Bespoke Kitchen Fitting & Kitchen Makeovers Before
After
Beautiful Made-To-Measure Kitchens This is the second time we have used Happy Kitchens and once again we are over the moon with the results! For our latest project, in a much bigger kitchen than previously, Ben spent time with us sharing ideas for how we could make better use of the space, new design ideas to modernise and make an impact whilst still maintaining the storage space we need with an expanding family. He also had suggestions on how to reduce costs by making layout changes. The finished layout is fantastic, looks amazing and works so much better than the old design. Plus it’s left us with more storage than we know what to do with! Bonus! We won’t hesitate to continue to recommend Happy Kitchens to anyone looking for a new kitchen. Highly recommend!
Anna Cutler
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

A Spoonful of Sugar © Lucia Foster-Found 2022 www.luciafosterfound.com
“HFSS. What do you think it means?” Himself was frowning. It sounded familiar. “Is it a bank? No, wait, it’s that thing you get before a web address – I don’t know what it stands for.” She wasn’t being much help. “No.. I don’t think it is.” He shook his head. “Isn’t that htpp something? But I don’t know what that stands for either, although I’ve got a feeling that the P might be for protocol?” They were sat in their car outside the Cinema. Having arrived very early to be able to park outside (it was raining), both were consulting their phones to pass the time before the film started. She looked it up. “HFSS stands for High in Fat, Salt and Sugar. Why?” Himself looked resigned. “I thought as much.” She felt for him. Post-surgery he was intent on shedding some weight, but he looked so sad when, valiantly, he tried to make more healthy choices when they went out. To be fair, the recent publishing of calories on menus was quite helpful, in a deeply depressing way. One frightened look at the dessert menu and they’d stopped eating puddings altogether. “I wondered what these red markings were that seem to have suddenly appeared on food packaging.” He said. She was pretty sure the traffic light system had been there a while, but perhaps he’d been in denial, so she explained. “It gives a separate colour for each group; fat, saturates, sugar and salt. Green means low levels; ‘fill your boots’, I suppose. Amber is medium; ‘pause for thought, shall I, shan’t I’? And well, red is…” “Red is ‘step away from the pain au chocolat’.” He sighed. “What are you looking at?” Curious, she leaned across as he tilted the screen of his phone towards her. Oh dear. Yes – so many different types of pastry, all clustered enticingly on one Ocado page. “These are a few of my favourite things’ as the song goes.” He said, in a wistful tone. Hot water crust was well represented, together with puff, short, flaky and choux. It was like Himself’s greatest hits compilation of pies, pasties, turnovers and eclairs – poor darling.. “Look, it’s not entirely a case of cease and desist - it’s more… all things in moderation.” She said consolingly as Himself gave the delicious pictures one more look of longing before sighing and

switching off his phone and remarking. “Seems we’ve come a long way since Elizabethans blackened their teeth – it was actually fashionable to look as if you ate too much sugar. How things have changed.” “Let’s hope that doesn’t come back on trend; black teeth and ruffs.” She shuddered. “Like leg warmers and court shoes. Disastrous.” “Hey - I bet there aren’t many children’s films these days advocating spoonfuls of sugar to help the medicine go down.” He commented. “Probably not – although I think the meaning was more metaphorical than monosaccharide.” She reasoned - and hummed it in her head. “Bread and dripping.” He announced. “There’s another thing.” “Yep. Staple Sunday night tea of my childhood.” She agreed, and salivated. Bet that would flash up a red light if you could buy it in the shops. Shame. So delicious. Her stomach rumbled. As they sat there fantasising about food, it occurred to her that they should have eaten before going to the Cinema. “Come on, let’s go in. We can have some flatbread and hummus or something.” Himself looked momentarily excited, then asked. “Is it HFSS?” “Who knows? It won’t come in a packet, so we’ll have no idea.” She said cheerily, whilst privately wondering if flatbread and hummus was the 21 Century’s answer to bread and dripping. “Either way, it will stop us obsessing about food.” Sat in the comfort and semi-darkness of the movie theatre, they finished their snacks. The endless trailers were coming to an end; she’d now seen all the best bits of half a dozen films. Also annoyingly, ‘the medicine go down, the medicine go dowwwwn’, was still chirping away in her head as she got up from the plush sofa they had commandeered. “I’m just going to nip to the loo. Want anything else whilst I’m out there?” She asked. “Coffee please, but no sugar..” “Not even a spoonful?” Himself assumed a beatific expression of almost angelic proportions as he looked up at her. “No thank you. I believe the phrase is ‘I’m sweet enough already’.” And, she considered, as she smiled down at him, he was right.

