Manor Farm Ghost Hunt Manor Farm was once an isolated 15th Century farmhouse with its ancient duck pond and neighbouring St Bartholomew’s Church being mentioned in the Domesday Book. The location was a working farm for over 600 years making it an ideal site for the BBC to film its historical drama Wartime Farm here in 2012. Staff and visitors often report strange smells and poltergeist activity such as doors closing as well as unexplained knocks and tapping. Will you be lucky enough to experience the ghosts of children playing? Supernatural Tours has access to both cottages, the two barns and the deconsecrated church for this true spinetingling event. This event will include the use of equipment and participation in experiments as we discover if Manor Farm is haunted. This is a real ghost hunt experience, and we cannot guarantee paranormal activity.£35.00 8.30pm2am. Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
Happy Kitchens completely renovated our kitchen, transformed two wardrobes and built us a lovely cupboard in our storage room. Ben was really enthusiastic during our initial consultations and extremely helpful with assisting us with our choices. He was also very accommodating when we changed our minds on a couple of elements during the process. Dan, our main fitter, could not have been more professional, flexible or helpful when we had a couple of small niggles, all of which were resolved with a smile – an absolute star! The other fitters who worked with Dan were all very courteous and hard-working. The key thing we recognised is their desire to make the customer happy – Job well done! Thank you Ben, Dan and James. Mr Wyatt, Winchester
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

Daunting and dangerous does not even come close! Councillor Rob Humby, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Transport, will consider a report setting out the major progress made to date but also reviewing the risks associated with the transport scheme at Junction 10 of the M27 in Fareham, near Wickham, at his Decision Day meeting. Councillor Humby explained: “Hampshire County Council stepped in to co-ordinate this complex scheme, pulling together different interests, and working closely with Highways England to align to the Smart Motorways project, Fareham Borough Council on the proposed development at Welborne and the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership to secure Government funding. “We’ve made excellent progress over the past 12 months to design a scheme which can be delivered and which has allowed the developers to submit an updated planning application for Welborne. We’ve achieved what we set out to do at this stage of the project, but we are now at a point where we can’t go any further without progress from our partners around planning permissions and funding agreements. “I am also concerned that timescales are becoming very tight for the scheme to be progressed in alignment with the Smart Motorways programme. We took on this role as scheme promoter on the condition that there was no financial risk to Hampshire County Council, and, with funding provided to the County Council for development and preparation work due to run out at the end of January, we need some quick decisions from our partners.” The full report is available at: http:// democracy.hants.gov.uk/mgCommitteeDetails. aspx?ID=170

Hampshire County Council is supporting Change4life, a new campaign to encourage families to ‘make a swap when you next shop’ and help them cut back on sugar. Councillor Patricia Stallard, Executive Member for Public Health at the local authority, said “Most of the sugar children are having comes from sugary drinks, confectionery, biscuits, cakes, desserts, plus higher-sugar breakfast cereals and yoghurts. Change4Life aims to make it simple for families to swap sugary food and drinks for healthy options.” Children in England are having around 2,800 sugar cubes more than they should each year , more than double the maximum recommended amount. Too much sugar is bad for children’s health as it can lead to the build-up of harmful fat on the inside that we cannot see. This fat can cause weight gain and serious diseases like type 2 diabetes, which people are getting younger than ever before, and heart disease and some cancers. Too much sugar can also cause painful tooth decay. Some supermarkets will be highlighting healthier options in-store and many will be using a new Change4Life ‘good choice’ badge to make it even easier for families to make healthier choices. Primary school age children will receive a free take-home pack from school in midJanuary. The pack takes children on an ‘Adventure in Sugar Smart World’ and features fun games and stickers to get children to spot the higher-sugar food and drinks and choose healthier swaps. It also provides easy tips on everyday sugar swaps for the whole family. For information, search www.nhs.uk/changeforlife

COUNTRY MOUSE, TOWN MOUSE BY CLAIRE THURLOW
I
t’s four o’clock on a drizzly January afternoon and the tawny owls are already on the hunt. The sun is setting as I walk back towards home, and that familiar ‘keewick’ call is answered by ‘hoo-hoo’ from the other side of the lane. I will miss the owls, and have found their regular presence to be companionable rather than eerie. They have watched us from the beech tree and the garage roof, and swooped low at dusk over the rough grass in the meadow in search of prey. But tomorrow we leave the owls, and the village, and become ‘townies’ again. Although there will be woodland walks on our doorstep, I doubt I will have the same opportunities for seeing wildlife as I’ve had here. It’s not just luck that has allowed us to witness the owls close up, they are drawn by the presence of tiny rodents, and wood mice in particular. Although mainly nocturnal, I have seen wood mice in daylight, darting from behind the log wall and into a narrow patch of woodland. This corner has been left largely untouched, (nobody would call me a tidy gardener!) with a tangle of brambles, nettles and ivy which shelters small mammals and birds from predators and the worst of the winter weather. The canopy of trees offers beech nuts and sycamore seeds, while the undergrowth provides centipedes, worms and insects. In the autumn I spotted a wood mouse scrambling among the shrubs to reach a clutch of berries. It’s hard to dislike this appealing little creature, with its big black eyes and over-sized ears. No doubt the long, twitching whiskers and mobile nose alerted the mouse to my presence, but it
