Wassail! Carols of Comfort and Joy Wednesday 6th December From 7.30pm Itchen Abbas Village Hall, SO21 1BQ

A Christmas concert to kick start your celebrations sung by the Itchen Valley Choir Conductor: Jane Bryant Accompanist: Lucinda Pillow WASSAIL: derives from Old Norse “ves heill”, to be in good health. It has accompanied English toast-making since the 12th century. In Old English it means a toast or salutation at festivities which included drinking spiced beer or mulled wine, the singing of Christmas carols, going from house to house singing, and drinking the health of someone at a wassail celebration. The Itchen Valley Choir will be celebrating this coming Christmas season by singing “Wassail! Carols of Comfort and Joy” arranged by Alexander L’Estrange, a young English composer well-known for his choral works. These carols are uplifting folk-inspired Christmas songs exploring both sacred and secular aspects of the festive season. Come along and join in, or just come and enjoy the atmosphere. Tickets £10

Hellards acquires LRF Lettings

Hellards are delighted to announce their recent acquisition of LRF Lettings on the retirement of the owner, Linda Frost. Linda is entrusting her business to Hellards, who intend to take the business forward on a similar footing, with a smooth handover of the existing tenancies. Landlords and tenants should experience little, if any, disruption during the process. Linda worked for Tony Marshall at Keats Marshall Bendall for a number of years, and became well-known in the Alresford area for offering a bespoke, personal service to landlords. After Tony sold the business, Linda set up on her own, with LRF Lettings quickly building a solid and trusted reputation in the local area. Hellards has enjoyed a good working relationship with Linda over recent years, in part because of the shared ethical principles on which both companies were founded; namely a promise to look after clients' best interests at all times.

T: 01962 736333 lettings@hellards.co.uk www.hellards.co.uk

Ian Woodhouse-Smith, Lettings Manager for Hellards, commented “We would like to congratulate Linda and wish her all the very best for her retirement. We are delighted to have the LRF landlord and tenants on board, and we look forward to managing their rental properties on their behalf. The acquisition allows us to expand into the Four Marks, Medstead and Alton area, where we know there is demand from landlords for a quality lettings service”. The owner of Hellards, Gordon Thoday, added “We are pleased that Linda chose to sell her business to us, and we wish her well on her retirement. The acquisition of LRF Lettings presents an opportunity for Hellards to build on and strengthen our existing business”. If you are a landlord and need advice on any aspect of lettings, call the team at Hellards, who will be pleased to help.

Total transactions in the past 12 months As we approach the end of 2023, the property market has experienced a year filled with both highs and lows. However, in Alresford, the sales and lettings markets have shown a steady increase in demand. The average sales property price over the last 12 months was £569,853, with 174 transactions taking place. Additionally, it is worth noting that over the past five years, 296 new homes have been built in the local area. The strong sense of community and desirable amenities, including schools and local shops, continue to drive the demand for properties in and around Alresford. In the lettings market, the average rent for homes let in the past 12 months was £1,483, with a 16% increase in the annual change in average rent. Mortgage rates continue to surprise the market, including buy to let rates, and this has also aided the Alresford property market as it continues to show signs of growth and stability. The next Bank of England base rate meeting is scheduled on 1st February. We were pleased to show our support for Santa’s Grotto at Sun Hill Infants School, held on Saturday 2nd December. ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE

Southampton Philharmonic Choir Known for its dedication to producing high-quality choral performances, Southampton Philharmonic Choir, together with Southampton University Philharmonic Choir (SU Phil), brings a captivating concert to the O2 Guildhall Southampton this December.

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

A SEA SYMPHONY TOWARD THE UNKNOWN REGION

Vaughan Williams completed A Sea Symphony in 1909, setting humanistic texts by Walt Whitman, including lines from Leaves of Grass, to music. It is a symphony for orchestra and chorus that weaves a rich tapestry of sound, with the orchestra and chorus creating dynamic waves of music that rise and fall like the tides. It is dramatic yet lyrical, and stands as a monumental achievement in his oeuvre. The piece is a grand, powerful journey into the depths of the ocean, echoing the might and majesty of the ocean, and taking the audience on a profound, immersive, musical journey into the heart of nature itself. In contrast, Towards the Unknown Region is a shorter choral work composed in 1907; Vaughan Williams’ setting of another poem from Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. As a companion piece to The Sea Symphony, this composition takes the listener on a different kind of journey – one that explores the unknown regions of the human spirit. It is hauntingly beautiful, delving into themes of transcendence and the eternal. Performing with the Choir for the second time is the Docklands Sinfonia, a ‘diverse, dynamic and versatile symphony orchestra’. To open the concert, they will perform Carl Nielsen's Helios Overture, composed in 1903 as a musical tribute to our life-giver: the Sun. This orchestral masterpiece explores light and darkness exquisitely to mirror the Sun's daily journey across the sky. Together, the three works form a fascinating ensemble; each part complementing the other two, in a performance that seeks to enchant and refresh in the run-up to Christmas. Cinderella at The Theatre Royal, Winchester

