We had several quotes & design suggestions from other companies before meeting Ben. From the first meeting we were impressed with Ben’s understanding of our needs & he gave us excellent practical ideas. We particularly liked that he was able to show us samples there and then, without the need to visit a show room. Dan & Mitch (our fitters) were brilliant- they were friendly, respectful of our home, involved us in decisions along the way and, without doubt, made the process far less stressful than we imagined it would be! We have been recommending Happy Kitchens to everyone we’ve shown off our fantastic new kitchen to. Thanks so much guys - Mr Fog
At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

Garden
GARDEN WEED CONTROL CAN BE CHALLENGING, LET’S UNDERSTAND WHY
twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die. Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing the weed. So why don't selective herbicides kill the useful plants we are trying to grow? The main reason is because the useful plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive.
When to use weed killers
W
hen I first began studying plant science I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed’? The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticide to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue. Weeds can be relatively small like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed like grasses, broad-leafed liked dandelions or woody like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide. Pesticides used for treating weeds are often called herbicides. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds, typically either broad-leafed or grass-like weeds. Nonselective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied onto existing lawns, but will control only broadleaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact on grasses.
How weed killers work
Some work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth,
12 12
Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective, however the results will take longer.
How to use
Weed plants fall into different families. Much like sprouts and cabbage are different plants but within the same group of plants, some weeds are in the same family group and some in different groups. Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed.
Is one application enough?
If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time then often one application is enough. However some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present. Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. For effective lawn weed control speak to a lawn care professional. Ian Kenyon owns Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services. He is always happy to offer friendly, professional advice and help 01962 460146, 07739 789483 www.shrekfeet.com

Lighting-up Time
T
BY CLAIRE THURLOW here was a time when I lived in Vermont, one of the smallest states in the USA, located in the north-east of the country just below the Canadian border. One of the pleasures of summer was to sit in the screened-in porch, enjoying the evening air, but safe from incessant mosquitoes, and wait for the fireflies to come out. Imagine a gnat wearing an LED light and you’ve got a firefly. Only once night had fallen did the fireflies appear, dozens of dancing specks of light which lit the pitch-black garden like a party of Tinkerbells. You’re unlikely to see ‘fireflies’ in England unless your neighbour has strung fairy-lights in the trees, but you might see a close relative – the glow-worm. Unlike those creatures where the male of the species uses a bit of flash to beguile a mate, with glow-worms it’s the female who goes all out to attract attention. While the males are winged with hard, beetle-like backs, the females look like larvae – soft as a marshmallow and wingless. So far, so unremarkable. But as the female spends her short life confined to a few metres of ground, and her day-time look is a discreet, subdued brown, Nature has given her a clever way to stand out. Thanks to a chemical reaction between oxygen in the air and enzymes in the glowworm’s body, she can activate a ‘lantern’ in her abdomen and literally light up her rear end. This vivid green, pulsing bioluminescence can be switched on and off at will, either to attract a mate or to startle enemies. Once a mate has been found, eggs are often laid on open ground, and the newly hatched larvae must crawl to the shelter of vegetation with due haste. With luck, they’ll reach a ready food supply of slugs and snails. larvae can manage a brief glow, although it’s rather feeble compared to their mother, whose light can be seen up to 50 metres away. Sadly, the population of glow-worms across Europe has declined over the last 70 years, but they can still be found in England on the chalky grassland of the Downs.Their habitat also includes hedgerows, railway embankments, heathlands and cliffs. People lucky enough to live in areas of low light pollution may come across them when walking in the countryside after dark. But they’ll have to be patient, as glow-worms often don’t show up until after 10pm in mid-summer. Artificial light confuses the males who mistake it for a possible female, heading for lampposts and security lights instead of potential mates. On the bright side (no apology for the pun!), in recent years glow-worms have been spotted in churchyards, gardens, parks and campsites across the south. One farmer even reported seeing one on the back of a sheep and another behind a pig’s ear. There have been sightings in villages around Winchester, as well as St Catherine’s Hill, East Meon and the New Forest. Stockbridge Down, Burlesdon and Havant Thicket also seem to be regular haunts. Whether this summer will be a success for the glowworms remains to be seen, but given suitable, undisturbed habitat and a healthy diet of slugs and snails, we can be optimistic. They can be seen from late May to September, but are most visible in June and July. There is even a world Firefly Day on July 7, so I will be out with my torch checking the log-pile, in the hope of catching a glimpse of the luminous glow-worm.

