KIWI ENCOUNTER P icture yourself sitting by the pool relaxing after hard days sight-seeing, a good book in one hand and your favourite tipple in the other, around you are the well manicured lawns of a subtropical garden with views the Coromandel Hills and Firth of Thames. You wander indoors via the terrace, through the patio doors to be welcomed by the open stone fire, beamed ceiling and antique furniture of this most beautiful of Guest lounges. Welcome to New Zealand.

It doesn’t sound bad does it? This is just one of the many unique accommodations that you could find yourself staying at by speaking to the staff of Amity Travel about arranging a self drive holiday of New Zealand. Amity Travel believes that your holiday adventure should be a Kiwi experience from start to finish and that includes where you stay.

With a large portfolio of boutique B&BS, farmhouses, ecolodges and self catering cottages and apartments there is little need to stay in one of the multi-national hotels that could be anywhere in the world. New Zealanders are a naturally open and friendly society, keen to share their personal experience and knowledge of their local area, this can be a massive bonus picking up little tit bits of advice (such as avoiding tourist traps) that help you

FEATURE to get the best out of your holiday time. Many of the homes will treat you like long lost friends rather than paying guests, offering you the option to dine with them in the evening or to partake in local events, giving you the kind of holiday memories that will live with you forever.

Variety is the spice of life and you get plenty of that with so many different styles of accommodation, one day you will find yourself waking up to glorious views across a picturesque bay whilst staying at a state of the art lodge perched high on a cliff top and the next you will be opening your curtains to views of rolling hills and farmland before heading off for breakfast on the terrace of a very rustic homestead from a bygone era. Farming is big part of the way of life in New Zealand and many of the farms have opened themselves up to the public offering you the chance to stay on a working farm, where you can try your hand at milking the cows, feeding the chickens or just take a guided walk. Eco-Lodges are at the forefront of modern tourism and New Zealand is leading the way here too, these self sustainable lodges offer a very different stay to anything else on offer and are a welcome addition to any holiday. So while hotels have their place, with such a variety of accommodation as you work your way around the stunning

landscape of these beautiful islands there really is no excuse for staying in identical hotel rooms night after night. If you would like to walk the stunning beaches of the Abel Tasman, go wine tasting in the vineyards of Marlborough, take a cruise along the Doubtful Sound, hike across a glacier or just relax on the beaches of the Coromandel, in fact the list is endless, and top it all off by staying in some of the most welcoming and friendly accommodation, then you need to make an appointment to discuss your holiday ideas with Jeff, Sue & Elaine at Amity Travel, experts in bespoke travel and itineraries of the Southern Hemisphere.

C

orhampton Golf Club is a ‘Hidden Gem’ of Hampshire Golf situated 10 miles south of Winchester (M3), within easy travelling of both Southampton and Portsmouth and is set in the beautiful South Downs National Park. It plays 6378 yards (white tees), 6082 (yellows) and 5788 (reds). FOOD & DRINK REVEIW

DASHI A CULINARY EXPERIENCE I was delightfully surprised to savour such a symphony of flavours – tantalising the taste-buds with new sensations. The delicacy of flavours and textures complemented each other perfectly. Even what appeared to be the simplest of small plates, a Wakame salad (seaweed drizzled in Yuzu-Ponzu sauce and Shiso, a plant leaf from the mint family), had multiple levels of taste. I moved on to try the Tori Kara-Age (chicken marinated in soy and then deep fried) which was light, with not a trace of oil to be seen. Then there was Kimchi; a pickled spicy cabbage made in house by Miff ’s team. I ate this alongside the other dishes and it provided a pleasant kick of heat, whilst not overpowering the subtle tastes coming from everything else.

