COMMUNITY / CHURCHES Remembrance Sunday at St John’s

St John's Church, Alresford Lighting Up Alresford for Christmas

Nativity Story Hunt

From December 1st 2020, we are inviting everyone in Alresford to take part in our plan to share the Christmas Story around Alresford in a fun and original way. The plan is for anyone who would like to, to provide a lighted display in their windows, gardens or any area easily viewed by those passing. You can produce anything, from a simple image or collage to a more adventurous 3-D tableau or figures depicting any part of the Nativity story. For instance: Angels, shepherds, cribs, sheep, kings, stars, donkeys, stables, inn-keepers, Bethlehem in any shape or form, etc. Imagination and creativity are welcome!

We have been advised that Remembrance Day ceremonies this year should not take place in the normal way. Therefore, there will be no public ceremony at St John’s or at the war memorial. Instead, at 10:45 on Sunday 8th November we will have a short act of remembrance at the war memorial with key representatives from our community and we are hoping to be able to livestream this. We realise that this is a very difficult request to ask of our community who wish to express their gratitude for those who have fallen in the service of our nation but we are sure you will fully understand why this decision has been necessary for this year. The British Legion are encouraging as many people as possible to download and print a poppy to place in their window. It would be lovely if we could join this initiative and have poppies displayed in many of the windows in our community. There will also be links on the St John’s website www. arlevalleychurches.org.uk and Facebook page www.facebook.com/ stjohnsAlresford to different ways in which we are able to remember at home this year. You will also be able to access the live streaming from these links.

Butser Ancient Farm - Online stories. Elemental Dark Ages with Jason Buck and Dawn Nelson

Entry to this activity is free for everyone.

So why is this a Hunt? We want to produce an entry sheet so that as you go around Alresford you can mark the displays you have seen including those in the windows of businesses in the centre of Alresford. Those who find the most will receive a small prize.

Entry Forms to take part by having a display and another to enter the Hunt will be available from Six West and Oakleaf Stationary, at either end of West Street. Display Entries by November 15th please. Alternatively you can email events@stjohnsalresford.org.uk to register your display and you will be able to download a Hunt entry form from St John's Facebook page or from the Benefice website, www.arlevalleychurches.org.uk.

Display help If you feel creative, but don't have a suitable place for it, or you have a great space, but feel that you lack creativity, then let us know and we will try to pair you up, socially distanced, of course.

Yet the proof of God’s amazing love is this: that it was while we were sinners that Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 (J. B. Phillips)

Online stories: Elemental Dark Ages: Stories from Nature with Jason Buck and Dawn Nelson Saturday 28th November 2020, 7:00 – 8:30pm £10 per household ticket (plus booking fee). Stories, told live, online to your phone, computer or smart TV. Jason Buck Storyteller and DD Storyteller join up for this collaboration, with stories from the dark ages of European and British culture, through the lens of the four elements of nature of Earth, Air, Fire and Water! All profits from this show go towards supporting Butser Ancient Farm, the experimental archaeology projects, Iron age round houses, Neolithic dwellings and the rare breed animals.

PROPERTY / COMMUNITY The Country House Company - Why have your property Fully Managed?

Kate Porter, Head of Sales

Kate Morton, Head of Lettings

Marishelle Butler, Head of Property Management

As a landlord, why have your property Fully Managed? So that you will know that your property is safety compliant, being checked regularly and that there is a point of contact for the tenant. In the past 5 years there have been over 150 new regulations affecting landlords and in some cases breaches of these regulations carry a criminal record or prison sentence. These regulations change quickly, and particularly during the current crisis. If your property is Fully Managed your property manager will be updating you and ensuring that all safety checks are complete including electrical, gas, legionella and smoke and carbon monoxide testing. Money is saved if systems and appliances are regularly serviced. If a property is Fully Managed then we would ensure that boilers and Agas are serviced, chimneys swept, oil tanks filled, septic tanks emptied, alarms serviced, plus more. A Fully Managed property will be inspected at regular intervals. You will know that the tenant is looking after the property and complying with the terms of the tenancy agreement. The landlord and tenant will be able to contact us at any time to report

YOUR

COMMUNITY Hampshire Fare Roadshow

Hampshire Fare says: “This is such a positive! LEADER funding has enabled us to acquire our own liveried van. This is massively beneficial to the organisation as it means we will be singing the praises of our members wherever we go!” Due to this year’s pandemic and accompanying lockdown restrictions, the county’s events programme has suffered. However, this liveried van will ensure Hampshire Fare is transport-ready for events in 2021, as well as allowing the development of a new flexible Hampshire Fare Roadshow.

After securing funding from the Loddon & Test LEADER Programme, Hampshire Fare have acquired a liveried van with the intention of launching the Hampshire Fare Roadshow, to help champion Hampshire’s finest local food, drink and craft producers. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager,

Tracy Nash explains: “It is fantastic that securing the liveried van and establishing the Roadshow coincides with Hampshire Fare’s 30th anniversary next year. Programme funding includes the provision of collateral such as pop-up gazebo and boards portraying some of our members’ stories. Altogether this will allow the development of a Hampshire Fare Roadshow going forwards, enabling us to do our best to promote all of our members’ fantastic produce and places to buy, eat and stay in the region. It will help us market

Citizens Advice - Winchester District Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, shares her advice on Universal Credit.

Q A

I’ve recently signed up to Universal Credit after I was made redundant. I’m looking for a new job but is there more I need to do to ensure I keep getting Universal Credit?

