Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
Happy Kitchens completely renovated our kitchen, transformed two wardrobes and built us a lovely cupboard in our storage room. Ben was really enthusiastic during our initial consultations and extremely helpful with assisting us with our choices. He was also very accommodating when we changed our minds on a couple of elements during the process. Dan, our main fitter, could not have been more professional, flexible or helpful when we had a couple of small niggles, all of which were resolved with a smile – an absolute star! The other fitters who worked with Dan were all very courteous and hard-working. The key thing we recognised is their desire to make the customer happy – Job well done! Thank you Ben, Dan and James. Mr Wyatt, Winchester
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

HAUNTINGS (adj) evoking strong emotion, especially a sense of sadness that persists for a long time
WHAT'S ON AT TITCHFIELD FESTIVAL THEATRE THE LAST SECRET Jaq has a secret she doesn’t want to reveal yet but before she can draw breath, other secrets come tumbling out of the closet and who knows what will be said before the taxi arrives? A group of women of a ‘certain age’ meet up for a few days in Lee on the Solent. The joy of laughter is, on occasions, drowned by the crashing of waves on the rocky past, as six women share their lives, loves and losses. A play that explores how women deal with life, through memories, loyalty and above all humour.
ALL THAT REMAINS Set in 1985, early events from her wartime childhood haunt Rosa Goldberg – who sits in her room of a nursing home – a visit from someone in her past stirs aching memories – memories she would prefer to forget.. THE VOICE IN THE ROOM Set during the severe winter of 1978, three young homeless people break into an old Victorian house. Their attempts to keep warm, in one of the coldest winters on record, are disrupted by a voice from the past seeking revenge on one of the group - who is hiding an appalling secret… 24 – 29 February 2020 at The Acorn Studio, 73 St Margarets Lane, Titchfield, PO14 4BG Tickets: T: 01329 556156 E: info@titchfieldfestivaltheatre
ICON PAINTING COURSES WITH LOCAL ARTIST JACKIE HUNT RETURN, STARTING THIS MAY
Soberton based artist, Jackie Hunt, is running three icon painting courses later this year. The courses are now in their sixth year running annually at St Peters, Soberton and have attracted people from all over Hampshire and also as far afield as Australia! There are regular exhibitions where students who have painted icons can show them, these are also held at St Peters. At the end of each painting week a service of icon blessing is held by Fr David Morgan, this is an important part of the life of the icon. Jackie uses traditional materials and techniques, students are taught to paint a Byzantine style icon and also taught how to gild using 23.5 carat gold. The pigments used are natural and are the the traditional colours used. The icon panels themselves are made in Serbia. THE COURSES
CURDRIDGE AMATEUR DRAMATIC GROUP: THE SHADOW FACTORY
The Second World War, and Southampton was at the forefront of the struggle to make the famous Spitfire. What was it REALLY like? Was it all ‘stiff upper lip’, ‘we can take it’ and ‘we are all in it together’? Or was it more like REAL life? The stresses and strains of working and loving when any moment it could all end for ever. How did Government action affect the local people? The Curdridge Amateur Drama Group seeks to show you a vignette of how it may have
been like with their Spring Production of The Shadow Factory by Howard Brenton. Set locally in and around Woolston and Southampton, the famous Spitfire was designed and produced here. The factory became an important target for the Luftwaffe. But what happened once the factory had been bombed? CADG hopes to recreate the sights and sounds of those nostalgic but frightening days and pay tribute to ‘Our Greatest Generation’. The Reading Rooms, Reading Room lane, Curdridge, Botley, Southampton SO32 2HE.
May The May course runs from Monday 18th - Friday 22nd, focussing on Archangel Gabriel, taken from a 13th century icon at St Catherine's Monastery, Sinai. July The course in July focuses on a traditional icon of St. Peter holding a scroll, running from Monday 20th - Friday 24th
Thursday 26th March at 7.30pm; Friday 27th March at 7.30pm; Saturday 28th March, Matinee at 2.30pm and Evening Performance at 7.30pm. Bar/Tea/Coffee.You are encouraged to arrive in wartime regalia and a prize will be given at each performance for the most appropriate.

