After Makeover
Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
After an initial meeting with Ben at Happy Kitchens we decided that the kitchen face lift option would not work for us. So we invited other kitchen companies to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing. Thank you Ben, Dan and James. The fitting team are fantastic, skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. I would happily recommend the Happy Kitchen team to anyone. Mr M. Hensman

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS NEW YEAR, NEW TRENDS
With a new season around the corner, Spring cleaning is in the forefront of our minds. Moving into a new decade, there are certain items in our homes that can feel slightly passĂŠ, and others that could define home style for the early 2020s. De-cluttering the home is always a therapeutic experience, but trying to work out what to get dispense of and what to retain can be tricky. It is certainly not our place to say whether to replace an item purely because it isn't en vogue; but if you are set on updating the look of your home, here is what is likely to be on trend for the coming decade.
BIOPHILIA Biophilia, meaning love of nature, focuses on our innate attraction to nature and natural processes. This is certainly a word we will be seeing used much more during 2020, seeing it translated into our homes in terms of adding greenery and houseplants. The houseplant has certainly seen a revival in recent years. Not only do they add to the overall aesthetic of a room, they also improve air quality and remove airborne toxins, pollens, bacteria and mould. Spider plants, ferns, cacti, aloe vera and cheese plants, are all easy to care for and would look stunning in any living room. FORGET GREY, GO GREEN Grey has been the go-to paint colour that has defined the past decade
in all its shades. The market is now completely saturated with various different shades of grey, and it is too soon to say whether it is over or not, but it is being phased out in favour of other colours.Warmers shades (see pink, peach, etc) are gradually replacing grey; but trend forecasters are predicting mint green or 'neo mint' to take its place in 2020. Described as 'an oxygenating, fresh tone that harmonises science and technology with nature', this bright, crisp, shade sounds very appealing. SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE Much like the fashion industry, consumers are looking for well designed furniture with longevity. When it comes to choosing new items of furniture in 2020, don't automatically go for the cheapest option. Find pieces that will last for many years and treat purchases as an investment.
ART DECO RETURNS! Harking back to the style of the original Roaring 20's, Art Deco inspired items are set to return - copper, gold or stainless steel are used in this interior trend for 2020. Mix plush fabrics and luxurious prints, glass and lacquer are also go-to styles.

HOME JASPER ACCENT ARMCHAIR FROM MADE.COM
TEXTURED FURNITURE Textured furniture, is set to become popular in 2020. BouclĂŠ in particular, which you may recognise as a material used to make jumpers, is working very well for furniture.
10 ITEMS YOU WILL SEE IN THE HOME THIS YEAR
clingfilm and sandwich bags, more people are opting for reusable containers, such as silicone bags and beeswax food wraps.
Modsy, an online interior design resource, released its 'State of the Home' report at the end of last year, which predicts decor trends for this year based on users' interests over the past year.
CANE FURNITURE IS SET TO RETURN Cane furniture is predicated to be hugely popular throughout 2020, with modern updates on this '70s trend popping up. It may be time to dig out that old garden furniture from the back of your parents shed?
Some trends will continue from 2019, but new styles such as textured furniture and statement lighting will gain traction. FLOOR SEATING Floor seating, such as bean bags, have been on the public radar since 2017, and interest in other floor seating has expanded into other options such as pillows, poufs and stools.
REUSABLE FOOD CONTAINERS With more people than even tuned in to the harmful nature of single use plastics, like
AIR FRYERS Air fryers are becoming more popular, with the number of people buying them in the past two years increasing tenfold. Being relatively inexpensive, don't be surprised if you see them popping up in your friends' homes. The one pictured is a Tefal Actifry. WIRELESS SECURITY CAMERAS These aren't exactly new, but with more features being added expect to see them in more homes than ever. Not only can you stream footage live to your mobile device, you can also find ones that are compatable with smart speakers/voice controlled AI assistants.
WIRELESS CHARGERS The next item set to become a part of the wireless trend are phone/tablet/smart watch chargers. Interest has been building for the last couple of years, but now the technology is available for Apple products, expect the popularity to skyrocket. SMART SPEAKERS Smart speakers, such as Amazon's Echo Dot, have been growing very popular since their inception in the mid 2010s, and expect this trend to continue as the 'smart home' becomes more mainstream. REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES Returning to our previous point about single use plastics, reusable water bottles have been extremely popular. With the products now being extremely durable and with long pasting temperature controls, products such as Chilly's Bottle and Hydro Flask are flying off the shelves. STATEMENT LIGHTING With Art Deco inspired styles set to be huge in 2020, geometric lighting and other statement pieces are going to be particularly popular when it comes to ceiling lights. Hiking, Bears & Glaciers Western Canada: the land of Mountains, Glaciers, Bears and Mountie.
I
f you are thinking of visiting Canada for the first time, Canada’s amazing scenery and wildlife will no doubt be very high on the list of things to see and do. The opportunity to see bears in their natural habitat, take in the mountain air as you ride a Gondola across Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains or maybe sleep in a tepee as you discover the history of the Native Canadian Indians. For those who have already visited the world’s secondlargest country will know there is much more on offer, from sophisticated cities and award-winning vineyards
to endless tundra, empty beaches and some of the nicest people on the planet. Canada stretches about 4,000 miles from coast to coast but its population is only half that of the UK, so getting away from it all is easy. Follow one of the many popular trails and you might see half a dozen walkers in a day; rent a canoe and you could be the only boat on the lake. How to get around is a major decision as this vast country can offer some challenging logistical issues without allowing for the necessary time spent on planning your route. Amity Travel tailor Made are able to offer a range of solutions from a choice of pre-planned selfdrive itineraries which offer well-trodden routes as well as some lesser known ones, that are known to exceed expectations, they also offer the advantage of having all your accommodation and some of your excursions and activities sorted in advance, allowing you more time to get on and enjoy the holiday.

