Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
Ben came and sized up replacement doors and cupboards for our existing kitchen and while there we took the opportunity to enquire about a kitchen bookcase and a new cupboard. Nothing was any problem for Ben to put into the design. The date for the kitchen refit was organised really quickly and was set for a couple of weeks after the quote, both of which were excellent. The end result was a kitchen which has been transformed beyond recognition with major additions of a breakfast bar and extra new and replacement cupboards. We are so impressed with the finish that we have asked Ben to measure up for some bespoke non standard size bedroom cabinets that we would like them to build. In summary quality work carried out by highly skilled tradesmen. Pity there are only five stars.
Mr P. Ramage
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

ART FOR ST PETER’S
COUNCILLOR - MARGOT POWER Aren’t we lucky? To live in an area where we can disagree with courtesy and respect? In our third visit to your doorsteps this year we have been able to have constructive conversations about the state of the nation, the planet, and so much more. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful 2020. Bins. The new contract continues to surprise us, if not delight. The change of times still catches me out. Some homes were deemed unsuitable for glass collection, you can check if you are on this list by entering your postcode and house name at https:// www.winchester.gov.uk/bins Then downloading the calendar and checking for a bottle sign. We are reviewing these areas, please let me know if you are affected.
The Appeal Team for St Peter’s Church, Ropley are planning a fundraising event for February 2020 – Art for St Peter’s. They are looking for artists to contribute towards the growing plethora of wonderful pieces already received from professional and amateur artists which will be sold blind in February. All the proceeds from Art for St Peter’s will contribute towards the rebuilding of St. Peter’s, the 12th Century church in Ropley which was destroyed by fire in 2014. Although the insurance claim covers the costs of the basic rebuild, completing phase one bringing the building up to modern-day standards the community currently still needs to raise approximately £200,000. Artists are being asked to support the project by contributing art in their chosen medium. This can be a simple sketch, a photograph, watercolour, textile, sculpture or something more detailed. It can be in any size, although all pieces (or photographs of pieces which may be larger will be placed in an A5 envelope maintaining the element of surprise! The team have set themselves an ambitious target of 400 pieces. These are being requested by the end of December so that they can be photographed and put up, anonymously, on a website advertising the event as well as being shared on Instagram @stpetersropley and other social media. Details of the event on 22nd February will be advertised in the New Year. For now the focus is on collecting in artwork. Are you an artist? Do you know any artists? Would you be willing to contribute towards this project? Please do get in touch – artforstpeters@gmail.com.
AVINGTON PARK GOLF COURSE Thursday 14th November saw past Captains, Lin Derrick and Dave Rice-Smith present a cheque to Winchester Hospice in respect of funds raised during their captaincies. The total amount raised was £5049 which is an unbelievable amount for a small but delightfully formed 9-hole golf course in the Itchen Valley. This is a very friendly club which is evidenced by the way the members came together to support this worthy cause. If you haven’t played there yet – give it a go.
We still have some persistent non-collections, report every one please. The vast majority of us are now having our all waste collected but some problems persist. Again, I am able to thank you for not being rude to the Bin Men, they are doing an essential job in all weathers; you were generous with support in the very hot weather, and have been sympathetic in the current challenges. As part of our Climate Emergency plans Winchester Council intend to pilot a new build scheme to Passivhaus standard; we were able to attend a presentation for Officers and Councillors. The principles are applicable to both domestic and commercial buildings; 58% of the Winchester District carbon emissions in 2017 were from commercial and domestic energy use. The Royal Institute of Surveyors Whole Life Carbon Assessment of built structures shows that only 22% of our carbon is in the lifetime ‘use for purpose’ of buildings; 73% is used in the raw materials, transportation and manufacture; and 5% in end of life management. This highlights the importance of careful maths when considering the destruction of an existing building for new build, where retrofitting energy conservation measures may be better for carbon reduction. This is on the agenda for Winchester Council as well. Remember that you can give to the Winchester Basics Bank at the Alresford Co-op, Waitrose Stockbridge Road and Sainsbury’s Badge Farm. The current needs can be seen at https:// winchesterbasicsbank.co.uk/donate/ Our next Councillor Surgery is 0930-1045 Friday 6th December, at Alresford Community Centre, by kind permission of the Trustees. Cllr Russell Gordon-Smith will take this as I am at an Emergency Planning seminar.

THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE WAS 20 YEARS AGO A proverb says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now”. Trees take decades to reach maturity and provide their greatest visual and ecological benefits. They are a gift to future generations. Always check that your tree is UK grown. Importing stock risks introducing pests and diseases such as Oak Processionary Moth. When selecting a site for planting, visualise how large the tree might become. Could it block a view, cast shade onto a patio or swamp a building at maturity? Inappropriate siting results in unnecessary pruning or felling. The best months to plant are November or December. Avoid planting during sub-zero temperatures; this can damage sensitive roots, and the ground is too hard to dig! To plant your tree, dig a square-shaped hole to the depth of the rootball and between 1.5 - 2 times wider. Don’t break up the bottom of the hole as was once standard practice. Separate topsoil from subsoil. Don’t worry about adding organic matter, fertiliser or mycorrhizal dips. These are usually unnecessary. Tall, top-heavy trees with no lower branches, trees in exposed locations or near heavy traffic may need staking. Drive two stakes 30cm into the pit at the width of the rootball, in line with the prevailing wind. Position these before planting to avoid root damage. Lower the tree into the pit, ensuring the root flare is at ground level.
Burying the root flare causes roots to grow upwards potentially causing a structural defect. Backfill with subsoil then topsoil. Squash this down so that it feels firm but not compacted. Fix the stem to the stakes with Hessian, but not so tight that it prevents natural movement. The aim is to stimulate stem thickening and support root development. You’ll need to water it immediately. For trees other than whips, completely soak the rootball with approximately 20L. Spread a 10cm deep circle of composted hardwood woodchip to 1m around the stem, leaving a mulch-free donut around the base. This reduces evaporation from the soil, moderates soil temperature and inhibits weeds. Water weekly while the tree is growing (March-early September) for at least 2 years while the root system establishes; water frequently during hot, dry periods, don’t wait for leaves to wilt. Rainfall doesn’t often percolate deeper than a few centimetres, so you’ll need to keep watering unless its particularly persistent or heavy. Keep the mulch topped up to maximise water economy. After two years, remove the stakes as the tree should have developed a healthy root system. It may be necessary now to carry out formative pruning to improve structure and form.Your tree surgeon will be able to advise you on this. For further advice, contact the Arboricultural Association at www.trees.org.uk. By A. Maskill