NEW YEAR, NEW DECADE
TIME TO VISIT NEW ZEALAND
S
tunning scenery, miles of beautiful coastline, helicopters over Glaciers, eerie fjords, wineries, sulphurous geysers, the list seems almost endless. All of this is what attracts so many people to New Zealand, but what is it that makes so many return to take another look ? Amity Travel believes it is down to the hospitality of the locals. New Zealand has been Amity Travels top destination in recent years, even outselling its nearest neighbour and tourism rival Australia, amongst the feedback received is just how friendly, down to earth and
helpful the New Zealanders are. The quietly confident, no nonsense, can do attitude allows them to go that extra mile in making sure your holiday of a lifetime is a wonderful memory that last forever. Amity Travel specialise in tailoring holidays to your own personal needs and understand what makes their clients come back and say “WOW we can’t wait to go again”. Part of that is down to the choice of accommodation that they offer, from boutique B&B’s, eco lodges and farmhouses right through to elite private homes, the one thing they have in common is that you will be staying with local people with local knowledge and all keen to pass it on in order to make your stay just that little bit different and special, they have even been known to take clients out on a guided tour just for the sheer enjoyment of showing them around. Making clients feel special, for New Zealanders this is all about the service and scenery, rather than Gold taps, private spas and flat screen TV’s, it means they can cater for all budgets. Amity Travel can offer B&Bs with views to die for, from as little as £90 a night for 2 person including breakfast, right through to the highly exclusive such as The Eagles Nest (www.eaglesnest.co.nz) where the top villa for 8 persons is a mere £9500 a night in high season. At Amity Travel we try to mix up the accommodation with hotels,

motels, farmhouses along with one or two self-catering options thrown in along the way, we even have the odd wacky one such as Woodlyn Park where you can spend the night in the Hobbit Motel or an Old Bristol Freighter Plane.
shore where you can choose your own Lobster and Crayfish before sitting down to enjoy your meal whilst spotting seals. Sea food is always going to be a winner and one of the best can be found at Moeraki, half way between Dunedin and Christchurch, Fleurs Place at the Old Jetty looks nothing more than a shack but is reputed to offer some of the best sea food in New Zealand with such winners as Oyster Pie and Shellfish Hot Pot. With so many gastronomic opportunities along your holiday, a spot of exercise never goes amiss and what better way than a guided walk along the Milford Track which incorporates a cruise along Lake Te Anau or the Routeburn track taking in the spectacular Routeburn Falls near Queenstown. It was once said that New Zealand was closed for business that is definitely not the case anymore, so if you are looking at a holiday in New Zealand, where better to start than talking with the travel experts at Amity Travel tailor Made.
Everyone should be able to spoil themselves whilst on holiday and there are plenty of opportunities in New Zealand to do just that. Food is a big part of New Zealand life; with so many wineries dotted around the country the opportunity to have a Champagne picnic seems to arise just about everywhere, from the top of Mountains to sailing through the fjords. One of the most unusual eateries has to be Nins Bin at Kaikoura, a caravan perched along the

There will be lots of beer to sample from many local breweries as well as some from further afield. We will also be bringing back the keg bar with a selection of 8 taps of truly fabulous brews! Hipster heaven indeed.
We are pleased to announce the 2nd Lapis Health and Events Community Care Show. The aim of the show is to reduce the worry and pressure around seeking care for a family member or friend. The free event will offer information and short seminars around choosing the right type of care at what can be a frightening and demoralising time for families. It will be hosted by domiciliary care experts Lapis Health and Events at Wickham community Centre on Friday 20th March. This year we are pleased and pround to say that we are being supported by newly elected MP for Meon Valley, Flick Drummond, who says: “This is a great opportunity for members of the public to come and find out more about the care sector and the options available for existing care and future needs. I would like to thank all those involved and Lapis Care for organising the event. I am really looking forward to attending.” 1.9 million people requested support from their council last year, an increase of 100,000 since 2015/16. This rate of increase has been driven by demographic trends. People are living longer with multiple or complex needs and therefore might require short or longterm social care. (Kingsfund, Key facts and figures about adult social care, 2019) “Searching for help and advice after diagnosis or in the early stages of requiring care can be a scary and difficult time. Regardless of who is ‘footing the bill’ , it is vital that family members can be reassured that those requiring care are looked after with kindness and compassion. It’s not always the best option to trawl through the internet looking for the help you need,” Ms Blacklock said.
The Petersfield Beer and Cider Festival is returning in 2020 for 2 sessions of great drinks, music and food. Once again, it will be taking place in our gorgeous town of Petersfield in Hampshire and will take place at the awesome Petersfield Festival Hall. We are building on the successful formula and are taking on all your awesome feedback for the Festival.
