Bragg’s Rights
A historical marker is finally placed, but MLK’s dream still remains out of reach.

It all happened really fast.
Emma Williams learned that her oldest son, a 20-year-old Black man named Bragg, was accused of killing members of a white family he worked for. Bragg was taken into custody and placed in the Hill County Jail.
The year was 1919. There was no radio and no TV. Many folks didn’t even have phones. Emma and her husband, Giles, lived in the country well outside of Hillsboro. Giles was away working. Bragg was intellectually disabled, and Emma couldn’t get reliable information on his status, the charges, or his case. She had to do something.
Emma, a mother of 15, instructed some of her older kids to watch the younger children and walked to Hillsboro with her youngest, baby Chester, on her hip. The journey was miles and took hours. And when Emma made it to the Hill County Jail, she learned that Bragg had been transferred to the Dallas County Jail until his trial.
No one had bothered to tell Emma, and her son Bragg didn’t even have legal representation yet.
Bragg was burned at the stake on January 20, 1919.
Emma’s oldest granddaughter, Fort Worth resident Letha Young, 84, didn’t learn about the lynching until she was in her early 20s, and the information she received was sparse.
“At the time it happened,” Letha said, “my grandmother didn’t have anybody to really explain to her what occurred. She just got bits and pieces of the story. She never got a chance to speak with Bragg. It was impossible for her to go to Dallas with all the other children she had to take care of, so she never really talked about it. My aunties say my grandmother lived to be 100, but she didn’t really know what happened to Bragg, just that he was lynched.”
To 59-year-old Fort Worth resident Tonya Camel, Letha’s daughter, the story was heartbreaking. “I thought, ‘How could people be this mean and this cruel?’ It was just a whole new level of hatred and injustice. My great-grandmother always had such a loving spirit, loved her family, cracked jokes, made us smile … she was just the sweetest person. But when you think about what she had to endure, how she maintained such a brave face in spite of it all, I can’t image the pain she carried all those years.”
Bragg was the only suspect in the murder of a white woman and her white 5-year-old. In the early afternoon of December 2, 1918, Annie
Wells and son Curtis were murdered at their home near Itasca (11 miles north of Hillsboro). The husband and father, George Wells, had gone to Hillsboro, and the older Wells children were in school not far away. Annie and Curtis’ attacker killed them, then carried their bodies into the Wells residence, setting it aflame to presumably destroy any evidence.
Neighbors and the older Wells children, who were on their way home from school, saw smoke in the direction of the home and retrieved the mother and son’s remains.
Described by the Waco News-Tribune as “tall and ungainly, and seemingly of low mentality,” Bragg was taken into custody. Before an official accusation was even made, a group of Hill County citizens attempted to lynch him, and the Hill County sheriff quickly transferred him to the McLennan County Jail, where a “Deputy Sheriff and Notary Public” procured an official confession that Bragg apparently signed an “X” to.
As lynch fever was in the air, Texas Gov. William P. Hobby received an urgent communication from an unidentified official in Hillsboro requesting Texas Rangers to protect Bragg. The January 13, 1919, message said that “the prisoner was in imminent danger of being lynched” and that the Hill County sheriff had stated that not only would he not stop white citizens from lynching Bragg but that he opposed any attempt by the Texas Rangers to protect the suspect. Gov. Hobby sent the Rangers, who transferred Bragg from Waco to Dallas, where he remained until his trial date.
District Court Judge H.B. Porter appointed two well-respected Hill County lawyers, Walter Collins and Albion M. Frazier, to serve as Bragg’s defense attorneys. Collins and Frazier did so under expressed protest.
On January 16, 1919, Bragg was escorted back to Hillsboro by the Texas Rangers, and his trial began. Considering the nature of the charges and the atmosphere of the community, Collins and Frazier requested a change of venue for the case, but their request was denied. Then, proving Collins and Frazier’s point, it took days to seat a jury.
The weather that January was bad (and coming to town was tough), but the citizenry’s predisposition was worse. When one Abbott citizen was questioned about his position on the case, his answer was succinct. “I’d hang him,” he said, his remark eliciting a round of laughter throughout the courtroom. Judge Porter cautioned the citizens in attendance, but the effect was negligible. An all-white male jury was eventually seated, but Bragg sat in the courtroom under the constant guard of six Texas Rangers.
Collins and Frazier entered a plea of “not guilty” for Bragg by reason of insanity. In terms of this plea, Collins and Frazier specifically noted that “malice aforethought” could not be demonstrated above the threshold of reasonable doubt. They suggested that Bragg’s intellectual capacity made him incapable of murdering someone with a “sedate, deliberate mind” and “pre-formed design” and pointed out that — considering the defendant’s intellectual disability — if Bragg had, as accused, slain Mrs. Wells, it could have been due only to a perceived threat as interpreted from his limited, cognitive perspective. This technically qualified the acts Bragg was accused of as self-defense. In

