PROMOTION

Happy Kitchens Happy Kitchens set to overcome this by slashing the price of their hand-made kitchens. They keep overheads to a minimum by avoiding the use of flashy showrooms and not charging hefty premiums for their brand. Ben tells us that this allows him to supply and fit a ÂŁ60,000 kitchen for well under half the price and still provide a perfect service.

Originally from Hayling Island in Hampshire, Ben did most of his growing up in Italy and has also spent a lot of time in Barcelona where he developed a keen eye for design. He now runs Happy Kitchens based in Swanmore, with offices in West Sussex and the Test Valley. He's had a successful career in kitchen design and has worked with some of the 'big names' in the UK kitchen industry. Happy Kitchens specialise in bespoke, high quality, made-to-measure kitchens and Ben wanted to offer top quality kitchens at the fraction of the cost, together with excellent customer service. He says: "There are a lot of customers who would use a high-street retailer to source their kitchen and find it difficult (if not impossible) to purchase the size and style they wanted to fit their space. The materials could also be low quality; for instance, rather than being real oak, it would be veneer." Ben is proud of the high quality 'British Made', hand-crafted kitchens they provide. He explains: "If someone wanted to buy a kitchen of our quality from the High Street it would be far too expensive. You will find in most cases that you are paying for the brand name, not the quality of the product."

4

Happy Kitchens ethos has always been to provide a complete kitchen solution for all its customers. Some customers may not have the financial resources to fit an entirely new kitchen that is why we offer a Kitchen Makeover service too. Over the years our expertise in this field has won us awards with Houzz. Careful attention is taken on the design to ensure our customers are left feeling that they have a brand new kitchen!

Before Makeover

After Makeover

Ben continues: "I think, our craftsmen are amongst the best in the world. They come from a luxury yacht fitting background. Fitting luxury yachts involves working to unusual layouts and specific customer requirements, whilst achieving a perfect finish. There is a world of difference between a craftsman and a kitchen fitter. A kitchen fitter can fit a kitchen, but as soon as there is a slight curve in the wall or something is not quite right with the room, problems begin. A craftsman can make something wonderful out of that situation, as opposed to being stopped by it." Quality, affordability and service are paramount to Ben, as shown by the fact that

his company won Best in Customer Service award for 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 from Houzz. His clients would describe Happy Kitchens as a company they can really work with, a company they get great quality from and a company with whom they get a great end result, without having to spend the earth. Dealing with Covid-19 Ben Says: "Our customers and our employees are of utmost importance to us and safety for all is our first concern. We are regularly reviewing and adhering to Government and NHS advice on how the virus can be managed and contained, and we have robust plans in place which we adapt to the latest Government advice as it changes and the situation continues to evolve. Our Coronavirus Planning is constantly examining how we can limit the impact of the virus within Restore and the service we are offering to our customers. We have put in place a series of steps and measures to keep our colleagues safe, and allowing us to continue to serve our customers. We are keeping our employees fully informed about steps to take for containment and management on our premises as well as during any customer or supplier site visits. We have implemented social distancing measures at all of our sited in line with Government guidelines. We have implemented increased hygiene measures at all of our sites and sourced relevant hygiene equipment and materials as recommended by Government guidelines. Any employee who is experiencing coronavirus symptoms, or is required to isolate under Government guidelines for any other reason, has been instructed not to attend work and to follow the latest Government advice on next steps. We are focused on working with our customers to establish these requirements. Please keep us updated on your requirements."

COMMUNITY YOUR

COMMUNITY season come back as no one is sure when or even if a new season can begin. Possibly post Christmas.

Alresford Rugby Football Club Well, it’s quite hard to know where to begin apart from to say all at ARFC hope you’re all well, safe and getting through this extraordinary time. Since March, when we last picked up a ball in anger, there hasn’t been much to say each month but now we can see a bit of light at the end of this dark tunnel. The 2019/20 season was abruptly ended mid March, which although was absolutely the right decision, saddened us because we missed playing our remaining fixtures and important social events. Much of our funding comes from Sponsors but also our commitment to The Watercress Festival and Alresford Show. More on sponsors later. The bright light is that under strict RFU guidelines we can gradually return to training, starting on Tuesday July 7th. This will be a very different pre

The minis hope to resume, again under guidance, on the 6th September. We also welcome a new, very experienced Head Coach Graham Arkley who is proving a very good fit into the club with players via zoom etc, really buying into his vision of taking our club forward. We also welcome our new physio David Ryan, who, because of circumstances can only help heal players by guidance and spiritual healing. We also our delighted to announce the emergence of an ARFC Ladies team for next season. More details can be found on our website. So if you need to get away from your partners on a Sunday, please come and join ladies. Another change is the resignation of our President Hugh Ogus who has decided to step down from a role he can be immensely proud of. Hugh is a life long supporter of the club and has done too much for me to mention here. Many thanks Hugh for all your hard work and dedication to ARFC over the years. On a less positive note, players, supporters and many others have commented on the amount of rubbish that is being left, not just on the pitches, how often and how many books you’d like. A member of staff will be in contact when you can collect your books from your local library’s entrance. Each of our libraries has careful social distancing measures in place to keep you and our staff safe. You’ll have around five weeks to read your books and return them to your library. When you drop your books back to us, we’ll make sure they are safe

We have players and others from within the club constantly trying to keep on top of this. ART / PROPERTY Artists In Isolation

The Country House Company - What do the next few months hold for the property market in Hampshire?

Alresford Art Society has suspended its activities for the duration of the pandemic, cancelling its members meetings and six classes a week until further notice. While the Covid-19 virus continues to shut down normal life, artists are in a better place to survive the lock down, indeed have even more time to be creative and experimental in their particular medium. “We have 165 members in the Art Society,” says Chairman Sue Gentry “and we have tasked members with sending in a picture of their painting or sculpture which is then circulated on a daily basis to everyone along with a few words about the painter. “This online gallery has been something of a relief to our members who are understandably disappointed that there will be no summer exhibition this year and a selection will be regularly posted on our Facebook page,” she said. “Being creative is a great way to relax and calm the mind and take you out of your everyday troubles and this has never been more so since we are now ‘confined to quarters’ for much of the day.” “Artists and celebrities are finding ever more ways to bring art into our inboxes and Philip Mould of BBC 1’s Fake or Fortune has posted short videos on Youtube on art and artists from his delightful home, while quirky potter Grayson Perry's series demonstrates how he works and encouraged people to make artwork on Channel 4,” says Sue. “Plus every major art gallery in the UK has opened its galleries up to the online community.” Alresford Art Society @alresfordartsociety

The exceptional levels of activity since restrictions have been lifted give a positive indication the next few months will continue to see a rise in transactions for both sales and lettings. The release of pent up demand has created a surge of activity in a market that has been passive for too long. The South of England provides the perfect environment for commuters and those looking for a change of lifestyle, our excellent road and rail links mean easy access to the capital and other cities with planes and boats making the continent as easily accessible. Many of us have had to adapt to working from home during lockdown and these local links will influence the demand in our area for the coming weeks and months. Whilst the housing market is clearly influenced by the wider economy, interest rates remain low and the instability of the stock markets is tempting investors back to the property market. This, combined with a change in choices, means that for now the market has confidence and will continue to be active. So, over the next few months at The Country House Company we will be doing our bit to safely #keepthecountrymoving. If we can help, we look forward to hearing from you.

What a Waste Back to Normal?

