SUMMER ART
See some fantastic visual art – and make some of your own – this season of sunshine.
Admire the work of Fort Worth photorealist Dennis Blagg at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (3200 Darnell St, Cultural District, 817-738-9215) among many first-rate creations by nearly all of the giants of Modernism, Post-Modernism, and contemporary art, including Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol. Selections from the Permanent Collection is on view indefinitely. The Modern building, designed by Pritzker Prize winner Tadao Ando, is also a treat, with its calming reflecting pool and peaceful second-story sculpture garden.
The Kimbell Art Museum (3333 Camp Bowie Blvd, Cultural District, 817- 332-8451) also is displaying selections from its permanent collection this summer. The Kimbell’s collection is mighty, representing an extraordinary level of artistic quality and historical significance and going back as far as the third millennium B.C. Since the days of the museum’s first director, Richard F. Brown (circa the 1960s), the Kimbell has striven for quality rather than completeness – the collection features such luminaries as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Monet, Cezanne, Picasso, and Matisse. Admission to the Kimbell’s permanent collection is free. On view now through Sun, Jun 19, at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (3501 Camp Bowie Blvd, Cultural District, 817-738-1933) is The Hudson River School: Nature and the American Vision, featuring 45 early 19th-century landscape paintings from the style’s leading purveyors, including Frederic Edwin Church, John Frederick Kensett, and Thomas Cole, the group’s inspirational leader.
If looking at all of this art gets your creative juices flowing, then gather up the BFFs, significant others, and family members and hit either one or both of Fort Worth’s paint-and-party places. BYOB to A Piece of Work (5714 Locke Av, Near West Side, 817-737-7700) or Painting with a Twist (2605 S Cherry Ln, West Side, 817-546-0543). You bring the hooch and enthusiasm, and the experts at both places will take care of the rest to allow everyone to leave with his or her own masterpiece.

SUMMER GUIDE 2011
Fort Worth101 OUTDOORS You seemingly can’t throw a stone without hitting a body of water here in North Texas, but for a break from the lake (or river), swing by the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge (9601 Fossil Ridge Rd, 76135-9148, 817-392-7410). Guided tours are always available, and you’re sure to encounter bison and prairie dogs. You’ll want to stay out of the water, though –– unless you wanna wrastle a gator. For more information, visit www.fwnaturecenter.org.
THEATER
FOOD Fort Worth is more than just burgers and barbecue. The finedining scene here is chock full of standout establishments. You’ve got the old standbys –– Bistro Louise, Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House, Reata –– but there are some new players as well. Located on the Near South Side, Ellerbe Fine Foods (1501 W Magnolia Av, 817-926-3663) was recently named one of the top 10 best new restaurants in the country by Bon Appétit magazine, and the head chef and co-owner of Brownstone (840 Currie St, W 7th St corridor, 817-332-1555) is Casey Thompson, a finalist on the popular reality TV show Top Chef.
The biggest deal in the Fort Worth theater world every summer is the annual Fort Worth Opera Festival, spread out over the course of a couple of months and featuring at least four productions. Onstage now are Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, Verdi’s Il Trovatore, Handel’s Julius Caesar, and Hydrogen Jukebox, a collaboration between minimalist composer Philip Glass and legendary Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. All of the productions are at Bass Performance Hall except Hydrogen Jukebox, which takes place at Sanders Theater in the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. For more info, please visit www.fwopera.org.
MUSIC As there’s more to Fort Worth food than burgers and barbecue, there’s way much more to Fort Worth music than Country and Western. In fact, Fort Worth is blossoming into an indie-rock nirvana, with dozens of on-the-verge bands (including The Burning Hotels, Calhoun, The Orbans, Telegraph Canyon, Fate Lions, The Hanna Barbarians, and the Quaker City Night Hawks) and indie-friendly venues, especially Lola’s Saloon (3627 W 6th St, W 7th St corridor), The Grotto (517 University Dr, Cultural District), and The Moon (2911 W Berry St, TCU area).
FESTIVAL SEASON Summertime means all different kinds of festivals in the Fort, especially the 14th or 15th Annual Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards Festival, a day-long celebration of Fort Worth music on Sun, Jun 26, at eight West 7th corridor venues: The Backyard at Capital Bar, Fred’s Texas Café, The Grotto, Lola’s Saloon, Magnolia Motor Lounge, Poag Mahone’s, The Pour House, and the 7th Haven. Slated to perform are some of the awesome-est bands in town, including Calhoun, The Burning Hotels, The Orbans, Josh Weathers & The True+Endeavors, Spoonfed Tribe, Fate Lions, Stella Rose, Whiskey Folk Ramblers, KatsuK, Sally Majestic, Pinkish Black, The Hendersons, The Spiral Sound, and literally dozens more, nearly 50 in total. The best part? Admission to the event is free. SUMMER GUIDE 2011
