Watching The Detectives © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2022
WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM
“You there?” Himself called from the study. “In the kitchen, cooking dinner and watching the detectives.” She replied. “Line of Duty?” she heard the interested tone in his voice; a bit of a fan, he had the complete box set. “Aussie Gold Hunters.” “Is that new? What’s the plot?” his curiosity piqued, he appeared in the doorway. “People in the Australian outback, metal detecting for nuggets of gold. Or, as they often call them, ‘little rippers’.” “Good grief.” He sounded horrified. “Out there with all those snakes, spiders and sun! And actually, they’re called ‘detectorists’, not ‘detectives’.” He paused and continued. “Um, do you like the programme? You know, them going out with their metal detectors and finding stuff ?” He was watching her closely, keenly. She sensed an ambush. “You’ve bought one, haven’t you?” she surmised. Himself looked momentarily wrong footed, but countered with “I thought it might make a good birthday present.” “Who for? Not me, I hope,” remembering her disappointment when an uncle bought her an airfix glider kit for her twelfth birthday, then locked himself away all day making it. Before crashing it on its maiden flight. “No. It’s for me.” He admitted. “From the dogs.” He added, as something of an afterthought. The spaniels looked up at the mention of the word ‘dogs’ and thumped their tails on the floor. “They do look happy with their purchase and actually, I think it would be fun. But won’t we need permission to roam about randomly digging holes on people’s land.” Himself’s face lit up “Indeed – but not on some beaches! I thought we could do a little detecting when we take the dogs to the coast for a walk.” (More enthusiastic tail thumping.) So the following weekend found them at the sea side, where the detector did just what it said on the box. When it located something metallic in the sand, it beeped. And Himself did something similar. “*Beep* rubbish, *Beep* waste of effort” he muttered as he examined the bottle top/tent peg/battery he’d just laboriously dug up. Every so often, someone would
6
approach and ask “Found any gold?” Himself would shake his head morosely and carry on, as they wished him luck. A sit on the sand and a coffee break, then the detecting reconvened with a 2p piece and a fishing weight. Until, finally.. “Good signal?” Himself’s body language told her that this one was different. He looked up with the light of fanaticism in his eyes, before they both dropped to their knees to dig. Spotting them, the spaniels returned from the surf. Determined to help, they stuck their snouts in the hole before shaking seawater in every direction. “Listen,” Himself wiped his glasses and paused in his shovelling. Failing to dodge a sandy canine kiss he whispered “if it’s something really valuable, we shouldn’t draw attention to ourselves. You’ve seen how people watch us when we’re just digging up rubbish. If they see we’ve found gold, when we come back next time, we won’t be able to move for other detectorists!” He said dramatically. She looked furtively around, expecting an audience of onlookers. No-one was paying the slightest attention to them. “OK..” She’d been mentally choreographing her ‘gold dance’, but shelving that, she imagined hordes of people marching up and down the beach. Like lockdown, but with more digging. And disappointment. “So, we need to act nonchalantly - and we ought to have a code.” He was smiling the smile that indicated his inner child had surfaced. “If it’s a gold coin, we say ‘Jack Sparrow’. And if it’s a gold watch, we say ‘White Rabbit.” Bonkers. She liked it. Joining in, her inner Tolkien surfaced “And if it’s a gold ring, we say ‘my precious’. And don’t forget that nuggets are ‘little rippers’.” The ring they eventually extracted from the deep, water and spaniel-nose-filled hole generated a moment of excitement and a passably creepy Gollum impersonation. Closer inspection revealed it was just gold plated non-precious metal. They sighed and kicked sand back into their excavations, consoled that they’d all had plenty of exercise and fresh air. Later, back at home, two tired dogs in their bed – their paws twitching in slumber, sand still clinging to their fur. “You there?” Himself called from the study. “In the kitchen, cooking dinner and watching the detectives.” She replied. “Aussie Gold Hunters?” she heard the interested tone in his voice and smiled. No, she thought, been there, done that. “Line of Duty...”

