Indian Muslims in Houston break ranks; Join “Howdy Modi” welcome committee

By HAIDER KAZIM, HOUSTON: The Indian Muslims Association of Greater Houston has decided to become a Welcome Partner for the community reception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it is another step by IMAGH to rise above divisive politics, in solidarity with other Indian-American organizations. It was a unanimous decision by the IMAGH Board of Directors and the Executive Committee to be part of the organizing committee. “The mission of IMAGH is to foster unity across cultures, communities and religion. We can only work toward this goal by engaging with all groups. We may not agree with their beliefs, practices or ideas but unless we interact with them in a cordial and friendly atmosphere, we cannot get our point of view across to them,” said Dr. Maqbool Haq, Chairman of the IMAGH Board of Directors. Alluding to plans by a section of the people to stage a protest at NRG Stadium where Prime Minister Modi will be addressing the community on September 22, Dr Haq said, “We feel we should try to have a seat at the table to present our views rather than not be at the table.” Latafath Hussain, founding president of IMAGH, said “I am very proud to be both an Indian and a Muslim. Growing up in Varanasi, (Modiji’s constituency) I always felt that I had the same opportunities as everyone else. So when the duly elected leader of Mother India, is visiting my adopted home town, it is my duty See MUSLIMS, Page 4. to give him a warm welcome.”

NEWS 400 performers, 27 groups, 2 original songs lined up for “Howdy, Modi!” HOUSTON Attendees to “Howdy, Modi!” will be in for a once in a lifetime cultural program at the start of the event on Sunday, September 22 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. They will get to see “Woven: The Indian-American Story”, a 90 minute cultural program that is a celebration of Indian-Americans and their contributions to the cultural, intellectual, and social landscape of the United States. The over 50,000 attendees and those watching at home will experience the vibrant expressions of a people empowered by their identity and driven to enrich the communities around them. The program will start at 10:00 am before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the stadium. Presented by the Texas India Forum, Woven is a 90-minute music, dance, and multimedia show featuring close to 400 artists and community members from Texas and across the nation. There are 27 groups performing in a seamless live and multimedia experience that will showcase the diversity in the IndianAmerican community. Two original songs have been written for the program, which will trace the journey of Indian-American youth learning their roots to understanding how to put that together with the contemporary world. “A challenge that many second and third generation IndianAmericans go through is navigating the complexity of having a hyphenated identity as an Indian and an American. Woven showcases the multiplicity of Indian-American experience. Our hope is that each person sees themselves in at least one form of expression and recognizes that whatever mix of Indian and American they are, it is just right,” said Heena Patel, CEO of MELA Arts Connect and co-producer of the program. The show will also shine a light on unsung heroes in the IndianAmerican community who have undertaken selfless acts benefiting the broader American community without any need of recognition. From the classical and folk traditions passed on in basements across America to the creative exchange between Eastern and

COMMUNITY Muslims From Page 1 In a major outreach effort three months ago, IMAGH invited Ramesh Bhutada, national vice president of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh in America to be the chief guest at the organization’s signature event to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, opening a new door for Hindu-Muslim cooperation in Houston and

beyond. Bhutada was forthcoming in his speech and received a standing ovation by over 500 people at the event. He introduced himself as vice president of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, which is an independent US organization that takes inspiration from RSS in India and declared: “The RSS and the HSS would like communal harmony and unity amongst all religions.”

Bhutada quoted RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat as telling an interviewer in Houston that “India’s development cannot be complete without the development and progress of the minorities.” Bhutada said: “We all have historical baggage - let’s acknowledge that - but we cannot look backwards. We have to look forward and that is the only way we can lead a peaceful life in this world.” Hussain thinks that in

order to move forward we must understand that we may be Hindus or Muslims or Christians but we are primarily Indian and are “part and parcel” of the Indian community in Houston. “ In the community, there are, as there should be, political differences, but that’s for private debate. In front of the larger Houston and American community, we have to stand as one,” he said. Vijay Pallod, who is on the

