COMMUNITY/ PROPERTY The Country House Company - Safely helping to keep the country moving
would simply ask that internal doors are open so we do not need to touch any surfaces. Extended discussion on properties will take place outside where possible. For viewings we ensure that doors are open in advance of a viewing, we only let 2 adults, from the same household, in a property at any one time, and we leave a sensible period of time between viewings. The viewing agent will wipe down any surfaces or door handles touched, and all viewing agents have a pack with sanitizer and disinfectant. After over 25 years in the industry we are experienced at making the viewing as effective as possible for the applicant and the vendor or landlord. As a company we have always prided ourselves on getting the right applicant for the right property.
The focus at The Country House Company is to ensure that our viewings and appraisals are carried out safely and efficiently. All the regulations in place for COVID 19 precautions may seem daunting but actually are quick, effective and inspire confidence during a viewing or appraisal and we have an efficient system in place for all members of the team.
We are experiencing an exceptional demand for houses at the moment to sell and to let. We have had offers on houses confirmed within a week of launch, sales offer agreed on the first day of viewings and a couple of rentals booked even before the property has been marketed. These are busy times so if you do have a property to sell or are looking at the possibility of letting out your house please do call us on 023 92 632275. Marishelle Butler
Having ensured in writing that no individual involved with a viewing or appraisal are displaying symptoms of Covid 19, are self-isolating or have been in contact with anyone who is self-isolating, we ask all parties to wear gloves and mask and we provide our own re-usable Country House Company masks. For a market appraisal we will have gained a lot of information on a property before we arrive and

How to renovate your lawn after a challenging summer mechanical scarification. Scarification and aeration create the best conditions for over-seeding. Unlike re-seeding, over-seeding works with the existing lawn and blends in with existing grass. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical than turfing. Top-dressing creates the ideal environment for the new seed to establish and will greatly aid the recovery of your lawn. We add a blend of composted green waste and washed lawn sand. Worked into the surface it helps to level the lawn and provides the perfect growing environment for new seed and tired old grass. Most bare lawns have a lot of new weeds which germinate in the gaps between the grass. A lawn treatment plan will deal with weeds whilst protecting the growth of the new grass. This year is challenging for lawns. We suffered a wet and cold spring which was soon followed by many weeks of high temperatures and drought. Lawns died back and I am now seeing many that have still not recovered. If growth has not returned by now then your lawn will need some work to restore it. The great news is that it’s far cheaper to renovate a lawn than it is to re-turf one.
What else does professional lawn care offer?
Autumn is a great time to renovate your lawn. We have the necessary knowledge, skills, equipment and experience to turn even the most unattractive patch of grass back to a beautiful green, lush lawn again.
Grass needs the right nutrition to survive. Your soil type will affect the availability of nutrients in the soil to feed and sustain your restored lawn. A lawn treatment plan tailored to the specific needs of your lawn will ensure healthy growth throughout the year. As an independent lawn care company, we can offer you a free lawn survey to properly assess the absolute best type of lawn care regime for your specific lawn. Any nutritional issues should be addressed before over-seeding and lawn renovation works begin.
What will it take to restore your lawn?
Wetting agents
Lawns took a beating over the dry, hot summer months. The warm and wet weather which will return soon creates the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from renovations. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction. Grass growing on compacted soil is more susceptible to disease and is less drought tolerant.
The solution? Professional lawn care
How do lawn wetting agents work and why use them? Prolonged hot dry weather affects the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water (this is called hydrophobic soil). Wetting agents encourage water to remain in the soil next to the root-zone of your grass which means less water wastage through better water retention. Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services is proud to be the local independent lawn care specialist in your area. Lawn recovery is extremely labour intensive work and many of the specialist treatments are not available through DIY chains or on the internet.
Please act now
We genuinely do have a limit on the number of treatment slots we can offer due to the amount of work involved in successful lawn recovery work, so please get in touch now and book your free lawn survey. If you would like more information, you can always call us and speak to a lawn care professional, or check out our website. Advice is always free! If you’re looking at a tired patch of ground where your lawn used to be, you’ll be amazed at the improvement that can be made this year.
Aerate your lawn before introducing new grass plants by overseeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking, or for larger lawns,

O
wowow.” Thud, thud. The sounds dragged her, somewhat gratefully it has to be said, from a deep sleep once again populated by gangsters, drug lords and rednecks. Late night binge-watching of Ozark during lockdown had probably been a mistake. But there was lots of life in the old dog yet, seemingly; himself was hopping energetically around the bed clutching his foot. One of the spaniels, after an initial puzzled, head-on-one-side look, collected its bone and sauntered off. Having trodden on the canine equivalent of a Lego landmine herself many times, she winced in sympathy. “If it’s any consolation, the bone might have been a sort of present left for you by the bed. That’s quite sweet really.” She suggested. Casting her a deeply dubious look, he said “Should the dogs even be in the bedroom?” “Well, when Queen Victoria died, one of her dogs was with her on the bed till the very end” she defended. He looked mildly sceptical and hobbled off to the bathroom. When they reconvened downstairs for breakfast a little later, the dogs sat expectantly by the table, unfailing optimism in the eyes that followed fork to mouth. On the rare occasion that no morsel came their way, there was never resentment - and she loved that about them. She tossed a bit of bacon rind to each. “Did you know” she shared more gleaned trivia “that ‘Dog Days’, those hot days of summer through July and into August, are so called because in ancient times they coincided with the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star?” He did not know that - and said so between mouthfuls of sausage and egg. Sultry and heavy, she felt they were surely the best of days; glimpsed reminders of those ethereal, lazy summers of childhood. On days like those, her hot dogs liked best to stretch out in the nearest muddy puddle. But she didn’t mind. They’d taken to greeting her with a slipper each; cheering after a dog’s breakfast of a day. And sometimes even from the same pair. And it didn’t bother her that, dog tired after a walk, they usually chose to flop down somewhere inconveniently underfoot. Often finding herself stretching awkwardly to get to the taps or unable to open the fridge, she’d let her sleeping dogs lie, they looked so peaceful. It really was a dog’s life.
12
Another recently acquired snippet came to her; “Mary Queen of Scots went to the executioner’s block with her beloved Skye terrier hidden beneath her skirts. After Mary’s death, it refused to leave and lay, rather gruesomely, in the blood between her shoulders and severed head. Eventually removed by force, the dog pined for its mistress and died shortly thereafter. Poor little thing” she announced with feeling. Raising eyebrows, he put down his coffee cup “Well, that’s jolly. Darling, have you eaten an encyclopaedia? A dog-eared volume of D to E perhaps?” A little sarcastic, she thought, when she was generously sharing her new-found knowledge. “Algorithms.” She said loftily “At least I assume that’s what it is. I was looking at some random dog stuff online and, like magic, it’s given me endless variations on that theme. Although weirdly fascinating, I’m not sure that’s not a tiny bit sinister. The internet’s awash with tales of ‘man’s best friend’ – a term first attributed to Frederick the Great, by the way.” Doggedly she continued with her theme. “Example: Lord Carnarvon’s dog howled and then died at the exact moment that its master died - on a different continent, no less. Tremendously sad – but how about that?” “Well, I knew that one actually – protracted childhood obsession with Tutankhamun. We are famously a nation of hopelessly besotted lovers of dogs. Who love us back. Well, mostly anyway.” “What do you mean, mostly?” Her idle browsing had revealed only canine love, devotion and sacrifice. He elaborated. “Apparently Richard II had a greyhound called Mathe. It was said that he was his master’s shadow and “knew no one else”, until the day that Flint Castle was besieged and Henry Bolingbroke came to deliver his ultimatum to the King. Mathe apparently came bounding into the room and proceeded to fawn all over the victorious Henry, completely ignoring the defeated King Richard. From that day the hound only followed Henry IV, as he became. Poor Richard, talk about insult heaped upon injury – that must have been a really tough day. And who knows, perhaps, to Mathe, Henry still smelled tantalizingly of the roast boar sandwich he’d had for lunch, or something.” He stood up. “Thank you for breakfast, darling. I’m off to see a man about a dog. Haha.” She smiled as he walked past the spaniels, fondling their silky ears. They fawned adoringly around his legs and, dogging his footsteps, followed him out of the kitchen. He did, after all, smell deliciously of sausages…