GARDEN / COMMUNITY
Planning the Garden
to the house beautifully. A rural setting suggests a naturalistic or cottage style planting, or urban space could go modern. You could compliment this in the material you choose for your pots or other garden décor. A formal style is traditionally achieved by Symmetrical planting, using straight lines that mirror each other, and this is easily replicated on a small scale with clever use of statement plants to punctuate. Asymmetry, with the use of curvilinear planting, provides a more relaxed feel. Think about Balance to maintain proportion (a tall shrub might be offset by a bench, or a water feature, for example). Simplicity – where less is more. Fewer plants (or pots or materials) in a similar family or colour group together cause a greater impact that many different plants dotted about the place.
Hello, Plant Lovers! In the last edition of the Forum, we explored ‘Right Plant, Right Place’. You are probably looking forward to your local Summer Plant Fair. But wait! Whether it be the sensory joy they induce, or the wildlife that they attract that you love about plants – take a moment to consider these 6 Design Principles. Harmony: What feeling does your space give you? Do you feel calm or elegant, playful or quirky? This is the ‘Spirit of the Place’. The principle of Cohesion helps us connect the growing space
Rotary Club of Fareham equips Squadron of puppies! The Rotary Club of Fareham does amazing things for charities and communities in this country and abroad but, what fun, they have now equipped one complete squadron of cadet puppies for Hounds for Heroes! This Hampshire based charity, Hounds for Heroes, provides specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled people of both the UK Armed Forces and the Emergency Services. They aim to provide help and practical support leading to an enhanced quality of life. As Norman Chapman, President of the Club, said “I discovered there are over 900,000 injured service people in the UK and felt we could help by providing equipment for the dogs trained by this charity. We’ve donated funds for crates, bedding, high-visibility canine jackets, dog beds, kit bags and all the other equipment needed for one squadron of puppies.” Over this presidential year the Club has raised £3,353.21 for Hounds for Heroes and also gives ongoing support for Global Sight

Rhythm / Repetition is similar – the designer’s trick of using groups of 3 to 5 plants in regular spacing about the site is very effective in making a place seem ‘put together.’ Divide perennials to multiply plants cheaply. A nod to these principles will elevate your planting space to a whole new level. Next Time: Plant selection! By: Patti Carter. Mum, Dr & RHS student. Share your thoughts @ motherspluckingposies or motherspluckingposies@gmail.com Solutions, a charity that raises awareness and funds to combat blindness and cataracts in the developing world. Members met one of the puppies (now quite large!) when the Club had dinner at Rotarian Antonio’s Spanish restaurant in Fareham when we presented our final cheque to the charity. Founder of the charity, Allen Parton, spoke at the event and said “Every single penny that the charity receives has such a major impact on our ability to place life enhancing assistance dogs with our disabled and injured services personnel as successfully as we do. To have had the support of the Rotary Club of Fareham has been extremely humbling. Our charity motto "together we can" takes on such a huge poignancy at moments like this, when such caring organisations stand shoulder to shoulder with us on our mission. The monies raised will go to equipping one of our squadrons of cadets (puppies) with all their equipment and kit needed during their puppy training which lasts up to 14 months.” If you're interested in joining Rotary Club of Fareham to use your time, talents, professional skills and energy to improve the lives of people in your local community then please contact us. Joyful Jubilee Celebration at Rotary Wheel House On Saturday, 3rd June, thirty guests from the Fareham based charity ‘The Friday Night Club’ were invited to the Wheel House for a celebratory tea. Rotarians Mike Hurley, Rebecca Traynor and other Club members provided refreshments including a cream tea. It was a special community event to ensure our guests had a superb Jubilee experience. Also in attendance were Councillor Katrina Trott (who is a Trustee of the Friday Night Club) and two visitors from France (Thierry and Anna) who were in Fareham as part of the Vannes visiting team. ‘The Friday Night Club’ is a charity that aims to improve the wellbeing of individuals with a learning difficulty (who may or may not have a mental health issue) through achievable activities in their community. It meets at the Scout Hut in Highlands Road, Fareham, but some activities are also available on other days of the week, run by volunteers and support staff. From the very beginning of our event, there was an air of excitement in the Rotary Club of Fareham’s Wheel House facility at Hill Head the large pink Jubilee themed cakes (thanks to Tesco Fareham) were particularly popular. There was live music, singing and dancing and the Wheel House was decorated in Jubilee themed displays. Our guests were happy and excited to be part of this community event and ‘The Friday Night Club’ said that a brilliant afternoon was had by all. Councillor Katrina Trott thanked the Rotary Club of Fareham for holding the event and said she was proud to be able to bring her French visitors who could see that Fareham was a caring community. The Rotary Club of Fareham is a volunteer organisation where members use their skills and time to improve the lives of others. Membership details can be found on our website.