If you don’t want the responsibility of driving then maybe escorted touring is the answer, this is a particularly good option if time is of the essence or you just like the idea of travelling as part of a group and having an your own tour escort to show you around. Rail travel is always a favourite with Canada, again due to its vastness it makes for the perfect way to get around whilst enjoying the scenery. The Rocky Mountaineer is the most well known of the rail journeys and fits in nicely with many of the self drive options. The Gold Leaf service of the Rocky Mountaineer is known worldwide for its standard of service whilst the Dome Carriage offers 360 degree views of the stunning scenery and wildlife where you can expect to see moose, long horned sheep and even bears if you are lucky, and if that is not enough the lower
The truth of it is in order to get the most from your time in Canada you need to do two of the above if not all three and you could even add a cruise in to the mix as well. A holiday in Canada should be an experience of a lifetime, for this to happen it needs to be well planned. Amity Travel Tailor Made are experts in planning and arranging holidays that are tailored to their client requirements, by making an appointment to sit down and discuss your plans with the staff of Amity Travel Tailor Made, you can guarantee you will be getting your holiday of to the best possible start.

ROTARY WISHING WELL IN FAREHAM SHOPPING CENTRE MAKES DREAMS COME TRUE!
In cooperation with Fareham Shopping Centre, The Rotary Club of Fareham’s charity Wishing Well has been making dreams come true for many years now. Since June 2019, for his Presidential year, Michael Cleaves’ chosen charity has been the local Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy Support Group that will benefit from shoppers’ donations. As President Michael said: “I thank the shoppers in Fareham Shopping Centre very much for their contributions, whether big or small, into the Wishing Well which I know will be very much appreciated by the charity. As I was born with muscular dystrophy myself I know how it can affect people’s lives, and shoppers in the
UNLICENSED DOG BREEDERS ORDERED TO PAY BACK MORE THAN £600,000 A mother and daughter who bred dogs without a licence, rearing at least 193 litters, have been ordered to pay back more than £600,000 by Southampton Crown Court. This follows an investigation and successful prosecution by Winchester City Council. The court heard that Lucinda Rolph and her daughter,Victoria Rolph oversaw a dog breeding business in Hampshire, which operated without a licence. Evidence gathered by the council’s animal welfare team demonstrated that the Rolphs’ illegally sold at least 193 litters over a five year period between 2013-2018. A total of 38 different breeds including Jack Russells, Miniature Dachshunds and various cross breeds were sold online for prices ranging from £500£1500. The council’s investigation started after a complaint was passed to the team in July 2017. The complex case required the council to provide detailed evidence - this included obtaining an entry warrant for the property and identifying online accounts for websites, some using false identities, but linked back
Centre have been very generous. We are very grateful to the shopping centre AND its shoppers for their support.” www. myotonicdystrophysupportgroup.org In addition whatever the Rotary Club of Fareham raise in the Wishing Well, which so far is an amazing £750 with more still coming in, the shopping centre very generously donate money they raise during their events. As Mike Taylor, Centre Manager of Fareham Shopping Centre, said: “Since August last year we have raised an additional £1,260 which we will pass to the Rotary Club of Fareham for their Wishing Well collection. The good news is that this amount will hopefully be added to during our events this Easter with the support of our shoppers!” The shopping centre’s chosen charity is Dementia Friendly Hampshire that supports the local Dementia Friendly Fareham and Gosport group www. dementiafriendlyhampshire.org.uk All money raised in the Wishing Well is split equally between our Rotary charity and the Centre’s. If you want to know more about the Rotary Club of Fareham, and consider joining in with our activities, do email us at farehamrotary.pr@gmail.com to the Rolphs’ email and phone numbers. Witness statements were taken from people who had bought puppies from the Rolphs. The law at the time of the offence required people breeding dogs for sale must have a licence as a dog breeding establishment if they reared more than five litters in a year. The aim of the licensing regime is to ensure that the dogs are reared in safe, comfortable conditions and protected from disease for example, through appropriate vaccination. In summary, Judge Henry said that the illegal operation had been carried on for some considerable time. Lucinda Rolph had been warned of the need for a licence and had said that she was giving up breeding, yet she continued for a number of years. They kept no records of this lucrative business and they used other people’s names - without their permission - to sell the puppies. Lucinda Rolph was given a Confiscation Order of £601,700.60 and Victoria Rolph, a Confiscation Order of £14,950. The council was awarded costs of £20,000. The pair were each ordered to undertake 60 hours of unpaid work over a 12 month period and they were disqualified from breeding dogs for six years. www.winchester.gov.uk