Alresford welcomes adds a new dimension to eating out with the opening of Japanese restaurant, Dashi A few weeks after the opening of Dashi, a new Japanese restaurant in Alresford, I was invited along by owner Miff Kayum to come and sample their traditional and modern Japanese cuisine. This would be a culinary adventure for me, as I have little prior knowledge of Japanese food, other than poorquality supermarket sushi. Miff asked if I wanted to choose from the menu or let him pick a few dishes. Being a complete novice of the cuisine, I opted to let Miff do the selection, and what an experience it was! I was presented with a small banquet of delicacies on a variety of different plates - so many that there was barely a space available on the table. It was clear from Miff that he had such passion for the food, and his knowledge of the ingredients and techniques was second to none. For me, the highlights were the Sashimi, Tempura, Sushi, and Kimchi, but there were just too many beautiful tastes to cover in my review.

Finally, we were presented with ‘Yellow Tail Nimono’ by the chef; a Japanese sea fish steeped in Asparagus, Daikon, Soy, Dashi and Mirin.Wow! I could not help but be overwhelmed by the care, presentation and preparation that had been put into this dish. The ingredients of all Dashi’s food are completely fresh and sourced from unique suppliers around the world – local where possible such as the Winchester Roll – but mostly very specialist with years of experience in Japanese cuisine. Overall, I found this voyage of discovery a pure delight. I have discovered a new cuisine that was light to eat, of the purest quality, healthy, and above all bursting with unique, fresh flavours. I have only just begun my exploration but I plan to work my way through their comprehensive menu, and it appears Miff is already considering introducing more plates in the not too distant future. I can't wait to return. AUTUMN IS THE IDEAL TIME TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT CAN BE DONE;

O

ften lawns take a bit of a beating over the dry, hot summer months and whilst August has been a bit of a wash-out, we did have very high temperatures and very little rain during June and July. Neither of these conditions are much help for lawns. In fact, the wet August weather we have all been experiencing recently is now creating the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from any renovation work carried out over the next few weeks. Plants need warmth, moisture and good levels of light in order to grow well. Usually all three of these are present over the autumn months, making now the ideal time to improve your lawn So, you might be wondering why your lawn is looking a little worsefor-wear and what can be done about it now. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, what might be the cause? Understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. There is little point in spending time and money treating the symptoms of your poor lawn if the underlying cause has not been addressed. All that will happen is the symptom will return again next year and you’ll have to deal with it all over again. Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction where the soil is so solid that it affords the grass plants no real opportunity to grow well. The compacted soil drains poorly due to the lack of air gaps within the structure of the soil itself and the grass roots find it difficult to spread, resulting in stunted growth and weak plants more susceptible to disease, drought and death. Relieve the compaction first by aerating the lawn, and then you can begin to introduce new grass plants by over-seeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking. Or for larger lawns, mechanical scarification. Not all lawns need it however, but if they do it’s really important to carry this process out before the weather gets too cold and the grass stops growing. Lawns need time to recover from scarification as it is a harsh process. Not only do they need time, but warm, wet weather is essential too. Both scarification and aeration create ideal surface conditions for overseeding. Unlike re-seeding, where the existing vegetation is removed completely and a new seed-bed created for the sowing of a new lawn, over-seeding works with what you already have by adding new grass seeds to your existing lawn and helping to blend areas of weak growth into other areas of your lawn more naturally. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. Much better than re-turfing too.

Great progress has been made over recent years in the development of new grass varieties that germinate quicker, establish sooner, are lusher and greener and more resistant to drought, diseases and pests. Introducing new grass to an old lawn makes a massive difference. It is however really important to deal with any weeds before reseeding begins. New grass plants are susceptible to the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Therefore manage the weed issue first and then get new grass plants growing. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks. Any nutritional issues should also be addressed before over-seeding and autumn lawn renovation works begin. After all, your existing lawn will need all the help it can get to recover and the new seed introduced will be looking for the right nutritional support to help it develop and thrive. Applying the correctly balanced autumn fertiliser is essential to preparing your lawn for the tough winter months ahead. It helps develop the roots and will keep your lawn looking green and healthy throughout the winter without increasing the need for mowing. Finally, autumn is the ideal time to apply treatments for ant’s nests in the lawn which have been a real problem this year. It’s important to deal with these before they become dormant over winter resulting in those unsightly mounds of soil they bring to the surface next spring as the colony increases the size of its underground nest. Speak to a lawn care professional now to plan ahead for the perfect lawn next year. You might be surprised how much improvement can be made this year and you can then enjoy your renovated lawn throughout the autumn and into next season. THERE'S A RAT IN THE KITCHEN (WHAT AM I GONNA DO..)

