COMMUNITY Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club News Children’s Lockdown Poetry Competition With all the changes going on in almost every aspect of our everyday life, we at Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club decided we needed to do something to recognise this and try something different. So, we have just launched our first ever Poetry Competition aimed at Primary School children in Key Stage 1 & 2. The subject of the poems is to be “Lockdown”, we want to know what you got up to, what you missed, what was new, what new skills you learnt, how did you cope, what did you find hard, who helped you etc. The subject can be anything that children want to tell us about. We have a team of judges made up of, teachers and Rotarian’s and we will be awarding first and second prizes for Key Stage 1 & 2, plus there will be a special judges prize for the entry that the judges feel deserves special recognition. year is far from what can be called normal and subsequently the majority of these events have had to be cancelled or postponed. One of those major events planned for this year was our Fashion Show unfortunately scheduled for March just as we went into lockdown. This event was already sold out and we subsequently offered a refund for all tickets sold. Amazingly many people came forward and were keen that the money they had spent on the ticket should be taken as a donation and given to the MS include an Argos collection point service. The Sainsbury’s will be one of three Neighbourhood Hub stores in the country and will be twice the size of a normal Sainsbury’s local. The store will replace the existing Budgens. There will be a temporary closure of 12 weeks from the beginning of September whilst the building is completely refurbished.

society as planned. We were overwhelmed by the numbers with this view and we are now able to donate around £2,000 to the MS society despite the Fashion Show not going ahead. We are extremely grateful to the generosity of those who donated their entry fee and we would like to reassure them that if possible we will plan another Fashion Show in the future. Rotary Together talks During lockdown with so many things being done at a distance via the internet etc. Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland have organised Tuesday evening talks on many subjects some of which need little introduction - Captain Tom : An inspiration to a country – to some less known, but equally inspirational stories - Keira gave me her heart and we changed UK organ donation law – The story of 10 year old Max Johnson’s heart transplant, which changed the landscape of organ donation in the UK, from an opt in to an opt out system. These talks can be watched live on the Rotary YouTube Channel at 19.05 on a Tuesday evening or you can catch up with them later on YouTube. thousands of home, technology and toy products. Sainsbury’s will be taking on the existing members of staff. The new team in Bishop’s Waltham hope to play an active role in the community. they will support a local charity as well as nationwide community programmes and charity partners. Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s property director said: “We’re looking forward to opening the doors to a brand new Sainsbury’s Neighbourhood Hub store in Bishop’s Waltham this November. “We know the local community is going to enjoy the wide range of food and convenience products on offer in this new store. "We will continue to keep the community updated on our plans to refurbish this store.”

Unique, Exciting and Steeped in History

O

ld Droxford Station is a truly unique property steeped in history and now a stylish private residence available for sale through The Country House Company.

Droxford Station was a small station on the Meon Valley Railway, designed by British architect T.P.Figgis. T. P. Figgis was renowned for his work on British public buildings including the iconic London stations of Stockwell, Oval, Kennington, Elephant & Castle and Borough. Droxford Station was opened in 1903 and was one of 4 stations designed by Figgis for The Meon Valley railway, which between 1903 and 1968 ran along 22 miles of glorious Hampshire countryside. The major claim to fame for Old Droxford Station came in 1944 amid World War ll, when Droxford Station was used by the Prime Minister Winston Churchill as his base during preparations for the Normandy landings. Based in an armored train parked in the sidings at Droxford, Churchill met with numerous ministers, military commanders and leaders of allied nations. On 4 June 1944, shortly before the landings were due to take place, Free French leader Charles de Gaulle visited Churchill at Droxford, and was informed of the invasion plans.

“ 6

So, with that exciting history the property, with its classic station design and original features, has been skillfully refurbished by the current owners to create a unique and stylish 4 bedroom family home.

The major claim to fame came when Droxford Station was used by Winston Churchill as his base during preparations for the Normandy landings.

