Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
Ben came and sized up replacement doors and cupboards for our existing kitchen and while there we took the opportunity to enquire about a kitchen bookcase and a new cupboard. Nothing was any problem for Ben to put into the design. The date for the kitchen refit was organised really quickly and was set for a couple of weeks after the quote, both of which were excellent. The end result was a kitchen which has been transformed beyond recognition with major additions of a breakfast bar and extra new and replacement cupboards. We are so impressed with the finish that we have asked Ben to measure up for some bespoke non standard size bedroom cabinets that we would like them to build. In summary quality work carried out by highly skilled tradesmen. Pity there are only five stars.

Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

ENTERTAINMENT “In a ghastly, grim, crime-ridden suburb, I was stabbed twice in the leg by a mugger demanding my camera. The weird thing is that the stabs felt like punches, which is probably why I fought back. I pulled him to the ground, where he started kicking me in the back, which was the moment I looked down to see my leg was awash with blood. No, those punches most definitely weren’t punches. I let go of my camera, and my attacker got to his feet and loomed over me. I wasn’t getting up.To make doubly sure, he unleashed a volley of kicks to my chest and stomach before legging it through the rubble and undergrowth.” “Thank goodness, a passing pizza delivery driver stopped within a couple of minutes. There was an awful lot of blood. He bundled me into his car just as I was thinking that my number was probably up. I suffered two deep stab wounds, 15 stitches, three broken ribs, battered liver and stomach, bruised all over. But unsurprisingly, the mental scars were tougher than the physical ones.
BISHOP'S WALTHAM AUTHOR LAUNCHES BOOK THAT CELEBRATES THE MASSIVE MENTAL HEALTH BEENFITS OF RUNNING A Bishops Waltham marathon runner is beating back the demons with a new book which celebrates the massive mental health benefits of running. Phil Hewitt has been a familiar figure for years as he runs along the paths and country lanes of the Meon Valley, especially loving to run along the former railway line between West Meon and Wickham. But in the past three years, there has been something distinctly therapeutic about the hundreds of miles he has piled up, as Phil explains in his new book Outrunning The Demons (Bloomsbury Sport, 2019). “Whenever I see a runner, I always wonder to myself why they are running. In the past few years, I have discovered exactly why I run.” In February 2016, Phil, a journalist by profession, was knifed and left for dead in a brutal street robbery in a grim, desolate Cape Town suburb. Deeply traumatised by the attack, he found that running – once he could walk again – was a rich source of healing, a chance to find time, space, perspective and recovery. As Phil says: “Running can take us to fantastic places. Just as importantly, it can also bring us back from terrible ones. For people in times of crisis, trauma and physical or mental illness – when normality collapses – running can put things back together again.” Phil continues: “I was walking back from watching England lose a one-day international against South Africa at the gorgeous Newlands cricket ground in Cape Town. And I was stupid. I made bad decision after bad decision. I carried on walking when I should have walked back, and I walked straight into danger – danger quickly realised.”
“Within a couple of weeks, out and about for the first time, I had a horrid panic attack in a busy shopping precinct. I don’t think anyone noticed, but for five minutes, if anyone had touched me, spoken to me, even come near me, I would have dissolved into tears. I just wanted the ground to open up beneath me. So what did I do? The next day I did what I have always done. I ran. And it hurt like hell. Broken ribs. Flesh barely healed. But something lifted. I have still got PTSD and frankly can’t see it shifting any time soon, but running gave me strength. It makes me me again, and it was running that started to put me back together again – a story I wanted to tell.” “The book starts with my first marathon after the stabbing, my 31st marathon in all. It finishes with that marathon’s finishing line, a moment when the emotion was simply overwhelming. In between are 34 interviews with people from the UK, the US and Australia who have been to hell and have found that the surest, quickest, safest way back is to run. These are people who have lost lovedones to murder, have been caught up in terrorism, have suffered depression, addiction, alcoholism or bereavement, have been viciously attacked, have braved horrid illness, have suffered the horrors of war or been on the wrong end of outrageous misfortune.” “But the thing that links them all (apart from speaking to me) is that they have found space and time and connection through running. Running has helped them grieve; it has helped them heal; it has given them freedom; it has renewed and nurtured them; it has helped them move on, reemerge, reclaim their lives and become stronger people.
TITCHFIELD FESTIVAL THEATRE APPOINTS EXPERIENCED NEW TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Titchfield Festival Theatre is proud to announce the appointment of a new full-time Technical Director, Scott Myers, who joins with immediate effect. Scott has a wealth of experience in the theatre technical field. Scott hails from Los Angeles where he worked in various theatres and broadcasting companies. He came to the UK in the late 1980’s to join The National Theatre where he worked as Assistant Head of Sound before joining the RSC as Head of Sound. Scott gained considerable lighting experience as Head of Technicians at The Royal Opera House in Oman. His extensive career has also seen him work as Technical Manager and Director at The Junction Theatre Cambridge and the Kings Place Music Foundation. At both of these venues he was instrumental in the build and installation of the technical aspects of the venues. Scott is tasked with recruiting a full time technical team. He has considerable experience in developing and training technicians; once in place the technical team will cover all TFT shows and will be responsible for developing and training a volunteer cadre of technicians. This will ensure that not only does the Theatre have a design and technical element for every show but that the volunteer technicians have ample backup to run shows. Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director at Titchfield Festival Theatre said, “We are truly delighted to have Scott Myers on board at Titchfield. His experience in working with some of the best talents in the world is incredible and as our very first full-time Technical Director his knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm will be of immeasurable benefit.”
