Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
After an initial meeting with Ben at Happy Kitchens we decided that the kitchen face lift option would not work for us. So we invited other kitchen companies to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing. Thank you Ben, Dan and James. The fitting team are fantastic, skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. I would happily recommend the Happy Kitchen team to anyone. Mr M. Hensman

SPRING IS TIME TO VENTURE OUT WITH THE YOUNGEST WILDLIFE FANS
WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO SELL?
As the weather improves and the days lengthen, there is no better time to take young children outside to introduce them to wildlife. From sensory play and buggy walks to natural crafts and outdoor exploration, we offer a great variety of fun activities to connect families with local wildlife. An early connection with nature boosts health and wellbeing, and the outdoors offers endless opportunities for new adventures and discoveries! If you have a child under 5, bring them along to one of our many under 5’s sessions at Testwood Lakes nature reserve. For children aged 2-5 years there are weekly Forest School sessions on Monday mornings. Families can book ahead for a 6 week term (£39) and children can cook on a campfire, use tools to make things from wood and play in nature. Every second Tuesday and every last Friday of the month families are invited to drop in for a Wildlife Tots session themed around a story with some exploring outside and some crafting inside. And for dads there is a Dads and Tots drop in session every last Saturday of the month. These sessions are all 10.30am-12noon. For even younger ones (0-2 years) there is a weekly Natural Babies session every Tuesday morning. There are buggy walks, crafts for adults, sensory play and songs for babies. For Wildlife Tots and Babies sessions, we ask for a suggested donation of £5 per child. For more information on any of our sessions for under 5’s, please email testwoodlakes@hiwwt.org.uk or call 02380667929
This is a question I am often asked and the straightforward answer is, the right time to sell is when it’s the right time for you. Within the property market, there is much written about when is the best time to buy and sell. Just like trading other investments you can try to play the market to your advantage, and this certainly applies with investment buyers, but when it comes to selling a home, it is often more about the right time for you rather than trying to judge the seasonal and economic market. There are inevitably peaks and troughs during every year but this doesn’t take into account your own reasons for wanting to sell. So, be clear as to what you want to achieve and then plan accordingly. Generally, if you are selling you are likely to be buying at the same time, so any fluctuations in the market can be offset. Once you have made the decision to sell then timings around what you are trying to achieve are important. Plan ahead and allow plenty of time to speak to the experts. Mortgage Brokers, Accountants, Solicitors and, of course, Property Agents all have an important part to play in the process. They will be able to provide clarity where needed and not just in relation to values, taxes or lenders but processes, timings and legislation. Having worked in the industry in the South of England for almost 20 years, one thing I am confident of is that buyers choose locations for schooling, work, retirement, access and natural beauty and fortunately our region offers the very best. If now is the right time for you, then now is the time to get the ball rolling and contact a property expert you can trust. GARDEN EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT
WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH! You may not give too much thought to what you throw away in your rubbish bin each week, apart from feeling a bit more virtuous about what you recycle, but the cost of collecting, processing / recycling all household rubbish in Hampshire costs Hampshire’s County and Local Councils a staggering £100,000,000 each year. At a time of cuts in so-cial care, education and library closures, most would agree that this is money that could be better spent elsewhere. It is difficult to find anyone who admits to wasting much food, so it may surprise you to know that this is what comprises 35% of all kerbside household waste. More shocking is the fact that three quarters of wasted food was edible at some point (so need not have been thrown away). There is a huge carbon footprint attached to the food that we eat (production, storage, refrigeration, transport) and some 22 million tonnes of carbon are tied up just in the food we throw out each year in the UK. Wasting food costs families money and it is estim-ated that the average household wastes between £60 £70 a year on the food that they don’t use. So, when we waste food, it costs us money, council tax payers money and makes a substantial addition to the average UK citizen’s carbon footprint. Are you part of the problem? You may not think you are part of the problem, but who hasn’t thrown away the occasional piece of rotten fruit or mouldy bread? How often do you discover forgotten leftovers lurking at the back of the fridge, opened jars of preserves turning blue or find that you have overestimat-ed (again) the amount of rice or pasta that you actually require? Christ-mas or other times when you have guests in the house can be a partic-ularly bad time for over-purchasing and overcatering. You may not think you throw away that much, but multiply it by the number of houses in your street, the number of streets in your town and you begin to get an idea of the size of the problem.