Normal life ground to a halt in March this year and the world we unlock may never be quite the same again. Amidst all the misery of the pandemic, one of few benefits has been the improvement in air quality and seeing nature in the ascendant in places where it has always been pushed to the sidelines. While the Earth has had a bit of a respite from our frenetic activities, it is has been suggested that we would need to keep making the same reduction in carbon emissions year on year to avoid the dire predictions for the end of the century. Lock down has given us all pause for thought and many have wondered aloud whether we can reinvent ourselves in a better way. On the question of rubbish (see March Forum) it may seem like one step forward, two back. There are good reasons for the proliferation of plastic at the moment, aside from PPE; food outlets are trying to keep going through takeaways (more plastic) and packaging is a secondary consideration when you are grateful for any goods you can get.

An Opportunity This is a good time to look at our own household waste, not least because the cost of collecting, processing / recycling it costs Hampshire County Council £100,000,000 a year (excluding the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth). Money that will not be easy to find as the economy struggles to recover. Food, most of which was edible when thrown away, comprises 35% of household waste. Apart from the 22 million tonnes of carbon tied up in the food we throw out each year, it costs average households between £60 -£70 a year. For inspiration on how not to waste food see www.lovefoodhatewaste.com or hants.gov. uk/smartliving

Recycling at its best Composting vegetable waste from the

10

kitchen has to be the best form of recycling, removing large amounts from the waste stream while producing a valuable resource for the garden. For all the facts see www. recyclenow.com/

Compost If composting isn’t for you, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still aim to remove your household’s vegetable refuse from the waste stream. A wormery might fit the bill, producing more modest amounts of compost but with less work and space required. Do you have a near neighbour with a compost bin who would be glad to recycle your vegetable scraps? If you are a keen composter, perhaps you are missing some nearby sources of raw material. Create a system that works for you and get networking!

Zero Waste? If you follow all the advice for not wasting food and compost your vegetable waste, what about the rest of your rubbish? You may find that your household waste and recycling bins are still surprisingly full and mostly with packaging. Zero waste is nearly impossible to achieve for most of us, but a good objective to work towards.

The 3 Rs

There are a lot of useful R words to help you look more critically at everything you purchase. Reduce, reuse and recycle are good for starters, then you could add repair and refuse. Recycling may be better than throwing away, but still costs money and energy, so maybe ‘reduce’ applies here. Glass, tins, paper and plastic bottles can be recycled in Hampshire but not other kinds of plastic, even if they are technically recyclable. You could ask your local retailers (butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, bakers), who deserve to be supported after the sterling job they have done during lock down, if you can take your own reusable containers to help reduce single use plastics and packaging. Some packaging actually helps to reduce food waste, as in the case of shrink wrap cucumbers, but a lot is expendable and if we keep demanding, retailers will undoubtedly respond to the request for less unnecessary plastic. There are now plenty of more sustainable packaging alternatives for many toiletries and cleaning products. The plastic free journey is not totally straightforward however and the alternatives need to be carefully thought through. Glass containers are heavier to transport than plastic, so in some cases, perhaps the ‘reduce’ or ‘refuse’ words apply. Soap can replace shower gel in plastic bottles but you may wish to avoid unsustainable palm oil (which comes under many names), so labels will need to be studied. Before throwing away items which cannot be recycled, consider if they could be repaired or reused. This will keep them out of the waste stream for a bit longer, but where will they end up eventually? Something to bear in mind when indulging in retail therapy. Perhaps we could all just do with a bit less ‘stuff’ or at least make sure that what we buy is sustainable.  Written by Cathy Swan

Fungi & Disease So, your lawn was looking lovely. You admired it only a few days ago. Freshly mowed, lovely and green. What more could you want? Suddenly you notice something’s not quite right. The grass is changing colour… in a day or two and things look considerably worse – now you’re getting worried! Let’s take a look at fungal attacks, what causes them, what can be done when they appear and how to prevent them. Mushrooms are magic!

Before we get started let’s get one thing straight; there are many toadstool type fungi you may see on your lawn. They look similar to the mushrooms you buy in the supermarket, in so far as they have a stem and a cap with fins and spores below the cap. These are the fruiting body of fungi living in the soil and they are generally an indication of good, healthy soil with lots of organic matter. They may be poisonous, so if they are bothering you and you want to remove them, be sure to wash your hands afterwards. Pathogens

Three things need to be present for a fungal attack to occur. The pathogen needs to be present; conditions need to be right to support the pathogen and there needs to be a host for the disease. Most of the pathogens that cause an outbreak will already be present in your lawn. When weather conditions support the proliferation of these pathogens their aim will be to multiply and colonise other areas. This is when that small area of concern that you initially noticed can become a real eyesore. Appearance

Knowing what you’re looking for is important. It’s easy to misidentify and become concerned unnecessarily. What’s more important however is knowing what you can do to prevent these often-devastating outbreaks – more on that later. Whilst most fungal attacks are unsightly, the good news is that they rarely kill the grass plant and mostly their impact is on the leaf and therefore on the appearance of your lawn. That being said, don’t underestimate the devastating effect they can have on the appearance of your lawn over a long period of time. Your lawn may look unsightly for the whole summer. Once the disease appears focus needs to be on aiding recovery and limiting it’s spread. Yes, we can apply a fungicidal treatment at this time but, on the whole, once you see it the damage has already been done and you won’t reverse that. The other thing to consider is that fungicides are not entirely your friend. They are indiscriminate and therefore also kill beneficial soil fungi, essential for a healthy lawn. We work hard to develop friendly fungi in the lawns because their benefit within the soil is magnificent. We don’t want to undo that with one unnecessary application for an outbreak that we could have prevented with the right preparation.

12

Treatment When we discover a fungal attack, our focus is on treating the grass not treating the fungi. As mentioned earlier, on the whole the grass will recover and our efforts are focussed on aiding that recover. We are the Florence Nightingale to your poorly lawn, but usually without a lamp. So rather than applying a fungicide which will have little positive impact we focus on boosting nutrition, re-growth and therefore recovery. Through the spray application of a specialised blend of macro and micro nutrients, liquid seaweed concentrate, carbohydrates and magnesium we aim to give your lawn a shot-in-the-arm and get it growing again so the greenery returns as quickly as possible Prevention We all know that prevention is far better than cure. We have considered what the outbreak looks like and what we can do once it happens. We have also identified what factors contribute to a fungal outbreak and we now know that some of these factors are outside of our control; the weather being a major contributor. So, what can be done to reduce the risks of a fungal attack thwarting your lawn bragging rights? 6 steps to lawn disease prevention • Firstly, think about the grass itself. Certain varieties are more susceptible than others. Some of the modern grasses have been bred specifically for their disease resistance and whilst more expensive they should always be selected when adding seed to an existing lawn. • Next comes your mowing regime. The right frequency and mow height with sharp blades is essential. Poor mowing weakens grass plants and weak plants are more susceptible to attack. • Then we have nutrition. Any living thing that is not receiving the right nutrition is more likely to become ill. The risk of the illness can be reduced through the right nutrition, as can the speed of recovery. Your lawn is no different. Occasional feeding is not enough. The right products, in the right quantity, at the right times is essential. • We then have environmental factors. Disease pathogens love thatch and mossy lawns. Reduce these conditions through regular scarification and aeration. The latter aids stronger root development and with this come greater access to nutrition and water. • That brings us nicely on to watering. Drought causes stress -stressed plants are more likely to be affected by fungal outbreak. Watering is important - correct watering is essential. Often fungi like warm wet conditions. Try to prevent these conditions by watering in a morning so the sun dries the grass leaf quickly and it doesn’t stay wet all night. • Finally, as lawn care professionals we monitor conditions through national turf-care reporting systems which enable us to predict when an outbreak might occur. We know which of our clients have lawns that are more susceptible to fungal disease and we are then able to notify them in advance and recommends preventative treatments where they are most needed. South Downs National Park introduces inspiring scheme to connect families with nature John Muir Trust to run the prestigious internationally-recognised environmental award, which is focused on connecting with and caring for wild places. The activities programme is fully adaptable for each family’s circumstances, whether they are shielding vulnerable family members, have access to green space or not, or going to work or school. All people have to do over the next few months is 25 hours or more of fun activities which help them discover, explore and do something to care for a wild place, and then share the experience with others. Those who sign up will be sent regular ‘ideas’ newsletters that will be full to the brim with activities to choose from.

