POLAR BEAR NECESSITIES
is by plane or a 40-hour train journey from Winnipeg – our recommended option is to fly from Winnipeg and spend 3 or 4 nights in Churchill, this will allow for 2 full days spent viewing the bears.
E
ach year, in the fall, on the west shore of Canada’s Hudson Bay, Polar Bears gather along the shore on the outskirts of Churchill, waiting for the bay to freeze in order to begin the annual hunt for seals. This makes Churchill the self-proclaimed “Polar Bear Capital of the World”. Every fall you can expect in the vicinity of nearly 1,000 bears to pass through Churchill. The annual Polar bear trek to Hudson Bay provides a fantastic opportunity to see these magnificent animals. Amity World Travel offer tours that range from one to seven days in length that can easily be bolted on to a tour of the Canadian Rockies/Alaskan Cruise, etc or work as a standalone holiday. The only way to reach this remote settlement Your two days of Polar Bear viewing will be spent in the Tundra Buggy; Tundra Buggy’s can only be described as a portacabin on oversized wheels. However they are without doubt the most comfortable and safe way to experience the bears in their natural environment. The Buggy will follow a system of established trails, stopping at leisure to enjoy the scenery. Meandering across the cold landscape in the morning light, the tundra looks a bleak, unforgiving wilderness, with low, battered willow bushes dusted with snow, frozen pools, tidal flats and the odd spruce. Despite the bleakness the sage green and pale turquoise tints of the ice have a peculiar beauty about them, contrasting with the
FEATURE golden brown leaves clinging to the trees and the red and yellow ochres of lace-like lichens on the scattered rocks. As you weave your way towards Hudson Bay there is a good chance that you will catch the unmistakable outline of the bears plodding along the horizon, their coats honeycoloured against the pure white of the snow. Upon reaching the shores of Hudson Bay you can expect to find an abundance of polar bears, the majority will carry on with their daily life, as if you are not there. Curiosity will get the better of some and you can expect male bears to approach the buggy, puling themselves up against the side to do a spot of people watching, whilst the mothers will just lay close by with their young in tow. With the opportunity to take photos from the observation deck to the rear of the buggy and a highly knowledgeable guide to keep you informed on all that is going on around, you will find the day soon passes and before you know it you will be heading back to town. The Polar Bears of Churchill are undoubtedly a holiday experience that will live long in the memory, with a choice of tour operators offering an array of options from Adventure tours to the more luxurious and inclusive; it makes sense to speak to Amity World Travel first. Their
experienced staff will be able to steer you through the myriad of choices and take the strain out of tying it all together with any plans you may have for before and after your time in Churchill. The season is short as the bears will be off as soon as the sea ice has formed, which is usually by mid-November, with the high demand to witness this annual migration, early booking for the Autumn of 2020 is highly recommended and will also help you to obtain the best deal available.

WELLBEING brighter. Open blinds, trim trees or add skylights to your home. Sit closer to bright windows while at home or in the office. • Get outside. Take a long walk, eat lunch at a nearby park, or simply sit on a bench and soak up the sun. Even on cold or cloudy days, outdoor light can help — especially if you spend some time outside within two hours of getting up in the morning. • Exercise regularly. Exercise and other types of physical activity help relieve stress and anxiety. Being more fit can make you feel better about yourself.
SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)
This decrease in sunlight may disrupt your body's internal clock and lead to feelings of depression.
SAD is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons —the symptoms start in the Autumn and continue into the Winter months, Symptoms specific to winter-onset SAD may include: Oversleeping, appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates, weight gain and tiredness or low energy
• Serotonin levels. A drop-in serotonin, a brain chemical that affects mood, might play a role in SAD. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop-in serotonin that may trigger depression.
• Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep to help you feel rested, but not too much, as SAD symptoms often lead people to feel like hibernating. Make healthy choices for meals and snacks. Don't turn to alcohol or recreational drugs for relief.
