Pratham Houston’s past and present board members and guests at the Holiday Luncheon.

Pratham hosts Holiday Luncheon

Pratham Houston’s Holiday Luncheon 2019 on Friday, December 6th at The Junior League of Houston was a resounding success in its entirety. Under the capable leadership of Pratham Houston’s President, Asha Dhume, the event was truly entertaining and focused: “Give Women a Chance – Unleash their Potential.” A total amount of about $170,000 was raised towards Pratham Women’s Entrepreneurship and Vocational Programs. Master of Ceremonies Rekha Muddaraj, TV Anchor, KHOU 11 News welcomed the guests and invited Asha Dhume for her opening remarks. Asha thanked the audience for unconditionally supporting the cause and for their generosity in donating to Pratham. This being Asha’s last term as President, she thanked each and every supporter, volunteer and board member including Dr. Suneja, Brij Kathuria and Shital Patel who offered their unwavering support as well as Pratham Houston’s immediate past Presidents, Swatantra Jain, Dr. Marie Goradia and

Ash Shah, all three with whom she worked closely with during the past eight years. She also thanked her husband Pankaj and their two children for their encouragement and support. As she remarked: “Education is truly the biggest game changer that enables success in life for those who have the ability, but don’t have the resources. At the heart of Pratham’s amazing success, is the passionate desire to unleash the potential of every underprivileged child and youth in India.” Asha noted how Pratham USA was started over 20 years ago with the initial support of visionary and philanthropist, Vijay Goradia and has now grown into a large organization helping millions of underprivileged children in India. This 20th anniversary year honoring Vijay has truly been very special with fundraising history being created with a record collection earlier this year. Asha also emphasized that Pratham USA has earned the highest 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for eight consecutive years. See Pratham, Page 2

The grand finale, a spectacular fashion show coordinated by Sylvia Forsythe of Saks Fifth Avenue and produced by Lenny Matuszewski featuring exquisite jewelry by Dr. Amita Bhalla. Asha extended her heartfelt gratitude to Pratham Houston Advisory Board member, Poonam Mittal. Her family foundation, namely, the PANI Foundation, is single handedly funding two beauty schools this year, one in Assam and the other in Chattisgarh. She concluded by introducing the next President of the Houston chapter, Dhiren Sethia, a highly successful entrepreneur. Dhiren and his wife Anila have been passionate supporters of Pratham since its inception. She expressed her confidence that “in his own unique style, Dhiren will scale Pratham to much greater heights.” Keynote Speaker Lauren Levicki Courville, President, Dress for Success Houston, gave a powerful and enlightening talk that kept the audience engaged. Lauren observed that over the past 21 years, Dress for Success Houston has grown to 20 plus programs and more than 3700 women have been served so far this year. Through these programs, “We have the distinct honor of letting the women know that they are valuable, that they are seen and heard,” she said. Courville said that once a woman secures a job, they are invited to join the Professional Women’s Group (PWG) at no cost. “It’s an ongoing career education but most importantly it’s a networking support.” Just like Pratham’s programs empower women to be selfreliant, the Financial Literacy Course enables women to make financial decisions. “The 13 week financial literacy course seems intense and

overwhelming but I promise the value will be there at the end,” Courville said. She continued: “Like Pratham, we are not government funded and are run by the support of individuals, corporations and foundations that invest in our women”. In conclusion, Courville read an excerpt from Melinda Gates book ‘The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World’ that captures the essence of the need to empower women as a way to impact and uplift a community. Dr. Sapna Singh conducted an impactful pledge drive in her convincing and compassionate style urging guests to donate generously. Exciting raffle prizes enhancing the afternoon included a basket of Guerlain cosmetics from Saks Fifth Avenue, a handmade special necklace using clay, coral & freshwater pearls by Dr. Amita Bhalla and a wooden hand crafted clutch by Simran Kapoor of Treasure Trunk. The afternoon ended with President Asha Dhume handing out plaques as a token of appreciation to Keynote speaker Lauren Levicki Courville, Emcee Rekha Muddaraj and Co-chairs Shital Patel, Dr. Bharat Pothuri and Dr. Sapna Singh. The volunteer team did an outstanding job of making this event stand out as yet another year of success. Infusion 2019 : Magic, illusion & enchantment