KIDS CAMPAIGN FOR A ‘GREEN’ CHRISTMAS
Claire Scullion, Mum of two-year old Manus who took part in the protest, said, “The amount of plastic waste dumped into the environment is a huge source of concern for me as a parent. Where I can, I try to buy non-plastic and sustainable toys, but until now the choice has been really limited. “It’s encouraging to see more toy manufacturers like Ekolife bringing non-toxic toys to market. Parents now have the option to make the right decision and impact their children’s future.” Environmentalists have confirmed that plastic toys are indeed contributing to the amount of plastic ending up in landfill and oceans. Just yesterday, Friends of the Earth plastic campaigner Denis Fernando spoke out, condemning toy manufacturers for making plastic toys and calling on the government to act.
A group of children from across the UK joined forces today (Thursday 14th November) to send a clear message to toy manufacturers - don’t put plastic in our toys! With just 41 days to go until Christmas, the children took part in the march in freezing cold temperatures, as many of the UK's major toy retailers unveiled their "top ten toys" for Christmas - a list packed with plastic designs, which environment campaigners have condemned for featuring 'over packaged plastic tat'. The protest, organised by Smurfit Kappa to mark the launch of its new biodegradable toy range, Ekolife, saw the toddlers brandish placards reading “Say No to Plastic” and “Fossil FOOLS”. The children were aged between 2 and 7 years old, and the event took place in Glasgow’s civic square, George Square. Last year, UK parents spent more than £370 million on toys. This year it’s expected that parents will purchase an average of 19 toys ahead of Christmas morning – with plastic-heavy brands, such as LEGO, Disney-themed merchandise and Star Wars toys, all set to take their place under the tree.
STAY WARM THIS WINTER Heating your home can be expensive and sometimes difficult. Get help with staying warm and well with the Hitting the Cold Spots advice line, open to all Hampshire residents. A spokesperson for Ekolife, said “The design of today’s protest was to get the attention of parents and, more importantly, other toy manufacturers. There’s scope for retailers to be doing much, much more too and we urge them to consider stocking sustainable toy brands moving forward. Perhaps next year we’ll see plastic-free toy departments. That’s the dream.” Earlier this month, Head Christmas Buyer at John Lewis, Dan Cooper, reported that “wooden toy sales [are] already up 21% this year compared to 2018”. In 2018, UK consumers spent £370 million on toys, and a survey by the British Heart Foundation found that, on average, children in the UK have four toys they have never played with. Ekolife was born from Smurfit Kappa’s values of responsibility for the environment and their constant curiosity, innovation and search for solutions. They have created durable toys for people who want to create a better planet using only eco-friendly cardboard that’s renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. • To view the brand new Ekolife collection, which is 100% renewable, 100% recyclable & 100% biodegradable, please visit: www.ekolife.co.uk/shop

GARDEN FEATURE
THE HOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2019 “I’ve been looking forward to this.” A hiss escaped the bottle of beer when he popped the top. As she dished up the takeaway, he passed her the amber fizz. They chinked glasses. “Happy Christmas, darling.” The kids were off in foreign climes and, for the first Christmas since becoming parents, it was just the two of them. Curry for dinner on Christmas Eve, extravagant lobster and chips planned for the next day, Boxing Day lunch booked at the village pub. No epic exercise in decorating either. Boxes of baubles, the accumulation of years generations even, languished in the loft. They were calling their Yuletide ‘Alternative’. Settling on the sofa, tray on lap, she reached for the festive edition of the Radio Times they bought every year. Except this one.. Seizing the remote, he pressed a button. “Agatha Christie all-star special on in half an hour.” “I can’t shake off a vague feeling of guilt.” She said, spooning aubergine pickle onto her plate. “I’m usually knee deep in sprouts about now, feverishly wrapping pigs in blankets, with a hand up the turkey - groping for giblets.” He laughed “And I’d be topping up Auntie Phoebe’s sherry glass and bringing Uncle Norman more nuts. She’d be hogging the TV, in between herding us all off to church - morning, noon and midnight mass. He’d be droning on about birdies and eagles – the girls thought he was a super-boring bird watcher. I wouldn’t have minded, but they weren’t even rellies, just neighbours of your Mum’s!” “We sort of inherited them.” She smiled fondly at the memory of that first Christmas Eve after her mother’s death. The kids had sprinted, wide-eyed and excited into the kitchen to break the news. “Mummymummy, Feeble and Normal are here. They’ve got a suitcase..!” When they passed away, Auntie P and Uncle N were sincerely missed. They’d become another Christmas ingredient – like the Queen’s speech – and it wasn’t quite the same without them. Over the years though, other waifs and strays came and went. Their daughters acquired boyfriends. Plus a boyfriends’ sister, who brought their newly divorced mother along. The following year the divorcee mother rocked up with her boyfriend. Somehow, the ex-husband with his new partner also wangled an invitation. All jolly civilised. For Christmas, anyway. Bleeping - one of the offspring messaged. “Happy Christmas! Already 25th and hot here! Have a wonderful stress-free time – no
WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM staying up ‘till silly o’clock going to church and no feeding of the five thousand tomorrow.Yay!” She didn’t feel very Yay! but managed something cheery in reply. Welling up, she imagined Christmas morning without the children leaping on the bed, clutching their stockings and squealing. Other daughter touched base “Heard from the second favourite child yet? Blizzard here! Carp for dinner – yuk.. Love you - eat, drink and be selfish for once.” Texting back their snow envy, they resumed their meal “Our Christmas – she’s right - is a selfish one. And I think that’s a good thing.” He observed, a little too heartily, tearing off a bit of keema naan. “The kids are doing exactly what they want and so, for a change, are we.” He nodded at her, encouragingly. But OH how she missed it! Her inner masochist craved the drudgery and chaos. The endless lists of things to do. The going to bed exhausted in the early hours of Christmas Day after the annual guilt trip to the church. Bodies all over the house, sleeping on beds, sofas and floors. The constant cooking, clearing up and cups of tea. She sighed nostalgically. They were lifted a little by the excellent whodunit and delicious curry; “And a bit left over” he observed, taking the plates out. Back in their dating days, they’d discovered a shared guilty pleasure; cold curry on hot buttered toast for breakfast. Soulmates. Just now she could have done with something sweet, though - and fleetingly longed for green triangles and purples ones. Not this year – decided they didn’t need all that chocolate. Just the two of them… “Nightcap?” He reappeared with glasses of flaming Sambuca, instead of the usual eggnog. Impressive, but yet another break with tradition, she thought as she went to the window and tweaked the curtain aside. The ground was white! Snowflakes were falling softly, silently. The forecast of snow had, for once, become actual, real, snow. Peering out at their surprising white Christmas, they toasted each other. “To absent loved ones.” And sipped. “To Christmases past.” “The power cut turkey.” “The mysterious case of the missing Barbie leg.” “The Boxing Day ‘flu.” Their glasses nearly drained, they raised them one last time. “To Phoebe and Norman, without whom we’d never have discovered our lovely village church” he conceded. She took his hand. “Our alternative, stress-free and selfish Christmas needs one ritual, at least.” And grabbing their coats they strolled arm in arm through the whirling flakes and towards the golden glow of midnight mass.