The main station waiting room is now a dual aspect drawing room with a magnificent oak panelled vaulted ceiling and fireplace with log burning stove. The ladies waiting room is now a family room and the original ticket office is now a study designed to retain the booth and cabinets from its operating days. In addition, on the ground floor is an elegant formal dining room, a superb extensively fitted kitchen/dining room with a range cooker and large utility/boot room with cloakroom and access outside. There is also a rear lobby, additional cloakroom and second staircase to the guest suite with bathroom. Accessed via the main staircase is the master bedroom with en suite bathroom, two further double bedrooms and a large family bathroom. The gardens are a superb feature of the house and again in keeping with its history. They have been attractively landscaped to include large areas of lawn with perennial borders, orchard, raised vegetable beds plus Victorian style Hartley Botanic greenhouse and two paddocks. The detached signal box has been reconstructed as a tasteful one bedroom annexe which has open plan living space with kitchenette and fireplace, a double bedroom and private bathroom. There is also a garage/workshop/office which is substantial and benefits from planning permission for use of the first floor as an office. Old Droxford Station is in the Hampshire village of Soberton which lies on the west of the River Meon and in the heart of the Meon Valley and South Downs National Park. Guide price £1,600,000 For full details please see www.countryhousecompany.co.uk or call Kate Porter on 02392 632275.

would simply ask that internal doors are open so we do not need to touch any surfaces. Extended discussion on properties will take place outside where possible. For viewings we ensure that doors are open in advance of a viewing, we only let 2 adults, from the same household, in a property at any one time, and we leave a sensible period of time between viewings. The viewing agent will wipe down any surfaces or door handles touched, and all viewing agents have a pack with sanitizer and disinfectant. After over 25 years in the industry we are experienced at making the viewing as effective as possible for the applicant and the vendor or landlord. As a company we have always prided ourselves on getting the right applicant for the right property.

The focus at The Country House Company is to ensure that our viewings and appraisals are carried out safely and efficiently. All the regulations in place for COVID 19 precautions may seem daunting but actually are quick, effective and inspire confidence during a viewing or appraisal and we have an efficient system in place for all members of the team.

We are experiencing an exceptional demand for houses at the moment to sell and to let. We have had offers on houses confirmed within a week of launch, sales offer agreed on the first day of viewings and a couple of rentals booked even before the property has been marketed. These are busy times so if you do have a property to sell or are looking at the possibility of letting out your house please do call us on 023 92 632275. Marishelle Butler

Having ensured in writing that no individual involved with a viewing or appraisal are displaying symptoms of Covid 19, are self-isolating or have been in contact with anyone who is self-isolating, we ask all parties to wear gloves and mask and we provide our own re-usable Country House Company masks. O

wowow.” Thud, thud. The sounds dragged her, somewhat gratefully it has to be said, from a deep sleep once again populated by gangsters, drug lords and rednecks. Late night binge-watching of Ozark during lockdown had probably been a mistake. But there was lots of life in the old dog yet, seemingly; himself was hopping energetically around the bed clutching his foot. One of the spaniels, after an initial puzzled, head-on-one-side look, collected its bone and sauntered off. Having trodden on the canine equivalent of a Lego landmine herself many times, she winced in sympathy. “If it’s any consolation, the bone might have been a sort of present left for you by the bed. That’s quite sweet really.” She suggested. Casting her a deeply dubious look, he said “Should the dogs even be in the bedroom?” “Well, when Queen Victoria died, one of her dogs was with her on the bed till the very end” she defended. He looked mildly sceptical and hobbled off to the bathroom. When they reconvened downstairs for breakfast a little later, the dogs sat expectantly by the table, unfailing optimism in the eyes that followed fork to mouth. On the rare occasion that no morsel came their way, there was never resentment - and she loved that about them. She tossed a bit of bacon rind to each. “Did you know” she shared more gleaned trivia “that ‘Dog Days’, those hot days of summer through July and into August, are so called because in ancient times they coincided with the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star?” He did not know that - and said so between mouthfuls of sausage and egg. Sultry and heavy, she felt they were surely the best of days; glimpsed reminders of those ethereal, lazy summers of childhood. On days like those, her hot dogs liked best to stretch out in the nearest muddy puddle. But she didn’t mind. They’d taken to greeting her with a slipper each; cheering after a dog’s breakfast of a day. And sometimes even from the same pair. And it didn’t bother her that, dog tired after a walk, they usually chose to flop down somewhere inconveniently underfoot. Often finding herself stretching awkwardly to get to the taps or unable to open the fridge, she’d let her sleeping dogs lie, they looked so peaceful. It really was a dog’s life.

