award winning kitchen makeovers
After Makeover
Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen
My Kitchen was completed last month and I am thrilled with it. Our project was a fairly large one, which involved removing a wall, stripping out the old kitchen, laying a new machined oak floor and then finally installing the new kitchen.
Ben was always on the end of the phone to provide advice and support which was invaluable. We worked together to plan the kitchen but Ben had many useful suggestions, all of which I ran with and I am so happy with the final result.

At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

NEIL SIMON’S AFFECTIONATE COMEDY ANTIQUES & COLLECTABLES THE SUNSHINE BOYS COMES TO VALUATION DAY - CHERITON TITCHFIELD FESTIVAL THEATRE Some special antiques and Two aging Vaudeville actors Willie Clarke and Al Lewis were a popular performing act for more than 40 years, before parting ways following Al’s decision to retire. The pair have not spoken for more than a decade; however a TV network is keen to reunite them both and Willie is reluctantly persuaded to meet again. The scene is set in Willie’s hotel room for a rehearsal giving them the chance to rebuild their relationship… Neil Simon’s brilliant and affectionate comedy The Sunshine Boys was a massive success on Broadway when it first opened and has subsequently been made into a film starring the legendary stars, Walter Matthau and George Burns. This October, Titchfield Festival Theatre audiences have the opportunity to enjoy it too. The play explores the challenges couples face as they get older, including the occasional stubbornness, childishness and other frustrations that can occur with age. Stuart Hibbard, director of The Sunshine Boys, explains why audiences will love the great banter and warm, witty lines written by the playwright Neil Simon, who sadly died last month.

“The Sunshine Boys is a funny play that will make you laugh and contains plenty of physical comedy that makes it so appealing. The two actors are actually quite different in personality; Willie can be difficult and argumentative whilst Al is more relaxed. How the couple seek to address these differences and prepare for their first professional appearance in 12 years is pointed too; can these two backbiting comics find a way of working together again? Come along and see whether they can perform their most famous act one more time.” The Sunshine Boys opens on Wednesday 10th October until Saturday 20th October at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG. A matinee performance will be on Sunday 14th October at 2.30pm. For more information, please go to http://titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/ or contact our Box Office on: 01329 556156.

COUNCILLOR KIM A GOTTLIEB ALRESFORD & ITCHEN VALLEY The theme for this year’s Heritage Open Days Festival was ‘Extraordinary Women’. The idea was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote - at least some of them. The Festival was a great success and the theme was highlighted by many distinguished visitors to Winchester including Dame Jenni Murray and Michael Wood, and by many ‘home grown’ talents such as Professor Joanna Lewis. Alresford did its bit by opening up the Eel House to over 200 visitors. The theme would also have also resonated in and around Alresford which itself has a tremendous array of extraordinary women who have risen to the top of sciences and arts, politics and medicine and every other walk of life, irrespective of the hurdles they have had to overcome. The ones who perhaps have impressed me the most, when their stories emerge, are the decreasing number of survivors who had active and extraordinary roles in WW2. That generation, it seems, never needed to parade their achievements on
LOCAL AUTHOR SHARES COURAGEOUS MESSAGE
The Courage Foundation UK is a childbereavement charity based in Chandlers Ford, It raises money to send children bereaved of a sibling or parent on fun days out, to forget their troubles and to understand that they can still enjoy themselves. After meeting its founder, Ruth Palmer, in the school playground, author Caroline Meech, originally from Bishops Waltham, has recently self-published her first novel ‘Sifting Sand’ on
TV or on social media, and just quietly got on with whatever they had to deal with in the extraordinary circumstances of the time. Over the weekend General Sir Antony Walker KCB reminded us of the extraordinary efforts of women during WW1 too. One of my favourite events was put on by an arts group which wanted to address the lack of public statues featuring women. Apparently, out of 925 public statues in England, only 158 are of women, and that if you exclude the royals and mythical figures there were only 25. They have created 25 more statues of extraordinary women, one of whom is Winchester’s very own ‘community sports campaigner’ Emma Back who, for several years, has battled for a sports centre worthy of the ‘Olympic legacy’ aspiration. It occurred to me how sport was a ‘feminist issue’. Women’s sports lag well behind in financial and other stakes, yet at the same time provide wonderful opportunities for putting women on a more level footing, whilst promoting physical and mental well-being for women of all ages. It’s thus disappointing to note that whilst local councillors Margot Power and Jackie Porter share my view that the new sports centre at Bar End should aim to provide for all sports, Lisa Griffiths (chair of the centre committee) has taken a far narrower approach and is backing a sports hall design that will disappoint netball, gymnastics, indoor hockey and other female dominated sports. The ‘game’ is far from over. Amazon and donates profits to the charity by way of support. Caroline shares the reason why with us. “I met Ruth in 2016 whilst I was still penning my novel, it was a form of therapy for me as I suffered with Post Natal Depression. Meeting Ruth for the first time was like a breath of fresh air. Despite losing her son, Jethro Courage whom The Courage Foundation is named after, Ruth chooses to live life in a positive and uplifting way. She changed my whole outlook on life and my mental health which led to my recovery. Donating the profits from Sifting Sand is my way of paying her back. Ruth’s courage literally gave me the courage to fight for my future.” Caroline’s second book, a children’s first chapter book ‘You can’t be friends with a troll, Dotty!’ is due to be released before the end of the year. As well as supporting the charity, Caroline is also working with Crestwood Community School to encourage young artists. She is running a competition to find an illustrator for the book and the winner will not only be published worldwide, they will also receive the first, signed copy to keep.
WINCHESTER OKTOBERFEST 2018

They are available by calling the Box Office on 01962 840500 Krista Dawkins, Head Teacher at Crestwood is enthusiastic about the prospect of working with a local author, “To have a Caroline involve our students in such a way is wonderful. We’re so excited to be involved!” Books are priced at £10 including p&p and £4 from each book purchased directly from the author herself will be donated directly to The Courage Foundation. say 4pm, and it is the same across the country, sports halls often have surplus capacity. Our task is to ensure that we can provide activities to attract residents into the centre during those times; we cannot force people to take up activity – even though we all know we should perhaps! Population and participation levels, including anticipated growth based on our above average activity levels, have resulted in 8 court being more than sufficient capacity.
WINCHESTER SPORT & LEISURE PARK, BAR END The planning application is due to be heard in October 2018. Sport England removed their holding objection and South Downs National Park have raised no objections. The new football pitches at King George V playing fields have now opened – to great success and delight of the Winchester City Flyers! The Amateur Boxing Club has moved to its new venue! We continue to seek a venue for a rebound centre (or gymnastics and trampolining).
We have an excess of hall space around the district and not all participants wish to have to travel to Winchester City. We also need to bear in mind that a larger building, which some are still calling for, would mean certain objection from SDNP due to increased bulk, lower the building further is inadvisable due to underground water courses and risks to flooding (frequently raised by local residents), and from Sport England and the Football Association as we would be certain to lose a further football pitch. The increased cost would mean a burden on all residents across the District, including those who will never use the centre.
Sports Clubs largely use a sports hall after 6pm, although junior level may commence earlier with after school activities. During the opening hours, this means that from 6am through to

