n 2017, a fire destroyed the beloved Rainbow Lounge and, with it, the main LGBTQ+ gathering space in Fort Worth. The scene hasn’t been the same ever since, and many people outsource to Dallas when they want to have a good time.

But new ownership at The Urban Cowboy Saloon and the dedication of the staff at mainstays Club Changes and Club Reflection might see that start to change.

After Trinity Pride Fest this past Saturday, I set out to explore Fort Worth’s gay bar scene.

First up was Club Reflection on South Jennings Street on the Near Southside. The space felt familiar from the moment I walked in. Antique saddles rested above the door.

Men make up most of the clientele, though others are welcome and filter in and out, he said. Changes relies on a steady stream of regulars like Stephen “K” Becker, who held court at the bar, sipping on a vodka-soda with lime. “Oh, my God, honey. I’ve been coming here since it opened.”

Fort Worth’s gay bar scene has little in common with the scene in California, where he moved from 23 years ago, but Becker said he likes the small, close-knit community here.

For the last stop, I headed across the street to The Urban Cowboy Saloon, a long, low building that rises over East Lancaster and I-30 West like a mirage on the horizon.

On the night I visited, the place was packed.

Revelers of all ages and genders shook it out to pop hits, cheered on by a set of scantily clad men on a small stage over the dance floor.

Co-owner and local drag icon Sapphire Keaton dashed in and out from the back, a vision in a chartreuse floor-length gown.

Austin Jennings-Ralph officially passed ownership over to Keaton and her boyfriend Patrick Kubin this June. Keaton has bartended at the club for a couple years and stepped up as general manager last August.

“I’ve bartended for so long,” Keaton said. “Drag is not a forever career for any-

one. That can wear your body out. I wanted to do something I was passionate about, and I love being around people.”

As manager, Keaton started bringing in more drag shows and scheduling more entertainment (like the aforementioned dancers) to draw in crowds. Kubin is responsible for updating much of the construction in the bar.

“I wanted to bring that Rainbow Lounge vibe back to Fort Worth, which we were missing,” Keaton said.

She said as she grows The Urban Cowboy, she wants to build a truly inclusive space.

“I’m a transwoman,” she said. “I know there’s a lot of trans and nonbinary people that don’t feel they fit into that male gay persona. I want to make a space for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay, bi, trans, whatever. I just want everyone to feel comfortable.”

In the future, Keaton said people can expect more events and shows at The Urban Cowboy Saloon. She keeps in touch with the owners of the other two local gay bars, and by working together and collaborating, she said, they all can keep more of the queer scene in Fort Worth.

“We’re still a community,” she said.

“You don’t have to drive to Dallas for everything anymore.” l continued on page 6

I had just walked into a hole-in-the-wall country bar. Married owners Kevin Barnett and John Garska designed it this way when they opened 11 years ago.

“We just wanted to create a safe space where all are welcome,” Barnett said, taking a break to talk to me in the backroom as two drag queens prepped for their show at 11 p.m. “Even though we’re, first and foremost, a gay bar, we have a varied clientele.”

Barnett and Garska outfitted the space with antiques to give it that homey Western feel. For Andres Valenzuela, that warmth keeps him coming back. The schoolteacher has frequented the bar for 10 of the 11 years it has been open.

“It’s more like a friendly atmosphere,” he said. “You feel like you’re at home. To be honest, not many bars in Fort Worth feel like that.”

Though Club Reflection keeps things laid back, they put on multiple drag shows throughout the week, including drag bingo every other Monday.

Next, I went to Club Changes on East Lancaster Avenue. Changes has a similar feeling, all dim lights and loud music with a couple pool tables at the back. Manager Ridge DuRocher echoed Barnett’s sentiments.

“We’re laid back, no trouble, like a little Cheers,” he said with a molasses-thick ac-

Some people really are willing to take a chance and push women to their limits.

And six of those people are on the Supreme Court of the United States.

