Goodwood’s role in the Second World War and the creation of RAF Westhampnett within the estate. The race circuit came into being after the war, and Goodwood’s glory years were 1948 to 1966, when the circuit closed for racing. A successful campaign was fought in the 1990s to return racing to Goodwood, resulting in the Goodwood Revival, first run in 1998. Harry Sherrard’s dedication to all things motoring saw him compete extensively and become a demonstration driver for Aston Martin, amongst many other adventures including publishing his motoring biography in 2014 'Taking Part'. He has a 30-year association with Goodwood instructing at the circuit, being involved with the campaign for the return of racing, and driving in both the Revival and the Festival of Speed. JANUARY SALE 40% OFF We moved into our house in Broughton and although the kitchen was serviceable its layout did not work for us. We looked at the usual suspects and found Happy Kitchens advertising in a local magazine. We invited several kitchen companies and Happy Kitchens in to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing, he also advised us about disposing of our existing kitchen and where we could get the best deal on our new kitchen appliances. The kitchen is fabulous, the fitting team are fantastic, well skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. I would happily recommend the Happy Kitchen team to anyone. Mr Hensman

Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

There is so much joy to be had from choral singing, as well as many other benefits. Singing helps regulate your heart rate, improves your mental health and strengthens the feeling of togetherness you have with your community. If this is something you are interested in, the popular Bishops Waltham-based Meon Voices four-part choir starts practising again in January for the Spring season. Weekly practices are held in the United Free Church, Basingwell Street in Bishop’s Waltham each Monday evening 7.30 – 9.30 p.m., September – December and January –April. Maybe you have always wanted to join a choir but are worried about auditioning? Never fear, there are no auditions! Reading music helps, but is not mandatory – the choir gives you support. All pieces are provided not only on sheet music, but also electronically so you can listen to your parts and learn them by heart in the privacy of your own home before practising with the choir. It’s really rewarding. The choir has members from all local villages, and is formed from the four main vocal ranges: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. Although each range is currently well-represented by existing members, vacancies come up at the start of most seasons and the organisers welcome applications to join regardless of voice type, to join the waiting list for when vacancies arise. And remember, no audition necessary. For further information please contact Phil 01489 579078 or email coundleypj@yahoo.com or Maureen 01489 903359 email: alan@ agbuckland.plus.com.

AUSTRALIA, WHERE THE SUMMER NEVER ENDS

C

hristmas is over and we still have 2 months of winter to go, so why not cheer yourselves up with a trip down under to the ever-sunny Australian coastline or give yourself something to look forward to by planning a trip for later in the year. At Amity Travel we are experts in tailor made travel and in particular self-drive and escorted touring around Australia. The most popular itinerary for first time visitors to Australia is an east coast extravaganza taking in the Icons of Sydney and the Barrier Reef as well as some of the less wellknown sites but equally inspiring such as Fraser Island and Lamington National Park. Soft adventure is very is very

popular, Treetop walks and 4 wheel drive tours through the dense sub-tropical rainforest, with time out at Lake Mckenzie to swim in the crystal clear waters and marvel at your surroundings, that could easily be mistaken for an idyllic beach in the Indian Ocean, all of this and much more can be found as meander up the east coast. A typical itinerary will include time in Sydney; this exciting and vibrant city always has plenty to offer from breathtaking Harbour views to singing waiters at the Opera House. Once out of town the 800-mile drive north to Brisbane has plenty of opportunities to break the journey and you can expect the warmest of welcomes with The Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and Port Stephens amongst the most popular stopover destinations. As you amble up the coast your time will be easily spent with bushwalking, fine dinning, wine tasting, dolphin watching, surfing, in fact the list is almost endless. On arrival in Brisbane we recommend that you hand back the car and let Queensland Rail take control, the journey North to Cairns on the Spirit of Queensland, is a fantastic experience where you get the opportunity unwind and relax in the company of you fellow passengers. The rail journey north to Prosperine and the Whitsundays is very much part of the whole holiday experience rather than just a means of travel. Try out the new RailBed an Australian first, the revolutionary RailBed is a spacious and comfortable seat by

