In today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for employees who have the analytical skills to perform not just one specific task, but a wide range of jobs across many disciplines. Those analytical skills are learned in a liberal arts education, said Dr. Allen Henderson, provost and senior vice president at Texas Wesleyan University. “A liberal arts education allows you to communicate effectively, think and understand information, get along with others and, very importantly, it helps you learn how to learn,” Dr. Henderson said. “These — along with a perspective on history and culture — are lifelong skills that develop a well-rounded citizen.”
A 2010 survey of employers conducted on behalf of the Association of Colleges and Universities found that 59 percent of employers are asking their employees to take on more responsibilities and a broader range of skills than before. Employers want staff members to analyze, understand and communicate, all in a blink of the mind’s eye. A 2007 National Association of Colleges and employers survey states that “the most important skill employers seek in job candidates is the ability to communicate effectively.” One’s success in the modern, informationbased economy will largely depend on an ability to communicate effectively across many different mediums.
Dr. Steven Daniell
“A liberal arts education teaches students to effectively use oral communication and written communication,” said Dr. Steven Daniell, dean of the School of Arts and Letters. “What’s more, it also teaches you how to effectively look for and discern information.” Texas Wesleyan offers small class sizes that allow students and professors to interact in a thoughtful, controlled environment. “That is not an advantage you would have in many other universities,” Dr. Daniell said.
The value of a well-rounded skill set Learning to think Those skills are in high demand by employers who want employees who can see beyond everyday tasks to the organization’s greater vision.
Where can one better learn effective communication than in a university setting that fosters and encourages the sharpening of observation and critical thought?