Theatre Royal Winchester is looking forward to the opening night of this year’s traditional family pantomime, Cinderella, which opens in one week on Thursday 30 November 2023 and runs until Monday 01 January 2024. The pantomime’s cast and support cast are now in rehearsals, busy learning lines, songs and dance routines; and two of the cast – Julian Eardley and Ed Thorpe, who this year play Fairy Kind-heart and Buttons – attended Winchester’s Christmas Lights Switch On last week to warm up the crowd before the High Street was bathed in glittering lights.

The pantomime is produced by Play to the Crowd, the arts and education charity that runs Theatre Royal Winchester, Hat Fair and Playmakers, and comes from the same creative team behind last year’s record-breaking Wizard of Oz, the enchanting Beauty and the Beast and the heartwarming Dick Whittington – the award-nominated pairing of writer, director and lyricist James Barry, with music by Simon Slater. Accessible performances are available, as well as the option of live streaming the pantomime at home and more information is available via the Cinderella show pages on the theatre’s website. For best prices and ticket availability, audiences are encouraged to look at performances early in the run. This year’s pantomime is supported by Play to the Crowd’s Corporate Partner, regional law firm, Paris Smith.

The theatre’s stage has once again been painted especially for the show and the pantomime’s set is being constructed; while finishing touches are being made to the costumes. The theatre’s front of house team has also decorated a number of Christmas trees to make sure the foyer areas look

Cinderella will be at Theatre Royal Winchester from Thursday 30 November to Monday 01 January 2024 at various times. For more information or to book tickets visit theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.

Hot Composting: How to Make Compost in Less Time The term "hot composting" refers to a method in which microbial activity within the compost pile is optimized, resulting in finished compost in a much shorter period of time. It requires some special equipment, as well as time and diligence. But if you are determined to have compost ready in time to start a new garden bed or for topdressing, hot composting may be worth trying. Hot Composting Basics The size of your compost bin or pile is very important when it comes to hot composting. Too small and the pile won't heat up sufficiently. A good size for a pile or bin for hot composting is at least four feet wide by four feet high. In general, bigger is better, but four feet by four feet is a manageable size for most gardeners. The pile should be placed in full sun, if possible––shade will cool the pile down a bit and slow the process. You can just heap the materials up, or use a simple wire fence bin. Of course, if you're construction-minded, you can also build a nice, large hot compost bin out of wood or shipping pallets.

Hampshire Fare Launch - A ‘Cracker of a Christmas’ Hampshire Fare, the county food, drink and craft group, has launched a ‘Cracker of a Christmas’ competition to help encourage shoppers to buy local this Christmas. Every week from 8th November to 13th December, Hampshire Fare will reveal a fabulous local festive treat to be won, donated by one Hampshire Fare’s valued members. Each prize will only be available for a week until the next cracker of a prize is launched. Natasha Dochniak, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, says: “The Hampshire Fare team is really excited about our ‘Cracker of a Christmas’ competition. This is a fun competition with a serious purpose. It is a great way of getting people engaged with and excited about the wide range of amazing local food, drink and gifts available. The prizes are being kept a closely guarded secret, however they really are exceptional including key elements of the Christmas feast, indulgent treats and special experiences. “We want to encourage people to take part in Hampshire Fare’s competition, but we also want people to consider buying local food, drink and gifts for their seasonal celebrations. Buying local is buying better! Local offers quality, flavour and thoughtfulness. “At Hampshire Fare we have seen a growing interest in conscious consumerism. People feel more invested in what they are buying when they know the story, the people and the passion behind the local food, drink and gifts they buy. Buying locally is also one of the greenest and most sustainable options, and by shopping local, people are helping to support local businesses which benefits our communities.” To find out more about shopping local visit www.hampshirefare.co.uk.