New Winchester Sport & Leisure Park reaches next major milestone
Winchester City Council’s new sport & leisure park at Bar End is set to become one of the greenest buildings in the south of England after reaching its latest major construction milestone. Construction partner Willmott Dixon has now completed installation of more than 400 Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on the roof of the fitness suite and sports hall, which will generate enough renewable energy to power the lights in the main swimming pool hall for 21.5 hours a day. In addition to the PV panels, the new centre boasts a specialist infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions and improve water efficiency through the use of thermally-efficient solar control glazing, extensive rainwater drainage and biodiversity enhancements. Combined heat and power for heating the pools’ water and electrical generation will also contribute to the project achieving an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating, a key marker in certifying the building’s sustainability credentials. The state-of-the-art facility will be equipped with the latest features including a 50m competition pool, a separate training pool (also with a movable floor), an eight-court sports hall, four squash courts 200 gym stations, two large studios and ‘Top Rock’ indoor fun climbing. A hydrotherapy suite, in partnership with The Pinder Trust, will also be available for patients with long term health conditions and for the public to receive physiotherapy, support with sports injuries and pain relief or for general relaxation. Cllr Malcolm Prince, Cabinet Member for Sport, Leisure and Communities, said: “Having stood atop of the leisure centre recently to inspect the panels, I can proudly say the new Winchester Sport & Leisure Park will be one of the most innovative and environmentally friendly buildings across the south. “Installation of the panels is just one way the council is continuing its commitment to reduce our impact on the environment. Climate change affects all of us, and now, just over a year since we declared a climate emergency, this building plays an important role in our ability to provide sufficient energy for the leisure facility and help reduce the district’s Co2 emissions.” Richard Poulter, Managing Director at Willmott Dixon said, “We are proud to achieve this significant green milestone. Despite Covid-19 we have kept the site open by making substantial changes to how the project's workforce could continue safely.”

Five steps to protect your retirement plans The impact of the pandemic has been widespread. People, businesses, and economies have all been hard hit. The road to recovery is likely to be bumpy for all. But what does this mean for you if you are planning to retire imminently? Most of the financial guidance in the marketplace right now encourages
savers to not take drastic action. To stay invested, remain diversified, keep saving regularly as the markets, given time, will typically recover. This is all well and good when you have time on your side, but what if you don’t? What should you do right now? If you have plans to retire in the next few years, it may seem that retirement is no longer in sight. However, there are a few practical steps you can take to get back on track.
The value of investments and any income from them can fall and you may get back less than you invested. Tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in the future. Neither simulated nor actual past performance are reliable indicators of future performance. Performance is quoted before charges which will reduce illustrated performance.
Step 1 - Review your retirement ambitions
Step 3 – Form a view of your likely cash-flow and expenses in retirement
Are your plans realistic? The longer you wait to retire the more likely your pot will have a chance to recover and provide you with a sustainable income in retirement.
It’s a useful exercise to separate guaranteed expenses against discretionary ones to understand how much you really need in retirement.
Many people choose to phase in their retirement plans by working a few days a week and using savings outside of a pensions wrapper to top up any income gaps. By doing this, it means you can still invest in your personal pension and benefit from tax relief at your marginal rate.
A guaranteed expenses pot would cover known household bills such as gas, water, electricity, and running a car. A discretionary spending pot would cover holidays, hobbies, and regular meals out. It’s also important to ensure you have a cash fund for contingencies to cover unexpected costs such as a new boiler, or roof.
This is an important consideration because if you take an income from any of your personal pensions, you trigger the money purchase annual allowance. This measure reduces the amount you can still save tax-efficiently into a pension to only £4,000 per tax year instead of £40,000, so you probably only want to do this when you really need to. If you are unsure about what’s best for you and your circumstances, an adviser can help you decide. Also, it is important to understand how active you will be in retirement. Many retirees scale down their activities in their mid-70s and, therefore, their expenses reduce. Health and longevity in retirement are important considerations too. Both affect your retirement income choices.
Step 2 – Understand all your pension pots Have you checked all your workplace and personal pension pots recently? Do you understand what types of schemes you benefit from? You can use the Pensions Tracing Service to find lost employer pots. This is a free service which searches a database of more than 200,000 workplace and personal pension schemes to try to find the contact details you need to request a valuation. It’s also important to understand the nature of the pension schemes you are invested in. Do you have protected defined benefit accruals as well as money purchase, defined contribution pots? If you are unsure about your retirement scheme benefits, an adviser can help you assess them. Sometimes it can be useful to consolidate the various pots, review the fees and charges, and work out the best way to optimise them. Also, don’t forget about the state pension. Request an estimate to ensure you will benefit from the full state pension. It can also be cost-effective to purchase missing qualifying years to ensure full state pension pay out.
Our advisers can help you model your expenses against your savings with financial forecasting tools to understand whether you are still on track to meet your retirement ambitions. Understanding your guaranteed and discretionary spending needs can help you make the right income choices in retirement too.
Step 4 – Understand your income options Separating your essential guaranteed income from your discretionary spending means you can invest your accrued retirement savings in different ways to meet these differing needs. It also means you can look at a range of investment returning products to help you manage your income in retirement. For example, the guaranteed expenses pot could be covered by buying a small annuity initially and then using the state pension at 67 plus to top it up. The discretionary spending pot could remain invested in higher returning assets which you would draw an income from annually to pay for holidays and hobbies. A mixture of drawdown, annuities and the state pension can provide a level of security in retirement, but it is important to understand the pros and cons of each option. A strategy for using your retirement savings and investing them appropriately can help to produce a sustainable income in retirement.
Lastly, step 5 – If you still feel that you are not on track you can seek help If you are unsure about your next steps and would like some expert help, an adviser specialising in long-term saving can help you plan effectively. It is vital to start planning for your actual retirement so that you can position your finances appropriately. A good financial plan helps you manage your financial risks, while helping you make the most of all the opportunities that will come with retirement, and the earlier this is put in place, the better. Now is the time to realise your retirement ambitions with a practical financial plan to achieve them.

