Guide
dog puppies Titch and Kyla have spent the summer settling into their new homes in Hampshire
They left the Guide Dogs’ National Centre in Leamington Spa a few months ago and travelled to the region to live with their volunteer puppy raisers, where they’ll stay and train for around 12 months.
Puppy Raisers look after puppies for their first year until they start their guide dog training, teaching them basic commands and introducing them to different social environments, with essential costs covered, including food and vet bills. The sight loss charity is now wanting to expand its puppy raising scheme and is appealing for volunteers in the Meon Valley, so that more pups can go on to become life-changing guide dogs.
Georgina Wingham, a puppy development advisor for Guide Dogs said:
“Titch and Kyla are among our latest recruits to join our puppy raising scheme in Hampshire. Titch, a yellow Labrador cross golden retriever, is living with Puppy Raisers Alan and Jacqui Falder and is their 2nd pup, while Kyla, a black Labrador cross golden retriever, is with first-time Puppy Raisers Catherine, Robert and Charlee and has settled in really well with
their pet dog Martha. “Both puppies are in loving homes, but we need more local volunteers who’d be happy to help us.
“Being a Puppy Raiser is a long-term commitment but it’s exciting and very rewarding. There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when the puppy you’ve looked after becomes a qualified guide dog.
“Ideally, we need people who are mostly at home and can spend time with the puppy to develop and socialise them. This involves things like taking the puppy to different environments such as cafes, shops, on public transport, and other places a guide dog owner might go to.
“It’s not always easy but you won’t be doing it alone. We’ll provide all the training and support you need, so you’ll be well equipped to care for your puppy when they arrive.”
Alan & Jacki said “You will really enjoy it, especially seeing them grow and achieving their potential and being part of the journey to changing someone who has sight loss’s life. The milestones come quickly”.
All being well, Titch & Kyla will qualify as working guide dogs at around two years of age.
If you’d like to find out more about becoming a Puppy Raiser for Guide Dogs in Hampshire, please do get in touch. With your support, we can help train more life-changing guide dogs for people in the UK living with sight loss.

Investing for children –your options
Investing on behalf of your children or grandchildren could help them graduate debt free, get a foot onto the property ladder, or benefit from an additional income stream.
There are several options to consider, including Junior ISAs, junior pensions, certain types of trust and, for older children, Lifetime ISAs. The right solution for you will depend on your family’s needs.
All the below options come with tax implications for the donor, so it’s important to seek financial advice.
Junior ISA
The Junior ISA must be opened by the child’s parent or legal guardian, but anyone can contribute up to £9,000 per tax year.
Investments inside a Junior ISA are free from income tax and capital gains tax (CGT).
Junior pension
A junior pension must be opened by the child’s parent or legal guardian, but anyone can contribute up to £2,880 (net) per tax year. Contributions benefit from 20% income tax relief.
Bare trust
A bare trust is a useful option for those wishing to retain some control over how the funds are used.
Unlike a Junior ISA or pension, there is no limit on the amount of money that can be invested in a bare trust each year.
Discretionary trust
A discretionary trust can offer greater flexibility and control, as trustees have discretion over how and when the funds are paid out. Discretionary trusts are more complex from a tax perspective, with potential charges on trust income and gifts to the trust.
Lifetime ISA
For older children, a Lifetime ISA can help provide for their first home or retirement. The account holder must be between 18 and 39 years old and can pay in up to £4,000 a year until age 50. The government will add a 25% bonus.
The account holder can withdraw money from age 60 or to buy their first home. If withdrawals are made for any other reason, a 25% charge will apply.
Next steps
Choosing between these options isn’t easy, and that’s where getting some financial advice comes in. By understanding you and what you want to achieve, we can recommend an investment solution that’s right for you and your family.
We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

Well, it is amazing to think that Christmas will soon be upon us again! Our Christmas programme is as follows. We very much hope you will join us. On Tuesday 3/12 at 2pm at the Wickham community centre. Kay Corke is giving a talk entitled “He’s behind you!”. Kay is very much appreciated in our community, and we greatly look forward to hearing from her.( I believe it is about pantomime). On 17/12 at 2pm, same venue, Glynn Edwards is again organising a Christmas very light hearted quiz. We very much enjoyed his presentation last year. Both Kay and Glynn are members, and it is excellent when we can offer home grown speakers. We meet every first and third Tuesday at 2pm at the Wickham Community Centre during the lecture season. Everybody is welcome. Guests will get an especially warm welcome. (Guests pay £2 to defray speaker costs.) Tea and biscuits are provided after the talk, and we always have preloved books for charitable sale.