fact, an identical narrative was conveyed in a mid-January edition of the Hillsboro Mirror: Along the latter part of November, the Wells family was preparing to use their automobile, and a negro [Bragg Williams] working for them was starting the car, when he [accused] Mr. Well’s [sic] little boy with stopping the engine and the boy kicked him. The negro kicked him back and was discharged. On the second of December, while Mr. Wells was in Hillsboro the negro returned to the Wels [sic] home, and, according to the negro’s story, Mrs. Wells asked him what he wanted and he told her work. She asked him why he kicked her son and began abusing him and struck him in the head with a broom she held in her hand. He grabbed the broom and she reached for a gun standing on the gallery. The negro beat her over the head, knocking her down and then hit her over the head twice more. Mrs. Wells [sic] little four-year-old son then started for the school house which was only a few hundred yards away, and the negro started after him … hitting him over the head with the gun.
The Hillsboro Mirror’s account basically states that Mrs. Wells attacked Bragg with a broom, which, in a cognitively impaired person’s mind, may have constituted an imminent threat or have compelled a defensive response.
County Attorney Earl E. Carter and Assistant County Attorney H.P. Shead, however, were well aware of Bragg’s “low mentality” and prepared a professional refutation in advance to address the defense team’s plea. They brought in a Fort Worth alienist (the term for a psychiatrist or psychologist in those days) named W.L. Allison, and he undermined the defense team’s insanity plea.
Williams never testified in court, but a considerable cross-section of the community was aware of his reported confession. The prosecution subsequently produced two white witnesses who said they saw a Black man heading in the direction of the Wells residence before the murder and a young
Black girl, Smithy McDuffy, who testified that she saw a Black man running from the direction of the residence after she heard the screams of Annie Wells. In the end, the verdict was a foregone conclusion.
On Friday, Jan. 17, Bragg was convicted of murder, and the Texas Rangers were abruptly and surprisingly instructed to depart. Bragg — arguably because he did not fully grasp the implication or gravity of the court’s verdict or sentence — laughed. The defense team’s argument that Bragg was intellectually disabled was perhaps nowhere better illustrated than with his awkward laugh. The white-owned, white-run, and white-staffed newspapers at the time would have pounced on Bragg’s laugh if it had been in any way malicious, ill-intended, or otherwise contemptuous or defiant, but no such reporting exists.
On the morning of Monday, Jan. 20, the court reconvened for sentencing, and Judge Porter condemned Bragg to be hanged on Feb. 21.
What happened next was unexpected. Collins and Frazier had defended Bragg under protest, and his guilty verdict was popular. But once it was handed down and the death sentence imposed, the two attorneys deemed it unjust due to the defendant’s limited intellectual capacity and promptly requested a retrial. And when their petition for a new trial was denied, they immediately filed a notice of appeal to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
At approximately 11:45 a.m., a mob — upset by the appeal request and no longer in the mood for due process — assembled at the Hill County Jail and demanded Bragg be handed over. The jailers refused to give him up, so the mob battered the jail door down with a telephone pole, stormed the jail, and seized Bragg from his cell. The mob then dragged him to a concrete “safety first” post at the intersection of Elm and Covington streets on the southwest corner of the courthouse square and bound him securely.
A number of vigilantes quickly collected hay, wood, and coal and piled them around Bragg, dousing the combustibles in coal oil. A match was then applied, and the conflagration killed Bragg in a matter of minutes. Though he put up no resistance, he cried for help three times before the flames consumed him. Bragg’s body was left in the embers of the fire for hours. Photographs were taken of the atrocity (and one Hill County lawyer is said to have kept one of the images framed in his office for decades).
On January 21, Gov. Hobby denounced the lynching and initiated steps to investigate it. The next day, he sent a message to the Texas Legislature requesting a law that would put an end to mob violence and correct the assumption that members of white lynch mobs are not prosecutable. Hobby’s request was echoed by the NAACP, which sent a telegram to Hillsboro officials demanding punitive measures against participants in lynch mob.
On the same day, the San Antonio Express published a condemnation of the Hill County court’s decision to dismiss the Texas Rangers after the conviction. “If ever there was a fatal error of official judgment — whoever was responsible therefore — it was continued on page 5
in this case. If ever there was a warning of lynching attempts, it was in this case.”
On January 23, Hobby instructed the Texas attorney general’s office to initiate an investigation into Bragg’s lynching. A Hill County grand jury subsequently examined charges against members of the lynch mob but adjourned without returning bills of indictment. Consequently, the attorney general’s office filed a motion to cite 12 members of the lynch mob (Jud Rufus Beavers, Will Browning, Joe Ferguson, Cole Hammer, Earl Hobbs, Jim Hobbs, William Pinckney Hightower, E.L. Stroud, George Wells, William R. Wells, Poly Wilson, and Wiley Wilson) for contempt of court in regard to the Court of Criminal Appeals motion, because the vigilantes had lynched Bragg after his appeal had been filed and was technically pending.
It was a well-conceived attempt to prosecute members of the lynch mob in a higher court, especially as it was obvious that they would not face prosecution in Hill County. The motion was described as the first of its kind in Texas, but it, too, fell short. No action was taken on the motion in March or April, and the attempt quickly faded into obscurity.
As I’d written about Bragg Williams’ lynching in the past, I began working with Bragg’s family to pursue a historical marker acknowledging his horrific fate. Letha Young
perhaps expressed the family’s thoughts best at the time. “We don’t know what happened or whether Bragg was guilty or not. The whole thing makes me think of Hang ’Em High with Clint Eastwood. He gets hung by some vigilantes for something he didn’t do, but the sheriff comes along and cuts the hanging rope loose before Eastwood’s character dies. Where was the sheriff or the police when Bragg was being burned alive on the courthouse square?”
“We needed to do something,” added her daughter, Tonya, “because justice was never done and Uncle Bragg never received due process — and nobody had to answer for it.”
On March 8, 2022, several of us
Letha, Tonya, Letha’s then-68-year-old sister Crady Johnson (also a Fort Worth resident), and I — approached the Hill County Commissioners Court regarding our intentions, and though not enthusiastic, they didn’t seem hostile to our effort. County Judge Justin Lewis came over and talked to Letha, Crady, Tonya, and me and admitted that a cruel injustice was committed in Hill County after Bragg’s trial and that he didn’t think we would have any problems procuring a marker. We were skeptical, but Lewis seemed forthright and honest, and we were cautiously optimistic.
On April 5, we submitted the marker application (with Crady listed as the primary sponsor), and on April 18, the Hill County Marker Chair, Jana Burch, informed us that the marker narrative was: 1.) missing a context section, 2.) that there was no evidence that Williams was intellectually disabled, and that 3.) the application needed to be better documented. It frustrated us, but we dug

deeper, went to some lengths to substantiate claims of Williams’ cognitive impairment, and addressed the documentation issues. The marker application increased from 10 to 21 pages, and we resubmitted it.
Things happened really fast, again — and again without Bragg’s family’s knowledge. Months passed, and we heard no word. On November 2, 2022, I sent an email to the Texas Historical Commission attempting to confirm that our marker application had been passed along and that everything was
in order. I received a disturbing email in response to my query two days later:
The application for the Bragg Williams Lynching was received, however the application was canceled on October 10, 2022 due to the marker fee not being paid. We encourage you to re-apply next spring when our application period opens from March 1-May 15.
I was distraught. The marker application had been approved, and no one let us know (or made sure we knew).