Items that can be Hot Composted It's best to have all of your materials on hand when you build the hot compost pile. Usually, we add organic matter to the pile as we accumulate it, but with hot composting, the whole point is to get the pile to heat up. For this, we need a large amount of organic matter, with the right carbon to nitrogen ratio, right from the start. The carbon to nitrogen ratio is essential in getting the microbial activity going in high gear and heating up the pile. Ideally, your pile should be 25 parts carbon to one part nitrogen. Here are some suggestions for carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich compost ingredients: Carbon-Rich Ingredients Straw, Dry corn stalks, Shredded paper, Small twigs, Dry fall leaves Nitrogen-Rich Ingredients Grass clippings, Fruit and vegetable scraps, Weeds that haven't gone to seed, Deadheads/trimmings from garden plants, Coffee grounds and tea bags, Farm animal manures, rabbit manure. No matter what you use, it is essential to chop it finely so it breaks down as quickly as possible. Often, the easiest way to do this is to run a lawnmower over the ingredients a few times. If possible, add a few shovelfuls of finished compost as an "activator." (Commercial activators are unnecessary. Compost happens.) Mix the ingredients together, water it so the ingredients are evenly moist, and let it sit. Layering is not necessary and often makes the process take longer.

Mr. Mac If you do not have a charging point at home for your electric car Apple Maps and Google Maps are both a good starting point to find your nearest charging location. Simply tap in “Charging Points” into the search bar and you will see a list of all available in your local area. Not only a list, but details of the type of chargers available. Some of you might not yet be convinced that electric cars are the answer. Perhaps you might be considering a hydrogen powered car. Have a look at the riversimple.com website and see how their alternatives stack up. As the holiday season approaches, and with the likelihood of many of you receiving or purchasing new "tech" gifts such as laptops, phones, tablets, or smartwatches, I recommend opting for suppliers with hassle-free return policies. Recognised brands like Amazon, Apple, and John Lewis offer generous return windows. Remember to retain the original packaging, and don't fret if you've personalised your device with information like an Apple ID; it can be easily removed, and factory settings restored. With tempting offers abound, I'm here to provide guidance and tips. Additionally, I specialise in setting up new Mac computers, laptops, iMacs, and Windows computers, ensuring a proper and smooth start for your new machine. Feel free to reach out for more details on these services. I would like to express my appreciation to the readers of Forum Magazine for entrusting me with their support throughout the last 12 months. It is consistently rewarding to engage with both new and returning customers, and I anticipate the opportunity to guide you through the dynamic world of technology in the upcoming year, 2024. Santa Baby, whatever happened to Father Christmas?

A

© Lucia Foster-Found 2023

box of Christmas crackers in one tanned hand, a tub of Quality Street in the other, she sauntered out of the supermarket. Breaking her self-imposed rule of waiting ‘til December to watch Christmas films, she went home and turned on the TV.

Was this a sub-conscious ploy to get into the festive spirit? Or a general lack of feel-good viewing on the box? Apart from ‘Strictly’, of course. And until ‘I’m A Celebrity’ kicked in - naturally. In any event, snow-laden, small-town, cinematic America had captured her heart. Deliciously predictable: 1. Guy/girl returns from the bright lights of the big city to the place they’d left years ago. 2. Awaiting them, amongst the over-decorated charm of their home town, is an old flame/new love. 3. Together they work to save the family business/home from bankruptcy/ruin. There was something so comforting about the constant consumption of cookies and hot chocolate – and the certainty of a happy ending. Either way, overdosing on the Christmas channel had worked! Filled with festive fervour she sat on her sofa and gazed around the room. Mentally she retrieved the decs languishing in the loft. So much better than actually, physically, retrieving them from the loft, with its mouse infestation and cobwebs. And in her mind’s eye she dressed her house for Christmas. However, in its imaginary seasonal finery, her home looked nothing like the American houses of her beloved films. For one, no snow – drizzle expected. Also, not enough red ribbon to tie bows around her kitchen cupboards. Nor did she have herds of silver reindeer to artfully arrange on her mantel piece. No army of wooden nutcracker soldiers would march across her coffee table either. She didn’t think she’d have enough trees, or tree decorations for that matter, to put one in Every. Single. Room. .. And the lights required to twinkle on the house, the hedge, the trees, the shed and, potentially, the dog, would cost her a small fortune in electricity. And thus probably not very environmentally friendly. “Oh well,” she shrugged and put on a Christmas CD. Looking forward to seeing her old favourite decorations, the accumulations of decades, she turned her attention to the presents. This year, in an attempt to single-handedly stem the tide of consumerism, the grown-ups’ theme was ‘home-made’. The possibilities were endless: chutney, knitted scarves, jam, whittled spoons. Easy. The challenge, however, was to make a gift someone would really, truthfully, actually want... P’raps not so easy.