BEES IN THE SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK TO BENEFIT FROM £50,000 NATURE CAMPAIGN
granted. But species that we might think of as commonplace, like bees, butterflies and red squirrels, are actually under threat. Forest Holidays and the UK National Parks #givenatureabreak campaign is a brilliant way to support some of the threatened species that make our National Parks so special.” Cat Hawkins, Chair of National Parks Partnerships, says: “Forest Holidays’ support this November will make a huge difference to the National Parks’ bees, butterflies and red squirrels. The National Parks are vital places for wildlife but we need more funding to protect it.” To find out more information on the projects supported please visit: https://www.forestholidays.co.uk/
Bees in the South Downs National Park are set to benefit this month from a partnership between the UK’s National Parks and Forest Holidays. Forest Holidays has today launched their 2019 Black Friday offer called ‘Give Nature a Break’ which will see a £20 donation from every sale made between today and December 3rd to support five species conservation projects in the National Parks. Forest Holidays aims to donate in excess of £50,000 in total, of which the Bee Lines project will receive a share. Customers will also receive up to 20 per cent off bookings during the same period. Bee Lines is being spearheaded by the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity for the National Park, and is aiming to reverse the decline of bees.

The charity will work with farmers and other landowners to create new wildflower corridors – essentially a “road system” for insects – that will link habitats and encourage pollination. It comes as statistics show one-third of Britain’s bee population have disappeared over the past decade due to changes in land use, intensification of farming methods, habitat loss and climate change.

Just £2.50 will help create a new square metre of wildflower meadow to support an abundance of bee pollinator species. Nick Heasman, Countryside Policy Manager for the South Downs National Park, said: “Our bees are in trouble and have been for quite a while, so Bee Lines is our way of fighting back and protecting these vital pollinators. “When you consider that bees pollinate around one-third of food crops and 90 per cent of wild plants, which in turn provides food for livestock, you can see the scale of the crisis. “We’d had lots of interest since launching the campaign and now to have the support of Forest Holidays is a tremendous boost. “Every penny raised will make a real difference in helping to protect and enhance biodiversity.” Julia Bradbury, co-founder of The Outdoor Guide, said: “It’s easy to take the wildlife we see in our beautiful National Parks for

FULLY PARTICIPATE & ENJOY ALL THE FESTIVE SEASON HAS TO OFFER THIS YEAR What would YOU miss most during the Holiday Season if a Hearing Loss Developed?
A Survey by Action on Hearing Loss identified some unsurprising but impactful results. People imagined missing out on a number of key elements of the festive season that other take for granted such as; • The sound of Christmas Carols • The Classic Christmas Songs on the radio • The Soundtrack to much loved festive Films
But what they thought they would miss the most was not being able to fully participate in conversations with family and friends As Christmas is the season of goodwill and merriment, all should be allowed to partake equally in the festive fun so Sam Longman resident Audiologist at the Alresford Hearing Studio has compiled these top tips for those with hearing loss, to help make the most of the time spent with loved ones this festive season
Some Top Tips for the Party Season
• Check that your hearing equipment is still right for you.Visit a skilled and experienced audiologist before the festive season for a free, comprehensive consultation .They can optimize your current hearing aids to suit noisy environments such as parties or restaurants and can recommend the equipment that handle these environments best • Check whether your hearing aids have directional microphones (two microphones instead of one), that are designed to reduce sounds from the side and the rear and focus on sounds in front of you. They will focus your hearing aids wherever your nose is pointing. So if you are facing into a noisy restaurant, the directional microphones will be focusing on the greatest amount of background noise. That is not good, when your hearing aids have directional microphones, the best spot to sit in is the one that will put room noise behind you. If you don’t have directional microphones, it may be time to consider an upgrade • Once you are confident in your equipment make sure you use it often, this allows your brain to adjust to different sounds over time o Using it only when you are faced with noisy situations tends to overwhelm the brain so you need to ‘train’ it to deal
with these situations. As you use them more your brain will start to distinguish between important and non-important sounds and adapts to the environment and makes it easier for you to follow the conversation. So start wearing your hearing aids every day in the weeks leading up to the Big Day!
When Out Socialising o o o o o o
If you have a choice between a long table or a booth, choose a booth this will allow you to be closer to the speaker at all times Don’t sit near the kitchen, at the bar or near the entrance to the restaurant. The ambient noise from these locations may be distracting If you are dining with a larger group, avoid sitting at the ends of the table. It is very difficult to hear from one end to the other so try to sit in the middle. Be realistic even people without hearing loss may struggle at this time of year Look above you - are you sitting directly under the air conditioning, fan or music speaker? sometimes the restaurant will agree to turn down the volume of the music if you explain that it is too loud for you to communicate with your dinner guests Look at the person who is talking. When you are in a challenging environment such as a restaurant, you are going to need to use some visual cues Enjoy yourself but don’t drink too much - drinking alcohol increases blood flow to the inner ear, which can cause tinnitus – a ringing, buzzing or swooshing sound in the ears. This condition should resolve itself in a few hours, but can still really compromise enjoyment
• The Alresford Hearing Studio can also service and fine tune all makes and models of hearing equipment. They are able to provide the optimum solution for you to enjoy the festive season. They can also check for wax build up in the Ear Canal and if necessary remove it using state of the art micro suction techniques. Come and see us today to ensure you get the most from the 2019 festive season. Call us on 01962 790749 to make an appointment with our friendly team

Ably supported by the team at The Arlebury led by Leigh-Ann and Becky, everyone was fed, watered and able to give their opinion from a World Cup Final(exactly...don't remember that!), to how we have fared throughout November. November saw both sides experience mixed fortunes. The Firsts narrowly lost to Bognor and New Milton, whilst the Seconds, despite losing to Winchester, finished the month beating Portsmouth away and currently sit 3rd in Hampshire 3. There have been injuries along the way to us and opposing sides. Both sides go into this December looking forward to your support.

