ONE IN A

BILLION

Right now 1.02 billion people on the planet are chronically hungry.

They are not merely a number – they are people. Each is One in a Billion. Their hunger goes beyond food they’re hungry for change.

Hungry for change?

The problem: 1.02 billion people on the planet are chronically hungry*. That’s almost 1 in 6 of the world’s population. Each of us is called upon to help to pull those living in the shadows of this silent crisis out into the light. Each of us is called to raise our voice and take action. “Speak up for the people who have no voice, for the rights of all the down-and-outers. Speak out for justice! Stand up for the poor and destitute!” – Proverbs 31:8 (The Message) They’re not just statistics; each one is just like you... One in a Billion. Each is chosen, called, each with hopes and dreams. Hunger shouldn’t be a reality in 2010. We’re hungry for change. Are you? What can I do? Buy a World Vision Smiles item today to help those affected by this silent crisis. The gift of emergency food for children for $40 helps us respond to urgent needs. Or buy a duck for $20 and support World Vision’s long-term agriculture and environment work. You can also sponsor a child for $43 a month which will help to bring life-changing benefits to communities trapped by this crisis. “Partner with World Vision today and be part of a movement shining light into darkness.” – Neil Smith *www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/20568

I hear people ask the question over and over today: “What is the relevancy of the Cross of Jesus Christ? What does it matter to me that Christ died on a Cross over two thousand years ago? How does His Cross add any value to my life and to who I am and to who I want to be? What difference does it make whether Jesus rose from the dead? Even if He did, I’m going to go to work tomorrow just as I always have. It’s not going to make any difference to me or to my family, or to my attitudes or my daily life. So why should I care about the so-called Good News ” Perhaps it’s a question you’ve asked yourself or someone else and never received an answer to that you considered to be satisfactory. If that’s the case, I want to answer your question once and for all, but not in the way you might be expecting. I could tell you that the Cross of Christ is the hinge of all the world’s history, and that it is without a shadow of a doubt the most crucial historical event that is the foundation for your relationship with God. We’ve created a holiday to acknowledge and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus—and I believe the foundation for this holiday to be true. But to start there is to try to present the solution before you understand the problem. If all you’ve heard is a list of what someone thought were solutions, it is very anticlimactic for me or anyone else to point first to the power of the Cross and the resurrection of Jesus until you are aware of the universal human dilemma—the degradation and the depravity of the human soul, which includes mine and yours and everyone else’s—the answer is irrelevant. Nobody searches for an answer if they don’t have a question. No one seeks a solution if they’re not convinced they have a problem. I know that was true in my life. Until I came to see what the true nature of my heart was like, the Cross just didn’t make a lot of sense. But in the process of discovering who I really was, of seeing the real me, I found my soul crying out for answers. So before I focus on the consequences of the Cross, I will shine a light on the dilemma that brought us to the point where we need the Cross in the first place.

Bishop T.D. Jakes shares with us from his brand new book available at this conference.

Understand Who God Is Comprehending why and how the Cross of Christ makes a difference in our lives starts with an understanding of who God is. One of the first things we need to understand is that our God is eternal, He is an everlasting and dateless God—One who is without a beginning or an end of days. King David said, “From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Psalm 90:2). He rules in eternity, which is timeless—there are no days, no weeks, no hours, no seconds. God simply exists in eternity. Note Whenever God forms a thing, He will fill it. Before God made man, the Bible says He formed the earth, and then through a divine process He began to fill the earth with good things. There is a life principle here that I don’t want you to miss: Whenever God forms a thing, He will fill it. That is as true for your life today as it was in His original creation. You don’t need to worry about filling your life, because whenever God forms something, He will fill it.

• • • • •

He formed the earth and then filled it with abundant life. He formed the sea and then filled it with great whales and fish. He formed the open firmament and filled it with birds. He formed the dry land and filled it with grasses and trees. Finally, He formed man and breathed in him the breath of life so that he became a living soul, placing man in time.

The concept of time requires some stretching of your mind, but consider time as a sliver between two eternities—eternity future and eternity past. Thomas Carlyle said, “One life—a little gleam of time between two eternities.” Man was placed in a sliver of time, just for a moment really, an interlude, an interruption between eternity future and eternity past. If we can capture the thought of eternity in our minds, it will change … • • • • •

the way we view God, the way we view life, the way we view ourselves, the way we face problems, and the way we deal with death.