As a nation, we throw away 1.4 million bananas every day, 20 million slices of bread, 1.1 million eggs, nearly half of all apples purchased and pour 3.1 million glasses of milk down the sink. Can you be part of the solution? Shopping is often a hurried experience and once inside a supermarket, clever marketing techniques will seduce you into buying more than you may actually need. There is no point in buy 2, get 1 free if the third item is going to be thrown away. If you are serious about not wasting food, you will need to plan your meals for the week and shop accordingly, re-sisting those tempting but unnecessary offers. Checking your fridge regularly can identify any Items nearing their “use by” date - which can potentially be frozen right up until that date. Bread can be frozen in slices (or freeze a whole sliced loaf) and taken out as required. Over ripe bananas can be frozen and used in smoothies or cakes. Leftovers can be used in all sorts of exciting ways. For more in-formation and inspiration, check out www. lovefoodhatewaste.com or www.hants.gov.uk/smartliving. Recycling at its best Composting vegetable waste from the kitchen creates a free and valu-able resource for your garden soil, locking in carbon rather than releas-ing it into the atmosphere. For all the facts see www. recyclenow.com/compost. If you are concerned about vermin, plastic cone shaped bins set on concrete or paving slabs, with chicken wire tied around the opening should pre-empt any problems. Paving slabs set with small gaps should allow composting worms to come up from the soil. If you are setting bins onto solid concrete, just introduce some worms from a friend’s compost heap. If you don’t have the space or time to manage a traditional compost bin, a wormery might fit the bill, producing more modest amounts of compost and pretty much guaranteed to be pest free. Perhaps a more child friendly form of recycling fruit and vegetable waste for young families. Written by Cathy Swann Continued in next months magazine Cathy Swann volunteers as a Community Champion on behalf of Hampshire County Council, promoting the benefits of reducing household waste in her local community. If you are passionate about food, gardening or environmental issues and keen to share your knowledge and enthusiasm with others in your area, then why not consider becoming a Champion. THE SANDWICH SHOP/ THE HORSE BOX BAR
After the sudden death of Sarah’s son Christopher in 2012 she realised that life was too short not to try new things. Shortly after Sarah opened The Sandwich Shop, Alresford which provided the challenge she needed to refocus and move forward again, she dug deep to establish the innovative business she has today. 7 years on she says “one of the best things about having the shop has undoubtedly been the interaction with the customers – many of which come in every single day”. You will often see her in Alresford personally delivering business lunch orders on the back of her fabulous mint green Peugeot scooter. Sarah says “Christopher worked for Eddolls Carpets in Broad Street and although it makes me very sad he is not here to see our achievement, he’d certainly have been one of the many customers popping into the shop on their way to work”. In 2017 Sarah embarked on a further venture and bought an old Rice Horse Box and converted it into a mobile bar, which has been hired for many functions, parties and weddings over the past 2 years. This has led to the recent launch of new booking opportunities. One of which is designed for couples who are getting married in the local area. It is now possible to hire The Horse Box to be set up outside the church or wedding venue and whilst photographs are being taken, guests are served chilled Prosecco or Champagne and children soft drinks. Couples say it works like a dream as they don’t have to worry about keeping guests waiting at the church. Sarah acknowledges without the continued support from extended family, great staff and friends from The Sandwich Shop this would not have been achievable. 9 SPRING LAWN CARE ESSENTIALS
A
s days lengthen, we venture outside and begin to notice how our lawns look. Many lawns struggle a little over the winter. Let’s look at what can be done now to get your lawn ready for a beautiful summer
1. Moss Moss in itself isn’t a problem. It’s green and soft under foot. Nice to look at a lovely to walk on. Come mid-summer your mossy lawn will yellow and die – not so good to look at or walk on then. Moss is relatively easy to rake out of your lawn provided there is not much of it. If your lawn has a heavy moss burden then a petrol driven scarifier will be needed. I have two important rules. 1) Always apply a moss killing treatment after you have raked or scarified your lawn to kill and loose pieces of moss. 2) Never, ever mow into moss. If you have moss in your lawn that you can’t remove then raise your mower blades so the grass leaf is at least 2cm above the moss. 2. Dethatch Thatch is a layer of organic matter on top of the soil above the roots of your grass plants. It has little or no microbial activity and will not decompose. It prevents water and nutrition reaching the roots. Spring is the right time to dethatch turf. Cutting into the thatch to introduce air spaces is ideal. Boosting microbial activity with a professional biobooster or compost tea 3. Aerate Aeration is by far the most beneficial mechanical process for your lawn. Organic matter is essential for the life within your soil. That life consists of beneficial fungi and bacteria which make micronutrients available to grass. In addition, there are worms and insects all responsible for breaking down organic matter. These living things need the 3 building blocks of life – water, air and food. Roots grow in the air gaps between the soil particles not in the soil itself. By aerating your lawn, you are introducing the air gaps essential to support that soil activity. In addition, aeration relieves compaction and helps reduce waterlogging too.
rake helps you keep fit, but in addition it removes debris and helps the grass leaf stand upright. When things begin to grow again in the early spring it’s a good idea to give your lawn a bit of a hair-brush, get things standing to attention and ready for a mow. Spring raking removes lingering autumn leaves and grass blades that didn't survive winter. Do it now. 5. Over-seed Repair bare patches in your lawn by over-seeding. Remove the dead patch of grass with a rake. In-fill with John Innes #3 compost and mix seed into the top layer. Give it a good water and, to keep the moisture and birds off, cover it with a sheet of newspaper until the seed germinates 6. Fertilise All living things need the right kind of food in the right quantities. Many lawn owners forget this Lawns need the right amount of Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus throughout the year. The occasional sprinkle of a 3-in-1 spring feed from the garden centre is not really cutting it.You ideally want controlled-release nutrition, more of a lawn buffet than a Christmas dinner. This way you don’t have a huge flush of growth meaning you have to get the mower out of the shed as soon as you’ve put it away. If you are going to feed your own lawn focus on quality over quantity. Focus on feeding the soil and let the soil feed the plant. If in doubt, speak to a lawn care professional 7. Weed control Spring is the best time to get weeds under control. Catch weeds early in the season if you can. Leave weeds until later and you are likely to have all their seedlings to deal with too. Some weeds are harder to control than others and this is where professional grade weed control products become essential. Weed control is complex stuff but get it right and your lawn’s going to look great this summer. 8. Water Well wetting agents really. Along with air and food, lawns need water. Many home owners resist watering their lawns for fear of the cost or wastage. The good news is that it costs less than £5 to water the average sized lawn and you only really need to do that every other week. Now here’s the secret; lawn care professionals make use of wetting agents to make the water that’s applied work harder. Wetting agents are very affordable, they keep water in the root-zone and mean that you can apply half as much water, water less often whilst getting the same results. 9. Mow The majority of lawn issues I see can be traced back to a poor mowing regime. Get mowing right and you are half way towards a wonderful lawn. Make sure your mower blades are sharp. Mow frequently enough to not cut off more than ¼ of the leaf length each mow. Don’t always mow in the same direction – start from different places on the lawn. Ideally mulch mow, leaving clippings behind to feed the essential soil microbes.
4. Rake Leaves from trees, dead grass blades and moss can prevent moisture and nutrients from easily reaching the roots of your lawn. Using a spring

STEVE BRINE M.P Good news! The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester has now received confirmation of guidelines and some £5m in initial seed funding to support a rebuild at the Romsey Road site.
community and patients it serves.Winchester Hospital (and Basingstoke which forms part of the HHFT of course) are much-loved and have done great service but they were built many years ago and are now showing their age. It was this we had to ensure Ministers recognised. The programme is at a very early stage, and lots of possibilities are now under consideration but I am pleased the Trust will be actively seeking to engage with us to get views on the kind of hospital we want to see in the city.
