AIA HOUSTON SAND CASTLE COMPETITION, MAY 31 The 28th Annual AIA Houston Sand castle Competition will take place Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at East Beach in Galveston. This event is free and open to the public. Galveston Parks Board parking fee is $10 per car — cash only. The schedule of events include Sand Castle Building from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; judging from 3-4:30 p.m. and an awards ceremony from 4:30-5 p.m. For more than two decades, Houston area architects, designers, engineers and contractors have taken their tools to East Beach in Galveston for one of the world’s largest amateur sand castle competitions. The Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) sponsors this annual contest. On the day of the event, teams stretch along the beach sculpting sand piles with their eyes (and shovels) set on winning the prestigious Golden Bucket Award. Judging is rated on originality of concept, artistic execution of the concept, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. In addition to the Golden Bucket, awards are given in eight different themed categories as well as for best team T-shirt design, best team signage, best costume, and public favorite. TEXAS MASTERS SERIES: SANDIE ZILKER AT HCCC, BEGINNING MAY 30 This summer, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) will present a solo exhibition by Houston metalsmith and educator, Sandie Zilker, the fifth artist to be featured in HCCC’s Texas Masters Series. The exhibit will be on display May 30-Sept. 7. An opening reception will be held May 30 from 5:308 p.m. The Houston native joins the roster of former Texas Masters — Harlan Butt, Cindy Hickok, Rachelle Thiewes, and Piero Fenci — nominated by their peers and recognized for their roles as career artists in Texas who have made a significant impact on the field of craft. As the 2014 Texas Master, Zilker’s work is featured in this solo show, and she will serve as one of three jurors for the CraftTexas 2016 biennial exhibition at HCCC. As evidenced by her jewelry, Zilker is no stranger to experimentation in color, contrast, texture, pattern and form. Using the body as a frame of reference, she pulls from elements of illusion and surprise to elevate adornment to its fullest potential. Each piece is packed with personality, increasing the wearer’s senses and creating a unique relationship between wearer and object. Zilker’s exhibition at HCCC serves as a retrospective of her jewelry work over the past four decades. The show includes an exploration by the artist of newer technologies, including video, as well as installation. HCCC is located at 4848 Main St. For information, visit crafthouston.org.

H A P P E N I N G S THE CENTER FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES OFFERS COUNSELING SERVICES The Center for Children and Families is a Cy-Hope Counseling Clinic that opened in January to offer counseling, training, and consultation on a variety of topics to anyone working with or raising children. The Center includes work with children as young as 18 months, and also offers counseling for adolescents and families. The Center has counselors trained in play therapy to help children work through their life struggles. Play therapy allows children a chance to play out their feelings in a safe place, while building a safe relationship with the therapist. This relationship, along with expressing feelings through play, gives them the opportunity to build confidence and not be tied down by what has happened to them. Adolescents are counseled with an honest, compassionate approach to create a strong therapeutic relationship with each teenager. Sometimes therapy needs to involve the entire family. Family group therapy helps people form a bond, work on managing conflict, and learn new ways of communication. Additionally, The Center offers speakers to groups that want information on parenting skills, discipline, working with special needs children, teenage issues, or family stress. Speaking engagements are typically 1-3 hours long, and are used to help educate, train, and support those working with or raising child. For more in-depth educational programs, The Center has programs for parents, families and teens that provide more than just an overview of a topic. The Center is currently not accepting insurance but is willing to give clients a form to submit for reimbursement. A sliding scale is available on a case-by-case basis. For more information, call 713-466-1360 or visit cy-hopecounseling.org.

Record Crowds at Bridgeland Make World History Photos by John EvErEtt

Setting a new record for bird-calling at NatureFest

his year’s Nature Fest in Bridgeland was one for the record books — literally — as crowds enjoyed a lively menagerie of creatures, characters and cuisines and set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® title for the most people bird-calling. More than 10,000 people attended Nature Fest this year — another record-breaker — and 994 called the northern cardinal for the world record tweet feat. The previous record was 801 people making a simultaneous bird call, set in 2011. “With an array of stage shows, strolling entertainers and nature-themed activities, Nature Fest has always been a world-class event,” said Peter Houghton, Bridgeland’s vice president of master planned communities. “And now Nature Fest event goers will go down in history as setting a new world record.” In addition to the record attempt, event goers were able to meet lemurs, kangaroos, movie-star monkeys and other exotic animals with Staples Safari Zoo. Wildly talented performers with Circus Safari entertained crowds, as did The Crocodile Encounter and Birds of Prey. Austin Bike Zoo made its debut at Nature Fest this year, mixing puppetry and mechanics to create pedal-powered animal art. Pony and camel rides, bubble runners, arts and crafts, bounce houses and a birthday celebration for community mascot Bridgeland Bill gave crowds plenty of ways to monkey around. Nearly 20 gourmet food trucks satisfied all appetites. Entrance into Nature Fest was free; however, a few activities required a small donation benefiting Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County and the nonprofit Staples Safari Zoo. Approximately $3,000 was raised for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity and another $4,800 will go toward the care and rehabilitation of Staple Safari Zoo’s more than 120 rescued animals.l