All kicks are 2pm in December. We will be supporting a very important and poignant charity in next years London Marathon called Cardiac Risk In The Young. One of our most loyal players, Bert Watley, who lost his brother Alex in 2011, will be taking part. Details of fundraising and how you can contribute will appear in more detail in Januarys edition. www.c-r-v.org.uk. Thank you so much. Also its here again, and I'm not talking about Michael Buble and Christmas. Oh no, its the annual Alresford Rugby Club Christmas Party to be held at The Arlebury on the 14th December. Everyone welcome and at only £5 per head its worth the risk. Please look at our new website. www.alresfordrfc.co.uk for the very latest information. From everyone at Alresford Rugby Club, we wish you, your family and friends a very happy, lovely Christmas and briliant New Year."
CONCERT PREVIEW: ELGAR’S THE KINGDOM SATURDAY 7TH DECEMBER THE WAYNFLETE SINGERS’ BIG NIGHT OUT
Winchester Cathedral will resound to the lyrical music of Elgar’s mighty oratorio The Kingdom, as 150 singers take to the stage alongside The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in what promises to be a fabulous evening in on Saturday 7 December at 7.30 pm. Winchester’s Waynflete Singers are expanding their numbers with additional guest singers for this year’s Christmas concert. The work not only requires a large double choir but also a full symphony orchestra and four expressive soloists. This will in fact be the Waynflete Singers’ second performance of the work this season. They will be travelling at the end of November to team up with the Newcastle Bach Choir to perform it in Gateshead’s wonderful ‘Sage’ concert hall. Luckily the residents of Winchester need not go so far. Written after the Dream of Gerontius, The Kingdom has some of Elgar’s finest choral writing notably the ecstatic depiction of Pentecost, Mary's glowing aria The sun goeth down, and the devotional setting of the Lord's Prayer. The choir’s Musical Director, Andrew Lumsden, who will be conducting on the night, is known for his deep affinity for the choral music of Elgar and is being interviewed on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ in advance of the concert. To crown the performance there is a stellar line up of four soloists: one of Britain’s most sought-after and versatile tenors Ed Lyon; world renowned bass-baritone recitalist Stephan Loges; soprano Sophie Bevan who was appointed MBE in this year’s birthday honours list for services to music; and mezzo-soprano Katie Bray who won the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize in Cardiff Singer of the World 2019 - a rising star who is known for her magnetic stage presence and gleaming, expressive tone. The Cathedral Christmas Market will be in full swing in The Close next door, enabling the audience to imbibe a pre-concert glass of mulled wine, a festive prelude to this spectacular work, so rarely performed. Tickets are on sale from the Cathedral Box Office (01962 857275) Tickets £12.50 - £39.50 (2 for 1 offer on £19.50) www.tickets.winchester-cathedral.org.uk www.waynfletesingers.org.uk Registered Charity No. 285107

Whether through family difficulties, money problems or feeling lonely, Christmas can be a difficult time. And with all the pressure to enjoy the festivities, it can be hard to ask for help. Samaritans aim to support those struggling to cope during the festive period – you can too. Winchester Samaritans operates from an office in Upper High Street where over 90 volunteers listen to callers when they are finding life difficult. They listen on the telephone, via email and SMS and receive face-to-face visitors 365 days each year. Anne-Marie Drummond Winchester Branch Director explains, "Every month we answer over 1500 calls, 300 emails and 500 texts. Some who contact us are desperately lonely. Others need to talk through personal or work problems and some call because they are feeling suicidal” Over 5000 people took their own life in England in 2018, an increase of 12% on 2017. It is Samaritans’ aim to reduce this number by helping people to cope with their suicidal feelings before they get to that desperate stage. They respond to a call on average every 6 seconds. In the build up to Christmas peoples’ problems or feelings of depression and isolation can become overwhelming. Anne Marie says “We don't judge or give advice, we just try to listen and help callers to explore feelings that they cannot share with anyone else. Just giving someone that few minutes of our time to show that we care can make all the difference in their lives” You can help too. If you know someone who may be going through a hard time get in touch, or better still, go and see them and ask them how they are feeling. Just sparing some of your time will be the most valuable gift that you will give this Christmas. If you would like to find out more about volunteering at Winchester Samaritans, the branch runs regular information sessions at their offices, details can be found at www.winchestersamaritans.org.uk If you need confidential support yourself, call Samaritans free on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org.

WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS ICE RINK
WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS MARKET Now in its 13th year and recognised as one of the best in Europe and renowned for its spectacular location, the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market brings high quality exhibitors, wonderful Christmas gifts and an abundance of festive foods. Our Christmas Market is inspired by traditional German Christmas markets and attracts more than 350,000 visitors each year. The pretty wooden chalets are situated in the cathedral’s historic Close surrounding a real open-air ice rink. All our exhibitors have been hand-picked for their interesting, high quality and unique products many of which can’t be bought on the high street. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to food and drink at the Christmas Market. You’ll find chalets selling festive favourites such as, mulled wine, bratwurst, mince pies and stollen. Alternatively, our Cathedral Refectory and Ice Rink Café Bar & Kitchen provide a warm and comfortable setting with plenty of seating and great menus. We invite many British craftspeople to take part in the Christmas Market. If you’re looking for that special something make sure you visit the jewellers, painters, glass makers and textile artists selling unique gifts and decorations. Many of our exhibitors will be attending for the full 34 days but some will only be here for the first 14 days with new exhibitors filling the chalets for the last 14 days. Crowds – weekends are extremely busy and queues at entry points to the Christmas Market should be expected. If you can visit during the week from Monday – Friday you will experience a more leisurely visit and better opportunities to browse the 110 plus chalets. Wheelchair users – the Christmas Market is situated in the Cathedral Inner and Outer Close. Although we have worked hard to provide wheelchair access throughout the site some of our chalets remain inaccessible to wheelchair users. We have a team of stewards on duty at all times who are happy to provide assistance if requested. Please be aware that at weekends the Christmas Market is very busy and although level access and ramps are in place the crowds can make these hard to identify and utilise. Please take great care when visiting the site as there are areas of uneven ground and pavements which can be hazardous. Toilets – toilets and disabled toilets and baby changing facilities are available in the Cathedral Visitors’ Centre. There are no toilets in the main area of the Christmas Market. Dogs – dogs are allowed within the Christmas Market but must be on a lead or carried at all times. We do not recommend you bring dogs to the Christmas Market at weekends as the site is very busy. Open 10.30am – 6.30pm Sunday – Wednesday Free admission

FEATURE
A NEW LOOK FOR HAMPSHIRE’S TWISTED NOSE GIN Winchester Distillery has unveiled a stunning new design for its flagship gin, Twisted Nose. Using 20% less glass and 95% less plastic, Twisted Nose is now presented in a bespoke bottle that ripples and refracts like the surface of a Hampshire chalk stream, capturing the natural habitat of where it’s made.
Renowned for its nose-tickling tones of pepper and mustard, the botanical name for watercress, Nasturtium officinale, literally translates as “twisted nose”, which was the inspiration for the unusual name. Hampshire watercress is combined with juniper and eight other carefully selected botanicals, including coriander seed grown in the South Downs and lavender from Long Barn in Alresford to produce Twisted Nose. The final result is a herbaceous yet delicately floral dry gin, beginning with soft sweet citrus notes from pink grapefruit, then some spicy undertones, finishing with a peppery sparkle from the fresh watercress.
The award-winning spirit is gently distilled with fresh, peppery watercress, grown just outside the Old Alresford distillery door in pure chalk streams, to give it a unique and uplifting twist. The bottom of the new bottle proudly states in raised glass ‘Made in Hampshire’, whilst the new closure, which was a screw cap, is now a beautiful oak stopper. Originally launched five years ago as Winchester Distillery’s first spirit, the new branding is hoped to elevate the gin from a firm favourite in the South of England to a UK-wide and international brand. The concept for the bottle, branding and website was the work of Surrey based Valiant Design, who wanted to create a vibrant celebration of provenance and place that also captured the elegance of Twisted Nose. Paul Bowler, owner of Winchester Distillery, comments: “Twisted Nose was the first gin I created, which launched back in 2014. With the growth of the business and successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this year, it was the right time to reinvigorate Twisted Nose. The new design perfectly captures all the key elements of our delicious, flagship gin and will help us take it to a new level.”
WIN THE ULTIMATE TWISTED NOSE WATERCRESS GIN EXPERIENCE WORTH OVER £400 IN COLLABORATION WITH LAINSTON HOUSE Enter the prize draw at www. twistednose.co.uk/divein by Monday 23rd December 2019 to have the chance to win: • A bottle of Twisted Nose Gin • A tour and gin tasting for two at Winchester Distillery • Dinner, Twisted Nose Gin cocktails and an overnight stay with breakfast at Lainston House, an Exclusive Collection luxury hotel. Please see the website for full terms and conditions. Over 18s only please.
Twisted Nose is available from www.twistednose.co.uk or from many independent spirits retailers across Hampshire at an RRP of £37.95. Twisted Nose G&T For the perfect G&T, fill a high ball glass with good quality ice, the more ice you use the less it will dilute your drink, pour over 50ml of Twisted Nose Gin then top with a good quality tonic water such as FeverTree. Garnish with a slice or twist of pink grapefruit and enjoy! Watercress martini If you’re not so much of a tonic fan, not everyone likes the bitterness, then you could try making a classic martini. Chill a cocktail glass. Take 50ml of Twisted Nose Watercress Gin 50ml and 15ml of white vermouth such as Belsazar. If you have it, add two dashes of grapefruit bitters. Stir all ingredients together with large cubed ice for around 10-20 seconds & strain into the chilled glass.

A CELEBRATION OF INNOVATION AS WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK’S FIRST DESIGN AWARDS
Commenting on the awards, Ian Tant said: “Design is a key theme for the Royal Town Planning Institute and our work this year. “Put that alongside the fact that 2019 is also the 70th anniversary of the National Parks Act and the combination of National Parks and design are absolutely what the Royal Town Planning Institute is interested in. I’m absolutely delighted to be at the South Downs National Park’s first Design Awards and helping to take part in this ceremony.” Tim Slaney, Director of Planning at the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “Given that this is our first go at Design Awards across the whole of the National Park, this has been a wonderful initiative and I’d like to congratulate all the winners at the event.” Margaret Paren, Chair of the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “We believe that it is a privilege to build in a National Park. High-quality design matters to the National Park and to the local communities within it. “These schemes demonstrate incredible innovation and creativity, using the diverse landscape as a compass for great design.”
The winners have been announced for the South Downs National Park’s first Design Awards, recognising outstanding design projects in the first decade of the National Park. Architects, local community representatives, designers, and planners gathered at the South Downs Centre today (12 Nov) for a special awards ceremony, which was also attended by Ian Tant, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute. More than 60 nominations from across the National Park were received following the launch of the awards earlier this year. The awards celebrate innovative and inspirational projects that have made a standout contribution to the landscape, heritage, built environment and local communities of the National Park. Today held special significance as it was exactly 10 years since the Secretary of State signed the National Park’s official designation. The atmosphere in the Memorial Hall was one of anticipation, excitement, and joy as guests awaited the announcement of the winners. The winner of the Non-Residential Category went to Ditchling Museum, in Ditchling, East Sussex. Judges said the scheme “showcases really thoughtful architectural design, respecting and connecting with its history and setting”. In the Conservation Category, the winner went to King Edward VII Sanatorium, in Easebourne, West Sussex. Judges noted that there was “no finer example of conservation architecture” and “marveled at the consistency and attention to detail”. The winner of the Residential Category was The Riverside House, in South Street, Lewes, East Sussex. Judges were impressed by the way the design team had “exploited this space to its full value, with a robust yet graceful building of high architectural merit”. A special award for Innovation was given to Nithurst Farm, in Upperton, West Sussex. Judges remarked that the scheme “challenged perceptions” to the extent that it required its own award category. Judges said the scheme was “groundbreaking” and noted that it was a “bold and intellectual” building. Meanwhile, more than 1,200 votes were cast for the People’s Choice Award, which included an online poll for the public’s favourite among 16 shortlisted schemes. The winning trophy went to Easebourne Community Space, in Easebourne, West Sussex. It was noted that the scheme was an “impressive mix of play area and habitat creation” and a fine example of the “power of using the National Park for health and well-being purposes”. A number of schemes were also highly-commended or commended by the judges, which included members of the National Park’s Design Review Panel.