As always, there will be fantastic water cooled Real Ale and Cider from all across the region backed up with quality live music and fantastic hot food. It’s going to be our best beer festival yet, with all the fun and excitement packed into 2 sessions on one day so everyone can enjoy the beers together. More information and tickets available at: www.petersfieldfest.com/wp/index.php/ petersfield-beer-and-cider-festival/
“We want to take the strain out of this by providing a one-stop-shop to answer the who, what, where and how’s.” She added: “With the figures on the rise it is important that the information required to continue to live well is clear and freely available.” Lapis Health and Events free Community Care Show runs from 10:00-15.30 at Wickham Community Centre, Friday 20th March 2020. www.lapiscare.com contact@lapiscare.com

WELLBEING
BETTER HEARING IMPROVES OVERALL HEALTH People can now expect to live longer than ever before, and as we live longer it’s important that we look after ourselves to continue to live healthy lives. Hearing well plays a vital role in this. Hearing loss has been linked to several chronic disabling conditions such as cognitive decline, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and a risk of falling. In this article I’d like to focus on dementia. This presents an immense challenge and in 2015, there were an estimated 47 million people with dementia worldwide, and it is thought that this number will jump significantly to about 66 million by 2030, and 115 million by 2050. It’s been proven. The relationship between hearing health and overall health is real.
SO, DO YOU TRUST YOUR TAP WATER? Do you remember the last time you were able to trust and reconnect with the ancient fresh and wild therapeutic qualities of water? Though we would all love to have mountain spring water flowing into our homes! Our reality is different, we have grown accustomed to the Eau de toilette of Chlorine and would prefer not to dwell on the possibilities of what else might be finding its way into our tap water, such as micro-plastics, oestrogens, fluoride, and Glyphosate.(1) Does our distrust in tap water(2) persuade us to buy bottled water, even though we know this tethers us to the environmental catastrophe of more plastic bottle pollution? Is there a water system capable of removing the mischief in our tap water, whilst re-creating the therapeutic qualities of vital spring water? What value would we place on such an innovation? In 1979 Jochberg, Austria, just such an innovation was created, known as ‘Grander Water Revitalization’ This discovery challenges orthodox thinking and now 41 years later, along with many peer reviewed papers (3) .(4) (5) it is now clear that the science of water is far more complex than was first realized. As in the ancient theory of Homeopathy, water is now understood to have memory and the capacity to carry information (8). We have entered a new era of scientific understanding that gives us new distinctions in the science of water and the impact that water has on our cellular health.(6) (7) (8)(9)(10) To learn how you can change your tap water please call 0333 3909479 or email waterinfo@granderwater.co.uk References: (1) Journal of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease 2013 Aug; (2) If we care about plastic waste, why won’t we stop drinking bottled water? There is good news though with growing research showing that treating hearing loss can improve or limit the risk of some of these serious conditions. A 25-year-long study published in 2015 found that hearing aid use reduced the risk of cognitive decline associated with hearing loss. And in 2017, researchers reported that treating hearing loss in midlife is the single greatest change a person can make to lower their risk of dementia. ¹ Hearing aid wearers have an easier time socialising and enjoying group activities. This can help stave off potential dementia by keeping the brain busy. Music listening also boosts cognitive functions such as attention, communication and memory. ² Hearing aids – especially those offering wireless audio streaming – allow listeners to enjoy those positive health benefits. Today’s cutting-edge hearing aids, not only help treat hearing loss but are specifically designed to help people achieve good cognitive health by monitoring their overall health and wellbeing. Integrated sensors and artificial intelligence inside the hearing aids detect movement, activities and different gestures to provide real-time feedback about overall body and cognitive fitness. Written by Sam Longman. Sam is a fully qualified Audiologist registered with the Health Care Professional Council and is based at The Alresford Hearing Studio. ¹ ² ³

The roadshows will include expert guidance for stargazers on how to make the most of your telescope and one lucky person will receive a brand-new telescope as part of a quiz competition. The festival runs from February 7 to 23 and includes events across the length and breadth of the National Park. Now in its fourth year, the festival celebrates the National Park’s International Dark Sky Reserve status, which was awarded in 2016 and recognises it as one of the 16 best places in the world to view the moon and stars. Other organisations are also joining in the astronomy festival, with events at Gilbert White’s House in Hampshire and a fourday weekender event ‘Petworth Dark Skies’ at the National Trust’s Petworth House. Dan Oakley, Dark Skies Ranger, said: “We’re excited to be announcing the line-up for our 2020 Dark Skies Festival, which really has become one of our most popular annual fixtures, underlining the tremendous interest for stargazing. We had more than 5,000 people attend last year and we’re hoping our expanded schedule this year will break all previous records. Seeing the immense views of the starry sky over the National Park is an incredible experience and we’re hoping to share it with more people than ever.
