We're All Going on an Ant Hunt
If it’s not unusual then why is it not usual to return home in the early hours of the morning following a slightly later evening out to discover the contents of the family pantry cupboard neatly, if not slightly unlovingly, strewn about the kitchen, dining room and any other surface deemed suitable to be the temporary resting place of weary, sagged bags of flour, sugar and the occasional withered vanilla pod. A quick rub of the eyes was in order. If the expectation had been to dismiss the notion that this was in fact reality, the hope was a crushing one.
“Ants!” The monosyllable was uttered in such a way that one could not quite determine whether this was a timely explanation for the unusual bomb disposal technique, a declaration of war or a vague attempt to lure said ants out of their hiding places. If we were playing Pied Piper, a greater incentive had to be extended.
Rubbing ones eyes didn’t help. Greater visuals only revealed yet more piles of tins, bags of flour and peculiar jars and clear packets of questionable contents. Raisins, nuts and seeds were stationed beside noodles and rice, jam jars and sticky bottles of soy sauce, barrel aged vinegar and the chocolate chips that had been forgotten for three years but now provided a welcome source of energy.
Specific yes but very relevant. Certainly, wading through piles of flour like a 17th century miller and carefully unwrapping each packet in a way that didn’t send a volcanic eruption of flour clouds into the atmosphere is quite the skill and one that I am now rather proud my Curriculum Vitae contains. It was a challenge to decide whether it should be included under the subheading of Hobbies and Interests or Experiences….perhaps both.
At this stage, the consideration of having nocturnal parents was one that crossed my mind in somewhat bemused tones. It was perhaps usual for twenty-somethings to return home quietly, in fear of awakening the parents from their slumber after a tough work week, however the atypical has never been apparent in our household. Madness is a consistent theme hence the ant-hunting in the early hours of a Saturday morning.
It all began earlier that evening when the junior members of the household were out and about and the more mature members of
the family were settling down for some quiet time. At some point in the evening, the pantry cupboard - for those who may not be familiar with the term, a pantry cupboard is a modern day twist on the highly sensible addition to any kitchen providing a resting place for cereals, grains and jars and the occasional hidden chocolate bar. Most modern houses are now devoid of their pantries, hence my mother’s sourcing and repurposing an old pine cupboard, complete with shelves, which now housed the family’s dry goods.
Anyway, the pantry cupboard was opened and a train of large ants was revealed, perhaps a hunting party on their way to a takeaway, perhaps another family returning from a night out. In any case, the moment of chaos had arrived and hastily, torches were brandished, instruments of weaponry were taken up and the food supplies were moved to safety. Now, it might be worth mentioning that although not as large as its walk-in counterpart, this pantry cupboard is sizeable, storing and protecting the dry supplies of an entire household.
Flour was flung to the distant part of the kitchen, sugar was groaningly relocated to higher ground and the occasional pause in proceedings to peruse the forgotten items of fig syrup that was a gift from aunty five years ago, with the seven year best before date passed in the last century, sneaky packets of and not-ourusual-brand-but-that’s-all-there-was-in-the-supermarket Covid purchases was quickly hastened at the sight of yet more ants, no doubt formulating their own plans. By the time the younger members of the family had returned, all eyes and ears were on ant hunting duty. The contents of the cupboard now completely removed from the cupboard, a large basket of varying bread flours and sugars was to be my close companion for the next few hours of the morning as each half-used packet required careful unravelling followed by the tap test to see if any more hungry ants could be discovered.
If you have ever felt overdressed for an occasion, remember that a going-out outfit is never ideal for ant hunting in the early hours of Saturday morning in the family kitchen. The next time your family descends into chaos, don’t forget it’s not unusual.

We left them to fit the kitchen while we went away and they did a fantastic job. They even did unplanned kindnesses like changing a broken garage door lock free of charge. We keep finding little unexpected touches that delight us. We will use them again for other jobs in the house in the future. When you find people like this, you don’t want to let them go. If anyone reading this decides to use them, you will not be disappointed.

A name you can count on in
Summer in Alresford…
A name you can count on in a changing world…
Our pretty town comes into its own at this time of the year, with hanging baskets of summer blooms, ducks splashing happily on the river, and The Fulling Mill looking suitably gorgeous.
Being a bit off the beaten track, Alresford has retained much of its character, making it a very special place to live. As people who live here already will know, once you discover its charm for yourself, few other places will match up to it. Having been voted this spring as one of the best places to live by The Sunday Times, we are seeing even more people enquiring about moving here.
A valuation of your home is normally the first place to start when you are considering moving. Please speak to one of our friendly team to arrange a free market appraisal.
We hope to hear from you soon!