• Melatonin levels. The change in season can disrupt the balance of the body's level of melatonin, which plays a role in sleep patterns and mood.
• Practice stress management. Learn techniques to manage your stress better. Relaxation techniques meditation or music and art therapy.
SOME FACTORS THAT MAY COME INTO PLAY INCLUDE: • Your biological clock. The reduced level of sunlight in fall and winter may cause SAD.

ALRESFORD HEARING STUDIO Ear Wax Ear wax is not actually a bad thing, in fact it is a protection mechanism for the ear canal. The issue only occurs when there is too much. As the ear wax builds up, it blocks the canal causing some issues with hearing. If the ear wax becomes impacted against the ear drum, it can even be painful. Typically, the first time many realise they have a problem is when they have a shower or get out of a swimming pool. Suddenly, they can’t hear out of one or both ears. This is because ear wax is like a sponge, it soaks up the water and expands within the ear canal, completely blocking it. Do you suffer from any of these symptoms? • A feeling of fullness in the ear • The sensation of hearing everything muffled • Mild tinnitus (A Ringing In the ears) • Sudden hearing loss after swimming or showering If any of these symptoms sound familiar then you could have excess ear wax blocking your ear canal.
Business is an independent provider of hearing care solutions owned and operated as a family enterprise by Samuel, Helen & Jodie Longman. Sam is a qualified hearing aid audiologist authorised to practise by the Health care professions council. Prior to establishing this new venture Sam was working for a well-known national hearing company managing one of the companies busiest branches at Ferndown in Dorset, whilst also supporting customers across Hampshire and Dorset through home visits. Helen has been involved in the hearing care industry for many years ultimately responsible for the smooth running of 20 branches for a national chain across the south of England whilst Jodie also has significant experience in customer facing roles and is renowned for delivering exceptional customer service. Sam’s aspiration has always been to open his own Hearing Studio as he passionately believes in delivering a more personal service to customers.
How ear wax build-up occurs Under normal circumstances wax in the ears is totally normal; as we said, we need a little of it to maintain a healthy ear. Wax is produced just inside the entrance to the ear canal. It lubricates the skin and helps prevent dust and air borne bacteria from entering. A normal ear canal has a self-cleaning mechanism, where the small hairs in the canal encourage the wax and shredded skin towards the canal entrance. If there is no hair there or the ear canal is narrow or an unusual shape it is sometimes impeded, resulting in a build-up of wax that may need removing.
After reviewing multiple sites it transpired that one of Sam’s existing customers had a site available and after some discussion Sam & Helen successfully secured premises at 42 West Street in Alresford, which they feel is “in a perfect location to serve the community’’ by offering a fully immersive, friendly and comfortable experience to address all hearing healthcare needs”. Sam will also offer home appointments, outside clinics and audiology education through community & sports clubs by prior arrangement. Sam explains that the company’s mission is “to provide the highest standards of hearing care and the latest technology to the local community, whilst still offering a professional and personal service that is second to none” The Alresford Hearing Studio team will achieve this by offering truly independent advice to each customer on hearing aid provision, wax removal, nosie protection, tinnitus management and all other audiology needs to enhance quality of life.
About the Alresford Hearing Studio We are delighted to announce that the Alresford Hearing Studio opened to serve the local community in August 2019. The

A BIT OF A PICKLE R © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2019
eturning from holiday and heaving the suitcases through the back door, the tomato plants caught her eye. Bowed under the weight of fruit, coloured through the spectrum of darkest green to rosiest red, they had exceeded all expectations. With only a patio to call a garden, but a surfeit of containers, she’d dedicated the sunniest corner to an assortment of tomato varieties. Like the rats of Hamelin, there were great ones, small ones, lean ones and brawny ones. They’d been eating them all summer - sliced in salads, grilled with bacon, roasted with lamb. They’d been giving them away to friends and family all summer too. She noticed that her obliging neighbour from over the garden fence had kept the plants well watered whilst they’d been away, but hadn’t made much of a dent in the crop, in spite of being told to help herself. The next morning, after a good night’s sleep back in her own bed and nursing a cup of tea that tasted exactly as it should, she surveyed the fruit. So late in the season, the green ones wouldn’t have much of a chance to ripen. The red ones were too numerous to eat raw before rotting; they went off a lot quicker than shop bought. A freezer already stocked with home-made passata meant that she had only a couple of options left.