Overturning Roe v. Wade is most likely the start of a new age for SCOTUS, an era of party politicking. Justice Clarence Thomas has since said he now wants to “revisit” other previous civil liberties rulings, a phrase so ominous it sounds like it should come from Emperor Palpatine (you know, the wrinkly male autocrat in black robes … wait).

His implication is that he wants the court to explore potentially revoking other constitutional rights — something that, until now, had never happened. This ruling has set that frightening precedent.

Evangelicals and other far-rightists claim this is preserving life, but that’s not true. In reality, this is a death sentence.

While they insist this is advocacy, it’s just politics — that’s why justices Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh mislead Congress and the public by saying in their recent confirmation hearings that Roe v. Wade was “settled law” and didn’t need changing. If the three would have told the truth — that their whole reason for being was to overturn Roe, to start with — they never would have been confirmed, relying as they were on “moderate” congressional votes. Now, thanks to Coney Barrett, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh, and the entirely gullible U.S. Congress for confirming them, many women will die.

This was the plan all along. And now Thomas says he’s interested in “revisiting” other rulings. If protecting women’s reproductive health services didn’t matter to you, consider the implications of this conservative SCOTUS “revisiting” Griswold v. Connecticut (already on Thomas’ hit list), the case that permits married couples to buy and use contraceptives.

Feel the hatred within you — and direct it at the ballot box.

Who would be most impacted if SCOTUS overturned Griswold v. Connecticut?

Women, minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Who is most impacted by overturning Roe v. Wade? Women, minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community.

The vast majority of Americans support Roe v. Wade to some degree, based on research from numerous studies. Most Republicans support some exceptions to abortion bans, such as in cases of rape, incest, and risks to the mother’s life, but extreme evangelicals don’t care about this. They don’t care about democracy. They believe they are above such mortal constraints as earthly justice and law. They believe they wield God’s sword in some unholy war against their fellow men (well, in this case, women).

Republicans who support protections for rape victims and pregnant people at risk of death must make their voices heard. They must demand such protections at the national and state levels, because overturning Roe got rid of any insurance we had in those circumstances. This is not the time for appeasement.

This is not the time for party cohesion at the public’s expense. Women will die as a result of trigger laws across the country (including Texas). Desperate women seeking abortions will obtain them however they can, even if it means risking their lives, and anyone who claims to support life should prove it by caring about women’s lives as well as those of fetuses.

Even though politicians claim to care about protecting life, they don’t care about ours.

Women’s bodies now have less autonomy under law than dead bodies. Individuals must consent for their organs to be extracted for medical or scientific use after death, but the same people who claimed “my body, my choice” for comparatively unimportant shit (like whether they could be denied service in stores for not wearing masks) get to pick what medical procedures pregnant people can have?

Side note: The term “pregnant people” is important, for not only women can become pregnant. Hormone replacement therapy and gender-affirming care are expensive and hard for many Texans to access, making abortion a necessary resource for trans men as well.

If you consider yourself a reasonable person regarding abortion, prove it. Talk to your senators and representatives. Tell them you’re a Republican and you’re outraged.

Tell them you care about women as much as fetuses.

Be better than the politicians you claim not to idolize. Be the change you say you want to see in politics.

While evangelicals claim overturning Roe will save lives, the truth is that it’s going to punish women.

I recently had a fender-bender smackdab in the middle of Camp Bowie Boulevard, a minor collision that left the tail ends of both vehicles hanging out into the left lanes of the east- and westbound traffic.

No one slowed down, so I got out of my truck to wave off the traffic on the other vehicle’s side, and the other driver, a Latina, pulled onto the road I’d come from. I returned to my truck and parked behind her.

Unbeknownst to me, a Fort Worth police patrol car had arrived at the Sonic on that side road. The officer was responding to a call there, but he didn’t see our collision. He simply came over to make sure we were OK. The Latina and I were both fine, and so was her toddler, who had been properly strapped into a car-seat in her back seat. The officer had to finish addressing the incident at Sonic, but he took our license and insurance info.