I immediately phoned Crady and asked her if she’d received news of the application and she informed me she had not. I told her to check her email and contacted the Texas Historical Commission. They confirmed the email had been sent, and I told them we’d received no word and that the marker sponsor may have missed the email.
Crady called me back, letting me know that she had unwittingly received the email but missed it because she only checked her emails on her phone. She forwarded the notice to me:
Congratulations! The THC Commissioners have reviewed your application and staff will now be proceeding to the inscription. The marker fee is now due, payable and received in our office by 5pm CDT on Friday, September 16, 2022 — THC Marker Staff
Crady and I were shocked and wildly dismayed.
The Texas Historical Commission representative was sympathetic but didn’t know what could be done.
Crady and I were both frustrated beyond words. The marker application process had been tedious and frustrating, and we didn’t want to have to refile. The announcement of the marker application’s approval — which should have been a joyous occasion — was now a nightmare.
At this point, I sent a barrage of emails to the Texas Historical Commission and the Hill County Historical Commission. I wondered if it didn’t fall under the Hill County Historical Commission’s purview to make sure marker applicants were informed of the marker application decisions and particularly if they had been approved. The Hill County Historical Commission chair and the Hill County marker chair both informed us that they never received the email communicating the Bragg Williams Lynching marker application approval.
On November 7, we reached out to the THC expressing our concerns and imploring them to allow us to pay the marker fee and bring the arduous undertaking to fruition
Thankfully, on Monday, Nov. 14, 2022, the Texas Historical Commission re-sent the marker payment request, and remuneration was made immediately. A receipt of the payment’s processing was conveyed to us by email on November 15.
The Bragg Williams Lynching historical marker was delivered to Hill County on October 23, 2024, and it will be placed on the southwest corner of the courthouse lawn in Hillsboro. The marker is set to be dedicated on MLK Day, January 20, 2025. The dedication ceremony will start at 12:30 p.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. On that day and during that time, Bragg’s family and others will commemorate the atrocity he was a victim of and celebrate the strength and courage of his mother, Emma Williams. Though she never got to see justice done, she was the glue that held the entire family together.
“After Bragg was lynched,” Crady said, “my grandmother picked up and moved. She was determined to get her family to safety. Sometimes the trees we plant … we never get to enjoy their shade, but I think she would be very pleased by this historical marker.”
Letha agreed. “I feel like my grandmother has gotten some of the justice she never got when it happened, that someone has finally recognized that she and Bragg were human beings. I don’t know the full story, but my grandmother was never told the whole story. It was bad, and she lost her oldest son. She did the best she could with what she knew.”
When I asked Letha how she felt about other Texans not wanting this type of history discussed or recorded in history books, she was frank. “I’m quite sure there’s a lot of people that feel this type of history should stay buried, but it seems to me that this is God’s way of making some right of this wrong.”
Crady concurred. “This year, MLK Day falls on the same day as the 106th anniversary of my grand-uncle Bragg’s lynching. I think it’s fate. Fate has a way of bringing things together. Dr. King’s message was one of peace and the will to bring us all together. Who would have thought? It had to have been part of God’s plan.”
Was Bragg Williams guilty or innocent?
Was Bragg not guilty by reason of insanity? His well-respected and undoubtedly qualified local attorneys believed so, but Collins and Frazier were ignored and Bragg was denied due process, so we’ll probably never know.
A January 24, 1919, editorial in the Vernon Record, however, sounds eerily contemporary:
The law’s delay is responsible for most of this. New trials, secured as a result of a maize [sic] of technicalities which the legal fraternity has woven, appeals and reversals without regard to the guilt or innocence of the prisoner or whether an error committed had anything to do with the meeting [sic] out of justice — these things have given birth to a disrespect for law — and impatience of even necessary delays — that, unchecked, threaten imminently the perpetuity of free institutions.
“Due process of law” has ridden roughshod [over] justice and decency.
It’s easy to forget or misremember today that the cruelties and injustices endured by the forebears of our Black friends and neighbors were uncountable and limitless. Ultimately, they are now unknowable, and, finally, they are no longer prosecutable. But does our well-being today really require they be ignored and forgotten?
While recently discussing this issue with a Black friend of mine, someone I hold dear, they shared something no one had ever said to me before. “Black people know what’s been done to them. You don’t have to tell us. We know.”
It stung me.
Especially as a white person. A white man. I sensed it before, but no one had ever just come out and said it to me. And, in that moment, I knew it in no uncertain terms. Black people know. Black people know it
bone deep. My friend was essentially expressing the concept of generational trauma without polish or platitude.
Which raises an unavoidable question.
If Black people know what’s been done to them, why are we so insistent upon ignoring what was done to them?
Don’t bristle.
Don’t recoil contemptuously.
Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech was delivered on August 28, 1963, to more than 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. — 62 years ago, in fact, and most of us, even if we don’t remember much else of what he said or what he stood for, do remember the name of that speech. We even admire him for it, even if we can’t recall the content or context. We simply remember that he had a better vision for America, a vision where people from all races and creeds and walks of life lived together in greater harmony.
So, let’s be honest.
Are we anywhere close to Dr. King’s dream or vision?
Letha’s view on the subject is astute. “I think Dr. King was way ahead of his time. His speeches still address what’s going on in the world today.”
Crady’s opinion is one of obvious concern. “We have made some progress, but I think Dr. King would be disillusioned with us as a nation. Younger people are not being taught what he was trying to tell us. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future. His message is being lost across the board on both sides.”
During his campaign, President-elect Donald Trump promised to kill federal spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, reversing former President Joe Biden’s practices and vowing also to eliminate DEI government employees and “direct the Department of Justice to pursue federal civil rights cases against schools that continue to engage in racial discrimination.” Trump also proclaimed that universities would be held accountable for their persistence “in explicit unlawful discrimination under the guise of equity.” Vice President-elect JD Vance was one of the sponsors of the Dismantle DEI Act
in the Senate last summer, which mandates the elimination of all DEI programs and funding for “federal agencies, contractors that receive federal funding, organizations that receive federal grants, and educational accreditation agencies.”
Our own governor, Greg Abbott, tap-danced and stomped on programs that might have promoted Dr. King’s dream three and a half years ago, when he signed House Bill 3079 into law. HR 3079 bans honest conversations about race, censors how teachers teach current events, and bans students from receiving credit for participating in civic and/or civil rights activities.
Does anybody really think this is what MLK’s dream was about?
There’s no reason to mince words.
Too many white male politicians know Black people know what was done to them. They just don’t want their own kids or grandkids to know about it. They don’t care that Black men like Bragg Williams didn’t receive due process, and they don’t care about the pain Emma Williams carried until her death.
But why should it matter to them?
Americans from every color and creed and walk of life continue to elect or reelect politicians who prohibit a full embrace of Dr. King’s dream. Americans don’t even believe in America anymore. Why should their political representatives?
Some members of the Williams family have expressed concerns about attending the dedication ceremony, especially in the age of MAGA hatemongering, but Tonya’s faith is inviolate. “If God brought us through this and made the marker happen for Bragg and my great-grandmother, he’s gonna take us the rest of the way. They want us to be in fear, but the purpose of this marker is not to stir up any ill will. My grand-uncle has been dead for over 100 years. What’s done is done, but acknowledging the injustice that he was a victim of matters.”
And when I ask members of the Williams family about any advice they might have for citizens like them in towns and cities where other Black men were burned at the stake — Belton, Temple, Waxahachie, Tyler, Sherman, Paris, Rockwall, Greenville, Sulphur Springs, Kountze, and others — they are unequivocal.
“People do better when they know better,” Letha said.
“It may be a real fight,” Crady warned, “so anticipate setbacks. We were blessed. The Hill County Commissioners were on board. It won’t be the same everywhere.”
Tonya advised, “Have faith and press forward.”
Contrary to what too many white Americans and white Texans believe, historical acknowledgment of the atrocities Black Americans have suffered for most of their existence in this country is not about guilt-tripping whites or Black bragging rights. It is simply about human rights. Bragg’s rights. l