ayers pellets. Check. Mite powder. Check. Feeder, drinker, corn. Check, check, check. Or maybe, looking at the prices, that should be cheque, cheque, cheque.. Pushing around the trolley, she pushed aside the thought of the mounting cost and daydreamed of golden-yolked scotch eggs, smoked salmon scrambled eggs and eggs poached to bouncy, runny perfection with griddled asparagus. Salivating, she trundled off to the checkout. The run and ark were being delivered the next day (big cheque, monster cheque) and the day after that they were to collect their flock. And they weren’t going cheap either.

and was presented with a rat. It was on the kitchen work surface, closely investigating the pasta maker with curious paws and twitching whiskered nose. Until she screamed and dropped the spirit vinegar, that is.

The children were excited, she was excited. Her husband The Accountant, not so much. His childhood memories of hen husbandry largely involved being chased by the bad-tempered cockerel so admired by his mother. Although, when the bird outlived his usefulness, the coqau-vin served up by his pragmatic mama had apparently been unforgettable and particularly delicious. Contrary to popular belief, revenge was a dish best eaten hot, it seemed.

In the event, she didn’t have to say anything. Gazing out of the window, drinking his early morning coffee,The Accountant spotted the rat on the bird table. He all but trampled her in his rush to the study and she nearly dropped the pasta maker she was retrieving from the dishwasher.

Later, over supper, the family were deep in discussion. “Shouldn’t we name them when we get them? I mean, the names we choose now might not suit them.” Daughter hadn’t fully grasped the notion that the chickens, all being the same breed, would be practically identical. “Mine’s Thor.” Son was Marvel obsessed – either he hadn’t twigged or, more likely, didn’t really care that the chickens would all be girls. “Am I allowed to choose one?” The Accountant suddenly appeared mildly interested. Surprised, she shrugged “Of course darling.” “Margot.” He seemed very decided. “Durrell?” She’d been watching the series. “Robbie.” He sighed – he’d been watching something else, apparently. Moving on, she said “Well I can’t decide between Boudicca and Emmeline.” Perhaps Daughter had a point after all and she would wait to see which name suited her chicken best. Some weeks later, Margot,Thor, Scarlet and Boudicca (she pecked the others) had settled in. The family were egg-bound and she was quite relieved that Thor and Boudicca were broody and stopped laying. After announcing that he was very ‘over’ eggs in any disguise (and there had been many),The Accountant found the receipt for the state-of-the-art Ark. “With the initial capital investment of equipment and on-going expenses, be dead long before we recoup the costs in eggs” he remarked, dourly. “We’ll buy more chickens when these die.” Honestly, what a doom-monger. “No. Us. We’ll have grown old and died.” He explained in a voice dripping with sarcasm. Ah. Well yes, it had been the top of the range habitat and eye-wateringly expensive… Whilst pickling another jar of eggs the following morning and wondering how to resurrect his feeble enthusiasm for her feathered flock, she turned

The rat scuttled off to whence it came. Her country-wise friends spoke with one voice; ‘when you’ve got chickens, you’ve got rats. Everyone knows that’. But not her. And what to do? Not poison. She shuddered. Of a live-and-let-live disposition, she was conflicted. Also, a bit loath to tell The Accountant that the dearest eggs on earth came with free vermin. Albeit vermin with a penchant for kitchenalia.