STAFFORD: The much-anticipated Infusion 2019A Magical Bollywood Spectacular held in full vigor and galore at the St. Joseph’s Auditorium on Saturday, December 7, was quite avant-garde and unique. Infused Performing Arts has been entertaining audiences since the beginning of their musical journey, way back in 2009. The power-couple, founders and choreographers- Tina Bose & Kiron Kumar began Infused Performing Arts out of their passion and dedication for promoting Indian culture to students and audiences around USA. In just nine years, Infused Performing Arts has grown immensely, with studios across Houston, Sugar Land, Stafford & Pearland. This year’s mega-event, the ninth annual production from Infused Performing Arts, was a free event and was based on a magical Bollywood interpretation of the epic tale of Ramayan. The duo Tina-Bose-Kumar & Kiron Kumar choreographed and directed this spectacular affair. And it was nothing short of a star-studded epic Bollywood night, except that the stars here were the Infused Performing Arts Dance Company, students and dance moms. As the evening set in, electrifying performances were presented and these included various forms of dance that were complimented with rich costumes, extraordinary magical illusions, and remarkable stunts. Infused Performing Arts has been known for wooing their audiences by serving them an enchanting display of dance, infused with magic. And this show definitely had these sensational spices that flowed consistently through their memorable perfor-

mances. The story unfolded as dad, Sushil Varma narrated the epic tale of Ramayan with a twist to his daughter and friend, played by Nytza Yaseen & Ariana Abraham. The opening act of Contemporary Classical dance stunned everyone when all 25 dance company performers including the men performed classical Indian dance effortlessly. While Raav, played by Tinu Chacko and the beautiful ladies from the Dance Co. made temperatures soar with their Saki Saki performance, Ishare Tere and Ghungroo flaunted some modern twirls and sways on jazz and hiphop elements. An edge-of-the-seat act was exhibited by Forest Theme when Jedayu, played by Suman Mangu was pierced with an arrow along with graceful Kuchipudi performances displayed on a plate. This was followed by a performance that featured girls of various ages, spinning and whirling away to popular numbers, Koka Song, Sweet Tera Drama, Dhagala Lagali, and the twist on modern bhangra Wakhra Swag. Armed with props, led tubes, streamers, and cartwheels, the girls charmed everyone with their acts while the boys were full of energy with their acrobatic somersaults and more, on Hauli Hauli, Billionaire, and the Boot Song. It seemed like a competing performance, when some senior girls entered the stage and seized the audiences with their breathtaking Madhuri Medley, performed on the famous Aaja Nachle & Tabah Hogaye. Their energy was an absolute match with the boys’ with their lifts and splits on hiphop dance Strange Remix, Proper Patola & Taki Taki were testimony

to that. The duo dance by Sushil Varma & Vanshika Vipin to Odhani started the finale medley on a fiery note. Like always, the finales of Infused Performing Arts gets the entire audience on their feet, not only for a standing ovation, but also to shake a leg. And the finale on this day was no less. All 200 performers on stage swinging on Mera Wala dance and Chandigarh Mein brought the house down. This level of an exhilarating and intoxicating performance can always be experienced with Tina and Kiron’s team. The finale act featured an epic rendition of what seemed straight out of a Bollywood movie. The antagonist (Tinu) locked the heroine (Tina) in a box on stage, and pierced it with swords. When the box was opened in half, she

had magically vanished into thin air. The next moment, she was rescued by protagonist (Kiron) as he carefully removed each sword and opened the box and Tina was left unharmed. This act had the entire hall roaring with thunderous applause and led to the epic battle between Raav & Ram. This amazing show would be impossible without the help of sponsors, Brask Inc., Jom Stars, Priyan Jacob, Blo Dry Bar (Sugar Land), New Millennium Montessori/Unique Minds, & Aju Thomas. Scripts and dialogues were by Yaksha Bhatt, while the lighting was under the supervision of Jee Tom. The sound recording of all the actors’ voices was by Suman Mangu and special mention must be made of the narrator & Raav’s voice-over by Aurko Dutta.