In the background, Eartha Kitt sang of Santa baby in a voice that reminded her of butterscotch and praline. And Eartha’s wish list was a litany of 20th Century excess: a 54 convertible (gas guzzling planet killer), a ring (hopefully not set with a conflict diamond) and as for the sable under the tree – for years she thought Eartha wanted a stable – and presumably some horses… Ms Kitt had been an awful good girl after all. Different times. Well, she didn’t want any of those things. Just everyone well enough to be together, some festive cheer and some good games. But this year, she mused, who knew what Santa would bring? There! Shock, horror – she’d caught herself using the ‘S’ word. Whatever happened to Father Christmas? Everywhere was Santa. Raymond Briggs would be turning in his grave. The world was lately a place of instant gratification and convenience; with half the syllables, ‘Santa’ was a sound bite, whilst ‘Father Christmas’ was more of a verbal commitment. Was that it? Or maybe the influence from our colonial cousins? Halloween had galloped across the pond like a rampaging headless horseman with a posse of possessed pumpkins. And the Christmason-steroids of her current viewing of choice was littered with Santas - and something called ‘The Holidays’. Leaving that conundrum aside, she turned to the interweb for some homemade inspiration. There. Good old Good Housekeeping to the rescue; espresso martini liqueur – and she’d decorate the bottles with ‘Love from Father Christmas’ and a few snowflakes. There was that box of glass paints in the garage. Sorted. Come Christmas day, her family were delighted with her home-made gift. “Who does not love an espresso martini?” they cried in unison. “And the little bottles – so sweet! Oh look – it says ‘love from Santa’ – cute.” Yes, dear Reader. Santa.. so conveniently short. P.S. Dear Father Christmas.. So sorry. Next year; bigger bottles.

History Preserved in Allen Gallery Project Supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Allen Gallery in Alton is undergoing a transformational journey. Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT), which operates the Gallery, is coming to the end of the development phase of the project, Rediscovering the Allen Gallery. During this phase, HCT has been revealing and sharing some of the untold stories of the ceramic collections housed at the Allen Gallery and in wider storage at the Trust’s stores in Winchester. The project aims to refurbish the Allen Gallery and better showcase the nationally and internationally important ceramics collection, which is being researched, audited and photographed by a team of staff, volunteers and interns. Since the project began at the start of 2023, over 5,000 out of a total of 7,000 objects in the extensive collection have been inventoried by the dedicated team, with more than 2,400 objects now photographed. These images will be added to the Trust’s online collections, giving general access to these historical treasures. HCT has been working in partnership with the University of Southampton, the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, and Kingston University.

The collection boasts an astounding array of ceramic objects from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, including exquisite Chinese and European pieces. It is widely recognised for its vast scope and exceptional quality, with some specialists likening it to a miniature Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). The collection is also a comprehensive academic resource, showcasing the stylistic and technological evolution of English ceramics from its origins with Bernard Leach, regarded as the ‘father of British studio pottery’, and featuring works by influential figures such as Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Michael Cardew and Siddig el Nigoumi. Highlights include a Palissy dish, crafted around 1630, from the studio of French

COMMUNITY

Co-ordinating Alresford An introduction Much of what goes on in and around Alresford year after year is dependent upon the time and enthusiasm of volunteers whether that is at the Mid Hants Railway or the town centre Christmas trees, the arrival of Father Christmas, the Guy Fawkes Day celebrations, the eel house and museum open days, the Thursday lunch club, the Duck race, the 10k run or at the Watercress Festival and Agricultural show, to mention just a few of the things that enhance mid Hampshire life. When the pandemic struck in early 2020 the local community responded magnificently to help those who needed help in such unprecedented circumstances, but it became clear at that time there was little existing interaction and lines of communication between the various local groups, risking several “canoes” heading broadly in the same direction in somewhat of a disorganized fashion, rather than as a reasonably well organized fleet! Having identified the problem, representatives of organisations such as the Alresford Pigs