HAROLD HILLIER GARDENS The Harold Hillier Gardens have been open for 40 years this year. HCC has also re-opened Lepe and other sites they own with improved services. The income from County owned sites contributes to the income for the whole council, so investing in the ‘loo, brew and view’ makes a contribution to other services as well as offering a great day out. BUS PASSES AND CHARGES FOR PENSIONERS Many commented that the questions in the recent consultation were leading ones, but talking to residents, there are so many different opinions about this. Many feel that 50p per journey could be just the start, as the price would inevitably rise. Others complain that if a visit to your hospital or doctor requires two buses, that would be a total cost of £2. Others say it is ridiculous that well off pensioners are getting free journeys by bus. What do you think? ELECTRIC CARS - DO YOU OWN ONE? I’d like to hear how it works for you. If you‘d like to contribute to a Forum, please email me- I hope to hold a meeting for electric car drivers in November to hear of ways in which the Council could be encouraging us all to use electric vehicles. ALRESFORD EEL HOUSE
This is the 10th Anniversary of the re-opening of the Restored Eel House to the public. A total of 7950 have visited the Eel House, and there are 2 Open Days left this year namely 27th August and 16th September. The restoration has been a very enjoyable but difficult project led by David Woods. A structural survey by Jon Milliken is being carried out to produce drawings to repair the arches nearest to the footpath. The work being done is sensitive, as suitable diversions of the river will be needed, with white-clawed crayfish needing to be accommodated whilst this work is carried out. The footpath itself will need to be re-instated and HCC are involved with this aspect. The survey should be completed in the next few weeks, and it is hoped that the work will be carried out by December 2018. Robin Atkins - Chair

HAMPSHIRE MUM
NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING TIGER
S
o the summer weeks were slowly drifting by hampered only by the heat haze they were carrying. We Pagans settled into the routine of eating al fresco and the pace of life slowed. Star II was in his element, released from the confines of school and enjoying his newfound freedom, courtesy of the Hampshire roamer ticket that allowed him to travel the delights of our county on the bus with his chums for very little money. He would send a text from here and there assuring me of his whereabouts so all was fine. Or so I thought… It’s the phone call every parent dreads. ‘Is that Mrs. Sandra Pagan?’ Oh not more washing machine insurance, fake internet problems or doom laden pension prophecies- “Yes it is.”
“ This is P.C Eversonice we have your son and his friend here in hospital. I’m sorry to tell you they have been assaulted.” “Sorry what did you say? Assaulted? In our local Cathedral City?” “ Don’t worry they are quite alright but we need you to come in so we can take a statement” “I’ll be there in twenty minutes.” “No Mrs. Pagan you will be here in thirty five minutes – drive sensibly”. Of course every mechanical thing with a maximum speed of twenty- five as well as continuous red traffic lights hampered my drive. With panic and frustration rising I screeched to a halt in an inappropriate space near A and E. I cannot describe the fear of what I was to find, but oh so fortunately their injuries were minor as the assault was interrupted by a brave member of staff from our Cathedral Cities’ School of Art. Otherwise who knows how they would have
faired in an unprovoked assault by nine yobs who clearly had no compunction about attacking two boys considerably younger than themselves at half past one in the afternoon. PC Eversonice took a statement and Star II was thoroughly checked over before being allowed to leave. Now I’m normally pretty good in a crisis, quite calm and organized.Yet once home and with Star II fed, watered, counselled and rested I came over all rather peculiar, shaken for sure but also stirred. By nature I am rather passive, anything for a quiet life that’s me, but the more I thought about what had happened, and the worst case scenario of what might have been, the more the inner tigress stirred. There can be no denying that here in our Market Town we do live in a bubble, and a very nice bubble it is too. A comparably safe haven for our kids to grow up in, a place where they shouldn’t have to worry about who’s coming up behind them. How dare they hurt my boy! I felt powerless on his behalf, or was I? Thoughts of retribution flooded my mind; I wanted to be powerful to and go to the ‘Beastly’ place, from whence it had been suggested they came from, seek them out, after all a tiger does not shout it’s tigertude, it acts. Yet what could I do? Be clad in black seek them out in the dead of night leave them blooded and bashed without a trace? That make’s me as bad as them surely? No I had no option but to sharpen my claws and then retract them and think how sad it is that unless they are helped change their lives may well be already on the wrong road. Next time they awaken a tiger they may not be so fortunate. BY SANDRA PAGAN

and exhibitions, she can certainly claim to have achieved this. Featuring over 40 artists from all over the UK and beyond, Nadia’s exhibitions are housed in a large, light-filled barn near Stockbridge which enjoys extensive views across the Hampshire countryside making it a gloriously ambient spot for admiring great art.
NADIA WATERFIELD FINE ART EXHIBITIONS Whether you are an experienced art connoisseur or simply looking to fall in love with something breath-taking for your home, Nadia Waterfield Fine Art offers a wonderfully eclectic mix of paintings, sculptures and ceramics from around the world. Nadia’s aim is to bring as much art culture to the countryside as possible and make it easily accessible for people to enjoy under one roof. And over the last 10 years of running art fairs
It is essential to the ethos of NWFA that the exhibitions are kept fresh, unique, diverse and of high quality. To this end Nadia spends an enormous amount of time sourcing art from up and coming artists and visiting them in their studios. Every artist exhibiting at NWFA has had time invested in what they do and been hand-picked to reach out to a broad audience of art buyers. Nadia likes nothing more than showcasing a new talent who is well received.
At the gallery Nadia also runs stimulating programmes of art workshops for adults and children. She brings in other well-regarded tutors to teach different mediums. In addition art lectures are held at the gallery, run in conjunction with major art shows taking place in London. Nadia believes in looking after her clients holistically and personally. She is able to do home consultations, advise on picture framers and also offers a restoration service. For Nadia exposing people to a cross-section of interesting, beautiful – sometimes unusual – invariably stimulating, art is not simply a job, it’s a passion! www.nadiawaterfieldfineart.com

NEW GRANT SCHEME TO INCREASE AFFORDABLE HOUSING STOCK
T
he South Downs National Park Authority is launching a new grant scheme, using money paid by developers, to deliver more affordable housing in the South Downs. Grants of between £10,000 and £30,000 are now available for affordable dwellings constructed on rural exceptions sites (sites that would not be granted planning permission for open market housing) or for affordable housing delivered through community-led initiatives such as Community Land Trusts. The National Park has some of the highest house prices in the country. Properties are in high demand with towns and villages regularly appearing in property sections under headlines such as ‘most desirable’, ‘prettiest’, ‘happiest’ etc. High-income urban households looking to move into the countryside and a shortage of land add to the problem. Margaret Paren, Chair of the South Downs National Park Authority, said:
“Our new grants will contribute to the delivery of desperately needed affordable homes in the National park.Whilst all affordable dwellings on these special sites will be eligible, our funding will be aimed at social homes to be rented at the lowest rates possible, with the aim to keep the housing affordable in perpetuity. We want them to become permanent additions to the stock of affordable homes in the South Downs National Park.” The consequences of a lack of affordable housing are severe with low income families facing a difficult future – having to move, leaving support and employment networks behind. This can destabilise villages, forcing out low income households and starving local services of employees and customers. With many jobs in the National Park being relatively low paid, people often can’t afford to live near their work and will often have to drive, an added expense which also increases traffic congestion and pollution. The recently submitted South Downs Local Plan recognises the scale of this issue and seeks provision for affordable housing on both large and small developments. If endorsed by the Planning Inspectorate, new policies will require that 50 per cent of dwellings in developments of 11 or more homes should be affordable. For developments smaller than this there would be a sliding scale with, for example. a development with eight houses having to deliver three affordable homes or a development with four or five houses having to deliver one affordable home. Even developers building just three new homes would be required to make a financial contribution towards affordable housing. People involved in community led housing initiatives who would like to know more about the grant scheme should contact mark.alden@southdowns.gov.uk