THE
Naked Grape Magnificent 7
The most memorable wines in my wine life so far. Having been in the Wine Trade now for just over 23 years, the variety and style of wines I have tasted and enjoyed are in the tens of thousands. However, every now and then a wine arrives that shapes your mind and palate in a new and utterly mesmerising way. Below are my Top 7 so far.
BLANDYS VINTAGE 1907 BUAL MADEIRA
CHATEAU MARGAUX 1986, FIRST GROWTH BORDEAUX
CHABLIS GRAND CRU LES CLOS 1993
Enjoyed with 3 generations of family in a holiday cottage, Gunwalloe Cove, Cornwall. My wife and I drove down to meet my parents and grandparents on holiday for a week in Cornwall.
Enjoyed at the Glass Bottom Boat restaurant in Bristol. My best man and best friend and I decided we would go out to celebrate the night before my wedding. After a trip to a snooker hall (don't ask!) we settled into the restaurant who had already agreed we could bring our own bottle at a corkage charge of ÂŁ10. As the waiter began to open it a small gathering grew around the bottle.
Enjoyed at home with my wife. In my job, I get quite a few people ask me advice about wine. One lady came in and said she had some wine in the back of her garage and could I pop round and value it.
I had this bottle lurking at home after finding it in Bottoms Up Wine Warehouse in Weybridge. It was a snip and my eyes lit up as soon as I saw it. Upon opening it, the cork disintegrated down into the bottle so I sieved it through an old tea towel! From start to finish it was astonishing. The colour was engine oil chestnut brown, sweet caramel and spirit on the nose, amazing freshness with overripe nutty sultana fruits. Length 5 mins plus. Everyone went quiet when we first tried it, always a good sign!

As we enjoyed the wine with our meal, every sip was slightly different and more compelling. I remember it disappeared so quickly, which is also a memory as it’s the most expensive bottle I've ever bought! Such a brilliant mahogany colour and a fantastic perfumed nose, glorious polished feel in the mouth, smoke, rich fruits, astonishing seamless palate and finish. It was worth every penny.
It was nearby so I agreed. When I got there, the garage had been demolished and the wines were sat in the open, and it was raining! Of the 30 odd bottles, 4 were of interest to me, the rest were past it. I bought the 4 and this one was the best. I drank it that night and it taught me that old white wines can be amazing. Platinum gold in colour with a racy freshness, it had electric clarity and elegance across the palate. It did not show it's 22 year age at all.

CHAMPAGNE LANSON 1989 VINTAGE
CHATEAU REYNELLA 1997 BASKET PRESS SHIRAZ, MCLAREN VALE AUSTRALIA
Enjoyed at our best friend’s house in Weston super Mare. I stumbled across these seminal vintage champagnes released by Lanson in wooden triple gift boxes to celebrate the bonkers 1988,1989,1990 vintage years. The boxes themselves looked the part, but the champagnes inside were out of this world.

LIFE’ S
I bought all I could find and drank them on several occasions. (I even found some Magnum sets too!) My fav was the 1989. The bubble was so fine and small in the glass, like tiny jewels. A toasted brioche aroma, glorious richness and finesse of acidity and just so easy to drink. This bottle reminds me of decadent days from the past.
Enjoyed with my wife to be, when we first started courting. Invited round for a meal, I said I would bring a bottle of wine. I had known this beautiful person for a matter of weeks, the beginning of our relationship. It was early days for me in the wine world and I knew nothing. I took this bottle as it was the best Sainsburys had. The first glass went down ok, and then a lightning bolt hit. The second glass had had time to aerate and the temperature of the wine had changed a bit. ( I realise this now! ) IT TASTED AMAZING. I called out, " quick, come and taste this wine again" We enjoyed the wine, chatting and discussing it's elements and flavours throughout the meal. This wine pulled me into the wine world, and for that I am grateful.

CHATEAU LEOVILLE LAS CASES 1985, ST JULIEN SECOND GROWTH, BORDEAUX
CHATEAU BATAILLEY 1977, PAUILLAC, FIFTH GROWTH BORDEAUX
Enjoyed on Christmas Day with my wife and her parents. I had spent 8 years or so sourcing magic high end wines to show off to the in-laws on Christmas Day, when I struck gold with this Bordeaux.
Enjoyed on my 40th Birthday with friends and my parents. This is my favourite Bordeaux estate. I love the label, the name, it's historic past and the wines ability to age for decades. I am currently aiming to drink every year of this wine that has been made between 1966 and 2000. So when invited by my long term General Manager and confidant to a 40th Birthday meal at hers, I needed some 40 year old Batailley!
I knew it was going to be good, but the near misses from previous years were still in my mind. (we had enjoyed a Vosne - Romanee the previous year as I was eager to enjoy it, but it was too young...doh!) The Leoville Las Cases was a star. Cork in perfect condition, a nose of vanilla pod, cassis and warm red fruits. An earthy touch opened to the most sublime mouthfeel and oak integrated palate. It felt like heaven, immediately. My lasting memory was my father in-law almost wringing the neck of the bottle to get the last drops out. What a Christmas!
It did not disappoint, even though we enjoyed it way past the expected point of maturity. That's the thing about Batailley, it ages so well. The colour was still brick red with a touch of orange skin on the rim. Liquorice and leather on the nose, silky totally tannin free palate. It was fresh, vibrant, multi layered and alive. It was so good we opened and drank all 3 bottles I had brought. Here's to the next one!

