, president and past president. As a board member, Melissa had the opportunity to assist with some of the League’s special events, such as Charity Ball and Glitter and Gloss. As President Elect, Melissa was the Board Liaison for Charity Ball. Charity Ball is Melissa’s favorite event that the League coordinates. Melissa describes the event as a “big girl prom” that raises money for a good cause. In addition to Charity Ball, Melissa served as the Board Liaison for the Glitter and Gloss event. This event was similar to Girlfriends Giggle, but it was for little girls. Melissa enjoyed her time on the Board because it allowed her to work on these events. Prior to joining the Board, Melissa volunteered with the Fort Bend County Women’s Center for many years. She coordinated the shelter’s parties for the kids. Each year, the center hosted a Valentine’s, Easter and Christmas party. At

the parties, children made cards for their moms, participated in an Easter egg hunt, selected and wrapped presents for their mom, decorated cookies and more. Every time that Melissa went to the shelter and was with the kids, her heart was filled with joy. She was always sad to go because the kids were so loving, and she knew that they were going through a tough time. It was very worthwhile for Melissa to see the positive impact that these parties and celebrations had on the kids. Since Melissa was so heavily involved with the Women’s Center, she was invited to join STARS, the Fort Bend Women’s Center Auxiliary Group. She served two years on the board of this organization that helped to fulfill the needs of the shelter. The STARS are in charge of the Girlfriends Giggle event, so it wasn’t long after her involvement with STARS that she was asked to chair this event for its second year. “I knew that it was a big undertaking to chair an event,” said Melissa. “But, I have a very supportive husband who was on board and helped with the kids, and it was an extremely rewarding experience to chair this event.” The League keeps Melissa very busy, but she has a feeling of great accomplishment after completing her many roles. Today, Melissa serves on the Sugar Plum Market Bar committee. She enjoys this position because it gives her a

chance to socialize with everyone at the market. Melissa views the ladies in the League as her co-workers who are all working toward the same goal of giving back to the community through monetary gifts as well as through donations of their time and talents. “I feel very blessed by God to be able to enjoy the true friendships that He’s brought into my life through my membership in the League,” said Melissa. “I know He wants me to spend part of my time serving others; I just had no idea how big of a blessing it would be.” Melissa’s involvement in the League led her to another organization: The American Cancer Society. KK West, another League past president and JEWEL, asked for Melissa’s help on this new event in Fort Bend County, Couture for the Cause. For the last three years, Melissa has committed to this event serving in many roles. Melissa enjoys getting to meet cancer survivors at this event who are strong and humble after fighting this deadly disease. Plus, all of the money raised stays in Fort Bend County to assist the patients living in our community. “I’ve been told that Fort Bend is a non-profit mecca,” said Melissa. “I think that this is a great thing, because it means that we live in a community that is willing to give back and support all of these non-profits.” Melissa is willing to give back in many ways, especially through her church, Harvest United Methodist Church. Melissa assists with the youth programs including Vacation Bible School and as a small group leader for middle school girls. At the boys’ school, Melissa is also a regular volunteer. She served as a room mom and on the PTO board. Between volunteering responsibilities, Melissa enjoys exercising. As with volunteering, she looks at exercising as part of her job and loves being able to see the results from her hard work. Melissa is truly a joyful person who makes others happy. A self-proclaimed loud, energetic and organized person, this JEWEL utilizes her talents well through her volunteering positions. It is no wonder that all of the events that she assists with turn to gold; she is a “Golden Volunteer.” For her dynamic personality, genuine excitement to help others and her “never met a stranger” outlook on life, Fort Bend Focus Magazine is proud to honor Melissa Hayslip as a JEWEL of Fort Bend.

“I am so grateful that I have been able to share this experience with the people that I love and care about the most.”

his JEWEL has a passion for serving God through her service to others. Kathy Villarreal Huebner is a long-time resident of Fort Bend County, and her work in this community and abroad has had a substantial impact on many. Her life has been anything but ordinary, and it is her actions and spirited heart that have made it truly extraordinary. Kathy was fortunate to have a childhood unlike most children. Kathy was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, but her father was in the military, and not long after her birth, her family moved to the Panama Canal Zone. Kathy’s father was an Airborne Ranger who underwent special training in the Canal Zone at that time. She grew up in a bilingual household, speaking both Spanish and English. In first grade, Kathy’s family moved back to the United States when her father was sent to Vietnam. After completing three tours, the family returned to Panama where her father was assigned to the U.S. Army School of the Americas. Kathy attended middle school and high school in Panama. Since Kathy was the oldest of her five siblings (a sixth arrived later), when Kathy left for the University of Texas, her family followed her. “I loved growing up in Panama,” said Kathy. “Even though I attended college in Austin, I never thought that I would stay in the United States because Panama felt fort bend