“It’s now four years since the South Downs was designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve and it stands as one of the many achievements in the first decade of the National Park. Aside from being unbelievably beautiful and awe-inspiring for us to look at, the dark star-studded skies are vital for all flora and fauna. “Life on earth evolved with bright days and dark nights, so nocturnal species such as owls, bats and moths rely on this natural shift that repeats every 24 hours. More than 60 per cent of invertebrates and 30 percent of vertebrates are purely nocturnal, while many of the other species are crepuscular, active at dawn and dusk. So you can see how crucial dark skies are for biodiversity and the health of the environment.” Laura Warren, Events and Engagement Officer for the National Park, added: “There is something for everyone at this year’s festival, whether you’re new to stargazing or a seasoned pro. “To tie in with the 10th anniversary theme we will be exploring whether there may be a total of 10 planets in the solar system if you count in the dwarf planet Pluto and the mysterious planet X which scientists believe exists, but has not yet been discovered. We’ll also be suggesting 10 actions you can take to protect the night’s sky. “The festival ties nicely with the half-term holidays so it’s a great opportunity for young people to learn more about astronomy. No matter what the weather is outside, you can still come and learn about the amazing dark skies in our National Park. It’s time to embrace the darkness!” People will be invited to share their images of the stars and moon using the hashtags #EmbraceTheDarkness and #SouthDowns over the two weeks. In Hampshire Stargazing South Downs comes to Festival Hall, Petersfield, Hampshire on Tuesday 18 February, 4pm to 8pm. This is free to attend with no booking required.

EDUCATION can help pupils to achieve success in that specific situation. The character of each superhero was introduced through a series of outdoor challenges during an HPL day. Pupils worked together to cross a swamp in order to develop an understanding of meta-thinking, used their linking skills to navigate the amazing maze and built a paper mountain by thinking creatively, fluently and flexibly.
HIGH-PERFORMING SUPERHEROES LEAD THE WAY AT ST SWITHUN’S PREP SCHOOL. Staff at St Swithun’s Prep School have invented a compelling way to transform young children into High Performance Learners. The school, in Winchester, has created five superhero characters to bring its High Performance Learning (HPL) philosophy to life. HPL, which is embedded across the curriculum and all areas of school life, systematically teaches each child the skills and behaviours that enable them

to achieve the best they can during their time at school and equips them to succeed in the next stage of their education. The philosophy recognises that all children have the potential for high performance, regardless of ability. Each of the school’s superheroes represents one of the Advanced Cognitive Performance characteristics which form the backbone of the HPL philosophy: meta-thinking, linking, analysing, creating and realising. Dressed in vivid costumes, each of the superheroes makes regular appearances in assembly, at school plays and in various other school activities to demonstrate how his or her particular superpower ‘This house believes that the voting age should be lowered to 16’ and also ‘This house believes that the NHS should never be privatised’ - both being given by Senior teams from the College. Boundary Oak chose interesting topics too: ‘This house believes that video games can be harmful to young people’ (by their Intermediate team) and also ‘This house believes that quality of life in the 21st century is the highest it has ever been’ given by their Senior team.
HENRY CORT WINNERS
Once again the youth of Fareham excelled themselves in the Group round for ‘Youth Speaks’ with their public speaking skills on Monday evening 20th January organised by the Rotary Clubs of Fareham and Fareham Meon. This event has been taking place in the Council Chamber of Fareham Borough Council for many years and this time involved students from Boundary Oak School and Henry Cort Community College in Fareham. The competition is called ‘Rotary Youth Speaks – A Debate’ and had some fascinating topics: Henry Cort chose
The HPL superheroes and their characteristics appear on posters around the school and are the basis of the house points rewards system. As the language and ethos of HPL become part of the fabric of the school, there has been a significant impact on the students’ awareness and understanding of their own learning. They are able to make connections to prior knowledge and identify the value in reflection, practice and collaboration. Pupils recognise that learning is made up of lots of different skills that all need developing – it is not just about ‘knowing’ the right answer. www.stswithuns.com Rotarian John Landaw from the Rotary Club of Fareham. Prizes were presented by the President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, Michael Cleaves, who said ‘I congratulate all the students who worked so hard to debate these important subjects and also thank the teachers and parents who have supported them. I feel sure the skills they have acquired will prove useful in their future careers.’ In conclusion President Michael thanked all the teams that took part and said how impressed he had been by the debates.

