JANUARY SALE 40% OFF We moved into our house in Broughton and although the kitchen was serviceable its layout did not work for us. We looked at the usual suspects and found Happy Kitchens advertising in a local magazine. We invited several kitchen companies and Happy Kitchens in to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing, he also advised us about disposing of our existing kitchen and where we could get the best deal on our new kitchen appliances. The kitchen is fabulous, the fitting team are fantastic, well skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. I would happily recommend the Happy Kitchen team to anyone. Mr Hensman

Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

FEATURE

TALES FROM A HAMPSHIRE HEDGEROW As the days lengthen, the cold strengthens’ according to the old country maxim, but even now there are signs of spring, and one of the first to appear are the fluffy yellow catkins of the hazel. The catkins are the male flowers, but if you look closely it is possible to see little clusters of red threads which are the female flowers and flowering early gives hazel an important advantage as the leaves don’t interfere with the pollen flow. On the downs, gorse is also in flower with its luminous yellow flowers smelling of coconut. In the New Forest, where it is called ‘furze’, it has been used as a fuel, a medicine and is still an important winter food source for the ponies. Within the hedges, the holly, sloe and hawthorn berries have all been stripped bare but January is when ivy berries blacken and ripen providing much needed sustenance. According to the RSPB, ivy berries contain as many calories as a Mars bar and are greedily demolished by blackbirds. In churchyards and along drove roads, red juicy, but poisonous, yew berries are being consumed by thrushes and their exotic looking cousins from Scandinavia – fieldfares and waxwings. Known locally as ‘Hampshire Weed’, the yew sows itself liberally and, if undisturbed, can live for thousands of years. (Some churchyard yews are older than the church they stand alongside). The dense dark foliage can form wild anarchic shapes sometimes meeting over roads to form yew tunnels like the one near Farley Mount near Winchester. At the foot of the hedge, among the crumbling ruins of last year’s hogweed, the first snowdrops are making their appearance and by the end of the month we will see the early primroses and the bright yellow flowers of the lesser celandine. The scarlet goblet shaped elf cup fungi, like viscous jam tarts, are often in evidence too. The red stems of wild dogwood and golden willow set the river banks alight and higher up in the tall poplars, pom poms of pearly mistletoe are

easy to spot in the leafless trees. Grown from seed, one per berry, they are spread by mistle thrushes and blackcaps wiping their beak on the branch. As the cold grips the countryside, this is a time for survival. Herons will occasionally resort to eating moles and coots, jays will dig down through the snow for acorns using landmarks above as a guide and squirrels share nests to keep warm. Apart from the territorial outbursts of robins and wrens, many birds are mute but as February beckons you will hear the repeated phrases of the song thrush as it rehearses its repertoire. In open farmland, enormous roosts of corvids continue their raucous commentary. Rooks and jackdaws join forces in the winter to share information about food sources separating again in February for the breeding season. At night, the tawny owl is active particularly during the full moon. Young birds are reaching maturity and looking for new homes while older birds are fighting on to their patch. Duets may be heard with the female making a ke-witt sound and the male answering with a distinctive hoo-hoo. All along the country lanes, the hedgerows are crowned with the white fluffy seed heads of Old Man’s Beard or Traveller’s Joy. This wild clematis thrives in Hampshire’s chalky soils and the ribbed stalks snake their way through anything in their path. They are the ‘tangled bine stems’ of Thomas Hardy’s famous new year poem, The Darkling Thrush, first published on the 29th December 1900. The Ninth New Year Plant Hunt, organised by the Botanical Society of Great Britain will take place from 1st-4th January 2020. Send any sightings to www.bsbi.org/new-year-plant-hunt Vicky Liddell

Based at the Isle of Wight Zoo, The Wildheart Trust is appealing for businesses to support its big cat and exotic animal rescue mission through sponsorship opportunities. Corporate sponsorship and donations from local business can help the charity secure a long-term future for the zoo and enable it to fulfil its ambitions; to engage and empower people into taking positive action as well as providing a life-long, loving home to rescued big cats and other animal residents.