Back in September I announced that we’d secured significant investment for the Trust as part of the Health Infrastructure Plan which is designed to support 40 hospital building projects across the country. A team is now being brought together to build safe and sustainable services in Winchester for the long-term and I couldn’t be more pleased. Needless to say, this is fantastic for all the NHS locally but above all for the
I am regularly in the RHCH – meeting with senior managers, staff and patients – and will be doing my bit to ensure this engagement is as wide as possible and I will go on making the point that obstetric-led maternity services in Winchester are an essential part of what makes a modern-day District General Hospital. You can follow progress at www.stevebrine.com/ prioritynhs
JACKIE’S COUNTY CORNER FOR MARCH
With some of the rural bus services offering just a few trips per day, could you benefit from the Hants Carshare scheme? Hampshire runs its own liftshare scheme. Anyone can join for free: you need to register your email address or Facebook account. The more people who join and submit journeys, the greater chance of a liftshare match! Go to hants. gov.uk and search ‘Hants Carshare’
Help shape Hampshire’s library service for the future This County Council consultation has a deadline of the 18th March. Hampshire County Council is asking people who live, work and study in Hampshire to have their say on proposed changes to libraries. Please have your say: libraries are not just about borrowing books these days: maybe you use it for the internet? Reading the newspaper? This consultation includes options for a 15%, 20% or 25% cut in library opening hours. The way people use library services is changing, but as well as responding to changing needs, the library service is looking to make savings of £1.76 million. All services across the County Council are making cuts to bridge the current funding gap. The Stagecoach 240 service start son the 22nd April and will run to the same timetable, using three drivers. I have made progress on the 95/96 routes too, though as I write, I do not have confirmation of services yet.
Almost every day, I read reports of a flood or blocked road, faded white lines or pothole on Facebook or local email lists. Please report them online to www.hants.gov.uk, and follow the icon saying roads and transport. It will take you to a variety of options. Residents’ reports are taken seriously- I often think more seriously than mine! If you don’t get the reply you expect, please contact me.
Secondly, constituents will not have missed my warning to South Western Railway since the turn of the year that the company must step up or step aside. I have recently been elected Vice Chairman of the new All-Party Parliamentary Group on SWR which will work to hold the company to account for its poor service. My message came after the Transport Secretary said that SWR’s financial statements suggested the franchise was not sustainable and put in place plans to protect the service in the event of a company failure.Watch this space or www. stevebrine.com/trains More via my website but please ‘like’ my Page at www.fb.com/SteveBrineMP for more instant updates. write a description and send it to me marked ‘My Way’ or tweet using #MyWay.Thank you! I attended the Green Halo event last month. Delegates from all over the south of the county listened to an inspirational speaker on London National Park City. National Parks represent different habitats right across the world-so why not London? They asked: does a fox (or a peregrine falcon) in the town have any less value than a fox (or falcon) in the country? The same applies to man too. Having just spent some time with the South Downs National Park planning team, the approach seemed to fit well. Tim Slaney, the Director of Planning at SDNPA says, ‘It is a privilege to build in the National Park and people should use that privilege wisely.’ I came away from the Green Halo event wondering why we don’t all have the same aims for biodiversity and sustainability right across the country? Glass recycling has increased hugely since the introduction of glass boxes collection boxes by WCC. Unfortunately the Bighton resident’s request for four boxes per household was not possible! Please take extra glass to the nearest HWRC or your local collection point.
The Winchester Movement Study led by Hampshire seems to be moving along slowly with lots of research and it all feels like very slow progress so I’d like to ask you as residents, passengers, cyclists and drivers what change you’d like to see to improve your journeys. If you see a good idea, please take a picture or
Finally- a huge thanks to the New Leaf group who have produced a website offering advice and guidance on recycling and ‘living greener’. Go to newleafalresford.org for a simple guide to making a start! Cllr. Jackie Porter T: 07973 696 085 jackie.porter@hants.gov.uk Twitter: @ JackieLibDem

not clear. Most people with Lyme’s disease will be treated with a three week course of antibiotics.
ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS Tick bites and Lymes Disease During the summer months we often receive calls about tick bites and Lyme Disease. Lyme disease is an illness caused by bacteria that live in the gut of some ticks. Ticks do not jump or fly, but they can attach themselves to passing animals and people by biting through skin and sucking blood. Left alone, they usually drop off after about eight days. Ticks are most active from March until November. Here are the answers to the usual questions that we get asked. Please also see our surgery themed notice board. How can I avoid being bitten? Try to keep skin covered if you walk in higher risk areas such as woodland and long grass, and check your skin afterwards for ticks. Don’t forget to check the scalp. Ticks can be very small - about the size of a poppy seed - or as large as a small spider. Consider using an insect repellent. I have a tick on my skin – help! Remove the tick as soon as possible using a pair of fine tipped tweezers, or a tick removal kit which can be bought from the chemist, veterinary practice or from the internet.. DO NOT use Vaseline, nail polish or matches. Why not buy a tick removal kit now, and keep it in your first aid kit? Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upwards slowly and firmly. Clean the bite area with soap and water or antiseptic and keep an eye on the bite area for several weeks to observe any changes. There’s a tiny black dot – I think I’ve left a bit of mouth part behind. Mouthparts left in the skin can cause local irritation but try not to worry. You do NOT need to see the nurse to have it dug out. They should be left alone. Do I need an antibiotic straight away to prevent Lyme’s Disease? No. Try not to worry. Not all ticks in the UK carry Lyme’s disease. Transmission of Lyme’s is much less likely if the tick was attached for less than 24 hours and is not yet very swollen. Current advice is that in the UK there is no need for treatment except if symptoms develop. So what should I look out for? A small red circular patch may appear soon after a tick bite and persist for a few days; this is normal. If the red patch does not disappear within a couple of weeks or begins to spread outwards, it may indicate Lyme disease and you should contact your GP for advice The typical rash of Lyme’s disease that develops at the site of the bite is often described as looking like a bull’s eye on a dart board, and spreads outwards. It usually spreads to at least 5cm diameter, and may be very much bigger. Not everyone gets a rash: people with Lyme’s disease may experience multiple flu like symptoms such as fever and sweats, chills, fatigue, neck pain or stiffness, headaches, joint or muscle pains. Other symptoms light include sharp, prickly nerve pains, oraparalysis of the facial muscles called Bell’s Palsy. When should I see the GP? See the GP if you develop any of the above the symptoms and tell the GP if you remember being bitten by a tick, or think you may have been, or if you have spent time in areas where ticks might be found, such as woodlands, grasslands, parks and allotments. Blood tests may be needed if you have not developed the characteristic rash, and sometimes these need to be repeated a month later, if the diagnosis is

Welcome to our new Receptionist! Please offer a warm Alresford welcome to our new Receptionist Melanie Griffin who joined us at the beginning of February & is replacing Susan who has worked in Reception for the past 6 years & will be dearly missed by the staff & patients of the Surgery…although we do have it on pretty good authority that she will be helping us out from time to time! Stoma Support Do you or a member of your family have a stoma? It may be one of a number of types of stoma but the psychological effects are likely to be similar. Patients can feel very alone and unaware that support from other people in a similar position can make a big difference. We were delighted to hear that there is a patient liaison service locally that can provide non medical support and advice to all ostomates and their families before, during and after surgery. The service is offered free of charge using volunteer patients who are willing to give up their time for other patients. Patients who have a stoma or are due to have a stoma, either permanent or temporary, can be put in touch with the service. Please contact hampshireostomatesgroup@gmail.com for more information or contact Sue Lees at the surgery who can put you in touch with an individual volunteer.