Moments later he returned with an air rifle she’d forgotten he had - and a childlike look of glee. What happened between bookkeeper and rodent, she preferred not to know, but a notable lack of celebration indicated neither were harmed in the skirmish. Retreating to an oasis of cookery books and instruction manuals, she used her lovely fresh eggs and her long-ignored pasta machine to make batch after batch of lovely fresh pasta... Sheets for lasagne and ravioli, ribbons for stroganoff and goulash, spaghetti for bolognese, vongole.. Some she dried on the clothes airer, some she froze. Spaghetti carbonara was on the menu that evening. The Accountant and children pronounced dinner to be delicious, before retreating to other rooms. When her husband emerged from his study to join her on the sofa and kiss her, she caught a manly and not unpleasant whiff of gun oil. He was carrying his newly rediscovered air rifle and smiling “That fantastic meal reminded me of our honeymoon in Italy and I’m so glad you’re finally using that pasta gadget you badgered me for Christmas – when was that – 3 years ago? Oh – by the way, I’ve ordered some targets, in case they arrive and you wondered what they were. What are we watching?” “The Durrells on catch-up, but I did notice that Wolf of Wall Street is on Freeview if you’d rather?” she glanced at him sideways – the other Margot was in that one. “Keep the Durrells on - you like it and I read it at school. Anyway I was thinking – what about Corfu for a holiday?” He rubbed the gun’s barrel with an oily cloth and was in chirpy mood, so she felt it best not to mention the issue of leaving the chickens. “Of course, we’ll have to find someone responsible to look after the hens properly whilst we’re away.” He added cheerily. Poultry problem? Between them, she and the rat might just have cracked it.

62ND CURDRIDGE COUNTRY SHOW & BARN DANCE, A FANTASTIC EVENT FOR ALL The Curdridge Show took place on Saturday 13th July. The weather was glorious, the traders exhibiting at the Show were enthusiastic and passionate about being part of this popular event, and the entertainers performing were well received by the many visitors who flocked through the entry gates, some even arriving before we were officially open! Besides being a traditional, family-friendly Show, the purpose of the event is to raise funds for the Charity responsible for managing and maintaining the Curdridge Reading Room and Recreation Grounds. Whilst accounts are still being finalised, early indications are that the Show raised a significant amount of money to go towards safeguarding the future of what is the hub of the village – The Reading Rooms. Tickets for the Barn Dance, which took place in the evening following the Show, sold out before

the event. Everyone seemed to have a great time with festivities continuing until late in the evening. Thank you to Bursledon Village Band for providing the music and leading the dancing. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to organise and run the Show and the Barn Dance, and to the many local businesses who supported the event either through sponsorship, donating prizes for the Grand Draw or by lending equipment for use on show-day.

Abigail’s Party is a classic comedy of manners. What starts as an innocent small party to greet new neighbours in a respectable middle class neighbourhood quickly degenerates into a slanging match with disastrous consequences.

For full details about the Show, please visit www.curdridgeshow.co.uk. The date for next year’s Show has already been set for Saturday 11th July 2020. Please put this date in your diary and come and enjoy this fantastic event! Now seen by over 8 million theatregoers, this critically-acclaimed ghost story follows a lawyer, obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, as he engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul The play, written by Susan Hill, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt, and directed by Robin Herford, is a PW Productions Ltd production.

WEST END PHENOMENON CELEBRATES 30 YEARS ON THE STAGE Celebrating over three decades of thrilling audiences across the world,The Woman in Black is coming to Nuffield Southampton Theatres Campus 23 – 28 September.

The 1970s: a period remembered for its lurid wallpaper, questionable taste in clothing, increasing consumerism and political and economic uncertainty. It also gave us one of the most popular stage and TV shows of the decade: Abigail’s Party. This September,Titchfield Festival Theatre is delighted to start its exciting new season by welcoming this timeless classic to the Oak Theatre stage.