The Trust is currently seeking support to fit-out new living quarters for its two most recently rescued residents - lion brothers Vigo and Kumba. While construction firm Willmott Dixon has donated its skills and labour to create the new building, there are still many items needed to turn int into a fully functioning home which is fit for the two lion kings. Businesses wishing to help can choose something specific from a list of special equipment or make general donations that will contribute to ongoing care such as food and veterinary treatment. Items on the list range from a £50 feeding bowl and £200 extractor fan up to a 1,500 communal cat slide and £18,000 annual big cats vet bill. Caring for all the Trust’s special creatures does not come cheap but it says that with a combination of day visitors to the zoo and corporate sponsors it can continue its priceless work. In return for their support, company’s gifting £500 or more will receive a package of benefits such as a plaque at the animal’s enclosure and day tickets for staff or clients. There are also bronze, silver and gold corporate membership packages priced at £1,000, £3,000 and £5000 respectively. Each of these has a specially tailored package of benefits and rewards including sponsorship banners at the zoo, certificates, entrance tickets,VIP experiences and inclusion in publicity materials and promotional activities such as social media and PR. Speaking about the importance of business donations, The Wildheart Trust’s CEO Veronica Chrisp said: “Corporate donations and sponsorship are great ways for local businesses to get involved with our cause and embrace the spirit of social responsibility. From a one-person business taking on a sponsored challenge to raise money all the way up to a large firm taking a Gold sponsorship package, every penny counts. We are incredibly grateful for any generous gifts we receive and work hard to make sure the money makes a real difference to our cause.” Anyone wishing to find out more about the lions’ wish list for their new home or the corporate sponsorship packages can call the zoo on 01983 403883. ENTERTAINMENT PROFESSIONAL of professional comedy actors, creating a portion of chaos and mayhem through the twists and turns of the plot, that will include local councillor David Horton intent on vetting all new potential residents to the village. Sarah Waddington, Sales Manager of the Holiday Inn Winchester commented: “We have had a tremendous response to the various Comedy Dinner Shows that we have put on in recent years. We are always looking to give our hotel visitors and guests new experiences and it is good to be presenting comedy and drama, as well as our music events. The Dinner Shows create a friendly party atmosphere, ideal for couples as well as small or large groups.”

The four star Holiday Inn Winchester will launch its 2020 Entertainments Programme with a visit from ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ as part of the hotel’s series of Comedy Dinner Shows that combine fun, laughter, drama and a delicious three course dinner, prepared by the hotel’s AA Rosette Award winning team on Friday 7th February.

The Spitfire Sisters The hotel will then be presenting the enduringly popular Spitfire Sisters on Friday 6th March. This internationally acclaimed trio of talented singers will entertain guests to an evening of music from the 1940’s to modern songs with a vintage twist. There will also be the opportunity to dance to their sophisticated style of entertainment, combined with a three course dinner, with tickets priced at £45. The joy of music brought the ‘Spitfire Sisters’ together in 2011 when they started learning the harmonies of The Andrews Sisters, and they have since carried that style across other genres, evolving to write and perform their own songs.

Actors play the parts of Vicar Geraldine and all the other loveable and eccentric Dibley characters in this hilarious tribute show, that is part scripted and part improvised by the actors, whilst the audience enjoy their three course dinner. Tickets to the show are £35 per head and include a three course dinner.

“The enormous success we have had with our entertainment programme has been due to selecting only the very best artists and combining that with exceptional quality food, with dinner and ticket to the show offering great value,” concluded Sarah Waddington.

Based on the popular TV comedy ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ - with Geraldine, Alice, Hugo, Owen, Frank and Jim played by a cast

A GREAT TONIC FOR LIFE! As I am writing this we are in the midst of the turmoil of our looming general election in our country and who knows where we find ourselves by the time you read this. This is life in all its glory! Challenges on a local scale, on a global scale and in our very own personal life. Yes, it does seem particularly tumultuous at the moment and a lot of us are facing challenges on a personal level at the same time. When this happens, we feel we have to drop everything and just focus on the challenge at hand – putting all our energy into it. And we tend to drop the things we enjoy…somehow feeling indulgent if we continued.Yet, where does this energy supply come from? How come we feel so easily depleted of our energy?

