What is a celebrant and how can they serve their local community?

Many people I talk to are not entirely sure either, so… you’re not alone, if you’re wondering!

A celebrant is someone you can approach if you would like to:

• Mark a particular or very special moment of time in your life, your family - or business

• Have a crafted ceremony in which you can have everything you do want and nothing you don’t

• have someone working with you and for you to create an entirely personalised and bespoke event

I specialise in ceremonies to mark the most important times in people’s lives ~ when they say, ‘Hello’, ‘I love you’ or ‘Goodbye’ to loved ones for the beginning of life, the joining of lives and the ending of life. These include but are not limited to ceremonies for Baby Naming and New Families; Weddings and Vow Renewals; Funerals, Celebrations of Life and Memorials. I offer enhancements to ceremonies, especially for weddings such as handfasting (‘tying the knot’) or sand-pouring for blended families…there are many more to choose from. I live in Alresford so can easily meet for a chat!

The Water Rail's Tale

Even in the quietest parts of winter, our local chalk streams hum with activity. As coots and moorhens glide across the surface, one of their relatives may be hiding in plain sight. At around 23-28cm long, the water rail is smaller than these more outgoing members of the Rallidae family, but just as fond of damp places. Ponds, marshes, reedbeds, wetlands, and rivers are all potential homes for this enigmatic bird.

One reason for the water rail’s wide variety of habitats is its omnivorous diet. Although it mostly eats fish, snails, and insects, it will also snack on roots, seeds, and berries. There are even reports of water rails catching small amphibians, mammals, and birds. With its long legs, long toes, and long beak, this species is perfectly adapted for hunting and foraging on boggy ground or in shallow water.

The water rail sports distinctive colouration that makes it fairly easy to identify. Its face and underside are grey, while its back is dappled brown and black. Zebra-like stripes along its flanks lead into bright white feathers under its tail, and both its eyes and beak are a striking red. As a chick, the water rail’s black feathers make it resemble a baby coot or moorhen – the

trick is to look for a pale yellow beak instead of a red one.

Despite having snazzy plumage and being relatively widespread, the water rail is notoriously elusive. Its camouflage helps it to blend into the undergrowth, and its skittishness causes it to run for cover when startled. The odds of a sighting do increase during winter, when the UK population is boosted by visitors from the colder parts of Europe. True to their cautious nature, these migrating birds usually travel at night.

While you need sharp eyes and good luck to see a water rail, you may have a better chance of hearing one. Of their greatest hits – which include creaks, whistles, groans, and even purrs –their most common call in wintertime is known as “sharming”. Used to converse, mark territory, or express alarm, this call is a mixture of grunting and squealing that would make a piglet proud!

Since the water rail is so shy, it likes riverbanks that have lots of lush plant life. To welcome these beautiful birds, we need to allow a thick fringe of vegetation to flourish along the water’s edge. To learn more about how chalk streams can be improved for wildlife, check out the Watercress and Winterbournes scheme at hiwwt.org.uk/

winterbournes. Our work is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Poetry Prizewinners

Sixteen young poets – including Amber McClelland Morris from Bramdean, Isla Press from Alresford, and Mabel Martin from Kilmeston – have been named as winners in the Tales from the Riverbank Poetry Competition. Ranging from 7 to 17 years old, the winners recently received their prizes at a special ceremony in Winchester. Their fantastic chalk stream poems can be read on the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust website (hiwwt.org. uk/winterbournes) in the form of a beautifully illustrated anthology. Congratulations to all!

Alresford Pigs Update

There is always so much going on that it is sometimes difficult to actually come up with what to include in a Forum article. So for this month we would just like to thank all those local people who kindly supported the APA by either having there face painted at ASH barbers for Halloween, and those who attended our 50th Anniversary quiz night, and also to all the local businesses that provided prices for the raffle. It was very kind of Ash barbers to organise the face painting and to just ask for donations to the APA.

The quiz was organised by the APA and proved to be very enjoyable and successful, with the winning team coming from Bishops Sutton. Some £1,700 was raised and will, over the coming months, be put to good use within the local community.

We were also delighted to recently pay a visit to Broadlands Equine Therapy & RDA, the local RDA (Riding For The Disabled) and present them with a check for £3,300 to pay for the repair of some essential equipment. Broadlands is dedicated to supporting the physical and emotional wellbeing of adults and children with a wide range of disabilities and have been doing so since 1955.