ANDY FIELDS NEW HEAD COACH FOR ALRESFORD RUGBY CLUB
W
hen you meet Andy Fields you cannot help but be struck by his calm yet steely disposition and the utter determination in his eyes. Born and bred in Winchester he spent many years living abroad.
He now teaches A level Sport at Queen Mary College in Basingstoke and had been the coach at Winchester Rugby Club for seven years. “I wanted a break from rugby coaching so left Winchester but two of the ARFC players eventually persuaded me to take on the position of Head Coach at Alresford. Andy knows the sport of rugby from both sides having been a player himself. “ There is no finer moment than when you put on an England shirt as I did when playing for the England Under 21 Team. I had the privilege to be on the pitch with Martin Johnson- he was head and shoulders above anyone else. I also played at international level while living in Hong Kong” Like so many rugby players injury took its’ toll. “I’ve had a couple of knee ops and problems with the discs in my neck”. Andy is adamant that rugby is so much more than a mere game. The lessons learnt on the pitch respect, resilience, teamwork, conviction, passion, endeavor and comradeship – are also invaluable tools for life at any age. “ The Teams of ARFC are predominantly made up of local lads, most of them know each other socially or through work as well as on the pitch.” Andy is emphatic “I have ambition for them. It’s very easy for them to think of themselves as a ‘little local team’ so they need to change their mind set; understand and believe that they are a great team, with possibly
some of the best pitches available anywhere. They need know when they play the bigger teams they have an absolute right to be there. That’s how they will win.The League has recently been restructured which means that the bigger teams like Portsmouth for example can play their second team against our first team in the Hampshire League.” How does Andy pick his team? “ I may not necessarily pick the very best player each week but rather the one who always turns up for training despite the weather, someone with commitment deserves a chance. We have some tough games coming up Bognor away and Sandown and Shanklin, but my aim is to have won twelve games by seasons end in April and to rise up the league.” Is that possible? “Absolutely, no question. It’s not just me, I have amazing support around me here. Billy Lovegrove the new Captain, our new Physiotherapist Charlotte,Vice Chairman Scott Cleve and my assistant Andy James, who has done wonders with the young and talented back line, without them I couldn’t do my job. Of course it takes commitment from the teams too, we train once a week regardless.” Does Andy want to develop the ARFC further? “ Times have changed men will often feel they are not built for rugby, some prefer sports such as golf and many have busy jobs and family obligations so it can be hard to recruit new members. Of course we welcome new members to the club, but I’m really lucky to have the squad and to have the opportunity to help them succeed further.” ARFC: Facebook. Instagram Alresfordrfc.weebly.com

STREET PARTY RAISES FUNDS FOR THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ‘THANK YOU’ MOVEMENT On Saturday 8th September, Hambrooks held a ‘Street Party’ for Southampton Veterans and Royal British Legion (RBL) members at their Garden Design Centre in Titchfield. The event raised over £200 funds for the RBL ‘Thank You’ movement, which involves activities in the last 100 days from the 8th August to the 11th November to mark the final year of the World War One (WW1) centenary. The RBL Hampshire County Chairman, Tim Russell and his partner Averil attended along with Gerry Nunn RBL representative of the Membership Council. Other attendees included members of the Southampton Veteran’s Club, Admiral Nurses from the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, and members of the Dynamo Club Southampton. Women who worked for the war effort formed this club just after the end of WW1. Hambrooks has turned one of their show gardens into ‘The Garden of Gratitude’ decorated out with a plaque of dedication, a RBL silhouette, poppies and a wreath made and donated by Lockswood WI. The Cowplain Ukulele Players played popular war songs in the garden followed by readings of WW1 war poems by Hambrooks’ staff. Guess were treated to a buffet lunch and a raffle with prizes donated by Hambrooks. Assistant manager Frankie Banking said, “We are very proud to be able to play a part in the Royal British Legion’s ‘Thank you’ campaign, helping not just to raise awareness but also to raise vital funds. Here at Hambrooks we have a legacy of 48 years in business with a long history of employing local ex servicemen. This together with Hampshire’s association with the Royal Navy and other military makes the Royal British Legion an ideal partnership.” Frankie Banting 01489 873948

BROTHERS IN ALMS B rother George lives in ‘The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty’, the oldest continuing medieval alms-house in Great Britain. His comfortable apartment is tucked away beyond a stone gatehouse, out of earshot of the traffic which rumbles in and out of Winchester along the St Cross Road. Up to 25 brothers make their homes in the alms houses and Brother George describes their tranquil lives here, when he takes visitors on tours of the Hospital.
Each doorway in the fifteenth century alms-house leads to four apartments. Behind the ancient façade, the apartments are modern but still contain the original huge ceiling timbers.Their windows overlook a manicured lawn towards the Church of St Cross and the Brethren’s Hall in which three Gaudy lunches are held each year, hosted by The Master (an ordained Priest). This all makes The Hospital sound like an Oxford college, but instead of an education, it has been providing hospitality and care for the poor here for almost 900 years. George Watkinson first came to St Cross as an audio engineer, to upgrade the sound system of the church. He fell in love with the place, never imagining that he would be able to live here when he retired. Becoming ‘Brother George’ was more straightforward than he expected. He met the criteria of being single, retired and able to live independently (this is not a nursing home) and applied to live here. George attended an interview with the Master, which he discovered is not as daunting as it sounds. ‘Just a cup of tea and ten minutes’ general conversation to see whether I would fit in,’ he says. Then he was invited to stay in the guest flat for 48 hours, to see whether he would like it. ‘I loved it so much, I didn’t want to go home!’ George moved into the alms-house and was gowned as a Black Brother of ‘The Order of the Hospital of St Cross’. He wears a black gown and hat for formal occasions and each morning when attending matins in the Chapel. There are also Red Brothers, who belong to ‘The Almshouse of Noble Poverty’ and wear claret gowns and hats.Whether you become a Black or Red Brother depends on the vacancies available. Neither is a religious order and outside
the daily service, the Brothers lead secular lives. Some volunteer to become tour guides and, like George, love meeting visitors from all round the world. George has met several celebrities whilst living in the Hospital of St Cross, as it is a popular location for film crews. He was delighted to be introduced to Mark Rylance during a break in filming Wolf Hall and said it was fascinating to see the cast wandering around in the gardens in their Tudor costumes. The actors really brought the ancient buildings alive. Beside accommodating the Brothers, one of the Hospital’s founding social services was to feed one hundred poor men at the gates every day. Even now, visitors can request the ‘wayfarer’s dole’ (a piece of bread and a drink of beer) at the porter’s lodge. The dough for the bread was made in the bread room, which contains a marble-topped table so heavy it could not be lifted by 10 men. The table top was a present from our founder Henry de Blois, to his brother Steven who became King of England around about 1338.The medieval kitchen, where the bread was baked, was in use until 1952.The huge fire made the kitchen so hot that people could only work in there for 40 minutes before they had to go outside to cool down. In contrast, the meat store room next door was cooled to 8OC below the outdoor temperature by a stream diverted beneath the floor - medieval environmental engineering in action. Wayfarers and other visitors are welcome to visit the Hospital every day except Sunday, when it is open for church services. Groups of 10 and more can book a tour with one of the Brothers. Summertime Opening is 1st April-end of October 9.30am-5pm Monday-Saturday and 1pm-5pm on Sundays Winter Opening is 1st November-31st March 10.30am-3.30pm Monday-Saturday. Closed on Sundays. We currently also have vacancies for single retired gentlemen with a need to live here. For more information, please see http://hospitalofstcross.co.uk IRIS CROWFOOT - iris.crowfoot@gmail.com