12

Another recently acquired snippet came to her; “Mary Queen of Scots went to the executioner’s block with her beloved Skye terrier hidden beneath her skirts. After Mary’s death, it refused to leave and lay, rather gruesomely, in the blood between her shoulders and severed head. Eventually removed by force, the dog pined for its mistress and died shortly thereafter. Poor little thing” she announced with feeling. Raising eyebrows, he put down his coffee cup “Well, that’s jolly. Darling, have you eaten an encyclopaedia? A dog-eared volume of D to E perhaps?” A little sarcastic, she thought, when she was generously sharing her new-found knowledge. “Algorithms.” She said loftily “At least I assume that’s what it is. I was looking at some random dog stuff online and, like magic, it’s given me endless variations on that theme. Although weirdly fascinating, I’m not sure that’s not a tiny bit sinister. The internet’s awash with tales of ‘man’s best friend’ – a term first attributed to Frederick the Great, by the way.” Doggedly she continued with her theme. “Example: Lord Carnarvon’s dog howled and then died at the exact moment that its master died - on a different continent, no less. Tremendously sad – but how about that?” “Well, I knew that one actually – protracted childhood obsession with Tutankhamun. We are famously a nation of hopelessly besotted lovers of dogs. Who love us back. Well, mostly anyway.” “What do you mean, mostly?” Her idle browsing had revealed only canine love, devotion and sacrifice. He elaborated. “Apparently Richard II had a greyhound called Mathe. It was said that he was his master’s shadow and “knew no one else”, until the day that Flint Castle was besieged and Henry Bolingbroke came to deliver his ultimatum to the King. Mathe apparently came bounding into the room and proceeded to fawn all over the victorious Henry, completely ignoring the defeated King Richard. From that day the hound only followed Henry IV, as he became. Poor Richard, talk about insult heaped upon injury – that must have been a really tough day. And who knows, perhaps, to Mathe, Henry still smelled tantalizingly of the roast boar sandwich he’d had for lunch, or something.” He stood up. “Thank you for breakfast, darling. I’m off to see a man about a dog. Haha.” She smiled as he walked past the spaniels, fondling their silky ears. They fawned adoringly around his legs and, dogging his footsteps, followed him out of the kitchen. He did, after all, smell deliciously of sausages…

COMMUNITY / GARDEN Purple Community Fund helped through crisis by the Rotary Club of Fareham There are some charities that just tick every box for needing our help – whether in this country or overseas. One of those worthy causes supported by the Rotary Club of Fareham, in a long-standing relationship, is PCF - the Purple Community Fund. As an example, in 2016 our Club was instrumental in providing solar panels on the roof of the PCF School in Tondo as an ongoing economy initiative. The Purple Community Fund was started in 1996 by Jane Walker MBE and the charity is based in Hedge End. It supports women and children living AND working on the rubbish dumps of Manilla in the Philippines. Looking around at our own children close by, it is unthinkable to have youngsters in such terrible surroundings and Jane decided to do something to make their lives better. They recycle everything imaginable from truck tyres to drinks can ring-pulls!

Supply and planting large specimen trees and shrubs Espalier, pleached and instant impact hedges All trees and shrubs carefully selected Design, landscaping and ongoing maintenance Free site visit and consultation Bosque is a trading name of Just Limegrass Ltd. Harko: 07710 502798 Tom: 07855 656984 www.bosque international.co.uk

Before the added pressures of the Coronavirus, Jane and her team supported those working as waste pickers and set up a feeding programme for undernourished children. PCF has educated over 10,000 children and provided health and welfare education. So, where do we come into it locally … The Rotary Club of Fareham heard that the families supported by PCF were receiving the necessary food stocks but then further disaster struck. A devastating fire swept through the community. 1055 people lost their homes, possessions, food and even clothes. As Rotarian John Rowlinson, who liaises with the Purple Community Fund for our Club, said “PCF were able to open their centres to help the affected families to give them a place to stay. They opened a community kitchen to feed children and their parents with three meals a day. When I heard of this, I knew that the Rotary Club of Fareham could once again offer help during this current crisis.” Members of the Club and Rotary charities were able to raise funds between them and sent out £1,445 to the Philippines for PCF. Some of that was used immediately to buy 55 sacks of rice providing 10kg bags of rice for 138 families. PCF then added donations of vegetables and canned goods giving cooked meals for the families while they were rebuilding their homes after the fire had left them homeless. So, the positive effects of the Rotary Club of Fareham were felt 6,729 miles away in Tondo, Manilla putting into perspective our own concerns to help these families at the time of their greatest need. We continue to support them and, if you would like further details of this charity, the Purple Community Fund can be found at www.p-c-f.org

COMMUNITY East Meon Garden Club – Photographic Competition

Class 59: River Meon Winner: Fiona Cowan

Class 62: My Favourite Flower Winner: William Croft

What an extraordinary few months we have had, but the Garden Club Committee have tried to keep their Club Members involved and entertained during this time via ‘Zoom’. Whilst it has not been possible to meet as usual, it was thought the Photographic Competition would translate very well in a digital form and keeping to the originally named classes, allowing a longer time for people to take and submit their entries, the competition was launched in late Spring.

