Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
Ben and the team were a dream to work with, from the start. Ben had great design ideas, which we incorporated, and which have turned out brilliantly. The quality of their workmanship is top class. We left them to fit the kitchen while we went away and they did a fantastic job. They even did unplanned kindnesses like changing a broken garage door lock free of charge. We keep finding little unexpected touches that delight us. We will use them again for other jobs in the house in the future. When you find people like this, you don’t want to let them go. If anyone reading this decides to use them, you will not be disappointed.
Another Happy Customer
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

Businesses give nature a helping hand as South Downs ‘Park Protectors’ is launched
Anew scheme is giving corporations a significant opportunity to get involved with nature recovery and staff volunteering in the great outdoors.
The South Downs Protector scheme launches today (12 June) and is inviting corporate partners to support the South Downs National Park for a year with a £10,000 contribution.
The donation will help fund the National Park’s ambition to create 13,000 hectares – or an area almost twice the size of Southampton – of new habitat where plants and animals can thrive. The ReNature initiative is tackling biodiversity loss by creating significant new areas of woodland, hedgerow, wildflower meadow, and wetlands over the next decade.
Businesses that sign up to the scheme receive volunteering days in the incredible landscape of the National Park, a ranger talk, as well as corporate getaway opportunities at the breathtaking Seven Sisters Country Park.
They will also receive a one-year subscription to the Green South Downs Sustainability Certification Program, which focuses on helping businesses reach sustainability goals.
As the scheme launches, two businesses are already on-board – Brighton-based firms Clarity Environmental and Groundsure.
James Winkworth, Head of Charity at the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity for the National Park, said:
“We’re really excited to be launching the Park Protector initiative and are looking for corporate partners right across the UK.
“Businesses are a ‘force for good’ and vital to the future of this treasured landscape. As Britain’s youngest National Park we’ve achieved a lot in 13 years, but there’s so much more we can do to make this an even better place and protect it for future generations. The truth is that this is a fragile landscape in the busiest part of the UK and it needs a lot of support. Businesses can make such a significant impact by becoming a Park Protector, helping in the fight against biodiversity loss and climate change, while also demonstrating ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) commitments and creating a meaningful legacy.
“This is also a wonderful opportunity for colleagues to be able to get their hands dirty, and their feet muddy, and get involved in some hands-on conservation work!”
David Honcoop, Managing Director of Clarity Environmental, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the South Downs National Park Trust and their new Protector scheme. Through Clarity Cares, the caritative extension of our business, we are already involved with national level environmental organisations, it was therefore very important to us to support a local and ambitious initiative like the Renature scheme.
“This partnership allows us to not only support the local environment but also actively contribute to the preservation and restoration of the very landscape that surrounds us. We are very proud to support the South Downs National Trust both financially and through volunteering days.”
Ceri Sansom, Consultancy Director for Groundsure, said, “Groundsure specialises in environmental intelligence, including highlighting climate change risks to property when it’s sold, so when we were looking for an organisation to support we wanted to make sure that it matches our ethos. The South Downs Protector scheme works for us because its aim is to improve the local environment through renaturing and will allow us to contribute both with funds and hands on support through volunteer days. We find volunteer days are a great way to help the local community and environment as well as build our teams.”

Settlement Agreements and talking ‘off the record’
‘Using a settlement agreement to bring an employment relationship to an end, and effectively wipe the slate clean, can be very useful. But, to start the conversation, employers need to be able to speak off the record,’ says Linda Wilson, Partner and Head of Employment with MacDonald Oates. ‘There are ways that this can be done, but it’s not as simple as just stating something is off the record – employers need to take care and be aware of a few limitations.’
What is a settlement agreement?
A settlement agreement is a binding agreement to waive most contractual and statutory employment rights against the employer, usually in exchange for a payment and sometimes other benefits such as an agreed reference.
To protect the employee, where there may be an imbalance of power, the agreement is only binding if certain conditions are met. Most significantly, unless the agreement is reached through Acas, the employee must receive advice from a lawyer or an appropriately qualified advisor.
Benefits of a settlement agreement
Dismissing an employee can be fraught with risk. Employers need to have a legally sound reason and must follow a fair dismissal process. If not, an employee with more than two years’ service could successfully bring a claim for unfair dismissal. Employees do not need two years’ service if they can establish that something else was at play, such as discrimination or if the employer found the employee difficult because they ‘blew the whistle’.
Using a settlement agreement can avoid the cost, delay, hassle, and risk of instigating dismissal procedures. Unless certain rights are carved out, a suitably worded settlement agreement should prevent the employee from bringing claims against the employer.
Benefits of ‘off the record’ discussions
Talking ‘off the record’ allows for a frank discussion without the risk of it
being used in evidence before a court or employment tribunal. Otherwise, if the employer asks the employee whether they would be interested in an agreed exit, the employee could resign and claim constructive unfair dismissal. Alternatively, if the employee is dismissed further down the line, the employee could use this conversation in an unfair dismissal claim to show that the performance management process was a sham and the employer ‘wanted them out’ all along.
When are conversations ‘off the record’?
If there is a dispute with the employee, the ‘without prejudice’ rule may apply to protect communications genuinely aimed at resolving the dispute through settlement. This could apply to all types of employment claims, but does not apply in exceptional circumstances such as where the communications involve fraud or blackmail. If there is no dispute with the employee, and provided certain conditions are met, an employer can have what are known as ‘protected conversations’ without the risk of the conversation coming back to haunt them.
A word of warning; this protection only applies to unfair dismissal claims and discussions before the employee has left. If the employee has other potential claims, such as for discrimination, the conversation could form evidence in a tribunal. The protection also does not apply if the discussions involve ‘improper behaviour’.
We can talk you through the timing and what you need to cover to make sure conversations are ‘off the record’. There are ways to efficiently bring an employment relationship to an end and to keep risks to a minimum, but there are traps for the unwary. This is why we recommend you take legal advice and we can help with this. For further information, please contact Linda in the employment team on 01730 268211 or email lsw@macdonaldoates.co.uk. Protect Your Pooch and Our Rivers
Our dogs love to cool off in hot weather, but did you know that a dip in the river could reduce their flea and tick protection? Many spot-on treatments wash off in water, forcing dog owners to spend more time and money to keep their pet safe.
These treatments can also do serious harm to a river’s wildlife. Because they are insecticides, they can kill the larvae of species like mayflies, damselflies, and dragonflies. As a food source for fish, bats, and birds, these insects are crucial to the health of our rivers.
If you have a dog, ask your vet about flea treatment tablets, which don’t wash off in water. If you stick with spot-on treatments, explore other ways to beat the heat. A cooling vest can keep your dog refreshed during a walk, while a shallow paddling pool is great for at home.
As we seek to protect both our dogs and our wildlife, it might be time for a new approach to flea and tick treatment. A recent paper from Imperial College London notes that some ingredients have been banned in farming, and highlights the risk of parasites becoming immune to their effects.
One of the paper’s authors, Veterinary Surgeon Dr Andrew Prentis, suggests asking your vet “what is best for [your] pet, what is safe for the environment, and whether such regular preventative treatments are needed. In the same way that we only take antibiotics when we’re ill - not every month - we may need to apply the same principle to parasite treatments for our pets."
To learn more about our local chalk streams, and how you can care for them, check out the Watercress and Winterbournes scheme at www.hiwwt.org.uk/winterbournes. Our work is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
There are few places lovelier to visit than chalk streams in summertime. Their vibrant wildlife and crystal-clear water make them ideal spots for walking on a warm day. Embark on a lively stroll along their banks, or take a quiet moment to enjoy their serene beauty. Look for brown trout, butterflies, and water voles; listen for coots, dragonflies, and kingfishers.
This talk will showcase some great places to see these amazing habitats in north and central Hampshire. From well-known treasures to underrated gems, get inspiration for days out and learn how to visit in a way that's safe for wildlife. Hampshire Countryside Service will also join us to share top tips for getting the most from the Rights of Way network.

