Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen Oneil - From the moment we met Ben until Martin had completed the work the service we received was first class. Ben's eye for design helped us to improve on our ideas. Martin and James were professional in every way. Nothing was too much trouble. If difficulties arose they were quickly dealt with. The final result has been admired by all our family and friends.
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

RED HOT CAR BOOT Over sixty car booters laid out their wares at Brockwood Park in Bramdean on August Bank Holiday Monday, many arriving an hour before the gates were due to open, so keen were they to get the best pitch. On the hottest August Bank Holiday Monday on record, eager buyers visited the booters, meeting many old friends and local residents who come every year, some visitors travelling from as far afield as Fawley near Southampton.
On the Open Day on 25th August 153 visitors came to the Eel House bringing the overall total to 9101 since it first opened to the public ten years ago, following its restoration in 2009. At around midday the 9,000th visitor arrived – Edward Howe, who lives not far away, and (very appropriately) is studying Biological Sciences at Reading University – and was presented with a “9000th Visitor Certificate” and a copy of the fascinating “Book of Eels” by Tom Fort. Robin Atkins, Chair of the New Alresford Town Trust, thanked all the volunteers and donors who have made the project such a success and boost to local tourism and hoped that next year would see the 10,000th total reached.
Firstly Treloar’s School & College Alton, who visited The Thatched Cottage, Upper Farringdon. The students had a great day. This was an educational visit to study pollination. At Treloar’s they concentrate on the students ability - not their disability ! Secondly Parkinson's UK Winchester, who visited The Down House, Itchen Abbas. They all appear to be enjoying the tea and cake. These are just two the many gardens throughout the NGS who open their gardens free, for our beneficiaries.
The annual event, now in its 33rd year, was hosted by local resident and fundraiser Caroline Stanley and volunteers were on hand from family support charity Home-Start Winchester who received the proceeds of £1155. Among the booters was Caroline Galpin from Cheriton with her sons Oscar and Adam, who in the past has been a Home-Start mum supported by the local charity, helping her to cope with two autistic sons. “We are so grateful to Caroline Stanley for her continued support of Home-Start,” said Liz Cooper, Home-Start Winchester Chairman.” To find out more about Home-Start visit www.home-startwinchester.org.uk.

AUTUMN IS THE IDEAL TIME TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT CAN BE DONE;
A
s days become shorter, the sunlight less intense and rainfall increases moss begins to flourish and your grass is more susceptible to weakening. Let’s take a look at what can be done to improve things. Like all living things, those that are unhealthy, stressed or run-down are more susceptible to pests and diseases. Whilst moss is neither a disease nor an insect pest, it can certainly be a pest in lawns. Lawns that are in poor condition are far more likely to suffer moss problems or disease attack. Moss in lawns Mosses are flowerless plants that reproduce through the production of spores or from small pieces of existing moss that break away and settle on a suitable growing medium. It’s easy to spread existing moss when mowing. Cool, damp and shaded areas provide the perfect environment for mosses to thrive. Moss can smother out your grass plants, before you know it your lawn is more moss than grass. When things turn dry, moss quickly loses its colour and before long your lawn appears brown and dead. Chafer grubs love to live in mossy lawns. Birds love to eat chafer grubs. Ignore lawn moss at your peril! Completely lifting and replacing a lawn affected by this kind of damage can be costly. If you have concerns about moss in your lawn it’s best to speak to a lawn care professional who can carry out suitable soil sampling and advise on the correct regime to get the problem under control. Practices and factors Mowing too short, too infrequently or not following the correct mowing height for the time of year can be a big contributor to moss growth. As can incorrect nutrition, not dealing with thatch or compaction and not removing leaves from the lawn regularly. Bare areas should also be dealt with promptly so as not to leave space for moss spores to germinate. A healthy dense grass sward leaves little room for moss or weeds to take up residence. Environmental factors play a big part too. Poor drainage or heavy shade means the soil surface and grass remains wet for long periods creating ideal moss growing conditions. Dealing with moss So now you know what moss is and what causes it to take up home in your lawn, you can probably begin to work out how to deal with it or how to prevent it in the future. Deal with any shade issues. If there are overhanging branches that can be removed to help with light and airflow consider doing this when these plants are dormant over winter.
Next you need to consider drainage issues and compaction. Many lawns benefit greatly from aeration to remove plugs of soil from the lawn and improve drainage, air circulation and penetration of water and nutrients to the plant roots. Topdressing following aeration is particularly good practice and massively beneficial. If you already have moss in your lawn this can be treated. Some people try this themselves using lawn-sand, but the results can be hit and miss, with the grass often being killed at the same time. Our approach is a liquid treatment combined with a wetting agent that helps penetrate deep into the thick matting of moss. Ensure the lawn has the correct nutritional plan in place, so it’s receiving the right nutrients at the right time of year. Healthy grass, like healthy people, is in a better position to fight off invaders. Once the moss has been killed it’s time to remove it. This can be hard work over a large area where a petrol-driven scarifier is essential equipment for the job. It’s time consuming and pretty hard work but it’s important to get the dead moss out and will reduce thatch at the same time. The final process is over-seeding. Introducing new, healthy grass plants to in-fill the gaps left by the moss that’s been removed. Creating a stronger, healthier lawn that’s more capable of dealing with the challenges nature throws at it. Winter lawn conditioner Most people don’t consider feeding their lawns in the winter. Our treatment plans always include a winter moss treatment and lawn tonic. Seaweed based lawn tonics contain major and minor plant nutrients, trace elements, vitamins and other complex compounds. By applying a seaweed extract, nutrient availability within the soil is increased. One of the main benefits of applying seaweed extracts is in increasing lawn grass stress tolerance levels which is important for lawns dealing with lots of foot traffic or dry periods. However it is believed that seaweed extracts also improve the water-holding characteristics of soils, reducing the need to water during the summer months. It has also been found that seaweed extracts may be useful in increasing existing soil microbial activity which can be beneficial to grass colour, health and root mass. Plants treated with seaweed products develop a resistance to pests and diseases reducing the need for excessive use of pesticides and generally promoting the health of your lawn. As the gardening year comes to a close don’t forget that there is plenty we can still do to help get your lawn through the winter and encourage it to look great next year. COMMUNITY
ALRESFORD TOWN COUNCIL REPORTS Councillor vacancy After a brief summer recess, New Alresford Town Council meetings have resumed. The Town Council has another casual vacancy for a councillor due to a resignation. If you are interested in becoming a councillor, then please contact the Town Clerk.