By the time that you read this the trees will be up in the town and we will all be starting to look forward to the Christmas festivities, so don’t forget to come and see the arrival of Father Christmas on December 4th and maybe come and join us on Christmas Eve, around 1 pm, to sing a few carols in one of the local hostelries, you might have to visit a few before you find us! We might tell you which one on the New Alresford Facebook page a few days before.

Here’s to a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Website: www.alrefordpigs.org | Email: info@alresfordpigs.org Helpline: 01962 658961

Mr Mac - December News

For those who have owned Apple’s 27-inch iMac, many agree that it remains one of Apple’s most iconic models. Currently, Apple hasn’t announced a successor in the 27-inch range, so for a similar large-display setup, pairing the newly released Mac Mini with a 27-inch Studio Display is an excellent alternative. The Mac Mini, now powered by Apple’s latest M4 processor, offers powerful performance in its compact 5-by-5-inch frame. I recently set up this combination and found it to be a strong alternative to my classic iMac. If Apple’s Studio Display isn’t your first choice, any 4K HDMI monitor would also work well with the Mac Mini for an impressive, versatile setup.

I am unlikely to switch from my Apple iPhone for an Android alternative any time in the foreseeable future but if I was to do so I would buy Motorola’s Moto g54 Smartphone, with 8GB RAM, 6.5” screen, 5G, SIM Free, and a huge 256GB storage capacity. I have setup quite a few of these for my customers and they represent extraordinary value for money at £139.99 (from John Lewis). A great Christmas present idea.

Another Christmas present idea is this value for money portable Bluetooth speaker from Anker, their Soundcore 2, at just £29.99, with 12W Stereo Sound, 24-Hour playtime it’s great for home, travel or outdoor use.

That’s all for this month, have a safe and Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2025 - Andy - Mr Mac: 07392 552592

Investing for children –your options

Investing on behalf of your children or grandchildren could help them graduate debt free, get a foot onto the property ladder, or benefit from an additional income stream.

There are several options to consider, including Junior ISAs, junior pensions, certain types of trust and, for older children, Lifetime ISAs. The right solution for you will depend on your family’s needs.

All the below options come with tax implications for the donor, so it’s important to seek financial advice.

Junior ISA

The Junior ISA must be opened by the child’s parent or legal guardian, but anyone can contribute up to £9,000 per tax year.

Investments inside a Junior ISA are free from income tax and capital gains tax (CGT).

Junior pension

A junior pension must be opened by the child’s parent or legal guardian, but anyone can contribute up to £2,880 (net) per tax year. Contributions benefit from 20% income tax relief.

Bare trust

A bare trust is a useful option for those wishing to retain some control over how the funds are used.

Unlike a Junior ISA or pension, there is no limit on the amount of money that can be invested in a bare trust each year.

Discretionary trust

A discretionary trust can offer greater flexibility and control, as trustees have discretion over how and when the funds are paid out. Discretionary trusts are more complex from a tax perspective, with potential charges on trust income and gifts to the trust.

Lifetime ISA

For older children, a Lifetime ISA can help provide for their first home or retirement. The account holder must be between 18 and 39 years old and can pay in up to £4,000 a year until age 50. The government will add a 25% bonus.

The account holder can withdraw money from age 60 or to buy their first home. If withdrawals are made for any other reason, a 25% charge will apply.

Next steps

Choosing between these options isn’t easy, and that’s where getting some financial advice comes in. By understanding you and what you want to achieve, we can recommend an investment solution that’s right for you and your family.

We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

Alresford Surgery News

Thank you to our wonderful staff

We would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful staff who have organised, co-ordinated, vaccinated and inputted at our covid and flu clinics. We have vaccinated 2,495 patients (to date) and this is all in addition to our usual workload.

RSV Vaccination

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an enveloped RNA virus, in the same family as the human parainfluenza viruses and mumps and measles viruses. RSV is one of the common viruses that cause coughs and colds in winter. RSV is transmitted by large droplets and by secretions from contact with an infected person. Infants under one year of age and the elderly are at the greatest risk of developing severe disease. While most RSV infections usually cause mild illness, infants aged less than 6 months frequently develop the most severe disease such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, which may result in hospitalisation. From 1 September 2024, 2 new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination programmes will be introduced:

Programme for older adults aged 75 to 79 years old

All adults turning 75 years old on or after 1 September 2024 will be eligible for the routine programme and should be offered a single dose of the RSV vaccine. A one-off catch-up campaign for those already aged 75 to 79 years old on 1 September 2024 will be undertaken at the earliest opportunity.