Art Is Not Porn
The recent removal of Sally Mann’s photographs from the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, following allegations of pornography by County Judge Tim O’Hare, is deeply concerning. This decision undermines the integrity of the arts and raises troubling questions about censorship and artistic freedom.
Sally Mann is an internationally acclaimed artist whose works have been exhibited in institutions like the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her photographs explore themes of family, memory, and time, offering profound emotional and intellectual depth. To dismiss them as pornography disregards their artistic value and diminishes our community’s cultural intelligence.
Art is inherently subjective, inviting diverse interpretations and emotions. Censorship dictated by a narrow ideological lens stifles creativity and intellectual growth. History warns us of the dangers of such actions, from the Nazi suppression of “degenerate art” to the censorship faced by groundbreaking artists like Robert Mapplethorpe. Today, their works are celebrated as vital contributions to cultural history.
Moreover, the Supreme Court has established that works with serious artistic value cannot be deemed obscene. Sally Mann’s art clearly meets this standard. Labeling it otherwise ignores legal protections for artistic expression. The silence of Fort Worth’s leadership, including City Council and Mayor Mattie Parker, paired with their repeated decisions to place religious freedom above all other constitutional freedoms, is alarming. The role of government is to uphold the Constitution, including artistic freedom. Not to act as an arbiter of taste. Museums are curated spaces, often with clear guidance about content, as is the case in this particular exhibit. Parents already have the power to decide what is appropriate for their children. If protecting children is the goal, let’s empower families rather than censor art for everyone.
Our community is not a monolith. The beauty of Fort Worth lies in its diversity. To cater only to one perspective undermines our values. Art is meant to challenge, provoke, and inspire, not merely reflect what we already know and agree upon.
Fort Worth’s reputation as a cultural hub is at stake. Our thriving art community brings in millions of dollars to our city, driving economic growth and enriching our lives. Actions like this risk alienating artists and audiences, undermining both our economy and our identity as a city that values creativity. If we only support art that offends no one, we risk losing art that truly inspires.
Notably, this is not the first time a small contingent has pressured one of our local museums to remove artwork. Continuing
to allow censorship and acquiesce to bullies threatens our valuable investment.
This is not just about Sally Mann’s work. We can ensure Fort Worth remains a beacon of freedom and artistic expression. I urge the community to reject censorship and defend the integrity of our cultural institutions. More importantly, City Council
should demand that Tim O’Hare refocus his attention on more pressing matters, like the 70 county jail deaths since 2017, affordable housing, and his obligation to the taxpayers of Tarrant County.

Lake Simons remembers her mother in a lot of ways — “wonderful,” “unique,” a “devoted wife and mother” — but also as a “soulfully loving human being.”
Lake and the entire Fort Worth theatre community are mourning her mother’s passing last week. Co-founder of Hip Pocket Theatre, Mary Diane Simons was 80 years old. The family said she died peacefully after a long battle with dementia. She is survived by husband Johnny Simons, daughters Lake and Lorca, and grandchildren River Barley and Cy Dyer.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Simons moved to Dallas at a young age. She met Johnny at graduate theatre school at TCU. After working at Casa Mañana and the Alley Theatre in Houston in the 1970s, the Simonses partnered with friend Douglas Balentine and launched Hip Pocket in 1976.
Simons served as producer and costume designer until she retired several years ago to focus on her health.
Her family describes her as a phenomenal artist who created beautiful costumes out of assorted media, including scraps and other unusual materials. As a costume designer,
Simons was the first living artist to have her work exhibited at the Kimbell Art Museum.
In 1988, Simons taught at Duke University, and Lake describes her mother as the perfect guide for young creatives.
“In her college years as a teacher,” Lake said, “she showed young people what it’s like to be a happy, vibrant, sharing, and loving human. I think in the fields of the arts, there are a lot of young people who have a hard time gaining that support from family and friends. Those are important years for young people, and there is something magical in showing art and creativity to them. I hear from so many people the word ‘mentor’ describing her.”