Luxury items in Lymington
L
ymington. This colourful coastal town is an ancient seaport with a rich maritime history. Situated on the west bank of the Lymington River, on the edge of the Solent, this exclusive town is a major yachting centre with three marinas. The town began as an Anglo-Saxon village and is recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Lentune’. From the Middle Ages and up to the 19th century, Lymington was well-known for its salt making and from the early 19th century a thriving ship building industry. Much of the architecture you see today in Lymington is Georgian and Victorian, which adds to the exclusive feel. The High Street, which looks predominantly Georgian, is in fact made up of an eclectic mix of Georgian, Victorian, Art Deco with some traces of Medieval architecture. Our visit today takes us to see Giles Waite, owner of Watches of Distinction, and his wife, Elizangela Waite, owner of DiamondsR4ever, both luxurious, exclusive shops on Lymington High Street. Watches of Distinction has been a bastion of the High Street for more than 30 years, dealing in high end wristwatches. They specialise in sourcing and retailing new, pre-owned, rare and prestigious wrist watches from the worlds leading manufacturers including Rolex, Franck Muller, Cartier, and Breitling. Giles’ passion for watches has seen him establish an unsurpassed reputation over a 30 year period solely devoted to a high-quality professional trade in watches including Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Breitling etc. Giles’ extensive knowledge of watches has been sought for National and International magazine articles and through the media of Television. He is frequently commissioned to forensically examine watches to authenticate their provenance. From the outset, Giles has always offered a high quality service and his reliability and honesty has led him to be a foremost professional in his field. Purchasing or part exchanging a watch through Giles, you can be reassured that the watch you are buying is genuine and will come with a 12 months warranty. Whilst based in Lymington, Giles, sells watches worldwide having an extensive client base of new and repeat customers, including many well-known celebrities of music, television and film.
Not only selling watches, they can also service your watches for you. Being an established watch repair and restoration business, they offer a full watch repair and service facility and all repairs are undertaken using the latest equipment, technology, and best practice. They provide a service on most Swiss brands, specialising in Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Franck Muller and Breitling to name but a few. The repairers have benefited from training through not only qualification but years of knowledge with numerous premium Swiss watch houses and as such have gained a vast wealth of knowledge through not only training but years of experience within the industry. DiamondsR4ever was started after a conversation between Elizangela and Giles. Elizangela explains “My husband Giles has been dealing in high end wristwatches for more than 30 years. Prior to this he worked in the jewellery trade for many years establishing a reputation for working with fine and quality pieces for discerning clients. “We aim to combine his extensive knowledge and my passion. Together we will be able to accommodate our clients with guidance and advice along the exciting journey towards the acquisition of quality diamond jewellery and of course time pieces. Our aim is to make the experience of acquisition the first step towards the splendid pleasure of ownership.” For more information, you can call 01590 688641 (Watches of Distinction) or 01590 619084 (DiamondsR4ever) and visit their websites: www.watchesofdistinction.com and www.diamondsr4ever.uk, respectively.