boards of IMAGH and Hindus of Greater Houston (HGH), says that both the organizations are unique in their role to carry out their missions with respect and understanding for each other. The close cooperation between the Hindu and Muslim organizations dates back to September 2010 when India Culture Center, an umbrella organization of various Indian groups, decided to host an Eid Milan party in collaboration with Indian Muslim groups. The joint event was an instant success and led to the creation of IMAGH to foster amity across cultures, communities, and religions. “We, in Houston, are proud to have a united happy community that respects interfaith customs and traditions by participating and celebrating Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas and Baisakhi,” said Col. Raj Bhalla who was the Event Chair of the Eid Milan party in 2010. Talking about the joint event, Swapan Dhairyawan, former president of the ICC , said “this interaction and pollination has led to several positive and healthy relationships not only among individuals but also between organizations.” India’s Consul General in Houston, Dr. Anupam Ray, also helped in promoting cooperation by hosting an Iftar party in the fasting month of Ramadan for the past four years where people professing different faiths and nationalities were invited to break the fast with Muslims at the end of the day. Although these efforts may seem feeble at first, the Houston community is showing its determination to move forward as ONE. Some 50,000 people have registered to hear Prime Minister Modi in what will be the largest audience in the US for a visiting foreign leader other than the Pope. Some 612 organizations have registered so far to be the Welcome Partner and the online registration is still open on howdymodi. org. Over 1,000 volunteers are working tirelessly to make the event a grand spectacle for the Houston community.

Temple Worship and Learning Tradition in Ancient Education His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda is currently visiting Houston. He will give a special presentation on indigenous education that has survived in India since ancient times due to the sequestered schooling environs of the inner courtyards of temples and monasteries. On Sept. 14, at Houston Durgabari Society at 5:30 p.m. Swami Vidyadhishananda will share the mystery of temple altars and the scientific value of worship rituals and why chanting of verses that were memorized by heart is a hallmark of indigenous education for children and adults alike. At the end of the discourse he will show short videos from the inner courtyards temples and monasteries that bear testimony to this incredible surviving education system. His Holiness is a Himalayan monk of the ancient Vedanta order, who is a kriyāyogi and a meditation master from the combined heritage of rishi sages and nath yogis. He was awarded the degree of Mahāmahopādhyāya (DLitt et Phil) by the university system in India due to his scholarly and meditative interpretation of Sanskrit literature. He is the spiritual founder of Self Enquiry Life Fellowship and head of the Hansavedas Mission. A simple vegetarian supper prasāda will be offered following the discourse. Entrance is free with required registration.

Glimpses Into Hansavedas It is the Veda, that marks the birth of human wisdom. First realized

by Rishis in exalted states of consciousness the Veda revealed the nature of unchangeable knowledge, the eternally valid Satya. It revealed the blueprint of cosmos and the nature of consciousness itself. Uncreated, but variably preserved through the oral tradition due to ebb and flow of time, the Veda is the imperishable life breath of Indic and World civilization. It is the reason for India’s continuity. As long as India preserves Veda, it will preserve itself. The seed of humanity’s rebirth shall thus remain secure. Hansavedas, is the manifest promise , that the gift of priceless wisdom shall be the heritage of all. Centuries have passed by and the ruins of mighty empires have turned to relics in museums but the Veda is still alive, so that people like us can look at what remains and imagine what was. During our visits to Varanasi and Prayag the mother cities of civilization, we were privileged to get a glimpse of Vedic hermitages where students pursue the ultimate knowledge under the careful tutelage of extraordinary Acharyas such as Swami Sharadanada Giri and Mahamohopadhyaya Swami Vidyadhishananda Giri. Drawn from the poorest families these children with sparkling eyes, can be heard chanting and receiving the oral tradition today, as was done millennia ago. They learn Darshana, Ganit Shashtra, Vigyana, Arts beside Veda. Some continue as Acharya and keep the tradition alive, like a lamp that needs to be kept alive amidst unpredictable winds. Their demeanor is joyful, life austere but they remind us that there is nothing more uplifting than Knowledge. We have been privileged to visit these Ved Pathshalas and be moved by the simple spontaneity of children. Their joy is in the harmony of learning and conscious living untouched by the deceptive glitter of possession. The Acharyas are unassuming masters whose lives are pledged to India’s magnificent tradition. Some are masters, firmly rooted in their Sadhana and Seva to transmit the divine Knowledge to the young minds who may one day do the same Truth and Tradition too are subject to the judgements of time. Over a millennia we have lost almost all of the tradition but for a few shoots that sprout even today, whose loss would wipe out the vitality of human consciousness. The Indian tradition is not a historical relic, it is a living breathing expression of the highest expression of divinity and creativity known to man. We are duty bound to preserve and protect our precious heritage. Please join us in preserving the Veda through Hansavedas. Manish Rungta Subroto Gangopadhyay