HAMPSHIRE
FOOD & DRINK Hampshire Fare - Stay Loyal Stay Local: Supporting Hospitality Coinciding with the government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, running from 3rd-31st August, Hampshire Fare, the county food group, has launched phase three of its major new campaign to support the hospitality sector as it gradually reopens. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, explains: “Pre-pandemic the hospitality sector was worth in excess of 133bn to the national economy. In addition, hospitality is often crucial to the local economy and at the heart of rural communities, providing much needed employment opportunities and social hubs.
Hampshire-based vineyard and wine producer, Raimes English Sparkling, was awarded a gold medal in the Classic Cuvee Vintage category at the recent Wine GB Awards. The Wine GB awards have been a little different this year, but just as exciting as ever. The judging took place in July, with a reduced judging panel comprising Co-Chairs Susie Barrie MW and Oz Clarke MBE, and Rebecca Palmer, wine buyer of Corney & Barrow, tasting through a record number of wines. Among the other successes for Hampshire, are golds awarded to Hattingley Valley, Jenkyn Place, Black Chalk and The Grange Estates.

“Reopening hospitality was never going to be straightforward. The requirements for staff to wear protective coverings and gloves, the need to limit numbers and impose timings goes against the very ethos of offering a relaxed eating out experience. “As the sector gradually reopens, we are rolling out the third phase of our ‘stay loyal stay local’ campaign highlighting the value of this sector to our communities, through employment and enjoyment! This includes artwork featuring the stars of the hospitality sector such as our chefs and pub landlords. We are also in the process of delivering a leaflet campaign to targeted areas across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.” The ‘Stay Loyal Stay Local’ campaign was devised by Hampshire Fare and launched in June with support from Hampshire County Council and Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership. The first phase was a rallying cry, asking consumers to stay loyal to those relationships they formed with local independents, producers and suppliers during lockdown. The campaign focused on the people behind the businesses and included artwork to be used in shop windows as well as across an extensive social media campaign. Phase two developed the campaign artwork into a fun series of downloadable colour-in characters, from beekeeper to baker, aimed at encouraging children to discover more about the local environment and the local food chain. The third phase is a call out to ask and encourage people to support the recovery of
“There are some very strong winners, both sparkling and still wines, in all categories. It was particularly pleasing to see new producers competing alongside long-established ones, proving that the UK is an ever-growing and hugely exciting region to watch. Congratulations to every single medal winner, you can feel very proud of what you have achieved.” Co-chair Susie Barrie Judges described Raimes Classic 2015, which is produced in the traditional method from classic grape varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier as “Fascinating Stuff. Bursting with
the local hospitality industry, such as local bars, cafes, pubs and restaurants as they reopen. Tracy Nash continues: “Hospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said in a recent report that the hospitality sector is crucial to the health of the UK economy, providing muchneeded growth, investment and jobs in every single region of the UK. Kate Nicholls stated that, ‘hospitality is the third largest private sector employer in the UK, double the size of financial services and bigger than automotive, pharmaceuticals and aerospace combined. It has played a key part in helping the economy through tough times’. “We want to encourage people to support their local hospitality businesses – which are so important in terms of community, economy, environment, resilience, sustainability and wellbeing. We have been impressed by our local hospitality owners and managers who have put in place well-considered procedures for the welfare of the customer. We ask people to consider supporting their local pubs, cafes and restaurants, many of whom are also offering al fresco dining, cook at home alternatives and takeaway. They are going to need all the support they can get. “Over 75% of our hospitality members have signed up for this scheme, which is an impressive take-up. We are simply asking people to take advantage of this great offer and ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ while Staying Loyal and Staying Local.”
personality but absolutely not your glass of mainstream fizz.” "We are absolutely thrilled to win a gold medal for our Classic,” says Augusta Raimes, owner of Raimes English Sparkling. “This 2015 release follows in the footsteps of our highly acclaimed 2014 Classic so we are delighted the latest release has achieved similar recognition.” Looking ahead to harvest The fabulous summer sun has created near perfect conditions for the vines. After the late frosts we saw in May the vines recovered from their shock of -2 during those chilly nights and have been enjoying the glorious warm sun over the past few months. We’ve counted grape bunches across the vineyard to estimate the yield which is looking very positive as we enter the phase or veraison (grape colour change) across the vineyard.