Torn between ketchup and chutney, she chose chutney. Vague memories of her mother making a gallon of tomato ketchup some decades previously, coloured her decision. The resulting somewhat watery sauce had been ‘interesting’ in flavour but nothing like the stuff that, in those days, came in glass bottles that needed a good thump on the bottom to get it moving. Mum’s ketchup collection had hovered in the store cupboard for years, gradually making its way towards the dark at the back of the inaccessible top shelf, before mysteriously disappearing altogether at the turn of the century. Telling herself she didn’t need to venture to the shops for ingredients, she retrieved some apples from the freebie fallers’ basket across the road and substituted dates for sultanas. Sugar, garlic and onions were always about. Mustard seed she had – because of the saag aloo that was a bit of a family favourite; cloves were waiting for bread sauce. Surprisingly, powdered ginger was in the cupboard too because… she couldn’t remember why. Ad lib-ing with one or two other ignored spices, she included a bag of chilli flakes too as an afterthought. Now, vinegar.. Recollecting seeing a big jar of it somewhere strange, she eventually located some malt pickling vinegar under the sink with the cleaning products. Raiding the glass recycling basket by the back door, she put a motley assortment of jars in
WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM the dishwasher. She was good to go!
The resulting concoction smelled quite nice. Her husband said so too, so it wasn’t her imagination. Although it had taken a lot longer to reduce than she’d thought it would, the consistency looked right as she ladled the brownish sludge into the jars, feeling very seasonal and a little bit domestic goddess-y. Rounding off the whole exercise with attractive labels that she’d designed and printed herself and colourful fabric lid covers, she arranged the chutneys on a shelf and planned to give some away as Christmas gifts. A few weeks later, her husband was having some cheese and biscuits and expressing a wish to try her chutney. Choosing a rather attractive hexagonal jar from her hoard, she handed it to him with a smile on her face and a small glow of pride in her heart. “Nnngghh.” A strangled noise escaped him as he chewed, his eyes bulging a little. Swallowing and taking a large gulp of beer to follow it down, he caught his breath and announced that it was ‘interesting’ (uh-oh) and possibly needed to ‘mature’ for a bit longer. “Really?” She hadn’t actually tasted it herself, so she dropped a large blob on a cracker and took a bite. To say it was viciously acerbic with the heat of a thousand dragons, didn’t quite do it justice. She felt her gums shrivel; her tongue tried to crawl away. Valiantly, she swallowed, also washing it down with a swig or three of his beer. “Yes, perhaps a bit longer.” She agreed in a small, slightly squeaky voice, abandoning ideas of gifting it. At least, not to anyone she liked. Breaking out a jar of Branston, her husband sweetly shone a small ray of hope. “I read somewhere that the original Worcestershire sauce tasted so vile that they locked it in a cellar for a few years - and then discovered its aged deliciousness by accident.” He said, encouragingly. But it was with a certain degree of sadness and a belated sympathy with her poor old Mum, that she relegated her chutneys to a little-used top shelf. A dark half-way house to a mysterious disappearance at some unknown future date probably, she thought, as she closed the cupboard door. Never mind, her patio was going to be wall to wall strawberries next summer. Jam had only two ingredients. What could possibly go wrong?

