Bespoke Kitchens & Furniture

One of the UK's top reviewed kitchen companies on Houzz

Happy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street.

We have never had less than a 5 star review and have won the HOUZZ best

of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses. We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and unexciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are

just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.

So whether you need an amazing kitchen, utility, bedroom, coffee bar with custom pod storage, office, media wall or living room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours, light fittings, bar stools, artwork and can even recommend great pots and pans.

sitting flat on the bottom of the vase which can create a seal.

5. Cut the twine holding the bouquet together and gently lower the flowers into your vase. Check there are no leaves below the water line as these will quickly start to decompose adding to the bacteria in the vase.

Nestled in the depths of the Test Valley lies

Featherstone’s English Flower Co. A mixed flower farm and florist growing huge quantities of beautiful cut flowers used for weddings, funerals, events, workshops and bouquets. The farm was founded by us, Katie and Jess. We are both passionate about British flowers due to their romance, elegance and that they can be grown in a way which promotes nature and protects the environment.

Here, we share our guide for enjoying your flowers in your home for as long as possible: We do not use or include flower food or floral preservatives with our flowers. This is a conclusion we have reached after lots of trials and research into maximising vase life as well as

our commitment to not using chemicals on the flowers while growing in the field.

1. Clean your vase: A clean vase is one of the most important steps to ensuring maximum vase life. A dirty vase will contain bacteria which clog up stems and prevent them taking up water which will significantly reduce the flowers' vase life.

2. Fill your vase to about 2/3rds full with cool, clean water.

3. Carefully remove the wrapping from the bouquet. All our wrapping can be re-used, recycled or composted at home.

4. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle with a sharp, clean pair of scissors or secateurs. This increases the surface area available for the flower to take up water and prevents the stem

6. Place your flowers in a cool room, out of direct sunlight and away from draughts. It is a good idea to keep your flowers away from the fruit bowl as ripening fruit give off the gas ethylene which will also make your flowers go over more quickly.

7. Change the water in the vase regularly and recut the stems: For the longest vase life change the water and clean the vase at least every other day to prevent the bacteria building up. Recut the stems at the same time, again at the 45 degree angle to refresh the flower's drinking capacity.

8. Remove any flowers as they start to fade or go over.

Gift bouquets can be ordered online and delivered within a 20 mile radius of Stockbridge and are always crafted from seasonal flowers from the field or other British growers in the South West.

Rachel Hudson

Illustrating The Natural World: one small square at a time…

Hampshire illustrator, Rachel Hudson, creates artwork that reconnects people with the natural world, through information, greetings cards, editorial, publishing and site-specific projects. Lively, yet authentic, her artwork evokes the spirit of a place and captures a fleeting encounter with nature.

From Suffolk to The Shetlands

This year, it is Rachel’s greetings cards that are making an impact, following her debut at Progressive Greetings Live at the Business Design Centre in London, (the world’s only greetings card trade fair). Today, you can discover her illustrations in independent bookshops and gallery gift shops from Suffolk to The Shetlands, Hampshire to the Hebrides. Meanwhile, new Winter Birds Christmas Cards are available from the RSPB and eight of her best-selling illustrations have been licensed by the Welsh publisher, Silver Birch Cards. Further afield, from February 2024, a collection of 10 designs entitled, Vie Sauvage, will be sold in bookstores throughout France, published by Zazous Editions.

Valuing Nature

Inspired by daily walks in Hampshire and holidays along the British coast, Rachel’s designs showcase the seasons and celebrate the often overlooked. Her collections include Coastal & Seaward, Wayside & Woodland, Winterscapes and Oddities & Rarities. Rooted in conservation knowledge and a life-long love of nature, Rachel’s art cards for nature lovers aim to help people to feel good and value nature. On the reverse of each card, you can find information about the species featured on the front of each card.

Environmental stewardship lies at the heart of Rachel’s business which is powered by green energy and uses materials that are responsibly sourced. All cards are blank inside, printed in the UK using FSC certified board, matched with eco- kraft envelope, supplied ‘naked’, without plastic or even biodegradable packets (which can also take years to decompose).

Why greetings cards?