Community HAMPSHIRE TO NICE (1150 MILE) CYCLE CHALLENGE - AGE CONCERN HAMPSHIRE’S CHAIR TO RAISE VITAL FUNDS FOR THE VILLAGE AGENT SERVICE
T
he Chair of Age Concern Hampshire, Tony Hopkins will be taking on a huge sponsored cycling challenge to raise vital funds for the Hampshire Village Agent Service. The Village Agent Service was set up in 2011, funded for many years by Hampshire County Council, and is delivered by over 50 highly-trained volunteer Village Agents across the county. Their primary role is to enable older people to live independently, for as long as possible, in their own homes. Tony, who is a volunteer Village Agent himself, has decided to cycle 1,150 miles from Hampshire to Nice. He will be setting off on 25 May and will be calling in en-route at our Lockswood Day Centre, where he’s expected to receive a warm reception by all the staff and clients at the centre as they cheer him on his way. This is a mammoth cycle challenge that Tony is undertaking, as he will be making his way down to Portsmouth ferry port with his friend winding through the beautiful Hampshire countryside. After crossing over to Saint-Malo they will then embark on their 3 week cycle across France to Nice. As if this wasn’t challenging enough they will also be completely self-supported and carrying all their own equipment and supplies - no guide and no support van following behind. Fundraising for the Village Agent Service Tony is raising funds for our volunteer Village Agent Service. The costs of managing it relies solely on funds raised directly by Age Concern Hampshire and it is crucial that we continue to find ways to ensure that we continue delivering this vital service. Tony Hopkins says “Working as a Village Agent myself in Crondall and Ewshot, I really appreciate the fantastic work that all out volunteers do and want to raise as much money as possible to keep this incredible service going. I feel so passionately about the work that we do, that I would like to personally contribute– I will donate £100 for every £500 generously donated to my fundraising page.” To show your support and to make a donation, please visit his Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tony-hopkins-cycle For more information about Age Concern Hampshire and to getinvolved visit www.ageconcernhampshire.org.uk For all the latest updates on Tony’s bike ride follow his progress on our Facebook page. Denise and Fiona are the local Age Concern Hampshire ‘Village Agent’ volunteers for Alresford. Please call either of them on 07969 376023 if you would like any information on local services (or if unavailable call Age Concern Hampshire on 0800 328 7154). JACKIE’S COUNTY CORNER FOR JUNE
T
he weather has warmed up at last! But it was chilly for our third Dawn to Dusk Day on The Watercress Way- a 26 mile circular route based on the old railway lines in this area. Events included a Dawn Chorus Walk, and a Flora and History Walk later in the day.You can see more about the purpose and progress of the charity on www.thewatercressway.org.uk. If you’d like to know more, you can sign up to become a Friend of the Line to receive around 4 emails a year on progress. We welcome donations online too! This year’s elections brought new councillors to the team, and reelected others. I am pleased to say that Margot Power will hold a Councillor’s surgery in Alresford on the first Friday of each month. (I hold surgeries in Kings Worthy and Alresford and can visit you if those aren’t convenient) The County Council owns many countryside areas and has been refurbishing some of the facilities. Apparently visitor numbers are all about the View, the Brew and the Loo! Lepe is a particular favourite of ours and the new facilities (due to be open for the school holidays) are a great improvement. You can see more on www.hants.gov.uk/thingstodo I receive many requests from residents to reduce speeds outside their homes and on school routes. I am often asked for a 20mph limit for villages and I hope the results of the year-long pilot will be published soon, so we can move forward on this. But even if the limits are in place, do drivers observe them? Light-up signs warn us- but records show many drivers exceeding the limit. The Micheldever 20mph pilot (to make it safer to walk in a village without footways) is observed by only some. Itchen Stoke’s active Speedwatch programme has resulted in nearly 500 drivers receiving warnings in the last few months alone. The Police cannot be expected to sit awaiting speeding cars, so is this a matter where we all must take responsibility? I would welcome your views on this issue. The County Council has just changed its policy on provision of transport to school for primary school children. The current school transport policy stands for 2018. However, if your child is due to start school in September 2019, this will affect you. If your child needs to use the school bus, the County Council will not be obliged to provide transport until the term after your child is 5: which is difficult for rural residents and a particular problem for ‘summer babies’. Please contact me if this concerns you and your family. For those of you who use the Cart and Horses junction, you will be pleased to hear that the proposed 40mph speed limit has been advertised for implementation. Some progress at last! Cllr. BRITTEN – WAR REQUIEM, THE ANVIL, BASINGSTOKE
L
ifelong pacifist Benjamin Britten was asked to compose his War Requiem for the consecration of the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral in 1962 after its destruction in World War II. The work weaves together the Latin Mass text of a traditional requiem with the devastating war poetry of Wilfred Owen to produce a powerful denunciation of the wickedness of war and a warning to future generations of the senselessness of taking up arms against one’s fellow man. 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the Great War, the “war to end all wars” according to H G Wells, and many choirs across the country will be giving performances of Britten’s timeless message of peace and denunciation of war in this year. Basingstoke Choral Society, Southampton Philharmonic Choir, Southampton University Philharmonic Choir and the City of Southampton Orchestra combine their considerable resources for this unique performance. They will be joined by a children’s choir from the Pilgrims’ School, Winchester, along with the internationally renowned London Mozart Players at the Anvil, Basingstoke on Saturday 9 June. Full details of the event can be found by visiting www.war-requiem2018.uk
F
awley Farm Feeds (Privett, GU34) are once again running their very popular and successful Horse & Dog Show, this year it will be on Sunday 1st July 2018. F.O.W.M.S. (Friends of West Meon School) are delighted to have been asked, once again, to support this great family event by running a ‘Fun on the Field’ family day at the same time, using the other side of the field to the horse rings. The very large field will be split in half with the horse show and competitions on one side and the dog show and family day on the other. We are looking to have a large variety of stands and exhibitors together with lots of fun games – a day for everyone, young and old to enjoy! Amongst our games and stands will be CM Sports with a fun inflatable obstacle course amongst other things, Spirited Adventure will be back with their very popular bushcraft demonstrations and skills, The Southdown Bloodhounds, ferret racing, facepainting, crockery smashing, welly wanging, tombolas for all, craft stalls, handmade goods, small animal petting, children’s have a go sand art - the list goes on….and on! In addition, there will be a fantastic BBQ, teas, coffees and cakes, ice cream van and a Beer, Cider and Pimms tent to keep everyone happy! A bit about F.O.W.M.S. – we are raising funds towards revamping the IT suite at our small village school, as well as continuing to improve our outdoor Nature Station near the railway line in West Meon. Last year, due in part to the generosity of Andrea & Matt Povey at Fawley Farm Feeds, we were able to commit to building work on our school that would otherwise have been impossible – this will be starting late Spring of this year. Please put July 1st in your diary and come and have some fun!!! The first horse class is at 9am with the Dog Show starting at 12 o’clock.