Skatepark revamp Skateboarding is a global phenomenon with 50 million riders and thousands of skateboard parks worldwide. It will feature as a sport for the first time in the 2020 Olympics. The skatepark, located in a corner of Arlebury Park, is popular with skateboarders, scooters and BMXers. The Council were approached by skateboard users about improving the facility. Following consultation with the skatepark facebook group, it was agreed that the priority was to extend the run-off area, and the Council are delighted to have agreed that the skatepark will see a significant extension of 5 metres in width. This will enable users to do trick manoeuvres more safely. The work is being undertaken by local company Complete Garden Construction and is
due to start on 7th October 2019. The skatepark will be closed for approximately three weeks whilst work is undertaken.
Playgrounds The Council maintains the playgrounds within the three parks: Arlebury Park, Stratton Bates and Sun Hill. The playgrounds undergo a statutory annual inspection. Recently, a damaged baby swing has been replaced and the ride on horse has been repaired at Sun Hill Recreation Ground. The zipwire at Arlebury Park has been greased to give a smoother ride. Seemingly minor works but continual maintenance keeps aging play equipment useable until the more major updating of the play areas.
Bonfire night Alresford Rotary’s annual Bonfire Night fireworks event will take place this year on Friday 1st November 2019 at Arlebury Park. The evening will start at 7pm with a torchlight procession (glow sticks for children!) from the top of town, followed by the bonfire and then the firework display at (approximately) 8pm. Tickets can be bought in advance from Six West Newsagents, West Street:
Adults £6.00 Children (5-16) £3.00 and on the day: Adults £8.00 Children £5.00.
Watercress Way Walks There is a collection of walks promoted by the Watercress Way working to provide safe routes for walkers, cyclists and horse riders using the disused Watercress Line. Railway route 3 is 9 ½ miles long, starting in Itchen Abbas proceeding along the railway, Wayfarer’s Walk, and watercress beds to Alresford. Visit www.watercressway.org. uk for comprehensive guides on local walks.
Alresford Senior Lunch Club Alresford Senior Lunch Club provides a two-course lunch and coffee or tea for £5.50 at Alresford Methodist Hall every Thursday at 12pm. The lunch club provides an opportunity to meet and enjoy good company with a delicious lunch. They can also provide transport if required. This year New Alresford Town Council provided a grant to help towards the Lunch Club’s hall hire costs. Please phone Janet Pooley on 732779 or Chris Hulford 736810 for more details.
Recycling matters Winchester City Council will be offering a kerbside glass collection from the
beginning of October on a monthly basis. By now each household should have a black box for jars and bottles; those in multiple occupancy homes will have been provided with a communal bin. Some collection times may be changing - a guide to waste collection can be found on Winchester City Council’s website www.winchester. gov.uk. If you require help with waste collection, please contact Winchester City Council who will arrange for extra assistance, call WCC on 0300 300 0013 or email: customerservice@winchster. gov.uk.

NEW ‘FOREVER FUND’ IS LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY PROJECTS IN SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK More good causes and community projects will be helped in the future as a new ‘forever fund’ has been created for the South Downs National Park. The new dedicated community fund will build up over time and is being launched by the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity of the National Park, in partnership with the South Downs National Park Authority. To kickstart the endowment, Southern Co-op has donated £10,000, together with £100,000 from the Trust and £100,000 of matchfunding from the South Downs National Park Authority. With a clutch of other donors, the community fund is starting out at £290,000 and is expected to grow into the millions over the next decade, allowing more projects to benefit from grant funding. Endowments are a simple but effective way for charities and not-forprofit organisations to ensure steady, long-term funding. They are a charitable investment account in which the contributions are invested to generate interest income, and only the interest income is spent. The Trust’s endowment will provide a permanent funding stream for the National Park’s Sustainable Communities Fund (SCF). The initiative has been running for several years and helped a range of projects, including Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, Petworth Community Garden in West Sussex and arts charity Patina Lewes in East Sussex. Funding from the SCF helped to replace an unsafe bridge at Botany Bay, a chalk valley near Duncton, West Sussex, and build a new outdoor learning shelter to help open the site up to local primary schools. Doug Jones, Chair of the SCF Grant Panel, explained: “This special landscape is dependent on volunteers who give their time and support but often lack funds. “So we’re excited to be launching this unique fund which will give grants to enable their support to go further. “Until now the Sustainable Communities Fund has relied on piecemeal donations. In a climate where charity funding is never guaranteed, this initiative provides a dedicated and dependable income stream to support community projects in the National Park. In short, it gives SCF a sustainable future.”