Mr Mac - Support for Apple & Windows Apple’s newly announced OS 16 operating system for iPhones has many new features and will be available in the autumn, usually at the same time as this year’s new iPhone, the 14, is announced. It is compatible with many of the phones able to run the current IOS 15, but it is will not be available for some older devices including the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6s Plus, the iPod touch, and the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. FYI, the first iPhone 6 was released in 2014 and the iPhone 7 in 2016. These phones will continue to function normally, they will not benefit from any of the new features available in IOS 16. It is not just Apple; WhatsApp have just announced that older iPhones, specifically the iPhone 5, will no longer work with their software programme as these models will not be able to update their operating software to IOS 12 or any later version. The iPhone 5 is quite an old phone now having been introduced back in 2012. Handy Tip. Taking a screenshot on an iPad can be fiddly. It really is such a useful feature to be able to share the picture with other people. It is automatically saved into your Photos library and here you can send the whole screen shot or edit it and just send the part you want to share. To make it much easier to do go to Settings > Accessibility then tap on Touch > turn on AssitiveTouch > here you will see a section CUSTOM ACTIONS, the first option is SingleTap > in the list you will see Screenshot, touch this and a small rectangle appears that stays on your screen. Now, when you touch this, it takes a screenshot. It is home to No 4 School of Technical Training that provides continued training to personnel from all three Services and MOD civilian staff. Their mission is to deliver flexible, affordable, modern and effective technical training that meets the requirements of the UK’s Armed Forces. The base is also home to the University of Wales Air Squadron. Terry Coombes, Chair of Daedalus Aviation & Heritage Group said, “we went particularly to see the many ex-Fleet Air Arm aircraft familiar to us at Lee-on-the-Solent, in the shape of the Fairey Gannet, Wessex and Sea King helicopters, Sea Prince and Sea Devon on display amongst several ex Royal Air Force jets including a Vampire, Hunter and a Phantom, plus a Shackleton under restoration.” Members ages ranged from 16 to 80 who all enjoyed the experience and many photographs were taken despite the long journey. Training types were also evident with Folland Gnat and BAC Jet Provost, and locally produced light and microlight aircraft were also on display. Thanks to one of the members of Daedalus Aviation and Heritage Group, there was a privileged look into the Horizon Aircraft Services hangar, where ex-Soviet Bloc fighters and trainers were kept alongside examples of the Percival Pembroke and Chipmunks plus 2 Harriers being restored to fly. This was a massive highlight of the trip and not one afforded to the casual museum visitor.