After the awe-inspiring show, an elated Tina and Kiron thanked the audience for supporting their shows in all these years. They also made a special mention about the parents who trusted and supported them with their children. The shows of Infused Performing Arts are always looked forward to and their next staging will be the Rockets vs. Chicago Bulls Halftime performance on March 21, 2020 for the ninth year in a row. To participate, Infused Performing Arts is conducting auditions for experienced dancers aged 7 & above, to perform for halftime on March 21, 2020. Hindu Social Mixer draws singles from far and near

By SANCHALI BASU The HinduShakti organization was successful not only in drawing singles from the greater Houston area, but also from around the country to mingle at its Social Mixer event on Dec 7, at Kirby Ice House. The event consisted of a round robin meet-up of bachelors and bachelorettes of age 26 to 36. A brief one-on-one tetea-tete was arranged only for Hindu participants, followed by a mixer. The turnout was respectable and it was interesting and encouraging to see participants from Illinois, Michigan and Florida proving, “One can travel the world for love.” Incidentally the gender ratio was equitable. HinduShakti is an off shoot of the Hindu Vivah organization. This is the 4th event being held after two in Austin and one in Dallas. These events are held in top class golf courses, clubs and upscale restaurants. This time around, the organizers picked a sports bar which turned out to be an ideal central location for everyone. HinduShakti (www.hindushakti.org) is a US based community support organization whose charter is to facilitate the meeting of Hindu singles for the purpose of matrimony. It is engaged mainly in the arranging of meetings where Hindu singles get a chance to mingle with like-minded suitors who are ready for marriage. These meets help break the ice and introduce Hindu singles to each other, at which point HinduShakti’s work is done, and these singles are left to explore and select a life partner from amongst the singles they meet at the events. Hindu singles are asked not to use these events to date for dating’s sake. The services are meant to be used by those that are serious and contemplating marriage. A nominal fee was charged from all the attendees. Light refreshments of pizza, chicken wings and a drink were provided. Participants seemed to enjoy the format and several exchanged phone numbers for future communication. Research shows that in-person meets have a much higher chance of connecting with a suitable partner for marriage; than do online matching/dating sites based strictly on professed personal profiles. HinduShakti is planning on holding more such events in Dallas, Atlanta and New York in the upcoming months and one in Houston on February 15. The event was very well organized and many participants stopped by the Volunteers’ desk to compliment the event coordinators. They were all praise for the wonderful efforts put together by a great team of volunteers. One participant who had just moved from Canada even mentioned that he has not seen anything like this in Canada. Organizers who helped make this event possible are Dharminder Dargan, Sangeeta Dargan, Mallika Dargan, Deepak Bhatti, Shelly Bhatti, Abha Grover, Sahil Tomar, Disha Jhangiani, Vinay Chandrakar, and Sanchali Basu. HinduVivah (www.hinduvivah.org) is a US based non-profit organization which will continue to hold such events in future. Stay tuned for all upcoming events. Visit www.hindushakti.org and www.hinduvivah.org for future events.

Anshuman: Brilliant, multi-faceted homage to the Sun

By SESHADRI KUMAR Anshuman is the name ascribed to the Sun in Indian scriptures. Houston’s noted dance director Dr. Rathna Kumar presented a dance ensemble titled “Anshuman,” Homage to the Sun God, at the Kaplan Theater on Nov. 30. A string of classical dance numbers, with enchanting songs and music, colorful costumes and backdrops with lighting, aesthetically brought on stage the Sun, with all its splendor, glory and power. The dancers, by their sublime body movements and expressions, created a multi- dimensional effect of the cosmic cause and nature, the dawn, the progressive day light and the graceful evening easing into the night. The poetic imagination, lilting lyrics combined with the spiritual chants in praise of the Sun rendered a kaleidoscopic view of the Sun, who provides the world with warmth, light and rain, sustains the planet and destroys, only to rejuvenate again. The sun fulfilled the functions of the Hindu Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the creator, the sustainer and the dissolver. The opening invocation in praise of Surya was enacted by Dr. Rathna Kumar herself depicting the above mentioned attributes of the Sun, through a powerful Sanskrit mantra, Surya Stuti. Then, Salutation to Dawn, followed with Poet Kalidasa’s description of the beginning of the day, bringing the promise of hope to a new day by the Lord of the Heavens, Sun was depicted. Carnatic composer Muthuswami Dikhsitar’s Suryamurthe offered a paean to Surya, the consort of Chhaya (shadow and darkness) whose radiance illuminates the universe, making the planets worship the Sun in adulation. The dancers then performed, Suryanamaskaram, a structured yoga step offering salutations to the sun with a physical exercise. Another salutation to the sun was based on Tamil poet Subramanya Bharathi’s verses which says the rays of the Sun falling on the ocean waves makes each wave look like an eye looking up in adoration. The poet imag-