This energy supply has to come from somewhere. There is limitless supply of energy around us – Life Energy. How are we able to tap into it and keep our own energy supply up? Well, here is the great news: we have all the energy we need inside us already – it’s just that we allow life to deplete us and we cut off our energy supplies. So how are we able to wake up our energy inside us and replenish ourselves? Two of the most enjoyable ways we can do this is with Dancing & Yoga! Dancing & Yoga are a great Tonic for Life! Both dancing & Yoga stir up our own energy and replenish and nourish us from the inside. Dancing makes us feel good and makes us smile, our mind is able to switch off while we are dancing and we meet lovely people in the process. Just look at those celebrities on Strictly – dancing literally changed their life and they will 'keep on dancing'. And as for our 'Feelgood Yoga' – wow! You’ve got to experience it for yourself of what Yoga does for you and you will never look back! Yoga is meant to be simple and it is meant to be for everyone. My role as a Yoga Teacher is to 'empower you' to make Yoga part of your life and have an 'Energising Tool for Life' – as simple as that. Give yourself a 'Fresh Kick Start' in 2020, embrace Life in all its fullness and make Dancing & Yoga your great Tonic for Life. ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS Looking after yourselves and your children Coughs. Did you know? The common cold lasts about 10 days and a cough about 3 weeks. Most of them are caused by viruses and so cannot be treated with antibiotics. Most healthy adults will not need antibiotics if they do not appear particularly unwell. However frail, elderly patients, or adults with other medical conditions or medications which make them more susceptible to bacterial illness, may need to be assessed. We know that, when faced with an unwell child, parents often find it difficult to be sure whether the child needs to see a doctor, or whether they can be managed with sensible self-care at home. It can also be hard to judge how urgently a child might need to be seen. Should the child wait for an appointment? Should the child go to A and E? There are two excellent sources of help for parents who are concerned about their children with cough. One is the Healthier Together website http://www.what0-18.nhs.uk which covers a large range of childhood conditions. Another is the Caring for children with coughs website; http://child-cough.bristol.ac.uk which has been produced by Bristol University. We have an example of this leaflet on our “Looking after yourself and your children” noticeboard at the surgery. If you walk straight ahead on entering the surgery, you will see it on the left hand wall before dispensary. Welcome to our new receptionist A warm welcome to our new receptionist Beth who joined us at the beginning of December. We hope all the patients will offer her a warm Alresford welcome. Changes to the bowel screening process (FIT) What is FIT and why do we need it now? The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) is an improved screening test that works in a similar way to the current test by detecting hidden traces of blood in poo that could indicate bowel cancer or pre-cancerous growths known as polyps. People with an abnormal result or where blood is detected will be referred for a colonoscopy to either confirm a diagnosis of bowel cancer or receive the all clear. Here’s why FIT is better and more practical than the current screening test: • FIT has the potential to detect twice as many cancers and four times as many advanced polyps than the current test. This is important because the more cancers we can prevent or pick up early the more lives we will save. In fact, nearly everyone diagnosed at the earliest stage of bowel cancer will survive. • FIT measures the amount of blood present in poo while the current test can only tell you if blood is present or not. Also, unlike the current test, FIT only picks up human blood, so it won’t pick up blood that’s due to the foods we eat. This particular “feature” is what makes FIT more accurate. • The sensitivity of FIT to detect blood in poo can be adjusted to be more or less accurate. Adjusting the sensitivity threshold determines the number of people who will be referred for colonoscopy. The lower the threshold, the more sensitive the test is to blood and the more cancers and precancerous polyps are detected. However, this also means more people who have traces of blood in their poo but who don’t have bowel cancer will be referred for a colonoscopy, and we don’t have the workforce to cope.

• •

FIT can increase the uptake of screening: FIT is relatively easier to complete than the current test. It only requires people to collect one poo sample at home rather than three samples from three separate bowel movements, like the current test. Because of this FIT has been shown to increase the number of people participating in the bowel cancer screening programme by up to 10%, particularly for previous non-responders and first-timers, as well as hard to reach groups. How to get a screening kit: All men and women aged 60 to 74 who are registered with a GP in England are automatically sent a bowel cancer screening kit every 2 years.