DAVINA'S OF WARSASH
“MY 50TH BIRTHDAY BUCKET LIST AND OTHER RAMBLINGS” – BY LESLEY CHARLTON They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, and you certainly can’t tell just by looking at someone, but did you know there is an author and adventurer living close by and you can meet her in Lee-on-theSolent on Saturday 7th March! Lesley Charlton is the type of person who has a go at everything she is challenged to do. Her eyes light up whenever people say ‘you can’t do that’ and she seems to relish achieving more than most folk will ever do just by sheer guts and determination! Lesley has been known to thrown herself out of aircraft for sky dives and explore coral reefs when scuba diving around the world. More recently she has ridden the longest zip line in Europe; faced the unknown with a ghost walk through secret tunnels; and went to Marrakech for white water rafting in the High Atlas mountains sleeping under the stars each night. Will that do for starters?! It’s a great time for her to do the signing, at The Book Shop in High Street in Lee, as it falls in the week when World Book Day is celebrated which encourages others to read and have confidence. It’s also the day before International Women’s Day. As Lesley said: “I am very much looking forward to meeting people who have an interest in pursuing their dreams and taking up new challenges.” From two on-line reviews, by those who have already bought this exciting book, they say: ‘Loved it and so well written. I love the ramblings and of course the bucket list!’ (by KL). Also: ‘I received my copy and I am ignoring what I need to be doing and enjoying this book. The problem is that, when I put it down to do something and return, I find my husband is reading it. I should have bought two!’ (by JGC). The book can be posted if that is easier. The last of the challenges Lesley was set in her 50th year was to write a book about her Bucket List Challenges – I think she has done that in style! So, if you want inspiration to achieve everything you can in life, why not go along to meet Lesley on 7th March from 10:30-13:30. Lesley inherited her wanderlust from her father, Les Harris, who instilled in her the courage to follow her dreams - now let her help you to do that too! To do her bit to protect the Earth, Lesley is donating part of the book’s proceeds to The Travel Foundation https://www.thetravelfoundation.org.uk/ to recognise, as they say, that ‘if we do tourism right, destinations won’t just survive they’ll thrive’.

Bot ley A historic, charming village in the heart of Hampshire
B
otley was once described as the most delightful village in the world by famous journalist and radical politician William Cobbett, who called the place home between 1806 and 1820. It is hard to disagree with Mr Cobbett as you wander down the High Street, which has a unmistakable Olde Worlde, country village feel to the place, with pubs and eateries dotted along the High Street. The buildings, some dating back to the 17th Century, certainly transport you to a bygone era with their columns and sash windows. However, Botley has been around much longer than the 17th Century. A settlement first appeared during the 10th Century, when the Romans built a road from Chichester to Southampton, crossing the River Hamble just south of present-day Botley. The settlement was known in Saxon times as 'Bottaleah' ('Botta' was most likely a person, while 'Leah' is a Saxon word for a woodland clearing). Some time prior to the Norman conquest during the 11th Century, a gradual rise in sea level meant that travellers found the river easier to ford further north of the original Roman crossing. This new crossing place provided a new focal point for the village, which in 1086 was listed in the Domesday book as 'Botelie' and included two mills and had a population of less than 100. As previously mentioned, The Domesday Book in 1086 is the earliest documentation showing this site to have been used for milling. The site was part of the Manor of Botley and owned by Ralph de Mortimer, a French nobleman who fought on the side of King William I at the Battle of Hastings. The mills remained with the Mortimer family until the early part of the Fourteenth Century, when manor and mills were held on their behalf by a family who had taken on the name of Botley. During the English dissolution of the monasteries (1536 to 1539) the Manor of Botley and hence the mills was given to one Thomas Wriothesly who was a commissioner of Henry VIII and later was made Earl of Southampton. The third Earl died without a male heir and the
manor, including Botley Mills, passed by marriage to the Dukes of Portland. For about the next two hundred and fifty years, the Portlands leased the Mills to various tenant millers. Britain’s involvement in the wars of Europe in the second half of the Eighteen Century caused a significant increase in the population along the south coast of England. The demand for flour in the area rose with the increase in population and in 1757 plans were drawn up for the expansion of “His Grace the Duke of Portlands Mills at Botley.” The present centre building gets its appearance from this date. In 1838 the site was bought by W and J Clarke and the Mills. As well as grinding and trading cereals, the company also traded in coal, importing it in by barges which came up the River Hamble at high tide. Grain was also imported this way until 1914. For a short time between 1830 and 1848 paper was also manufactured on this site. In 1921 the Botley Flour Milling Company Limited was formed and by 1928 control of it was sold to the Appleby family and remains in their ownership today. Commercial white flour production continued at Botley until 1990 and stoneground flour until 1993, when for economic reasons production ceased. In the mid 19th Century, the climate made South Hampshire ideal for growing strawberries, with Botley becoming the centre for thriving trade of the fruit. In 1841, Botley railway station was opened by the London and Southampton Railway Company, becoming a major loading point for the seasonal strawberry traffic, with Botley forming the start of what is now known as the Strawberry Trail, a 15 mile footpath to Bursledon Railway Station, via Manor Farm Country Park. So, with a rich history and lots to see and do in Botley, what's keeping you from going?