Adult Flu Clinics This is the time of year when we start planning our flu clinics at the surgery. As you can appreciate this year will not be quite the same as previously as we need to build the effects of the coronavirus pandemic into our plans. We are still awaiting detailed guidance from NHS England but some things are already clear. We will not be running any walk-in clinics or remote clinics this year. We anticipate the clinics being booked appointments only from mid-September onwards once the vaccine has been delivered. Please do not call to book an appointment until the end of August – there will be plenty of availability. Please be assured that we will be putting in place everything we need to do to make your visit safe and Covid secure – social distancing, staff in PPE and minimising your time in the surgery. However, we are going to need your help in helping us to make the clinics run as smoothly as possible. Please make sure you wear a face covering when you come for your flu jab. Please make sure you wear a short sleeved shirt or top and that your outer clothing can be easily removed. We will need to access the very top of your arm in order to administer the vaccine and anything you can do to make that easier would be very much appreciated. At the time of going to press we will be vaccinating our usual patients ie patients who will be 65 or over on 31/3/2021, are a carer, are pregnant, or may have, or had, a condition which could put them at increased risk should you get influenza. Child Flu Clinics We will also be contacting parents whose children are aged 2-3 (born 1.9.2016 – 31.8.2018) or aged 4-17 and have a condition which puts them at greater risk if they get flu. Children in years R-6 will be vaccinated in school by Schools Health. Please wait until you get an invitation letter before contacting the surgery. New salaried GP Dr. Amy Chandler has now qualified as a GP & will be joining the practice on a permanent basis 3 days per week. We are very excited to have her on board as a permanent member of the Alresford Surgery team. Welcome to out new GP trainees As many of you will know, we are a training practice which means we regularly host doctors who are undergoing their specialist GP training. Prior to starting the GP Specialist Training Programme a doctor will usually have worked in a number of different hospital departments gaining skills, knowledge and experience. The GP training programme takes 3 years and during the first two years of this a GP trainee will undertake placements in a number of different medical specialties including a six month placement in a GP surgery. The final year of the training programme takes place in a different
24
practice where the trainee (or Registrar as they are known) will use the knowledge and experience they have already have to gain the particular skills of a GP. We are very pleased to introduce our new cohort of trainee GPs, Dr Jason Gupta, Dr Stephen Rohan and Dr Abigail Morbi. Dr Gupta will be with us until August 2021 and amongst other things he will be looking after the residents at Old Alresford Cottage Rest Home. Dr Rohan and Dr Morbi will be with us until February 2021. Try the new NHS App If you’re a patient at our practice you can now use the new NHS App, a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services on your smartphone or tablet. You can use the NHS App to check your symptoms and get instant advice, book appointments, order repeat prescriptions, view your GP medical record and more. If you already use Patient Access you can continue to use it. You can use the NHS App as well. For more information go to www.nhs.uk/nhsapp The Alresford Surgery
Alresford Pilates When the lockdown arrived and classes had to stop at The Studio back in March we had to move quickly ONLINE to ensure our clients did not have to miss out on their weekly sessions of Pilates! It was a steep technological learning curve back in those first few weeks for Sally Hogg, Owner and Teacher, however Pilates via ‘Zoom’ rapidly became the new norm and it has proved very popular providing some much needed continuity in life. Being able to enjoy a regular 'virtual Pilates session’ in the safety of their own home has been invaluable to many AP clients and the ability to have a catch up with classmates afterwards was an added bonus! Now, finally in September small, socially-distanced classes can once again start back in The Studio – if you have never done Pilates why not give it a try - we have a Brand New Beginners session starting on Fridays. Alternatively if you would like to join in with ONLINE PILATES, that will be continuing as well – if you are new to ‘zoom’ we can help get you set up. Alresford Rotary News For the past 30 years Alresford Rotary members have organised the torchlight procession, town bonfire and fireworks in early November. Recognised as a display that punches well above its weight for a town of Alresford’s size, the event attracts thousands of people from all over Hampshire. This year is, of course, a year like no other. Mass participation events may be possible over the coming months, but there is so much uncertainty over rules and permissions that planning is almost impossible for a small charitable organisation. The imposition of one way systems, temperature checks and the need to be able to track and trace all attendees has meant that staging the event would be beyond the abilities of our 16 strong membership and our volunteers. So the decision has been taken not to hold the torchlight procession, bonfire and fireworks this year. We’re looking into what we might be able to do to keep something in the calendar, but it won’t be nearly as spectacular or so much of a community event. This wasn’t a choice we made lightly, but we had to decide well ahead of committing ourselves to buy over £7000 of fireworks that no one could come and see. We hope , of course, to be back next year with a plan to make as big a bang as always. We have been busy in lockdown and continue to meet virtually, a practice that will form part of the routine even after lockdown and which has allowed participation by Rotarians wherever they find themselves, including our long-standing honorary member, Brian Ranger, all the way from his house in Cannes. The annual 10k Road Race became a virtual race for local people that saw over 50 residents of Alresford and Four Marks run the 10k route and send their times in to us. In return, they received a medal in the form of a biscuit baked by Arlebury Café owner Becky Smith. The money raised will be donated to the local NHS and to support local hardship cases. Our charitable donations have continued; over the past 12 months we have given over £14,000 to local and international charities. Locally we have provided £4,500 for benches on the Watercress Way, £1000 to Ropley Primary School for it new outside learning area and £1000 towards the refurbishment of the river bank in the proximity of the Eel House, plus numerous smaller donations to those in need and other good causes. Overseas donations have included £1500 for the provision of medical supplies in Zimbabwe and continued support for Michael Clarke’s SEPIA work in Ghana. Like many volunteer organisations Rotary has suffered a decline in membership in recent years. The pace of life and a change in the way people want to volunteer and support their local communities and good causes around the world has changed. We’ve taken the time in lockdown to consider how we are going to change and have plans for a simpler, more inclusive form of organisation that we hope will appeal to those who want to help others, but for whom the old, rather staid model didn’t work. We’re planning to move away from our rather formal Monday evening meetings to a mixture of online and more relaxed social events designed to bring people together in order to plan our community and fund-raising events. We’re looking for community spirited volunteers to join us. If you’re interested in working inside the world’s largest voluntary service organisation that has real global reach and that tackles

some of the hardest problems society at large faces (poverty, sanitation, clean drinking water, polio, preventable blindness and so on) but which still cares for local good causes, then Rotary is for you. It is an inclusive organisation – 17% female nationally, significantly less in Alresford. We’d like to change that! If you travel nationally or internationally and want a free pass to meet others like you wherever you may be (there are 1700 groups in UK and 33000 across the globe) then Rotary is for you. If you enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of organising community events that make Alresford what it’s famous for, then you should get in touch. It doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 80, if you care and want to make a difference, if you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty and if you want to meet other people just like you, please do get in touch. rotaryalresford@gmail.com