appeared unconcerned. Perhaps it felt safer in daylight, while the nocturnal hunters - foxes and cats, as well as owls, were sleeping. Unlike the drab, grey-brown house mouse, the wood mouse, also known as the long-tailed field mouse, has a soft, sandycoloured coat and white belly. Agile and tenacious, it gathers a stock of food to sustain it through the winter - acorns are a particular favourite. If it raids the berry bushes, the wood mouse leaves the fruit behind, preferring the pips.Should you find a neat, circular hole nibbled in a hazel shell, then the wood mouse has probably been at work. Unlike the gnawing of a squirrel, all the teeth marks point downwards. Once found, the food is stored in caches, perhaps in an old birds’ nest or in a hollow tree. Last winter, with a coating of snow on the ground, tiny tracks along its regular route suggested the wood mouse had been out and about despite the cold. They don’t hibernate, although, like many of us, may become sluggish in a harsh winter, preferring the comfort of a network of burrows beneath the tree roots. But if stores are low, they will venture out to forage, especially if there are young to feed. A prolific breeder, producing up to six litters a year, the wood mouse may even give birth in winter if food supplies are adequate. I hope the wood mice make it through the winter. Not just because their presence ensures a valuable food source for the owls, but because they are fascinating in their own right.Who knew that they ‘way-mark’ their territories with strategically placed leaves and twigs? Or that they’ll settle in a nest box if it’s low down on a tree trunk? They may be small, but are certainly characterful!

ENTERTANIMENT rehearsing a new play, arguing and sometimes agonising and occasionally improvising. Olga is based on a character that I first featured in The Nose; an actress who has tried and failed in her career and when I discussed this with colleagues after we finished this play, they asked me: what happened to that actress when she toured the theatres across Europe? “I couldn’t answer that question, but it gave me the idea for this play. The image in my mind was of an actress (Olga) talking to a director (Anton), with the play then showing the cast rehearsing, arguing, sometimes agonising and occasionally improvising.
COMEDY AND CHAOS… OLGA AT THE THEATRE IS A REAL TONIC FOR OUR TIMES Europe: 1890. Titchfield Festival Theatre’s New Play Season continues with the firstever performance of a brand new comedy written and directed by Johnny O’Hanlon: Olga at the Theatre. The story is based on a new short play written by Anton. Olga arrives at a provincial theatre somewhere in Europe, yearning to be taken seriously as an actress; however, the small company of actors find it difficult to concentrate on the play when all around them passions, disagreements, egos and personalities collide
SPRING STEAM GALA AT THE WATERCRESS LINE
explosively - hindering Olga's desire for fame and fortune. The actors want to perform in the ‘old ways’ but Anton and the director want the company to adopt the new style of Naturalism…to act ‘naturally’. This tricky situation is not helped by the elderly actress' affection to vodka….resulting in a first night of chaos – and comedy, with plenty unfolding both backstage and on stage. ‘Olga at the Theatre’ was inspired by one of the characters, Olga, in ‘The Nose’, a play also written by Johnny O’Hanlon and performed to acclaim at Titchfield last year. Johnny explains what inspired him to write this brand new play.
If this was a play no one would deem it possible….or maybe they would? Discover for yourself what happened on that first night in this hugely entertaining and comedy première. Olga at the Theatre opens on Wednesday 6th February 2019 until Saturday 16th February at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG.

Scenes were often pretty chaotic – or perhaps you would say organised chaos! “Europe in the late 19th century was a turbulent period, politically and militarily. However, despite this uncertainty theatres across the continent continued to produce new themes, new ideas and spectacular new effects. Indeed, many will say it was the start of modern drama and theatrical productions. Theatre provided a real tonic for our times then – and can do so today.”

ANTARCTICA 2019 AT GILBERT WHITE'S HOUSE
THE BIRDS PATH - AN EXHIBITION OF DRAWINGS BY DOUGLAS ROBERTSON Hampshire based artist Douglas Robertson has become well known for his collaborations with many of the countries best poets. Originally from Scotland, he has lived in Hambledon for the last eighteen years, and living on the South Downs has had a major influence on his work.
Donald and Douglas have worked on a number of publications over the last ten years including two volumes of prose and poetry, The Guga Stone (Luath) and SY Story (Birlinn), and Herring Tales: How the Silver Darlings Shaped Human Taste and History and The Dark Stuff – Stories from the Peatlands (Bloomsbury). The Guga Stone and Herring Tales were included in the Guardian’s Best Nature Books of 2013 and 2015.