LOCAL CHOIR IN EXCITING PROJECT WITH PRESTIGIOUS LONDON ORCHESTRA With 200 years of musical experience between them, The Hanover Band and Southampton Philharmonic Choir are embarking on an exciting two-year collaboration. What was originally envisaged as being part of the Band’s ambitious Beethoven 250 project, the collaboration has evolved into a two-year celebration of three of the most famous composers of their time. The Band and choir will perform together at Winchester Cathedral in the spring of each of the two years, and then in London, at St John’s Smith Square in the summer. This year, the planned concerts are Bach Mass in B Minor at Winchester Cathedral on 14 March 2020 followed by a Mozart programme in London on 7 June 2020 comprising Symphony No 39 in E flat and the wonderful Requiem. The plans for 2021 are performances of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at both Winchester Cathedral and St John’s Smith Square. This is a wonderful opportunity for Southampton Philharmonic Choir, who are delighted to be able to perform some of the most well-known pieces of classical music with the extraordinary Hanover Band, one of Britain’s finest period instrument orchestras. The two organisations have worked together on a number of projects since 2008, when they joined forces for a performance of Handel’s rarely heard Theodora. Despite the disparity in the number of members (the choir has some 160 singers at full strength), performing with a period orchestra provides a much more intimate atmosphere for concert goers.Tickets for the Mass in B Minor concert are available now from the Winchester Cathedral box office. THE HANOVER BAND Formed in London in 1980 and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the Hanover Band has an international reputation for the excellence of its performances and recordings of 18th and 19th century music alongside a commitment to the education of young players and developing new audiences. www.thehanoverband.com
SOUTHAMPTON PHILHARMONIC CHOIR Formed in 1860 and celebrating 160 years this year, Southampton Philharmonic Choir is one of the longest-established and most respected choirs in Southern England and performs choral music from the classical and contemporary repertoire with professional orchestras and soloists. The longevity of the ‘Phil’ is perhaps testament to the enduring appeal of choral singing. www.southamptonphil.org Image at top of article is courtesy of The Hanover Band
ALLEGRI’S MISERERE A GRAND TOUR OF EUROPEAN SACRED MUSIC Romsey Choral Society is always delighted to perform their spring concert in the outstanding surroundings of the church at St Cross, Winchester. This year, the new musical director, Richard Pearce, will lead the choir on a Grand musical Tour of Europe spanning five centuries and showcasing music by composers hailing from 10 countries! The programme offers the audience a range of pieces to suit all tastes, and showcases the versatility of the choir and the remarkable acoustic of the lovely building. The concert starts at 7.30pm on Sunday 22nd March 2020 with tickets priced at £15. The choir’s performance standard and repertoire continue to develop under the guidance of Richard Pearce, building on the work of the previous conductor Jamie W Hall. The choir continues to attract attention from local music lovers and welcomes new members each term. As well as structured concerts in Romsey and Winchester, the choir is pleased to support local partners such as Jane Scarth House with the Messiah in November 2019, and Norwood Primary School in Eastleigh for their Carol concert in December. Romsey Choral Society is also looking forward to performing with the City of Southampton orchestra as the opening event for Romsey Festival 2020 in July, in a performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius. Tickets also available on the door. So get your tickets now for a musical Tour of Europe, starting in England and travelling through time and place from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, from Portugal and Italy to Germany and Norway and more – then back to England for the finale. WELLBEING
VILLAGE AGENT - ARE YOU EATING ENOUGH? Many people are trying to cut back on calories, but did you know that 15% of older people are undernourished. The reasons for this can be varied. Mobility issues may affect the ability to shop and cook, dentures fitting incorrectly may make eating uncomfortable and poor health or low mood may affect a person’s appetite.
