Caring for Hedgehogs this Autumn

W

hat is an Autumn juvenile? Autumn juvenile hedgehogs are ones that are old enough to be away from their mothers but too small to hibernate. The autumn juvenile season can start as early as September and is busy through until the end of November. However, some will struggle on and the occasional one can be found from December through until April. [The season will vary slightly depending whether you live in the south or north and depending on the weather]. The ones found in March and April may have struggled through the winter or they may have hibernated but at the minimum weight for hibernation so they are weak when they emerge. Young hedgehogs can and will hibernate at 450gms (1lb) or less but are more likely to survive hibernation at 600gms (22oz) and will be in better condition post hibernation. Hedgehogs that can probably be left in the wild If the hedgehog is a regular visitor to your garden, is only seen at night, appears active and you are prepared to feed it every night then it can be left in the wild. See notes on feeding and feeding stations. However if the hedgehog goes off its food, wobbles and staggers or starts coming out in the day or you notice it has green slimy poo especially if there is blood in it, then it needs extra help as soon as possible (see basic first aid). Even if you must bring a hedgehog in do keep putting food outside as there may be siblings or other autumn juveniles making the most of your hospitality. If the food does not go you could continue to provide dry cat biscuits – these will not go off as quickly as tinned food so are less wasteful. Make sure there is water available, especially if feeding dry foods. It is helpful if you can weigh your visitor at least once a week if its size is a concern to ensure it is putting on weight and doing well. Any under 250gms in autumn are likely to be genuine orphans and should be rescued immediately. Hedgehogs that are probably best rescued Hedgehogs are nocturnal so those out in the day are displaying odd behaviour. Even though they appear lively and are rushing around these hedgehogs probably need rescuing in autumn/winter. Once out in the day they can be days away from death. Even when rescued they can seem OK for a day or so and then suddenly collapse and die. So if out in the day whether rushing about or curled up asleep they need rescuing. Hedgehogs do NOT hibernate in the open. They make a nest of leaves etc and disappear into the depths of the nest and are completely hidden. Hedgehogs under 450gms (1lb) that appear to be hibernating (cold and in a tight ball) are suffering from hypothermia and are in fact dying. These must be rescued if they are to stand any chance of survival.

4

Towards the end of October or if bad weather is expected those under 350gms (12oz) may best be rescued whether they are out day or night. If in doubt call us on 01584 890 801 to find a carer near you and seek their advice. In October small ones seen away from your garden eg crossing the road at night may also be best rescued as they may not have a ready supply of food as ones regularly visiting your garden. Feeding They can have hedgehog food, meaty cat or dog food or cat biscuits. They will also need a dish of water, especially if dry biscuits are offered. Feeding Stations Make a feeding station for the outside hedgehogs. Use either a plastic mushroom box or child’s toy box or similar and cut a 13cm x 13cm (5”x 5”) hole in one of the short sides. Place this over the food, like a tunnel, and the hedgehog can get through the hole to the food but it keeps the cats out. A brick on top should stop the box being pushed aside. Another brick or large stone placed 13cm (5”) from the entrance should stop a cat lying down and hooking the food out with its paw. Always make sure there is a little food left in the mornings – if not, you are not feeding them enough. Basic First Aid Line a high-sided box (hedgehogs are good climbers) with newspaper and put it in a warm room. Pick the hedgehog up using a towel and place it in the box; use that towel as some bedding for it. If the hedgehog is lethargic, cold, wobbles and staggers then it needs a hot water bottle or similar. These hedgehogs need more intensive care and are best passed on to a hedgehog rehabilitator as soon as possible. Cover the bottle with some towel and place the hedgehog on this but still with its towel covering it. The water in the bottle will need to be changed every few hours to keep it warm. Alternatives to hot water bottles are soft drink bottles full of hot water, ice cream or margarine tubs full of water with the lid on, wheat bags (UNFRAGRANCED ONLY cover with a small plastic bag to prevent it becoming soiled) a pet snuggle safe or heat pad or a reptile heat mat. Do not use back warming pads for human use, as they are not designed to be urinated on! Provide food and water and then SEEK ADVICE (including the numbers of carers in your area who may be able to help) – telephone us on 01584 890 801. Many autumn juveniles will have lungworms that in turn can cause breathing difficulties. Those already showing problems ie out in the day will be most at risk and are likely to have the highest worm burdens. Symptoms may include lack of appetite, no weight gain even when eating, coughing and rapid breathing. These will need worming and antibiotics so are best passed to a rehabilitator who can arrange veterinary treatment. British Hedgehog Preservation Society www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