College football has forever changed, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

In any other year, we’d be discussing the merits of the newly crowned national champion and the game that delivered them there. Thanks to the expansion of the College Football Playoff, many of us spent Thursday through Monday watching meaningful and competitive — college and professional playoff games. Last week, I asserted that if both now-semipro games yielded a mean win differential of 15 points or fewer, that would be greatness. Thursday’s and Friday’s spats averaged an 8.5-point difference, one of the best in the history of the playoff, and it was actually closer than the numbers suggest.
I’ll give myself a casual pat on the back for picking both winners correctly in last week’s rundown, but the games themselves developed differently than expected.
It’s unclear whether Notre Dame was overvalued or Penn State under, or both, but it was like watching the same team play each other. Neither the Fighting Irish nor the Nittany Lions were able to produce much offense. Other than impressive line play and what we’ve come to know as classic smashmouth football, there wasn’t a game-changing pass catcher to be found. State clawed themselves to a 10-0 lead before the Irish
were able to notch a 3 before halftime, forcing the green and gold to play catchup, and they did, scoring their first touchdown to open the second half.
Notre Dame and PSU played tit for tat moving forward, neither team able to retain a lead, knotting at 17 and 24, never letting an advantage linger long enough to extend it. The Lions were in position to either drive for a last-second kick or bleed the clock for overtime when an unthinkable interception in their own territory with 33 seconds remaining handed the Irish a new lease on life, their season, and true relevance. Despite their enviable status as a wealthy and conference-less independent who has earned $20 million alone this playoff season, the Irish as an actual contender hasn’t been a reality for some time. The green and gold return to the title game for the first time since the BCS’ penultimate season, when they were chased off the field by Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide 42-14. That had been their most recent appearance to play for it all since the school’s last title in 1988, when Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz completed a perfect season by beating the third-ranked and previously undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers.
After such a close Thursday game, I had minimal expectations for the Cotton Bowl, but Texas didn’t upset their formula of fighting for nail biters. Ohio State, as they did against Oregon, struck early and put the Longhorns on their spurs from the get. When it seemed UT had finally McConaughey’d themselves into an alright, alright situation before half, the Buckeyes responded with a one-play 75-yard screen pass for an easy touchdown. After the break, the game progressed in a grind, similar to how the previous day’s Orange Bowl had. Texas could never gain a lead but were never more than a possession behind and constantly threatening. Longhorn QB Quinn Ewers — despite being a lightning rod for criticism — played with grit and precision, even channeling a Baker Mayfield-ish vibe at times, running with mojo and risking his own safety on critical downs.
The Longhorns fought to the Ohio State 8 yard-line with just over two minutes remaining, trailing by a touchdown, when disaster struck. On fourth and goal, Ewers was strip-sacked by his former Buckeye roommate, who scooped and scored the ball for a 92-yard touchdown, producing the second Longhorn semifinal loss in as many

This weekend marks a huge victory for the College Football Playoff, expansion, and the semifinals. After a first decade in which three playoff games per year might produce one close contest, we’ve now enjoyed three consecutive years in which the final four was almost as good as the previous year’s. TCU’s 6-point victory over Michigan combined with Georgia’s 1-point win against Ohio State is a leading contender, and the Wolverines’ overtime advancement past Alabama plus Texas’ season ending in their opponent’s red zone against the Huskies last season also makes a case for the mantle spot. I’d seed this season a solid third and would watch it again when I’m jonesing in the dead of summer.
It’s hard to surmise how to feel about the expanded playoffs right now. The firstround games were a wash, the second round were all “upsets,” and now we have the 7th and 8th seeds facing off for everything. While it feels somewhat surprising to be previewing these teams in the national title game, considering neither won a conference, it really shouldn’t. This new and longer
So, this brings us to the elephant in the room (not Alabama, who are on a losing streak), but the proverbial one. Amateur college football is/was/has been finished, and the league is truly now just a teenage pre-salary-cap NFL. For example: Ewers is reportedly being offered as much as $6 million to transfer and play another season somewhere else — Niners QB Brock Purdy didn’t even make $1 million in salary this season. But the allure of college football used to be the unabashed chaos and subjectivity. Every game really mattered, and it doesn’t anymore. David had the chance to be perfect and slay Goliath, or, if nothing else, David could bestow a nasty cut that would eventually infect Goliath and kill them months later. Granted, it’s not that there weren’t shenanigans with paying players before, but the clandestine cash-in-a-McDonald’s-bag nature of it was part of the charm.
Without expansion, it’s difficult to predict who we’d be watching this weekend, but it surely wouldn’t be Ohio State. More teams included is less comment-section drama. If your team couldn’t make a field of 12, they probably weren’t really contenders, because only about six of these teams actually were. We’re also treated to the second consecutive SEC-less title game, and for probably the first time in the history of college football, the competing teams have a combined three losses, which is just weird.
Don’t be confused. I’m not claiming to know how to fix college football, that players shouldn’t be paid, or that fewer games are favorable. But as the sport has become even more of an arms race, it’s starting to feel cheap, as gaudy expensive things often do. The product on the field is not worse if anything, this year has proven that the ability to pay these players a salary has leveled the field away from nauseating SEC domination. But it doesn’t feel as innocent as it used to, and in the words of Andy from The Office: “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good ol’ days before you’ve actually left them.” l

The Place for Hardcore Out
on East Lancaster, there’s a new BYOB spot tapping into the region’s strong punk community.