like home. It was my paradise.” As luck would have it, for Fort Bend County at least, Kathy never returned to Panama. She met her husband, Dr. Gene Huebner, through her occupation as a registered nurse, and they made their home together in Fort Bend County. Once Kathy and Gene’s youngest child was in Mother’s Day Out, Kathy felt led to use her time to volunteer in the community. This JEWEL began volunteering with the American Cancer Society in 1993. She chaired the auction for the annual Holiday Ball and then co-chaired the gala the following year. For several years, she put together and mailed out the group’s newsletter. She also served on their Board of Directors. In 1996, Kathy learned about Faith in Practice, an ecumenical Christian organization that sends medical mission teams to Guatemala to assist Guatemalans with their medical needs. She knew that she had found the perfect volunteer experience for her as a Spanish-speaking nurse who grew up in Central America. In May, Kathy returned from her 16th trip to Guatemala. Her husband, Gene, serves as the team leader for their trips and is on the Board of Directors of Faith in Practice. Through the years, Kathy has recruited many family and friends including Dr. Terry Villarreal, her brother, Sally Kolenda, her daughter and friends Linda Hutchinson, Bridget Yeung and Nancy Olson, to travel to Guatemala for this lifechanging mission trip. “I am so grateful that I have been able to share this experience with the people that I love and care about the most,” said Kathy. “My husband and I say that this trip reminds us of why we went into medicine in the first place, and it really makes us feel like we are making a difference.” There are many touching stories from the many medical mission trips, but one particular story, as told by Nancy Olson, who was the team photojournalist, stands out to Kathy. “A woman in triage yesterday symbolizes just how much the opportunity to receive this care means to her. She wore a beautiful blouse with embroidered birds on the front. She called the blouse her “celebration huipil,” a garment she was supposed to only wear twice in her life: at her wedding and when she is buried. However, she made an exception. She felt the opportunity to see a doctor and hopefully have her debilitating uterine condition repaired was just as monumental to her as the other two events in her life.” It is stories like this one that encourage Kathy and the team to return to

Guatemala year after year. Back in the United States, Kathy volunteers with The Community Cloth, a micro-enterprise empowering refugee women in Houston. These refugees are given seed grants to purchase materials to create handmade arts and crafts. Once sold, 100% of the proceeds from these items go directly back to the artisan. Every year, Kathy and her daughter host a market in December at her home for all of their friends to purchase items from these ladies. “The first year of the market, sales were nearly $4000,” said Kathy. “It is very fulfilling to see the pride in ownership these ladies take in what they’ve created and how well they’ve assimilated into our culture with such limited resources.” Kathy feels that it is truly a way to honor God by helping these ladies thrive and succeed on their own in the United States. In addition to volunteering with The Community Cloth, Kathy also honors God through her volunteer work as the AM Coordinator of Merry Ministries, an ecumenical Bible Study of over 400 women at Sugar Land First United Methodist Church. She is grateful to be part of a ministry that has such a powerful impact on so many ladies in the community. Her passion for history and art led to her involvement with the Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation. She is proud of the foundation’s work to restore the historic Sugar Land Auditorium, the oldest public building in Sugar Land. She has been an active member of this organization, working on the annual gala and The Founders’ Ball while also serving as a Board Member and member of the Executive Committee for a total of 12 years. commitments has been to the City of Sugar Land. Kathy has been a member of both the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustment over the past twelve years. She is currently the Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission. In addition, she is also serving on the Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee. “I got involved with the Planning and Zoning Commission because I am interested in city planning, and I wanted to serve the City,” said Kathy. “I’ve enjoyed all of my positions, and I am happy to serve wherever the mayor and City Council can best use me.” Kathy’s impact has also been felt with her yearly contribution to the BP MS 150 bike ride. For the past ten years, Kathy has been a top fundraiser for the ride. She is continually encouraged by the advances that have been made in the research and treatment aspects of Multiple Sclerosis. Her daughter, Sally Kolenda, is the current Director of Community Affairs for BP and Project Manager for Team BP. Other family members including her brother, sister-inlaw, cousins and son have participated in the ride with her, so for Kathy, the ride really is a family affair. Kathy is an incredible asset to the community. She encourages all citizens to help their community while also thinking about others outside of the Fort Bend “bubble.” Her passion for serving God through serving others is remarkable and infectious. Kathy’s life is extraordinarily filled with priceless moments of her wholeheartedly giving of herself to help others. For her tireless service to others, devotion to everything that she does and a heart bigger than Texas, Fort Bend Focus Magazine is proud to honor Kathy Villarreal Huebner as a JEWEL of Fort Bend.