Winchester Councillors November Report Our Performance on Climate Action - 5th of UK Councils, 1st in Hampshire More detail, and the methodology, can be seen at District Councils’ Climate Action Scorecards | Climate Emergency UK (councilclimatescorecards.uk). No room for complacency though, Building and Heating, and Transport, are a work in progress. Different circumstances can make direct comparisons hard. Large urban areas have an advantage over scattered rural ones in some instances. WCC is a mixture of both as a nonmetropolitan district. An added complication is that waste is collected by WCC but disposed of by HCC. Food waste recycling is low as only southern areas can link in with Portsmouth waste facilities. New Government legislation on waste re-cycling which has been promised for various dates in the future, also adds confusion as Councils are reluctant to invest in more modern technology and equipment which may not meet new standards. WCC wants to further improve their recycling rates, but this has to be within national guidelines which are not clear. New Car Park in The Dean, Alresford Revised plans are to be submitted shortly, hopefully with a less peculiar design. The

Association, Alresford Rotary, New Alresford Town Council, New Alresford Town Trust, New Leaf Alresford, Alresford Chamber of Commerce and Churches Together in Alresford have for the past couple of years been meeting once a month or so, initially by Zoom and now in person, to get to know each other better, to raise awareness of forthcoming events (and to hopefully avoid potential clashes of date) and to provide mutual support and assistance. Quite deliberately the “Co-ordinating Alresford” group is an informal one, sharing the aim of maintaining and improving lines of communication generally and ensuring some structure is in place should “unforeseen circumstances” arise again. Co-ordinating Alresford held a well-attended meeting at The Cricketers in September principally focusing on how best to publicise and meet the volunteering needs of Alresford and the surrounding villages both through social media and otherwise.

Sadly there is never enough space in the Forum Magazine to include every event going on locally and in the surrounding areas. But we have fixed that! All additional events will be featured on our Facebook Page facebook.com/ItchenValleyMagazine

So keep up to date with what's going on by visiting the Itchen Valley Forum Magazine Facebook page REMEMBER TO FOLLOW US

Watch this space and in the meantime if you have time to spare to make a contribution to the community contact any of the organisations mentioned above! comments on traffic movements are worth a read, and, if true bring into doubt the viability of the off street parking. We continue to object to the lack of traffic management measures at Pound Hill/West Street junction. Sun Hill Construction Management Plan (CEMP) Given the delays in agreeing this we believe that the works to enable the A31 access should be deferred until Spring 2024, to reduce the number of traffic movements necessary. The original plan was that excavated chalk could be reused on site, however wet chalk makes soft slurry, hard to handle and cannot be used to build up the A31 access, necessitating material to be bought in – and an unacceptable number of traffic movements. Glass Collection Bins in Station Car Park There have been complaints over the noise associated with people putting glass into these bins, often early in the morning or late at night. The nuisance to those living nearby is unacceptable.. Signage requesting that they are not used at antisocial hours have been ignored, regrettably. These bins have been at this conveniently central location for at least 25 years and are an asset used by hundreds in the town. There have been discussions with the NATC on other locations, but there are no obvious sites. HCC say there is no space at the HWRC site to fit

in a glass bin. Solutions are being worked on, investigating noise reduction bins, acoustic fencing & enclosures and re-arranging the site. The idea of increased domestic glass collections has been considered, but glass is a heavy load and re-arranging bin collection timetables has other impacts, not least financial. Please be more considerate if you do use the Station Glass recycling point.

shops and town centre attractions and provides such a fun family activity. The Council provided a grant to the Alresford Christmas Tree scheme to help fund the large Christmas tree in Broad Street and ensure Alresford look its very best over the festive period. Huge thanks to the Alresford PIGS and Chamber of Commerce for organising this every year. The Community Defibrillator Scheme looks after seven community defibrillators around the town. These are checked monthly by brilliant volunteers and need appropriate maintenance. The Council have funded replacement battery packs and pads to help ensure they are in perfect condition. Such a valuable resource.

Have you ever been inside our red telephone box on West Street? The iconic red telephone box, a symbol of British heritage, was introduced in the United Kingdom in the 1920’s. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, it became a distinctive feature of British streets. The purpose of the red colour was to make them easily visible. With the advent of modern communication technology, the use of traditional telephone boxes declined. However, some have be repurposed, showcasing the adaptability and cultural significance of the iconic structures. Discover the heart of our town in our own repurposed telephone box in New Alresford, with local events listings, Discover Alresford and all the walking and exploring you can do within the area and more at your fingertips. Stay connected with the communityour red box is more than a relic, it’s your perfect local resource.