The production’s huge popularity has reached a global level, having toured to the United States, South America,Tokyo and Singapore. In 2012, Susan Hill’s novel The Woman in Black was released as a major motion picture, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which became the highest grossing British horror film in 20 years. The sequel to that film,The Woman in Black 2: Angel Of Death, came out in 2014. Tickets are available from the Box Office 023 8067 1771 or online at nstheatres.co.uk

Richard Hackett is the director of Abigail’s Party, and this is a culmination of a 40 year ambition having first watched it on TV in 1978. Richard said, “I have always admired the work of Mike Leigh who wrote Abigail’s Party. Over the years Leigh has been a real inspiration to me, someone that I consider to be a role model. I am therefore immensely proud to direct this play. Richard continued, “Abigail’s Party remains popular for many reasons – not least because the jokes are still very funny! All of the characters are almost equally awful which makes for an entertaining piece of theatre. “Casting for the play has been actually quite difficult because we have such an amazing talented group of actors now here at Titchfield that I could have cast the various roles five times over.We have set the play firmly in the 1970s, with period music, decoration and clothing. It promises to be great fun and I am sure our patrons will enjoy it.” Abigail’s Party opens on Wednesday 11th September until Saturday 21st September 2019 at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre,Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane,Titchfield PO14 4BG. Sunday matinee on 15th September at 2.30pm. For more information, please go to http:// titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/or contact our Box Office on 01329 556156.

THE AUTUMN COLLECTION EASTWOOD FINE ART Two years ago, when art dealer Josie Eastwood was looking for a new home and potential art gallery, she passed a long low barn in the village of Longstock, and on the wall was a mosaic of a Picasso painting, ‘The Boy and Dove’. Josie took this as an omen, the long low building could one day be an art gallery. Two years later, and after lengthy renovation work, the old Leckford Estate tractor shed has transformed into a beautiful contemporary light filled gallery. Work to the manor house beside the barn has just been completed, and paintings and sculpture will be displayed around this during some of the gallery’s exhibitions. On Friday September 27th the annual Eastwood Fine Art Autumn Exhibition opens at the new space in Longstock. Josie has spent the past few months travelling the length and breadth of the UK selecting work from artist’s studios for this group exhibition. The gallery will be hung with these new finds by 30 artists, and sculpture will be placed around the garden. 'COOL DOWN' - HENRIETTA DUBREY

We are thrilled to be introducing the work of several new artists, amongst them Richard Cook, a very well-established artist who is based in Cornwall, and who has shown at the Tate in St Ives. Also joining the stable of artists is ceramicist Sandy Brown, whose stunning earthenware work has been exhibited at the prestigious Sotheby’s Sculpture Show at Chatsworth. Along with paintings, dry points, drawings, and ceramics, there will be sculpture for your garden and home. Each exhibition includes work by some of our favourite artists, and work by exciting new ‘finds’. There is a wide price range of work on show.

'BEFORE THE START II (TIGER)' - JUDY BUXTON

The new art gallery stages five annual exhibitions, and in between, we are open by appointment. The gallery, established in 1996, has always worked closely with interior designers, and private collectors. Josie regularly visit client’s houses to get a feel for the room and space needing artwork, and for the light and palette. This gives her a very good idea of what might work best in the situation, and to begin the search, and put forward some suggestions. A painting hung in the right situation sings, but one placed in the wrong situation can equally get totally lost. Josie loves this hunt for the right piece, be it a sculpture for the garden or a painting for the kitchen, and the rewards of finding the perfect match, are seeing it in situ. Many of the projects the gallery has worked on over the years, have featured in interiors magazines. Josie will be at the gallery throughout the Autumn Show, and happy to meet you and discuss any potential search for artwork that you may need help with. Getting it right can totally change and enhance a room. 'HARE SULPTURE' - CLARE TRENCHARD