A
The Elephant in the room!
Research shows that 10/10 of us will die!! It’s a taboo topic as we fear that by talking about all things death and dying, it may make it happen faster, YET it is one of life's certainties.
I am a palliative care nurse specialist with much of my nursing career (in hospices, hospital, community teams) caring for people and their loved ones facing a life limiting illness and more recently completing a qualification as an end-of-life Doula, embracing a non-medicalised approach to our end-of-life care alongside our NHS professionals. Sadly, in my career many of the important decisions around our dying / treatments / choices are made in a crisis, and the impact can remain with others late on into their grief journey.
My role can be vast; to help navigate and document end-of-life plans / help understand and learn about the natural dying process and support delicate conversations, with my passion to help people live well until they die with dignity.
Recently having found likeminded friends in Alresford and inspired by my doula training, we have started to nudge these sensitive conversations and open up a healthy curiosity with a monthly ‘Befriend The End Café’ in Alresford library every 1st Wednesday of the month.
I have been overwhelmed by the interest of strangers showing up, displaying their vulnerability and keen to engage in conversation, all things relating to living well and dying well, and I am excited that we may offer many more opportunities to get this ‘Elephant in the room ‘out in the open in a supportive and nurturing space. If you are interested in learning more about how I may be able to help support you.

Stunning new Tasting Barn & Cellar Door for Raimes Sparkling
Tours at the vineyard give you a glimpse into vineyard life from one of the Raimes family team. Starting with a gentle stroll to their established Chardonnay field and then back to the barn for a taste of two vintage cuvees. Bookings are required for their vineyard tours or guided tastings which are a mini masterclass on the aromas and flavours and wine making decisions, but there’s no need
Raimes Sparkling has built a beautiful new Tasting Barn which opened in May. This gorgeous new site now hosts tours, their cellar door shop and wine tasting experiences. Fitting neatly into the surrounding countryside, it has a cool and smart interior. You have the feeling of visiting a wine estate from New Zealand or South Africa.
“Previously, our courtyard was located in our 15C farmyard in Tichborne but we have now grown into this new exciting space“ describes Augusta Raimes. “It’s been a big step for us to create this new building and we are delighted. The barn is in our newest vineyard field and it feels wonderful to experience the wine right where it all begins with the vines.”
Located opposite Hinton Ampner House, it is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am. Drop in for a glass of their wine, a tasting flight or grazing board with regional cheeses and charcuterie. With seating inside and out it’s a visit for any weather and with plenty of space large groups can be accommodated.
to book if you want to pop in for a tasting flight or glass of wine.
Raimes are also celebrating achieving their latest scoop of gold medals, receiving acclaim and international recognition for the 2018 Classic and 2018 Vintage Rose. The 2018 Classic, from that incredible vintage, is looking to be one of their most successful releases so far. Achieving 95 points and gold medals from both Decanter and The International Wine and Spirit Competition. Decanter judges described “Orchard
characters on the very elegant nose, good concentration on the palate with crisp citrus and bready notes. Long, elegant finish and division of structural power.”
Augusta and Robert Raimes are grower producers, and with their family farming heritage they strive to cultivate the very best in quality. Their care and attention through every part of the process, leads to growing exceptional fruit and making incredible wine, recognised with these international Gold medals.

Goodbye to Dr. Elboray & Dr. Allberry
We say goodbye to Dr. Shereen Elboray on 14th July. Dr. Elboray joined in January but she is planning on working in a GP Surgery closer to her home. We thank Dr. Elboray for the work she done in the time she was with us & we wish her all the best with her future role. Dr. Charlotte Allberry will be going on maternity leave in mid July (or maybe sooner if the heat continues) we wish her a safe delivery & arrival of her baby & we look forward to welcoming her back after her maternity leave.
Two very special musicians provide accompaniment: Nicholas Sawley (Head of Keyboard, Winchester College) and Alastair Hume (found member of the King’s Singers). The choir’s brilliant new conductor Jamal Sutton will be in charge. Jamal opens the concert with four well known Elizabethan madrigals : ‘Now is the month of Maying’; ‘Weep, O mine eyes’; ‘O that the learned poets’ and ‘Fire! Fire!’. Later in the programme these madrigals are exactly repeated … but this time arranged by Bob Chilcott to some very modern jazz vibes ! A perfect programme for a summer’s evening light entertainment.
The choir are well established in Winchester and the South and 2024 marks their 40th Anniversary year. See the choir’s website: www.southernvoices.co.uk for information on this and more details about becoming a member, a friend and much more. Tickets £16 (Concessions £1 age 18 and under); ticketsource.co.uk/southernvoices; Telephone 0333 666 3366 (booking fees apply); or at the door. Registered Charity 1086868.

compositions. As a student at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, in the early 1980s, Klein was instinctively drawn to the immediacy and poignancy of figurative art. Encouraged by Paula Rego, a visiting lecturer, to seek a way forward in the visual diaries that she had been keeping, Klein focused her artistic gaze on her life and young family. Rego also inspired Klein to experiment with printmaking. It was through these early woodcuts and drypoint etchings that Klein began to develop her distinctive style, which is widely loved and admired by so many.