TABLE FOR ONE © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2020
Deftly gathering up cutlery and empty glass, the waiter removes the place setting opposite. At his small table in the middle of the restaurant, a lone diner peruses the menu. To his right, a young couple. Smiling, happy and already tucking into their meze, he overhears their conversation unavoidable in the tiny eatery. “This is nice. I’ve never been to a Greek restaurant.” “It’s very good, really authentic – been here many times.” “Who with? Not your ex?” A look of dawning concern on her face. Blissfully unaware of his potentially fatal faux pas, he enthuses “Oh yes, she liked it a lot.” Incredulous, she mutters. “That’s…. weird.” “Pardon?” The poor lamb, he’s wide eyed and mystified. “It’s Valentine’s night and you’ve brought me to her favourite place?” “Oh… no, it’s not like that! She was super fussy but said it was the best food around. I thought that it’d be perfect for you” he gabbles. She weighs up his reasoning. “I see.. Well, that’s quite sweet, actually. And I forgive you.” “For bringing you here?” “No, for making me sound like a harpy…” They laugh, lean forward and kiss. At his table for one, lone diner looks away, smiles to himself and breathes a sigh of relief that all is well. The waiter squeezes between the other tables to take his order. “Taramasalata, Greek salad and souvlaki with chips - Oh, and a small carafe of Retsina, please Mateo.” Might as well, this one last time. Sipping his wine, he reminisces about their Greek holidays in the 80’s. In ‘Diary of a Sloane Ranger’ they’d seen pictures of poshies partying in Corfu and had gone there too. Cases packed with their holiday wardrobe; pseudo military, matching denim and far too much neon, they’d felt so yuppy. Wouldn’t ever be going back there again.. The taramasalata eaten and gone, he’s chewing on a mouthful of chargrilled pork. The young guys sat at the window table on the other side of him are smart in their suits; one in blue, one in grey, hair just so, sharp-edged beards. Had he been that groomed at their age – the age when he’d first met her? Their conversation floats over and lone diner deduces that blue suit is a chef, as he explains to his companion; “Valentine’s a huge strain on a restaurant kitchen. You can’t serve four or six covers for one table at once, you see. Lots of pairs of fiddly dishes for all the tables for two.”
‘And my table for one’ lone diner thinks, guiltily. The chef continues “which was why I suggested coming to a small restaurant with a simple menu. And I rest my case – faultless. The feta filo triangles are defo going on the menu at work. But you haven’t asked me how I was able to get Valentine’s night off...” “I was surprised..” “Well, I begged, I pleaded, I even offered them the recipe for my Mexican mole sauce. And when that didn’t work, I said I’d work all Christmas and New Year. And it was worth it, so I could do this..” Blue suit chap gets down on one knee in the tiny space between the wall and chair and opens a very small box. Grey suit guy takes a moment, blinking rapidly. The briefest pause, then the proposal is accepted. Looking on, lone diner breathes a sigh of relief that all is well. As he raises his glass to the happy couple, he remembers his own proposal many years before. It was in a vine covered taverna overlooking the harbour, after the world’s most expensive seafood dinner. But worth it, as she too had said ‘yes’ when he’d got down on one knee in a crowded restaurant with a very small box. The world had changed since then, but love, thankfully, was eternal. Glancing at his watch, he orders a coffee and settles up. He’d enjoyed his last meal at their favourite restaurant, but how he’d missed having her sat opposite. She’d have had crispy kalamari, moving on to slow cooked lamb kleftiko; tender, tomato-ey with little sweet bursts of garlic. The restaurant door opens, admitting a chilly blast of frosty February air. It quickly closes and the latecomer drops down into the seat opposite him. “Darling!” he exclaims “Just in time before your coffee got cold. Did dinner with your book club pals go OK?” She leans across the table and kisses him. “Yes thanks - all goodbyes said and this time tomorrow you and I will be halfway to Melbourne! I’ll surely miss the northern hemisphere, but I’m so looking forward to living down the road from the kids.” And they leave, hand in hand. The door closes behind them.. “Oh, thank goodness!” the young woman announces emotionally to the room in general. “With him dining all alone, I just imagined the worst!” Nods and murmurs of agreement ripple outwards, as the other diners breathe a collective sigh of relief that all is.. in fact.. well.

YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION..MAKE A WILL FOR 2020 Never made a Will? Made a Will but it is out of date? Either way you could risk your nest egg passing to the wrong person and leaving your loved ones in the lurch. Make 2020 the year you make a new Will. “The importance of making a Will cannot be overstated. It is not safe to assume that your assets will simply pass to your next of kin.The implications for your family, loved ones and/ or friends of you dying without a Will can be far reaching” explains Ben Holden Solicitor at MacDonald Oates. WHAT IF I DIE WITHOUT MAKING A WILL? If you die without making a Will, a set of laws known as the intestacy rules will apply to your estate. These rules set out the beneficiaries of your assets. If you are married with children, the intestacy rules divide your assets so that your spouse receives a legacy of £250,000 plus your personal effects. The rest of your estate is divided into two – one half to your children and the other half to your spouse. This can cause difficulties for those that are in a second marriage but have children from a first marriage and/or if the family home forms part of your estate. A well-drawn Will however, can cater for both parties. If you are not married and do not have children then you risk your estate passing to distant relatives. With a Will you can elect partners, friends, colleagues and/or charities to receive your estate. Remember the law does not recognise common law husbands or wives
FANTASTIC SHOPPERS HELP ROTARY CLUB OF FAREHAM SUPPORT CHARITIES! Music, laughter and festive clothes were the order of the day on 18-20th December by members of the Rotary Club of Fareham thanks to Sainsbury, Broadcut, Fareham. Shoppers were greeted in their foyer with Rotarians, a choir and information on the charities our collections support which include the local group for those with Congenital Myatonic Dystrophy.
– if you die without a Will your partner might not receive anything.
or if your Will has another type of trust, then you risk losing the residence allowance.
DOES IT MATTER IF MY WILL IS OUT OF DATE? Equally as problematic is a Will that is out of date. With the passing of time priorities change. Parents with a young family are likely to have different priorities to those who are recently retired. If you have not checked your Will for more than 5 years there is a good chance that it will be out of date. As such you could risk your estate passing to the wrong beneficiaries. Also the persons you appoint as executors, trustees and/or guardians may no longer be appropriate. Do you still keep in touch with your executors? Are they aware they have been appointed? Would they still be willing to act? If your executor is in a similar age bracket to you, you may consider appointing a younger executor to act alongside them.
A similar exception to this rule does not apply to grandparents who leave part (or all) of their home on trust for their grandchildren. If your Will leaves any part of your estate (in particular your home or the residue) to your grandchildren or if the grandchildren inherit in the event that your children die before you, then you ought to review your Will.
WHAT ARE THE INHERITANCE TAX IMPLICATIONS? For Inheritance Tax purposes it can be advantageous to direct your assets to certain beneficiaries for example a charity. One such area for consideration is the family home and the new residence allowance. The Inheritance Tax threshold is currently set at £325,000. It is possible for homeowners to qualify for an uplift called the residence allowance. The residence allowance is set at £150,000 for this tax year and increases to £175,000 from April 2020. At that point, it will be possible to have a tax threshold of £500,000 – married couples can combine their allowances making their overall threshold £1m. To qualify for the residence allowance your home must pass to your descendants and not on trust. Parents who leave their home (or their entire estate) on trust for their children until they reach adulthood may not qualify for the allowance. In such circumstances you may still qualify for the allowance provided you meet the conditions of a bereaved minors trust (the children inherit at 18 years) or an 18-25 years trust (the children inherit on or before their 25th birthday). If you specify a later age Three days of fundraising could not have been so successful without the interest and support of those shopping in Sainsbury and they were superb! As President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, Michael Cleaves, said “Christmas is a joyous time of year for many but Rotarians are ever mindful of the needs of those less fortunate and we have raised approximately £3,000 for these good causes over the three
The rules in this respect are complex and it is essential that you understand the implications of the terms of your Will, including gifts to grandchildren. A poorly drawn Will could risk exposing more of your estate than necessary to the 40% tax band. WHEN SHOULD I REVIEW MY WILL? Ideally you should review your Will every 3-5 years, or sooner, if there is a change of circumstances. If for example, your financial circumstances have changed, you come into inheritance, have been divorced, widowed or the kids have flown the nest, it is time to review your Will. If you are due to marry (or have married), you should be aware that marriage revokes a Will. Again, this can be important for those marrying for a second time and who have children from a first marriage. SHOULD I SEEK LEGAL ADVICE? Legal advice is essential when preparing your Will. Whilst there are ‘DIY packages’, it is easy to get things wrong. Remember your Will deals with your assets, including your home, investments and savings. A faulty Will could result in those assets going to the wrong party. A professionally drawn Will, on the other hand ensures your loved ones are protected when you are no longer here so if you have yet to think of a New Year’s resolution make 2020 the year you make your new Will. If you need advice, please speak to a member of our team on 01730 268111 (Petersfield) or 01730 816711 (Midhurst). Written by Ben Holden days with more still coming in!” The Club meets at Cams Hall Estate Golf Club on Thursdays at 12:30 and if you are interested in knowing more of what we do please contact farehamrotary.pr@gmail.com for further details. We support our local community in the Fareham area and have great fun in the process!