ines the Sun looking at Mother Earth with love, while she blushes in shyness. The dancers graphically recreated the imagery. In the same poet’s description of the sun’s effects on all eight directions of the universe, causing rain and cooling the hot earth, thunder and lightning preceding rains, the frenetic dance of Nature was showcased. Destruction and rejuvenation, floods, drought, wildfires, loss, harvest and celebrations in gratitude of the sun, as per different regional traditions of India were presented through different dance forms during the Pongal festival, Sankranthi, Bihu and Baisakhi. As shadows lengthen and the sun is waning, the beautiful, imaginative Sandhya Sundari, the evening beauty, with a veil meanders across the sky, gracefully setting the mood for the night, in the poetic words of Suryakant Tripathi Nirala. The concluding item depicted Aditya Hridayam, considered a powerful prayer. When Rama was in despair, unable to defeat Ravana, Sage Agastya is believed to have rendered this mantra and by reciting this, Rama achieved victory over Ravana. The 90-minute dance performance choreographed by Dr. Rathna Kumar left lingering images in the mind of the audience, for a long time. Dr. Kumar’s 35th production, featuring Venugopal Joysula, Archana Sharma, Vidya Madhubala and members of the Anjali Dance Company, was made possible by the City of Houston’s Houston Arts Alliance. Seetha Ratnakar, with her

concept, costume and lighting, infused life into the show, while R. K. Srikumar’s music,

She delighted the audience with her introductory rendition of Borisho Dhara Majhe based on Rag Bhairavi, and many popular numbers including Majhe Majhe Tabo Dekha Pai, Jodi Tare Nai Chini Go, Aaj Jemon Kore Gaiche Akash and ended with a beautiful rendition of Tobu Mone Rekho… She was ably accompanied by Raja Banga on Tabla, Biplab Samadder on the violin, Namita Raychaudhury on harmonium and Bidyut Ghosh on mandira. ANALYSIS

Cloud on citizenship

The CAA has nothing to do with Indian citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliation. It is an attempt to help persecuted minorities who have been victims in neighbouring Islamic nations The statements of six Chief Ministers belonging to parties opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), that they “will not allow” the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in their States, poses an open and grave challenge to the Constitution and to India’s unity and integrity. The opposition to the amended Act began with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Soon thereafter, Kamal Nath, Bhupesh Baghel and Amarinder Singh, the Congress Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Punjab joined in, followed by Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala and Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi. All of them have said that they “will not allow” the amended Act to be implemented in their States. These statements smack of recklessness and do not augur well for the preservation of national unity and integrity. The CAA grants citizenship to six non-Muslim communities from Pakistan, Bangla-

desh and Afghanistan, who are victims of religious persecution in these Islamic nations. They are identified as Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians, who fled these nations and entered India until December 31, 2014. The amendment says they will not be treated as illegal immigrants any more. The legislative powers of the Centre and the States are clearly demarcated in the Union List, the State List and the Concurrent List in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. Entry 17 in the Union List says, “Citizenship, naturalisation and aliens,” meaning that all matters pertaining to these issues are wholly within the legislative competence of the Union Government. Under the Constitution, no State has the right to reject a law made by the Centre within the legislative sphere allotted to it. Speaking on Centre-State relations, BR Ambedkar had told the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1948, that “the basic principle of federalism is that the legislative and executive authority is partitioned between the Centre and the States, not by any law to be made by the Centre but by the