Example activities include:

An exciting new initiative has launched to help connect families with the joys of nature through fun learning activities. Inspired by the “founding father” of the National Park movement, John Muir, the South Downs National Park is announcing a new scheme that will help families learn more about the amazing natural environment. Whether at home, in the local park, or in the area of the National Park near where they live, families will be able to do a range of nature-based activities and work their way towards a Family John Muir Award. The South Downs National Park Authority has teamed up with conservation charity

• Building a “bug” hotel in your garden. • Growing something you can eat on your windowsill at home. • Watching a wildlife video about the National Park. • Going for a walk in the local park and surveying birds and other wildlife seen en-route. • Nature-based craft activities such as making a wild snake bookmark. • Finding how many different shaped leaves there are in your local green space. • Sharing your discoveries with others by text, film, over the phone, or through social media. Siân Jones, Families Outreach Officer for the South Downs National Park, said: “We’re really pleased to be launching this new initiative which will inspire people of all ages to connect with nature and take a more active role in caring for it. “Along the way families will also discover more about the legendary John Muir and explore the wonders of the South Downs National Park – whether that be immersing

themselves in its natural splendour or from the comfort of their homes. The beauty of this awards programme is its flexibility. So your wild place might be a window box, your garden, the tree outside your window, the plants that grow through the cracks in the paving stones, or the park around the corner. PROFESSIONAL

A new Business in Alresford My name is Michael Daniels, I have recently opened up offices in Alresford offering Independent Financial Advice & wanted to introduce myself. I have lived in Lower Wield for nearly 10 years now & volunteer for Wield Cricket Club, acting as the head coach for the Juniors. All my children are now too old to play for Wield but I have continued the role to ensure village cricket continues (sadly not this year). My wife Julie & I love Alresford & our three children go to Perins with our eldest just ‘finishing’ his GCSE’s in lockdown; strange times we find ourselves in! After finishing University in Manchester, a long time ago now & before the days of the internet/mobile phones, I took a role with Pearl Assurance with a fast track to become an area manager (the title is much grander

16

than the job!) I enjoyed the role immensely but quickly realised that the products I could offer were limited to what the firm had. It was clear to me that each client’s situation was different & having a limited offering was not always best. My only option was to qualify & train to be an Independent Financial Advisor which I’ve been doing now for nearly 20 years. Alresford Financial is directly authorised & regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, I am a member of the Equity Release Council & The Society of Will Writers. I am lucky enough to have a number of great clients in Alresford who have been incredibly supportive & suggested I open offices, which I now have on The Top Floor, 3 East Street. My firm takes a holistic approach, Initial consultations are free

& I don’t charge a fee for mortgages. I am complimented (I think) for being frank and straight to the point, I try not to use jargon or over complicate things, which I hope is reflected by my clients reviews on Google. Referral: “Couldn’t recommend Michael enough, he has been fantastic at helping us professionally growing our business with excellent financial advice and also with all aspects personally. He will make an excellent business asset to Alresford and would highly recommend him to anyone in need of any financial advice. Lucky to have him now in our lovely town.” Good luck ! - Nic & Nell Joly

Protecting your “financial situation

may seem more vital than ever

Safeguarding your finances

There is plenty that is uncertain right now – our lives are being dramatically affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with the majority of us confined to our homes during lockdown. If you have time on your hands, you may find some peace of mind from using this to start thinking about how to secure your financial well-being. Here are some considerations.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall and you may get back less than you invested. Tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in the future. Neither simulated nor actual past performance are reliable indicators of future performance. Performance is quoted before charges which will reduce illustrated performance.

1. Think about long-term goals Interest rates on cash savings are in the doldrums, with the Bank of England recently cutting the base rate to just 0.1%. Meanwhile, the stock market is volatile. Yet dips in the market can present buying opportunities if you are focused on long-term goals. History shows that, over the long term, shares have historically risen and outperformed cash. The graph below shows the comparative returns from cash, bonds and global equities. 600 500 400 300 200 100

2. Make or update your will Ensuring you have an up-to-date will means your estate will most likely go to who you want, and that your wishes are carried out after your death. If you already have a will you may need to amend this if there have been any substantial changes to your situation – such as getting married or having children. You might also want to seek guidance on making mirror wills, leaving your estate to your spouse in the event of your death, or other forms of estate planning.

3. Plan for future generations You can save tax-efficiently to help secure your children’s or grandchildren’s financial future. With a Junior ISA, you can put aside up to £9,000 in the 2020/21 tax year – compared to the previous limit of £4,368 – with money locked up until the child reaches 18. People with no earnings – including children – can also receive 20% tax relief on pension contributions of up to £2,880 per year, boosting the value to £3,600.

4. Review your protection Protecting your financial situation may seem more vital than ever. But it can be tricky putting the right combination of insurance policies together. You might want to consider professional advice to ensure you have the most suitable level and cover for you from, for example, income protection, life assurance, and critical illness cover.

5. Draw up a retirement plan It is useful to step back and consider the life you want to live in retirement. You can then build a financial plan around this when you’ve got time on your hands. A financial planner can help you clarify your goals, and develop and manage a tailor-made retirement plan, whatever your stage of life. This plan can stress test how different growth rates, inflation, or other economic events, for example, might impact on your goals. Most importantly, remember to focus on a long-term investment horizon.

COMMUNITY / PROFESSIONAL Celebrating the Candover Valley Store’s first Birthday

Candover Valley residents have been celebrating the first birthday of their communityrun store and post office with cake and gifts for customers. Opened by Lord Sainsbury last June, the store has been a great success from the start, providing local people and visitors with a wide range of day to day groceries, fresh and chilled foods, gift items, wines and spirits, a coffee area and social hub (in more normal times) and of course post office services. Since the March coronavirus lockdown, the store has been an even more vital resource, with many relying on it as their primary source of staples such as bread, milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables as well as for newspapers and other daily necessities. Even revised sales expectations have been exceeded during this period, as more of the community use the store more frequently. Keeping the fridges filled and the shelves stocked has taken a Herculean effort by manager Garry Green, his assistant Emma Simpson and the store’s cheerful team of volunteers. Said Garry: “Demand is so high that it is challenging to source supplies and to get items back on the shelves quickly enough. As fast as we put stock out, customers buy it, which is why we’re here of course! There’s a great community spirit and we have had a lot of lovely compliments. It‘s proof that there has never been a better time for a local community store.” To meet government guidelines,

20

the store has been operating a social distancing policy, employing extra hygiene measures and has limited the number of customers allowed in the store at any one time. The decked area outside which was so popular as a fine weather meeting place for refreshments, is currently closed, although hot drinks are still available to take away and many people are chatting as they queue outside, two metres apart. Regular customer, store supplier and owner of valleybased Moonroast coffee, Judy Bradshaw, said: “We would have really struggled as a community without our fabulous shop. It has been a life-saver for many of us, even managing to stock flour when it was impossible to find any elsewhere! Our own business has suddenly become much more reliant on posting coffee to customers and we are thankful to have the convenience of the post office, just up the road from the roastery.” In the store’s first year of trading, new initiatives such as the in-store bakery oven and panini toasters have successfully been introduced, along with the sale of newspapers and some magazines, and a small range of refillable, environmentallyfriendly cleaning products. The management committee continues to strive to respond to customer needs and the store’s offering will evolve further in future. The support of the many people and organisations that have contributed to the setting up and ongoing success of the Candover Valley Store is much appreciated. Thank you to you all and if you have yet to visit, be sure a friendly welcome awaits. More information is available on our website: www.cvcs.org.uk

Covid-19 and The Price of Carats

as investors seek a safe haven in times of economic turmoil. The diamond market conversely has been hit hard as prices have fallen.