The 2023 Bowling Season is underway
It really is great to be back at Alresford Bowling Club playing outside in its beautiful surroundings on a splendid green, which is the envy of many visiting bowls clubs. This season I hope to be able to build upon my knowledge and skills which I learnt last year as a new member. A full season of fixtures and club competitions has begun and I have played in one friendly match so far. It was a very pleasant, congenial afternoon, with a tea provided afterwards - very welcome too! Although encouraged to take part in friendly matches and club competitions there is no pressure to do so. I read recently that bowls is a game that is easy to learn but tricky to master and after having six months without playing during the winter I would totally agree! The ethos of the club is to enjoy playing bowls, improve your skills, make new friends and have fun. If this includes a win then that is, of course, the icing on the cake!
I was asked to become a player committee member along with another novice player at the
end of last season. The committee has taken on board our suggestions, and introduced name badges for all members this year. This will assist existing and new members and will, hopefully, stop me wondering why the person I was calling Martin did not respond only to find out that his name was, in fact, Derek or was it John?! Also, the entrance to the club has been enhanced with a beautiful maple tree and a Bowls England coach has been approached to provide training for those club members who would like to participate.
This year the club has secured sponsorship from Alresford Hearing Studio which has provided us with a set of score cards and a plaque. We hope to gain more sponsorship from companies willing to support their local bowling club. If you would be willing to offer sponsorship please do contact our Secretary.
The club recently held a beginners’ taster session for those interested in finding out more about the club and the game of bowls. It was a fun afternoon with several attendees subsequently joining the club or coming along again and participating in our weekly roll ups
(held twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday at £2 / session). Members can have a game, enjoy a cuppa, a biscuit and sometimes even cake!
If you are contemplating whether to join a bowling club and are feeling apprehensive, I would encourage you to come along and have a go. I joined the Alresford Bowling Club last year and felt very concerned about coming on my own with no knowledge at all about how to play the game of bowls. However, players were very friendly and encouraging and I even surprised myself that I could actually get near the jack (the target ball) although this is still challenging at times! The club also has social events throughout the year too.
There are bowls which you can borrow, so if you have a pair of flat shoes which will not mark the green then do contact the secretary, and come along and have a go. What have you got to lose? You might just be a budding bowl’s champion! I hope to see you soon.