not face criminal proceedings even if they did not have passports and other valid documents. Their entry and stay were regularised. Thereafter, the Central Government gave these people the facility of long-term visas. The amendment became necessary because despite these notifications, these people were still “illegal migrants” as per the definition in the citizenship Act. Until this amendment is made, these people cannot apply for Indian citizenship. The real issue is not why such a law has been brought in now. The question to ask is: Why was it not done earlier? Why did India, largely under the Congress’ rule since independence, turn a blind eye to the plight of adherents of Indic religions and Christians in these Islamic nations? Further, why has the Congress, which has encouraged Bangladeshi Muslim migrants and used them as a vote-bank all these years, now protesting over this law. The attitude of the Congress is in line with its Muslim appeasement policy even though it is giving it diminishing returns. This party, which ruled the country for much of the post-independence era, is unable to digest its marginalisation and is adopting an “after me the deluge” kind of an attitude. The only Constitutional option available to the opponents of the amended law is to challenge it in the Supreme Court, which has been done. When the Congress encourages its Chief Ministers to openly declare that they will not implement a Central law, the party is playing with fire. It will be wholly responsible for the consequences. Constitution itself. This is what the Constitution does.” Those who are opposing the amendment argue that it violates Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before law and the equal protection of the laws. In their view, the exclusion of Muslims from these three nations constitutes an infringement of this Article. Several individuals are already knocking on the doors of the Supreme Court, questioning the vires of the amendment and one will have to await the opinion of the apex court in the matter. This law has nothing to do with Indian citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliation and those who oppose it are aware of this. This amendment does not deny the protection of Article 14 to any citizen of India. It appears the argument against the amendment is that it infringes on the rights of Muslim citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Is any nation obliged to ensure Constitutional guarantees to the citizens of other nations? Second, while the amendment speaks of six communities, they are actually a class of

persecuted people, not merely adherents of certain religions. There are also decisions of the Supreme Court that Article 14 provides for reasonable classification. The Centre’s decision to reach out to these communities must be welcomed for two reasons. First, India has always been hospitable to persecuted communities for millennia. The arrival of Zoroastrians in the 12th century is an example of that tradition. In recent times, after the Chinese moved into Tibet, India saw a flood of Tibetan refugees numbering over 80,000 in 1959-60. Thereafter, there has been a steady flow of Tibetan refugees into India and the Union Government made special provisions for their settlement in Dharamshala and in other parts of the country, including Karnataka. Given the manner in which India handled the Tibetan refugee issue, one would presume this would be the template to accommodate those coming in from the Islamic nations. In other words, they will be accommodated in other parts of the country. The fears that these people will be a burden on Assam is, therefore, misplaced. Since this amendment talks about a cut-off date of December 31, 2014, the fear of fresh migrations is baseless. The benefits of this amendment will not be available to those who cross into India in future. Further, it is not realised that this amendment is consequential to a couple of notifications issued by the Central Government in 2015 and 2016. The first notification said that individuals from these six persecuted communities, who entered India before December 31, 2014, would be exempted from the penal provisions of the Passport Act and The Foreigners Act. This meant that such people would

CAA protests updates | 21 people injured in Seelampur violence: police

Political parties and other organisations opposing the NRC and Citizenship Amendment Act have called for a hartal in Kerala on December 17. Protest against the amendments to Citizenship Act continued on Tuesday, in the northeast as well as the rest of the country. Kerala, which showed a rare unity between UDF and LDF, is gearing up for daylong strike. The hartal has been called by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and allied organisations under the aegis of the Joint Action Council. However, the mainstream parties haven’t supported the strike. Twenty-one people, including 12 policemen and six civilians, were injured in violence that erupted during a protest against the amended Citizenship Act in Delhi’s Seelampur on Tuesday, police said. According to a police officer, two FIRs have also been registered at Seelampur and Jafrabad police stations in connection with the violence. Three personnel of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were injured, the officer said. Angry protestors torched several motor bikes, pelted stones at police personnel and damaged buses and a police booth in Northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area. - PTI Will take back Bangladeshi citizens staying in India illegally if evidence provided: Dhaka official An advisor to Bangladeshi

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the country will take back any citizen of the neighbouring nation staying in India illegally, if evidence is provided. The issue of amended Citizenship Act is an internal matter of India, Advisor to Ms. Hasina on international affairs, Gauhar Rizvi, said. “We will take back any Bangladeshi citizen staying in India illegally. But India has to prove that,” Mr. Rizvi told reporters here. He said Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Buddhists coexist peacefully in Bangladesh. - PTI India rejects Pakistan National Assembly’s resolution on amended citizenship law India on Tuesday strongly rejected a resolution adopted by the Pakistan National Assembly on the amended citizenship law, calling it a poorly disguised effort to divert attention from Islamabad’s “appalling treatment” and “persecution” of its religious minorities . In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs Ministry said the resolution was a thinly-veiled attempt by Pakistan to further its false narrative on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. “It seeks to provide justification for Pakistan’s unrelenting support for cross-border terrorist activities in India. We are confident that such attempts will fail,” it said. Pakistan’s Parliament on Monday unanimously passed a resolution terming India’s citizenship amendment law against bilateral agreements and asked New Delhi to revoke the “discriminatory” clauses in it. -PTI