When you apply for Universal Credit you’ll agree a Claimant Commitment with your work coach. A Claimant Commitment is a record of the responsibilities that you have accepted in order to receive Universal Credit payments. Your claimant commitment will be updated each time you see your work coach. When you agree to your Claimant Commitment you will be put into one of four work-related activity groups (sometimes called “conditionality” groups). These set out the tasks you’re expected to complete in order to receive your full benefit payment. You can check which group you’re in by logging into your Universal Credit account online and checking your Claimant Commitment. If you’re not online, you will have been provided with a paper copy of

Hampshire as a staycation experience.” As the project is all about supporting the local economy and promoting local businesses, Hampshire Fare also bought locally: the VW Caddy van was supplied by Breeze Volkswagen Van Centre Southampton and liveried by Extreme Signs Ltd in Totton. Mike Wright, Chairman, Hampshire Fare, adds: “This is yet another example of how much we want to support our members and promote Hampshire’s great local products. We are a proactive membership organisation that always looks for a better way to do things.” Robert Benford, Chairman of the Loddon & Test LEADER Local Acton Group, comments: “We are delighted to have been able to help Hampshire Fare with a capital grant for this project. This is one of the last grants we can give, as the LEADER programme is ending with Brexit. Over the past five years we have helped 62 businesses in the area to the tune of £2,250,000. This funding has been of great value to the local economy, so we do hope the Government will consider establishing a similar scheme moving forward.”

your Claimant Commitment. This will tell you which group you’re in and what tasks you'll have to do regularly to get Universal Credit. These tasks could include writing your CV, signing up for job alerts or applying for vacancies. In order to show how you have completed the to-do list set out in your Claimant Commitment, you should keep a record of the tasks you’ve completed and how long they took in your Universal Credit online journal, or in a diary if you’re not online. Some claimants, mainly those who have applied for Universal Credit for the first time since the outbreak of COVID-19, may not have a Claimant Commitment yet. Those who claimed before the outbreak, will have had their Claimant Commitment suspended during the outbreak and had no work-related requirements imposed. From 1 July The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has said it will be calling all claimants to help them to prepare for work, so people should expect to be contacted to set up the Claimant Commitment. They do not need to contact the Department for Work and Pensions in the meantime. The DWP has said that they will take a common-sense approach to work-related requirements and that those who are shielding, have childcare responsibilities because of COVID restrictions, etc. will have their Claimant Commitment tailored to reflect their circumstances. If you have a query about claiming Universal Credit you can contact Citizens Advice Winchester District on 0300 330 2183 or email them at advice@cawinchesterdistrict.org.uk

Our next Exhibition is Metamorphosis By David Pattenden of Midhurst Art Society. David is fascinated with the passage of time, the transience of things, the slow, inexorable metamorphosis of one thing into another and the joy of existence in the world. He finds real beauty in abandoned things - items that were once needed, designed, coveted, that have been discarded and now live in quiet melancholy as they slowly fade away, all the energy that we put into them now gone. David also loves butterflies and moths, their extraordinary metamorphosis from one form to another, and their exquisite colours and patterns which we only ever see in brief, fleeting moments.

The paintings and drawings try to reflect these ideas and feelings, the fact that we are all part of the world, all travel through it in time, and, like the butterfly, find and give joy by just existing. The exhibition will be on until the5th December and is FREE The Allen Gallery Café is now open indoors again with table service only and a choice of disposable cups/plates or crockery and our delicious cakes! A Tea Time Tale © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2020 WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM

T

hey turned the corner and the Georgian former vicarage came into view, just as dusk was gathering late on a November afternoon. “Your great aunt’s house is lovely “ he observed. “Yes – isn’t it” she agreed. The gardens were in their last autumn gasp of glory; Michaelmas daisies gave a splash of colour and the love-in-a-mist seed heads added decorative texture. The gardener leaned on his rake and puffed on his pipe. He touched the brim of his hat as they passed. A quintessential English scene. Auntie was a good host. Egg and cress sandwiches, sausage rolls, home-made scones with clotted cream and jam - and a cup of tea from the bone china service. Replete, they sat back and chatted about the weather; balmy for the time of year and the frosts were late in coming. Finally, she broached the subject of ‘the story’. “So Auntie – please will you tell it to him.” “Tell what to him?” Auntie feigned puzzlement. “Oh Auntie – you know, the family ghost story. You’ve got the biggest sceptic here to convert.” He rolled his eyes. “I’m afraid so. I just think that ghosts are the product of credulous people of a certain fanciful disposition. But I love a good yarn, so please continue.” Auntie showed a certain reluctance, but sighed and started to speak. “Our family hasn’t always been well off. I grew up in a keeper’s cottage in the woods. One afternoon we had a visit from some relatives of my mother that I had never met. We had tea. Not the scones and cream type, more fruit cake and bread and dripping, as I recall. Anyway, their daughter, who was about five years old, kept looking at the window. Probably about this time of year or maybe December, because it was dark outside already and only five o’clock or so – but she kept going up to the glass pane and looking out. “There’s someone outside” she said. “Well, we lived in the middle of the estate, so there shouldn’t have been anyone about. My father was instantly alert. Poachers, you see. He immediately went outside and looked around but couldn’t see anyone. When he came back in, the little girl pointed to the window again and said “But he’s just there – it’s a little boy. “ My mother went deathly pale, but my dad, he went out, this time with a lamp and we saw him appear at the window. “There’s no-one there Mum.” He reassured my mother when he returned.