“Since childhood I have been fascinated by nature, particularly birds, and the diverse and beautiful habitats of Hampshire have played a major role in developing my vision as an artist. The light and life on the South Downs has been particularly key to this.” In his recent collaborations, birds, beasts and flowers have become the main subject matter of his work. His main collaborator over the last decade has been Donald S. Murray, and the pair are working on a new book of poems and drawing entitled ‘Birdfall’, due to be published in 2019. “Birdfall has allowed me to indulge in my love of birds, and living in Hampshire has given me a great deal of inspiration for many of the drawings, especially the many wader species living on our wonderful coastline.”
To coincide with our programme of Antarctic events January-April 2019 we will be displaying some of the museum’s antarctic treasures not usually on display, until Sunday 28th April 2019. Free with Admission. 16th February- 24th February: Penguin Trail 18th & 20th February: Build an Antarctic World 19th & 21st February: Penguin Crafts 21st February: The Tale of the Ratman of South Georgia with Dickie Hall TBC: Talk with Antarctic wildlife photographer Sue Flood. 21st March: Pull of the Poles with Kim Crosbie 25th April: Polar Medicine with Iain Grant www.gilbertwhiteshouse.org.uk Gilbert White’s House, The Wakes, High Street, Selborne, GU34 3JH
SNOWDROPS BY CANDLELIGHT AT HILL FARM HOUSE, SWANMORE He is also currently working on a major collaboration project Birds, Beasts and Flowers with award winning poet, Isobel Dixon, inspired by D.H. Lawrence’s poetry collection of the same name. The poet and artist are responding to Lawrence’s poems in various ways, and to each other’s work as a result of this contemplation and ‘conversation’ with the themes of travel, encounters with nature, our identity, mortality, sexuality and otherness. There are elements of response, renewal and rebuttal to Lawrence’s work in their approach. From the 25th of February, One Tree Bookshop, in Lavant Street, Petersfield, will be hosting an exhibition of drawings from Douglas’ recent collaborations with Donald S Murray and Isobel Dixon. He will be appearing in person at the bookshop on Saturday 9th March, working on new drawings and discussing his work and the art of collaboration. The exhibition is open 9-5 daily from 25th February to 23rd March.
Since 2013, Hill Farm House in Swanmore has hosted Snowdrops by Candlelight, a magical evening event in February with all proceeds going to charity. Hundreds of lanterns light your way as you wander along the woodland walk and the evening is topped off with complimentary mulled wine, soup and a roll in the barn. This year the gates will be open 6-9pm on Saturday 16th Feb with The Paterson Centre and St Barnabas (Reg Charity 1128899) the beneficiaries. Full details may be found on stbarnabas.org.uk.

LAWN CARE - MOSS AND SCARIFICATION
A
ccording to Don McLean’s 70’s classic, American Pie, ‘moss grows fat on a rolling stone’. According to my experience, moss grows fat on a winter lawn. Many suffer moss growth in their lawns. It’s easy to spot, lush and green amongst the grass. Thriving as it smothers its less vigorous winter bed partner. The good news is it responds well to treatment and can be brought under control with specialist lawn-care. The bad news is, left untreated it will thrive and it encourages infestation from chafer grubs which can cause a huge amount of lawn damage. From a distance moss gives the impression of a green, lush lawn. The grass it is smothering struggles to survive, the percentage of moss in the lawn increases and the grass gradually dies away. Why is this a problem? Wait until the drier summer months and you’ll soon see. Moss thrives in wet conditions, but unlike healthy, well maintained grass, which is far hardier, moss dries out and dies in dry, warm summer weather. At the height of summer, when you want to be enjoying your garden at its best, you are left with brown, scorched areas of lawn and areas of dead moss. Most unsightly and far too late in the season to treat. Spring is the ideal time for dealing with moss issues. Mowing too short, too infrequently or not following the correct mowing height for the time of year can be a big contributor to moss growth. As can incorrect nutrition, not dealing with thatch or compaction and not removing leaves from the lawn regularly. Bare areas should also be dealt with promptly so as not to leave space for moss spores to germinate. A healthy dense grass sward leaves little room for moss or weeds to take up residence. Killing and removing moss If you already have moss in your lawn this can be treated. Some people try this themselves with lawn-sand but the results can be hit and miss with the grass often being killed at the same time as the moss. Our approach is a liquid treatment combined with a wetting agent that helps penetrate deep into the thick matting of moss. Ensure your lawn has the correct nutritional plan in place, so it’s receiving the right nutrients at the right time of year. Healthy grass, like healthy people, is in a better position to fight off invaders.
