What a Waste Back to Normal?
Normal life ground to a halt in March this year and the world we unlock may never be quite the same again. Amidst all the misery of the pandemic, one of few benefits has been the improvement in air quality and seeing nature in the ascendant in places where it has always been pushed to the sidelines. While the Earth has had a bit of a respite from our frenetic activities, it is has been suggested that we would need to keep making the same reduction in carbon emissions year on year to avoid the dire predictions for the end of the century. Lock down has given us all pause for thought and many have wondered aloud whether we can reinvent ourselves in a better way. On the question of rubbish (see March Forum) it may seem like one step forward, two back. There are good reasons for the proliferation of plastic at the moment, aside from PPE; food outlets are trying to keep going through takeaways (more plastic) and packaging is a secondary consideration when you are grateful for any goods you can get.
An Opportunity This is a good time to look at our own household waste, not least because the cost of collecting, processing / recycling it costs Hampshire County Council £100,000,000 a year (excluding the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth). Money that will not be easy to find as the economy struggles to recover. Food, most of which was edible when thrown away, comprises 35% of household waste. Apart from the 22 million tonnes of carbon tied up in the food we throw out each year, it costs average households between £60 -£70 a year. For inspiration on how not to waste food see www.lovefoodhatewaste.com or hants.gov. uk/smartliving
Recycling at its best Composting vegetable waste from the
4
kitchen has to be the best form of recycling, removing large amounts from the waste stream while producing a valuable resource for the garden. For all the facts see www. recyclenow.com/
Compost If composting isn’t for you, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still aim to remove your household’s vegetable refuse from the waste stream. A wormery might fit the bill, producing more modest amounts of compost but with less work and space required. Do you have a near neighbour with a compost bin who would be glad to recycle your vegetable scraps? If you are a keen composter, perhaps you are missing some nearby sources of raw material. Create a system that works for you and get networking!
Zero Waste? If you follow all the advice for not wasting food and compost your vegetable waste, what about the rest of your rubbish? You may find that your household waste and recycling bins are still surprisingly full and mostly with packaging. Zero waste is nearly impossible to achieve for most of us, but a good objective to work towards.
The 3 Rs
There are a lot of useful R words to help you look more critically at everything you purchase. Reduce, reuse and recycle are good for starters, then you could add repair and refuse. Recycling may be better than throwing away, but still costs money and energy, so maybe ‘reduce’ applies here. Glass, tins, paper and plastic bottles can be recycled in Hampshire but not other kinds of plastic, even if they are technically recyclable. You could ask your local retailers (butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, bakers), who deserve to be supported after the sterling job they have done during lock down, if you can take your own reusable containers to help reduce single use plastics and packaging. Some packaging actually helps to reduce food waste, as in the case of shrink wrap cucumbers, but a lot is expendable and if we keep demanding, retailers will undoubtedly respond to the request for less unnecessary plastic. There are now plenty of more sustainable packaging alternatives for many toiletries and cleaning products. The plastic free journey is not totally straightforward however and the alternatives need to be carefully thought through. Glass containers are heavier to transport than plastic, so in some cases, perhaps the ‘reduce’ or ‘refuse’ words apply. Soap can replace shower gel in plastic bottles but you may wish to avoid unsustainable palm oil (which comes under many names), so labels will need to be studied. Before throwing away items which cannot be recycled, consider if they could be repaired or reused. This will keep them out of the waste stream for a bit longer, but where will they end up eventually? Something to bear in mind when indulging in retail therapy. Perhaps we could all just do with a bit less ‘stuff’ or at least make sure that what we buy is sustainable. Written by Cathy Swan

Kate Porter, Head of Sales
Kate Morton, Head of Lettings
Marishelle Butler, Head of Property Management
As a landlord, why have your property Fully Managed? So that you will know that your property is safety compliant, being checked regularly and that there is a point of contact for the tenant. In the past 5 years there have been over 150 new regulations affecting landlords and in some cases breaches of these regulations carry a criminal record or prison sentence. These regulations change quickly, and particularly during the current crisis. If your property is Fully Managed your property manager will be updating you and ensuring that all safety checks are complete including electrical, gas, legionella and smoke and carbon monoxide testing. Money is saved if systems and appliances are regularly serviced. If a property is Fully Managed then we would ensure that boilers and Agas are serviced, chimneys swept, oil tanks filled, septic tanks emptied, alarms serviced, plus more. A Fully Managed property will be inspected at regular intervals. You will know that the tenant is looking after the property and complying with the terms of the tenancy agreement. The landlord and tenant will be able to contact us at any time to report