“I hope this book is rousing. I hope it is inspiring. I hope it is uplifting. It deals with tough things, but it is not a tough read. It is a book about hope and survival.”
Scott Myers said, “I am thrilled to be joining the team here at Titchfield. This theatre is a real asset to the local community and it is a great time to get involved. I have worked in the theatre world for more than 50 years and I am keen to pass on my knowledge to the younger generations, sharing my experience and know-how backstage. My very first role was working in community theatre: and it is fantastic to return to my roots.”

AUSTRALIA, BEYOND SYDNEY A ustralia is so vast, unless you have unlimited time it is almost impossible to see everything in one visit. Therefore it is important to prioritise what you are looking for from your holiday, whilst Sydney and The Great Barrier Reef are high on most people’s list of must visit destinations, yet Australia has so much more to offer and if good food and wine are high up that list then South Australia should be on it.
Adelaide is approximately 2 hours flying time from Sydney or an amazing 4-day drive along the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. This is a city that never seems to fail in surprising our clients with its elegance and culture, easy to get around with minimal traffic and a centre that is only a mile square. Adelaide is known for its festivals, alfresco dinning and Mediterranean climate, a charming city that is full of life. With its rugged coastline to the south and the Barossa Valley to the north it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and it is the Barossa Valley that attracts so many people to discover the secrets of South Australia. Australia’s leading wine region with such famous names as Penfolds, Jacobs Creek and Wolfblass are all based in the Barossa, there is ample opportunity to take in wine tasting as well as wine making displays and informal dinning. In fact food is central to this winemaking region and any diets should definitely be put on hold until your return home. With its diverse European culture, it has taken the best of each and brought them together, so from French cheese to German bread and meat or Mediterranean olives and fresh fruit, you will find it all here, put together in Australia’s own unique style.
FEATURE PERTH, THE GATEWAY TO AUSTRALIA Perth and South West Australia is another area that is easily overlooked but has so much to offer and also boasts the shortest travelling time from the UK with Qantas now running a direct flight from Heathrow to Perth, reducing the travelling time down to 18 hours. Perth is a great place to start your holiday at with Kings Park and the Swan River 2 of its major attractions. Kings Park is actually larger than New York’s Central Park and has many great walks to enjoy along with its Botanical Gardens, whilst The Swan River offers a great way to see the city skyline and learn a little bit of its history at the same time, and what’s better than a twilight cruise watching the sun go down. A short drive or ferry ride from Perth you will find the city of Fremantle, from here you can take a ferry to Rottnest Island to meet the famous Quokkas or just enjoy Fremantle’s Café Culture, visit the local brewery, Little Creatures and take a tour of Fremantle Prison which has a wealth of fascinating history. Just over 2 hours south of Fremantle you will find yourself at the Margaret River, famous for its wineries and can claim to have some of the best wine Australia has to offer, with over 160 wineries in the region, taking a wine tour is a must whilst also finding time to visit one of the regions lighthouses and many impressive and colourful caves. Before moving on you should visit the Underwater Observatory at the end of Busselton Jetty, which is also happens to be the Southern Hemispheres longest jetty at 1.8KM. If you have time you should continue south to Walpole, here the striking coastline of the Southern Forests stretches across 140 kilometres, where beautiful Karri forests sit atop rocky cliffs, and beautiful white sandy beaches are pounded by the wild Southern Ocean. You can visit the Valley of the Giants and take a treetop walk whilst the Walpole Wilderness cruise is a half day cruise like no other. Australia has so much to offer we could go on forever, so why not call Amity Travel today to discuss your holiday ideas, where you will be safe in the knowledge that you are speaking to the Travel experts.

EAST MEON GARDENING CLUB TALK: CHRIS BIRD The Garden Club was delighted to welcome back Chris Bird from Sparsholt College. Chris is a Lecturer in Horticulture and has always been interested in plants and their arrangement and works closely with outside organisations such as Plant Heritage, the RHS and the National Trust to promote their use. His talk for us was on: Right plant, right place Chris has been involved in the re-labelling of plants particularly in relation to the description. Previously, the Height and Spread of any given plant, shrub or tree has been given after 10 years, but this has now been reduced to 5 years. It was interesting to learn for example, that Acers are described as preferring acidic soil but it was suggested that they can thrive in other soils and it is more about providing correct moisture, drainage, mulching etc. Chris made the audience laugh when he said that...plants have never read the books.." and that.. ’a plant is not happy unless you have moved it three times...' a quote attributable to Gertrude Jekyll.