And Doug added: “We plan to build the endowment over time and support more projects that help the environment. “This is an exciting time for the Trust as we approach the 10th anniversary of the National Park and we’re looking forward to the positive long-term impact this new community fund will have.” Gemma Lacey, Director of Sustainability and Communications at Southern Co-op, said: “Our co-operative was formed just a few miles outside of the South Downs National Park almost 150 years ago for the benefit of the local community. As England’s newest national park, we are privileged to be part of its preservation. We hope this donation to the community fund will enable it to continue to thrive for years to come and for many generations to enjoy.” Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire received SCF grant funding to help transform its Roman Villa, which is based on archaeological excavations of a 4th century Roman home at Sparsholt, near Winchester.Volunteers spent more than 1,000 hours painstakingly recreating a mosaic from Sparsholt using more than 120,000 multicoloured tiles. Maureen Page, Director at Butser Ancient Farm, said: “This funding has made a huge difference to the Roman Villa and it now feels like visitors are stepping back in time to see first-hand how the Romans would have lived in Britain. We have more than 35,000 schoolchildren visiting every year and this authentic Villa is helping them to learn more because it brings archaeology to life.” Grants awarded by the SCF are considered by the SCF Grant panel, which meets two times a year. The next meeting is on September 24 and there is a grant application deadline of August 26. Grants are available for up to 50 per cent of the project cost from £250 to a maximum of £10,000. Any organisation interested should email mark.rose@ southdownstrust.org.uk or call 01730 819219 for an initial conversation about the project. The South Downs National Park Trust is the official charity of the South Downs National Park. literacy, building cultural capital, careers awareness, study and library skills and critical thinking. Much like the Elizabeth Godolphin Award in the Sixth Form, the GLP is unique to Godolphin and prepares the girls to best make their mark on the world. Dr Claire Parker, Mindfulness Teacher at Godolphin School says “We have received a tremendous response from girls to our Mindfulness sessions, which is great. The lessons are popular with our First to Third Year girls and I’m thrilled to be offering Mindfulness as an extra session for all other age groups too.
In an effort to teach pupils about the importance of looking after their mental health, Godolphin recognises the many benefits of Mindfulness and is delighted to be introducing it as part of the school curriculum this year. Mindfulness forms part of the Godolphin Learning Programme (GLP). Launched in 2018, this school initiative covers the allimportant soft skills that students need for success in their future lives. In addition to Mindfulness, the programme includes PSHCEE, digital
INTRODUCING JOSS KING, LEAD PRACTITIONER OF THE NURSERY AT ST SWITHUN’S PREP SCHOOL My name is Joss King and I am very privileged to be the new Lead Practitioner in the nursery at St Swithun’s. I have worked with young children throughout my adult life, first as a nanny, then in nurseries and preschools. After completing a foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies I was appointed as co-coordinator at Sparklers Children’s Centre. I later joined Lanterns Children’s Centre where I remained for ten years, wearing several hats, before taking up my new role at St Swithun’s. I love the outdoors, growing vegetables, arts and crafts and singing (even though I am no expert at the latter two!), and I hope to be able to share these passions with the children in the beautiful setting and facilities of St Swithun’s. At St Swithun’s we balance traditional values of respect, manners and caring for others, while encouraging children to question, to think outside the box and develop a real enthusiasm for learning. Our work includes some topical themes and focal starting points but then is very much led by the interests of the children themselves, and having fun is essential! We also maintain an open and trusting relationship in which parents and carers feel part of our school community and can form an easy partnership with us in promoting learning and well-being. Ultimately our aim is to give all of the children in our care the confidence to achieve their potential and to begin their journey towards becoming fearless, confident and articulate individuals who can form happy relationships and make a positive contribution to the world.
There is a growing body of increasingly robust evidence based research which points towards tangible benefits of Mindfulness for young people. This research includes wellbeing and mental health, helping young people to recognise worry and manage difficulties; concentration and cognition; social and emotional learning to develop a greater awareness of relationships and how to manage them; and behaviour, helping young people to self-regulate effectively, manage impulsivity and reduce conflict.” To find out more about Godolphin or to book a visit please go to www.godolphin.org
THE QWERTY KIDS STORY In this day and age, Touch Typing has become an essential skill for life. Without doubt this is a particularly useful skill for all children and especially those with learning differences such as dyslexia and dyspraxia. We have been teaching for over 20 years now and as parents of children who have dyspraxia, dysgraphia and processing issues, we have experienced first-hand the freedom touch typing can give a child. As mothers both of us struggled to find local Touch Typing courses for our children without having to travel great distances. Philippa’s son was 10 when an Educational Psychologist suggested he should learn to touch type as no one (not even him!) could read his handwriting. He was the first child at his school to learn, which meant new protocols had to be put in place. i.e. where was he going to charge his laptop, could he take his laptop home, could we buy him a laptop or did it need to be one of the schools? Once these issues were overcome, he was able to use his chrome book for every lesson that involved extended pieces of writing. This was a not only a great relief to him but also to his teachers! He had been incredibly frustrated and demotivated when he couldn’t express himself on paper, and now he types at a good 55 – 60 words per minute! Previously he had to concentrate on his letter formation which made his work painfully slow and meant that he wrote the absolute minimal amount required. He now has the ability to type faster than it is possible to write! Clare has a 10 year old son who has visual processing difficulties and it was recommended that he learnt to use a laptop and Touch Type in lessons and for future exams. She knew she could buy some software and do it with him at home, however she also knew he wouldn’t be very keen or willing to sit with her for 3 hours a day for 3 days and learn. Having gone through this process, as mothers and teachers we passionately believe in the power of Touch Typing to release a child from the prison of not being able to express themselves.