T

It was all cheers after a crowd of 994 set a new world record for the most simultaneous bird calls. Celebrating were Lona Shipp, marketing manager for Bridgeland wearing the Nature Fest T-shirt; Sara Wilcox, with Guinness World Records North America; Gary Clark, nature columnist with the Houston Chronicle who led the bird call attempt; and wife Kathy Clark, a nature photographer. ❖ Sariah Gilmore, 4, enjoys the many childfriendly activities at Bridgeland’s nature fest. ❖ Nature Fest event goers were introduced to a variety of exotic animals, including Serina, an Aplomado falcon with the Birds of Prey attraction. ❖ Caden Schmadi, 7, shows no fear as he walks around the Nature Fest audience with a rose-haired tarantula and scorpion on his shirt.

By Kelly Foss, MyCarData.com

JEEP PATRIOT | Starting price: $16,100 hen Jeep first introduced the Patriot and its fraternal twin the Compass in 2007, it began a new trend as compact, front wheel drive crossover SUV’s. The Patriot was presented as the traditional boxy Jeep-like entry of the duo while the Compass was the stylish city slicker. Now seven years later, though coming from the same root stock, the two continue to go their separate ways. Notwithstanding the facelifts, Botox injections and tummy tucks that the Compass has undergone, the traditional Jeep-looking Patriot has kept its original look and continues to significantly outsell its sibling. The original concept of having a unibody constructed vehicle with a 4 cylin-

der engine, front wheel drive and a CVT transmission wearing a Jeep badge caused a disturbance in the Jeep force. How could anything so car-like dare to display the word “Jeep” on its fender? Could it legitimately be considered a “Jeep”? Well as it turns out the Patriot really is a Jeep and though it can’t go rock crawling with a Wrangler, it can get dirty and is “Trail Rated.” Patriots are powered by either a 2.0 or a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine which connects to either a 5 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive is standard, but if you need to drive off of paved roads or in the snow, two different 4 wheel drive options are available.

HONDA ACCORD HYBRID Starting price: $21,600 onda introduced its ninth-generation Accord in 2013. The Accord is a perennial top seller in the midsize sedan class and has been on Car and Driver’s 10 Best vehicle list a record 28 times. Faithful buyers love their Accords and rightfully so. I recently tested the new hybrid version of the new Accord. My test car was the top-of-the-line Touring model and had a sticker price of $35,695. Honda was the car company that actually introduced hybrids to our fair shores. In 1999 the bullet-shaped Insight made quite a statement. In fact,

My test vehicle, a mid-trim level Latitude, was equipped with the most common combination, the 2.4 liter engine with front wheel drive and automatic transmission. The vehicle has more than enough power and would get an indicated 32 mpg on the highway and averaged 26.4 mpg in a week of mixed city/highway driving. Admittedly, the Patriot is boxy, but the benefit of the boxiness of the car is a large interior relative to its size. Entry and exit is simple. The cargo area is roomy and easily accessible. The rear seat leg and head room is generous and the seat backs fold flat with the pull of a web strap. The Patriot offers options like leather clad power seats, navigation and Jeep’s wireless UConnect technology, but don’t expect to find radar cruise control, lane departure warning and cross traffic alert. For modern city living, it’s actually an excellent sized vehicle. It’s small enough for effortless city driving, it handles and drives well, yet it’s large enough to carry four people and their stuff with ease. The Patriot still follows the same mission plan that it was given when it was created. It’s a basic, unpretentious vehicle. It’s not stylish or sexy. It’s not particularly high tech or leading edge. But it’s useful, pleasant to drive, easy to live with, comfortable, versatile and not too expensive. And if you get the 4x4, be reassured that it can handle any mountain or snowdrift that you may encounter here in Houston.

in January of this year I encountered an original in a parking lot still being used as a daily driver. According to the owner it had almost 400,000 miles on it! Whereas early on in hybrid vehicle development, Toyota settled on one common design and has sold over one million of it in the U.S., Honda has tried a variety of technologies with varying degrees of success. The new hybrid drive in the Accord is their latest iteration of the technology. It uses a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine and then combines the electric motor drive to round out the package. The EPA has given the car an astonishingly high 50 mpg city, 45 highway and a combined 47 mpg fuel economy rating, and that in a hefty 3,600 pound sedan. In my week of driving the car I averaged 44.7 which is below the EPA number but is so far above its competitors that it doesn’t matter. The Accord gets its high fuel economy because the powertrain is constantly optimizing itself to use electric power as much as possible and use the gas engine as little as possible. That being the case, in the background it’s constantly balancing the three drive modes — Engine Drive, Hybrid Drive and EV — (the latter is pure electric mode) in order to get optimum fuel economy. It’s so seamless that you really can’t tell which mode you’re in and it doesn’t matter anyhow. The new Accord is a very fine car. The exterior styling is very engaging. The car looks more expensive than it is and has presence. Similarly the interior is also styled very nicely. There are more hard plastic surfaces than I’d like but everything functions very well and the interior feels good. The space is comfortable and has room for full-sized occupants. Hybrid cars sacrifice some of their trunk space to make room for the hybrid battery and the Accord is no exception. The driving dynamic of the car is also commendable. The big Honda corners well, rides well and is quiet inside. So all you know is that you’re driving down the highway in this very nice roomy sedan getting an indicated 48 miles per gallon of fuel economy and emitting no pollutants! How can that be? Modern technology and those clever engineers at Honda have pulled it off again. Visit MyCarData.com for more information on these models.l