THE CURTIS MUSEUM & ALLEN GALLERY
Apparently green and white gardens are very 'in vogue' at the moment but quite a few of these plants can be found in other colours, for example Taxus Baccata the female species has pink berries. The Clianthus Puniceus Alba also produces a plant which boasts pendulous clusters of large, claw-like bright red flowers in May and June. It will make a surprisingly tough addition to a sheltered wall but is an absolutely stunning conservatory plant when it will bloom during the winter. If you have the space, tree ferns are popular for shaded areas but these still require 4 hours of sunshine. To tidy up the bottom of hedges, Chris recommended Lamian which is commonly known as 'Deadnettle' and comes with both white and pink flowers with variegated leaves. Prefers light shade but will tolerate dark shade. If planted in the sun, the leaves become brown and scorched. Hostas are also good for the bottom of hedges. Anthriscus Sylvestris - known as Cow Parsley is good for Cottage Gardens and will grow in semi shade. It will get mildew if allowed to get
shopped at drapers and ironmongers and bought wine from the Swan. Thursday January 23rd, 7.30. Tickets £5 per person from the Allen Gallery. Curtis Museum The Museum will be open during the Town’s Yuletide Festival on Sunday December 1st. You can visit the shop for stocking fillers and books on local history, or take a break from shopping and browse among the Museum’s exhibits – Stone Age man to Jane Austen and beyond.
Allen Gallery There are no talks in December. Gilbert White and Alton - In this anniversary year of his birth, (1720), local historian Jane Hurst talks about Gilbert’s Alton. Although he lived in Selborne, he had many connections in the town - a sister-in-law and two nieces lived here, he
Book Number 23 in the series Alton Papers is now available at the Museum. Articles include two on the history of Westbrooke House, both as a private estate in the mid1200s, and later as a lunatic asylum. Paul Fenwick has contributed a piece on the 1881 Census, with particular emphasis on where Alton people were born and on their lines of work. David Lacey has written about John Lightfoot, vicar of Shalden from 176577, a noted botanist and Fellow of the Royal
The resilience of nature was brought sharply into focus when Chris spoke about The Ginkgo Biloba Tree (Maidenhair) which is a slow growing ancient tree from China dating back at least 200 million years. Mature male trees have thick yellow catkins in late Spring. Maidenhair Trees were introduced to Japan about 1,000 years ago and are often grown near Temples. The first Maidenhair Tree was brought to Britain and planted in Kew Gardens in 1760 where it still stands today. The remarkable aspect of this tree is that 6 survived the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and were at the epicentre of the blasts. If you are interested in helping moths perhaps you would like to grow Lysimachia Clethroides which likes semi-shade or if it is scent you want in your conservatory try growing Zaluzlanskya Ovata which comes from Mexico and is perfumed. If it is bees you want to attract then grow Cleome which are commonly known as 'Spider Flowers'. This plant is usually an annual but re-seeds prolifically and will return year after year. Flowers can be white, pink or purple. The talk was extremely well received - such knowledge delivered with a wicked sense humour was much appreciated. We look forward to welcoming Chris back at some time in the future. Written by Pamela Peacock East Meon Garden Club
Society, The late Violet Hunt provided details of the eight Chawton men listed on the war memorial, together with descriptions of village life during WW2. Finally Jane Hurst writes about the founding of the Jane Austen Society in the early 1940s, leading, in 1949, to Jane Austen’s Cottage in Chawton being opened to the public – by the then Duke of Wellington. Flick was selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for the Meon Valley constituency on Monday 11th November. Following the selection, Flick said 'I was really honoured and thrilled to have been selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for the Meon Valley Constituency on Monday. My parents moved to Meonstoke just over 33 years ago, so it is so exciting to represent the area and people that you know well and love and call home. I am looking forward to working with all the local councillors and residents to build on the great work that Sir George Hollingbery has done over the last 9 years. As a former MP in Portsmouth South, I have the experience and knowledge to work immediately if I am elected, representing residents in Westminster and getting Brexit done so we can focus on the other polices that matter to us'. www.flickdrummond.com

TACKLING CLIMATE EMERGENCY AT HEART OF COUNCIL’S DRAFT FIVE YEAR PLAN
A MONTH IN THE LIFE OF MEON VALLEY HEARTSTART Well October was quite some month! In four short weeks Meon Valley Heartstart provided 18 training sessions, transferring emergency lifesaving skills to around 1000 people. From Reading in the West, Farnham in the North, Southampton in the South and Waterlooville and Gosport in the East, volunteer trainers and helpers travelled across the Meon Valley region and beyond to spread the word and give people hands-on training in emergency life saving skills.
position. • Teaching all of Brookfield Community School’s Year 10 & 11 students how to deal with an unconscious person, what to do if someone is choking, how to administer CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when a person has suddenly stopped breathing. • Training members of the public, businesses, schools and colleges how to use the AED’s that are increasingly appearing in towns, villages and work places.