JANE DEVONSHIRE TO BE GUEST CHEF AT THE GREYFRIAR, CHAWTON SATURDAY 14TH MARCH
It has been just over two years since Simon and Norma Brencher moved into The Greyfriar at Chawton, just opposite Jane Austen’s House and Museum. During this time they have transformed the pub restaurant with an extensive refurbishment, their imaginative approach to the food they serve and the Special Guest Chef and other food events that they regularly present. “Our special Guest Chef Events have been a popular choice for diners looking to experience new tastes, flavours and food combinations,” commented Simon Brencher. “We are absolutely delighted to be presenting MasterChef winner Jane Devonshire at our next event on Saturday 14th March. Jane and I also share a mutual connection with her MasterChef mentor, the renowned chef Atul Kochar, who I worked for at his London restaurant. It is great to be hosting such a talented chef as Jane, who also lives local to the Greyfriar.”
Since winning MasterChef in 2016 Jane has also worked with various renowned chefs including Marcus Wareing, Jason Atherton, and Michel Roux who commented: “Jane’s culinary talent is unquestionable.” Jane Devonshire’s recent book ‘Hassle Free Gluten Free’ will be the inspiration for the 5 course gluten free menu at The Greyfriar. For the last fourteen years Jane has only cooked gluten free food at home, since one of her children cannot tolerate gluten and was diagnosed with Coeliac disease. Over that time Jane has become one of the leading experts on how to create the best gluten free food. Simon Brencher has worked in the hospitality industry since 1991, working for Atul Kochar, Gordon Ramsey and other leading lights in the restaurant world. “It has been great to learn from so many renowned chefs,” continued Simon Brencher. “Every time we present a special Guest Chef event at the Greyfriar, I can see how our own chef ’s benefit from learning new techniques, food combinations and creating depth of flavour with their own food. I am sure that Jane will also inspire them!” Jane Devonshire will be signing copies of her book ‘Hassle Free Gluten Free’. The 5 course Special Guest Chef Event menu will be £45, with optional wine flight for those who wish to savour and experience wines that complement each course. Starts promptly at 7pm. To book call The Greyfriar on 01420 83841 or book online thegreyfriar.co.uk or opentable.co.uk

LOCAL CHOIR IN EXCITING PROJECT WITH PRESTIGIOUS LONDON ORCHESTRA With 200 years of musical experience between them, The Hanover Band and Southampton Philharmonic Choir are embarking on an exciting two-year collaboration. What was originally envisaged as being part of the Band’s ambitious Beethoven 250 project, the collaboration has evolved into a twoyear celebration of three of the most famous composers of their time. The Band and choir will perform together at Winchester Cathedral in the spring of each of the two years, and then in London, at St John’s Smith Square in the summer.
This year, the planned concerts are Bach Mass in B Minor at Winchester Cathedral on 14 March 2020 followed by a Mozart programme in London on 7 June 2020 comprising Symphony No 39 in E flat and the wonderful Requiem. The plans for 2021 are performances of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at both Winchester Cathedral and St John’s Smith Square. This is a wonderful opportunity for Southampton Philharmonic Choir, who are delighted to be able to perform some of the most well-known pieces of classical music with the extraordinary Hanover Band, one of Britain’s finest period instrument orchestras. The two organisations have worked together on a number of projects since 2008, when they joined forces for a performance of Handel’s