There will be a ‘Hampshire Remembers’ remembrance wall, where we extend an invitation to all participants to dedicate their attendance at the concert to anyone of any nationality adversely affected by any war by adding a personal message to the wall. “My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity… All a poet can do today is warn.” Wilfred Owen

Originally created to sustain the wealthy aristocrats between lunch and late dinner, the idea came from Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford, a lifelong friend of Queen Victoria. Comprising delicately cut finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, sweet pastries and cakes, this long standing tradition of afternoon tea can be the perfect way to celebrate with family and friends. “Afternoon tea is a great way to catch up with special people or to combine a business meeting with some delicious tea and scones,” commented Sarah Waddington, Holiday Inn Winchester’s Sales and

Pretty Woman “S HAMPSHIRE BUSINESS
ometimes in life, despite everything, you just have to go with your instinct.” So, when Selina decided that her chosen career path in business and IT was not for her, even though she had only recently graduated, she returned to her first love.
“I had always been enthralled with the world of beauty, so I left my job and went to train as a beauty therapist at a private college in Wokingham. I haven’t regretted it for a moment.” It was some nine years ago that Selina opened her beauty salon, Pretty Woman, in Alton. It has proved to be a phenomenal success, winning the coveted Salon of the Year Award (South East) in 2014, while Selina won Beauty Therapist of the Year in 2013 at the English Hair & Beauty Awards.
24
In 2017, although by now a busy mother of two children under five, Selina realised her dream of opening a second salon.
“I had been planning it for some time, and when I returned from maternity leave I realised that the time was right; I had a fantastic, dedicated and highly professional team of ten who I can trust and rely on. When the premises in East Street in Alresford became available I jumped at the opportunity.” The commitment and investment required to convert the building into Pretty Woman Alresford was enormous, but standing in the reception area, which has the calm atmosphere of a luxurious spa, Selina has clearly taken it in her stride.
“We have four treatment rooms and a steam room with adjacent shower facilities. I have highly qualified and experienced therapists, many of whom are based in both Alton and Alresford. We have two trainees and it’s wonderful to see them benefitting from such an experienced team. Their growth and development is rewarding for everyone. That really is the essence of Pretty Woman – we are all a team, with no hierarchy, and everyone sharing the day to day tasks of managing and improving two salons. The ethos of Pretty Woman is to deliver the very best beauty therapy using the highest quality products in the most luxurious surroundings. I can’t stress enough that at Pretty Woman we believe in enhancing natural beauty and we don’t do treatments which we consider invasive. We use the ESPA range for our facials and body treatments, which contain only the purest botanicals and essential oils. Also, we have the famous Guinot range from France.”
The team at Pretty Woman has been kept busy since the salon opened in 2017. “We held a launch party, offering demonstrations and mini-treatments and everyone who attended received a special goodie bag with some of our products. It was amazing! We had such a good response, with far more people attending than we had imagined. It was a busy evening and, to be honest, it hasn’t slowed down from that moment onwards.” Selina’s professionalism, optimism and drive were well rewarded when Pretty Woman was awarded the prestigious Overall Salon of the Year Award 2017 for both Alton and Alresford. What next for Selina and Pretty Woman? A third salon, perhaps? Selina laughs. “Not yet. But we do have plans to enlarge the Alresford salon. So, watch this space!” For further information on all treatments available from Pretty Woman call 01962 736888 or visit www.pretty-woman-salon.co.uk

Wellbeing ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS
Carers Week – 11th- 17th June Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is. This Carers Week, we’re coming together to build communities that support the health and wellbeing of carers. Around 6.5 million people in the UK are carers, looking after a parent, partner, child or friend. A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older. Caring can be a hugely rewarding experience but sometimes carers find it challenging to take care of their own well-being whilst caring. The impact of caring on health and well-being should not be underestimated this Carers week we will be looking to share examples of good practice from supporters of which have helped carers to stay Healthy and Connected. Find out how you can get involved in Carers Week to help carers to stay Healthy and Connected. https://www.carersweek.org/get-involved Princess Carers Trust for Carers in Hampshire The work we do is varied and is tailored to the needs of each individual carer. Our focus is on giving carers accurate and up to date information on anything from disability aids to benefit claims. We also run special support groups, act as carers’ advocates. Liaise with Adult Services, GP’s, hospitals and the Benefits Agency amongst others and offer free counselling to carers by way of qualified voluntary counsellors. Carer Support and Information Who is a carer? A carer is someone who, without payment, looks after or provides help and support to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour who could not manage without that help. This could be because of age, physical or mental illness, addiction or disability. Anyone can become a carer. Carers come from all walks of life, all cultures, and can be of any age. Many carers do not consider themselves to be 'a carer'. They are just looking after, e.g. their mother, son, or best friend, just getting on with it without a second thought. Many carers also work outside the home and are trying to juggle jobs with their responsibilities as carers. Taking on a caring role can mean facing a life of poverty, isolation, frustration, ill health and depression. The majority of carers struggle alone and do not know what help is available. We are here to help. Call on 01264 835246 Alzheimer’s Cafes We facilitate Alzheimer's Cafes in Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester. The cafes provide an informal and relaxed atmosphere where carers can come along with their cared-for, together with any family or friends and enjoy a light snack and a drink. Informative talks and various other social events are held throughout the year. For more information contact 01264 835246 Carer Support Clinics Do you care for someone? oon to be up and running: a new voluntary group called ‘Friends of St John's in Alresford’, dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of this ancient and special building in the centre of our town.
There is a growing recognition that the church is not just a place of worship. Together with the adjoining John Pearson Hall and extensive grounds, St John’s is a focal point for the artistic, cultural and social life of the town, and provides tranquil havens for quiet contemplation. Voluntary groups particularly value its usefulness for all sorts of gatherings. Between them these spaces also play a key part at certain important moments in the lives of all of us, whether or not we have a religious affiliation, and at times of national celebration and remembrance. They always have done. To maintain its many roles in the life of the Town requires considerable expenditure of money and human energy, more than the regular church-goers can provide after funding its religious mission (at a current cost of £150,000 a year). The aim of the Friends will be to raise additional funds and recruit voluntary assistance for the ongoing preservation and improvement of the fabric of the buildings and land so that they continue to contribute to the life of the Town. The congregation (250 members) will continue to run and fund the Church as a Church, and the Friends will not subsidise religious activities. There are very many in the Town who enjoy seasonal celebrations and use the amenities for purely secular purposes, often providing all sorts of support for its maintenance, preservation and conservation, for whom until now there has been no regular or organised opportunity to contribute to the costs. This is the gap the Friends will fill, channelling the yield from fundraising, that will include events and activities, and focussing on projects where the need is greatest and the result most welcome to both Town and Church. ALRESFORD RUGBY CLUB
O
ur pre season starts in August so will be obviously bothering you again in July! Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to next season and we are so grateful to you and your team to allow us to have such brilliant advertising and coverage. For next months issue I would be grateful if you could publish this.
The 2017/18 season has come to a close, and both the ones and two's have done our club proud. The First's finished 7th with 43 points in Snows Group Hants 1(after promotion last year!) and the Seconds finished 8th with 29 points in Solent Lge 2. Both sides have achieved what we wanted this year, but being ARFC, we don't want 7th and 8th next season. We will always want 1st and 1st. We have had our Awards Dinner and the well deserved recipients were the following: Silly Falker - Elliot Holmes, Tourist Of The Year -Phil Fountain, 2nd Team Top Try Scorer -Kato Herbert, 1st Team Top Try Scorer - Ethan Green, Wags Award from the Touchline - Shem Abraham Young, 2nd Team Man of the Match Award - Tom Brooks, 1st Team Man of the Match Award - Billy Lovegrove, 2nd Team Most Improved - Antony Trigwell, 1st Team Most Improved -Tom Brookes, The Alex Whatley Award..Young Player of the Year Ethan Green, 2nd Team Player of the Year - Calum Ross, 1st Team Player of the Year - Tom Andrews, Clubman of the Year - Scott Cleeve Thank you again, to all of you that come and support, to the committee members, to all you little minis, to the wives and girlfriends that do so much and put up with so much, to our invaluable sponsors, to Alresford Forum, and everyone that loves our/your rugby club...thank you.
Alresford District Friends Of Girlguiding are holding a Tea Party with stalls at Ropley Village Hall on Thursday July 12th from
Finally, our two senior coaches are stepping down this year. Scott Cleeve and Cain Price. I have never met two more passionate and dedicated people in any walk of life, let alone a rugby club. If you are lucky enough to see these guys over the summer, please, speak to them, shake their hand and say thank you. Without them, who knows where we might be.
3pm. Please come and enjoy tea and homemade cake, buy a raffle ticket or two, have a go on the tombola, games for the children. By supporting this event you will be helping our local Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and their adult leaders. We look forward to seeing you on July 12th, thank you in anticipation.
On behalf of ARFC, I wish you all a fantastic summer and we look forward to going head to head with all in the new league next season. Pre season games will start in August. Keep an eye on our website and in The Forum.