Training was provided in infant and junior schools, secondary schools, to community groups, business park managers, a golf club and to members of the public. Ages of those trained ranged from four to 90 plus. And all was provided for free and by volunteers. “Between the 6 trainers and 3 helpers that were available this month, we estimate that we have clocked up over than 200 hours in training time, travel time and preparation” said Scheme Coordinator David Williamson. “That is the equivalent of a full time person putting in a 50 hour week for 4 full weeks – it is a huge contribution to the wellbeing of our region from a small dedicated group of people – and all at no cost to the taxpayer or the recipient.” Highlights of the month included: • Restart a Heart Day – a British Heart Foundation sponsored day where we provided CPR training at Westquay Shopping Centre in Southampton – we estimated over 40 people tried their hand at CPR and many others expressed interest in attending one of our public training sessions in the future. • Training children at Bishop’s Waltham Infant School who then taught their parents how to put someone in the recovery
One of the volunteer trainers, retired GP Steve Smallwood, tells of his enthusiasm for the scheme. “It is wonderful to see people grow in confidence during the session and to watch them leave with a the sense that they would know what to do if they come across someone who needs life saving help. We cannot quantify how many lives have actually been saved as a result, but we frequently receive anecdotal evidence of the skills learned in our sessions being put to good practical use. It is very rewarding as a volunteer to help with such an important activity.”
Tackling the climate emergency and providing excellent services are at the core of Winchester City Council’s draft five year plan for 2020 to 2025. The draft plan sets out Winchester City Council’s key ambitions and focuses on five priority outcomes which are: Tackling the climate emergency and creating a greener district • Homes for all • Vibrant local economy • Living well • Your services, your voice Over the next month the council is inviting residents, stakeholders and businesses to have their say about what matters to them. The draft plan recognises that the council will face some very significant challenges over the next five years including tackling the district’s carbon footprint, ensuring that resources are available to support an ageing population, responding to the potential impacts of Brexit on the economy along with maintaining high quality services, while balancing a council budget which will be reducing as Central Government grants diminish. The draft plan places the climate emergency as the overarching priority, focussing on the council becoming carbon neutral by 2024 and the wider district carbon neutral by 2030, along with reducing levels of waste and increasing recycling rates. It also puts health and wellbeing high on the agenda and aims to address health inequalities and improve participation rates for physical and cultural activities, underpinned by the opening of Winchester’s new Sport and Leisure Park in 2021.
Last year Meon Valley Heartstart trained over 4,500 people in total and is on course to train a similar number this year. Our vision is that everyone in our area should know how to save a life.
The proposed new plan also focuses on ensuring the Winchester district economy remains vibrant by finding increased opportunities for high quality, well paid employment across the district. The need to attract younger people to live and work in the district and to improve energy efficiency in homes as well as address homelessness is also highlighted.
For more information about attending one of our training sessions, volunteering with us or supporting us, visit our website at www.heartstartmeonvalley.co.uk.
The plan goes on to set out ways in which the authority will be open and transparent, with better services for residents that are more accessible and usable.

FULLY PARTICIPATE & ENJOY ALL THE FESTIVE SEASON HAS TO OFFER THIS YEAR What would YOU miss most during the Holiday Season if a Hearing Loss Developed?
A Survey by Action on Hearing Loss identified some unsurprising but impactful results. People imagined missing out on a number of key elements of the festive season that other take for granted such as; • The sound of Christmas Carols • The Classic Christmas Songs on the radio • The Soundtrack to much loved festive Films
But what they thought they would miss the most was not being able to fully participate in conversations with family and friends As Christmas is the season of goodwill and merriment, all should be allowed to partake equally in the festive fun so Sam Longman resident Audiologist at the Alresford Hearing Studio has compiled these top tips for those with hearing loss, to help make the most of the time spent with loved ones this festive season
Some Top Tips for the Party Season
• Check that your hearing equipment is still right for you.Visit a skilled and experienced audiologist before the festive season for a free, comprehensive consultation .They can optimize your current hearing aids to suit noisy environments such as parties or restaurants and can recommend the equipment that handle these environments best • Check whether your hearing aids have directional microphones (two microphones instead of one), that are designed to reduce sounds from the side and the rear and focus on sounds in front of you. They will focus your hearing aids wherever your nose is pointing. So if you are facing into a noisy restaurant, the directional microphones will be focusing on the greatest amount of background noise. That is not good, when your hearing aids have directional microphones, the best spot to sit in is the one that will put room noise behind you. If you don’t have directional microphones, it may be time to consider an upgrade • Once you are confident in your equipment make sure you use it often, this allows your brain to adjust to different sounds over time o Using it only when you are faced with noisy situations tends to overwhelm the brain so you need to ‘train’ it to deal
with these situations. As you use them more your brain will start to distinguish between important and non-important sounds and adapts to the environment and makes it easier for you to follow the conversation. So start wearing your hearing aids every day in the weeks leading up to the Big Day!