e’ve all driven through lovely neighborhoods in the Houston area and admired the big lots, wonderful architecture and inviting landscape. But you’re unlikely to drive by the exquisite residence I visited for this month’s home feature. The route here took me deep into the interior of the neighborhood and asked me to turn off of what I had previously perceived as a dead-end street. This intriguing approach led me across a quaint little bridge over a creek. Just beyond was a very impressive abode on a very large, interesting lot. Brian and Oya Freed built the home, and they’ve lived here since July 2013 with their sons, Taner, 12, and Devin, 9. However, when the Freeds found this lot in 2011, it was a far cry from the stunning impression it makes today. “There was nothing but a small slab left here,” explained Oya. “The previous home was small and the garage was across the creek from the house.” She continued, “The owner would park her car on one side of the creek and cross a little footbridge to actually get home.” “At that time,” Brian elaborated, “it had been on the market for a long time. The problem was that the creek bisected the lot, so when people would look at it, they didn’t know what to do with it.” The Freeds did what no one before had the vision or resources to

“We believe we were meant to find this lot, because we had seen all these wonderful places that didn’t work for us, and now we were standing in front of this lot that no one else wanted, and we fell in love with it.”

do. They re-routed the creek, thus enlarging the size of the lot’s buildable area, and built their dream home. But it came through quite a process. The couple explained that they had to work with the city, including Houston Flood Control and the Corps of Engineers, who had to conduct a wetlands study. “So it took about a year to get our building permit,” explained Brian. After the building permits were obtained, the first step was to secure the area around the foundation and raise it above the flood plain. Gabions were installed around the newly re-routed creek bank to keep the foundation from sliding in. Piers were installed and secured to raise the home above the flood plain. Now, the construction of the home could begin. The Freeds had already found their builder, Frankel Building Group, and based their choice on this company for a number of reasons. “We researched and really liked their work, we liked the scope of services that came with their company and primarily we chose them because they were willing to do “cost plus a percentage,” which was important to us because of the degree of control it gave us over the project,” Oya detailed. With this method, the homeowner pays the builder for all direct costs associated with building the house plus a pre-determined percentage of all those costs as his/her builder fee. For example, if all the products and services needed to build

The exterior of the home is what Oya described as California Mediterranean. “We wanted simpler, cleaner lines than traditional Mediterranean; less fussy. For interior design, we went with Elizabeth Garrett because I liked her work and she had previously worked with our builder,” Oya continued. “We knew they had a good working relationship and that she was familiar with designing a Frankel home. She was really good with scale and budget and understanding what I wanted.” They made the selections and took them to the builder. Brian reported, “We had a good team who stayed on budget and on schedule. We didn’t spend money unnecessarily, there were no surprises and we were able to be a part of the process the entire time.” After 20 years of marriage and the experience of living in three previous homes together the Freeds knew what they wanted pretty well. The couple met in high school in Pennsylvania, courted through college then married. He joined the military, she had a teaching degree, and they moved to Hawaii where they lived in a 900square-foot cinder block duplex. “We didn’t care,” said Oya, “because we were young and the place was right on the North Shore beach. We loved living there.” Upon leaving the military, Brian joined the technology and consulting industry. They moved into a starter home in Dallas where Brian found work and here they celebrated the birth of their first child. A few years later, a job and eventual career change into the oil and gas industry resulted in a move to Northwest Houston, where the small family upgraded into a much larger home in Cy-Fair. They also

added a second son to their number. So with two growing boys, plus Brian’s transfer to his company’s downtown location, the couple decided to begin their search for a larger home closer in. “Initially, we thought we wanted to find an existing home to remodel,” said Oya. “We looked and looked and looked, and either the house didn’t work or the lot didn’t work. We believe we were meant to find this lot, because we had seen all these wonderful places that didn’t work for us, and now we were standing in front of this lot that no one else wanted, and we fell in love with it.” Their home shopping experiences helped refined their list of must-haves, and they nicely incorporated these into their new home. The GHBA Houston’s Best Prism Awardwinning design of the master suite is themed around rest, relaxation and romance. The large room mixes elements and textures and features a fireplace, lush linens and an amazing view of the pool and the creek. Also, Oya wanted her own custom closet, which is beautifully organized and spacious, and they each have a private toilet. Additionally, the common living areas are fabulously open and perfect for entertaining, just as the Freeds desired. The contemporary aesthetic of the home’s interior design, the monochromatic color scheme and the use of glass — both in