PUTTING ON A SHOW, GETTING YOU MOBILE AND DISCO FEVER! September 1st saw another hugely successful Alresford Show with up to 10,000 people enjoying the day. As always your Pigs were out in force marshalling the car parks and ticket booths as well as acting as safety stewards. It’s a marvel of organisation with the Pigs and 320 well-drilled volunteers giving up their time to help keep this wonderful event such a valuable addition on our calendar.
ITCHEN VALLEY CHOIR Are you looking to join a choir? If so we would love to welcome you! We are a friendly group of singers who aspire to reach high standards. well and develop a relationship based on trust and understanding of the clients’ needs. Jan Gapper, Director of Care, says ‘We aim to deliver the level of care which I would be happy for a member of my own family to receive. We do this by training and investing in our dedicated team of CAREGivers on a continual basis to ensure we deliver the highest standard and quality of care so that our service is the best it can be.’
JON, JAN AND STEVE GAPPER
The Central Hampshire branch of Home Instead was set up in 2011 by Jan and Steve Gapper from Winchester, who were joined last year by their son, Jon. They specialise in providing non-medical care for older people in their own homes, covering Alresford, Winchester, Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford. Finding care for elderly loved ones to allow them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible can be daunting. Home Instead Senior Care Central Hampshire can help. Whether it is personal care, companionship or home help, their care services are personalised and tailored to meet each individual’s unique needs. They set out to provide care of an exceptional quality. Their CAREGivers are matched to the client, and spend a minimum of one hour with them on every visit, so they get to know each other
The team at Home Instead specialise in dementia care and often run free workshops and drop-in sessions for the local community. These sessions are informal, with no obligation, but have come about from a desire to help local families facing the uncertainty which comes for caring for a loved one with dementia. Home Instead is the only care provider certified to deliver accredited City & Guilds Dementia training to its CAREGivers, meaning families seeking home care services for a loved one with dementia can rest assured their family member will be in good hands. If you are interested in learning more about home care services, or would like to apply to join their friendly team as a CAREGiver, please feel free to pop in to their offices, call 01962 736681 or email hants@homeinstead. co.uk
Did you know that amazingly, Hampshire County Council have decided that no crutches or Zimmer frames left at the waste tip can be bought or recycled into the community, because of the potential insurance claim that might result if one failed? Similarly the NHS does not recycle such equipment so they do not have to clean, inspect or check them. It all goes to scrap! Well fortunately your Pigs CAN be bothered to do all that so our Mobility Team also provides these as well as Mobility Scooters and Walkers to those in the town who need them. Finally we’re dying to see you at our Autumn Fundraiser, a Halloween Disco at Perins School on October 13th. Music from DJs Andy Fawcett and Frederik Ekander, Dress – ‘To Die For’. Tickets are £12.50 available from www. alresfordpigs.org The Alresford Pigs Association is a small charity comprised of people who either live or work in Alresford and come together to raise money to given financial help to those in need in Alresford and the surrounding villages. We have given money for: • Organisations such as the scouts, guides, sports & youth groups • Local schools for specific projects • School children unable to pay for school trips • Single families needing white goods • Families who need support that cannot be provided by other services • Mobility scooters • Park benches • Senior residents events and activities
Do you know someone who needs our help? • Call us on 01962-658961 • Email us at info@alresfordpigs.org • Message us on Facebook @AlresfordPigs The Alresford Pigs Association is a registered charity (charity no. 1163001)

ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS
Candover Valley/Itchen Valley/Medstead/Bighton/Ropley Afternoon of Monday 15th October
FLU CLINICS 2018 As we announced last month, this year’s walk-in clinics are going to be for patients aged 65 and over only (DOB on or before 31st March 1954).
Please phone the surgery as soon as possible to let us know if you need a home visit. Bookable appointments are now available for patients under 65 and at risk and over 65’s who are unable to attend the above clinics. CLOSED FOR TRAINING The Dispensary is closed for staff training every Wednesday 12-1pm.
Weds 3rd October 1:00-2:30pm Wed 10th October 1:00-2:30pm For residents of Makins Court and Ellingham Close, the Practice Nurse will visit on Tuesday 2nd October at 9:30 and 11:00 respectively, and there will be a clinic at Preston Candover Village Hall on Monday 15th October 9:30-10:30. Patients who are under 65 and at risk (including pregnant women) can also be vaccinated at these clinics. If you are already being seen by the District Nurse or the Proactive Care Nurse (Zoe Denyer) he/she will be able to give you your flu jab. For other truly housebound patients who are unable to get to the surgery, the Practice Nurse can visit you at home. In order to streamline her visits we are splitting her home visits into two sessions.
MISSED APPOINTMENTS During July 2018 83 booked GP and nurse appointments were not attended. This is equivalent to almost 14 hours wasted, time in which, other patients could have been seen and at a cost to the NHS. Please remember to cancel your appointment if you no longer need it. Help us to help you. The surgery runs a text reminder service; patients are sent reminders of appointments. If the appointment is no longer required it can be cancelled easily with a text reply. To take advantage of this service you just need to make sure that the Practice has an up to date mobile number.

NHS CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF SERVING BRITISH
FUND-RAISING PARTY NIGHTS
This year’s British Food Fortnight shines a light on the NHS and the hospitals who continue to buy and serve British, local and seasonal food. According to the Hospital Caterers Association in excess of £200m is spent annually on food for patients with British food accounting for roughly 75% of the budget.
“We have an incredible NHS and this year British Food Fortnight wants to pay tribute to all those hard-working hospital caterers who continue to serve the very best British ingredients in healthy meals, day in day out,” says Alexia Robinson, founder of Love British Food and British Food Fortnight. Former Past Chair of the HCA and current PS100 Chair Andy Jones says, “We want to encourage more hospitals to back British and not switch to cheaper imports. While the average budget for food only per patient per day is just £3.45 by using good quality British seasonal ingredients it’s possible to provide healthy and hearty meals for patients within this budget and I can quote many great examples. Chris Neale Head of Catering at Nottingham University Hospital is saving £500k a year by procuring approximately 65% of their food locally, and taking patients meal order 3 hours before the next meal service and distributing to its 90 wards where it is reheated using Burlodge ovens . it is important that patients of NUH know the provenance of the ingredients used in their meals and we promote this at every opportunity.
I know I can find local halls to hire for a couple of hours on Friday nights – so all I need now is for you to contact me and we can get a dialogue going on how to best go about making this happen! Everything these days seems to be driven by red tape; and however wellintentioned you are, it seems almost impossible to get out there and just ‘do stuff ’ – this is my attempt to do that. My contact details are sue@plays-r-ussell.com, Tel: 07947 410394 – if you want to check out my Zumba credentials, I’m a fully registered member of Zumba.com (have been for 8 years) and you can also visit my website www.zumba-around-winchester.com which has many pics of previous fund-raising ‘soirees’. Emma Brookes , NHS Improvement said: “When patients are recovering from poor health, it’s really important that hospitals secure the best catering and supply contracts to ensure their nutritional and hydration requirements can be met. This can include offering seasonal produce and cooking food fresh on the premises. Not only will patients and staff benefit from this but it can also save hospitals money, which can then be reinvested back into frontline services.” www.england.nhs.uk/nhs70/
In addition to the Zumba classes that I currently run 5 days a week I would like to reach out to the wider community offering my skills as a Zumba Instructor, to raise money for good causes, using my Friday nights to provide fun and dancing – all proceeds going to charity. For the last few years I have done fund-raising for Children in Need and, whilst happy to do that again this year, I would like to reach out to other charities, however big or small (i.e. not just charitable organisations - I am happy to help individuals and small groups e.g. small-scale projects for schools) on a more regular basis – maybe a couple of times a month.