When Out Socialising o o o o o o
If you have a choice between a long table or a booth, choose a booth this will allow you to be closer to the speaker at all times Don’t sit near the kitchen, at the bar or near the entrance to the restaurant. The ambient noise from these locations may be distracting If you are dining with a larger group, avoid sitting at the ends of the table. It is very difficult to hear from one end to the other so try to sit in the middle. Be realistic even people without hearing loss may struggle at this time of year Look above you - are you sitting directly under the air conditioning, fan or music speaker? sometimes the restaurant will agree to turn down the volume of the music if you explain that it is too loud for you to communicate with your dinner guests Look at the person who is talking. When you are in a challenging environment such as a restaurant, you are going to need to use some visual cues Enjoy yourself but don’t drink too much - drinking alcohol increases blood flow to the inner ear, which can cause tinnitus – a ringing, buzzing or swooshing sound in the ears. This condition should resolve itself in a few hours, but can still really compromise enjoyment
• The Alresford Hearing Studio can also service and fine tune all makes and models of hearing equipment. They are able to provide the optimum solution for you to enjoy the festive season. They can also check for wax build up in the Ear Canal and if necessary remove it using state of the art micro suction techniques. GIVE THE GIFT OF LISTENING THIS CHRISTMAS!
A FAMILY IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS As the festive season is upon us and the annual pilgrimage to Great Aunty Sally’s is planned, what are you going to do when you get there? The usual gift giving, catching up on the year, the ‘did you hear about’ conversations or the dreaded Monopoly! What about if great Aunt Sally seems different, distant or forgetful would you notice? When you haven’t seen people for a period of time it is easier to spot if there are subtle or very obvious changes in their behaviour, mood or manners. You are also in a key position to be able to chat to them about what has been going on in their lives, how they feel and what’s changed. Sometimes not being present everyday can give a person the opportunity to talk and really open up.
Whether through family difficulties, money problems or feeling lonely, Christmas can be a difficult time. And with all the pressure to enjoy the festivities, it can be hard to ask for help. Samaritans aim to support those struggling to cope during the festive period – you can too. Winchester Samaritans operates from an office in Upper High Street where over 90 volunteers listen to callers when they are finding life difficult. They listen on the telephone, via email and SMS and receive face-to-face visitors 365 days each year.
This Christmas there are a few things you can do when you go and visit family and friends. • Really look and listen to what they are saying, if it seems different or strange or disjointed do you need to be concerned? • Get people to open up and be a person to talk to.Your yearly visit is a great opportunity to let someone offload. • Arrange a visit sooner than one of the ‘occasions’. If you are concerned you could help to monitor the situation from a distance, weekly phone calls or a monthly trip if it’s feasible could really help. • Just be available. If someone wants to chat or they are struggling or they seem different in their ways, you just being there could be the key to starting to get the help they may need. And remember: a family is for life, not just for christmas!
Anne-Marie Drummond Winchester Branch Director explains, "Every month we answer over 1500 calls, 300 emails and 500 texts. Some who contact us are desperately lonely. Others need to talk through personal or work problems and some call because they are feeling suicidal” Over 5000 people took their own life in England in 2018, an increase of 12% on 2017. It is Samaritans’ aim to reduce this number by helping people to cope with their suicidal feelings before they get to that desperate stage. They respond to a call on average every 6 seconds. In the build up to Christmas peoples’ problems or feelings of depression and isolation can become overwhelming. Anne Marie says “We don't judge or give advice, we just try to listen and help callers to explore feelings that they cannot share with anyone else. Just giving someone that few minutes of our time to show that we care can make all the difference in their lives” You can help too. If you know someone who may be going through a hard time get in touch, or better still, go and see them and ask them how they are feeling. Just sparing some of your time will be the most valuable gift that you will give this Christmas. If you would like to find out more about volunteering at Winchester Samaritans, the branch runs regular information sessions at their offices, details can be found at www.winchestersamaritans.org.uk If you need confidential support yourself, call Samaritans free on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org.

PROFESSIONAL This is only carried out for the lenders own purposes to ensure that the property provides satisfactory security for the loan, it doesn’t offer you the same protection that an independently commissioned survey would provide if later defects arose.
MICHELLE HUGHES, CONVEYANCER, ANSWERS QUESTIONS ON BUYING YOUR FIRST PROPERTY. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FROM START TO FINISH WHEN BUYING MY FIRST PROPERTY? Every transaction can vary, from the sellers’ current position, to you having secured a mortgage. If the property is empty and your mortgage is in place and the information provided by the sellers is limited and there are no issues which we feel could cause you potential problems in the future, then exchange and completion could happen in as little as 6 weeks.
that searches need to be carried out especially if you are getting a mortgage. DO WE NEED TO HAVE A SURVEY CARRIED OUT? First, you need to ask the question would you buy a car without test driving it and I am sure the answer would be no. We would advise you to have a building survey carried out on the property you are proposing to buy as soon as possible especially before exchanging contracts. By having the survey carried out you are making sure that there are no physical defects in the property. Some defects, such as woodworm or damp, can be difficult for a layperson to diagnose and getting a survey could protect your investment.