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS ACCUSED OF A CRIME Chloe Jay, Partner, answers your questions on what you can do if your child is accused of a crime MY SON HAS BEEN ASKED IN FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH POLICE – WILL I BE ALLOWED TO GO WITH HIM? It is important to establish whether your son is being interviewed under caution, (which means the police suspect him of
involvement in a crime,) as opposed to being interviewed as a witness. If he is under 18 years of age the law dictates he must have an appropriate adult present for an interview under caution.
MY DAUGHTER IS 12 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF SHOPLIFTING, COULD SHE BE PROSECUTED? In a word, yes. The age of criminal responsibility in the UK is 10. This means that any child over that age can be arrested, prosecuted and sentenced at court. It depends whether the police are called to deal with the matter and whether your daughter accepts her involvement in interview. She may then be eligible for an out of court disposal such as a youth caution. Obviously though she shouldn’t accept this if she hasn’t committed the offence and it would be wise to seek legal advice.
It may well be that you can fulfil this role provided you have not witnessed something material to the case which could exclude you. The role of the appropriate adult is to facilitate communication between the young person and the police, they cannot provide legal advice. It is always best therefore to ask for a lawyer to attend and advise on the merits of the case as well. If your son is

Owner Digby Cooper said: “We have lost out on £40,000.This has decimated us, we are a small, family business. We are going to struggle. This is a major part of our survival. We are the small fish in this, I didn't think in a million years we would be in this position.” Following the announcement, Mr Cooper has been in discussion with NCS chief executive Michael Lynas, who confirmed that the trust would not be paying.
The future of Marwell Activity Centre hangs in the balance after a charity involved in delivering a government scheme has gone into administration. The outdoor activity centre has had to make seven people redundant and has not be paid £40,000 for delivering the National Citizenship Scheme. The family run business has been operating for 40 years, and was due to be paid the £40,000 in October, but last month the company were angered to find that The Challenge, who owe the money, has appointed an administrator. The Challenge has been heavily involved in delivering NCS since it was launched by the government in 2010.
MEON VALLEY LIONS CLUB NEWS
BUSY, BUSY LIONS The winter period has been extremely busy for the Meon Valley Lions with numerous social and charity events each side of Christmas. During December the annual Christmas collection proved our best year ever! Everyone must have loved Santa’s new sleigh because this year Santa and his helpers raised £5,423.30, nearly £1,000 more than last year. A big thank you goes to all the Friends-of-Lions volunteers who helped us on those cold, damp evenings. Of course, the biggest thanks go to you, the generous members of the public from the village communities throughout the Meon Valley, for digging deep and boosting our funds. This is our one of biggest annual fundraising activities and an essential part of our programme, second to our Fete (don't forget
“I am staring into the abyss, I've pushed away schools and tens of thousands of other business. I did the scheme for three years with them and we've just been spat out at the end not being paid and told to go fend for yourselves.” The centre is looking at a massive shortfall of hundreds of thousands of pounds for next year with another organisation, Invasion, working with NCS pulling its reservation around the same time. “We were holding 1,000 beds up until two weeks ago, they then pulled the rest of my provision which I was holding for them. I can't fill 1,000 beds on such short notice, all my beds
are booked a year in advance.” The business has not been given a reason as to why the reservation was cancelled. The Challenge entered administration following five months of talks with the NCS to resolve certain significant issues. Bill Roland,The Challenge chairman, said: “The decision to appoint an administrator was not taken lightly, but after every possible avenue had been exhausted. We made this difficult decision with great sadness and considerable anger in which The Challenge has been forced into it.” An NCS spokesperson said: “We have a great deal of sympathy with Marwell Activity Centre for the position it is in. However, it needs to take the matter up with the administrator of The Challenge.”They added: “It would be inappropriate for NCS Trust to use further taxpayers' money to pay Marwell when that money has already, in effect, been paid.” Marwell Activity Centre continues to operate due to Mr Cooper putting a new business plan in place. He added: “Onwards and upwards business as usual!” Tel: 01962 777547 www.marwellactivitycentre.co.uk Hurst Ln, Owslebury,Winchester SO21 1EZ

proved highly popular with a full complement of Lions turning out. An excellent meal and dancing was, enjoyed by all. Our thanks go to Hilary White and the social team for their hard work in organising this and other dates in the social calendar throughout the year.