ALRESFORD VOLUNTARY CARE GROUP
T
he Alresford Voluntary Care Group (AVCG) was set up some 45 years ago to help local people get to their hospital, GP and other medical appointments, in particular for those who are elderly, infirm or just not able to drive. The group provides a valuable service to the local community currently carrying out almost 1,000 journeys each year over half of which are to Alresford Surgery, with most of the remainder to the hospitals in Winchester, Southampton and Basingstoke. Most appointments are scheduled between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Volunteer drivers use their own cars, transporting people from their homes to their appointments, and where necessary, helping them to the appropriate department at the hospital or surgery. Drivers receive a hospital parking permit and a payment to cover their fuel costs, plus, of course, the satisfaction of knowing that they are providing a valuable community service and helping people less able than themselves. The ‘clients’ themselves make a donation towards the cost of fuel. The AVCG operates a ‘pool’ of drivers that can be asked to provide transport by one of the telephone co-ordinators; these are the volunteers that customers speak to when they need to arrange transport to the surgery or hospital. With the gradual reduction in home visits by GPs, and the cutting back of hospital transport services, the number of requested journeys continues to grow steadily, by 17% last year. As a result, the AVCG would like to recruit new drivers, so if you have a couple of hours to spare each month, and would like to help your local community, please contact 01962 736016 or 734408, or email david@ casapequena.net to find out more about this worthwhile voluntary work.

ALRESFORD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Scams
Scams affect the lives of millions of people across the UK and it appears the number of people affected is growing, as the criminals develop more ingenious ways to scam the population. People who are scammed often experience shame and social isolation as a result. • • • •
Scams come in many forms; uninvited contact is received by email, letter, and telephone or in person, making false promises to con victims out of money. There are many scams, but the most common are fake lotteries, deceptive prize draws or sweepstakes, clairvoyants, computer scams, and romance scams. The criminals attempt to trick people with flashy, official looking documents or websites, or convincing telephone sales patter, with the aim of persuading them to send a processing or administration fee, pay postal or insurance costs or make a premium rate phone call. Doorstep Scams are crimes carried out by bogus callers, rogue traders and unscrupulous sales people who call, often uninvited, at people’s home under the guise of legitimate business or trade.
Nearly half of people in the UK have been targeted by a scam. One of the ways that scammers commonly contact people is through the post. The most common sorts of scams letters are scam lottery letters, fake prize draws and misleading clairvoyant letters. Once somebody has responded to one letter they get added to a list and their details are sold onto other criminals, who will then target them and send more letters. To be clear, scams are FRAUD and fraud is a CRIME! People who fall victim to scams are victims of crime and financial abuse within their own homes.
What can we do about this
When we come into personal contact with any of the above scams we should always ignore them, whilst reporting them to the police and Action Fraud - https://actionfraud.police.uk . However, we can’t act in isolation, and to make a real difference to this issue and help those at risk of being targeted we need to work in partnership. To achieve this we need to increase scams awareness with our families and friends, especially those more vulnerable to this criminal activity. We need to look out for our neighbours and our local people and check for the tell-tale signs of scams. When people suffer fromn a scam we need to take away the loneliness, the shame and the stigma from victims and talk about scams so we can all learn from these terrible events. If you would like furthr information please visit the website: www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk ‘Friends Against Scams’ is a National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to "Take a Stand Against Scams". Thank you for your support!