Supply and planting large specimen trees and shrubs
This year she’d been so smugly organised. And not just because the supermarket ‘Festive’ aisle had appeared in August.
No, she’d stocked up on cards, crackers and wrapping paper in the sales that had started with unseemly haste on Christmas Eve last year. She thought that, sadly, Gen Z would never experience the thrill of the January Sales; thronging through the department store doors as they opened on January 1st. Nursing a hangover that threatened to wrench her head from her shoulders, she’d dodge the ugly stampede to the discounted tellys and elbow her way to the racks of ‘labels’. Returning home triumphantly with bulging bags of too-small, too-big, too-bright, too ‘much’ and barely-there clothes that would sit in her wardrobe, never worn, quietly becoming vintage.
She sighed nostalgically for those days and reminded herself to sell those clothes on Vinted.
She’d practiced the gluten-free, dairy-free, chocolate Christmas cake back before the Autumnal Equinox. And its second generation counterpart was now residing in the freezer. It was a crowd pleaser; dark, unctuous and decorated with chocolate stars and edible glitter. More importantly, it catered for the fruit-cake haters, the marzipan sneerers and the various dietary requirements of all those who would, in fact, be far too full to eat it at afternoon tea on 25th December. Still, it would make a nice table centrepiece.
The shallots were pickled by the end of British Summer Time. (She’d always thought that extra hour in bed on the Sunday morning after the clocks went back was dearly bought by the dark evenings that followed.)
The ‘care package’ of Christmas cards, wrapped gifts and, most importantly, Maltesers had set sail to the Southern hemisphere before Halloween.
By Guy Fawkes, she’d made her own mincemeat and decided that she really wasn’t going to bother with all that faff next year. Although, after maturing for a few weeks, the mincemeat smelled so good that she decided the faff might be worth it after all.
By the time that Strictly had waltzed and cha-cha-d its way around the Blackpool ballroom, she’d made and frozen the pastry for the mince pies. And whilst she watched celebrities on their annual jungle camping trip, covered in cockroaches and eating things that she would rather they didn’t, she wrapped the presents.
Finally, she allowed herself to turn on the Christmas movie channel whilst she baked batch after batch of mince pies and pondered, as she always did, that it was a lot of work and that next year she might just buy some.
By Advent the presents were wrapped, the tree was up, the lights twinkled
and, as she put the wreath on the door, she ticked off the last box on the virtual list in her head. Done.
As she looked around at her handiwork, she expected to be enveloped by an enormous sense of wellbeing and achievement. Instead, she wondered what she was going to do now. December stretched before her without a tsunami of shopping, wrapping, decorating and baking to be shoehorned into the usual calendar of festive socialising. How was she going to feel Christmassy without all that stress? Things looked bleak.
December should be a time of panic; running to the shops for last minute ingredients, waking in the night and remembering the stash of presents yet to be bought and wrapped, wondering just how she was going to fit all that baking, making and sheer Christmas-ing into three and a half short weeks. How could Christmas truly be enjoyed without the pressure and the overwork?
She was brought out of her reverie by Himself. “Where are the mince pies?” He was rootling around in the cupboards, opening and closing doors, peering around the porridge oats and over the tinned tomatoes. Himself had already munched his way through the pre-Yule rations – the rest of the mince pies resided in the freezer, hidden behind the aforementioned gf, df cake (the one destined not to be eaten on Christmas day).
His look of disappointment tugged at her heart as she heard herself say, “In the freezer – but you can’t have them, it’s not Christmas yet...”
But wait! Herein lay her salvation!
She hurriedly retrieved the frozen mince pies, microwaved a couple for Himself, divided up the rest and announced. “I’m going to take these into work and you can drop those around to the neighbours. I need to get to the shops pronto for ingredients so I can make more pastry. And maybe some lemon curd for tarts.” She twittered excitedly.
Crafting ideas were trooping into her head thick and fast too; “I’m going to make the adjustable crowns I saw in a magazine.” My how she hated those slippery things that came in crackers.
“I’ll have to get the felt, some Velcro, jewels to decorate...” They’d be so lovely and time consuming! “I might even embroider them,” she added gleefully. She chirped, “And the crackers themselves – why don’t I make those?” They’d be fiddly and take ages... excellent!
“Oh, yes – and I’ll have to make more mincemeat, which will take a couple of weeks or so to mature. I’ll probably be baking right up to Christmas Eve!” she exclaimed happily.
With a delighted, “I doubt I’ll get it all done in time!” she grabbed a handful of shopping bags and hugged a bemused Himself, before disappearing out of the front door. She paused for a moment, mentally surveyed the new tick list in her head and sighed with contentment.