FEATURE day that includes a state-of-the-art personal entertainment system, a 240v PowerPoint and a USB point. In the evening, the on-board team convert the seat to a lie-flat bed with all linen provided, making sure that on arrival at Proserpine you will be fresh and ready for your Whitsunday adventure. These picture perfect islands with endless ways to explore will keep you busy for several days, with opportunities to visit the Great Barrier Reef, picnic on the pristine sand of Whitehaven Beach, stroll around Hamilton Island Harbour and visit Wild Life Hamilton Island, where you have the opportunity to cuddle a Koala before heading back to the mainland. The final leg of the journey is taken on the state-of-the-art Tilt Train from Proserpine to Cairns. Cairns is the central hub for Tropical North Queensland and has an array of accommodation options to suite all tastes and makes for a great base to visit the Reef and rainforests of this region. A day out on the Reef is an absolute must where you will have time to snorkel or dive and learn about this amazing eco system. For those who do not wish to get their feet wet there are glass bottom boat and semi submersible options. The Rain forest is the other great attraction, taking the Kuranda Rail service up the mountain makes for a wonderful experience for adults and children alike. Having spent time at Kuranda Village, what better way to return than by Skyrail. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway experience spans 7.5kms over Australia’s superb tropical rainforests. You’ll glide just metres above the rainforest canopy before descending through the canopy layers and deep into the heart of the forest at Skyrail’s two rainforest mid-stations for the ultimate tropical rainforest experience.

These are just a few of the many holiday ideas available; to find the perfect travel itinerary to suite your needs you should contact the Australia experts at Amity Travel Tailor Made, today.

to people's lives in the Meon Valley. In addition to helping Santa with his Sleigh the minibus has been busy taking revellers back and forth to their various Christmas lunches organised by local organisations including Meon Valley Carers,Wickham Lunch Club, Curdridge Lunch Club, Homestart and Open Sight.

MEON VALLEY LIONS CLUB NEWS SANTA OUT AND ABOUT IN THE MEON VALLEY The run-up to Christmas has always been a period when the Lions are extremely busy, whether it be fundraising with our Santa Claus trips through the local villages or distributing charity to those in need in the local community. This year was no different. Our Christmas collections with Santa out in his new sleigh, started in earnest in December - thanks for ALL your donations, it makes a big difference

SUPPORTING THE UNSUNG HEROES OF THE MEON VALLEY Meon Valley Food Bank are some of the unsung heroes in our area providing essential help when people need it, often when they have nowhere else to turn.We were proud to present them with a cheque for £300 to continue their work and provide some extra treats for families this Christmas. The Food Bank is located in Bishops Waltham. As you can imagine these hampers are well received and make a huge difference, especially at this time of year; without the support of the Lions and all the local people who support us we wouldn’t be able to do this so we would like to say a special thank you to everyone for the generous support throughout the year. SAMARITANS It is hard to think of a group of people who provide critical help when people need it most. In the UK the Samaritans respond to a call for help every six seconds; their ethos is No judgement. No pressure,There for

anyone who needs someone. More locally, the Portsmouth and East Hants Samaritans wanted help refurbishing their very tired and dated training facilities. All volunteers receive refresher training every 3 months. Meon Valley Lions donated £500 to pay for the refit. Samaritans are available every day, any time and are free to phone on 116 123 if help is needed. Fundraising - of course our donations to such worthy causes is only possible with the support we get from the public. A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY In January, the Lions embark on one of their more challenging activities in the fund-raising calendar, when we descend on Weston Shore, near Netley, for the annual charity Ford Fishing Festival. The weather can be interesting at this time of year, ranging from sub-zero temperatures to horizontal rain off the Solent! Next year will be the fishing competition’s 45th year and as last year, the monies raised from the event are donated to The Rose Road Association. They provide vital services for over 300 children and young people with severe physical disabilities, learning difficulties and/or autism from across Hampshire. If we’ve thawed out, we’ll provide a full report in our next news article. www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk

WHO ARE LAPIS CARE?

LIZ BLACKLOCK RGN, EN (G) MANAGING DIRECTOR

be Liz and I at the helm but it wouldn’t work without the fabulous team behind us.”

