The 13th annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7th, 8th, and 9th grade KISD band students, will be held at Seven Lakes High School from July 13-17. The camp will include daily section rehearsals, full band rehearsals and fun music-based electives. Lunch is also part of the camp. The cost is $125. All registrations after June 5 need to include a late registration fee of $25. After Thursday, July 2, late registration must be first approved by contacting camp administration through the camp email address, and if approved, all camp registration forms along with payment must be hand-delivered. The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday at 9 a.m. After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Wet ‘n’ Wild Splashtown in Spring for an additional $40 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and drinks are included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5). Students will be grouped according to ability with the number of bands being determined by total enrollment for the camp. Registration form, audition materials and medical form and permission to travel are to be downloaded by campers from katyisd.org/dept/finearts. An email confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration, and follow-up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before the camp begins. The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive top quality instruction on their instruments from KISD and Houston area band directors.

HORSE HEAD THEATRE CO. PRESENTS THE WHALE; OR, MOBY-DICK, JULY 29-AUG. 15 Horse Head Theatre Co. presents the world premiere of The Whale; or, Moby-Dick, an immersive, theatrical performance inspired by Melville’s timeless classic. Set inside a newly constructed great, white dome on Houston’s Buffalo Bayou, audiences will experience the sea beast’s innards in this unforgettable, theatrical voyage. The play runs July 29 Aug. 15 at the Buffalo Bayou Partnership Silos, 351 N. St. Charles; all shows begin at 8 p.m. Conceived, developed and performed by Houston actor Phillip Hays (Stages, Prague Shakespeare Company) and written by playwright Timothy N. Evers (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), The Whale brings the classic Melville story to life in a way never done before: a one-man show performed with the theatrical grandeur of a large-scale production. Inspired by Hays’ real life Moby-mania, the story revolves around Philip, a hapless actor, who has been swallowed by a whale. To forestall his impending digestion, he entertains the monster with a quick, dirty and spectacular retelling of the sea beast’s favorite whale tale, Moby-Dick. Will he make it through all 135 chapters of Melville’s tome? Or will Philip’s Arabian Nights-esque tale end with his demise? The audience, as fellow swallow-ees, lives out Philip’s final hours from the inside of an enormous 44-foot dome – built by Horse Head for this project – on the banks of Houston’s reinvigorated Buffalo Bayou. The inside of the dome will come to life through video projections and extensive soundscapes, complementing Philip's last moments alive, as he attempts to perform Moby-Dick in its entirety. Jazz with a Latin Flair The Katy ISD Education Foundation hosted Jazz with a Latin Flair on April 24. Held in partnership with the Katy Jazz Festival V.I.P reception, the event benefited the foundation and its Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program. Last year, in its inaugural grant cycle, the foundation awarded more than $88,000 to 117 Katy ISD teachers for inspiring, innovative classroom projects that have been implemented this school year. The foundation’s second grant cycle began this past November with grants awarded to teachers in May 2014. Jazz with a Latin Flair featured an evening of jazz music performed by The Mike Vax Sextet. The group has performed for jazz festivals, conventions, cruise ships, hotels, resorts, high school and college concerts and dances, The Prescott Jazz Summit Educational Outreach Project, and jazz societies all over the United States. Leader Mike Vax is very active in the music education field. He has performed concerts and workshops in both the classical and jazz idioms at more than 2,500 high schools, colleges and universities all over the world, over the past 40 years. He is also an international performing artist for the Getzen Musical Instrument Company. EXPLORING SPIRITS
HOME WINEMAKING
Distilled uncovers the best spirits the world has to offer. These are not necessarily all the best-known examples, but they are the best crafted and most interesting. Spirit by spirit Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley explain what you need to know to appreciate a spirit – its ingredients, its classic forms, the choices a distiller makes in creating it. They also offer their picks to “Drink Before You Expire” – from gin and rum to shochu and tequila. There are also plenty of suggestions for innovative and classic cocktails and their insider tips on getting the best out of your spirits.
For years, From Vines to Wines has provided readers with the knowledge to participate in every part of the winemaking process – from selecting the vines to cellaring the wine. Now author Jeff Cox has fully updated this classic book with the fifth edition. He takes beginning winemakers through every step from the growing process to harvesting to crushing, fermenting, aging and bottling. Helpful illustrations and charts, glossary terms, record-keeping templates, resource listings and a pest and disease appendix complete the guide.

Leaky gut syndrome has been linked to a number of medical issues, from autoimmune conditions and autism to diabetes and food allergies. This malady is a state of the small intestines that comes into play when microscopic enlargements of the spaces between the cells lining the gut become porous, which compromises the intestine’s role as a filter. In Leaky Gut Health & Diet Guide, Dr. Makoto Trotter and Doug Cook offer expert medical advice to help better understand and manage the condition along with a diet plan, including weekly menu plans that are easy to follow and healthy food lists to make shopping easier.

Volvo V60 and Jaguar F-Type
Volvo V60 | Starting price: $36,800 A Stately Euro Wagon
P
erhaps the one thing European manufacturers do exceptionally well is make station wagons. And perhaps no Euro carmaker does station wagons better than Volvo. Safety, style, performance, design — you name it — it’s all there in the V60. As wagons go, Volvo’s V60 is low-slung and sleek, but also practical. Its swooping roof-line and long nose bespeak stately European design. And the fact that it is a true wagon, as opposed to being a crossover, makes it a refreshing choice in the world of practical family cars. That’s because it is a car, and not simply a car-like vehicle. If you need a little more from the V60, consider the Cross Country version, which has more of a rugged, outdoor adventure look with its differentiated body moldings and trim. You get an extra 2.6 inches of ground clearance with the Cross Country as
well as the capability of going off road, thanks to Volvo’s Haldex all-wheel drive system. The system monitors wheel slippage and can send up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear axle before you can even notice the front wheels are slipping. It truly does shine when venturing off the pavement, though this vehicle is not meant for serious off-roading. It will however, get itself out of a jam quite effortlessly. The V60’s interior is a study in elegance. Leather contour seats are some of the most comfortable in the automotive world, and they look good too. The cabin possesses a cockpit-like feel as it wraps itself around its occupants. Creature comforts also abound, including a touch-screen interface that gives you all the information about the vehicle you could imagine. Behind all of this luxury seating you’ll find
Jaguar F-Type | Starting price: $65,000 Beauty, Brawn and Brains
T
he 2015 Jaguar F-Type is an enthusiast’s car. A slick-as-silk aluminum body, supercharged engines that offer plenty of torque-riddled power and technology to deliver the best performance possible? That’s the F-Type. Porsche finally has a serious competitor. While James Bond typically drives an Aston Martin, he would be wise to consider another British automobile as his main mode of transportation. That’s because the Jaguar F-Type is the complete package rolled up into one beautiful piece of driving machinery. Everything about this vehicle screams performance.

| Katy-Fulshear Lifestyles & Homes | July 2015
voluminous cargo space…that’s why you want a wagon in the first place, right? The cavernous rear quarters of this wagon will accommodate 43.1 cubic feet of whatever you want to put in it. This wagon is powered by a choice of engines. The Cross Country is outfitted with the 250-horsepower, turbo charged, in-line 5-cylinder. The front-drive model comes with a 240-horsepower, turbo 4-cylinder engine. Both are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheelmounted paddle shifters. The smaller engine gets an impressive 29 combined mpg, while the larger engine is only slightly less than that. In either case, the ride is velvet-like smooth and power is ample. Closing the doors gives you that satisfying thunk of a well-built, safe-feeling vehicle. The cabin feels solid, as has always been the case where Volvo is concerned, and remains quiet even when approaching high speeds. The V60 maneuvers with grace and finesse and looks darn good doing it. The V60 definitely has an upscale, European air about it, and it comes with equally sophisticated technology, to boot. Safety, of course, is Volvo’s hallmark. Its Intellisafe System blends a host of safety features working together to keep occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists safe. Notable safety features include Active Bending Lights, Pre-Collision Monitor, and Blind Spot Warning. Computers continually monitor and adjust as necessary.
Sig 2 22-37 Katy July 15_Layout 1 6/15/15 4:24 PM Page 35
It begins with iconic styling, harkening back to the old E-type of the 1960s. It has the classic long nose and short rear deck. Swept-back headlights look like the eyes of a feral cat on the prowl. LED running lights add a distinctive flair. The F-type is thoroughly modern, however, with its all-aluminum body. The FType looks equally irresistible in either hardtop or convertible body style. It has a deployable rear spoiler that automatically rises at higher speeds and the door handles go flush for uninterrupted airflow along its sides. This vehicle is a work of art and looks beautiful on display; but the better news is, this beauty was also designed to be driven. The F-Type comes with three engine choices: a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that gets either 340 horsepower or 380 horsepower, or a 5.0-liter V8 that unleashes 550 horses. An 8-speed automatic transmission is the standard offering, but for the pure driving enthusiast, there’s the 6-speed manual gearbox. No matter what setup you choose, you’re going to gain access to high levels of supercharged linear power in the form of torque. So with just a little pressure on the throttle, you’ll find yourself at 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds — that’s with the 380-hp V6. The F-Type handles with laser-like precision. The hydraulic steering feels good and offers a tactile driving experience. Even when the adjustable suspension is set to its firmest setting, the ride is sophisticated and not abusive. This Jaguar utilizes Adaptive Dynamics, which monitors body motion and pitch rates 100 times per second, then continually makes adjustments. This translates to superior control, handling and agility. In other words, this car is really fun to drive. That is due in part to the fact that the cockpit-like interior is all about one thing: the driver. The dash, center stack and steering wheel-mounted controls are all clean, simple and user friendly. The start/stop button is red, no doubt screaming what is most important here. The analog speedometer and tach feel sporty while the touch screen feels refined. Navigation and Sirius XM radio are both standard, as is a 770-watt, 12-speaker Meridian sound system. The Jaguar F-Type is nicely priced at $65,995. That’s a lot of car for the buck. For information on these and other vehicles, visit mycardata.com. l