A Tea Time Tale © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2020 WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM
T
hey turned the corner and the Georgian former vicarage came into view, just as dusk was gathering late on a November afternoon. “Your great aunt’s house is lovely “ he observed. “Yes – isn’t it” she agreed. The gardens were in their last autumn gasp of glory; Michaelmas daisies gave a splash of colour and the love-in-a-mist seed heads added decorative texture. The gardener leaned on his rake and puffed on his pipe. He touched the brim of his hat as they passed. A quintessential English scene. Auntie was a good host. Egg and cress sandwiches, sausage rolls, home-made scones with clotted cream and jam - and a cup of tea from the bone china service. Replete, they sat back and chatted about the weather; balmy for the time of year and the frosts were late in coming. Finally, she broached the subject of ‘the story’. “So Auntie – please will you tell it to him.” “Tell what to him?” Auntie feigned puzzlement. “Oh Auntie – you know, the family ghost story. You’ve got the biggest sceptic here to convert.” He rolled his eyes. “I’m afraid so. I just think that ghosts are the product of credulous people of a certain fanciful disposition. But I love a good yarn, so please continue.” Auntie showed a certain reluctance, but sighed and started to speak. “Our family hasn’t always been well off. I grew up in a keeper’s cottage in the woods. One afternoon we had a visit from some relatives of my mother that I had never met. We had tea. Not the scones and cream type, more fruit cake and bread and dripping, as I recall. Anyway, their daughter, who was about five years old, kept looking at the window. Probably about this time of year or maybe December, because it was dark outside already and only five o’clock or so – but she kept going up to the glass pane and looking out. “There’s someone outside” she said. “Well, we lived in the middle of the estate, so there shouldn’t have been anyone about. My father was instantly alert. Poachers, you see. He immediately went outside and looked around but couldn’t see anyone. When he came back in, the little girl pointed to the window again and said “But he’s just there – it’s a little boy. “ My mother went deathly pale, but my dad, he went out, this time with a lamp and we saw him appear at the window. “There’s no-one there Mum.” He reassured my mother when he returned.
12
But the girl, she persisted “The little boy, I think he wants to come in.” My mother said “What does he look like?” and the child replied “he’s got white hair.” My parents looked at each other and my mother put her hand over her mouth and left the room. When she came back in, she had a photograph which she showed to the young child. “Yes, him. But he’s gone away now.” I remember the little girl sounded sad. My parents ushered the other adults out into the kitchen where they had a whispered conversation, before they took their daughter and left. I badly wanted to see that picture, but it took a few days of pestering before my parents sat me down and explained. I’d had an older brother that I never knew about, that my parents never talked about. He’d died of diphtheria when I was just a baby - and the black and white photograph was of him. He had blonde hair.” Auntie finished her story. “But of course, it was all such a long time ago and your memory may be playing tricks. I’m afraid I still don’t believe in ghosts. It is, forgive me for saying, complete and utter nonsense. A good story ‘though and you do tell it well, Auntie. I expect you’ve had a lot of practice..” He was complimentary and patronising all at once. “Thank you for the wonderful tea and extra entertainment, but we’d better get going – miss the traffic.” She and her great Aunt exchanged knowing smiles and shrugged their shoulders. They kissed goodbye with promises not to leave it so long next time. As he bent to kiss her wrinkled cheek the old lady said to him “Oh, did you happen to see Morris, my gardener, on your way in?” He nodded. “Old boy raking the leaves. Hat and pipe?” “That’s him. He does like to materialise for visitors.” He frowned slightly “materialise – as in he only does any work when he’s got an audience? Perhaps you should get yourself a new gardener.” “Yes, well of course I had to.” Auntie winked at her great niece who smiled back. His frown had deepened “Had to?” Both women were laughing now, but he still didn’t get the joke. Auntie laid a gentle hand on his arm as she said quietly “Yes. You see, Morris has been dead these thirty years.” Footnote: One of these ghost stories is true.
LEISURE / ENTERTAINMENT Kershaw: The Lockdown Series
KERSHAW THE LOCKDOWN SERIES
When the lockdown was announced last March I saw it as an opportunity to concentrate on my painting. What could be better for an artist than a period of no distraction? I asked myself. I decided that I would paint every day and produce at least one painting each week as a record of my lockdown experience. Living in the Meon Valley is a privilege and finding inspiration for my work was a cinch. There are so many beautiful buildings just begging to be painted. I painted houses, churches and pubs and spoke to many of the occupants who told me something about the history of their abodes. Clearly, the buildings speak for themselves, and tell a story about the communities and how life and living conditions have changed over the years. As the weeks passed, I don't mind admitting, I became obsessive about painting these buildings and learned a lot about their construction and the materials used to build them. After producing more than 30 paintings in watercolour, oil and other media, I am looking forward to showing my work. All these works are included in The Lockdown Exhibition which runs from 23rd to 29th November, with a chance to see a preview on Instagram #valleyarthouse from 16th November. COMMUNITY Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club News Street collection in aid of those affected by the explosion in Beirut Last month we reported that we had held a suitably safe street collection in aid of those affected by the major explosion that shook Beirut in August. We can now announce that after the money raised was quarantined for 72 hours, we able to have a count up, and with several individual donations added in, we raised over £1,100, which has been sent to a Rotary Club in Beirut who are ideally suited to provide support where appropriate.
Fashion show in aid of The MS society As many of you will know from previous updates we have many fund raising events planned throughout the normal year, but this year is far from what can be called normal and subsequently the majority of these events have had to be cancelled or postponed. One of those major events planned for this year was our Fashion Show unfortunately scheduled for March just as we went into lockdown. This event was already sold out and we subsequently offered a refund for all tickets sold, mainly through Boutique Me in Bishop’s Waltham, who we thank for organising the refund of tickets.
Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - Proud to be of Service

Amazingly many people came forward and were keen that the money they had spent on the ticket should be taken as a donation and given to the MS society as planned. We were overwhelmed by the numbers with this view and we were able to donate around £2,000 to the MS society despite the Fashion Show not going ahead. We are extremely grateful to the generosity of those who donated their entry fee and we would like to reassure them that if possible, we will plan another Fashion Show in the future.