NEW ALRESFORD
Greenest Town in Hampshire?
N
ew Alresford, ‘Greenest Town in Hampshire’. Is this a reasonable declaration, aspirational, or ridiculous? When it comes to laying claim to the title, our town already has some great credentials. After all, Alresford has its very own solar ‘power station’ situated near the aptly named Sun Lane, generating enough electricity to supply around 5000 homes a year. We also have our natural ‘green assets’ - chalk downland and chalk streams, and the unique habitats they provide. There are only around 200 chalk streams in the world, with most in southern England and a few in France. More and more local businesses are looking at the products they stock and opting for ethically and locally produced items. Steps have been taken to reduce our plastic consumption; we can now buy fresh produce in paper bags once again and use refillable containers for products as diverse as detergent and locally brewed beer! We can do all this on our doorstep, without the need to hop in a car. We have our very own Men’s Shed repairing and repurposing items for use by the community. In July, volunteers from the Alresford Pigs (with a little help), picked the town clean of litter. New Alresford Town Council has planted hedging and trees in Arlebury Park, and ensured that some areas are left wild to support our pollinators. Organisers of the ‘Big Three’ annual events: Alresford Music Festival, the Watercress Festival and Alresford Show, have all taken steps to reduce or ban single use plastics and maximize recycling. A quick survey of New Alresford social media shows special interest groups focused on the wildlife and environment, home growing and New Leaf Alresford, which champions sustainability and tackling climate change. Alresford loves to recycle! The blue bins at Sun Hill have received thousands of our crisp packets, and there are collection points in our town for pens, batteries, glasses, contact lenses - and more. Whilst Covid-19 has affected our access to the Alresford Recycling Centre, we can but hope that people are hoarding their recyclables until normal service is resumed, because last year the town recycled over 131 tonnes of scrap metal, 73 tonnes of cardboard and 32 tonnes of textiles. Over 11 tonnes of non ferrous waste, which includes aluminium foil and takeaway trays, were recycled. That’s a saving of 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide on producing new aluminium - or to put it another way equivalent to driving 280,000 miles, which is further than the moon!
change is at national and international level, we will all need to do our bit in adopting more sustainable lifestyles. Some might say that having a coal powered tourist attraction presents some challenges, but vehicles which are still operational after nearly 100 years are a great example of engineering that was built to last, in contrast to our modern printers and computers with their planned obsolescence. The Watercress Line is in a powerful position to tell the story of a former love affair with fossil fuels and the challenges this addiction now presents - educating its visitors and perhaps offering the option to carbon offset journeys. For many small businesses, particularly at present, a recycling contract is an unaffordable luxury, so all their recyclable rubbish is collected as ‘General Waste’. This is such a waste! Businesses that are able to pay for separate recycling collection choose a variety of contractors, meaning many different lorries are visiting our high street each week. Perhaps there is a way for our local businesses to work together to share one contract? The efficiencies of scale could enable some businesses to save money, others would gain access to recycling and there would be a reduction in lorries visiting the town to collect waste. If Alresford was the first town to achieve this we would blaze a trail for others to follow, gain great publicity and truly earn the accolade ‘Greenest Town in Hampshire’.
What better way to promote our town than to give it another unique selling point as the ‘greenest’? Covid-19 has shown what a strong community we have. With the town council, voluntary groups and residents coming together, we quickly organised to provide residents with the support they needed during the lockdown. We can pull together again. So as we celebrate ‘Green Week’ at the end of September, we should be proud of our town’s green steps so far. Whether you are leaving the car at home, joining a nature walk, litter picking, creating wildlife corridors through your garden, harvesting your own produce, switching to low energy light bulbs or adopting a plant-based diet, keep doing what you’re doing. If you need more advice and ideas, or information on local companies and recycling schemes please visit www.newleafalresford.org and join us on Facebook and Instagram. Keep an eye on our social media accounts for information about Winchester Green Week events (27th Sept - 4th Oct).
But is this enough? When it comes to limiting the effects of climate change or claiming the title ‘greenest town’ the answer is the same: it’s a great start but no, it’s not enough. While much of the change required to tackle climate

Excellent access to the site was provided by Anthony Gay from Franklyn’s Fish Farm which greatly facilitated operations. This specific project has cost New Alresford Town Trust nearly £25,000, which has been raised from local donations and the Eel House Reserve Account. Hampshire County Council paid for the wooden “bridge” repairs amounting to £4,000.
New Alresford Town Trust Eel House As previously reported, since the major restoration of the Eel House in 2006/7 over 9,000 visitors have enjoyed the Open Days and learned about this unique building. However, following a survey by the Hampshire Footpaths Officer it was agreed that repairs were now needed to the brick culvert archways on the up-river side of the Eel House and also to the wooden footbridge they support. The three week repair project was completely successfully on 6th August by Cain-Bio Engineering and Jon Cranfield of Herpetologic

The fresh bakery stall, cheese and cooked meats stalls were unable to come over this time because of the increased ferry charge to £800., which with the lockdown in France as everywhere else, the cost was too much. As well as a variety of other stalls there was a French singer who entertained the crowds outside the Wessex Pharmacy.

and hope this will be the end of all major costs for the time being. The only sadness is that, under the present coronavirus restrictions, it is not possible to open to the public, but we very much hope that this will be possible before the end of this year – 27th September 2020 is a possible date. The footpaths around the Eel House need substantial reinstatement, and we understand HCC will do this in 2021!! The New Alresford Town Trust thanks the following for their generous financial and practical support on the Second Restoration of the Eel House in 2020, and in particular David Woods who has chaired and led the project for the last 14 years.
The event was organised by Trustee Pam Stevens together with Muriel Charles the Manager of France at Home, and without the hard work of Paddy Walshe moving barriers and red waterbutts to accommodate the stalls, the event would not have been possible. A big’Thank You to Paddy’. All the stallholders had a good and profitable day and “they would love to come back next
year as they find the people of Alresford and visitors to the Town very friendly and accommodating”. The shopkeepers in the Town especially Tesco Express with their early morning deliveries, were all very helpful and welcomed the extra people in the Town. I would like to thank all members of the public who attended the French Market at this difficult time, and hope you will continue to support the events the Town Trust are organising. I have provisionally booked the next French Market for 4th April 2021 (Easter Sunday) and lets hope things will have improved by then. As things stand the next event arranged by the Town Trust will be the Brocante Market to be held on Sunday 27th September, and possibly the restored Eel House will be opened along with the Museum at the bottom of Broad Street. Oxley’s Bookshop on Broad Street in Alresford turns seventy!
n 1950 Laurence and Ursula Oxley were living in a colonial style bungalow in Cheriton, when Laurence decided to purchase 17 Broad Street. The shop was much smaller then, as the space behind had been used for milking cows when it was Dedman’s Dairy. Their first alteration was to enlarge the front window so that Laurence could have a piano winched into it by crane. Ursula looked after the shop, selling antiques for the first years before antiquarian books began to take preference, with Laurence specialising in books about India. Gradually, a coterie of antiques shops was opened in Alresford - once as many as fourteen. The art side of the business was originally started to frame the pictures that Ursula, a trained artist, was creating. Glass for framing was sourced from old frames bought at sales! Later, Ursula cofounded the Alresford Art Society. As trade grew, George Watson took over the picture framing, which he ran for many years. He was responsible for the innovative and prize-winning stands built in the 1980’s for the Alresford Show. Laurence was one of the founders of the Alresford Historical and Literary Society, and its President for many years. He was also elected to Winchester council and gave talks and lectures to local societies. Alresford in the 1950s and 60s was less prosperous than it is now, and Laurence had to travel to buy and sell. This led to participation in international book fairs in Europe, Japan and the USA. It was around this time that he made the acquaintance of the Krugars who, when visiting Alresford, secretly collected classified information on micro-dotted papers left in the public loos opposite the Police Station. A frequent visitor was the commentator and raconteur John Arlott, who lived in East Street and took an interest in the history of and development threats to the town.