riving into town, she thought “Have I got a clean mask?” The things we say now… And Coronavirus also meant hand sanitizer in her hand bag, the car, the kitchen, the bathroom. Not to mention at the bank, the garden centre, the car boot sales. Hand sanitizer everywhere. Should have bought shares in the companies who manufacture the stuff – damn. Now, in the lobby of her hairdresser she encountered sanitizer, a man in a mask and an electronic thermometer. The Covid trinity. She’d known her hairdresser for a long time, so she was fairly certain those were his eyes above his mask. And, fairly certain he was smiling, she smiled back from behind her own mask and sat down in front of the mirror. Both pairs of eyes looked at the long, long roots of her hair. During lockdown, watching her roots grow and the grey grow with it had been sobering. Older than she thought. And fantasising about a hair appointment had replaced the one about moving to Byron Bay and buying a house next to the Hemsworths. But finally she was seated in the time machine chair, ready to turn the clock back on her hair. Goody! Rather helpfully, she felt, she’d sent advance pictures to her hairdresser. Pictures of a celeb sporting long dark roots with artfully streaked blonde ends. The effect was called Ombre. Or was it Balayage? She wasn’t sure and didn’t really care. Himself had liked the hair in the picture, but the person wearing the hair – not so much. So having carefully explained that she wanted to look the same, but different, her long suffering hairdresser began to work his magic. Conversation was a little slow, though. No-one had been on holiday. Or got married. Or done anything much, seen

anyone much. She didn’t personally know someone who had caught ‘it’ and neither did he – but maybe they both had caught it and didn’t know? Having exhausted the available topics, they fell silent. Her head swiftly became the repository of little foil parcels, so neat, oblong and flat. Like old fashioned sticks of chewing gum. But now the man behind the mask was unwrapping some of them and shaking his head. Hard to see his expression, she was now fairly certain he’d stopped smiling. This did not augur well. “What have you been using on your hair?” Somewhat taken aback, she hesitated for a nano-second. “Um… shampoo?” There had been lots of things that were hard to get during lockdown; toilet paper, obviously, because Covid-19 gave you the trots...not. Tinned tomatoes and pasta – seemingly everyone was making spag bol. And, naturally, anything slash everything required for bread making. A veritable stampede to denude the shelves of yeast and strong wheat flour. Because give the Brits a crisis - snow, storm or global pandemic – and they bake bread. Therapeutic. But no shortages of shampoo. She’d been able to get her hands on all types of shampoo. The wrong types of shampoo, it transpired. Because the wrong types can coat your hair in a way that stops both bleach and colour having any effect. Who knew? It was a shame that the wrong type of shampoo didn’t stop the grey from growing out of your scalp too – but sadly not. Rinsed off, she was given ‘special’ shampoo to take home, told to use it and come back the next day. She thought vaguely of the children, not sure why. Still scratching, she arrived home and ducked under the washing line with its pegged array of masks, washed and dancing in the breeze. “That was quick. Hair looks lovely.” Himself looked up from his paper as she opened the back door. Should she tell him? Or wait until she’d actually had her hair done and see if he noticed? She plumped for the latter. He went on “now you’re back, could you give me a trim please darling?” So she did. Had been doing so regularly since lockdown. With multi-purpose kitchen scissors and dog clippers bought for 50p at a car boot. All that clipping and snipping, much like the kneading and baking, was very therapeutic and she wondered whether she’d missed her vocation as a barber. Short back and sides, Sir? Mmnn possibly. Definitely not a vocational baker, though – her bread had an unusual masonry-like quality not often found in a foodstuff. And maybe not suited to be a proper hairdresser either, if she were honest. It was the clients. With their photos of celebrity hair-dos, their nebulous demands and their wrong types of shampoos, she wasn’t sure she could cope with the clients…