Rotary Together talks During lockdown with so many things being done at a distance via the internet etc. Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland have organised Tuesday evening talks on many subjects some of which need little introduction - Captain Tom : An inspiration to a country – to some less known, but equally inspirational stories - Keira gave me her heart and we changed UK organ donation law – The story of 10 year old Max Johnson’s heart transplant, which changed the landscape of organ donation in the UK, from an opt in to an opt out system. These talks can be watched live on the Rotary YouTube Channel at 19.05 on a Tuesday evening or you can catch up with them later on YouTube.
Fund raising Fund raising has become increasingly difficult in these times with our major events having to be cancelled, so again we have had to look at new ways of bringing funds in so that we can help those in need, especially at this time. To this end we have signed up with AmazonSmile, which is a way of making money for charities whilst making your internet purchases on Amazon. If you would like to support us, all you need to do is access the Amazon website using www. smile.amazon.co.uk , login / register as usual and choose the charity “Rotary Club Of Bishop's Waltham Charity Trust Fund “. Your purchases will cost the normal Amazon price, but a small percentage will be donated to the club’s charity fund.
Rotary meetings Our Rotary meeting have also gone online, which has enabled us to carry on seeing each other and planning ways of raising money and also how to make it go the furthest and having the most effect. We were delighted to have a

Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders (BWCFR) were honoured to have been presented this month with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service at a presentation by the LordLieutenant of Hampshire as a representative of Her Majesty The Queen.
Community First Responders are all volunteers who are trained and despatched by the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS). Besides emergencies, if deemed appropriate, they also attend non-injury falls and concerns for welfare incidents which, after consultation with a clinician in the control room, may prevent the attendance of an emergency frontline ambulance.

Most of the volunteers do not have medical backgrounds and they come from all walks of life and are all ages. They each contribute,
During the initial Covid crisis between April and July, this amazing group of volunteers covered a very impressive 98% of hours, attended a total of 250 callouts and arrived on scene before the ambulance in 95% of cases. And all of this done with only 5 volunteers (others in the group being unable to respond due to Covid restrictions during this period). EDUCATION
It’s who we are Please forgive my lack of modesty, but I think there are many great things about teachers. One of the most fantastic is the way we demonstrate the values we want children to have through our own day to day conduct setting the right example. “The most important thing is to be kind,” we say, and it’s certainly true that all good teachers endeavour to be understanding and empathetic in everything that they do. “Work hard, play hard and love life,” we stress andyou’ve guessed it- enter any school worth its salt and you’ll see adults and children striving hard to be the best that they can be, enjoying their social times together and appreciating the school environment both inside and outside. And yet, there’s one particular area of a school’s existence that has always puzzled me. When teachers ask pupils to do anything creative- be it fine art, music composition, photography, dramatic performance or imaginative writing- we quite correctly point out the joint importance of originality and purpose. “Make sure you answer the question,” we say, “but do it in a way that makes your work different to everyone else’s. Make sure your work stands out from the rest of the pack.” But there’s one very important document- a key publication written by teachers- that is often as far away from

specially produced to appeal to young people who are about to embark upon their school careers.
original and purposeful as it is possible to get. I’m talking about the school prospectus. Every school has one, but they are all surprisingly uniform and similar, sure to contain myriad depictions of shining, smiling pupils in immaculate uniform and games kit. There will probably be a photo of a recent musical production, a different picture of a child chewing a pencil as they grapple with their maths, and- oh yes- there will almost certainly be a candid image of elation as someone runs over a finishing line somewhere, arms outstretched as they take the tape. These are ubiquitous visions of ubiquitous children in ubiquitous settings. Similar form; nigh-on-identical substance. So when I recently took on the headship of St Swithun’s Prep School in Winchester, I wanted to do something that was both different and purposeful; as appealing and useful as possible for the widest possible audience. It struck me that our raison d’être is essentially not to do with parents, but is everything to do with children and I wanted our new prospectus to reflect that. So that is how Alice and Sophia go to St Swithun’s Prep has been created. It’s our new picture book,
Perfectly sized for little hands, it tells the story of two siblings- one in Reception, one in Year Five- and a typical day in their lives at St Swithun’s: the reader follows them round as they go to assembly, enjoy their lessons, have lunch and break, go swimming and enjoy their clubs and music. It’s a bright and lively introduction to school life, written to be useful for all preschoolers (and their parents) whichever school they are going to join. Of course, it has greatest relevance for those children who will eventually attend St Swithun’s: they’ll be able to recognise their teachers, and anticipate their class’s daily routines, from the text and illustrations in the book. Fundamentally, it’s who we are. I very much hope the book can be read and enjoyed by as many children as possible; copies are available free of charge on request to storybook@stswithuns.com. There’s also an audio version (complete with page turn signals provided by the instrumental teachers in our music department) waiting to be accessed from the school website; instructions are in the book. Please request a copy, read it with your child and keep it at home. If it helps them to make the transition to school when the time comes, I will have done what I set out to do. I hope you enjoy reading it! Jonathan Brough is the head of Prep School at St Swithun’s, Alresford Road, Winchester.
Our new picture storybook, all about starting school, is written especially for children. Request your free copy from storybook@stswithuns.com A leading independent school providing outstanding education for girls aged 4-11 with a co-ed nursery.