Class 62 (age 13-18): My Favourite Flower Winner: Gracie Alderman

The response was simply amazing, attracting 102 entries from 36 competitors and this came with the additional bonus of recruiting seven new Garden Club Members. The Judge this year was Richard Smith and we are indebted to him for taking on the responsibility of judging the various classes and adding a critique for each successful photograph.

Class 60: Shadow Winner: David Harlow (overall winner)

It has to be said that this competition, putting all the photographs together, categorising them and putting them into a presentation form was a very time consuming job and ‘hats off’ to Chairman David for fulfilling this task so wonderfully well. Needless to say, the process had its moments, time constraints and computer crashes to name but two! However, and it is a big however, the results evening at the beginning of August went off without a hitch, attracting 29 members ‘ Zooming’ in for what was an evening of pictorial delight. The standard of photographs was extremely high which of course made the judging quite difficult. For those of you who were unable to catch the results here they are in Class Order: Written by Pamela Peacock

Class 63: Church Winner: Ruth Atkinson

Class 61: Portrait of a Gardener Winner: Aaron Nash

LOCAL SERVICES

PROFESSIONAL Say Hello to Maria!

someone smile, that someone would say I'm really looking forward to you coming. Making someone laugh, making someone's life easier by helping them out with those little things, these that are big things to people that we care for. It often gives them a chance to be able to continue living in their own homes, in this time I forgot about my "real job" search and being a carer become my passion. I have first degree in social work and both NVQ2 and NVQ3 alongside with a dementia course and person centred care course, but when I started this job I may have had the degree but no experience to go with it at all and definitely thought this kind of job wasn’t for me.

Maria started with us in March this year and we couldn’t be happier to have her as part of our team. Maria is kind hearted, full of happiness and a compassionate, hard working carer. Becoming a carer has been a long journey for her and here’s what she had to say: “I have become a Carer by a chance really, I moved to a different town and struggled to find a job, trying to figure out what actually I want to do. My sister in law recommended a caring agency that she was working for and I got the job really quickly as the demand is really high for carers. To be honest I had no idea what a carer actually was, yes I know sounds really silly but being Polish I wouldn't have known as we didn't have (back then) in Poland such a wonderful service for elderly or vulnerable people. This was meant to be only a quick stop before I found a "real job" and here I am 12 years later loving every single bit of the job that was meant to be just a "quick stop". The first few weeks were really hard and I thought a few times just to quit, the reason I didn't was because I needed the money and that was what kept me in in the job to start with, but the longer I worked as a carer the more I loved the fact that simple things, simple tasks, that didn't cost me any effort could make someone so happy. I fell in love with the fact that my quite often still sleepy face at 07.00am would make

20

But if you have empathy, if you are considerate, sympathetic and you can put needs of those that you care for first, you

see them as individual's with individual needs and you have a bit of common sense and good sense of humour, you don't need the degree's and NVQ's to become and be a good carer, you can get these on the job at your own pace. I started with looking after elderly people and listening to their amazing life stories, looking back at them made me realise one day I will be old too and may need help as well, this is what really pushed me to want to be the best carer I can. Working with people with complex needs and people after accidents or people at the end of their lives made me realise that we don't really know what is around the corner and that made me want even more to become the best carer I could be, providing them with dignity, understanding, respect, thoughtfulness and simply treat them the way I would like to be treated.

I am very lucky as threw the years I have met so many wonderful, experienced carers that I had privilege to work alongside and learn so much from them. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about all the agencies that I worked for, as very quickly I found that behind the ethos of being different, caring and putting clients and carers needs first, was nothing more but just the numbers that counted really. The calls had to be covered and neither the client’s needs or cares were really important to them. Then again by a chance I came across Lapis Care and from the first call I made to them, the first visit in their office for interview and first outing with a senior carer, I felt that this is it, there is still team spirit existing in community care, that they actually do support each other at work and outside work. The clients do mater, their needs do mater and the carers mater just as much

too. Even though I haven't been working for Lapis very long, it does feel like home. I go to work happy and I do look forward to working with my colleagues. There is a very good communication between carers and management and so much understanding and any problems, which are solved very professionally, so you can't ask for much more really. So if you do wonder what to do with your spare time because your kids are grown up or you try to find a work that fits around your family or you fed up with your job and you want to do something that has a meaning, join their team. You will be really warmly welcomed!” Maria with one of our clients

The value of advice You work hard to support your family and enjoy life – so why not seek expert advice to ensure your wealth is being managed effectively?