The Latina and the child got back into her car, and she made a phone call.

When the conversation ended, I walked up to her window. We exchanged phone numbers, and she seemed anxious. The car and the insurance were in her father’s name. I asked her if everything was OK. She smiled and nodded, but I could tell she was concerned.

At that point, I became anxious.

What if she had a warrant? What if she was an immigrant and didn’t have her papers?

The officer hadn’t seen the collision and couldn’t assess blame. The insurance companies would battle it out.

If the officer hadn’t been responding to another call, he wouldn’t have engaged us or asked for our licenses or insurance at all. I was suddenly concerned.

I walked over to the Sonic and asked the officer if he had a prybar I could use to try to bend my fender back out. He didn’t, but he said he’d be with us in a minute. As I walked back to our parked vehicles, I realized why I was concerned. The last thing I wanted to see was a young woman separated from her child for a fender-bender. If the officer returned and the Latina had a warrant or an expired green card, our mishap might result in her arrest. I didn’t exactly have flashbacks of brown chil-

dren locked in cages at the Texas/Mexico border, but I knew with absolute certainty I couldn’t trust the laws of my state or my fellow Texans’ attitudes toward immigrants. And I knew I’d rather err on the side of human decency than Texas injustice.

I asked the Latina if she cared whether or not we included the officer in any kind of report. She said she’d rather not, unsuccessfully attempting to conceal her anxiety. I revisited the officer at the Sonic and told him that the Latina and I had exchanged info and that we didn’t require his assistance. He said her driver’s license was expired.

“You look like you got your hands full here,” I said, nodding at the Sonic. “We’re OK.” “You sure?” he asked.

“Positive,” I replied, and he returned my license and walked over and spoke with the Latina briefly.

After the police officer departed, the Latina texted me to make sure I was OK. I assured her I was.

I reported the accident, and my insurance company told me to take my truck to a collision repair center actually owned by a sitting Republican U.S. Congressman. Sheesh, I thought, a politician who profited politically off brown children being locked up in cages would now profit from my accident. It didn’t thrill me, but I needed my truck repaired.

A week after I dropped it off, I received a call from one of the collision center’s supervisors telling me that the truck was torn down but the replacement parts were another three weeks out.

“Ever since Biden got elected,” he said, “we’re having all kinds of problems.”

At that point, I’d had enough. “If you think the election of President Biden is what’s causing supply shortages, then you haven’t got two brain cells left to rub together. The supply issues started during COVID under the previous administration.”

Silence.

I knew he’d misread my unmistakable Southern drawl and presumed too much. And I realized I’d just irresponsibly mouthed off to the guy in charge of fixing my truck.

“But this isn’t about politics,” I told him. “I understand.”

We finished the conversation cordially, but I was frustrated.

What happened to Texas, and what’s wrong with Texans? Is there any escape from conservative small-mindedness now? Doesn’t it permeate every aspect of our culture and manifest itself as bigotry, chauvinism, greed, ignorance, and xenophobia at every turn?

I suddenly recalled President George W. Bush’s remarks a couple of weeks after the Twin Towers fell in New York City in 2001. “They hate us for our freedoms,” he said.

It was laughable then, of course. They “hated” us because we routinely and covertly undermine their governments and overtly try to bomb them back to the Middle Ages for Big Oil. Bush’s comment was ludicrous then, but it’s spot on now — about us.

We really do seem to “hate us for our freedoms.” We hate fair elections, voting rights, health care, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and education in general. We hate Muslims, LGBTQ+, Mexicans, Mexican Americans, Asians, immigrants, librarians, and Black people — unless they play football, basketball, or run track (and only then if they don’t kneel during the national anthem for a nation we hardly consider ourselves a part of). We care more about fossil fuels than fresh water, and we fight more for the rights of disturbed white males who envision themselves as the Punisher than any innocent Texas girl’s sovereignty over her own body.

Everything’s not bigger in Texas.

