Several popular UT Arlington financial aid programs help buy down that cost. Among them: • Federal Pell grants, a need-based program for undergraduates. The 2009-2010 grants range from $976 to a maximum $5,350, boosted by money from the federal stimulus package. • Maverick Promise. This program provides free tuition and fees for Texas residents with family incomes of $65,000 or less. Recipients also must qualify for a Pell grant. (A third of UT Arlington undergraduates qualified for a Pell grant this year.)

In times of economic uncertainty, a college education is needed more than ever. It is also a manageable expense for students and families who know what financial assistance is available, financial aid experts say. A recent survey by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities found that 92 percent of members were increasing student-aid budgets for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Among those, the average increase was 10 percent. The trend holds true at The University of Texas at Arlington, where more than 60 percent of the 25,000 students received some level of financial aid in spring 2009. That number was up from 55 percent in the fall. “It is our mission to ensure that students receive a first-class education at UT-Arlington,” UT Arlington President James D. Spaniolo said. “We are making every effort to make it affordable, too.” UT Arlington distributed about $41 million in federal, state and institutional grants to students during the 2008-09 fiscal year, up 51 percent from 2004-05, when the university distributed about $27 million in assistance. University scholarship giving also has grown significantly, to about $14 million awarded to students this year compared with $8 million in 2004-05, said Karen Krause, UT Arlington’s financial aid director. But students must apply. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is available online at www.uta.edu/fao. Financial aid representatives are available to counsel prospective students and their families by calling 817-272-3561, Krause said. Her advice: “Plan ahead, and apply for admissions and financial aid by the published deadlines.” Students often overlook applying for scholarships offered by outside agencies, Krause said. This year, a full-time UT Arlington undergraduate student paid about $8,000 for tuition and fees, a price that compares favorably with other major public Texas institutions. By comparison, the average cost of tuition and fees at Texas four-year institutions was $8,438 in 2009-09, according to a study by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board.

• Texas Public Education Grants and Maverick Grants, needbased grants funded by tuition dollars that are returned to qualified students annually. • Work-Study awards. Eligible students are offered campusrelated jobs as part of their financial aid package so they can earn money to pay college-related expenses. The jobs typically require 15 to 18 hours a week. Hourly wages depend on the position and student qualifications. • Tuition installment plan/Enrollment loans. Students who opt for the installment plan pay a $20 fee and agree to pay tuition in three scheduled installments throughout the semester. Enrollment loans defer payments until later in the semester and are offered at low interest rates. • Federal Stafford loans. These subsidized loans are currently offered at a 5.3 percent interest rate. The University’s Financial Aid Office must begin this loan process for students. UT Arlington also awards academic scholarships to students who perform well on college entrance exams or who graduate in the Top 10 percent of their high school class. Current students who maintain a 3.5 GPA while completing 30 semester credit hours at UT Arlington also may earn enhanced scholarships. UT Arlington offers flat-rate tuition, meaning that full-time students pay for 12 semester credit hours. But if they choose to take a heavier course load, they won’t pay more. The University also has capped its tuition increase at 4.9 percent for next year, bringing the cost for a full-time student to about $8,544, a sum approved last year by the University of Texas System Board of Regents. “It is our hope that our comprehensive plan to help students afford to attend college will lessen the impact of such increases,” Spaniolo said. For more information, go to www.uta.edu/fao or call 817-272-3561.