By Cherie Foster Colburn hen Georgia native Kathy Huber drove into Houston in the late 1970s, she never dreamed she would spend the next three decades as one of the gurus of Texas gardening. After all, she’d earned her degree in English literature with a plan to teach, not write. Truly, she HAS taught, though. Thousands have been instructed as to when and where to plant what from this former Houston Chronicle garden editor. In her weekly column and feature articles, Kathy learned alongside her readers, honest and open about what it takes to be a gardener in these parts. But, when Kathy relinquished her throne in February and stepped down as garden editor, she not only shifted to a new season in her life, but also in her landscape. We had the opportunity to ask Kathy about her years spent advising folks what to plant,

prune, pick and purge in their yards and what she’ll be doing at her Houston home now that more days are her own. Q: How did a Georgia girl who studied English literature in North Carolina end up as the garden editor of a major Texas newspaper? A: Many plants that grow in Georgia grow in Texas, but how they’re grown here is another thing. I had to scramble when a serious hobby became my job as the Houston Chronicle’s first full-time garden editor. Fear was a great motivator. I had passion and curiosity, but no horticulture credentials. So, I became a student. Although I’d been gardening for years, I had to approach the job as any beat reporter does: find the experts — fast. Thank goodness the area is full of teachers who gener-
ously shared their knowledge so I could absorb and pass it on. I took the Master Gardener class; I read and researched. I, like any gardener, have learned through trial and error in a climate that dishes out deluge and drought. I’ve really enjoyed studying soil types, disease, insects and their relationships not only with plants but each other, organics and our dependence on plants. (Kathy’s now thinking of training to become a Texas Master Naturalist.) Q: You’ve said you got into gardening because your mom and grandmother gardened. Has your son shown any interest? A: Our son was so involved in sports that he didn’t have time for plants. He traveled quite a bit. However, he’s always commented when the garden is in decent shape, so perhaps that seed of appreciation might develop once he and his wife own a home. Q: Speaking of family, your husband, John Everett, is a photographer. Does he enjoy gardening or prefer to stay behind the camera? A: John is the family composter. And he’s a whiz at bundling limbs and other plant debris unsuitable for his large bin to be picked up by the recycling truck. He helped me spread 50 bales of pine straw this spring. Otherwise, I’m the main gardener. Q: Do you still have your Jack Russell terriers? What are some dos and don’ts about mixing dogs and landscapes? A: We still have one (Spike), and I’m beginning to consider a puppy. A 16-pound Jack Russell is kinder to flower beds than a thundering 80-pound lab, so take a dog’s size into consideration when planting. (See sidebar for tips about dogs in the garden.) Q: You’ve called your landscape an ongoing experiment. What are some results that were not what you expected? A: I’ve always been one to try new plants, plus each spring growers from across the country would send me many

large boxes of the latest cultivars to test their suitability for our area. ‘Kaleidoscope’ abelia, ‘Blue Chip’ buddleia, ‘Cuban Gold’ duranta, ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea, Endless Summer hydrangea, ‘Soft Caress’ mahonia, leucothoe, cephalotaxus and cryptomeria (shrubs) have performed beyond expectations in my non-scientific home trials. Native or well-adapted ornamental tree winners include twowing silver bell, Mexican clethra, Mexican plum and Mexican bauhinia. I think everyone has fallen in love with Chinese fringe trees. ‘Rising Sun’ redbud, a beauty I discovered at a garden writers convention a few years ago, is not always a great bloomer in our mild winters, but the foliage is While water might not be in short stunning, changing from peach to supply right now, Kathy Huber - like lime-green to a darker green. most Texas residents - recognizes I’m a big fan of bulbs — for all seadrought can always be around the sons. pots to better control drainage and light. Only a handful of the blizzard of newer coneflower cultivars have been worthwhile in my garden. Keepers include ‘Sunset,’ ‘Pow Wow Wildberry,’ and a tall white called ‘Fragrant Angel.’ Q: Your yard is shady in the back and sunny in the front. Which is your favorite? A: There have been considerable shade/sun changes in our garden over the years. Our back shade garden was my favorite as I’ve always loved the comforting feeling of living beneath big trees and being surrounded by lush foliage. I find woodlands a magical place to explore. Besides, it’s so stinking hot here. But, we lost large trees during Hurricane Ike, and therefore the full shade in our backyard. This was upsetting at first, because I had to quickly move shade-lovers such as crested iris, giant ligularia and peacock ginger. And of course, without the canopy, our AC bill went up. However, I soon realized it was a great opportunity to introduce more old roses (one of Kathy’s treasures is the ‘Peggy Martin’ rose which she received from the namesake) and new trees such as Mexican

clethera, Chinese fringe tree, Mexican plum, Mexican bauhinia and purple-leaf vitex. The increased light also gave me the chance to experiment with new buddleias and cultivars of perennial coneflowers, agastache and verbena. Q: What are the top three issues Houston area gardeners face? A: Water: gardening successfully with too much rain or none at all; stressing or even killing plants by over- or under-water-

ing; waste/conservation of water. Although it’s been a soggy spring, I’ll never forget when it didn’t rain in 2011. Soil: improving poorly draining soil and making nutrients available to plants. Pesticides: when are they necessary; what’s safest for the overall environment.

More Tips from Kathy Huber Some of Kathy’s favorite summer plants: SUN: summer phlox, angelonia, ‘Terri’s Pink’ hibiscus, lance-leaf rudbeckia, Zahara zinnias, ‘Violet Ice’ verbena and cleome A knock-out summer sun combo is ruby grass, Gulf Coast muhly grass, Mexican feather grass and rosemary. SHADE: torenia, crested iris, fall-flowering toadlilies, giant ligularia (Farfugium), pigeonberry, peacock ginger, ‘Soft Caress’ and Chinese mahonia, cephalotaxus, cryptomeria. Combine any of these for a rich, layered look in the shade. And you can’t beat pentas for sun or bright/dappled shade spots. Butterflies love them! *** While Kathy Huber has retired from her role as garden editor of the Houston Chronicle, she remains involved in the area gardening scene as a speaker and by keeping up the Chronicle’s garden events calendar. Here’s her list of must-see events / places in the area related to landscaping:
• Mercer Botanic Gardens & March Mart • Houston Arboretum & Nature Center • Armand Bayou • Bayou Bend Gardens • Buffalo Bayou Park • McGovern Centennial Gardens in Hermann Park • Cockrell Butterfly Garden at the Houston Museum of Natural Science • Peckerwood Garden near Hempstead • Demonstration gardens at Texas AgriLife Extension Service Centers • Plant sales offered by Master Gardener organizations, Urban Harvest, plant societies and garden clubs • River Oaks Garden Club’s Azalea Trail *** A dog romping in the landscape doesn’t have to mean disaster for either. Some recommendations from Houston area gardeners when it relates to pups are: 1) Give a dog a safe place to run and play. 2) Skip the pesticides. 3) Know about each plant's toxicity. 4) Discourage nibbling. 5) Sago palms can kill if you don’t get your pet to the vet quickly after ingestion. Keep an eye on your dog if he/she is outdoors when you’re fertilizing, too. Some dogs love to snack on chicken poop and other organic pellets. l
“ I had to scramble when a serious hobby became my job as the Houston Chronicle’s first full-time garden editor.” A favorite perennial of Kathy's, this garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) was a pass-along plant from a friend. The aggressive nature of plants like alstroemeria and dwarf chenille led her to become more judicious in what she shares with others. Friends that she wishes to remain so, anyway.
Today’s gardeners are much better educated than when I began my job. I still get ‘why won't my bougainvillea bloom’ and ‘how do I prune my crape myrtle’ questions. But thanks to the expertise of numerous plant societies and other educational organizations, we are better equipped. Q: Which season is easiest for new veggie gardeners in the Houston area? What do you prefer to buy and grow? A: I think late winter/early spring is the easiest time to start growing food. The fall garden can be quite productive, but starting time is late July/August, and it’s so hot it takes more effort to keep seed lings/transplants going until high temps ease. I gave up growing most vegetables as I didn’t have the time, but continue to grow eggplant (Kathy says ‘Patio Baby’ proved be the most incredibly productive eggplant), lettuce during the cool months, and several herbs. However, I hope to get back to growing tomatoes, beans and okra, which are so easy and heat-tolerant. Meanwhile, I’m lucky to have Master Gardener friends who feed me well. Fortunately, we have farmers’ markets around town that offer locally grown. Q: Now that you have more time to travel, what tips can you share about making Houston area
gardens vacation-proof? A: For years, I paid someone to water and keep an eye on things while vacationing in summer. Now, I’m streamlining and simplifying so the garden can hold its own and/or make it easier on anyone who I may ask to water. I tend to go overboard with pots, so I’m planting fewer but larger containers. If necessary, I move them to the shade to slow moisture evaporation while gone. I resist buying new plants and I don’t fertilize before leaving town. I do water trees and beds slowly and deeply, if hasn’t rained. And I’m a mulch queen. (Kathy prefers pine straw mulch on top of husband John’s compost because it’s less likely to wash away.) Although Kathy’s only self-appointed claim to royalty is mulch queen, Houston area gardeners expanded her kingdom to all of gardening. While she’ll miss many aspects of working at the Houston Chronicle, she’s excited to finally have more daylight hours for playing in her own yard — finishing projects begun years ago, adding more layers of plants to existing beds, and staying focused on one area at a time. Ever the student/teacher, she’ll continue sharing her hard-won landscaping lessons with us. The one thing that will probably never change is Kathy Huber’s reign as the queen of gardening. l Katy-Fulshear Lifestyles & Homes | July 2015 |