We are delighted to have supported the Chamber of Commerce by providing funds for the ghost hunt leaflets and the upcoming reindeer hunt leaflets. Our thanks to the Chamber of Commerce who organise this project, which encourages visitors to our local

Citizens Advice Winchester District is a local, independent charity that aims to improve the lives of people through free advice, support and campaigning. While available to all, it is often those in the most vulnerable situations who need their support the most. Their records show that over 120 New Alresford residents received advice over the last year and so we were very pleased to provide a grant to help continue this valuable service.

New Cycle Stands for Broad Street

We are delighted to report that six new bike stands have been installed in Broad Street on the three small islands located between The Town House and Alresford Builders Merchants. 11th November and Remembrance Sunday 2023

Our poppies and silhouettes were put up for the Remembrance period at St John’s Church and the Hambone memorial by Alresford Men’s Shed, to whom we are very grateful. It was a beautiful display and serves as a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices during times of War.

A Wintery Walk A s the weather grows colder, it’s easy to heed the call of the sofa cushions. But if you do venture out on a chilly day, our chalk streams are lovely places for a stroll. Even in the wintertime, these precious habitats are brimming with life and colour. For those places that have a winterbourne, regular rain could see their stream return to the landscape after months of hiding below the ground. Take a walk in the early morning for the chance to catch a veil of mist lifting from the stream’s surface – a magical effect caused by water rising from the chalk aquifer and meeting the frigid air. This is the ideal time of day to see and hear birds like wrens, robins, goldcrests, and kingfishers. You might even glimpse bats darting by, heading home after a night of hunting insects. Winter is also the perfect season to spot brown trout and Atlantic salmon engaging in their courtship rituals. If you’re lucky, you could witness males getting into tiffs over potential partners. No fish in sight? Look for patches of paler gravel on the stream bed; these

50

might be freshly made nests, or ‘redds’. These nests are easily disturbed, so check the area if your dog is going for a paddle.

Along the water’s edge, you may see clumps of watercress and water crowfoot. While they flower in the springtime, these plants give shelter to small fish during the colder months. Up on the stream banks, you might find the dry remains of umbellifers like hogweed and cow parsley. Though past their best for beauty, these plants have hollow stems that make great hibernation spaces for insects. If the ground is wet or frosty, study it for signs of animals passing through. You might be surprised by what you find, from the cloven-hooved tracks of deer to the star-shaped prints of water voles. Get to know your local wildlife – the number of toes, length of stride, and pattern of movement are all key. Fox tracks, for instance, look similar to those of dogs but tend to be in a straighter line. The Watercress and Winterbournes scheme stays busy over the winter months - our intrepid volunteers are out surveying fish redds and monitoring riverflies. For

a good excuse to visit charming places at their most peaceful, become a volunteer by visiting www.hiwwt.org.uk/winterbournes. Our work is made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Free Online Talks ‘Chalk Stream Moths and Butterflies’ 5th December, 7pm Ashley Whitlock from Butterfly Conservation details the amazing lives of the moths and butterflies that frequent chalk streams, and their immense value to those ecosystems. ‘Photography for Chalk Stream Conservation’ 11th January, 7pm Award-winning photographer Paul Colley shares his chalk stream images, explains the techniques behind them, and explores how they are used in chalk stream conservation. Winchester Citizens Advice Bureau Ally Chatterley, Operations Manager at Citizens Advice Winchester District gives some top tips on how to save money on your energy bills this winter. I am a single parent with two kids and I’m really worried about how I’ll afford to pay my energy bills when I start putting the heating on using lights more now winter is here. At the moment I just about have enough money to cover my bills but there is nothing left over. The thought of getting into debt keeps me awake at night but the idea of my children being cold and possibly unwell as a result is just unbearable. What can I do? You are not alone - a record number of people came to a Citizens Advice service with energy debt in the first four months of 2023 (32,400) - a 112% increase on the same period in 2020 (15,200). There are things you can do to feel in control when it comes to your energy bills including some simple tips to help save money on your energy bills. They won’t cover all the extra costs, but they can make a difference:

Volunteers from the Alresford Pigs and the Chamber of Commerce put up the Christmas Trees on the weekend of 25th November. We appreciate it is hard this year and 100% of all profits go to support people in need and our community and every penny helps! Alresford Ghost Hunt Congratulations to The Ghost Hunt Winners, who are pupils of Sun Hill & Cheriton Schools. The feedback from businesses and residents has been fantastic and this much-loved event was another popular year with 100s who took part, including many from all areas across the south from east to west. Our thanks go out to New Alresford Town Council for their continued support of this project. Arrival of Father Christmas & Late-Night Shopping Come and enjoy a festive evening with this year’s arrival of Father Christmas & Late-Night Shopping on Wednesday 6th December. All the Alresford Community Groups have been working together to bring a spectacular event, with many shops staying open, a festive evening will be had by all! Any businesses or individuals wishing to participate, sponsor or generally assist with any of our projects please do email us. Together we are stronger Keep track of our events, follow us on Facebook Twitter & Instagram @AlresfordChamberofCommerce / AlresfordCofC / info@alresfordchamber.co.uk /www.alresfordchamber.co.uk