If we begin to comprehend that all of the business and interaction we are experiencing in this present world is merely a brief interruption in an ongoing relation of eternity, our perspective on all of life will change. If we come to grips with the fact that we are eternal, and that we are going to live somewhere forever—though we may not be able to define eternity so as to satisfy a metaphysician—we will be amazed and transformed by the wonder of the meaning of life. We don’t have to be theologians to understand that we are eternal. Science informs us that all matter is eternal, and that it continues to exist in one form or another. It then corroborates what the Bible validates: “Before I formed thee in the

belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). That’s what God told Jeremiah: “Before you even got here, I picked you out. I had predestined you. I had predetermined you. I prearranged for you to be who you are and where you are at this particular window of time.” That is not just true for the prophet Jeremiah. The same is true for you and me! God is amazing! God is astounding! God is incredible! He is power and purpose. He is the fusion of energy and intellect. He is a strategist, and He has a plan for everything, including our lives. What I love about Him is not just that He is powerful—our God is a thinking God, a logos God, an intelligent God, and He has a plan. That gives me joy, because sometimes I don’t have a plan; and when I do have a plan, oftentimes my plan goes awry. But it helps me understand that when my life seems chaotic and crazy, that God has a strategy for my life. According to Romans 8:28, I can rest assured that “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” You and I are called out of eternity into time according to His purpose and plan.

SOCIAL JUSTICE / JUSTICE GENERATION As we move into 2010, global and local issues of social injustice continue to overwhelm society. The church, however, is rising up with a united voice saying “we can make a change”. God’s heart is broken as He sees His babies dying of hunger in Africa, single parent families living in squalor in India, and His little children sold as prostitutes in Asia. Every human on this planet has a God-given destiny, a purpose and the right to a life of favour, blessing and abundance. As we know millions do not live this life. But things are changing. God has placed Kingdom tools within our hands to see justice done across this earth. So if you want to be part of this change, don’t miss this session as you find out practical keys that will help you be the hands and feet of Jesus.

JOTH HUNT producer / sound engineer What are your main roles within the creative team at Planetshakers? Producing albums, song writing, worship leading – basically all the audio that comes out of Planetshakers comes through me. I’ve also just started mentoring a lot of young guys who are interested in learning this craft. The Planetshakers Creative Team share about new studios, new albums and what they love about being part of the creative engine at Planetshakers.

The new album “Even Greater” is out now. Tell us about your involvement in the album? Well, I produced this album. It was quite a journey. Preparation leading up to this live recording was amazing. We got together to rehearse and just ended up worshiping so we knew it was going to be a special album. When the day came, God’s presence was awesome, the church was singing louder than ever, worshipping more passionately than ever. I couldn’t wait to go back to the studio and have a listen. On Tuesday morning I loaded up the session, only to find that every eight seconds on every track there was a glitch. I could not believe it. I knew this was going to be a powerful album and I knew the enemy didn’t want it to happen, so I sat there for days and days, editing away until every single glitch was gone. So take that devil. What are you working on at the moment? After conference we will be getting our heads together to come up with some awesome stuff for Beautiful Woman 2010. So I hear Planetshakers have got new studios? Yes, the long awaited PS studios are now in motion, woo hoo! The studios consist of our Studio A Mix Room, Drum Room, two Vocal Booths and Studio B Mix Room. All fitted with Digidesign Protools Systems. Life is good. What’s your favourite piece of equipment at the moment? It would have to be my Line 6 Pod XthreeLive. I know I always go on about Line 6, but seriously it makes my life so much easier for church, touring, etc. Also, my iPhone. I can now sync my iPhone to my Protools System and control the transport window from my phone. What couldn’t you live without? Well literally, I couldn’t live without food. Water. And clothes. What are you looking forward to most in 20TEN? I’m looking forward to seeing our church explode even more, as it is the year of favour. Also, in three weeks time I’m marrying the love of my life.