At Tulips FTW on Friday night, local shoegazers Trauma Ray, having recently returned from a fall tour of the U.K. and the U.S., headlined a bill that also included Denton “emoviolence” band Bullets Between Tongues and local hardcore heavies Ozone, Feral Cry, and Skimp, with DJ Solar Lodge spinning techno in between bands. Tulips, which holds over 500 people, was almost at capacity, some of whom were diving off the stage into the crowd. I’d say that a lot of the people in the room were in their 20s and 30s, but the show was all-ages, and at one point, this guy behind me, the dismay in his tone as thick as boldface type, said, “Huh. It’s like high school all over again. Like the Warped Tour.”
Turning around, I saw that he looked to be the age in which his high school experience happened somewhere in the earlyto-mid-2000s, the era when post-hardcore bands like Fall of Troy, A Day to Remember, and other bands with names based around prepositional phrases ruled the arena parking lots of major U.S. cities every summer. Well, no shit, dude, I thought. Who did he think listens to music like this?
For me, an old person, seeing a bunch of people too young to buy booze pack into a pretty big venue for some mostly local bands was exciting. I was watching a scene — area hardcore fans — in action. The music was loud. The crowd yelled along with the singers. The pit looked dangerous but, you know, respectful, with everyone adhering to unspoken pit etiquette. Beyond the edge of the maelstrom, one guy talked shit to another guy and the other guy barked like a dog in reply. When Trauma Ray came on, they played their Chameleon album start to finish. All in all, I had a very nice time!
While I was there, I ran into Daniel “DJ” Alvarez and Osiel “OC” Martinez, co-founders of hardcore/metal show promotion company NoiseROT, and DJ told me to check out a new spot holding DIY events.
“They’re doing their first hardcore show on Sunday afternoon,” he said. “It’s called The Place.”
It turns out that The Place is at 6463 E. Lancaster Ave., the former home of the dearly departed Ozzie Rabbit Lounge, a long-running dive bar that shuttered for good in May 2024. When Ozzie Rabbit closed, Matt Van Cura, a lifelong punk rocker, musician, tattooer, and owner of nextdoor-neighbor Randy Adams Tattoo, saw an opportunity for the now-vacant space.
Before Ozzie’s, the spot was a bar called the Power Plant, and before that, it was the now-legendary Tattoo Bar, a wild-ass haven for heavy bands and the drinkers who loved them. But opening a bar there didn’t hold a ton of appeal for Van Cura.
“I’d like to bring culture to this neighborhood,” he said. “I want to see music and art and punk markets, like the cool shit I saw when I was growing up. So, me and [Adams] were talking about that. He was like, ‘You should do the Tattoo Bar again,’ but I didn’t want to have to operate a bar during the day. I just wanna book bands.”
Rather than endure the endless parade of hassles and expenses that come with operating a bar, Van Cura decided instead to use it as a BYOB event space. Enter: The Place.
Van Cura held his first party on November 23, a dance night showcasing ’80s New Wave, punk, goth, and electronic music spun by DJ Fat Pee Pee (a.k.a. Elm Street Tattoo artist Lindsey Carmichael) that drew a big crowd.
The Place’s next event featured local hardcore band Antirad and cowpunks Convoy & The Cattlemen. For the show this past Sunday, Van Cura partnered with a dude named Fauz, who books hardcore shows all over North Texas under the nom de guerre Core 4 Core, and Noah Hammer, a tattoo apprentice at Randy Adams who helps run shows. Fauz and Hammer put together an 18+ hardcore bill with Grimoire, Limit of Destruction, Flü, Spit My Rage, and Finesse. The bands crammed into the
area between the bar and the front door, and everyone who came to see them fit wherever else they could. Though only a fraction of the 500+ people at Tulips Friday night, the energy was just as palpable and the pit just as gnarly, with a lot of the hands whipping around Sharpied with the X’s. Local scene documenter Gray Muncy (@birddog14) snapped some shots of the bands and the fans. Perusing them on Instagram the next day, I marveled that such an explosive crowd fit into the front part of a small bar. Between the sets of Grimoire and Limit of Destruction, I went out to the patio with Van Cura, who introduced me to Fauz and Hammer (who’d been taking the show’s $10 cover at the side entrance). From what I gathered, Ozone guitarist Ty Yarborough had sort of passed the show-booking torch to Fauz (who had helped Yarborough put on shows over the years), in part because of Fauz’s devotion to fostering an actual community around the local hardcore scene.
“It’s like everybody that comes to shows is like, ‘Yo, let me help out,’ ” Fauz said. “As corny as it sounds, this is a community. We all gotta be there for each other. This isn’t, like, a me thing. It’s an everybody thing.”
Hammer moved to work the door again, and a few more kids with X’s on their hands filed in through The Place’s backdoor, the menacing crunch of distorted, high-gain guitar spilling out as they entered. The Place’s next event is an all-ages Punk Rock Flea Market on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring DJ D-Beat Dan spinning hardcore and other heavy shit, with vendors selling food, art, and what I assume will be a large variety of black band T-shirts. If some under-21s hanging out listening to the music they love sounds too much like the Warped Tour, I don’t know what to tell you, but everybody else will be having a blast. l

The Post is back, this time in the old Lola’s Saloon space near West 7th.