Buy and Sell at Yard Sales Like a Pro Expert tips can help you find a masterpiece
M
any of us have spent a weekend driving around our favorite neighborhoods to shop on other people’s lawns. Typically we end up buying a few things that we really don’t need but just can’t leave a neighbor’s lawn without a watering can, vintage poster and bunch of napkins. You spend $17 and call it a day. I have been advising people about at yard sales (also called garage sales or rummage sales) for decades. Here are my top tips for those of you who love yard sales — as buyers and as sellers. The first thing that most people don’t know about yard sales is that they are big business, not small time stuff with neighbors cleaning out old junk. In reality, yard sales are the source of objects that command six-figure price tags in other markets — ones far away from the front yard. That’s right, the high-priced auction and Internet markets for art, antiques and collectibles use yard sales as a major source for inventory. And many of the major auction houses and smaller estate auction houses regularly send out “pickers” to get some of their auction inventory from yard sales. Pickers are sent to neighborhoods where homes have reached the 50-year mark, assuming that their original owners are ready to move to assisted living facilities or downsized residences. Most unknowing yard sale

Neighborhood yard sale shoppers often don’t realize they are competing with professional “pickers.”
hosts think that they are offering their items to naïve shoppers and fellow neighbors. Well, be warned. You are competing with the pros. These buyers know what you’ve got, what it is really worth and where to sell it for top dollar, and they are not in the game to tell you that you just made a big mistake putting out that Eastlake table or vintage Guerlain perfume bottle on the front lawn. And your price is all wrong, too! No, these pros are going to get you lower the asking price and take away something very valuable and was once a treasured family heirloom. Know what you’ve got before you schlep it out to the front lawn. At my website DrLoriV.com, you can upload a photo of an object from a yard sale, and I will tell you its value before you buy it. This is how technology will help you

cash in. Click on “Send Photos for Review” on the left. Here is an example that will have you thinking twice before you have that yard sale: recently, a floral still life painting that was sold at Christie’s auction house in New York for $882,500 was originally bought at a yard sale for $29 in Wisconsin. Yep, the original owner’s family didn’t know that they had a priceless piece of fine art, so they unknowingly sold it at a yard sale for $29. The picker working for the auction house got them down to $18, and the auction house later sold it to a fine art collector for a museum for a whopping $882,500. That could happen to you. Find out first. Tips for Buyers Okay, you get my point, but you aren’t hosting a yard sale. Here are my tips for buyers:
• Bring cash as it will help your negotiating power. • Establish a budget and stick to it. • Be polite, but always negotiate. This isn’t friendship, this is business. • Celebrity items bring big value. • If it is in poor condition, leave it on the lawn. • A box of old jewelry might look like junk, but something of value — like a piece of 14k gold or sterling silver — probably got overlooked in that box. • Bring a magnifying glass, loupe or at least your reading glasses. • Ask the seller about the item’s background. Even if they don’t know a lot about the item, they still probably know more than you do about it. l

arely do haute couture, glamour and outdoor organic stylishly meet; high fashion chic and eco-friendly are unlikely friends; and seldom do Mississippi Delta and New York runway successfully pair. Yet Tia and Jempy Neyman have fused these elements magnificently in their home on a bayou. Touring the Neyman home is an unforgettable experience. The couple bought and renovated the home with a clear vision in mind: fusing their love of nature with the important elements of their life as a couple as well as their individual personalities. Tia is a former high-fashion model whose business required numerous trips a year to the Dallas and New York markets for personal appearances, trunk shows and high-end specialty stores that carry Tia Mia, her jewelry line. She continues to design elegant jewelry and in addition practices ballet and Pilates. Jempy is an Air Force Academy alum from the Mississippi Delta and is semi-retired from his career as CFO of an energy company. He now consults in the oil and gas industry and studies martial arts, a life-long practice. Their desire to have their home reflect their passions was the driving force behind acquiring this property and the changes they made to it. What they achieved is a sophis-

ticated renovation that might be called “Cosmopolitan Chic.” Highlighting the property’s beautiful, natural elements and blending them with vintage glamour was an important facet of the new design. Evidence of this is found throughout the home. Upon entry into the foyer, the tone is set with an atrium filled with exotic plants visible to both the living room and the dining room downstairs. Stained glass windows original to the house were encased in glass to help protect them. Black textural pots filled with bamboo, pineapple plants and hydrangea frame the doorway. On one side of the atrium, the dining room opens into a lovely New Orleans courtyard featuring flowering plants, ferns
and other assorted greenery. Three fountains run continually, providing a restful morning retreat. Old carriage lights were replaced with modern exterior lights better suiting the contemporary architectural feel of the house. Glossy black double doors provide drama. Both natural settings, the atrium and courtyard, are reflected in mirrors that define the formal dining space — one large mirror on the wall and a mirrored sideboard displaying Jempy’s vintage decanters that include Baccarat, Lalique, Val St Lambert, some of which are more than 100 years old. They sit on a Grande Baroque by Wallace sterling silver tray, a family treasure. The vintage Italian Art Deco table with silver foiled squares under glass was acquired
from a local antique dealer. Mercury glass accessories add sparkle. The entire room is filled with light-reflecting surfaces, and overhead is one of the chandeliers in Tia’s collection — this one with a crown on top. “I had to have it when I saw the crown,” she said, “as my grandsons call me ‘Duchess.’ ” On the opposite side of the atrium, the living room blends comfort and elegance with modern lines accentuated by unexpected nods to Jempy’s Southern roots. It has an urban, Art Deco feeling with comfortable seating and luxurious but comfortable fabrics, which make it a nice place to simply lounge, something that few rooms with this level of glamour provide. For example, it has a sprawling lavender mid-

century curving sofa with a fox fur throw opposite cowhide chairs and a mirrored coffee table. Two black mirrors with beveled glass are hung “just so” as to allow anyone seated in the chairs a view of the atrium. “Never does anyone miss a view of the outdoors,” said Tia. More natural light and a bigger outdoor view are available from the den, where more vintage glamour takes center stage, most obviously in the form of the mannequin who sits fashionably among the collection of books on the fashion designers Dior, Jacques Fath, Jacque Heim, Charles James, Lanvin and Charles Parnham, of the early Tiffany years. Tia said, “The mannequins are my delight — a form of artwork by me if you chose to see it that way. They wear my fabulous vintage gowns. By dressing my mannequins, I’m able to keep the gowns ever present instead of housed in closets. They even get to wear beautiful designer lingerie, stockings and shoes.” If kept naked, they get the benefit of wearing Tia’s jewelry designs. The couple kept the original paneled wood throughout but painted it a soft, greige tone. An Evin Thayer portrait of Tia sits in front of a silver leaf, beveled glass mirror above the fireplace. A charcoal rendition of a national fur ad in which she once was featured is on the right. Also in the bookshelf are Jempy’s emblem from ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange, photographs of Jempy ringing the Exchange bell and photos of him, Tia and his board at the Exchange — all mementos that mean a great deal to the couple and symbolize Jempy’s business success. From the den as well as the breakfast room, these nature lovers enjoy an uninterrupted view of the bayou and the wildlife. The breakfast room was designed to replicate the outdoor view without detracting from it. The table base is a silver-coated tree trunk with a glass top and Lucite “ghost” chairs. Two-hundred-year-old columns from India frame the art, and another of Tia’s chandeliers beautifully catches and reflects the light. Every room on the back side of the house overlooks the landscaped yard, tree-lined bayou and all the splendor nature allows, including daily visits from wild ducks who Tia feeds. Flocks of migratory ducks and birds, including blue jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, wrens and more, visit daily to dine at the multiple feeders. “It is literally a birder’s paradise,” said Tia. “We even see alligators swim the bayou, along with badgers, jumping fish and the occasional deer who wanders up.” The kitchen, which was formerly painted avocado green, pink and yellow, now boasts a functional and stunning remodel. The couple added a glass door to the existing cabinetry that display Tia’s family crystal. Tia also selected stacked marble for the walls in the kitchen to add some luxury and change the overall aesthetic. She loves the transformation and said, “Cooking is relaxing for me and is something I really enjoy doing for Jempy. This house gave me the opportunity to finally have a Viking cook top, baking ovens and my ultimate favorite — a warming drawer!” The kitchen floors are now a warm wood, and a window was added to allow for more natural light and provide another view to the back property. The backsplash and wall color were selected to mimic the pearl-like inside of an oyster. The dark countertops provide a contrast and a little more shine as the granite is infused with strands of pyrite or “fool’s gold.” To tie the kitchen in with the other downstairs spaces, the same granite as the fireplace surround in the den was used. Her original designs are on display in lighted cases along with vintage pieces, while works-in-progress sit atop the work tables. “This is my favorite part of the house,” said Tia. “Everything in these rooms speaks to my passion.” Other rooms were converted as well, such as an office space for Jempy and workout space to accommodate their love for ballet, Pilates and martial arts. Tia shared, “After being away from each other, it is nice to come home to a place we appreciate inside and out. We have beautiful art work and mementos of our life together inside. And outside, we can listen to the frog symphony by our back fountains and the bayou at night.” The Neymans have successfully incorporated each other’s tastes and personalities throughout the home. The result is an elegant, comfortable home that is truly oneof-a-kind. l Katy-Fulshear Lifestyles & Homes | July 2015 |

Co-designer: Jennifer Hobson Rustic Farm-Style Flair — A couple with a young child desired an open farm-style kitchen that accommodates everyday family living and creates an ideal space for enter-

taining guests. Utilizing three different cabinet finishes and a mix of feminine and masculine materials, the designer created warmth, texture and harmony in the kitchen. A large, elegant island opens up to the family room, and a rustic farm table in front of the island serves as a cozy spot for family dining and entertaining. Cabinet door panels discreetly conceal some of the built-in appliances, keeping the warmth of the cabinetry as the main focal point of the room. Low storage innovations enable the child to access the kitchen items with ease and safety. As a reclaimed 100-year-old barn wood adorns the ceiling, large white trestles add texture and beauty, while anchoring the entire space. A custom hood behind the range is the main focal point of the kitchen, and an attractive bar area makes room for casual entertaining. Glass doors, open shelving and a farm-style sink not only retain the farmhouse ambiance, but also add balance to the bar area. The designer balanced the simplicity of the rustic atmosphere with the elegance of modern style, perfectly embracing the clients’ vision for their home. 1st PLACE, LARGE KITCHEN Brigitte Fabi, CMKBD Drury Design Kitchen & Bath Studio Glen Ellyn, Ill. The Moroccan Marvel — To create a functional living space conveying a love of cooking, art and life in general, the designer drew inspiration from the homeowners’ private collection: a stunning Moroccan antique door from a trip to Marrakesh. A custom steel “I” beam was fabricated and installed to allow for an open concept in the century-old home. Interior walls within the original space were eliminated, allowing for greater traffic flow, natural light and efficiency. A banquette features a sofa and eight seats with cushions used to emphasize the Moorish textures and furniture styling. Custom veneer panels creating the banquette area was hand-stained on site and made to match the walnut cabinetry. A custom refrigerator/freezer door features glass panels with hand-etched designs.

