uch Ado About Nothing is one of William Shakespeare’s most performed plays and this month the popular comedy returns to Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Great Barn to close the 2018 Bard at the

Barn season.

This month marks the 100th anniversary of the Advance to Victory in August 1918, a crucial turning point in history which led to the Armistice and hastened the end of the war. In Much Ado, the Prince and his entourage are returning home from the conflict, a time of joy as well as reflection. Actors will perform in period dress and the play will feature music of the early twentieth century. The Theatre wishes to thank the Royal British Legion who has provided some information which will be on display. Collection boxes will be present to enable patrons to make donations to the Legion at each performance. The play’s Director, Emma Bevan, is directing Much Ado for the first time and explains her passion for the history of the period, the strong characters as well as Shakespeare’s comedic masterpiece: “Much Ado is typical Shakespeare at his best; it is good fun, there is love, romance and of course some characters in disguise. The play is an extremely visual comedy, which means that it is easy to follow as well as enabling the audience to appreciate the witty and rich dialogue, written in such beautiful prose. The play also has a strong female character too in Beatrice, whom I admire. She is clearly ahead of her time, a young woman looking to make her way in the world; however, as well as maintaining her independence she still wants to fall in love and get married. I am sure many of us will identify with Beatrice in today’s modern world.” Titchfield Festival Theatre has chosen the play which will appeal to lovers of the Bard’s works, as it is also an excellent choice for those of our patrons who may not have seen a Shakespeare play for a long time. Emma continued, “I hope that in setting this play at a time of hope and looking forward, we have stayed true to the dark edge of this comedy as it is still as funny, giddy and delightful as Shakespeare intended.” 8

picturesque vineyard nestled amongst the stunning Hampshire countryside at the foot of the Meon Valley. With exclusive use, the relaxed and unique venue is the perfect place to take your vows and celebrate your new journey as a married couple. If you dream of a romantic outdoors wedding, then your dreams have come true! The wooden gazebo sitting amongst the vines is the most beautiful location to hold an outdoor ceremony. The vineyard has recently made some updates to the venue to provide an indoor ceremony room and breath-taking backdrops. Amid the vines sits the Old Winery and courtyard, beautifully renovated into a rustic barn perfect to hold your wedding breakfast and evening reception. With original wooden beams, chandeliers made of vintage crystal cut wine glasses and 10ft oak doors, this room holds the characteristics of the old Winery it once was, but is also the perfect canvas to transform for each wedding. HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE

The Forum talks with Fred Dinenage MBE

He lives with his wife and their rescue cat in Hambledon. So, does he sail? Fred laughs, “Only if it’s on someone else’s boat! We’ve lived there for more than forty years and we love it. We have our favourite haunts like a restaurant in Denmead called Barnard’s. David is the chef there and his food is superb.” How did Fred find himself in television? “I owe it all to Annie Nightingale. I was a Midlands journalist longing to live by the sea.You should remember that jobs were plentiful and of course there were only two channels! Annie Nightingale worked for Southern TV and they were looking for a young man to be in a new programme called ‘Three Go Round’ so I got an audition. At the time I was living in Brighton, sharing a flat with five friends. We’d been out the night before and had a good time, so I missed the morning train and didn’t show up for the audition! On the Sunday morning the producer, Angus Wright, who happened to be passing, knocked on the door and not only thoroughly told me off, but gave me another chance. I got the job and a seven -week contract turned into fifty-five years!” During that time Fred became one of the hosts, along with Diane Keen, of the longest running ITV children’s programme ‘Three Go Round’. “In 1966 Jack Hargreaves was one of the Directors of ITV as well has host of his own programme ‘Out of Town’ He was incredibly influential. I did the pilot for ‘How’ and was determined to be professional. I was very nervous and completely mucked it up – everyone was laughing at me. Jack took me to one side and said, ’Look don’t try so hard, you’ve been hired to play the prat!’ I got the job and the show ran for fifteen years. Then in the mid-nineties TVS made ‘How 2’, hosted with Carole Vorderman and Gareth Jones which ran for another sixteen years.” Fred is also well known for hosting crime programmes for Sky and as the face of ITV’s news which has a punishing schedule. “We run three news shows per night covering Weymouth to Brighton, Brighton to Southend and the Thames Valley. Two shows are recorded and one goes out live. We spend a lot of time during the day recording interviews and writing for the evening shows. I absolutely love the adrenalin rush of live TV! Along with swimming and walking it’s this job that keeps me fit!”

In such a long career has there been a memorable news item Fred was affected by? “Oh gosh, yes, the abduction and murder of little Sarah Payne. That really affected me for some time. It was so awful. I interviewed her mother, Sara, who was absolutely incredible, she’s had a stroke and was told she would never walk again but she is an amazing woman. One of the biggest challenges we faced was the Moscow Olympics. Margaret Thatcher didn’t want us to go and was not best pleased. We were told that the British Embassy was closed and if we had any issues we shouldn’t expect any help. It was a rather interesting two weeks commentating on rowing which I knew nothing about!” Are there three things Fred couldn’t live without? “That’s difficult. Obviously my fantastic family. Our rescue pets, Roy the dog and Molly our cat, who adopted us while we were at our house in Spain. We arranged to have her brought back and now she is here with us in the UK and very happy.

meet with Fred Dinenage in the foyer of Hampshire’s ITV building. He is tall, slim, tanned and fit from a recent holiday in Austria and is wearing the crispest, whitest shirt I have ever seen. It’s an impression that belies his age. He has been working for ITV since 1964 and was awarded the MBE for services to broadcasting in 2010. He could be called a legend of British television but Fred is far too modest and at times self-deprecating for that.

