COMMUNITY/ PROPERTY River Itchen revisited

PROPERTY CONSULTANTS It is almost a year since I last wrote a piece on river health and recent events mean that it is time to update locals on what is happening. August 2020 marks a significant month in the long history of the River Itchen, one of our most precious chalk streams, designated a special area of conservation under the EU Habitats Directive, but now enshrined in UK law. Firstly the packaging firm Bakkavor announced it is to close its controversial salad washing plant in Alresford, much to the delight of the Salmon & Trout Conservation trust, whose report in June 2019 found that the plant was a major pollutant of the river. Bakkavor washed imported salad leaves on the watercress bed site using an agricultural extraction licence, valid for indigenous watercress washing but not for industrial scale rinsing of crops imported from overseas. As one recent Hampshire Chronicle contributor put it: ‘bringing vast amounts of imported perishable salad crops from all over Europe to be then washed in the headwaters of a world famous chalk river does not make economic sense and is certainly not environmentally sustainable.’ While the question of incorrect operating licence went unresolved, the Environment Agency (EA) was provoked by the fishing lobby to ask Bakkavor to cut the discharge of harmful pesticides. It now appears that attempts to comply with this were not economically viable for Bakkavor, given the decision to close. The second reason August was so important to the River Itchen, is that in mid- August the head of the EA announced that he would seek to adjust the way river health in England is measured once we leave the EU in 2021. This could threaten the way river health is policed from next year.

Tel: 01420 561507 email: gakwilliamson@aol.com He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed 1 Peter 2:24

Currently under the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) only only 14% of English rivers merit the status ‘good’, as there are four stringent criteria. The Environment Agency feels this is unfair as many more rivers should qualify if the health criteria were consolidated into one that would raise our 14% to 79%. Critics claim that the EA is trying to “rig the system” to cover up decades of failure as an enforcement agency, but a more generous river ranking system would mean less rigorous policing of river health than currently executed by the over-stretched EA. Consequently both discharge into and abstraction from chalk streams is more likely in the future than under the WFD. Our chalk streams still need an effective champion to protect their fragile ecosystems from commercial exploitation. Garry Honey

Leaves & Lawns This year is challenging for lawns. We suffered a wet and cold spring which was soon followed by many weeks of high temperatures and drought. Lawns died back and I am now seeing many that have still not recovered. If growth has not returned by now then your lawn will need some work to restore it. The great news is that it’s far cheaper to renovate a lawn than it is to re-turf one. Autumn is a great time to renovate your lawn. We have the necessary knowledge, skills, equipment and experience to turn even the most unattractive patch of grass back to a beautiful green, lush lawn again. Leaves and Lawns

Those wonderful autumn colours soon become a lawn nuisance. Let’s take a look at leaves. As the summer fades so do the leaves on deciduous trees – that’s the ones that aren’t evergreens and lose their leaves every autumn. The tree begins to extract anything of use from the leaves and the toxins that are left behind provide the spectrum of autumn colours we all know and love. However, whilst they look wonderful on the tree and are great in a woodland, leaving them on your lawn for any period of time can cause some major issues. In their natural environment, that’s woodland, the leaves that fall at the base of the tree play an essential part in the circle of life. These leaves, once wet, begin to break down. They act as an essential food source for the fungi that call the woodland their home. Fungi are great at breaking down leaves and in turn they hold a mutually beneficial relationship with the tree roots, helping them to access essential micro-nutrients.

It’s a bug’s life So why isn’t there a mass of leaves built up over the years of autumn fall? The leaves at the base of the tree don’t stay on the surface for long. They are shredded by insects. Some are dragged into the soil by worms. Once there they are broken down further, encouraging bacterial activity and contributing essentially to the health of the soil. Don’t leave the leaves

We do our best to remind our lawn care customers of the importance of not letting leaves lay on the lawn. We know it seems like a never-ending task, but during the leaf-fall season it really is important to get out there and get them off the lawn. Ideally you should be doing this every week. But why is this so important? Green leaf plants need sunlight to survive. Once that light is blocked out, they will soon begin to suffer. They use this light to create food, without it they starve to death. In addition, a build up of leaves on the grass soon begins to prevent air circulation. If air can’t reach the surface of the soil

8

then there will be a lack of oxygen in the soil and that means that all those beneficial insects, essential for healthy soil, will begin to die. When their population is decreased so is the health of the soil. Soil biology and air There are many different bacteria within your lawn soil. The good guys are essential for soil health. They help protect and feed your grass plants. Without them the lawn will never be green and healthy. Then there’s the bacteria baddies. Trying to attack the plants and cause them harm. The important thing to remember is that good bacteria reproduce in an aerobic environment – one with lots of oxygen. Bad bacteria like an anaerobic soil, without air. So, reducing the amount of air able to get into your lawn soil means that the bad guys are going to beat the good guys. And that’s super bad for your lawn. Fungi

What conditions do fungi like to live in? Damp and dark conditions I hear you shout. In autumn when then leaves fall, rain is rarely far away. Once those fallen leaves and the grass leaf and the rain all get together for a party on your lawn the conditions are perfect for the fungi to join in too. What I’m really trying to say is that wet leaves left on your lawn create the ideal conditions for your lawn to be attacked by damaging lawn diseases.