COMMUNITY / GARDEN Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club News End Polio Now There was exciting news on 25th August when the World Health Organisation declared that the whole continent of Africa had been free of the wild Polio Virus for more than 3 years. Bishops Waltham Rotary has been contributing to the End Polio Now project since the club’s formation in 1989. The project was started by Rotary in 1985, when there were 350,000 cases of wild polio in 125 Countries every year. Rotary has been partnered by UNICEF and more recently the Bill Gates Foundation to advocate the benefits of the eradication of the virus which can cause severe disabilities, with children under 5 most vulnerable to infection. The announcement that Africa is wild polio free means that there are only two countries in the world where transmission of the wild virus has never been stopped these are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary works with all the agencies in those countries to deliver vaccine to all children under 5, often struggling against the climate and communities that do not understand the benefits of immunisation despite this there have only been 102 cases of wild virus infection worldwide this year. The United Nations have established a World Polio Day on 25th October every year. As part of the awareness campaign Bishops Waltham Rotary will be planting 4000 purple crocus corms around the area during October. Look out for the purple blooms in February/ March 2021. Street collection in aid of those affected by the explosion in Beirut Many of you would have been shocked, like us, to have seen the footage of the major explosion that shook Beirut in August, the sheer scale of the devastation and the numbers affected. We were very keen to help out by organising a street collection, but we were mindful of ensuring that any funds we sent would reach the right people, plus there were the practicalities of trying to do such a collection in the post lock down environment we find ourselves in. After a bit of careful research we made contact with a Rotary Club in Beirut, who were already running a food bank out there and were ideally suited to provide support where appropriate. Plus, with a bit of ingenuity involving screwing collecting buckets to workbenches so that we could be suitably distanced from any prospective donators, a lot of hand gel and some disinfectant wipes we managed to mount a street collection in early September. At this point in time we do not know exactly how successful the collection was because the money raised is in quarantine for 72 hours, but we are confident that several hundred pounds was raised. Like our Facebook page or take a look at our website for updates on the funds raised for Beirut, the fight against Polio, what is going on, what we have been up to and how you can help us help others! ian.treveil@bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk

Hampshire Country Sports Day a Triumph!

An estimated 2,500 people attended the Hampshire Country Sports Day, at Bereleigh Estate, East Meon, near Petersfield, under cloudless skies on Sunday 13 September. The event, run in aid of the Countryside Alliance, had a full programme of events, held in the large open spaces in the beautiful grounds at Bereleigh Estate where visitors enjoyed the attractions in the open air, with plenty of room for social distancing. Visitors enjoyed main arena attractions including gun dog training demos, falconry from Xtreme Falconry, a fishing demo by Gilly Bate & Beaky Allesch–Taylor and talks by Chris Green the Countryman on wildfowling and the history of the shotgun and the terrier, lurcher and family dog shows were hugely popular with Hampshire Country Sports Day visitors. There were also 70 trade stands showcasing the best in Hampshire countryside gifts, clothing, arts and crafts, country sports equipment and food and drink. Show Chairman Bill Tyrwhitt-Drake said: “The show was a triumph! So many people came up to me to say how pleased they were that we decided to go ahead with the event. It was a perfect day weather wise and it was a wonderful opportunity for country folk to see each other and visit our trade stands for clothing and equipment before the autumn country sports season begins, while newcomers enjoyed learning about everything the countryside has to offer.”

Visit The Roebuck Inn A Stunning Country Pub With An Enthusiastic Family At The Helm

W

e are the first family in almost 100 years to run The Roebuck Inn. Its myself Sara, my Husband Oli and his parents Chris and Rosie, as well as our two daughters Chloe and Olivia-Rose.

We have three months to make this work otherwise this beautiful country pub will become another property development and myself, the fantastic team and the local community do not want this so we are putting our all into making this week. The owners, Dr Peter Rodgers and his wife, believe in us so have invested everything they have into us to make this work. We got the gig when our current landlord and lady of our house in Hayling Island recommended us to Peter, and we visited the following day to view it. After falling totally in love with the place (and setting the fire alarms off whilst cleaning it and meeting the lovely wickham fire station boys) I hired an amazing team to work with us who worked tirelessly for free with us to get us up and running to open on the 1st of September. We will have all the relevant licenses in place by October 1st to be able to sell alcohol daily (sadly the previous tenants let the premises licence slip so that's been challenging) but we are all like one massive family here and cannot wait to see what the future holds. Be sure to pop in and say hello! Tel: 01329 832150 Facebook: roebuckwickham The Roebuck Inn, Droxford Rd, Kingsmead, PO17 5AY Photography courtesy of Kate Hemwood Photography

Capture the enchanting beauty of autumn in the South Downs National Park

G

olden caramel fields, rusty red leaves, purple heathers and gorgeous pink sunsets – all the spectacular colours that make autumn special.