‘It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas’
It’s that time of year again, planning and preparing for that special day. The festive season is upon us. However, this year feels a little different. Many of us feeling apprehensive about what it will bring and if we can have the same celebrations as before, with traditions, togetherness and all that turkey! In these uncertain times, we must remember the true meaning of Christmas, the gift of giving. This doesn’t have to be hundreds of gifts under the tree. Giving your time and appreciation to people is exactly what we all need.

Matthew Archer, Partner MAA@macdonaldoates.co.uk
Here are a few Christmas Hacks to help prepare for a stress-free winter: Budget; Plan your spending. Money is always a worry this time of year and wanting to put on a big spread and share gifts with loved ones can often put a toll on the purse strings. Planning ahead and organising a budget for each thing will help you, think about bills, food and gifts, create a budget and stick to it. Fuel cards; Please remember to apply for your winter fuel card, if you haven’t already! You could be eligible to receive between £100 and £300 to help you pay your heating bills. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’. Please check with your local council for details. Weather watch; It’s always a good idea to be prepared for the changes in weather. Have supplies in case of days where you can’t get out, ensuring you have enough food and medicines to cover at least a few days. As the cold approaches it is also handy to keep a small container of sand or grit by your door to prevent any slipping when popping out. Be There; Make sure to check in on people around you and your loved ones. We may not all be able to share a dinner together
Ben Holden, Partner BTH@macdonaldoates.co.uk
but a visit or even a phone call can make all the difference. Think of people you know that may not be able to visit their families over this time, check in on them. Just a conversation to check they are all ok will lift spirits and let them know people are thinking of them. Food Banks; Here at Lapis, as we have done for many years, we will be donating to our local food banks, collecting as much as we can through the coming months to provide a wonderful Christmas donation to those in need. Also, don’t let things go to waste! if you feel you won’t use something or you feel you have too much of anything after the festivities are all over. Please remember food banks will be taking donations all through the year not just over Christmas. Our lives were different this year and often felt unsteady. We have lived through a time of history that made us cherish family, friends and community. This year let us not dwell on the hard times we faced but look forward to better things and be grateful for one another. Let us have another slice of turkey, a few more decorations, send out those cards (even if it’s been a while!) add extra twinkly lights, more cream on our pudding and most of all spread a bit more Christmas joy.

ITCHEN VALLEY BREWERY
Brewing Through The Storm
I
t’s 1997. Two friends are sat together, nursing mediocre beers. . We can do better than that, they told each other. Thus… Itchen Valley Brewery was born. 23 years and 30 million pints later, the brewery has become somewhat of a Hampshire icon. Famed for using local ingredients and being a regular guest ale in pubs far and wide, most of Hampshire’s beer lovers are familiar with the peppery Watercress Best or deliciously light Hampshire Rose, to name but two from IVB’s portfolio of more than half a dozen outstanding real ales.
‘Most of our marketing was organic through word of mouth, and the community came in their droves. When we faced closing, customers came with their empty milk bottles and growlers (a type of traditional beer container) to be filled and refilled; we’d never been busier, and we remain incredibly grateful for the support and loyalty of our local community, as well as its unerring appetite for our beer!
Spencer and Rob, Itchen Valley Brewery
And then the Pub Apocalypse (or, as some call it, the Coronavirus) hit. Like many microbrewers, 95% of IVB’s beer sales were to the hospitality industry prior to lockdown. So Rob Dupre, Head Brewer at IVB since 1999, joined newly appointed General Manager, Spencer Arnold, in creating a crisis action plan. Their swift adoption of a fresh business model was key to avoiding the costly and traumatic experience of pouring thousands of pints of precious beer down the drain. This proved to be a vital element, not only in their survival, but also in building their future once lockdown ended. ‘The biggest thing that struck us was that our priority wasn’t just the business in terms of profitability. Our customers on both sides of the bar have been at the heart of this brewery since its conception, and we didn’t want to lose sight of that. This was our time to champion positive morale in the area, and we fully embraced that by keeping our draught ale flowing throughout the whole of lockdown.’ Swiftly, Dupre and Arnold turned their hoppy hands to creating a new shopfront out of their existing tap room. With their structured pricing they were able to satisfy the needs of the wider community, as well as continue to supply the demands of some of Hampshire’s pubs which continued to trade during those dark days..
22
Due to demand we invested in a wide range of Lilley’s Cider in both bottle and draught form, a large selection of craft gins and other spirits from around the UK, and a fine wine collection provided by niche vintners. Even as lockdown has been easing, customers both old and new continue to visit us. Some for their regular few pints each week, whilst others purchase larger amounts in our beer boxes for leisurely weekends at home, family barbeques and birthday parties, as well as taking them on visits to distant relatives or even camping trips. It’s opened people’s eyes to visiting us, and how cost effective it can be to support their local brewery.’ Itchen Valley Brewery’s positioning continues to strengthen, as they have recently launched Trip Hazard, an American-style IPA with deliciously hoppy citrus undertones, and this marks their first venture into canned craft beer. They are also planning to reopen their brewery tours as restrictions ease, and are looking to launch a customer loyalty scheme soon, as a thank you to the community. Their takeaway real ale is available in 2, 4, 7, 18 or 36 pint containers and can be requested as bright to drink immediately or sedimented for longer lasting freshness. The store is welcoming, with human and dog treats available, as well as tasters for the indecisive! Feel free to call the brewery on 01962 735111 or visit them at Unit D, Prospect Commercial Park, Prospect Road, New Alresford, SO24 9QF, and check their social media channels for news, offers and updates, including opening hours. www.itchenvalleybrewery.com