Occasionally the gallery hosts interior pop-ups, including rugs, lamps, painted furniture, and lampshades and other original pieces that have caught Josie’s eye. To receive our quarterly newsletter, and to join the invitation list please visit the website: www.josieeastwood.com.You can also follow Josie’s studio visits on Instagram. NEW BEGINNINGS At the start of the year the Family team at Trethowans advertised a free workshop called 'New Beginnings', running across the year in different locations. The workshop is designed for people facing separation to help attendees improve self-esteem, offer coping strategies and provide tips to support their children. Ultimately, with the help of trained professionals, the workshop provides practical tools for developing an effective co-parenting relationship postseparation and ensures attendees have the tools necessary to maintain their own well-being, and that of their children, through the difficult process of divorce. Hosted by Trethowans, the professional speakers include Ashley Palmer and Leigh Moriarty, authors of The Handover Book and experts in child and family psychotherapy, Nikki Emerton who is a Master Practitioner in NLP, Hypnotherapist, Life Coach and Lightning Process® Practitioner with qualifications in safeguarding adults and children, and Lara Lauder, a qualified, award winning Colour Analyst & Personal Stylist. We have so far hosted two out of the four workshops, which have taken place in Poole and Salisbury and thought we would catch up with some of our experts. Ashley Palmer has said ”Separating is painful. You feel an immense sense of confusion, loss and uncertainty as to what to do next. Keeping everyone feeling safe is important whilst you navigate the process of separation. With a sense of possibility, you can create a world where your children will thrive. Knowing where to start and what you can do can be incredibly challenging.

Knowledge is key, having information and strategies in place can help everything seem less daunting. Attendees of the Trethowans workshops found it incredibly helpful to learn new ways of understanding everyone’s behaviour patterns before, during and after a family separation. I find it incredible that this is a free workshop, guests thought there must be a catch…but no, we are all simply here to help anyone who is finding family separation challenging and exhausting.” Nikki Emerton added “The workshops have been a great place for people who are experiencing similar circumstances to come together, feel accepted and learn a range of skills and strategies to help them through the more challenging times they may face.Trethowans have considered what is the best use of time and have succeeded in providing professionals that can coach on parenting, confidence, selfworth and generally boosting the morale of the participants. I hope that they are able to continue with these workshops in the future as they are a fantastic opportunity for those who attend."

"The workshop was excellent. Really helpful and great to meet people in the same position. Thank you!" RIVER HEALTH Our local rivers - Itchen,Test and Meon, are just three of the seventeen chalk streams that flow into the Solent according to a WWF healthcheck study of Britain's chalk streams in 2014*. The report found that of the 224 chalk streams in the UK only 5% were adequately protected - fragile ecosystems at risk from both pollution and abstraction. The Itchen was singled out as one example where conservation targets were not being met. Why is this still news? Two recent incidents highlight why the risk remains five years on: POLLUTION In June the BBC Countryfile ran a piece on the quality of the river Itchen and found that while the Environment Agency (EA) monitors water quality it fails to address key indicators of river health. The EA admitted to measuring only those pollutants notified by those discharging into the river. This is not an exhaustive list of possible contaminants and cynics call reliance on disclosure akin to 'marking their own homework' - less vigorous policing than you might expect from a regulator.Viewers discovered that former watercress beds, now

owned by a salad packing company, are used to wash imported produce thus increasing the risk of foreign micro-organisms entering the chalk stream. The Environment Agency did not accept this as a potential danger worth monitoring. ABSTRACTION In July the water company Southern Water admitted to having falsified water quality data over a seven year period and was fined by Ofwat. Why did the regulator not pick this up sooner? Presumably, like the Environment Agency, it relied on evidence supplied by those over whom it has oversight and failed to carry out checks using its own staff. While Southern is now under the spotlight for waste water processing, we should not forget that it is a major abstractor of water from chalk streams in order to supply households and businesses in its region. Requests are increasing with consumer demand. Does EA question requests for abstraction provided by the water company, or does it carry out independent rigorous impact assessments on acquifer depletion? To conclude, I would like to believe that our chalk streams are protected by regulators like the Environment Agency and Ofwat, but I am not certain this faith is well placed. Do our regulators have sufficient funds or must they like the WWF seek sponsors like Coca Cola with whom to fund research and thus offer the opportunity of 'greenwash' to commercial operators. it is also worth looking at the ownership of Southern Water to see that customers probably are less important than shareholders! Our streams are delicate ecosystems and need protection now more than ever. * WWF report on Chalk Streams - https://bit.ly/2YNilHW Written by Garry Honey, a local resident and risk consultant who has a passion for chalk stream protection. Several guests will be appearing across both weekends, including Suzannah Lipscomb, Tracy Borman, Alison Weir, Michael Wood and Tom Penn. BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend returns to Winchester from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd November after last year’s hugely successful event. This time round, the venue is the magnificent Guildhall, the Victorian building that sits at the heart of the historic city. Historian Alison Weir will be discussing Anna of Kleve: Queen of Secrets, revealing a charming woman loved by all who knew her – even by the king who rejected her. Historian and broadcaster Lucy Worsley’s illustrated talk takes a tour of the country to see where Jane Austen lived. Dispelling the myth of the cynical lonely spinster, Lucy instead offers us a witty and passionate woman of her time, who refuses to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy. Bestselling author Dan Jones examines the Crusades, in an epic and deeply human history of an revised and had published all her major works, including the timeless Pride and Prejudice. Whether you are new to the museum or a regular visitor, this talk will transport you 'behind the scenes' as you listen to Museum Director, Dr Mary Guyatt, speak about the years of hard work and determination that have gone in to preserving such a unique place of 'pilgrimage' and to building its collection of Austen treasures. LOCAL TEENAGER CHOSEN FOR ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD COURSE