MEON VALLEY GARDEN CLUB RETURNS FOR THE AUTUMN
THE POT MOUNTAIN BEHIND THE SHED Do you have a plastic plant pot mountain to dispose of? Every trip to the garden centre and plant stall seems to result in some plastic plant pots coming home. You might keep a few for reuse, and that often turns into a small pile and then a large pile, hiding behind the greenhouse or shed. Landfill is the easy option to dispose of them. But with a growing concern about plastics in the environment we all need to do our bit to reduce plastic consumption. Most of the plants we buy come in a plastic pot or tray and it’s hard to know how to get rid of them. Reuse is certainly the best option, cleaning and stacking carefully for the following year. But you will probably still end up with more than you can use, and many hard plastic pots are not easily recyclable – in Hampshire anyway. Clayland’s Road recycling site has a sign “no plastic plant pots, put them in the household bin”. This is because most plant pots are made from a range of plastics, and although many types can be recycled in theory, it often needs expensive processes and machinery. Black pots are especially difficult, because the automated recycling technology uses light to sense plastics, and just can’t detect black plastic. Bishop's Waltham Gardening Club has been giving this some thought. It is organising a one-off recycling collection of plastic gardening pots this Autumn for local residents whether they are members of the Club or not. We will arrange for the pots collected to be recycled with Ecogen (www. ecogenrecycling.com) in Alresford who can accept most plastic pots and plant trays for recycling, including difficult ‘black’ plastic pots and trays. Anyone in Bishop's Waltham area who has a pot mountain (or just a few pots) is invited to
bring their unwanted plastic pots and trays to: The Allotment Shed, Albany Road, SO32 1BY on Saturday and Sunday mornings between 10.00am and 12.00 in September and October. We will then arrange for them to be recycled by Ecogen in November.
Local Veterinary Surgeon Gillian Taylor will be wearing her Plantswoman hat when she is the first speaker of the autumn at Meon Valley Garden Club. The talk entitled ‘My French Garden – from Farmers Field to Fruit and Flowers ‘will be at the Meon Hall on Thursday 24th October at 7.30pm. All Welcome. Non-members £2 on the door
Please don't bring other pots or ones that have an incorrect code or no code. Also, do not leave pots outside the Shed when it is shut. This initiative will cost you nothing except a little of your time and thought. HOWEVER, WE DO NEED YOU TO DO A BIT OF THE WORK TOO! 1. Select the pots you no longer want. 2.You now need to sort out the ones suitable for recycling. Here's how: Look at the bottom of them. If they have PP or PS codes (see below) on them Ecogen can take them.
It is the story of a gardening adventure in the Mayenne; a project to convert a field of maize stalks into a productive and attractive garden. Themes covered will include challenges of long-distance plant care and selection, sustainability and the creation of wildlife habitat.
If they have PET(E) on them they will have to go in your household (black) waste bin. The flimsy ones that tear easily can also go to Ecogen. Colours other than black that are not PET(E) can go to Ecogen. If there is no code and they are not black flimsy pots or trays then they will have to go in your household waste (black) bin if they are black but in your recycling (green) bin if they are any other colour. 3. Clean the ones you are bringing to us for recycling with Ecogen
Gillian will also be selling a selection of plants – the proceeds of which will all be donated to the Gardeners Charity – Perennial which helps people working in the Horticultural industry. www.perennial.org.uk

RURAL BUSINESSES IN PARTS OF HAMPSHIRE BENEFIT FROM ALMOST £750,000 OF GRANT FUNDING Small rural businesses across the Winchester, East Hampshire and Eastleigh areas have benefited from almost £750,000 of funding from an EU scheme co-ordinated locally by Winchester City Council. In total, 32 rural businesses and organisations have received the valuable financial support, including the D-Day Memorial Hall in Southwick and Meon Valley Cider in West Meon. LEADER funding exists to support the regeneration of rural communities and individuals with local knowledge are involved in key decisions about how funds are spent. The grants were allocated from EU LEADER funds by the Fieldfare Local Action Group made up of local business owners, community organisers and local residents. Charlotte Johnson, of Meon Valley Cider, said “We are delighted to have received a LEADER grant for our pasteurisation and packaging line. This will enable us to improve profitability substantially and allow us to develop a range of new products with much more flexible operational capabilities. “It will also reduce carbon emissions by allowing us to package our draft products on site, instead of using an outside packager.” Applications for LEADER funding have now closed and businesses to have benefited locally will come together in early 2020 to celebrate the success of the funding scheme. www.winchester.gov.uk

NADIA WATERFIELD FINE ART
A
fter two years painstakingly restoring this beautiful old grain store located outside Stockbridge, Nadia Waterfield Fine Art is now proud to call this wonderful, light-filled and creative space, home. Now, as one of the largest galleries in Hampshire, the new space not only allows Nadia to realise her ambition of bringing together as much talent as possible under one roof with artwork from over 60 artists but also the freedom to exhibit larger and more diverse paintings and sculptures. The Nadia Waterfield Fine Art Autumn Exhibition, which opens on October 10th and runs until the end of October, is, as ever, a rich and stimulating selection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics, carefully curated from artists across the country. However Nadia is particularly excited this year to introduce new work from further afield, featuring artists from Perth, Australia, Andalusia and North Carolina.