• Turn off anything you’re not using: Turning your appliances, like TVs and washing machines, off instead of leaving them on standby could save around £60 a year. Turning off lights when you’re not using them – even if it’s just off for a few seconds - could save around £25 a year. • Consider using LED lightbulbs, which cost less to run. • Watch your water usage: Cutting your shower time by just one minute can make a difference. If everyone in a four-person household with a water meter did this, they could save around £75 a year. If you’re struggling to afford your energy bills, you might be able to get support from the government or your energy supplier. The first step is to contact your supplier to find out what they can offer. You may be eligible for benefits including the Warm Home Discount, Cold Weather Payments or the Household Support Fund. You can find out more about these on the Citizens Advice website (www.citizensadvice.org.uk). To speak to a local adviser at Citizens Advice Winchester District, call: 0808 278 7861 or visit our website for other ways to contact us www.citizensadvicewinchester.org.uk

• Check your thermostat: A room temperature between 18°C and 21°C is ideal for most people. Try turning your thermostat down by one degree within this range – it could save you around £115 a year. If a medical condition means you need a warmer home, ask your GP what room temperature you should aim for.

SUMMER HOUSES ∙ BRICKWORK ∙ FENCING

• Keep the heat in: Check your home for any gaps in the doors, windows and floors. Blocking any holes where you could get a draught could save you around £30 a year. It is important to allow for some ventilation as without it mould and damp can form.

Coveted South Downs Design Awards are launched

A

n exciting awards scheme to celebrate outstanding and innovative design in the South Downs National Park returns bigger and better than ever. After a five-year break, the prestigious South Downs Designs Awards are back with an extended line-up of categories. The awards celebrate high standards of urban, architectural and landscape design, as well as promote creativity and understanding of the National Park through design. The South Downs National Park has one of the most unique built environments within a protected landscape in the UK. As Britain’s most populated National Park with over 118,000 residents, it spans 15 different local authority areas across three counties and has four bustling market towns. It boasts 167 conservation areas – more than any other National Park in the UK – as well as 18 distinctive landscape types, over 1,000 designated spaces for wildlife and well over 5,800 listed buildings. Dealing with around 5,000 planning cases a year, the National Park is one of the country’s top 30 busiest Planning Authorities. Tim Slaney, Director of Planning at the South Downs National Park, said: “After the success of the inaugural South Downs Design Awards in 2019, we’re really excited to be bringing back the awards for 2024. With World Town

56

Planning Day taking place this week, it couldn’t be a better time to make the announcement. “The South Downs is such a special place and, since the National Park was created 13 years ago, we’ve seen some incredible and innovative design projects come to fruition, so many of them paying homage to this treasured landscape. “Good design is an integral part of good planning and contributes to the long-term vitality of our local environments and communities. “These awards are about celebrating exceptional projects past and present, as well as looking ahead to the future and investigating new ideas for development in the National Park. The competition is wide open and we’re looking forward to seeing the breadth of nominations.”

The categories will be: Residential – includes completed extensions, single buildings, small and large housing developments, and visitor accommodation. Non-residential – includes completed commercial, industrial, farming, infrastructure, recreation, and leisure developments. Conservation – includes completed historic parks and gardens, historic buildings, monuments, as well as excellent craftsmanship. Future projects – includes projects that celebrate distinction in unbuilt projects on paper and the potential for positive contribution to the

National Park, its communities and the planet. Winners will receive a specially designed trophy, beautifully hand-carved in South Downs oak by acclaimed West Sussex-based sculptor, Alison Crowther. All the shortlisted entries across the four categories will be put forward to a public poll and the project with the most votes will win the People’s Choice Award. Rafael Grosso-Macpherson, Design Officer for the National Park, added: “The scope of our ‘future projects’ category is really broad. It includes unbuilt projects on paper and the potential for positive contribution to the National Park, its communities and the planet. It could include student projects, concept designs, masterplans, design strategies, and corridor design projects such as watercourses and transport frameworks. “There are a couple of months before nominations open, so now is a really good time for people to get their thinking caps on about what projects they want to enter in the various categories.” Nominations will open on 1 January, 2024 and finish on 30 April. The shortlist will be announced in the summer of 2024, with a glittering awards ceremony taking place in the autumn. People will be able to nominate by visiting www.southdowns.gov.uk/designawards