any readers of the FORUM will share my passion for cycling and my frustration that Winchester – and surrounding area - is not yet the safe cycling space it could be. As someone who cycles whenever I get the chance, and as a Dad of two, it was therefore easy to put my support behind Cycle Winchester which had its launch last month with a ‘cycle train’ around the city centre and a rally in Abbey Gardens where I spoke. Cycle Winchester is an initiative by the Winchester Cycle Working Group, backed by Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC), Friends of the Earth Winchester, the City of Winchester Trust and Winchester CTC. The group aims to promote cycling as a convenient, healthy and inexpensive way to get around Winchester, which reduces congestion, pollution and makes Winchester a better place to live, work and visit. What’s not to like. Cycle Winchester is a really positive idea and, like all great ideas, it’s amazing it didn’t exist before. As a keen cyclist, and as England’s Public Health Minister, I am full square behind anything which aids the active lives and prevention agenda, especially around tackling obesity. Equally, so many of us want to see cleaner air in Winchester – and across the country – so our ambition for a massive increase in the number of journeys made by bike, is extremely welcome. Our recently published Cycling and Walking Strategy makes good reading so do search for that online and look out for our landmark Clean Air Strategy to be published for consultation shortly. I have offered Cycle Winchester my full support and look forward to working with them as we seek a transformation of the local environment towards a more safe cycle friendly city. The current Winchester Movement Study is I think a real opportunity for us to grasp this nettle and it’s great we have cross-party support to face this. You can see more – and watch a short video – at www.stevebrine. com/cyclewinchester Finally, I have been greatly moved by the response to our announcement last month of new work to safeguard children with alcohol-dependent parents after measures, including £6 million in funding, were revealed which will help identify at-risk children more quickly, and provide them with rapid access to support and advice. furniture to the smallest ceramic, are treated with reverence. For Jonathan and Iain these are muchloved pieces, with a quality of craftsmanship and history which only experts like them can really know; monetary ‘value’ is almost secondary. Jonathan came to Bellmans Winchester via a complex route: from Phillips in Edinburgh where he worked as a porter in the mid-90s, to Sotheby’s in Billingshurst in Sussex. He now lives in Petersfield where he loves to walk his dogs along the lanes to The Harrow pub in Steep, near Petersfield. He became Managing Director of Bellmans in 2005, commuting to the Sussex saleroom, and now spends one day per week valuing and cataloguing jewellery in Winchester. Jonathan specializes in jewellery and makes regular appearances on the BBC’s Antiques Road Trip, Bargain Hunt and Flog It, yet you get the impression that he is most at home surrounded by wonderful antiques in the Bellmans’ salerooms. Iain and Jonathan seem to be Yin and Yang; while Iain methodically unwraps, inspects and gently places each new article, Jonathan overflows with unique and infectious enthusiasm for much-loved items of the past.
I
meet Jonathan Pratt FGA FRICS and his senior director, Iain Rushbrook, in one of the viewing rooms at The Red House, Hyde Street in Winchester. The room reminds me of the Cast Room at the V&A or perhaps the Hogwarts ‘Room of Requirement’, overflowing with treasures. While we talk, Iain is unwrapping yet more items. Memories of the auction houses of my youth are of stuffy (can you really afford to be in here?) rooms filled with items you dare not touch. Thank goodness that times have changed! Whether you’re browsing the beautiful collections on Bellmans’ website, or sitting amongst them, one thing is clear: all the items, from the largest piece of
40
“I simply don’t understand why people would buy new, spending their hard-earned incomes on cheap, poorly made furniture that won’t last!” He gesticulates around the room. “Yes, of course some antiques can be expensive, and people buy them as collectors’ pieces or as an investment. But if you want reasonable, very well-made furniture in an array of beautiful woods, you don’t have to spend a fortune. One could easily furnish a small terraced house for a thousand pounds. The furniture you choose says something about you as an individual – your sense of design and style. These pieces around us here have a history; they were much loved and are just waiting to be again! Sir David Attenborough has said we should all be recycling to ensure our future, that’s what we do here; we up-cycle.”
Iain feels likewise: “I have a stunning bureau in my hall at home and every time I walk by it I have to stand and admire, it gives me such pleasure.” Jonathan is acutely aware of the heritage of his profession. “Prior to the millennium many of our market towns and smaller cities would have had antique shops and an auction room from whom people were happy to buy. But the rise in consumption of new furniture meant that many antique businesses closed. Everyone wanted to go modern, it seemed. Now we are beginning to see the upturn in buying good quality and pre-loved items; in an age of recycling they are very much in vogue. There is
a danger, however, that anyone can call themselves an ‘auctioneer’ without even being qualified. Here at Bellmans we pride ourselves on working with the very best specialist valuers and auctioneers, offering the utmost in professionalism.” “There are a multitude of reasons why people want to sell items, not least because of bereavement, so it is crucial that people can trust those that come to do valuation and house clearances. We are in such a privileged position that our customers trust us completely, that is so very important to us.”

Jonathan points to a stunning rectangular mirror, with a fretwork frame: “I’ve got my eye on that, it’s exactly what I need for my bathroom. It will probably fetch £40 – 60. It’s George II. Where could you find that quality for that price on the high street?”
Jonathan glances down to the mirror again, “I really do want that, it’s perfect!” Is there a dream find for Jonathan? He laughs, “Yes a blue diamond! But that’s highly unlikely!” winchester@bellmans.co.uk sussex@bellmans.co.uk www.bellmans.co.uk 41