Make sure your GP has your correct address so your kit is posted to the right place. If you're 75 or over, you can ask for a kit every 2 years by phoning the free bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60 60. NHS screening kits are not available for people under 60. www.alresfordsurgery.co.uk

COLOURFUL NEW LOOKS FOR 2020 Here at Pat Staples Interiors we are all about high quality, longevity and beautiful yet practical style. But that being said we like to incorporate a nod to what is currently in fashion too, and these are two trendy looks for 2020 that sit comfortably with us as designers of timeless interiors. The Painter’s Palette This is fun and free-spirited, a trend that takes inspiration from abstract expressionist artwork; bold geometrics, hand-drawn sketches and blocks of colour.Translating from canvas this look is often best represented flat such as on blinds, upholstery, cushions, rugs and wallpapers. Use in any room you want to make a statement, and be bold with your colour combinations too, think reds and blue, or golds and blacks. Go Global This trend is a diverse celebration of globally-inspired patterns and textures. Fuse decorative Ikats, faded paisleys, intricate Indian block prints, luxurious printed velvets, hand woven rugs, rope tassels and pompoms, as you can never have too much pattern with this look.Think rich tones such as spicey reds, earthy terracotta and natural ochre pigments. It’s this authentic colour palette that ensures your living spaces will feel warm and inviting.

FEATURE

KEEPING HAMPSHIRE MOVING WHATEVER THE WEATHER Hampshire Highways teams have been working hard through the year to make sure the county’s roads are ready for the expected wetter autumn and winter weather and this Autumn sees new equipment and technology put to work to help keep Hampshire moving. New equipment is being used by Hampshire Highways to speed up the pruning process of overgrown branches on the road network. Using battery powered chainsaws and working from a raised tractor platform, teams are pruning overgrown trees along key bus routes to prevent damage to vehicles and ensure passenger safety. In the past, highways teams have had to use a cherry picker to get to some of the higher branches, but the mobility of the new tractor and trailer system means there is no need for road closures. It means highways teams can make routes safe for buses while keeping disruption to drivers to a minimum. Hampshire is continuing to buck the national trend with more people taking the bus to get around. This helps congestion at busy times and, in turn, helps improve air quality. We’re doing what we can to continue to make bus travel an attractive and viable transport option for people who live and work in Hampshire, and this is just one of many ways we are helping to do this.

Going green

electric car charging points will be installed across Hampshire, along with charging infrastructure at our offices and depots. It is part of a programme to convert all our small vehicle fleet to electric vehicles, helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality across Hampshire, and forms part of our wider commitment to embed environmental considerations in all the work we do. These new highways vehicles are part of a total fleet of 28 Nissan leaf vehicles plus 7 Nissan e-NV200 Vans we have in use, with plans to increase this as current leases expire. All of these vehicles are supplied by Hampshire Transport Management who manage our transport fleet.

Reducing the incidence of flooding Heavy, intense rainfall can, as we all know, result in localised flooding, and trying to keep surface water off Hampshire's 5,500 miles of road surfaces is at the forefront of our highways preventive maintenance work throughout the year. Alongside our annual roadside ditch clearing programme and routine maintenance work on Hampshire’s gullies and catchpits, we’ve a programme of planned improvements to highways surface water drainage systems to make Hampshire’s road network more resilient to the effects of extreme weather. Each year, around £2 million is earmarked for maintaining 900 kilometres of highway drains and roadside gullies, but there are many gullies and watercourses on private land which can become blocked without regular maintenance. These blockages can lead to flooding on local roads after heavy rainfall.

The electric vehicles have a range of over 150 miles and will cost only 2p per mile to run, compared with the 13p cost per mile of the diesel vehicles they have replaced.

There is a lot we can all do to reduce the incidence of flooding in local communities and the County Council will do what it can on Highways drainage. Residents and landowners are being asked to make sure ditches and drains on their land are kept clear of leaves, vegetation and other debris so water can run freely through them, as this will complement our work and ensure that, collectively, we have done everything we can to reduce, or in many cases eliminate, the risk of local flooding.

Over the past decade, we’ve made over £30 million in carbon savings from our estate and operations. By the end of the year, 80 new

Alresford Men’s Shed The Alresford Men’s Shed was awarded £1500, towards their new building which will provide a vital social space and workshop. The aim of the Men’s Shed is sharing skills and undertaking individual or joint projects in a convivial environment. The Council and the local community have benefitted from their generosity and hard work. At the request of the Council they refurbished the display cabinet housing AE Wade’s map of Alresford, situated at the alleyway entrance to the St John’s Churchyard. DISCOVERING THE PAST THROUGH DEVELOPMENT Development-led archaeology has played a crucial role in expanding our understanding of the past, fostering new discoveries and research, says Anooshka Rawden, Cultural Heritage Lead for the South Downs National Park Authority. Crucially, it’s revealed a past that is far more populated, innovative and international than previously thought, and nurtured a strong sense of connectivity to place through community engagement. Planning policy took a trailblazing response to the challenges that had arisen in previous decades against a backdrop of post-war urban renewal. There had been considerable public appetite for the protection of archaeological discoveries since the 1950s, and the high profile redesign of an office block at Bankside to preserve the remains of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre in 1989 demonstrated the role of sensitive design in preserving the past. It also demonstrated how archaeologists and developers could work together to balance preservation and change, and culminated in the launch of Planning Policy Guidance 16 (PPG16) in 1990. In 2012, the National Planning Policy Framework took PPG16 and articulated its principles into the fundamentals of sustainable, sensitive development.