Drought Control, Water Management
Lawn Watering and Drought Management
Lawns need water. Let’s understand the water requirements of your lawn and how wetting agents and drought management products work.
Why do I need to be concerned about moisture levels in my lawn?
In times of extended drought, grass reduces the water it supplies to the leaf. It stores water in the roots to keep itself alive. The leaf will turn brown, appearing dead. The plant may be dead, you won’t know for sure until moisture returns to the root zone. If a grass plant had other issues to deal with, such as grub damage, that has reduced its root mass, it may well die in a period of drought as it doesn’t have enough root to retain moisture needed to survive.
Drought conditions often result in more lawn weeds and less beneficial soil biology
Some grasses tolerate drought better than others. Failure to provide water when your lawn needs it could result in more issues with weed grasses such as Poa Annua (annual meadow grass) which are better adapted to take advantage of poor conditions. Certain weeds thrive in drought conditions. Not watering your lawn could be making your lawn weed issues worse. As grasses die back, this creates space in your lawn for new weed seeds to settle, ready for germination later. In addition, a number of weed types thrive in drought conditions. One such weed is yarrow. Difficult to control once established in your lawn, yarrow is very challenging to irradicate.
Healthy soil biology is essential for a healthy lawn. When moisture levels drop, so does the population of beneficial soil microbes, responsible for breaking down organic matter, excreting nutrients into the soil which benefits your lawn grasses. This breakdown of organic matter also reduces surface thatch.
How do wetting agents benefit my lawn?
Not everyone can water or wants to water their lawn. There was a time when all we could do for lawns in times of drought was add water or wait for rain to return. If soil has dried out too much, then often that water struggles to be absorbed into the soil. This is when soil has become hydrophobic and repels moisture. Soil in this condition also struggles to hold on to water and it quickly drains through the soil out of the grass root-zone.
A more modern approach to moisture management involves applications of wetting agents. This technology was developed for golf courses and has now found its way into modern, professional lawncare.
What is a wetting agent and how does it work?
A wetting agent is a specialised molecule which is used to reduce the surface tension of water. Surface tension is what forms water into a droplet. The fact that water has a high surface tension can be an issue when we want water to penetrate a surface or spread throughout another material – such as soil. Wetting agents help water penetrate into soil and then hold water in the root zone for longer, reducing water wastage and making any water far more effective for plants.
Wetting agents and moisture retaining products can drastically reduce the quantity of water you need to maintain a healthy lawn through periods of drought.
Typically, wetting agents come in a liquid form and are applied to your lawn using a sprayer. Some manufacturers supply wetting agents in granular form where the liquid has been applied to a carrier which can then be applied using a spreader. In this format the inert carrier would break down following application, releasing the wetting agent into the soil when water is applied, or it rains.
Will wetting agents reduce the cost of watering my lawn?
The amount of water you need to apply to your lawn can be significantly reduced through the use of wetting agents. In addition, the time it takes for your lawn to become stressed in a period of drought can be extended and therefore you can start watering later or you may even find that the rain has returned before you need to begin to water.
Do wetting agents work if there is no rain?
Wetting agents are there to make water more effective for your lawn. Applied in a period of drought they will sit patiently on the surface of the soil waiting for rain to return. When it does, they spring into action, aiding the penetration of that rain into the soil, spreading it laterally and holding it in the root zone for longer. In this way they make even the smallest amount of rainfall more effective. As lawncare professionals, we have access to industry leading products and technology that not only helps you achieve a wonderful, healthy lawn you can be proud of, but also products that help you to avoid longer term issues you may not even be aware of. Learn more about lawncare from our website or contact us to ask our advice.

Jackie’s County Corner
The County Council has a budget consultation out until the 23rd July. The link is www.hants. gov.uk/budgetconsultation You can see a commentary before you respond. Can I urge you to take part? Often the low level of responses implies that citizens aren’t interested, which I’m sure is far from the truth. Suggestions to reduce costs are cutting school crossing patrols, cutting HWRC costs by over 50%, and not resurfacing roads! But there are implications for social care for children and adults too: services which are already overstretched.
plans. Go to www.hants.gov.uk and search county councillor grants. This fund is open until the money runs out, so please contact me in the next few months to ensure you are not disappointed.
Water quality is a hot topic and I was pleased to join Margot Power on a group visit to the water treatment plant at Alresford recently. There, we took the politics out of the conversation, and learned a lot about the science and the way the engineers manage the varying flows in very dry and very wet weather to avoid storm overflows. It is heartening to hear that the site has capacity to take the new developments in the town. We discussed how Southern Water manages the chemicals and other materials that arise from the waste water, but wherever we live in the division, we can all play our part too. Only put the three P’s* in the toilet, and please choose cleaning products with the lowest phosphate levels if you can.
Alresford Chamber of Commerce
Talking of potholes; I asked three questions at the last HCC meeting, about potholes, recycling and the cost of travel to special needs education. My first question related to your complaints about tyre and wheel damage: how many complaints had HCC received about potholes in the first three months of 2023? The answer was a staggering 1175, approx. 10 every day, distinctly increasing from the previous year. You can see the answers to all three questions on the HCC County Council recording of the 18th May 2023.
The County Councillor grant scheme is now open for small grants. Each councillor has a total fund of £8000, so you are advised to contact me before applying so that we can discuss your
year. We put on our bee suit and headed for the hives at their teaching apiary and saw first hand inside a working beehive. It was a wonderful experience and a great way to see if you want to go further into keeping bees and go onto further courses.
The course is run by Rachel and head beekeeper Dave. They are a husband-and-wife team who have an amazing rapport with each other which makes the whole experience relaxing and most enjoyable. Their passion for bees cannot be mistaken and started at an early age as they both come from families where their grandfathers were beekeepers. Who shared their passion and knowledge and taught them about the wisdom of bees.
Although maybe not in your ward, the Cart and Horses junction is used by most drivers and cyclists After the fatal accident in the Autumn, the local councillors felt they had no democratic way to voice their concerns to the Exec Member and it was a relief that he was persuaded to meet with Parish and City Councillors. We discussed every suggestion that you have put to us for short term junction improvements which are now being assessed for feasibility by the traffic engineers. We acknowledged that the time for major change is when building the new junction 9 is and the County will be consulting on options for that new Cart and Horses junction in the summer, probably July- September. I raised this matter too, at the M3 Junction 9 Open Floor Hearing in May. You can see the full (OFH) Open Floor Hearing on the NSIP website; my presentation is also on my website.