As the South Downs National Park prepares to put on its annual dazzling display, people are being encouraged to capture the enchanting beauty of autumn as the deadline looms for this year’s Photography Competition. The contest launched in June and, with the clock counting down to the deadline of 23 October, the changing of the seasons is a great time to explore the National Park with a camera. The contest is offering a first prize of £250 to the amateur or professional photographer who best captures this year’s theme of ‘My tranquil haven’. The top prize for the adult category will be £250, with a runner-up prize of £150 and third prize of £50. There will also be a wildlife sub-category, with judges looking for images capturing the amazing wildlife of the South Downs and the winner in the adult

22

category will receive £100. Meanwhile, there will be two further categories for budding young photographers – 10 years and under and 11 to 17. There will be a winner for the main theme of ‘My Tranquil Haven’, as well as best wildlife image, and the winner of each of these categories will receive a Colombia outdoors rucksack and a Colombia beanie. Award-winning photographers Rachael Talibart and Finn Hopson are returning once again to judge the 2020 competition and the panel welcomes acclaimed Lewes-based photographer Carlotta Luke. Carlotta said: “I am so pleased to be part of the judging panel this year. I love the South Downs and am looking forward to seeing photos that celebrate the feeling of tranquility our national park can give us. As well as beautiful photos of the landscape and wildlife, I would love submissions showing people engaging with and enjoying the park. I also cannot wait to see what the young photographers send in!” Find out more and download the entry form at www.southdowns. gov.uk/enter-the-south-downs-photo-competition/

DISCOVER BOTLEY

Botley A SHORT HISTORY

T

he little market town of Botley was once home to 18th century radical journalist William Cobbett, who was one of the Industrial Revolution's most committed agitators, a famous journalist and radical politician. He called the town home between 1806 and 1820, living in Botley House, a massive property opposite Botley Mills which was demolished in the mid 19th century, although some outbuildings remain. Cobbett loved the little market town as it contained 'everything that he loved and nothing that he hated!', he once described Botley as 'the most delightful village in the world'. It is hard to disagree with Mr Cobbett as you wander down the High Street, which has a distinctly Olde Worlde, country feel to the place, with pubs and eateries dotted along the High Street. The buildings, some dating back to the 17th Century, certainly transport you to a bygone era with their columns and sash windows. However, Botley has been around much longer than the 17th Century. A settlement first appeared during the 10th Century, when the Romans built a road from Chichester to Southampton, crossing the River Hamble just south of present-day Botley. The settlement was known in Saxon times as 'Bottaleah' ('Botta' was most likely a person, while 'Leah' is a Saxon word for a woodland clearing). Some time prior to the Norman conquest during the 11th Century, a gradual rise in sea level meant that travellers found the river easier to ford further north of the original Roman crossing. This new crossing place provided a new focal point for the village, which in 1086 was listed in the Domesday book as 'Botelie' and included two mills and had a population of less than 100. As previously mentioned, The Domesday Book in 1086 is the earliest documentation showing this site to have been used for milling. The site was part of the Manor of Botley and owned by Ralph de Mortimer, a French nobleman who fought on the side of King William I at the Mills Battle of Hastings. Botley The mills remained

with the Mortimer family until the early part of the Fourteenth Century, when manor and mills were held on their behalf by a family who had taken on the name of Botley. During the English dissolution of the monasteries (1536 to 1539) the Manor of Botley and hence the mills was given to one Thomas Wriothesly who was a commissioner of Henry VIII and later was made Earl of Southampton. The third Earl died without a male heir and the manor, including Botley Mills, passed by marriage to the Dukes of Portland. For about the next two hundred and fifty years, the Portlands leased the Mills to various tenant millers. Britain’s involvement in the wars of Europe in the second half of the Eighteen Century caused a significant increase in the population along the south coast of England. The demand for flour in the area rose with the increase in population and in 1757 plans were drawn up for the expansion of “His Grace the Duke of Portlands Mills at Botley.” The present centre building gets its appearance from this date. In 1838 the site was bought by W and J Clarke and the Mills. As well as grinding and trading cereals, the company also traded in coal, importing it in by barges which came up the River Hamble at high tide. Grain was also imported this way until 1914. For a short time between 1830 and 1848 paper was also manufactured on this site. In 1921 the Botley Flour Milling Company Limited was formed and by 1928 control of it was sold to the Appleby family and remains in their ownership today. Commercial white flour production continued at Botley until 1990 and stoneground flour until 1993, when for economic reasons production ceased. So, with a rich history and lots to see and do in Botley, what's keeping you from going?