WEEKLY EVENTS AT THE ROEBUCK

Pie and a drink for £15pp 4 till 8pm
I
t’s been a busy month here for us all at The Roebuck Inn, with the ‘Use it or lose it’ campaign that was written about us last month and in the Portsmouth news now well underway.
Dr Peter Rogers, pictured with Local MP Flick Drummond above, showed his loyal support and love for the pub to remain a pub when Flick came to visit us recently after hearing about our campaign. Whilst there is a property development application in place, everyone including Peter explained he wants the The Roebuck Inn to remain a pub, and Flick has promised us she will do all in her power her to help us keep it this way for as long as possible. It’s all down now to whether its financially viable. However, looking at the figures we are souring past where we were this time last month, so we are clearly doing something right! None of this would be possible without our amazing team, the kindness of Peter, or without the amazing customers we serve daily. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you! Waste Not with Hampshire Fare In a national first, Hampshire Fare have joined the fight against food waste as the first food group in the country to partner with food waste reduction app Too Good To Go. The partnership launches this week and provides Hampshire Fare with a new approach to one of its founding principles: a commitment to sustainability. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, says: “People are increasingly aware that food waste is a massive problem which needs addressing. This partnership is a decisive step towards helping our members tackle food waste issues. “Too Good To Go has an approach that is fun, functional, and provides an easy-to-use platform for both businesses and consumers. As the first county food group in the country to partner with Too Good To Go, I view this as a positive for Hampshire as well as Hampshire Fare members.
Hampshire Fare is encouraging food and drink businesses with regular food waste to register with the Too Good To Go app. At the end of the day the business places surplus food into ‘Magic Bags’ - so-called as contents do not require listing; they contain any surplus stock and are therefore a surprise. These Bags are listed on the Too Good To Go app for sale at a third of product cost. Nicola Luscombe continues: “The positive is that the app helps to reduce food waste and its impact on the environment. There are also benefits for businesses. Too Good To Go helps businesses to meet their sustainability objectives, cover costs, and provides opportunities to engage with the community and build relationships with new customers. It has been shown that 76% of Magic Bag buyers return as full paying customers. “‘Rescuing’ one Magic Bag every day from one store for a year is equivalent to preventing the amount of CO2e emitted from driving a car from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back.”
“This initiative is a win-win-win. It allows Hampshire Fare members to cover some food waste costs, the purchaser makes a good value buy, and edible food is not wasted. In addition, Hampshire Fare members who sign up will benefit by having the first year’s admin fee waived.”
Peter Williamson, owner of The Hog Shack, Eastleigh, adds: “As a new business start-up we launched with Too Good To Go as a way of raising awareness and gaining new customers. In addition, money raised via Too Good To Go can cover the cost of ingredients and saves good food from going to waste.
Nicola Luscombe, Hampshire Lead, Too Good To Go, says: “We are very excited to be launching our partnership with Hampshire Fare.
We include anything on our menu, such as cake, sausage rolls and salad pots, and the Magic Bags have been very popular.”
The Farm Shop Reinvented For 2020
Buckinghams Artisan Butchery - providing a range of meat for your Christmas feast
A family farm shop in the heart of the Meon Valley has relaunched after a £60,000 refurbishment, to provide more choice while cutting back on plastics and packaging to improve its environmental credentials. Westlands Farm Shop at Pricketts Hill, Wickham, has expanded into its former tea room to create space for a delicatessen, self-serve refill stations and more room for fruit and veg from the farm. Meon Valley MP Flick Drummond cut the ribbon to officially launch the refurbished farm shop - and then did some of her own shopping while she was visiting. Shoppers are encouraged to refill bottles from a fresh milk vending machine and fill their own containers with a wide range of dried foods and cereals from refill stations. Westlands has also teamed up with family-run company ‘Fill’ which supplies no-waste biodegradable and environmentally responsible cleaning products for people with their own containers. Westlands will continue to sell its own hand-reared free-range beef and lamb, along with locally sourced free-range game, pork, seasonal meats, fresh bread, cheese, wine and gifts. Home-grown strawberries and raspberries produced on the farm nine months of the year will still be available, too. In addition, a new entrance to the shop has been created as part of the works to enable social distancing and to keep the shopping environment as safe as it can be. This is the first between a major food group and Too Good To Go, and we are aiming to pioneer a ground-breaking and impactful partnership. Our mission is to save tens of thousands of meals from the bin and help to place Hampshire at the forefront of food waste initiatives.”

ANIMALS & PETS DoggyDooDah I’m Vicki and 6 years ago having decided to leave the corporate world established myself as a dog walker, I have 2 dogs of my own and they are the reason I choose this new path to walk. I very quickly realised the need for a day care facility over and above offering a 1 hour dog walk, many dogs wanted and some needed company for longer with their furry friends and of course human company too.
DoggyDooDah
Owners found that with their dogs out exercising and interacting all day they stopped some of their challenging behaviours, one dog ate her way though the carpet, doors, skirting boards and just about anything else she could get her teeth into! Two years on that naughty dog is still coming to day care and is an absolute dream now. Our day care facility is in the beautiful and rural area of Froxfield it is secure and secluded, no one watching your dogs who shouldn’t be. Numbers are limited as we don’t believe in packing the dogs in to earn money its totally about dogs being happy and safe. We can collect and drop off or you can come to us. Please feel free to get in touch to answer your questions and have a browse of our Facebook page to view the multitude of pictures to see what we get up to on a daily basis. vicki.hamlyn@gmail.com T: 07599 959925 FB: DoggyDooDah