I do a lot of work with the RSPCA and with a small Southampton based charity called Second Chance, who do amazing work rescuing dogs on a tiny budget. I open their summer fete every year and do as much as I can to support them. Oh yes, the third thing? Rioja definitely!” Who would Fred most like to interview? “The Queen without a doubt. What an incredible life! I’d like a really open and candid interview with her, but of course she never would do that!” What next for Fred Dinenage? “To carry on working - retirement is not an option as I enjoy it too much! We love walking in Austria so I definitely want to continue going there. I’ve written books, including the biography of the Krays; so I may well write my autobiography- the only trouble is I’m not sure anyone would buy it! If I could have anything I would like my own sport chat show, mind you I thought I would never get to host the six o’clock news but I did! Whatever happens I know I am very privileged to have this job, to be so closely linked to the public who are great. People come to chat and say ‘how’ when I’m out and about. I just love that. The actor Sid James, who also had a long career, once gave me a valuable piece of advice: ‘Fred, the secret of success is how long you last. Bright stars eventually go out. You’ll go on forever’.” I’ve no doubt that will be the case for the charming Fred Dinenage. Join Sally Taylor for a Walk in the Park for Breast Cancer Haven

I

f you love walking and exploring the beautiful Hampshire countryside, you will be thrilled to learn about a rare opportunity to walk for five miles through stunning parkland not normally accessible to the public. The ‘Walk in the Park’ will take place at The Grange in Northington near Alresford on Sunday 16 September 2018 and is being organised by BBC South Today’s Sally Taylor to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Haven, Wessex. Sally Taylor says, “I love being outdoors, walking and cycling and am always looking for new places to discover so I was absolutely delighted when our friends at The Grange very kindly agreed to let us organise a sponsored walk through their unspoilt private parkland. It will be such a treat and all proceeds will go to Breast Cancer Haven – a local charity very close to my heart.” “We’re raising money for the Titchfield-based centre, which provides specialist and individual treatment and support for anyone affected by Breast Cancer. There are currently over 3000 people in Wessex being treated for Breast Cancer and as a survivor myself, I know only too well what a gruelling roller coaster of a ride breast cancer sufferers have to endure. Breast Cancer Haven is just that – a haven – a non-medical environment run by professionally trained breast cancer nurses and specialist therapists who will tailor a series of treatments to complement someone’s conventional treatment programme. It costs £1000 to treat each visitor and so we’re always looking for great ways to raise money to help as many people as possible. Potentially, we hope that The Walk in the Park for Breast Cancer Haven could become an annual event held in other exclusive estates and parklands throughout Wessex.”

This event is held by kind permission of Lord and Lady Ashburton, Mark and Sophie Baring. Unfortunately for safety reasons and to protect the wildlife, dogs will not to be permitted in the park. Places are limited and so registration is essential. Visit www. breastcancerhaven.org/event/a-walk-in-the-park Or telephone 01329 559295 This event is held by kind permission of Lord and Lady Ashburton, Mark and Sophie Baring. Hampshire Mum: You Can’t Keep a Good Dog Down

BY SANDRA PAGAN

ow I remember the journey back from St. Ives last year! Ten hours of stop, start, stop driving. When, in the dreary January weeks, I suggested we book the same cottage for the summer, The Husband was having none of it. “No way! Never again am I doing that journey!” came his emphatic reply. I have to confess I sulked, summer without St. Ives was inconceivable. So I stuck a pin in the map and North Devon it would have to be. What a brilliant summer it had been though. Endless sunshine, hot days and cooler nights when we could sit out in the garden until late; fabulous friends, family, festivals, operas, painting, unexpected treats, balls and barbies. Overshadowing all of this was the news that the Pagan Pup was ill, with the vets giving him only eight weeks to live. Now I appreciate that you are not all dog lovers, but if you are then you will know why we Pagans were devastated. We opted not to treat with chemotherapy, which we were told would be ultimately ineffective, and went with steroids and a conviction that the Pagan Pup should live out his days doing what he does best until such times as he couldn’t. There was a point when we thought he wouldn’t be able to experience the delights of the ‘dog-friendly’ cottage, but having survived his allotted eight weeks, by week thirteen the Pagan Pup was bright as a button on the back seat of the Trusty Renault with an earnest ‘are we there yet?’ expression. Canine family members will generally adapt to most environments just as long as they can be with you. The beaches of North Devon, I have to say, are amongst the most beautiful I have seen. Literally miles and miles

16

of sand embraced by dunes and aqua seas supporting cascading white horses dotted with surfers. But for us, the greatest delight by far this year was that Devon welcomed dogs to its beaches and the Pagan Pup embraced the whole salty seadog vibe. He lounged around in the shade of the beach tent, walked for miles along the sands, dug enormous holes and went for cooling dips. Some folk took their dogs out on surf boards but that was a step too far, besides Star I was on a mission to teach Tiny Dancer, (his lovely GF), to surf. She reluctantly slipped into her wetsuit and looked stunning (I was relieved I’d left mine in the car). I could just hear the comments. ‘‘Blimey, what’s this little and large? The fat one’s yours mate’’. No, I was better off on the beach with Pagan Pup. So accompanied by Star II they trotted off to the sea. The Husband awoke from his slumber and, not to be out done, yawned and said,” I’d best get in there myself “. Now our beach tent is reasonably roomy, but it struggled to contain The Husband’s clothing removal contortions under the towel. “Ooops, sorry you weren’t meant to see that”. No indeed… “I’m sure this wetsuit shrank when you washed it, Sandra. It’s a bit snug. Zip me up, will you?” Still looking a fine figure of a man, he minced his way to the pounding seas and then, some three hours later, came staggering back across the sand. Proof, if it were needed, that not only can you not keep a good dog down, but you can’t keep an old one down either! Sandra Pagan