Greetings cards are an affordable and environmentally-friendly way to make an emotional connection with a friend or family member. It is a way to show someone that you are thinking about them and can be thought-provoking too, perhaps reminding the recipient of a time and place that they have enjoyed. As a Publisher member of the Greetings Card Association, from 18-24 September, Rachel will be taking part in ‘Thinking of You Week’. All cards purchased and sent by Royal Mail will carry a special postmark with the message: Send a Card Deliver a Smile. A world-wide initiative, the aim is to ‘create a wave of love, caring and happiness’.

If you’d like to purchase Rachel’s cards, they are available to buy at www.rachelhudsonillustration.com You can find her in person at The Floral Fringe Fair in Loxwood Meadows, West Sussex from 2-3 September. For a 10% discount on Rachel’s Winter Birds Christmas Card Packs until 5 September, visit the RSPB’s online shop.

Bishop's Waltham Rotary Club

August 2023 News

A Night of music and food, plus a quiz thrown in for good measure. On the 30th of September Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club will be holding an evening of music and food at the Jubilee Hall in Bishop’s Waltham with Otterbourne Brass providing the musical accompaniment.

We are thrilled that Otterbourne Brass are working with us again for this amazing event. They are a highly accomplished brass band who can trace their origins back to 1923 and have competed at county and national level for many years, and this year they will again be competing at the National Brass Band Championships Finals.

The evening will be made up of three parts, firstly a section of music to enjoy whilst at your table with a drink, there will then be a two-course meal followed by a musical quiz where the band will play music from films and television etc. for you to try and identify.

Tickets are £20 which will include all of your musical entertainment plus the two-course meal and of course there will be a raffle and also an auction at the end of the evening. To get your tickets contact us via the email at the bottom of this press release.

Droxford Village Hall, The Square, SO32 3PA

Droxford Parish Council has been awarded a Waste Prevention Community Grant Fund from Hampshire County Council to run a Toy Swap event in Droxford, on Saturday 16th September in the Village Hall from 12pm - 4pm.

Donate toys you no longer need Take toys that others have given Reduce landfill Save money

Reuse Recycle Declutter Meet friends

Refreshments provided by Wilfrid’s Cafe

There have been a number of initiatives designed to reuse, reduce waste and recycle in Droxford, including second-hand book events and table top sales, and now a toy swap has been set up as a cashless alternative to finding new toys, while helping to reduce waste and avoid landfill at the same time. It will provide an opportunity for parents and children to clear out their unwanted toys and donate a toy their child no longer needs in exchange for picking up another toy for free.

We hope that establishing a regular toy swap will be a great way to both bring people together and to remind everyone that what may be waste to one person may be happily re-used by somebody else – meaning a decrease in useful stuff ending up in the bin. It also means less strain on people’s pockets since it is estimated that in the UK the average spend per child on toys is £294 annually.

The event is open to all residents of the Meon Valley and beyond, who will be able to benefit in the following ways:

• Saving money - toys can be so expensive, and by attending our toy swap money is not being spent on new toys. If people are on a budget or struggling financially, as many currently are, a toy swap can provide accessibility for those who may need support and relieve some financial stress and anxiety.

• Connect with the community - meeting new people and connecting with others is not only good for our mental health and overall wellbeing, but can also play a part in tackling the climate crisis locally through education on avoiding landfill and waste and sharing the concept of reduce, re-use, recycle.

• Save on waste - there is a lot of packaging with children's toys and if purchases are delivered to people’s homes, there are shipping materials in addition that end up in the waste or recycling.

• Declutter - children can grow out of or lose interest in toys quickly. A toy swap can help people declutter, as well as pass on toys that are in good condition for other children to enjoy. It is hoped that this will be the first of many swap events in Droxford. If you would like further information, or would like to get involved, please email the clerk on clerk.droxfordpc@gmail.com

King of the River

Of the many birds that frequent our chalk streams, the brightly-plumed kingfisher is perhaps the most celebrated. Ours are actually Eurasian kingfishers – one of over 100 such species worldwide, including Australia’s laughing kookaburra. Our local kingfishers make a high-pitched call when in flight, so keep your eyes peeled if you hear several short whistles.

