award winning kitchen makeovers

After Makeover

Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen

My Kitchen was completed last month and I am thrilled with it. Our project was a fairly large one, which involved removing a wall, stripping out the old kitchen, laying a new machined oak floor and then finally installing the new kitchen.

Ben was always on the end of the phone to provide advice and support which was invaluable. We worked together to plan the kitchen but Ben had many useful suggestions, all of which I ran with and I am so happy with the final result.

At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

RARE FINDS IN WINCHESTER!

A

fter the success of last year, The Rare Brand Market returns to Winchester’s Guildhall on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th November, and for the eighth year to Goodwood Racecourse on Thursday 22nd – Saturday 24th November.

Admission price is £10 or, with a friend, present this advertisement on the door and take advantage of the 2 for 1 offer. The Rare Brand Market likes to give back so is thrilled to announce that it is working with two regional charities which will share a proportion of ticket revenue.

So, what is rare? Wikipedia describes it as “not widely known and valued for their uncommonness”. The Rare Brand Market curates a wide range of rare brands across clothing, food, drink, jewellery, beauty, toys and gadgets, lifestyle and homeware. A brand may have great awareness in London but be considered rare elsewhere; other times, it’s a young, local brand giving you the opportunity to find unique gifts. The Rare Brand Market focuses on emerging brands, likely to have been created in the last 1 to 3 years. Come and meet the founders and hear firsthand the passion for their work!

Marian Parfitt, Breast Cancer Haven Macmillan manager said, “We look forward to working in partnership with The Rare Brand Market to not only raise vital funds but also awareness with their retailers and customers as many may know someone who has been affected by the disease. From its UK centres, this charity offers free emotional support; help with symptom control and practical advice to anyone affected by breast cancer”.

This pop-up Christmas market, now the largest on the South coast, will be open on Wednesday for extended hours. The fun is back in shopping. Come out of the cold and shop comfortably inside the magnificent Guildhall, in the heart of Winchester. Why not fix a date with friends and after shopping at The Rare Brand Market enjoy dining at one of the many restaurants in the beautiful city of Winchester. Refreshments are also available on site at the Guildhall’s Café Eighteen71.

Actors, parents and founders of The Murray Parish Trust, Sarah Parish and James Murray said "Giving back is a really important part of The Rare Brand Market's ethos, and our partnership will bring us closer still to achieving our own goal of funding a state of the art new Children’s Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton, serving much of the South of England". www.therarebrandmarket.co.uk

Southampton Philharmonic Choir return to O2 Guildhall Southampton on 1 December with a Christmas favourite. Messiah may well be the most famous of all choral works but reasons for another performance are numerous and compelling. It is a genuinely virtuoso work; requiring superb vocal technique from the chorus and soloists, a wide range of emotional expression and the ability to convey the most dramatic of narratives as well as moments of intense reflection. The fact that parts of Messiah are well known is a huge advantage to performer and listener alike - providing rallying moments of instant recognition and pure excitement. However, in such a substantial oratorio, there are always new or less familiar moments to surprise and delight the listener. Messiah was committed to paper in a mere 24 days between 22 August and 14 September 1741, and was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 to an audience of 700. Such was the demand for space that women were requested to come without hoops and gentlemen without swords. Something that the ‘Phil’ will also be requesting for this performance! Messiah is the perfect companion to Christmas and, for many, it is an indispensable part of the festive season. With music of such remarkable quality, something new and fresh is almost inevitable, especially in a performance with the world-class Hanover Band. The use of period instruments creates just the right quality of sound, whilst experienced musicians, immersed in Baroque style and techniques, bring authenticity and authority to this popular work. The choir is also delighted to welcome back the wonderful soprano, Erica Eloff, with further soloists yet to be announced. Tickets are available now from www. ticketmaster.co.uk box office 023 8063 2601 Saturday 1 December 2018 7.30pm at O2Guildhall, Southampton, see www.southamptonphil.org for more details.

DURLEY CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL - DECEMBER 14 - 16

The Festival will be hosted by Durley Church and will be open from Friday 14th December in the afternoon and during Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December, finishing with the carol service at 3.30pm on the Sunday afternoon.

BULLY BEEF & WHIZZBANGS Following the enormous success of Bouncers last year, BlackBox Theatre Company will be at St Nicholas Church, Wickham on Thursday 8th November with a specially commissioned play to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. Set on the battlefields of France during 1916, the multi-award winning Bully Beef & Whizzbangs takes a wry and often humorous look at life in a front line trench through the

IT’S NO CARDINAL SIN TO HAVE FUN WITH THE BIBLE AT TITCHFIELD FESTIVAL THEATRE

eyes of its two reluctant heroes. Smudger, a new arrival at The Front, is keen to shoot his first Jerry whilst Harry is more interested in keeping his head down, thinking of home and enjoying a nice mug of tea.

The Festival Team are hoping that all village groups, clubs, organisations and businesses would like to take part, by exhibiting a Christmas tree decorated with imagination and ingenuity to reflect the activities of their group in a festive manner.

Stuck in a hole surrounded by mud and death, how will our boys cope with the ever-present danger of being shot or blown to smithereens?

This is our first such event in Durley and we are keen to see as many local organisations and businesses represented as possible. We will be writing to all the village organisations and businesses (that we know of).

For tickets please visit www.ticketsource. co.uk/whats-on/wickham-hampshire/stnicholas-wickham/bully-beef-whizzbangs

If you are interested in taking part, please let us know by Friday 9 November by emailing gill_mulley@hotmail.co.uk.

as the boys tackle the great theological questions: Did Adam and Eve have navels? Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? And why isn’t the word “phonetic” spelled the way it sounds?