The most popular survey is the Homebuyers Report, which is carried out by a qualified RICS surveyor. This is between a valuation and a full structural survey. It takes between two to four hours to complete and is most suitable for modern properties and older properties which are in good condition. This survey provides information such as advice on repairs, and any problems which could affect the property’s value. If you are looking to buy a very old or converted property, or a property which has been converted with unusual materials then it maybe you need a full structural survey, which is more expensive and takes a little longer to complete. If any legal issues arise from the survey, you should notify your solicitor so they can raise the appropriate questions with the sellers’ solicitors.
If the seller is still in the property, there is an onward chain and you still need to arrange a mortgage then this could take between 8 to 12 weeks, you also need to take into account
There are several different types of survey. If you were taking out a mortgage for the purchase the lender will carry out a valuation, but this is limited in what it covers.

THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE WAS 20 YEARS AGO A proverb says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now”. Trees take decades to reach maturity and provide their greatest visual and ecological benefits. They are a gift to future generations. Always check that your tree is UK grown. Importing stock risks introducing pests and diseases such as Oak Processionary Moth. When selecting a site for planting, visualise how large the tree might become. Could it block a view, cast shade onto a patio or swamp a building at maturity? Inappropriate siting results in unnecessary pruning or felling. The best months to plant are November or December. Avoid planting during sub-zero temperatures; this can damage sensitive roots, and the ground is too hard to dig! To plant your tree, dig a square-shaped hole to the depth of the rootball and between 1.5 - 2 times wider. Don’t break up the bottom of the hole as was once standard practice. Separate topsoil from subsoil. Don’t worry about adding organic matter, fertiliser or mycorrhizal dips. These are usually unnecessary. Tall, top-heavy trees with no lower branches, trees in exposed locations or near heavy traffic may need staking. Drive two stakes 30cm into the pit at the width of the rootball, in line with the prevailing wind. Position these before planting to avoid root damage. Lower the tree into the pit, ensuring the root flare is at ground level.
Burying the root flare causes roots to grow upwards potentially causing a structural defect. Backfill with subsoil then topsoil. Squash this down so that it feels firm but not compacted. Fix the stem to the stakes with Hessian, but not so tight that it prevents natural movement. The aim is to stimulate stem thickening and support root development. You’ll need to water it immediately. For trees other than whips, completely soak the rootball with approximately 20L. Spread a 10cm deep circle of composted hardwood woodchip to 1m around the stem, leaving a mulch-free donut around the base. This reduces evaporation from the soil, moderates soil temperature and inhibits weeds. Water weekly while the tree is growing (March-early September) for at least 2 years while the root system establishes; water frequently during hot, dry periods, don’t wait for leaves to wilt. Rainfall doesn’t often percolate deeper than a few centimetres, so you’ll need to keep watering unless its particularly persistent or heavy. Keep the mulch topped up to maximise water economy. After two years, remove the stakes as the tree should have developed a healthy root system. It may be necessary now to carry out formative pruning to improve structure and form.Your tree surgeon will be able to advise you on this. MEON VALLEY LIONS CLUB NEWSLETTER
WINCHESTER LANTERN PARADE
Christmas is coming and Santa has a shiny new Sleigh Unbelievably, we already find ourselves on the downhill run to Christmas! The Meon Valley Lions Club is well advanced with planning Santa’s tour of the Meon Valley villages. The Lions have been extra busy this year, along with Santa’s helpers, building him a shiny new sleigh ready for this year’s fun! Its going to be a big surprise, so see if you can spot the difference when he comes to visit you.
The lantern parade is back for 2019, but bigger and better than ever! Make your own lantern with Bella Crafts, see the displays in the Cathedral, and join a fun family parade starting from the Cathedral and finishing with a stunning fireworks display. The parade is a great event for all the family whether you participate or come just to enjoy the colourful spectacle, lap up the atmosphere and admire the skilfully made weird and wonderful lanterns. Anyone can get involved in the Lantern Parade by creating a lantern. Lantern workshops will be held at Bella Crafts, Fair Oak, on the following dates:
Santa and the Lions will be out and about throughout the month of December, with visits to all the villages from East and West Meon at the top of the valley, to Wickham, Boarhunt and Knowle at the bottom. He’ll also be on duty on the Saturday mornings running up to Christmas at Wickham Square, Bishops Waltham High Street and Swanmore Village Store.
Sunday 10 November 9.30am - 12.30pm or 1.00pm - 4.00pm Saturday 16 November 2.30pm - 5.30pm Sunday 24 November 9.30am - 12.30pm or 1.00pm - 4.00pm Also after school from 11 November onwards from 3.30pm 5.30pm.
