Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
Ben and the team were a dream to work with, from the start. Ben had great design ideas, which we incorporated, and which have turned out brilliantly. The quality of their workmanship is top class. We left them to fit the kitchen while we went away and they did a fantastic job. They even did unplanned kindnesses like changing a broken garage door lock free of charge. We keep finding little unexpected touches that delight us. We will use them again for other jobs in the house in the future. When you find people like this, you don’t want to let them go. If anyone reading this decides to use them, you will not be disappointed.
Another Happy Customer
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

Christmas Santa Run Latest Update
Following the fantastic support for our Christmas Santa collection, we were able to fund a number of school initiatives including resources and equipment for classrooms, updating/painting playground games, updating a play area for a preschool, funding help for children who might not have been able to go on residential visits, helping with after school and breakfast clubs and a geography project for Bishops Waltham Infants School where the Mens Shed Club built a signpost, bird box and bug hotel.
Swanmore Big Lunch
The Meon Valley Lions Club took the BBQ and new ‘Bunny Hop’ race game to the Recreation Ground. The event was extremely well supported, so much so we ran out of food and the Bunnies were a roaring success. Let’s hope our Fete on 8th July is as successful!
Calling All Voices: Join Our Community Choir in September
Swanmore Open Gardens
On 22nd and 23rd April there was a tremendous turn out to visit the Swanmore Open Gardens. The Meon Valley Lions Club’s minibus supported the event by picking up and dropping off lots of people at the various gardens. The minibus is an essential component of the event as without it, the narrow lanes of Upper Swanmore would clog and the event wouldn’t be feasible. With a record attendance £2,200 was raised for Rowans Hospice, Paterson Centre, St Barnabas, QA Neonatal Unit and Muscular Dystrophy. Ten superb gardens were open, all different, ranging from large to small and totalling about 10 acres of beautiful, lovingly tended gardens. As if that’s not enough, the homemade cakes were to die for in the Paterson Centre.
Minibus appeal - Help us transport local people!
Our 15-year-old minibus has done us proud for many years but sadly its upkeep, running costs and reliability is starting to impact on our ability to help local people. The estimated cost of a suitable second-hand vehicle is circa £36,000. To date we have raised £18,000 but its taking too long and we are concerned it will impact heavily on the assistance we provide.
We are seeking support from a number of organisations but if you feel you can donate, no matter how large or small, it will go directly to the fund helping us achieve our goal. https://www. peoplesfundraising.com/.../MEON-VALLEY-LIONS...
Are you looking for a way to connect with your community and explore your musical talents? Look no further than our friendly choir, the Meon Voices. Our diverse group of singers, ranging from beginners to experienced and including soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices, come together to make beautiful music, build often lifelong friendships, and make a positive impact to those around us.
At the Meon Voices, we believe that music is not just a form of entertainment, but a powerful tool for self-expression and personal growth. Whether you're shy or outgoing, young or mature, a soloist or prefer to blend your voice with others, our choir is open to everyone. Plus, there are numerous benefits of singing in a choir, such as reducing stress, increasing happiness, and improving overall mental health.
Our choir director is passionate about helping us to improve our voices and technique, so you'll have the opportunity to improve your singing skills while having a great time. Everyone is welcome, and a particular call is for experienced tenor and bass voices, which are usually male. As with many performance arts, we have fewer male than female voices, and would like to improve the balance if at all possible.
In addition to our weekly rehearsals, we have exciting performances at Christmas and in the Spring. Being part of the choir gives you the chance to showcase your talents and perform publicly. Take part in a fulfilling experience that's not just enjoyable but could also positively change your life.
If you are interested in joining this friendly, uplifting choir, the Monday night practices will recommence in September 2023, 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. at the United Free Church in Bishop’s Waltham, culminating in a Christmas concert. Practices then recommence in January 2024 and the year ends with a spring concert followed by a summer break.