BISHOP'S WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB

Terri Crawley, director of the play explains, “The Bible has a superbly written script which is funny, tongue-in-cheek and contains plenty of intelligent wit. However, this is not a performance that aims to be offensive to religion; it is light-hearted satire and whether you are Catholic or Atheist, Muslim or Jew, Protestant or Purple People Eater, you will be tickled by the RSC’s romp through old time religion.” Since The Bible was first performed by The Reduced Shakespeare Company in the mid1990s it has received excellent reviews and this month you can enjoy it too at Titchfield Festival Theatre. However, remember, someone is watching. The Bible is yet another masterpiece of theatre from The Reduced Shakespeare Company and later this month the play is performed at Titchfield Festival Theatre.

The Bible opens on Monday 22nd October until Saturday 27th October at 7.30pm in the Acorn Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG.

The show takes us through a complete story of the Bible. It is an affectionate, irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to Final Judgment

NO REST FOR THE GARDENER! Whilst you may think that all gardening ceases once the clocks go back - and certainly the shorter days and inclement weather do take their toll - we gardeners love to think about next year. To ‘spread the word’ and keep up-to-date with our news and views, we are now on Facebook. See us at Bishops Waltham Gardening Club. A change in our plans for November’s meeting. We have now invited Kevin Hobbs from Hillier’s Nurseries to tell us all about The Hillier Experience - November 28th at The Junior School, Oak Road, SO32 1EP. Doors open 7.15pm. Members free. The Club doesn’t have a meeting in December, but all efforts go into making our AGM in January an interesting and informative event. More details next month. Meanwhile, happy gardening. www.bwgc.org.uk

EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB NEWS FROM OCTOBER

Call Trevor on 07860 560868

info@hampshirehedges.co.uk www.hampshirehedges.co.uk

The Garden Club began its Autumn/Winter season with a wonderful talk on Heritage Apples given by Chris Bird from Sparsholt College. Chris is in his 37th year at the College and he quickly proved to his attentive audience that there was nothing he didn’t know about Apples. Pictured above is Garden Club Chairman, David, enjoying tasting an apple with Chris Bird from Sparsholt College There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples, and 1,500 seedlings, resulting in a range of desired characteristics. Apples come in green, red, green and red and yellow. They are divided into categories, such as culinary, dual purpose and dessert (eaters). Culinary, as the word would suggest, are apples that can be cooked. These apples tend to be larger than dessert apples and are not immediately edible. Dual purpose apples are those that can be cooked early in the season but then become sweeter in storage. We handled the same variety of apple that Nelson would have had aboard HMS Victory. These apples were able to be kept for two years. We were told about the Hampshire Easter Orange Apple which is a variety of eating apple commercially produced by Hilliers in 1897. Hampshire varieties include the Bramshott Rectory, with the apple tree still in the Rectory garden. We were told that the largest fruit is The Howgate Wonder first grown in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight in 1916 and a single fruit can weigh as much as 2lbs. It’s good for baking, good with cheese, late flowering and frost resistant. It was explained that the definition of ‘pippen’ probably came from the Anglo-French word ‘pepin’ meaning ‘seed’ or ‘pip of a fruit’. In northern regions of England the word was used to describe a small fruit seed. The Sturmer Pippen apple is ready to eat in February and comes from the village of Sturmer in Essex. Permain as in Worcester Permain, means it is ‘pear’ shaped. We were given tips on when to feed our apples. In October with something like Maxicrop which has 35 trace elements and again at ‘bud burst’. It was also suggested that planting pink clover beneath apple trees can be very beneficial, as the flowers attract bees which in turn help pollinate the blossom. Additionally, when the foliage rots down it contributes to the healthiness of the soil. For those cider makers among you, choose varieties of apple that have a high level of tannin. All apples can make delicious cider but some apples were grown specifically for making cider, such as The Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill. For a sweeter cider try Gala, Golden Delicious or Red Delicious varieties or mix with apples that are more tart such as Pink Lady and Braeburn for a sweeter blend. We tasted quite a few apples, tasted some home made cider and fresh apple juice which rounded off the evening perfectly Pamela Peacock East Meon Garden Club Communications Officer

CONKERS BONKERS Y es I know there’s hardly any time before Christmas - no need to panic - but for me autumn can never last long enough. As if to herald the end of conker season, their cream crushed innards were rendered foamy white by the heavy rain. Leaving a white stream flowing down the road toward the drains while the golden leaves collected in slowly rotting piles. It seemed only a few weeks ago that the giant leaves of the Horse Chestnut trees opposite Chez Pagan had turned prematurely brown and the conkers pelted down, their green deceptively spiky pods splitting open to reveal natures gems within. For me there is nothing quite like the very first conker of autumn. That glorious colour luxuriously glossy and warm, and the smoothness with which it effortlessly turns in your hand. Forget gold this is nature’s alchemy and I can’t resist them. Every morning The Husband and I walk the Pagan Pup around the block, a well-trodden route that just happens to be lined with Horse Chestnut trees. On windy mornings you can see them falling fresh from the tree, why are the best ones always in the middle of the road! Yet on closer inspection there are plenty of corking conkers to be gleaned in the gutter- oh yes I’m not proud. The conker season is short though, at first The Husband doesn’t notice me dawdling along behind him, stooping every few yards to pick up another one or two- oh no hang on three maybe four. I lovingly secrete them in my pocket and once home place them in various bowls all over the house. But nature is fickle and soon, much like ones own youth, the beauty of the collected conkers begins to fade, within a day their

sheen is lost their glorious colour dulled and they lie in their bowls in a wrinkly pile. But I am fickle too so out they go and I started to collect more. By now the Husband has noticed my growing obsession. “Sandra will you stop picking them up your are bonkers. A strange old woman with a thing about conkers” He kicked the perfect specimen into the road, (still managed to grab it though).