SO, DO YOU TRUST YOUR TAP WATER? Do you remember the last time you were able to trust and reconnect with the ancient fresh and wild therapeutic qualities of water? Though we would all love to have mountain spring water flowing into our homes! Our reality is different, we have grown accustomed to the Eau de toilette of Chlorine and would prefer not to dwell on the possibilities of what else might be finding its way into our tap water, such as micro-plastics, oestrogens, fluoride, and Glyphosate.(1) Does our distrust in tap water(2) persuade us to buy bottled water, even though we know this tethers us to the environmental catastrophe of more plastic bottle pollution? Is there a water system capable of removing the mischief in our tap water, whilst re-creating the therapeutic qualities of vital spring water? What value would we place on such an innovation? In 1979 Jochberg, Austria, just such an innovation was created, known as ‘Grander Water Revitalization’ This discovery challenges orthodox thinking and now 41 years later, along with many peer reviewed papers (3) .(4) (5) it is now clear that the science of water is far more complex than was first realized. As in the ancient theory of Homeopathy, water is now understood to have memory and the capacity to carry information (8). We have entered a new era of scientific understanding that gives us new distinctions in the science of water and the impact that water has on our cellular health.(6) (7) (8)(9)
What is good nutrition? Good nutrition is getting the balance of food types right, thinking about portion size and the frequency of meals. Find a balance across the day by eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, 3-4 portions of starchy carbohydrates, 2-3 portions of proteins like fish, eggs, beans and meat and 2-3 portions of dairy or alternatives. What are the warning signs of nutrition issues? • Unplanned weight loss which will show in loose clothing or rings • Frequent or prolonged illness due to a reduction in the body’s natural defences • Loss of interest in activities and withdrawal from social events • Finding it hard to keep warm and to concentrate • Feeling weak and tired • A lack of equipment, beverages and food supplies in the home How can you combat poor nutrition? • Take nourishing drinks and supplements in additional to meals • If appetite is low, eat small amounts but more frequently • Have breakfast to set you up for the day • Seek medical help early to help prevent hospital stays for infections • Ask for nutritional advice from your pharmacist, practice nurse or GP Alternatively, contact your local Village Agent Denise on: 07969 376023 Village Agents are volunteers who can help you find information and local services that will enable you to stay living safely and independently.

The Alresford Pigs are well known for recycling mobility scooters around our older and less mobile residents. Occasionally however power wheelchairs are also donated for recycling, and often the people who might need these aids are less likely to consider approaching the Pigs. Currently we have two power chairs available, and unless an Alresford or SO24 District resident needs such an item, they will be sold via Ebay to raise much needed funds. If you know someone who could benefit from these, please call us now!

Luxury items in Lymington
L
ymington. This colourful coastal town is an ancient seaport with a rich maritime history. Situated on the west bank of the Lymington River, on the edge of the Solent, this exclusive town is a major yachting centre with three marinas. The town began as an Anglo-Saxon village and is recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Lentune’. From the Middle Ages and up to the 19th century, Lymington was well-known for its salt making and from the early 19th century a thriving ship building industry. Much of the architecture you see today in Lymington is Georgian and Victorian, which adds to the exclusive feel. The High Street, which looks predominantly Georgian, is in fact made up of an eclectic mix of Georgian, Victorian, Art Deco with some traces of Medieval architecture. Our visit today takes us to see Giles Waite, owner of Watches of Distinction, and his wife, Elizangela Waite, owner of DiamondsR4ever, both luxurious, exclusive shops on Lymington High Street. Watches of Distinction has been a bastion of the High Street for more than 30 years, dealing in high end wristwatches. They specialise in sourcing and retailing new, pre-owned, rare and prestigious wrist watches from the worlds leading manufacturers including Rolex, Franck Muller, Cartier, and Breitling. Giles’ passion for watches has seen him establish an unsurpassed reputation over a 30 year period solely devoted to a high-quality professional trade in watches including Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Breitling etc. Giles’ extensive knowledge of watches has been sought for National and International magazine articles and through the media of Television. He is frequently commissioned to forensically examine watches to authenticate their provenance. From the outset, Giles has always offered a high quality service and his reliability and honesty has led him to be a foremost professional in his field. Purchasing or part exchanging a watch through Giles, you can be reassured that the watch you are buying is genuine and will come with a 12 months warranty. Whilst based in Lymington, Giles, sells watches worldwide having an extensive client base of new and repeat customers, including many well-known celebrities of music, television and film.
Not only selling watches, they can also service your watches for you. Being an established watch repair and restoration business, they offer a full watch repair and service facility and all repairs are undertaken using the latest equipment, technology, and best practice. They provide a service on most Swiss brands, specialising in Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Franck Muller and Breitling to name but a few. The repairers have benefited from training through not only qualification but years of knowledge with numerous premium Swiss watch houses and as such have gained a vast wealth of knowledge through not only training but years of experience within the industry. DiamondsR4ever was started after a conversation between Elizangela and Giles. Elizangela explains “My husband Giles has been dealing in high end wristwatches for more than 30 years. Prior to this he worked in the jewellery trade for many years establishing a reputation for working with fine and quality pieces for discerning clients. “We aim to combine his extensive knowledge and my passion. Together we will be able to accommodate our clients with guidance and advice along the exciting journey towards the acquisition of quality diamond jewellery and of course time pieces. Our aim is to make the experience of acquisition the first step towards the splendid pleasure of ownership.” For more information, you can call 01590 688641 (Watches of Distinction) or 01590 619084 (DiamondsR4ever) and visit their websites: www.watchesofdistinction.com and www.diamondsr4ever.uk, respectively.
We are a privately owned company based on the outskirts of the New Forest National Park, within the coastal market town of Lymington. We specialize in sourcing and retailing new, preowned, rare and prestigious wrist watches from the worlds leading manufacturers including Rolex, Franck Muller, Cartier, and Breitling. We provide a service on most Swiss brands, specialising in Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Franck Muller and Breitling to name but a few.
Allow me to introduce myself – My name is Elizangela Waite and as part of our new expansion into larger premises we are incorporating my new business “Diamonds are Forever” with my husband’s famous watch shop – “Watches of Distinction”. We aim to combine his extensive knowledge and my passion. Together we will be able to accommodate our clients with guidance and advice along the exciting journey towards the acquisition of quality diamond jewellery and of course time pieces. Our aim is to make the experience of acquisition the first step towards the splendid pleasure of ownership. Offering rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, we are sure to have something to suit all tastes.

HOME FEATURE
INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR THE COMING YEAR
With a new season around the corner, Spring cleaning is in the forefront of our minds. Moving into a new decade, there are certain items in our homes that can feel slightly passĂŠ, and others that could define home style for the early 2020s. De-cluttering the home is always a therapeutic experience, but trying to work out what to get dispense of and what to retain can be tricky. It is certainly not our place to say whether to replace an item purely because it isn't en vogue; but if you are set on updating the look of your home, here is what is likely to be on trend for the coming decade.