Delhi court sends 10 arrested for CAA protests to judicial custody till Dec. 31 A Delhi court on Tuesday sent 10 persons, arrested in connection with the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) near Jamia Millia Islamia University here, to judicial custody till December 31. Metropolitan Magistrate Kamran Khan earlier sent six of the 10 arrested people — Mohammad Hanif, Danish alias Jafar, Sameer Ahmed, Dilshad, Shareef Ahmed, Mohd Danish — to judicial custody after police sought their custodial interrogation for 14 days. The court later sent four others — Yunus Khan, Jumman, Anal Hassan, Anwar Kala — to judicial custody. Police had on Monday arrested them for their alleged involvement in the violence near Jamia Millia Islamia University here, it had said, adding that none of them were students. -PTI Tension in some areas around AMU, 26 people released Tension gripped some localities adjoining the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus on Tuesday, as crowds started assembling at crossings and raised slogans against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. But there was marked improvement from the situation prevailing after clashes between the AMU students and the police on Sunday. The 26 people arrested after the earlier clashes were released late on Monday night. On Tuesday, shopkeepers in Jamalpur and Dodhpur downed shutters as tensions erupted briefly.

A police force was rushed to the spots and the situation eventually defused. “With the help of the local community leaders and announcements from mosques, we managed to persuade the protesters that their concerns would be conveyed to the government and that their interests would not be served by taking the law into their own hands,” SP Abhishek said. Protests were also held at the highly-sensitive Upper Court area in the old city. Earlier, 26 people, including eight students, arrested in connection with the violence at the varsity and the surrounding areas were released on personal bonds. “Out of the 26 people arrested from the AMU campus on Sunday night, only eight are students of AMU. The rest are outsiders,” SSP Akash Kulhari told PTI. Proctor of AMU Professor Afifullah Khan said, “In view of the tense situation on the AMU campus and the surrounding areas, we had approached the DM to release the arrested students as a special case and this was done by the administration.” -PTI Sonia accuses Modi government of “shutting down” people’s voices Congress president Sonia Gandhi accused the Modi government of “shutting down” people’s voices and bringing legislations which are not acceptable to them. After leading a delegation of Opposition leaders to President Ram Nath Kovind to protest the police action against Jamia university students and also against amendments to the Citizenship Act, Ms. Gandhi

told reporters that the situation was “very serious“. Joined by leaders of various parties, she said they were very anguished at the manner in which police dealt with peaceful protesters exercising their democratic rights, and added that police personnel entered women’s hostels in Jamia Millia Islamia and “mercilessly” beat up students. - PTI Five students held for graffiti against Citizenship Act Five students of the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly making objectionable graffiti, which included the word ‘Modi’, to protest the new Citizenship Act, police said. The students, from the University’s Fine Arts faculty, made the ‘swastika’ sign with black spray colour in place of the letter ’o’ in the word ‘Modi’, a police official said. Search was underway for two other students who were absconding, he said. The students selected places like the police headquarters, Kala Ghoda Circle, the Fatehgunj pavilion wall and the wall of a hostel near Rosary School to make the graffiti in order to attract the attention of the public, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2), Sandeep Chaudhary said. The wrote “no CAB Modi” and made the ‘swastika’ sign in place of the letter ‘o’ in the word ‘Modi’, the police said. “They used slogans with certain symbols in their graffiti to intentionally hurt religious sentiments of a particular community and affect public peace and cause riots against members of a community. They also damaged public property.”