I was clearly no more bonkers about conkers than I was last year or indeed the year before that… With nature’s beautiful bounty drying up I resigned myself to clearing the remaining leaves and to be charitable with the last of the conkers. Many a young person had passed by searching for the perfect specimen. So as I swept I lined up the last conkers of autumn on the wall, albeit slightly damaged ones as strangely the pick of the crop had disappeared! But then if they didn’t have the dedication to be up at six in the morning to get the very best of the newly fallen gems then quite frankly they deserve nothing more. Did that come out loud? Anyway all is now calm in conker bonkers land. Another season has passed and the decorative bowls in Chez Pagan have been put away until they are required to display the Christmas frippery. The Horse Chestnut leaves have been swept and bagged up for collection and all is well with the world until next year. I can rest now, although…..wait a moment …..was that the sound of a falling conker I heard ?

HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE

THE FORUM TALKS WITH JOHN CAMERON

FEATURE

John Cameron has an easy, friendly manor and is extremely grounded. He currently appears as an expert presenter on BBC’s popular antiques show Bargain Hunt as well as Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and Cash in the Attic.

B

orn in Portsmouth he attended City of Portsmouth School for Boys in Hilsea. “Growing up on an estate in Portsmouth during the seventies was quite tough, I was frequently in trouble at school and completely wasted my opportunities, however, I was very fortunate to be saved- literally saved – by an amazing teacher who took me under his wing.” “Harry Bourne was a woodwork teacher at the school and also ran the Portsmouth and Hampshire Junior Football teams. Harry got me interested in carpentry and eventually at the end of my school career got me an apprenticeship as a carpenter joiner with an old established local firm Barnes and Elliott where he himself had started as an apprentice before his National Service. To supplement my low weekly apprentice wage of £27.50 I helped my Grandfather on the family fruit & veg market stall in Portsmouth’s Charlotte Street. My Grandfather was also interested in antiques and spent a lot of time buying and selling furniture, clocks, porcelain and other interesting old items. Stripped and waxed antique pine furniture was very fashionable at the time so utilizing both my grandfather’s contacts and my carpentry skills I purchased a dip ‘n’ strip tank and set about buying, restoring and reselling antique pine.” “In my early 20s I was diagnosed with a prolapse disc in my back and was advised by the consultant surgeon to consider a less physical career than my current one unloading timber lorries at Barnes & Elliott, fruit and veg down the market or lumpy pieces of furniture in my workshop. I sought the advice of the local careers office who suggested a diploma course in antique restoration at West Dean College, however this wasn’t financially viable so instead I enrolled on a Degree course in Fine Art Valuation at Solent University in Southampton. This was the only course of its kind in Europe at that time.” HOW DID JOHN FIND HIMSELF ON TELEVISION? “Whilst studying for my degree I worked as an unpaid intern with DM Nesbit & Co, a well established firm of estate agents & antique auctioneers in Southsea. I joined them full time after graduating, having worked first for a year at the Salisbury firm of Woolley & Wallis. In 2004 the BBC came to Nesbits to film an episode of the new series ‘Cash in the Attic’ and, as luck would have it, they were also looking for a new valuation expert presenter for their team. So I did a screen test, got the job and filmed over 150 episodes working alongside household names like Gloria Hunniford & Angela Rippon. This led to a second opportunity to film BBC’S Put Your Money Where Your Mouth is and on to ‘Bargain Hunt” joining the team in 2014. I have gone full circle really, having left Nesbits in 2004 to start a valuation business and focus on TV opportunities I re-joined the firm as managing director in 2014, so I’m back where I started out!” “It’s great fun but hard work. We film four episodes back to back over three days, juggling the blue teams and the red teams, it’s all done at quite a pace!” SO WHEN JOHN ISN’T FILMING WHERE DOES HE LIKE TO GO IN HAMPSHIRE? “I love being by the sea, so Southsea and Hayling Island are very close to my heart. Some friends have recently refurbished and relaunched

a restaurant in Southsea called Beckets that has proved extremely popular with people of all ages and my wife and I have a real fondness for the Chewton Glen near New Milton.” “To me a chef is like an artist and the craft of cooking is an art, no doubt about it. I believe art should stimulate one of the senses, art the eyes, music the ears and food the nose and palette. I never get star struck but when we filmed Celebrity cash in the Attic with Antonio Carlucchio and Mary Berry I Just thought wow, and pinched myself!” WITH SUCH A DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE, DOES JOHN HAVE A FAVOURITE PERIOD OF ARTIST HISTORY? “Oh, definitely the 20th Century! The whole idea of ripping up the rulebook and starting again. Picasso is a prime example, he was a fabulous draftsman in the classical academic style but diversified into what we now know him for, we wouldn’t even talk about him if he hadn’t. Then there is the modernist movement of the Bauhaus School, utilizing new materials in furniture design such as tubular steel, plastics and bent plywood for example. Just such an incredible time in the fine and decorative arts.” “My area of specialty is Militaria, particularly Naval. It’s not so much the item but the story behind it that interests me. For example, I have a hardwood pulley-block from the original HMS Invincible which sank in the Solent in 1758. Made by the French, she was originally called L’Invincibelle,’ and subsequently captured by the British. She influenced British ship building, and by the time of Trafalgar in 1805 around 85% of our fleet were designed on her lines. The pulley-block isn’t that aesthetically pleasing to look at, but when you consider her history it is amazing!” DOES JOHN HAVE A PRIZED PROCESSION OR SOMETHING HE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? “Well yes, obviously my family. My wife and I met when I was just 16, we now have three grown-up children aged 30, 24 and 20, and two granddaughters aged 8 and 6. I’m passionate about vintage vehicles so my 1968 Lambretta and my 1968 Volvo Amazon car because the latter was owned from new by my mentor and woodwork teacher Harry Bourne. I used to ask him ‘when will you sell me that car sir?’ and he would reply ‘get in the queue son!’ Then one day he said ‘If you want the car, you’re at the front of the queue’. It’s such a privilege to own it. Harry literally saved me from the wrong side of the street and to this day we are firm friends, he is eighty- six now and it’s my turn to look after him and his lovely wife Joan.” “Also the surprising finds we have at Nesbits, for example, you just never know what will come through the door. A Rolex Submariner watch we sold for £50,000, a Queen Victoria naval medal for £25,000 and a gilded copper Buddha that recently sold for £47,500.” When John is not working at Nesbits and appearing on television he has another commitment close to his heart- The Princes Trust. “I feel a real affinity with the work of The Prince’s Trust. Growing up, I was a kid who could have easily followed the wrong path. The Prince’s Trust provides invaluable support for many youngsters who have had such a tough time, offering them the chance of a new future. I first became involved when I was invited to be the auctioneer at a Princes Trust event at the Savoy, it turned out to be one of the Trusts most successful fundraisers. Since then I acted for their as auctioneer and have been made a Celebrity Ambassador for the Trust. It’s an honor and a privilege to work for them.” Successful in all areas, John Cameron is certainly an inspirational figure. www.nesbits.co.uk GG.