It takes a lot of time and effort helping Santa over the three-and-a-halfweek period and we are always grateful for extra Santa Helpers, so if you are able-bodied and fancy helping us out as a volunteer, we’d be grateful to hear from you. The full Santa sleigh schedule will be published on the special Santa page on this website: www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk/santa We raised over £4,500 last year so let’s see if we can raise more this year! Lions Swanmore Fete 2020 While we are in forward-mode, dreaming of Santa and wishing away 2019, spare a thought for the organising committee who are already working on plans for the Lions’ Swanmore Fete 2020. We want to make it as big and fun as previous years and following the huge success of the Dog Show last year, we will be running this again next year. Check out the programme which will be published through our news updates and on our website. Put the date in your diary NOW … Saturday July 11th 2020.
Participants in the Lantern Parade should arrive at Winchester Cathedral between 5.30pm and 6.00pm. enjoy festive Christmas Carols for all the family in the Nave, before the Lantern Parade begins at 6.30pm. Helping locals The Club Members have been extra busy this month, not only fund raising but the green fingered amongst us got together to give some much needed gardening help at the Rainbow Centre; we also turned out to help marshal the Portsmouth Memory Walk run by the Alzheimer’s Society and the Solent Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride to raise funds for prostate cancer. The money we raise goes to help local people and clubs and in recent months we have given much needed financial help for several clubs in the Bishops Waltham area; we have been pleased to offer support for the Monday Lunch Club, Wednesday Lunch Club, Brendon Care Tuesday Club and the new Men's Shed Project. All are clubs that offer important companionship and activities for the elderly, reducing isolation and loneliness. All are well worth attending if you live in that area. Join in the fun Its not all about fund raising! We have a monthly pub night and at least one social event each month. We went to the Swanmore C of E Primary School firework display and then got together for a hearty supper to warm us up. We are always for looking for new members so if any or all the above appeals to you please get in contact via our website: www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk/_contact

THE HOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2019 “I’ve been looking forward to this.” A hiss escaped the bottle of beer when he popped the top. As she dished up the takeaway, he passed her the amber fizz. They chinked glasses. “Happy Christmas, darling.” The kids were off in foreign climes and, for the first Christmas since becoming parents, it was just the two of them. Curry for dinner on Christmas Eve, extravagant lobster and chips planned for the next day, Boxing Day lunch booked at the village pub. No epic exercise in decorating either. Boxes of baubles, the accumulation of years generations even, languished in the loft. They were calling their Yuletide ‘Alternative’. Settling on the sofa, tray on lap, she reached for the festive edition of the Radio Times they bought every year. Except this one.. Seizing the remote, he pressed a button. “Agatha Christie all-star special on in half an hour.” “I can’t shake off a vague feeling of guilt.” She said, spooning aubergine pickle onto her plate. “I’m usually knee deep in sprouts about now, feverishly wrapping pigs in blankets, with a hand up the turkey - groping for giblets.” He laughed “And I’d be topping up Auntie Phoebe’s sherry glass and bringing Uncle Norman more nuts. She’d be hogging the TV, in between herding us all off to church - morning, noon and midnight mass. He’d be droning on about birdies and eagles – the girls thought he was a super-boring bird watcher. I wouldn’t have minded, but they weren’t even rellies, just neighbours of your Mum’s!” “We sort of inherited them.” She smiled fondly at the memory of that first Christmas Eve after her mother’s death. The kids had sprinted, wide-eyed and excited into the kitchen to break the news. “Mummymummy, Feeble and Normal are here. They’ve got a suitcase..!” When they passed away, Auntie P and Uncle N were sincerely missed. They’d become another Christmas ingredient – like the Queen’s speech – and it wasn’t quite the same without them. Over the years though, other waifs and strays came and went. Their daughters acquired boyfriends. Plus a boyfriends’ sister, who brought their newly divorced mother along. The following year the divorcee mother rocked up with her boyfriend. Somehow, the ex-husband with his new partner also wangled an invitation. All jolly civilised. For Christmas, anyway. Bleeping - one of the offspring messaged. “Happy Christmas! Already 25th and hot here! Have a wonderful stress-free time – no
WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM staying up ‘till silly o’clock going to church and no feeding of the five thousand tomorrow.Yay!” She didn’t feel very Yay! but managed something cheery in reply. Welling up, she imagined Christmas morning without the children leaping on the bed, clutching their stockings and squealing. Other daughter touched base “Heard from the second favourite child yet? Blizzard here! Carp for dinner – yuk.. Love you - eat, drink and be selfish for once.” Texting back their snow envy, they resumed their meal “Our Christmas – she’s right - is a selfish one. And I think that’s a good thing.” He observed, a little too heartily, tearing off a bit of keema naan. “The kids are doing exactly what they want and so, for a change, are we.” He nodded at her, encouragingly. But OH how she missed it! Her inner masochist craved the drudgery and chaos. The endless lists of things to do. The going to bed exhausted in the early hours of Christmas Day after the annual guilt trip to the church. Bodies all over the house, sleeping on beds, sofas and floors. The constant cooking, clearing up and cups of tea. She sighed nostalgically. They were lifted a little by the excellent whodunit and delicious curry; “And a bit left over” he observed, taking the plates out. Back in their dating days, they’d discovered a shared guilty pleasure; cold curry on hot buttered toast for breakfast. Soulmates. Just now she could have done with something sweet, though - and fleetingly longed for green triangles and purples ones. Not this year – decided they didn’t need all that chocolate. Just the two of them… “Nightcap?” He reappeared with glasses of flaming Sambuca, instead of the usual eggnog. Impressive, but yet another break with tradition, she thought as she went to the window and tweaked the curtain aside. The ground was white! Snowflakes were falling softly, silently. The forecast of snow had, for once, become actual, real, snow. Peering out at their surprising white Christmas, they toasted each other. “To absent loved ones.” And sipped. “To Christmases past.” “The power cut turkey.” “The mysterious case of the missing Barbie leg.” “The Boxing Day ‘flu.” Their glasses nearly drained, they raised them one last time. “To Phoebe and Norman, without whom we’d never have discovered our lovely village church” he conceded. She took his hand. “Our alternative, stress-free and selfish Christmas needs one ritual, at least.” And grabbing their coats they strolled arm in arm through the whirling flakes and towards the golden glow of midnight mass.