and Saturday and by appointment.Visitors can expect an ever-changing portfolio of art work which is constantly updated so there’s always something to intrigue. Nadia’s long-term vision for the gallery is for it to be an artistic hub where lovers of all things art related can congregate and share ideas and expertise. With a series of select and mixed shows during the year, the gallery is not only a shop window for artists both established and new, but also it runs an extensive programme of inspiring lectures and workshops. Top art tutors take workshops for adults teaching a variety of skills, mediums and subjects from expressive drawing to painting in oils. Similarly workshops for children and art scholars are equally diverse ranging from making Easter bonnets to getting an A level portfolio up to scratch. The art lecture schedule runs in conjunction with major art exhibitions taking place in London and leading art lecturers and curators come to talk. Check out The Pre -Raphaelites, Sex and Revolution in Victorian England on October 31st which is guaranteed to keep everyone on the edge of their seats!
The Autumn Exhibition represents work from both well established artists, along with rarer finds from lesser known painters and emerging talent, and boasts an intriguing cross-section of subjects, media and genres, handpicked to appeal to all tastes and budgets. Nadia, an artist herself, is fastidious about keeping her exhibitions, fresh, relevant and exciting and travels the country visiting artists’ studios and building relationships with her artists to ensure a greater understanding of their subject matter and what inspires them. During the show Nadia will be on hand to share her expertise and help clients choose exactly what it is they want – finding that ‘just right’ piece for someone to cherish is a passion of Nadia’s. The ethos behind the Nadia Waterfield Fine Art Gallery is to provide a space which allows paintings and sculptures to be enjoyed in a relaxed yet professional environment. The gallery is beautifully appointed with stylish rugs, lamps, tables, chairs – also for sale - which provide a warm, intimate backdrop to the paintings, sculptures and ceramics. There’s a coffee area to relax in, plenty of parking and lovely dog walks in the stunning environs. The gallery is open throughout the year every Thursday, Friday
The new Nadia Waterfield Fine Art gallery signifies the beginning of an exciting era for this cutting-edge contemporary art gallery and as a result of its success, Nadia is excited to open a sister gallery in Bruton, Dorset. INTRODUCING JOSS KING, LEAD PRACTITIONER OF THE NURSERY AT ST SWITHUN’S PREP SCHOOL
Sonja was born in South Kensington, grew up in Osterley and was evacuated to Cornwall during the war before attending Notting Hill and Ealing High School. She went on to become an occupational therapist, then a teacher in a specialist school, and has three daughters. It wasn’t until after the death of her husband John in 2012, that Sonja revealed a secret she had carried for 74 years - that she was adopted. She asked for the family’s help to find her heritage. Although a huge shock to the family, daughter Joanna took on the task of finding the family’s roots. To everyone’s great surprise, she found Sonja’s Swiss mother, Marthy, alive and well in Las Vegas at the ripe age of 97. Sonja remembers making that first phone call and hearing Marthy’s voice down the phone saying “what took you so long?” An inspiring new author has just published her first children’s book - at the age of 81. Sonja Zulauf has created an enchanting world, located in the nearby garden of her daughter Joanna. Whilst “the insiders” go about their normal, humdrum lives, the story concentrates on the two and four-legged characters who live in and around the house and garden. The book is illustrated by Sonja’s daughter, Joanna. “Much Ado About Something” is an eloquently written mystery, full of charm and humour, concerning environmental issues and is written for children around 8 to 12 years. The book will be launched at the Anvil
