Wake Up, Work Out, Relax Whether to detox from staycation partying conducted the night before or to still look and feel good for the staycation partying to be done later, start the day with a good, strong workout at any one of several exemplary new gyms, including two in the West 7th Street corridor. Coaching is the key at The Body Firm. The workout facility at 3537 W. 7th St., Ste. 4C, offers smallgroup training, one-on-one training, and intense and efficient boot-camps. For more info, call 817-320-0743 or visit http://thebodyfirm.biz. For the lone wolf, there’s L.A. Fitness. The facility at 2860 Crockett St. offers a mix of state-of-theart equipment and free weights, plus personal training, racquetball and basketball leagues, dance and yoga classes, and more. For more info, call 817-870-1501 or visit www.lafitness.com. At both gyms, you’ll find knowledgeable trainers, sparkling clean equipment, and a welcome dearth of meat-heads. Or maybe your staycation involves a break from everything, including working out (you lazy bum, you). In that case, treat yourself like a queen (or king) and slink into any one of the 817’s most outstanding spas. At the Gaylord Texan Hotel and Convention Center in Grapevine, Relache provides massages, facials, and body treatments, and on site you’ll also find a fitness center, salon, and relaxation pool. In Fort Worth, there’s Perfect Touch (3023 Bledsoe St., 817-870-3610), where you’ll be afforded some of the best in massage therapy, skin care, and body and nail treatments. No matter where you are or what you do, you’ve got to kickstart your metabolism by having a well-balanced breakfast. One recommendation is McKinley’s in University Park Village (1612 S. University Dr., Ste. 402, 817-332-3242). The awardwinning bakery and café offers scrumptious breakfast burritos (scrambled eggs, cheddar and jack cheeses, and salsa in a flour tortilla) for only $2.95 each. Another favorite for brunch or lunch is quiche served with your choice of McKinley’s quiche plate with fruit will get fresh fruit, soup, or salad for $7.50. your day started right. For a mostly liquid start to the day, you have your Starbucks®, but don’t forget about the newly opened House Coffee Bar (915 Florence St. by the intersection of West 7th and Henderson streets near downtown, 817-870-2000), whose frozen blended coffees will keep the summer heat at bay, and also Rodak’s (2520 W. Padford St., 817-924-6821), where in addition to excellent coffee you can The outdoor pool at the Gaylord is perfect also take home a (!) barbecue grill and/or grilling equipment. for winding down after spa treatments.

Get Cultured The urge to take a nap or sit on a patio, do some imbibing, and then take a nap may be strong, young Jedi, but resist the temptation and expand your horizons. All three of Fort Worth’s major museums — the Amon Carter, Kimbell, and the Modern — have their permanent exhibitions on display. The Carter (3501 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-738-1933) will be open ’til 8 p.m. throughout the summer, the latest focus exhibit at the Modern (3200 Darnell St., 817-7389215), on Ben Jones, will be up until early June, and at the Kimbell (3333 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-3328451), you’ll be able to marvel at the museum’s two most recent major acquisitions: Michelangelo’s first known painting and a rare painting by Guercino. Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (1600 Gendy St., 817-255-9300) just opened an exhibit unlocking all the mysteries of one of the greatest men of all time with Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius. The exhibition is sure to satisfy all ages and runs through September 6. Fort Worth Botanic Garden by the Cultural District is great for sightseeing and all, but the grassy lawns scattered between the organic exhibits also make for some excellent Frisbee-tossing and picnicking. And don’t forget to bring along your waggy-tailed four-legged friends. In addition to expanding your horizons on a balmy summer afternoon during your staycation in the 817, you might also want to consider expanding … the contents of your closet. Perennial winner in Fort Worth Weekly’s Best Of issue, Shoe Gypsy (2966 Park Hill Dr., 817-9277700) is your place for rare or hard-to-find shoes — and much more. Faryl Robin, Royal Elastics, Eject, Yellow Box, and Fornarina are just some of the brands available at the TCU-area boutique. Inside the Historic Camp Michelangelo’s first known painting is on display now at the Kimbell. Bowie Mercantile (7200 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-377-0910) is one of the Westside’s most established and esteemed retailers. Time To Dine