As anyone who remembers the old Lola’s knows, the place was essentially two places: a bar-bar (Lola’s Saloon) and a backyard with a nice stage (Lola’s Trailer Park). Since the pandemic shut down Lola’s a couple of years ago after 16 years in business total, Birdie’s Social Club has been running the whole spot, but now Birdie’s will be turning over the bar-bar/Saloon part to Brooks Kendall. President of the booking agency Afallon Productions, Kendall is excited to be back up and running as The Post again after shuttering the venue on Race Street a couple of years ago due to pandemic-related issues.
“We’ve looked at many possibilities,” he said, “and this one is the one that works best for our needs. The legacy of Lola’s in this space means a lot to us, and we’re looking forward to becoming a part of that history.”
The first show at the new Post is on Thu, Feb 6, with Fort Worth country stylist Cory Cross and rock singer-songwriter Ryker Hall. Like the old Post, the new one will focus mainly on singer-songwriters from various genres in an intimate setting. Along with a full bar and front patio, The Post will piggyback on Birdie’s food program.
“The room is ready to go,” Kendall said. “The team is making the changes needed to make it The Post, but there will be no big renovations made.”
Birdie’s recently announced its excitement about The Post as it takes over the Lola’s Saloon space that Birdies had
labeled as Bourbon and Shine Rodney Parker will be The Post’s sound technician.
“The response to the announcement has been really great,” Kendall said. “Feels good to see how many people are glad we’re coming back.”
The scene took a huge hit from the pandemic, with the closures of several live, mostly original venues, especially Lola’s and The Post.

A long time ago (the ’90s) in a galaxy far, far away (Dallas), you could find me at Cowboys — the original on Gaston Avenue, not the corporate monstrosity with “Red River” in the name — almost every Thursday evening. It was nickel beer night. At least until the TABC decided that was a bad idea. Above the clanking of empty beer bottles breaking as they hit the trash cans by the hundreds, you could hear the sweet, sweet sounds of the country dance tunes of the time. After taking dance lessons there for several Sundays in a row, soon I was ready to twostep on any given Thursday when the DJ played the perfect boot-scootin’ song, “Neon Moon” by Brooks & Dunn.
I’m way more selective with my country music now. You can find me at an alt-country show, like The Vandoliers opening for The Toadies last month, or jamming the Bottle Rockets on my Apple Carplay. But I haven’t done any line dancing, couples push, two-stepping, or three-stepping since Shania first hollered, “Let’s go, girls!”
My husband would prefer it that way, but he’s in for a rude awakening because I think my dancing days may be here again. It’s a great workout sans beer. I’m sober now, too, so I would definitely burn some calories out on the dance floor. A refresher course is in order. But where?

Another excellent spot for country dancing is the Stagecoach Ballroom (2516 E Belknap St, Fort Worth, 817-831-2261). This honkytonk is often overlooked by the tourists who flood the Stockyards, but it’s as authentic as they come and one of the oldest dance halls in the state. Family-owned and -operated, the place is spacious with plenty of tables and chairs. Plus, the dance floor is large, the wooden bar is long, fights are few, cover charges are reasonable, and the help is generally friendly.
The Stagecoach has its dance classes on Sundays. Doors open at 1:30pm, with intermediate classes 2pm-2:45pm, beginner lessons 2:45-3:30pm, and then the house band, The Coachman, taking the stage at 4pm. In case you need a little liquid courage, there are happy-hour prices from 1:30pm to 5pm. There is no cost to attend.