We’re a small-minded state full of small-minded, ignorant people. We despise American freedoms and ideals so much that we’re hardly even worthy of them anymore. And the new redophile political platform in Texas capitalizes on this perversity, delegitimizing the results of the 2020 presidential election and reiterating the Lone Star state’s right to secede from the United States.

Which sounds great if we’re aspiring to a Lone Star civil war or an imbecilic lapse into a bloviating banana republic (with an emphasis on already having gone fricking bananas!).

It’s easy to pass by K-Town Hot Dogs. Located in a strip mall down the block from Hulen Mall, the eatery occupies a tiny amount of real estate, which is why there are no chairs inside, just a row of high tables with barstools so you can eat quickly and then leave.

The only Korean atmosphere here comes from a TV that plays videos of BTS’ live performances from years past. The place offers only horchata to wash down your food, too.

A traditional Korean hot dog with sugar coating and an all-beef hot dog with ramen coating are available at K-Town Hot Dogs.

All in all, K-Town would probably work better as a food stand inside a mall than it does as a proper restaurant. Mmm, but if you are interested in the phenomenon of Korean hot dogs — the meat on a stick that takes the

one. A stick of mozzarella or half-mozz/ half-sausage can be substituted for a regular hot dog, a jalapeño cheese dog, or a premium beef sausage on the inside. The whole thing comes on sturdy wooden skewers that I intend to reuse the next time I feel like making kabobs. If you want American-style dogs on a bun with toppings like relish or cheese, you’ll have to go somewhere else. This place has a dinky condiment table with ketchup, mustard, or sriracha to drizzle on your stick as it comes out of the fryer.

I ordered a regular dog with the K-Town original crust and a beef sausage with the ramen. As expected, the deep-fried ramen coating made a crunchy contrast with the meat. It was quite heavy, but I was hungry enough to finish the thing. I do wish the kitchen offered a puffed-rice crust, which is a common way to eat these things in South Korea and would give a similar crunch without being such a load. As for the regular dog, the cashier asked me if I wanted sugar sprin-

kled over it, and what could I do except say yes? The amount of sugar was a bit much, but I did like the sweet-and-savory flavors that the dog had going on. I would have preferred a bottle of honey on that condiment table, which isn’t the Korean way but would have let me control the sugar. At least I didn’t need dessert after my meal.

(I wrote the bulk of this review before hearing about Two Hands Hot Dogs, a stall in the food court of Hulen Mall that offers similar Korean dogs, so I ate there for the sake of completeness. That place offers sodas and more flavor options, which is a plus, but I had trouble making the staff understand my English, which is a minus. The hot dogs there were comparably priced but smaller, which may be a plus or a minus to you.)

I needed more beverages than K-Town Hot Dogs could provide, and while I could have gone to the bubble tea shop a couple doors down, I’ve never been much for bubble tea. I took the doggies home so I could hydrate properly, and they lost very little in terms of heat or texture during the car trip.

These hot dogs could make fantastic party food — imagine putting these out with your game-day spread when your friends are trotting out the same tired chicken wings and nachos. Whatever its shortcomings as a sit-down experience, K-Town Hot Dogs is a bit of our food scene that gives you what might just be your next craving. l

The interior looks like a homey kitchen and dining area. Varied seating options and overhead wicker chandeliers offer spacious and well-lit environs for a few dozen diners.

After placing my order, I snagged a small table near the entrance and awaited the first of several dishes that came out in quick succession.

The crushed avocado toast was dense and packed with flavor. The multigrain bread was thick and bursting with grainy goodness. Every bite ran the gamut of textures from soft hard-boiled egg to creamy avocado, then hearty bread. Accentuating the experience were pungent sprinkles of aged white cheddar that tasted a bit like parmesan and nutty bits of black sesame seeds.

Flower Child offers several creative salads that won’t leave you hungry. The Ginger Miso Crunch came with a hefty bed of Asian cabbage topped with spiraled carrots, red bell pepper slices, zucchini, and thick chunks of grilled tofu. The real treat was the mix of sesame seeds, cashews, mint, and ginger sauce that transformed the salad into an Asian delight.