Hampshire Mum Rebellion
ecently I was at a lovely dinner party – really lovely, but towards the end of the evening it was clear that the men had remained at the dining table happily quaffing red wine and port. Over on the comfy sofa, there we were, the women, sipping water and various soft drinks. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not a complaint, just an epiphany. If we women had been living in another culture we would have been clad in black, making baskets or lace, but still waiting for our men. Different culture, same story. Actually, it’s not about the drink, but rather that probably none of the men present would have sat on a comfy sofa and drunk water while we women had a few drinks. It’s simply the way it is. I figure it’s fine, and that most of my subservient habits are my own fault. I live with four males (if you include the dog), and trust me, they need looking after. But the winds of change are building in the Pagan household. The golf season is upon us again, Star I, now with lovely girlfriend, is flying off here and there, and Star II will likewise be cycling off hither and thither; and so they should be. Meanwhile I’m available for coffee, events, weddings, light cooking and laundry duties and, of course, endless loo cleaning. Post comfy sofa epiphany I thought: ‘Hang on just one minute- what AM I doing?’ All our lives seem to pass by so very quickly, so I made a pact with myself. While the cats are away this mouse will play – in short – Rebellion. First stop our Market Town’s emporium of beauty. I don’t remember, as my feet will testify, the last time I had a pedicure. As I reclined there, having the final coat of ‘Tropical Coral’ applied, it just popped out of my mouth: “Do you do piercing?” I had my ears pierced at Top Shop Oxford Circus when I was sixteen. The girl who did it was no expert with the gun so the hole back and front didn’t line up but sloped downward. It never really healed so I gave up, resorting to the occasional Bette Lynch clip-ons.
44
So a week later, having paid up front to prevent crying off, my giggly Consultant chum joined me to witness the ritual, I felt more secure with a medic on hand. Although being a Consultant in Sexual Health I wasn't sure she would know what to do with ear lobes. However with the paper work done and the discreet ‘diamond’ studs chosen, quick as a flash it was done. I was a fully pierced-up member of society! But do you know, post a quick trip to the chemist to purchase a litre of TCP, I felt amazingly liberated, that well-known post rebellion feeling? The pain of piercing, quick though it was, was releasing and for a moment I understood the whole enjoyment of the pain gained through tattooing…so they say. A tattoo? At 57? Not a chance! No, I’m working my way up to real diamond studs, same price but look better on flabby flesh. I didn’t tell The Husband or the kids, happy in the knowledge that I could walk through the house wearing half a pantomime horse outfit and they would still ask ‘what’s for tea Mum’. It would be weeks before they noticed…or so I thought. Five days later sitting at supper Star II was stunned, “God Mum, you’ve had a PIERCING!!” Now who would have thought this could be such bad news? I wasn’t sporting a pair of stretchers, tongue or eyebrow studs, (all fine if that’s your choice), just simple tiny earrings. Then The Husband uttered the immortal words, ‘ When did you have that done? Don’t you think you should have consulted the family first’. That was right up there with ‘let them eat cake’. Stand by Pagans, rebellion starts off small but can grow to revolution! What next for Sandra Pagan? Leaving my hair to go curly that’s what! Oooh what a rebel I am! Sandra Pagan

EXCITING TIMES AT 345 PRE-SCHOOL!
NEW ALRESFORD TOWN TRUST ANOTHER FIVE YEARS
45, the pre-school in the heart of the Alresford community, has some exciting news for the next generation of Forum readers! From this September, Taryn and her dedicated team of staff are very excited to announce that they will be extending their opening hours and offering places to children from 2 ½ years of age. The new hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.30 am until 3.00 pm enabling families to better juggle a busy life with the demands of finding a high quality and experienced early years setting.Younger children have a very different set of emotional and social needs to the 3+ year olds, however the 345 team already have staff with a wealth of experience with the younger age group. They are poised to help the younger children at the very start of their learning journey.
am Stevens was unanimously co-opted as a NATT Trustee for another 5 years. Pam is responsible for market activities, minibus operations as well as clerking for NATT. Pam joined the Trust in April 2008 shortly after the death of her husband, Brian, who had not been well for a number of years. By devoting her spare time to the Trust gave her a positive way of dealing with her new circumstances.
3
The setting has also been extremely fortunate to have been given permission to use a piece of land nearby to transform into a community garden, for which the children will be responsible. This exciting project is perfect for learning about flowering plants, growing vegetables, insects they might encounter and how to work as a team. 345 have also enrolled in the Royal Horticultural Society ‘Campaign for School Gardening’ to use as an educational tool. They are also the very proud recipients of a bespoke sensory board, made by the recently formed Alresford Men’s Shed. The children love it and the men loved making it! A special thank you to Brian Durham for making this project happen. It will be a valuable sensory resource. To find out more about the exciting times ahead at 345-preschool, to arrange a visit, or to offer any support to our projects, please contact the Team Leader, Taryn Stroud on 07826 948826 or at info@345preschool.org. Our prospectus can be found on our website at www.345preschool.org. 46
Pigs Mobility Leads Sun Hill Procession Sun Hill Infants school celebrated its 50th birthday on April 21st and to kick off their fun day a 'Wonderful Wheels' procession set off from Stratton Bates to the school. With many wonderful contraptions on show it looked a little like the Wacky Races and your Pigs were leading the way with a specially adorned Mobility Scooter. A temporary trailer contained a willing Piglet who was Willy Wonka for the journey, distributing sweets to children lining the route. The Alresford Pigs Association is a small charity comprised of people who either live or work in Alresford and come together to raise money to given financial help to those in need in Alresford and the surrounding villages.

She was initially confronted with the need to purchase a new Minibus, whi9ch was completed in October 2008. This Minibus is still on the road having done some 104,000 miles. She was also responsible for the evaluation of a new automatic Mercedes Minibus, and its purchase in May 2017, thus doubling the Minibus fleet. She has coped admirably with the additional clerical work. The market stalls have increased since 2008 and there are currently 12-16 stalls during the Summer months. The Trust with Pam’s help has re-introduced a successful French Market, which will continue to be held on Easter Saturday. Since August 2010 Pam has also been the Clerk to NATT responsible for banking, secretarial and administration. All in all Pam has committed herself for the last 10 years benefitting NATT, and in fact becoming Mrs NATT. In 2010-2011 she was awarded the Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community. In 2012 she was awarded the Silver Salver on behalf of the Minibus drivers by Alresford Society, and in 2017 she was awarded a Certificate of Merit by Alresford Society for her cont9inued work for the local Community. She was also Guest of Honour at the Royal Naval Association 25th Anniversary Dinner on 14th April held at the Swan Hotel representing Alresford and the Town Trust. Robin Atkins (Chair NATT) believes Pam has played a vital role in the expansion and success of NATT over the last 10 years. Robin Atkins (Chair)