MEON VALLEY HEARTSTART: 20,000 SINCE 2000 Meon Valley Heartstart (MVHS) is celebrating! Since it was set up in 2000, it has trained more than 20,000 local people in emergency life saving skills. Recognized last November in the National Heart Safe Awards as the 2017 Educational Establishment of the Year, this small local community organisation is going from strength to strength and has an ambitious vision that everyone should know how to save a life. Scheme Coordinator David Williamson said “When we started the scheme, we had

WE HAVE A CUNNING PLAN… BLACKADDER GOES FORTH IS COMING TO TITCHFIELD

no idea how many people we might be able to reach, but we knew that one life saved made all our efforts worthwhile. To realise that we have reached more than 20,000 people, all through the voluntary effort of our trainers and helpers and at no cost to the individuals trained, is something we are all very proud of.” The training offered by Heartstart provides participants with an understanding of what to do in a medical emergency and gives them practical skills in calling the emergency services, dealing with an unconscious person, performing CPR, using a defibrillator, helping someone who is choking, and what to do when someone is bleeding seriously. The training is provided to pre-schools, infant and Damp, Dad’s Army, Steptoe and Son and The Liver Birds: Blackadder Goes Forth. Blackadder Goes Forth is set in 1917 in the trenches of France, with Captain Edmund Blackadder joined by the loyal but dim Private Baldrick, the enthusiastic and excitable twit Lieutenant George, the loud and domineering oaf, General Melchett and Blackadder’s bitter and sarcastic rival: Captain Darling. A comedy play set in the trenches during a horrific war is certainly a challenge for any writer or Director, but Martin Crawley who directs Blackadder Goes Forth is looking forward to Titchfield’s latest production.

Blackadder is undoubtedly one of the most popular situation comedies of all time, with its mix of superb characters and brilliant writing. This November, Titchfield Festival Theatre is proud to present the latest of its’ comedy adaptations following the successful performance of the classic shows Rising

He says, “Blackadder is a comic masterpiece and I’m a great fan. We know that our patrons at Titchfield have a real thirst for classic comedies – and every year we do like to perform a play with a theme reflecting war and conflict. Blackadder Goes Forth, with its’ clever blend of wit and pathos fits the bill perfectly. “We are seeking to recreate the feeling of the period, demonstrating how just behind the comedy lay the true horrors of the war. We have the impervious Captain Blackadder

Local Community First Responder, Robert Shields says of Heartstart “I have attended a large number of cardiac arrests and in most cases, a relative or member of the public is already performing CPR. It is so reassuring that this essential intervention is well recognised and the skills are so well practised on the occasions they are needed”. This year alone Meon Valley Heartstart’s small team of qualified trainers and helpers will train over 4,000 adults and children. As an organisation completely run by volunteers, MVHS has very low overheads and can therefore keep costs down and offer its training for free. Donations received allow the organisation to raise its profile in the local community and keep training equipment and materials up-todate. We are confident that the audience will love the superb comedy – and appreciate the poignancy which Blackadder Goes Forth so brilliantly captures.” This year is of course the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the 11th November 1918 when the First World War officially ended. To commemorate that historic occasion, Titchfield is performing a special matinée showing on Armistice Day itself. Blackadder opens on Wednesday 7th November until Saturday 17th November at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG. WEST MEON THEATRE - THE 39 STEPS JANUARY 23 - JANUARY 26 The 39 Steps is a fast-paced comedy, loosely based on the Alfred Hitchcock film, which is itself even more loosely based on John Buchan’s much-loved novel. Set in the 1930s following Richard Hannay who has been accused of murder, he flees to Scotland, encountering a host of colourful characters. Our hero is chased along the outside of a steam train, plunges off the Forth Bridge, is kidnapped by spies, shot at by a biplane, pursued by bloodhounds across the Scottish moorlands and even has to deliver an impromptu speech at a political rally. All this will be portrayed by just five actors in a frenzied performance that will leave them and the audience gasping for breath. EDUCATION

COMMUNITY in life. During their time at PSC AHED these students have conquered the many challenges of studying as an adult; juggling caring for young families, managing demanding work commitments and gruelling commutes to achieve the college’s most exceptional results to date. For the first time ever 40% of students received first class honours degrees (compared to a nation-wide figure of 26%) with a further 36% receiving a 2.1. Staff and students work in partnership to ensure each individual fulfils their potential, with excellent results.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW DIRECTION? Peter Symonds Adult & Higher Education Division offers a wide range of courses varying from language and leisure classes to industry-recognised professional qualifications and university degrees in a variety of subjects. Approximately 250 students choose to attend higher education courses at PSC AHED every year. They are attracted by our pioneering approach to learning, where students study for a degree one day a week