DISCOVER WEST MEON AN AFTERNOON IN
West Meon later in 1851, the population peaked at 901, but later declined to 824 in the 1890's. Today the population of West Meon is around 750. Some notable people have resided in West Meon, the first being Thorold Rogers, who was an economist, historian and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1886. He deployed historical and statistical methods to analyse some of the key economic and social questions in Victorian England. Thom as Lor d As an advocate of free trade and social justice, he distinguished himself from others within the English Historical School of Economics.
West Meon High Street
I
f not for the occasional sound of a passing vehicle, I would not be able to tell that I am standing near one of Hampshire's main thoroughfares, the A32. I am meandering down the high street of the sleepy Meon Valley village that is West Meon, with nowhere particular to go.
It is afternoon, mid-October. A chill is in the air and the smell of wood smoke rising from the chimneys of the cosy-looking cottages is tantalising. I decide a hot drink would go down wonderfully, and spy a sign just ahead of me that says 'village shop & café'; perfect. I duck through the door of West Meon Village Shop, noting a homemade lemon drizzle on the counter for a reasonable price, and see an archway tucked away at the back leading to Cuppacheeno Café. After being seated at a table and ordering a pot of tea, I decide to look up the history of this charming village. A quick google and a plethora of information is returned. 'A History of West Meon' by Tim Lambert gives a comprehensive history of the village. I learn that in the 6th Century, a people called the Jutes, who hailed from Denmark, settled throughout the Meon Valley and as late as the 18th Century the Meon Valley was called 'Jutedene', meaning Jute Valley. The tribe who settled this valley were called 'Meon Wara' (wara meaning people or tribe), the namesake of the River Meon and West Meon. By 1086, in the Domesday Book, West Meon was called Menes. It had a large population for the time of around 200, with the village having a church and two mills where flour was produced for the villagers. During the English Civil War, skirmishes took place in West Meon prior to the battle of Cheriton Down on 29th March 1644. Not much else appears to have happened in the formative years of West Meon, at least nothing that was noted down that survived to the present day. In 1801, as West Meon entered the modern era in 1801 the village had become large for the time, with a population of 536. 50 years
32
In 1830 Thomas Lord, who founded Lord's Cricket Ground retired to West Meon, dying two years later on 13th January 1832 and being buried in the village, with village pub ‘The Thomas Lord’ being named after him. Before founding Lord's, he was a professional cricketer, playing first class cricket between 1787 and 1802. In 1903 the Meon Valley Railway opened, covering 22 miles from Alton to Fareham. The line closely followed the course of the River Meon, with a station at West Meon. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1955, and the line was completely closed in 1968. However, the Meon Valley Trail, popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders now occupies 11 miles of the old railway line between the West Meon Viaduct and Knowle Junction, complete with remains of old track-side huts, signal posts and telegraph lines. After being engrossed in researching the rich history of West Meon, I notice that an hour has passed, and decide to bid farewell to Cuppacheeno Café. On the way back through the village shop, I see the aforementioned lemon drizzle cake is still on the counter, and decide to buy it. On my way back to the car to return home, I see Buckingham's Artisan Butchery and think a nice, filling pie would be a fitting supper on a wintery day like today. However, upon entering my mind is instantly changed to one of a large choice of high quality, ovenready products: chicken shawarma in garlic Buckin gham’s Artisan yoghurt. I then notice some locally produced Butche ry Tunworth Soft Cheese in the deli counter, and purchase both items. So, I leave West Meon in a pleasant mood with my historical knowledge of the local area expanded and my taste buds tingling, in anticipation of supper. Written by James Curtis

COMMUNITY / MOTORING Meon Valley Heartstart Founder recognized in Queen’s Birthday Honours David Williamson, founder of Meon Valley Heartstart has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours, in recognition of long-standing service to the community of Bishop’s Waltham. David has always had a very strong sense of community spirit and since moving to Bishop’s Waltham in 1976 has been active in many aspects of local community life – including leading the St Peters Youth Group and being the leading force behind the transformation of The Stables, from a run- down disused building to a community facility complete with meeting rooms and kitchen. It was on his retirement from a distinguished 33 year career with the Ambulance Service in 2000 that David turned his efforts to community health initiatives. From his experience in the Ambulance Service he had seen firsthand the importance of early intervention in saving lives in emergency health situations. He was convinced that the widespread provision of free training to teach people the basics of emergency life saving techniques would make a real difference. So in 2000, he developed Meon Valley Heartstart, going live in 2001. Affiliated to the British Heart Foundation, Meon Valley Heartstart provides free education and training programmes on how to save lives and since its inception has trained over 25,000 people - members of the general public, community groups and school children of all ages. This is all done by volunteer effort. David is still very involved in the Scheme, coordinating its activities, doing hands on training and acting as the scheme’s Ambassador. Meon Valley Heart Start Chairman, Gary Ford in speaking about David’s award said “This recognition of David’s contribution to his local community is fantastic. We are delighted for him. His hard work,

