FOR LEARNI THAT LIVES AT FHSU, WE INVEST IN OURSELVES BY INVESTING IN EACH OTHER. OUR UNIQUE AND VIBRANT LEARNING COMMUNITIES UNITE FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS THROUGH COMMON INTERESTS, CREATING STRONG, TRANSFORMATIVE NETWORKS OF SUPPORT. For Nick Glassman ’18, the Everybody’s Business learning community brought his accounting degree to life. “I was given the opportunity to serve as an academic leader during a community trip to St. Maarten. I thought it would be one short trip, but I ended up returning for three straight years. I worked with and learned from local businesses, guided by FHSU’s dedicated faculty. To be honest, I assumed my accounting program would be dry and intellectual, but this was anything but.

My experiences on St. Maarten were unforgettable and breathtaking. My eyes were opened to a completely new way of life and how businesses function so differently in an international environment. During those three trips, I worked with a real estate company, a car repair service, an accounting firm and two different organic farmers—and I learned so much from each business. This last trip had the greatest impact on my growth as a student and as a person. The island was hit hard by Hurricane Irma, but during my visit, I witnessed such incredible resilience. The St. Maarten residents got right back up on their feet to build their businesses and lives better than before. I am so grateful FHSU gave me the opportunity to learn in this amazing place, and I cannot wait to return someday to work with them again.”

I came to FHSU for the Applied Technology program, and I truly believe it is one of the strongest programs on campus. My professors have really taken the time to get to know me. This last semester I came to class early every day to have coffee with a few of my professors and even the head of the department. Honestly, I never thought it was possible to have such a close connection with such brilliant professors.

FOR YOUR GOALS ERNESTOR DE LA ROSA ’12 IS THE TEXTBOOK DEFINITION OF A SUCCESS STORY. Though he spoke no English when he immigrated to the United States at 13, he quickly picked up the language and graduated high school with hopes of pursuing a career in public service. As a political science major at Fort Hays State University, Ernestor joined a number of clubs and organizations—an experience that put his goals within reach.

I participated in Model United Nations, Young Democrats and the Hispanic American Leadership Organization, all of which developed my passion for community involvement and showed me the power of politics. My FHSU education equipped me for graduate school, and eventually for my dream career path as Dodge City’s Director of

Human Resources and Assistant City Manager. I appreciate that my time at FHSU was truly a full experience. Campus life was busy and engaging, classes were small and personal, the professors were brilliant and committed and the community was supportive in meaningful ways. Attending FHSU fully prepared me for graduate school and beyond.