12

But the girl, she persisted “The little boy, I think he wants to come in.” My mother said “What does he look like?” and the child replied “he’s got white hair.” My parents looked at each other and my mother put her hand over her mouth and left the room. When she came back in, she had a photograph which she showed to the young child. “Yes, him. But he’s gone away now.” I remember the little girl sounded sad. My parents ushered the other adults out into the kitchen where they had a whispered conversation, before they took their daughter and left. I badly wanted to see that picture, but it took a few days of pestering before my parents sat me down and explained. I’d had an older brother that I never knew about, that my parents never talked about. He’d died of diphtheria when I was just a baby - and the black and white photograph was of him. He had blonde hair.” Auntie finished her story. “But of course, it was all such a long time ago and your memory may be playing tricks. I’m afraid I still don’t believe in ghosts. It is, forgive me for saying, complete and utter nonsense. A good story ‘though and you do tell it well, Auntie. I expect you’ve had a lot of practice..” He was complimentary and patronising all at once. “Thank you for the wonderful tea and extra entertainment, but we’d better get going – miss the traffic.” She and her great Aunt exchanged knowing smiles and shrugged their shoulders. They kissed goodbye with promises not to leave it so long next time. As he bent to kiss her wrinkled cheek the old lady said to him “Oh, did you happen to see Morris, my gardener, on your way in?” He nodded. “Old boy raking the leaves. Hat and pipe?” “That’s him. He does like to materialise for visitors.” He frowned slightly “materialise – as in he only does any work when he’s got an audience? Perhaps you should get yourself a new gardener.” “Yes, well of course I had to.” Auntie winked at her great niece who smiled back. His frown had deepened “Had to?” Both women were laughing now, but he still didn’t get the joke. Auntie laid a gentle hand on his arm as she said quietly “Yes. You see, Morris has been dead these thirty years.” Footnote: One of these ghost stories is true.

Alresford Surgery News Adult Flu Clinics Our flu clinics are well under way and operating safely. However, you are probably aware that, like all other surgeries, we are running short of vaccine as the uptake this year has been well beyond normal levels. The Government has bought all spare stock, but at the time of writing (early October) we do not have information of when or how that stock will be made available to us. This is a rapidly changing situation for all of us. Please bear with us if you have not been able to book an appointment or we have to postpone your appointment. We will endeavour to ensure all eligible patients are vaccinated either by ourselves or by the local pharmacies. Meanwhile could we remind you to wear a face covering and wear a short sleeved shirt or top when you come for your flu jab. Patients who are aged 50-64 year old – Please do not call the surgery with enquiries, we expect to contact you later when the at risk patients have been vaccinated. Child Flu Clinics We have now written to parents whose children are aged 2-3 (born 1.9.2016 – 31.8.2018) or aged 4-17 and have a condition which puts them at greater risk if they get flu. Please ensure you book an appointment for child to receive their flu vaccination. Children in years R-7 will be vaccinated in school by Schools Health. Covid testing As well as COVID, common colds are also in circulation. This video contains some useful information about when to get a COVID test and how to tell if your symptoms are likely to be a cold: https://www.bbc. co.uk/news/av/health-54182329 If you have the following symptoms you need to get a test; • a high temperature • a new, continuous cough • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste To request a test visit; https://self-referral.test-for-coronavirus.service. gov.uk/antigen/name . Sadly GP’s are unable to access tests on behalf of patients. If you cannot get a test straight away, or the location or time are not convenient, try again in a few hours. Children & parents – Covid Now that children have returned to school it is important that parents & carers are able to access the right support if their child becomes unwell and that schools are able to signpost parents and carers to the appropriate sources of help. GP’s are unable to provide individual risk assessments, letters or notes that a child is Covid-19 free or provide evidence of a child that has been told to self-isolate. Should your child become unwell please see the following information: Childhood illnesses If a child is unwell with other symptoms such as sore throat, earache, stomach ache, runny nose, skin rashes, or a winter related illness such as norovirus with vomiting and diarrhoea, then parents are advised to check NHS 111 online health condition advice – is my child too ill to go to school, and contact their local pharmacy or GP if they need further help. https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/is-my-child-too-illfor-school/ NHS 111 phoneline should only be used for an urgent medical problem where parents or carers are unsure what to do. If a child is too ill to

16

attend school, the parent or carer should advise the school as per normal and arrange to care for the child at home until they are well enough to return. For schools there is also government guidelines that say when a child should be kept off school and when they shouldn't which can be accessed via: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/healthprotection-in-schools-and-other-childcare-facilities/chapter-9managing-specific-infectious-diseases . Urgent & Emergency Care The following link explains how to access urgent assistance for a child: https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/nhs-services/urgent-andemergency-care/. The advice as always is to call 999 if it is a medical emergency - when someone is seriously ill or injured, or their life is at risk. Healthier Together It can be extremely stressful when your child is unwell. We know that there is a huge amount of information available at your fingertips, but finding something that provides clear and accurate information is not always easy! The resources on the Healthier Together website have been developed in partnership between parents and healthcare professionals from across Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. You'll find clear information on common childhood illnesses, including advice on what 'red-flag' signs to look out for, where to seek help if required, what you should do to keep your child comfortable and how long your child's symptoms are likely to last. https://what0-18.nhs.uk/ they also have a whole section on Covid-19.