Kashmiri Overseas Association: Misinformation on abrogation of Article 370/ 35A is causing conflict

By SEEMA HAKHU KACHRU Article 370 and 35A of the Indian constitution allowed a breeding ground for armed violence in Jammu and Kashmir for over 70 years, which worsened in 80’s, resulting in the ethnic cleansing, selective killings & forced migration of over 500,000 Kashmiri Hindus in 1990, says a US based organisation representing the Kashmiri diaspora. In a statement, the Kashmiri Overseas Association (KOA), said the campaign of intimidation and harassment had been ongoing in the valley for decades and worsened in the late 80s with growing influence of the strait-laced interpretation of Islam propagated through “Wahabism.” Pakistan was able to capitalize on this by financing, arming and training militant groups across the border, which came to a head on the unfortunate night of January 19, 1990. “Through mosque loudspeakers, militants screamed words of hate for minorities. ‘Convert, leave, or die’ and ‘leave your women behind and send the men off’ were popular slogans. In the weeks following, leaflets were posted on the doors of Hindus asking for their immediate departure from the valley or face the consequences,” the release said. This was followed by the targeted killings of Kashmiri Hindus and Sikhs, sending clear message

to the minority that they were not welcome in the Kashmir, the KOA release said. “Fear Psychosis uprooted peace-loving & helpless minorities. Over 500,000 Hindus and Sikhs were ethnically cleansed out of their homes with sole purpose to create a minority-free Kashmir valley.” Because of the special status of Article 370, the government remained silent spectator, the KOA claimed. “We were left to bear the horrors of terrorism on our own, including being forced to witness the murders and rapes of family members. Our community members were brutally killed, with many homes, businesses, and temples destroyed. We became refugees in our own country, some forced to live in squalid tent camps” it said. These articles stripped minorities from attaining educational scholarship opportunities; deprived them of equal opportunities in business and employment. The articles were also extremely regressive for Kashmiri women subjugating them as second-class citizens in their own land. Since article 370/35A gave the J&K state assembly the right to pick and choose which Indian federal laws applied to the state, many progressive laws which benefited women in India, unfortunately, did not apply to Kashmiri women. As a result, many antiquated

laws like legalized child marriages and “triple talaq”, both banned in the rest of the country still applied in Kashmir. A Kashmiri woman lost her right to own or transfer ancestral property, if she married a nonKashmiri man; however, no such law applied to a man who married a non-Kashmiri woman. Many other progressive initiatives, such as the reservation of seats for women in local elected bodies (Panchayats), did not apply to the women of Kashmir. Thus, Kashmiri women, continued to stay behind the times, while women across India stayed ahead of the curve. While it is human nature to condemn any injustice, like loss of internet and phone lines to the people living in the Kashmir valley, it is also prudent to understand the implication of these articles that shaped the destiny of “us minorities of the region over the last 70 years”, KOA release said. The KOA believes that abrogation of these articles, will provide equal opportunities to all and a chance for the development of neglected regions like Ladakh. Removal of these articles will help curtail terrorism in the valley and empower women as more progressive laws will apply to them equally with the rest of the country, it said. Proactive measures of added security, restrictions, and internet

regulation placed by the Government of India are crucial to curb terrorism and prevent the loss of civilian lives and curtail the foreseen unrest and retaliation by militant groups, it said. “We pray for the peace of Kashmir and yearn to go back to our

homeland as the abrogation of these articles will usher in peace, equality, and justice to all indigenous Kashmiri minorities. Let us give peace a chance and space to all of us Kashmiris who need time to heal”, the release said.