Once the moss has been killed it’s time to remove it. This can be hard work over a large area where a petrol-driven scarifier is essential equipment for the job. It’s time consuming and pretty hard work but it’s important to get the dead moss out and will reduce thatch at the same time. Scarification vigorously rakes the surface of the lawn with spinning blades. These blades rip out moss and thatch and open up the surface of the lawn. Top-dressing It’s often beneficial to top-dress your lawn after scarification. This addition of a organic matter helps to level uneven hollows in the lawn surface, improves soil structure, drainage and helps the general health of the lawn. Over-seeding to infill The final process is over-seeding - introducing new, healthy grass plants to in-fill the gaps left by the moss that’s been removed, creating a stronger, healthier lawn that’s more capable of dealing with the challenges nature throws at it. Scarification creates ideal surface conditions for over-seeding. Unlike re-seeding, where the existing vegetation is removed completely and a new seed-bed created for the sowing of a new lawn, over-seeding works with what you already have by adding new grass seeds to your existing lawn and helping to blend areas of weak growth into other areas of your lawn more naturally. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. It is however really important to deal with any weeds before seeding begins. New grass plants are susceptible to the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Therefore manage the weed issue first and then get new grass plants growing. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks but regular rain is almost guaranteed at this time of year. Planning ahead is the way to create superb outdoor spaces you can enjoy all year. Now is the time to treat lawn moss problems, if you don’t want to do this yourself call in the professionals and get on top of that moss problem before it’s too late. Despite a rocky start, our friend’s elegant Vizsla hound now happily ignores the Pagan Pup and maturely concentrates on fetching his ball from wherever it falls. The Pagan Pup on the other hand, shows no signs of growing up much like the other males in the Pagan household, - spending his time engaged in happy disorder and rebellion; well he is a Spaniel after all. As our respective families grow older, things obviously change with girlfriends and boyfriends now accompanying our offspring. It's wonderful to see young people flying various nests and living their own lives and for us to be a part of it, in some small way.
On this peaceful day, we ambled down the lane and out into the beauty that surrounds our Market Town. All was tranquil at first, but then things turn for the worse. The Vizsla was, as always, dutifully retrieving, but the Pagan pup was having none of this. Having been so well behaved he could bare it no longer and decided that a swim was required. At the first sign of H2O he was in! An elegant plunge and a couple of lengths of the muddy stream seemed to suffice and then… there he was, stuck. As the elegant and pristine Vizsla looked disapprovingly down, the Pagan Pup could only manage to haul half his body (aided by spread-eagled front legs) onto the steep bank. I was suddenly aware that we were all just staring down at the Pagan Pup and no one, (it should have been me I know), aided his exit. So started the embarrassed calling ritual, “Come on you can do it good boy”. Fortunately, an able ex-forces member of our party - straddled the slippery bank and hauled the self-conscious Pagan Pup unceremoniously from the river by the scruff of his neck. Job done. Now, you would think that would have been sufficiently embarrassing for a gun dog but no, as the river widened so did his desire for adventure. While his canine companion was on ‘fetch’ number 230 the Pagan Pup had spied ducks on the opposite bank.
With an elegant dive, he was in and set off across the flowing river like an Olympian. A single bound found him out of the river and in to the small adjacent pond. The ducks had him sussed and took flight immediately, so the Pagan Pup did a couple of laps so as not to loose face and tried to climb out… and yet again, stuck. The ex-forces friends temper was now somewhat frayed, “Come on get out of there!” We all gathered on the waters edge to offer calls of encouragement, but then Pagan pup started yelping. Something was clearly not right. I gazed hopefully in the direction of the husband but couldn’t catch his eye, he’d clearly done enough dog rescuing for one day. We continued to call encouragingly but to no avail, the yelping got worse. Clearly there was nothing for it I took off my coat rolled my sleeves up – for some reason - and debated whether the well-known outdoor clothing brand I was wearing would be really up to the task. I was just about to set off across the river when, “Mum no. Don’t be daft you’re too old, I’ll go” Despite my strong urge to prove him wrong all I could was watch as Star I disappeared back along the path reappearing on the far bank. The Pagan Pup had got a hind leg caught somehow, so Star I took the plunge and set him free. As he staggered free of the muddy pond, the Pagan Pup swam heroically back across the river to face our ex-forces friends wrath. With a gaggle of Sunday tourists approaching, our party moved off as if nothing had happened. This left me with a bedraggled and suddenly shivery Pagan Pup and Star I, who was now squelching toward me wet from the knee down. I assured him I was confident that Timberland boots were designed for such eventualities and would be fine after a night on the radiator. A kind friend gave us a lift home and after a quick blow dry the Pagan Pup appeared suitably coiffured and curled up on the sofa. Star I’s boots dripped and steamed on the radiator as we retired to the pub. Perfect!

GARDEN COMMUNITY
GARDEN in the near future as we would like. Without access to Government, Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) or Homes England grant funding, the only realistic source of funding would be from the proceeds of developing County Council owned land, as identified in the draft Eastleigh Local Plan for new housing.
PLANNING FOR BOTLEY’S FUTURE As Eastleigh Borough Council publishes the agenda and reports for its next round of planning decisions, Hampshire County Council’s Leader, Councillor Roy Perry, sets out the County Council’s reasons for seeking planning permission for a new school and housing around Botley, and how this affects proposals for a new bypass.