GARDEN / COMMUNITY Meon Valley Lions News Swanmore Village Fete Preparations are going well for our annual fete held in the Swanmore Recreation Ground. This year, Lions’ Swanmore Fete is on Saturday 9th July 2022 – book the date in your diary now. We’re keeping all your regular favourites and following the huge success of 2019 we are going to host a dog show again, during the course of the afternoon. We’re not going to recreate Crufts, but hope to have a bit of fun and a chance for local dog-owners to show off their pet’s best attributes. There will be numerous prizes up for grabs for the best pooches in various classes. During the next few weeks, more details will be published on our Fete website page plus there will be social media postings to keep you updated on developments. The Lions’ Swanmore fete takes a lot of time and effort to plan and we need dozens of people to help us make the event work on the day. If you can volunteer for a few hours setting up the field, manning the gate or running a stall, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us your details via the contact us page on the website or email: info@ meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk Lions helping other organisations Meon Valley Lions Club always take an interest what other groups in the Meon Valley are doing to help the needy. To that end one of our team went along to see what the Meon Valley Repair Cafe were up to. The idea is to encourage recycling by returning inoperable home appliances to full use and prevent them being thrown away. Also, for those who cannot afford a replacement, give them something that works again. The work is carried out at no charge, except for replacement parts required, by a team of enthusiastic volunteers. They operate from the Methodist Church in Waltham Chase whose members originally came up with the idea and developed it following the nationwide repair cafe model. Part of the ongoing development, when the weather gets better, is to have a covered area out in the car park to repair bikes. This is how we got to hear of them. The repair cafe team had contacted Lions to see if we could help with a gazebo to cover the bike repair area. We are working with them on this. Lions see the repair cafe as a great initiative to help the local community. They hold their repair sessions on the first Saturday of every month at the Methodist church in Waltham Chase. Go along and meet the team if you have something that needs fixing. Not just appliances, but broken chairs, sewing machines that need setting . They will have a go at anything really. Hampshire business records family voices
Make a recording of your voice for your relatives and your family tree. This simple idea has formed the basis of a new Hampshire business (in Locks Heath), which provides this helpful service. “The idea arose when a number of my relatives sadly passed away,” explains co-founder Caroline Saunders. “I miss their unique voices, accents and mannerisms. It would have been a great comfort to me in my grief if I could hear those voices once again. The only recording I have of my late uncle is a poor quality answerphone message. I don’t have any record of my late dad’s voice. If only we had started this service sooner.” Audio recordings are usually no longer than one hour and are conducted by a experienced journalist, Caroline’s husband, Tim, who puts interviewees at ease and knows all the right questions to ask. Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd April Murdered to Death - West Meon Theatre In West Meon Village Hall. This hilarious spoof of the traditional Agatha Christie whodunnit is set in a country manor house in the 1930s. The assembled guests, suspects and potential victims are guaranteed to delight, and they include Bunting the butler, an English colonel with the prerequisite stiff upper lip, a shady French art dealer and his moll, a bumbling police inspector and a well-meaning local sleuth who seems to attract murder wherever she goes. They all get caught up in the side-splitting antics which follow the mysterious death of the owner of the house. It soon becomes clear that the murderer isn’t finished yet, but will that person be unmasked before everyone else meets their doom? The play is directed by Becky James, well known to our audiences for the many roles she has played in previous productions. Tickets, £11 or £10 for a group of four, are now on sale, and full details can be found on our website: www.westmeontheatre.co.uk We look forward to seeing you there. The ambitious programme has folk songs from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, and a Jubilee Hymn written for Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 by choir leader Solveig Harris’ mother, Shirley Rimes. Shirley added a verse in 2002 for the Golden Jubilee and now Solveig herself has added a third verse to honour the Platinum celebrations. There is something for everyone, with Will Todd’s haunting ‘Stay With Me Lord’; thoughtful contemporary classics from Leonard Cohen and Gordon Sumner (Sting of The Police), and uplifting jollity with Guy Turner’s Tequila Samba and more Gershwin favourites. It’ll be a great Saturday night of entertainment at 7.30 p.m. on April 23rd 2022. There will be refreshments providing Covid regulations allow them, and there is no need to book as it’s not a ticketed event, and everyone is welcome – as your community choir, it belongs to you! There will be an opportunity to thank the choirs by leaving a donation for St Peter's Church's chosen charities. COMMUNITY / EDUCATION Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club News
Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis On Saturday 5th of March, we did a collection outside Sainsbury’s Bishop’s Waltham to raise money for the humanitarian efforts being put in place to help those displaced by the crisis in Ukraine. Thanks to the amazing generosity of you all, in just a few hours we raised nearly £1,500. Because Rotary is not a first response Charity, the money will be used to support Charities linked directly with Rotary to enable them to purchase goods and support local areas receiving displaced persons. Wessex Heartbeat Back in 1992 Rotary rose to the challenge of helping the newly formed Wessex Heartbeat charity, which had been set up to support people of all ages and their families living with cardiac conditions in the Wessex area, which includes the Channel Islands. At that time, it was decided that a home from home for the relatives of those undergoing treatment was needed near to Southampton General Hospital and this is where Rotary stepped in and raised the money to purchase a property opposite the A&E entrance. Once again Wessex Heartbeat has come to Rotary in our district and we are rising to the challenge which, locally, means we have made a pledge to give a regular donation of £500 over the next 3 years along with many other local clubs as major refurbishment is now required. When originally opened the house was named Rotary Heartbeat House, but the Rotary connection has been lost over the years, but this connection is now well and truly being reinstated. Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Carnival, Family Fun Day, Music & Food, Plus Motorcade & Dog Show - Saturday 11th June 2022 We are back after 2 years it is so exciting to be able to organize the Carnival again. A slightly different day as no procession but there will be a great motorcade of Fabulous Vintage & classic cars & bikes from 12noon in the High Street on the day leading to Hoe Road where a great Family Fun Day with Live Music & Food will commence from 12.30pm along with the ever-popular Dog Show. A big Thank You to our Main Carnival Sponsors WHITE & GUARD, Plus Solent Design Publishing Ltd for sponsoring our Programme. If you would like to join the Motorcade of vintage & classic cars, please contact pete.yeoman@bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk If you would like to book a stall or for further information, please contact debbie.walker@bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk or our website www.bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk and we are very keen to hear from the following:- Local Craft Small businesses, Face painting, plus Vegan & Vegetarian Hot Food Vendors. All money raised from the day goes to supporting Local, National and International Charities and good causes. New members President Mandy Tourle had the pleasure of welcoming 2 new members at the end of February, when Mark Brenton and Tony Cummins decided to join our merry bunch and we warmly welcome them to the wider Rotary family.

WELLBEING
Changing Gear with My Little Sudocrem Developed in Dublin all the way back in 1931, our favourite hero cream has been soothing families for 90 years. And now for all of us choosing two wheels over four wheels, My Little Sudocrem is a portable 22g size pot, to sootheon-the-go. The pandemic has seen a 45% leap in bicycle sales totalling a whopping £1 billion, according to Forbes*. An extra 1 million adults hit the cycle lane and this gear-shift trend is set to continue as with the UK’s new-found love of the outdoors. The UK has also been inspired to jump into the saddle by the amazing achievements of our most successful female Paralympian, Dame Sarah Storey, who says, “Cycling with my family brings me so much joy and I’d really love for more families to benefit from the thrill of being out on bikes together. Cycling is such an amazing feeling and it’s a really fun way of getting around. Apart from the obvious health benefits of getting out in the fresh air and being physically active, cycling is a great way to build resilience and promote independence.” My Little Sudocrem joined the family in 2018 and is ready to jump into any cycling kit to soothe the cyclist’s exposed skin. It’s been specifically designed by Sudocrem for soothing and preventative use. Its clinically-proven formulation soothes and protects delicate skin, forming a barrier against irritants and allowing the skin to maintain its natural and healthy condition. It’s ready to help calm red or irritated areas of skin, to soothe dry patches, cuts and scrapes. It’s discreet and travel-friendly because while the traditional grey 400g pot is iconic and a
20
staple in any household cabinet, we’re not going to be strapping it to the handlebars! Nick Lang, Head of UK & IE OTC marketing at Sudocrem says, “We’ve noticed that My Little Sudocrem has become popular amongst cyclists, especially to soothe ‘cyclist’s bum’. Cycling is a healthy activity that the whole family can enjoy from riding on the back of mum or dad’s bike, to stabilisers, all the way through to adulthood.” It is recommended that My Little Sudocrem is applied as frequently as required, to make the most of its soothing and healing properties, which includes zinc oxide which helps to reduce loss of fluid from the skin and protects against irritants and dry skin. Lanolin helps to soften the skin, along with lavender extract, which is renowned for its calming and restorative properties.
