SUMMER GUIDE 2009

eorge Gershwin’s lyrics from so long ago, “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy,” might get some arguments from Texans. We complain repeatedly about the heat in Fort Worth; how the sun hits the sidewalks and radiates upward; how the 95-degree days come one after another for months; and how the electric bills shoot up into the stratosphere. But just like pop culture, it is better to be “hot than not” (ask any of the Fort Worth transplants from the northern climes). The reason for this is how great the heat is once the sun goes down. At night, it is a different world, to paraphrase the Lovin’ Spoonful. Think of it this way: Is there anything more comforting than sitting on a patio where the air temperature is just a little less than your body temp, sipping on a cold beer or margarita and listening to a jazz combo or some country-western jammers? So the best way to deal with the heat is to crank up the AC and the music by day, and enjoy the outdoor comfort and the music by

night. So many bars and restaurants have added patios in recent years, so you can relax by the pool at Joe T. Garcia’s with a great plate of fajitas. Or you can watch the Sundance Square crowd from a sidewalk table at Razoo’s. Maybe hear some great music at the Central Market patio. Because the best way to beat the heat is to embrace it. Put the hats away for three months and go with the shorts and flipflops. Wander up and down Magnolia Avenue for some great outdoor dining and some fun clubs. Maybe just sit on a blanket on the great lawn of the Kimbell Art Museum and watch the kids flying their kites. Maybe the livin’ isn’t easy during the summer months. But the choices Fort Worth provides in shopping and entertainment and recreation makes it very bearable. And at night, it can be oh so serene. So get out there with your friends and family, enjoy the great options Fort Worth has to offer, and remember what it is like in January with those ice storms and bad drivers and those freezing temperatures in, say, the 50s. Which would you rather have, hot or not?

RETAIL THERAPY

ur fair burgh is home to some of the most unique and vibrant independent retailers you’ll find anywhere in this hemisphere. We Fort Worthians have always prided ourselves on our independent spirit, and nowhere is that more evident than in the places we shop. The deck here is stacked with independent, locally owned retailers that specialize in taking care of all their customers’ needs. So, as you’re shopping for a new summer look, remember that going local isn’t just a bumper-sticker slogan. It’s an easy way to find whatever it is you need at a reasonable price. Going local is easy when there are shops like Shoe Gypsy. The men’s and women’s shoe accessory and apparel store near TCU offers a selection of stylish footwear for all seasons. April Lane is a shoe boutique that offers some of the most sought-after designer shoes, handbags, jewelry, and accessories. Hot Poppy Couture brings some of

the world’s most exclusive designer clothes to Fort Worth. Local bike shop Panther City Bicycles, located in Fort Worth’s trendy South Side, has a good selection of bikes, and they can fix up that bike that’s been languishing in your garage. If you want to capture the beautiful Texas landscape this summer, head over to Arlington Camera, a familyowned, family-operated store that’s been pleasing customers for more than 20 years. The staff at Artful Hand scours the country to bring you the finest artisan furniture, glass, ceramics, pottery, clocks, and jewelry. They also feature a selection of recycled art and environmentally friendly artwork. If you’re looking to do some outdoor cooking this summer, Rodak’s sells grills and smokers, handmade in the U.S.A. Rodak’s embodies the independent entrepreneurial spirit of Fort Worth: They also offer custom roasted coffee, and a selection of salsas and spices, and the owner also operates an auto shop.

out & about

SUMMER FUN

Now that saving money is “hot” and/or “in,” heading outdoors for fun has become kind of like the new “going out.” Here are some tips on what to do when you’re consumed by saving dough but are going a little stir crazy. Plus, the only time you’ll be losing your shirt is when you’re taking it off for maximum sunning potential. 1) Ah, ain’t nothin’ like enjoying another wonderful Cowtown summer out at LaGrave Field, watching the hometown Cats make another run at a pennant. Keep an eye on recently signed Korean pitcher Jae Hun Jung. And doesn’t a hot dog with a beer always just taste better at the ballpark? Check out www.fwcats.com for more info. 2) Pack up the blankie, the Frisbee, and the PB&J sammies and head on over to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, the oldest garden of its kind in Texas, with thousands of native and exotic plants spread out across more than 100 acres of land. Plus, there are the Rose Gardens, Japanese Garden, the conservatory, and a 7.5-acre tract of waterfalls and pools filled by the lovable Koi fish. The Garden is on University Drive between TCU and the Cultural District. For more info, visit www.fwbg.org.

2

3) Out on Lake Worth is the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge, 3,500 acres of animal sanctuary and 25 miles of trails that lead to a fossil shell outcrop, a raised boardwalk through a slough, and an area for viewing buffalo and deer. And be on the lookout for the meadow that turns into a veritable bed of bluebonnets. The center is located 10 miles northwest of Fort Worth, at the intersection of Farm Road 1886 and Hwy 199. Visit www.fwnaturecenter.org for more information.