The risks of not making a will Research from Which? magazine and Solicitors for the Elderly suggests that nearly half of wills in the UK are out of date and over half of the population do not have a will at all. Mihiri Gajraj, Partner – Wills, Trusts & Probate
Making a will is one of the most important estate planning tools that everyone should have, even if you do not consider yourself to have possessions or money to give. Here are some of the risks for those who do not have a valid will: • If you die without a will then the distribution of your estate is dictated by the intestacy rules. These rules may not reflect how
Canine Heroes at shopping centre presentation We promised we would let you know the final figures raised for our charity, Hounds for Heroes, and we’re excited to announce the total. During Rotarian Norman Chapman’s Presidential year, his chosen local charity has received a massive £4,523.05. His year draws to a close this month and the Club is delighted to acknowledge the support received from Fareham Shopping Centre. They contributed £1,230.87 of the overall figure through fundraising in the Centre and it is greatly appreciated by members of the Rotary Club of Fareham. As Mike Taylor, Manager of Fareham Shopping Centre, said: “We were delighted to add our assistance to Hounds for Heroes. When we knew the charity provides much needed assistance to members of the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and British Army - together with the ‘blue light’ emergency services - we felt we could make a positive difference with our contributions.” Allen Parton the founder of Help for Heroes, went to the shopping Centre on Monday 20th June, with his assistance dogs. When they got together, next to the Rotary Club of Fareham’s Wishing Well, Manager of the Centre Mike Taylor presented Allen Parton with the money they had raised. Those who are helped by the charity have been sadly injured or mentally harmed during the course of their employment. The Rotary Club of Fareham is pleased to add their support to the community in this way. A new charity for the year will be announced on 1st July at the start of the next Presidential year.

you wish your assets to be distributed upon death. Parliament could also change these rules at any time, without notice. If you are not married or in a registered civil partnership, when one dies, the surviving partner will receive nothing, potentially leading to significant financial hardship. If spouses or civil partners are separating and one should die during that process then unless a will has been made directing otherwise, the majority of the deceased’s estate will transfer to their spouse or civil partner. If you have significant assets, not having a will in place could lead to an unnecessary inheritance tax burden. A will can indicate those persons that should become guardians of any minor children to prevent disagreements between the family, should both parents die. Wide appeal at West Meon Spanish guitar, a prize-winning pianist, chamber music favourites, a baroque duo recital and a dazzling young soprano: this year’s West Meon Music Festival, which runs from the 8th to 11th of September is sure to appeal to a wide range of music lovers. The festival, now its twelfth year, was founded by the Primrose Piano Quartet – one of the UK’s leading chamber ensembles – who regularly invite their musician friends to join them for the event, held in three beautiful Meon Valley churches. This year’s eight concerts include four solo or duo recitals, favourite works for chamber ensembles and a late night introduction to Schoenberg. “It’s always a joy to share the festival with our various guests,” says Andrew Fuller, the Quartet’s cellist and festival musical director, “and we’re delighted this year that they include renowned guitarist, John Mills; violinist Huw Daniel, who is the leader of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; Emanuil Ivanov, a brilliant young Bulgarian pianist who won the 2019 Busoni International Piano competition; and mezzo soprano Helen Charlston, who is a BBC New Generation Artist and winner of the 2018 London Handel Competition.” Works to be performed by the Primrose include piano quartets by Beethoven and Mozart and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio. They will be joined by string players, Jonathan Martindale, Norbert Blume and Kirsten Jenson in several pieces, including Brahms’ String Sextet in G major and Schubert’s much-loved last chamber work, the String Quintet in C. As in previous years the festival will be raising funds for The Rosemary Foundation, which operates a “hospice at home” service in Hampshire. Concerts take place at churches in West Meon, East Meon and Warnford and tickets are from £10 to £20 ,with generous discounts for students and accompanied children. Full details can be found at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk and the box office will open on 1st July.