RARE FINDS IN WINCHESTER!
A
fter the success of last year, The Rare Brand Market returns to Winchester’s Guildhall on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th November, and for the eighth year to Goodwood Racecourse on Thursday 22nd – Saturday 24th November.
Admission price is £10 or, with a friend, present this advertisement on the door and take advantage of the 2 for 1 offer. The Rare Brand Market likes to give back so is thrilled to announce that it is working with two regional charities which will share a proportion of ticket revenue.
So, what is rare? Wikipedia describes it as “not widely known and valued for their uncommonness”. The Rare Brand Market curates a wide range of rare brands across clothing, food, drink, jewellery, beauty, toys and gadgets, lifestyle and homeware. A brand may have great awareness in London but be considered rare elsewhere; other times, it’s a young, local brand giving you the opportunity to find unique gifts. The Rare Brand Market focuses on emerging brands, likely to have been created in the last 1 to 3 years. Come and meet the founders and hear firsthand the passion for their work!
Marian Parfitt, Breast Cancer Haven Macmillan manager said, “We look forward to working in partnership with The Rare Brand Market to not only raise vital funds but also awareness with their retailers and customers as many may know someone who has been affected by the disease. From its UK centres, this charity offers free emotional support; help with symptom control and practical advice to anyone affected by breast cancer”.
This pop-up Christmas market, now the largest on the South coast, will be open on Wednesday for extended hours. The fun is back in shopping. Come out of the cold and shop comfortably inside the magnificent Guildhall, in the heart of Winchester. Why not fix a date with friends and after shopping at The Rare Brand Market enjoy dining at one of the many restaurants in the beautiful city of Winchester. Refreshments are also available on site at the Guildhall’s Café Eighteen71.
Actors, parents and founders of The Murray Parish Trust, Sarah Parish and James Murray said "Giving back is a really important part of The Rare Brand Market's ethos, and our partnership will bring us closer still to achieving our own goal of funding a state of the art new Children’s Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton, serving much of the South of England". www.therarebrandmarket.co.uk

A TH RE AD TO TH E PAST Alresford has been famous for its Sheep Fairs since the Middle Ages, the animals being herded from all around Hampshire and Wiltshire through drove lanes. Until the late 1800’s the sheep were penned in what is now known as Broad Street. Long Barn stands upon the site where subsequent Sheep Fairs were conducted, hence our address,‘The Old Sheep Fair’. Our lavender now grows where once as many as 16,000 sheep were huddled. We have partnered with master weavers McNutts of Donegal to create a range of woolen throws that celebrate our thread to the past, now available in store and online www.longbarn.co.uk

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW DIRECTION?
Peter Symonds Adult & Higher Education Division offers a wide range of courses varying from language and leisure classes to industry-recognised professional qualifications and university degrees in a variety of subjects. Approximately 250 students choose to attend higher education courses at PSC AHED every year. They are attracted by our pioneering approach to learning, where students study for a degree one day a week whilst continuing in employment. With fees rising at mainstream universities, this proves both professionally enriching and cost effective. The high quality of teaching offered at AHED consistently exceeds rigorous national quality requirements, and was recognised this year with a Silver TEF Award from the government’s Office for Students. Peter Symonds AHED is proud of our outstanding academic results that are comparable to those achieved by the country’s top universities. In 2018, students graduating from Higher Education courses at PSC AHED achieved excellent grades, with 40% receiving first class honours degrees and a further 36% receiving 2:1s. Staff and students work in partnership to ensure each individual fulfils their potential, with excellent results. Equally popular is our Access to Higher Education programme, which provides an alternative route to university for adult learners. This is ideal for those wishing to progress to study at university without traditional entry requirements as well as those who want to make a career change. Learners can study full-time or part-time on diplomas including: Allied Health Professionals, Health & Social Care Professional, Humanities, Nursing & Midwifery, Primary Teaching and Sciences. In the past academic year all Access students who decided to progress were offered university places, four of which were accepted directly onto Masters programmes. Come along to one of our Open Events or visit our website www.psc.ac.uk/ahed to discover the right course for you!

THE FORUM TALKS WITH JAMES MARTIN
FEATURE
James Martin needs no introduction. As restaurateur, celebrity chef, author of seventeen books and host of at least eighteen television travel and cookery programs, he is one the nation’s favourite personalities.
H
e lives in both Yorkshire and Hampshire, and now runs The Kitchen, a restaurant and cookery school at the prestigious Chewton Glen Hotel in the New Forest.
“I came to Hampshire twenty-three years ago; I love the coastline, and especially Beaulieu and the Isle of Wight.”
master and that’s what makes you strive to be better. For example, last night’s service in the restaurant, (Chewton Glen), was fantastic, really busy. All the customers were happy, so the front of house and back staff were happy too. When it all goes well you can’t believe you’re lucky enough to be doing this job.” When choosing ingredients for the restaurant does James support local producers? “Yes, of course, where possible. But we are cooking for large numbers of people all the time – it was one hundred people last night, so if I need two hundred halibut then I go where I can source best quality product.” Does James despair of our dietary excesses of processed foods? “No, not really. Look at the difference in the food culture compared to thirty years ago. People have so much choice now and it’s up to them to make their decisions.”
From his native Yorkshire, James left Scarborough Technical College and went directly to Hostellerie de Plaisance in France, one of the many Michelinstarred restaurants James has worked in. Was that move a real culture shock? “No, not really. I had been going to France on holiday with my parents for years. Even at the age of ten I was in the French kitchens helping out. I wanted to cook so badly! I left school with one ‘O’ Level in art, but it didn’t matter - cooking was my passion.” That passion served James well. On his return to the UK, he joined Gerard Basset and Robin Hutson, founders of Winchester’s Hotel du Vin, as Head Chef. He was just twenty-two. Can James recollect the most memorable meal he has eaten? “I think The Waterside Inn at Bray. It has Michelin three-star status and is better than anywhere. It’s excellent in both front and back of house.” I asked James for whom he’d like to cook if he had the choice. Despite the fact he must have a wide range of celebrity customers, his choice was heart-felt. “My late grandmother. She was a fantastic cook and passed all her knowledge on to my mother. Sunday lunch was always for ten or twelve people with everything home cooked, the most fantastic and memorable meals. You can’t beat a good roast! My grandmother was also a huge fan of ‘Strictly Come Dancing,’ so she would have loved to see me on that!” Does James enjoy the pressure of cooking live on television? “I love the pressure, it’s no different to working in a professional kitchen. Cooking is a craft you can never
James is well known for his love of cars. Would he describe himself as a ‘petrol-head chef ’? He laughs, “ Yes quite possibly! I learnt to fly at Goodwood in West Sussex and still remember my old Mini! We may well do some more travel food programs when I drive around in a nice car. We’ll see!” So what next for James Martin? “God knows!! I’d be lost without my mother, my phone and my PA, that’s for sure! But listen, I feel very privileged to do my job, I’m so lucky. If I can inspire youngsters to cook then that makes me happy.” James is preparing a meal as we chat, so what’s for supper? “Roast pork-like I say you can’t beat a good roast!” GG

WINCHESTER CITY COUNCILLORS REPORT -MARGOT POWER £6 MILLION OF COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY HAS NOT BEEN SPENT YET This is from Developer contributions on new housing. The theory was that all local government would received a share of this and be able to deliver improvements. That was found to be ineffective, little has been spent, some has been allocated, for example £250,00 towards the cost of the new Car Park in Alresford. Proposals are now coming forward to allow local parishes to propose projects to be bought forward. Given that these houses have now been built, and residents moved in, we are pressing that more of this money should be spent on local schemes. A good example would eb improvements to West Street in Alresford, approved and costed by Hampshire County Council at £88,000 many years ago, but neve progressed. PEDESTRIANS FIRST Hampshire did trial 20mph speed limits in some villages, but found that overall speeds did not reduce. It made me slow down, but what was your experience? ALRESFORD TOWN COUNCIL PARKING AT ARLEBURY PARK New Alresford Town Council would like to remind both residents and visitors to the town, that two hours free parking is available at the Arlebury Recreation Centre, at The Avenue, SO24 9EP. The car park is a short walk from the wide range of shops and inviting restaurants in the town and charges are very reasonable for a longer stay. Walkers can access the nearby recreation ground or enjoy the Alresford Watercress Trail, a fivemile riverside walk, rewarding themselves with refreshments at
intimidation from fast and/or large vehicles, insufficient dropped kerbs, or badly maintained footpaths. Given that the majority of us want to stay healthy – walking is the easiest, cheapest way to keep mobile, improve our environment, and save money for the National Health Service, where should our priorities lie?