VIKING MAGIC, HIDDEN GOLD Archaeologist and broadcaster, MaryAnn Ochota joins forces with Jason Buck, Storyteller to bring history out from where it’s been buried in the ground, back to life and into stories. Mary-Ann and Jason unearth a unique blend of archeology and storytelling, inspired by artefacts discovered across the British Isles, dating from the Iron Age to the Second World War. Thousands of artefacts are discovered in the British Isles every year. Some of them earn their finders enormous sums of money, but most are priceless in
It was through the grief of losing her husband, John, that Sonja found catharsis in writing. In 2017, Sonja moved to Bishop’s Waltham, where she wanted to bring her hand-written manuscript into book form and find an illustrator. Joanna volunteered for the challenge, who, although a creative person, had never illustrated a book. Signing will commence at 10am in the Anvil, Bishop’s Waltham, on the 20th October. The book is also available to purchase from Tashinga, High Street, Bishop's Waltham. a different way, telling the stories of our ancestors’ lives, revealing the secrets and beliefs of the folk who lived here before us. Mary-Ann and Jason reveal the exciting, intriguing, hilarious and sometimes ridiculous stories behind archaeological finds, famous and forgotten. My name is Joss King and I am very privileged to be the new Lead Practitioner in the nursery at St Swithun’s. I have worked with young children throughout my adult life, first as a nanny, then in nurseries and preschools. After completing a foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies I was appointed as co-coordinator at Sparklers Children’s Centre. I later joined Lanterns Children’s Centre where I remained for ten years, wearing several hats, before taking up my new role at St Swithun’s. I love the outdoors, growing vegetables, arts and crafts and singing (even though I am no expert at the latter two!), and I hope to be able to share these passions with the children in the beautiful setting and facilities of St Swithun’s. At St Swithun’s we balance traditional values of respect, manners and caring for others, while encouraging children to question, to think outside the box and develop a real enthusiasm for learning. Our work includes some topical themes and focal starting points but then is very much led by the interests of the children themselves, and having fun is essential! We also maintain an open and trusting relationship in which parents and carers feel part of our school community and can form an easy partnership with us in promoting learning and well-being. Ultimately our aim is to give all of the children in our care the confidence to achieve their potential and to begin their journey towards becoming fearless, confident and articulate individuals who can form happy relationships and make a positive contribution to the world. I am very lucky in that I love what I do. Watching children grow, learn and discover is hugely rewarding. I look forward to continuing to be surprised and awed by the children’s capacity to embrace life and to continuing the successful work of the nursery at St Swithun’s Prep School. www.stswithuns.com

WHAT IF I DON’T MAKE AN LPA? If you don’t make an LPA, and you become ill and unable to deal with your financial affairs, no-one will be able to officially assist you, manage your money and pay your bills. Someone could then apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed your Deputy but it is unlikely you will be able to choose who does this. The process for applying for Deputyship is much more costly and time-consuming than that of making an LPA.