Helpline got over 34,000 calls

Over 34,000 distress calls, a majority of them by people concerned about the well-being of family members living in Kashmir, were received by a Srinagar-based helpline of the CRPF following revocation of provisions of Article 370 by the Centre, officials said on Tuesday. A total of 34,274 calls were received on the ‘Madadgaar’ helpline number — 14411 — and on a few other mobile numbers, after August 5, they said. “A majority of the calls were of people enquiring about the well-being of their family and relatives living in Kashmir and about the situation in general,” a senior official said. “As many as 1,227 calls involved matters of exigency, and in these cases Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel visited houses of people in Kashmir to help establish contact between the caller and the family,” he said. The official said the CRPF personnel, dealing with the helpline, also visited the locals at their homes for a variety of other reasons such as delivering air tickets, informing people about change in date of interview or exam of students studying outside Jammu and Kashmir and informing locals about any other emergency based on a caller’s request. As many as 123 patients, suffering from kidney-related ailments, cancer, diabetes and other diseases, were provided medicines at their home by the helpline personnel, he said. The helpline worked through a few mobile numbers also during this period as the communication clampdown temporarily blocked the standard landline number — 14411. ‘Madadgaar’ was launched by the CRPF in June 2017 to help Kashmir Valley residents staying anywhere in the country. It operates from a CRPF camp in Srinagar. The helpline operates on Twitter as @CRPFmadadgaar. The schedule for elections to 316 Block Development Councils (BDCs) in Jammu and Kashmir will be announced in a day or two, with the polls to be completed before the State is formally declared a Union Territory on October 31.

VIEWS Open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Dear Modiji, You must have already been briefed by your staff about the tremendous interest showed by Houston Indo-Americans. Even one month before your visit, 50,000 (which is more than 50 % of those Houston IndoAmericans who are above 18 years) had signed up. Many had to be denied. Houston had hosted two other Indian PMs earlier- Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 and PV Narasimha Rao in 1994. Unfortunately, very few can recall what was said or what happened after their visits. At this critical juncture in world history, humankind is facing three major crises: religion driven terrorism has been threatening world peace, climate change is an existential threat to mankind, and platform based digital economy is worsening the already existing huge wealth gap. We look forward to hearing how India can contribute to defusing these crises. The bold stand you have taken in abrogating Articles 370 and 37A may indeed in the medium term help put down the jihadi terrorism. My logic is counterintuitive as discussed later. For the other two crises, India’s civilizational teaching of “simple living, high thinking” can serve as a role model. India’s submission had already highlighted this principle during the Paris Summit. Most Indians including NRIs have applauded your wise judgment. Many large countries including the ones in the Gulf have realized that Kashmir is an internal matter and others should not interfere. The UN Security Council has also taken a similar stand. This is because they know that India has the second largest Muslim population in the world who are enjoying more democratic and human rights than in the neighboring Muslim countries. They appreciate that often-mentioned eight million Kashmir Muslims are no different than 200 million Indian Muslims. If Muslims have any misgivings of any mistreatment, why are Bangladeshi Muslims illegally entering India and settling down even in the farthest part of South India? It is true that because of historic circumstances at the time of India’s independence, India did agree to give autonomy as a special case. However, in today’s totally changed environment, where secularism should guide the policy and not religious consideration, it is irrational to argue that Kashmir should be treated as an autonomous state. By supporting India’s stand, the world community will indirectly help eliminate jihadism. Raison d’être of the khilafat movement behind the jihadi movement based on religion will lose its justification in the secular world. Sometimes we hear of Kashmiris losing their identity after the removal of autonomy.