Unlike many of our feathered friends, kingfishers make their nests by burrowing into riverbanks. The tunnels are barely wider than the birds themselves, but can be 90 centimetres long. After teaming up in February, breeding pairs will raise up to three clutches of eggs through the spring and summer. Of the two, you can spot the female by the reddish patch on her beak.

Though stocky, kingfishers are surprisingly small, weighing a mere 40 grams on average. Despite this, they earn their name with their impressive fishing skills. While they mostly eat sticklebacks and minnows, they will snack on insects, freshwater

shrimp and tadpoles. You may see them perched on low-hanging branches, waiting for their next meal to swim by.

Once their prey has been spotted, they will assess its depth before taking the plunge. A third eyelid draws shut when they enter the water, so the catch itself is done almost blindly. But if their aim is true, they return to their perch and deliver the final blow. Since they must eat their body weight in food each day, they will soon be back in the water.

A key factor in this formidable fishing ability is the shape of the birds’ beaks, the cross-section of which resembles a diamond with curved edges. When they dive, water flows along their beaks instead of being pushed away, allowing for a seamless entry. In fact, this shape is so effective that it inspired the design of the Japanese bullet train!

Sadly, our local kingfishers have to contend with a number of pressures. Flooding can threaten their nests and prevent them from fishing. Disturbance can scare them

away from their nests, stopping them from feeding their young. Chemical and nutrient pollution can affect insect, amphibian, and fish numbers, reducing their food supply.

One of the best ways to support these beautiful birds is by keeping their homes in a healthy condition. To learn more about our chalk streams and their wonderful wildlife, visit www.hiwwt.org.uk/winterbournes

The Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Sustainable woodcarving studio wins South Downs trophy in heritage awards

and the restoration of a rare agricultural 19th-century Grade II listed The Byre, near Polegate. King Edward VII Estate, in Midhurst, achieved two awards for further improvements and extensions to the main ex-sanatorium building, as well as its walkways and courtyards.

A sustainable studio space for a nationallyrenowned woodcarver was the winner of the coveted South Downs Award for 2023.

The Woodcarvers Studio in Nyewood, West Sussex, was a worthy winner at the annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards.

Professional artist and wood sculptor Alison Crowther was presented the award by Ian Phillips, in his last engagement as ViceChair of the National Park Authority.

The special award is sponsored by the National Park and our judging team said:

“A hugely well-crafted building sitting comfortably in the landscape, which has enhanced the area. The use is an exemplary economic activity for a rural location and demonstrates that the right type of use can have a positive impact on landscape both within and beyond the site boundaries when adopting a site-selection and design ethos that sits well with the purposes of the National Park.”

The South Downs National Park saw 15 Sussex Heritage Trust Award winners and six commendations across 10 categories, from residential schemes to public and community buildings to commercial projects. Each were presented a handcrafted slate plaque by the Trust’s President Lord Egremont.

The awards are sponsored by Irwin Mitchell, as the headline sponsor, alongside other well-known Sussex companies Gravetye Manor, Savills, Henry Adams, Valley Builders, Covers, Harvey’s Brewery, Lawson Commercial, Pilbeam Construction, RH and RW Clutton and Toovey’s Auctioneers.

Relocation: the risks and pitfalls for employers

Due to changes in ways of working since the pandemic or in response to the economic slowdown, some employers are downsizing their premises and asking employees to relocate to new premises or hubs. Linda Wilson, Employment Partner at MacDonald Oates takes a look at the key contractual, redundancy and discrimination issues.

Contractual mobility clause

The employees’ contracts of employment may contain a mobility clause that allows the employer to change the place of work. The wording first needs to be carefully checked to understand the scope of the right.

Secondly, the employer’s right to insist on relocation may be curbed by the implied term of trust and confidence, which stops the employer acting in a way that seriously damages or could seriously damage the relationship between the employer and employee, without having a good reason.

A breach could allow the employee to resign and claim constructive dismissal if they have two years’ service.

Thirdly, an employer needs to enforce this clause in a reasonable way. Usually, that involves discussion with the individual and giving plenty of notice. Finally, insisting on the employee relocating under a mobility clause must be done in good faith and not done in an ‘arbitrary, capricious or irrational’ way. Provided there is a business reason for moving the location this hurdle should be cleared.