The Moorish arch around the range area was created using a laser cutout of the shape and covered with a dimensional vein-cut marble, and a custom walnut borders the edges. This eclectic kitchen housing many focal points and contrasting textures, serves as a functional, multifaceted space for the busy, city family! 2nd PLACE - LARGE KITCHENS Peter Ross Salerno, CMKBD Peter Salerno, Inc. Wycoff, New Jersey Co-Designer: Julie Connors; Robert So A Touch of Elegance — In order to best cater to the client’s request for a unique, formal kitchen filled with character and personality, the designer found products from around the world to incorporate into the space. The kitchen had a four-foot hallway from the foyer to the garage on the right side, which was removed to accommodate a full refrigerator and freezer and also open up adequate space to fit two 100-inch islands. The family room and the kitchen were connected by the old hallway, which, when removed, opened up the kitchen to a family room with a beautiful paneled archway that is centered with the stove, the two islands and the dramatic mirrored ceiling. The detailed rosette ceiling in the center of the room features inset antique mirrors framed in acanthus leaf moldings. The center ceiling medallion is embellished with a blue crystal chandelier. The stove wall has multiple focal points including the blue La Cornue stove, a reclaimed tin hood, two curio cabinets and a 2 ¼-inch-thick concrete counter top with a silver gray finish to match the hood. The archway leading into the family room is paneled and finished to match the cabinetry. On both sides of the arch, the designer centered two tall China cabinets with curved mullion doors. Elegant crafting and exclusive detailing enable every wall in this stunning kitchen to serve as a focal point on its own. 3rd PLACE - LARGE KITCHENS Elina Katsioula-Beall, CKD DeWitt Designer Kitchens Pasadena, Calif. Co-designer: Maria Alaverdyan The Cake Baker’s Dream — The client’s dream was to own a kitchen well-equipped

for painting, sculpting, baking and decorating cakes, opening up to the views outside. This led to the design of an all-white, airy kitchen with playful splashes of fuchsia and green and subtleties evoking the client’s favorite “Alice in Wonderland” theme. The former kitchen is now a spacious eating area with an expanding glass table that often doubles as an additional cake-decorating work station. In the former butler’s pantry spot now sits a triangular kitchen featuring two peninsulas stemming out of the oven and refrigeration wall. The prep and cook peninsula holds the range top and prep sink facing the folding French doors that open the living space to the garden and the views outside. The bake and decorate peninsula next to the ovens uses the front counter space to mix the dough and land the baking pans, while the backside houses all cake decorating supplies. The back wall of the kitchen triangle houses the refrigerator, double ovens, warming drawer and microwave, while a deeper counter inbetween features a roll-up backsplash which conceals a roll-out commercial espresso maker. White cabinetry and counters keep the look light supported by a few splashes of color. A Fuchsia baker’s hutch with open shelving displays a bake ware collection and a focal wall is lined with recycled oval fuchsia glass tile. This pristine kitchen is truly a baker’s dream that takes the client’s hobby to the next level! 1st PLACE -MEDIUM KITCHENS Amy Yin Amy Yin Interiors, LLC Short Hills, New Jersey Co-designer: Emily O’Keefe, CKD, CBD; Chris Papaleo, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB Heart of the Home — Inspired by the historic wooden window screens from the client’s ancestral home, the design of the kitchen cabinetry’s fretwork came into place. This design motif is repeated on a different scale in the kitchen’s marble backsplash, and its curves are echoed in the silhouette of the glass pendant lighting. To achieve an inviting, updated style, gleaming white counters were balanced with gradations of warm gray cabinetry,

look. Since the large island required a material without a seam, the designer incorporated a neolith porcelain countertop which is 100 percent recyclable and composed of all natural materials. American Walnut with a flat sliced grain match was specified for the eating bar on the island as well as some of the storage areas. Lining up perfectly with the center of the range hood fan are three central skylights that bring ample natural light to the island, minimizing the need for electricity during daytime. Stainless steel countertop with a seamless welded sink provides an exceptionally durable and hygienic surface, and an oversized industrial faucet at the main sink makes a style statement while facilitating water efficiency. Bright and spacious, catering to modern conveniences, this magnificent kitchen complements the essence of the sprawling beauty outside.
1st PLACE - SMALL KITCHENS Corey S. Klassen, CKD, CBD Corey Klassen Interior Design Vancouver, B.C. A Timeless Transition — Designed to appeal to a single client who works from home and loves to entertain, this small kitchen features a clean, contemporary and functional space for socializing, dinner parties and day-to-day use. The vertical space borrowed from the dining area makes room for a wall-oven, and adding more storage space addressed the functional needs of this kitchen. The cleanup center has increased capacity, containing a single dish drawer to the right of the sink and a functional trash bin to the left. The cooking center is at the heart of the kitchen with an induction cooktop and pop-out hood-vent above. Recessed lighting was added throughout the space and task areas were enhanced with under cabi-
net lights. Custom color walls and tall cabinets in white match all the finishes and the custom bench seat. Accented by natural walnut open shelves and contrasted by the newly matched parquet floor, wood tones repeat the natural theme with the customized basket weave marble tile in the backsplash. Earthy engineered quartz creates a strong, linear working surface. The kitchen adorns a timeless look for the future of the residential investment, truly reflecting the client’s sensibilities to light, color and textures. remodeling project. The homeowner’s original kitchen that lacked storage, counter space and a dishwasher was reorganized by moving the refrigerator closer to the cooktop and sink, clearly defining a work zone and separating it from the path of travel from the foyer to the family room. Shifting the living room doorway made room to move the fridge to the same wall as the cooktop and also provided a better layout for the island. A fossil art from Green River Stone was placed above the sink as a focal point. Energy consumption was reduced by switching from fluorescent tracks to LED can lights and under-cabinet lighting. The Energy Star rated Big Chill fridge and Kitchen Aid dishwasher further reduce energy consumption. Since all of the farmhouse’s electricity is generated from solar panels on-site, the switch from a gas stove to an induction cooktop was a sensible one. Many parts of the kitchen were reclaimed and repurposed – the cabinetry was built by a local cabinet shop from old wormy chestnut shelves rescued from a warehouse. The stained glass found at a local salvage shop was originally from an Arts and Crafts home. The booth seats were made from old pews and the table from old silo wood. Since composting was part of the clients’ lifestyle, the designer built a pull-out made to fit their compost bin. The clients now enjoy a more efficient kitchen that stands in harmony with the retro farmhouse aesthetic. The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) is the nonprofit trade association that owns the KBIS®. our hardwood floor is installed. Your house finally feels like a home. But now what? How do you care for your new investment? Read on.
Meet Mat Floor mats are wonderful things when it comes to hardwood floors. Tiny particles, like dirt, can act like sandpaper and scratch your wood. By placing a floor mat at each entryway and encouraging family members and guests to wipe their feet, the majority of dirt and grime will remain on the mat. Also put a floor mat or rug in any area where water could be splashed — like near the kitchen sink. This will hinder any possible water damage.

Regular Maintenance Along with a hardwood floor comes the responsibility of keeping it clean. The better care you take of it, the longer your floor will maintain its original beauty. Step one is to purchase a highquality broom so that you can sweep your floor regularly of dirt, dust and other particles. Second step is a vacuum cleaner without a beater bar, to get in between the boards and other hard to reach areas. Deeper cleaning techniques vary depending on the installation and finish of your hardwood floor. For “Finish in Place” hardwood floors, it’s recommended that you use an 8-inch by 14inch terrycloth mop with a rotating head that makes cleaning corners, under cabinets and along base boards as simple as pie. Professional cleaning products recommended by your flooring retailer can be used to remove tough stains and spills without dulling the finish of your wood floor. Cleaning Products: Hardwood flooring manufacturers of prefinished wood floors have specific recommended cleaning products for maintaining the wood floor’s finish. It is best to use these products and follow their instructions so you do not void your warranties. If you don’t know the manufacturer of your wood floors, check with your local flooring retailer since there are many different wood floor finishes today. Always test the cleaner first in some obscure corner, such as closet or pantry, to make sure you are using the right product.

Don’t use a wax on a wood floor with a urethane finish. Do use cleaners that won’t leave a film or residue. Don’t use ammonia cleaners or oil soaps on a wood floor — they’ll dull the finish and affect your ability to recoat later. Do use a professional hardwood floor cleaner to remove occasional scuffs and heel marks (just spray some cleaner on a cloth, and rub the stained area lightly). Pro fessional flooring retailers carry specially designed spray cleaners designed for today’s hardwood flooring.
Don’t wet mop or use excessive water to clean your floor. Don’t wet mop or use excessive water to clean your floor — wood naturally expands when it’s wet and can cause your floor to crack or splinter. Check with your manufacturer to see if they recommend steam cleaning your particular hardwood floors. Do clean sticky spots with a damp towel or sponge. Do minimize water exposure, and clean spills immediately.