14

MIKE WEBBER creative director Apart from being a great drummer in the Planetshakers Band and touring, you are also the Creative Director of Planetshakers. Tell us about your role in the team. My role is very diverse. The main goal is to pastor the team and keep everyone’s hearts in the right spot. This is a challenge with creative people because so often we can fall into the trap of finding our identity in what we do, not in who God has called us to be. Beyond that, I manage the creative staff, (who are the best people in the world, I might add) and make sure we are meeting our deadlines on everything from live events to albums to design tasks. I guess I’m kinda like the glue that keeps everything together… Preparing for Planetshakers Conference must be a huge project. When do you start planning for this? We are pretty much living a year ahead of ourselves. From a design and creative point of view we’re already pumping out next year’s elements while you’re all still enjoying this year’s conference! The music and production comes together a bit closer to the event, but I would say the pace definitely picks up three or four “Humility is the months out from conference.

As well as your role as Creative Director, you also tour extensively. How do you juggle both roles? Like I mentioned earlier, our creative staff are great. We just set things out in a timeline and they do their best to meet the deadlines. If we can’t manage things we have a team of wonderful volunteers who are always willing to join us in losing some sleep to make sure things get done. Also, now with email on your phone, Skype and online project collaboration we can communicate quite well even when some of us are overseas. What’s it like looking after the creative team? Are they a handful? Not at all. I love creative people! How boring would life be if we didn’t get to experience the highs and lows together? I love creating environments where people can be free to express themselves and step out in the areas God has gifted them and stirred a passion for serving Him with. I realise that there is no better pastor than the Holy Spirit, so my goal is to get out of the way and let him touch people’s hearts. He can turn any situation around in an instant, and do in a moment what I could never do in a lifetime of coffees…

key to tapping into God’s anointing, because the anointing has nothing to do with you, but is all to do with who God chooses. ”

What other projects do you have running at the same time? Being Planetshakers, there’s always an album project on the go. I can’t remember the last time we released an album and didn’t already have the next one recorded and waiting to be produced. I love that about Ps Russell and Sam; they are always encouraging us to be writing songs about what God is saying now, and to prophetically speak into what is to come. We are already in preparation for Beautiful Woman which is in August, then Mighty Men in October, album recording in November and then another season of Christmas items. All these things are on the radar already. Then we slot in a few tours, church every week, running an Urban Life group and you can understand why I don’t often get to mow my lawn (you should see it!).

Any advice to other Creative Directors on how to lead a great creative team? Understand that you can’t do it, but God in you can. The greatest acknowledgement we can make as leaders is our total reliance upon the Holy Spirit. Humility is the key to tapping into God’s anointing, because the anointing has nothing to do with you, but is all to do with who God chooses. The Bible tells us in James 4:6 that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. So the key to doing anything great for God is humility. I guess to put that in the context of a creative team; if we can lead people in a way that promotes humility in their lives, and acknowledges God as the source of everything they need, then we will be on the right track to being used to do great things for His Kingdom.

15

In your field of work you’re constantly coming up with new ideas, looks and concepts. How do you get your inspiration? A lot of it comes from God, through spending time with Him, hearing His voice, seeking His direction. He has a pretty cool folio & showreel! :) Also from my Senior Pastors Russell & Sam. Learning from them & interpreting their vision. Also, I keep up to date with new trends and styles in the design world. I really believe the Church should be leading the way in all things, especially in the creative fields!

MIKE PILMER design manager Can you tell us a little about your role in the creative team? I’m the Design Manager here at Shakers. I do a lot of designing, editing, filming and oversee the design side of things within the ministry. I also play guitar in the band and write a few songs. Tell us about your background? Did you study design? Yeah, I did a Bachelor of Design (Multimedia) at Swinburne University before joining the team. The course covered just about everything to do with visual and motion graphics, video, web and animation. What are some of the projects you’re working on at the moment? I’ve just finished the album artwork for ‘Even Greater’ (which is released here at conference), also working on the 2010 Beautiful Woman promotions, a creative documentary and various other projects for Planetshakers. I also just got married!! It’s all happening!!!!!