SOCIAL PRESCRIBING

THIS IS MY PERSONAL STORY LIZ RUTHERFORD

W

T

his is my personal story. It’s hard for me to remember just how bad I used to feel with my particular chronic illness. Deep fatigue: vision, movement and concentration not working properly. Everything was just so difficult and it was often an uphill battle to simply get through the day. Every chronic condition brings its own continual pain or discomfort. I’ve got Multiple Sclerosis . But now my daily life is so much better, I can hardly believe it. And I want to share the good news about a natural product which has so alleviated my symptoms. It’s called colostrum. It’s the pre-milk product that all female mammals give to their offspring to set up the body’s immune system. Ancient medicine calls it the Miracle Food. My experience totally agrees with this. I have been taking very high purity colostrum for 18 months and here’s the results that I personally have experienced. • Chronic fatigue has disappeared • Used to be able to walk 0.7 miles before collapse. Now can walk up to 6 miles throughout the day Improved vision and powers of concentration • Mood brightening • Very rare coughs, colds or other minor illnesses • Improved fitness and muscle strength Some people say they use colostrum for general well-being. My husband, Freddie, has been taking premium colostrum for a year now and swears by it. He says he has no more aches and pains, that his mood and energy levels are much higher and that he enjoys better sleep and so forth. “The point is”, he says, “colostrum seems to help my body heal, repair and maintain itself. It seems to have a powerful effect on my immune system”. We’ve done some research and found there are hundreds of scientific papers about this natural product. To receive an information pack, or If you wanted to chat and find out more, please contact: Liz on 07507 489345.

ith the massive burden that the NHS face daily, many organisations are setting up to work in conjunction with NHS services. The show will have advice and information from charities, health care professionals, legal & finance services, care providers, alternative therapies and much more. The show will not just be about getting old it is about having the knowledge to make better choices for you and your family should the need arise. At Lapis Care our aim is for our aging community to still live the lives that they chose. Lapis Care are also co-hosting a charity quiz night with Shedfield Lodge on October 13th at Waltham Chase Village Hall. The event will be to raise money for ‘Winnies Hope’ which is a charity that has been set up by Shedfield Lodge. POTS & PLANTERS FROM HAMBROOKS OF TITCHFIELD

Pots and planters Big, bold and beautiful. Modern garden designers tend to lean towards this vision when asked to use pots and planters to create architectural interest in clients’ gardens. Historically, ornate traditional planters made in the beautiful materials of marble, cast iron and lead have long been used in gardens. Although in their heyday, these types of planters sat proud and majestically on the gates of country houses or adorned large sweeping terraces. Beauty of the material More often than not these planters remained empty, with their owners seemingly happy to allow the beauty of the material speak for itself. There is a lesson here somewhere. Pots and planters look great overflowing with the bright colours of seasonal flowers, or helping to show off a specimen shrub. However, the effect of a beautifully made pot in the less expensive material of clay, can often make a bigger impact. The humble flowerpot The Egyptians were the first to make use of clay producing the humble flowerpot to move their plants about. Of course, in our more recent centuries, it is the Greeks who are more famous for their beautiful terracotta pots. Also, the Cretans have long used their local clay to make big pots to store grain, olives and olive oil. Earthy tones Authentic Cretan pots are fired up to 1150c, which means they can withstand the most brutal of our winter frosts. So in recent decades these very same pots, in all shapes and sizes have been finding their way to our shores. With their earthy tones of rust and tan, they have become increasingly popular as features in both the traditional and modern garden. Modern Lines For the more adventurous the huge range of frost resistant fibreglass pots is increasingly popular with people wanting something a little different. Not only can you have any shape or size to suit your garden, you can choose any colour under the rainbow and they come in a variety of finishes. Fibreglass pots are strong, lightweight and durable and planted with a colourful display of plants add a touch of class to your contemporary or courtyard garden. Because they are so light, these fibreglass planters are easy to move, which allows for more experimental positioning. These planters are particularly useful in the northern areas of the garden where you can use them to help to brighten a dark or shady spot. Finally, they are relatively inexpensive. Finishing touches No matter what material or style suits your tastes and garden, pots and planters help to add the personal finishing touches to your outdoor space. Frame the borders of patios, terraces and balconies or use planted with small trees or specimen plants to add height to small courtyards or gardens. You can plant with evergreens, colourful seasonal plants, trees and bulbs. The choice is yours. Hambrooks of Titchfield www.hambrooks.co.uk 01489 572285

EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB ANNUAL SHOW – 12TH AUGUST