small development of two large houses in the village of Itchen Abbas demonstrates the value of early engagement. Consultation at an early stage in July 2009 revealed that the site lay immediately to the south of an area of burials first located during gas main trenching in a school playing field in 1984. Finds recorded at the time indicated a Late Roman-Early Saxon date for what was clearly a mixed rite (inhumation and cremation) cemetery located on the edge of a steep terrace cut into the hillslope and overlooking a river valley. The excavation of trial trenches in 2010 and 2011 revealed a Bronze Age pond barrow, a very rare form of burial monument, which likely became the focus of the Late Roman-Early Saxon cemetery. The pond barrow was located in the centre of the site and was approximately 30m in diameter. This new understanding of the significance of the buried archaeological remains present within the proposal site led to a reappraisal of the archaeological mitigation approach to be taken, with the site now considered to contain buried remains of national significance. The site owner worked closely with the archaeological advisor and Historic England (then English Heritage) to develop a scheme that would ensure the preservation of the significant archaeological remains, with new development to be located in areas of lesser significance within the site.

So what has development-led archaeology brought us? In 2017-18, 470,000 planning applications were submitted in England. Of these, only 21,700 had archaeological implication, representing 4.6 per cent. Of those applications that resulted in archaeological fieldwork (less than 2 per cent), we have benefitted from a wealth of discoveries.

Two inhumation burials were found, their graves having been cut into the natural chalk, with coffin nails indicating that they have been placed into coffins and suggesting a Roman date. Subsequent radio-carbon dating of the skeletons indicates they date to the late 4th century, with evidence of injury and joint disease.

In this newsletter, we plan to showcase discoveries made through the development-led process, shining a spotlight on the communities who have shaped the South Downs National Park.

Finally, a large linear feature previously identified as a lynchet (a type of earthwork formed through ploughing) was exposed and recognised as part of the Roman aqueduct supplying the town of Roman Winchester,Venta Belgarum.

Tracy Matthews, Archaeological Officer for Winchester City Council, writes about a development site that has uncovered a rare Bronze Age burial monument and a Roman aqueduct. A recently-completed

The archaeological discoveries at this site are undoubtedly of high importance, but this case study also demonstrates the value of early pre-application consultation and engagement.

RIVER HEALTH PART 3

BY GARRY HONEY

The rivers Itchen, Test and Meon are all Hampshire chalk stream rivers protected by the Wessex Chalk Stream & Rivers Trust (www.wcsrt.org.uk) which was established ten years ago as an environmental charity dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the fragile and globally important chalkbased ecosystems of rivers in the Wessex region. The trust also manages projects on the Hampshire Avon and Dorset Stour, thus covering all five Wessex rivers. Since 2012, the Trust co-hosts the Itchen & Test Catchment Partnership that has adopted a catchment based approach to resolving issues of habitat management, restoration and awareness among a diverse range of river users. WCSRT is part funded by the Environment Agency. Through that, the trust aims to be the local point of contact for questions on river management. The Wessex Chalk Stream and Rivers Trust is also key partner in a major scheme co-ordinated by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust (www.hiwwt.org.uk) with funding from the National Heritage Lottery Fund. This Watercress & Winterbourne Landscape Partnership scheme was given first stage approval for ÂŁ250,000 in January 2018, with second