Charity Quiz Night Raises Over £3,000 Home-Start Winchester’s annual quiz night was packed to the doors with 19 teams of eager quizzers, helping the family support charity to raise over £3,000. Martin Tomsett was quiz master with an excellent set of questions created by Mike Davies. National Home-Start Patron Alastair Stewart was on hand to present lucky Sarah Peters from Up Somborne with her week in The Algarve raffle prize, donated by John and Chrissie Barlow. The winning quizzers were a team from Itchen Abbas led by Suzanne MacLeod, and who were presented with their bubbly prizes by Home-Start Winchester Chairman Stephanie Durrant. “As always a great ploughman's and fudge brownies laid on by Jo Tyler,” said fundraising events Chairman Chrissie Barlow. “Big thanks must go to all the Events team for their hard work on the night, especially Tim and Ben for the muscle. Over £3,000 is a wonderful total,” said Chrissie, “which will go towards supporting our families who are struggling with young children, some of whom have no family support network, perhaps absent partners, bereavement or disability, to add to the many other pressures facing families today.”

The County Council is consulting on School Transport changes and there are two current consultations - both cover eligibility and update the costs and benefits for children. The first consultation is for children of school age, and the second for 16 -25 years . Both consultations run until 11.59pm on the 6th December. You can see them on this link www.hants.gov.uk/aboutthecouncil/ haveyoursay/consultations/schooltransport The Emergency Planning briefing that we had recently seems especially relevant after a week of heavy rain. Ground water levels are rising, and so it was useful to receive a refresher of who takes command, and what and who to contact in case of flooding or any other emergency. It is also worthwhile registering for flood updates too. More information here:https://www.hants.gov.uk/community/ emergencyplanning/prepareyourcommunity Councils urge all families to consider how they would cope if there was a household emergency. I have put details about some flood protection items for your home on my website www.jackieporter.co.uk I can send a printed sheet on request. Progress towards new hospitals for Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Ttrust I am a member of the Joint Health Overview

and Scrutiny Committee at HCC. The meeting at the end of October was very interesting: my role there is to represent your views, so please keep them coming! Health services provided by the different parts of the NHS are scrutinised by the County Council and this JHOSC looks specifically at the progress of the HHFT’s application for the ‘new hospital’. Our local Hospital Trust has received confirmation that new hospital funding is still available, but choice of design is not for our Trust alone: work is being done nationally to look at value for money/best practice designs for new hospitals. The Integrated Care Board (ICB) is looking at provision, bearing in mind that the number of over 75’s is predicted to increase by over 50% in the next 20 years. There are a few more hurdles to cross- but a consultation for all of us is expected relatively soon: picture yourself in a decade: what services will you and your family need then and in 2050? Responses will be online, and in person. I’ll advertise details asap. You can contact me as usual over the holiday period: details below.

Take advantage of the Alton u3a Winter Sales?! If you are finding these dull, damp winter days are getting you down, then why not find new interests and friends with Altonu3a? Reduced membership subscription rates of between £12 - £35 are available for January - May 2024, and you are welcome to take a “taster” before joining (group size permitting).

You are warmly invited to come and place a star on this tree in memory of someone who will be especially in your thoughts this Christmas time. There will be stars available in church, next to the tree, and you simply need to write the name of the person you are remembering on one of them. The tree will be in church from Friday 1st December until the New Year. St John’s is open daily until dusk. There will be a short service of Prayers Round the Tree at 12:30 on 23rd December.

There are now more than 55 different groups and activities, ranging from backgammon to bird-watching and crafts to current affairs, most of which can welcome new members mid-year; plus monthly coffee mornings at the Allen Gallery and monthly talks with tea at the Alton Community Centre, which are both open to all. And, as we start to plan the 2024-5 programme, ideas for new groups are always welcome please. Do pick up a current 2023-4 “Blue Book” programme from the Allen Gallery, the Curtis Museum, the Library or the Community Centre; visit our website at altonu3a.co.uk; or contact the Membership Secretary Colin Aiken for more details altonu3amembers@gmail.com With Alton u3a You Will “Learn, Laugh, Live!”

wishes the community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