Moss loves bare earth Moss loves the autumn. Damp days, low light levels, none of that nasty hot sunshine to dry it out. When moss spores settle on bare soil it quickly establishes and begins to compete with your lawn grass plants. So, by allowing leaves on your lawn to cause areas of grass to become weak or maybe die back altogether you are creating the ideal growing environment for moss. We don’t want mossy lawns because its just creating more work in the spring. Now here’s the great news. Leaf compost is brilliant for your beds and borders and it’s really easy to make. Rake the leaves into some black bags. If they are not already wet then add a splash of water. Throw in a trowel full of soil from your garden and tie up the bag. Punch a few holes in it to let air in and find somewhere out of sight to store them. By the following autumn the leaves will have been broken down, they can be added to the top of your beds and borders as a mulch and you can repeat the process all over again. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Looking to improve your lawn? Please get in touch. We are local, independent and provide great results. riving into town, she thought “Have I got a clean mask?” The things we say now… And Coronavirus also meant hand sanitizer in her hand bag, the car, the kitchen, the bathroom. Not to mention at the bank, the garden centre, the car boot sales. Hand sanitizer everywhere. Should have bought shares in the companies who manufacture the stuff – damn. Now, in the lobby of her hairdresser she encountered sanitizer, a man in a mask and an electronic thermometer. The Covid trinity. She’d known her hairdresser for a long time, so she was fairly certain those were his eyes above his mask. And, fairly certain he was smiling, she smiled back from behind her own mask and sat down in front of the mirror. Both pairs of eyes looked at the long, long roots of her hair. During lockdown, watching her roots grow and the grey grow with it had been sobering. Older than she thought. And fantasising about a hair appointment had replaced the one about moving to Byron Bay and buying a house next to the Hemsworths. But finally she was seated in the time machine chair, ready to turn the clock back on her hair. Goody! Rather helpfully, she felt, she’d sent advance pictures to her hairdresser. Pictures of a celeb sporting long dark roots with artfully streaked blonde ends. The effect was called Ombre. Or was it Balayage? She wasn’t sure and didn’t really care. Himself had liked the hair in the picture, but the person wearing the hair – not so much. So having carefully explained that she wanted to look the same, but different, her long suffering hairdresser began to work his magic. Conversation was a little slow, though. No-one had been on holiday. Or got married. Or done anything much, seen

10

anyone much. She didn’t personally know someone who had caught ‘it’ and neither did he – but maybe they both had caught it and didn’t know? Having exhausted the available topics, they fell silent. Her head swiftly became the repository of little foil parcels, so neat, oblong and flat. Like old fashioned sticks of chewing gum. But now the man behind the mask was unwrapping some of them and shaking his head. Hard to see his expression, she was now fairly certain he’d stopped smiling. This did not augur well. “What have you been using on your hair?” Somewhat taken aback, she hesitated for a nano-second. “Um… shampoo?” There had been lots of things that were hard to get during lockdown; toilet paper, obviously, because Covid-19 gave you the trots...not. Tinned tomatoes and pasta – seemingly everyone was making spag bol. And, naturally, anything slash everything required for bread making. A veritable stampede to denude the shelves of yeast and strong wheat flour. Because give the Brits a crisis - snow, storm or global pandemic – and they bake bread. Therapeutic. But no shortages of shampoo. She’d been able to get her hands on all types of shampoo. The wrong types of shampoo, it transpired. Because the wrong types can coat your hair in a way that stops both bleach and colour having any effect. Who knew? It was a shame that the wrong type of shampoo didn’t stop the grey from growing out of your scalp too – but sadly not. Rinsed off, she was given ‘special’ shampoo to take home, told to use it and come back the next day. She thought vaguely of the children, not sure why. Still scratching, she arrived home and ducked under the washing line with its pegged array of masks, washed and dancing in the breeze. “That was quick. Hair looks lovely.” Himself looked up from his paper as she opened the back door. Should she tell him? Or wait until she’d actually had her hair done and see if he noticed? She plumped for the latter. He went on “now you’re back, could you give me a trim please darling?” So she did. Had been doing so regularly since lockdown. With multi-purpose kitchen scissors and dog clippers bought for 50p at a car boot. All that clipping and snipping, much like the kneading and baking, was very therapeutic and she wondered whether she’d missed her vocation as a barber. Short back and sides, Sir? Mmnn possibly. Definitely not a vocational baker, though – her bread had an unusual masonry-like quality not often found in a foodstuff. And maybe not suited to be a proper hairdresser either, if she were honest. It was the clients. With their photos of celebrity hair-dos, their nebulous demands and their wrong types of shampoos, she wasn’t sure she could cope with the clients…

COMMUNITY Alresford Neighbourhood Watch Moving Forward Circulation of local Crime Reports stopped in May when the Coronavirus pandemic meant volunteers were not allowed into Police Stations to extract the data. Reports are now coming through again and a project to train more volunteers across the two counties is progressing. Our own Chairman is now trained and will be assisting in this. Please get in touch if you wish to receive the local reports. Our contact details are below for anyone who wishes to get in touch with us concerning the AGM or for any other reason.

AGM

We are obliged by our constitution to hold an Annual General Meeting, but it is clearly inappropriate at this time to hold it in its normal format. We are considering alternatives and will be contacting everyone who has signed up to receive emails from us in the near future.

Co-ordinators

We have a number of vacancies for Co-ordinators and will be following up a number of leads we have to fill these positions.

Incident Reporting

Please do report incidents to the Police either suspicious or actual. The online Reports service works well and you will get an acknowledgement, even if no officer attends.