Programme for pregnant women to protect infants

All women who are at least 28 weeks pregnant (the eligible cohort) on 1 September 2024, will be offered a single dose of the RSV vaccine. After that, pregnant women will become eligible as they reach 28 weeks gestation and remain eligible up to birth. We will be offering this vaccination at the Surgery, however if you are eligible, you will be contacted in due course as we plan to be running clinics in the New Year.

Medication supplies over the Christmas break

If you take regular medications, please make sure you have enough to see you over the festive period and please place requests with us in good time if repeats will be needed. If you have family coming to stay with you remind them not to forget their medicines.

eConsult will be switched off during the Christmas and New Year bank holiday period:

Any eConsult request you submit outside of our normal surgery opening hours will not be read until we open the next working day. Patients will not be able to submit eConsults over the weekend or bank holiday period. All the other eConsult advice services will still be accessible 24/7.

NHS 111 can help if you have an urgent medical problem when your GP practice is closed. Dial 111 on any phone for advice, or visit the NHS 111 website – 111.nhs.uk.

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)

Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life.

But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.

Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.

From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.

Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.

The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.

What is Ultra Femme 360?

Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.

Feel good…

Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?

This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.

Does the treatment hurt?

We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.

We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.

Book your treatment today. We should all feel good about our vaginas.

Honey — nature’s help during Cold Season

As a natural sweetener, honey offers a range of nutrients, antioxidants, and antimicrobial properties that can support our immune system. So, during cold season, honey is particularly beneficial. It can soothe sore throats, reduce coughing, and boost energy. The antioxidants in honey help fight inflammation and support overall health, making it a much better choice than off-the-shelf powdered cold remedies. In addition, its anti-inflammatory effects are known to support respiratory health, relieve congestion, and aid in recovery from seasonal ailments.

But not all honey is the same. Unlike processed honey, raw natural honey from ethical beekeepers like Honey Bee Happy is unfiltered and unheated, which helps preserve these beneficial properties. So naturally it’s better at boosting your health.

For Honey Bee Happy, a local bee farm in the South Downs National Park, it’s not so much about the production of honey though — it’s about the conservation of the little creatures that produce it. Honey Bee Happy is on a mission to support sustainable beekeeping practices and raise awareness about the critical role bees play in our ecosystem. Their work goes beyond producing honey—they’re dedicated to promoting the welfare of bees and other pollinators, which are vital to our food systems, biodiversity, and the planet.

The driving force behind Honey Bee Happy, Rachel Annette, developed a love of bees in childhood, learning the craft from her grandfather. With her team, their aim is to teach others about these amazing little creatures through immersive Bee Experience Sessions, An Hour with the Bees for families and Beekeeping Courses for those thinking of having their own hives. By practicing and promoting ethical beekeeping, they help raise awareness about the issues facing bees and offer a model for other bee farms and communities.

What does being an ethical bee farmer mean?

Honey Bee Happy’s approach recognises bees as essential environmental partners rather than resources to be exploited. They focus on ethical beekeeping practices that ensure the bees have access to natural foraging, adequate hive space, and minimal human interference, allowing them to thrive in a way that respects their life cycles and environmental roles. This not only leads to higher-quality honey but also reduces stress on bee colonies and ensures their health.

The Vital Role of Bees and Other Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are essential to biodiversity and our food systems. Over a third of the world’s crops rely on pollination, including a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Without bees, our diets would lack diversity, as many of the foods we rely on would become scarce. Pollination also supports wild plants, which in turn support countless other species in complex food webs. Honey Bee Happy's commitment to ethical beekeeping contributes to maintaining these vital pollinator populations and their work also helps support the charity Plantlife.

Buying Honey from Honey Bee Happy help support you, the bees, the environment and others

So boost your immune system this winter with raw, natural honey. By supporting Honey Bee Happy, you are choosing a business that places environmental stewardship at its heart. From their dedication to bee welfare and sustainable practices to their commitment to community education, Honey Bee Happy exemplifies what ethical beekeeping should look like. And every jar of honey sold by Honey Bee Happy additionally helps support Hart Wildlife.

The dedication of Honey Bee Happy has recently been recognised by the Countryside Alliance Awards where they received a Highly Commended over 44,000 nominations. Rachel has recently joined the board of Directors at Hampshire Farmer’s Markets where her expertise and commitment to sustainable farming are helping shape the future of local agriculture.