Musings from America’s Top Financial Advisors

I

recently attended the Barron’s America’s Top Advisors conference in Washington D.C. and had the opportunity to hear and speak with top professional advisors from all over America. These advisors had been selected by Barron’s, whose sister publication is the Wall Street Journal, based on a proprietary process measuring client satisfaction, growth and a clean compliance record. All participants were part of teams, which is significantly different from the single advisor that has dominated the business for decades. Because of today’s complex financial matters involving investments and estate planning, a team of collective wisdom is needed to provide solutions to solving problems. Each member of the team has a specialty, such as estate planning, risk management, retirement specialist, portfolio manager and client service just to name a

few. This allows a client to tap into the strength of the organization knowing a successful process exists which represents their best interests. Wall Street is famous for fads. They come and go. Initially, the team concept was met with great skepticism by industry professionals, who were trained as “sole practitioners” who specialized in only one thing, such as municipal bonds or equities. That view is changing as clients demand more service and advice. This trend is here to stay. Life is full of changes. How we respond to those changes determines the quality of life we and future generations live. Fortunately, the Hardee Investment Group and its predecessors have embraced this process since the late 1970s. We seek to provide the quality of advice that will allow our clients to live the lifestyle they desire with peace of mind. We

believe this practice is truly in the client’s best interest. In future articles, we will discuss more thoughts from the conference. We’re ready to join your team. Missouri City Ballet Outreach Program Coaches Students to Reach Their Dreams The Missouri City Ballet, Fort Bend County’s premier non-profit ballet company, is the vision of founder and executive director D’Ann Shaver Gimenez. Gimenez, along with Artistic Director Sharon Teague. It has developed into an organization that offers superior training in classical ballet and produces quality performing art productions in the Fort Bend area while maintaining an outreach program through dance education and scholarships. Missouri City Ballet, which trains at Laeral Dance Academy, strives to “keep ballet classic” by offering comprehensive training in ballet technique and artistic expression. Kristin Thomas-Martin, former ballerina with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and ballet mistress along with Teague, train their students so thoroughly that four dancers from MCB were accepted to and attended the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet in New York City. The dancers trained under one of the most legendary ballerinas of our time and returned to MCB with a better understanding of the dramatic art of storytelling through ballet. Missouri City Ballet will be performing Swan Lake in October and The Nutcracker in November. Please visit www.missouricityballet.org for more information. Headliners continued on page 48

Where does a chipmunk sleep? What does an eagle feed its young? How do mother bats find their babies in a cave? In Animal Secrets, a special summer exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, families learn the answers to these questions and more as they explore the hidden habitats and secret lives of forest animals. Using imaginative role-play and hands-on activities, visitors discover nature from an animal’s point of view in naturalistic environments, including a stream, meadow, woodland, cave and naturalists’ tent. A grant from the Wells Fargo Advisors Investing in Our Communities initiative helped bring the exhibit to the museum for families to enjoy this summer. he only thing more dangerous than the threat that faces the good citizens of suburban Glenview is the four guys who have come together to save them. Meet the Neighborhood Watch: civic-minded Evan (Ben Stiller), funloving family guy Bob (Vince Vaughn), tough-talking “wild card” Franklin (Jonah Hill) and the looking-for-love divorcé Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade). In this seemingly serene enclave, Evan, Bob, Franklin and Jamarcus have decided to join forces to safeguard their community. In addition, they’re enjoying some of the perks that come with being a “Watcher.” Even with – or maybe because of – their spiffy new “Watch” jackets, which are emblazoned with fiery wings and a tiger head, the not-so-fearsome foursome initially gets no respect from the residents they’re supposedly protecting. A group of kids plaster them with eggs, and the local cops think they’re a joke. But when the guys’ patrol vehicle hits something that leaves behind a trail of green goo and a

tentacle of some sort, and they find a strange, bowling ball-like device that emits a concentrated beam of energy. They realize that their little group has stumbled onto something bigger than a prowler on the loose. “When they formed this ‘band of brothers,’ the guys thought, sure, they might encounter some weird neighborhood stuff – may-