L

ife is busy – often complicated. Families become fragmented; demands on our time increase. You’d think that advances in technology, communications and media would make life easier, but that’s not always the case – it can just increase the noise and confusion as ‘information overload’ leaves us unsure about which way to turn. We rely on experts to help us or point us in the right direction: if our car breaks down, we see a mechanic; if we get toothache, we visit the dentist; if our body hurts, we consult a doctor. The same should also be true of our finances. Why wouldn’t we seek the advice of experts to ensure that it’s being managed at the most effective time and in the most effective way?

Changes in legislation and tax regimes, coupled with increased choices in financial products, all need expert knowledge Our advice proposition centres around you – a relationship-based, long-term approach focusing on understanding your motivations, needs and aspirations. Only then can we recommend products and investments that work in synergy

with each other and match your attitude to risk. But of course, ‘the value of advice’ can be subjective and mean different things to different people. For some, ‘value’ can be found in the relinquishing of the burden and worry; for others, it’s knowing that their investments are being professionally managed and working towards achieving their goals. However you define ‘value’, you can rest assured that we’re here to support and guide you on every step of your financial journey. At St. James’s Place, we focus on achieving and maintaining a thorough understanding of your financial needs and aspirations. We believe passionately that the best wealth management service is provided through personalised, face-toface advice. We offer investments, with opportunities to grow your wealth and protect it against inflation, and a broad range of funds to choose from to help you build an appropriate portfolio. Regardless of your life stage, it’s also important to receive the right advice on your pension requirements. We can help you make the most of retirement opportunities, whether you’re an individual or a business.

We also specialise in providing effective solutions to meet your protection needs. Whether you require life cover or advice on Inheritance Tax, St. James’s Place will offer you the right products and services to suit you and your family. Whether you are remortgaging, downsizing, or a first-time buyer, St. James’s Place can offer advice on a wide range of mortgages. We also have access to a range of banking solutions.

We will take the time to discuss your finances and find ways of making your money work harder for you Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and the value may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.

COMMUNITY / HEALTH South Downs National Park launches major plan for nature recovery across South East

An ambitious vision to help boost nature and drive a green economic recovery has been unveiled today by the South Downs National Park Authority and partners. The bold strategy, covering the South East region, aims to create a connected network of “green infrastructure” that makes havens for wildlife, supports local economies, helps to mitigate climate change and gives local people all the health and well-being benefits of a better natural environment. Twelve areas across the region – primarily on the edge or beyond the National Park’s boundaries – have been identified as key areas for long-term investment in more green infrastructure (see map below). The term “green infrastructure” embraces the network of natural and semi-natural features, spaces and water courses that can be managed to deliver wide-ranging benefits for people and wildlife. It can include parks, gardens, rivers and streams, roadside verges, street trees, hedgerows, churchyards, allotments and nature reserves as well as wider green spaces. The detailed masterplan, called The People and Nature Network (PANN), has been produced in partnership with a range of organisations, including dozens of local authorities across Hampshire and Sussex, the RSPB, Wildlife Trusts, The Woodland Trust, English Heritage and the Environment Agency. Andrew Lee, Director of Countryside Policy and Management for the South Downs National Park Authority, explained: “The ethos behind this ambitious strategy is that nature is working invisibly, every day, to keep our environment healthy for both wildlife and people. Nature provides us with clean water, fresh air, food to eat, and tranquil places to enjoy with our families. Yet we can never take it for granted as our natural environment is sadly under threat from climate change and global biodiversity decline, together with the fact that we’re living in one of the most crowded parts of the UK. “Nature doesn’t recognise administrative boundaries and that’s why the People and Nature Network is such a vital piece of work – laying out our collective long-term ambition, at both a regional and national level, to promote more green infrastructure. That could be creating a wildflower meadow in an urban area, improving the greenery along a canal, laying a hedgerow or planting more street trees. “Every bit of this interconnected green network plays its part in supporting wildlife and also our communities, whether that be through boosting the tourism economy or just being an uplifting space for people to enjoy the natural world.