huge floor-to-ceiling windows and as loft railing — provides spaciousness and floods light into both the up- and downstairs. Another fireplace — this one double-sided — along with over-sized barn doors connects the kitchen, breakfast room and living area to the game room. The kitchen features a few of Oya’s specific requests: a griddle on her cooktop and grow lights above the buffet, which allow her to grow her herb garden indoors and right next to her prep space. Pretty clever! “We were very specific about our outdoor space,” said Brian. “We wanted the infinity edge pool, the hot tub, the tanning ledge and the landscaping.” Oya added, “We wanted a fire pit and a fire feature in the pool. Basically, we wanted to maximize our options with the lot size and the creek bank.” Maximize they did, too. It is fabulous; especially with Brian’s golf tee on one side of the creek and the green on the other side. Fore! The casita, too, was a non-negotiable on the list of musthaves. “Our casita is one element of the design that we love,” they shared. “We use it even when we don’t have guests. And it is perfect for parties. We just fold back the glass to enjoy the extra kitchen, fireplace, more seating and another fireplace. It also serves as a bathroom/dressing area when we use the pool.” Another size and space specific must-have was the dining room. Oya explained, “It had to be large enough for our Koa wood dining table, chairs and buffet.” When the couple lived in Hawaii, they commissioned a local artisan to craft

the dining furniture, and it is simply stunning in the smoothness of the wood and the design. One dining room wall also features a huge glass panel that allows a view into the couple’s distinctive wine vault. The couple owns a vineyard at the Vines of Mendoza in Argentina; having a special space to display their wines, as well as others they’ve collected through the years, was obviously a high priority in their home design. I have never seen another like it. The Freeds have a lot to be happy about in their new home. It’s custom to their family, their interests and their budget. From slab to sophisticated, this couple saw past the problem to the potential of this particular piece of real estate. They saw the neighborhood, the privacy allowed, the massive size and the amazing prospects this lot afforded. And what they got for their vision — their dream home. l

This year’s tile trends seem to offer more options for customizing and incorporating personal style and design. Consider the use of technology now available in tile design. You are now able to integrate photo luminescence and home automation into tile, utilize touch sensitive glazes, and incorporate nano technology that makes tile warm to the touch. There are even tiles that clean the air with biomimetics. It’s so George Jetson-esque. Technology is also responsible for a

Arts & Antiques by Dr. Lori Lladro: The Spanish Collectible Tips for keeping these figurines in top value By Lori Verderame ladró was founded in 1953 by the three Lladro brothers: Juan, José, and Vicente. The founders formed the family company in the village of Almácera, Spain, near Valencia. After more than 50 years, the Lladro family remains at the helm of the world-famous pottery manufacturing firm. The characteristic and unmistakable style of Lladró figurines relate to the elongated figures of the Mannerist period in Spanish art history, circa 1515-1600. The Mannerist artists included the famous Spanish master El Greco and his many followers who produced works of art featuring figures with elegant body forms. Lengthy necklines, expressive arms, and long legs were all typical of the Spanish Mannerist style and this tradition is continued via the collectible Lladró figurines. Lladró values have skyrocketed over the years. Of course, in locales such as Spain and the Caribbean islands, Lladros are marketed and sold from the hundreds of dollars level to upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. The larger and more complex the sculpture, the more valuable it is. Lladró pieces have a distinct form and color palette of soft blue, grey, off-white, and pink. In 1971, a logo was created that represented the link of both art and science, the basis of all Lladró creations in fine porcelain. The logo joined an

ancient chemical symbol with a stylized version of a very popular bellflower from the local Valencian region. This flower is incorporated as both a tribute to nature, the mother of clay, and to the region of Spain where Lladró was born. The finishing touch to this corporate logo is the Lladró name printed below the art/science symbol. When caring for Lladró figurines, the first consideration is their fragility. It is the delicacy and the firm’s attention to detail which makes these pieces so valuable and revered. The details on these figurines are very fragile and

when cleaning them, time and patience are crucial. Don’t submerge the pieces in soapy water as they will become slippery and may break when handled. It is best to be diligent about removing surface dirt or dust from these delicate works of art. It is best to remove even the small amounts of dust from your Lladro every week or so rather than to let dirt or dust build up on your collectible. When you are cleaning your fragile figurines, be sure to sit down at a table during the process. Don’t stand up, then try to balance or hold the object in your hand and clean

the piece. This is a recipe for disaster. Take your time, don’t allow distractions, and clean slowly using soft, white cotton cloths, dry cotton swabs, and dry sable hair paint brushes. Don’t use any commercial cleansers or soapy water. Slow and steady will keep these pieces in good condition for the long term. Remember, these are valuable and beautiful works of art. If you display your Lladró figure in a curio cabinet or china closet, be sure to open the doors regularly and let some of the heat escape. Some glass display cabinets retain heat and this heat will damage your Lladros, and all of your collectibles for that matter. It’s a good idea to open display cases every month or so.l

When and How to Prune Roses for Lush Results Tips to get the best blooms

In the summertime, dead-head the rose plant so that it has more flowers.