Winchester Pupils Prize-Winners in International Sustainability Competition

five A Levels each - conducting dozens of biochemical experiments. Eren said: “We have the opportunity to come into the lab, outside of lesson time, and pursue our own practical projects. All the barriers are taken down when you’re at Winchester College and it’s like working in a proper research institute.”
A team of Winchester College pupils has won US$25,000 as runners-up in an international sustainability competition. In an online awards ceremony on 24 April, the Earth Foundation announced that the three pupils – Maks, Eren and Alistaircompeting under the team name ‘Bactoplastics’, placed in the top four out of 1290 teams worldwide.
The Earth Prize is an annual, global competition for teenage students, run by Geneva-based The Earth Foundation, that rewards the ideas and projects with the most potential to tackle environmental issues. In this year’s competition, there were entrants from 116 countries and territories around the world.
Working out of the school’s Biology department, Team Bactoplastics is producing a complete protocol for industrial production of biodegradable plastics, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), from food waste using genetically engineered bacteria. PHAs are fully biodegradable
A-Level pupil Maks explained: "We have designed a novel, cost-effective method for their production, which addresses the primary challenges in contemporary industrial PHA production. Our plastic substitutes most petroleum-based plastics for packaging and has potential to reduce plastic waste production by 67% in the UK. Our product would reduce pressure on landfills due to its 7-week degradation time, while repurposing up to 1.5 million tonnes of food waste annually.”
The pupils spend 20 hours per week in the laboratory – on top of revising for
The pupils have also secured a partnership with University College London to continue their work in their labs over the summer months. The team will be investing their prize money back into the project to try and ensure it can evolve to have a real-world impact.

West Meon Music Festival - A festival with wide appeal
‘Just a Carer’
Knowledge, Dignity and Compassion, these are the values at the very heart of Lapis Care, your local domiciliary Care provider, who continue to raise the profile of care.
Our new Registered manager, Lena LeMesurier has taken the reins and is continuing to deliver the high standard of care, that you would expect from an award-winning care provider. Our Director, Liz Blacklock, has been given a chance to focus on changes that are desperately needed in the care industry and awareness of the professionalism of care.
This year’s West Meon Music Festival, from 14th to 17th September, promises a wide range of classical music to appeal to all tastes: favourite chamber pieces, song and piano recitals, early music and composers from Monteverdi to Mahler, Schubert to Schoenberg.
The festival, now in its thirteenth year, opens with the event’s founders the Primrose Piano Quartet, performing Brahms’ A major Piano Quartet as well as duo works by Mozart and Schubert. Friday evening sees a recital by Thomas Kelly – winner of numerous international piano competition prizes – followed by “Who’s afraid of Arnold Schoenberg?”an informal late night concert by the Primrose exploring his work.
On Saturday 16th September the festival spreads out across the Meon Valley: in the morning the strings of the Primrose will perform a version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at East Meon’s historic All Saints Church while in the afternoon the beautiful twelfth century Church of Our Lady at Warnford hosts the Gonzaga Band performing works from the “Age of Monteverdi”.
On Saturday evening the Primrose are back at West Meon Church with Schubert’s Trout Quintet followed on Sunday by a morning recital of French song with exciting young soprano Harriet Burns. The French theme continues for the “Festival Finale” in the afternoon with works by Fauré, Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Françaix and Bizet.
Full details of all concerts are now available at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk and the box office opens on 1st June.
Recently appointed as a Director of National Association Care and Support workers (NACAS), Liz is creating professional relationships with Care England, Championing Social Care and even visiting the House of Lords in order to change the public perception of Social Care and its workforce. In doing this, we want to implement the registration of ‘Care Professional’s’ as the legal title for a ‘carer’. No more “they’re just a carer”.
Everyone has, or will, experience care at some point in their lives, even if not for themselves but for family or friends. Carers should be known worldwide as professionals. Their work involves completing a person’s whole day, from washing, dressing, medication, food preparation, socialisation, organisation, cleaning and so much more. The physical and emotional strain for a carer is tough and the pure passion and empathy that is behind the work they do is outstanding.
No matter who you are, our health is something that we must look after and unfortunately is often out of our control. A carer will step in at some of the hardest parts of a person’s life, to make things easier and help them continue the best quality of life. However, for years a negative stigma has been formed around the care profession and we have heard it too many times, ‘Just a carer’. Lapis Care want this to stop.
In order to make a change locally we have to initiate changes nationally. This is the time now to make difference and spread the awareness and acknowledgment of ‘Care Professionals’.