Rachel Hudson & The Selborne Landscape Partnership present
T
From the Margins
he exhibition, From The Margins, is created in response to the work of The Selborne Landscape Partnership, restoring the countryside that was home to Gilbert White and Jane Austen. Initially working in conservation communication, Rachel Hudson is known for her lively, yet authentic approaches to natural history illustration and social engagement. She has earned recognition in the UK and US for her collaborations with leading organisations to champion wildlife at risk, captivate audiences and prompt positive change. Taking inspiration from her interest in Medieval stained glass and illuminated manuscripts, Rachel invites you into the microworlds of the field margins. While drawing on the legacy of Medieval art, this exhibition introduces elements from our own time and place.
Part I
The Selborne Bestiary is a visual metaphor for declining species in isolated habitat fragments and the importance of a joinedup ‘mosaic approach’ in conservation that aims to create an interconnected, functioning landscape for wildlife, alongside agriculture. It is informed by compartment portraits of medieval bestiaries that showcase representative beasts and stress the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Following decades of intensive farming, there is only one species per square, nature at the minimum. Our increasing consumer demands come at the expense of the health of the natural environment. What happens in between the squares and how these species can survive and thrive in the contemporary farmed landscape, is explored in Margins.
Part II
Margins shows you what life can look like when field margins are planted, managed and reconnected by farmers and volunteers. Witness the energy and struggles of the changing seasons, where predator and prey find food and shelter, while farmers are busy with their labours of the months, to produce our food. At two metres high, these Margins play with the central convention of Medieval marginalia (tiny doodles at the edges of books). Centre-

stage and large-scale, here they arm the beauty and purpose of seemingly untidy and unimportant strips of land.
The Selborne Landscape Partnership
Established in 2014 with the idea that if farmers collaborated at the landscape scale to conserve nature the whole would be more than the sum of the parts – and where better to set about doing this than in a parish which has had its nature immortalised by Gilbert White. It quickly transpired that this collaboration was about much more than farmers as a range of local wildlife organisations got on board and a small army of amateur naturalists enthusiastically gave up their time for surveys to guide action on the ground. Now we are delighted to be part of this new artistic collaboration with Rachel Hudson. Her beautifully evocative illustrations of our field margin species demonstrate how conservation needs art as well as heart to grow public support, giving us an opportunity to share the work we do in a compelling way. Following in the footsteps of the many talented illustrators of numerous editions of The Natural History of Selborne Rachel wonderfully captures and celebrates the beauty and diversity of Selborne’s farmed landscape and its wild inhabitants. William Selborne, Lead Farmer, Selborne Landscape Partnership

Bot ley A historic, charming village in the heart of Hampshire
otley was once described as the most delightful village in the world by famous journalist and radical politician William Cobbett, who called the place home between 1806 and 1820. It is hard to disagree with Mr Cobbett as you wander down the High Street, which has a unmistakable Olde Worlde, country village feel to the place, with pubs and eateries dotted along the High Street. The buildings, some dating back to the 17th Century, certainly transport you to a bygone era with their columns and sash windows.
passed by marriage to the Dukes of Portland. For about the next two hundred and fifty years, the Portlands leased the Mills to various tenant millers. Britain’s involvement in the wars of Europe in the second half of the Eighteen Century caused a significant increase in the population along the south coast of England. The demand for flour in the area rose with the increase in population and in 1757 plans were drawn up for the expansion of “His Grace the Duke of Portlands Mills at Botley.” The present centre building gets its appearance from this date.
However, Botley has been around much longer than the 17th Century. A settlement first appeared during the 10th Century, when the Romans built a road from Chichester to Southampton, crossing the River Hamble just south of present-day Botley. The settlement was known in Saxon times as 'Bottaleah' ('Botta' was most likely a person, while 'Leah' is a Saxon word for a woodland clearing). Some time prior to the Norman conquest during the 11th Century, a gradual rise in sea level meant that travellers found the river easier to ford further north of the original Roman crossing. This new crossing place provided a new focal point for the village, which in 1086 was listed in the Domesday book as 'Botelie' and included two mills and had a population of less than 100.
In 1838 the site was bought by W and J Clarke and the Mills. As well as grinding and trading cereals, the company also traded in coal, importing it in by barges which came up the River Hamble at high tide. Grain was also imported this way until 1914. For a short time between 1830 and 1848 paper was also manufactured on this site. In 1921 the Botley Flour Milling Company Limited was formed and by 1928 control of it was sold to the Appleby family and remains in their ownership today. Commercial white flour production continued at Botley until 1990 and stoneground flour until 1993, when for economic reasons production ceased.
As previously mentioned, The Domesday Book in 1086 is the earliest documentation showing this site to have been used for milling. The site was part of the Manor of Botley and owned by Ralph de Mortimer, a French nobleman who fought on the side of King William I at the Battle of Hastings. The mills remained with the Mortimer family until the early part of the Fourteenth Century, when manor and mills were held on their behalf by a family who had taken on the name of Botley. During the English dissolution of the monasteries (1536 to 1539) the Manor of Botley and hence the mills was given to one Thomas Wriothesly who was a commissioner of Henry VIII and later was made Earl of Southampton. The third Earl died without a male heir and the manor, including Botley Mills,