be a burglar here or peeping tom there – but suddenly they realize they are facing something extraordinary,” says producer Shawn Levy. “And, the guys are not just unprepared or unqualified; they are not remotely equipped to deal with this problem, yet it’s all on them to stop it.” To play the four members of The Watch, Levy and director Akiva Schaffer (a creative force on several famed Saturday Night Live short films) tapped three comedy icons and a fastrising talent. “We wanted the best,” says Levy, “and so we went out and got the best – three titans – together in the same movie! And then, we threw in the ‘grenade’ of Richard Ayoade!” Ben Stiller’s Evan is a senior manager at the superstore Costco, having made a not-so-lightning-fast ascent to that position from assistant manager. Evan is a dedicated employee, but his heart is with the Glenview Neighborhood Watch, of which he is the founder and CEO. Evan’s latest endeavor fits nicely within his wheelhouse of facilitating civic-minded endeavors. He’s also organized the Glenview Running Club, Recycling Team and even a Spanish table at the community center. “Evan is very communityoriented,” says Stiller, “because he has so few friends, and these clubs give him the opportunity to meet new people.” Evan’s straight-laced, buttoneddown personality is a perfect fit for or-

ensuring his neighbors’ safety.” Still, the responsibilities of family do weigh heavily on Bob, who loves his wife and teenage daughter who is capturing the attentions of the opposite sex, and Dad is not happy about it. “She’s growing up faster than Bob would like, so he’s trying to keep her under lockdown,” says Vaughn. The youngest member of the team is Franklin (Jonah Hill), a twentysomething, militant looking tough guy with, notes Schaffer, “a sweetness just underneath.” He still lives at home with his mom. Franklin has a planet-size chip on his shoulder because he’s been rejected as a candidate for the police force and all other law enforcement organizations. “Franklin is alienated from, well everything,” says Hill. “He’s very strange and very funny.”

Stiller says he found it challenging to figure out the mindset of a man whose life is defined by a relentless pursuit of order. “I’m not very orderly,” explains the actor, who is currently starring in and directing The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. “It wasn’t easy getting inside the mind of a meticulous, stoic and organized guy.” Regarding the role’s more physical requirements, Stiller was comfortable with the fight scenes where The Watch takes on the would-be conquerors from a distant world, but less so with a scene that required him to drive a forklift during a climactic battle. “There was lots of action captured on camera, but driving the forklift made for some of the most frightening times on the set – for the crew,” says the actor. Evan’s polar opposite is Vince Vaughn’s Bob, who is the id to Evan’s superego, the yang to his yin, and, says Schaffer, “a fun loving family man – to the max.” For Bob, The Watch is his fraternal Shangri-La – an escape from the everyday responsibilities of family life. “Bob is longing to hang out with the guys, have some drinks, talk about guy stuff, and let off some steam,” says Vaughn.

And ground zero for all the raucous fun is Bob’s tricked-out garage/man-cave and its wet bar, massage chairs, widescreen TV, and pool table. “Bob is a big teddy bear of a guy,” says Levy, who is currently directing Vaughn, along with Owen Wilson, in the comedy The Internship. “He’s boisterous and gregarious and in The Watch as much for the bromance as for the responsibilities of

Pool Table The game room has large cathedral ceilings over a pool table and spacious area to relax. The chairs came from the homeowner’s mother-in-law, and they have been recovered in cowhides, an idea that came from the homeowner herself.

Wet Bar The homeowners found the sink in a little store and ordered the granite from a custom dealer in Pattison.

Master Bathroom Not big on Jacuzzi tubs, the homeowner opted for an oldfashioned claw foot tub that her grandchildren love to bathe in.

Star This star, situated in the entry way, was a special feature designed by the flooring company.

Family Room and Kitchen The heart of the home for a family of cooks, the spacious kitchen and family room is perfect for entertaining.

Kitchen People typically gather around the appetizers placed on the bar or can opt to pitch in and help, as often happens in this beautifully appointed kitchen.

Back Yard With a requisite pool and covered porch, the one-acre back yard has a full vegetable garden, herb garden and outdoor kitchen with all the bells and whistles.

Home Front With a Texas flagstone walkway and a stone façade, this beautiful Fulbrook neighborhood home sits on a beautifully landscaped lot and has friendly neighbors.

Baker Mortgage: Helping Dreams Come True For Over 55 Years to answer, text messages….sound familiar? With all the screens screaming for my attention, I must make time to walk away and unplug. My wife, Sabrina, and I love to sit outside in our backyard gardens and talk about our day. I am happy to hear from our clients that they use their gardens to spend time with their families, too. Women particularly enjoy a place to sit outside and feel relaxed—their own refuge. As fall of 2012 approaches, let’s replace what died in the drought with something that will grow better in the heat! Go to our new Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ GardenGuyHouston for a valuable coupon or call us at 281-208-4400. See ad on page 57.