“We have this amazing natural space in the National Park, but its benefits don’t stop at the designation boundary. This plan aims to make space for nature in urban as well as rural environments and create links with the National Park which already has over 1,000 nature conservation areas.” PANN ties in with the Government’s 25-year Environment Plan, which sets out a number of targets, including clean air and water, thriving plants and wildlife, and adapting to climate change. PANN also recognises that creating a healthier natural environment will also bring economic benefits for the region, including reducing financial burden on health and social care, increasing visitor spending and increased desirability as a location for business. The partnership will work towards its goals through a number of avenues, including encouraging green infrastructure in emerging planning policy, seeking more local and national funding and developing more community projects that help the environment. The People and Nature Network report can be read here: https:// www.southdowns.gov.uk/national-park-authority/our-work/ partnership-management/people-and-nature-network-pann/ The report identifies 12 Natural Capital Investment Areas where more resources are needed to help nature and support more green infrastructure. Each of these areas has a unique set of environmental challenges and each area will require a bespoke approach. Improving green infrastructure in these areas will also help promote wildlife connectivity between protected landscapes, such as the Surrey Hills, High Weald and Chichester Harbour Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Over time as the research and evidence is extended it is likely that further NCIAs will be identified. They are currently as shown on the map above.

Shedfield Parish Council’s biggest environmental challenge

S

hedfield, Shirrell Heath and Waltham Chase are villages that nestle within the boundary of Shedfield Parish between Bishops Waltham and Wickham. Historically, The Manor of Shedfield was owned by the Bishops of Winchester and was recorded in a 1337 court roll although archaeological studies suggest that it has been continuously occupied since the Mesolithic period. Previously attached to Droxford, the civil parish was formed in 1894 owing to population growth. From this period, the villages developed their own identities. Over the last few decades, Waltham Chase has seen the highest growth in residential development and is now home to more than half of the four thousand residents. Waltham Chase still retains a village shop, Post Office and two pubs and in 1989 was chosen as the location of a new primary school. Shirrell Heath has grown more slowly and Shedfield welcomed the twentieth century with The Meon Valley Hotel, Golf and Country Club opening in 1975, a championship golf course within 225 acres of countryside. Change is inevitable as the years roll by but thanks to careful and thoughtful planning we have managed to grow our communities but without losing our beautiful countryside. Our parish includes numerous areas of common land classified as SINC sites, Waltham Chase SSSI, streams and hedgerows with a network of footpaths traversing our parish allowing us to enjoy the wildlife and their habitat. The parish council and volunteers work very hard to protect and enhance these areas for all to enjoy.

28

on many environmental grounds, some of which are road safety, the detrimental effects of noise and dust to residents and the wildlife, and the ecological impact on and around the application site. Our Meon Valley villages have seen great change but as a parish council we have managed these growth changes. However, we must not forget those who lived and worked here before us. It is possible that the site contains unrecorded Romano-British remains. During the development of the golf course adjacent to Five Oaks Farm, 23 RomanoBritish first century kilns were discovered and our County Archaeologist believes that this potential quarry and landfill site may contain similar of national importance.

Image: © Steve Bissell

Image: © Marek Szczepanek

The site and surrounds are currently a haven for wildlife, large and small including many species of bat, owl, butterfly and lizard and a vast variety of birdlife ranging from woodpeckers and skylarks, through to birds of prey to warblers, buntings, finches, wagtails and thrushes. The meadows are frequently used by badger, deer and fox. Our native hedgerows are considered to be UK priority habitats for nesting birds, small rodents and hedgehogs and probably more small inhabitants call Shedfield parish their home but are yet to be discovered. The potential that the Hazel Dormouse may live in Shedfield has even been noted by Winchester City Council whilst considering a recent residential planning application. The joy of our parish is that these creatures are undisturbed and are flourishing. Currently, we can walk the footpaths on and around the site to explore and enjoy our villages and countryside.

In July this year, TJ Transport Ltd made a planning application to Hampshire County Council to extract sand and then backfill with inert waste at Image: © Steve Bissell Five Oaks Farm, between Shedfield and Waltham Chase. The application site extends for 7.9 hectares and is currently in agricultural use. Several houses back directly on to the site. It is proposed to extract over 200,000 tons of sand and replace them with over 400,000 tons of backfill. This will mean digging down 10m (33ft) with only 2-3m earth bank to protect the surrounding area from dust, noise and visual intrusion. The operations would last at least six years, with a possibility of an additional southward extension. Up to 80 lorries each day will arrive along the busy Winchester Road. The prevailing wind would take dust across the road towards the nearby primary school.

The big question is how long will our villages be allowed to survive as we know and love them. If this application succeeds, Shedfield, Shirrell Heath and Waltham Case will suffer greatly and adjacent historic villages Wickham and Bishops Waltham will notice a vast increase of HGV traffic.