determination and dedication to the Heartstart Scheme is without doubt what has made the scheme the success it is today. His passion, compassion, enthusiasm, drive and willingness to help anyone make David a stand out individual in the communities he serves”. David’s award is also recognition of the role he played in starting a Community First Responder’s Scheme in Bishop’s Waltham. Community First Responders are volunteers who are trained to attend emergency calls received by the ambulance service and provide care until the ambulance arrives. David was not only the original inspiration; he has led the scheme and acted as a responder himself.
On receiving the award David said “This is an enormous honour and I am very overwhelmed to be a recipient of an award on the Queen’s Birthday List. It came completely out of the blue, so much so that when I first received the notification, I initially thought it was a scam. But seriously the award, while given to me, is in recognition of the tremendous work that is done by teams of people. I couldn’t have made a difference here in Bishop’s Waltham without the fantastic teams of people ready to join in and work with me, so this is as much recognition for them as it is for me”.
over 85 years, generations of Hampshire children have been given the opportunity to enjoy our 14-acre seaside site. Many of the children are on their first trip away from home with school and make huge gains in resilience and self-confidence while learning about the world around them.” “Stubbington Study Centre offers hands-on, practical activities exploring nature and the environment, local culture, teambuilding and problem solving in such a way that learners of all abilities can succeed and have fun”, said President of the Rotary Club of Fareham Mike Hurley. “That is why I chose the Centre and I hope, with everyone’s help, we can make a positive difference.”
Each year the incoming Rotary President chooses a particular local charity or community initiative to support and, for 2020/21, President Mike Hurley selected the Stubbington Study Centre. If you live locally you probably know about this interesting outdoor education venue which is proven to have a significant and lasting impact on children’s learning and well-being. In the current times these experiences are needed even more and, with Rotary’s help, a number of children will be able to benefit who might not otherwise have been able to do go. James Scarborough, Head of Stubbington Study Centre, said “For

Fareham Shopping Centre is lending a hand too and Mike Taylor, Centre Manager, is providing the space for the Rotary Wishing Well which is now the Club’s collection point for Stubbington Study Centre. As Mike said “I am happy that we support them, knowing that funds raised will help children whose family situation may mean that they could not otherwise join their classmates.” The Rotary Club of Fareham will carry out fundraising for Stubbington Study Centre throughout Mike Hurley’s Presidential year and looks forward to the help of the generous people in the Fareham area to help with this community project.

COMMUNITY Work begins on creating new business units in Bishop’s Walthamunits in Bishop’s Waltham Work has now started on transforming the former depot site in Bishop’s Waltham into new business units for light industrial us. As part of Winchester City Council’s plans to support businesses in the southern parishes of the district, work to demolish the depot and create three new units started this month.
While the ongoing Covid-19 crisis has forced the Primrose Piano For those looking further ahead the planned “10th anniversary” festival will now be held from 9-12 September 2021 when guests will include clarinettist Michael Collins, guitarist Laura Snowden and BBC Young Musician Strings winner 2018, cellist Maxim Calver.
The units are part of the substantial investment on behalf of the council and will provide approx. 611 sq. m (6,576 sq. ft. ) of floor space. Winchester City Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Asset Management, Cllr Kelsie Learney said: “This is not an easy time for many businesses but we are doing all we can to help, and the fact we are continuing with this scheme showcases how important we feel it is. “Now work has begun, we are confident we can quickly let these units out and provide high quality space in one of our very popular market towns, and support local businesses.” The scheme was approved at the start of the year and is expected to be completed by Autumn 2021.

ranquil, enchanting, inspiring and a place to replenish the soul The South Downs has always had these special qualities, but the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to amplify the value of having a National Park on our doorstep. Whether you were walking in the forest, running along one of the many rights of way, or riding your horse through quiet country lanes, it was hard not to pinch yourself during these past few difficult months and remind yourself that we’re very lucky to live in this wondrously beautiful, sun-kissed corner of England. The importance of the South Downs National Park as a breathing space and part of a network of “natural health service” providers has been increasing in recent years.
and affects more than one in four of the population at any time. It’s a stark statistic that is being taken really seriously by National Parks and is driving us to develop new health and wellbeing strategies that complement our wonderful NHS. “The key thing is we know it does work. Being outside and active with natural sunlight releases serotonin and helps us to feel less stressed. Research shows that just being in nature can have a positive impact on mental and physical health and can enhance one’s mood.”
Tanquil, enchanting, inspiring and a place to replenish the soul
And, with mental health and wellness coming into sharper focus during the pandemic, the National Park Authority is working with a variety of partners to develop opportunities for people to benefit from connecting with the natural world. One of the priorities is to develop more “green prescribing” – working with health and social care providers to encourage people to make the most of the National Park. It could be as simple as a weekly walk in the National Park, or taking part in an arts class inspired by the picturesque landscape. A COVID-19 Recovery Fund was also launched earlier this year and a raft of community projects are set to be benefit from funding that will help connect communities to the National Park. “I think many people across all walks of life have found 2020 a difficult and stressful year as they’ve been balancing work, childcare and the effects of lockdown,” says Kate Drake, Health and Wellbeing Officer for the National Park, who was given the newly-created role last year. Kate Drake soaking up the amazing views at Truleigh Hill “We’ve certainly seen a renewed wave of interest in connecting with nature and getting out and just enjoying fresh air and a beautiful view. It’s been a real ‘pick-me-up’ for so many people and we’ve certainly seen that from the feedback we’ve had. “Mental illness accounts for 23 per cent of all ill-health in England