Apart from the team, do you have others that help you out? Along with the creative staff we have a great team of volunteers and interns who give up their time and serve in different areas within the team. We also sometimes outsource work, depending on the project and how busy we are at the time. What’s the best thing about being part of the creative team at Planetshakers? Doing what you love every day and knowing you’re making a difference, forwarding the Kingdom and changing people’s lives is a pretty cool thing. It’s an honour to serve under the greatest senior pastors and alongside an incredible team who are committed to seeing a difference in this city and in the nations. The opportunities we have as a team and as individuals here at Planetshakers are life changing! Great importance within our team is placed on discipleship and challenging each other to go deeper and rise to new levels. If you’re feeling called to any area of ministry within the Church then you should check out Planetshakers College! I’ve heard the creative arts and media streams are not to be missed :)

ANDY // Since our youth camp in January this year, our faith has been so stirred by watching kids encounter God. It’s so simple to them— that’s actually all they want—an encounter with God. It’s not about the program or trying to do things the coolest or anything—once they have had a taste of God, that’s really all they want. If we can get them in the presence of God, we know they are going to be changed. And changed people change people. How important is it to bring your youth along to big events and conferences? RUDY // It helps us to see that there is so much more going on in our city, our country and in the world than just what we can see in our day to day lives. Jesus has called us to make disciples in Judea, Jerusalem and to the ends of the earth. I love watching every one of our young people in big events get this revelation that God wants to use them in their city, their state, their nation and the nations of the world.

We caught up with the Planetshakers Youth Pastors to hear how a generation of radical young people are rising up.

What’s your vision for the youth generation of Australia? BEN // Teenagers live radical lives; I have a heart to see that channelled into God, to see them step out and do radical things for God. The teenagers of Australia at the moment are going to be the ones who change their schools, their educational system, the way classes are structured – they are going to bring change to all areas of society that they are living in. There are some exciting things happening in the youth of today. What are some of the changes you’ve witnessed over the past few years? ANDY // This generation is quite raw. There’s a real simplicity to their faith. Also, we are seeing so many schools open up and even ask for help in terms of bullying, behavioural problems, depression and self harm because they’ve tried everything else and nothing is working. Sometimes, the darker things get, the brighter the light is. In one particular school, a welfare coordinator gets kids out of class to hang with us, because he’s seen for himself that when they hang out with us, everything seems to change.

“It’s not about the program or trying to do things the coolest or anything — once they have had a taste of God, that’s really all they want.”

What is the craziest activity you’ve heard of or been a part of at a youth event or camp? ANDY // One night at youth last year, we did this game during the service, from the stage. Basically, we had three fishing lines coming down from the stage into the crowd with little harnesses attached to three live crabs. We named them Gary, Jeremy and Cameron. We got kids to race the crabs down these fishing lines to the crowd and the first over the finish line won. But what we didn’t tell them is that when we practised it before-hand, one of the harnesses broke and one of the crabs fell to his doom and skidded about 30 metres on the floor! What’s some advice for youth pastors either in small or larger churches? BEN // My advice would be, don’t get too distracted but stay focused on your role as a youth pastor, which is to disciple young people. Also, guard your own spirit and build your own relationship with God. The level of your relationship with God will filter down through the youth ministry, because the revelation you get will feed your kids. Whenever you find that you are comfortable in your life, that’s when you need to step out. We need to be in a place where we are depending completely on God and nothing else — that’s where youth pastors need to be.

As youth pastors – why is it you do what you do? RUDY // Watching God come in and revolutionize people’s lives, despite their upbringing or their background, is incredible. Teenagers often have that rawness about them which allows them to step up to situations and step out in faith, where many of us, that are older, would step back in fear. It is the most rewarding thing in my life to watch a young person full of passion step out and do something phenomenal with Jesus.

What are your expectations for PSTEN? BEN // I am praying and believing that each one of our young people are going to walk in that place with God and get a revelation of His favour. I believe this conference is going to take our youth ministry to the next level. We are praying that this is going to be a huge turning point in the young people in our youth ministry.

What do you see happen in young people during and after a youth camp? RUDY // Our youth camp is very central in our calendar. It’s something that young people look forward to months in advance. And I know during camp people always encounter God. The great thing to see though, is after a youth camp—God has done such a great work in our lives that we see young people go back into their school, their world and carry on what God did on those few days at camp.”

Finally, any funny or random youth stories you want to share? ANDY // At our youth camp a couple of years ago, there was a really steep hill next to the food hall. Three of our boys stole the serving trays from the food hall and surfed them down the mud on the hill until one of the canteen ladies came out and tried to chase them. She ended up rolling down the mud hill and so the boys ran away and jumped in a canoe, paddled across the lake and hid in the bushes. Yeah it was pretty funny.