You can buy Honey Bee Happy at numerous local outlets around Hampshire or during December from their pop-up shop at Wood Farm, Bramdean but to learn more about the Bee Experience sessions and Bee Keeping courses visit www.honeybeehappy.co.uk

New Allotments, Spring Gardens – Plots Now Available

We are delighted to have an additional site for allotments, located almost opposite the current site on Spring Gardens, Alresford. Across both sites we now have space for almost 100 plot holders on a range of different sized plots. We are so grateful for the continued support of the Tichborne Estate who provide us with the space, and also to Winchester City Council to whom we successfully applied for a Community Infrastructure Levy grant to enable us to to do the majority of the work on the new site.

The increased number of available plots has meant that for the first time in years, we no longer have a waiting list for allotments and currently have a few available for rent. If you are interested in renting a plot, please contact the Council office on 01962 732079 or download an allotment application form from www.newalresford-tc. gov.uk

New Alresford Town Council work closely with the thriving Alresford Allotment Society to manage the site, and there is always help on hand for those newer to growing vegetables. Being outdoors undertaking active work is well proven to have a very positive effect on both mental and physical well-being. This combined with the sense of community at the allotments and the very

beautiful setting, ensures a rewarding opportunity for local residents and one the Council are so pleased to be able to provide.

11th November and Remembrance Sunday 2024

Our poppies and silhouettes were put up for the Remembrance period at St John’s Church and the Hambone memorial by Alresford Men’s Shed, to whom we are very grateful. It was a beautiful display and serves as a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices during times of War.

Sun Hill Recreation Ground Play Equipment

In December two new items of play equipment will be installed at Sun Hill Recreation Ground. The Triple Tower Traverse will be replacing the old wooden fort, that has sadly now gone beyond its natural life. With a slide, climbing ramps, a cargo net, fireman’s pole and towers, we hope the TTT will provide fun for many years to come.

And alongside this we are extremely grateful to the Alresford PIGS who approached us to fund an item of play equipment to mark their 50th anniversary. The Net Tower will be installed at the same time providing opportunities for climbing and a space for children to hang out. A huge thank you to the PIGS for this generous contribution.

We wish you a peaceful and restorative Christmas and start to 2025.

Sun Lane Alresford

It seems that some sub-contractors, or their drivers, are pleading ignorance of the approved construction traffic route to the site, and using Sun Lane. If you see this, if possible, send a dated photograph with the registration number and any company identification to us, we can forward that to Taylor Wimpey on your behalf, and copy to Enforcement. Even a note of the number, time and date is a help. We all want to prevent this from happening, but we need evidence.

Work has started on the SUDS, with little warning to the residents of Langtons. Although necessary and welcome, to remove flood risk to Nursery Road in case of heavy rain, the most affected residents should have been warned.

Following strong representations to Hampshire County Council (HCC) from Jackie Porter, HCC have now signed the S278 agreement which the new site to be attached to the A31. This will then be the only construction traffic route to the Sun Hill site and surely be most welcome by residents along New Farm Road and Tichborne Down.

New Bin Collection Rounds

Whilst for most this has been a smooth process, some assisted collection and rural properties, where long standing arrangements were not mapped, have had more difficulties. The first step is to report the missed bin by noon the next working day. If not collected after a couple of days email customerservice@ winchester.gov.uk with a copy to your favourite councillor.

There is a QR code which enable an email reminder on your bin calendar.

Alresford tip saved, for now! Thank you for all the messages received around the reprieve of the Alresford tip. This has been a long-running Liberal Democrat campaign, since 2016, and the outcome

belongs to everyone who has signed a petition, turned up at a protest, written a letter or encouraged anyone else to do any of this. Again, Jackie Porter was able to raise this effectively as a member of Hampshire County Council, with sustained support from your Winchester City Councillors. We need to ensure maximum use of the facility to demonstrate its viability and popularity.

Food Waste Collection Update

Roll out of the service will start in October 2025 and be complete by end of March 2026. This will need 7 additional 12.5 ton trucks and 21 staff plus reserves. The new trucks will run on HVO. We do have one electric truck which will be trialled over some months to assess viability on different collection routes around the district. The roll out of the new service will be done area by area to allow any problems to be sorted and experience to be gained.