1

4) You’d be amazed at how many of us forget about the Trinity Trails, miles of biking/cycling and running/walking trails mainly along the banks of the river after which the trails are named. Folks interested in getting started in pedaling are advised to contact the Fort Worth Bicycling Association, one of the largest clubs of its kind in North Texas, with more than 600 members. Riders of all shapes, sizes, skill levels — and ages — are welcome to join. For more information, visit www.fwbaclub.org.

5) No better time than the summer to hit the links. Hack away at any one of Fort Worth’s several public golf courses: Pecan Valley (originally designed by legendary golf-course architect Ralph Plummer in 1963), Rockwood (“The Rock” opened in 1938), the 9-hole Sycamore Creek, Z Boaz, and Meadowbrook, which is considered one of the top 25 municipal golf courses in Texas, courtesy of its rolling terrain and 71 par. Check out www.fortworthgolf.org for more info.

ort Worth Weekly’s annual Music Awards festival is a free daylong concert that takes place in several clubs in the Sundance Square area and features nearly three-dozen of the city’s best bands, from rockers like Calhoun and The Burning Hotels to twangers like Maren Morris and all genres in between. Don’t miss this year’s festival, on Sun., June 28th. Visit www.fwweekly.com. Sundance Square once again brings the silver screen to the great outdoors, presenting Stars Under the Stars, a series of movies in the Chisholm Trail Parking Lot (between 4th and Main streets). On tap this summer are The Pink Panther, Young Frankenstein, City Slickers, and Top Gun. Showtime is at dusk, and admission is free. Check out www.sundancesquare. com for more info. See great live music on the lawn of Magnolia Green Park every first Friday of the month through October. Bring your family, friends, four-legged friends, blankets and/or lawn chairs, but leave your coolers at home — food and beverages are available for sale. Admission is free, but organizers ask that you bring donations for the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Brought to you by Fort Worth South Inc. and the Weekly. Visit www.fortworthsouth.org. Catch some death-defying freestyle motocross on Sat., June 27, at the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, one of several stops along the Red Bull X-Fighters 2009 World Series tour (that begins in Mexico City

Fort Worth Weekly Summer Guide 2009

and ends in London). Last year was the Fort’s first experience with the series. Things went so well that Fort Worth was added to this year’s run. For more information, visit www.fortworthstockyards.org. We all know the Botanic Garden looks beautiful, but during the summer the vaunted near-Westside locale sounds beautiful, too, because that’s when Concerts in the Garden takes place. As in years past, this year’s schedule belongs mainly to the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra — Maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s group will perform almost every other weekend through the series’ end in July. But there are some non-classical treats, too, including Mingo Fishtrap, The N’awlins Gumbo Kings, and Jailhouse Rock: A Tribute to Elvis. Check out www.fwbg.org for more.

A Red Bull X-Fighter takes to the skies at the Stockyards.

FOOD AND DRINKS

f you’re the type that thinks globally but acts locally, first of all, stop being so cliché, and, secondly, you can now apply that way of thinking to your restaurant dining habits. Luckily, the 817 offers a wide variety of world-class eateries that represent all corners of the globe and everywhere in between. For those who prefer their dining experiences mui caliente, there are enough restaurants representing south of the border to satisfy even the most discriminating Latin-lover. Gloria’s in Montgomery Plaza features a taste of El Salvador and has live salsa bands every weekend. Benito’s on Mad-nolia (Magnolia Avenue) is serving up authentic Mexican until 2am on weekends. Boi Na Braza Churrascaria in Grapevine and Chapa Grill in Fort Worth serve some of the North Texas’ best Brazilian. If you’re feeling a little Italian, Sardines Ristorante Italiano’s dimly lit, jazz-inspired ambience is second only to the buttery, garlic-y greatness of their ciao (or chow). Palermo’s Italian Café offers all of the classics in a relaxed setting. For the white table cloth crowd, Ruffino’s on Forest Park serves only the finest ingredients prepared by top-flight chefs. For the beret and baguette type, Cacharel has been wowing Arlington diners for more than 20

years, and the panoramic view is almost as epic as the food. In the West Seventh area of Fort Worth, St. Emilion’s cozy and quaint setting sets the scene for some breathtaking classic French fare. For a little slice of the Mediterranean on South Hulen in Fort Worth, Bistro Louise restaurant, the Fort’s only four-diamond restaurant, has carved out a well-deserved reputation for cutting-edge creations. Deutschland is also well represented locally. You’ll be saying danke schön after dancing and dining the night away at Edelweiss, one of Fort Worth’s oldest and most beloved restaurants. Save room for dessert at Bavarian Bakery and Café. The quaint atmosphere and sparkling German cooking is a must try. The Middle and far East are strongly represented in Tarrant County. There’s never a lack of Asian-inspired restaurants. Be Le Vietnamese in Arlington, Szechuan Chinese restaurant, and Tokyo Café in Fort Worth represent some of the best. If you’re a curry fan, Bombay Grill has all of the classics. Al Harra’s in Arlington offers a unique setting for Middle-Eastern fare and always fresh ingredients. Byblos Lebanese Restaurant and Hookha Lounge is a great place to relax and sample some classic Lebanese cuisine. Chadra Mezza and Grill in Fort Worth has something for everyone.