Biodynamic craniosacral therapy The Biodynamic craniosacral therapy in my opinion is a highly skilled way of listening to the human body. The therapist’s gentle contact at different places in the body encourages natural adjustments from within the body’s own resources. During the therapy, subtle movements in the body’s fluid and tissue are being listened for and the natural movement towards stillness and deep healing is initiated. The human body being more than 70% water has a certain rhythmic movement to its body’s fluids which is inherited at a very early stages of life, any disruption through symptoms of a stressful lifestyle, trauma, accidents/ injuries can have a long lasting impact on a psychological and physical state of the body. A birth experience is a powerful example and can benefit greatly from Craniosacral and osteopathic work. Typical new-borns and baby symptoms (colic reflux and pinched nerve irritation) can be easily dealt with. The therapy’s simplicity creates a safe space for traumatic experiences to emerge and resolve smoothly without being overwhelming or re-stimulating. The therapists experience, touch and presence are the key components in creating a deep sense of safety and capacity to heal from within in a client led and paced approach. I have worked as an Organic and Biodynamic Gardner in India and England for many years now. I see working with nature as a real gift which helps us to relate to many aspects in our life. It has been my resource, and I consider myself very privileged to bring this humannature balance into this therapy for everyone to benefit from. Stanly Sugumar B.C.S.T Email: stancranio@gmail.com

Beautiful Art to Brighten up this Autumn gallery – the largest in Hampshire – artwork from a broad pool of artists, both emerging and well established, across a wide variety of subjects, genres and media, can be exhibited side by side so there’s something to suit all tastes and budgets.

A life-affirming landscape reminiscent of happier days, a still life that makes you stop and stare, an exquisite portrait…. What better way to distract from these changing times than with some beautiful art? At the Hampshire Art Autumn Show, which runs from the 6th November - 12th December 11am-4pm at The Old Grain Barn, Goodworth Clatford, there’s plenty to inspire with this stunning new collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics from over 60 British and European artists.

Nadia Waterfield Fine Art has become synonymous with exhibitions which showcase a vast array of eclectic, well-chosen contemporary art all under one roof. Due to the sheer size of this elegant, impressive

18

All of Nadia Waterfield Fine Art shows are kept vibrant, fresh and relevant as Nadia, an artist herself, handpicks each piece from artists around the country. This exciting new Autumn Show is no different with a dazzling choice of over 250 original artworks exhibited in the gallery and online.

However nothing beats seeing art ‘in the flesh’ to properly catch the essence of a piece and fortunately due to the size of the Stockbridge gallery, distancing is made easy. Groups of up to six can happily and safely peruse the wonderful paintings, sculptures and ceramics while enjoying the welcoming atmosphere with cosy fires and coffee to hand. Parking is ample and the surrounding countryside is great for walking. All safety guidelines are diligently adhered to.

If you want to see more of Nadia Waterfield Fine Art and are in the area, pop in to our Bruton gallery which has an exciting new collaboration with well-known vintage brand Cabbages and Roses, alongside running a solo show by talented Norfolk artist and designer Belynda Sharples from 12th November to 5th December. The gallery is open Tuesday Friday 10am-4pm; Saturday 10am-4pm.

If you would like a private tour of the Hampshire Art Autumn Show then please arrange a viewing by appointment. Nadia Waterfield Fine Art T: 07717 833999 www.nadiawaterfieldfineart.com

The Farm Shop Reinvented For 2020 A family farm shop in the heart of the Meon Valley has relaunched after a £60,000 refurbishment, to provide more choice while cutting back on plastics and packaging to improve its environmental credentials. Westlands Farm Shop at Pricketts Hill, Wickham, has expanded into its former tea room to create space for a delicatessen, self-serve refill stations and more room for fruit and veg from the farm. Meon Valley MP Flick Drummond cut the ribbon to officially launch the refurbished farm shop - and then did some of her own shopping while she was visiting. Shoppers are encouraged to refill bottles from a fresh milk vending machine and fill their own containers with a wide range of dried foods and cereals from refill stations. Westlands has also teamed up with family-run company ‘Fill’ which supplies no-waste biodegradable and environmentally responsible cleaning products for people with their own containers. Westlands will continue to sell its own hand-reared free-range beef and lamb, along with locally sourced free-range game, pork, seasonal meats, fresh bread, cheese, wine and gifts. Home-grown strawberries and raspberries produced on the farm nine months of the year will still be available, too. In addition, a new entrance to the shop has been created as part of the works to enable social distancing and to keep the shopping environment as safe as it can be. Change Of A Dress A Brand New Independent Boutique Dress Agency in Romsey

W

e are very pleased and excited to be opening Romsey’s only independent, boutique clothes agency in the heart of the fashion district of Romsey in Bell Street.

In these Covid times when many stores are sadly closing, we are delighted to be able to offer the discerning shopper of Romsey the opportunity to buy ethically and sustainably with our huge range of nearly new clothing and also to sell unwanted items of clothing and accessories on a 50/50 basis.

Ali Galvin, formerly of The Clothes Line Dress Agency in Winchester, has joined Simon Wills to create this new buying and selling experience. She has 27 years of experience in this line of business and together they have created a stylish, elegant store. Recycling and sustainability is at the heart of the ethics of a clothes agency and this is certainly what Change of A Dress is all about. In addition to the Dress Agency, The Frock Shop which operates within Change of A Dress, specialises in renting exquisite evening wear and prom dresses. The opening was very well supported by many local people including the future Lady Mayor of Romsey Karen Dunleavey and the very famous local Lawrie McMenemy - we are grateful to them all. Ali and The Team look forward to welcoming you. www.changeofadress.co.uk 23 Bell Street, Romsey, SO51 8GY

COMMUNITY Alresford Rotary News Virtual Guy Fawkes Day The Alresford torchlit procession, bonfire and fireworks display is an annual community event raising monies to support local charities and Rotary projects around the world but, as previously reported, common sense and the consequences of the Covid 19 pandemic have led to its cancellation this year but all is not lost!