FEBRUARY 2020 TALK BY GILLIAN TAYLOR - MY GREENHOUSE YEAR If you have ever toyed with the idea of getting a greenhouse then Gillian’s talk will have been a great incentive to get cracking and for you to investigate the possibility of finding space for one in your own garden. There are many reasons why people buy greenhouses, maybe they just love taking cuttings, overwintering them and then planting them out in Spring. Maybe it is the thought of growing vegetables that you can pick and eat straight away, salad leaves for example and think delicious cherry tomatoes, they are so ‘moorish’ and probably more get eaten within the greenhouse than out! Peaches, melons and nectarines are all possible when you have a greenhouse. Gillian has quite a passion for Auriculas which are members of the primula family. They do need protection from winter wet which they will not tolerate. They can be moved out to a shady spot in the garden during March and April making sure they are given shading during the hottest part of the day. Take cuttings in July by removing main plant and shaking off all the compost which will expose the individual small plants. Carefully pull these apart, removing some leaves and pot up, preferably in John Innes compost No 2. These will flower the following year. Chrysanthemums overwinter really well in the Greenhouse. Simply dig up the plants and cut back to about 6” and put in either a tray or box with soil or compost and keep in the greenhouse until planting out in Spring when they will flower from July to October. Gillian over winters her Salvias which are half-hardy and plants them out in May. Dahlia stem cuttings can be taken in April/May and dependent upon the size of a single tuber you should be able to get between 5 and 10 plants from it. Agapanthus are also in the greenhouse over winter. SOME TIPS WHICH GILLIAN WANTED TO PASS ON ARE: • If using a mixture of perlite and compost, do use a face mask • Having a moisture meter in the greenhouse will prevent overwatering • Stop tomatoes at 4 trusses. • For the management of Chrysanthemums growing in the Greenhouse, to prevent the risk of rust, spray them once, around June/July with Bayer Fungus Fighter Spray (the one that is licensed for Box Blight). It really does work! Thank you Gillian for your wonderful talk and everyone was left talking about your fabulous greenhouse, what an achievement, a beautiful structure which obviously fits the bill perfectly. MEON VOICES – ‘NICE WORK’ GOING INTO SPRING CONCERT PROGRAMME! ‘Nice work if you can get it’ is just one of the uplifting songs in the Gershwin Medley that is the centrepiece of the Meon Voices’ Spring performances. The choir members are working hard to perfect an ambitious and varied programme, to keep its audiences entertained whatever their tastes. Alongside the Gershwin Medley are Anton Bruckner’s ‘Locus Iste’; from the Georgian era, ‘The Lass with the Delicate Air’; the Hebrew folk song Tumbalalaika and two of Gordon Sumner’s (Sting’s) most beautiful compositions, ‘Fields of Gold’ and ‘Fragile’. It’s not too late to join the Meon Voices. If you love to sing, but are worried about auditioning, you’ll be encouraged to hear you don’t need to audition. MEON VALLEY LIONS CHARITY FISHING FESTIVAL It was an extremely cold, wet and windy morning that greeted the Meon Valley Lions, as they turned out to organise the 45th Charity Ford Open Fishing Festival, on Weston Shore. The Lions Club has been involved with this event every January, without fail since 1996 and we’ve seen just about every weather condition known to man in that time. The cold and wet wasn’t going to put us off! In its heyday, over two hundred fishermen took part in this fishing festival and the pitches extended from Weston Shore in the west, right round to the Hamble in the east. The Ford transit plant has since closed, but Peter Oates and members of the Ford Sports and Social Club have worked hard with the support of the Transport and General Workers Union, to keep the competition alive. It is still a popular event amongst the sea-angling community and 79 braved the
If the Lions and fishermen found the conditions a challenging, it didn’t seem to dampen the enthusiasm but unfortunately no-one told the fish with the record catch for the day being just 1lb 3 ½ oz. There were some fabulous raffle prizes so it made it all worthwhile for those who attended. Here are the results and prize-winners: 1st prize (£400): Phil Steer; 2nd prize (£200): David Stewart; 3rd prize (£100): Kevin Warner; Heaviest fish (£154): Phil Steer; Heaviest bag – white zone (£77): Phil Steer; Heaviest bag – red zone (£77): Kevin Warner At the conclusion of the day, the event raised £891.02, a sum the Lions will now round up to £1,000 for donation to The Rose Road Association. It’s a tradition that we channel the proceeds of the Fishing Festival to this deserving charity and this year’s contribution takes the total collected through the fishing festival down the years, to in excess of £45,000. The cheque will be presented by the Lions President to representatives of The Rose Road Association at a ceremony in the Good Companions Public House, Eastleigh in March.