Councillor Roy Perry, Leader of Hampshire County Council, explained: “I was disappointed to learn that the £10million award from Homes England towards the costs of a new bypass at Botley, announced last year, may only be available in the form of a repayable loan, and not as a direct grant as we had expected. “This means that the bypass will be almost entirely dependent on capital funding from Hampshire County Council if it is to go ahead
“The proceeds from the development of this land would not only be used to support the provision of the new school to meet existing needs, as well as any growth. It would also contribute to the costs associated with building a new bypass. Therefore, in order to fund the bypass and the school, we would need to use the proceeds from housing development on County Council land. We recognise that the school and the bypass are much needed community assets but without other funding, they can only be delivered alongside this housing development. As such, there are difficult decisions to be made, which is why the views of the local community will be important.” The next step will be the planning decisions by Eastleigh Borough Council on proposals on the school and housing at Woodhouse Lane, and housing north of Winchester Street. www.hants.gov.uk

BISHOPS WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB ENTRY FOR FEBRUARY
WILDLIFE TOTS AT SWANWICK NATURE RESERVE “Look at that little toad,” says Henry (2) during our trip to Wildlife Tots at Swanwick Nature Reserve in Hampshire. I go along with our three children to the sessions, which runs from 1030am to 12noon every week during the summer holidays. At the start we are invited to pick flowers and pop them into a plastic cup after which course leader Craig from Hampshire Wildlife Trust adds some special potion. We then pour it out onto the grass. At which point little Henry cries because he wants to keep it. On another occasion each child is given a bucket and asked to look for shiny, soft or hard items. Harriett (7) and Heidi (5) spot some of their school friends, which makes it even more enjoyable for them. The weather is glorious and we go for a walk around the nature reserve, heading for the woods where there some activities. “It’s all about letting the children decide what to do,” says one of the volunteers. “Why are there so many logs,” chips in one of the children to which Craig replies: “Because this is a nature reserve we like to keep the wood that we cut down for the wild beasts to live in.” As the light shimmers on the leaves of the trees the children roam free watched over by parents, grandparents and carers. Harriett and Heidi enjoy creating a picture of a tree with bits of bark and leaves while Henry munches his apple. I have to carry him quite a bit, as usual but he then chooses to get down and do some exploring. While some children start climbing Henry heads for the toy animals such as birds and foxes where he is encouraged to place them in the landscape and make dens and nests out of leaves and twigs.
It’s a great way of discovering nature and during the session wild mini beasts like beetles, earwigs, slugs and snails are found. “Look at this violet ground beetle,” says Craig who has captured one in a specimen jar for closer examination. “Look at its shiny violet edges.” It’s interesting to see how a centipede can be so still as to appear dead and then all of a sudden it moves to hide under a leaf. In the hot weather, we are told that such creatures are drawn to shady more damp areas so become even more difficult to track. There’s such a rich variety of wildlife to see including a plethora of butterflies. It’s a very peaceful area. Other activities include printmaking, which the children really love: placing some luscious greenery such as fern or ivy on a white cloth, folding it over and then hitting it repeatedly with a wooden hammer. Apparently this idea comes from Japan and it’s very effective. There’s a bucket of clay soil from the reserve and Harriett and I get stuck in creating a fox and a flower, which we push on the bark of a nearby tree – great fun. Then there’s making pictures with hoops or simply playing with them, whatever the children decide to do. Henry is drawn to the toy dinosaurs that he plays with happily. On another occasion the rain is persistent with continual downpours but this doesn’t prevent a thoroughly enjoyable trek in the woods where we all enjoy playing with water and seeing a frog. Throughout these sessions the children’s behaviour is good and the hour and a half slot is just the right amount of time to keep their attention. It typically ends with a story and then a song about what we have done. It is only when we arrive home that behaviour deteriorates and we’re back to normal! Written by Tim Saunders www.hiwwt.org.uk/
Oh how we long for the brighter, warmer days when we can get stuck into our gardening again. I always feel that February is a bit of a ‘non-month’ though thankfully it’s a bit shorter. It feels that there is nothing to do but hunker down and watch telly, but not so! Try Microgreens, they are fun for children and adults alike. You can use almost any vegetable seed to grow Microgreens (some are tastier than others, though), but a lot of companies offer special microgreen seed mixes that are a great option for first-timers For example, Amazon, Ebay and most noted seed suppliers. JOBS FOR FEBRUARY Permanently potted plants are often overlooked, apart from watering. They need care and attention just as much as a plant in the garden. If you do water, do it sparingly, but don’t leave them bone dry. There are plenty of plants to prune, so see a website such as RHS.org for further details of this and any of the subjects in this article. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed. Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear, to prevent the plants becoming leggy. The more you look around, the more there is to do and, to brighten up your days, the daffodils are starting to appear. Some are really early and pop up at the start of the year whilst others wait until March to glorify our roundabouts, verges and gardens and remind us of better things to come in 2019. Come along to our monthly meeting; “From Farmer’s Field to Fruit and Flowers -Developing a Garden in France.” Presented by Gillian Taylor on Wednesday 27th February at; The Junior School, Oak Road, Ridgemede, SO32 1EP at 7.30pm (doors open 7.15pm). Hampshire Collegiate School, on the outskirts of Romsey, will hold its next open morning on Tuesday 12th March (9.00am-12.00pm).