Truth is, I am afraid to say, I cannot dance.

I started The Dancing Woodman in March 2018 and I enjoy making handmade modern rustic, industrial looking furniture using recycled wood. I initially started this as a hobby alongside full time work, a 12 year career in Fashion Retail Management. The passion for this got the better of me, as I love what I do so I decided to take the jump and do this full time as a career from January 2020. Since then the business has grown, moving from my shed and now into my second workshop in the space of 6 months,

My aim is to make quality, individual rustic looking pieces that make a statement in your home. All timber is locally sourced and recycled. All items are handmade by us from our workshop in Botley, Southampton. Please message us for bespoke, made to measure items that you would like. We are always looking for a new challenge so if you have an idea that you would like me to make then please feel free to contact. thedancingwoodman.com

COMMUNITY Meon Valley Lions CLub

JESSIE KEANE QUEEN OF THE UNDERWORLD A MILLION BOOKS SOLD

Out and about in your area Meon Valley Lions were getting concerned about our lack of visibility in the community over recent months. Did everyone know we were out there to help those in need at this difficult time? Never being a group to shy away from a challenge, we have run a programme of communication sessions in our local communities: Wickham, Swanmore and Bishops Waltham. During our programme we met some old friends, but also had the opportunity to talk to members of the community who were not fully aware of the range of charitable activities Lions undertake. It also made them think a little more about anyone they knew who could do with a helping hand. Our key message has been, who are the Lions, what do we do and most importantly do you know anyone who would benefit from our help? Supporting the local community We have supported many causes over the recent months from providing planters for a local nursing home to helping families with finance for wheelchairs. Please get in touch if you need help and well do our best to support you. Minibus The minibus is available to support local groups and we have put all the measures in place to ensure we can operate the service safely. Lions usually drive but at times we cannot so additional volunteers give us a hand. If you feel you could help out occasionally by driving the minibus, please contact John Sharpe on 01489-892750. Charity donations As you can imagine, we are looking at different ways to fundraise so we can support the local community. If you would like to make a donation an easy way to do this is simply text: LIONS to 70490 to donate £3 OR if you would like to donate between £1 and £20 text LIONS followed by your donation amount e.g. to donate £5 text LIONS 5 or to donate £10 text LIONS 10. Texts cost your chosen donation amount plus one standard network rate message. This is also a great way to donate and it won’t cost you a penny! If like many of us, you are using Amazon to do your shopping, you can help us raise money by simply changing your settings and Amazon will donate every time you make a purchase through your account. Go onto https://smile.amazon.co.uk and select Meon valley Lions Club. Why not join us: We are a happy group of appropriate 30 members (not to forget partners) who work and play hard so, if you’d like to join Meon Valley Lions Club please check out our website. COMMUNITY Fareham Rotary Club

While the ongoing Covid-19 crisis has forced the Primrose Piano For those looking further ahead the planned “10th anniversary” festival will now be held from 9-12 September 2021 when guests will include clarinettist Michael Collins, guitarist Laura Snowden and BBC Young Musician Strings winner 2018, cellist Maxim Calver.