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)
Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life.
But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.
Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.
From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.
Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.
The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.
What is Ultra Femme 360?
Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.
Feel good…
Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?
This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.
Does the treatment hurt?
We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.
We were one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.
Book your treatment today. We should all feel good about our vaginas.

Fabulous Festival Events at Jubilee Hall this Christmas!
Finest family theatre is coming to the Jubilee Hall, Bishop’s Waltham on Saturday 21st December. Join us for a Christmas treat with a production of The Snow Queen.
Or as she might say herself: "Now then! We will begin... When the story is done you shall know a great deal more than you do now".
This classic interpretation of the Hans Christian Andersen tale is bought to you by Quantum Theatre who performed a stunning version of A Christmas Carol for us last Christmas. With songs, music and projection the company will entrance children and families alike.
Kay, and his dear friend, Gerda, are devoted to each other but one day a splinter from a demon's mirror lodges in Kay’s heart, turning him cruel and cold – and soon the Snow Queen passes, whisking Kay away to her icy palace in the North Pole.
No one knows what’s happened to him, but the heartbroken Gerda decides she must set out to find him. A long and dangerous journey ensues and she eventually reaches the Snow Queen’s palace. But can her love save Kay and melt his cold heart? The Snow Queen is at Jubilee Hall on Saturday 21st December. Doors open at 2.00pm with the performance starting at 2.30pm. Refreshments will be available including mulled wine to keep the December chills at bay. Tickets available at www.bwfestival.art and at Willows Pet Supplies, High Street. And then comedy and disco!

100g Armagnac soaked prunes
8 rashers of bacon
20g thyme
50g chestnuts
FOR THE MUSTARD MAYONNAISE
100g good quality mayonnaise
50g Dijon mustard

METHOD
These tasty bites were created by Tom Shepperd, Head Chef, Monty's Inn, The Montagu Arms, Beaulieu. Tom suggests accompanying them with Mustard Mayonnaise. Amount can easily be increased depending on number of guests and whether these are to be eaten as a starter or canapés accompanying drinks.
Cut 4 prunes in half and place each half on a sausage and wrap in a bacon rasher. Cook in the frying pan then place in the oven for 5-7 minutes until crispy. Place in a bowl and finish with grated chestnut and thyme leaves. Serve alongside mustard mayonnaise.

Santa is on his way
The Meon Valley Lions Club is busily preparing Santa’s sleigh for his trip around the Meon Valley throughout December. Extra Elves are being approached to help him, plus drivers for our minibus and sleigh. If you would like to join in the fun, please get in contact. The rewards are great; not only seeing the faces on the children who stay up to meet him, but the Elves are also known to drop into a local hostelry at the end of a busy shift.
Why not join us?
If you’d like to join the Meon Valley Lions Club, drop us a line via our website: Meon Valley Lions Club (CIO) - Feedback welcome. It’s not all work, we have plenty of fun too, organised by our social committee. If you’d like to help us drive our minibus, you’ll be able to transport local people to all sorts of events.
Extra special visit by Santa to see extra special children!
It doesn’t matter where families live, if their children have additional needs it must be so frustrating for parents if their youngsters can’t enjoy or cope with the noises, flashing lights, crowds, music or pace of a busy Christmas.
Never fear, Coco’s Coffee Shop in Fareham is run by caring elves in the form of Jackie Avis and her team, who have organised something special to help because they care! In particular Jackie says “I think it is important for EVERY child to see Santa at least once in their lives. If they can’t go to Santa events or grottos then we will make an individual peaceful time for children to come here and meet Father Christmas.”
It will be on Monday 23rd December from 5.30pm for an hour and there will be NO CHARGE! With five-minute private slots, so children can have one-to-one time with Santa, they will be able to talk to Father Christmas and leave with a very special story book and a gingerbread star.
There are no age limits and Coco’s coffee shop is wheelchair accessible. Parents will be able to take a photo of their child with Santa to remember this extra special occasion.
Jackie continued “I was asked by the parents of two autistic children if we could help by doing this and I have widened it to invite other children with additional needs too. I had a word with Santa and he told me he would be happy to do this!”
To book a free 5-minute slot for your child please call Jackie or Kendra at Coco’s Coffee Shop on 01329 600150 and let them know what special needs are involved so they can make the appropriate arrangements.
Now that’s a GIFT at Christmas from Coco’s Coffee Shop, Fareham, to you ….
What is a celebrant and how can they serve their local community?
Many people I talk to are not entirely sure either, so… you’re not alone, if you’re wondering!
A celebrant is someone you can approach if you would like to:
• Mark a particular or very special moment of time in your life, your family - or business
• Have a crafted ceremony in which you can have everything you do want and nothing you don’t
• have someone working with you and for you to create an entirely personalised and bespoke event
I specialise in ceremonies to mark the most important times in people’s lives ~ when they say, ‘Hello’, ‘I love you’ or ‘Goodbye’ to loved ones for the beginning of life, the joining of lives and the ending of life. These include but are not limited to ceremonies for Baby Naming and New Families; Weddings and Vow Renewals; Funerals, Celebrations of Life and Memorials. I offer enhancements to ceremonies, especially for weddings such as handfasting (‘tying the knot’) or sand-pouring for blended families…there are many more to choose from. I live in Alresford so can easily meet for a chat!