watercolours and maps. Oxley’s also published several books on the area, including a reprint of Duthy’s Sketches of Hampshire. During subsequent years, the gallery became devoted to watercolour pictures. Laurence’s son Anthony, a qualified Fine Art Guild Commended Framer, now runs the business and specialises in the work of Myles Birket Foster, RWS (1825-1899) and antique maps. The Studio behind the shop was rebuilt in 1999, and all framing is done there. These days most work is undertaken using conservation materials, and pictures are often protected with UV filtering Museum Glass – all unknown seventy years ago. The shop has faced new challenges over the last decade, but thanks to a commonly shared love of ‘real’ books, it appears to have seen off the threat of the e-book. Business rates recently became a great problem, and Oxley’s had its moment of fame last year when it was mentioned in a debate on the subject in the House of Commons. Thankfully, since reopening in June after an extraordinary twelveweek closure, Oxley’s loyal customers have returned, along with many new ones. After seventy years in business it will take more than a pandemic to see this bookshop off, and visitors are warmly welcomed! COMMUNITY
New Alresford Town Council will be replacing it with bike racks as we want to make cycling to town easier. Our noticeboards outside the Co-op and in the foyer at Arlebury Recreation Centre will continue to advertise our meetings and relevant information for residents, along with our website www. newalresford-tc.gov.uk
Grant success
Essential structural work to the Eel House is nearing completion. The Eel House is one of only two such buildings in existence in the UK and open days are always popular with visitors. In 2019 we were delighted to award the Town Trust £2000 towards these works. For more details about the restoration of the Eel House and its unique history, please visit www.towntrust.org.uk Perhaps like the Town Trust, your charity or community group could benefit from one of our grants We realise that some groups serving our residents may be struggling during these challenging times, and we would like to help. Previous awards include £1000 towards the purchase of a healthcare monitor located in the waiting room of Alresford Surgery for patients and residents; and £700 for new batteries and pads for defibrillators in Alresford. The next round of applications will be considered at the Town Council meeting on 27th October 2020. Please submit your application by 13th October 2020. For further information and an application form, please see our website.

Thank you volunteers We’d just like to say a massive thank you to all the wonderful volunteers for watering the new trees and hedgerow in Arlebury Park which were suffering due to an unseasonably dry spring. Thank you to Scott Cleeve of Cleeve Construction, Natta Building Company and local resident, Nick Syson. Have your say We’re really looking forward to welcoming you to our public exhibition on designs for a new playground at Stratton Bates Recreation Ground, on Thursday 10th September 2-7pm at the park. Government guidelines will be followed to ensure that the event is hosted safely. Please see the advertisement in this issue for full details. See you there! Around the town We’ve removed the noticeboard in Broad Street as it was in rather a sad state of repair. We
Leave no trace We are proud of our parks and open spaces. Our staff work tirelessly to keep them safe and clean. Despite our best efforts littering has increased. Empty nitrous oxide canisters are sadly an all too familiar sight in our parks. Some dog owners are failing to clean up after their pets, even though there are bins available. Unbelievably, we have had incidences of visitors using Arlebury Park and Memorial Gardens as a public convenience, even though the toilets in Station Road are open. The selfish actions of a few are preventing others from enjoying these lovely areas. Fly tipping Sadly, fly tippers have struck
again in Stratton Bates Rec Ground. We had hoped that the first incidence in May was a one off. Fly tipping is illegal and costs the taxpayer to clean up. If you have witnessed or have any information relating to this or any other fly tipping, please contact us or Winchester Community Safety Partnership www.winchester.gov.uk. However, if you witness fly tipping in progress, do not put yourself at any unnecessary risk. Household Waste Recycling Centres
Household Waste Recycling Centres are now up and running. They are now accepting chargeable waste: soil, rubble, and asbestos. Unfortunately, textiles are not currently being accepted, but please check as advice is subject to change at short notice. A pre-booking appointment system is now in operation and all vehicles must be registered online before your next visit for continued free access. Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

LOCAL
GOVERNMENT One issue hot on the heels of our precious countryside right now is (deep sigh) the apparent return of new town proposals which threaten a settlement the size of Petersfield on the beautiful Hampshire Downlands at Micheldever as the Local Plan refresh comes into view.
Steve Brine M.P Summer generally means TWO things for me; a staycation (this year in Northumberland which is stunning) and my constituency Summer Tour. Even in (what turned out to be) a General Election year, I take my trusty festival fold out chair and pull-up banner to various locations across the area for a series of socially distanced pop-up surgeries and events. We’ve already been to various locations across the constituency, including a pub and a supermarket, and I am pleased to say the Itchen Valley + Alresford is on the schedule this year. Please do keep an eye on, and get in touch with, Summer Tour 2020 via www.stevebrine.com/ summertour2020
Jackie’s County Corner for September This is the month where we’d usually be celebrating the Alresford and Littleton shows. Every day during the Covid-19 crisis, County Councillors have received an update -as I write we have 90 bulletins. ‘Business as Usual’ now means new challenges every day, and I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to our council staff, another group of unsung heroes in the community.Dial a Ride , Call & Go services have started up again: check by calling Rachel: 01962 852602 A ‘Keep Hampshire Safe’ data dashboard has been introduced to inform residents of the risks and number of cases in districts of Hampshire. My constituents will be entitled to ask how many times we have to say no to this daft idea which is neither needed or wanted. And for the record, I am not buying the argument of one Winchester Councillor who told the local paper it was a runner because “It (Micheldever) has a railway station”! Councillors running Winchester City need to show some courage and make clear it’s not appropriate and we won’t destroy the Downlands in the pursuit of profit for remote land owners and developers. I will be channelling local opinion, as always, to the Guildhall working once again with the excellent Dever Society. We should be aware that this development, were it to happen, would impact on Alresford and the Itchen Valley so please ask your local councillors about it and keep an eye on local press.
much on the agenda. It may be a baffling – and worrying - time as Covid remains but the Trust are pressing ahead with a big conversation about the future. Please take a look at the “Hampshire Together” programme because decisions are being taken now which will impact on our lives for many years to come; www.hampshiretogether.nhs.uk Eat Out to Help Out has been a real success in our area and nationally; I really enjoyed my time spent in Alresford last month (pictured) handing out window stickers and hearing how its going which I did with local Chamber Chair Fiona Isaacs. Finally, Parliament returns this month after its short Summer break and, with no conference season this year, it will be a long and complicated session towards Christmas. Please find me on Facebook for instant updates on my work locally and in Westminster; www.fb.com/ SteveBrineMP I hope you are all staying safe and well; be in touch anytime if you need me.