SOBERTON VILLAGERS PLAN TOUCHING WW1 TRIBUTE

whilst continuing in employment. With fees rising at mainstream universities, this proves both professionally enriching and cost effective. The high quality of teaching offered at AHED consistently exceeds rigorous national quality requirements, and was recognised in 2018 with a Silver TEF Award from the government’s Office for Students. This year, staff and students of Peter Symonds AHED are celebrating the extraordinary degree results achieved by recent graduates. The majority of these graduates returned to education as mature students, opting to upskill, to retrain or to find a new direction

The villagers of Soberton are planning to mark the armistice of 11th November 1918 with a poppy trail. The trail will begin at St Peter’s Church, Church Green, Soberton with large poppies made by the Brownies and Guides. These will be along the church path railings and the fence along church green each poppy will have a tag attached with the name of each casualty in the 1914-1918 war from the villages of Soberton, Droxford, Exton and Corhampton, a total of 118. Following on, a trail of knitted and crocheted poppies will continue down school hill, up cole hill and along the high street to the war memorial culminating in a ‘wave’ on the memorial. These poppies, approximately 1300, have been made by members of St Peter’s stitch and chatter group, who meet monthly in the church rooms, and other villagers to cover the 3.5Km trail. The trail and ‘wave’ will be in place by 28th October. Do please come and follow the poppy route and join us at St Peter’s for the Remembrance Day service on Sunday November 11th starting at 10.50am. This special service will commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1.

Equally popular is our Access to Higher Education programme, which provides an alternative route to university for adult learners. This is ideal for those wishing to progress to study at university without traditional entry requirements as well as those who want to make a career change. Learners can study full-time or part-time on diplomas including: Allied Health Professionals, Health & Social Care Professional, Humanities, Nursing & Midwifery, Primary Teaching and Sciences. In the past academic year all Access students who decided to progress were offered university places, four of which were accepted directly onto Masters programmes. Come along to one of our Open Events or visit our website www.psc.ac.uk/ahed to discover the right course for you!

TALK REGARDING THE GREAT WAR

To commemorate the end of the First World War West Meon & Warnford Sports Club have invited Fraser Skirrow, a former TA Officer and the author of ‘Massacre on the Marne’ the Battalion history of the 2/5th West Yorkshire Regiment, to give a talk at the Pavilion, Headon View, West Meon, GU32 1LH on Wednesday, 7th November at 7.30p.m. When Fraser is not studying the Great War and visiting battlefields, he runs a specialist company in the development of new medicines. The talk will be one that shows how the methods of conducting the actual fighting changes from the Somme (Disaster) to the Hundred Days (Success). Food will be provided. There is no charge for the evening but there is a suggested contribution of £5. All funds raised will be donated to the Merchant Navy. Tickets will be available from West Meon Village Shop.

Gussie from Raimes has high hopes for this year's harvest: “We are expecting to be harvesting two weeks earlier than usual and are looking at a beautiful bumper crop, and a wonderful vintage year. These last couple of weeks of waiting are a nervous time guarding against birds, wasps and autumnal weather. PROFESSIONAL WHAT CAN SEPARATING PARENTS DO TO TRY AND MINIMISE THE STRESS FOR CHILDREN OF THE FAMILY? If a couple are considering separation and/or divorce it is crucial, particularly where children are concerned, to try and resolve disagreements in an amicable way. There are many options available to parents as an alternative to a court based process including mediation, collaborative practice, arbitration and solicitor negotiation. You can discuss which process might be right for you and your former partner so that you both have control over the process and feel supported in trying to decide together what happens to your children after your separation, and how money and assets will be divided between you.

CONTEMPLATING SEPARATION? THINK OF THE CHILDREN! Amy Trench is a family solicitor at Trethowans and she answers some questions below specifically about the impact on children when parents separate and/or divorce. CAN SEPARATION HAVE A DAMAGING IMPACT ON CHILDREN OF THE FAMILY? It is possible in many cases that it is not parental separation itself that damages the child of the family but the parental conflict that comes with it. A survey undertaken by Resolution of 14-22 year olds found that many teens and young adults felt that their parents placed additional stresses on them during the process of breaking up. Parents often inadvertently involve children in their dispute and if children consider themselves 50% mum and 50% dad, hearing one parent denigrate the other is like being criticised themselves. It is important for parents contemplating separation to consider the impact on the children and how they can seek to discuss the arrangements for the children with their ex partner.

Parents can also access an online Parenting Plan that they can personalise and edit. In addition, Resolution provide many useful tools on their website (www.resolution.org.uk) along with a key leaflet entitled ‘Helping parents to help children’. Seeking legal advice early so that they know their responsibilities and expectations is also helpful. If you require help or further information please contact Amy Trench at our Southampton offices based in Hedge End. Trethowans offer a free 30 minute consultation to consider the issues with you and to explore the various options. You can speak to Amy at the Southampton Office by phoning 02380 321000. We understand that family and relationship issues are sensitive and we know that emotions may be running high when you turn to us. That is why we offer all new clients a FREE half hour meeting. Amy Trench Trethowans Solicitors www.trethowans.com The Pavilion, Botleigh Grange Business Park, Hedge End, Southampton, SO30 2AF

WHAT IS RESOLUTION? Resolution consists of family lawyers and other professionals committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes. We follow a Code of Practice that promotes a non-confrontational approach to family problems and we encourage solutions that consider the needs of the whole family and in particular the best interests of children. WHAT SORT OF NEGATIVE EFFECTS COULD SEPARATION HAVE ON CHILDREN? In addition to a general disruption in family life and possibly less time with one or both parents children will often end up not seeing their grandparents and wider family as a result of parents separating. In the Resolution survey mentioned above 1 in 5 children said they did not get the GCSE/A Level results they were hoping for as a result of their parents breaking up. In addition, a number of children have to move schools, which can of course have a knock-on effect on exam results. For children in private schooling a discussion will need to be had early on between parents as to whether it remains affordable moving forwards and how they might continue to pay for this. With social media on the rise it too can cause embarrassment and upset for children. Children can end up finding out online when one of their parents has a new partner and can suffer embarrassment by a parent posting something on social media about their separation or divorce that was perhaps meant for their circle of friends. With information being so widely available on social media it can be difficult to ensure privacy of family life is adhered to by all members of the family. Anything posted on social media is available for children to view, not to mention that you cannot control what other people post on social media. Posts or messages can also be taken out of context and private messages can be copied and pasted for general viewing, which might not be what the writer had intended.