I am very lucky in that I love what I do. Watching children grow, learn and discover is hugely rewarding. I look forward to continuing to be surprised and awed by the children’s capacity to embrace life and to continuing the successful work of the nursery at St Swithun’s Prep School.
Our other children have also learnt to touch type as we have experienced first-hand that not only is Touch Typing essential for children with learning difficulties, but it is a life skill for all children in our ever increasingly technological world.

PREPARATION
COOK TIME: 35 MINUTES
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
TOTAL TIME: 45 MINUTES • • • • • •
1 tbsp olive oil 2 medium leeks, trimmed and sliced into discs 3 cloves garlic, minced 500 g button mushrooms 1 tsp dried mixed herbs A pinch of salt and pepper
For the sauce: • 1 tbsp butter (dairy-free if vegan) • Salt and pepper to taste • Cream or soy yoghurt, to serve (dairy-free if vegan) • 2 tbsp plain flour • 350 ml milk (dairy-free if vegan) • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg • A pinch of salt and pepper • 1 roll vegan puff pastry (or gluten-free, if needed) • 4 tbsp milk, for glazing (dairy-free if vegan)
Add the olive oil to a large saucepan on a medium heat. Fry the leeks and garlic for 2 minutes, to soften. Add the mushrooms, herbs, salt and pepper and stir for a minute. Place the lid on top and cook for 8 minutes. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt the dairy-free butter on medium heat. Add the flour and stir until combined. Slowly add in the milk, a tablespoon at a time and whisk, until you have a smooth thick mixture. Stir in the nutmeg and season with salt and pepper. Combine the cooked leeks and mushrooms with the sauce and leave to cool completely. Make sure your puff pastry is at room temperature (if using frozen, leave at room temperature overnight) and preheat the oven to 200C. Add the leek and mushroom mixture to a pie dish and top with the puff pastry, cutting off any excess pastry around the edges. Crimp the edges using a fork and score a criss-cross pattern on the top with a sharp knife. Finally, dip a pastry brush in a little dairy-free milk and brush the top of the pie, to help it brown. Cook for 25 minutes until golden brown. Serve straight away.

Through much creative and experimental exploration he has continued his foraging practice, not only as a means to understand and to discover the practical relevance that foraging has in the modern developed world, but also in terms of what it means to be an environmentally conscious human in relation to the natural world. Spend a few wonderful hours exploring the beautiful Heckfield Estate for the season's pick of wild autumn foods under the expert guidance of professional forager Fergus Drennan. You will discover how to safely identify and gather fungi, as well as hedgerow leaves, fruits, nuts and roots. During the walk, Fergus will share with you and explain how to create various delicious items crafted from wild produce. This could be birch molasses, pine pollen 'marzipan', lacto-fermented leaves, or other items from his treasure trove of wild tasters.
Fergus has a huge amount of wild food knowledge to share, and an array of imaginative ways of doing so. After even only an afternoon with him, the natural world around you will never look the same again. Please note: Due to high demand for Heckfield's restaurants, lunch after the event usually needs to be reserved in advance. If you would like to book a table, please email restaurants.reservations@ heckfieldplace.com.

CULTURE & E NTERTAINMENT
REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIRST OF NOVEMBER For many years Alresford Rotary has organised the town’s annual bonfire and firework extravaganza taking place on November 5th (unless the 5th was a Sunday). Whilst for the purist it was felt proper to commemorate the exploits of Robert Catesby (a forebear of Alresford Rotarian Tony Catesby) and his sidekick Guy Fawkes on the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, logistics including other demands on Arlebury Park led to a decision being made last year that “in the future” Alresford Bonfire night would be on the first Friday of the month. Beware that some of the town’s publicity produced earlier this year misstates the date. What does “in the future” mean? Putting on what is generally considered to be an event without compare locally does require considerable organisation and manpower (and woman power). Alresford Rotary has about half the membership it had ten years ago and it would not be able to maintain the quality of the event and meet understandably ever more stringent Health and Safety requirements without assistance from outside its membership. Similarly Alresford Rotary has to look increasingly for assistance in putting on its other major annual event, the 10K run in June. If you are interested in becoming a member of Alresford Rotary don’t wait to be invited – that was historically how new members were acquired – please let us know of your interest. If you are not interested in the possibility of committing yourself to membership we would still be delighted if, without any formality or commitment, Rotary can consider you to be a “Friend” i.e. someone who shares Rotary’s ideal of service to the community and who can be contacted to help on such occasions as Bonfire night. President Stephen Pinch looks forward to hearing from you (stephen.pinch@gmail.com 732064). Rotary is no longer “an old man’s dining club”. In a membership of about 15 we now have two female members, one of whom is in her ‘40s. and our aim is to reduce our average age and close the gender disparity. Thirty three years on from coming into existence the last remaining founder member Richard Hawkins recently left Alresford Rotary. We thank Richard for all he has done for the local community over the years and are delighted that he will still be actively in our major events as a Friend of Rotary. James Pinniger

NADIA WATERFIELD FINE ART
A
fter two years painstakingly restoring this beautiful old grain store located outside Stockbridge, Nadia Waterfield Fine Art is now proud to call this wonderful, light-filled and creative space, home. Now, as one of the largest galleries in Hampshire, the new space not only allows Nadia to realise her ambition of bringing together as much talent as possible under one roof with artwork from over 60 artists but also the freedom to exhibit larger and more diverse paintings and sculptures. The Nadia Waterfield Fine Art Autumn Exhibition, which opens on October 10th and runs until the end of October, is, as ever, a rich and stimulating selection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics, carefully curated from artists across the country. However Nadia is particularly excited this year to introduce new work from further afield, featuring artists from Perth, Australia, Andalusia and North Carolina.