This again is a bogus argument. I am a Kashmiri Gowda Saraswat Brahmin brought up in Karnataka and my ancestors had to move away from Goa. Even after 400 years, we are able to keep our identity. Let me give another example of a Muslim majority district, Mallapuram, in Kerala, who do not agitate to be autonomous. These are just two examples. There are hundreds of such examples in India. Unfortunately blinded by pre conceived ideas and with strongly held biases, some opposition political parties in India and international media have failed to appreciate this. It is rather ironical no one is raising the issue of Kashmiri Pandits who were driven out by terrorists. While fully supporting your Kashmir policy, let me also request you to take some extra steps to give a feeling of greater safety and comfort to our Muslim brothers and sisters. You have helped the latter despite all opposition by removing the inhuman Triple Talaq. Unfortunately there is the perception that NDA is not doing enough to take action against senseless lynching and also banning beef in the name of cow protection by a few fanatics. I know you have condemned such lynching. But you can consider doing much more to silence your critiques. As far as beef is concerned, instead of banning and interfering with one’s personal choice, one way to handle cow protection is to promote vegetarianism. A recent IPCC report has argued that a global shift from meat to plant based diets (Vegetarianism) could cut as much as eight billion tons of greenhouse gases per year. This is more than the annual emission of the entire US. Even in the west where meat eating is prevalent, there is now a movement to promote vegetarianism. Under your leadership, India can be a role model by promoting vegetarianism just like you have done for Yoga. I am happy that your government is planning to implement the far reaching recommendations of Draft New Education Policy (DNEP). DNEP can transform the Macaulay imposed dysfunctional education system. But there is strong opposition from several quarters. Even some of your own party leaders are not happy with some of the recommendations. Like you have taken bold steps to pass several laws to develop India, I have the confidence that you will stand behind DNEP. However to implement DNEP, India needs a large number of professionals. It is here you can consider giving a call to well qualified NRI professionals to help India in the implementation of DNEP working with Indian professionals. This is not a reflection on the existing talents in India. After all these NRIs have been the beneficiaries of India’s

education system and this is the time for India to make use of the “brain bank”. Since Houston is also leading space and medical science, India can also develop a formal plan to make use of experts in these two sectors. Since you are visiting the oil capital of the world, let me suggest a strategy to attract more investment in petroleum sector. In the oil sector also you have taken several bold decisions where previous governments failed. Wisely you did not pass on the benefit of the lower cost of crude and increased excise taxes. Despite pressure to merge public sector oil companies to form a mega oil company, you resisted such a concept. It would have been an unmitigated disaster. Through direct benefit transfer you have practically eliminated what I call as the mother of all corruption in PDS kerosene and residential LPG distribution which was creating as much as Rs. 50,000 crores per year of black money. While I applaud you for

all these hard decisions, your government has failed to liberalize natural gas prices. It is because of this failure, foreign oil companies have not showed any interest to invest in India’s oil sector. This may come as a surprise to you that even the US has suffered in the past when gas prices were controlled. From your Houston visit, you may take this

useful lesson home to liberalize India’s gas sector. In closing, let me wish you a very productive visit which may create history and not be forgotten like the previous visits by Prime Ministers, Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 and P.V. Narasimha Rao in 1994. Regards Bhamy V. Shenoy HOUSTON

COMMUNITY Deep thoughts and delightful takeaways from Chinmaya Jnana Yajna HOUSTON Powerful presentations, effective examples, thought-provoking highlights, and practical pointers – all wrapped in simple, soulwarming down to earth discourse marked the memorable Jnana Yajna conducted by Swami Ramakrishnananda (SRKji) in Chinmaya Prabha, Houston, in the week of Aug.18-23. That week just before Janmashtami will be treasured by everyone who attended; the thought progression outlined in the morning discourses captured the mind and intellect of Vedantic seekers and then steered them toward a glimpse of the unveiled beyond. Swami Ramakrishnananda ex-

pertly unfolded the essence of Vedanta in a simple and crisp style as he presented 15 key thoughts of the Brahmasutra Adhyasa Bhasya written by Sri Adi Sankaracarya, an introduction to Bhagavan Veda Vyasa’s 555 Brahma Sutras. Swamiji’s succinct style of gently guiding the audience to reflect on the theory of superimposition was in keeping with the aphoristic sutras. The images of a cold iron ball borrowing the molten heat of fire, a segment of rope appearing as a slithering snake, and the shimmer of cool mirage waters thrown forth by the blazing sun – soon, the classic examples used for superimposition in Vedanta became easier to grasp.

CHECKUPS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR FINANCIAL HEALTH.