Upcoming Closure Of Lloyds Bank In Alresford
Councillor Isaacs recently informed us of the extremely sad news about the upcoming closure of Lloyds Bank in Alresford. We know that many businesses and residents alike are very concerned, and we have been assured that Councillor Isaacs is working closely with Steve Brine MP, who will be visiting Lloyds Bank to discuss things further. They are contacting LINK to ensure two cashpoints remain in Alresford and there is no gap in provision.
Honey Bee Happy
On Saturday 10th June both Estelle (Chair) and I with some members of our families, spent a fantastic 3 hours on an Introduction to Beekeeping taster session. We were joined by another 7 people who also wanted to experience and learn about these wonderful creatures. The taster session gave us an overview into the world of honeybees & beekeeping, the hive and equipment, how the colony of bees all work together and what happens in the beekeeping
They have taken their passion from Ethical Beekeepers into the Bee Farmers realm by continuing to follow their ancestors down the ethical route by doing it the traditional way, which is more commonly known as the “Artisan Way”. They also rescue bees and receive many phone call requests from the public who have found bees nesting on their property and belong to the Bee Farmers Association. The honey they produce is amazing and for every jar they sell 50p is donated to HART Wildlife rescue.

Things New Alresford’ Facebook page makes clear, these events are highly valued by the town, giving the chance to visit some unique Alresford landmarks. There will be further Open Days in July, August and September – do come along.
Lindens), 2 different Maples, and Hornbeam, Whitebeam, and White Poplar? The main Avenue is primarily Limes, wonderfully towering and handsome, great for pollinators, with hairy-backed heart-shaped leaves, and dripping a sweet and sticky residue. And a few Copper Beech create a stunning colour contrast in the middle of the Avenue. Over 100 people entered our Tree Draw, and the lucky winner received a beautiful Ted Hepenstal print of the Avenue.
2000 visitors and Planting Plans
NATT has already welcomed over 2000 visitors to Open Days in 2023, with a bumper day on June 18th when over 350 people visited the Norman Bridge, with hundreds more having a look around both the Museum and Eel House. We also welcomed some new volunteers to help run these Open Days, which is wonderful – as the chatter on the ‘All

We were also delighted to take part in the Watercress Festival this year, meeting old friends and making new ones. A large map of the Avenue and Broad Street was the main display, showing the 165 trees that NATT is responsible for. Did you know that we have 12 species of tree, including 3 different Limes (or

Later this year we intend to create some new areas in the Avenue where we’ll stop mowing, and instead plant native wildflowers. Working with New Leaf Alresford, we need to work out what is most likely to thrive in our shady spaces, and will be looking for helping with planting and maintenance from September. These areas will be away from the road edges and paths so won’t get in the way of driver sightlines or walkers and runners, and hopefully will provide peaceful havens for insects and birds.

Students at Peter Symonds College next to a new fridge purchased with the help of Winchester City Council’s cost-of-living grant
A local college is setting up a scheme providing low-cost food for students, staff and family struggling with rising costs, with the help of a cost-of-living grant from Winchester City Council. Peter Symonds College received a grant of just over £3,500 to support the opening of a community pantry, which it estimates will be able to support around 1,000 people. The pantry is being particularly targeted towards around 400 students who are eligible for free school meals or in receipt of bursary funding, and staff and families of students who are struggling financially are also able to benefit from the scheme.
The grant from the council helped the college to purchase freezers and shelving, giving the pantry some much-needed extra food storage.
When your broadband contract finishes it is a good time to shop around, you do not have to stay with the same supplier. You might be surprised how much you could save. I was with BT up until now, after I spoke with some of the other suppliers, I found the identical service for more than 40 per cent less with the price fixed for 2 years. Remember, except for Virgin and some of the newer fibre cable companies, everyone uses the same cable network supplied and serviced by Open Reach.