and Saturday and by appointment.Visitors can expect an ever-changing portfolio of art work which is constantly updated so there’s always something to intrigue. Nadia’s long-term vision for the gallery is for it to be an artistic hub where lovers of all things art related can congregate and share ideas and expertise. With a series of select and mixed shows during the year, the gallery is not only a shop window for artists both established and new, but also it runs an extensive programme of inspiring lectures and workshops. Top art tutors take workshops for adults teaching a variety of skills, mediums and subjects from expressive drawing to painting in oils. Similarly workshops for children and art scholars are equally diverse ranging from making Easter bonnets to getting an A level portfolio up to scratch. The art lecture schedule runs in conjunction with major art exhibitions taking place in London and leading art lecturers and curators come to talk. Check out The Pre -Raphaelites, Sex and Revolution in Victorian England on October 31st which is guaranteed to keep everyone on the edge of their seats!
The Autumn Exhibition represents work from both well established artists, along with rarer finds from lesser known painters and emerging talent, and boasts an intriguing cross-section of subjects, media and genres, handpicked to appeal to all tastes and budgets. Nadia, an artist herself, is fastidious about keeping her exhibitions, fresh, relevant and exciting and travels the country visiting artists’ studios and building relationships with her artists to ensure a greater understanding of their subject matter and what inspires them. During the show Nadia will be on hand to share her expertise and help clients choose exactly what it is they want – finding that ‘just right’ piece for someone to cherish is a passion of Nadia’s. The ethos behind the Nadia Waterfield Fine Art Gallery is to provide a space which allows paintings and sculptures to be enjoyed in a relaxed yet professional environment. The gallery is beautifully appointed with stylish rugs, lamps, tables, chairs – also for sale - which provide a warm, intimate backdrop to the paintings, sculptures and ceramics. There’s a coffee area to relax in, plenty of parking and lovely dog walks in the stunning environs. The gallery is open throughout the year every Thursday, Friday
The new Nadia Waterfield Fine Art gallery signifies the beginning of an exciting era for this cutting-edge contemporary art gallery and as a result of its success, Nadia is excited to open a sister gallery in Bruton, Dorset. ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS Flu Clinics Please note the correction below, from the previous edition; For truly housebound patients who are unable to get to the surgery, the Practice Nurse can visit you at home. In order to streamline her visits we are again splitting her home visits into two sessions. Alresford/Cheriton/Beauworth/Bramdean: The morning of Monday 4th November. Candover Valley/Itchen Valley/Medstead/ Bighton/Ropley: The morning of Tuesday 19th November. If you are already being seen by the District Nurse or the Proactive Care Nurse (Zoe Denyer) he/she will be able to give you your flu jab. Please phone the surgery as soon as possible to let us know if you need a home visit. If you are housebound and aged under 65, please let the receptionist know as we may need to make a special arrangement if the vaccine has not yet been delivered. Bookable appointments will be available for patients who are unable to attend the walkin clinics and these will be late evenings and Saturday mornings. Please telephone the surgery after 11.00 am to make your appointment. If you are an eligible at risk patient aged under 65, please check with the receptionist for up to date information about the delivery before booking your appointment. Closed for training The Dispensary is closed for staff training every Wednesday 12-1pm. Minor eye conditions service (MECS) The following conditions can be seen under the minor eye conditions service at Rawlings Opticians, they usually offer clinics six days a week, Monday to Saturday and the scheme is hopeful to reduce the attendance of patients attending eye casualty or GP practices by treating most eye conditions at local optical practices.
Where should I go? Opticians offering the service are listed at https://pecsouthern.org.uk/opticians/ participating-opticians/ An appointment will normally be required, so telephone first. Appointments are available during normal working hours and some practices offer appointment at weekends. Not all practices have an optometrist available every day, but if they don’t, they will be able to find you an alternative appointment nearby. Who is this service for? If you are registered with a local GP you can use this free service. It is for people of all ages – adults and children. Children under 16 years must be accompanied at their appointment by an adult. How do I book an appointment with the service? To make an appointment, call your own optician and see whether they are taking part in this service, or call one of the opticians listed at www. pecsussex.org.uk/patients.You will be asked some questions about your symptoms in order to assess how quickly you need to be seen by the service, which will be within 24 hours in urgent cases and within five days for routine appointments. Please take your glasses and a list of your current medication with you to the appointment. The optometrist may put drops in your eyes to enlarge your pupils in order to get a better view inside your eyes. You should not drive until the effects of these drops have worn off, which may take a few hours. If your condition is more serious, the optometrist will book you an urgent appointment at a hospital eye clinic. If you need a routine appointment with a hospital, the optometrist will organise this for you.You may also be advised to make an appointment with your GP if your eye condition is in relation to your general health. Admin email address Please can we remind patients not to use the admin email address for specific medical advice/enquiries. Although the admin email address is monitored regularly, it should not be used by patients wanting to bypass seeing a GP or for anything urgent or life threatening. If your enquiry is regarding symptoms please use the e-consult facility, available on our website; https://
alresfordsurgery.webgp.com/ Text Message Reminders Do you receive text message reminders for your surgery appointments and other health information? If you don’t, or you’re not sure, please visit our website and at the bottom of the home page there is a link called ‘Text Message Reminders’. Here you will find a consent form which you can complete and send to us. As well as appointment reminders we also use the text service to occasionally send other health related information, such as details of our flu vaccination programme. The appointment reminders also have a reply facility to enable you to easily cancel your appointment if you no longer need it.