Screen and Recoat: If and when your hardwood floor begins to look like it belongs in an old western saloon, it’s time to consider screening and re-coating. Screening is the process used to abrade or grind down your floor’s polyurethane finish. Next, fresh coats of urethane are applied. The result is a rejuvenated floor that looks as good as the day it was installed! Sand and Refinish: If the damage to your hardwood floor is severe, then you may require sanding and refinishing. This process involves sanding your floor down to the bare wood and refin-

Protect Your Investment Color Loss and Shading: All hardwood floors fade or change shades over time. Like our own skin, hardwood’s exposured to sunlight may greatly increase this process and cause permanent color change. Window treatments are recommended to shade your floors from the sun’s harsh UV rays. We also recommend rotating area rugs and furniture regularly, thus allowing hardwood floors to age evenly from UV exposure. Scratching: To avoid permanent marks and scratches, it’s a good idea to cover furniture and table legs with flannel protectors. Be careful when moving heavy objects across your floor to avoid scuffing. Stiletto heels may be fashionable, but what’s not in fashion — or covered by your warranty — are the dents and dings they may cause to wood floors. Pets: Just as you should keep all other sharp objects away from your wood floors, likewise trim your pet’s nails regularly. Also, pet water and food bowls should not be placed directly onto a hardwood floor. Pet urine should be wiped up immediately, and then wipe the area with a clean damp cloth. Love your floors and your floors will love you back for a long, long time. l

Enjoy flowers, herbs and edibles in containers
Railing planters filled with colorful combinations can add sparkle to balconies, decks and porches.
By Melinda Myers righten up your patio, deck or front entrance with containers. They’re an excellent way to add color, fragrance and beauty where plantable space is limited or nonexistent. Set a few containers on the front or back steps, in the corner of your deck or in other location where they can be enjoyed. Try stacking and planting several containers to create a display with greater vertical interest. Check the views from inside the house looking out as well as when enjoying the space outdoors. Strategically place containers for the greatest viewing pleasure. Save even more space by using railing planters. You can dress up the porch or deck by filling these planters with colorful flowers and edibles. Make sure they are sturdy and easy to install. Don’t limit yourself to flowers. Mix in a few edibles, and bring some homegrown flavor to your outdoor entertaining. You and your guests will enjoy plucking a few mint leaves to flavor beverages, basil to top a slice of pizza or a sprig of dill to top grilled fish. Herbs not only add flavor to your meals, but texture and fragrance to container gardens. And the many new dwarf vegetable varieties are suited to containers. Their small size makes them easy to include and many have colorful fruit that is not only pretty, but delicious. Add a few edible flowers like nasturtium and pansies, and dress up a plate of greens with them for a gourmet touch. Or freeze a few pansy flowers in ice cubes, and add them to a glass of lemonade or sparkling water. Include flowers like globe amaranth (Gomphrena), Lisianthus and daisies that are great for cutting. You’ll enjoy your garden inside and out throughout the season.

By Judy Latta ost of us obsess over our complexions, the most visible part of our bodies, and would never forget to pamper our faces with meticulously selected cleansers, exfoliators, sunscreens, toners and moisturizers. Why, then, do so many of us fail to devote the same attention to our necks and chests, also a sensitive and highly visible area of the body. Premature signs of aging can appear on the neck and chest due to care and lifestyle issues such as neglect, sun damage, harsh cleansers, excessive dead skin cells, dehydration, poor diet, smoking, repetitive motions and lack of exercise, as well as from uncontrollable

factors such as heredity, gravity, environmental conditions and stress. According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), caring for your neck area is one of the best ways to defy your age because it is a body part where signs of againg can develp quickly. “The skin there is thin and contains less supportive collagen compared to your face,” notes the Academy. Common Signs of Aging on the Neck and Chest Many different structural changes can occur in the neck and chest area as we age, such as the formation of fatty

TIMELESS PLASTIC SURGERY PETER CHANG, M.D., D.M.D. The small natural indentations in the cheeks, known as dimples, are highly coveted by people around the world. The delightful defect that causes dimples is actually a shortened facial muscle in each cheek, which pulls upward and forms the dimple when a person smiles. Dr. Chang offers dimple creation surgery, also known as “dimpleplasty.” At Timeless Plastic Surgery, they have over 15 years of experience in cosmetic surgery and have performed countless dimple creation surgeries. Dimple creation surgery is a 30-minute outpatient procedure performed with local anesthesia. Dr. Chang makes a tiny incision inside of each cheek and removes a small piece of the muscle. He then attaches the remaining muscle to the underside of the skin with a dissolvable suture, which creates a permanent dimple in the skin. Patients can choose the precise location, length, and depth to create their own designer dimples! Call Timeless Plastic Surgery for a free consultation, and visit their website gallery for real patient results to see beautiful before and after photos for other cosmetic procedures.

deposits under the chin, known as double chin; excess fat and skin droop in the lower face, known as jowls; loose skin; deep wrinkles across the neck; deep wrinkles down the chest, particularly in the cleavage area; and the protrusion of the vertical cords in our necks. The neck and chest can also undergo color and tone changes as we age, such as redness, dilated blood vessels, rough skin and brown spots from sun damage. Additionally, according to the AAFPRS, current technology is also taking a toll on our neck and lower face in the form of a relatively new condition dubbed “tech neck.” Plastic surgeons and dermatologists have noted that patients are experiencing new wrinkles and sagging jowls specifically related to the repetitive motion of looking down at their smartphones. “With such thin skin on the neck, looking down at your phone constantly can cause collagen and elastin to break down and lead to deep wrinkles and sagging,” says Stephen S. Park, president of AAFPRS. Prevention So how do you prevent premature aging under the collar? A good rule of thumb is that whatever skincare regimen you use for your face, you should also use for your neck and chest. The first step should always be a mild cleanser to remove dirt, grime and toxins, and to give you a fresh slate to work with. Most people use a specialized, mild cleanser for their faces, but use their regular body soap on their sensitive necks and chests. Next, a good moisturizer and occasional exfoliation will help the skin on your neck and chest to stay healthier, softer, firmer and clearer. Finally, as it is with your face, it is vitally important that you protect the skin on your neck and chest from the sun and elements. Wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects you from UVA and UVB rays is the best method for preventing premature aging of the face, neck and chest. If you can, stay out of the sun, particularly during midday, or if you have to go into the sun during peak times, cover your neck and chest areas to protect them when possible. Treatments While healthy living, good skin care and prevention from overexposure to the sun are the best methods of protecting the skin on our neck and chest areas, most of us have not been as vigilant over the course of our lives as we should have been and are now facing the long-term effects of damaged skin. Fortunately, modern science has provided us with a range of options, both surgical and non-surgical, as well as prescription and non-prescription, for treating the aesthetic effects of aging. The following are some common treatments often recommended by dermatologists and/or cosmetic surgeons for necks and chests that are in need of refreshing. Surgical Treatments: Necklifts, liposuction, chin augmentation, procedures to tighten neck muscles, and the

removal of excess skin are all surgical solutions available to rejuvenate the aesthetics of the neck area. The most complete and long-lasting treatment is a lower rhytidectomy, also known as a neck lift, a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens the jawline and neck. It addresses problems such as double chin, jowls, loose neck skin, and deep wrinkles. According to the AAFPRS, “Upper Neck lifts and neck tightening procedures are becoming increasingly popular for women to get rid of telltale ‘turkey waddle’ ” (loose skin under the chin). Laser skin resurfacing: Through laser resurfacing, skin imperfections such as wrinkles and age spots on the neck and chest are vaporized using pulsating beams of light. The laser beam removes the outer later of damaged skin, the epidermis, and stimulates the underlying layers to promote the growth of healthy skin cells and collagen fibers. Injections: Technically known as botulinum toxin, botox is injected into particular areas of the neck and chest to paralyze wrinkle-producing muscles and nerves. The effects generally last about three months and then skin reverts to its previous form, requiring regular injections to maintain the benefits. Dermal fillers, or “wrinkle fillers” as they are often known, are substances that are injected into creases in the skin to plump-up the skin’s surface to reduce wrinkles. Fillers can be human fat from your own body, collagen or other natural or synthetic substances. Most dermal fillers work only temporarily, thus regular injections may be needed to maintain the benefits. Microdermabrasion: This method of skin refinishing exfoliates, or scrapes away, the top damaged layers of skin on the chest. Peels: Also called derma peeling, this is a solution that is applied to your chest to remove the damaged layer of skin. Chemicals and other solutions are used in different combinations and dosages to create light, medium or deep treatments depending upon your needs. Prescription treatments: Two common topical cream treatments for damaged skin that are available only with a prescription are Hydroquinone and Tretinoin. Hydroquinone is used to fade over-pigmented skin and improve clarity. Tretinoin increases collagen production to reduce wrinkles and discoloration. Non-prescription treatments: A wide range of over-thecounter remedies are available for treating the skin on the neck and chest. Some common ones are Retinol for stimulating the generation of new skin cells, Alpha Hydroxin Acid for removing dead skin cells and Alpha-Arbutin for skin lightening. Natural remedies: Some homeopathic remedies such as soy and coconut oil can help soften and smooth skin, and some herbs such as red clover are believed to work as cleansing agents for detoxifying the skin after sun exposure. For information on these and other possible solutions to improve signs of aging on your neck and chest, make an appointment with your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. l

Summertime at Las Verandas, Roatán Island jewel of the western Caribbean
Las Verandas Beachfront
By Elizabeth Anthony ust off the Caribbean Coast of Honduras is Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands, where spectacular diving and snorkeling draw visitors from around the world. The island is completely surrounded by a large reef system that is part of the Mesoamerican reef – the second-largest barrier reef in the world – which is teeming with fish, coral, sponges, rays, sea turtles and even whale sharks. The islanders have a fascinating heritage that includes African and Carib, European and other ancestry. English is the dominant spoken language, and Spanish is second. Roatán is a long and narrow island – about 37 miles long and only three miles wide at its most expansive spot. The rolling hills and mountains, with a maximum altitude above sea level of approximately 900 feet, make every piece of property virtually a unique ocean view lot. Roatán’s coastline is surrounded by outstanding white sand beaches, iron shore bluffs and mangrove forests.