Local democracy depends on you showing your choices in the ballot box. And especial thanks to those few of you that did turn up without Voter ID but went away and then returned with the necessary papers without upsetting polling staff. The polling staff are given the task of enforcing what many consider an unnecessary law. Following the local election and the ceremony of mayor making, Winchester City Council has started another municipal year. There is much as always to be done and many problems to be solved.
Sun Hill Roundabout Construction Access
Winchester Council continues to pursue measures to remove phosphates from treated water themselves and to encourage Southern Water to do the same. A visit to the Southern Water Waste Water Treatment site on Appledown Lane allowed Margot to further these discussions.
Cart and Horses junction at Kings Worthy
There was a useful meeting with officers from Hampshire Highways to receive an update on the problem of this junction and possible options for a solution. The need to develop both short-term road safety measures and a longer-term permanent engineered solution was emphasised by yet another traffic accident on May 29th, resulting in injuries for two people.
Central Winchester updates: Approved demolition of the Friars Gate Surgery
‘capacity study’ for land around the station, some of which is owned by the council gave a presentation and initiated a discussion. The purpose of the study is to ascertain the financial feasibility of possible regeneration uses. The financial benefits appear to be marginal, unless significant community benefit can be delivered, development at present would seem unwise.
Freedom of the City
The Royal Logistic Corps was given the honour of the freedom of the city on Thursday 1st June. This ceremony allows the Corps, to march through the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and with drums beating. In the past soldiers were seen as potentially dangerous and badly behaved, so it took much trust to the open the city gates and allow them in. The ceremony underlines the close relationship between the City and the various service organisations at Worthy Down. The occasion was marked by an inspection of the parade by HRH the Princess Royal.
The debate between the developers and Hampshire Council continues. The main threat to us is that if it drags on and the groundworks cannot get done before winter, the amount of construction traffic necessary will be a lot more as the chalk will not be dry enough for re-use.
At a planning committee meeting the demolition of the old Friars Gate surgery, closed for many years and in very poor condition was approved. The site will have a meanwhile use as a temporary pocket park for about two years and as a work site for an archaeological dig, with community involvement. Another vital step towards re-generating the area.

Protect Your Pooch and Our Rivers
Our dogs love to cool off in hot weather, but did you know that a dip in the river could reduce their flea and tick protection? Many spot-on treatments wash off in water, forcing dog owners to spend more time and money to keep their pet safe.
These treatments can also do serious harm to a river’s wildlife. Because they are insecticides, they can kill the larvae of species like mayflies, damselflies, and dragonflies. As a food source for fish, bats, and birds, these insects are crucial to the health of our rivers.
If you have a dog, ask your vet about flea treatment tablets, which don’t wash off in water. If you stick with spot-on treatments, explore other ways to beat the heat. A cooling vest can keep your dog refreshed during a walk, while a shallow paddling pool is great for at home.
As we seek to protect both our dogs and our wildlife, it might be time for a new approach to flea and tick treatment. A recent paper from Imperial College London notes that some ingredients have been banned in farming, and highlights the risk of parasites becoming immune to their effects.
One of the paper’s authors, Veterinary Surgeon Dr Andrew Prentis, suggests asking your vet “what is best for [your] pet, what is safe for the environment, and whether such regular preventative treatments are needed. In the same way that we only take antibiotics when we’re ill - not every month - we may need to apply the same principle to parasite treatments for our pets."
To learn more about our local chalk streams, and how you can care for them, check out the Watercress and Winterbournes scheme at www.hiwwt.org.uk/winterbournes. Our work is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
There are few places lovelier to visit than chalk streams in summertime. Their vibrant wildlife and crystal-clear water make them ideal spots for walking on a warm day. Embark on a lively stroll along their banks, or take a quiet moment to enjoy their serene beauty. Look for brown trout, butterflies, and water voles; listen for coots, dragonflies, and kingfishers.
This talk will showcase some great places to see these amazing habitats in north and central Hampshire. From well-known treasures to underrated gems, get inspiration for days out and learn how to visit in a way that's safe for wildlife. Hampshire Countryside Service will also join us to share top tips for getting the most from the Rights of Way network.