Mobility clause and employee refuses

If the employee resists the move, even though the contract allows the employer to require the employee to relocate, the employer may have no option but to dismiss the employee for failure to obey a lawful instruction. If the instruction was reasonable and not in breach of contract, the dismissal for misconduct could be fair and the employee would not be entitled to a redundancy payment.

No mobility clause and workplace still operating

Where the existing workplace is not being closed but some employees are required to relocate, without a mobility clause the employer cannot insist on the employee relocating. The employer needs the employee’s agreement to the change through a consultation process. We can help you ensure that this consultation exercise covers all the necessary elements, including ways of mitigating the impact on the employee.

No mobility clause and close of workplace

If the trigger for the relocation is that the business will stop operating from the current premises, this is likely to fall within the statutory definition of a redundancy. There may be some uncertainty around the employee’s place of work, for instance if they work at two bases. We can discuss this with you.

Discrimination issues

The consultation exercise should address any individual circumstances that could create a discrimination risk. This could involve reasonable adjustments for a disabled employee or the impact of the move on childcare arrangements for a female employee. Employers need to be alert to these issues.

How we can help

A relocation programme can be disruptive and may create the risk of employment tribunal claims and loss of staff. We can help you ensure that it is well planned, and the risks are mitigated as far as possible, to minimise the negative impact on your business.

Your local independant fashion retailer at Davina's

With recent concerns over the rising cost of fuel, energy and food, many have questioned their expenditure on clothing, as somewhere economies can be made. Also, the continued effects of Covid with the reduction in social interaction, growth of home working and an 'anything goes' attitude towards dressing have all had a negative influence on shoppers' habits.

This has impacted adversely on independant retail shops, like ours, resulting in closures.

We are fighting back against this trend by encouraging ladies to buy quality clothes again, with the benefit of better cut, better material and greater durability, in our *50% off everything sale during September (including mother of the bride).

Why not come along and see what wonderful bargains we have to offer, especially if you have a wedding in the foreseeable future. We look forward to serving you and reintroducing you to the benefits of buying quality again.

Fried Potatoes with Bacon, Mushrooms & Onions

SERVES 4 - 6 PEOPLE

INGREDIENTS

• 750-800g baby potatoes (any waxy kind)

• Sea salt

• 200g bacon lardons

• Olive oil or avocado oil

• 1 large onion thinly sliced

• 300g of chestnut mushrooms or other mushrooms of choice - sliced

• 2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary (optional)

• Freshly ground black pepper

• Handful of parsley or dill - chopped

METHOD

Put the potatoes in a pot, cover with water and salt well. Bring to a boil and boil until just cooked, 10-15 minutes. Drain the potatoes, let cool, and slice thinly.

Meanwhile, heat a large cast iron pan (or another non-stick pan) over medium heat and add enough oil to coat the bottom. Add the onion, bacon and a pinch of salt, and saute for 7 minutes, until the onion is translucent. Add the mushrooms and rosemary, if using, stir once to coat in the oil, then let the mushrooms brown, undisturbed, for about 10-15 minutes. Once the mushrooms are browned and all the liquid they release evaporates, season them with more salt and black pepper, mix to coat. Remove the mushrooms and onions from the pan and set aside for now.

Wipe the pan if needed. Add more oil to generously coat the bottom of the pan and turn the heat up to medium-high. Add about a third of the potatoes to the pan and season them with salt. The potatoes should cover the pan in one layer and shouldn't be too crowded. Fry the potatoes for about 5 minutes, until the undersides are golden and crispy, then flip and fry the other side for another 5 minutes, or until golden.

Transfer the fried potatoes to a plate and continue frying the rest of the potatoes in batches. Add more oil between batches if necessary.

Once all the potatoes are done, return them to the pan along with the mushrooms and onions, mix carefully until warmed back through. Serve the potatoes and mushrooms right away, sprinkled with parsley or dill.

St Swithun’s students headed to universities after impressive A Level Results

St Swithun's School is delighted to announce another year of strong A-Level results, showcasing the academic accomplishments of its students. With a dedication to nurturing bright minds and fostering a supportive learning environment, the school is proud to celebrate the achievements of its A-Level students in the 2023 examinations.