Mother Earth is one of several bowls that come with the option of adding protein.

The picturesque entree was plated with care.

At the center was a mix of barley and quinoa surrounded by scoops of arugula, diced cucumber dressed in vinegar and sesame seeds, tender cuts of chicken breast that had minimal seasoning, a medley of salty caramelized onions and savory portobello mushrooms, mild pesto blended with pureed broccoli,

and thick cuts of sweet potato lathered with a spicy red miso sauce. I wasn’t sure what the proper way to dig into the plate was, but I enjoyed eating most of the heavenly veggies one at a time.

The steak plate was simple and savory.

Thin slices of juicy and salty beef came served over a bed of roasted broccoli that had a mild lemon and garlic flavor. Disappointingly, the side of asparagus was mostly soft but fibrous stalks, and I saw only one leafy spear.

The Thai Dye, one of four wraps, came in a hearty multigrain pita-type bread. Thai basil and cilantro were the first ingredients to hit my palate. The tofu was dense and layered in a spicy red paste, but the ensemble was a bit dry overall. The wrap also would have benefitted from more generous portions of avocado, radish, and snap peas. An accompanying olive oil vinaigrette livened everything up.

I didn’t plan on dessert, but the mention of chocolate pudding by one employee left me making room for one guilty pleasure on my otherwise healthy outing. The dense dessert was served with roasted coconut and crushed almonds, and every bite of creamy, chocolate goodness was delightful and not overly rich.

Flower Child offers something for everyone expecting lean meats and lots of veggies. The staff, who were nearly all college-aged, were attentive and polite. They seemed to be genuinely excited to be working there, and I left genuinely excited to stop back. l

Though the image of country music these days brings to mind big pickup trucks, bigger production, stadium concerts, and headset microphones, the origins of the deeply American musical tradition stem from acoustic guitars strummed on front porches or from the corner of low-lit barns-cumdance halls at best. Despite the bloated modern commercialism, the essence of the genre still remains this simple, intimate form of performance. With the help of a local studio and a local label, country singer-songwriter Cory Cross was able to capture just a little bit of that essence on his latest EP. Released this past Friday, Cross’ simply titled Cloudland Single Mic Session recreates some of the folksy intimacy of the classic country tradition by recording three songs

live at Cloudland Recording Studios with just one microphone picking up the entire three-piece performance. The sessions were also documented on video and can be streamed on YouTube. The effort was a collaboration among Cross; Cloudland’s resident engineer Joe Tacke (Mean Motor Scooter, Uncle Toasty); and DJ Dugan of Smith Music Group, the local label best known for releasing most of the live recordings to come out of Billy Bob’s Texas.

“It was kind of coincidental how it came together,” Cross explained about the coordination. “I was already chatting with Joe [Tacke] about doing some recording for a duet I had written to record with [country singer] Jenna Clark” at her recommendation. “Then, around the same time, DJ [Dugan] also suggested I reach out to Joe [Tacke] on one of these single-mic things, which, I guess, they’ve done a few of together. Me and [Tacke] clicked right off the bat.”

The great professional relationship that developed between Cross and Tacke further solidified when the two began working together on a full-band version of the duet Cross envisioned with Jenna Clark, due out in the fall. Though most often found tracking full bands, Tacke has some pretty extensive experience with the novel single-mic technique that seems so compatible with the stark acoustic country that Cross presented for the project.

“I had wanted to do something like this for a long time,” Tacke explained. “Several years ago, I heard a story on NPR about a John Mellencamp record he had done at Sun [Studio] in Memphis. They still had all the original spots marked on the floor from where Elvis’ band had set up, and [Mellencamp] decided to record with the same method using those spots to put his band around a single mic. I spent some time studying the technique and listening to some of those records before finally deciding to give it a try.”

Tacke utilized the method briefly for a project called Just One in coordination with Travis Wright of the I’m a Fan of … podcast.