In the mid 19th Century, the climate made South Hampshire ideal for growing strawberries, with Botley becoming the centre for thriving trade of the fruit. In 1841, Botley railway station was opened by the London and Southampton Railway Company, becoming a major loading point for the seasonal strawberry traffic, with Botley forming the start of what is now known as the Strawberry Trail, a 15 mile footpath to Bursledon Railway Station, via Manor Farm Country Park. So, with a rich history and lots to see and do in Botley, what's keeping you from going?

Manor Farm Country Park
A working farm of a bygone age set in 400 acres of beautiful countryside on the banks of the River Hamble. The farm portrays rural life of the late Victorian age through the living history presentation of historic buildings and agricultural machinery, including a medieval farmhouse and 13th century church. Children will love meeting all the friendly farm animals or going ‘back to school’ in the farm’s Victorian schoolroom. The Country Park offers miles of waymarked walks through a scenic landscape of farmland and riverside woodland. A great place to come and unwind.
Are you a budding photographer? Do you have cute animal or pet pictures on your phone? This year the Botley Mills Country Store are hosting a calendar competition. The Strawberry Trail The Strawberry Trail is a figure of eight walking path in the Hamble River Valley. Starting from Botley the first loop heads north west to the edge of Eastleigh before returning via the Itchen Valley Country Park and Manor Farm Country Park. The second, smaller loop follows the River Hamble to Bursledon before making a circuit of the Royal Victoria Country Park beside Southampton Water and the pretty Hamble-le-Rice. The area was once an important strawberry growing region. Hamble and the Solent Water have a long history of boatbuilding and you will find marinas and boating activity along the trail. Plastic Free July By Plastric Free Foundation
What you can do
even supermarkets have sections with freshly baked goods that are yet to be packaged. By heading along with your own reusable bread bag or containers, you can easily avoid single-use plastic packaging.
Want some tips to find out how you can reduce plastic waste? The good news is, anyone can get involved. You can start out small, or really challenge yourself! Get inspired using the menu options below.
Takeaway Coffec Cups
You can easily avoid takeaway coffee cups by bringing along your own reusable alternative. There are many reusable coffee cups available on the market. Keep it in your bag or on your desk at work; wherever you’ll remember to use it. Many people choose socially and environmentally-friendly reusables made of ceramic, glass, plastic or stainless steel. You don’t even need to purchase a special cup. You can bring a mug or jar from home – just be conscious of using items that can heat up or don’t travel well if you’re going far. If you forget your reusable alternative and don’t have time to dine-in, consider going without. It might not be easy, but will probably mean you never forget again!
Pre-packed fruit and vegetables
Buying plasticwrapped or packaged fruits and vegetables can be convenient, but unfortunately it creates plastic waste. Instead, look out for loose fruit and vegetables in your local grocery store, or head to a farmers market or organic store where plastic packaging is less often used. Choose lightweight, reusable produce bags instead of the plastic bags that are usually provided. Be sure to look for ones made from recycled plastic or repurposed netting fabric. It’s also worth asking if you really need a plastic bag. For example, if you’re buying a bunch of bananas, why not just keep them loose in your shopping basket
40
If you forget to bring your own, you can also ask for a paper bag (which you can recycle later on if clean, or compost or shred and feed to the worm farm). or trolley and transport them home in your reusable shopping bag?
Plastic Bottles
Avoiding buying single-use plastic water bottles is as simple as carrying your own reusable alternative with you. Be sure to choose a socially-responsible and environmentally-friendly alternative, such as a reusable bottle made from stainless steel, glass, or safe aluminium. If you do forget to bring your water bottle along with you, don’t panic. You can find a fountain, ask a cafe for a glass of water, or purchase a glass bottle of water and reuse it.
Meat, Fish & Deli
Choose to refuse pre-packaged meat, fish and deli products, particularly those sold on polystyrene trays. It’s worth shopping around for a local butcher, fishmonger or deli-counter who sell unpackaged items. Just remember to bring your own reusable container along when you go shopping.
At the Bakery
Most local bakeries, farmers markets and
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Reduce what you buy. Before you make a purchase, ask yourself if you truly need it, or if you can repurpose other items that you already have. Shopping for secondhand clothing and products helps contribute to less waste. Avoid products that are wrapped in plastic, and seek more sustainable alternatives.
Reusable Bags
Reusable shopping bags are a fantastic alternative to singleuse plastic bags. It’s a great idea to keep a stash of your reusable bags somewhere where you’ll remember them; like in the boot of your car or by your front door. You can also get into the habit of writing a reminder to yourself at the start of each grocery shopping list. Reusable bags go beyond just grocery shopping – bring them along for all shopping trips! There are even purse/pocket sized reusable bags that you can keep on hand for emergencies. For more information and ideas on how to reduce your platic waste visit: www.plasticfreejuly.org/