Hants Snap

This is a Police initiative aimed at dealing with traffic offences caught on camera. Hampshire Police are accepting personal video evidence submissions from members of the public who have witnessed alleged road traffic offences. A trained decision maker will assess the footage and determine if any offences have been committed. Where action is proportionate and there is sufficient evidence to successfully prosecute the case at Court, the incident will most likely be dealt with via the fixed penalty system. The scheme has been through a near year-long pilot August 5 2019 to June 30 2020, during which we focused on incidents which placed the most vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, at risk. During the pilot, we received 261 submissions, with formal action being taken in 29 per cent of these. Of the submissions, five resulted in full criminal investigation. This also led to: • 26 per cent of submissions involving cyclists leading to formal action • 46 per cent of incidents involving pedestrians leading to formal action Since the start of July, we have also received a further 216 submissions, with formal action in just under half of these so far (46 per cent). Now the scheme is being opened up to cover all road users and offences for which people can submit footage. Footage of dangerous incidents can be submitted via an online portal. This can be from a dash cam, head cam or other recording device that is being legally used.

12

The footage must meet the criteria below: • It must be reported within seven days • Should not be edited • Should not have been deleted from your device • Should not be shared on social media • Needs to show between one to two minutes either side of the incident Road Safety Sergeant Scott Kerr said - “We are asking drivers who commit offences – is it worth the risk? We don’t think so and our aim is to spread the message and educate as many people as possible to help improve the safety of our roads across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.” Footage can be submitted by going to https://hants-snappolice.egressforms.com or via the Force website. Lions Message in a Bottle If you needed emergency help from paramedics, how would they quickly find out about your health condition, allergies or any medication you take? When time is saved, lives are saved. The Message in a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location – the fridge. When the emergency services see the special sticker by your front door they will know to look in your fridge for a green and white bottle which will contain your essential information and any repeat prescriptions. Another sticker goes on the outside of your fridge to make it clear where to look. The Message in a Bottle scheme is sponsored by the Lions Club International and is free to users. You can get a bottle from your local health centre, GP surgery or chemist. Alternatively, your Village Agent will be able to provide one. Village Agents are volunteers supported by Age Concern Hampshire, who help people to find information and services in their local community.

Bakkavor - what might become of this site? We are all aware now that Bakkavor seems to be on the move in October, leaving Alresford after years of concerns about river pollution and vast refrigerated lorries lumbering through the town centre. They delivered salad stuff to the washing factory, which discharged into the Arle beside Alresford Pond.

Curtis Museum Hooray! The Museum is open again, although with slightly different days/hours (10-4 Thurs Fri Sat - the hour after closing being set aside for cleaning/disinfection). A design maker by background, Helen Perry has always been interested in materials, surfaces, science and form. Her work transcends several disciplines from drawing and printmaking to ceramics and glass. In this recent body of work Helen has been observing and responding to life under the microscope and the visual structures of materials. Thematically her work has always had an aspect of scientific observation and the hidden beauty of the mundane. The work is very much process driven and manifests itself in a collection of made objects and artworks that collate two years of observation and making. 24th September to 24th October FREE *** Please wear a face-covering when visiting, and use the hand sanitiser we have installed. We hope that jobs for those facing losses can be found and pleased that The Watercress Company has struck a replacement business deal for its produce with a salad processing plant in Chichester, situated on a proper industrial site rather than in the countryside. But the next big question for the town and its environs is ‘What next?’ Sale of the site in Bighton Lane is going to exercise the minds of local residents (and visitors) who hugely value this lovely chalk stream and the wildlife it should support but which has sadly declined over many years. So what options might there be? Buying the site as a ‘going concern’ may be unlikely in the face of local opposition and the Environment Agency has, at last, acted to declare the chemicals in the discharge are unacceptable. The Local Plan is also highly restrictive in terms of development in the countryside (even, we hope, on existing commercial sites established many years ago). We can be sure, though, that acquisitive commercial agents could be interested – not necessarily because of the river location, of course – but for entirely other purposes. A loose ‘cross-party’ group (not in any political sense, of course) is very concerned to keep an eye on possible re-development of the site with certain definite criteria in mind: no more damage to the water courses, of course, and nothing that simply exchanges refrigerated mega-lorries for some other form of frequent HGV or similar traffic. Perhaps, though, there are opportunities for some sort of small scale visitor/education centre to celebrate the chalk streams around here? This could supplement the work of the new Hampshire & Isle of Wight ‘Watercress & Winterbournes’ project, that includes improving the eroding river pathways along the Arle, with opportunities to learn about chalk streams, their ecosystems and how they can be protected, and about our local heritage, showing how the town developed alongside the Arle. We will be exploring ideas further, so will stay in touch. Jan Field - Chairman The Alresford Society, Friends of the Arle and Others

The NGS has carried out a survey on Gardens and Coronavirus 2020. Over 2,400 people responded to the survey and the findings were pretty conclusive that gardens and outdoor spaces are vital to peoples mental and physical wellbeing. The whole report can be viewed on the website - ngs.org.uk. All our garden owners and visitors are well aware of this. There is much work going on behind the scenes at the moment with Garden Owners committing to opening for 2021, and completing the registration documents ready to be collated into the County Booklets. Hampshire are planning a new slimmer more economical booklet for 2021, so watch this space. It may seem a bit early to be planning 2021 gardens, but with over 3,000 gardens opening nationwide there is a lot of work to be done by a very few people at Head Office. They will be working at full capacity for the next couple of months. This will probably be my last communication with you for a while, so I wish you all the best for the rest of 2020 and hope for a more settled and healthy 2021.

The Avenue - Alresford

Charity Christmas cards on the move

The Trustee responsible for The Avenue is Ernie Jeffs who together with his committee decided that the Avenue would be maintained to a high standard in 2020 despite the problems arising through Covid -19. • • • •

The grass is being cut through the period April-September resulting in around 10 cuts per year by Peter Bridges. Trees are surveyed every 4 year and work undertaken annually. Leaves and loose branches collections are organised by The Alresford Society and supplemented by Lawnman. Total annual costs are £8000 per annum.