Alresford Rotary has created a virtual display, a compilation of previous spectacular fireworks displays from Alresford and all around the world. Visit www.alresfordrotary.co.uk to view the video together with other informative videos about home fireworks safety and the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. Christmas Trees With great regret Alresford Rotary has very reluctantly come to the decision not to hold its annual early December sale of Christmas trees

Winchester Mayor visits Alresford

this year as, recognizing its responsibilities to the safety of the community, it has been unable to find a solution that would be completely Covid secure. On behalf of Alresford Rotary its President Jonathan Read says “It has been a really tough call as we felt Rotary and the town really needed a bit of Christmas spirit at this difficult time and our sale is always part of that. However, we could not overlook the fact that this virus is an invisible villain which is attacking people of all ages especially when they are gathering together. We have erred on the side of great caution and hope people will understand. We shall look forward to better times for everyone in 2021 and a bumper traditional Christmas Tree Sale next year”. End Polio Now In late August the World Health Organization declared Africa to be free of the virus that causes Polio, a landmark in a decades-long campaign to eradicate the disease around the world. Polio was endemic around the world until a vaccine was found in the 1950’s and in 1988 when there were 350,000 cases globally the World Health Organization, UNICEF and Rotary International launched the worldwide eradication campaign. In 1996 there were 70,000 cases in Africa alone. Thanks to

Lighting up Alresford – December Anyone who would like to get involved to assist please do let us know. Email info@ alresfordchamber.co.uk or contact a member of the PIGS. The dates are as below

a global effort over 30 years including financial contributions of some £675 million from Rotary International and substantial contributions from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation the only cases of Polio reported in the first eight months of this year have been 87 in Afghanistan and Pakistan. With your support Alresford Rotary is proud to have played and to continue to play a small part in helping the global efforts to eliminate Polio for good. Looking ahead The local community has made and continues to make a real difference throughout the Covid 19 pandemic but its skills and enthusiasm are still very much needed. At Rotary we have a unique position of being rooted in the community but with a global outlook, ready to tackle challenges at home and abroad. By joining or working with Rotary you can challenge your volunteering energy into projects which transform lives and make a difference locally and internationally. To find out more please contact us by email rotaryalresford@gmail.com.

ranquil, enchanting, inspiring and a place to replenish the soul The South Downs has always had these special qualities, but the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to amplify the value of having a National Park on our doorstep. Whether you were walking in the forest, running along one of the many rights of way, or riding your horse through quiet country lanes, it was hard not to pinch yourself during these past few difficult months and remind yourself that we’re very lucky to live in this wondrously beautiful, sun-kissed corner of England. The importance of the South Downs National Park as a breathing space and part of a network of “natural health service” providers has been increasing in recent years.

and affects more than one in four of the population at any time. It’s a stark statistic that is being taken really seriously by National Parks and is driving us to develop new health and wellbeing strategies that complement our wonderful NHS. “The key thing is we know it does work. Being outside and active with natural sunlight releases serotonin and helps us to feel less stressed. Research shows that just being in nature can have a positive impact on mental and physical health and can enhance one’s mood.”

Tanquil, enchanting, inspiring and a place to replenish the soul

And, with mental health and wellness coming into sharper focus during the pandemic, the National Park Authority is working with a variety of partners to develop opportunities for people to benefit from connecting with the natural world. One of the priorities is to develop more “green prescribing” – working with health and social care providers to encourage people to make the most of the National Park. It could be as simple as a weekly walk in the National Park, or taking part in an arts class inspired by the picturesque landscape. A COVID-19 Recovery Fund was also launched earlier this year and a raft of community projects are set to be benefit from funding that will help connect communities to the National Park. “I think many people across all walks of life have found 2020 a difficult and stressful year as they’ve been balancing work, childcare and the effects of lockdown,” says Kate Drake, Health and Wellbeing Officer for the National Park, who was given the newly-created role last year. Kate Drake soaking up the amazing views at Truleigh Hill “We’ve certainly seen a renewed wave of interest in connecting with nature and getting out and just enjoying fresh air and a beautiful view. It’s been a real ‘pick-me-up’ for so many people and we’ve certainly seen that from the feedback we’ve had. “Mental illness accounts for 23 per cent of all ill-health in England

34

As part of the lottery-funded Heathlands Reunited project, the National Park recently helped to launch an educational sculpture trail, with seven stone carvings that tell the stories of the heritage and wildlife of the heaths. There’s a field cricket, sand lizard and even an uplifting quote from the poet Tennyson! Families and walkers are being encouraged to download the walk leaflet this autumn and explore the trail.

Kate adds: “We know people have enjoyed the benefits of the outdoors and we’re keen that they continue to reap the benefits during the autumn and winter. As the days shorten, it can be very easy to become inactive. With more people working from home, it’s become even more important to take breaks away from the screen or even take a 30-minute walk at lunchtime. “I would encourage people to start small. Perhaps go for an hour long gentle walk on a Saturday afternoon. Take notice of the beauty around you, look at the trees, listen to the birds and look up at the sky and soak up the views on the horizon. These are all simple, free things that nature has to offer us and you’ll be surprised by how uplifted you feel!” Kate says she’s really proud to be working for the National Park as it marks its 10th birthday this year. She adds: “We live in one of the busiest parts of the UK. So what makes the South Downs National Park so special for me is its ability to provide an outlet for escape, adventure, enjoyment, inspiration and reflection. And those stunning views never get boring!” www.southdowns.gov.uk

THE ART OF FIRE Enjoy the Autumn Festivities with a warming Fire Pit 'The Lotus' Cast aluminium Firepit £1275

Impressions of Alresford A (MAINLY) LITERARY QUIZ 1.

“Alresford or Odiham too small . . .” Who thought her physically large father would come to this conclusion when choosing where to live in Hampshire?

2. Which journalist born in Farnham referred to “Alresford, which is a nice little town in itself, but which presents a singularly beautiful view from the last little hill coming from Abbotson” [Abbotstone]? 3.

His first job was as a farm labourer and he was later known as a strong advocate of Swedish turnips. Travelling with his son, “not being able to find a room to our liking” in Alresford, they went on to pass the night in Easton. Who was he?