Of all the times of the year to solicit the companionship of one or more people, summertime staycation leisure-living in Fort Worth and Arlington is it. You have all fall and winter to duck inside dives, lament the states of things, and nurse whiskeys neat and munch mindlessly on Chex Mix by yourself until enlightenment descends. Summertime, especially here, is for celebrating the fullness of life, and, as was once uttered by a very smart man, nothing’s really ever as good as it can be unless you share it. And we can all probably agree that sharing food — at least eating food together — is the consummate manifestation of loving life. There’s just something about having an awesome meal that’s gratifying on a primal level. Our ancestors, who subsisted on disgusting mush and stomach-churning gruel, would probably be glad to see us so fat and happy. You could probably say that we owe it to them to eat well. And often. Good thing the 817 has almost become synonymous with fine food. As few as two years ago, the number of fine-dining options in the 817 was limited to about five or six places. Now, there are veritably dozens of places where the food is five-star. For a hot date, how about Piola (3700 Mattison Ave., 817-989-0007). The Italian restaurant’s intimate interior engenders the whisperings of sweet nothings, and its back patio, replete with bar, waterfall, and fireplace, is as elegant as Joe T. Garcia’s. Or if you want to go casual try the Ginger Man Pub (3716 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-886-2327). Impress your date with your knowledge of which great beer should accompany your “solids” such as roast beef with ale onions or German bratwurst. For a guys’ or girls’ night, start — and perhaps end at — Chimy’s Mexican Cerveceria (1053 Foch St. in the West 7th St. corridor, 817-348-8888). Kick back on the patio and enjoy ice-cold beer and Tex-Mex served by some of the most attractive servers in town. George’s Specialty Foods (4424 White Settlement Rd., 817-737-0414) offers Greek favorites from salads, dolmas, gyros, and spanakopita that are sure to satisfy, and their specialty store has items to make a Greek feast of your own for your next girls’ night in. With kids? There’s always the lovable Purple Cow (4601 W. Fwy., 817-737-7177). Got a picky eater? Believe it or not Genghis Grill (genghisgrill. com for locations) is perfect for those with a finicky palate. Just grab the bowl, fill it up with everything you like and nothing you don’t, and the experienced chefs will cook it all up for you. The patio is hoppin’ all year round but especially in the summer at Chimy’s

On Stage Summertime is when the 817 theater scene starts to wake up. This summer will be full of laughs. Mostly. From June 24 to July 24 at 230 W. 4th St. downtown, Circle Theatre will present Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible, about two brothers — a visionary and a numbers man — struggling to run a studio at the dawn of a major movie innovation. “If they don’t kill each other first,” Circle says, “they will create … something intangible.” For more information, call 817-877-3040 or visit www.circletheatre.com. On the romantic-comedy tip will be Stage West’s production of Brit-com maestro Alan Ayckbourn’s RolePlay. Justin and Julie-Ann have no idea that their Meet the Parents-style engagement announcement is about to go horribly — and hilariously — wrong. RolePlay plays June 24 through July 25 at the Old Vic, 821 W. Vickery Blvd. on the South Side. Call 817-7849378 or visit stagewest.org. And Theatre Arlington will trot out Ken Ludwig’s uproarious Leading Ladies, about two out-of-work, out-of-money Shakespearean actors who “don petticoats and pearls to pass themselves off as a dying lady’s treasured nieces and inherit her fortune,” says the theatre. Leading Ladies runs from June 4 through July 3 at 305 W. Main St. Call 817275-7661 or visit www.theatrearlington.org. But there won’t be anything funny about Jubilee Theatre’s production of Gem of the Ocean, the ninth in legendary playwright August Wilson’s 10-play cycle documenting the black experience in America. Citizen Barlow visits Aunt Ester, a former slave, on the eve of her 287th birthday and is sent off by her to find a mythic city in the middle of the ocean. On the way, he “makes startling discoveries about guilt, duty, and redemption,” according to the theatre. Gem of the Ocean runs June 4 through 27 at Ashley Padovani and Jason Kennedy star in 506 Main St. in downtown Fort Worth. Call 817-338-4411 or visit www.jubileetheatre.org. Leading Ladies June 4 - July 3 at Theatre Arlington.