phase approval of a further ÂŁ2m expected in March 2020. This Watercress & Winterbourne scheme is aimed at protecting the seven headwaters of the Test & Itchen rivers and their catchment areas on chalk downland. Together with a further 14 partners the trust will aim to address threats from pollution, drought, flooding and invasive species which endanger the fragile ecosystem. The heritage fund will expect to see positive outcomes with regarding to protection and awareness of the winterbournes as a catchment area. While this river headwaters landscape partnership scheme for Test and Itchen tributaries should receive funding as a heritage project, the work of the Wessex Chalk Stream and Rivers Trust continues with a number of other river conservation projects to address land use conflicts: increasing encroachment of the built environment and increasing demand for abstraction for water supply. These have to be funded by a variety of agencies and much of their time is spent securing project funding. This will of course become harder once the UK exits the EU and becomes ineligible for EU funding for environmental conservation. Both the Test and Itchen are protected as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Itchen was also assigned additional status as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the Habitats Directive which, although created within EU law is now embedded in UK National law. Both the Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive drive legislation in six year cycles and set standards of water quality in biological and not just chemical terms. Whatever you may think of Brussels red tape, one significant legacy will be the legislative backbone it has provided for protecting our rivers as a vital part of our heritage. For more information on how you can get involved please visit www.wcsrt.org.uk and www.hiwwt.org.uk and support these important trusts and their good work.

EPIPHANY CONCERT BY WINCHESTER CONSORT

Our coaches Cain Price, Ady Cobb, Gavin Janisch and Callum Macleod Ross, led by Scott Cleeve, enthuse and encourage the players who have responded with gusto. For the supporters and sponsors, the adult sides’ progress keeps us on the touchline every Saturday. The minis first couple of festivals this season have gone very well, although we have concerns over the pyramid of player numbers decreasing with increasing age, however; ARFC is always looking to recruit more parents as coaches. We go into 2020 as we do every New Year, aiming to be the best we can, leaving nothing on the pitch with no regrets. From all involved with ARFC, a hearty thank you. TRANSPORTS OF DE-LIGHT © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2019 “Six. I counted six on the way home!” He burst into the kitchen, throwing his car keys onto the table. Wading through spaniels he pecked her on the cheek. The dogs wagged their tails hopefully. ‘Six’ sounded promisingly like ‘Snacks’.. “Christmas trees. Still decorated. In windows. It’s the 7th of January! Does no-one understand that there’s a time and place for these things? And after 12th night – which incidentally is not the 12th but the 5th January – the decs should come down. All of them. Otherwise” he looked grim “the goblins will come…” Catching a glimpse of the little boy he must once have been, she suppressed a snigger, as, with gusto, he continued. “People don’t realise that if they don’t take them down, they must leave them up until Candlemas.” Blimey – he really was superstitious. Who knew? Although, now she thought about it, he did take the decorations down promptly each and every year. Most helpful in that department. “Perhaps put something in the Parish mag. You know, to warn people.” She was joking, but “Yes…” he pondered this a moment with a serious expression. “Good idea..” With renewed enthusiasm he resumed his diatribe. “And the fairy lights. People are leaving them on all year round. It’s like some dystopian Narnia out there – always Christmas but never Winter.” But she could sympathise with ‘people’. Such a faff to fix these lights all over the front of your house and up your trees. The neighbours had hired a cherry picker to illuminate the poplar in their garden a few years ago. And she wasn’t surprised that it never returned to take them down again – must have cost a fortune. To be fair though, they did switch them off between Christmases. “Then there’s the pub.” Oh, hello – he was off again. “They’ve got those blue LEDs – not so much Comfort & Joy, more Accident & Emergency. And they’re on all year round.” Truthfully though, she could totally identify with the reluctance to take down the tree, un-decorate the house and switch off the fairy lights. Calling ‘Time’ on Christmas was to stare into the face of cold, wet, dark and dismal weeks before Spring sprang, or was sprung, or whatever. Weeks devoid of the excuse to have a mince pie with breakfast. And cradle the tub of Celebrations each evening, binge watching box sets. And eat party food, pork products in pastry and turkey seven ways. They’d already had a stab at Veganuary. Sadly killed off two days in, it was bludgeoned to death with use-by-date pigs-in-blankets. She

WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM sighed deeply and surreptitiously undid the top button of her jeans. Back in the day, her favourite antidote to the January blues had been a trip to the travel agent. The sleet on the high street forgotten, she would move slowly along the shelves, selecting a magazine here and there. A delicious pick and mix of pure escapism. Lugging the dozen or so glossies home, she’d spread them out on the sitting room carpet and study them assiduously. She’d loved the pre-photoshop pictures of sunburned holidaymakers with angry-looking mosquito bites. And lusted after the out-of-reach all-inclusives with their trendy wristbands, cool activities and, that holiday nirvana for parents everywhere, kids clubs.. Happy days. And back then, the overindulgence of the festive season was rectified by the perpetual motion of juggling a job and running about after the children. Mourning the metabolism of her youth, she seized her tablet and contemplated the annual January conundrum: To join a gym or not to join a gym. That was the question. Whether it was sound of mind to take membership and strive to use it enough to make the price per visit less alarming. Mmnnn. “And on the subject of lights” Crikey, was he still at it? “why do people wait until they’ve driven around the corner, or over the brow of the hill, and dazzled you before dipping their headlamps? Twin spots burned into your retinas, you cling to your steering wheel and hope, both.” He announced rather dramatically as he stomped off to have a de-stressing soak, spaniels trailing up the stairs in his wake. Watching him go, his current obsession with all things illuminated sparked a light bulb moment. She’d take him to see the Northern lights – he’d actually look forward to that. The gym… probably not so much. He’d be guaranteed a Narnian-esque helping of snow and bobbing around in the hot springs would be a tonic too – the kind not partnered with copious amounts of gin, like in December. Her suspiciously omniscient tablet obliged with adverts for cutprice mini-breaks. Bursting into the bathroom, it must be said that her announcement “We’re going to Iceland!” didn’t initially send him into a transport of delight.. “Must I come? Could you manage on your own, if you didn’t buy too much?” he muttered plaintively, slumping further into his bathwater. Poor darling, she thought, as she smoothed his wet, furrowed brow and elaborated, he really does need to lighten up..

ALRESFORD MUSEUM

The Old Fire Station is the home of the Alresford and District Museum and is open on selected days through the spring and summer with the first open of 2020 being at Easter. The Engine House was renovated during 2017 and plans were put in place to create the Town’s Museum. At about the same time the possibility of the old Tichborne Park Fire Brigade Steamer being made available to the town was muted. This put our plans on hold for some months whilst the acquisition of the Steamer was investigated and it was finally agreed that it could be housed in the Old Fire Station here in Broad Street. That was in late July 2018 and it was moved to its new home on the 18 August 2018. During September 2018 the museum was opened on a number of days to give residents and others an early opportunity to see the Steamer in its new home. Over the winter of 2019 we worked to prepare displays for the formal opening of the Museum in the spring and there were a number of open days over the spring and summer when a large number of residents and visitors enjoyed the Old Steamer and displays related to the history of Alresford. This was still very much a temporary situation for over this winter we are removing the rear wall of the Engine House, refurbishing the area at the back and doubling the size of the Museum. This has all been done with the active support of Artworthy Framing who will continue to trade from The Old Fire Station.

The Old Fire Station Electrician wanted

We are currently in the process of doubling the size of the Museum in the Old Fire Station and we are looking for an electrician to donate their time to helping us sort out the electric wiring - probably over the weekend of the 8/9 February or the week following. We are also in need of a 30” flat screen TV, to display a slide-show of old pictures, if anybody has one that is redundant after a Christmas upgrade. The Museum project is entirely volunteer led and run and if there is anybody who wishes to help us with this exciting project please call Roy Gentry on 01962 773185 or email roy@alresford.org.

THE CURTIS MUSEUM & ALLEN GALLERY Allen Gallery Under Continental Skies - A selection of paintings by W H Allen inspired by his trips to France, Italy and Switzerland. W H Allen (1863–1943) is best known for his evocative watercolours, chalk and pencil sketches recording the landscapes, traditions and people of West Surrey and North-east Hampshire. But he also travelled widely on the Continent and the paintings in this exhibition draw on some of the finest examples of his work held in the collections of Hampshire Cultural Trust. Why not pop in to the Allen Gallery and banish those winter blues by taking time out to bask in the warm colours and vivid evocation of long lost summers created by a master landscape painter. 7 December to 1 February 2020 FREE Curtis Museum Saint John Henry Newman, who was canonised in October, spent some time with his family in Alton before he went to Oxford. He seems to have had mixed views of the place. “I wish no reference to be made, in any Memoir of me, to me or my family’s residence there” was one comment. However, in a letter to Canon Durst of Alton his recollections were of “beautiful walks and rides about it, and of the fine hop gardens.” The actual letter, found in the Hampshire Cultural Trust archives, is the centrepiece of a small exhibition on his life. The Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery, Alton (01420 82802) www.hampshireculturaltrust.org.uk Hours are Tues-Sat, Gallery 10.30 - 4.30, Museum 10 – 5