As part of the lottery-funded Heathlands Reunited project, the National Park recently helped to launch an educational sculpture trail, with seven stone carvings that tell the stories of the heritage and wildlife of the heaths. There’s a field cricket, sand lizard and even an uplifting quote from the poet Tennyson! Families and walkers are being encouraged to download the walk leaflet this autumn and explore the trail.
Kate adds: “We know people have enjoyed the benefits of the outdoors and we’re keen that they continue to reap the benefits during the autumn and winter. As the days shorten, it can be very easy to become inactive. With more people working from home, it’s become even more important to take breaks away from the screen or even take a 30-minute walk at lunchtime. “I would encourage people to start small. Perhaps go for an hour long gentle walk on a Saturday afternoon. Take notice of the beauty around you, look at the trees, listen to the birds and look up at the sky and soak up the views on the horizon. These are all simple, free things that nature has to offer us and you’ll be surprised by how uplifted you feel!” Kate says she’s really proud to be working for the National Park as it marks its 10th birthday this year. She adds: “We live in one of the busiest parts of the UK. So what makes the South Downs National Park so special for me is its ability to provide an outlet for escape, adventure, enjoyment, inspiration and reflection. And those stunning views never get boring!” www.southdowns.gov.uk

New Music Makers The New Music Makers choir have been remarkably busy during the summer of 2020, despite the Coronavirus pandemic. Weekly zoom meetings kept choir members in touch, with entertainment and chat rooms for everyone to get together as best they could socially in a challenging time. General knowledge and music quizzes proved a hit as did recitals and ditties organised by members. They have been back to full, online rehearsals for a while now, rehearsing ‘The Best of Bond ’medley and ‘Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat’. ‘Joseph’ was the first piece sung by the New Music Makers 50 years ago, so to sing it 50 years on is a wonderful tribute to this choir’s longevity! ‘With a little help from their friends’ many members mastered the technology to record as a ‘Virtual Choir’ and the result was the joy of seeing and hearing themselves singing together once more. Produced by both their very talented Musical Director Lillian Sediles and pianist Chris Allison, this is now on YouTube so do take a look! The beautiful song ‘You Raise Me Up’ which was voted as most popular by the members themselves, is currently being recorded and edited and will be on YouTube as well shortly for you all to enjoy. With Christmas on the horizon, the choir have begun rehearsing and working hard on perfecting harmonies in readiness for a ‘Virtual Christmas Concert’ more details to follow or visit our website: newmusicmakers.com

GOVERNMENT Flick was told by Martin Page, Director of Bowman Ales near Droxford, that the plans to reduce the threshold where brewers pay a 50% reduction in beer duty from 5,000 hectolitres (hl) a year, or 900,000 pints, to 2,100hl was an even bigger threat to the industry than Covid. The comments were made when Flick recently visited Bowman, which brews beers such as Swift One and Meon Valley Bitter, and employs six staff.
Visit to Bowman Ales to discuss Small Breweries' Relief
“I very much agree that the SBR in its original form was a progressive system of taxation that has created a tremendous explosion of independent craft beer making in the UK and allowed breweries to start up, grow and thrive,” said Flick. “The knock-on effect of this has been increased employment and entrepreneurship – often in rural areas – and a building up of expertise that could be lost if the government doesn’t get this right. “Any punitive tax regime is clearly going to have very serious consequences for small independent brewers here in Meon Valley, across Hampshire and nationwide, especially during the pandemic when brewers’ major customers – pubs – have largely been closed or are working at reduced capacity. “I will be passing on these concerns to ministers and urging them to drop the hl reduction or, if that’s not possible, to look at lessening the tax burden sufficiently to allow these breweries to survive.” Flick was also told by Mr Page that covid-19 had forced Bowman to drastically change the way it conducts its business away from wholesale to retail.
Meon Valley MP Flick Drummond is to ask the government to reconsider its planned changes to Small Breweries’ Relief (SBR) after being told it would devastate independent breweries in Hampshire.
Flick backs tougher enforcement against illegal cars and motorbikes
Meon Valley MP Flick Drummond has thrown her support behind proposed legislation to increase penalties for drivers who use illegal number plates. The Vehicle Registration Offences (Penalty Points) Bill was presented by Andrew Griffith MP in the House of Commons today. It seeks to add three penalty points to an offender’s licence in addition to any £100 fixed penalty notice or court fine up to £1000. At the moment, a driver can only be fined and Flick believes this is an

insufficient deterrent, especially for motorcyclists who speed on the A272 and A32 in the constituency. Anyone keeping or driving a vehicle with an obstructed number plate, or without a number plate, could potentially face the tougher punishment if the bill becomes law. Those who do so often avoid speeding fines and other road offences because cameras cannot identify them. “This Ten-Minute Rule Bill would close a loophole that is allowing antisocial motorists to flout the law and, in reality, get away with nothing more than a £100 fine in most cases,” said Flick. “This law would certainly help in Meon Valley where this anti-social behaviour by a minority of motorcyclists is a major problem. “Penalty points on the driving licences lead to higher insurance premiums and the risk of eventual loss of licence. This would be a real deterrent against this behaviour and I support the bill.” A recent Automatic Number Plate Recognition Independent Advisory Group report on the effectiveness of the number plate regime in the UK also backed up the bill’s aims. It found that the current roadside penalty of a £100 fixed penalty notice is not an effective deterrent against noncompliant number plates in the UK. It suggested a more robust penalty regime for number plate offences would enable a simpler prosecution route for non-compliance.