COMMUNITY recently arranged her father’s funeral with minimal help from me. MYTH 3 – EMBALMING IS COMPULSORY While there are sometimes benefits embalming is not compulsory and is usually an additional cost.Your funeral director should discuss this with you. It should not be seen as the solution to a perfect chapel visit. (See 6) MYTH 4- THE ‘ASHES’ AREN’T GENUINE The cremation takes place in a single cremator, which is cleared after each cremation. They are as genuine as they can possibly be.

FUNERAL PLANNING MYTHS When someone needs to make funeral arrangements for a loved one or a friend, it is the funeral director’s role to guide them through this process. Without being patronising or trying to sell things families don’t really need, they must ensure all the relevant options are covered. During this process the family rightly ask a lot of questions and sometimes tell us things they’ve been told by others. Funeral Myths! We’re going to cover a few of the more popular ones below.

SUSTAINABLE WOODLAND MANAGEMENT COURSE

ABOUT THE COURSE This is a fascinating 5-day Sustainable Woodland Management course which details and demonstrates all the techniques you would need to sustainably steward a woodland. Aimed at all woodland managers, from novice buyers to professionals looking to broaden their knowledge, the course looks at woodland management skills and biodiversity conservation through both practical and theoretical sessions. As an added bonus, the course is split between two unique sites: the Sustainability Centre in Hampshire's stunning South

MYTH 1 - FUNERALS COST A FORTUNE This is very current. Shop around, ask around. It’s not easy when you’re bereaved but visit a couple of funeral directors to see what they’re like. We are all different, we don’t all charge the same, and sometimes there’s a very good reason for that. If anything, costs are coming down at the moment. Try to be critical and understand what you’re getting. MYTH 2 – FUNERAL DIRECTORS NEED TO DO EVERYTHING Increasingly families are becoming more involved, and not just arranging flowers and possibly carrying the coffin. A friend of mine

Downs, and Ben Law's Prickly Nut Woods nearby. This enables participants to immerse themselves in different woodland settings and learn how to apply techniques across woodland types. THE COURSE COVERS • Principles of woodland sustainability and making the most of our natural resources • Woodland types, structure and methods of management • Timber production, timber processing • Financial aspects including charcoal and woodland craft • Woodland conservation and biodiversity, assessing and monitoring wildlife • Woodland law and health and safety • Social forestry and the value of the community WHO IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR? Suitable for those planning to or currently managing a woodland, beginners and professionals. WHAT TO BRING/WEAR • Clothing for indoors and out, including warm work clothes, sturdy, comfortable footwear and a waterproof coat. • Please bring a camera to record your work for your management plan.

MYTH 5 – FUNERAL DIRECTORS SIGN THE OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT (I really have been asked this). As much as I would like to be James Bond, NO. MYTH 6 – AN OPEN COFFIN CHAPEL VISIT WILL PROVIDE CLOSURE There is no standard ‘need’ that everyone experiences the same way. Some will feel the need to say their final goodbyes. Others would prefer to remember them how they were. There really is no such thing as a silly question so feel free to ask us mail@ahfreemantle.co.uk or we’ll cover further myths next time.

Megan visited Bishop’s Waltham Rotary club in September to say thanks for helping to sponsor her flights and insurance. She brought along some chocolate cookies as a sign of her appreciation and gave a talk on her experiences there.

BISHOP'S WALTHAM ROTARY NEWS OCTOBER THIRTY YEARS AGO IN FEBRUARY Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club (BWRC) was established by a group of local businessmen in February 1989; and since then, approximately half a million pounds has been collected and distributed in the town and surrounding areas. See if you recognise any of the faces in the picture above; many are still members of the club today.

Place. So this is advanced notice: put the 22nd February in your diary. Naomi House first opened in 1997 to offer care and support to children who were not expected to live until adulthood. Since then it has helped more than 1,000 families from Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Isle of Wight, West Sussex and Surrey. In recent years, major developments in medicine and care have meant that more children can now be expected to reach adulthood. As a result, Jacksplace was built in 2010 as a hospice to offer care specifically for young people aged 16 and over.

WORLD CINEMA IN WINCHESTER

T

wo of Winchester’s popular arts organisations are coming together to raise Winchester’s profile as a recognised centre for Film in Southern England. The new partnership comes into being on 6 November when Winchester Film Society and Winchester Film Festival showcase an evening of mind-boggling short films produced by dynamic young filmmakers from across the globe. The event will be hosted at the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. Winchester Film Society has a forty year track record in showcasing the best in World Cinema. In the last couple of years the venue for the Society has been the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. As a result of improvements to the quality of projection, sound systems and catering provision audience numbers have rocketed. The Society runs a programme of films between October and May that features films from every continent and covers all genres from horror to animation to leading edge social drama. Winchester Film Festival runs between 3 - 10 November. The event offers the best new film making talent an opportunity to screen their creations. The event not only showcases award-winning short films from over 50 countries but also includes feature films premiering in the UK. Alongside the Science Centre event on 6 November films can be viewed during the rest of the week at venues across the City. This is a unique opportunity to view films made by seasoned film professionals and newly emerging directorial talent alike.