Martha Turner Opens New Location in Fort Bend A new home is an exciting prospect, even for realtors. And we at Martha Turner Properties are very excited about our new home, our sixth, just 20 minutes south in dynamic Sugar Land. The new Martha Turner Properties office at 4690 Sweetwater Boulevard is perfectly located to serve our Sugar Land clients and realtors alike. One of the fastest growing areas in the United States, Sugar Land and Fort Bend County are also one of the most desirable places to live. Sugar Land is home to the headquarters of Imperial Sugar and the company’s main sugar refinery and distribution center was once located in this city. “I’ve waited so long for just the right location, and it’s so exciting for us to be able to increase our level of service for everyone in the Sugar Land area.” We look forward to servicing all of your Fort Bend real estate needs. H O M E F E ATURE By Sophia Vas s i l i o u

Collect Yourself

Sophia’s Tips: Showcase & Edit

I

ncorporating collections of favorite or unusual things in your home décor scheme not only makes for interesting displays, as an added bonus, they will also free up storage space. When starting a collection, it is great to find something that really speaks to you aesthetically and organically. This is about what interests you – your favorite things. I have worked with clients who have everything from American vintage pottery to Murano glass pieces scattered throughout their home. One client had a fabulous hat collection stored away and another had natural skin, handmade boots hidden. When items are grouped together and displayed well, you have a wonderful, but more importantly, an unexpected collection. Personally, I like chairs. Naturally they’re important in my design work, but I appreciate the history, craftsmanship, function and beauty of them. A

client gave me a small Shaker Chair lapel pin after we had successfully found the life-size ones needed for her kitchen. That led to my small chair collection exhibited on a wall with others ones I have restored and painted. Collecting is an easy, affordable project that grows as you find new treasures and serves as a wonderful design addition to your space. And, they can be great conversation pieces in your home. For more information on collecting or other design projects, contact Sophia Designs at www.sophiadesigns.com.

Find an area that is easily seen like a bookshelf or wall area. Install or hang pieces depending on what they are. The area should be well lit for a pleasing arrangement.

Adding On

You may run across collectables where you’d least expect while traveling, shopping at antique or hardware stores, garage or estate sales.

Gifting

Does your friend love scarves? Find unique ones along the way to add to her collection. Keep in mind gifts for special occasions – graduation, home, baby, holiday – may serve as the beginning of a new collection for others. fort bend

Tailgating Pantry By Stephenie Cox irst and 10, let’s do it again! It’s finally football season. Time to get your favorite drinks chilling and get the grill fired up. Cheering on your favorite team certainly can make you work up an appetite. Create a pantry just perfect to entertain and for quick loading of coolers and trunks. A perfectly stocked pantry means less time planning the food and more time eating! So pack up the back of your SUV, pickup or even pop-up tent whether you are heading to Reliant Stadium or even your kids weekly Peewee Football game parking lot and you will be sure to have a roaring good time. Masters grillers be ready. Make sure you have plenty of propane or charcoal brickets. There is nothing worse than waiting for the grill to get fired up with a crowd of hungry people. Stock the basics. Salt, pepper, some sort of seasoned salt, ketchup, mustard, steak sauce, BBQ sauce and the appropriate rubs/ seasonings for each meat is what you will need to grill. Even if you decide to go with just hamburgers and hot dogs, good seasonings and condiments can make these more bland tailgating foods pop. Bring on the bacon. Bacon is the ultimate ingredient to make almost any dish better. Are your burgers bland? Add some bacon. Does your potato salad lack a certain something? Add some bacon. Did someone bring a boring green leafy salad? Add some bacon. Utilize your freezer. Stock up on steaks, tenderloin, hot dogs, hamburgers and buns, and with a quick thaw, they are ready to be transformed into some tasty tailgate fare. Get game. Football season goes hand in hand with hunting season. Plan to share your tasty dove, waterfowl and deer with your guests. Add the spice. Not only can peppers like jalapenos and habaneros give a kick to your dishes, they can also lead to hot peppereating contests. Chili fixings. Everyone has their own style and favorite. Make sure you

F

have all the components to pull together a crock pot of steaming chili. A nice, hot bowl of chili makes for a great topping for hot dogs, nachos or just about anything. Queso. Whether you are a real cheddar fan or Velveeta is your downfall, have cheese and cans of rotel tomatoes ready to whip up some queso. Chips, chips and more chips. Potato, tortilla, cheese puffs...tailgating is a must with these tasty crunchers. They are easy to store and please even the pickiest of your guests. Pizza, pizza. Have your favorite pizzeria’s phone number taped to the trunk door. Let’s face it; sometimes you need a plan “B” should your hamburgers get burnt into unrecognizable lumps of charcoal. It’s quick, simple and particularly effective at quieting those, “Is the food ready yet?” complaints from your kids.