4.

Towards the end of her “Great Journey to Newcastle and Cornwall”, this lady, riding her horse side-saddle was, for the first time, “shott off his neck upon the bank” a little before Alresford. What is the name of the famous explorer who is a present-day member of her family?

5.

His best-known literary work describes life on a desert island, but he considered Alresford “remarkable for this: that although it had no great trade, and particularly very little, if any, manufactures, yet there was no collection in the town for the poor, nor any poor low enough to take alms of the parish”. Who was he?

William Cobbett, 17 November 1822. S. E. Buckley [ed.] Selections from Cobbett’s ‘Rural Rides’ (1950) p. 87.

3.

“When we got to Alresford it was nearly dark, and not being able to find a room to our liking, we resolved to go, though in the dark, to Easton, a village about six miles from Alresford down by the side of the Hichen river”.

William Cobbett, 29 October 1825. S. E. Buckley [ed.] Selections from Cobbett’s ‘Rural Rides’ (1950) p. 185.

4.

“. . . a little before I came to Alresford forceing my horse out of the hollow way his feete failed, and he could noe ways recover himself and so I was shott off his neck upon the bank, but noe harm I bless God”

6.

“. . . sloping downhill, is one of the best streets in Hampshire . . .”. Which refugee, exploring the country in a car driven by his wife, wrote this, and of which street?

7. Which author and dramatist, born in Alresford in 1787, was given a tenth birthday present of a ticket in the Irish Lottery which went on to win a £20,000 prize? 8.

“NEW ALRESFORD CHURCH . . . has been justly characterized as ‘more commodious than handsome’.” Where did this comment appear?

9.

Very publicly arrested in Manchester in 1819, this radical speaker began his writing career while in prison. He died at Alresford on 15 February 1835, having suffered a stroke the previous month. Who was he?

10. “. . . and that is equally true of the River Arle above Alresford. I remember these waters as wonderful to fish, and think that I had more delight out of them than I’ve had from all the magnificence of the Itchen’s main stream.” Who was this enthusiastic angler, loather of watercress and writer of a weekly column about dogs and cats in The News of the World?

Answers 1.

“Clementine used to imagine him trying on different towns for size, like a pair of combinations, before settling for [fictional] Aldringham. London or Birmingham, too big, they flapped around him in empty folds that he could never hope to fill. Alresford or Odiham, too small . . .”

Marika Cobbold The Purveyor of Enchantment (1996), p. 64.

2.

“. . . down to Abbotson, and over some pretty green hills to Alresford, which is a nice little town of itself, but which presents a singularly beautiful view from the last little hill coming from Abbotson”

Celia Fiennes, “From Newton Toney through Windsor to London”, part of “My Great Journey to Newcastle and Cornwall in 1698”. Between 1682-1712 she covered most of England, riding sidesaddle. This was the only occasion upon which she was thrown from her horse, owing to “rains . . . making the wayes very slippery”. Christopher Morris [ed.] The Illustrated Journeys of Celia Fiennes c.1682-c.1712 (1982) p. 215. The explorer Ranulph Fiennes is a present-day member of the family. 5. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), A Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain, 1724-6, 3 vols. [Edited Pat Rogers] (1986), 187. Defoe considered that the Alresford population’s good fortune “is what I do not think can be said of any town in England besides”. 6. “BROAD STREET, sloping gently downhill, is one of the best streets in Hampshire, and broad indeed since the demolition of the market hall and shambles

38

which occupied its middle until the early C19” “New Alresford: Perambulation” in Ballen, Crook, Hubbock & Pevsner Hampshire: Winchester and the North, [The Buildings of England], (2010), p. 409. Pevsner was a refugee from the Nazis in the 1930s. His opinion has been retained through the many editions of this renowned architectural survey.

7.

Mary Russell Mitford (1787-1855), author and dramatist, born at 27 Broad Street, and now commemorated there by a plaque. For her tenth birthday her father gave her an Irish Lottery ticket which won £20,000, the equivalent of more than two million pounds today. She herself had chosen the number 2224, adding up to her age.

8. “NEW ALRESFORD CHURCH was rebuilt after the fire in 1689, and has been justly characterized as ‘more commodious than handsome’.”

Black’s Guide to Hampshire, 11th edn. (1890), p. 68.

9.

Henry “Orator” Hunt, radical speaker (1773-1835), principal spokesman at the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, for which he was imprisoned. He suffered a stroke while on business at Alresford and died on 15 February 1835.

10. “The waters below Bishopstoke are no longer trout waters, and that is equally true of the waters of the river Arle above Alresford. I remember these waters as wonderful to fish, and think that I had more delight out of them than I’ve had from all the magnificence of the Itchen’s main stream. But, maybe, childhood’s memories colour the trout I took to give their fighting qualities an edge that was not really there. For now there are many areas of watercress bed, and I never did like watercress.”

Brian Vesey-FitzGerald “The Test” in E. Molony [ed.] Portraits of Rivers (1953), p. 250.

New Alresford Town Council members of Alresford Rotary Club who have repainted the tree guards in Broad Street. They have done a fantastic job, thank you.

Blooming marvellous Fantastic news. New Alresford has won Gold in this year’s South and South East in Bloom competition. In 2019, we were awarded silver gilt, so we’re delighted to go one better. Our thanks to businesses and homeowners who support the scheme. We’ve introduced new initiatives since last year’s competition to encourage greater biodiversity in our parks and open spaces, including new trees, hedges and wilder areas. We’ve offered planters to businesses to enhance the vibrant hanging baskets in the town. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who contributed to this success.