Local teenager Edward Ralls (17) was selected by Fareham College, and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fareham, to take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Course (RYLA). The RYLA course, held at the Tile Barn Activity Centre in the New Forest, ended on Sunday 21st July and Edward came home brimming with enthusiasm and equipped with new life skills which will aid his future career prospects. President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, Bp Michael Cleaves, said: “We sponsor one or two young people in the Fareham area each year to go on a RYLA course to improve their self-confidence, leadership, teamwork and communication skills. assist by selecting, from all their students, the candidates who they think will benefit the most. I’m delighted Edward has enjoyed and benefited from our sponsorship and we look forward to hearing of his experiences shortly.” Developing leadership and teamwork skills feature highly on the course with practical and theoretical problem solving. These aim to enhance the existing skills of candidates and Edward enjoyed the challenges posed. As Edward said “I had to quickly learn how to work with people I had only just met in teamwork situations, such as low ropes, where you had to appraise each other’s abilities to support each other in the best way. I definitely learnt new skills but was also given the opportunity to recognise leadership skills I already had!” Edward came back to Fareham with greater confidence to deal with management opportunities which he hopes will lead to officer entry into the RAF Police. He has already done his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award along with award winning teamwork for the Fareham College Field Gun entry at HMS Collingwood and on the national squad for sports karate. The Rotary Club of Fareham wishes him well with his endeavours and hopes the RYLA course will help him to achieve his career goals. MEON VOICES CHOIR

The 40 regular members of the popular Meon Voices choir are warming up their voices for the start of the Autumn term on September 9th. The choir is based in Bishop’s Waltham and includes singers from all local villages. It has been running for some 50 years, and recently decided to introduce a waiting list for new members because it’s become so popular. The choir is formed from the four main vocal ranges: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass and although each range is currently well-represented by existing members, the organisers welcome applications to join regardless of voice type, for when vacancies arise. There are no auditions and you do not need to be able to read music, but it helps if you can because it reduces the time it takes to learn your part. During the weekly practice sessions, Musical Director Solveig Harris helps each section of the choir to learn the music separately before joining the voices together. Between sessions, members practice at home using various sources such as recordings of each voice part accessible via Drop Box, and on CD, for practicing in the car. The choir sings a wide range of music, usually in the four-part harmony, and these include traditional folk songs, negro spirituals, melodies from musicals, classic popular music and some choral pieces. HOME that all important statement. When it is hot as it has been recently, some conservatory owners may not be enjoying their garden room as much as they would like to. All to often we are told the building is too cold in winter and too hot in summer. As with many industries a requirement to use less energy generally, has driven product innovation and improvements. This is very true of the fenestration market, which has been at the forefront of energy saving products for new build homes and refurbishment projects. Including of course the hundreds of thousands of conservatories that have been installed around the country. Those improvements now mean that we are very capable of changing the frames and roof of an existing building without impacting on the walls and foundations and providing a comfortable space you can use all year round whatever the season!