fistful of popular songs. They are a talented bunch so we hope many people will come along to listen and be entertained by them.
The 2020 Festival year got off to an exhilarating start on January 11th when 170 people enjoyed a brilliant adaptation of Wind In The Willows by one of our favourite theatre companies, Rain Or Shine. With clever scenery and speedy costume changes just four actors treated us to innumerable characters, with transportation across the stage by rowing boat, cart, car, train and canal barge! Ratty was suave and debonair, Mole timid, Badger wise and clever and Toad, well, as bumptious and endearing as could be.
Following She Stoops To Conquer, on Saturday June 20th we will be holding a Mad Hatter's Tea Party in the Palace grounds from 11.00am to 4.00pm accompanied by relaxed musical entertainment. A jazz band, solo singer, rock band, woodwind band, ukulele players and many others will perform throughout the day. Children will be entertained with face painting, story telling and drumming. There'll be more than just tea and strange cakes to eat and we promise not to put the dormouse in the teapot! This party is presented in conjunction with the St George Foundation charity (www.stgeorgefoundation.org.uk) to raise money to support and educate street children in Sierra Leone, a country rebuilding after the ravages of ebola.
We'll be welcoming Rain Or Shine back to start our midsummer Festival weekend on Friday June 19th for an evening performance of She Stoops To Conquer in the grounds of the Bishop's Waltham Palace. But before that there will be the annual Festival Concert which will take place in St Peter's Church on Saturday 9th May at 6.30pm. The singers will have spent the day with a professional choirmaster learning a

WELFARE AT MEON VALLEY LIONS CLUB More people and families are experiencing difficulties and hardship than ever before, the Meon Valley Lions Club may be able to help. We raise money throughout the year so we have Welfare funds available to help any local people or groups in need. In the past we have helped people in many different ways by providing washing machines, fridges, cookers, chairs, beds, help with school uniforms and specialist wheelchairs for the disabled etc. for those who need it. We support various clubs for the elderly, carers, those with dementia, the partially sighted and a number of youth groups. We also help local Meon Valley charities offering support for young families, those with disabilities or learning difficulties, those recovering from strokes or cancer, and many more examples. In short, if you are young or elderly, an individual or a group and you need help; feel free to get in touch via the ‘contact page’ on our website. We consider every request. Bishop's Waltham Festival is a not-for-profit organisation who have for many years been committed to bringing a range of cultural events to BW and to show-casing local talent. We are hugely grateful to the local businesses who support us financially. But we are not a huge organisation. We are in fact 5 people with an average physical age of over 70, but a much younger mental age! We would truly appreciate having a few more people, of any age, on board to help us organise our events and to bring fresh thoughts and ideas. EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL Within the property market, there is much written about when is the best time to buy and sell. Just like trading other investments you can try to play the market to your advantage, and this certainly applies with investment buyers, but when it comes to selling a home, it is often more about the right time for you rather than trying to judge the seasonal and economic market. There are inevitably peaks and troughs during every year but this doesn’t take into account your own reasons for wanting to sell.
WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO SELL? This is a question I am often asked and the straightforward answer is, the right time to sell is when it’s the right time for you.
So, be clear as to what you want to achieve and then plan accordingly. Generally, if you are selling you are likely to be buying at the same time, so any fluctuations in the market can be offset. Once you have made the decision to sell then timings around what you are trying to achieve are important. Plan ahead and allow plenty of time to speak to the experts. Mortgage Brokers, Accountants, Solicitors and, of course, Property Agents all have an important part

to play in the process. They will be able to provide clarity where needed and not just in relation to values, taxes or lenders but processes, timings and legislation. Having worked in the industry in the South of England for almost 20 years, one thing I am confident of is that buyers choose locations for schooling, work, retirement, access and natural beauty and fortunately our region offers the very best. If now is the right time for you, then now is the time to get the ball rolling and contact a property expert you can trust. Kate Porter, Head of Sales, The Country House Company