D

espite Mother Nature trying to frazzle our flowers and shrivel the vegetables, the Village Doors opened to reveal of wealth of home grown vegetables, beautiful flower arrangements, specimen blooms, roses with glorious scents, sweet scented herbs, all to be ‘oohed and aarghed’ over. These tables were complemented by displays of home made produce, marmalade, fruit jellies, cakes, tartlets and so much more. The Children’s section revealed the ever popular ‘Monsters’, a very imaginative 80 cms (approx.) ‘Giraffe’ formed from a piece of elder and the tallest sunflower nodded its head cheerfully at everyone who passed by. An innovative addition to this year’s show was a history of the village dating back to Victorian Times. Photographs and slides have been collated and put on a revolving ‘loop’. It was fascinating to suddenly hear…Oh look, there is Grand-dad or Great Aunt so and so. Pictures showed the village when it flooded, the Home Guard during the War, and the variety of shops which have long since disappeared. A lovely amble down memory lane. David Lewin, Chairman of the Garden Club introduced a new ‘prize’ a silver salver in recognition of the contribution made by John Davies, who for years has contributed so much to the Garden Club. This was awarded to 15 year old Rebecca Bate for her contribution in the arts and crafts sections.

And finally a few words from Fred

I thought you would like to see me in the flower bed having a good old sniff around. In particular, this lovely red rose which has a delicious scent that I’m quite partial to. ‘Her indoors’, has had this rose sitting quite happily in a pot for some time and was bought to support Help for Heroes. She does put some manure around it in the Spring which it really likes. Anyway, That’s all from me for the moment as I am going back indoors - its rather hot for me inside my fur coat! he flower beds along the Palace Walls and the Old Station Roundabout were planted on the Spring Bank holiday weekend by a small group of supporters of BW in Bloom. Just like your garden the flower beds need to be weeded and dead headed throughout the summer and early autumn.

We are looking for volunteers who will adopt a flower bed for the next few months to keep it looking attractive for both residents and visitors alike. The beds along the Palace Walls are not too large and you can work there whenever you have some spare time. We will supply you with a fluorescent jacket to ensure that you are visible to traffic while working. Interested? recover from scarification as it is a harsh process. Not only do they need time, but also warm, wet weather is essential too.

AUTUMN IS THE IDEAL TIME TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT CAN BE DONE

O

ften lawns take a bit of a beating over the dry, hot summer months. High temperatures and low rain-fall is not much help for lawns. In fact, warm and wet autumn weather creates the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from any renovation work carried out over the next few weeks. Plants need warmth, moisture and good levels of light in order to grow well. Usually all three of these are present over the autumn months, making now the ideal time to improve your lawn. So, you might be wondering why your lawn is looking a little worse-for-wear and what can be done about it now. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, what might be the cause? Understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. There is little point in spending time and money treating the symptoms of your poor lawn if the underlying cause has not been addressed. All that will happen is the symptom will return again next year and you’ll have to deal with it all over again!

Both scarification and aeration create ideal surface conditions for over-seeding. Unlike re-seeding, where the existing vegetation is removed completely and a new seed-bed created for the sowing of a new lawn, over-seeding works with what you already have by adding new grass seeds to your existing lawn and helping to blend areas of weak growth into other areas of your lawn more naturally. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. It is however really important to deal with any weeds before re-seeding begins. New grass plants are susceptible to the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Therefore manage the weed issue first and then get new grass plants growing. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks, however regular rain is almost guaranteed over the autumn and early winter. Any nutritional issues should also be addressed before over-seeding and autumn lawn renovation works begin. After all, your existing lawn will need all the help it can get to recover and the new seed introduced will be looking for the right nutritional support to help it develop and thrive. Applying the correctly balanced autumn fertiliser is essential to preparing your lawn for the tough winter months ahead. It helps develop the roots and will keep your lawn looking green and healthy throughout the winter without increasing the need for mowing.

Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction where the soil is so solid that it affords the grass plants no real opportunity to grow well. The compacted soil drains poorly due to the lack of air gaps within the structure of the soil itself and the grass roots find it difficult to spread, resulting in stunted growth and weak plants more susceptible to disease, drought and death. Relieve the compaction first by aerating the lawn, and then you can begin to introduce new grass plants by over-seeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking. Or for larger lawns, mechanical scarification. Not all lawns need it however, but if they do it’s really important to carry this process out before the weather gets too cold and the grass stops growing. Lawns need time to

Finally, autumn is the ideal time to apply treatments for ant’s nests in the lawn which have been a real problem in recent years. It’s important to deal with these before they become dormant over winter resulting in those unsightly mounds of soil they bring to the surface next spring as the colony increases the size of its underground nest. Specialist treatments are available to deal with lawn ants. Speak to a lawn care professional now to plan ahead for the perfect lawn next year. You might be surprised how much improvement can be made this year and you can then enjoy your renovated lawn throughout the autumn and into next season. THE DUMMER FAIR IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER, AND THIS YEAR IT’S ALL IN AID OF TRELOAR’S!

BISHOP'S WALTHAM ROTARY NEWS SEPTEMBER

T

T

he Dummer Fair has been a firm favourite in many diaries for nearly a quarter of a century, being one of the most successful charity fairs in Hampshire, and is again being held in aid of Treloar School and College.

he BW Carnival, in June, raised substantial funds for your local Rotary club to pass on to needy causes. Our thanks go out to all of you that generously donated your time and money in support of this. The main proportion of these funds is distributed to local needy causes.

This year’s Fair will be on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th October 2018 at Dummer Cricket Centre. The preview evening on the 10th will start slightly early than previously at 5:30pm and run until 9pm, and guests will receive complimentary wine upon arrival. The Fair will then be open from 9:30-3.30pm on the Thursday, with the café open for light lunches and coffees.