Even in the quietest parts of winter, our local chalk streams hum with activity. As coots and moorhens glide across the surface, one of their relatives may be hiding in plain sight. At around 23-28cm long, the water rail is smaller than these more outgoing members of the Rallidae family, but just as fond of damp places. Ponds, marshes, reedbeds, wetlands, and rivers are all potential homes for this enigmatic bird.
One reason for the water rail’s wide variety of habitats is its omnivorous diet. Although it mostly eats fish, snails, and insects, it will also snack on roots, seeds, and berries. There are even reports of water rails catching small amphibians, mammals, and birds. With its long legs, long toes, and long beak, this species is perfectly adapted for hunting and foraging on boggy ground or in shallow water.
The water rail sports distinctive colouration that makes it fairly easy to identify. Its face and underside are grey, while its back is dappled brown and black. Zebra-like stripes along its flanks lead into bright white feathers under its tail, and both its eyes and beak are a striking red. As a chick, the water rail’s black feathers make it resemble a baby coot or moorhen – the
trick is to look for a pale yellow beak instead of a red one.
Despite having snazzy plumage and being relatively widespread, the water rail is notoriously elusive. Its camouflage helps it to blend into the undergrowth, and its skittishness causes it to run for cover when startled. The odds of a sighting do increase during winter, when the UK population is boosted by visitors from the colder parts of Europe. True to their cautious nature, these migrating birds usually travel at night.
While you need sharp eyes and good luck to see a water rail, you may have a better chance of hearing one. Of their greatest hits – which include creaks, whistles, groans, and even purrs –their most common call in wintertime is known as “sharming”. Used to converse, mark territory, or express alarm, this call is a mixture of grunting and squealing that would make a piglet proud!
Since the water rail is so shy, it likes riverbanks that have lots of lush plant life. To welcome these beautiful birds, we need to allow a thick fringe of vegetation to flourish along the water’s edge. Poetry Prizewinners
Sixteen Hampshire-based young poets have been named as winners in the Tales from the Riverbank Poetry Competition. Ranging from 7 to 17 years old, the winners recently received their prizes at a special ceremony in Winchester. Their fantastic chalk stream poems can be read on the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust website (hiwwt.org.uk/winterbournes) in the form of a beautifully illustrated anthology. Congratulations to all!

Bishop's Waltham Rotary Club December 2024 News
Air Ambulance
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) is hoping to raise £3.6m through its Operation Airbase appeal to fund a move to new headquarters. They gained approval in the summer to relocate to a new home base near Southampton Airport with the aim of dramatically reducing the time it takes to respond to emergencies. Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club have supported HIOWAA in the past and, to help with this particular project we have made a donation of £1000.
Shoeboxes
Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club with your help and that of local clubs, schools and friends, have collected and sorted over 500 shoeboxes packed with presents for children in need at Christmas. These boxes will be added to over 20,000 boxes collected from around our district, which covers most of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, and parts of Dorset and Wiltshire. This year the boxes are going to Ukraine, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania, and from there they will be shipped to local Rotary Clubs who will distribute them.
Christmas Collections
Santa has been in touch, and we now have the routes all set for where he will be visiting this year, along with Roger, his brightly lit musical steam train. Again this year we have been working hard with Santa’s Elves and by visiting www.bishopswalthamrotary.org. uk you can see which roads Santa will be visiting between 6 and 8pm on our mobile routes, plus you can track Santa and Roger on their travels around the local area by following the “Where is Roger “ link.
A special thank you goes to the Bishop’s Waltham Men’s Shed who very kindly gave Santa a hand with sprucing up “Roger” ready for this year’s visits.
Like our Facebook page or take a look at our website for updates on what is going on, what we have been up to and how you can help us help others!