At present about 30% of the black bin waste is food. Of this, half is compostable, though many houses and of course flats etc do not have compost heaps. The other half of the waste is meat waste, such as bones fish bits which cannot be composted etc. The collection of food waste and its processing in bio-digesters will further reduce the carbon footprint of the district, by and estimated 1,900 tons per year.

Plastic Waste Collection

Hampshire Council has not yet established when they will have a plastic waste recycling facility and will not meet the date of 1st April 2026, set in Government legislation. DEFRA are aware that no Hampshire waste collection authorities will meet the date.

The UK Government is introducing EPR (expanded producer responsibility) legislation which should be in place for 2027. This

legislation is intended to shift the burden of waste products onto the shoulders of those that produce waste. At is simplest this means MacDonalds will have to collect their cartons from hedges not WCC. In practice not so easy. The intention is that food manufactures will have the financial incentive to simplify their packaging, so it avoids mixing different plastics, paper and cardboard in a way that is complex or impossible to re-cycle. There are many packing materials that are biodegradable, but these are more expensive than existing plastics.

Merry Stress-mas

This year she’d been so smugly organised. And not just because the supermarket ‘Festive’ aisle had appeared in August.

No, she’d stocked up on cards, crackers and wrapping paper in the sales that had started with unseemly haste on Christmas Eve last year. She thought that, sadly, Gen Z would never experience the thrill of the January Sales; thronging through the department store doors as they opened on January 1st. Nursing a hangover that threatened to wrench her head from her shoulders, she’d dodge the ugly stampede to the discounted tellys and elbow her way to the racks of ‘labels’. Returning home triumphantly with bulging bags of too-small, too-big, too-bright, too ‘much’ and barely-there clothes that would sit in her wardrobe, never worn, quietly becoming vintage.

She sighed nostalgically for those days and reminded herself to sell those clothes on Vinted.

She’d practiced the gluten-free, dairy-free, chocolate Christmas cake back before the Autumnal Equinox. And its second generation counterpart was now residing in the freezer. It was a crowd pleaser; dark, unctuous and decorated with chocolate stars and edible glitter. More importantly, it catered for the fruit-cake haters, the marzipan sneerers and the various dietary requirements of all those who would, in fact, be far too full to eat it at afternoon tea on 25th December. Still, it would make a nice table centrepiece.

The shallots were pickled by the end of British Summer Time. (She’d always thought that extra hour in bed on the Sunday morning after the clocks went back was dearly bought by the dark evenings that followed.)

The ‘care package’ of Christmas cards, wrapped gifts and, most importantly, Maltesers had set sail to the Southern hemisphere before Halloween.

By Guy Fawkes, she’d made her own mincemeat and decided that she really wasn’t going to bother with all that faff next year. Although, after maturing for a few weeks, the mincemeat smelled so good that she decided the faff might be worth it after all.

By the time that Strictly had waltzed and cha-cha-d its way around the Blackpool ballroom, she’d made and frozen the pastry for the mince pies. And whilst she watched celebrities on their annual jungle camping trip, covered in cockroaches and eating things that she would rather they didn’t, she wrapped the presents.

Finally, she allowed herself to turn on the Christmas movie channel whilst she baked batch after batch of mince pies and pondered, as she always did, that it was a lot of work and that next year she might just buy some.

By Advent the presents were wrapped, the tree was up, the lights twinkled

and, as she put the wreath on the door, she ticked off the last box on the virtual list in her head. Done.

As she looked around at her handiwork, she expected to be enveloped by an enormous sense of wellbeing and achievement. Instead, she wondered what she was going to do now. December stretched before her without a tsunami of shopping, wrapping, decorating and baking to be shoehorned into the usual calendar of festive socialising. How was she going to feel Christmassy without all that stress? Things looked bleak.

December should be a time of panic; running to the shops for last minute ingredients, waking in the night and remembering the stash of presents yet to be bought and wrapped, wondering just how she was going to fit all that baking, making and sheer Christmas-ing into three and a half short weeks. How could Christmas truly be enjoyed without the pressure and the overwork?

She was brought out of her reverie by Himself. “Where are the mince pies?” He was rootling around in the cupboards, opening and closing doors, peering around the porridge oats and over the tinned tomatoes. Himself had already munched his way through the pre-Yule rations – the rest of the mince pies resided in the freezer, hidden behind the aforementioned gf, df cake (the one destined not to be eaten on Christmas day).