SAMHAIN FESTIVAL AT BUTSER ANCIENT FARM Join us to celebrate the evening of Samhain in the magical surroundings of the Great Roundhouse at Butser Ancient Farm. Between 7-10pm you will enjoy live music, professional storytelling by Jonathon Huet of Walk with Trees and a bar with local ales. Samhain is a Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, or the ‘darker half ’ of the year.Traditionally, it is celebrated from 31 October to 1 November as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. This falls about halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Like Beltain, Samhain was seen as a liminal time when the boundary between this world and the next could be crossed more easily, and this meant the spirits and fairies could more easily come into our world. These fairies needed to be propitiated to ensure the people and their livestock survived the winter, so offerings of food and drink were left outside for them. The souls of the dead were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality, so feasts were arranged at which the souls of dead kin were beckoned to attend and place set at the table for them. A BIT OF A PICKLE R © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2019
eturning from holiday and heaving the suitcases through the back door, the tomato plants caught her eye. Bowed under the weight of fruit, coloured through the spectrum of darkest green to rosiest red, they had exceeded all expectations. With only a patio to call a garden, but a surfeit of containers, she’d dedicated the sunniest corner to an assortment of tomato varieties. Like the rats of Hamelin, there were great ones, small ones, lean ones and brawny ones. They’d been eating them all summer - sliced in salads, grilled with bacon, roasted with lamb. They’d been giving them away to friends and family all summer too. She noticed that her obliging neighbour from over the garden fence had kept the plants well watered whilst they’d been away, but hadn’t made much of a dent in the crop, in spite of being told to help herself. The next morning, after a good night’s sleep back in her own bed and nursing a cup of tea that tasted exactly as it should, she surveyed the fruit. So late in the season, the green ones wouldn’t have much of a chance to ripen. The red ones were too numerous to eat raw before rotting; they went off a lot quicker than shop bought. A freezer already stocked with home-made passata meant that she had only a couple of options left.
Torn between ketchup and chutney, she chose chutney. Vague memories of her mother making a gallon of tomato ketchup some decades previously, coloured her decision. The resulting somewhat watery sauce had been ‘interesting’ in flavour but nothing like the stuff that, in those days, came in glass bottles that needed a good thump on the bottom to get it moving. Mum’s ketchup collection had hovered in the store cupboard for years, gradually making its way towards the dark at the back of the inaccessible top shelf, before mysteriously disappearing altogether at the turn of the century. Telling herself she didn’t need to venture to the shops for ingredients, she retrieved some apples from the freebie fallers’ basket across the road and substituted dates for sultanas. Sugar, garlic and onions were always about. Mustard seed she had – because of the saag aloo that was a bit of a family favourite; cloves were waiting for bread sauce. Surprisingly, powdered ginger was in the cupboard too because… she couldn’t remember why. Ad lib-ing with one or two other ignored spices, she included a bag of chilli flakes too as an afterthought. Now, vinegar.. Recollecting seeing a big jar of it somewhere strange, she eventually located some malt pickling vinegar under the sink with the cleaning products. Raiding the glass recycling basket by the back door, she put a motley assortment of jars in
WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM the dishwasher. She was good to go!
The resulting concoction smelled quite nice. Her husband said so too, so it wasn’t her imagination. Although it had taken a lot longer to reduce than she’d thought it would, the consistency looked right as she ladled the brownish sludge into the jars, feeling very seasonal and a little bit domestic goddess-y. Rounding off the whole exercise with attractive labels that she’d designed and printed herself and colourful fabric lid covers, she arranged the chutneys on a shelf and planned to give some away as Christmas gifts. A few weeks later, her husband was having some cheese and biscuits and expressing a wish to try her chutney. Choosing a rather attractive hexagonal jar from her hoard, she handed it to him with a smile on her face and a small glow of pride in her heart. “Nnngghh.” A strangled noise escaped him as he chewed, his eyes bulging a little. Swallowing and taking a large gulp of beer to follow it down, he caught his breath and announced that it was ‘interesting’ (uh-oh) and possibly needed to ‘mature’ for a bit longer. “Really?” She hadn’t actually tasted it herself, so she dropped a large blob on a cracker and took a bite. To say it was viciously acerbic with the heat of a thousand dragons, didn’t quite do it justice. She felt her gums shrivel; her tongue tried to crawl away. Valiantly, she swallowed, also washing it down with a swig or three of his beer. “Yes, perhaps a bit longer.” She agreed in a small, slightly squeaky voice, abandoning ideas of gifting it. At least, not to anyone she liked. Breaking out a jar of Branston, her husband sweetly shone a small ray of hope. “I read somewhere that the original Worcestershire sauce tasted so vile that they locked it in a cellar for a few years - and then discovered its aged deliciousness by accident.” He said, encouragingly. But it was with a certain degree of sadness and a belated sympathy with her poor old Mum, that she relegated her chutneys to a little-used top shelf. A dark half-way house to a mysterious disappearance at some unknown future date probably, she thought, as she closed the cupboard door. Never mind, her patio was going to be wall to wall strawberries next summer. Jam had only two ingredients. What could possibly go wrong?

CITIZENS ADVICE WINCHESTER Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, gives advice on an extension to the Blue Badge scheme. My mum has a non-visible disability, which causes her walking difficulties. I heard something on the news about how she may now be eligible for a blue badge. How can I find out about this and help her apply? On 30 August, the Blue Badge scheme was extended to people who live in England and have non-visible disabilities or conditions which affect their ability to walk. As a result, your mother may now qualify for a badge. Your mother will be automatically eligible if she gets certain types of benefits. These include some categories of Personal Independence Payment and the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.