By M.K.Sriram Sri Meenakshi Temple in Pearland had a grand celebration of its Maha Kumbhabhishekam from Dec.1 to Dec. 8. Kumbhabhishekam is the joyous celebration of each phase of the growth of a temple, the crowning celebration of the hard work and achievement by the devotees. Sri Meenakshi Temple had its first Kumbhabhishekam in August 1979 after the first installation of Prasanna Ganapathy was completed and consecrated. The Maha Kumbhabhishekams, are performed only once in 12 years. This year marks the fourth such consecration, after 1982, 1994 and 2006. Several other Kumbhabhishekams were performed in between as new deities were consecrated or the sanctums were renovated. This is the temple’s 40th year and the 12th consecration ceremony, called Ashtabandhana Kumbhabhishekam. Ashtabandhanam is the process of affixing the idol to its pedestal using a red clay-like organic paste made with 8 ingredients of herbals with ancient acclaimed values. A new layer of Ashtabandhanam is laid for all deities before the Kumbabhishekam and is believed to rejuvenate the idols for 12 years. Rajathabandhanam is using pure silver strips around the base during Ashtabandhanam that the deity is held in place over the Peetam. This one is significant that it is also the Rajathabandhana Ashtabandhana Mahakumbhabhishekam. T he 2019 Kumbhabhishekam is very special because for the very first time the Rajathabandhanam is installed for the main deities. The preliminary pujas and homams were conducted from Dec 1st till Dec 4th, at the Ganesh Temple. From Thursday, Dec 5th onwards the rituals were started at the two large Yaga Sala that were specially built within the main temple quadrangle. The divine power of the five main deities i.e. Ganesha, Sundareswara, Meenakshi, Venkateswara and Padmavathy were temporarily invoked (aavahanam) in Kalasams in a ceremony called Kalakarshanam. These kalasams were then installed at the respective Yaga salas. An array of learned priests from various parts of the US complemented the resident temple priests in performing the six kala pujas starting from Thursday, Dec 5th evening till Sunday Dec 8th. Very powerful veda mantrams were chanted during each of the six kala yagams. At the end of each session,

the devotees were treated to a divine experience when the priests performed Shodasa upacharams. This included chanting from the four vedas, mantras, devotional songs and hymns that had been created by the Nayanars. The music of the traditional pipe and drum (nadaswaram & thavil) created an extraordinary ambience, and it felt like being transported to the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. At the culmination of the final yaga sala homam on Sunday Dec. 8th, the divine power for the various deities were transferred back to the idols in a process called sparshahuthi when the kalasam waters were taken to the garba graha of the various deities and abhishekams were performed three times for the three sections of the deity. Under perfectly blue skies wth the temperature in the 70’s, the main kalasams were then taken to the vimanams and holy waters poured over the Kalasams, simultaneously on six vimanas at precisely 11:05 a.m. The holy water was infused with the most hallowed water from Lake Manasarovar, specially collected and brought by a devotee. These waters were sprinkled on the devotees. Following this, abhishekams to all the four main deities were performed with the holy waters in the kalasams from the yaga sala. Thus concluded the Kumbhabhishekam. According to traditions, the first function that follows a Kumbhabhishekam is Kalyana utsavam. The celestial wedding for Lord Sundareswara and Sri Meenakshi, as well as Lord Venkateswara and Sri Padmavathy was conducted in the main temple. This auspicious day also happened to be Kaisika Dwadasi, so very talented local musicians performed during the wedding ceremonies and the whole temple was awash with divine vibrations. The essence of Hindu philosophy is that one’s own body and mind is a divine temple where the supreme Brahman resides. So, when a thousand devotees gather at the temple for such a heavenly event, the divinity multiplies a million times and engulfs everyone. When the holy waters are poured over the Kumbham at the top of the temple Vimanas, it also permeates and saturates our body and spirit and reinvigorates the bhakti, removing ignorance from us. Without a doubt, this experience can be very transformative and take us a step closer to self realization, which is God realization. Hundreds of devotees waited patiently in line to climb to the vimanas for darshan of the kumbhas, following strict safe-

-ty precautions. It was indeed a very blissful and extraordinary experience for all. The concluding part of the event was the grand procession where all the deities were taken on their respective vahanas including the grand silver ratham. This was followed by the final arathi. More than a thousand devotees were treated to a lunch prepared by temple staff and volunteers. The whole event was organized by the temple Board under the leadership of Chairman Dr Padmini Nathan. The temple and visiting priests brought authenticity to the conduct of this event strictly per agama sastras.

The silpis worked day and night to erect the various structures such as the yaga salas, and to decorate them. The temple staff worked with great dedication taking care of all the details and procurement of materials. Scores of volunteers helped making flower garlands for the pujas, throughout the week. Another set of volunteers helped with cutting the vegetables for the grand feast. A group of ritwiks chanted Sri Rudram, yet another chanted the Sahasranamams. The next 45 days after a Kumbhabhishekam is called the mandalam period. It is believed that, those who missed the Kumbhabhishekam event can visit the temple and worship during this period, to get the blessings of the deities.