If you are finding it difficult to cope, please call the helpline: it’s there for you. After the shock and fear of the last few months, Winchester City Council is working towards the time when the children in our district can enjoy each other’s company local to home. The ‘Playing Out’ scheme provides reassurance that the road is being closed to traffic for a short while regularly making it much safer for children of all ages to play together , closely supervised by adults .Winchester is the first city in Hampshire to have taken part in this brilliant initiative. One group started a while ago, but we want more communities to take part, so I’m pleased that the Council is providing starter packs with
games and practical advice to parents who want to start ‘Playing Out’ for their own street or neighbourhood. If you are interested, please contact Mark at communities@winchester. gov.uk Good news! Hampshire has announced an extra £1million to top up the Government’s Gigabit broadband voucher scheme offering additional funding to households who need faster speeds. Details can be found on www. hampshiresuperfast broadband .com/top-up/ It will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, and to qualify, residents must live in a rural area, be unable to get speeds of 100Mbps and apply as a group of 2 or more premises. COMMUNITY Football will be our priority, but with that comes our wish to provide a positive and enjoyable environment for our players, family and friends. The club has evolved since last season and Alresford Town F.C. and Alresford Town Youth F.C. have aligned in order to offer a first-class football learning and development program with a pathway into the senior club.
New Season and a New Beginning
ATYFC girl’s under 16s youth team had a fantastic experience as Lauren Cheshire, Kellie Warren and Lauren Houck attended the end of season awards. The main thing to take from this survey is how important Alresford is to our community. How, now more than ever, our wonderful shops have stepped up to help everyone through this period. Proving that unlike some communities we had the strength to get through this together. Keeping parking the way it is with mixed free and paid is what the public want and need to keep helping our wonderful businesses that make Alresford so unique. Thank you to all 604 households who replied. These results will be shared to parking groups and councils. Stay safe and keep shopping.

EDUCATION our provision for boarding and day students and touch on the ethos of the Sixth Form at Godolphin, which supports the success of our students during Sixth Form study and beyond.
Godolphin Sixth Virtual Welcome Evening This year, our popular Sixth Form Welcome Evening is going virtual, with an interactive online event that showcases the very best of what the Sixth Form at Godolphin has to offer. The event, which will run through the Zoom platform, will be hosted by the Head of Sixth Form at Godolphin, David Hallen, who will give you an overview of the myriad of the exciting and engaging academic, pastoral and co-curricular opportunities available to all of our Sixth Form students. He will also outline the way the Sixth Form operates day to day,
Godolphin’s Academic Deputy, Chris Hillman, will also present a breakdown of the academic options available as well as offer an update on our recent exam successes and an overview of the current academic landscape. We are rightly proud of our outstanding track record of results in the Sixth Form, and the Virtual Welcome Evening is a great opportunity for you to see how your academic ambitions can be fulfilled with us. Of course, the academic aspect of the Sixth Form experience is only part of the story, and you’ll have the opportunity to hear about our highly regarded Elizabeth Godolphin Award, which is at the heart of our Sixth Form offer. Each student participates in this programme, which includes modules on entrepreneurship, contemporary politics and world affairs, online safety, study skills, equality, diversity and inclusion and personal empowerment. This not only by delivering an alternative learning programme last term but also by providing centre assessed grades so that each individual student gets the results that they deserve. Parents too deserve to be acknowledged and thanked. The strong sense of community at Godolphin, so often commented upon, has helped us all through these challenging times.
Excellent Results at Godolphin, for an exceptional year We are very pleased to announce that once again Godolphin students have worked with dedication and purpose during their time in the Sixth Form and have gained an excellent set of results. A great deal of hard work has gone into the awarding of these grades and we are incredibly proud of all that they have achieved. This has been the most crucial time of their school careers and our students deserve to be judged fairly. Teaching staff have given their time and energy throughout the year,

Rightly, the focus now turns to next steps for our leavers, and we are pleased to say that the vast majority have achieved the places they need to further their education on courses of their choice. We have students with confirmed places to go on to study diverse subjects ranging from French and Spanish to Physics; Commercial Music to Engineering; Actuarial Science to Fine Art; Biological Sciences to Ancient History and Classical Civilisation; Psychology to History of Art; and Economics to English.
programme regularly includes appearances from guest speakers and experts in their fields, and you’ll be able to hear from one of our students about the positive and lasting impact it has, when delivered alongside an engaging course of study. Our Head of Bright Futures will also be presenting at this live event, giving an overview of our careers provision, which offers a tremendous range of support for progression to university, apprenticeships, further study and employment. At Godolphin, we really do believe that your Sixth Form experience is an education for life, and our Virtual Welcome Evening is a great opportunity to start planning for your future with us. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions in a live Q&A, and to arrange live visits and discussions following the event. in appropriate qualifications. There have been outstanding performances from Georgina Clark, Maisie Molyneux, Brigitte Han, Isobel Horsfield, Cecilia Lockyer, Olivia Bai and Rachel Xu. As further detail is available regarding the appeals process, especially on the basis of mock grades, we will continue to evaluate the statistical process used to determine the grades, and proceed accordingly.
These courses will be studied at a range of Universities including Oxford, Birmingham, UCL, Durham, Exeter, Warwick, Bristol, University of the Arts London, LSE and Edinburgh.
Head, Emma Hattersley, commented “these students have shown great fortitude, especially over the past six months. It is only right now that their diligence and sheer hard graft over the last two years is recognised by the examination boards, enabling them to move on to the next stage of their lives with confidence. This was a bright year group so I am pleased that in the main, their efforts have been rewarded, although I do have concerns as to how some of the grades have been calculated. Now is a time for calmness and student support as we work through the statistics and understand the implications for each individual. I am immensely proud of them all.”
Although the statistical process imposed by the examination boards has both increased and decreased some grades we are able to report an excellent set of overall results with 25% A* grades and 50% A* to A, including Distinctions