His look of disappointment tugged at her heart as she heard herself say, “In the freezer – but you can’t have them, it’s not Christmas yet...”

But wait! Herein lay her salvation!

She hurriedly retrieved the frozen mince pies, microwaved a couple for Himself, divided up the rest and announced. “I’m going to take these into work and you can drop those around to the neighbours. I need to get to the shops pronto for ingredients so I can make more pastry. And maybe some lemon curd for tarts.” She twittered excitedly.

Crafting ideas were trooping into her head thick and fast too; “I’m going to make the adjustable crowns I saw in a magazine.” My how she hated those slippery things that came in crackers.

“I’ll have to get the felt, some Velcro, jewels to decorate...” They’d be so lovely and time consuming! “I might even embroider them,” she added gleefully. She chirped, “And the crackers themselves – why don’t I make those?” They’d be fiddly and take ages... excellent!

“Oh, yes – and I’ll have to make more mincemeat, which will take a couple of weeks or so to mature. I’ll probably be baking right up to Christmas Eve!” she exclaimed happily.

With a delighted, “I doubt I’ll get it all done in time!” she grabbed a handful of shopping bags and hugged a bemused Himself, before disappearing out of the front door. She paused for a moment, mentally surveyed the new tick list in her head and sighed with contentment.

“It’s going to be a wonderful Christmas!”

Community Minibus – a busy year and fundraising success

NATT has run the Community Minibus service in Alresford for 54 years. It provides a door-to-door service for people with mobility issues, who can no longer drive or use public transport; by enabling them to go on shopping trips and days out, it helps them retain their independence and provides important social interaction. We run regular scheduled trips to supermarkets, Winchester and other shopping destinations, and also partner with other Alresford nonprofit organisations such as the Rotary, Pigs, Twinning Association, Football and Rugby Clubs, who borrow the NATT buses in return for a donation.

In 2024, the Community Minibuses and our 30+ trained drivers will complete around 275 round-trips, providing transport to around 3500 passengers. This is 10% more trips than 2023, and we will continue to continue to grow the service. Demand is increasing, as the population ages and public transport options decrease.

There are 3 ways that the people of Alresford can support the Community Minibus service:

• Become a driver – you will need D1 on your licence (which anyone who passed their test before 1987 will have automatically) and if you are over 70 years old, NATT will help you to have the medical and sight tests needed

• Encourage new passengers to join – we have space on some regular trips, and keep waiting lists for others. As well as supermarket and shopping trips, we can bring passengers into Alresford for the Friday morning Community Centre coffee morning, and to the Methodist Church for Thursday Lunch Club

• Borrow the bus for your group’s trip or outing – any local non-profit club or society can apply

We also need to consistently raise money to fund the service. A Charity Quiz organised by Rich & Ann Pay, Flos Bennett and Geoff Ames, held at The Arlebury Bar on 20th Sept, raised an amazing £485. Generous raffle prizes were donated by many Alresford businesses, and over 70 people battled with questions set by fantastic Quiz Master Geoff. The money raised will fund additional trips and a special Tea Party for the seniors of the town, with transport provided by the Community Minibus.

So if you would like to be a driver, to borrow the bus, or know of anyone with mobility issues who would like to go on shopping trips and social coffee mornings using the door-to-door support of the Community Minibus, contact minibus@towntrust.org.uk or call 07510 474231.

Autumn on Bramdean common

Home of the Church in the Wood

We are getting some unusual benefits from our present the weather. The seasonal leaf colour of our trees is no longer predictable and this is highlighted by Simon Newman’s latest photograph of the wood on Bramdean common. Taken in early November it shows the leaf colour providing the perfect foil for our newly copper clad spire. The work was done this year using re-cycled hot water cylinders.

Carols at the Church in the Wood is on 8th December at 3pm. To find it get on Bramdean common at 2.45pm and listen for the bell.

Jackie's County Corner

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I know it’s a busy time, and replying to consultations is the last thing on your mind on December but please do at least this first one!

Everyone has a view about the NHS Now is the time to give that view. To respond to the NHS 10 year plan consultation, go to https://change.nhs.uk/en-GB/ or simply type in change.nhs.uk into google or www.gov.uk . Deadline 22nd December.

What are the barriers to Cycling and Walking for you?