The Town Council have recognised this work and have granted the Trust £1000 received this month. Other income from advertising boards and from the Friends of the Avenue amount to £3000 thus making a total income of £4000 for the current year 2020 - to half the costs. Ernie encourages residents and businesses to become friends of the Avenue @£25 per annum or to to make one off donations to New Alresford Town Trust -Bank details sort code 20-97-01 account 70621544 or by cheque to

National Garden Scheme - Hampshire

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into Winchester Guildhall, the traditional Charity Christmas Card shop has relocated. The Tourist Information Centre was deemed too small to house all those cards as well as the TIC staff in these times of social distancing. The former Whittards shop, just down the High Street from W.H.Smith, is the new all-singing, all-dancing Christmas Card destination. Opening on Monday 19 October, the shop will house a wide range of local and national charity cards to suit all tastes. An example of a local card in aid of the Southampton Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is shown here. Most of the cards in aid of national charities will be supplied by Cards for Good Causes. The shop is also looking for volunteers to help man the unit; a lot of people will be needed to staff it every day from now until Christmas. If you think you could assist, please contact me, Cathy Wallis, on winchesterCFGC@gmail.com. Season’s Greetings everyone!

Traditional Thai Cuisine Comes to Alresford SHAH’S

AROY THAI

Authentic Thai Cusine can now be enjoyed in Alresford in our newly refurbished restaurant or by our takeaway service My name is Shah Abdul, born and bread in the city of Winchester, I have lived there all my life, studied locally from school, college and completing my degree at the University of Winchester in Media and Business management. From a very young age I had already envisioned my destiny, I wanted to run my own business. I have been brought up on Asian food from birth, my love of spices and herbs and international cuisines giving me my vision to open Aroy Thai. I love the a balance of sweet, salty, and sour, and less often bitter, that makes Thai food unique. In my career I have been involved in the management of several restaurants in Winchester and Hampshire, through my experiences in business and life and I found I love being a restauranteur. I am completely obsessed with Thai food, and now I have the opportunity with the help of my expert chefs to share my knowledge and passion with the community of Alresford. Our ingredeints are world class and our exceptionally experienced chefs cook the finest authentic Thai cuisine. I like having a bit of fun when dining out, so we have a great choice of music and drinks. Everyone is welcome, we pride ourselves on our hospitality and service.

I have already fallen in love with the beautiful market town of Alresford and have noticed that the town is becoming a haven for foodies with fantastic restaurants like Pulpo Negro and brilliant gastro-pubs. It’s a real pleasure to be here and add to the mix. We have had so much support from community and really look forward to contributing to this wonderful community. Our menu has all the Thai Classic dishes like the delightfully sour spiced Tom Yum Soup, Gaeng Keow Wan (Green Curry) and Pad Thai (Thai Style Fried Noodles) all using the finest and freshest ingredients. For those wanting to enjoy our delicious cuisine at home we offer a NEW takeout service available during the restaurant opening hours. The restaurant is located on Broad Street in Alresford. We are open 6 days a week (Tue - Sun) from 12 noon to 2pm for lunch and 6pm to 10.30pm for dinner. If you would like to reserve a table with us you call email: info@aroythai.co.uk or call 01962 656390. We hope to see you soon Shah Abdul

WELLBEING / COMMUNITY Harley Street Treatments in Hampshire. Discover How to Transform Your Skin Today.

Nikki Butler is delighted to announce the opening of her skin clinic in Alton. Nikki is an experienced Medical Tattooist and Skin Specialist and is passionate about her work. Nikki said, “I am delighted to offer treatments that are more commonly

associated with Harley Street. To be able to transform someone’s skin and watch their confidence soar is a real honour”.

This is the reason that Nikki specialises in advanced skin treatments for her clients. Her passion started through treating breast cancer patients; she realised the huge difference that scar improvement made to her client’s confidence. Nikki went on to specialise in the treatment of scars, burns and common skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne scarring and skin rejuvenation. Nikki continued, “I am fascinated by skin, it’s a constant reminder of how amazing the

Alresford & District Voluntary Care Group - We need your help!

human body is at healing, regenerating and protecting us”. Nikki’s work with breast cancer patients remains close to her heart, as this was the reason she retrained as a Medical Tattooist several years ago. As well as carrying out regular areola tattooing procedures, she also offers scalp micropigmentation to disguise hair loss, which has been extremely popular. She is also a Regional Coordinator for Look Good Feel Better cancer charity, running workshops for women that are going through cancer treatment. You can expect to receive a warm welcome from Nikki when you visit her clinic. She is passionate about ensuring you have the best possible experience, as well as getting amazing results from your treatments. With a background in nutritional therapy, Nikki’s unique approach means that she will provide you with invaluable advice on all area’s that affect your skin, ensuring you get the best possible results. Book a consultation with Nikki, to find out how she can transform your skin and help you look and feel amazing. You can call her on 07733 718613 or visit www.nikkibutler. co.uk to book online.

there is an increasing demand for transport to evening and weekend appointments. Volunteer drivers use their own cars, transporting people from their homes to their appointments, and where necessary, helping them to the appropriate department at the hospital or surgery. Drivers are checked under the DBS online system, and receive a hospital parking permit and a payment to cover their fuel costs, plus, of course, the satisfaction of knowing that they are providing a valuable community service and helping people less able than themselves; the passengers themselves make a donation towards the cost of fuel. The ADVCG operates a ‘pool’ of drivers that can be asked to provide transport by one of the nine telephone co-ordinators; these are the volunteers that people speak to when they need to arrange transport to the surgery or hospital. With the reduction in home visits by GPs, and the cutting back of hospital transport services, the number of requested journeys has grown steadily over the last few years.