Who mentioned Christmas?! We know it’s a long way before Christmas but the Rotary Club of Fareham, along with other Rotarians across the UK, are actively involved in sending presents to disadvantaged children many miles away. This year, with the virus problems worldwide, these children particularly need an extra hand from caring people at Christmas. Children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania will receive shoeboxes from us and YOU can help. Either make up the gift yourself in a shoebox for a boy or girl in one of four age groups, and the contents should be new. You can include items such as hats, gloves, scarves, socks, flannel, toothbrush and paste, soap, hairbrush and maybe a soft toy or educational book or game. A leaflet explaining everything is available for download, on our website https:// rotarycluboffareham.btck.co.uk As international lead for the Rotary Club of Fareham, Jon Richards, says “You don’t have to include all the items listed. Our aim is to put a smile on the faces of children who might not otherwise receive any presents this Christmas. We need to send them out early to be in time for the festive season.” You can drop in a completed shoebox, to our Rotary Wheel House at Hill Head in Salterns car park PO14 3LR. We will be there to received them from 10:00-12:30 on Friday 9th October. We will also be receiving boxes at Soberton Village Hall car park SO32 3PF from 10.00-12.30 on Thursday 8th October. Please wrap the shoe boxes in Christmas paper (lids separately) and secure them with a rubber band (and a £1 coin taped to the top towards transportation) so that customs can inspect if necessary. If you can’t make up shoeboxes you can still help by donating £17 per box and we will buy the contents and make up boxes for you. If £17 is too much, just donate what you feel, and we’ll consolidate with other donations. Please send your donation to JustGiving (search Rotary Club of Fareham) allowing Gift Aid, if you can, and we will do the rest. Time is of the essence so that we can get the shoeboxes sent out to arrive for Christmas and your help is greatly appreciated. Any queries email Jon Richards on farehamrotary.shoeboxes@gmail.com

EDUCATION On Friday, the annual Pinny Service welcomed new pupils. Led by the wonderful Godolphin Chaplain, Revd. Dr. Stella Wood, pupils and their pinnys were blessed as they were welcomed into the Godolphin Prep community.

How to help your child achieve high performance By Jane Gandee, headmistress of St. Swithun’s Winchester We used to think that we are all born with a certain, fixed level of intelligence; that some people will achieve top grades at school and perform excellently in life whilst others will never achieve much. Today we know that the inherent lifelong plasticity of the brain means that we all have the potential to become cleverer and to perform at a high level given enough time and the right circumstances. While some children naturally acquire the thinking skills, values, attitudes and attributes needed for a lifetime of success, many don’t. They need to be taught explicitly how to recognise, practise and embed these factors, and this happens most effectively in a partnership between parents and school. Two years ago St Swithun’s joined the High Performance Learning (HPL) international family of schools which was founded by Professor Deborah Eyre. Through her work with gifted individuals, she identified the thinking skills and values that high performers have in common. There is much overlap with the attributes which the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) lists as the most important for today’s children to acquire for the future: solving complex problems; critical, creative and flexible thinking; managing, co-operating

A Pinny Service to celebrate the start of term at Godolphin Prep

This Autumn Term will bring celebrations of the Harvest and School Nativity, both much anticipated events by all. This year the events will be broadcast virtually, but no doubt still be surrounded by enthusiasm and community spirit. There is a definite buzz at the Prep as pupils and staff are excited and eager to be back together and ready to explore the year ahead.

On Tuesday 8 September, Godolphin Prep enjoyed a safe return welcoming their pupils back to School. Whilst this year will be slightly different, with pupils staying in class ‘bubbles’, Head Julia Miller commented ‘it is nice to see the Prep busy and full of life again after such a long time away’.

Godolphin Prep, let your child discover who they want to be.

and negotiating with people; demonstrating emotional intelligence; being serviceorientated and being confident in judgement and decision-making. Through the HPL initiative, children as young as three years old at St Swithun’s begin to recognise and explore these concepts in an age-appropriate way and to apply them across all areas of the curriculum throughout their school career. So what can parents do to encourage their children to develop the necessary values, attitudes and attributes? Well, research shows that a parent’s educational experience, beliefs and values affect their child’s own selfconcept, interest in school and achievement. A parent who tells their child that they themselves were hopeless at languages, for example, gives the impression that languages are unimportant or impossibly difficult. Their child internalises this, assumes that they will struggle so there is no point in studying which leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Similarly, if a parent gives up tasks halfway through because they can’t do them, their children learns not to persist in the face of difficulty.

by example, believe that with effort their child is capable of high performance in multiple areas, and have conversations that reinforce the importance of a good work ethic, continuous improvement and trying your best.

The most important things that parents can do to help their child succeed are lead

To find out more or to visit Godolphin, please visit www.godolphin.org.

Why does academic achievement matter? Because children who do well at school and then at university are, statistically speaking, more likely to have greater wealth, better health and happiness, and to make a greater contribution to society. Research shows that exceptional intelligence is not a particularly good indicator of exceptional performance in life. But the right values and attitudes are. It is therefore crucial that parents and the school work together. St Swithun’s is an independent school for girls in Winchester, educating day students aged from 3 to 18 and with boarding for girls from age 11. Jane Gandee is head of the senior school.