HAZEL DANIEL RGN, EN (G) - CARE DIRECTOR

Lapis Care are a local domiciliary care company based in Shedfield, run by two registered nurses- Liz Blacklock RGN, EN (G), Managing Director & Hazel Daniel RGN, EN (G), Care Director. Starting the business 5 years ago in Liz’s back garden, herself and Hazel have grown the business into a true vision of what they believe care should really be. A few words from Hazel, “In 2020 we will celebrate our fifth birthday. I still have very vivid memories of painting our first office in Liz’s garden in a very cold January and the excitement we felt that our plans were slowly coming together. We still pinch ourselves now to see how far we have come. The best thing though is that we have stayed true to the principle of looking after our staff so that we can give the best care we can to our clients. Liz and I first met over 20 years ago early on in our nursing careers, she left soon after I arrived on the ward, we were both working on, but I don’t hold it against her too much! We have been close friends for many years following our first meeting and have been with each other through lives triumphs and tragedies. We have had extensive nursing careers before beginning Lapis Care and bring with us a combined 60 years plus of knowledge and experience. “Liz has had extensive experience working in the community, both as a practice nurse and in district nursing, she has worked in palliative care and brings this knowledge and expertise to our clients who are reaching the end of their lives. Like Liz I have worked in District Nursing for some years and then spent many years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for people with Multiple Sclerosis. We both have teaching qualifications and therefore can pass our knowledge on to our staff in training. Between us Liz and I have encountered most situations and as we are both still active on the Nursing and Midwifery Council we remain up to date with our knowledge and competencies as nurses. We can turn our hand to most things and work as a team to achieve the best results we can. “It’s a real team effort at Lapis and we couldn’t do it without our wonderful staff, they work tirelessly and frequently go the extra mile with all our clients in supporting them to be cared for at home. WHY CHOOSE LAPIS CARE? You will benefit from our extensive knowledge and experience as registered nurses, and the professionalism that is integral to our practice. All of these values are instilled in our care team. Between them, Liz and Hazel have over 60 years of nursing experience, within a diverse rand of clinical settings and our staff are just as experienced, clocking up to over 245 years combined. We understand that expecting personal care can often be a stressful and sensitive time, for yourself and family. Independence and dignity is of our highest priority, therefore we ensure we provide care that is always person-centred and to suit your own specific needs. THE EXTRA MILE As well as personal home care we work hard to make a difference, we want all of our clients to live their best lives. We strongly believe that because you receive care doesn’t mean that you have to stop having dreams or ambitions and it definitely doesn’t mean that you have to stop being you. With this at the forefront of our minds we set up the Enrichment initiative. It started life in early 2018 as the ‘Bob the builder’ policy, basically if we can accommodate it for you, we will, or we will give it a really good try. So far we have taken a housebound client on a cruise ship tour and a lady wishes came true when she got to meet Daniel O’Donnell, We have also helped raise funding for a client to have an automatic leg raiser fitted and was over the moon she could finally stay up to watch a sun set in the summer. All of our fantastic staff love to spend time with all our clients and their families and our annual trip to the panto is always a great way to end the year. www.lapiscare.com

WELLB EING

1000TH EMERGENCY CALL Robert Shields, a Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responder, has now completed one thousand call outs to medical emergencies. Having retired from full-time employment 11 years ago, he came across the Community First Responders stand at the annual carnival. “Despite having no medical experience, I just knew this was for me. It would be a total change from anything I’d done before and it would keep me actively engaged with the community.” The Responders face a wide range of emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes and breathing difficulties. Sometimes they respond to cardiac arrests or other life-threatening incidents. Robert does not seem to worry about this, “We are well trained by the Ambulance Service to deal with what we see and the adrenalin soon kicks in to carry us through. We are not clinicians so we do not diagnose, but we perform a number of clinical observations on the patient and react accordingly to make them comfortable. We are the first on scene for well over 90% of callouts but back-up soon arrives in the form of a paramedic or ambulance crew to assist us to further help the patient.” Surely doing the same job for 11 years would be very boring for an active individual like Robert? “Not a bit of it. Every call-out is different and no two people are the same. In addition, we are being trained to take on more responsibilities which is very fulfilling. We now have use of a pneumatic lifting cushion for people who have fallen and we

respond to emergency life-line calls such as welfare cases. We can do all the clinical observations on our own and this can save an ambulance visit or an unneeded hospital stay.” The Responders aim to provide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week cover and this could seem a daunting commitment for anyone wanting to join the group. Robert disagrees, “We fit in the shifts of duty at times that we choose. You can be working or relaxing at home, you could be asleep, you could even be out shopping, as long as you can get to your your car in a couple of minutes or so and to be on your way.” Being a Responder is only one of the many activities Robert does for the community, but how does it rate amongst the others? “It’s top of the list! I find it exciting and relatively stress-free. I like meeting so many different people and I enjoy the supportive friendship of the Responder group. The icing on the cake, though, is bringing so much comfort to people in distress. I feel so proud to have served as a Responder for all this time.” Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders are considered by the South Central Ambulance Service to be one of the most active and responsive in their area. They were also the winners of the national Heart Safe Award in 2017 for the “Community Responder Scheme of the Year”. Robert, and the other Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders, can deservedly feel very proud. Understandably the whole team are really proud of their achievements. To win these awards back in 2017 was no easy feat, but to win again only two years later when up against such prestigious dental practices shows that Clear Dentistry mean business.

#CLEARWINNERS Bishops Waltham may be a quaint village in the sleepy Hampshire countryside but the team at Clear Dentistry are making a lot of noise in the world of dentistry. After opening their doors in 2016, the awards swiftly followed they picked up Best New Practice at The Private Dentistry Awards 2017 and UK Best Practice and Best Patient Care at The Dentistry Awards 2017. And they haven’t stopped there. 2019 has seen Clear Dentistry win a jaw dropping 5 awards, meaning that Hampshire can officially boast that it is home to one of the top dental practices in the country. Clear Dentistry took home ‘Best Practice South East’ at The Dentistry Awards. Followed up by ‘Practice of the Year South East’ and ‘Best Patient Care’ at The Private Dentistry Awards. They were also awarded ‘Best Cosmetic Dental Practice Hampshire’, and ‘Award for excellence in Implantology Southern England’ at the 2019 Global Health and Pharma Oral Health and Dentistry Awards.