Animals HEAT STROKE AND OUR PETS
I
t is well publicised about the risks of heat stroke to dogs when walking them in hot weather or leaving them in an enclosed area such as a car or a conservatory without shade/ventilation on a sunny day (it does not even need to be a hot day), but many people are not aware of the dangers of heat stroke in other pets such as cats, rabbits and other hutched or caged pets. Most of the animals we keep as pets are mammals like us but due to their fur they cannot sweat through their skin but can only lose heat usually through their feet or ears. It is known that dogs lose heat through panting but this is not a normal mode of temperature control for animals such as cats, rabbits, or rodents such as degus and chinchillas. Animals particularly susceptible to heat stroke would be the very young, very old, or pregnant or those with a medical condition. Also, pets kept outside in hutches in temperate weather such as rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, and in particular chinchillas due to their dense fur coat. Hutches placed outside should never be situated in full sun and must always have a shaded area for the pet to retreat to. If providing an outdoor run, a shaded part should always be provided to protect
from the sun and heat whilst still allowing adequate ventilation. For pets kept indoors such as house cats it is always best remembered to ensure your pet has access to cooler, better ventilated parts of the house by way of keeping internal doors open. For those kept in cages and hutches indoors it may be necessary to block out the sun with curtains or blinds in rooms with a sunny aspect, or better still move their accommodation to a north or east facing room. Always allow access to drinking water at all times and increase the number of water bowls available for any pet during the warmer weather. When an animal is suffering from heat stroke they may appear lethargic, be collapsed or convulsing, gasping or panting rapidly and salivating excessively. If you suspect your pet has heat stroke take them to a cooler area straight away. It may help to wrap the pet in a cool, damp towel to initiate cooling down and offer a very small amount of water to drink but do not place them in ice-cold water as this may induce shock. Seek veterinary attention immediately. Your vet can administer intravenous fluids or place them in a tepid water bath whilst monitoring their core body temperature thereby reducing their temperature in a controlled manner. Heat stroke in any animal can be a serious, life-threatening condition and it is suffice to say that prevention is always better than cure.

Alresford Town Council Reports The full text of these reports and questions raised by residents may be found on the Town Council Website
J
une is the first full month of the new municipal year and sees the start of the 2018/2019 programme of committee meetings. For this year we have a new chairman, Cllr Steve Deeming who was unanimously selected by the Council body. Cllr Deeming, who is well regarded for his work chairing the Recreation & Environment Committee, will bring a balanced and pragmatic approach to this important role. The dates of this year’s meetings and the membership of each of the committees, is available on the NATC web site. On the 8th May the Annual Town Meeting was held at Arlebury Park. For the interest of those residents who were unable to attend, the following bullet points were the main areas of discussion. The full report is available on the NATC web site; New Alresford town Assembly Report 2018 Extract In January 2017 the budget set for 2017/2018 included sums to fix and redecorate buildings, it was agreed that a five-year plan would be published.
52
During 2017 five councillors left the council, which impacted on the council’s corporate memory of short and long term projects. Five new Councillors were coopted in June 2017, who quite rightly wished to make their own contributions to these projects and the fiveyear plan. We had also lost a Town Clerk who had been with us for many years and Karen Ross had joined us as a Locum Clerk. Karen has now moved on and our new Locum Clerk is Sue Hobbs. Sue is very experienced and well qualified and will bring us into perfect condition for a new permanent Clerk to take control. This upheaval has been very hard on staff and in order to relieve the workload, we agreed that only essential work should go forward. This is reflected in the underspend in the budget of about £74,000. This sum remains in reserves. Councillors give a great deal of time, effort and expertise to this voluntary role, it has been estimated as six hours per week, but sometimes it seems far more. Thank you, Councillors, for volunteering!’ There followed brief Reports from New Alresford Town Council’s Committee Chairs.
Winchester Road/The Avenue 30mph NATC supports Perins' request for a Pelican Crossing on The Avenue. However, we believe that the greatest danger along The Avenue and Winchester Road is speed. Of every 10 pedestrians hit by a vehicle, 8 are killed at 40mph. This falls dramatically to 2 out of 10 deaths if speed is reduced by just 10mph to 30mph. In 2007, two people were tragically killed along Winchester Road in separate incidents. HCC's report concluded that the 40mph speed limit on the road was safe. There have been several accidents involving injury both before and since. Residents have consistently asked HCC to reduce the speed limit, but these have all been rejected. Last year Winchester Road residents unanimously signed a petition that: • noted their long-held concerns about safety • requested a 30mph speed limit • requested greater - or at least some - enforcement of the speed limit • drew attention to the poor condition of the road surface. Since the fatal accident report, several factors have made the road more dangerous:
• increase in HGV movements • increase in traffic due to the rising number of homes in the town • the popularity of cycling increasing the number of vulnerable road users • change in the population along Winchester Road. In the first 175m, there are now 11 people of retirement age and 21 children age 10 or younger The petition was presented to NATC and we agreed to support the residents' requests. However, HCC again ruled out any changes. So we have written to HCC to ask that it: • • •
bring the road up to the minimum safe standard to be included in the National Cycle Network. Our section of Route 23 avoids the natural entrance to town, as the road is not safe enough to be part of the Network provide a crossing point between the homes on Winchester Road reduce the speed limit along the road from 40mph to 30mph
Finance will play a role in HCC's decision, so we have offered a contribution towards the cost. We hope that by asking at the beginning of the carriageway resurfacing programme, the cost can be kept down. We await a response from HCC. If you wish to send your own comment on this issue, you can contact Cllr Roy Perry, leader of HCC, at roy.perry@ hants.gov.uk

HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE - PETER AMEY
P
eter Amey has been very busy since his graduation from Bath Spa University last year. Having read Creative Writing he has returned to his first love, that of art.
Peter works in the medium of both photography and IT. As a contemporary artist Peter uses technology to produce work of not only linear precision and clarity but also highly stylized and individual. The images he produces have a Pop Art feel about them with a palette at times reminiscent of David Hockney. ‘I’m very comfortable with digital art it has become a very important and exciting area to work in”. Peter, who can often be seen, walking around Alresford equipped with his camera looking for inspirational imagery; is now intent on showing his work and that of his contemporises to a wider audience.
Our exhibition is curated in a slightly different way too. I like to create room sets for my work to inhabit; I like people to engage with my work, to actually feel a part of it, so I like to set it ‘familiar’ installations”.
“I have curated an exhibition of my work and that of five friends. The exhibition will be held in Winchester (check website for dates and times). Other artists exhibiting are Jessica Parsons, Gerallt Tawy, Cais Beardow, James Polley and Matthew Patrick. These artists are all friends of mine working in a diverse range of medium including watercolour and photography.
To experience the work and support Peter Amey and his fellow artists visit the ‘Abode’ exhibition in Winchester this June 2018. For more information on exhibition date and time visit: www.peterameyphotographyandart.com
COLOURFUL LANDSCAPES AT WINCHESTER GALLERY
Painting in pastels, Sue uses pure natural colours with subtle tones, light and shade. She is primarily a colourist, inspired by the Fauvist movement as well as Matisse and Van Gogh. Her compositions are steeped in nostalgia, especially her scenes of English fields in the winter. Evocative pine trees are a recurring theme. She remains entranced by their majesty and frequently returns to them as subjects when visiting the Mediterranean coast of France and Spain.
Sandra Pagan
Sue Campion is a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and was featured earlier this year in an RBA exhibition at The Minster Gallery. Sue was born in London in 1944. She studied Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and her work is part of many private and corporate collections. She now lives in the Shropshire countryside that features in many of her paintings.