Free Physics Festival for Science teachers
Winchester College’s Physics Department has worked with the Hampshire Physics CPD Partnership this year to deliver a series of informative practical workshops for specialist and non-specialist physics teachers. Each half term, teachers Jeremy Douglas and Jamie Barron have provided hands-on experience to teachers from across the region to develop their confidence in teaching physics at Key Stages 3 and 4. Sessions on electromagnetism, electricity, waves and energy have been delivered by our specialist physics dons with the aim of addressing misconceptions and demonstrating engaging practical activities. After many years of working with Physics Partners the relationship is going from strength to strength and has also brought together UTC Portsmouth and STEM Academy South to deliver a programme of events. This year, the annual Festival of Physics will be taking place at Winchester College on Saturday 9 July with a diverse programme of workshops, a keynote plenary from Dr David Price from Diamond Light Source, as well as a chance to meet our exhibitors and network with physics teachers and technicians from across the region. The festival is free and open to all teachers and technicians delivering physics in schools. For more details and to register your place visit https://www.winchestercollege. org/stories/festival-of-physicshttps:// physicspartners.com/events/winchester/

The 20th Hampshire Food Festival Come and join in the fun of the Hampshire Food Festival, returning this summer. Now in its 20th year, the award-winning Hampshire Food Festival is a glorious celebration of the region's food and drink with a programme of events throughout July. This is the biggest Food Festival in the country: encompassing BBQ, markets, pop-ups, shows, tastings, trails and tours across the county from 1st-31st July. Hampshire Fare established the very first Hampshire Food Festival back in 2000 and it quickly achieved a scale not seen elsewhere. When most food festivals were based around a market format and held for one day, Hampshire’s ran for a fortnight and included walks, talks, tours, tastings and cookery demos. By 2008 it had evolved into a month of activities, encouraging locals and visitors to explore Hampshire’s countryside, villages and market towns and discover its abundance of food and drink. “In this year’s Festival events programme MasterChef winner and Hampshire local Jane Devonshire writes: “The message to try local is a message which truly resonates at the moment. Choosing local supports your neighbours, considers the environment and strengthens the local economy. Just as important, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s produce is among the very best on offer across the country and, indeed, the world." This popular Festival continues to feature a wide variety of tasty events. Highlights from this year’s programme include old favourites, among them farm tours and cheese suppers at Lyburn Farm in the New Forest; Fizz Fest, at Black Chalk vineyard in the Test Valley; and the local produce market and chefs’ kitchen at the New Forest Show. Exciting new experiences are
also lined up, among them: a Gin and Beer Fest at the Gin Palace in Andover; Cocktails and Canapés with MasterChef winner Jane Devonshire at Gorilla Spirts in Upton Grey; gin tasting at Kimbridge Barn in the Test Valley; Pothecary Gin pop-up at Montagu Arms in Beaulieu; and Raimes Sparkling Wine Summer Courtyard in Tichborne. There are also BBQ Masterclasses with SoCal in Southampton, baking workshops with South Downs Sourdough in Cheriton, and a Food Fare at Westlands Farm Shop near Wickham. Special dining experiences will be popping up at Hampshire Deli in Wolverton, Balmer Lawn in Brockenhurst, and The Lighthouse in Milford, plus a Coates & Seely special event at The White Horse, Otterbourne, Winchester. Tracy Nash comments: “Hampshire Food Festival celebrates one of the great pleasures in life: food and drink with a relaxed carnival atmosphere and opportunities to discover new tastes and experiences. The Festival continues to provide what it set out to achieve when it was set up in 2000: a great opportunity for independents to raise their profile and a unique way for everyone to enjoy and appreciate Hampshire’s heritage, culture, and sense of place. We are inviting everyone to join the celebration, and how welcome that will be after the past two years.” Free copies of the Hampshire Food Festival events programme will be available from various farm shops, village stores, pubs, restaurants and hotels, events and markets. The events will also be listed on the Hampshire Fare own events page. A digital version of the Hampshire Food Festival events programme can be read online. Always proud to be the scourge of purists, Blue Apple take a look under the bonnet of this story of murderous ambition and throw out whatever isn’t needed to push the story forward to its inevitable end. As experienced purveyors of throwing light into areas previously dark, you can also expect a few moments that are certainly not in the original. Blood? Yes. Murder? Yes. But laughs? Songs? Puppets? Dance? Oh yes…this is, after all The Blue Apple Macbeth