BRIGHT-EYED AND BUSHY-TAILED BY CLAIRE THURLOW “The little beast broke in while we were on holiday. Lord knows how long it had been in the house, helping itself to my biscuits. It had even managed to switch on the radio! I opened the living room door and there it was, sitting on the bookshelf munching a digestive!” Fiona shivered as she recalled the nightmare encounter. “In the end we lured it out with a peanut butter sandwich.” The home-invader may only have been a single pint-sized squirrel, but it managed to create a giant mess before it was finally evicted. Luckily, on this occasion, neither squirrel nor humans sustained any injuries, but those rodent teeth can inflict a nasty nip if the animal feels threatened. If you’ve been lucky enough to see a red squirrel, perhaps in Scotland or the Lake District, you’ll have been charmed by its glossy red coat and tufty ears. Personally, I find its larger, tougher grey cousin much less appealing, particularly as the spread of the non-native greys has led to a steep decline in red squirrel populations. Even so, there are times when I must admit that grey squirrels can be entertaining. In the garden, watching a trio of juveniles chasing each other down one tree, across the lawn, then up another tree, I am impressed by the agility of these joyfully tumbling siblings. The pursuit continues along the limbs of an ash, and when those branches turn to little more than twigs, barely able to take the weight of three bouncing rodents, the squirrels launch themselves, one after the other, into the safety of the neighbouring beech.Their high-pitched chatter suggests that this rampage through the tree-tops is purely for fun, some early autumn antics before the serious business of gathering winter stores begins.
But this playfulness can have unwanted consequences. All that tearing helter-skelter around tree trunks, with sudden changes of direction, can mean collisions, or even tails getting entangled. Apparently, it’s not uncommon for two, or three, squirrels to get themselves in a twist. But that’s nothing compared to the recent predicament faced by five young squirrels in Wisconsin. A passer-by heard frantic squeaks from a nest and was horrified to find the quintuplets had managed to get all their tails wound into an impenetrable knot. Not only was their hair enmeshed, but woven among it were long stems of grass and strands of plastic which the mother had brought in as bedding. Like the mythical Gordian Knot, this muddle was not going to be unravelled easily. Animal welfare experts, the Humane Society, stepped in, and were immediately worried about permanent damage to the squirrels’ tails. These are not only vital to keep them warm through a freezing North American winter, but also enable them to balance when clambering through the tree-tops. Swift action was needed. While the vets pondered (and tried not to get their fingers nipped), the youngsters were still struggling to get free, but simply managed to get into even more of a panicky scrum. The solution was general anaesthetic, and with five agitated squirrels safely asleep, the experts got to work. It was a fiddly business knowing which bits to snip and which bits to untangle, and shaming to know that discarded plastic rubbish was yet again causing harm to wildlife. But on this occasion, the animals were in good hands. They were lucky and should make a full recovery after their misadventure.Three of the litter will have rather threadbare tails for a while, but the other two are already “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed”, and no doubt ready for another game.

ALRESFORD TOWN COUNCIL REPORTS needed in any future encampment • has prepared an action plan and is putting together a guidance note • will seek the incorporation of measures to prevent such encampments on any new open spaces created in the town
STRATTON BATES PARK In July last year, Alresford received an unexpected visit from a sizeable group of Irish Travellers. The Town Council was glad that between our efforts and those of Hampshire Police, the encampment on Stratton Bates Park was cleared quickly so the park could be enjoyed by residents and particularly our children during their summer holidays. However, we recognise that we may now be 'on the map' within the Traveller community, so we cannot rule out the possibility of future encampments. This left NATC with a decision to take as to whether we should attempt to put physical barriers in place to defend Stratton Bates against future encampments. The simple answer we came to is that we should not do so for now.We realise this may be controversial with some residents, so we thought it would be helpful to explain how we came to this conclusion. None of our volunteer councillors are experts on the issue of Traveller encampments. So we sought advice from people with the relevant experience, in particular Hampshire County Council's Gypsy Liaison Officer and Hampshire Police. The factors the Council took into account in coming to the decision were: • the encampment in 2017 is the only one we know of at Stratton Bates
• although some disruption was caused, it lasted little over 24 hours • fencing, digging ditches or building bunds would make a big impact on the sense of openness that Stratton Bates enjoys • location of trees makes installing defences difficult • the cost of preventative measures would be very significant and any work would come with no guarantee that it would be effective. The Gypsy Liaison Officer pointed out that ditches are easily filled in and gates broken down • the only correspondence we received from a resident on the issue asked that the park be left as it is • the only financial cost to NATC during the 2017 encampment was to replace a roll of bin bags • defending one site in the town might inadvertently push any future encampment to an obvious alternative site which is of great sensitivity to the town – one which would be much harder to successfully defend • in the words of the Gypsy Liaison Officer any attempt to defend such an open space as Stratton Bates Park would be “overkill” To guard against future encampments, the Town Council: • has allocated funds for legal and bailiff fees should they be
We will continue to monitor the situation and will reconsider the issue if there is any repeat at any of the sites that the Town Council looks after. PAVILION REFURBISHMENT On a more positive note, we hope that some of you will have noticed the refurbishment work that we undertook at the Stratton Bates pavilion. Some of the original features of the building were beginning to look tired, so we hope this is an improvement. We are also in the process of replacing the wooden posts around the car park.
CAR PARKING IN THE TOWN There has been a fair amount of discussion around the issue of parking in the town recently. One way that we can all help those who find it more difficult to walk between their car and the shops is to park further away from the centre of town ourselves if we are able to. Especially if staying for a while. There is very often space in the Arlebury Park car park which is free for the first 2 hours – just don't forget to collect your ticket from the machine! By parking
at Arlebury Park, you will also be easing parking problems for residents in The Dean and helping the turnover of spaces in the town centre. This is good for encouraging the use of our local businesses. AFFORDABLE HOUSING – THE NPPF One concern amongst many in relation to the planning application for the proposed Sun Lane development is that, if the development goes ahead, the affordable homes must actually be built. The Town Council shares this concern. So we have written to Steve Brine MP to encourage him to lobby the Housing Minister in relation to the current revision of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). In particular we have asked that he support the introduction of safeguards in relation to the viability assessments used for affordable housing. The NPPF revision is in its final stages and we anxious that it should close the 'viability loophole' in the current planning regime that allows developers to put profits before the community's need for an adequate supply of affordable housing. We hope that the changes to the NPPF will address this situation and hold developers to account by including standardised viability assessments and greater transparency in their implementation. Copies of both the NPPF letter and the briefing note produced for the Town Council in relation to the Traveller encampment are available from committeeclerk@newalresford-tc. gov.uk New Alresford Town Council Arlebury Park,The Avenue, Alresford, Hampshire, SO24 9EP Tel: 01962 732079 www.newalresfordtc.org.uk