BIOPHILIA Biophilia, meaning love of nature, focuses on our innate attraction to nature and natural processes. This is certainly a word we will be seeing used much more during 2020, seeing it translated into our homes in terms of adding greenery and houseplants. The houseplant has certainly seen a revival in recent years. Not only do they add to the overall aesthetic of a room, they also improve air quality and remove airborne toxins, pollens, bacteria and mould. Spider plants, ferns, cacti, aloe vera and cheese plants, are all easy to care for and would look stunning in any living room. FORGET GREY, GO GREEN Grey has been the go-to paint colour that has defined the past decade
in all its shades. The market is now completely saturated with various different shades of grey, and it is too soon to say whether it is over or not, but it is being phased out in favour of other colours.Warmers shades (see pink, peach, etc) are gradually replacing grey; but trend forecasters are predicting mint green or 'neo mint' to take its place in 2020. Described as 'an oxygenating, fresh tone that harmonises science and technology with nature', this bright, crisp, shade sounds very appealing. SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE Much like the fashion industry, consumers are looking for well designed furniture with longevity. When it comes to choosing new items of furniture in 2020, don't automatically go for the cheapest option. Find pieces that will last for many years and treat purchases as an investment.
ART DECO RETURNS! Harking back to the style of the original Roaring 20's, Art Deco inspired items are set to return - copper, gold or stainless steel are used in this interior trend for 2020. Mix plush fabrics and luxurious prints, glass and lacquer are also go-to styles.

ALRESFORD TOWN COUNCIL REPORTS Street Surgery On Saturday 25th January some Councillors took to the streets of Alresford to hear the views of residents. The Councillors enjoyed engaging with the public and were pleased to receive positive feedback. Therefore, more surgeries are planned. In the meantime, residents are invited to attend the Annual Town Assembly on 17th March 2020 where there will be an opportunity for public participation and to hear from guest speakers including Fin Bruce, who directed the Johnny Vegas film recently filmed around town. The next round of grant applications will be considered at the Town Council meeting on 28th April 2020. If you are a local charity or group, you could benefit from a grant. Applications to be submitted by 14th April 2020. Details are on our website.
Happy to Chat Introducing our first Happy to Chat Bench. Located on the river by Amy’s duck food station, a sign has been attached to the bench which reads “Happy to Chat Bench. Sit here if you don’t mind someone stopping to say hello”. This scheme was first launched in the UK to help combat loneliness amongst
older people and has been adopted globally. We hope the Happy to Chat Bench appeals to all ages. Please let us know if there are any other benches in the town that would be suitable. Our thanks to Keith Hawkins who produced the sign. We have received positive feedback on this initiative, thank you; we are glad that you feel as enthusiastic about the scheme as we do.
Hedge and tree planting Armed with spades, gloves and plenty of enthusiasm, volunteers from the local community and from Year 10 at Perin’s, have been busy helping us replant an old hedgerow in Arlebury Park. A big thank you to all who got involved for your hard work and giving up your time to help us! The restoration of the hedge will provide an important habitat for small mammals, birds and plant life and a “green corridor”
between other habitats in the park and will include a mix of spindle, hornbeam, gelder rose, sloe and crab apple. Please use the formal gaps in the hedge to walk through and encourage others to do so. A recent article by Andy Lester in the Hampshire Chronicle, encouraged residents to request their Council plants at least one tree this year. New Alresford Town Council will be planting ten – including a new disease resistant elm, walnut, wild cherry and alder - in the northern corner of Arlebury Park. The aim is to provide less formal, more natural open spaces; together with areas of longer grass on the park edges to encourage wildflowers. The grass cutting and grounds maintenance will be undertaken by our newly appointed contractor Scandor. Wildflower meadows, grassland, trees and hedges are all important in carbon dioxide absorption. Interestingly, 10 metres of hedgerow is as effective at removing carbon from the atmosphere as one tree.
Play area The play area at Stratton Bates has been selected as the first play area to benefit from
redevelopment. In order to start gathering views on what the community want from the space, we held workshops at Sun Hill Infants and Junior School, and at Perins – to find out how children would design their ideal playground and what is most important to them. An enthusiastic mix of imagination, play dough and match sticks was involved. It was a brilliant and thoughtprovoking day, and our thanks to all the pupils and staff who made it such an enjoyable experience. The next phase of the consultation will include workshops with residents from Makins Court and those who live directly around the park. The wider public will be invited to an exhibition to put forward their views and discuss concept designs, later in the Spring. We will keep you updated.

We, ARFC are coming to the business end of the season with both sides battling valliantly against injuries, Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis.(Still surprised Dennis let Ciara come first). The Firsts, with seven games remaining sit 9th in The Hampshire Premiership. The 2's are flying high in Merit 3 league despite too many sides fielding inappropriate sides against us. Surely club sport is about playing sides at the same level and not trying to take an unfair advantage of that clubs higher teams that don't have a fixture on that weekend. However, the 2's in particular have met these challenges head on and have never disgraced themselves. In fact, the opposite. Well done boys. Our big news this month is we are delighted to announce the start of our first womens team. Mainly contributed by Winchester Uni students, this is something we have been so keen to incorporate and welcome into the club. Any ladies who wish to get away from their husbands or boyfriends on a Sunday afternoon, we would welcome you to sign up! Below are our March fixtures, kick offs 3pm. Your support, through all this weather is so so appreciated. We really thank you. ALRESFORD ROTARY
On Thursday March 19th at 7.30pm the Alresford Society is hosting a public meeting in St. John’s Church with Speakers: Kim Boog, Barn Owl Project Hampshire and Tim Norriss, Hampshire Swifts Our speakers will give visual presentations of the lives of these beautiful birds, tell us of the risks they face, and explain how people in Alresford can help to support their preservation. As you will read below, we can help these birds through the excellent work the Hampshire projects are doing. You may also decide to provide a nesting box yourself - our speakers will tell you about siting these and how to keep watch on them. Kim writes: How lucky we feel when we spot the iconic Barn Owl gliding over meadows around Alresford. The trouble is, how long will we continue to have this privilege? With numbers fluctuating UK wide, we ask why this beautiful bird falls firmly into the category of decline. Each year, as young broods disperse from their breeding site, less than 30% make it to their first spring. We need to put measures in place to preserve our wild meadows, even increase them if we are to have a chance at a healthy population of Barn Owls. BOPH has set about getting armed with a permit and some professionals, to help educate and encourage preservation of a healthy Barn Owl population around the Alresford area. The needs of our Barn Owls are perhaps far less complex than you might imagine.Yet installing hundreds more nest boxes is not the only answer, as without enough habitat to provide food, the species cannot increase. The Barn Owl is one of 5 different species of owl living in the UK. We want to grow awareness and make room for a more secure future for these and many other species of our British Raptors. Tim writes: Swifts are a bird in trouble. They need gaps and holes in buildings to nest so the loss of potential nesting sites caused by re-roofing and the replacement of timber soffits and fascias with plastic is inevitably having a major impact and their UK breeding population has declined by about 50% in the last 20 years. It is still declining at 5% per annum. Modern construction methods, with the wholly desirable aim of reducing heat loss and carbon emissions during the cooler months, means that new-build homes provide few if any nesting opportunities.