The concept: one mic, one camera, one shot.

“I love the challenge of this method of recording,” Tacke elaborated. “None of the band wears headphones, and there’s only one mic, so balancing the mix consists of telling this player to turn down and that player to move closer, et cetera. I do all of these straight to tape, so there is the added challenge of using that medium. The end result is so rewarding. Most artists are surprised by the sound that can be achieved with just a single microphone.”

The three songs Cross chose for the project — a cover of the John Prine classic “Angel from Montgomery” and two originals, “Home” and “New Year’s Eve” — as well as Cross’ tall, slender, Hank Williams-esque presence, lend themselves effortlessly to this simple method. Cross’ dusky tenor is sparsely accompanied by his girlfriend Abigayle Ryan and the gentle weep of pedal steel played by Burton Lee. “Cory [Cross] was a perfect fit for this because of his voice,” Tacke said. “He has such a killer voice. There’s some young Randy Travis in there, I think, on top of his own uniqueness that makes him really fun to listen to. Plus, his songwriting is top notch. He immediately understood how to work with the mic and when and where to pull back.

Him and I got it off so well.”

Cross, no stranger to a recording studio, said he found the experience calming in contrast to the normal tracking process.

“The atmosphere, at least for me, was a lot more laid back” than a typical recording session, he said. “I’ve been in the studio where it’s been my project, my money, with a timeframe, and my own specific vision, with people and plans. That can be a bit of a stressful environment. But this all developed pretty on the spot. We never really talked about specifics — how many songs and whatnot. I knew it was going to be good. Joe [Tacke]’s really talented, and it was DJ [Dugan]’s idea, and he loves music — we all do — but I didn’t really know what to expect. I wasn’t even entirely sure it was going to be released as an EP. I didn’t really have much of a vision for it, but the end result, I’m very happy with.” l

Do you like Christian pop music? If not, I guess you’d better come around to it, because the U.S. Supreme Court’s rulings against both a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body (Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization) and the separation of church and state (Kennedy v. Bremerton School District) make me afraid of whatever the court’s next trick is, and at this moment, freedom of expression, certainly any form that fails to portray Jesus in anything other than an effusively positive light, seems to be as fair game as anything else.

Of course, such reactionary rulings are clearly not enough for this court’s conservative majority, seeing as it has already weakened the Voting Rights Act and has indicated that it will take aim at birth control and marital equality in the near future.

“The court has only just begun” is a popular chorus right now, and by the end of this week, the statutes of the Environmental Protection Agency may also be at the mercy of the states, and it is obvious that the right-wing justices are not going to stop until they have nullified, repurposed, and/ or reshaped every aspect of American life that does not already fall within the narrow, fearful parameters of white, evangelical Christian values. So, one more time, do you like Christian pop?

Or let me ask that this way: Does the possibility of the Supreme Court somehow circumscribing the contents of creative expression sound completely absurd and unlikely? Well, so did the possibility that they would overturn 50 years of reproductive rights, just like there was no way these justices would reverse the premise that government employees shall not elevate one kind of religious belief or practice over another. Gee, who could have expected this.

Not me, and not you, probably, because the Cancel Roe v. Wade Bogeyman never seemed real, not when Mitch McConnell used a bullshit pretext to refuse to hold a confirmation hearing for Barack Obama’s own Supreme Court nominee, and not

when Donald Trump ascended to the Oval Office, and not even when his three appointees swore up and down under oath that they would leave Roe v. Wade alone.

Again, does the capacity for this Supreme Court to destroy any aspect of our lives that exists beyond the comfort zone of white, right-wing, evangelical Christians sound too absurd? How long before we read a Neil Gorsuch opinion in which he quotes the lyrics from “God Gave Rock and Roll to You”? I bet he lifts them from the Petra version, because Petra is Christian pop.

How does that sound? Petra. In your earholes. For all eternity. Chew on that like a communion wafer.

God did not give rock ’n’ roll to us.