By the end of the week, everyone could marvel how life is just a play of mistaken projections when Truth gets covered by ignorance. And, such deep contemplation was delicious because of the sweet examples that Swamiji threw in the mix! Swamiji provided a different flavor of the timeless scriptures during his evening pravachans titled Krishna – The CEO. Selecting episodes from the itihasa of Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavatha Mahapurana, Swamiji turned into a delightful story-teller who captured hearts of young and old. The contemporary takeaways from those ancient episodes were truly invaluable. Even as he began showcasing the unforgettable ‘leelas’ of Sri Krishna, Swamiji importantly clarified how Bhagavan Krishna could be meditated upon as Brahman, worshiped as Ishvara, and adored as a Purnaavatar. However, the takeaways were focused on a fourth dimension of Bhagavan Krishna’s accomplishments as a glorious man who ex-

emplified Dharma and executed it as the most charming CEO! Every evening became a happy case study as SRKji narrated an episode in the life of Sri Krishna and beautifully brought out the lessons to be learned from Krishna’s deft handling of challenging situations that are as much a part of daily life. The audience shook with laughter as Swamiji pointed out the clever efficiency of Krishna in using Jarasandha as his unsuspecting helper in the 18-attack series which wiped out a majority of asuras and accomplished Krishna’s purpose as an avatar! Equally amusing was the way Krishna navigated family issues using his charming communication skills with Balarama. Swamiji highlighted Sri Krishna’s presence of mind in the episode of Kalayavana and Muchukunda – when SRKji dramatized the episode using nicknames such as “Mucchu” and “Kicchu,” the audience almost rolled off their seats in uncontrolled glee.

The way Lord Krishna chose the right people as his messengers in two different contexts; the balance of mind and sharpness of intellect he displayed when he was blamed and defamed; the ways he assigned tasks during the Rajasuya Yajna; involved even the enemies like Duryodhana and Karna; waited for the right time in Rukmini vivaha, comforted the Pandavas, and encouraged all to follow Dharma – the lessons shared were practical and empowering while also being most enjoyable. As the yajna concluded on Janmashtami evening, the joy of spiritual immersion in Vedanta as well as in Bhagavan’s smarana left all hearts inspired and full. Hari Om! Mehalayam, an elegant exposition of Odissi

By Nilanjana Ghose Cabrera Mehaa Raja (15) and Layaa Raja (19) mesmerized the audience with the nuances of the Odissi dance, aided by their proficiency and artistry, on August 17 at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston’s Kaplan Theater. In their debut performance, the Raja sisters had the privilege of entertaining not only the Houstonians but also their lineage guru, Padmashree Guru Aruna Mohanty, creative director of Orissa Dance Academy, based in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India. At this performance, I was simply a rasika. As such, I made a choice to experience the dancers’ artistry as a gestalt, eager for the moods and feelings the repertoire would evoke. Within the first few moments of this manchapravesh,(debut), I was charmed and transported to Rath Yatra procession -- Layaa as Lord Jagganath, invoked and awakened by Mehaa, the supplicant (Panchabhoota). I could not help but notice the audience’s applause during pivotal junctures in the story conveyed by each piece, as well as murmurs of wonder and appreciation at the post-performance dinner. It is no exaggeration to state that dance gurus, rasikas and audience members new to Odissi were moved to tears by Mehalayam. There were myriad such moments when I caught my breath, overcome: petite Mehaa filling the stage and auditorium not just with her skill, but with her presence as the omnipresent Goddess, both fierce and loving (Devi Stuti), while statuesque Layaa made a range of overtly masculine roles her own, ranging from the Creator, Sustainer and Destroyer himself (Shiva Panchaka) to Krishna (Bajuchi Sahi, Udaiyavar) to both Duryodhana and Arjuna (Udaiyavar). Most evocative to me was the pure dance piece (Rageshri Pallavi): each sister’s lyrical movements were synchronized to one another with apparent ease, as if they were twins, with lyrics and music both anchoring and uplifting their dancing. There is actually a difference of four years between them, each with her own unique personality and physique -- so their coordination was an artfully constructed and practiced illusion or magic. That each sister pivoted on a dime (often quite literally, with a coordinated succession) to assume a new persona, disappearing wholly into each new role, speaks to the depth of their learning and understanding of rasa and bhava, nritta and natya - all built upon the foundation of physical rigor required to execute step sequences during an hour and a half performance. The crowning glory of Me-

haa and Layaa’s performance was the exacting synchronicity of their movements: footwork, body, arms, and mudras all melded into a seemingly casual lasya that revealed the myriad facets of the two sisters’ natural empathy, poise, charm, and grace. With the distinction of Udaiyavar, choreographed by Shipra Avantica Mehrotra, each item was choreographed by the

late Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan or Padmashree Aruna Mohanty, the founder and current director Orissa Dance Academy, respectively. The duet choreography for all pieces (including Udaiyavar, originally choreographed as a solo) was arranged by Shipra Avantica Mehrotra. Their learning reflects a hallmark of Odissi: of slowly and sensually arriving into a

stance -- only to resume, moving onward immediately, never staying in a stance for long. I’m reminded of delicate creatures in flight: hummingbirds, dragonflies, faeries. It takes an athlete’s stamina, an aesthete’s soul, and a student’s dedication to learn and convey this quality in Odissi -and it was a pleasure to watch Mehaa and Layaa present it repeatedly.