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

GODOLPHIN COMMUNITY EXPANDS BOARDING PROVISION Times are changing at Godolphin and traditional boarding is moving over to accommodate a fresh, more flexible offering in order to meet the demands of modern family life. Last Autumn, Cooper House at Godolphin opened its doors following an extensive refurbishment and now offers generous accommodation for fulltime, weekly, midweek and flexi-boarders, from years nine to 11. In addition, Godolphin’s Walters House also provides the same flexibility for junior boarders aged between seven and 13. From Sept 2020, Godolphin’s Sixth Form will be extending it’s boarding provision to accommodate another 50 weekly boarders as it re-opens Jerred House. This is as a result of the greater demand from current students and Godolphin also hopes to attract new Sixth Form students too. All students are welcome to stay at any time, (subject to availability) which is great for those involved in late evening or early morning clubs, and many have found this new ad hoc system invaluable in the run-up to their GCSEs and A-levels, when every minute counts and extra-curricular support is provided. A dedicated team of house staff maintain a constant presence in all the houses. Miranda Edouard, Head of Cooper House says “The Godolphin school experience is about far, far more than academic achievement: it is about building friendships and identifying talents, finding inspiration and becoming independent.” There’s no doubt that boarding prepares students to succeed in the real world and provides them with a stepping stone to life after school, now, thanks to Godolphin’s new boarding menu more and more girls can take advantage of these valuable life skills. For further information please contact Corinna Florence, Head of Admissions, 01722 430545, or alternatively book a visit online at www. godolphin.org

ALRESFORD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

You may have read in the report of our AGM in the November issue of the Forum that the statistics indicate that Alresford District is fortunate in being a relatively low crime area. However, that is not the same as saying that we don’t experience any crime, it’s just that there is not very much, so we need to remain watchful to keep it that way. We’re now in the depths of winter, when the days are cold and short and the nights are long and dark and some of us may be planning a break away, to view the Northern Lights, to ski, or to find a warm sun. If so, there’s a few simple things you can do to ensure you can enjoy your trip without worrying about the home you’ve left behind. • • • • • •

Tell your neighbours you are going away and consider letting a neighbour park on your driveway. Leave a key and your contact details with a trusted neighbour and ask them to move post away from your letterbox – important if you have a glass pane in your front door. Make sure your home looks occupied. Put some lights on a timer. You can also get timer switches for a radio or TV. Be careful about posting on Facebook and other social media that you’re away. Selfies posted from the beach are a sure-fire way to tell everyone you know that your house is empty! Make sure these posts can only be viewed by Friends and not Friends of Friends etc. If you’re a user of ‘smart’ devices in the home, these can offer a range of security facilities such as being able to remotely monitor security cameras in your home from your ‘smart’ phone, or give the illusion that your house is occupied by using realistic audio of daily activities such as cleaning, talking, laughing, working or preparing food, to deter potential intruders. Lock the front door and have a great time.

Living within a Neighbourhood Watch scheme area reduces the likelihood of being a burglary victim. Households living in Neighbourhood Watch areas experience 21% fewer burglaries than similar households. The generosity of residents purchasing the trees, which were supplied by David Payne. Late Night Shopping helped people to shop local – This is vital if the centre is to going to thrive. Festive notes were introduced from The Test Valley Band, whom the Chamber sponsor.

Alresford Chamber Project – Lighting up Alresford / Late night shopping evening 170 Christmas trees this year lit Alresford in December. We received great comments from residents, it’s great to know how much the project is appreciated. Thank you again to volunteers from Chamber members and The Alresford PIGS for all the hours which went into Lighting up our beautiful town.

Chamber Christmas Event Members had an excellent evening at Shapla a great opportunity for members to chat and digest the last 12 months of business and life in Alresford. Watch out for the events planned for 2020. Event boards are located at the station and outside the pharmacy, these will post key town events. A full list can be found on our events page ( https://www.alresfordchamber.co.uk/alresford/ AlresfordEvents/)

Our thanks also to the refreshments provided by the Sarah’s Sandwich shop, plus invaluable assistance from Prospect Fencing.

Any businesses wishing to participate, sponsor or generally assist with any of our projects please do email us.