Autumn is starting to paint its colours as I write this, but the sun was shining as fellow Trustee, Kim Adams, and I talked with visitors about The Watercress Way at the Alresford Show. We were kindly hosted by Hellards this year. Many people came along to talk to them, drink their prosecco and then talked to us about the ways in which they can volunteer or use the long distance path! You can see more about events or sign up for our fundraising quiz on November 17th by going to www.thewatercressway.org.uk If you went to the Littleton or Alresford Show you may have seen the pink tents of Hampshire’s Fostering and Adoption service there. This summer, I have visited several homes around the County for children who are in the County Council’s care. Newly built in the last few years, the new homes are more like family houses than the old institutions, but with over 1200 children in care, more foster parents are desperately needed. If you are interested in being a foster parent, go to www.hants.gov.uk/socialcareandhealth/adoptionandfostering for more details. The County Council is having to make annual reductions of £80million revenue per year from 2021. Each round of Government cuts bites deeper into essential services. If you have an elderly relative who needs help or care, or a young person in your family has special needs, or you use the recycling centre, catch a rural bus, use a street parking space, apply for a disabled car parking pass, or visit a country park, this will affect you.The County is looking for ways to generate income from some of these activities to keep the essential services going. Do you have an idea to reduce waste? Maybe an idea for a book or a local scheme? You can apply for a grant to help you. Each County Councillor also has a pot of grant money for the community: usually I can offer around £500, but a REALLY good idea could attract a bigger grant! If you have a great idea , please contact me to explain how a grant could help and for details of how to apply. COMMUNITY enthralling age. David Musgrove, BBC History Magazine Content Director, says: “We’re very excited to have new venues for our annual weekends. Winchester and Chester are both great places to visit for history enthusiasts, all the more so when you can come along to our events and listen to such a fantastic range of speakers. We are delighted that so many great historians and writers have been able to join us once more, and we look forward to what promises to be two more great weekends of history this autumn”. BBC HISTORY MAGAZINE’S HISTORY WEEKENDS BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend festivals are back this autumn for the seventh year running, with a new venue, and its best line up yet. Set in two idyllic locations across two weekends, the team travels to a new location, in Chester, at Chester Town Hall between 25th and 27th October and then back to the medieval city of Winchester between 1st and 3rd November. Over the course of these two packed weekends, we’ll have 40 diverse and engaging talks, interactive Q&As and book signings from the world’s leading historians and authors including Michael Wood, Alison Weir, Dan Jones, Tracy Borman and BBC Radio 4’s Jenni Murray.
BOO AT THE ZOO
Several guests will be appearing across both weekends, including Suzannah Lipscomb, Tracy Borman, Alison Weir, Michael Wood and Tom Penn. BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend returns to Winchester from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd November after last year’s hugely successful event. This time round, the venue is the magnificent Guildhall, the Victorian building that sits at the heart of the historic city. Historian Alison Weir will be discussing Anna of Kleve: Queen of Secrets, revealing a charming woman loved by all who knew her – even by the king who rejected her. Historian and broadcaster Lucy Worsley’s illustrated talk takes a tour of the country to see where Jane Austen lived. Dispelling the myth of the cynical lonely spinster, Lucy instead offers us a witty and passionate woman of her time, who refuses to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy. Bestselling author Dan Jones examines the Crusades, in an epic and deeply human history of an Saturday 26 October - Thursday 31 October • Monster trail, around the zoo 10am – 5pm • Decorate a wand for a witch or wizard • 10.30am – 3.00pm (*£1 fee applies) • Make your own Monster to take home 10.30am – 3.00pm (*£1 fee applies)
History Fringe also returns this year where, as well as the main lectures series, festival visitors can also enjoy free short sessions guaranteed to keep you occupied and informed between talks. Taking place throughout Saturday and Sunday, the History Weekends have partnered with scholars from the universities of Winchester and Chester who will host these educational taster sessions on a broad range of fascinating topics. See the full line-up for both events, and details of how to buy tickets at www. historyextra.com/evemts or call 0871 620 4021. Subscribers to BBC History Magazine can take advantage of a reduced rate for all ticket options, and there are discounts for visitors buying tickets for both festivals. QI GONG AND TAI CHI FOR HEALTH AND HAPPINESS
Nine year old Jacob and his mum Sarah feed Fredericka the tortoise
There was face painting and tattoos with a Disney Princess, arts and crafts, messy play (including large quantities of pasta), as well as fishing for ducks, toy cars and the sandpit enjoyed by all ages, which ranged from eight months to 10 years. Lunch was a picnic in the meadow and ice creams were donated by Judes, there was even a guest appearance by Fredericka the 60 year old tortoise. Magic Jack provided a thrilling finale with his balloon modelling and his magic tricks brought shrieks of excitement. Everyone went home exhausted and happy after a day packed full of fun and laughter.
Why not take some time out to look after yourself this autumn? Nurture and care for your body, mind and soul with these simple self healing exercises. We meet on Tuesday evenings at 7pm – 8pm at Avington & Itchen Abbas Village Hall. Taijiwuxigong is a system of Qi Gong and Tai Chi with both moving and standing exercises to improve health (skeletal, muscular, respiratory, blood pressure, digestion, hormones, posture and nervous system). And there are mental benefits too! This is a moving meditation, meaning regular exercise can reduce stress. People report clearer mental functioning and feeling happier and stronger with exercise. Not only does this have a positive effect on our emotional and mental balance but it enables further possibilities for real life change. Through specific focus and body alignment it is possible to activate other systems within the body. Using the centre of gravity, breath and focus, we can become aware of the main
energetic centre and allow this to clear the energetic meridians and channels. And most importantly, it is fun to practise! We are a small, friendly group of beginners and experienced practitioners. Everyone is welcome!