Black people did. And before that, they gave us R&B, gospel and soul, jazz, and the blues, the last of which being born of their own lived existence in the racist, oppressive South. All the foundations of modern American popular music come from Black people, and each sound has long since been appropriated and transmogrified into material that fits in better with white, Christian preferences. With this Supreme Court, is it too outlandish to think they might take this appropriation even further? Do you like Christian pop? Because the party that bans books and passes legislation popularly known as the “Don’t Say Gay Law” is not actually in favor of free speech, despite what it would have you believe by guaranteeing a public high school football coach the right to pressure people into praying with him to the god of his choice on the 50-yard line at a game. Welp, I did it. I managed to stay awake past midnight. Then again, catching some winks would have been impossible. I was at the second of Flickerstick’s two reunion shows. God damn, they loud.

They also good. Except for some shouty, much-needed conversations with dear old friends I hadn’t seen in years, I caught pretty much the entire set. It was an old-fashioned rock show, with lots of multicolored lights bouncing around to the bombastic riffage and melodies, the big screen behind the stage playing random trippy imagery to accentuate the psychedelic sonic flourishes.

Flickerstick is one of only a few rock bands I know that does pure pop as well as psychedelia. Tension, community, and passion permeate every note regardless.

Frontman Brandin Lea and company were as good as I remembered them from their days tearing up Berry Street and the Ridglea here in the Fort. And even more people than back then had made their way to the House of Blues in Dallas for the band’s two epic, nearly three-hour-long sets — my buddy and his wife came all the way from Pittsburgh, where they had seen Flick a couple times during tours. The last time I’d seen this many people in one place indoors was at a Stars game a few months ago. The last time I’d seen this many people in one place indoors at a “local” rock show was easily the last time Flickerstick played, which had to have been, oh, nearly 20 years ago.

Which brings me to something that bothered me all night at HOB: Are there any unsigned local bands drawing good crowds here? Like in the 500 range? (Is there even a local venue that size?) And if there aren’t any artists who fit that description, then do we know why?

I’m not asking rhetorically. I’m 51 years old with a family, and for the past six and a half years, I’ve been the editor of a 26-year-old magazine publishing investigations into easily unethical, possibly illegal behavior by public officials every week if not every other day. I have neither the time nor the bandwidth to make it to any more than a couple local rock shows a year. Tell me which unsigned local artists put on a good show and, if not packing in 2,500 souls at one time, could be said to be worthy of drawing that many — if only the music gods would turn down the bro country and party rap and listen.

I can name only a few. Quaker City Night Hawks, BULLS, Uncle Toasty, Arenda Light, Mean Motor Scooter — anyone else? I figure if I can sit in the backseat of an economy rental car for nearly two hours to and from Dallas to see a band whose last studio record was in 2004, I can cruise into the Fort for a kickass show by an active local group more than just a couple times a year.

Historic Grapevine hosts its 40th Annual Fourth-of-July Celebration at 9:30pm Mon with 800-foot-high fireworks set to patriotic music over Lake Grapevine at Sand Bass Point (inside Oak Grove Park, 399 Sand Bass Dr). The free show lasts about 20 minutes.

Along with the traditional fireworks, there will be “close-proximity pyrotechnics to create a multi-position diverse mix of effects such as scrambling comets, falling leaves, color-changing peonies, and much more.”

LITTLE ELM Two free simultaneous fireworks shows are happening at July Jubilee in Little Elm at 9:30pm Mon, one at the beach at Little Elm Park (701 W Eldorado Pkwy, 972-731-3296), and the other at Little Elm High School (1900 Walker Ln, 972947-9443). During the fireworks, KHYI/95.3-FM The Range will be live, broadcasting patriotic tunes. The park will be open all day with live music, vendors, and more.

WEATHERFORD The annual Spark in the Park free concert and fireworks show is back for 2022 at Heritage Park (317 Santa Fe Dr, 817-5984124), featuring native Texan country star Mike Ryan with Austin Red Dirt band Micky & The Motorcars 6pm-10pm Mon.