VILLAGE AGENT - PHONE SCAMS, AND HOW TO AVOID THEM As you will know from previous issues, Denise is your local Age Concern Hampshire ‘Village Agent’ volunteer for Alresford. Her role is to help older people in their local community to find information and services on matters such as finding transport for shopping, organised trips, medical appointments and local activities; finding reliable tradespeople to help around the home and garden, and financial matters, including your entitlement to claim benefits. This month Denise heard reports from Hampshire Trading Standards of a number of cases of cold-calling, and telephone scams, including a case where a resident was called on the telephone by a person purporting to
Dominic was hoping for it to be a delightful adventure race in the wilderness but ended up being an exercise in survival. Although Dominic went on to finish the race first (Northbound), he encountered a whole host of issues including, intense temperatures, heat exhaustion, a torn leg muscle, a meeting with a bear, two broken teeth and mechanical problems with his bike, which resulted in having to buy a new bike. Dominic comments: “It really was an adventure of epic proportions and, in the face of adversity, I really learnt a lot about myself. My talk will give local residents the opportunity to hear how I cycled for 20 hours a day and slept rough in order to be first across the line. My torn leg muscle slowed me down and left me in considerable pain, which meant that I was forced to give up my lead, but I didn’t give up the race. “Since completing the ride, I have spent considerable time pondering what kept me going, despite the many problems I experienced. The conclusion I have reached is not that I am blessed with some extreme level of resilience but rather it was the strength of the dream I had, which I had spent two years preparing for.” be from Trading Standards. The caller tried to convince the resident they were investigating a company who installed their solar panels and that the Police were involved. The caller then tried to obtain bank details from the resident. Hampshire Trading Standards has also received several reports of residents being cold-called about blocked drains. Exaggerated claims about the state of the drains may be made, and elaborate stories given as the reason for the call. Offers to clear the drains are made, and sometimes money is demanded up front. So, to protect yourself from Phone Call Fraud: Be wise to cold-call scams. Ignore unsolicited invitations such as letters, emails or phone calls offering a brilliant investment or saying you’ve won a lottery. Contact the Mailing Preference Service on 0845 703 4599 to have your name taken off UK direct mailing lists; speak to your telephone provider about the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) which can help block some unwanted calls, and check that your email account is set up to filter spam. THE VIRGIN BEATER I © 2018 LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND
t’s half past eight on a chilly winter’s morning and, self-conscious in her flowery gardening wellies and borrowed Barbour, she arrives at the pub. Space is at a premium as she shoehorns her mini between a shiny new Range Rover and a filthy ancient Landrover, where they sit together, companionable, eclectic. Shyly poking her head around the door of The Wheatsheaf, she looks for her friend amid the atmosphere within, thick with the sound of hilarity and aromas of coffee and waxed cotton. Wading through a sea of panting spaniels and wagging Labradors to reach the bar, there’s friendly banter and introductions all round for the ‘Virgin Beater’. And a go on the sweepstake. Only two quid and she makes her choice based on insider information from the gamekeeper. The whispered number a mysterious calculation, apparently based on a look around the room and a peek out of the window. Then its into the beaters’ trailer to sit on hay bales, watching the farm go by, but only knowing where she’s been as she looks over the back door. The veterans get comfortable, making a roll-up for the next drive, WAGs gossip and children chatter in their excitement. Even the dogs, terriers mainly and the odd cocker spaniel, have an expectant look about them and, nerves dispelled, she feels a club-like spirit of inclusion into this alien world.
Yomping through the fields, ploughed now, but frosty enough that she’s not carting half of Hampshire around on her boots, as bidden, she waves a flag made from a plastic feed bag and hazel stick. Calling “aye aye” like the others, she walks towards the copse, keeping in line with her neighbours as they drive the birds towards the guns waiting unseen behind the trees. The smaller skittish partridge are the first to take flight and head up and over the bare beech and oak, followed by a volley of shots. Exotic looking pheasants seem the last to fly. Reluctant to lift off, some leave it almost until the beaters tread upon them at the edge of the wood. Maybe they’re the smart ones, she thinks. Not gaining height enough to be considered safe or sporting, they’ll fly another day.
66
The pickers-up are doing their thing; working their dogs, retrieving the shot game. The guns too – many have dogs and the hillside is alive with activity as the birds are gathered, tied in braces and hung from the hooks in the game cart. The trailer bounces over the ruts in the tracks and the birds swing in unison as they’re towed away to the next drive. And so the day goes on. Fresh air and exercise deep in hidden Hampshire’s countryside she’d glimpsed mainly from the road. The sun comes out and jackets are shed. A welcome stop for elevenses; tins and Tupperware full of coffee cake, brownies, egg sandwiches and sausage rolls miraculously appear. Hot chocolate for the kids and a ‘sloegasm’ for the grown-ups – pink, fizzy and delicious – whatever it was… The hours evaporate and the day is suddenly over, as a weary but buoyant party reconvene at the pub. In the dusk, the game cart is the focus of attention, as the bag is discussed and a final count made. With a practiced eye and quick feel of the birds, the old timers choose the plumpest braces to take home with their beater’s packet. The remaining game is loaded into the butcher’s van, the temperature’s dropping and the gathering drifts back into the inn, where the log fire beckons. The talk is all about the day now past; a butterfly drawn out by the sunshine, a young Labrador’s first retrieve, the high pigeon. Steaming bowls of slow cooked game stew, and dumplings fragrant with sage are consumed at the tables, whilst the dogs sleep beneath. Pints and shorts are quaffed, volumes increase and the serious consumers settle in for the evening. The newest beater, replete with warm food and no longer a selfconscious stranger, bids farewell with promises to return. Heading for home she contemplates recipes for the brace of partridge that resides on the passenger’s seat, alongside her earnings. Also, minus the cost of a pint for the gamekeeper, are her winnings from the sweepstake - and she wonders “What price a terrier pup..?”