Along with playing here in the Stockyards, where the dance scene is strong, Cory Cross and his band, The Burden, enjoy playing dance halls like White Horse and Sagebrush, both in Austin. Cross’ sets and songwriting have evolved to encourage audience participation and dancing. He tailors his setlists to include songs suitable for boot scooting. He focuses on tempos and themes that resonate with the crowd, including originals written with dancing in mind. This has not always been the case.
“When I first started playing with the full band,” he said, “we were doing more listening rooms like Magnolia Motor Lounge, The Post, and Tulips FTW, where people go out just to listen and drink.”
It was definitely still country music, but it expanded to include what he calls morality-type songs. Once the band was booking more dance-hall gigs, his writing style changed. “I not only started writing more songs along those lines, but we started to tailor our sets to include all of the songs that we would dance to, and we knew it would get people dancing.”
He said that tempo and rhythm are the two main factors but that lyrically, people simply love to dance to drinking songs.
Like me, Cross has great club memories from his 20s. Unlike me, he was actually the one onstage, not as a country crooner but as a rock ’n’ roller. He feels like the current dance scene is as collaborative between
“We absolutely love it!” he said. “There was moshing. You know, we were singing along, and the energy passed back and forth. It wasn’t so much a performance as it was a collaborative thing between the audience and the band.”
That’s how he feels about the country dance scene, the audiences, and his fellow artists. “We all used to play in rock ’n’ roll bands back in the day, and [onstage] we always say, ‘We want to see everybody out in the pit!’ That was a big thing, you know, and now the ‘pit’ is the dance floor.”
Many dance hall venues hold dance lessons ahead of shows, which is important as it helps to create a welcoming atmosphere for those who may feel intimidated by the mere thought of moving their feet rhythmically. Cross gets it. “If you don’t know how to dance, it can be sort of intimidating, but you know, two-stepping is just that: two steps. You know, there’s the flourishes and everything, but it’s still pretty easy.”
He thinks lessons right before their sets is a very cool deal. “It does get people to stick around and dance.”
He also loves the instant gratification of playing to a dance crowd. “It’s a great encouragement when people are dancing, because there’s no second-guessing.”
They like the music if they are up dancing.
On Thursday, you have a chance to meet Cross and test out all of the above for yourselves. Try something new and come out early for the Thursday dance lessons where the Fort Worth Wranglers (@FortWorthWranglers, FWWranglers@ gmail.com) teach three variations of the two-step, plus a move and a dip at 7pm, then at 8pm, when the band hits the stage, you can go “beyond the basics,” they say, and learn to waltz, polka, cowboy cha-cha, and more. When eating out, the healthiest dishes to order typically include grilled or baked lean proteins like chicken or fish, steamed or roasted vegetables, broth-based soups, salads with vinaigrette dressing, whole grains like brown rice or quinoa, and fresh fruit for dessert. Avoid fried foods, heavy cream sauces, and large portions of refined carbohydrates like white rice or pasta. With that in mind, here are some dishes to try at eight of the area’s best spots.
Start your day off right with a nutritious breakfast at Ol’ South Pancake House in Fort Worth (1509 S University Dr, 817-336-0311) or Burleson (225 E Renfro St, 817-989-9090). Two items on the omelet menu have my attention. The Trifit Trainer ($11.99) is made with grilled chicken breast and egg whites topped with avocado, spinach, and turkey bacon, and the Veggie Delight ($10.99) features regular eggs (though you can substitute egg whites for a few cents more), mushrooms, grilled onions, spinach, and diced tomatoes. Or if your idea of “fitness” is “fittin’ these pancakes in my mouth,” then you should enter Ol’ South’s pancake-eating contest. For details, visit OlSouthPancakeHouse.com/ Mega-Pancake-Challenge.
For salads, you won’t find one better than the Shack Salad ($14.49) at the Cook Shack (500 University Dr, Fort Worth, 817367-9151). When this fried chicken eatery first brought the heat to town, our critic described each salad as a “chunky lunch that would not leave you hungry an hour later.” A generous amount of sliced grilled chicken is served on a bed of mixed greens with almonds, avocado, dates, corn, goat cheese,
cherry tomatoes, corn, and a Champagne vinaigrette dressing. It’s also worth noting that the Cook Shack chills the salad chicken, because there’s nothing worse than hot chicken on a cold salad.
With locations in Fort Worth (925 Foch St, 817-885-7775) and Keller (251 Town Center Ln, 817-741-3665), Juice Junkies specializes in organic cold-pressed juices, superfood smoothies, and vegan bites. For a really fresh start to the year, try a Juice Junkies cleanse. To ease your way into a new nutritional routine, stop by for some fresh juice or an acai bowl filled with acai berries, blueberries, bananas, and almond milk, then topped with your choice of granola, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, or coconut flakes. If nothing else, stop in and grab some juice. You know you want to!
Not unlike Juice Junkies, Righteous Foods (3405 W 7th St, Fort Worth, 817-8509996) is a place where almost everything is healthy or a healthier choice than the usual. Beyond basic nutritional value, this eatery in the Cultural District is focused on clean food using responsibly sourced ingredients. You can eat here for brunch, lunch, or dinner, and they even have options for those with dietary restrictions. The brunch bowls and lunch greens all sound delicious, but Righteous also got my number with the burger on the lunch “grinder” list.
The Hemp Seed, Mushroom & Black Bean Burger comes with avocados, smoked gouda cheese, romesco sauce, house pickles, tomato, and piquillo, plus a side of yuca fries.
My absolute favorite dish at Tuk Tuk Thai (3431 W 7th St, Fort Worth, 817-3323339) is the Drunken Noodle ($13.75), with my choice of chicken, plus flat rice noodles, bell pepper, tomato, carrot, broccoli, onion, and basil leaves at a medium spice level. Unfortunately, it’s a “sometimes” treat for me as it shoots my blood sugar levels through the roof. Not good, being diabetic and all. It’s a heavy dish for lunch, anyway, so my new go-to is the chicken lettuce wrap ($10.50) from the appetizer menu with mushrooms, green onions, brown sauce, and crispy noodles, with lettuce on the side. It’s guilt-free and quite tasty.
For this column, I also reached out to Jennifer Hurley, the creative force behind Arlington Foodies, a community group on Facebook with more than 23K members. I posed the question: When you think about the idea of eating something healthy for a change at your favorite local restaurants, what dishes/places come to mind? The next three ideas are hers.

Seeing as how my husband and I had our wedding at Amore Mio Trattoria (101 E Abram St, Ste 190, Arlington, 817-5385553), I was already a big fan, so I’m glad to hear about a healthy option to consider. The salmon piccata ($25) on the dinner menu features linguine with white wine sauce, fresh mushrooms, Roma tomatoes, and capers, topped with wild salmon and a touch of lemon. For another nutritious touch, all pasta can be substituted with zucchini noodles for $4 more.
The Veggie Lover’s pizza at Bek’s (965 W Lamar Blvd, Arlington, 817-303-0000) comes with bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, sauteed spinach, and fresh tomatoes in a 14-inch size for $17.95 and an 18-inch size for $19.95. Green olives, jalapenos, pineapple, and sundried tomatoes, as well as fresh basil and garlic, can also be added for $1.50 or $1.95 per ingredient, respectively. Bek’s also sells pizza by the slice, so you can test drive this for a mere $3.95.
Until she brought it up, I had forgotten that Division Brewing (513 E Abram St, Arlington, 682-259-7011) is now Division Brewing Pizza Kitchen, having celebrated its first anniversary under the new name in November. All their pizzas are made with house-made dough that’s cold fermented for four days, plus house-made sauces and fresh cheeses, everything served tavern-style (square cut) unless you indicate pie-style (wedge). The Veggie ($18) is made with red sauce, bell peppers, black olives, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, and onions. Other veggie ingredients on hand include basil, fresh garlic, olive oil, and pistachios (!), which appear on The Rob ($18), along with cream sauce, beef, onions, fresh mozzarella, and burger seasoning. (The Rob doesn’t sound particularly healthy, but trying new things should be a resolution, too, right?)
Hurley is also a musician who sometimes shares the stage with the local folk-rock group KatsüK as Savage Hurley. A true Arlingtonian, she can regularly be found at the every-Monday acoustic open-mic nights at Binions Ice House (205 N West St, 817617-2088). Watching a documentary film with the mantra of “Don’t wait for tomorrow” feels apropos as we embark on a new year. Bastards of Soul documents the Texas band of the same name and its journey marked by the unforeseen loss of their charismatic frontman, Chadwick Murray, who died from a mysterious illness in 2021. The filmmakers say they sought to “capture the raw essence of [the band’s] final album sessions and the electrifying stage presence that defined them, celebrating the enduring legacy of a man who achieved his dreams against all odds.” The film screens at 7:50pm at the Campus Theatre (214 W Hickory St, Denton, 940) 382-7014) as part of the Denton Black Film Festival happening all weekend.