This is a new survey on behalf of HCC and WCC to aid work on the Council’s Movement Strategy . Deadline 22nd December. Go to www.hants.gov.uk/barriers-walking-cycling

A route has been agreed for the next (southerly) section of the Worthy Down cycle path from the Harestock water treatment works to Wellhouse Lane, due to be completed Spring 2025. I have asked for some maintenance on the whole route, following heavy rainfall.

School Transport

In late October, the County Council were proposing changes to the education transport, but withdrew plans at the last minute. School

The Friendly Alton U3A Winter Sale is now on!

Are you are finding these long, damp winter days are getting you down? Then why

transport costs the Council over £85million a year, and the cost is rising, so this is one area where HCC wans to reduce the revenue budget.

I have written more detail on my website, but National Policies continue to be discriminatory against children in rural areas attending their local rural school, which may be a bus ride away from their own village. Parents also tell me they believe the ‘walk to school’ ethos is impossible to achieve for working parents. What do you think? Getting it right is important for the whole community: because school traffic is a huge proportion of the morning and afternoon congestion we face. Please look out for the consultation, and I will remind you in a future ‘County Corner’ . To be useful, I have asked HCC to seek responses from parents of children ‘yet to travel’ , as well as those already travelling.

The proposed budgets cuts to ‘Lollipop staff’, Buses & Alresford HWRC were not agreed. Kings Worthy has a school crossing patrol, which was one of the services threatened in the cuts. It was agreed that these wouldn’t be removed as proposed. I am asking schools to include Parish and Town Councils when they update their school travel plans to support all additional safety measures near to the school. The 75, 6, 64 and 67 buses will continue, and the 240 and 95 seem safe for now. The KB1 minibus is now running 6 days a week, funded for two years to October 2027. The Alresford HWRC is saved! Volume collected is at 24th out of 24 sites, so please use it often!

County Councillor Grants

So far this year I have supported with small grants for nine projects. If you know of organisations who haven’t had a grant

not find new interests and friends with Altonu3a? There are now 65 different groups and activities, ranging from backgammon to bird-watching and crafts to current affairs, most of which can welcome new members mid-year: plus monthly coffee mornings at the Allen Gallery and monthly talks with tea at the Alton Community Centre, which are both open to all. We welcome all ages, and most groups meet in central Alton close to carparking and bus-stops.

Reduced part-year membership rates of only £15 - £38 are available for January –

from this fund before, I am keen to support children and greening projects this year, but it is a limited pot of money so closure for applications may be before the official deadline next February. Please contact me first to check availability.

In October, we shared our usual Councillor Surgery spot on West Street, and we were pleased to meet the Trustees of Bailey House who were explaining what their role to residents. Bailey House in Alresford is unique with bedroom and bathroom , importantly with day to day companionship, and currently with vacancies. It’s a really friendly place and following on from my last County Corner, when I was asking you to consider volunteering I promised to thank them for their work as Trustees via this photo!

We continue to hold local Councillor surgeries: but please contact us by email or phone if you think we can help.

A much-improved month for the club as our coaching, increased fitness and an all-round commitment to excellence is is resulting in some superb performances from the First XV, with an away win at Bognor being our first there in many years.

As we are now approaching the halfway point of the season, we are improving after a difficult started to the season and are now a team to be reckoned with in our league. Our fixtures in December are; First XV

7/12 Lymington Mariners (H) 14/12 Alton (A)

The

Waynflete

Singers

at Winchester Cathedral Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery

On Saturday 7th December, Winchester’s Waynflete Singers, accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra will return to the Cathedral under the direction of Andrew Lumsden. The concert titled ‘A Classical Christmas’ comprises a stunning programme of classical and seasonal music, perfect for the Christmas season.

Two choral masterpieces will feature in the evening's programme: Beethoven’s Mass in C, celebrated for its expressive and uplifting qualities, and Bach’s Wachet Auf! (Sleepers Wake) - an Advent cantata known for its lyrical beauty and joy. Alongside these renowned choral works, attendees can also look forward to traditional Christmas carols, with the opportunity to sing and join in the festive spirit.

Andrew Lumsden, the Waynflete Singers' Musical Director, will lead the concert. His recent departure from his post as Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral was met with sadness and dismay by many within the choral community. The Waynflete Singers are delighted that he will return to bring his wealth of experience and passion to the awe-inspiring setting of Winchester Cathedral. He will be joined by a quartet of reputed soloists, adding their voices to the sublime music of Beethoven and Bach. This concert promises to be a perfect blend of classical excellence and the festive tradition, bringing together the rich heritage of choral music and the joy of seasonal carols.