The Covid-19 crisis has forced us all to adapt to a ‘new normal’. In a few short months the world has been knocked sideways by the spread of this virus and it’s seismic ripples have left few untouched. Lockdowns have been used worldwide to suppress the spread of the virus and in doing so economic activity has been massively disrupted. In the jewellery trade the price of gold has risen to highpoints not seen for 11 years

22

For 90 years De Beers controlled 90% of the World’s diamond production and by carefully controlling supply it could maintain price levels. This changed in the early 1990s as the Soviet Union collapsed, Rio Tinto the owner of the world’s largest diamond mine at Argyle in Western Australia decided it wanted ‘out’ of the cartel and Canadian production came on stream. Once the free market genie was out of the bottle De Beers were simply unable to control the market as they used to. Now De Beers controls approximately 35% of the world’s supply and free market economics has a much greater influence on prices. In March De Beers reported a 28% drop in sales and as lockdowns worldwide brought an end to international travel it was forced to cancel one of its key sales (or ‘sights’) to its group of preferred buyers. In Russia diamond mining company Alrosa published results showing that revenues were down 10% and sales volumes were down by 11%. Elsewhere the lockdown began to bite as mining operations were interrupted in Canada, Zimbabwe, India and South Africa.

London listed Petra Diamonds has seen its share price plunge 75% since January. As supply tightened, demand fell off a cliff. As countries have been locked down retail shops have suspended activities; none more so than in China where consumers there represent15% of the global market. The weakening of influential Far Eastern markets coupled with the need for wholesale dealers to offload large stocks at a discount in order to pay staff and stay afloat caused prices to soften. In New York the influential Rapaport Price Index published price drops of between 7-10% causing consternation amongst diamond sellers. The index publishes ‘high cash prices’ paid for diamonds and is seen by many to be the pricing yardstick by which others are judged. For diamonds that have been cut and are offered for sale to the trade it is usual for prices of these stones to be discounted by some degree. These discounts known as the ‘Rapp Discount’ can typically vary over a broad range – lately that range has got broader still and just recently we were being offered square emerald shaped diamonds (Asscher cut) weighing 1.01ct, E colour, VS2 clarity with a ‘Rapp discount’ of 55%. Fast forward to the post Covid-19 world and we see diamond prices that in the

RETAIL diamond? Absolutely nothing at all. They are both chemically identical and share the same physical characteristics. Your jeweller will not be able to tell the difference between a natural mined diamond and laboratory grown diamond just by looking at it and neither will you. Expensive analytical equipment that determines a diamond’s composition is the only way of telling the difference. If a diamond is synthetic then it’s origin must be disclosed. • Synthetic diamonds are much cheaper than natural stones. For example a natural diamond graded as D colour (the best), VVS2 clarity, weighing 0.51ct may be priced at £1780. Its certificated synthetic equivalent will be 1/3 of the price.

main have fallen between 15-20% since the beginning of March. What does this mean? Right now it means that the diamond stock in jewellers’ windows is currently overpriced and many will be forced to discount their prices accordingly. If you are in the market for a diamond – say for an engagement ring, an important anniversary or a birthday then now is the time to buy. How should you do this? To learn about diamonds and to see what is available the internet is a great way to start but, as in everything in life, to really capitalize you must seek the advice of an expert – someone who really knows their stuff.

Here are some tips: • Don’t buy on just the certificate only – it does not tell the whole story of a diamond and to really buy well you need the advice of an expert to lead you through the grading disparity minefield. Remember, a diamond cutter’s job is not to make the rough stone in front of them look beautiful, it is to follow precise instructions to make the most profitable stone. The two things are not the same. • See before you buy. The online operators won’t send diamonds for you to look at before taking the plunge – wouldn’t you want to see what you’re getting before you part with your cash? • What about synthetics – what’s the difference between a synthetic manmade diamond and a natural mined

Now do you see why dealing with an expert makes sense? Why would you press an ‘add to cart button’ for something potentially costing thousands when you haven’t even seen what you’re paying for first? Our online diamond store allows you to research and view over 200,000 diamonds currently being offered for sale by the UK’s most respected dealers with ‘real time pricing’ and in your own time at home. We have a special educational section so that you can learn the important fundamentals of diamonds before you start. From there you can view and compare diamonds that match your criteira, and you can view the certificates; you can create and cost your own ring by choosing from a range of top quality UK made mounts.

from specialists who understand the market and really know not only their onions but their carats as well.

N F I N E ART AU C T I O N E E R S & VA LU E R S

A Welcome Return

Andrew Smith & Son Auctioneers are delighted to have re-opened their doors to the public after such a long break.

Silver, jewellery and Asian art was also on offer, including a decorative oversized Chinese famille rose vase.

For future sales the saleroom will look and feel a little different to its regular visitors. In accordance with Government guidelines, strict social distancing measures will be in place, and viewing of the auction will be by appointment only.

The Itchen Stoke based auctioneers and valuers were busy making the saleroom safe for their staff and public in preparation for their long-awaited auction which took place on 24th and 25th June. The auctioneers would like to thank all their vendors for their patience and understanding over the long delay in holding this sale, which was originally scheduled for March. Notable highlights of the sale were a first edition book of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Only five hundred of these books exist. Some were given to libraries where they were well-used, and although this example from a private individual is inscribed within, the condition is good hence the estimate of £20-30,000.

An Air Force Cross group of four medals to Flight Lieutenant R A Harvey commanded interest at £1000-1500, and a pair of 1830 box pattern Victorian officers epaulettes to a VC recipient, still within their original japanned case did well at £500-800. Pictures, ceramics and glass, furniture, textiles and costume, rugs and collectables were all on offer.

An extremely large Chinese vase, Qing period - Measuring 69.5 cm high Estimate £1,000 – 1,500

‘Mouseman’ furniture is ever popular and there were five lots offered including a golden oak dresser and sideboard, each estimated at £2500-3000.

Visitors to the saleroom are encouraged to wear face coverings and gloves, and there will be hand-sanitising stations around the saleroom. In order to minimise risk the auctioneers will not be publishing a catalogue for the first time in their history, and they suggest that clients print their own at home, from the catalogues available online. Unfortunately, the café and toilets will also be closed. The saleroom will be closed to the public on sale days but the auctioneers are offering various ways to bid. Telephone bidding and commission bidding will be offered, and there is the opportunity to bid live via one of three global internet auction platforms. Probate, Insurance and sale valuations are still being undertaken and sociallydistanced appointments can be arranged by calling the office on 01962 735988.

A large colourful collection of American postcards dating from 1931-55 was sure to attract interest from around the globe.

A Robert Thompson ‘Mouseman’ Oak dresser Estimate £2,500 – 3,000

She is a registered Independent Nurse Prescriber, so she is able to prescribe any medication that is required and can order any necessary investigations including bloods and x-rays, and make referrals to specialities and community teams as appropriate. The aim of changing the service is to improve the patient’s journey by increasing access to urgent on-the-day appointment.

New GP Partner We are delighted to announce that Dr. Marie Dodd has joined us as a Partner from 12th May. Marie originally completed her GP training with us in 2014/2015 & then joined us as a salaried GP in August 2017.

Dr. Amy Chandler Amy has returned from maternity leave to continue completing her GP trainee programme, on successful completion of this she will be joining us as a permanent GP from September this year.