This 18-hole, par-72, 7,200-yard championship golf course was created by renowned golf course architect Pete Dye. The course starts at the ocean’s doorstep, rises into the island’s rolling foothills and then takes golfers on a wild ride back to the seaside clubhouse. The Black Pearl is also eco-friendly – one of only a few courses in the world to use a special strain of grass called Seashore Paspalum, known for its environmental compatibility, ease of irrigation and maintenance and translucent green hue. Dye Designs pioneered the use of this saltwater-tolerant grass for tropical projects, and its appearance juxtaposed against the turquoise Caribbean waters inspired the tagline “Come mix the best greens…with the best blues!” Other unique course features include one of Dye’s signature island greens and 14

”Wine and Spirits” Top 10 and More Winners Great finds at all price points
T
Russian River Valley 2013 — This startling ultra-premium wine “…combines subtle floral aromatics with tropical fruit notes that are enhanced by a viscous minerality that melts into a clean lingering finish.” Another gorgeous Chardonnay from this top producer. Try with roasted red snapper topped with crabmeat! $55
he top 10 wineries of the April 2015 issue of “Wine and Spirits” Top 50 Sold at Restaurants, are, with permission: Jordan, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Sonoma-Cutrer, Duckhorn, Cakebread, Caymus, Silver Oak, Kistler, Veuve Clicquot and Chateau Ste. Michelle. And I noticed that Meiomi, owned by the Wagner Family at Caymus, is number 13! Recommended Sparkling Wines: Chandon Délice nonvintage — For those with a sweet tooth, here is the ticket in sparkling wine. A delicious offering by itself or with anything you enjoy as hors d’oeuvres, light seafood or chicken dishes. Also works with spicy! The winery also recommends pouring over ice with a splash of sparkling water and a fresh garnish such as mint, pink grapefruit or cucumber. $22 Domaine Carneros Brut 2010 — Part of the Taittinger stable and Certified Organic, this is possibly the “greenest” winery in California. Starting in 1990, one of the first to do seated pairings at the winery. The dosage now produces a wine with about 9 grams of residual sugar per liter, and the blend is 60 percent Pinot Noir and 40 percent Chardonnay. “Toasted brioche and toasted almonds.” Also, one of the most successful wine clubs! $28 Recommended White Wines: SIP Moscato California 2014 — A highend, sweet, juicy 100 percent Orange Muscat. Odd-shaped bottle with a screwcap. Those with a sweet tooth will not be disappointed. Luscious mouthfeel. By itself or with spicy seafood or chicken. Or as dessert with a sugar cookie. $19 E. Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone Blanc 2013 — Absolutely stunning! Primarily Viognier, this surprising wine is fresh, rich and complete with pear and kiwi flavors. A “must” buy. $19
Robert Mondavi Chardonnay Napa Valley 2013 — Winemaker Genevieve Janssens used cooler-climate grapes from Carneros, Oak Knoll grapes for flavor and crisp acidity and Wappo Hill grapes in Stags Leap District to add a touch of opulence. Mostly aged in French oak and only partial malolactic. Tastes like a boutique even though 68,188 cases produced! $19 Cherry Tart Chardonnay California 2013 — A blend by winemaker Jayson Woodbridge from three vineyards: Stanley Ranch in Napa Valley, Oak Meadows in Sonoma County and Garcia Vineyard in Monterey County. The winery touts this as a “…sexy beast of a Chardonnay with brilliant delineation and stunning length…” $24 Chablis Maison Simonnet-Febre 2012 — While the Premier Cru and Grand Cru Chablis are certainly more limited, expensive and almost always “better,” this is an exception which over-delivers. Round, ripe fruit and a little nutty characteristic, this is a wine with minerality and seemingly a sense of place. Try with shellfish or hors d’oeuvres such as country paté or truffle mousse with cornichons. $25 Nickel & Nickel Chardonnay Stiling
Recently Tasted White Wines from the Vintage Select Portfolio — All Recommended: Ridgeback Vansha White Paarl 2014 — A surprisingly underpriced white blend from South Africa. $13.99 Matahiwi Pinot Gris Warrarapa 2013 — Don’t worry about the slightly dark color — it was planned. Deep and rich in the style of the best Alsatians (except for the color). $16 Smoke Screen Chardonnay Napa Valley 2012 — Successful attempt to over-deliver on quality. $18.95 Frisson (a strong feeling of excitement) Chardonnay Russian River Valley Dutton Ranch 2012 — Owned by Pam and Terry Davis, Houstonians, there are four reasons to try: excellent appellation for Chardonnay, superior vineyard, top-rated vintage and well-made! $43 Recommended Red Wines: Il Fauno di Arcanum Toscana IGT 2010 — 56 percent Merlot, 23 percent Cabernet Franc, 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 1 percent Petit Verdot, this is the introductory wine to the Arcanum Estate Wines of Tuscany. Esteemed winemaker Pierre Seillan (Verité in Sonoma and Chateau Lassegue in Bordeaux) makes stunning Bordeaux blends, and this is the most noticeably underpriced. $28 Marchesi de Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2009 — This underpriced Brunello exhibits blackberries and violets with pepper and spice. A perfect match with an overkill pizza at La Vista on Katy-Fulshear Lifestyles & Homes | July 2015 |

May 24. A great value which would sell easily for 20 percent to 30 percent more. $45 EnRoute Pinot Noir Les Pommiers 2013 — Grown on the famous Goldridge soils in Green Valley, this vineyard succeeded an apple orchard and was groomed by the Far Niente owners specifically for EnRoute. Aged in French oak (55 percent new) for 11 months. Aromas of cherry, sweet tobacco and spice are followed by a rich, juicy taste. Save for a roasted chicken or duck entré. $65 Recently Tasted Red Wines from the Vintage Select Portfolio — All Recommended: Villa Trasqua Chianti Classico Reserva Nerento 2007 and Chianti Classico Reserva Fanatico 2008 — Two top reds from iconic winemaker Franco Bernabei. Respectively, $25 and $20
Smoke Screen Napa Red 2011 — This is an esteemed owner and winemaker who successfully over-delivers. Sixty five percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Petit Verdot and 10 percent Merlot. A steal at $22 Ridgeback SGMV 2012 and Cabernet Franc 2012 — From Paarl, South Africa, two worthy reds at excellent prices. SGMV $22; Cabernet Franc $27.50 Post House Red Blend Penny Black Stellenbosch 2012 — Another classy South African blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and 4 percent Chenin Blanc! $28 Tom Eddy Cabernet Sauvignon Elodian Napa Valley 2012 — Tom Eddy strives for elegance, structure and balance, and achieves it in his “introductory” red. Only 400 cases produced. $34 Fifty Row Red Galleron Cuvée 2010 —

Aged 16 months in French oak (40 percent new). $36.50 EONIAN (everlasting) Napa Valley Red Blend 2011 — An elegant but substantial blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Only 220 cases produced. Underpriced at $42 Lasseter Chem de Fer Rhone Style Red Sonoma Valley 2012 — Only 325 cases of this first-class wine produced. I have been a fan of Lasseter since its equally good 2008 Chem de Fer. $48 Brulium Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Gap’s Crown 2013 — A boutique producer of ultra-premium, single vineyard wines. One hundred percent of the profits go to charities selected by ardent fans and supporters called “The Brulium Brigade.” $60 Delectus Merlot Knights Valley 2009 (current release) — A big, rich Merlot (my favorite wine of the Delectus stable). Try with roasted duck with cherry sauce! Or a steak. $75 Meander Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2010 — Owned and made by Amy Aiken, a lovely wine made in a style of elegance and persistence. Try with a filet mignon. $75 AD VINUM Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Sleepy Lady Vineyard 2011 — Made by Chris Phelps, whose credentials include stints in Bordeaux, Dominus, Caymus and Swanson. Butterfly Heroes Help to Save the Monarch NWF Campaign inspired kids and parents to save the declining species
T
he majestic Monarch butterfly needs help if future generations will have the chance to enjoy its beauty. The National Wildlife Federation (NWF), America’s largest wildlife conservation and education organization, gave more than 10,000 Butterfly Heroes Garden kits to help save the Monarch butterfly. NWF’s Butterfly Hero Campaign, launched earlier this year, asked people to submit a photo of themselves making the international sign language sign of the butterfly on NWF’s Butterfly Heroes website. After taking the pledge, participants were mailed the free Garden Kit and also became eligible to win a trip for four to Walt Disney World. Botanical Interests supported the campaign with a donation of native milkweed seeds. "We can each be a part of saving the Monarch butterfly. The simple act of planting milkweed with your family provides Monarchs with a place to lay their eggs, and

helps ensure this iconic species has a future," said David Mizejewski, naturalist with the National Wildlife Federation. Pollinators, a group which the monarch butterfly is a part of, are mostly responsible for all the food that we eat. While Monarchs are found across the United States — as recently as 1996 numbering some 1 billion — their numbers have declined by approximately 90 percent in recent years, a result of numerous threats, particularly loss of habitat due to agricultural practices, development and cropland conversion. Degradation of wintering habitat in Mexico and California has also had a negative impact on the species. Monarch butterflies spend winter in Mexico or Central and Southern California, and then migrate north in spring into neighborhoods across the U.S. They need places to rest their wings, drink flower nectar, and lay their eggs on milkweed which their baby caterpillars eat. Monarchs are losing this
habitat, and without it the Monarch cannot survive. NWF is asking that people across the country plant milkweed to preserve the Monarch’s habitat. NWF’s Garden for Wildlife program encourages responsible gardening that helps pollinators and other wildlife thrive. It encourages planting with native species like milkweed and discouraging chemical pesticide use. With nearly 200,000 locations and growing, NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitats and Community wildlife Habitats recognize individuals, schools, groups and whole communities committed to providing habitat for wildlife, including pollinators. Each of the nearly 200,000 certified locations provides food, water, cover and places to raise young. This makes yards, schools, businesses, faith-based organizations, campuses, parks, farms and other communitybased landscapes into wildlife sanctuaries. The Butterfly Heroes Campaign is organized by NWF and is a part of a number of