By Chelsea Fuss, Craftsy.com he first time I grew roses, I was so afraid of doing the wrong thing I treated them like fragile little plants. Actually, roses are surprisingly resilient and it’s tough to kill them. Pruning a rose garden a few times each season enables the plants to grow full and lush, and assists in fighting diseases. Trim the rose into a round shape and don’t be afraid to prune it back quite far, as it will grow back full and healthy. Below are a few more tips on when and how to prune roses.

T

When to Prune Roses I’ve always abided by Ed Hume’s advice to prune when the daffodils bloom. You can prune roses anytime in early spring after threat of heavy frost. Prune again, mid summer, to encourage a second blooming. Many also advocate pruning in the fall to just generally clean up the plants after summer. Don’t do it too early though, as you don’t want to encourage new growth late in the season when it will be hit with frost.

How to Prune Roses Remove any dead, aging wood to encourage new, fresh growth. Make sure the center of the plant has air circulation. Take out old growth, deadwood, and diseased canes and leaves. Make sure there is plenty of space and air circulation in the center of the plant. I like Portland Nursery’s recommendation to use a small saw. It makes it much easier. I also love using Felco pruners for trimming. Remove canes down until the plant is about 18 inches high. Prune so that the plant is round and shapely. Taking out deadwood and removing weak growth will help with air circulation so you hopefully won’t be dealing with mildew and black spot. When trimming, cut at an angle at one-quarter inch above a bud eye facing out.

Follow Up Dead-heading is the process of removing dead blossoms so the plant can put energy into making new ones. In the summertime, the more you dead-head a plant, the more flowers will bloom. Do this as blossoms die. My mentors always taught me to dead-head just above the five leaf branches. Always remove leaves and rose debris from under the plant, as it will encourage disease if it hangs out there. Climbing Roses These don’t need to be trimmed back as drastically. Take out weak canes, old deadwood, and diseased branches and leaves. Trim back off-shoots too. Don’t reduce the size as much as you would with a shrub rose. More Tips Do be a little more gentle with your younger roses when pruning. Also, for the old heirloom garden roses that only bloom once a season, just prune after they flower in the summer. Remember not to put rose clippings into the compost, as it encourages disease. Want to learn more? Which Liposuction Option is Best for You? Improved techniques to address those problem areas

mation and to learn as much as you can about the different technique options.

By Judy Latta re you stuck in a perpetual state of dieting and spending countless hours in the gym in an attempt to finally win the battle of the bulge? Have you been struggling to rid your body of a few stubborn cellulite problem areas that just won’t go away? If so, body-refining liposuction may be for you. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately, enhancing your self-image.” During liposuction, small tubes called cannulas are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin into the fat layer between the skin and the muscle. The surgeon uses a vacuum pump to suction fatty deposits out of

the body through the cannulas. In recent years, improved techniques have made liposuction safer, less invasive and less painful. Traditional liposuction is still one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery, but newer, cutting edge procedures, such as laser assisted and ultrasound assisted liposuction are gaining popularity among plastic surgeons and their patients. With all of these options, it can be confusing determining which is best for achieving your desired outcomes. Different liposuction techniques have varying results, discomfort levels, healing times and costs, and it is up to you, in consultation with your board certified plastic surgeon, to determine which technique will best meet your needs. As when making any major medical decision, the first step is to arm yourself with infor-

Traditional Liposuction According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, traditional tumescent liposuction is still the most common type of liposuction performed in the U.S. This method involves injecting a large amount of medicated solution under the skin before the fat is removed. The fluid is a mixture of lidocaine which is a local anesthetic, epinephrine to contract the blood vessels, and an intravenous salt solution. The local anesthetic helps to numb the area during and after surgery, and the epinephrine helps reduce blood loss, bruising, and swelling. Often, no additional anesthetic is needed for the surgery. The traditional super-wet technique is similar to tumescent liposuction, except less fluid is used during the surgery. The amount of fluid is equal to the amount of fat that is to be suctioned out. The upside of this technique in comparison to the tumescent technique is that it takes less time. The downside is that it often requires more sedation than the tumescent technique where the anesthesia is a major component of the injection. Traditional liposuction methods may not have some of the advantages of the newer methods, however, many surgeons still prefer these tried-andtrue procedures because they have been tested and refined over many years. Volumes of research exist on best-practices and potential outcomes related to these traditional methods.