by Jonathon Huet of Walk with Trees, and a bar with local ales. Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, or the 'darker half' of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated from 31 October to 1 November as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. This falls about halfway response, with dogs of all shapes and sizes competing across the handful of interesting and novelty classes. Its popularity means that it’s already in the programme for the 2020 fete! We haven’t had the final figures ratified yet, but it looks like our charity account will be around £7,000 better off as a result of everyone’s generous support. That’s £2,000 better than our previous record. The raffle proved particularly successful with receipts swollen by the extensive prize list with an estimated value in excess of £1,000. Club President Andrew Brown said, “We’ve organised the Swanmore Fete for many years as part of our commitment to community involvement in the Meon Valley, so when villagers respond so generously and support our charitable work, it’s very rewarding.”
In addition to the hundreds of Swanmore residents, the event was also brilliantly supported by dozens of classic car and bike owners who brought along their shiny pieces of pride and joy to put on display. As well as some wonderful music from local bands, including the Soberton Strummers and (making a fine debut) the Swanmore Wind Band, there were displays from regular favourites Roynon School of Dance and Kristian Bediako’s Djembe Drum workshop.
ROARING TRADE AT THE TASTE OF WICKHAM In early September Meon Valley Lions took their BBQ to the Taste of Wickham festival. We had a fantastic day, starting with BBQ bacon butties and then sausages and burgers … the queues didn't stop until mid-afternoon and only then because we sold out. We made approximately £1,400 for local charities, plus this year we collected £120 for the Bahamas, devastated by hurricane Dorian. Our minibus was also in constant use running a shuttle service to the parking fields. Thank you to all who gave so generously and for their continued support.
For the first time, we introduced a dog show to the fete and were overwhelmed with the

Like Beltain, Samhain was seen as liminal time when the boundary between this world and the next could be crossed more easily, and this meant the spirits and fairies could more easily come into our world. These fairies needed to be propitiated to ensure the people and their livestock survived the winter, so offerings of food and drink were left outside for them. The souls of the dead were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality, so feasts were arranged at which the souls of dead kin were beckoned to attend and place set at the table for them. Tickets are priced at £15. From 7:00pm to 10:00pm at Butser Ancient Farm, Hampshire, PO8 0BG More information at tickets are available from www.butserancientfarm.co.uk/samhainfestival-2/

COMMUNITY Test flows for two and a half acres, connecting the two islands and woodland valleys of Longstock and Leckford together. It was created by the Beddington family in the 1930's and further developed by John Spedan Lewis in the 1940’s as a place to reflect and relax, resulting in a true spectacle, hosting an array of plants from around the world. BW Rotary club organised a summer Sunday outing in August.
BISHOP'S WALTHAM ROTARY NEWS - OCTOBER BISHOP’S WALTHAM MEN’S SHED Men’s Sheds are community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun. They are already well established in Australia, with well over 900 in existence. BW Rotary has recently made a donation to the local Men’s Shed: established in the local Cricket Pavilion. For more information, contact: helenhills.bw@ btinternet.com or 01489 893498. MERCY SHIPS INTERNATIONAL SURGICAL CARE MISSION CHARITY Is a charity that works to improve the Health Care systems of many developing countries, by providing direct surgical facilities aboard a hospital ship. It reduces the backlog of surgical patients. It is estimated that more than 17 million people die every year from conditions requiring surgical care. Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland is working to coordinate a $1million contribution to this cause. If you would like to contribute to this cause, please get in touch via the link below. BW Rotary have recently pledged £500 towards this charity. Over 95,000 surgical procedures have been performed and 2.7 million lives impacted. If you would like to find out more about mercy ships, see www.mercyships.org.uk
HART The Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust, and local Trustee and Board member Jo Russell, (pictured), gave a presentation to the club on the subject in July. Their mission is to support people suffering from conflict and persecution in places with no international attention or outside help. One of their slogans is: ‘Without healthcare, people die’: they work with local partners to deliver emergency health care provision in conflict regions, making medicine available for people who would otherwise die from preventable disease and treatable wounds. BW Rotary will be presenting HART with a cheque to support their work. If you would like to find out more about HART, see www.hart-uk.org
Erik Schmidt is cycling the 1,000 miles to return to his home in Linz in Austria. It will take him until 10th October, with some breaks to meet up with Rotaract Clubs and friends along the way. The idea came after working at TFSR at Netley, who help relieve poverty in Africa by working with local organisations to bring about effective and sustainable change.BW Rotary presented Erik with a cheque to support his challenge. As you can see above, your local Rotary Club engages in a wide range of support of local and international causes as well as fellowship.