86% of A levels were graded A* to B against a backdrop of a decline in top grades nationally to pre-pandemic levels. Half of U6 girls achieved AAA or higher, 61% AAB or above and 73% ABB or better.

The Class of 2023 has therefore been accepted into prestigious universities, with students securing placements at world class institutions such as Bristol, Cambridge, Durham, Exeter, Imperial, LSE, Manchester, Oxford, St Andrews, UCL, Warwick and York while 10% of students gained places at Oxbridge. The St Swithun's School community eagerly awaits the future success of our graduates and the positive impact they will undoubtedly make in their chosen fields.

100% of A level results were graded A* to B in the twelve individual subjects of art and design, Classical civilisation, English literature, further mathematics, German, Greek, history of art, Latin, music, product design, psychology and Spanish. In addition, all the students who undertook the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) gained A* to B grades, with 86% at A* and A. The EPQ is equivalent to half an A level and is held in high esteem by universities for the skills of self-directed, independent study that it cultivates.

Headmistress Jane Gandee said, "The success of our A-level students is testament to their hard work and intellectual curiosity, in addition to the support provided by our dedicated staff. At St Swithun's School, we strive to instil a passion for lifelong learning, and these results exemplify our students' genuine interest in their studies.”

Head of Sixth Form, Nick Fyfe, also shared his delight stating, "We are immensely proud of our students' achievements and their personal growth during their time in our Sixth Form. Our tailored support and guidance have allowed them to flourish both academically and as well-rounded individuals."

Maite, a high-achieving student at St Swithun's School, has excelled in this year's A-Level examinations. Obtaining five A*, she has consistently demonstrated a thirst for knowledge and a dedication to their studies. With these exceptional results, she is ready to embark on a promising future studying Medicine at Cambridge.

Another outstanding performer, Emily has achieved an impressive set of A-Level results, securing A* A* A. Her academic journey at St Swithun's School has been characterised by commitment to academic and sporting excellence exemplified by her role as Head of Sport. With these exceptional results, she is ready to embark on a promising future pursuing Geography at Durham University.

We are also thrilled to announce that our Head Girl, Jamie S, has achieved exceptional A-Level results. Throughout her tenure as Head Girl, Jamie has demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication, leaving an indelible impact on the school community. As she begins her journey to Oxford University to study History and Economics, we are confident that she will continue to shine brightly, making a positive difference in all she undertakes.

When The Sun Shone - The Fun Never Stopped!

Remember those heady days of summer …. when carnivals and fetes provided great entertainment for all the family? Bishop's Waltham Carnival, Swanmore Fete, Droxford Fair, Colden Common Fair and The Rainbow Centre Fareham were just a few of the events the Meon Valley Lions’ BBQ and Games turned up to this summer. They helped provide a great day out whilst raising essential funds for those

Meet the Addams Family at Titchfield this autumn

who need our help. It was so lovely to see so many people out enjoying themselves after the last few years of restrictions.

In particular the Swanmore Fete, where the Meon Valley Lions organise the whole show, was such a fantastic day. From the dog show, to racing pigs, traditional fairground attractions, over 40 stall holders, storytelling for the little one, music all day, beer tent and of course the BBQ - what a day. And a massive thanks to the 40 helpers, without whom we just couldn’t put on the show.

Fundraising via these events is one thing but what do we actually do with the money raised? In recent months we have:

a heart-warming story of love, family and friendship… with a twist!

Jody Brown is the director of The Addams Family:

“The Addams Family has all the makings of a real spectacle of musical theatre. Every character within the show is unique and brings something special to the dynamic of the show as a whole. Seeing how they all interact and the naturally funny moments it creates are something I particularly enjoy.

• repaired or replaced white goods for families in need;

• donated £1,000 to the Wickham Food Pantry;

• donated £1,000 to the Rainbow Centre for the wonderful work they do;

• provided a mobility device for a local disabled youngster;

• supported several Youth applications to fund various trips;

• run our minibus every week to support essential clubs for the elderly.

Why Not Join Us?

If you’d like to join our merry band of helpers or join us at Meon Valley Lions Club, drop us a line via our website: Meon Valley Lions Club (CIO) - Feedback welcome. It’s not all work, we have plenty of fun too, not least our pub nights on the 3rd Monday of every month. Come and join us.