Court dismisses plea challenging Centre’s notification according minority status to 5 communities

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging the validity of the Centre’s 26-year-old notification according minority status to five communities -- Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis, saying religion must be considered pan-India. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde refused to entertain the PIL filed by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking laying of guidelines to accord minority status based on state-wise population of a community. “Religion must be considered pan-India. What is the problem if Muslims are majority in Kashmir and minority elsewhere in the country,” the bench which also comprised Justice B R Gavai and Surya Kant said while dismissing the PIL. Upadhyay, in his PIL, had sought framing of guidelines to grant minority status to a religious community based on their population in a particular state and claimed that Hindus which are in minority in eight states, are deprived of minority benefits. “Languages are restricted state wise. Religions don’t have state borders. We have to take a pan India approach. In Lakshadweep, the Muslims follow the Hindu law,” the bench said. It took note of submissions of Attorney General K K Venugopal, who was asked to assist the court, that there have been judgments of the apex court which say that minority can be decided based on all India population of a religious group. During the brief hearing, the bench asked senior advocate Mohan Parasaran, appearing for Upadhyay, to show the judgments where it has been held that state-wise population can be considered for granting minority status. It asked as to how can there be guidelines to decide this and observed, “I don’t think we should entertain this”. The bench said languages have been used to create states and it is not the case with religion and hence minority status cannot be granted to a community based on state-wise population. In his petition, the BJP leader had said Hindus, who are a majority community as per national data, are a minority in several north-eastern states and in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the Hindu community is deprived of benefits which are available to minority communities in these states, the plea had said.

Destruction of public property must stop: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court will take up on Tuesday the alleged police atrocities on protesting students at the Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University on Sunday. Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, however, said all sides must first stop the violence over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, because the court would not be “bullied” into hearing the matter amid continuing mayhem. “It does not matter who is doing it. All this, including the destruction of public property, including buses, must stop,” he said. “We will decide the issue in a cool atmosphere. We are not going to be bullied.” Senior advocates Indira Jaising, Colin Gonzalves and Salman Khursheed had assembled at the Chief Justice’s court at 10.30am during the customary “mention time” and sought urgent hearing of the police violence on the two campuses. If the protest, violence, destruction of public property is going on, we will not hear the matter,” the bench, which included Justices Bhushan Gavai and Surya Kant, said. Jaising said the students were innocent and the police had entered the university illegally and beaten them up. “We want rioting to stop before we hear the matter,” Justice Bobde said. “But no one can stop a peaceful demonstration,” Jaising argued. “Rioting is being engineered and buses are being burnt by the police, who are putting the blame on the students.” Policemen had entered the Jamia campus in Delhi with-

out permission on Sunday evening and gone on the rampage, thrashing students and beating a woman BBC reporter, students and university officials have said. The police had barged into AMU late at night and used batons and tear gas on students protesting against the amended citizenship law. She said: “We need an investigation and someone to account for the violence.” Jaising suggested a committee of retired Supreme Court judges be appointed to probe the police assault. But Justice Bobde said the police could not alone have unleashed the violence. “Just because you are a student, you don’t have the right to disturb peace and indulge in violence,” he said. The court later decided to take the matter up on Tuesday and said interested parties should file their petitions on the subject. The bench also said it would consider taking up on Wednesday a batch of petitions challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, after senior counsel Abhishek Singhvi requested urgent hearing of one such plea from Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. At least 13 other people or organisations have challenged the law as unconstitutional. Narendra Modi PM asks the party and its allies to accord citizenship to all citizens of Pakistan Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday dared the

Congress and its allies to accord citizenship to all the citizens of Pakistan, and restore the provisions under Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, diluted by his government. Sharpening his attack on the Opposition over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 at an election rally at Barhait in Sahebganj district of Jharkhand, Mr. Modi said, “I challenge the Congress and all its allies that if they have guts, they should make an open announcement that they are ready to accord citizenship to all citizens of Pakistan.” “Moreover, if the Congress has the courage, it should announce it will restore Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Modi has abrogated Article 370. Bring the provisions back if you can,” he said. “The Congress is misleading people. Further, if they have the guts, they should also make a declaration on removing the law enacted against triple talaq. The Congress should accept the challenge,” Mr. Modi said. The Prime Minister accused the Congress and its allies of spreading lies about the CAA and instilling fear in Indian Muslims. “I want to assure you that the CAA will not affect any citizen of India of any religion. Nobody should worry about it. This Act is only for those who have faced years of persecution outside and have no other place to go except India,” Mr. Modi said.