In addition to local causes, a proportion of our collections go to the international Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. For example, 99.9 percent of all polio cases in the world have been wiped out.Your donations also train future peacemakers; support clean water projects, and strengthens local economies.

There are 96 stalls confirmed, with 58 of them new to the Fair this year. The stalls range from crafts and food to clothing and gifts so there are sure to be plenty of items to tempt you as early Christmas gifts or just to treat yourself! A full list of all the confirmed stalls is available on our website (www.dummerfair.org.uk), and we are very proud to be supporting so many local and independent business at this year’s Fair.

One donation can save a life. A child can be protected from polio with as little as 60 cents. Our partners make your donation go even further. For every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $2. In partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the governments of the world, we will see the end of this disease. And when we do, we will know that it could not have happened without Rotary Serving Humanity, through our Rotary Foundation, and without your donations. One of the local service projects which BW Rotary club supports is an annual ‘Know Our blood pressure’ event. It happens in the King’s Centre in the High Street, and this year it was on Saturday 7th July. A stroke can have a devastating effect on anyone, at any age, and on their families. Every year, 150,000 people will have a stroke in the UK. It is estimated that up to 40% of these could be prevented by controlling high blood pressure. In conjunction with The Stroke Association, BW Rotary organises a FREE blood Pressure check. The associated picture is of a lady who returned this year after being advised last year that her blood pressure was alarmingly high. She took medical advice and was treated for the high blood pressure, averting a serious outcome. She returned to tell us how grateful she was for the service which identified her condition. She is pictured above with Rotarians Linda Treveil and John Stream. Join rotary now and make a difference. Contact: mike.berry@bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk 28

Every purchase made at the Fair will go to directly helping Treloar’s. Treloar’s is a charity based in Alton for children and young people with complex physical disabilities aged between two to 25 years old from all across the UK. The School and College provide education, care, therapy and vital independence training to enable the students to have a brighter, more independent future. Entrance to the Fair is £10 per person on Wednesday (includes complimentary wine) and £8 per person on Thursday. Parking on site is free and plentiful. For more information about the Fair, location or stalls please visit www.dummerfair.org.uk. You can also follow us on Facebook (/dummerfair), Twitter (@dummer_fair) and Instagram (dummerfair) for all the latest news and pictures.

Education WHERE GIRLS DO BETTER

ALAN NEWTON, WYVERN’S HEADTEACHER, RETIRED AT THE END OF THE SUMMER TERM AFTER 10 YEARS IN POST

A

lan hailed from a northern mining town, from a family of coal miners. He was the first of his family to go to university, and knew that education has transformed his life. After realising that he preferred teaching to academic research, Alan moved moved to Oxford University to do teacher training. He moved into leadership feeling it was the best way to widen the influence of teaching and learning. He has led Wyvern through some challenging times – with large scales changes in education policy providing challenges for staff and pupils.

I

n the heart of Southsea, Portsmouth High School has been educating girls since 1882 with an outstanding reputation for academic success. The school is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust family of schools, the leading provider of independent education for girls in the country. Girls are at the centre of everything we do and their well-being is paramount. Our teachers have an unrivalled expertise in teaching girls enabling them to discover talents and reach their full potential. The school is consistently at the top of the examination league tables in the local area and offers an impressive co-curricular programme.

Prep and Pre-School

Our Prep and Pre-School are set in wonderful grounds. Free wraparound care and an affordable fee structure make the school an ideal start for preparation for entry into Portsmouth High Senior School.

Senior School and Sixth Form

Unrivalled opportunities and a continued focus on well-being enable our girls to achieve a firm foundation for academic excellence and personal success. Girls entering our Sixth Form leave us for highly respected university courses and go on to excel in a range of careers. Visit us on our Open Morning on Saturday 6 October from 9.00am to 12.30. Join an animal adventure trail at the Prep and Pre-School and take part in exciting activities across all subjects at the Senior School and Sixth Form. Find out more at www.portsmouthhigh.co.uk

Sixth Form Open Evening

Monday 8 October from 6.00 to 9.00pm – Come and find out more about opportunities in our highly successful Sixth Form.Talk to subject specialists and explore your options for the next exciting phase of your education.

What have been Alan’s personal highlights from his time leading Wyvern? “I am proud that we have sustained our reputation as a high-attaining school, despite changes in education policy and year-on-year financial pressures. Three successful Ofsted Inspections have been gratifying from a professional perspective. In addition, I am proud of our service to the arts and our Arts Festivals have been a manifestation of the excellence that I see across our curriculum. We have complemented these with fantastic STEM events: Space Week and Maritime Week. I take great reward from the success of others – e.g.Will Emeny achieving the Secondary School Teacher of the Year Award in 2016, and Bryan Postlethwaite being a finalist in 2010. I also hope that the Wyvern 10K continues as an Olympic legacy project. Wyvern’s standing in the eyes of our professional community remains high, as we have been outwardly facing and an invaluable partner to other institutions.” As for his retirement plans, well first will be a well-earned holiday! Alan then wants to put his deep love of literature to great use with the aim of writing a novel. He want to pursue his other interests including history, archaeology, travel, music, theatre, and politics and devote more time to his incredibly supportive wife and two children, who live and work in London and Brighton respectively. www.wyverncollege.org.uk

SAXONS IN THE THE MEON VALLEY (PROVINCIA MEANWARORUM)