The parish council intends to submit a full objection to this application on the basis that there is no need for the quarry under the current Hampshire Mineral and Waste Plan (2013) and that the location is totally unsuitable

Cllr. Francesca Byrne

COMMUNITY Live music returns to West Meon While the ongoing Covid-19 crisis has forced the Primrose Piano Quartet to scale back on its plans for the 10th Anniversary West Meon Music Festival in September, the quartet is now going ahead with its alternative “minifestival”. West Meon church is happy to host a socially-distanced audience of up to 65 for three concerts on 11th and 12th September and with Government confirmation that indoor concerts can take place from15 August it means that – barring a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases and an ad hoc lockdown – live chamber music will be heard again in the district. “Like all self-employed musicians we have seen every one of our scheduled concerts cancelled since lockdown began in March,” says Andrew Fuller, the quartet’s cellist and festival musical director. “We’ve missed performing just as much as our audiences have missed listening to live music.”

Winchester Heritage Open Days - Friday 11th to Sunday 20th September 2020

Full details of the concert programmes can be found on the festival website (www.westmeonmmusic.co.uk) with online booking now available for tickets at £15 for main aisle seats and £12 for side aisles. Given the limited number of seats available, early booking is recommended and concert goers will need to indicate whether they are booking tickets for a single household or bubble to meet track and trace guidelines and allow seats to be preallocated. If you are unable to book online then please contact the box office on 01489 891055 for alternative options. For those looking further ahead the planned “10th anniversary” festival will now be held from 9-12 September 2021 when guests will include clarinettist Michael Collins, guitarist Laura Snowden and BBC Young Musician Strings winner 2018, cellist Maxim Calver.

Whatever you want to store...

Winchester Heritage Open Days is now in its fifth year - a bit remarkable given the challenges of the past few months. It is the community spirit behind the festival that keeps it going and has enabled everyone to pull together to produce something really rather magical for this year. What has delighted the organisers most is the overwhelming enthusiasm and willingness of so many individuals and organisations in and around Winchester to produce yet another amazing programme of talks, tours, exhibitions and other events to draw people into Winchester. Most events will be taking place online as there is still so much uncertainty surrounding Covid-19. Digital events will include pre-recorded walks and talks, live streaming of lectures and performances, and specially commissioned films and audio available on Winchester Heritage Open Days very own YouTube and podcast channels.

...for whatever reason – house sale and purchase not coinciding, travelling, bereavement, house building work, decorating or even ‘de-cluttering’ to sell your house more quickly – we offer a friendly, flexible and secure facility.

Check out the website www.winchesterheritageopendays. org/2020-plans . It will be updated weekly until the beginning of the festival.

The three short concerts (no intervals to avoid unnecessary social contact among the audience) on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening will include such favourites as Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E-flat and Beethoven’s String Trio in G major. Saturday afternoon’s concert is a tribute to the plight of the musician in lockdown with each member of the quartet performing their favourite solo works – including a Bach cello suite and chaconne for violin, one of Brahms’ piano intermezzo and Stravinsky’s Elegy for Viola. There will also be a distinct French flavour to the programmes with works by Fauré and Chausson reflecting the quartet’s next planned CD to be released in 2021.

Oxley’s Bookshop on Broad Street in Alresford turns seventy!

n 1950 Laurence and Ursula Oxley were living in a colonial style bungalow in Cheriton, when Laurence decided to purchase 17 Broad Street. The shop was much smaller then, as the space behind had been used for milking cows when it was Dedman’s Dairy. Their first alteration was to enlarge the front window so that Laurence could have a piano winched into it by crane. Ursula looked after the shop, selling antiques for the first years before antiquarian books began to take preference, with Laurence specialising in books about India. Gradually, a coterie of antiques shops was opened in Alresford - once as many as fourteen. The art side of the business was originally started to frame the pictures that Ursula, a trained artist, was creating. Glass for framing was sourced from old frames bought at sales! Later, Ursula cofounded the Alresford Art Society. As trade grew, George Watson took over the picture framing, which he ran for many years. He was responsible for the innovative and prize-winning stands built in the 1980’s for the Alresford Show. Laurence was one of the founders of the Alresford Historical and Literary Society, and its President for many years. He was also elected to Winchester council and gave talks and lectures to local societies. Alresford in the 1950s and 60s was less prosperous than it is now, and Laurence had to travel to buy and sell. This led to participation in international book fairs in Europe, Japan and the USA. It was around this time that he made the acquaintance of the Krugars who, when visiting Alresford, secretly collected classified information on micro-dotted papers left in the public loos opposite the Police Station. A frequent visitor was the commentator and raconteur John Arlott, who lived in East Street and took an interest in the history of and development threats to the town.