Around the town Our industrious councillors have continued to tidy up the town centre, with the greatly appreciated help of enthusiastic

42

Preparations for winter are in hand. The forty salt bins around the town have been checked and any damage reported to Hampshire County Council. Repairs and cleaning of the bus shelters has taken place, together with the bins and signage in the town centre. Council owned benches will be repaired then cleaned and treated. The concrete bins in Arlebury Park and Sun Hill Recreation Ground will be replaced with lidded units. The Arle Valley and Millennium Trail Boards have been maintained and the faded Perspex coverings have been renewed. We welcome the positive steps to encourage greener ways to access the town with the addition of eight more bike racks in Broad Street, another four will be added in the near future.

Remembrance Day This year to commemorate Remembrance Day, we have ordered 40 large poppies which will be displayed on lamp posts in the town. The Remembrance Day service will take place on Sunday 8th November 2020 in accordance with government guidelines.

Entrances to the town Our thanks to Anita Wade for her dedication and commitment to Alresford. For many years she has planted and tended the floral displays at the three entrances to the town: East Street, Winchester Road and Jacklyn’s Lane. Each year she creates a summer and winter display. This year she will create a winter display for the planter in West Street. Sports round up Arlebury Park and Stratton Bates Rec continue to be at the centre of many sports clubs and activities. Alresford Town Football Club has changed hands and has teamed up with Southampton Women’s Football Club. They are keen to provide training opportunities for Alresford Youth Football Club. Alresford Town Rugby Club together with their long established and well supported junior section continue to thrive. There are also opportunities to play tennis (pay and play) or become a member of Alresford Tennis Club. If you prefer something gentler, then there is a petanque pitch and there is an opportunity to join in a game most Tuesday afternoons. Fly tipping Unfortunately, we’ve had more incidences of fly tipping: a

maggot infested wheelie bin was dumped in Arlebury Park and a pallet was fly tipped in the town; the second in recent months. We have had to pay to have them removed. Council office After a period of working from home due to the pandemic, all staff returned to the council office at Arlebury Recreation Centre. This proved to be a false dawn as government guidelines changed and we are working from home again! However, we are happy to answer your queries by email or phone. Our office hours are Monday to Friday 9 to 5pm. Unfortunately, we are unable to take bookings for the Lower Meeting Room at the present time. Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

LOCAL

GOVERNMENT Steve Brine M.P The NHS (locally and nationally) remains my priority. I’ve written about it countless times in FORUM MAGAZINE, the local press and in my own publications. Over the past decade I have sought to understand the local NHS and support what is in our best interests in line with clinical advice. Politicians do not design health services. As the old Winchester & Eastleigh Trust came together with Basingstoke, compromises were required – around the centralisation of services – when it came to urgent stroke care or acute orthopaedics for-instance.

and I remain of the view Winchester needs a District General Hospital with an emergency department and consultant-led maternity services.

It is a process which has otherwise passed by unnoticed and that is hardly surprising in the midst of a pandemic which is why I have said publicly, privately - and in the House of Commons - this is a strange time to seek major changes to the local NHS if your aim is to do so with a modicum of engagement and consent from the general public.

I know that’s challenging and the Trust want a clinical model that does best by us all but I would urge them to keep an open mind and not to give up on Winchester Hospital because we have not.

Nonetheless, Hampshire Together has produced a series of options upon which it plans to formally consult early next year and we should be clear that will pose some very difficult questions. There’s no question the Trust faces significant pressure to centralise certain services. Some of that external, around neonatal care forinstance, some of it not. I have consistently said this project, because it is part of the “40 new hospitals”, is primarily about replacing Basingstoke Hospital and the Prime Minister has confirmed that.

This Summer it got serious as Hampshire Hospitals embarked on the Hampshire

But we’re clear, as I promised last December, it will see “significant investment” at the RHCH

Go to hants.gov. uk and search Hampshire Perspectives for details or go direct to www.hampshirecc. researchfeedback.net The Covid-19 Local Engagement Board is headed up by the Leader of the County Council. It is advised by the Director of Public Health (DoPH), Simon Bryant. I attend the meetings as your Councillor and as Cabinet Member for Wellbeing at WCC. The local virus figures are low but rising steadily, so many events are being cancelled by organisers or by the DoPH. We want Christmas to be good for everyone- and I’m sure you’ll agree that a Covid-free Christmas present is the best present we can imagine right now. Meanwhile, click on the interactive map on

Together programme and I have worked incredibly hard, including writing to thousands of households at one point, to get constituents involved on future hospital services.

If you have an autistic person in your family, you’ll know the challenges of obtaining a diagnosis. At HCC Children’s Scrutiny we heard of the woeful progress of services for Autistic children which has been an ongoing problem for more years than I can remember. It’s a money issue- there just isn’t enough- and the funding needed didn’t happen because the General Election of 2019 ‘got in the way’. To an ‘old hand’ like me, this felt like groundhog day. I have asked for frequent updates until this is resolved, and was pleased that the NHS Director, newly appointed to carry this forward, agreed : this must improve. Hampshire Hospital options: Online consultations involving 1000 people were held through the Summer. Most people who attended the online events wanted the best healthcare wherever it was possible, the opportunity to ‘stay local’ for tests and checkups, excellent public transport links to all sites (including Alton and Andover) for staff, patients and visitors, and a better link between the NHS and social care. Options for care have been drawn up by HHFT. You will be able to comment on these in early 2021.

As I have said for a decade and more, I’ve never met a constituent who doesn’t want to be taken to the right place, to get the right treatment, when they’re acutely unwell and that requires services that give us the best chance should illness strike. But we should remember, a DGH is a delicate eco-system and the services it has are highly dependent on each other. Some change is manageable but we should be careful before taking too much away and, if the Trust plan to do so, they must be honest with residents what we gain and what will be taken away. It is up to the clinicians to make their case.