Alresford & District Voluntary Care Group (ADVCG) was set up some 45 years ago to help local people get to their hospital, GP, dental and optical appointments, in particular for those who are elderly, infirm or just not able to drive. The group provides a valuable service to the local community currently carrying out almost 1000 journeys each year over half of which are to the Alresford Surgery, with most of the remainder to the hospitals in Winchester, Southampton and Basingstoke. Most appointments are scheduled between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday although

24

Consequently, we are looking to RECRUIT NEW DRIVERS! The current Covid-19 restrictions have and will continue to prevent many of our older drivers from carrying out journeys - thus, our pool of drivers has decreased as demand has increased. So if you have a couple of hours to spare each month, or are maybe working from home on flexible hours, and would like to help your community in this much needed and very worthwhile way, please contact us on 01962 736016 or 734408, or email alresfordvolcare@gmail.com to find out more.

COMMUNITY / RETAIL Alresford FunFair to be cancelled - Letter from Winchester City Council

Dear Mr Searle Thank you for providing your Covid-19 risk assessment. I was in the middle of reviewing your risk assessment when we received correspondence from our public health colleagues at Hampshire County Council specifically about funfairs. You may or may not know that they have the ultimate say as to whether an event can go ahead because they have powers to stop ones that they think pose a high risk during the pandemic. As you will have noted from the Government broadcasts at the beginning of the week, the spread of the Covid-19 virus appears to be again on the increase and the direction of travel is generally not favourable towards events right now. The advice of our colleagues at Hampshire County Council Public Health is that all funfairs

in Hampshire should cease operating and that funfairs due to commence operation should not go ahead. This is because (this is lifted directly from their correspondence with us): 1. The incidence of Covid19 in the community has continued to increase Nationally and in Hampshire. 2. The Chief Medical Officer announced that the National Alert Level has been raised to Level 4, which means that transmission of Covid19 in the community is "high or rising exponentially: enforced social distancing". 3. H M Government has issued, and continues to issue, new guidelines on social gatherings with the objective of reducing exposure and onward spread of infection. This includes the ‘rule of 6’, which cannot be practically enforced at a fun-fair. 4. Given that a family unit (persons, both young and old) will attend such settings this adds a further dimension to the opportunity and consequence of onward infection. The decision has been taken in order to control onward infection to those in (and beyond) Hampshire. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news and recognise that this will come as a huge disappointment to you, but the County’s advice is that funfairs should not be operating right now because the risk of transmission is too great. The City Council can not therefore support your event. I hope that you understand the position and wish you well for the future.

As the South Downs National Park prepares to put on its annual dazzling display, people are being encouraged to capture the enchanting beauty of autumn as the deadline looms for this year’s Photography Competition. The contest launched in June and, with the clock counting down to the deadline of 23 October, the changing of the seasons is a great time to explore the National Park with a camera. The contest is offering a first prize of £250 to the amateur or professional photographer who best captures this year’s theme of ‘My tranquil haven’. The top prize for the adult category will be £250, with a runner-up prize of £150 and third prize of £50. There will also be a wildlife sub-category, with judges looking for images capturing the amazing wildlife of the South Downs and the winner in the adult

30

category will receive £100. Meanwhile, there will be two further categories for budding young photographers – 10 years and under and 11 to 17. There will be a winner for the main theme of ‘My Tranquil Haven’, as well as best wildlife image, and the winner of each of these categories will receive a Colombia outdoors rucksack and a Colombia beanie. Award-winning photographers Rachael Talibart and Finn Hopson are returning once again to judge the 2020 competition and the panel welcomes acclaimed Lewes-based photographer Carlotta Luke. Carlotta said: “I am so pleased to be part of the judging panel this year. I love the South Downs and am looking forward to seeing photos that celebrate the feeling of tranquility our national park can give us. As well as beautiful photos of the landscape and wildlife, I would love submissions showing people engaging with and enjoying the park. I also cannot wait to see what the young photographers send in!” Find out more and download the entry form at www.southdowns. gov.uk/enter-the-south-downs-photo-competition/

Caring for Hedgehogs this Autumn

W

hat is an Autumn juvenile? Autumn juvenile hedgehogs are ones that are old enough to be away from their mothers but too small to hibernate. The autumn juvenile season can start as early as September and is busy through until the end of November. However, some will struggle on and the occasional one can be found from December through until April. [The season will vary slightly depending whether you live in the south or north and depending on the weather]. The ones found in March and April may have struggled through the winter or they may have hibernated but at the minimum weight for hibernation so they are weak when they emerge. Young hedgehogs can and will hibernate at 450gms (1lb) or less but are more likely to survive hibernation at 600gms (22oz) and will be in better condition post hibernation. Hedgehogs that can probably be left in the wild If the hedgehog is a regular visitor to your garden, is only seen at night, appears active and you are prepared to feed it every night then it can be left in the wild. See notes on feeding and feeding stations. However if the hedgehog goes off its food, wobbles and staggers or starts coming out in the day or you notice it has green slimy poo especially if there is blood in it, then it needs extra help as soon as possible (see basic first aid). Even if you must bring a hedgehog in do keep putting food outside as there may be siblings or other autumn juveniles making the most of your hospitality. If the food does not go you could continue to provide dry cat biscuits – these will not go off as quickly as tinned food so are less wasteful. Make sure there is water available, especially if feeding dry foods. It is helpful if you can weigh your visitor at least once a week if its size is a concern to ensure it is putting on weight and doing well. Any under 250gms in autumn are likely to be genuine orphans and should be rescued immediately. Hedgehogs that are probably best rescued Hedgehogs are nocturnal so those out in the day are displaying odd behaviour. Even though they appear lively and are rushing around these hedgehogs probably need rescuing in autumn/winter. Once out in the day they can be days away from death. Even when rescued they can seem OK for a day or so and then suddenly collapse and die. So if out in the day whether rushing about or curled up asleep they need rescuing. Hedgehogs do NOT hibernate in the open. They make a nest of leaves etc and disappear into the depths of the nest and are completely hidden. Hedgehogs under 450gms (1lb) that appear to be hibernating (cold and in a tight ball) are suffering from hypothermia and are in fact dying. These must be rescued if they are to stand any chance of survival.