watercolours and maps. Oxley’s also published several books on the area, including a reprint of Duthy’s Sketches of Hampshire. During subsequent years, the gallery became devoted to watercolour pictures. Laurence’s son Anthony, a qualified Fine Art Guild Commended Framer, now runs the business and specialises in the work of Myles Birket Foster, RWS (1825-1899) and antique maps. The Studio behind the shop was rebuilt in 1999, and all framing is done there. These days most work is undertaken using conservation materials, and pictures are often protected with UV filtering Museum Glass – all unknown seventy years ago. The shop has faced new challenges over the last decade, but thanks to a commonly shared love of ‘real’ books, it appears to have seen off the threat of the e-book. Business rates recently became a great problem, and Oxley’s had its moment of fame last year when it was mentioned in a debate on the subject in the House of Commons. Thankfully, since reopening in June after an extraordinary twelveweek closure, Oxley’s loyal customers have returned, along with many new ones. After seventy years in business it will take more than a pandemic to see this bookshop off, and visitors are warmly welcomed! FOOD & DRINK Hampshire Fare - Stay Loyal Stay Local: Supporting Hospitality Coinciding with the government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, running from 3rd-31st August, Hampshire Fare, the county food group, has launched phase three of its major new campaign to support the hospitality sector as it gradually reopens. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, explains: “Pre-pandemic the hospitality sector was worth in excess of 133bn to the national economy. In addition, hospitality is often crucial to the local economy and at the heart of rural communities, providing much needed employment opportunities and social hubs.

Hampshire-based vineyard and wine producer, Raimes English Sparkling, was awarded a gold medal in the Classic Cuvee Vintage category at the recent Wine GB Awards. The Wine GB awards have been a little different this year, but just as exciting as ever. The judging took place in July, with a reduced judging panel comprising Co-Chairs Susie Barrie MW and Oz Clarke MBE, and Rebecca Palmer, wine buyer of Corney & Barrow, tasting through a record number of wines. Among the other successes for Hampshire, are golds awarded to Hattingley Valley, Jenkyn Place, Black Chalk and The Grange Estates.

“Reopening hospitality was never going to be straightforward. The requirements for staff to wear protective coverings and gloves, the need to limit numbers and impose timings goes against the very ethos of offering a relaxed eating out experience. “As the sector gradually reopens, we are rolling out the third phase of our ‘stay loyal stay local’ campaign highlighting the value of this sector to our communities, through employment and enjoyment! This includes artwork featuring the stars of the hospitality sector such as our chefs and pub landlords. We are also in the process of delivering a leaflet campaign to targeted areas across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.” The ‘Stay Loyal Stay Local’ campaign was devised by Hampshire Fare and launched in June with support from Hampshire County Council and Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership. The first phase was a rallying cry, asking consumers to stay loyal to those relationships they formed with local independents, producers and suppliers during lockdown. The campaign focused on the people behind the businesses and included artwork to be used in shop windows as well as across an extensive social media campaign. Phase two developed the campaign artwork into a fun series of downloadable colour-in characters, from beekeeper to baker, aimed at encouraging children to discover more about the local environment and the local food chain. The third phase is a call out to ask and encourage people to support the recovery of

“There are some very strong winners, both sparkling and still wines, in all categories. It was particularly pleasing to see new producers competing alongside long-established ones, proving that the UK is an ever-growing and hugely exciting region to watch. Congratulations to every single medal winner, you can feel very proud of what you have achieved.”

Co-chair Susie Barrie Judges described Raimes Classic 2015, which is produced in the traditional method from classic grape varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier as “Fascinating

the local hospitality industry, such as local bars, cafes, pubs and restaurants as they reopen. Tracy Nash continues: “Hospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said in a recent report that the hospitality sector is crucial to the health of the UK economy, providing muchneeded growth, investment and jobs in every single region of the UK. Kate Nicholls stated that, ‘hospitality is the third largest private sector employer in the UK, double the size of financial services and bigger than automotive, pharmaceuticals and aerospace combined. It has played a key part in helping the economy through tough times’. “We want to encourage people to support their local hospitality businesses – which are so important in terms of community, economy, environment, resilience, sustainability and wellbeing. We have been impressed by our local hospitality owners and managers who have put in place well-considered procedures for the welfare of the customer. We ask people to consider supporting their local pubs, cafes and restaurants, many of whom are also offering al fresco dining, cook at home alternatives and takeaway. They are going to need all the support they can get. “Over 75% of our hospitality members have signed up for this scheme, which is an impressive take-up.