F EATURE
FAIR ACCESS FOR ALL AT OUR COUNTRY PARKS Hampshire’s country parks are much loved by visitors of all ages and abilities – whether walking the dog, playing in the playgrounds, or simply enjoying the scenery Now, with big investments going into these treasured public spaces, the County Council hopes even more people will visit, more often, and stay longer. The improvements are also designed to make access fair for all visitors. We spoke to our Countryside team to find out more. What improvements are being made? Investment in our biggest country parks is improving and updating facilities and bringing lots of things to do like new play trails and better access. There are some big new special features, too: at Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley you can now explore the iconic chapel of the former Military Hospital. At Lepe Country Park, you can enjoy the stunning view of the Solent Coast, from our smart new restaurant ‘The Lookout’. Even more exciting features are in store next year, at Staunton and Queen Elizabeth Country Parks. Who will benefit? With outdoor activities being so important to people’s health, we want to make sure everyone is able to reach the parks and the key attractions on each site. To make access equal for all, we’re levelling paths, putting in board walks where the ground is boggy, and putting in new accessible toilets for our visitors. The newly-restored chapel has a lift, so that visitors with different kinds of access needs can enjoy the tower. It is vital that everyone can use our beautiful public spaces, and we hope our investments are removing the barriers that sometimes prevent people from venturing out. How do the parks pay for maintenance of their facilities? Maintaining our country parks is a costly business. Our rangers and volunteers work tirelessly to clear paths; maintain play equipment and benches as well as other facilities such as toilets, signage and
picnic tables. As well as looking after our visitors we also look after nature, managing habitats so that wildlife can thrive. With dwindling council budgets, we are planning ahead to make sure country parks can still be looked after in the future. This means generating more money on-site to pay for park upkeep, by attracting more visitors to come more often. It also means making sure that those who do visit us, contribute towards the cost. Is that why visitors pay to park? Yes. Car park revenue is a substantial part of the income that keeps our country parks viable. In the past, many visitors avoided paying for their parking, which made it difficult for us to meet our costs, and was unfair on those who followed the rules and paid their share. So now, as part of our access improvements, we have implemented a new system that ensures everyone pays fairly to park their car. All the money generated by car parking goes towards the running of the parks. Tell us about the new parking system. What do visitors need to know? We are now implementing an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system in our largest parks. The new modern machines make paying for parking easier – you can use cash or card, and you don’t need to guess how long you’ll be staying. Cameras identify your car, and ensure that when you leave, you pay for the right length of time. You can also buy a season ticket if you park regularly which is fantastic value for money. We now charge all visitors for car parking, including disabled visitors. We want our parks to be accessible to everyone, and we want everyone to help pay for them. This helps us keep our country parks open well into the future, so that more generations can explore and enjoy our beautiful countryside. ALRESFORD HEARING STUDIO Ear Wax Ear wax is not actually a bad thing, in fact it is a protection mechanism for the ear canal. The issue only occurs when there is too much. As the ear wax builds up, it blocks the canal causing some issues with hearing. If the ear wax becomes impacted against the ear drum, it can even be painful. Typically, the first time many realise they have a problem is when they have a shower or get out of a swimming pool. Suddenly, they can’t hear out of one or both ears. This is because ear wax is like a sponge, it soaks up the water and expands within the ear canal, completely blocking it. Do you suffer from any of these symptoms? • A feeling of fullness in the ear • The sensation of hearing everything muffled • Mild tinnitus (A Ringing In the ears) • Sudden hearing loss after swimming or showering If any of these symptoms sound familiar then you could have excess ear wax blocking your ear canal.
Business is an independent provider of hearing care solutions owned and operated as a family enterprise by Samuel, Helen & Jodie Longman. Sam is a qualified hearing aid audiologist authorised to practise by the Health care professions council. Prior to establishing this new venture Sam was working for a well-known national hearing company managing one of the companies busiest branches at Ferndown in Dorset, whilst also supporting customers across Hampshire and Dorset through home visits. Helen has been involved in the hearing care industry for many years ultimately responsible for the smooth running of 20 branches for a national chain across the south of England whilst Jodie also has significant experience in customer facing roles and is renowned for delivering exceptional customer service. Sam’s aspiration has always been to open his own Hearing Studio as he passionately believes in delivering a more personal service to customers.
How ear wax build-up occurs Under normal circumstances wax in the ears is totally normal; as we said, we need a little of it to maintain a healthy ear. Wax is produced just inside the entrance to the ear canal. It lubricates the skin and helps prevent dust and air borne bacteria from entering. A normal ear canal has a self-cleaning mechanism, where the small hairs in the canal encourage the wax and shredded skin towards the canal entrance. If there is no hair there or the ear canal is narrow or an unusual shape it is sometimes impeded, resulting in a build-up of wax that may need removing.
After reviewing multiple sites it transpired that one of Sam’s existing customers had a site available and after some discussion Sam & Helen successfully secured premises at 42 West Street in Alresford, which they feel is “in a perfect location to serve the community’’ by offering a fully immersive, friendly and comfortable experience to address all hearing healthcare needs”. Sam will also offer home appointments, outside clinics and audiology education through community & sports clubs by prior arrangement. Sam explains that the company’s mission is “to provide the highest standards of hearing care and the latest technology to the local community, whilst still offering a professional and personal service that is second to none” The Alresford Hearing Studio team will achieve this by offering truly independent advice to each customer on hearing aid provision, wax removal, nosie protection, tinnitus management and all other audiology needs to enhance quality of life.