34

Towards the end of October or if bad weather is expected those under 350gms (12oz) may best be rescued whether they are out day or night. If in doubt call us on 01584 890 801 to find a carer near you and seek their advice. In October small ones seen away from your garden eg crossing the road at night may also be best rescued as they may not have a ready supply of food as ones regularly visiting your garden. Feeding They can have hedgehog food, meaty cat or dog food or cat biscuits. They will also need a dish of water, especially if dry biscuits are offered. Feeding Stations Make a feeding station for the outside hedgehogs. Use either a plastic mushroom box or child’s toy box or similar and cut a 13cm x 13cm (5”x 5”) hole in one of the short sides. Place this over the food, like a tunnel, and the hedgehog can get through the hole to the food but it keeps the cats out. A brick on top should stop the box being pushed aside. Another brick or large stone placed 13cm (5”) from the entrance should stop a cat lying down and hooking the food out with its paw. Always make sure there is a little food left in the mornings – if not, you are not feeding them enough. Basic First Aid Line a high-sided box (hedgehogs are good climbers) with newspaper and put it in a warm room. Pick the hedgehog up using a towel and place it in the box; use that towel as some bedding for it. If the hedgehog is lethargic, cold, wobbles and staggers then it needs a hot water bottle or similar. These hedgehogs need more intensive care and are best passed on to a hedgehog rehabilitator as soon as possible. Cover the bottle with some towel and place the hedgehog on this but still with its towel covering it. The water in the bottle will need to be changed every few hours to keep it warm. Alternatives to hot water bottles are soft drink bottles full of hot water, ice cream or margarine tubs full of water with the lid on, wheat bags (UNFRAGRANCED ONLY cover with a small plastic bag to prevent it becoming soiled) a pet snuggle safe or heat pad or a reptile heat mat. Do not use back warming pads for human use, as they are not designed to be urinated on! Provide food and water and then SEEK ADVICE (including the numbers of carers in your area who may be able to help) – telephone us on 01584 890 801. Many autumn juveniles will have lungworms that in turn can cause breathing difficulties. Those already showing problems ie out in the day will be most at risk and are likely to have the highest worm burdens. Symptoms may include lack of appetite, no weight gain even when eating, coughing and rapid breathing. These will need worming and antibiotics so are best passed to a rehabilitator who can arrange veterinary treatment. British Hedgehog Preservation Society www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

Obituary - Pam Stevens a remarkable lady and trustee

P

am and her husband Brian lived in Alresford since the early 1970s where they brought up their 2 sons ,Mark and Ian. Unfortunately when Brian became seriously ill Pam decided to set up a secretarial agency which was a great success and where she could work from home.

In this context I sought her help to provide secretarial assistance for my accountancy practice in 1992 until the present day. When Brian died in 2007 she was able to devote some of her energy to a new venture ,and on 11th February 2008 she was co-opted as a Trustee to the New Alresford Town Trust. She remained a valuable Trustee for 12 years until her death on 28th August 2020. Pam's initial role was on the minibus committee where the key priority was to raise enough money for a new minibus. By June 2008 Pam had raised £12,500 from Winchester City Council as well as £600 from local organisations;she had also agreed terms to sell the current bus for £5800 to Age Concern. With these extra funds the Trustees agreed that Pam should purchase a specially constructed minibus at a price of £55,037 ,which reflected a negotiated discount of nearly £5000 . Pam ran the minibus operation for the next 12 years and in 2020 she produced a booklet to celebrate 50 years of the minibus operation which started in 1970 by trustee Geoffrey Searle -unfortunately the celebration was cancelled due to Covid. The minibus operation involved many hours of work covering arranging drivers schedules, weekly trips, summer outings maintenance of buses and most importantly the passengers .Pam learnt quickly and she was determined that the Trust would always have sufficient monies for the purchase of subsequent minibuses. This was achieved by raising annual grants/donations from sponsors and since 2008 the Trust has raised a staggering £82,255 for the minibuses as well as £11,487 towards the minibus garage extension..As a consequence ,the Trust was able to purchase a new minibus in 2017 at a cost of £58454 without the need for special fund raising. A remarkable achievement by Pam . The second major achievement was the separation of the Town Council from the affairs of the Town Trust.Since 1890 when the Trust was formed

the Council could appoint 5 of the 9 Trustees so that it might unduly influence decisions :furthermore some of these Council nominated Trustees were disinterest in the Trust..This relationship continued to deteriorate with eventually one of the nominated Trustees refusing to support an annual minibus grant . Pam's reaction was swift as she ordered the Council's logo on the minibus to be removed.Eventually Pam's resolved with the other Trustees to approach the Charity Commission and to become a Members Charity in 2015with the Council having no involvement with the running of the Trustee. This separation has been beneficial to both organisations. The third significant acheivement was the expansion of the weekly Thursday market together with the specialist markets such as the French, Italian (for a while) and Broncante which has proved very popular attracting people from all over the county. Alresford is now a real market town. Apart from the above Pam was the hub and voice of the Trust. She chaired the Covid Committee as well as acting as clerk to the Trust. Her main strengths were her determination to get things done and do them properly and fairly. She always cared about the needs of the indvidiual especially those in most need. The Trust will canvas ideas of how to celebrate Pam's life and will hold a commemorative gathering when Covid restrcitions allow. What is certain is that we will need a large hall to accommodate her many relations, friends and amirers. Personally, Pam has been a great friend and colleague to me over the last 28 years and the Trust will never forget her hand work and achievements. The mayor of Winchester gave her an ward for her services to the community in March 2011. She now deserves much more! Robin Atkins Chair - Alresford Town Trust