Laser Assisted Liposuction Laser assisted liposuction (LAL) uses laser energy to liquefy fat cells. After the cells are liquefied, they are vacuumed or drained through small tubes. Many surgeons, due to the precision benefits of the smaller tubes and lasers, favor this method for treating small, confined areas, such as the chin and face. Since the tubes used for LAL are smaller than those used for other forms of liposuction, this procedure is preferred by some surgeons since it is less invasive, which could mean smaller scars, faster recoveries and shorter down-time. Another advantage of LAL over other liposuction methods is that energy from the laser stimulates collagen production, which helps tighten the affected skin after liposuction. Collagen is a fiber-like protein that promotes skin elasticity. Important considerations regarding laser assisted liposuction are that it can only be performed by specialized surgeons and it is typically more expensive than its traditional counterparts. Since it uses lasers, which are precision instruments, it is not often recommended for larger areas of the body. Additionally, it is still a relatively new technique so at this point there is not a lot of research published regarding its outcomes in comparison to other techniques. Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction Ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL) uses ultrasonic vibrations to liquefy fat cells and then vacuum them out. UAL can be done externally, above the surface of the skin with a special emitter, or internally, below the surface of the skin with a small, heated cannula. ➝

BASU PLASTIC SURGERY Put your own fat to good use! Naturally restore a more youthful you with Fat MicroGrafting. One of the classic signs of aging is facial/cheek hollowing due to fat atrophy. This volume loss is particularly more pronounced around the cheeks and lower eyelids. It is also seen in both men and women who have lost weight. If you feel you are always looking tired, or if you are fatigued with repeated injections with those costly artificial fillers, then it may be time to naturally use your own fat to gracefully turn back the clock. Under local anesthesia, Dr. Basu gently harvests a small amount of your own fat where there is some excess; he concentrates the good fat cells; and then he carefully transfers the fat cells in tiny amounts, in just the right places to restore the volume that time has taken away. The results are immediate! Patients are comfortable enough to drive themselves home and most are back to work the next day with minimal to no discomfort. KELSEY-SEYBOLD CLINIC MEN: You’re probably getting your car serviced for summer vacation. But have you tuned-up your own vital engine for the long haul of life? Make time for something you may have been putting off – your annual physical exam. One way to stay healthy is identifying potential illnesses through regular health screenings. Some diseases – such as heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancers – are “silent” with no noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Medical checkups can help detect many of these illnesses on the early side when treatment offers better patient outcomes. Health screenings may include blood-pressure checks; cholesterol checks; blood-glucose tests for prediabetes and diabetes; immunization updates; bone density checks for osteoporosis; and prostate exams. At Kelsey-Seybold, you and your family have access to high-quality healthcare with primary care physicians as well as specialists in many medical specialties. Learn more at their website. This technique is particularly appropriate for eliminating fat from dense, fibrous areas of the body such as the upper back. It can more efficiently treat large areas than other techniques and it generally produces less bleeding. Another benefit of UAL is that it can break up cellulite deposits. A downside of UAL is that it requires a larger incision than other methods, so it is more invasive and can leave a larger scar. UAL is often selected by surgeons and patients to use in conjunction with traditional techniques, in follow-up procedures, or for greater precision. Like laser-assisted liposuction, this procedure is still relatively new and the ultimate outcomes in comparison to other options are still being investigated. Is Liposuction for You? If you are considering body sculpting, before you even assess the different techniques, it is important that you understand the purpose and potential benefits of liposuction to be sure that it will truly meet

Liposuction typically targets problem areas that cannot be impacted by diet and/or exercise. It is not a cure for obesity. your needs. Liposuction is designed to reshape areas of your body, not to reduce body weight. It is not a cure for obesity. Liposuction typically targets problem areas that cannot be impacted by diet and/or exercise. These areas are often on the thighs and hips for women and abdomen and back for men. The face, neck, upper arms, back, and buttocks are all also commonly treated areas. If you decide that liposuction will meet your body sculpting needs, the experts at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommend that you consult with a board-certified surgeon before determining which technique option would be best for you. In particular, be sure that that the technique you select is FDA approved, particularly if you are considering one of the newer techniques. According to the ASPS, “Medical devices are used for a variety of medical procedures, but only certain devices are FDA approved or cleared for liposuction. Before considering laser or ultrasound assisted liposuction, it is important to determine that the device being used is cleared by the FDA.”l

Prostate Cancer: What Men Need to Know Age, race and family history are important factors •Weak or interrupted flow of urine. •Frequent urination, especially at night. •Difficulty in emptying the bladder completely. •Pain or burning during urination. •Blood in the urine or semen. •Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn’t go away. •Painful ejaculation. If you have any symptoms that worry you, be sure to see your doctor right away. These symptoms may be caused by conditions other than prostate cancer. Risk Factors There is no way to know for sure if you will get prostate cancer. Research has found risk factors that increase ancer is a disease in which abnormal cells in the body grow out of control. When cancer starts in the prostate, it is called prostate cancer. The prostate is a walnut-sized organ located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum in men. It produces fluid that makes up a part of semen. Not counting some forms of skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, and second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer deaths. Every year, more than 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 25,000 men die from it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides men, doctors, and policymakers with the latest information about prostate cancer.