People need to come together as a community to fight against what’s going on in our schools. We do have substance abuse in Fort Bend County.” Despite noting that many people are not “aware of what FBRC offers,” even though it’s been around since 1976, Wisner says the successes keep her motivated. “Seeing the successes that we have had relative to people who go through our treatment programs and learn long term sobriety is a wonderful thing to me,” she said. “Even if I can prevent one family from going through substance abuse by educating them, that’s rewarding.” For more information regarding the Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse, visit www.fortbendcouncil.org or call 281-207-2400. On July 31, Anson Aviation broke ground on its 24,000 square foot, stateof-the art office and hangar facility at Sugar Land Regional Airport. Anson Air already operates the only FAA approved pilot school at the airport. The $3 million facility will allow Anson to expand its offering of innovative aviation services and create 15 new aviation jobs at Sugar Land Regional. According to founder and president, Dana Atkinson: “Our business plan has always been based on challenging the traditional assumptions of our industry. For example, we see training pilots and renting airplanes as a lifestyle business, not an airplane business. The mobility and freedom available to pilots of personal airplanes fits perfectly with the premium lifestyle offered by Sugar Land and Fort Bend County.” The customer service driven attitude of Anson’s business also involves helping aspiring professional pilots to achieve their dreams of flying careers. Anson offers a full range of pilot courses, and the company provides flight training for the professional pilot programs at San Jacinto Community College and Mountain State University. In coming months Anson plans to announce additional innovative aeronautical services for pilots, airplane owners and the general public. Atkinson commented, “It is our vision to provide all of the services and expertise needed to enable our customers to enjoy private airplanes for business and personal travel. Airplane owners, pilots who rent airplanes and the general public will find a friendly, inviting, professional atmosphere with everything they need for personal air transportation.” Sugar Land Regional Airport is a well-established and rapidly expanding center for aviation. It is the fourth largest airport in the greater Houston area and one of the foremost general reliever airports in the gulf coast region. For more information, visit www. ansonair.com. M EDICAL F OCUS UT MD Anderson Named Nation’s Top Hospital for Cancer in U.S. News & World Report Survey For the sixth consecutive year, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has been named the nation’s top hospital for cancer care, according to the “Best Hospitals” survey published annually by U.S. News & World Report magazine. Also nationally ranked are MD Anderson specialty services, including ear, nose and throat (#5); gynecology (#6) and urology (#23). Other specialties, which earned “High Performing” rankings in the national survey, were gastroenterology, geriatrics, nephrology and orthopedics. In a separate survey of pediatric hospitals conducted earlier this year, MD Anderson’s Children’s Cancer Hospital was ranked number 15 in the nation. In the last 11 years, MD Anderson has been ranked number one in cancer care nine times. Since the survey launched in 1990, it has been listed as one of the top two hospitals for cancer care in the nation. “Everyone at MD Anderson - each one of our 19,000-plus employees and 1,100 volunteers - contributed to us remaining the number one cancer center in the nation,” said Ronald A. DePinho, M.D., who is experiencing the national ranking for the first time as president of MD Anderson. “It’s an honor we share with all of our patients, survivors and their loved ones, who challenge and motivate us every day to pursue our mission, advance our knowledge and improve each person’s experience at our institution.” MD Anderson has grown in clinical and research activity, square footage and outreach throughout the last decade. Since September, when DePinho joined MD Anderson, new growth opportunities have been directed toward an innovative scientific offensive against cancer. Employment continues to tick upward with MD Anderson