If you are tired of the standard Hollywood fare of chickflicks, Marvel heroes and back slapping Hollywood stars this joint event could rekindle your love of film. What’s on show here is a type of film that takes risks but doesn’t necessarily have happy endings or massive CGI effects. The films won’t originate from major US studios and be backed by multibillion pound budgets. Chances are they will have been produced on a shoestring just about anywhere else in the world. What you will get is radical storytellers taking on major social issues that you don’t see often at Chain Cinemas or on mainstream TV. So World Cinema is beating a path to your doorstep in Winchester. It’s an experience of film that is participative. You will be encouraged to give your opinions, talk to and question filmmakers and chat to other film goers about issues raised in the films. Going out to watch film offers something you can’t get at home watching Netflix or Amazon Prime. Check out the links below to discover an amazing programme of World and British Cinema you might not otherwise get a chance to see. MANNERS MAKETH WHITE VAN MAN © 2018 LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND

L

aM (Lord and Master) burst through the front door and slammed his keys down on the table. I’m sat on the kitchen floor de-burring the spaniel. The painstaking process is endured with stoicism by my floppy-eared friend and, as it’s a not-infrequent occurrence, (the bursting, slamming and so forth), the dog and I look up with only a polite interest. “Oh, bad day darling?” I ask. “Thump, thump” enquires the dog’s tail. “Bloody white vans. There ought to be some sort of supremely difficult exam that white van man has to pass. Or better still, an incredibly slow speed restriction. Or both.” The dog’s fur, now rid of all manner of ingenious seed carrying vehicles, had returned to its habitual smoothness. Stroking her was very soothing. I was able to make suitably sympathetic noises, whilst mentally checking the contents of the freezer to locate the peas that were to accompany the fish pie currently in the oven. Encouraged to continue, he ranted “Overtook me on the dual carriageway at god-knows-what-speed, then realised that it needed to take the next turning off, so slammed on the breaks just in front of me and, well, I nearly died!” Love him and his sense of the dramatic. LaM stepped over the dog, poured himself a scotch and sat down at the kitchen table. Dutiful dog went to greet him, presenting her head on his knee to be stroked. The recuperative combination of Famous Grouse and soft silky fur, restored his sense of proportion. “I’m happy that you made it home in one piece, darling.” And I was. He was an irascible old stick, but he was my irascible old stick. Plus, there were a whole stack of manly chores lined up for his weekend’s spare moments, no doubt shoehorned between the round of golf on Saturday morning and the rugby international on Sunday afternoon. “On the whole, though, I’d have to say that I find van and lorry drivers to be some of the most courteous and considerate drivers on the road. They pull over on these narrow country roads and put their hand up in thanks when I do the same.” I commented mildly as I retrieved the peas from the freezer and popped them in the microwave. “That’s because you rarely drive more than a 10 mile radius of the village, my darling, and hardly ever leave Hampshire. Your world is in miniature, sweetings.” A fair point, if a little patronisingly delivered, I had to concede. I’ve got to a certain age and know what I like. And what I like is my home county, Hampshire. With its cities, towns, villages, beautiful countryside, rivers and seaside – it was indeed a wonderful world in miniature – and was all I needed. But I pressed on regardless. “Today, for example, a little old lady cut right across my side of the road and proceeded in a series of lurches, kangaroo-stylie, as she turned up Parson’s Lane. I had to slam on my brakes, and instead of putting her hand up to say ‘sorry’, which would have been nice, she

just glared at me as if I was a dangerous driver and everything wrong in her world was now my fault.” “Isolated incident.” LaM was dismissive. But actually, now that I gave it some thought, that sort of thing happened quite a lot in my world. Perfectly lovely, smiley, sweet natured old dears of the village got behind the wheels of their cars and assumed a scowling, slightly demonic expression, coupled with ‘interesting’ driving techniques. Was it, to cut them some slack, merely a lessening of awareness brought on by their diminishing faculties? Note to self as I opened the oven; keep close eye on LaM, who, let’s face it, wasn’t in the first flush of youth. “No – you cannot speak of the ignorance and recklessness of white van man in the same breath as our friends and neighbours.“ he said with a grandiose finality. The dishing up of the fish pie rather brought the conversation to a natural end. The following afternoon, after he returned from the golfing expedition, LaM offered to drive me into town. His destination, a DIY store (remember the aforementioned manly chores?) was next to the garden centre that I needed to visit. Returning, loaded up with bags of Feed&Weed and quick set cement, we were pootling along the road to our house. Drawing up behind a small cordoned off section of roadworks on our side of the road, due to some much needed superfast broadband for our village, we waited for the flow of traffic to break so that we could move on. We waited. LaM tutted. We waited some more. He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. A steady stream of cars continued towards us with no sign of letting up. “Oh for goodness’ sake!” LaM had reached the end of his (rather short) tether “Will no one stop and let us through?” he shouted at no one in particular. As if by magic, the next vehicle approaching stopped and flashed his lights. It was a white van. “Look darling, that white van has stopped and the nice man is letting you through. Isn’t that kind and helpful of him?” The irony was apparently not lost on LaM, who harrumphed and mumbled something that sounded like “One swallow doth not a summer make.” As he went to pull away, already raising a hand in thanks to the smiley white van man, LaM was forced to slam on the brakes. Weed & feed and quick set cement slid forward and collided with the backs of our seats, as we were overtaken from behind by an elderly couple in a brand new SUV. From their lofty perch, manufactured somewhere in the Pacific rim, they grimaced at LaM and white van man both, as they cut across our path and roared away. White van man shrugged and raised his hands, palm up as we drove past him with a cheery wave from me and a shake of his head in utter disbelief from LaM. LaM’s absolute certainty in the-way-things-aresupposed-to-be had been somewhat shaken, so I allowed myself the merest of gloats as I patted the dear old stick’s leg. “Welcome to my world, darling.”