The Raja sisters are the students of Shipra Avantica Mehrotra, a Boston-based Odissi dancer, teacher, choreographer and artistic director of Avantica Academy of Odissi Dance. Mehaa and Layaa began Odissi classes in 2012 in Houston after meeting Mehrotra at Asia Society Texas Center’s First Look Festival. Over the past

School and is earning the Girl Scout Gold Award. As a high school freshman, she won the James L. Condon Environmental Stewardship award for water research. Layaa is a sophomore at Stanford University pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. The sisters are also students of Bharatanatyam; Layaa shared her proficiency during her arangetram in 2015 (Layaa Mayuram). To achieve this level of excellence in any fine art form also requires the heart and spirit of a guide leading pilgrims to yatra. Shipra Avantica Mehrotra will tell you she is a teacher -- she hesitates to call herself a guru. Mehrotra remains a steadfast student of the form, as does any artist. She has imbued her students with the ‘secret’ of mastery: that of practice as the first building block of art, perpetually striving for perfection in laying the foundation for virtuosity. As the daughter and granddaughter of teachers, I have observed that teaching and imparting one’s own love of one’s own discipline art to others -particularly to children growing into their full humanity -- is a distinct art from mastering one’s beloved artistic discipline. Also, a sense of family and

community has been carefully nurtured by Mehrotra over more than a decade’s work, across time zones and continents and cultures. It is a distinction of her all-around achievement as an American-born, raised, and early education-trained Odissi dancer, choreographer, teacher, and leader in the dance community. “I feel as if I were in heaven!” exclaimed Dhanam Prabhu, a retired Bharatanatyam guru

(Malaysia, Bangalore). A full week and a half after Mehalayam, the venerable guru shared with me in person how the Raja sisters’ performance transported her -- and how the dancers’ artistry was showcased to perfection with the lighting, tightly synchronized to the stories told by each piece, giving the performance an otherworldly ambience. Such is the aspiration of dancers of every style: to win an esteemed guru’s acclaim. “What an amazing performance highlighting a lifetime of dedication to this beautiful art! These talented young women make Sugar Land very proud,” said Joe Zimmerman, mayor of Sugar Land. who attended the program with his wife. —Photography by IRFAN & TYLER ROBIN

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI India’s dour mood makes British nervous

It was announced that a meeting was to be held in a garden called Jallianwala Bagh, to protest against the government's actions. General Dyer took no measures to prevent the meeting. He reached the place soon after the meeting began and he took with him armored cars and troops. Without giving any warning he ordered, “Fire till the bullets are finished.” The soldiers fired 1600 rounds into that unarmed mass of people. Once a park, Jallianwala Bagh was now a scene of the most brutal massacre of hundreds. Now read on:

Hundreds of men, women, and children were butchered, though the official figures given were only 379 killed and 2000 wounded. Leaving the wounded and dying on the ground, the troops marched away. The name Jallianwala Bagh became synonymous with massacre. There were other even more shameful deeds done all over the Punjab. Indians were ordered to crawl on their hands and knees. General Dyer also ordered that in certain areas all Indians were to alight from vehicles and salute whenever they passed a British officer. At certain places men were stripped naked and flogged. Students and children were ordered to walk miles for roll call, to attend parades, and salute the British flag. Then there was the stripping and flogging of marriage parties, the censorship of communications, and cutting of water and electricity supplies to Indian families. The administration of General Dyer’s martial law created a reign of terror in the Punjab. C. F. Andrews, who had already reached the Punjab, wrote to Gandhi and begged him to come at once. Gandhi wanted to go, but his repeated requests for permission to visit the place were turned down by the Government. Finally, in October that year, the Viceroy permitted him to visit the Punjab, and Gandhi went. On his arrival at Lahore railway station, Gandhi found that almost the entire population of the city was there waiting for him. The Congress had appointed a committee to enquire into the atrocities committed in the Punjab. On his arrival in Lahore he was requested to join the committee. He started a slow but most methodical investigation of the incidents in the Punjab. Gandhi thus had the opportunity to know the Punjab and its people. The people flocked to him. They loved him and respected him. Jawaharlal Nehru, who was also there in the Punjab, realized that Gandhi was the leader of the masses. People were drawn to him because of his thoughts and deeds. Nehru saw the scientific accuracy with which Gandhi was conducting the enquiry. Gandhi’s report of the atrocities showed that the Government was trying to shield certain persons. He was never interested in taking revenge on anybody but he