your chances of getting prostate cancer. These risk factors include: Age: The older a man is, the greater his risk for getting prostate cancer. Family history: Cer tain genes (the functional and physical units of heredity passed from parent to offspring) that you inherited from your parents may affect your pro state cancer risk. Cur rently, no single gene is sure to raise or lower your risk of getting prostate cancer. However, a man with a father, brother, or son who has had prostate cancer is two to three times more likely to develop the disease himself. Race: Prostate cancer is more common in some racial and ethnic groups than in others, but medical experts do not know why. In 2010, black men had the highest rate of getting prostate cancer, followed by white, Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Asian/Pacific Islander males. Researchers are trying to determine the causes of prostate cancer and whether it can be prevented. They do not yet agree on the factors that can influence a man's risk of developing the disease, either positively or negatively. Screening for Prostate Cancer Not all medical experts agree that screening for prostate cancer will save lives. Most prostate cancers grow slowly or not at all. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against prostate-specific antigent (PSA)-based screening for men who do not have symptoms. The potential benefit of prostate cancer screening is early detection of cancer, which may make treatment more effective. Potential risks include false positive test results (the test says you have cancer when you do not), treatment of prostate cancers that may never affect your health, and mild to serious side effects from treatment of prostate cancer.

Most organizations recommend that men discuss with their doctors the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening. CDC continues to support informed decision making, which encourages men to talk with their doctors to learn the nature and risk of prostate cancer, understand the benefits and risks of the screening tests, and make decisions consistent with their preferences and values. Tests that are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer are: Digital rectal exam (DRE): A doctor, nurse, or other health care professional places a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the size, shape, and hardness of the prostate gland. Prostate specific antigen test (PSA): PSA is a substance made by the prostate. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood, which may be higher in men who have prostate cancer. However, other conditions such as an enlarged prostate, prostate infections, and certain medical procedures also may increase PSA levels. As a rule, the higher the PSA level in the blood, the more likely a prostate problem is present. But many factors, such as age and race, can affect PSA levels. Some prostate glands make more PSA than others. PSA levels also can be affected by certain medical procedures;certain medications; an enlarged prostate; or a prostate infection. Because many factors can affect PSA levels, your doctor is the best person to interpret your PSA test results.l CY-FAIR LIFESTYLES & HOMES / JUNE 2014

MILLSAP ES EXPERIENCES HURRICANE GAME SHOW WITH LOCAL METEOROLOGIST - Fifth-grade students at Millsap Elementary School participated in a game show-style event hosted by KHOU Ch. 11 chief meteorologist David Paul, answering hurricane trivia questions while being filmed by the CBS affiliate in the school gymnasium. The event focused on hurricane preparedness in time for the start of hurricane season on June 1, and tied into hurricane curriculum the students studied in science class. “Since we learned we were one of the schools selected, the teachers focused on this in the classroom,” said Millsap principal Jodi Matteson. “The students who were chosen as contestants gave up some of their personal time and studied on their own as well.” Millsap’s winner, which will be revealed on a KHOU hurricane special on June 20, will advance to the final round against three students from three other Houston-area elementary schools. The final round will challenge the students to obtain hurricane preparedness supplies in a limited amount of time at a local grocery store. The winner after the final competition will be featured as a guest meteorologist for a KHOU-11 newscast. “We’re going to leave with a champion today, but I hope they also leave with an understanding that these storms can threaten us every year and are something to take seriously,” Paul said. “We’re making sure everyone knows what the threats are here in Cypress about hurricanes, and that we need to be prepared in case a storm comes our way.” With hundreds of fifth-grade students as their audience, eight contestants took turns answering Paul’s trivia questions in a best-of-three format. The students rang bells to “buzz in” and answer questions about the starting date for hurricane season, hurricane wind speeds, storm surges, flooding hazards caused by slow-moving storms and more. “This was probably one of the sharpest groups of fifth-graders I’ve seen,” Paul said. “Kids, quite often, are the ones in the house paying the most attention to the weather. Hopefully they can carry that on and be able to prepare their own kids for storms when they get older.” Matteson said she was proud of the student contestants, as well as the entire fifth grade. “I’m incredibly proud of the way they represented us, from their behavior to their excitement level to the way they supported each other,” she said. “This is going to be a memory they’re going to keep for a lifetime. On the heels of all the rigorous testing they have had, to experience something this fun and special is pretty amazing.”

POPE ELEMENTARY BREAKS WORLD RECORD FOR LARGEST READING LESSON - An unofficial count

of 1,500 students, staff and community members at Pope Elementary School joined together to break the Guinness World Record for the largest reading lesson onApril 25. Although the record remains unofficial until all documentation is submitted and approved by Guinness, the Panthers appear to have broken the previous record of 1,350 participants — set earlier in Qatar, United Arab Emirates.

“As of yesterday, I wasn’t quite sure if we would have the numbers, but the community came out and supported us,” said Principal Becky Koop. “We have an incredible circle of support. My PTO parents said they would get the word out and get the parents here, and they did it. There was so much buzz with the kids talking about it. I just couldn’t let them down.” School namesake Sue Pope attended the record-breaking event, and admitted she never expected her name to appear in the Guinness Book of World Records.