Tickets are available through the Winchester Cathedral Box Office and online. Phone: 01962 857275

We Need a Better Budget for Winchester

In advance of Rachel Reeves’ Autumn Budget I joined with my Liberal Democrat colleagues and called for a rescue package to boost NHS spending and invest in infrastructure. So I was pleased to see this pressure worked and we got a major funding commitment included. However, as I’ve been saying almost non-stop in Parliament - we can’t truly save the NHS without investment in social care too - and we only saw small funding boosts to care services.

Of course, with new spending comes new taxes and I was incredibly disappointed to see the bulk of new taxes being levied from small and medium sized businesses. Winchester has a huge diversity of independent businesses. It’s one of the city’s great strengths and a big draw for visitors from across the whole country and beyond. I recently joined with Winchester Business Improvement District director Paul Spencer to visit a range of city centre businesses and learn directly from them what impact the Budget will have on their livelihoods and their workers.

We also know that this tax rise will affect

Photography (supporting the Emily Collins school in Uganda (www.emilycollinsschool. com)) for wonderful photographs (see Alresford Rotary website), Hampshire Fire & Rescue and all others who helped make the evening so special but most particularly the local community who attended in record numbers for its great support, which will enable Alresford Rotary to make a difference to even more lives locally and internationally.

For supporting Alresford Rotary’s contribution to the 2024 Rotary Wessex Christmas shoebox project.

Children (and their families) from the Primary Schools in West Meon, Cheriton, Itchen Abbas, and Alresford (Sun Hill Infants and Juniors), St. Peter’s R.C. Primary School in Winchester together with Churches Together in Alresford, the Mothers Union, Northington and Swarraton W.I. and other local organisations and individuals enabled Alresford Rotary to deliver 362 boxes of gifts to the District depot in Boscombe on 2nd November as part of a magnificent total of 20,455 boxes collected from the Rotary Wessex District which broadly covers Hampshire and The Isle of Wight, Dorset, Wiltshire and the Channel Islands. Those boxes of gifts for disadvantaged and/or displaced children aged (0 – 15) left Boscombe for eastern Europe in

healthcare providers like GPs, care homes, hospices and social care providers. It seems totally counter-productive to increase health spending with one hand, only to take it away with the other. Instead we should be directing new taxes at the big banks, oil and gas industries and the hugely profitable tech companies to get our public services working for us. It’s about time they paid their fair share.

After 14 years of Conservatives taking rural communities for granted and betraying farmers with dodgy trade deals, it seems this new government has failed to set things right. The changes to inheritance tax are going to hit so many family-run farms across Winchester and the Meon valley. I campaigned to stick up

mid November in three articulated lorries –one with 6285 boxes (plus 2 cartons of woollen knitted items) for Poland to be transferred onto a Humanitarian Assistance Convoy which will travel into Ukraine via the Rotary Club of Zamosc Ordynacki, a second with 6081 Shoeboxes (plus 2 cartons of Woollen knitted items) for Montenegro where their distribution will be arranged by the Rotary Club of Ulcinj and the third containing 4109 Shoeboxes (plus 2 cartons of Woollen knitted items) which will be distributed by the Rotary Club of Chisinau in Moldova. That’s some real joy for 20,455 children this Christmas, many of whom will never been given a present – thank you!

For supporting Alresford Rotary’s community and fundraising events this year.

If you are interested in being (more) involved with Alresford Rotary in 2025 on an occasional or a regular basis we’d love to hear from you! Help us to become a younger, more diverse and even more active group of “People of Action”! Happy Christmas!

for farmers and I’ll continue to endeavour to be a true champion for our rural communities. As the colder months set in, I have not forgotten the injustice over Winter Fuel Payments. I’ve heard from so many people worried about their loved ones this winter, so I’ll continue to do what I can to ensure the issue remains on the agenda and we stand a chance of having the decision reversed.

Finally, it was a great honour for me to attend Winchester’s Remembrance Sunday proceedings. It is so important for us to remember all those people from Winchester who joined many others from across the country, the Commonwealth, and the whole world to stand up and defend our liberty during the two World Wars.

We must also never forget all those who fought in more recent conflicts and the veterans who live on. They did their duty, so it is our duty to ensure we take care of them and their families in every way we can.

If you have any problems or issues, please contact me at danny.chambers.mp@ parliament.uk. My team and I will do our best to help.