ANIMALS & PETS Alresford Pet Co at 4 West Street, Alresford New Management – New Vision

Our vision is to be the number one independent pet shop in Hampshire. It is a bold desire given the fierce competition and also that we are new to the pet industry, but we are determined to give it our best shot. Why not right?

Since re-opening the shop on Alresford’s West Street, our goal has been to tailor the products towards those our customers want, and we hope we are doing a satisfactory job. For example, we have brought in hedgehog food as the local support for hedgehogs has been quite astonishing. We believe we have made steady progress in the range of Dogs and wild birds food products. We recognise we have a small way to go for Cat products, Pet Bird products as well as for all the cute,

Hampshire Pet Fair

DoggyDooDah

The Alresford Pet shop at 4 West Street is under new ownership and we have pretty lofty ambitions.

Coming Next Year Saturday 26th June 2021. A fun packed event meeting lots of animals, reptiles, exotic pets, join in with a REALLY fun dog show & so much more. There will be plenty of pet retail therapy to keep everyone happy! Demonstrations, food & refreshments, get your dog photographed on the day, birds of prey, rescues & charities, ferret racing, children's entertainment & more... Hants Events were thrilled to be holding the Pet Fair this year at this prestigious, beautiful venue at Victoria House, Hamble, Southampton. A very pleasant surprise awaits you at Victoria House. This historic Grade II listed building is nestled on the edge of The Royal Victoria Country Park in Hamble which boasts beautiful views and extensive grounds.

In the weeks since re-decorating the shop, we quickly appreciated that local support is paramount - our backbone for the business. And we have enjoyed meeting the people of the town face to face and learning what customers wish to find in their local Pet Shop. In fact, at times it has been incredible how welcoming Alresford town has been. We have received constructive feedback from regular customers and lots of encouragement by all the surrounding businesses of Alresford. We have been made to feel very welcome and it has meant a lot to us, especially given the uncertain times we all sadly live in. Thank you, Alresford, for making us feel so welcome - we couldn’t have hoped for a better location.

small and fluffy animal products. Our plan in the new year, is to bring in fishing bait as well as live food for reptiles. So yes, for any feint hearted folk, there will be maggots and locusts and the like in our shop – albeit most likely tucked away safely in a back room fridge or storage area. Finally, and as everyone knows, the current 2020 climate is presenting some rather unique retail challenges. Access to shops for customers is one such challenge. In response to this, Alresford Pet Co is going online and accepting delivery requests. If this service is of interest, please visit our website www. alresfordpets.co.uk for further information. EDUCATION

It’s who we are Please forgive my lack of modesty, but I think there are many great things about teachers. One of the most fantastic is the way we demonstrate the values we want children to have through our own day to day conduct setting the right example. “The most important thing is to be kind,” we say, and it’s certainly true that all good teachers endeavour to be understanding and empathetic in everything that they do. “Work hard, play hard and love life,” we stress andyou’ve guessed it- enter any school worth its salt and you’ll see adults and children striving hard to be the best that they can be, enjoying their social times together and appreciating the school environment both inside and outside. And yet, there’s one particular area of a school’s existence that has always puzzled me. When teachers ask pupils to do anything creative- be it fine art, music composition, photography, dramatic performance or imaginative writing- we quite correctly point out the joint importance of originality and purpose. “Make sure you answer the question,” we say, “but do it in a way that makes your work different to everyone else’s. Make sure your work stands out from the rest of the pack.” But there’s one very important document- a key publication written by teachers- that is often as far away from

52

specially produced to appeal to young people who are about to embark upon their school careers.

original and purposeful as it is possible to get. I’m talking about the school prospectus. Every school has one, but they are all surprisingly uniform and similar, sure to contain myriad depictions of shining, smiling pupils in immaculate uniform and games kit. There will probably be a photo of a recent musical production, a different picture of a child chewing a pencil as they grapple with their maths, and- oh yes- there will almost certainly be a candid image of elation as someone runs over a finishing line somewhere, arms outstretched as they take the tape. These are ubiquitous visions of ubiquitous children in ubiquitous settings. Similar form; nigh-on-identical substance. So when I recently took on the headship of St Swithun’s Prep School in Winchester, I wanted to do something that was both different and purposeful; as appealing and useful as possible for the widest possible audience. It struck me that our raison d’être is essentially not to do with parents, but is everything to do with children and I wanted our new prospectus to reflect that. So that is how Alice and Sophia go to St Swithun’s Prep has been created. It’s our new picture book,

Perfectly sized for little hands, it tells the story of two siblings- one in Reception, one in Year Five- and a typical day in their lives at St Swithun’s: the reader follows them round as they go to assembly, enjoy their lessons, have lunch and break, go swimming and enjoy their clubs and music. It’s a bright and lively introduction to school life, written to be useful for all preschoolers (and their parents) whichever school they are going to join. Of course, it has greatest relevance for those children who will eventually attend St Swithun’s: they’ll be able to recognise their teachers, and anticipate their class’s daily routines, from the text and illustrations in the book. Fundamentally, it’s who we are. I very much hope the book can be read and enjoyed by as many children as possible; copies are available free of charge on request to storybook@stswithuns.com. There’s also an audio version (complete with page turn signals provided by the instrumental teachers in our music department) waiting to be accessed from the school website; instructions are in the book. Please request a copy, read it with your child and keep it at home. If it helps them to make the transition to school when the time comes, I will have done what I set out to do. I hope you enjoy reading it! Jonathan Brough is the head of Prep School at St Swithun’s, Alresford Road, Winchester.