WICKHAM HISTORY BOARDS PROJECT LAUNCHED WITH NATIONAL LOTTERY SUPPORT
realisation of the project on Saturday 26th January with an official opening on the Village Green, Bridge Street, where three of the twelve boards are located.
Wickham now has twelve local history boards at key locations around the village. Each board highlights different aspects of Wickham’s history using many wonderful old photos and illustrations.
Results matter at Hampshire Collegiate School. That is why teaching is exceptional, classes are small, pupils receive a tailored curriculum and every child is monitored and assessed continuously. Last summer, the school achieved its best set of A Level results with nearly half of all pupils going on to Russell Group universities and more pupils attained the top grades at GCSE.
There are some fascinating stories too: why was a horse a regular at a Wickham pub, what was a “water meadow” and why is one of our mills named after an American warship? Visitors can use their smartphone at each board to link to more information, photos and stories on the Wickham History Society website. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project has opened up Wickham’s history from it’s first settlement to modern times. Thanks to the hard work of local volunteers from Wickham History Society and an £8k grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, joint sponsors Wickham History Society and Wickham Parish Council celebrated the
RUN FOR ROWANS 24 FEBRUARY
During the morning, you will be able to chat to children and staff at the Nursery, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form, take part in lessons and see the school’s extensive facilities, which are nestled in 130 acres of beautiful wood and parkland at Embley Park. You will learn more about the school’s core purpose of helping each child to be their best by equipping them with the competence to succeed academically, the confidence to be their own character and instilling in them a compassion for the world.
At the opening ceremony Cllr Angela Clear, Chair of Wickham Parish Council, said: “We are very grateful for the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund which has made the Wickham History Boards project possible. We know many visitors to Wickham are keen to know more about our lovely village and we hope these history boards will help make their trip even more interesting and enjoyable.”
Our 2019 Charity event is an event with a difference. The Run for Rowans is a road 5k on closed roads around Wickham and Swanmore. The twist that we are using the race to help one of your regular runners, raise money for The Rowans Hospice, a place that has touched the hearts of many of us. All finishers will receive a medal. The race will be timed, with trophies being presented to the winners. Entry is £14, and you can enter yourself at: www.ruralrunningevents.com/event/ run-for-rowans
From class representation student council to leading sailing, skiing and golf programmes, pupils become accustomed to responsibility and accountability and go on to achieve outstanding results. Last November, the school came second at the National Schools Indoor Open Ski Racing Championships. On the water, as part of the school’s expanding sailing and powerboat programme, Hampshire Collegiate School pupils were the fastest team of young sailors in the 2018 Round the Island Race. Many day pupils use the school’s private home-school minibus service which runs across Hampshire and Wiltshire, with routes covering the Andover villages.Yet the vibrant and friendly boarding house provides an opportunity for students to live, learn and work together on a full time, weekly or flexi boarding basis. LIVE AND LET THRIVE S
he hasn’t been in the spare room for a while. Sitting on the bed, not knowing what to do with herself. Where to put herself. Surgery didn’t quite sort it and now there’s the smell of radiation in her nose. Impossible - it doesn’t smell of anything, but real or not, it’s there. Conversely, she can’t smell anything else. Bizarrely, everything tastes of cream, even her tears as she licks them from her deeply, unnaturally tanned top lip. Vaguely aware that there are only four spiders. Robbie’s gone then. “Love?” Blessim is calling up the stairs. His poor face wears a look of haunted apprehension. “Yes, I’m just coming down.” He’s taken to driving her into the forest. Says the trees are good for her, something about positive ions? She goes because she’s no energy to say ‘no’. And it doesn’t really matter where she feels like she’s dying, home or away. ................................................................ It crossed her mind to end it all, but she couldn’t summon the enthusiasm. And now the treatment’s over. With sympathy in their voices they’d said she’d feel worse before she felt better. They were right, but at least there’s the hope that she’ll feel well again, happy again, fancy a curry again. She’s drifted into the spare room. The bin bags are still there. Events overtook her before she had a chance to adios them. It’s an ill wind, her own mother would have said - her daughter’s clothes actually look pretty good on her. They always did have similar taste. Five spiders. Robbie’s back then. He looks bigger. ................................................................ Blessim has discovered and embraced the ethos of de-cluttering. He’s cleared out his loft, his shed, his man drawer and the eBay bag. Blessim has also embraced car booting. It was a warm autumn and, feeling a bit better, she finds it pleasant sitting in a deckchair, beside the van, in a field, on a Sunday morning. Putting the cash in the bedside drawer, next to the bangles, she