T

he Meon Valley was referred to in the 8th century by Bede as the Provincia Meanwarorum (Province of the Meonwara). Bede is also referred to as Saint Bede or the Venerable Bede. He was an English monk at the Northumbrian monastery of Saint Peter at Monkwearmouth and of its companion monastery, Saint Paul’s, in modern Jarrow, both in the Saxon kingdom The above image is from Bede’s ‘History of Northumbria. Bede is well of the English Church and People’. known as an author and scholar; Opening of Book l. Southern England, his most famous work, ‘Historia early ninth century. British Library Cotton MS Tiberius C.ll,f.5v;Copyright ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum’ © The British Library Board (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People) gained him the title “The Father of English History”. The Meonwara (‘Meon People’) were the Saxon and Jutish settlers who Bede described as living in the valley of the River Meon in the 8th Century AD. There were about 30 villages and churches in the Meon Valley at the time that Bede wrote his Historia. Only the church at Corhampton (built in 1020 AD, 300 years after Bede’s Historia and replacing an earlier Church) survives from the Saxon era. Other post-Conquest Churches in the Valley are built on, or close to, sites of Saxon Churches. Some have links to the Saxon era; such as the Saxon ‘four

An earlier historical connection to the Meonwara and the Provincia Meanwarorum is through Wilfrith (c. 633 – c. 709) an English bishop born to a noble family, again in the northern Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. A contemporary of Cuthbert,Wilfrith (known to us as Wilfrid) came south from the monastery at Lindisfarne and is credited with the conversion of the Southern Saxons to Christianity (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilfrid). It is thought that Wilfrith commenced this mission in the Meon Valley. The Meon Valley Pilgrimage Trail is a walk through the Meon Valley re-discovering Wilfrith’s missionary work in the Valley (see www.wilfrid-meonpilgrimage.co.uk ) In addition to the churches there are also several sites in the Valley where archaeological excavations have revealed Saxon cemeteries or settlements. How One Soldier’s Battle Brought Peace to Millions

018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, and also of the visit of a certain Bill Wilson to Winchester Cathedral. A young artillery officer sent from America to fight in France, Bill survived the war and went on to write one of the world’s best-selling books – the “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous. And on its first page he recounted the story of his wartime visit to the cathedral. Today AA remains untouched by the modern concerns for profit, waiting lists, referrals and data collection. AA meetings are free and readily available, in most cities there’s a meeting every day of the week. No details are kept of those attending – and there are no referrals or waiting lists. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Some people have already stopped when they walk through the door, others are still drinking. As the name implies, it’s anonymous so people can feel safe attending meetings. AA is about living a happy and fulfilling life sober - not just stopping drinking so support is there no matter how long people have been sober. The whole thing, including the free 24 hour helplines, is run with small amounts of money collected at meetings. There’s no charge for admission, even the tea and coffee is free. So how did Winchester in the UK find itself on page one of AA’s “Big Book”? During the final months of World War One Bill Wilson was with a US army unit en route for France and was temporarily quartered in an army camp at Morn Hill outside the city. Not in any way a religious man, he had nevertheless been profoundly moved during his visit to the cathedral when, seated quietly contemplating the future, he had a sense that some benign form of ‘higher power’ was watching over him – and that despite his fears everything would turn out well. Walking through the churchyard afterwards, he saw old gravestone dating form 1764 it commemorated a young grenadier of the Hampshire Militia who had died ‘of a violent fever contracted from drinking small beer when hot… in grateful remembrance of whose universal goodwill towards his Comrades, this stone is placed here at their expence’ explained the inscription. By an odd coincidence the soldier’s name, Thetcher, was similar to that of his great friend back home Ebby Thatcher, and he and Ebby had certainly put away more than a few small beers together … Bill returned to America only to find his life in jeopardy again – this time through his drinking. His successful career disintegrated, and he was told that he would either have to be permanently locked up or would die as a result of his alcoholism.

38

A meeting with his friend Ebby changed all that, Ebby had found a way to stop drinking with the help of The Oxford Group, a Christian Organisation. Bill was initially discouraged by this – he wanted nothing to do with God. But after trial and error he and another alcoholic, Dr Bob Smith, began to develop a programme which enabled them and other alcoholics to stay sober - no special faith or belief was required, though being opened minded to the concept of a higher power was encouraged. Together they founded what became Alcoholics Anonymous. As AA grew they decided to make a written record of the process, and Bill set to work on a book that would become AA’s handbook - he chose to start with the story of that wartime day in Winchester. We landed in England. I visited Winchester cathedral. Much moved, I wandered outside. My attention was caught by a doggerel on an old tombstone: ‘Here lies a Hampshire Grenadier / Who caught his death / Drinking cold small beer / A good soldier is ne’er forgot / Whether he dieth by musket / Or by pot’. The book became an all-time best-seller. The 25 millionth copy rolled off the presses back in 2005, and around a million are still printed and sold each year, despite the text being available free online in English, Spanish and French. In 2011 Time Magazine placed it on its list of 100 best and most influential books and a year later the Library of Congress designated it as one of the 88 ‘Books That Shaped America’. It’s available in seventy languages and there are very few people in AA who don’t have their own copy. Thomas Thetcher’s gravestone still stands in the churchyard at Winchester, although it’s a copy of the one that Bill Wilson saw on that hot August day in 1918. That stone was becoming weathered, and in 1966 was taken to the Regimental Museum where it can be seen today. People from across the world make the trip to Winchester, visit the grave and reflect on the stories of two young soldiers - Bill Wilson of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Thomas Thetcher, the Hampshire Grenadier. If you would like to know more about AA you can find our website at www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk AA has a twenty four hour helpline on - 0800 9177650 You can email AA at help@aamail.org All AA services are free.