Where do the profits from Alresford Rotary’s annual events such as the spring quiz, the 10K run, the November bonfire night and the sale of Christmas trees go? For the past two years one beneficiary of Alresford Rotary’s fund raising activities has been Lend with Care, a microfinance lending website from the development charity Care International UK. Launched in 2010, it allows individuals and groups such as Alresford Rotary to make small loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries, and help them work their way out of poverty. Microfinance is usually aimed at economically active poor and lowincome people who have limited or no access to the services provided by formal financial intermediaries such as banks. Since there are so few salaried work opportunities, they are usually self-employed “micro entrepreneurs” often working from home. Typically, they operate small businesses such as grocery shops, market stalls, car repair, carpentry or other workshops, and in rural areas they tend to focus on food processing, agriculture and raising livestock and poultry. Around twothirds of microfinance clients worldwide are women. Lend with Care works with a number of partner microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the countries in which it operates. If the MFI is happy with an entrepreneur's idea or business plan, it approves the proposal and provides the initial loan requested. It also helps the entrepreneur construct its profile for lendwithcare.org. Lenders can browse the list of entrepreneurs on the website, read about their businesses, see the value of the loan they have requested, the percentage of the loan already provided by other lenders, and then choose an entrepreneur to lend to. Once the entrepreneur's loan is fully funded, the money is transferred to the MFI to replace the initial loan already paid out to the entrepreneur. During this process lenders receive progress updates regarding the entrepreneur's progress. The entrepreneur gradually pays back their loan according to a repayment schedule. The MFI transfers these repayments to CARE International who then credits the payment into lenders' lendwithcare.org accounts. Lenders can then either withdraw their money or can use the credit to provide a loan to another entrepreneur.
Swifts feed on airborne insects and spiders which are only available in warm weather so swifts can only live in the UK for a short period each year. They come here to nest and raise their young before returning to southern Africa for the remainder of the year.
With a relatively small low risk investment support can be provided to change lives. In two years Alresford Rotary has made 310 loans to individuals in Peru, Malawi, the Philippines, Ecuador, Rwanda, Zambia and elsewhere. Because the monies loaned are repaid and then loaned again the £2500 put into the scheme to date by Alresford Rotary (as of January 2020) equates to £8940 of loans made, of which £6785 has been repaid.Your generosity in supporting Rotary’s fund raising events in the community has made this possible – thank you for helping Alresford Rotary to change lives.
In Alresford there is still a good population in the centre of the town and we have already put up more than 50 swift boxes, but many more need to be erected if we are to reverse the decline. Our boxes are quite cheap and we will even put them up for you. Do come and learn more about swifts and how you can help them.
For Alresford Rotary to continue to run community events and to help change lives in this country and abroad it requires your support. If you are interested in joining Rotary (male or female, young or old) or in helping to run our local activities please let us know! James Pinniger (wjrp@hotmail.co.uk / 01962 738788)

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Phone & Communication Scams Phone fraud, or more generally communications fraud, is the use of telecommunications products or services with the intention of illegally acquiring money from, or failing to pay, members of the public who are customers of these products. Many operators have increased measures to minimize fraud and reduce losses, however there are still many innocent victims of this ever growing criminal activity. There are 5 main types of fraud and these are: • Fraud against users by phone companies • Fraud against users by phone companies • Fraud against customers by third parties • Fraud by phone companies against one another • Fraud against the phone company by users • Frauds against the phone company by third parties We will concentrate on the fraud against customers by third parties, i.e. the scams fraudsters will use. These currently include: 1. Technical Support Someone calls you claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, or another tech company and ask if you’ve had computer problems or tell you they have received ‘error’ messages from your
THE CINNAMON TRUST
computer/phone system requiring action. They then request you to allow them access to your system, via some simple steps they will explain to you. Unfortunately the scammers won’t fix the problem and will make it worse by installing malware/viruses or extracting personal financial data to steal from you. 2. Bank/Credit Card Someone calls or messages claiming they are from your Bank or Card Fraud Dept. They then give you a number to call back or, if you answer the call, they will try to verify your identity by asking various questions. Never give out any account or card details unless you have made the call and never call a number given to you. Always call the number off your Bank website, or on the reverse of your Card. 3. One Ring Ever rush to answer your phone, only to realise the caller hung up after one ring? Don’t let curiosity get the better of you and call back. Calling back verifies your number belongs to a real person, plus shows you’re the type of person who will return a call from an unknown number. The call back could cost you, even if they don’t ask for anything as you might be calling an expensive ‘charge’ line. Let any unknown number go straight to voicemail. If it’s important, the caller will leave a message. There are a number of variations with the above scams such as fraudsters offering you a prize and asking you to either call a given number or respond by pressing ‘1’ on your phone. Likewise stating your ‘Internet’ or ‘Amazon Prime’ subscription payment will renew next month and press ‘1’ to cancel. Remember once these fraudsters know your number is ‘live’ they will They can also offer a national fostering service for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited. If your dog is missing out on a daily walk, or you are looking for fostering, short or long term, and are an elderly or terminally ill owner who would like some help please contact as below.