Maybe our actions on 12th December 2019 will reveal one way of resolving such issues in the 21st century! The Rotary Club of Alresford thanks Pains Fireworks for another wonderful show and all who contributed in any way to the success of the evening. Have a look at www.alresfordrotary.co.uk for the names of just some of the people who help make this annual event so special and to see some wonderful photos taken by Margaret Sheppard. Although the numbers attending the procession down West Street and the event were a little lower than in previous years, meaning that this year it will not be Alresford Rotary’s major source of charitable fund raising, many still gathered to enjoy the evening. Please let us have feedback via social media or by emailing rotalresford@yahoo.com or even by talking to a Rotarian! How can the event be improved in future years? Why did you give it a miss this year? Was it the wrong date? Was it because you were away for half term? Was it because the weather was so uninviting? What did you (not) like? Thank you to everyone who attended. Alresford Rotary has for over 20 years prided itself on putting on an event which is at the heart of Alresford’s community life and helps raise funds for those less fortunate than us. That aim continues and we look forward to your helping us achieve those objectives on (provisionally) a cold and frosty night on 6th November 2020! Let us know if you’d like to be involved. In the meantime don’t forget to buy your Christmas tree(s) from us at the top of Broad Street from 8.00 a.m. on Saturday 7th December. Come early to avoid disappointment (cash only) for the best choice and once again to help us raise monies for local, national and international causes. James Pinniger

ALRE SFORD Community Calendar The Town Council is pleased to provide sponsorship for the publication of this year’s Itchen Valley Calendar 2020. It can be used as a family planner and is beautifully presented, showcasing gorgeous pictures of our town and countryside. It includes an overview of the Council’s responsibilities and dates of council meetings. Even better it’s free! Not too surprisingly they are proving popular. Calendars are available at Hellards, The Co-op, The Arlebury Café and Bar, and New Alresford Town Council Offices. Lights, Camera, Action! There was some upset in the town when some residents thought that a popular teashop was under new management. However, it had only been changed temporarily to accommodate
Alresford in Summer The winners of the Alresford in Summer photography competition were chosen by Councillors at the last Full Council meeting. The winner of the adult category is Chantel Lewer with her photo “Summer Bee” and winner of the under 18s category is Emma Farrell with “A river to Remembrance”, which is featured in July of the Itchen Valley Calendar 2020. They will be presented with their prize at the next Town Council meeting. Congratulations to them both and our thanks to everyone who entered. Crime Prevention at Christmas Your community police
Association erect, maintain and then remove Christmas trees in the town centre for £60.00. This project is also supported by New Alresford Town Council who, along with the Chamber of Commerce, are contributing to a move to more energy efficient LED lights. This all enhances the festive latenight shopping event which will take place on 11th December 2019.

Join the Refill Revolution Refill is an award-winning campaign to prevent plastic pollution at source by making it easier to reuse and refill your water bottle on the go, rather than buy a single-use disposable plastic bottle. Wherever you see the Refill Sticker around town, you will be able ask the shop or business to fill your water bottle free of charge. The Council is a keen supporter of the scheme so do pop into the Council Office for your refill, together with Tiffins, The Bell, Caracoli, Courtyard Cafe, The Horse and Groom, Coffee #1, Heidis, The Arlebury Café & Bar and The Swan Hotel. If your shop or business would like to join the scheme, then please let us know and we can provide you with more information. Lighting up Alresford Each year Alresford PIGS