An estimated 2,500 people attended the Hampshire Country Sports Day, at Bereleigh Estate, East Meon, near Petersfield, under cloudless skies on Sunday 13 September. It was a perfect day weather wise and it was a wonderful opportunity for country folk to see each other and visit our trade stands for clothing and equipment before the autumn country sports season begins, while newcomers enjoyed learning about everything the countryside has to offer.”

Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! GOVERNMENT either or and we shouldn’t listen to the negative mindset that says otherwise. You can find the speech linked from my Facebook page. Recent weeks have, of course, been dominated by the awful events around the school bus crash in Kings Worthy. For those who don’t know, that bus comes through Alresford and picks up young people in the Itchen Valley and we can only thank God no-one was killed as it struck the railway bridge on Wellhouse Lane on its way to Henry Beaufort School.

Steve Brine M.P Parliament is back in full swing now and, without a conference season this year, it’s a long session through until Christmas. Using my decade plus experience, I have been speaking out in recent weeks; of my concerns for the future of many health prevention duties within the remit of the soon to be disbanded Public Health England, on access to Covid testing and that important UK/EU free trade agreement. I also spoke recently in a major debate on aviation and focused on two things; the shameful way British Airways have turned a health crisis in an industrial relations catastrophe and sustainable air travel as we chase our climate change objectives through the ‘jet zero’ programme. It should never be

Jackie’s County Corner for September The ‘It’s Ok ‘helpline will continue until March, operating from 9.30 to 4.30pm, 5 days a week. Calls are triaged. Anyone who is concerned about their situation- or that of a neighbour or friend is invited to call. Help includes prescriptions, meals on wheels, dementia concerns, family hunger, and tackling anxiety with practical support going out for the first time after lockdown. Call 0333 370 4000 I was horrified, and so sorry to hear of the terrible school bus crash at Headbourne Worthy: children from the Itchen Valley and the Worthys were on the bus. Some of the children were hurt, though thankfully, there were no fatalities. Many people have asked: ‘what happens now’? The investigation will take about three months before any conclusions are published. All this happened in the first week of schools opening for all pupils, and in Hampshire, over 90% have returned. Parents who are concerned about sending children back or about the impact lockdown has had on their child’s mental health can call the dedicated HCC Educational Psychologist

44

Speaking on the local TV news, I said at the time how we need clear answers as to how this could ever have happened and, notwithstanding the police operation which must take its proper course, I haven’t wasted any time in this regard. The school, police, council and Stagecoach were round a table with me within days of the incident and they know how upset and angry residents are. There is no doubt (or argument) that this bus was on the wrong route but we need to know why. As importantly for us, there are clearly issues with the timetabling of this service out in the Itchen Valley and I want a speedy resolution to them because my hunch is they’re symptomatic of a home school transport contract that has been found seriously wanting. This is a fast-moving situation, and subject to

helpline 01962 876239 (Tues & Thurs , mornings) Flooding: Flash flooding at the end of August brought 35 mm of rain in 25 minutes (according to HCC) Please report any blocked drains or road cleaning requirements through www. hants.gov.uk: go to roads and transport, then road defects, then report flooding. You can upload photos too. The floods arrived so fast and so unexpectedly, no one authority could have reacted in time but one idea has been suggested by the emergency team: if you don’t have a sandbag, you can keep a ‘growbag’ near your door. When the rains start pouring, use it to divert water away from your door or air bricks. It’s not ideal, but a good start, and may hold the fort in a flash flood. New bus routes from 1st September: Added stops on the ‘free’ bus to Tesco (Winnall) bus from Sutton Scotney, Stoke Charity and Wonston and Kings Worthy, a renewed calland-go taxi service for East Stratton, and a new 95 bus route on a Monday and Thursday for East Stratton, Micheldever, Wonston and Worthys areas are now in operation. These are being trialled for six months to see how they go,