The National Charity for the elderly, the terminally ill and their pets. The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They work in partnership with owners to overcome any difficulties that may arise. A national network of over 15,000 community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner.
We are also urgently looking for Volunteers in the area for short term foster homes, whilst the owner is in hospital and to walk their pet too. It doesn’t have to be every day, once a week would be brilliant and you would be able to make a difference to the lives of elderly people and their pets. MOTORING
WHAT’S THE FUTURE OF MOTORING IN THE UK? There’s a lot of uncertainty about how we will get around in years to come. With global warming we have to stop burning fossil fuels, but what are the alternatives as so many of us have become used to being able to go where we want, when we want. Over the last few decades the manufacturers have effectively been kicking the can down the road by making existing engines cleaner and more economical, though with much expensive electronic complication. They are now faced with having to phase out both petrol and diesel in the near future. At present there are several different technologies being investigated. They are:
1. Batteries All electric powered by batteries. In the near future, given improvements in battery technology, this is where most manufacturers are putting their investment and effort. Battery cars will undoubtedly be able to travel further than at present but the time taken to recharge will still be a problem for long distance travel. For the average person the cost of electric vehicles will stop them being able to afford a new one, unless the government grant is considerably increased. On the second hand market the main question I am asked when selling electric cars is about battery life and the cost of replacement, however most manufacturers are offering an eight year guarantee on their batteries. Another possibility is to have a small petrol engine for electricity generation to extend the range, albeit with less power available . BUT, where will the raw materials for battery production come from and how damaging to the environment is their sourcing and manufacture?
2. Hydrogen fuel cells These pass hydrogen and oxygen through a catalyst to produce electricity. Generally they have high efficiency and can be refuelled quickly, but hydrogen is expensive to produce through electrolysis and there are very few hydrogen filling stations around. Again the cars are expensive to buy.
3. Hydrogen internal combustion This really doesn’t need much research as liquefied hydrogen gas just replaces petrol as fuel. The engine is much simpler as it doesn’t require as many anti-pollution gizmos as petrol or diesel ones do. The main gas coming out of the exhaust is steam (water). The cars are therefore much more affordable and cleaner to use than those which run on fossil fuels. The problem, however, is the same as that with hydrogen fuel cells: the fuel is too expensive to make by electrolysis. As a simple person, what I don’t understand - with such an abundant and accessible raw material available (water) - is why the governments and big businesses aren't investing time and money in trying to split water into its constituent components, hydrogen and oxygen, in an economical way. If they could, this would solve both energy supply and pollution at the same time. Is there still too much money to be made by the oil companies from fossil fuels? I’m sure in the future that when it becomes essential, rather than just desirable, someone will find a way to save the planet and still keep us mobile. THE WAYNFLETE SINGERS ANNOUNCE THEIR ‘GOLDEN’ 50TH YEAR WITH SPONSORSHIP DEAL FROM JM FINN
The Waynflete Singers have launched their Golden 50th anniversary programme for the 2020 concert season, together with a sponsorship deal for the year with investment managers JM Finn, who have recently opened offices in Winchester. Choir Chairman Howard Nattrass, announcing the sponsorship at a reception with JM Finn, said ‘We are delighted to announce this sponsorship deal with JM Finn, at a time when classical music is increasingly squeezed for funds.Their support will enable the Choir to pursue its mission of offering performances of the highest musical quality, and help us to put on some outstanding concerts in this our 50th anniversary year’. A celebratory gala concert in Winchester Cathedral will kick off the anniversary year on 28th March, with a programme that includes works the choir have sung during their 50-year history, including Parry’s ‘I was Glad’ and ‘Blest Pair of Sirens’.The gala concert will also see the choir unveil a new commission from world-renowned baritone Roderick Williams, who will also be performing in Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs on the evening.
GODOLPHIN STUDENTS AND STAFF TAKE PART IN THE THE BIG SLEEP TO RAISE FUNDS FOR ALABARE
This special event will be accompanied by the London Mozart Players, and conducted by the choir’s current and two former Directors of Music, Andrew Lumsden, David Hill, and Martin Neary, all of whom will be well known to Winchester’s music lovers. Much of the music has a local connection, featuring composers such as John Tavener, SS Wesley and Herbert Howells. The 28th March also happens to be the occasion of conductor Martin Neary’s 80th birthday. The choir will to be singing Tavener’s Svyati under his baton, with his professional cellist daughter Alice Neary in accompaniment. JM Finn’s Investment Director, Simon Tufnell commented: “We are delighted to be able to support such a well-established choir in this their anniversary year and are looking forward to their high-quality performances.” The 50th year will also see performances by the Waynflete Singers in the Cathedral of Beethoven’s grand work Missa Solemnis on 27th June, in this 250th year of his birth, and at Christmas, the perennial favourite Handel’s Messiah on 5th December. Tickets for the Gala Concert are on sale from the Cathedral Box Office (01962 857275), www.tickets.winchester-cathedral.org.uk, priced 15.00 £49.00 (2 for 1 offer on £22.50) plus booking fee. EDUCATION are all popular A level subjects. Which doesn’t mean that girls have to study science at St Swithun’s, but simply that if they do that is normal and if they don’t that is also normal.
OOL BE THE
Research reveals that girls also adapt their behaviour outside the classroom to societal expectations. For example, they come to believe that they shouldn’t apply for jobs unless they match 100% of the job description, but girls educated in single-sex schools are more likely to be risk takers in educational and professional terms. At St Swithun’s, girls grow up to be who they want to be without being subjected to tired stereotypes about what girls should and shouldn’t do.
There is some evidence that suggests that girls get better academic results in a single-sex environment, but for me by far the most compelling advantage of a girls’ school is simply that in a single sex environment it is easier to be yourself. Girls can choose how to behave without having to consider whether it is appropriately feminine. It is no accident that girls’ schools have higher percentages of girls studying subjects considered ‘male’ such as maths or science. Indeed, in some co-ed schools not a single girl studies physics A level. At St Swithun’s, maths and science