Nicole Monteduro is part of the Planetshakers Worship Band and has a wealth of vocal experience and training. At age 9, she began her vocal training and following 13 years of classical lessons she completed her AMEB examinations. After answering the call of God, she moved to Melbourne from country Victoria and became a part of Planetshakers City Church. Nicole is a pioneer member of the creative team and has been singing and touring with the Planetshakers Band for the past 5 years. She continues to develop her voice through voice lessons with Planetshakers School of Creative Arts for over the past 2 years. With a beautiful heart of worship and a great passion for the presence of God, Nicole loves to see people changed through an encounter with our wonderful God.

Touring the world with Planetshakers and leading others in praise and worship must be an awesome experience; what do you love the most about it? Everywhere around the world we go I’m constantly blown away by the fact that the presence of God TOTALLY overrides any language or cultural barrier! We might not be able to speak to each other easily in our own native languages or understand certain traditions or cultures, but when we all stand unified in the Lord and lift His name high together His power moves regardless!! It’s awesome! It is the biggest privilege that WE get to take the sound of heaven all around the world – us Aussies from ‘Down Under’! Another thing I truly love is that everywhere we go we are always with locals so we get an authentic experience of the journey that each nation we visit is on (and we eat the yummiest food!!) AND…I could go on and on; it’s just an amazing privilege! You are a highly trained and experienced vocalist, what do you do to continue growing and developing as a singer? As a classically trained singer, I found I was often limited in the range of styles that I could sing. I began lessons with Planetshakers School of Creative Arts about 2 years ago to give me the flexibility to be able to change my sound to suit the style I need to sing.

I also do the thing that everyone dislikes – PRACTICE!! Listening to artists who have the sound I want really helps, and lately I’ve even taken up Pilates which is absolutely brilliant for singers as it connects your whole body! How do you think singing lessons have helped you prepare for the call God has on your life? It means I’m prepared and equipped practically. God gave me visions from an early age of what He had called me to do and so it’s my responsibility to be faithful and diligent with those visions. Being well trained means I’m capable in the natural so He can do the rest in the supernatural! When I’m worshipping, my attention is completely on Jesus rather than what my voice is doing or whether I sound like a buzz saw! There’s no distraction! If you could say anything to encourage people that have a gift in the creative arts what would it be? Be a faithful steward of what God has given you! Nurture and grow your gift diligently but without holding on too tight to it – it’s His gift anyway! But more than anything, always seek to glorify God, not just with what you can do but with your whole heart and soul.

USA It was purely amazing to see God touch the lives of so many school kids through Ps Reggie. His heart and dedication is truly inspiring to see. The long hours from dawn to evening, getting to as many schools as he possibly can, just to bring hope to the lost is breathtaking. Going into the schools, homeless shelters and rehab centers and seeing it first hand has changed my life. Witnessing the pain of so many people has driven me to want to do more. I can’t wait to go to my next missions trip. God is so awesome!!!

USA Travelling in America with Reggie was such an amazing honour. I am just going to let you know about the experience that broke me on this trip. We spent the day serving in a homeless shelter in Atlantic City. We prepared and served food to the unfortunate throughout the day. At night we held a rally where Reggie came and spoke. Sitting in there was one of the hardest things that I have ever done. Seeing how little they had, I remember looking at one lady and I thought to myself ‘everything she owns is in those bags’. But seeing their heart for God, how much they loved Him, it broke me, I was standing against the wall, tears streaming down my face, their hearts for God were just amazing. God did something that night, in them and in me, I will never forget that moment.

South Africa In January 2010, a team of 21 Australians ventured to South Africa to work with the Community Care arm of View Church, Cape Town. The team worked extremely hard and blew the expectations of the host church out of the water. The work was mainly carried out on the ENOZIPHO DAYCARE centre where the team cleared literally tones of dirt and rubbish, leveled out the yard and made a drainage system, scrubbed down and painted the new fence, looked after the children in the Daycare centre and then visited the township to pray for people in their homes. Whilst praying for people in the township, we saw some blind eyes open & people give their lives to Jesus. The team was able to provide funding for the Daycare centre to purchase a new jungle gym. The team had a great amount of fun and made a huge effort at making the centre a better place for the kids to play, but were also touched by the people as well.

“…the more we got around, the more we realised how great the influence of this church was in their own town. We couldn’t wait to be part of a church that had done so many great things in their community. We weren’t disappointed! This church knew how to praise God! They were passionate, they were powerful and they were loud!!” » Rudy Nikkerud «