BOBCATS HONOR COACHING LEGEND CHAMPAGNE PRIOR TO SEASON FINALE - Cy-Fair High School and the Bobcat baseball program honored longtime head coach Woody Champagne prior to their final regular season game on April 25 — a 3-2 win over Cypress Woods — at the Cy-Fair baseball field. Champagne is retiring after the 2014 season, which is his 40th overall and 34th at Cy-Fair. Champagne was presented with a commemorative plaque for his 34 years of service to the school, and former players from his time at Aldine Eisenhower High School presented him with an honorary statuette. “Forty years is a long time to be doing anything,” Champagne said. “I’ve been lucky, I’ve been blessed. It’s a hard thing to make that decision, but the support I’ve had over the years from family — it’s beyond words.” Following a collegiate playing career at San Jacinto College, Champagne launched his varsity coaching career in 1974 at Eisenhower, where he stayed until he accepted the Cy-Fair head coach position in 1980. He took the Bobcats to the state finals in 1984, and coached the Southern All-Star Team in the Astrodome that summer. He has collected numerous district championships during his reign, including six consecutive from 2005-2010. He coached Cy-Fair to the Class 5A state championship in 2007, and was subsequently named the Texas High School Baseball Coach of the Year by the Texas Sports Writers Association. That year he was also named the recipient of the prestigious Ray Knoblauch Coaching Award by the Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association. Champagne achieved his 500th career victory on April 22, 2008. He joined the 600win club on April 26, 2013. As a result, he was made a member of the Victory Club in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association both years.

LANGHAM CREEK BASEBALL COACH REACHES 500-WIN MILESTONE Langham Creek High School head baseball coach Armando Sedeño achieved his 500th career victory in a 3-2 win over Cypress Creek High School on April 25 at Lobo Field. The win also secured sole possession of the District 17-5A championship for the Lobos, who finished the regular season with a 24-3 record and top-5 ranking in the state of Texas. “I am just so happy for the community and the school,” said Sedeño. “I think that’s what I’m feeling.” While entering the season with 476 victories, Sedeño was skeptical about reaching the 500 mark. “At the beginning of the season I didn’t think there was any way,” he said. “I knew it was there, but I knew we would have to have a heck of a year. And we did.” The Lobos won the regular season finale in dramatic fashion, with junior John Michael Sopher hitting a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Langham Creek the narrow 3-2 win. The players mobbed on the field, and afterward Langham Creek athletic coordinator Todd Thompson presented Sedeño with a crystal plaque commemorating his 500 career wins. Senior left-handed pitcher Aaron Fletcher, who will play for the University of Houston next year, tossed 17 strikeouts in the district-clinching performance. A Lubbock High School graduate, Sedeño’s coaching career began in Victoria ISD, and after stints at Brownfield and Spring Westfield high schools, he was named Langham Creek head coach in 1990. Since joining the Lobos, Sedeño has notched 20 playoff appearances and coached more than 130 players who have received college baseball scholarships.

Cindy does a great job with her students, and Andrew certainly has a bright future.” Cypress Ranch High School was one of 28 semifinalists in the Division 2 Narrative category for its narrative titled “Emily.” The film was created by Cheryl Bradford’s theater film class. THE MAKING OF AN AMERICAN BRAND By Fred Collins These two pieces of paper tell a significant story of how business was conducted in that era.

C

arhartt is a well-known brand of clothing worn at construction sites, in the oil patch, and on most farms and ranches. It is considered the best work wear for people that make living outdoors. The company was born in Detroit in 1889 and has strong ties with union workers and American-made products. It is still operated as a private company by descendants of the founder and is still has manufacturing factories in Detroit, as well as Mexican factories. It is common attire for those campaigning for or speaking from political positions. During campaign season it may be donned by many candidates of both parties. It was a favorite attire of Presidential candidate John Kerry. Governor Perry often appears in a Carhartt jacket.Former President Bush may be the all-time Carhartt model. He seemed to have more jacket colors than even the current catalogue. But how did this brand become so widespread and so “American”? The invoices and papers from the Juergen Store in Cypress Top Park provide a clue. The store operated during the late 19th century and most of the 20th century. The letter and flyer pictured here illustrate how Mr. Carhartt managed to get his products distributed nationally. While the bill is for only $82, that was a substantial amount of

money in 1914. The average annual income was just over $600; likely much less in Texas. Mr. Carhartt saw the importance of getting even a small community store to carry his product, even if he had to finance it himself at considerable risk. These two pieces of paper tell a significant story of how business was conducted in that era. It also shows how thorough and diligent these “brand makers” were in pursuing their business with attention to detail and to each potential and resulting customer. The Juergen store has thousands of invoices and many tell stories of how Americans conducted business during the golden era of national brand development. The period also saw drastic changes in the market place as America moved from a horse powered, rural farming society into an urban, internal combustion engine driven manufacturing and service industry society.