Sponsored by Houston Arts Alliance in honor of Mahatma Gandhi Sesquicentennial Houston celebrations.

Mahatma Gandhi Week is being observed in Houston from September 27 to October 3, 2004. Various activities are being planned, including essay competitions for children, lectures, exhibitions, seminars, etc. This will be done in collaboration with several Houston area Indian and American cultural and religious organizations. For more information, call Atul Kothari at 713-785-3900 or visit www.mahatmagandhi library.org was shocked at the way the government sat silent when its own report was published. He was greatly moved by the sufferings of the people in the Punjab. He knew the extent of the atrocities which had been committed on the defenseless people. Gandhi now advised the people to not cooperate with the Government in every possible way. He advised them not to accept any of the honors offered by Britain, and requested those who had already received honors to return them. He wanted people to start a movement to boycott the law courts. He advised people not to buy any foreign goods. He wanted every effort to be made to persuade Indians not to serve the Government in any capacity. He called out students from the educational institutions. Gandhi’s influence on the Indian people was steadily growing. The old leaders, many of them with liberal policies, were vanishing from Indian politics. By the end of 1920 Gandhi was the undisputed leader and head of the Indian National Congress. The Congress was fighting for immediate Home Rule. Its method of fighting was nonviolent noncooperation with the government, and defying carefully selected laws at suitable times. Gandhi was very interested in Jawaharlal Nehru and his socialistic views. He was most impressed with the account given by Jawaharlal of his contacts with the peasants. Jawaharlal explained the difficulties the peasants were experiencing, particularly the high taxes they had to pay. The political situation in India grew worse. The Government became nervous. There was tension everywhere and amidst the suppressed people there was the danger of violence.

In spite of the hard attitude of the Government, Gandhi believed that England would soon right the wrong before it was too late. Jawaharlal was of the opinion that England would not change her policy unless she was forced to do so. Jawaharlal was right. Soon the Government started arresting the leaders and imprisoning them. The British were afraid to loosen their grip on India. On August 1, 1920, in a letter to Lord Chelmsford, the Viceroy. Gandhi gave the signal for a noncooperation campaign. Along with it he returned the Kaiser-i-Hind gold medal which had been awarded to him in 1915. In the columns of Young India Gandhi wrote in detail in defence of nonviolent noncooperation. With other leaders he travelled extensively addressing huge meetings and preaching the essentials of satyagraha. Everywhere the crowds welcomed him with great love and enthusiasm. Again and again he warned the people against violence. He abhorred mass fury. “If India has to get her freedom by violence,” he said, “let it be by the disciplined violence named war.” At the end of August the Gujarat Political Conference passed a noncooperation resolution and a special session of the Congress was held in Calcutta on September 4 to 9. The draft of the noncooperation resolution had been prepared by Gandhi. Gandhi was not sure how much support he would get at the Congress session. When he moved the resolution he said that he knew the resolution envisaged a policy which was different from the policy hitherto followed. “But,” he declared, “knowing this, I stand before you in fear of God and with a sense of duty to put this before you for your acceptance.” The special Congress session adopted the noncooperation plan as a means of attaining Swaraj. During the latter part of 1920 Gandhi advocated a triple boycott. He wanted an absolute boycott of the Government and all government institutions, including schools, colleges, and courts. If the people were free of these they could easily have their own schools, colleges, and courts, and the power of the British would collapse at once. There was much laughter and ridicule from the moderates and the supporters of British rule. But Gandhi paid no attention. — To be continued