Crab & Asparagus Tart
SERVES 4 PEOPLE
PASTRY INGREDIENTS
• 180g plain flour
• 90g cold butter, cut into small pieces
• 1 egg yolk mixed with 2 tbsp water (reserve the white for glazing the pastry)
FILLING INGREDIENTS
• 200g fresh crab meat (½ white, ½ brown meat)
• 300g tender asparagus
• 2 large eggs
• 1 egg yolk
• 260ml double cream
METHOD
Heat the oven to 200C. Making the pastry. Seive the flour into a large bowl with a pinch of salt, then add the diced butter. Take a table knife or pastry scraper and continue to cut the butter into smaller pieces in the flour. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then add the egg yolk and water.
Use the knife or pastry scraper to cut in the liquid and then pull the mix together with your hands, trying not to overwork it, until you have a ball of pastry. Alternatively, put the flour, salt and butter into a food processor and whizz until you have crumbs. Add the liquid and pulse the mixture until it comes together. Wrap the pastry and chill in the fridge for about 10 mins, before rolling out to fit your tin. Chill again for at least 30 mins.
Blind bake the pastry: cover it with greaseproof paper, fill it with baking beans or dried pulses and place in the oven for about 15 mins or until the pastry is almost ready. Remove the paper and beans, prick the pastry with a fork and place back in the oven for another 5-10 mins, until the really dry and crisp. Brush with a little beaten egg white and bake for an extra 2 mins. This may seem a rigmarole, but soggy pastry can be the ruination of a perfect tart.
Turn the oven down to 180C. Cut the asparagus spears to fit the tart. Plunge into boiling water for about 1 min if pencil-thin and just 2-3 mins for finger-thick spears. Drain and refresh in a bowl of cold water.
Beat the eggs and yolk with a fork, stir in the cream and white crabmeat and season with a little salt and pepper. Once the tart shell is ready, spread a layer of the brown crab meat over the base (this is where most of the crab favour is) and then pour over the crab custard. Arrange the asparagus on top of the tart and carefully place in the oven for 20-25 mins, until the filling is set and just wobbly.
Allow to sit for about 15 mins before removing the tin and serving warm with a simple salad and perhaps some new potatoes.

Well, what a day that was! We saw the hottest day of the year, so far, coinciding with this year’s Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Fun Day on the 10th of June, with the mercury hitting 30oC. Still the crowds came to revel in the sights and sounds of the day. The afternoon kicked off with a Motorcade of Vintage and Classic vehicles resulting in a display of over 90 cars, bikes and even a few classic Fire Engines. There were numerous bands performing on our 2 stages with plenty of food, drinks, and ice creams to enjoy while you sat back and watched the show. There was also lots to keep everyone happy from shopping at the numerous stalls to raffles, games, Fair Ground rides plus the ever-popular Fun Dog Show with categories ranging from the Cutest Puppy to the Fastest Biscuit Muncher.
Unfortunately, with the weather as hot as it was numbers were down on last year, which was very well attended as our first main event since the cancellations and isolations of the Pandemic, but first estimates are showing we will have made about £7,500.00 for charity and all wrapped in a brilliant, funfilled community event.
Obviously, this event takes a huge amount of organising and Bishop’s Waltham Rotary are always on the lookout for new members, or just new friends to help out on the day. If you feel you would like to know more or just want to know what Rotary is about, get in touch via our website.
Like our Facebook page or take a look at our website for updates on what is going on, what we have been up to and how you can help us help others!