BRITISH TRUST FOR ORNITHOLOGY OWL APPEAL W

e’re in the dark and we need your help. Owls play an important role in our environment. We urgently need your help to understand more about the ecology and population status of owls in the UK. As apex predators they sit at the top of the food chain and are therefore excellent indicators of the health of the countryside. We need a much better understanding of their population trends, how they use different habitats and how they interact with other species. Data collected for Bird Atlas 2007-11 has shown a worrying contraction in geographical range and decline in abundance for Short-eared Owl. Although the distribution of Tawny Owl has changed little over the last 40 years, Breeding Bird Survey data suggest that the population is also declining. We now need specially-designed surveys to find out more about their status and how they use different habitats; the last Tawny Owl survey was carried out more than a decade ago. The urgent work you could help to fund A project that tackles our knowledge gaps for all five UK owl species is a very ambitious undertaking. We have designed a staged approach with three elements of work; Securing better information about the habitat requirements of Tawny Owls and their breeding numbers. We’ll combine this with efforts to unite those individuals and groups studying Tawny Owls through local schemes to provide a strong link-up between regional and national patterns. The next stage of the project will focus on the Shorteared Owl, a nomadic species for which information on movements and habitat use is particularly important in the design of sensitive land management approaches. John Calladine at BTO Scotland has just begun work which

helps us to understand more about the home range, habitat use and year-round movements of Short-eared Owls. The third stage is to extend this knowledge through a wider programme of tracking work, so that we can understand how the habitat requirements of Short-eared Owls change through the year. This autumn and winter we want to learn more about Tawny Owl population change and understand more about their calling behaviour. To do this we need your help. Take part in the Tawny Owl Calling Survey You can help us to increase our understanding of their calling behaviour and distribution, particularly focusing on the impact of urbanisation and artificial lighting. It's easy to take part. All you need to do is listen for Tawny Owls for 20 minutes each week, from 30 September to 31 March, from your garden, local park or woodland. You can even listen whilst lying in bed with the window open. The more weeks that you can listen the better - but you can do as many or as few weeks as you are able. We need your help, whether you usually hear Tawny Owls or not. Knowing where owls can't be heard is just as valuable as knowing where they can be heard. Donate to the owl appeal Our owls may be fading into the dark - we must address the gaps in our knowledge now so that we have the best chance of countering the threats they face. Let’s make sure that those magical encounters with owls don’t become even more rare. To make your contribution to their future visit: https:// www.bto.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=14&c hannel=8&medium=102

MASTER OF THE POND BY CLAIRE THURLOW

There’s a ‘Private Fishing’ sign posted close to the pond’s edge, but the heron clearly thinks this place exists for its personal benefit. It stands stock-still, impassive in the middle of the pond. From a distance the big grey bird might be mistaken for an old wooden post, if it weren’t for the crest on its head and the white feathers of its under parts which ruffle in the breeze. On this cloudy October afternoon, when the waterlilies are long gone, the heron’s predominantly slate-coloured plumage merges with the shady murk of the pond water. But as I get closer, the shape of the bird is unmistakable. That long crooked neck, daggershaped bill and powerful, yet hunched, silhouette make it one of our most recognisable British birds. The heron bides its time, seemingly oblivious to a noisy rabble of ducks on the other side of the pond, or a wheeling buzzard overhead. It sees me watching from the bank, but sensing that I’m not a threat, ignores me. It waits patiently, the inscrutable ruler of the pond. The heron takes a step forward, leisurely but assured, working the pond. It scans the shallow water for a meal, ready to strike. The mallards, around a dozen in total, retreat, squawking and flapping, to the reeds. They are flustered, but not concerned enough to flee. A few months ago they might have feared for the safety of a duckling with this predator around, but the ducklings are fully grown now and big enough to fend for themselves. The heron struts through the shallows, as tall as a small child, stirring up silt and sending ripples across the water. The bird’s focus is on fish, not fowl. The weather remains mild, with autumnal trees reflected on the surface, while dark shapes dart beneath.Yet in the chilly months to come, when fish escape to the more temperate depths of the pond, and when the surface

may be packed with ice, birds should be on their guard. The heron is an expert opportunist and may turn on any small bird foolish enough to get too close. Frogs, voles, moles, worms and insects are all at risk. There have even been reports of the heron’s rat-catching skills, prising rodents from the reeds and swallowing them alive and kicking. The heron is clearly at home here, although the pond is far from large. They are an adaptable lot, taking advantage of almost any watery location, and can be found from estuaries to canals, from salt marshes to rural ditches and village ponds like this one. After harvest, they may visit farmland to hunt for rodents in stubbly fields. Or a taste for goldfish will tempt them to tiny back garden ponds, where they stealthily fish at dawn or dusk. Like this one, herons are usually solitary, but from February to April, they gather together to breed, creating a temporary colony of up to 40 pairs.Their nests are precarious, ramshackle affairs, surprising high up in the trees for such large birds. Elegant and confident while striding through the shallows, the heron has the look of an ungainly flier. But I’m proved wrong. A tractor rumbles down the lane and the heron is suspicious. It launches into the air, with slow, dignified beats of powerful wings which must span nearly two metres. It tucks its neck in as it flies, and stretches those impossibly long legs straight out behind, stiff as bamboo canes. A little ungainly, perhaps, compared to the aeronautics of the buzzard above, and far from beautiful, but powerful, controlled. Steady wing-beats carry the heron to a nearby oak, where it lands solidly on a broken branch and hops to the very end. It shakes its head, shakes its tail feathers, sticks out its beak and tests the air. Then it settles patiently and waits.