Professional I CAN LEAVE £1,000,000 TAX FREE – REALLY?

U

nfortunately the answer to that question is usually no. The exceptions include when you leave all your assets to your spouse or to charity or when you have assets that qualify for agricultural or business property relief from inheritance tax. You may be surprised that the answer is usually no. No doubt many of you saw the news last year introducing the new inheritance tax allowance which was billed by the government as a £1,000,000 allowance. However, the new changes are not as simple as that. From 6 April 2017, in addition to the inheritance tax nil rate band (currently £325,000), you receive an additional inheritance tax allowance (known as the residence nil rate band) on your death. The allowance was £100,000 for 2017/18 but increased to £125,000 on 6 April 2018 and will increase to £150,000 on 6 April 2019 and £175,000 on 6 April 2020. However, the residence nil rate band can only be utilised if you leave your house to your direct descendants. The good news is that direct descendants includes step children and adopted children. If you have no children though, you are going to lose out.

When the allowance was first introduced, some newspapers ran articles saying that creating a trust in your Will or in your lifetime would mean you lose the residence nil rate band. Trusts in Wills are not automatically problematic, nor is gifting your house into trust during your lifetime, but it is important to review any such arrangements to ensure that you will not inadvertently pay more inheritance tax. If your house passes into trust in your Will your Executors should ensure that they take professional advice following your death because, action will often need to be taken within two years of your death to ensure the residence nil rate band is not lost. Trusts are particularly useful if, between you and your spouse/civil partner, your estates are worth more than £2,000,000. If you die with an estate worth more than £2,000,000 the residence nil rate band will reduce, eventually being lost completely. Leaving the estate of the first spouse/ civil partner who dies into trust (with the surviving spouse/ civil partner being able to benefit) or directly to descendants could be an effective way of preserving the allowance. The new allowance comes with other caveats too. For example, many people prefer to leave their house in trust until their grandchild is 25 rather than allowing their grandchild to inherit aged 5. This could mean that the allowance is lost but you have to weigh up what is more important: paying less tax or avoiding assets passing to a beneficiary too young. People worry that selling their house means they will not be able to claim the allowance. If you downsize or sell, then records should be kept of the sale as, providing the sale took place on or after 8 July 2015, you should be able to claim the allowance against the value of the property you sold. The new allowance is the biggest change to inheritance tax laws since 2007 and it is therefore vital for you to review your arrangements to ensure they are as tax efficient as possible.

If your spouse/civil partner dies before you and does not use their allowance then you can use it in addition to your own. This means that by 6 April 2020, a married couple between them could have £1,000,000 worth of inheritance tax allowances to use on their death – an inheritance tax nil rate band each of £325,000 and a residence nil rate band of £175,000 each. Hence the introduction of the residence nil rate band being billed as a £1,000,000 allowance! Some people might include a niece or nephew as well as their child as a beneficiary. Leaving your estate so your niece and daughter receive half each means you could lose part of the allowance. A simple re-write of your Will leaving your house to your daughter and your investments to your niece could be enough to stop you losing the allowance. A trust structure might also be useful here to ensure that if the value of your investments increases more than the value of your house, your daughter still benefits to the same value as your niece. 42

programme of cookery demonstrations in the temporary kitchen in the marquee. It is also rumoured that this year a demonstration of cocktail-making is to be added! More details are on the Taste of Wickham website, (www.wickhamsquare.co.uk/tasteofwickham). Here is the '(see below)' bit – Chairman of the Taste of Wickham Festival, Ben Sawyers of Meon Valley Butchers (formerly Tulls Fine Foods} says “HELP! 5,,,,Volunteers are still needed to help before and on the day – all sorts of tasks, some not strenuous at all, but all very necessary and important. So if you could spare at least a couple of hours, you will have our undying gratitude – and you might even enjoy yourself. Please help if you can.” One of the Raffle organisers, Katie Dennis-Matthews of Heming & Co says: “This year we are putting more effort into selling raffle tickets before the actual day. If you could help to sell, please get in touch with me - you will be welcomed with open arms! As ever prizes for the raffle are very welcome – but please NO fresh produce or other perishable goods as these can spoil if not claimed on the day.” Tickets will be on sale at Warwick Lane, at Heming & Co and Confiserie Verdonk in Bay Tree Walk. We look forward to welcoming you on 9th September from 10am to 4pm www.wickhamsquare.co.uk/tasteofwickham

he stalls are booked, the entertainers are rehearsing, the raffle tickets on sale and prizes arranged, volunteer helpers recruited, (but see below!) and fingers crossed for good weather. Wickham is almost ready to welcome visitors to its fifth celebratory festival. This year there will be a record number of stalls – well over 60, showing off local businesses and organisations – crammed into the picturesque medieval Square. Each business shelters under its striped square gazebo, which creates a festival atmosphere to the day right from the start. The programme of children's activities and entertainments, live music, local groups performing their musical and dancing shows keeps the audiences of all ages amused and entertained. And then there are the goats – always a popular centre of attraction! We hope and expect that the crowds who attend each year – and the many who come every year! - will enjoy the day once again. If you have not been before, where were you? You have missed a (free) treat! There is lots here for people of all ages – and their dogs. Parking is eased by the (also free) Park and Ride scheme – so popular last year that the number of buses has now been increased to speed up the process. Once again the organisers are hugely indebted to Southern Cooperative who sponsor the event and support the ever-popular