Appointments At the start of the COVID-19 crisis GP practices were advised that all appointments should be conducted via telephone in the first instance. We implemented this change to our system very quickly and we have found that many problems can effectively be dealt with in a telephone assessment and a face to face appointment is not needed. However, if a patient does need to be seen for a face to face appointment we are confident that this is being done safely. We are developing our use of technology wherever possible, including text messaging, video calls and photography. Looking ahead, the guidance we are now receiving is that we should plan to maintain a telephone based service for some time. We are planning how we can build on our experience so far and provide a responsive service not only to those who are acutely unwell but also to patients who have long term conditions as well as contraceptive services, new baby checks, cervical screening and other health reviews. With this in mind we will not be offering pre-bookable appointments but will continue to offer a ‘same-day’ service for

So, to summarise….If you have a problem with your health please call us. We’ll give you a call back first and take it from there!

GOVERNMENT Steve Brine M.P Readers of FORUM will be aware I was able to secure significant new investment for our local health Trust (HHFT) as part of the Health Infrastructure Plan. As previously reported, HHFT has now received confirmation of guidelines - and some £5m in initial seed funding – to bring together its plans and a team to build safe and sustainable services in Winchester and across mid/North Hampshire for the long-term. “Hampshire Together” has now been launched to start a conversation about this project which will include our whole local NHS – from GPs to mental health services, community care to acute hospital provision; as well as social care and the wider voluntary sector. The aim is stated to

Jackie's County Corner As we walk into July, I’d like to start a debate about wildflowers, and cutting of verges. I’m sure you’ll agree there is more than one side to this: access, wildlife, animal & human health are all considerations, and I’d like to take this debate out to all of you. If we cut verges, this inevitably reduces the diversity of the plant life and bug life within them. But if we allow them to grow uncut, then it’s difficult to walk on them, and saplings grow undeterred by a mower. Trees then quickly develop; footways and verges become unwalkable and vehicles may be damaged as branches overhang the roads, their detritus blocks drains. The A roads are vivid examples of this: the A33 footway becomes obliterated by weeds even a few weeks after clearance. The A31 is rife with ragwort, which worries farmers and delights butterfly conservationists. As your councillor, I am asked to get foliage cut back or to save it from the mower or hedge trimmer in equal measure. So, what do you think?

and see more than a decade of my work at www.stevebrine.com/prioritynhs

This is clearly an ambitious exercise but it’s welcome if it is a genuine attempt to listen to my constituents on future health services. I had to work extremely hard last year to secure our place in the Health Infrastructure Plan and I’ve had confirmation from ministers that no matter the final formulation of the plans, the Royal Hampshire County Hospital will receive significant investment. The Trust know well my red lines (they haven’t changed) around consultant led obstetric care – and an emergency department worthy of the name - in Winchester and I am very sure local people back me 100% in this view. Now is the time to speak up and make sure your voice is heard from the very start noting the clear message from the Trust that “at this stage no decisions have been taken and no options generated”.

Also this month, my latest Annual Report is now published and you should have that through but you can find it on my website. I am also conducting a major survey among constituents to mark ten years as our MP; complete it at www.stevebrine.com/surveys

I am regularly in the RHCH – meeting with senior managers, staff and patients – and will be reminding them the era of moving all activity into fewer larger hospitals is over. In the words of Secretary of State Matt Hancock “I want more services closer to the communities they serve.” You can find a link to Hampshire Together,

Rural footpaths are generally edged with wildflowers. Even nettles support butterflies and other fauna! We are members of the animal kingdom too: if we want homo sapiens to remain healthy, we need to walk and exercise too, so cutting back nettles is an especially common request from walkers with children.

Meanwhile, please continue to take care of yourself, and family, and stay alert to the risks of coronavirus in our community. I have had several cases of Lyme’s disease reported to me in my time as a councillor, caught from ticks as people walk on a verge or alongside long grass adjoining a tarmac footway. Recovery can take months or even years. My own daughter caught Lyme’s disease last year and it took months of recovery, some people take years. It is not something to take lightly. So, what should we do? Cut or keep? I’d like to know what you think. There’s a lot of other work progressing in this County division despite the Covid crisis: • The Candover Water Augmentation scheme to combat drought: an alternative plan has been suggested to use the natural water courses to deliver the scheme.

Finally, it is hoped we can continue to move from crisis to recovery as the Covid-19 pandemic enters a new phase and we remember those we have lost. There will be many difficult days ahead – and possibly even local action to tackle spikes in infection - but I stand by my view at the outset that social distanced or otherwise we are all going to have to live with an element of risk in our lives or the medicine really will be worse than the disease. Alresford Chamber of Commerce News - Alresford is re-opening! Businesses have excelled during the Covid 19 crisis. A number of businesses were able to excel during those difficult two months.

Winchester Councillor Margot Power

Increase in Fly Tipping There has been a noticeable and regrettable increase in fly tipping since lock down started. The closing of waste re-cycling centres has no doubt added to the problem. The majority of law-abiding citizens have had to store waste and resist the temptation to drop garden waste into distant hedgerows.

It is easy to go on line and report fly tipping on the WCC website and there is a very useful app available which can be downloaded https://www.winchester.gov. uk/waste-recycling/flytipping This allows the location of dumped materials to be easily recorded and passed to the council. Describing accurately a

Others had to painfully adjust to lock down, follow instructions and sit it out. We hope these can return once they are able, to welcome their valued customers once again. Earlier this month a number were already busy implementing new distance measures.

There will be a reduced our annual membership fee for 2020 -2021. The Alresford Chamber of Commerce AGM has been postponed until restrictions enable the meeting to be held.

location in a remote country lane is not particularly easy. If WCC is already aware of the dumped waste, there should be a sprayed yellow ‘W’. Leave the material as you find it, not only can there be toxic items dumped, but also there is frequently various types of evidence that allow the culprits to be successfully prosecuted. (Please note: Waste Recycling Centres have now re-opened although with a restricted service and with the requirement to arrange a pre-booked time, but only for car owners and if you have an email address. This seems rather unjust on pedestrians, who can only drop off a fraction of what might be fitted in a car, and will be travelling there by the greenest possible means. We are addressing this unfairness at HCC. The booking service is going live as from Thursday 11thJune.) Re-opening Alresford There is some Government (tax-payers’) money, is to be made available to help towns re-open. A number of proposals have been put forward to HCC for consideration. There is a feeling that pedestrian movement and cycling should be encouraged. One way of doing this is to introduce lower speed limits through the town. Another proposal

is to put more cycle stands into Broad Street and incidentally to tidy up the very scruffy gravel upstand areas. In order to allow temporarily, cafes and restaurants external seating areas that meet current Government spacing standards, to be located in the service roads in Broad Street.

Tree planting As part of the Climate Emergency declared last year WCC has managed to plant more than 500 new trees. New Alresford Town Council also has a programme of tree planting on the land that it owns. Last year, eleven trees were planted in Arlebury Park.

It is hoped in the spring of 2021 to add to this number and to extend the tree planting to Stratton Bates and to the Sun Hill grounds. Only indigenous trees appropriate to the site have been planted in Arlebury Park.

Winchester City Council cuts carbon emissions by a fifth as part of ambitious Climate Emergency plans Winchester City Council has reduced its carbon emissions by almost a fifth by switching to a green energy supply, as part of its ambitious plans to tackle climate change.

to feed back energy into the grid if excess power is generated. Ahead of World Environment Day, the council has also announced it will work with five Parish Councils to join up to the ‘Greening Campaign’ – this will help local communities to identify ways that residents can come together to cut carbon emissions at a grassroots level. The areas will help to test ideas that could then be introduced across the district.

One year on from declaring a Climate Emergency, the council has provided an update on progress towards its goal to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2024 – and a carbon neutral district by 2030. This follows the council issuing a comprehensive action plan in December last year to meet these ambitious targets.