So, with the great British summer fast approaching, it’s time to get on yer bike and take your little pot of Sudocrem on your next big adventure! * Forbes April 21 2021 – The Bicycle Association Building On The Boom: The UK Cycling Market in 2020 and Beyond Report

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Earl Grey and Clementine Easter Hot Cross Bun Trifle One of my favorite Easter treats, Michelin chef Heston Blumethal’s Earl Grey and clementine hot cross buns, delicious toasted and topped with lashings of butter. Bursting with the same flavour combo of tangy clementines and smoky bergamot from the tea, and with sweet Madeira to add a touch of class, my ultimate Easter trifle is both delicious and sophisticated and is the perfect way to end your holiday feast.
For the trifle
A glass footed trifle bowl is best showing off all of the yummy layers of buns, fruit, custard, curd and cream.
Ingredients
100ml boiling water 3 Earl Grey teabags 100ml of sweet Madeira wine 5 hot cross buns gently toasted and torn roughly into one inch cubes 50g blanched, roasted and roughly chopped 600ml double cream 500ml ready-made custard
For the candied clementines
200gms caster sugar 2 clementines ( make sure the skins are tight and the fruit fresh) halved and cut into thin rounds.
For the clementine and lemon curd 130gms unsalted butter cut into cubes Grated zest and juice of three clementines Grated zest and juice of two small lemons 120gms caster sugar 1 medium free range egg, plus two yolks.
24
Method
1 Infuse the tea bags in the boiling water and add the Madeira. Leave to infuse for one hour. Make the candied oranges. This is easier to do than you might think and the result is an intense syrupy flavoured clementine for the trifle and the topping. Pour 300ml water into a pan with the caster sugar and bring to the boil. Add the clementine slices, then turn down to a medium heat and simmer for 50 minutes until softened and syrupy. Leave to cool. 2 Make the fruit curd. Heat 30g of the butter until bubbling, golden and smelling nutty. Remove from the heat, quickly adding the rest of the butter with the clementine and lemon juice and sugar. Whisk until smooth. Add the egg and the yolks and beat well. Return the pan to low heat and whisk continuously for ten minutes until you have a thick, creamy curd. Stir in the zests and leave to cool. 3 Layering the trifle…..this is the fun part! Remove the tea bags from the Madeira and water and discard. Add the syrup from the candied clementines, leaving a little remaining with the fruit. Put the buns in the base of the trifle dish spooning over all the infused liquid. Arrange over top most of the clementine slices. Meanwhile using either electric mixer or balloon whisk, whip the cream to soft holding peaks. Layer the curd over the buns and clementines and then top with the custard and finally the cream. Sprinkle the top with the toasted hazlenuts and the remaining clementine slices with the syrup.

COMMUNITY / MOTORING Fareham Rotarians fundraise for clean water In 2019 the Rotary Club of Fareham discussed what international project it wanted to fund and felt it was important to support a community in one of the poorest parts of the world. We wanted them to have accessible fresh water which would aid health & food production. In Africa up to 85% of rainwater is lost, being washed out to sea. The decision was made to raise enough funds to enable the building of a Sand Dam in Kenya. A Sand Dam is a low-cost form of harvesting rainwater, storing millions of litres of fresh water, and lasts for over 50 years.

WE HAVE MOVED, NOW AT BRAMDEAN GARAGE A272 BRAMDEAN AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE LACK OF AVAILABLE CARS BELOW, NOW WOULD BE A FANTASTIC TIME TO SELL ANY CAR NOT BEING USED AND GET A GREAT PRICE FOR IT.
South East Kenya is a tough place to live with more than 840,000 people living below the national poverty line. Most are rural farmers who depend on rain-fed agriculture to survive. Now they can have that rainwater thanks to our fundraising and inspiring other clubs to contribute to its success.
The following cars have been carefully selected because of their low mileage, excellent condition and service history.

The project motivated our members who, supported by the Rotary Clubs of Whiteley and Portsmouth & Southsea, have raised in excess of £13,000 (50% of the final cost of the dam), and the Sand Dam is now complete.’ The Club were also successful in obtaining a Rotary Global Grant which is helping to fund 2 further dams. The Wisuka Sand Dam is complete and the photographs enclosed show the finished result and some of the local people at the dam which is helping them so much. Where's Henry?