thinks the room needs a bit of a dusting. Back down to four spiders. Robbie’s gone again then. That didn’t last long. ................................................................ Only three left; leggy, smallish and medium. With no sign of any flies, she’s starting to suspect that the spiders might be eating each other. The grisly remains (no body, just legs) of the gangly one by the light fitting seems to proves her right. That’s grim. And when she’d been to see them for her birthday – the band, not the spiders - there were only three by then. Wondering what happened to that other tall one, she laughs out loud. No.. unlikely they ate him. Like childbirth, the memories of the treatment are starting to dwindle. Blessim’s expression has resumed its benign good humour, although he’s still insisting on a weekly walk in the forest. Sweet. ................................................................ Her girl’s return is imminent! Making the spare bed with clean bedclothes scented with ‘fresh sky’, or so she hopes, the old sense of smell isn’t what it was. Ditto the old sense of taste, but she’s been cooking her daughter’s favourites and loading up the freezer; lasagne, chicken fajitas, chilli, cottage pie. KP and chief taster, Blessim hasn’t stopped smiling. The strange tan has faded and she feels well. You can’t really see the scars and, on a small screen, neither could her daughter. And she herself had not guessed that the love that took her girl to the other side of the world had faded too. Seems they’d both been faketiming. One spider left. Medium. Gary? He seems to be the last one standing and she feels it’s time he was free to make beautiful music outside in the Virginia creeper. “Goodbye Gary. I love you, but if she clocks you tomorrow she’ll freak. And she’s Back for Good, Gary, my baby’s Back for Good!” In a voice ruined by radiation, she sings. © 2019 Lucia Foster-Found www.luciafosterfound.com

THE HOUSING MARKET – 2018 AND NOW INTO 2019 2018 started with the beast from the east and was then followed by one of the hottest summers on record and even the prospect of a World Cup victory had people tingling with excitement.
of Brexit and general negativity. So what do we do? Does life stop? Indeed, further information recently released by the Land Registry indicates that property values fell 0.1% since October 2018 meaning the average house price is now £247,430. So not a great welcome to 2019.Yet home movers are still active, despite all of the above, in their tens of thousands.
However as we start 2019 news reaches us that in the last quarter of 2018 almost half of all property sales in England and Wales fell through before completion and overall, for the year 2018, nearly 30% of transactions did not proceed to completion. We also read continually the indication that there is a lack of supply and affordability with new buyer enquiries falling.
The conveyancing process in England and Wales is unusual in the fact that no one is bound to do anything until exchange of contracts, and exchange can take many weeks to reach and generally takes far too long. Hardly surprising to hear of so many fallthroughs, if people are getting cold feet for waiting too long. So how can we minimise the impact of fall-throughs?
Yet, what is not in doubt is the importance of the housing market to the economy, as the Government frequently reminds us that they are determined to build more properties. However, at the same time we are confronted by constant media suggestions about the state of the economy, and the constant presence
CONVEYANCERS AND ESTATE AGENTS
With the influx of online estate agents forcing a race to a lower and lower commission rate, it is hardly surprising that the vetting of buyers is not as thorough in many quarters, thus it is inevitable that such ‘buyers’ come up short and cause abortive deals. Indeed, the increase in
online estate agents who take an upfront fee, and so are paid before they lift a finger does not help, as well as estate agents insisting that their seller and buyer use their referral paying conveyancer of dubious quality. Is it not worth a seller and indeed a buyer client spending that few hundred pounds more to have an estate agent manage their sale, who recommends a properly qualified conveyancer? The quality of your conveyancer is crucial, as quality will deliver pace, and it will ensure you minimise the chances of moving into a property with legal defects. Selecting a conveyancer, as with an estate agent, on how cheap they are, is a recipe for disaster, and potential fall-through. At Trethowans we demand impressive conveyancing from our team, offering a fixed fee quote (no hidden extras) regular client and estate agent updates, experienced lawyers (not just to offer pace, but lawyers who can actually spot legal defects and can quickly solve them) and conveyancers targeting exchange with a maximum of 4 weeks, chasing the slow lawyers. Brexit may loom, the media may portray doom and gloom, but people continue to move and live their lives. Make Trethowans your conveyancers in 2019 and secure impressive conveyancing. www.trethowans.com

BISHOP'S WALTHAM ROTARY CLUB FEBRUARY NEWS LOCAL LUNCH CLUBS Every week Swanmore, Shedfield and Bishop’s Waltham host a luncheon club for locals, and sometimes the only time some people get out of the house might be this weekly luncheon. “ We were delighted to have your support, (this Christmas). We regularly run at a loss and have to raise cash as best we can and hunt out whatever grants are available, so your [BW Rotary Club] donation was wonderful." Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club (BWRC) made significant donations to four local Lunch Clubs in the lead-up to Christmas. These Clubs work tirelessly to provide a convivial lunch for so many people, especially for those living on their own and for the more senior members of the community. Traditionally, the Lunch Clubs provide the Christmas Lunch free - and as there is so much more involved they are very much in need of some financial assistance. BISHOP’S WALTHAM HOUSE CARE HOME Some clients find it difficult to participate in group-based music activity and it was
suggested that they could also get involved in ‘making music’ on an individual basis, using apps. on an iPad.
people who contributed. We hope the children enjoyed Father Christmas visiting. The funds collected will be used for local needy causes.