Meteoric trip to jet age museum!

Members of the Daedalus Aviation and Heritage Group, DA&HG based in Gosport, headed off this month to South West England with cameras at the ready. Their visit this time was to Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton near Cheltenham which is the UK’s busiest general aviation airport.

The fun, musical comedy with the family that is just that little bit different!

The Addams Family comes to Titchfield Festival Theatre this October with its fantastic mix of characters, laugh out loud comedy, big chorus numbers and dancing for a fabulous feast of entertainment: offering everything that a musical should be! The show is also the first musical in TFT’s new Arden Theatre in St Margarets Lane, Titchfield.

Wednesday Addams is Morticia and Gomez’s daughter – the ultimate Princess of Darkness. She is all grown up and has a shocking secret that only Gomez knows…. she’s fallen in love with a sweet young man from a respectable family.

With his cherished Morticia in the dark, will Gomez manage to keep his daughter’s secret until the two families meet for a fateful dinner with hilarious consequences? Join them, plus Uncle Fester, Lurch, Pugsley and more for

“I think the audience will enjoy seeing everything they already love about the wellknown Addams Family characters. The cast are incredible and are embedding the qualities of their quirky characters in a way that creates some real belly laugh moments. Top this off with their amazing vocal abilities and choreography using a broad range of stylesthere’s really something for everyone!”

With an extraordinary original score, from the writers of multi award-winning hit musical Jersey Boys, with music and lyrics by the Tony Award nominated Andrew Lippa, The Addams Family is sure to entertain whether you're 12 or 312!

The Addams Family performs from 4 – 14 October 2023 in the Arden Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield.

For more information including booking tickets please go to http://titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/ or contact our Box Office on 0333 666 3366.

The aim of the fifteen Club members was to visit the JET AGE MUSEUM situated on the northern side of the airport to experience aviation history!

As Chair of the group, Terry Coombes, said “The exhibits are largely representative of aircraft and engines that have local connections with the area, including Dowty that produced propeller designs. The mighty Gloster Javelin is a centrepiece of the display. Members were photographed in front of WS807 one of the final Night Fighter Meteors that saw service locally at the Air Navigation School at RAF Thorney Island.”

After the museum visit, the group went to the airport itself where a fine restaurant is situated and had excellent food whilst watching the comings and goings of the training aircraft that were in the circuit.

Members returned home with many images taken and with much more knowledge on Gloster aircraft inventions. There was also a classic car show happening at the museum, bringing back many memories to most of us.

A fallen leaf is nothing more than a summer's wave goodbye

Feeling more than a little cheated of your summer? Whereas some in the UK have been basking in beautiful sunlight many of us are already reaching for our woolly jumpers. Even the local pubs have been known to stick a few defeated logs on the fire in an attempt to warm up the patrons with more than just the spirits. Yes, as we welcome yet another new month, many of us are feeling this peculiar transitional moment between the seasons.

As many families are sending the kids back to school and yet another autumn term rolls around, for adults too, this time of year feels like the harbinger of change. Perhaps some are starting new jobs or watching as their little ones progress into the next stage of their education or early work life.

Many of us still feel that back-to-school atmosphere at this time of the year, even if the days of new shoes and slightly too big school jumpers complete with a raid on the local stationery shop are long behind us.

For some of us, the summer has still been busy even if the weather has been more than a little disappointing. From tripping around from festival to festival, planning long-awaited holidays, attending weddings and trying to be spontaneous, it can be exhausting and lead to burn out.

Many of us though have our thoughts turned to the impending wintry weather and the nights slowly beginning to draw in. Instead of this beautiful time of year being a moment before the doldrums set in, actually this month can be all about preparing for a successful and enjoyable quarter ahead.

Perhaps instead of lamenting the months gone we should look forward to the new beginnings. In centuries gone by this was the beginning of a time of year when the labours of the previous months were beginning to be enjoyed, latter crops were beginning to flourish, apples were beginning to fall from the trees and the season of jamming and pickling was beginning to be enjoyed.

In the 21st century, our productivity is not always as dependent on the weather. Many of us still work 9-5 come rain or shine. School uniforms still need washing, shopping trips and nights out with our friends have little dependency on long, bright days or shorter, darker ones other, perhaps, than which shoes or boots we should wear.