Additional work to deliver a carbon neutral district by 2030 includes developing a new Local Plan to guide low carbon development over the next decade and beyond, and progressing the Movement Strategy in partnership with Hampshire County Council to provide low carbon travel options.

Achievements include switching the energy supply of the civic buildings to a green tariff in April – a year earlier than initially planned - which will going forward reduce the council’s carbon emissions by almost a fifth (19 per cent) annually – equating to a reduction of around 770 tonnes of CO2e saved.

Cabinet Lead, Cllr Paula Ferguson, said: “When we declared a Climate Emergency a year ago, we meant it and I’m proud of the work we’ve done to reduce the council’s carbon emissions and those of the district during the last year.

Plans to further cut building emissions across the district include promoting the use of renewable energy. The latest example is installing top of the range solar panels on the Winchester Sport & Leisure Centre – part of a package of measures that will make the building one of the greenest of its kind in the UK. The panels on the new leisure building will include 849 square meters of photovoltaic panels that can generate at least 140,000 kilowatts of green energy a year. The system is also able

38

“We’ve recently cut the council’s carbon emissions by nearly a fifth by switching to renewable energy for all council property, committed to spending £10m over the next decade to retrofit our housing stock to make it more energy and water efficient, started work on a new ‘Park and Stride’ at Bar End, agreed a network of electric vehicle charging points across the district, and planted over 500 trees. “Supporting local people through the COVID-19 outbreak has had to be our primary focus recently, but it also presents

great opportunities to recover in a low carbon way. One way we are doing this is working with Hampshire County Council to accelerate the delivery of sociallydistanced walking and cycling options, and we want to support businesses to recover in a more sustainable way such as increasing the use of technology. “Tackling COVID-19 challenges continues to be our immediate focus, but the climate emergency remains a critical priority. We’ve made good progress over the last 12 months, setting ambitious targets on carbon reduction and taking action to make this happen. We can all help on this journey to improve our quality of life now, and for future generations. The positive changes to how we live our lives made recently prove what can be achieved and we're keen to drive forward ways to get more people from across the district involved in our ambitious carbon reduction work over the coming months.”

Carbon reduction programme highlights includes:

• A comprehensive Carbon Neutrality Reduction Plan – https://www. winchester.gov.uk/climate-change-and energy/climate-emergency-what-we are-doing-now/carbon-neutrality action-plan • Green electricity supplied for city council’s operational buildings • A plan to install 32 electric charge points across the district including ‘fast’ chargers • Park & Ride expansion at east Winchester Bar End later this year • Solar panels installed at Winchester Sport and Leisure Centre and at the city council’s depot in Winnall • 500+ trees planted in 2019-20 including community planting events • Developing a Biodiversity Action Plan including the creation of new wildflower areas • A Climate Emergency conference planned for later this year – to mobilise people together across the district including a Schools Climate Parliament to engage young people • Introduction of a new household glass recycling service from September 2019 • Changes to parking and access to our towns and villages to improve air quality

We have been busy during lock down keeping up with our on-going projects but also using the time to source new and unique items for our shop and our new online shop for those that are not yet willing or able to travel. We have lots of lovely things, for all price ranges, so well worth a look. Simply go on to our website www. interiorstyle.biz and have a browse. We officially re-opened the shop after lockdown on the 1st of June and as a thank you to our existing customers and as an incentive for new customers we are offering a 20% discount across all our fabric ranges running through July in the hope of being able to offer a small amount

of financial assistance through these crazy times and also to provide much needed work to our very gifted seamstresses. As we have all been in lockdown we think everyone has had chance to take stock of their surroundings and may have seen that there are little tweaks that can be made to enhance that room that you have got so used to over time. With lockdown easing it is a good time to be able to indulge and do something nice for your home and we hope that by offering this incentive it will help with the financial side of things as well.

We encourage you to come in and see us and browse through the books while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. We want all our customers to enjoy the experience of a visit to Interior Style. Following Government guidelines and to ensure the safety of our customers and the Alresford Community we are strictly observing the guidelines of 2 metres social distancing, hand sanitisers are readily available in all zones and fresh gloves are to be used when looking through the books. If you would like to make an appointment to specifically discuss a project or to spend some time looking through our extensive library please give us a call or if you simply would like to pop in and have a browse in the shop please pop in – you will be assured of a warm welcome. You can contact either Helen or Andi on 01962 736311.

COMMUNITY

Alresford Town Council Reports For the past few months, we have been living in extraordinary times which have required an extraordinary response. Supporting our community Once the implications of the pandemic became clear, we reacted quickly to set up a New Alresford Non-Medical Support Network with help from PIGS, Churches Together and Rotary. It consists of a tiered system including street coordinators and volunteers. Over 180 residents volunteered, answering telephone calls, collecting prescriptions and shopping in the main for those unable to, in the community. Their dedication to the community is humbling and inspiring. It is a great success, so a massive thank you to everyone for volunteering. If you have any feedback, please contact us. We have awarded grants of £500 each to Citizen’s Advice, Town Trust COVID-19 Hardship Fund and Winchester Basics Bank. These organisations are here to help residents. More information on support for residents and businesses can be found on our website. Breath of fresh air Open spaces close to home have never been so important. We are extremely lucky in Alresford to have beautiful countryside and riverside walks on our doorstep; together with our parks and Memorial Gardens which have

42

remained open throughout. Decisions taken some time ago to encourage greater biodiversity are beginning to bear fruit. Areas of grassland in the parks have been left to grow. In Arlebury Park, the wildflower turf has burst into life and the new hedge and trees are bedding into their new landscape. The footpath in Arlebury Park has been extended up to the pedestrian gate to the rugby pitches. Emergency services now have access. Our thanks to Scott Cleeve for this work and for watering the new trees; vital during the dry spell. Plans for renewing the play area in Stratton Bates are temporarily on hold. The public consultation had to be postponed due to the pandemic, but we look forward to sharing our plans with you and hearing your views in due course. Virtual meetings Like many other organisations we have had to be innovative to adapt to the unique circumstances we find ourselves in, including holding the first ever virtual Annual Meeting of the Council on 26th May 2020. Councillor Marilyn Weston was elected as Chair and Ann Bean as Vice Chair.

Like many other organisations we have had to be innovative to adapt to the unique circumstances we find ourselves in, including holding the first ever virtual Annual Meeting of the Council on 26th May 2020. Councillor Marilyn Weston was elected as Chair and Ann Bean as Vice Chair. Following recent legislation, all council meetings will now be conducted remotely via Zoom. As members of the public, you are still welcome to participate. If you would like to submit a comment or access the meeting, then please contact the committee clerk. Details can be found on the agenda on our website. If you do not have access to the internet, then you can phone in or send a comment. Floral displays The hanging baskets and troughs are in full bloom, just in time to welcome shoppers back to our town. This year we have added troughs which enhance the vibrant floral displays. We continue to fund the watering and maintenance. Our thanks to everyone who purchased a hanging basket and to the Hanging Garden who anticipate watering on a twice weekly basis.