HOW ONE SOLDIER’S BATTLE BROUGHT PEACE TO MILLIONS
2
018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, and also of the visit of a certain Bill Wilson to Winchester Cathedral. A young artillery officer sent from America to fight in France, Bill survived the war and went on to write one of the world’s best-selling books – the “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous. And on its first page he recounted the story of his wartime visit to the cathedral. Today AA remains untouched by the modern concerns for profit, waiting lists, referrals and data collection. AA meetings are free and readily available, in most cities there’s a meeting every day of the week. No details are kept of those attending – and there are no referrals or waiting lists. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Some people have already stopped when they walk through the door, others are still drinking. As the name implies, it’s anonymous so people can feel safe attending meetings. AA is about living a happy and fulfilling life sober - not just stopping drinking so support is there no matter how long people have been sober. The whole thing, including the free 24 hour helplines, is run with small amounts of money collected at meetings. There’s no charge for admission, even the tea and coffee is free. So how did Winchester in the UK find itself on page one of AA’s “Big Book”? During the final months of World War One Bill Wilson was with a US army unit en route for France and was temporarily quartered in an army camp at Morn Hill outside the city. Not in any way a religious man, he had nevertheless been profoundly moved during his visit to the cathedral when, seated quietly contemplating the future, he had a sense that some benign form of ‘higher power’ was watching over him – and that despite his fears everything would turn out well. Walking through the churchyard afterwards, he saw old gravestone dating form 1764 it commemorated a young grenadier of the Hampshire Militia who had died ‘of a violent fever contracted from drinking small beer when hot… in grateful remembrance of whose universal goodwill towards his Comrades, this stone is placed here at their expence’ explained the inscription. By an odd coincidence the soldier’s name, Thetcher, was similar to that of his great friend back home Ebby Thatcher, and he and Ebby had certainly put away more than a few small beers together… Bill returned to America only to find his life in jeopardy again – this time through his drinking. His successful career disintegrated, and he
was told that he would either have to be permanently locked up or would die as a result of his alcoholism. A meeting with his friend Ebby changed all that, Ebby had found a way to stop drinking with the help of The Oxford Group, a Christian Organisation. Bill was initially discouraged by this – he wanted nothing to do with God. But after trial and error he and another alcoholic, Dr Bob Smith, began to develop a programme which enabled them and other alcoholics to stay sober - no special faith or belief was required, though being opened minded to the concept of a higher power was encouraged. Together they founded what became Alcoholics Anonymous. As AA grew they decided to make a written record of the process, and Bill set to work on a book that would become AA’s handbook - he chose to start with the story of that wartime day in Winchester. We landed in England. I visited Winchester cathedral. Much moved, I wandered outside. My attention was caught by a doggerel on an old tombstone: ‘Here lies a Hampshire Grenadier / Who caught his death / Drinking cold small beer / A good soldier is ne’er forgot / Whether he dieth by musket / Or by pot’. The book became an all-time best-seller. The 25 millionth copy rolled off the presses back in 2005, and around a million are still printed and sold each year, despite the text being available free online in English, Spanish and French. In 2011 Time Magazine placed it on its list of 100 best and most influential books and a year later the Library of Congress designated it as one of the 88 ‘Books That Shaped America’. It’s available in seventy languages and there are very few people in AA who don’t have their own copy. Thomas Thetcher’s gravestone still stands in the churchyard at Winchester, although it’s a copy of the one that Bill Wilson saw on that hot August day in 1918. That stone was becoming weathered, and in 1966 was taken to the Regimental Museum where it can be seen today. People from across the world make the trip to Winchester, visit the grave and reflect on the stories of two young soldiers - Bill Wilson of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Thomas Thetcher, the Hampshire Grenadier. If you would like to know more about AA you can find our website at www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk AA has a twenty four hour helpline on - 0800 9177650 You can email AA at help@aamail.org All AA services are free.

HOME ANIMALS & PETS
ADVICE WHEN GETTING A NEW PET Making the decision to home a new pet is an exciting one but it can also be quite a daunting time if you’ve not had a pet around the house before or for a while. As it is a big commitment it is important to make the right decision for you, your family and your new pet and ensure everyone in the household has been included in the decision-making process. Firstly, consideration should be given to which type of pet would best suit your family, home and lifestyle. Puppies and dogs are known to be social animals that therefore need company and a lot of time dedicated to house training and exercise so would benefit from regular access to outdoor space and live with someone who can spend a lot of time with them. Kittens and cats also require regular contact with their owner and time spent handling/grooming them and encouraging play to satisfy their intrinsic drive to hunt and alleviate frustration. As social animals rabbits actually need more company than they sometimes receive and much more space for exercise and play than one would have first thought. Rabbits and other small furries such as hamsters, gerbils, rats, chinchillas, degus and guinea pigs actually require a large space to live and have more complex husbandry needs than most people realise; the right husbandry can prevent a myriad of problems often seen in these animals at the vets.
potential of medical conditions arising in their latter years (some animals can have a long life-span covering many years). All of these aspects of pet care will have a financial cost which must be considered when choosing to re-home a pet. Buying an insurance policy straight away for your pet will help to pay for the unexpected. More information on buying and keeping a new pet can be found from reputable sources such as The Dog’s Trust, Cats Protection, RSCPA, The Kennel Club or Governing Council of the Cat Fancy, and the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund. Whatever decision is made, it is vital to remember that any pet deserves love and commitment and stability in their home environment, and routine in their day-to-day lives to ensure the best welfare possible and make them feel safe and secure. Secondly, when looking for a new pet consider re-homing from a charity and avoid internet adverts, pet shops and pet centres. Adopting from a charity gives you peace of mind that the animal has been health checked, neutered and vaccinated and gives that pet a second chance at finding a stable home. If choosing to buy a pedigree from a breeder always asks to see the breeder’s credentials and the pedigree certificates of both parents and youngster and ask to see them with its mother and litter mates. Always buy from a reputable breeder.

HOME COMMUNITY
WINCHESTER ALRESFORD RUGBY BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT FOOTBALL CLUB A voluntary organisation offering a service to bereaved individuals in Winchester and the surrounding areas. It is independent, and has no ties with statutory bodies or the churches. Support is normally given through home visits by “Bereavement Visitors” who are carefully selected and must successfully complete a comprehensive training programme. Referrals are made directly by the bereaved person, although this is often on the recommendation of their G.P. The service is confidential, free, and the Visitors are given full support from trained Counsellors. We are planning to run a new Training Course, from January - March 2019, and would be very glad to hear from anyone who might be interested in training for this very worthwhile service.
I would like to start this months entry by saying, on behalf of the ARFC Committee, many many thanks to all those players, members and supporters, who took time out to either help with car parking duties, ran our stall or both at this years Alresford Agricultural Show. A special mention should go out to Paul Rees, who spent most of the day in our bouncy castle obstacle course. One of the most important things we as a club want to achieve is encouraging local little ones to join our thriving club. Ignoring his injuries(a very severe elbow skin burn!!!), Paul looked after and made many childrens day at the show a memorable one and showed all what a local rugby club has to offer to all ages. This will be the first and absolutely last time I mention him this season because his stories will get a little tiresome!

A new business was born and now Susie designs floral themes for events, weddings and parties across the Home Counties and London. Inspired by the warmth, comfort and safety that exudes from Breast Cancer Haven, Wessex, Susie has created a powerful and positive floral display inspired by garlands long-used in Indian culture to symbolise amongst other things ‘love and compassion’. Covering the front of their Titchfield centre, this large-scale display of locally sourced, in-season flowers, mirrors the Breast Cancer Haven brand’s colours. Susie is thrilled to be part of this project due to the personal experience she has had with breast cancer in her family. “Having been the primary carer to my mother during her battle with cancer, I was delighted to lend a hand to this project to raise awareness of the disease, which sadly affects so many of us today, either directly or indirectly, and of the Breast Cancer Haven which supports not only the patient but the family too – so important during difficult times”. https://susiebabingtongardens.co.uk/

The wellknown businesswoman was born in London and has lived in Alresford since 1989. She has been a professional photographer for over 30 years, cutting her teeth as a freelance photographer for the Hampshire Chronicle, Alton Herald and Echo newspapers. new ones, to be confident and courageous, authentic and playful, but most of all, we aim to excite and unleash a love of theatre and performance in all its forms! We will play games and improvise together. Using scripts and texts from ancient Greece to modern day and everything in between, we will explore characters and discover how to stage challenging, comic or tragic scenes. We can even experiment with ideas and techniques to devise thrilling new pieces of performance. And, when we’ve done all that, we can let the audience see… Our director, Hannah Rose, has a wealth of experience in professional theatre and has taught drama and directed plays for young people for many years: “It is really important to me that everyone is seen, that every single member of the company is valued and heard. We need to have fun and play well together to be a strong, trusting team. Then we can create thrilling, innovative performance that we all care about” To book your place, or for more information, contact Hannah on 07766 333273 or at dbtheatrecompany@gmail.com