programs designed to inspire people to get outdoors, help wildlife, and become more aware of the nature in their neighborhood and community Milkweed for Monarchs Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on the leaves of milkweed, the only host plant for this iconic butterfly species. As such, milkweed is critical for the survival of Monarchs. Without it, they cannot complete their life cycle and their populations decline. Indeed, eradication of milkweed both in agricultural areas as well as in urban and suburban landscapes is one of
the primary reasons that Monarchs are in trouble today. The good news is that planting milkweed is an easy way that each of us can make a difference for Monarchs. There are several dozen species of this wildflower native to North America, so no matter where you live, there is at least one milkweed species naturally found in your area. Planting local milkweed species is always best. You can collect your own seed or purchase seed or plants to addto your garden, or any landscape in your community. Three species have particularly wide ranges and are good choices in most regions: common
milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), swamp milkweed (A. incarnata), and butterflyweed (A. tuberosa). The latter two are highly ornamental and widely available via the nursery trade. Texas is in the South Central Region for milkweed species. ight years ago, two teenage athletes met and fell head-over-heels in love. Jessica “Jessi” Lauren Ortiz and Michael Zachary “Zach” Toth both attended Mayde Creek High School in Katy ISD. They knew that college would soon add distance to their relationship. But neither miles not time apart diminished their commitment, which culminated in a beautiful outdoor wedding and storybook reception at Pecan Springs Event Venue in Brookshire. The guests at the event celebrated true love! The couple has always shared a passion for sports. After graduating from high school in 2008, Zach played baseball his freshman year at Eastfield Junior College in Mesquite and his sophomore year at University of Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa. He graduated from Texas State University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science with a minor in special education. He is employed as a health and physical education teacher and baseball and football Coach at Cypress Falls High School in Cy-Fair ISD. Jessi played softball her freshman year on a scholarship at Blinn College in Brenham, then attended Texas State University and St. David's School of Nursing. She graduated in May 2013 and is employed as a registered nurse at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center in the Intensive Care Unit.

First Date Jessi was 15 years old when she first spotted 17-year-old Zach walk across the Mayde Creek Junior High gym with his parents. His younger sister, Caitlin, and her younger sister, Rachel, were both on the same volleyball team, and the families were there to cheer them on. “I thought he was so handsome,” says Jessi, who found out from friends that Zach was already in a relationship. Weeks later, Zach joined Jessi in the hall and announced, “I'm going to walk you to class.” He swung her hand, then parted ways with hardly any conversation at all. Weeks went by before they had another encounter. During Christmas break Jessi made a bold move — she private messaged him on MySpace, and to her surprise he responded and asked for her phone number. After a few exchanged messages, Zach invited Jessi and her best friend to a party with his friends. “I fell can’t-eat-can’tsleep-reach-for-the-stars-over-the-fence-world-serieskind-of-in-love,” says Jessi.

Courtship The couple basically grew up together and experienced many special milestones while dating, such as attending each others high school graduations, leaving home for separate colleges a year apart, adjusting to a long distance romance, celebrating their 21st birthdays and enjoying family vacations at the Guadalupe River and Galveston Beach every summer.

About a year before Zach popped the question, he constantly reminded Jessi that he had no money. He had been working at the student center at Texas State University and “wasn't really able to save much.” Dinner dates at Taco Bell and Redbox movie nights convinced Jessi that an engagement would happen in the distant future. Still, she had her own ideas about when he would propose — and he knew it. This was why she was truly so surprised when it actually happened. On July 15, 2013, Jessi started her career as a registered nurse in Houston while Zach was still finishing his degree in San Marcos. He wanted to celebrate her first week on the job with a weekend get away to Galveston. He picked her up from her parents’ house. Although her family is tight-knit, she thought it was strange that everyone gathered in the kitchen to bid them farewell. The plan was to have dinner and drinks, go to the hotel, then enjoy Sunday at the beach. But after dinner at Jimmy’s on the Pier, Zach announced, “We are going to have to go soon. I have a surprise for you.” He took her on a sunset horseback riding tour, and she was ecstatic. But 10 minutes into the ride, the guide stopped and announced, “This is usually where riders like to have their picture taken." Jessi reluctantly climbed off of her horse and complained under her breath, while Zach politely shoved her along. Finally, she spotted roses and a picture frame propped perfectly against the fence post that said, “Will You Marry Us?” As she turned around, Zach was down on one knee holding the most

gorgeous ring she had ever seen. “I'm not even sure if I took the time to even say ‘yes’ before I grabbed for it,” says Jessi. After his romantic proposal, their sisters popped out from behind the bushes. They had been taking photos of the entire event. Everyone drove back to Zach's parents’ home in Katy to celebrate the joyous occasion!
Engagement The couple was engaged about a year and a half while planning their March 2015 nuptials. Zach graduated from college and started his first job. They purchased their first home in November 2014 and celebrated their first Christmas together in the same city. When one of their future groomsmen deployed to Afghanistan, they adopted his Labrador Retriever, Gauge. They also attended pre-marital sessions with their officiant, Reid Whiteside. The couple’s sweetheart table featured custom burlap banners. • The couple cut a "naked" cake with two flavors: French almond with a buttercream filling and lemon with raspberry buttercream filling, crowned with an “I Love You” topper. • Décor included the couple’s initials in studded burlap. • Guests were treated to koozies featuring the bride’s artwork.
The Wedding The bride describes her wedding theme as “Simple Shabby Chic” with wedding colors of mint, peach and gold. She loves an organic garden feel and found inspiration through Pinterest photos. She wanted her ceremony to look and feel effortless, complete with comfortable vibe so that her guests could relax and enjoy the day.
Attire: The bride wore an ivory lace high-low Sottero and Midgley Macie ballgown with an enhanced sweetheart neckline. A champagnecolored belt designed by Allure Bridals was tied in the back in a large bow. White peep-toe shoes by Audrey Brooke were adorned with small silver rhinestones and served as her “something new.” Her “something old” was her mother’s diamond tennis bracelet. Her “something borrowed” was the veil she forgot to bring to the venue! Her “something blue” was her mother's garter. Bridesmaids wore dresses by B. Darlin and their choice of gold strappy flats or heels. They also wore Kendra Scott Ella style earrings, a gift from the bride. The groom and groomsmen wore navy slim-fit suits by J. Ferrar, inspired by a photo of Ryan Gosling that the groom found online. The groom also wore a white/pearl colored neck tie, a colorful pair of socks from Express, and Cole Haan caramel wingtip dress shoes. Groomsmen also wore caramel leather dress shoes and matching belts. They were gifted navy ties and Fossil watches with a caramel leather band. Bridal party: Parents of the bride, Jorge and Melissa Ortiz, joined parents of the groom, Michael and Linda Toth, in witnessing the union of their children. Caitlin Ortiz, the bride’s younger sister, served as maid of honor. Julia

beige roses, peach stock, peach hypericum berries and seeded eucalyptus to adorn the gazebo arch under which the couple exchanged simple vows. Six Mason jars hung along the aisles (one in front row, middle row and last row) filled with white hydrangeas, peach stock, white waxflower and a wrap neck in twine. Top Wedding Moments: According to the bride, “Our first kiss as man and wife was magical!” According to the groom, “Seeing my beautiful bride for the first time during our first look and then watching her walk down the aisle were my favorite moments.” Also notable during the walk down the aisle was the guitar/cello duo playing “Sweet Child O' Mine” by Guns N Roses, which was a special surprise for the
Both the bride and groom focused on the enjoyment of their guests in an informal setting that allowed everyone to dine, dance and mingle in comfort. A family friend gifted the couple koozies, which were perfect wedding favors with a backstory: they showcased a stick figure of the couple that the bride had been drawing since the beginning of their relationship. Dances: When the couple first started dating, they heard the song “Amazed” by Lonestar and recaptured that moment during their first dance. The father of the bride was inspired by the YouTube video of “I Loved Her First” by Heartland and suggested it for the dance with his daughter. The mother of the groom chose “Life's a Dance” by John Michael Montgomery for a very emotional dance with her son. Guests were treated to an eclectic assortment of two-stepping music and line dances, including Copperhead Road, Cupid Shuffle and the Wobble. A live band, 100 Miles Gone, deejayed in between sets and took specific song requests. The groom, a reluctant dancer, became a “dancing machine” and didn’t want to leave the dance floor! Reception Decor: The bride favored a “wildflower-flowerbox-gardenesque” outdoor theme and chose table candelabra arrangements with the same flowers that adorned the gazebo. The flowers were also scattered throughout the floor of the venue. As a personal touch, the bride provided her

he rains immersed Houston and other Texas cities in recent weeks, giving Harris County its wettest spring on record and creating trying times for families and businesses that sustained flooding and even loss of life. Now Houston can embrace a more navigable reign – one that has it atop the U-Haul Top 10 U.S. Destination Cities rankings for a sixth consecutive year. Houston has been named the No. 1 destination for 2014, meaning it was the top drop-off location for one-way U-Haul truck rentals for the past calendar year. The migration report was compiled from more than 1.7 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions in 2014. All U.S. cities were considered, regardless of size. While migration trends don’t correlate directly to a city’s population or economic growth, they are a strong gauge as to how well cities are attracting new residents. Houston has been attracting do-it-yourself movers by the truckloads since it took over the top spot in 2009. The U-Haul report echoes Forbes’ annual America’s FastGrowing Cities report from January 2015, which ranked Greater Houston No. 1. “This accolade is a testament to Houston’s reputation as a city of opportunity,” said
Bob Harvey, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership. “Whether you are looking for a great job, affordable housing options, an outstanding quality of life, or all of the above, Houston is a city with limitless opportunities. “We are pleased to see Houston earn the No. 1 spot on U-Haul’s Top 10 U.S. Destination Cities for the sixth consecutive year.” Three southern Texas cities made the destination countdown with San Antonio fourth and Austin seventh. Houston held off Chicago and Las Vegas for the top spot. A cutting-edge medical sector, collection of celebrated tech companies and established energy giants have sustained a strong economy in Houston’s nine-county metropolitan area – even with a slumping oil market that has eliminated some jobs. College graduates are making Houston a top relocation choice, according to a recent report in the New York Times. “Houston seems to grow by the minute,” said Matt Merrill, marketing company president of U-Haul Company of West Houston. “There are new apartments, housing communities, high-rise office buildings, restaurants and small businesses opening everyday. Exxon is currently building a huge complex to relocate families here.➝ Katy-Fulshear Lifestyles & Homes | July 2015 |