BISHOP'S WALTHAM BITES!
If you haven’t managed to get to a Bishop’s Waltham Bites event before, then now is your chance! Between 11.00am and 3.00pm on Saturday 5th October, eight participating food outlets in Bishop’s Waltham will be offering tasters from their establishments to the lucky 125 people who have bought tickets in advance. The participating food outlets will be The Southern Co-op, Grover Butchers, Giorgios Mediterranean Restaurant, Any Fish, The Barleycorn Inn, The Crown Inn, The Bishop’s Waltham Country Market and Stainers Bakery. This is a hugely popular town event which sells out very quickly. On the day, the High Street and surrounding areas will be buzzing with people enjoying their tasting delights. The outlets put on a fantastic feast of flavours and everyone gets into the spirit of the event. Regulars, newcomers and visitors from afar all say what a wonderful experience it has been. Bishop’s Waltham Bites is organized by the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team. It is supported by the Southern Co-op which generously pays for the cost of printing the programme and publicity materials. The tasters are provided at no cost by the participating outlets so all the proceeds raised through ticket sales can be directed to local community activities. This October some of the proceeds will be donated to the Bishop’s Waltham Youth Club, with the rest of it being put towards the costs of the Town Team putting on a second version of the highly successful 2018 KidSTreat event next year. Tickets, which are £8.00 each, can be bought from Sweet Corner in Bishop’s Waltham High Street and Any Fish, Merlin Mews, Houchin Street, Bishop’s Waltham. For further information contact bishopswalthamtownteam2@gmail.com.

DOUG JONES (SDNP) & GEMMA LACEY (SOUTHERN CO-OP) IN THE SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK
NEW ‘FOREVER FUND’ IS LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY PROJECTS IN SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK More good causes and community projects will be helped in the future as a new ‘forever fund’ has been created for the South Downs National Park. The new dedicated community fund will build up over time and is being launched by the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity of the National Park, in partnership with the South Downs National Park Authority. To kickstart the endowment, Southern Co-op has donated £10,000, together with £100,000 from the Trust and £100,000 of matchfunding from the South Downs National Park Authority. With a clutch of other donors, the community fund is starting out at £290,000 and is expected to grow into the millions over the next decade, allowing more projects to benefit from grant funding.

Endowments are a simple but effective way for charities and not-forprofit organisations to ensure steady, long-term funding. They are a charitable investment account in which the contributions are invested to generate interest income, and only the interest income is spent. The Trust’s endowment will provide a permanent funding stream for the National Park’s Sustainable Communities Fund (SCF). The initiative has been running for several years and helped a range of projects, including Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, Petworth Community Garden in West Sussex and arts charity Patina Lewes in East Sussex. Funding from the SCF helped to replace an unsafe bridge at Botany Bay, a chalk valley near Duncton, West Sussex, and build a new outdoor learning shelter to help open the site up to local primary schools. Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire received SCF grant funding to help transform its Roman Villa, which is based on archaeological excavations of a 4th century Roman home at Sparsholt, near Winchester.Volunteers spent more than 1,000 hours painstakingly recreating a mosaic from Sparsholt using more than 120,000 multicoloured tiles. Grants awarded by the SCF are considered by the SCF Grant panel, which meets two times a year. The next meeting is on September 24 and there is a grant application deadline of August 26. Grants are available for up to 50 per cent of the project cost from £250 to a maximum of £10,000. Any organisation interested should email mark.rose@southdownstrust. org.uk or call 01730 819219 for an initial conversation about the project.