The Meon Valley Lions Club were proud to support two important local charities this Christmas Home-Start (Meon Valley) provides trained volunteers and expert support helping families with young children through challenging times. Families struggling with post-natal depression, isolation, physical health problems, bereavement and many other issues receive support. Thanks to the generous support of the public, MVLC donated 10 hampers this Christmas, to families in our area.
CHARITY FISHING FESTIVAL On 26th January the Lions embark on one of their more challenging activities in the fund-raising calendar, when we descend on Weston Shore, near Netley, for the annual charity Ford Fishing Festival. This year will be the fishing competition’s 45th year and as last year, the monies raised from the event are donated to The Rose Road Association. They provide vital services for over 300 children and young people with severe physical disabilities, learning difficulties and/or autism from across Hampshire. If we’ve thawed out.
The Rainbow Centre assists children with Cerebral Palsy, neurological disorders and those recovering from head injuries. They also help adults who have conditions such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke or Head Injuries and using a system called Conductive Education, enable people to live more independent and fulfilled lives across the Meon Valley area. MVLC donated a much needed fridge to the Rainbow Centre this Christmas. On the social front, our annual Christmas dinner at the Bold Forester in Soberton
JOIN IN THE FUN! If you have time on your hands and want to help raise funds for local charities, we’d love to hear from you. Its not all about fund raising, we have a great time attending social events (obviously all the money we raise goes to charity and we fund our entertainment) so if you’d like to do something worthwhile and have fun at the same time get in contact. www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk/_contact. html

MEON VOICES PRACTISING FOR SPRING CONCERTS
Do you love to sing, but are worried about auditioning for a choir? The popular Bishop’s Waltham-based four-part Meon Voices choir could be just the group for you because there are no auditions! Reading music helps, but is not mandatory – the choir gives you support. There is so much joy to be had from choral singing, as well as many other benefits. Singing helps regulate your heart rate, improves your mental health and strengthens the feeling of togetherness you have with your community.
BISHOP'S WALTHAM ROTARY FEBRUARY NEWS CHARITY FASHION SHOW Our charity fashion show at the Jubilee Hall is 26th March 2020, to support the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Supported by the leading fashion outlets in BW: Boutique ME, Luvvit and Labels, displaying the latest Spring and Summer Fashions. The ticket price of £15 includes a glass of Prosecco and canapes, and the doors open at 6.30PM to visit stalls; Fashion Show starts at 7.30PM. Tickets are available now from Boutique ME. CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS Around four and a half thousand pounds was collected during the two weeks leading up to Christmas in and around Bishop's Waltham, Fair Oak, Wickham and Waltham Chase. So, slightly less than last year: but that was despite the awful weather. Once again, we would like to give a big thank you to all those people who contributed. We hope the children enjoyed Father Christmas visiting. The funds collected will be used for local needy causes. ANNUAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP The Bishop's Waltham Rotary Club
If this is something you are interested in, Meon Voices is rehearsing for its Spring concerts. Weekly practices are held in the United Free Church, Basingwell Street in Bishop’s Waltham each Monday evening 7.30 – 9.30 p.m., September – December and January –April.
Annual Golf Championship took place at Corhampton Golf Club in October. There were 14 entrants, 8 current Rotarians and 6 former Rotarians. The rain held off until play started and then the heavens opened to such an extent that the match was reduced to 9 holes. Even so, all the players were soaked to the skin! Despite the awful conditions there were a number of excellent scores with the winner, Colin Carter, hailed as this year's champion. The pairs competition was won by Paul Cordery and Rick Castle, which means that the honour of organising next year's event goes to Rick Castle. Let’s hope the weather is kinder next year!
The choir has members from all local villages, and is formed from the four main vocal ranges: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. Although each range is currently well-represented by existing members, vacancies come up at the start of most seasons and the organisers welcome applications to join regardless of voice type, to join the waiting list for when vacancies arise. And remember, no audition necessary. All pieces are provided not only on sheet music, but also electronically so you can listen to your parts and learn them by heart in the privacy of your own home before practising with the choir. It’s really rewarding. For further information please contact Phil 01489 579078 or email coundleypj@yahoo. com or Maureen 01488903359 email alan@ agbuckland.plus.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.