When Barnaby Folcey is murdered at a family gathering at Marlgate Manor, it transpires that he had a motive to murder everybody else but no one had a reason to want him dead. While dying, he scrawled the letters “b-a-r,” which can implicate everyone. While the bizarre group frantically tries to unmask the murderer; people vanish, poison is found in the sherry, and the police take forever to arrive.

School of Rock is the global hit musical based on the iconic movie starring Jack Black. Wannabe rock star Dewey Finn is cast out by his dive-bar bandmates and finds himself in desperate need of cash. Frederick, apprenticed to the Pirates since a child, learns that he was born in a leap year on 29th February, and that he is contracted to the Pirate King until his 21st BIRTHDAY, not his 21st year. With only the inept Penzance constabulary to protect him, how will he resist being forced to endure a life of crime until he is 84 - and will his sweetheart, Mabel, wait for him that long?

1609. I am Emilia.Writer. Wife. Lover. Mother. Muse. 400 years ago Emilia Bassano wanted her voice to be heard. It wasn’t. Could she have been the “Dark Lady” of Shakespeare’s sonnets? What of her own poems? Why was her story erased from history? Emilia and her sisters reach out to us across the centuries with passion, fury, laughter and song. Listen to them. Let them inspire and unite us. Other shows and performances available at these venues - please note the above shows may be fully booked at time of publishing

The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company are coming!
make you think. The new show is called ‘Gods and Dogs’. This new hilarious dystopian allegory is set in 2084 on the fictitious island of Abatina in a world where people are either glamorous celebrities or slobbering dog-like followers of them gripped to their telepafones – with the exception of the Nevnops (Not Very Nice People) as the President, Big Al, calls them. The story follows Tina who enters ‘Marriage Maker’, a ‘telepavision’ gameshow. The idea of the game is if you win you get to marry the super-glamorous footballer, Harry Best, on the Saturday, have a weekend of love, then divorce him on the Monday. ‘All the fun & no ties!’ as the compere, Rich Nobb, puts it. Unfortunately, Tina makes the mistake of falling in love when she wins & doesn’t want to divorce. Doreen, her best friend, has her own opinion, but then she might be a Nevnop & the Mind Police might get to her first & send her to the wolves on the ‘Other Side’ - a dangerous world over ‘the mountain’ where the inhabitants of Abatina, according to Big Al, must not go, with dangerous free-thinkers & wolves that might get them.
The Rudes are touring again this summer with a great new show and will be visiting East Hampshire again - their twenty-fourth annual visit to some villages! You won’t want to miss their brand of high tempo, physical theatre performed by some of the best actor / musicians around and designed to make you laugh out loud… and

Will it really be like this in 2084? Is it happening even now? Will Tina get her man? Will Doreen escape the Mind Police? You’ll have to put down your telepafones and come to find out!