End Polio – Now we are so close Rotary International is a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which aims to end polio through it’s End Polio Now campaign. Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralysing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five, spreading from person to person, typically through contaminated water, then attacking the nervous system.
As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years and our goal of ridding the world of this disease is now closer than ever. Today, polio remains endemic in only Afghanistan and Pakistan and this year there has only
been one case, to date, of wild Polio in Pakistan and none in Afghanistan.
Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly three billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have also played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort, but it’s crucial that we continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. From June to September, enjoy some great music with the South Coast Symphonia. Eleven concerts…. Great music… with diverse musical themes ranging from Opera, the Classics and Shakespeare before finishing the summer in spectacular style with a traditional Last Night of the Proms. This summer you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the South Coast Symphonia as it plays to audiences at Titchfield Abbey, Fort Brockhurst and Titchfield Festival Theatre.
Kevin Fraser is Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Artistic Director and Chair of the Trustees:
“This year will be the best summer yet for our 40 strong professional orchestra with our first ever promenade season of music from South Coast Symphonia. The 2023 programme reflects the astonishing diversity of music that we all enjoy, including selections from the greatest classics, well known operas and beautiful harmonies from the world’s leading composers.”
Summer concert highlights
In July we will listen to superb music from both sides of the Atlantic. On 1 July, the South Coast Symphonia celebrates our friends from across the Pond with Stars & Stripes Forever. Enjoy everything American, with music from Souza to Gershwin and Copeland to Bernstein. Truly a night of stars and star spangled banners! Then on 29 July and 4 August we return home for two Best of British concerts, from the triumphal marches of Elgar to Holst’s Planets and traditional music from around the four nations that make up this United Kingdom.
In August and September, there will be a range of different musical themes to suit various tastes, including Militaria (5 August) and On the Crest of the Wave (6 August) celebrating our military and naval connections in the atmospheric setting of Fort Brockhurst. The season in early September approaches its climax with a Classical Classics concert, A Night at the Musicals before the grand finale, the Last Night at The Proms.

Buying second-hand doesn’t make you less of a parent
Jo aka Slummy Single Mummy shares her love for pre-loved and helps launch the Sudocrem Great British Pre-Loved Awards.
I was young when my first daughter, Bee, was born and money was tight. I had to be clever and made a lot of things myself, including a hand-painted border of every single Mr Men character to go around her cot. While some people might feel like they need to spend hundreds of pounds on all the latest baby “essentials,” I loved shopping second-hand, finding bargains in charity shops and going through bags of hand-me-down clothes.
trust like a basic body and hair wash, soothing Sudocrem antiseptic healing cream for nappy rash, eczema and sore skin or the new Sudocrem Naturals Nappy Cream made with 96% naturally derived ingredients.
A tub of Sudocrem antiseptic healing cream really does go a long way. I remember using it on Bee when she was little and it seemed to last forever! Bee uses it now for Joey - a big tub at home and a handy My Little Sudocrem (£2.99) to pop into his changing bag for outings and for nursery. Sudocrem has been trusted by generations since 1931 and our family is clearly proof of that!
When you’re done, pass it on
Unless you’re planning another baby immediately, there’s no point filling up your loft with baby stuff so share the love and pass things on. Gift to friends and family as hand-me-downs or sell online or at nearlynew sales to raise some money for your next pre-loved bargain.
It’s been 27 years now since I painted that Mr Men border but I’ve not given up loving homemade and second-hand. Just recently I found Joey a Fisher Price stove in a charity shop just like the one I had when I was his age. It brought back so many happy memories and I’m sure it will make a lot more - proof that there’s a lot of love in pre-loved!
Here are a few lessons I learnt as a parent: Buying second-hand doesn’t make you less of a parent
The love you have for your baby isn’t defined by what you spend on them. It’s about the quality time you spend with them, the values you teach them and the love you show them in your words and actions every day.
You can pay £1,000 on a brand new travel system or £10 on a pushchair at a car boot sale (which is what I did - bargain!) and it says nothing about you as a parent. Fact.
Pre-loved clothes are a no-brainer
There are two inescapable facts about babies - they grow quickly and they are messy - both of which mean it’s pointless spending money on new clothes. I was lucky that Bee had two uncles just a year older than her. She wore a lot of blue dungarees and jumpers with tractors on them and couldn’t have cared less. Save your money instead for coffee and cake with new parenting friends (trust me, it’s a much better investment).
Keep it simple
Forget the bathroom full of creams and potions. Your baby isn’t going to be checking the labels on their toiletries - they’ll be happy if they’re clean and comfy. Stick to the simple, multipurpose products that you
To celebrate all things pre-loved, Sudocrem is launching the Great British Pre-Loved Awards on Monday 5th June to coincide with World Environment Day. There are six categories to choose from including best charity or vintage shop and best pre-loved online. Entries will be judged by an expert panel of pre-loved champions including Great British Sewing Bee finalist Brogan Sommerville and BBC Interiors Design Masters finalist, Jack Kinsey.
All entries will go into a prize draw to win a £1,000 Airbnb voucher. Happy Days!