Safe shopping With Lockdown easing, local shops have been working hard to ensure they comply with social distancing and hygiene requirements. We have been looking at ways to ensure an enjoyable but safe shopping and visitor experience. We have been working closely with the local authorities to implement these changes in a short space of time. River path repairs From the 6th of July until 4th September, a section of the river path near to the Eel House will be closed so the board walk can be repaired. Not New Now and Not Normal

© Lucia Foster-Found 2020 www.luciafosterfound.com

She felt something of a failure. Not for her a daily Joe Wicks workout. Nor had she learned a new language, written a novel or redecorated her house. Not one single cute video of her dancing with her husband or dogs was going viral on Tik Tok. The novelty of Zoom meetings had worn off after a week or two, along with workmates’ initial relief and curiosity that everyone was well. It seemed she’d done more virtual gatherings in the first fortnight than she had in the following ten. Houseparty was fun for a while, but her habitual family video calls had slipped back as before into Whatsapp and Messenger. Almost as if nothing had changed. And maybe that was why. The stars had shone more brightly, the sky was chem-trail free. The poor, abused planet was having a short respite – on her daily walk she’d watched a deer wander fearlessly down the middle of a road devoid of traffic. But daily death tolls and pictures of exhausted NHS workers bruised by hours in PPE made her cry. And whilst the world was distracted, poaching on game reserves and the rape of the rainforests increased. Her days had quickly slipped into a routine. A new normal encased her, but very soon it felt not new. And it was not normal. It wasn’t working from home so much as being at home trying to work. But she was grateful she had a job and a role that she could fulfil remotely, from the safety of her house. Not entirely sure if she was lucky not to have the distraction of young children and the additional burden of home schooling. On reflection she was saddened because her brood were all grown and not around to photo-bomb her video calls. Initial terror that she would catch ‘it’ from the post had waned. The Olive and Mabel Labrador video

44

commentaries made her laugh. Although she’d been a bit concerned in those early days that she’d run out of food. A good sort out through her cupboards and freezer had seen the creation of some interesting meals from stuff past its ‘best before’ dates – and nobody got sick. Supermarket delivery slots being the stuff of myth and legend, the small independent shops and suppliers became local heroes. And that was when the baking had started; the peach upside down cakes and lemon drizzles, the spiced tea loaf and even some bread rolls – not an unqualified success, what with the lack of strong white bread flour. To call them heavy was a kindness. Himself had described it as ‘elven Lembas bread’, convinced that a man could march for a whole day after eating just one. Bless him for binge watching all that Lord of the Rings with her. Nothing she cooked was remotely slimming. There was the delicious beer batter for the fish and chips that she had missed so much. But the chips.. not chip shoppie enough somehow. Home made tartare sauce was a bit of a revelation though and the fish cakes with melting cheese centres were yum. A pastry-athon to the backdrop of an entire season of Death in Paradise on Netflix, had populated the freezer with sausage rolls, pasties and quiche. Comfort, comfort, comfort. Thank goodness for the exercise bike, because just going out once to walk the dogs was not enough to burn off all those lockdown calories. Her tomato plant plugs ‘by post’ were sad and near death when delivered. A week in transit, during the late frosts had done them in. But then the garden centres re-opened. A tiny bit of normality returned (although runner bean plants were like hen’s teeth apparently). Compost

purchased brought joy. Packets of seeds, excitement. Lockdown eased a tiny bit more and she saw her UK-based daughter in the flesh for the first time since January, albeit from two metres away. It was so good to see her, but her arms ached to hug and to hold. They had a bring-your-own picnic and together apart they chatted. As they walked, their dogs played, chasing and rolling about – the canine world was blissfully untroubled by social distancing and no-one was going to report them on 101. But the littering by day trippers to parks and beaches made her angry – and the thoughtlessness of people barbecuing in the tinder dry forests made her despair. She wondered about the harsh lessons learned and the enormous changes wrought by the pandemic. What would they, the lessons and the changes, ultimately, at some final reckoning, at some future time, on balance, result in? A brave new world; kinder, cashless, greener, cleaner? One where we respect the planet and all of the creatures unfortunate enough to share it with us? One in which key workers, at least, get paid more, instead of clapped for? But a line popped into and kept on running through her head – she couldn’t remember where she’d heard it. It bothered her so much, she felt compelled to Google it. “Then we’re stupid and we’ll die.” Turns out it was from a film about a dystopian future.

COMMUNITY Maid Marian Stay Loyal Stay Local: Major Campaign Launched By Hampshire Fare

County food group Hampshire Fare is launching a major new campaign supporting local producers and independent retailers as lockdown eases. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, explains: “This campaign is a rallying cry! It is a celebration of the brilliant service people have received from independent retailers and local producers during lockdown. More importantly, however, the objective of our campaign is to ask: why should that experience of going into a local store, being looked after, receiving personal service, perhaps being provided with home delivery, end with lockdown easing?” Hampshire Fare’s Stay Loyal Stay Local campaign is about reminding and encouraging people to stay loyal to those relationships they have formed with local independents, producers and suppliers over the past ten weeks. Key to the campaign are artwork designs to be used in shop windows and across online and print media that champion the individuals behind Hampshire’s local independents. Tracy Nash continues: “During lockdown we have seen local producers and independents come up with ingenious ways to service their communities. Some set up online shopping facilities and provided click and collect or home delivery services. Others have diversified, setting up new box schemes. This campaign recognises their efforts – stepping in when supermarkets struggled with supply chains and deliveries. The Campaign is being supported by Hampshire County Council and Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (EM3) through funding from EM3’s Economic Recovery Plan to support the area’s long-term vitality.

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “This coronavirus outbreak has shown us how we can live differently. Local food shops and suppliers stepped up immediately when the Government asked us to stay at home as much as possible, playing an enormous role in helping us keep our cupboards stocked when we needed to reduce our travel and stay safe. “We are now at a turning point as restrictions on our travel start to ease, and we are in a position to make choices about how we want our future to look. I’m delighted the County Council is able to support this initiative to support Hampshire’s economic recovery from the pandemic, and would urge people to keep hold of some of the positive lifestyle changes we’ve had to make in the last few months and continue to use local shops, supporting local producers and suppliers.” The first phase of the campaign will encompass local producers and small independent retailers who have been operating throughout lockdown. The second phase will support the return of the hospitality sector. Tracy Nash adds: “We want to sing out about all the good work that has been achieved so that people will stay loyal and others will consider using local as well. Our farmers, local producers and small independents are the lifeblood of this county. They helped their communities and through this campaign we are empowering them to ask their communities for support in return. They are going to need all the support they can get. We are simply asking - Stay Loyal Stay Local.”

Since 2016, Winchester’s Heritage Open Days festival has grown to become an important event in the local calendar, with thousands of visitors attending the programme of events. This year, with the uncertainty surrounding when cultural events will be able to run once more following the Covid-19 Pandemic, it has become clear that the traditional format of the festival will not be possible in September. The focus this year will be digital. Commenting on the decision to focus on digital events this year, Festival Director Nicky Gottlieb said,

Winchester Heritage Open Days festival to go digital for 2020 The organisers of the Winchester Heritage Open Days festival are delighted to announce that this year's 2020 festival will be going ahead, with free events and local stories at its heart.

“We are enormously grateful to all our sponsors, supporters, volunteers and event organisers whohave helped the Festival grow to become the success that it is. I am sure that there will be people who look forward to the events every year and will be disappointed by our decision not to hold events in the usual way this year. However, it is important the festival is safe, is inclusive

and does not add further cost or burden to businesses and organisations who at this time are getting back on their feet. Whilst we hope one or two organisations may be able to hold some in-person events (in line with government guidance at the time of the festival), our focus will be on encouraging digital events. We do this with the expectation that this year’s festival will be smaller. We are working hard to plan for a digital festival this September, and this will include our very own podcast channel. We very much hope to welcome all our events and visitors back in the usual way in September 2021.” Further details on the programme for the 2020 Digital Heritage Open Days Festival and the launch of our podcast channel in August will be released in due course. For more information visit: www.winchesterheritageopendays.org

to view. This is a major step forward and allows us to give broadcast HD TV quality streaming year-round. I therefore call on the government to urgently review the precise details of these guidelines, so that TFT – and the thousands of theatres and arts venues across the country – can reopen to live audiences as soon as possible.”

Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre said, “Although the decision to allow theatres and cinemas to reopen is welcome, the restriction preventing any live performances until further notice is extremely disappointing.

week of an ozone sanitiser – and so far, we are the only theatre in the UK to have one. This will sanitise all auditoria, public spaces and stage areas, killing 'all known germs' bugs and viruses including Covid19. It will be applied after every show after audiences and cast have left the building and ensure that the building is completely sanitised and safe. We will also have thermal imaging on entry to the venue and hand sanitising stations. All of our venues will continue to operate with the safer 2 metres social distancing and 6 metres distancing from the stage to audience when musicals are on. This is on top of the increased cleaning and sanitising regime we have put in place.

“In recent weeks we have been pressing ahead with plans to reopen, safely and keeping the interests of our patrons and our members to the fore. We took delivery this

“Furthermore, we have invested in over £60,000 worth of camera, sound and vision mixing equipment so we can stream our shows live and to begin with, will be FREE

We are ready to reopen The Prime Minister has just announced changes to the government’s policy on the coronavirus lockdown. The new guidelines will allow theatres to reopen on July 4 and there is a relaxing of the two-metre rule to one metres – however there can be no live performances for the current time.

Currently their offering includes weekly group classes in French and German for EYFS/Pre-schoolers, KS1 and KS2 which provides students with a well-rounded

Perins School supports The Murray Parish Trust As schools all over the country reopen their doors today, students of the Perins School Theatre in Alresford, where The Murray Parish Trust is based, have marked their return with a stunning performance of ‘Beautiful City’ from the musical ‘Godspell’ which you can hear on YouTube. The words of Stephen Schwartz’s ‘Beautiful City’ speak hopefully of collectively creating a better world, a message which the Perins students share as we emerge from these quiet, reflective times feeling positive and thankful. They dedicated the song, not only for the Perins community, but for all students across the country, the inspirational NHS staff, key workers and teachers, who’ve shown such commitment through these

Katrin from Lingotot Winchester says: Having two children aged 4 and 7 I fully understand the challenges home-schooling can bring. We have been really pleased to be able to provide online classes to students. Our private tuition offering is the ideal solution for children at any level of language knowledge that need to catch up or advance further. We have been really pleased with the responses and the children seem to embrace the online tailored lesson plans.

NEW FOR 2020: Lingotot Forest School programme will be launching (subject to government guidelines). Children will have the opportunity to learn a new language in an outdoor learning environment with fun and interactive lessons.

challenging and unprecedented times. They have chosen to support The Murray Parish Trust which was founded in 2014 by actors James Murray and Sarah Parish in memory of their late daughter Ella-Jayne, and is dedicated to the advancement of paediatric emergency medicine across the South of England including the Channel Islands. Sarah says: “The ongoing support of the local community means so much to us and is vital to the charity’s ability to continue to support Southampton Hospital’s long-term goals as well as the inspirational NHS staff who’ve worked so tirelessly throughout this crisis.” Jim adds: “The charity, which has successfully raised almost £5 million to date to redevelop the Children’s Emergency and Trauma Department, is currently working in partnership with Southampton Hospital to raise £5.5 million to create an intraoperative MRI Suite. An iMRI Suite will enable the hospital to undertake real time brain scans during

surgery for life-threatening conditions including brain tumours, head trauma, epilepsy and hydrocephalus increasing the chance that abnormalities can be removed totally, safely and successful in a single operation.” If you would like to find out more about the charity and the iMRI appeal visit: https:// themurrayparishtrust.com/imri-suiteappeal/ Donations can be made https:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/donation-web/ charity?charityId=1015533.

345 Preschool

Nurturing Pre-school in the heart of the Alresford community with spaces available for children from 2 years and 6 months – join us for 2020/2021! Play to Learn

At 345 we provide a caring and fun environment in which children can learn through play, in a way and at a pace that is right for them. With a high ratio of adults to children we encourage and promote lively and enquiring minds, and a caring and positive attitude towards others. The children are involved in planning their learning experience allowing them to be creative, have a voice and feel included. We work closely with the whole family and parents and carers are encouraged to come in and involve themselves in the preschool.

The Hall

Our light, spacious and versatile hall provides the perfect setting for activities for the children to enjoy. Activities available for the children include a creative area, a malleable table (e.g. playdoh, cornflour, shaving foam, oats, etc.), writing area and construction (building blocks, transport, etc.). We also provide a wide range of role play and small world play to let their imaginations run wild. The children have the opportunity to choose what they would like to play with throughout the day.

The Courtyard

This is our outside classroom, where the children are free to come and go between the hall and courtyard area throughout the session, whatever the weather, to use ride-on toys as well as playing with the construction bricks and navigating obstacle courses. The children are also able to investigate the environment and play with sand and water.

Out and about

We take full advantage of our location in the heart of Alresford, organising regular trips out and inviting visitors from the local community in to talk to the children. Activities include outings to the local library on World Book Day, joining the community at the annual Alresford Watercress and Music festivals, as well as the Alresford Show and Apple Day. We also go on nature walks to feed the ducks and visit the local fire station, and much more!

Forest Friday

On Friday mornings we walk up to Sun Hill Infant School with the children to access their pond area, timber trail, mud kitchen and fire pit. This creates exciting opportunities for the children as well as excellent links with the school.

Sun Hill Infant School

Snack bar

Our close partnership with Sun Hill Infant school ensures the transition to “big school” is a positive experience for everyone.

345 provide a snack bar every day with a range of healthy snacks that the children can help themselves to during the morning.

Special Educational Needs

As part of 345’s policy to make sure that its provision meets the needs of each individual child we take account of any special needs a child may have. We work closely with parents and Hampshire County Council’s Area Inclusion Co-ordinator to ensure appropriate provision for children with Special Education Needs.

Meet the new headmaster of St Swithun’s prep school, Winchester

Jonathan Brough is joining St Swithun’s in September after ten years leading Hurlingham School in Putney and a further six as head of prep at City of London School for Girls. He has also been an educational journalist, computer coder and a schools’ inspector Jonathan was interviewed by Jane Gandee, head of St Swithun’s senior school. Their conversations can be viewed in full on the school website. What do you think are the characteristics of best practice primary education? Primary schools should ensure that all children develop enduring passions

58

for learning, for literature and for life itself: that’s the fundamental purpose of education today. Pupils must, therefore, never merely be taught as a box ticking exercise, governed by learning objectives in a shallow and impoverished, one-size-fitsall model. Instead, best practice involves them becoming truly educated in a manner that introduces them to the widest possible range of activities and celebrates their own unique individuality, as well as the beautiful diversity within their community, as they explore and foster their own interests, talents and skills. Every day must be an adventure and every lesson must contain something new. Life’s adventure is best embraced with courage and enthusiasm! What are you looking forward to most about joining St Swithun’s? St Swithun’s is a cutting-edge prep school with a fantastic community of pupils, parents and staff: there are so many opportunities just waiting to be enjoyed, both within the new school buildings and outside in the wonderful 45 acres of grounds. At St Swithun’s, children develop the awe, wonder and creativity that enable them all to make their studies and passions truly their own. It’s the higher order thinking skills and competencies, encouraging

children never to be satisfied with the obvious but to look deeper into things – to ask why – that develop the enquiring minds which, in the future, are going to open the locked doors for which science hasn’t yet given us the key. I’m also looking forward to working in a girls’ school again. Girls do learn differently; in a co-educational setting there’s always a danger that they’ll be held back by the comparative immaturity of boys, so it can often be much easier for them to reach for the stars in a single sex educational environment. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I’m a great believer in bibliotherapy for everyone, adults and children alike: when I want to unwind, there’s nothing better than a piece of gripping fiction! One of my recent favourites is Orphan Island by the American writer Laurel Snyder; it’s the perfect text for anyone approaching changes in their life! I am currently recommending Kind, an illustrated children’s book by a collection of authors and illustrators, wherever I go. As human beings we need to be kind to each other- and, if we get that right, we won’t ever go far wrong with anything else that we do.