WINCHESTER CITIZENS ADVICE
Lesley Rose, Advice
FROM CATERPILLARS TO KINGS AT PETER GREEN
Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District explains how to check you’re receiving the pay you’re entitled to.
Q A
I am over 25 and entitled to the National Living Wage, but I suspect I am being underpaid. How can I find out if I’m being paid the right amount, and claim what I am owed from my employer?
The National Living Wage is an obligatory minimum wage payable to workers in the United Kingdom aged over 25 and is currently set at £7.83 per hour, before tax.
If you think you’ve been underpaid, you should act quickly, as it’s harder to get your money back three months after the problem arose. First of all check your payslip. You will be able to see the number of hours you’ve worked, the rate you’ve been paid at and if there have been any deductions. Ask your employer to explain anything you don’t understand on your payslip, and tell them why you think you have been underpaid. If there was a genuine mistake, ask your employer to pay you straight away. You shouldn’t have to wait until the next payday. If your employer refuses to pay back your wages you can formally raise a grievance, either by writing a letter to your employer or following your company’s grievance procedure. Explain that you haven’t been paid enough and you want them to pay the difference. If this still doesn’t work, you can take your employer to a tribunal. Contact the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), who will see if your employer will agree to a conciliation process, rather than go to court. Otherwise you can take your employer to a tribunal. Think carefully before starting a tribunal claim as it can be expensive and stressful. If you need any advice or guidance through this process, contact your nearest Citizens Advice by going to www.citizensadvice. org.uk then entering your postcode in the search field.

Winchester City Councillor Monthly Report Sun Lane Outline Planning Application Once again the outline application has been deferred – current date is Thursday 21st June. At this stage, it is an OUTLINE application and a further fully detailed plan will need to be submitted for permission to proceed with the development later in the year. For it to pass, the application needs to comply with the Planning Policy, Local Plan Part 2, National Planning Policy Framework and Highways England requirements. Winchester Sport & Leisure Park The Design Framework for the Parkland at Bar End has been published. Viewable here : http:// winchester.gov.uk/projects/consultation. Following approval of the Design Framework and Playing Pitch Strategy, the planning application will be submitted in June. The next step is for WCC to procure an operator, and this should be agreed later in 2018. The Movement Strategy, under HCC responsibility, takes into account this development and the need to improve road, cycle, pedestrian and public transport links. The next Cabinet (Sport and Leisure) Committee meeting on Thursday 7th June at 4.30pm in the Walton Suite, Guildhall. Winchester Criterium and Cyclefest 2018 Reminder : Winchester Criterium and CycleFest is back on Sunday 10th June. CycleFest will offer brand new activities and stalls on The Broadway and Abbey Gardens - from Hargroves Cycles Roller Racing and arts & crafts to face painting – something for everyone! See: www.winchestercriterium.org Avoid Winchester or join in the fun! Life-changing adaptations for homes WCC have recently accommodated a Stanmore couple into a new Council home with special adaptations to improve their quality of life, and this is the basis of our refreshed Housing Strategy. There is a grant programme for disabled residents and WCC has agreed to double its spending on adapting residents’ homes as part of its bid to improve the level of choice available to local people. As well as helping Council tenants by installing disabled adaptations they are investing more than £1m through the Disabled Facilities Grant each year to support residents to live in the community. This can involve extending properties to help disabled and vulnerable residents to be able to continue to live independently and avoid the disruption, distress and expense of being placed in care homes or needing hospital stays. Grants are also available for private home owners. Residents can apply to the Council for Disabled Facilities Grant assistance by emailing _PrivateSectorHousing@winchester.gov.uk and calling 01962 848 455.

Winchester (and Alresford) - the gin capital Always drink responsibly, but this is a real celebration of local businesses to Alresford! Britain’s appreciation for gin is on the rise – and locally this has been evidenced as 250 tickets to the Mid-Hants Railway Watercress Line’s ‘Gin Train’ event sold out in just two minutes. Passengers enjoyed cocktails created by official partner, Winchester Distillery using local Twisted Nose Gin, whilst travelling in style on the steam train through the rolling countryside of the South Downs National Park. Food offering was by Pulpo Negro. And of course, passengers could use the improved bus service to get to and from the event. We have our own distillery in Old Alresford. And of course, The Naked Grape stocks local gins, as well as numerous other local brews. As I say though, drink responsibly but enjoy your local produce and celebrate what our Ward has to offer. Council asks public to be ‘dragons’! A new business innovation fund is being launched by WCC, giving members of the public the opportunity to vote on which innovative business ideas the council should fund. The fund is aimed at small businesses located within the Winchester District. It will focus on innovation and the creation of new business ideas, services and projects – and the awards will be in the region of £1,500 per business. Businesses have until 30 June 2018 to apply by completing an online application form and providing their business plan and cash flow forecasts. They will then produce a three minute online pitch to market their innovative idea to the public. Winchester City Council residents and businesses will vote over the summer for the ideas they would like to fund, with the final decisions being made in early autumn. For further information on the business innovation fund, online application form and full eligibility criteria visit: www.winchester. gov.uk/business-innovation-fund or email businessgrants@ winchester.gov.uk If you have any comments or questions on the content of this report, please do not hesitate to get in touch. And of course, on any matter relating to WCC responsibilities where I may be able to help.