A fun historic trail in the centre of Bishop’s Waltham for children of primary school age.
Collect a trail leaflet from Sweet Corner or Best Wishes between Monday 16th-22nd April 2022 then walk around the town centre to spot the Henry VIII models in the High Street shops.
Henry VIII Models These fabulous models have been knitted and crocheted by local craftspeople for Sat 26th February Sat 23rd April our use. Where's Henry Bishop's Waltham. The task is to find 20 models of Henry VIII. They are hidden in 20 different shop windows in the High Street and surrounding streets. Each one has a number on it. When you have found one, go into the shop and tell the shopkeeper which number Henry you have found. They will then give you a numbered quiz question. You need to fill in the trail leaflet with the name of the shop you found each Henry in and the letter for the correct answer to the quiz question. Take the leaflet home if you like, so you can look up your books or online to find the right answers. Sat 19th to Fri 25th February
and
Sat 16th to Fri 22nd April
Then come to meet Henry VIII and his entourage in person in the High Street between 10.00am and 11.30am
of Aragon. They were Bella age 10, James, age 7 and Rueben age 4 (with a bit of help from his big sister Olivia age 8). The event was a great success with the children, their parents, grandparents, and the shops all enjoying it. Many people commented on what a lovely activity it had been. Sue Thomson, one of the participants said: “We had a wonderful day on Wednesday doing the Henry VIII trail, popping back on Thursday to finish it off. What fun it was! Our 2 granddaughters, aged 9 and 6, loved finding all those beautifully knitted Henrys and then popping int the shops for their questions. All the shopkeepers were so lovely and welcoming. We also enjoyed the Tudor music blasting from the speakers and following the procession on the Saturday. A fabulous few days”.

The completed trail leaflet needs to be handed in at either Sweet Corner or Best Wishes by 4.00pm on Friday 22nd April. All correct answers will be entered into a prize draw for free entry into Henry VIII in Bishop's Waltham: A Tudor Experience on 2nd/3rd July. The prizes will be drawn by Henry VIII himself on Saturday 23rd April at 11.00am in St Georges Square. Come along to the High Street from 10am and see Henry VII and his entourage parade through the town. You can even say hello to our royal visitor!
Half Term Antics with Henry VIII in Bishop’s Waltham February half-term saw the main shopping area of Bishop’s Waltham full of families undertaking the Where’s Henry? Trail. The trail, part of the town’s 2022 events commemorating the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s visit to Bishop’s Waltham, was aimed at primary school children. They were challenged to find the 20 knitted and crocheted models of Henry VIII that were on display in the town’s shop windows. For each model found, the children were given a quiz question they had to answer about Henry VIII and life in Tudor times. All leaflets with correct answers were then put into a draw, with 3 lucky families winning 2 adult tickets to the Tudor Experience event that will take place in the Bishop’s Waltham Palace Grounds on 2/3 July 2022. The week’s trail ended on Saturday 26th with a Parade of Henry VIII and his entourage through the High Street accompanied by Tudor music. The 3 lucky children whose leaflets were picked out in the draw were congratulated by Henry VIII and his wife Catherine

CADG Strippers get it off! Being a successful Drama Group means that both Players and Audiences demand good class music and scenery. With the latter in mind -we already have the former- CADG had an eventful and rewarding weekend clearing out their store. One lesson was learnt! Don’t just slap paint and layers of wallpaper over wooden scenery!! Hence a select ‘army’ of strippers -and slappers- was needed to scrape the scenery back to woodgrain, and ready for future use. Well, what were you thinking??
Recently we have welcomed new members and have made valuable contacts with a professionally trained producer and an illustrator. The results have already spoken for themselves, with our Spring production, ‘Love Me Slender’. Our Autumn production will be “ Secondary Cause of Death”, by Peter Gordon, a superb play with many twists and turns, a bit of comedy and plenty of murders -and it’s all based on a Murder, Mystery Weekend!!! Well, what would you expect??? Play reading will take place in May with Auditions before the Summer break. For Spring 2023, we anticipate a huge hit with the ever popular and hilarious “Boeing Boeing”. Surely there has never been a better time to join CADG. www.curdridgedrama.co.uk