various legal action, but I will keep all updated as best I can via my usual channels. Finally, I passionately believe Winchester has a unique opportunity to become a real workplace destination in the wake of covid and changing work patterns. The question is do we have the local leadership, the ambition and the vision to grab this opportunity? In my recent column, published in the Hampshire Chronicle, I argue that the challenges facing Winchester’s economy and continued dither over its’ regeneration have been badly exposed by the pandemic. My central thesis is that Winchester can no longer afford to indulge in endless debate and self-interested legal challenge because this is all connected to the changing workplace; we should have a bold strategy to be an exciting workplace destination and build an economic powerhouse that can fund the public services and cultural offering we so value. Steve Brine - MP for Winchester, Alresford & Itchen Valley despite the challenges of lockdown distancing.. There are two Government consultations: Planning for the Future, deadline 29th October 2020. This is a fundamental change to the planning system, labelling land as ‘growth, renew or protect’. The Govt wants to increase housebuilding to 300,000 homes a year (currently permission given for 187500 a year), and so there is a second consultation: Changes to the Current Planning System, deadline 1st October 2020, with proposals for a new algorithm that will result in more than 1000 homes a year for Winchester district. I urge you (even if you in the SDNP) to look carefully and respond to these consultations. The real changes are designed to strengthen influence of the Local Plan and reduce the emphasis on public consultation for individual planning applications. Hampshire wants to recruit an HCC Residents Forum to test the public’s response to policy changes. The charity is thrilled to have received support from The Alresford PIGS who have generously donated funds to cover the costs of at least two 'walk and talk sessions' for seven members of Winchester Go LD who live in Alresford and the Itchen Valley. Did you know that your mood can be improved by as little as 10 minutes exercise? The inequalities in physical and psychological health faced by people with learning disabilities is well recognised. Adults with learning disabilities are more at risk to a number of physical and mental health conditions. Being active is an effective way to boost wellbeing. “Coronavirus and lockdown has exposed a number of vulnerabilities in adults with learning disabilities” explains Winchester Go LD Trustee, Betty Chadwick “We are seeing first hand the impact that lockdown has had on both the mental and physical health of our members. As lockdown eases and social distancing becomes a little more relaxed, we have all been urged to stay alert and use common sense - these instructions are particularly difficult and confusing to people who have a learning disability.” Winchester Go LD started offering one to one support in the form of a 1 hour 'walk and talk' which replaced the one to one support normally provided from their office at the Winchester Discovery Centre. The sessions have been introduced as a direct response to the increased need for support during the COVID-19 crisis. This project also helps to keep members active and it has helped to rebuild their confidence in being outside in a safe and socially distanced way. We have had enormously positive feedback on this project from our members, their families and staff. Louise says “Walk

We are working hard to support our members and we have adapted well. Our online activities are popular (these also include 3 weekly exercise classes), we have started our 'walk and talk' project, we have run a 'friendship through food' program - a combined program of online cookery classes and small group picnics. We are committed to do all that we possibly can to support our members through this most challenging time. We understand that there is no one size fits all and we have learned to become flexible and dynamic. We are also very well supported by volunteers who are experienced, loyal, caring and extremely dedicated to the work that our charity does.” We anticipate long term benefits in improved wellbeing and increased activity levels. The Winchester Go LD has been struck by the loss of 2 of it’s largest annual fundraising events this year. This is at a time when both demand and need for work is at its highest. To find out more about Winchester Go LD or to give a donation please visit their website: https://www.winchestergold.org.uk/ ; regular updates on their activities are also posted through their Facebook page: https://www. facebook.com/winchestergold.org.uk/ . Any size of contribution would be very enormously appreciated. Supporting members' well-being is at the heart of Go LD work.

EDUCATION On Friday, the annual Pinny Service welcomed new pupils. Led by the wonderful Godolphin Chaplain, Revd. Dr. Stella Wood, pupils and their pinnys were blessed as they were welcomed into the Godolphin Prep community.

How to help your child achieve high performance By Jane Gandee, headmistress of St. Swithun’s Winchester We used to think that we are all born with a certain, fixed level of intelligence; that some people will achieve top grades at school and perform excellently in life whilst others will never achieve much. Today we know that the inherent lifelong plasticity of the brain means that we all have the potential to become cleverer and to perform at a high level given enough time and the right circumstances. While some children naturally acquire the thinking skills, values, attitudes and attributes needed for a lifetime of success, many don’t. They need to be taught explicitly how to recognise, practise and embed these factors, and this happens most effectively in a partnership between parents and school. Two years ago St Swithun’s joined the High Performance Learning (HPL) international family of schools which was founded by Professor Deborah Eyre. Through her work with gifted individuals, she identified the thinking skills and values that high performers have in common. There is much overlap with the attributes which the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) lists as the most important for today’s children to acquire for the future: solving complex problems; critical, creative and flexible thinking; managing, co-operating

A Pinny Service to celebrate the start of term at Godolphin Prep

This Autumn Term will bring celebrations of the Harvest and School Nativity, both much anticipated events by all. This year the events will be broadcast virtually, but no doubt still be surrounded by enthusiasm and community spirit. There is a definite buzz at the Prep as pupils and staff are excited and eager to be back together and ready to explore the year ahead.

On Tuesday 8 September, Godolphin Prep enjoyed a safe return welcoming their pupils back to School. Whilst this year will be slightly different, with pupils staying in class ‘bubbles’, Head Julia Miller commented ‘it is nice to see the Prep busy and full of life again after such a long time away’.

and negotiating with people; demonstrating emotional intelligence; being serviceorientated and being confident in judgement and decision-making. Through the HPL initiative, children as young as three years old at St Swithun’s begin to recognise and explore these concepts in an age-appropriate way and to apply them across all areas of the curriculum throughout their school career. So what can parents do to encourage their children to develop the necessary values, attitudes and attributes? Well, research shows that a parent’s educational experience, beliefs and values affect their child’s own selfconcept, interest in school and achievement. A parent who tells their child that they themselves were hopeless at languages, for example, gives the impression that languages are unimportant or impossibly difficult. Their child internalises this, assumes that they will struggle so there is no point in studying which leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Similarly, if a parent gives up tasks halfway through because they can’t do them, their children learns not to persist in the face of difficulty.

by example, believe that with effort their child is capable of high performance in multiple areas, and have conversations that reinforce the importance of a good work ethic, continuous improvement and trying your best.

The most important things that parents can do to help their child succeed are lead

Why does academic achievement matter? Because children who do well at school and then at university are, statistically speaking, more likely to have greater wealth, better health and happiness, and to make a greater contribution to society. Research shows that exceptional intelligence is not a particularly good indicator of exceptional performance in life. But the right values and attitudes are. It is therefore crucial that parents and the school work together. St Swithun’s is an independent school for girls in Winchester, educating day students aged from 3 to 18 and with boarding for girls from age 11. Jane Gandee is head of the senior school.