Winchester Citizens Advice
Lesley
Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice
Winchester District gives advice on what to do if something goes wrong on your package holiday.
We’ve booked a package holiday to Spain. It’s our first time booking this sort of getaway, and a friend recently had a terrible experience when things went wrong on a similar trip. What sort of help is available if something does happen?
Hopefully you’ll have a lovely time but if something isn’t as you expected, the Citizens Advice website has lots of information about what to do and what compensation you may be eligible for.
Firstly, tell the company or travel agent you booked with as soon as possible. This way you’re more likely to be able to get it sorted quicker. If you don’t say anything until you get home, you might get less or no compensation at all.
If the holiday you went on turned out to be lower in value than the one you originally booked you can make a claim for ‘loss of value’. For example, you paid for a deluxe room but only got a standard one, if it wasn't sorted out at the time you can claim back the difference in value.
You can also claim compensation for any extra money you have to spend while away, for example the hotel was a bus ride away from the beach rather than across the road as advertised. This is called claiming for ‘out-of-pocket expenses’. If this does happen make sure you keep all your receipts for things like bus journeys.
If big parts of the trip you booked didn’t happen or services weren’t provided, for example a planned two-day excursion was cancelled and no alternative was organised, you can make a claim for ‘loss of enjoyment’. You can also make this claim if something happens that causes you distress or disappointment, such as the pool was closed for the whole trip.
It’s worth noting that there’s no strict guidance on how much you can claim for loss of enjoyment but any claim you make must be reasonable. You can’t get compensation if you simply didn’t enjoy the holiday or if the problem was out of the holiday company’s controllike bad weather.
Check the information you received when you made the booking to see what you’re supposed to get. If you don’t get the service you’ve been promised, you may be entitled to compensation for breach of contract. You might also be able to claim from your travel insurance – check if your policy covers this.
If you’re still not sure what to do, you can call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 or you can talk to an adviser at Citizens Advice Winchester District by calling 0808 278 7861.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are).
1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3.
Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Winchester City Council Report
are now concerned more than ever about preserving the environment: about waste segregation and recycling.
It is time for a policy that encourages the replacement of bins as they get older and that seek to reduce this burden on residents. A fair bin policy would take into account the current economic challenges experienced by residents who are already paying for waste collection services, including council taxes. Paying additional fees for replacement bins may be an unnecessary financial burden.
Fair Bin Policy Campaign
When your bin wears out or is damaged you would expect Winchester City Council to replace it. Yes? Free of charge? Well, as current policy stands this is not the case. If you need a new bin because yours is damaged, the Council currently expects you to fork out £33. I feel this is unfair on hard pressed council tax payers. I think that we deserve more. That is why as your local councillor I am launching my Fair Bin Policy. If your bin is damaged through no fault of your own you should be entitled to a replacement free of charge. After all we
In 2004 and 2006 the conservatives ensured every resident had a free bin provided (black and then green) Where is the LibDem plan for replacement of these bins? If the bin breaks because it is old then well done to the resident for looking after it so well. It is not the fault of the resident or Biffa. The current Administration, the Liberal Democrats, need to urgently review their policy and look at how they will replace bins as they get older.
With revised policy guidelines in place, this Council can successfully reduce the burden on residents and encourage fair practices
causing devastating pollution, endangering lives and the future of the land itself. Can the tempest crisis unite them to live and love and work together with nature to battle the inevitable tide of climate change? Will love win the day?

Closure of Lloyds bank
It is extremely sad news to hear about the upcoming closure of Lloyds Bank in Alresford. I know many residents and businesses alike are very concerned. I am working closely with Steve Brine MP who will be visiting Lloyds Bank to discuss things further. We are contacting LINK to ensure two cashpoints remain in Alresford and there is no gap in provision I will let everyone know as soon as there is positive news.
Overnight parking charges!
The current Administration, the Liberal Democrats, have introduced overnight parking charges in Winchester City car parks. I have joined businesses and residents in raising concerns over the introduction of this overnight charge. The lack of consultation has rightly worried many along with concerns about this potentially being introduced in Alresford.

Crab & Asparagus Tart
SERVES 4 PEOPLE
PASTRY INGREDIENTS
• 180g plain flour
• 90g cold butter, cut into small pieces
• 1 egg yolk mixed with 2 tbsp water (reserve the white for glazing the pastry)
FILLING INGREDIENTS
• 200g fresh crab meat (½ white, ½ brown meat)
• 300g tender asparagus
• 2 large eggs
• 1 egg yolk
• 260ml double cream
METHOD
Heat the oven to 200C. Making the pastry. Seive the flour into a large bowl with a pinch of salt, then add the diced butter. Take a table knife or pastry scraper and continue to cut the butter into smaller pieces in the flour. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then add the egg yolk and water.
Use the knife or pastry scraper to cut in the liquid and then pull the mix together with your hands, trying not to overwork it, until you have a ball of pastry. Alternatively, put the flour, salt and butter into a food processor and whizz until you have crumbs. Add the liquid and pulse the mixture until it comes together. Wrap the pastry and chill in the fridge for about 10 mins, before rolling out to fit your tin. Chill again for at least 30 mins.
Blind bake the pastry: cover it with greaseproof paper, fill it with baking beans or dried pulses and place in the oven for about 15 mins or until the pastry is almost ready. Remove the paper and beans, prick the pastry with a fork and place back in the oven for another 5-10 mins, until the really dry and crisp. Brush with a little beaten egg white and bake for an extra 2 mins. This may seem a rigmarole, but soggy pastry can be the ruination of a perfect tart.
Turn the oven down to 180C. Cut the asparagus spears to fit the tart. Plunge into boiling water for about 1 min if pencil-thin and just 2-3 mins for finger-thick spears. Drain and refresh in a bowl of cold water.
Beat the eggs and yolk with a fork, stir in the cream and white crabmeat and season with a little salt and pepper. Once the tart shell is ready, spread a layer of the brown crab meat over the base (this is where most of the crab favour is) and then pour over the crab custard. Arrange the asparagus on top of the tart and carefully place in the oven for 20-25 mins, until the filling is set and just wobbly.
Allow to sit for about 15 mins before removing the tin and serving warm with a simple salad and perhaps some new potatoes.