NEW MUSIC MAKERS STRIKE GOLD! This year the New Music Makers choir from Hedge End celebrate it’s 50th year of existence. Their Golden Year has had a fabulous start as members of the choir have recently presented cheques to the grand total of £1408.00 to Naomi House and Countess Mountbatten Hospice charities. This money was raised over a very busy and successful Christmas Season with many appearances across the local community as well as their own sell out concerts. The choir was formally established in 1970 and as well as music making together through the years, thousands of pounds have been raised for charity.
There is some evidence that suggests that girls get better academic results in a singlesex environment, but for me by far the most compelling advantage of a girls’ school is simply that in a single sex environment it is easier to be yourself. Girls can choose how to behave without having to consider whether it is appropriately feminine. It is no accident that girls’ schools have higher percentages of girls studying subjects considered ‘male’ such as maths or science. Indeed, in some co-ed schools not a single girl studies physics A level. At St Swithun’s, maths and science are all popular A level subjects. Which doesn’t mean that girls have to study science at St Swithun’s, but simply that if they do that is normal and
if they don’t that is also normal. Research reveals that girls also adapt their behaviour outside the classroom to societal expectations. For example, they come to believe that they shouldn’t apply for jobs unless they match 100% of the job description, but girls educated in single-sex schools are more likely to be risk takers in educational and professional terms. At St Swithun’s, girls grow up to be who they want to be without being subjected to tired stereotypes about what girls should and shouldn’t do. Jane Gandee, headmistress of St Swithun’s School, Winchester.
Founder member Tom Rodaway said, “We started with songs from ‘Joseph’s Technicolour Dreamcoat’ and since then have developed a comprehensive music library of contemporary songs.” Current chairperson Lin Kellaway added, “We enjoy our singing but also work hard preparing for performances so that they are special events for those who attend. We are always looking to bring in new members and anyone who is interested should get in touch.” Throughout 2020 the choir are holding various events including their Golden Concert on Saturday 6th June. This will be a special concert to celebrate their 50 years so make sure you get your tickets early. Their website: www.newmusicmakers.com has contact and performance details.

PROFESSIONAL assurance to their detriment, but where the promise was not kept, or is then contradicted by the contents of the final Will. Even if none of the above claims are available, it may still be possible to apply to the Court for the Will to be rectified if it can be shown that the Will fails to reflect the deceased’s intentions, for example as a consequence of a clerical error, or where there was a failure by the person who drafted the Will to understand what the deceased intended, or to follow their specific instructions.
Professional “EVEN WITH THE BEST WILL IN THE WORLD…” CHALLENGING WILLS AND MAKING CLAIMS AGAINST ESTATES Patrick Jenkins, Partner and Head of Litigation at MacDonald Oates Solicitors, considers some of the issues which can arise where no Will, or a Will that proves to be deficient, has been prepared and why it is important to have an up-to-date and properly executed document. The starting point is that it is always advisable to have a Will in place. Without one, the law prescribes who may deal with the deceased’s affairs and who should inherit their estate. The Will should also be kept up to date and be reviewed periodically, but especially if you have had important changes in your life, such as starting or ending a relationship, starting a family or if you find yourself in a significantly different financial position for whatever reason. CHALLENGES TO A WILL Commonly, Wills are disputed where they have not been properly executed (such as not having been signed, or correctly witnessed). A Will may also be challenged if the person making the Will did not have the mental capacity to make it, or if they did not understand the full terms and effect of their Will, the extent of the property within their
estate or the claims to which they ought to give effect. There are also cases where a third party has exerted pressure on the deceased and where that coercion amounts to actual ‘undue influence’ on the deceased to make a particular Will. Sometimes, it may even be possible to prove that the Will has been forged or is the result of a fraud. However, challenges to a Will can be expensive and there is a common misconception that the costs will be paid out of the estate, which is not always the case. The costs of having a valid, up-to-date Will in place are well worth paying, to at least try and reduce the likelihood of the Will being challenged. OTHER CLAIMS As well as challenging the validity of the Will itself, even where the Will is valid it may still be possible in certain circumstances to make a claim if it does not provide an individual with reasonable financial provision, in which case a claim may be made under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. There are strict timelimits for bringing such claims and advice should be taken promptly by anyone who thinks they may have a claim. It may also be possible to bring a claim if someone can show that, for example, they were promised a share of some property by the deceased and that they relied on that
Where problems arise as a result of the negligence of the Will draftsman then anyone losing out may also have a professional negligence claim. All cases are fact specific and specialist legal advice should be sought at the earliest opportunity. Patrick Jenkins is a Member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS), which is a specialist body for lawyers practising in contentious trust and probate work and he has considerable experience of dealing with these types of claims.