How do you fancy a nostalgic autumn ahead? You know the ones, when you may have returned to school after the seemingly never-ending freedom of the school summer holidays and the air just feels a little different. Summer shoes and attire mismatch with early apple crumbles and winter warmers. The mornings are beginning to be a little crisper and thoughts of the long and dark nights lie ahead. It can be a cosy feeling.

For many people this time of year provides a nice opportunity for a reset. Never mind what has gone in the previous months and whether you managed to achieve all your summer goals, what is coming up on your horizon? Perhaps you’d like to plan a cheeky last-minute holiday or maybe you are keen to push towards your health and fitness goals.

Instead, applying the principle of enjoying a reset day but stretched across several weeks can be a rewarding and nourishing experience that helps us to live in the moment instead of pining for a time and season and yes, sometimes, even an atmosphere, that might feel out of reach.

How about prioritising some well-placed wellness activities or maybe you would just like to enjoy the season ahead, complete with country walks in some of Hampshire’s most beautiful natural spots. This time of year doesn’t have to signal a goodbye to summer and its fun. Why not set yourself a local photography challenge and take the opportunity to go outside, get some extra steps in and collate a beautiful album of a Hampshire autumn? With the stunning national parks at our fingertips - and toetips - Hampshire provides boundless opportunities to enjoy the spellbinding nature around us.

Have you taken a tastebud tour of some of the county’s best ciders or sourced local ingredients to make a meal from scratch? As well as supporting local businesses, season-appropriate activities help us to live in the present, especially when that involves what we eat and drink. Food and drink is a mood-setter and that can be used for considerable good.

Why not visit one of the many local gardens to enjoy a little inspiration for the autumn plants to put into your own flower beds and outdoor spaces? Chances are, if local gardens are able to grow a particular variety, it’s possible to replicate similar conditions in your own gardens.

However you decide to enjoy the next few weeks, I hope that you have the opportunity to create some lovely memories and enjoy some rewarding activities. Until next month!

Meon Valley U3A

Somebody told me the other day that they did not know what U3A stands for! It, of course, stands for the university of third age. Our U3A - the Meon Valley one, meet at the Wickham community centre where about 40 of our 80 members unite twice monthly during the autumn/ winter and spring lecture seasons. For me U3A is the opportunity to meet friends, new and old across a cup of tea, gain new knowledge on all sorts of subjects and gives elderly people a friendly club to attend regularly.

The “university” part of the acronym is learning from lectures and the opportunity to join small groups for, reading, art appreciation, petanque, country strolling and even Egyptology. We also organise 3 outside visits of an educational nature during the summer. We are NOT a university in fact! So what age groups are eligible? Well as far as I know we do not ask members’ ages. However, “the third age” rather gives it away, allied to the fact that we meet during the day, rather suggests suitability for the retired.

Our September lectures are:

Dr Lyndon Palmer talking on the amazing Isle of Lewis chess sets on 5/9/at 2pm. This is followed by Mike Hollis talking on WW1 Q ships, on 19/9.

Our October lectures are:

Dr. Jenny Burkett talking on Eye Diseases at 2pm on Tuesday 3rd of October. And on 17 October Jim Busby will talk on the History of Fareham High Street.

Guests are very welcome to try us out. Why not give it a whirl? You may well be pleasantly surprised and wish to come again! Why not learn all there is to know about these amazing historic ivory chess pieces. Have you even heard of Q ships? What do you know about cataracts? The eye sort not the river ones! Or find out the secret history of the naughty ladies of Union Street (off High Street) Fareham. So come along, you will get a warm welcome and a cup of tea!

'China's Influence on English Ceramics'.