t was great to have the Big Top back, providing a spectacular home to this year’s Wyvern Arts Festival. The week, complimented by beautiful weather, kicked off in spectacular style on the Friday night with Take That tribute act, Back for Good supported by the award winning Barton Soul Band – a truly fitting opening night party. On Monday, the Wyvern Word Feast took over and saw pupils throughout the college celebrate the amazing history and variety of the English language. We were taken in a journey from Beowulf to Rap – with stops off for Shakespeare, Stand-up Comedy, Priestly and accounts from World War 1 – all set off with music from folk group the Courtiers. Tuesday belonged to the Performing Arts - a celebration of musical theatre, dance and drama presented by our Performing Arts students. During the day, pupils had taken part in a variety of workshops and presented their final pieces. There was also highlights from our Dance and Drama department, songs from musical theatre and extracts from our award-winning entry at this year’s Rock Challenge event. The Wyvern Primary Cluster took up residence on Wednesday with their Primary Spectacular – a wonderful night of entertainment that culminated in a performance from a massed choir and then everyone staying to enjoy the first half of the World Cup semi-final. The final night was our Summer Concert – always a sell out and a showcase for the very best Wyvern College has to offer from our large rank of talented musicians and singers. We were delighted to welcome back many ex-students, now all professional musicians, to form a Legacy Soul Band.We also had the Community Choir and College Choir join forces to sing excerpts from The Greatest Showman and tantalising glimpse on next year’s production of Mary Poppins. It was another fantastic festival week and testament to the enormous hard work of the director Brain Postlethwaite, the pupils and staff from the college and its primary cluster. www.wyverncollege.org.uk

Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog!

I

BY WENDY MARTIN GREEN

n the spring of 1956 Elvis Presley’s voice pierced the airways with his first hit Heartbreak Hotel quickly followed by his song Hound Dog, the same year that Peter Green opened his first little bed store on Leigh Road in Eastleigh. What many people don't know though is that ‘Hound Dog’ was actually written in 1952 and had already been recorded 250 times by various singers but it was Elvis’ smooth voice that brought it to the charts making the song a memorable part of our history. On a very much smaller scale the same could also be said of my father, Peter Green who on a local basis changed the landscape of Eastleigh when he turned his little bed shop into a massive furniture super store on Southampton Road bringing people who had never even heard of this little town flocking from miles around. At that time Peter Green was a cash and carry business and Saturdays saw a stream of customers, strapping rolls of carpet and furniture onto the rooftops of their cars, and driving their bargains away with them. The original showrooms sold all manner of tables, chairs, sofas, and beds laid out in rows, ready for ‘immediate delivery.’ Housed in an old brush factory Peter Green was a well known landmark and the largest furniture store of its kind in the South of England, and people still come up to me and talk about it. Thirty years later the business relocated to School Lane in Chandlers Ford and the old buildings were demolished to make way for the new Swan Centre. Unfortunately my father died in 1980 and never saw this move, but my mother Norah Green continued to see it through, and remained chairman until she died in 2010, after which I was happy to take over. Nowadays most items are placed on order, because of the vast array of choices in styles and fabrics we can now offer our customers, which requires many pieces to be custom manufactured. We do, however, have our very own Peter Green Hampshire Collection, many items of which are still available for immediate delivery. We still stock many of the trusted British brands such as Ercol, G Plan and Parker Knoll that could be seen in Peter Green’s first store 62 years ago but now we have added many modern lines to our collection. We have one of the largest selections of beds in the county and a huge selection of flooring too. We are proud that our family business still can play a big part in the community, and we enjoy staging fun events for our customers such as the Peter Green Spring Clean, with a fifties twist, or the Midsummer’s Night Sale which featured Shakespearean vignettes performed by the Chameleon Theatre group. We also hold networking evenings in our coffee shop for neighbouring businesses, and gallery evenings at which local artists can show their work. At Christmas we have entertainment for all the family and a Christmas Fair. We are still very much a part of the community as the old Peter Green was and we still hold dear to out hearts the principles that he taught us… value, price and service are the key and the customer come first. In honour of our sixty-second anniversary we have 62% off selected lines from the 2nd September until the 30th September 2018 and

54

we are inviting our friends and neighbours to our ‘Elvis’ Party on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September, between 11am and 3pm. There will be complimentary snacks, cake, bubbly and ‘Elvis’ will be in the building singing some of his classics at 12pm and 2pm on Sunday. Please join us because we want you to know that you are ‘Always on Our Mind!!!!’

As well as re-enactments, a medieval camp and bird of prey demonstrations, visitors to the free annual festival can meet the cows and sheep whose grazing helps to protect our heathlands. On Saturday night there is also the chance to join in a bat walk. The festival is organised by the Heathlands Reunited project – a partnership of 11 like-minded organisations led by the South Downs National Park Authority. Heaths are rare habitats, rich in wildlife and fantastic open space for families to explore. But they are under threat and would disappear completely without active management. Secrets of the Heath is a chance for people to find out how people have lived and worked the heath over thousands of years and how you can play your part today to save our heaths through the Heathlands Reunited project.

D

iscover the horrible histories and wonderful wildlife of South Downs heathland on 8 and 9 September as the Secrets of the Heath festival returns to Petersfield. Join a Saxon shield battle, come face-to-face with a highway woman and meet the snakes & lizards who call the heath their home.