hiring a variety of positions, primarily laboratory scientists, research assistants, clinical nurses, research nurses and patient care support staff. One of Houston’s largest employers, MD Anderson has openings at its four regional care centers as well as the Texas Medical Center location. New floors in the expanded Albert B. and Margaret M. Alkek Hospital opened as patient care needs dictated, and the 25-story administrative building, known as Mid Campus Building 1, began filling with MD Anderson departments. The Houston Main Building was imploded late last year and its site will become a temporary park opening late this summer. Construction of the new Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Building, a 12-story structure is under way with its projected opening in late 2014. The building will house a translational research program that will focus on genetic analysis-based research, diagnosis and treatment. Undergoing a major renovation is the inpatient unit of the Children’s Cancer Hospital. When completed next spring, the new unit will add dedicated pediatric intensive care rooms and a day hospital for outpatient treatment to a larger inpatient unit. “Cancer has experienced a conceptual and technological revolution,” said DePinho. “These transformative advances, together with MD Anderson’s critical mass of talent and research infrastructure, provide unprecedented opportunities to dramatically reduce cancer mortality in the near term and set the stage for making cancer history in the decades ahead.” With 11 Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grants, MD Anderson ranks first in the number of grants awarded and the total number of grant dollars from the National Cancer Institute. Last year, MD Anderson research efforts totaled more than $623 million.

High School HOT SHOT

By Lauren Dante

Kristi Morris: Kickin’ It Up!

K

risti Morris is beginning her senior year at Thurgood Marshall High School. She is actively involved in her school and cannot wait to see what her senior year will hold for her. As a transfer student from Clements High School after tenth grade, Kristi has been involved with a gamut of activities from Youth in Philanthropy (YIP), Earth Club, Business Professionals of America, Model United Nations, International Thespian Society, Soccer and Athletic Training. Not only is Kristi active in school activities, she is also an “A” student. Kristi challenges herself by taking International Baccalaureate classes. These classes are very similar to college courses and will prepare Kristi to enter college with enough credits to be classified as a sophomore. Kristi is in the top ten percent of her graduating class and has enjoyed a wide range of classes throughout high school, such as her Sophomore English class, World Geography class and Latin class. She describes herself as a huge history buff, because she remembers random facts. Considering her love for history, it is no surprise that Kristi excelled as a member of Model United Nations. In the 10th grade, Kristi extensively studied Ghana and became the Human Rights Representative for Ghana at the Rice University Model United Nations convention. “With Model United Nations, I learned about social and political issues around the world,” said Kristi. “As I was learning about Ghana, I realized that Ghana and Nigeria, my country of origin, are very similar and share many political beliefs.” Kristi is very interested in learning about other countries. Being a participant for Model United Nations and developing a love of

i t s i Kr

new cultures and travel enhanced Kristi’s skills as a member of the Business Professionals of America organization. Kristi joined this club as a junior and is the president of the club this year. She competed in the Interview Skills competition and won 4th place at the regional competition. For the Interview Skills competition, Kristi participates in a hypothetical interview with a panel of three judges. This competition prepares students for life situations and an actual job interview. Another organization that Kristi enjoys is YIP. Once a month, Kristi volunteers with a local nonprofit for the day. Kristi volunteered at Helping Hands, Regional Council for Substance Abuse and the American Red Cross, to name a few. “I like YIP because it was an eye-opening experience,” said Kristi. “In our school district, we have nice homes, and seeing people suffering from poverty and addiction was an eye-opener for me. I feel like I know how to better help the world now.” Kristi’s favorite project was at Helping Hands. Helping Hands helps people obtain necessities, such as food and clothes. At their location, Kristi met Marshall. “Marshall had recently suffered from a stroke and had to learn how to talk again,” said Kristi. “However, he was vol-

unteering at Helping Hands just like us; he was helping people when he was the one who needed the help.” It felt good for Kristi to know that she was helping people who really did need her assistance. Volunteering and helping people is important to Kristi. In tenth grade, Kristi was a member of the Earth Club at Clements. As a member of the club, Kristi assisted with trash pick-up, recycling and educating the school about the benefits of recycling. Marshall does not currently have an Earth Club, but Kristi is interested in starting the club. As a new student at Marshall last year, Kristi became involved very quickly and joined the International Thespian Society. Kristi was involved with the Black History Month production last school year. She is looking forward to participating in more productions this year and will serve as the club’s treasurer. In addition to being a member of the Thespian Society, Kristi is also a dedicated athlete. She has played soccer since sixth grade. She was on Marshall’s varsity soccer team last year and played goalie and midfield. She also serves as the athletic trainer for the varsity volleyball team. “I decided to be an athletic trainer because I am interested in medicine, and I would like to become a doctor,” said Kristi. “I like being an athletic trainer, because I enjoy helping people.” As a multi-talented young adult, Kristi will be successful. She plans to attend college in California and become a pediatrician. With her caring and positive outlook on life, Kristi will be a wonderful pediatrician. We wish Kristi the best as she begins her senior year and makes plans for her bright future!