A talk by Professor Nigel Wood presenting a fascinating insight into how Chinese export wares helped to drive the development of ceramics. Local potters' responses to Chinese export wares have helped to drive the development of Eurasian, East Asian and South East Asian ceramics since the ninth century CE, with a common pattern of importation and imitation, closely followed by innovation. English ceramics are no exception to this principle. They show a particularly rich response to imported Chinese wares in areas as various as design, material, technology and organisation of production. The Allen Gallery's collection illustrates this story well, with its important holdings of Staffordshire red stoneware, tin glazed earthenware, white porcelain and twentieth century studio ceramics of the 'Leach

Curtis Museum

There is a small exhibition about the (old) Alton Sports Centre Health and Fun Club. It was formed in 1979, and offered a wide range of activities to anyone from the surrounding area who was over 50. The then manager of the Centre, Bob Tedder, was instrumental in the early days. The club featured as a role model for the National Sports Council's 50-plus campaign, and inspired other sports centres to set up similar schemes. The exhibition is on the first floor of the Museum.

Museum Trail

We regularly have a free trail for children to follow while exploring the Museum - this autumn's is called Match the tree to the leaf. Unscramble the letters on the clues to find which leaf matches which tree, and discover some fascinating facts.

West Meon Music Festival - A festival with wide appeal

Church while in the afternoon the beautiful twelfth century Church of Our Lady at Warnford hosts the Gonzaga Band, one of the country's leading specialist early music groups exploring, the works of Monteverdi and his contemporaries. Formed by cornettist Jamie Savan in 1997 the band takes its name from the Gonzaga family of Mantua who employed Claudio Monteverdi as their maestro della musica at the turn of the seventeenth century. Jamie is joined by soprano Faye Newton and Steven Devine on chamber organ.

Sunday 17th September at West Meon church she will be giving a morning recital, enticingly called “Les Chemins d’Amour"(Pathways of Love) featuring songs by French composers including Fauré, Poulenc, Gounod and Debussy.

The French theme continues for the “Festival Finale” in the afternoon with works by Fauré, Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Françaix and Bizet. Full details of all concerts are now available at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk and the box office is now open.

There’ll be some exciting musical experiences to enjoy at this year’s West Meon Music Festival (14th to 17th September) with brilliant awardwinning young performers and a dramatic renaissance band joining the festival’s founders – the internationally acclaimed Primrose Piano Quartet.

The festival, now in its thirteenth year, opens with the event’s founders the Primrose Piano Quartet, performing Brahms’ A major Piano Quartet as well as Mozart's Duo for Violin & Viola in B flat, and Schubert's “Arpeggione” Sonata for Cello and Piano.

Friday evening sees a recital by Thomas Kelly – winner of numerous international piano competition prizes – followed by “Who’s afraid of Arnold Schoenberg?” an informal late night concert by the Primrose exploring his work.

On Saturday 16th September the festival spreads out across the Meon Valley: in the morning the strings of the Primrose will perform a version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at East Meon’s historic All Saints

New Season of Meon Voices Choir Begins

On Saturday evening the Primrose are back at West Meon Church with the chance to hear one of the country's rising stars when double bass player Will Duerden will join the Primrose for Schubert's Trout Quintet. Will rose to prominence after reaching the Strings Category Final of the 2018 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and this year has been selected as one of six young musicians to be supported by the Young Classical Artists Trust. Will has already had several significant new works specially written for him, with premières in Milan and London.

The Sunday morning brings a recital of French song with exciting young soprano Harriet Burns. Since graduating from the Guildhall Opera School, British soprano Harriet Burns has won a raft of international awards including second prize and German Lied Award at 2022 Concours Musical International de Montréal the Compulsory Song Prize and Recital Prize at the International Vocal Competition in s'Hertogenbosch and first prize at the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards at the Wigmore Hall. The evening concerts are candlelit and include a glass of wine. The morning concerts include coffee and biscuits and the afternoon concerts tea and cake.

The Saturday morning concert, Goldberg Variations, is at All Saints East Meon, and the Saturday afternoon concert, the Gonzaga Band, is at the Church of Our Lady, Warnford. The Primrose Piano Quartet is one the country’s leading ensembles and its acclaimed discography includes classical favourites as well as many unjustly neglected works by early twentieth century British composers. Their major commissions include piano quartets written for them by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Anthony Payne. The quartet appears regularly in London at Kings Place and the Conway Hall and has recently toured Denmark, Germany and Bulgaria. The quartet is a leading exponent of historically informed performance and Its latest recording of the complete Brahms piano quartets, made in Vienna on authentic pianos of the period, was highly recommended on Radio 3’s “Record Review”.