FEATURE
CHRISTMAS IN ALRESFORD It’s no accident that our lovely town looks so warm and Christmassy during the festive season. For many years a largely unseen workforce has erected real Christmas trees on businesses and homes in the centre of town and adorned them with old-style coloured bulbs to give that traditional yuletide glow. There is nothing more magical than walking or driving through the town on the first night that the Christmas trees are illuminated, making you feel that Christmas has arrived and underlining just what a special community Alresford is. It’s The Alresford Pigs Association in conjunction with the Alresford Chamber of Commerce that sells and erects the trees, keeping them looking wonderful by regularly changing old bulbs for new throughout December come rain or shine – or snow! In addition, ‘The Alresford Christmas Tree Fund’ which relies on donations, goodwill and generous sponsorship from Alresford Salads has successfully provided a landmark Christmas tree in Broad Street and orchestrated the arrival of Father Christmas, assisted each year by The Alresford Pigs who ensure that Santa arrives safely one preChristmas evening to deliver presents to local children. This year is no exception so you can look forward to twinkling lights aplenty from the end of November, with Father Christmas arriving in style on Wednesday December 11th. However, each year it gets harder and harder to maintain this tradition, with rising costs of materials and ever tightened Health and Safety legislation/insurance meaning that the ‘Tree Committee’ have to work to an ever tighter budget. We are extremely grateful to Alresford Salads for their continued support and this helps make sure we can all enjoy the tree. But if you are keen to see the ‘Giant Christmas Tree’ lighting up our town and Santa delivering presents every year, please donate on the night by contributing to our collection buckets and taking part in our terrific Tombola – which has an array of fantastic prizes! We've already mentioned the array of people and hours it takes to prepare, erect and maintain the trees in Alresford at Christmas. We
would like to specifically thank certain organisations and individuals whose help and expertise are perhaps the most crucial. This is often because they give up their time and skills which if we needed to pay for, would make the project very difficult to complete. In particular the Alresford Pigs Association would like to thank Peter Payne of M.D. Payne and Son (Payne Tree Stumps) for his help in the sourcing, collection and subsequent chipping of the Christmas Trees. Peter is a key contributor to making the project the success that it is. http://www.paynetreestumps.co.uk/
We would also like to sincerely thank the following people: Bill Biggs of Meardean Electrical Supplies Ltd for tirelessly sourcing the lighting strings and traditional coloured bulbs from an ever decreasing list of places, Dom Biggs for electical assistance, The Horse & Groom for all the coffee, The Naked Grape, Alresford Men's Shed, Richard Morgan of R. Morgan Garden & Landscaping Services, Andrew Thorne of Prospect Fencing Ltd, Dave Liddiard of Barnes & Liddiard Electrical Contractors, Piglets and friends of the Pigs, the people of the town for all the drinks, mince pies and good cheer on the day.... ...and the Traffic Warden for not giving us any tickets!
Local businesses will be keeping their doors open for late night shopping and refreshments on December 11th with timings as follows: 6.15pm Lead up to the Arrival of Father Christmas with community carol singing 7.00pm Father Christmas will arrive in the town 7.15- 8.30pm Children visit Santa in his grotto where presents will be handed out 6.00-9.00pm Late night shopping Please help us to keep this tradition alive in Alresford! The Alresford Pigs Association is a registered charity (charity no. 1163001). CITIZENS ADVICE WINCHESTER
Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, gives advice on reducing the cost of your energy bills during the winter months. I live with my two children and partner in a small semi-detached house. During the winter our heating and electricity bills shoot up. Do you have any tips on how I can keep the cost of my energy down during this period? There are a few things you can do to save some money during the winter months. Check when your energy contract is due to expire. If you're at the end of your contract use Energy Compare by Citizens Advice (energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk) to see if you could save money by switching supplier or tariff. If you're on a prepayment meter you could save money by replacing your meter with one that lets you pay after using energy rather than in advance. Most suppliers won’t charge you for removing a prepayment meter, though

Allen Gallery There are no talks in December. Gilbert White and Alton - In this anniversary year of his birth, (1720), local historian Jane Hurst talks about Gilbert’s Alton. Here's a few practical tips to help keep costs down: 1. Using a timer for your heating, lowering your thermostat and using radiator valve controls could save you over £100 per year 2. Changing light bulbs to an energy-efficient one could save £50 over the lifetime of the bulb. 3. Turn appliances off standby mode to save around £30 a year 4. Seal cracks in floors, skirting boards and add draft excluders to letterboxes, doors and windows. Some energy suppliers also offer grants to allow improvements to your home, like insulation or a new boiler. What help you can get depends on your circumstances and what would help your home. You don’t need to be a customer of one of these suppliers to apply but you’ll need to check your eligibility,Visit www. simpleenergyadvice.org.uk for more details. ‘THE BIG HOUSE’ – AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR LOCAL HERITAGE SINCE GEORGIAN TIMES Nearly 250 years on … Arlebury Park House in 2019 Perhaps surprisingly, there is little mention of the Arlebury estate in local histories, even though it exemplifies much of the huge social and economic change that took place from the 18th through to the 21st centuries. Arlebury (initially called ‘New Place’) has a good story to tell. Since Georgian times, this was ‘the Big House’ in Alresford. The Oxford English Dictionary defines this as ‘… the largest house in a village or area, typically inhabited by a family of high social standing’. This was certainly the case in the 18th century when it was built, and even in the 1920s Arlebury was still a private residence, noted as one of the ‘Principal Seats in Hampshire’, alongside Old Alresford House, Ropley Manor and others. So, ‘The Big House’ is about the wealthy, land-owning families at the Arlebury estate and how it was developed over nearly 250 years. It is also about the times they lived in, how they influenced the town of New Alresford and its surroundings, and how the changing wider world affected them in turn. To put it in perspective, the estate was begun before the French Revolution, had close links to the Crimean War, witnessed the American Civil War and survived the First and Second World Wars. It then only escaped the destructive fate of some fifty country houses in Hampshire alone, demolished when they were no longer tenable as the private residences of single families. Until the remaining estate was bought by Ernie Witchard and the house first divided into flats at the end of the Second World War, this was home to several wealthy families, the very stuff of Jane Austen’s novels. To a man – and for much of its history, women had few legal rights and once married, all property they brought into a marriage legally became their husband’s – the owners were hugely influential, holding public office as magistrates, Deputy Lord Lieutenants of Hampshire, Solicitors for the County of Southampton and more.
They generously supported St John the Baptist’s Church and were important patrons of local tradesmen and businesses of all sorts, and considerable employers of both indoor and outdoor staff. And, of course, once travel gradually improved in the 19th century, they owned property at the best addresses in London as well. For example, the Marx family, who bought and re-named the estate ‘Arle Bury’ in 1846, also owned property in Eaton Place, just round the corner from the town house inhabited by the fictional Bellamy family in the TV series ‘Upstairs Downstairs’. Henry Walford, bought Arlebury in 1883 as his country residence. In the early days of the estate, wealth had come from owning good land for farm produce and rent from tenant farmers. The size of the estate waxed and waned over the centuries; at one time, the founder, William Harris, owned most of the land in and around Alresford. A successor from 1814, John Rawlinson, also owned much land in Andover. But thereafter, things began to change; income from agriculture slumped, the industrial revolution continued apace and the service economy – banking and the law in particular - flourished. The Marxes mentioned above actually increased the size of the estate, buying land from the Baring family but were also city bankers so not wholly dependent on land. The Walfords were solicitors in Piccadilly. So, this book – including some fascinating stories sourced from the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester and talks with local people, many old maps and illustrations – covers nearly 250 years. An interesting Christmas read for anyone interested in our local heritage...? An Illustrated History of the Big House. WINCHESTER SUPPORTS CHRISTMAS TRADING WITH FREE SUNDAY PARK & RIDE Winchester is gearing up to support a bumper festive season in the city, including plans for a free Park & Ride service on Sundays. With a wealth of Christmas attractions on offer, Winchester City Council and Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) have set out measures to support the increase in visitors coming into the city. Over this busy period, people are being urged to use public transport where possible as a means of getting in and out of the city. A new, free seasonal Park & Ride service will be available on Sundays from 24 November to 22 December at three of the council’s four sites*. A free shuttle bus will run every 10 minutes from the East car parks and every 12 minutes from the South Winchester Park & Ride into the city centre from 9am to 6.30pm. Winchester City Council will also operate extra Christmas Park & Ride buses during the rest of the week from Wednesday 20 November until Christmas Eve. The additional services will run during extended hours from 6.30am to 8.30pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 8.30pm on Saturdays. In addition, real-time digital signage will be placed at three key routes into the city to provide updates on parking availability, helping those choosing to drive to navigate to available parking spaces. The signage will be located at Andover Road, Bar End Road and the roundabout next to King Alfred’s statue in central Winchester. Winchester BID has also worked hard to provide parking for businesses to free up spaces in the city by providing a park and stride initiative at Winchester City Football Club, as well as free weekend parking at Tower Street Car Park for BID members. To find out more visit https://winchesterbid. co.uk/christmas-parking-2019/ People visiting the city can also take advantage of Winchester BID’s parking app, which displays up-to-the-minute information on the car parks with available spaces. To find out more about travel into Winchester during the Christmas period, visit: https://www.winchester.gov.uk/parking/christmasparking To download Winchester BID’s App, search for ‘Park Winchester’ on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
WINCHESTER RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES INVITED TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE Winchester City Council has begun work on the Local Plan 2036 and anyone wishing to be involved in helping to shape the future of the district should register their interest now at https://www.winchester. gov.uk/no-listing/local-plan-enewsletter Everyone who signs up will be kept informed about the progress of the Local Plan 2036, future public consultations and other opportunities to share their views. A Local Plan 2036 consultation document will be launched early next year and this will include information about development that is needed across the district and identify the issues and challenges the district will face over the coming years, as well as recommendations for resolving them. The council will ask residents and businesses for their views on the document and these views will ultimately shape the Local Plan. Residents and businesses will be asked to consider the issues and challenges identified, potential locations for development of all types and how best to ensure the protection and enhancement of the environment and quality of life across the district. The Local Plan 2036 consultation document will be informed by a number of evidence studies due to be finalised this year, including an assessment of housing needs and population projections, together with a Strategic Housing Market Assessment, a report on retail, the town centre and leisure needs over the next 20 years, information on employment needs and an assessment on transport matters. These studies will provide a greater understanding of key issues before the Local Plan begins to evolve.

OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO GODOLPHIN’S GO PARENT: TALKING MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING CONFERENCE
Amy Forbes-Robertson
Sean Fletcher
On Wednesday 6 November, Godolphin hosted their first GO Parent conference, talking Mental Health and Wellbeing, in collaboration with the Magna Learning Partnership. Deputy Head Pastoral, Jenny Price, sought the expertise of professionals from the industry with real, up to date and pertinent messages on a wide range of subjects. The programme offered a formidable array of knowledge and some hard-hitting messages (for which we do not apologise), which were brilliantly delivered on the day by each of our nine speakers. Sean Fletcher launched the event with his deeply moving talk about his family’s struggles with his son’s OCD. Two Break Out Sessions followed from Hope Virgo, who spoke passionately of her personal battle with anorexia and Alistair Speers, (Headmaster of Sandroyd Prep School) who spoke about resilience and managing failure. The day continued with sessions on self-harm from Satveer Nijjar, online harms from Dr Claire Hardaker and Amy Forbes-Robertson from It-happens spoke about sex education. After an amazing lunch, Dr Linda Papadopoulos, a well-known and respected psychologist, spoke about nurturing young people’s wellbeing in the online world and this was followed by another Break Out Session which included a talk from Kevin West from the NSPCC and ‘inflating balloons of self-belief ’ which resulted in a standing ovation for James Shone. Deputy Head Pastoral, Jenny Price, said ‘the message was one of ‘let’s talk’ and bring these topics to the forefront with several of our speakers talking about their own journeys and recovery.’ We need the support of our parents and by inviting them to join us for a day dedicated to mental health, we can learn side by side, how to best support our young people. Head, Emma Hattersley, said “Our vision at Godolphin is to become a hub for promoting good mental health. Community is important to us and we were privileged to join with the Magna Learning Partnership for the day.” One parent commented “It was inspiring and indeed quite an emotional day…this generation of children are overburdened so any tips we can pick up along the way to inspire us and give us hope to help them are so appreciated.” The feedback from the day has been overwhelming and preparations for GO Parent 2020 are well underway.
TACKLING THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY AT THE HEART OF WINCHESTER CITY COUNCIL’S DRAFT FIVE YEAR PLAN
Tackling the climate emergency and providing excellent services are at the core of Winchester City Council’s draft five year plan for 2020 to 2025. The draft plan sets out Winchester City Council’s key ambitions and focuses on five priority outcomes which are: Tackling the climate emergency and creating a greener district • Homes for all • Vibrant local economy • Living well • Your services, your voice Over the next month the council is inviting residents, stakeholders and businesses to have their say about what matters to them. The draft plan recognises that the council will face some very significant challenges over the next five years including tackling the district’s carbon footprint, ensuring that resources are available to support an ageing population, responding to the potential impacts of Brexit on the economy along with maintaining high quality services, while balancing a council budget which will be reducing as Central Government grants diminish. The draft plan places the climate emergency as the overarching priority, focussing on the council becoming carbon neutral by 2024 and the wider district carbon neutral by 2030, along with reducing levels of waste and increasing recycling rates. It also puts health and wellbeing high on the agenda and aims to address health inequalities and improve participation rates for physical and cultural activities, underpinned by the opening of Winchester’s new Sport and Leisure Park in 2021. The proposed new plan also focuses on ensuring the Winchester district economy remains vibrant by finding increased opportunities for high quality, well paid employment across the district. The need to attract younger people to live and work in the district and to improve energy efficiency in homes as well as address homelessness is also highlighted. The plan goes on to set out ways in which the authority will be open and transparent, with better services for residents that are more accessible and usable. Cabinet Member for Built Environment and Wellbeing, Cllr Jackie Porter said: “The five priorities are underpinned by the need to look at everything we do in the context of our impact on the carbon footprint to create a greener district and providing excellent and easy to use services for everyone.