SAND DAMS & SUPPORT GROUPS HELPED AT SAINSBURYS FAREHAM What do Rotarians DO when they meet each week? Yes, there is food, fun, friendship and fellowship between us but ALSO there is a lot of much needed support for our own community and for those in need overseas. So much has been done now by the Rotary Club of Fareham, and other partners, to raise money for a Rotary supported Sand Dams Project. Alongside this the Club is raising vital funding for the local Congenital Myatonic Dystrophy Support Group – a subject close to the heart of our President this year Michael Cleaves. The dam has a filtering system that avoids evaporation and ensures those using it will be free from water-borne disease. We have so far raised £9,249 towards this. We continue to raise funds and will look forward to meeting shoppers at Sainburys, Broadcut, each day in Fareham on Wednesday 18th to Friday 20th December. If shoppers can spare a little towards these and our other Rotary charities while they shop that would be wonderful. As President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, Michael Cleaves, says: “I was born with muscular dystrophy myself and know first-hand how it can affect people’s lives. I felt supporting children with this muscle-wasting condition locally would help to provide information, advice, care, support and research. About 9,500 people in the UK have a form of myotonic dystrophy yet not many will have heard of it. I hope our endeavours will help people to understand much more about this condition.” So, look out for Rotarians during your Christmas shopping on 18th-20th December at Sainsburys, Broadcut, Fareham and assist us to provide safe drinking water for children in the African drylands AND help those children locally with Myatonic Dystrophy. BEES IN THE SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK TO BENEFIT FROM £50,000 NATURE CAMPAIGN
Bees in the South Downs National Park are set to benefit this month from a partnership between the UK’s National Parks and Forest Holidays. Forest Holidays has today launched their 2019 Black Friday offer called ‘Give Nature a Break’ which will see a £20 donation from every sale made between today and December 3rd to support five species conservation projects in the National Parks. Forest Holidays aims to donate in excess of £50,000 in total, of which the Bee Lines project will receive a share. Customers will also receive up to 20 per cent off bookings during the same period. Bee Lines is being spearheaded by the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity for the National Park, and is aiming to reverse the decline of bees. The charity will work with farmers and other landowners to create

new wildflower corridors – essentially a “road system” for insects – that will link habitats and encourage pollination.
FESTIVE TEAS AND TOURS AT HAMBLEDON VINEYARD
It comes as statistics show one-third of Britain’s bee population have disappeared over the past decade due to changes in land use, intensification of farming methods, habitat loss and climate change. Just £2.50 will help create a new square metre of wildflower meadow to support an abundance of bee pollinator species. Nick Heasman, Countryside Policy Manager for the South Downs National Park, said: “Our bees are in trouble and have been for quite a while, so Bee Lines is our way of fighting back and protecting these vital pollinators. When you consider that bees pollinate around one-third of food crops and 90 per cent of wild plants, which in turn provides food for livestock, you can see the scale of the crisis. We’d had lots of interest since launching the campaign and now to have the support of Forest Holidays is a tremendous boost. Every penny raised will make a real difference in helping to protect and enhance biodiversity.” Julia Bradbury, co-founder of The Outdoor Guide, said: “It’s easy to take the wildlife we see in our beautiful National Parks for granted. But species that we might think of as commonplace, like bees, butterflies and red squirrels, are actually under threat. Forest Holidays and the UK National Parks #givenatureabreak campaign is a brilliant way to support some of the threatened species that make our National Parks so special.” To find out more information on the projects supported please visit: https://www. forestholidays.co.uk/