New TownAlresford Council
Lengthsman Duties
Alresford is fortunate to have a lengthsman who visits the parish five times a year. This is supplementary to WCC cutting our verges on highways and some paths.
Originally, the name lengthsman referred to someone who kept a "length" of road neat, tidy, and passable in the Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on boundary marking. Employed originally by the 'Lords of the Manor' and latterly by parish councils, they would keep grass and weeds down in verges, keep drainage ditches clear and repair fences. If you spot a footpath within the parish that is overgrown or a sign/street name plate that needs cleaning, please report it to the council office either by email or telephone. committeeclerk@newalresford-tc.gov.uk
Tel: 01962 732079
Hanging Baskets
The floral displays are now looking very colourful around the central part of the town. The Meteorological office is suggesting below average rainfall and the temperatures remaining above average for this time of year. So, if you have bought a hanging basket this year it may well need supplementary watering depending on its aspect.
Parks and Open Spaces
Following our consultation, we are very pleased to have now installed a new mini timber trail at Arlebury Park playground. Primarily for the younger children, we really hope they enjoy the challenge. All playgrounds have now had their annual play inspections. The Play Inspection Company organised by Winchester City Council undertake this. Trained council staff also undertake weekly inspections. The annual play inspection reports are available on our website. Thank-you for your patience while we have had
to close the mound at Stratton Bates for returfing. We hope this will be the final time.
Youth Engagement Survey about Alresford Parks
Over the last few months, the Council have conducted surveys, both face to face and online, with young people in Alresford to gather their views on facilities in our parks. This includes how they currently use the parks and their thoughts on improvements for the future. We were very pleased to have around 120 completed surveys, with respondents ranging in age from 11 to 18. A number of priorities were identified for the future from the surveys, with the top request being a basketball court/ Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and second, the creation of more outdoor meeting spaces. The Council will start to consider the viability of these options, including locations and costings and how we might be able to move forward. We are very grateful to all those who took part.
New Allotments update
Ecological surveys at the new allotment site have been going on since March. The site has now recovered from its initial clearance and a variety of wildlife has been found that we need to be mindful of, including slow worms, viviparous lizards and a large female grass snake. There are also several different butterfly species along with a water shrew which was found along the watercress bank. Creation of allotments at this site is being undertaken under the guidance of an ecologist to ensure the correct habitats continue to be maintained.
The next phase of work is a redrawing of the layout of the allotments, to determine how many and where plots can be fitted in, now that we have an accurate understanding of the topography of the site and the numbers and locations of reptiles and other wildlife. We then need to get water to the site, rotavate and mark out the site.
Litter
Our litter picker does a wonderful job keeping the parks clean and tidy. As summer is here and most of you will be spending more time outside, please remember to use the town litter bins, especially in the recreation grounds.
There have been several complaints of dog mess around the town particularly along The Avenue. Remember to always clean up after your dog. It is antisocial to other pedestrians if left. Never light BBQs in the recreation grounds to prevent danger of fire to people and wildlife. Worryingly a large amount of smashed glass has been found in the skateboard area of Arlebury Park.
Thank-you for keeping our town clean.

Winchester was the winner in 38 minutes 36 seconds with Caroline Brown from Liss Runners and Karla Borland, also from Winchester, coming in second and third. The threatened thunderstorms stayed away and the runners encountered hot sunshine and melting humidity. Harry Smith of City of Salisbury Athletics Club won in an impressive 32 minutes 32 seconds, closely followed by Fred Slemeck and Andy Greenleaf both of Winchester and District Athletics Club. The winners received hampers of local goodies put together by the Arlebury Cafe which also baked hundreds of delicious cookies for the event. Avoiding imported medals and T shirts every runner received a UK sourced wooden medal sponsored by Winchester Auto Barn and watercress from The Watercress Company.