Many drivers who saw the stakes, stopped to read the sign regarding their purpose, according to Nolen. The Club also announced their new board members, as of July 1, 2012: Crissy Nolen, president; Mike Reichek, Immediate pastfort bend

president; Katina Scott, president-elect; Bill Russell, vice president, Kelli Metzenthin, treasurer; and Charlie Huber, secretary. New board members are Barbara Piazzo, Bill Leavitt, Kaelyn Bujnoch and Rebecca Maitland. Nolan has many plans for her upcoming year as president, which includes hosting another successful Duck Classic Golf Tournament, October 15, continuing the mission of the Club by increasing efforts in the prevention of child abuse, increasing hands-on community service projects, increasing membership and more. “Our Duck Classic Golf Tournament raises funds, which allow us to support non-profits in preventing child abuse and to support other programs in our communities,” Nolen said. According to Nolen, the Exchange Club’s focuses are Americanism, child abuse prevention, community service and youth projects. “The Exchange Club of Fort Bend meets at noon every Wednesday at Sweetwater Country Club. All are welcome, and we invite those in the community to join us,” Nolen said.

Off to an Orphanage

I

f you ask me for help, and it involves children ... chances are I am going to say yes! A few years ago, I was asked by Nick Desai if I would travel with him to his native land of India. I said yes, and a few months ago, he made good on his promise to take me there. To say I was ill prepared for the journey would not be exactly fair since I knew that my task would be to photograph one of his orphanages. I was aware of the situation in India, and he and I had several conversations concerning how the children there were treated; more or less, they are thrown away. As a mother, it bothered me. I could not get my mind wrapped around how one could actually abandon and leave one’s own offspring to starve. India has a devastating rate of poverty, malnutrition and illiteracy. As a result, the children are sold into prostitution and introduced to drugs early, and the country as a whole is quite dismal. I was prepared for these things when I entered the country, and these things I did indeed find. After my long flight, we rested only two hours before going in the night seven hours north to the village of Dumda. The building where the children live is small, made of concrete cinder blocks has one room for sleeping on dirt floors with only small cracks for light and aeration. A room adjacent to that serves as their kitchen, which consists of a small work table with a fire pit in the floor. It is hot in there and a blanket on the floor has a scattered handful of onions and potatoes that will feed the children. When I first arrived, I was greeted by a porch full of smiling faces ranging from ages 3 to 15. The children were happy and appeared to be healthy. They were dressed in beautiful clothes and prepared a performance for us singing and dancing much like my own children at their schools. I began getting to know each of the children and discovered they are better off than their unsaved cohorts, but they are

still very much in need of more. I have taken all of my luggage space in packing not for myself but to stash as many toys, lollipops, cars, trains and dolls as I can possibly carry. A sweet lady in the Houston airport spotted me early in my journey and quietly whispered to me to go to the gate upstairs where no one would be counting or weighing bags. That was the first God wink of many along my path. The journey was long and brutal without much stopping or resting. By the time I reached the children, it was Friday, and we had been traveling without sleeping since Wednesday. I had been able to get three bags with me to the orphanage, and now it was time for me to give the children my gifts. A big thank you needs to be said to Roland and Jonna Flores, Tressa, Angela Majors and Erin Dodd for gathering and bringing me so many toys and candies. The children were thrilled to get a small whistle, a piece of candy. I saw boys playing with cars and trains with bright smiles, and it made me wonder where were their other toys? How could it be childhood without toys? I wanted to summon up the North Pole and magically have the big man in red appear fully conscious of the fact that I was indeed their Santa Claus. Despite all these gifts, probably the most important gift I gave them was not fort bend

a surprise to any who truly know me. It had occurred to me that although all the children had their basic needs met, no one would have thought to give them a portrait of themselves. Portraits are what I do, and I felt deeply responsibly to the children to be able to gift them one of themselves. You should have seen their faces as the pictures began popping out of the camera! It was truly an amazing sight – all their faces lit up running around with their pictures flapping in their hands! I realized then that my work there was done. They would be better off than they had been when I found them, and despite their plight in life, they would overcome, rise above, and hopefully, leave someday. I could see it in their eyes; they have gratitude, and most of all, hope. On September 7th in Sugar Land at the JW Marriott, The Hope Endowment, the organization that funds the orphanage, is having a gala. The children need funding for a new building, and they need other material things as well. If you are interested in donating or attending, call 832-598-4886 or email hopeendowment@ gmail.com. Take Care of YOU – and the children!