Having two major airports allows for quick travel with many direct flights across America. For families or singles, it’s a great place to live because there is anything and everything here. If you can dream it, it exists in Houston.” Troy Pelkey, a 23-year Houston transplant and owner of commercial truck repair shop Cemco Services Company, joined the U-Haul dealer network in 2014. He noted that widespread growth has its pros and cons. “I moved to the suburbs and it’s not really the suburbs anymore – it’s another mini-Houston coming in with all the building going on,” said Pelkey, whose business is relocating to 6127 Aldine Bender next month. “I remember when the infrastructure of the city wasn’t very nice, but over the last 10 years, they’re tearing down the ugly, old buildings and making townhouses or new office buildings that are appealing to the eye. “The cost of living is great here. You get more for your money than just about anywhere in terms of housing and land value. The taxes are real good. And I like Texas. The people are the best part. They’re pretty friendly considering how big a city it is.” In addition to its universities, professional sports and entertainment options, and expanding rail system to help counter the traffic gridlock, Houston is known for the resilience and perseverance of its caring people. The May floods were not the first natural disaster to strike The Bayou City, nor will they be the last. U-Haul sympathizes with those who suffered losses and is offering 30 days of free self-storage to anyone in the area affected by the storms. “Locally, we have had one U-Haul store destroyed by a tornado and a storage facility that flooded from the rising flood water,” Merrill said. “In these times is when you see the true dedication of our employees to our customers. U-Haul had moving helpers, free boxes and plenty of staff on hand to help our customers during these unfortunate times. “Some customers are coming in to take advantage of the 30 days of free self-storage and can’t believe there isn’t a catch. This is another way we can say thank to residents of this great area for allowing UHaul to be in business for 70 years now.” l

Cross Creek Ranch in Fulshear doubled its sales a little more than two years after the development was acquired by The Johnson Development Corp.
‹Cross Creek Ranch Celebrates 2,000th Home Sale It took Cross Creek Ranch in the City of Fulshear five and a half years to reach a milestone 1,000 home sales. Now a little more than two years after The Johnson Development Corp. acquired Cross Creek Ranch, the development has doubled that number, with more than 2,000 homes sold in the community. Putting the community over the 2,000 home mark are Troy and Amy Bozeman, who bought a Highland Homes design this spring. Relocating from Louisiana for work, the Bozemans chose Cross Creek Ranch after scouring communities from Katy to Humble. “My husband will be working from home, so we have flexibility in where we live,” Amy said. “We searched every neighborhood from Katy to Humble and selected Cross Creek Ranch because of the Katy school district and easy access to the Westpark Tollway. Plus, we just fell in love with the obvious quality of the subdivision and Highland Homes.” General manager Rob Bamford says he expects home sales in Cross Creek Ranch to remain strong as buyers are attracted to the development’s generous list of amenities and proximity to the Energy Corridor, the Grand Parkway and a future extension of Westpark Tollroad. “With a water park, fitness center, disc golf course, a spray park, lap pool, dog park, Flewellen Creek Nature Preserve and a boardwalk that crisscrosses a 50-acre natural habitat, residents find plenty to do in Cross Creek Ranch,” he said. With 418 home sales in 2014, Cross Creek Ranch was No. 5 on the list of top-selling Houston developments and ranked among the nation’s top 20 master-planned communities. More than 1,840 families call Cross Creek Ranch home, with the number of
occupied homes expected to be near 2,000 when the Bozemans move in near the end of October with their children: a 5-year-old, 15-month-old and a newborn. Cross Creek Ranch began development in 2006 and celebrated its first home sale in 2008. The Johnson Development Corp. purchased the property from Trendmaker Homes in 2012. It was also named the Greater Houston Builders Association’s Master-Planned Community of the Year for a second time in 2014. Eleven builders have opened 19 model homes in Cross Creek Ranch, offering an array of executive and luxury home designs priced from the $280,000s.

PLant the Milkweed and help save the
Monarch No MILKWEED No MONARCH The Monarch Butterfly is in trouble. Why? Because Milkweed plants are disappearing across the United States. Milkweed is the only plant on which the monarch lays its eggs and the only plant the monarch caterpillar will eat. Monarch butterflies hibernating in Mexico plunged to its lowest level ever. In early 2014, monarch butterflies were found in only 1.7 acres – compared to a high of 45 acres in 1996.
What’s Happening to Milkweed? The Milkweed plant was once common among roadsides, grasslands and cornfields from Mexico to Canada and all across the U.S. but now it is being threatened by urban development and other factors.
What Can You Do? Plant Milkweed in your yard or garden. You will be rewarded not only with the knowledge that you are making a difference, but by attracting monarchs to enjoy. Avoid spraying pesticides in your yard. Monarchs are insects, and so insecticides will kill them. Learn how to garden organically. Create a Monarch Habitat. The National Wildlife Association (nwa.org) can teach you how to turn any outdoor space into a complete habitat for monarch. Entire communities are launching efforts to create monarch habitat. eep Texas Beautiful and The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have selected artwork by five students from the Houston area to appear in the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas® Calendar. The calendar will include 13 winning entries from across the state in the annual Don’t mess with Texas® Elementary School Art Contest. Katy-area students whose artwork was selected include fourthgrader Jessica Chai of Roosevelt Alexander Elementary School and fifth-grader Annabelle Du of James E. Williams Elementary School. The entries were five of 8,228 entries received by Keep Texas Beautiful and TxDOT from elementary schools from across the state. Each winning artwork is assigned to a month and will be placed in the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas® calendar. Each winner also will receive an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B and Central Market. The three other Houston-area students whose work was selected are third-grader Anne Christiono of Cornerstone Elementary in Sugar Land; fifth-grader Vivian Wang, also of Cornerstone Elementary, and third-grader Bryan Garcia of Sneed Elementary in Houston. “It’s incredible how much we can learn from the thought and creativity of students,” said De J. our part to ensure that our beautiful state also continues to shine.” TxDOT and Keep Texas Beautiful organize the contest as a way to motivate young Texans to help keep the state beautiful by not littering and by encouraging others to protect Texas roadways and its environment from unsightly trash. The contest was open to Texas elementary school students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade and sponsored by H-E-B and Central Market. Students submitted their best designs that promoted the Don’t mess with Texas® or Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention slogans. “I am always amazed at the artistic talent demonstrated by some of our state’s youngest residents,” said Cathie Gail, executive director of Keep Texas Beautiful. “We had a tough time narrowing the entries down to just 13 winning designs. Their hard work on these beautiful entries helps us remind all Texans about the importance of putting litter where it belongs — in a trash can — and not along our roadsides.” All student winners will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful websites and at the 2015 Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference. Teachers representing students who produce the top 13 designs will win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift card. Visit DontMesswithTexas.org for more information.l

FLOORS The Water Tower By Carol Adams he rice dryers are the largest and most recognizable landmark of historic Katy. But the water tower has also been a landmark since it was built in 1950. Early settlers dug water wells on their own property. As the town grew a few individuals had large wells and provided water to the other homes and businesses in the area. A town well was installed near the corner of First Street and Avenue C sometime before 1920. When Katy residents voted to become a municipality in 1945, one of the first things the new administration did was establish a waterworks department. That department slowly laid water and sewer main lines. In 1950 city council created an ordinance requiring city residents to connect to the new lines and built the water tower to supply the anticipated demand. An additional 100,000gallon ground reserve tank was installed for firefighting. Sixty-five years later, that tower still stands. It is 126 feet tall and holds a 100,000-gallon steel storage tank. Over the years the tower has been painted many times. In 1954 the Katy Volunteer Fire Department began decorating it for Christmas with lights and a small wooden cross. Residents loved the cross so much that a new one was installed to remain up all year. The new cross was 16 feet tall and illuminated with neon lights. It was intended to let motorists passing through on SH-90 know that Katy was a Christian town. The cross was illuminated for the first time on Good Friday, 1957. That cross was hit by lightning in 1960 and replaced with one that had traditional bulbs that were easier to replace or repair. The cross remained for over a decade, but even after it was removed the tower had become a symbol of pride for the small community. In the early 1980s, the Volunteer Fire Department would climb and rappel the tower as an entertainment feature for the Rice Harvest Festival. The city painted a tiger (the mascot for Katy High School) on the tank and began adding the years the team won state football championships in 1997. The City of Katy is currently implementing a plan to redevelop the town square. The tank no longer contributes significant water to the city's system and the ground storage tank is slated for removal. The tank will remain, however, as a reminder of our history and continue as a muchloved landmark. l