BWRC reacted swiftly to this idea and procured two iPads (specially discounted from PLATES PC in BW) and delivered them to BW House just before Christmas.
WINE TASTING Friday 22nd February 2019 7.30 PM Jubilee Hall. This event aims to raise funds for: The Rainbow Centre; Macmillan Nurses; and Lymphoma Support. The event is sponsored by: Kavanagh’s Budgens and Laithwaites, and many other local traders.
These were an instant hit, as can be seen in the attached photo where “Bob” (96 years young), is seen to be interacting with one of the iPads.
CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS £4,752.02 was collected during the two weeks leading up to Christmas in and around Bishop's Waltham, Fair Oak, Wickham and Waltham Chase. A big thank you to all those

HOME COMMUNITY from the Foodbank coordinator Sue Pardon, who tells us that in the period February to December (but not including Christmas) the project has helped over 700 people in this area. A lot of the people being referred to Foodbank are unable to work due to illness and the long time-lapse in payments resulting from changes in the benefit system. Most of us would think of the Meon Valley area as an affluent part of the UK, with few social problems, but these figures demonstrate the harsh reality of life for some in 2019.
SANTA AND THE “GILET JAUNES” RAISE SOME CASH FOR CHARITY! December is always a full-on month for the Meon Valley Lions, both for fundraising and providing support to those in need across the various communities up and down the Meon Valley. Most evenings and Saturdays saw us out and about, fundraising with Father Christmas and his sleigh, from East and West Meon in the north, down to Wickham in the south. It is brilliant to see the reaction of so many excited children when Santa and his brightly-lit sleigh pass by. The smiles and laughter provide morethan ample motivation for the team to drag on the damp boots and hi-vis vests, for another night of charity Christmas collections. Thanks to your wonderful support again this year, these Christmas collections have raised £4,441.69 for our charity account, including one spectacular evening in Swanmore (west) where we amassed a record-breaking £526.09.
We’d like to thank everyone who donated so generously again in 2018 – you can be sure we will be working hard in 2019 to ensure it is spent wisely on local groups and individuals in need. All the cash collected is used by the Lions for our charity activities, with none of your money absorbed by administrative overheads or incidental costs. Typically, 80% of the money we raise each year goes back into projects in the Meon Valley area to support individuals and groups in need, with the balance going to national and international disasters such as the Indonesian tsunami. The Santa collections however are ring-fenced for Meon Valley causes. If you missed Santa this time, it’s not too late to help us with a donation – we’ve gone all “tech” and have an online donation facility on the homepage of our website! One of the local groups we support with the money we raise, is the Meon Valley Foodbank to whom Lions recently donated a sum of £300. It was great to receive a letter of thanks
A PICTURESQUE RIDE THROUGH THE MEON VALLEY
At Christmas time, the Lions were also actively involved with another of our local charities called HomeStart, a fantastic voluntary group which provides local support services for families whose members are, for whatever reason, going through tough times financially or emotionally. We put together eight Christmas food hampers for families HomeStart had identified would be struggling over the festive season. It was great to see a Twitter post from HomeStart containing a photograph from one of the recipients, showing a before and after shot of the impact of the hamper on their kitchen cupboard. We must also mention Rachel, the Manager of the One Stop shop in Wickham. On a cold, wet Saturday morning she offered our collectors a welcome coffee and then got chatting about what Lions do. Next thing she'd disappeared into the shop only to return with a food and goodies hamper for our Christmas appeal. Fantastic - thanks Rachel! And that's a couple of days after enduring the stress of a ram raid on the shop front. The Lions rounded off the festive season with a Christmas meal at Greens Restaurant in Wickham, where Lions and their partners were able to look back and celebrate another fine year of fun and fundraising. www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk next stop The Old Forge for a light lunch then it’s mostly country lanes through Boarhunt, Curdrige and Wickham back to West End. The route has a few inclines but nothing to daunting and we will never leave anyone behind. Please bring clothing appropriate for the weather, a spare inner tube to fit your bike and some cash for coffee etc, and a lock to secure your bike. A helmet is a advised. Starting point is on the corner of Moorgreen Road, and Botley Road by the park bench. SO30 3EA. Ride Distance: 34.2 miles Ride Type: Hybrid (road tyres), road Estimated time: 3 hours
On Tuesday 19th February at 10am, join us for a ride through the Meon Valley visiting the Medieval Market Town of Bishops Waltham where we have the option to stop for coffee. We
will then continue through the country Lanes to Hambledon, home to what is reputed to be the oldest cricket club in the country, we pass by Hambledon vineyard before arriving at our

Frequently Asked Questions
Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.