‘We pride ourselves on being able to offer a wide range of the most up to date treatments to suit our patients needs all under one roof. We truly believe that prevention is better than cure and our approach is very much to identify things before they become an issue and educate our patients about what’s going on inside their mouths. Using intra-oral scanners, hand-held X-ray units and in mouth cameras we can show you in HD exactly what we see, so you understand what’s happening every step of the way. We can create a treatment plan for you that maps out what treatment is needed. Our transparent pricing means you can plan and know what it will cost before proceeding’. Amongst our wide range of treatments, we provide tooth straightening solutions, implant dentistry, and all aspects of cosmetic dentistry. There are many different options which are very specific to the individual, so for 2020, we are offering FREE consultations to all patients for these treatment solutions. Our consultations allow us to discuss your options with you and come with no commitment to book any further treatment. To book online please visit www.cleardentstry. co.uk, or call us on 01489 892240. TRANSPORTS OF DE-LIGHT © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2019 “Six. I counted six on the way home!” He burst into the kitchen, throwing his car keys onto the table. Wading through spaniels he pecked her on the cheek. The dogs wagged their tails hopefully. ‘Six’ sounded promisingly like ‘Snacks’.. “Christmas trees. Still decorated. In windows. It’s the 7th of January! Does no-one understand that there’s a time and place for these things? And after 12th night – which incidentally is not the 12th but the 5th January – the decs should come down. All of them. Otherwise” he looked grim “the goblins will come…” Catching a glimpse of the little boy he must once have been, she suppressed a snigger, as, with gusto, he continued. “People don’t realise that if they don’t take them down, they must leave them up until Candlemas.” Blimey – he really was superstitious. Who knew? Although, now she thought about it, he did take the decorations down promptly each and every year. Most helpful in that department. “Perhaps put something in the Parish mag. You know, to warn people.” She was joking, but “Yes…” he pondered this a moment with a serious expression. “Good idea..” With renewed enthusiasm he resumed his diatribe. “And the fairy lights. People are leaving them on all year round. It’s like some dystopian Narnia out there – always Christmas but never Winter.” But she could sympathise with ‘people’. Such a faff to fix these lights all over the front of your house and up your trees. The neighbours had hired a cherry picker to illuminate the poplar in their garden a few years ago. And she wasn’t surprised that it never returned to take them down again – must have cost a fortune. To be fair though, they did switch them off between Christmases. “Then there’s the pub.” Oh, hello – he was off again. “They’ve got those blue LEDs – not so much Comfort & Joy, more Accident & Emergency. And they’re on all year round.” Truthfully though, she could totally identify with the reluctance to take down the tree, un-decorate the house and switch off the fairy lights. Calling ‘Time’ on Christmas was to stare into the face of cold, wet, dark and dismal weeks before Spring sprang, or was sprung, or whatever. Weeks devoid of the excuse to have a mince pie with breakfast. And cradle the tub of Celebrations each evening, binge watching box sets. And eat party food, pork products in pastry and turkey seven ways. They’d already had a stab at Veganuary. Sadly killed off two days in, it was bludgeoned to death with use-by-date pigs-in-blankets. She

WWW.LUCIAFOSTERFOUND.COM sighed deeply and surreptitiously undid the top button of her jeans. Back in the day, her favourite antidote to the January blues had been a trip to the travel agent. The sleet on the high street forgotten, she would move slowly along the shelves, selecting a magazine here and there. A delicious pick and mix of pure escapism. Lugging the dozen or so glossies home, she’d spread them out on the sitting room carpet and study them assiduously. She’d loved the pre-photoshop pictures of sunburned holidaymakers with angry-looking mosquito bites. And lusted after the out-of-reach all-inclusives with their trendy wristbands, cool activities and, that holiday nirvana for parents everywhere, kids clubs.. Happy days. And back then, the overindulgence of the festive season was rectified by the perpetual motion of juggling a job and running about after the children. Mourning the metabolism of her youth, she seized her tablet and contemplated the annual January conundrum: To join a gym or not to join a gym. That was the question. Whether it was sound of mind to take membership and strive to use it enough to make the price per visit less alarming. Mmnnn. “And on the subject of lights” Crikey, was he still at it? “why do people wait until they’ve driven around the corner, or over the brow of the hill, and dazzled you before dipping their headlamps? Twin spots burned into your retinas, you cling to your steering wheel and hope, both.” He announced rather dramatically as he stomped off to have a de-stressing soak, spaniels trailing up the stairs in his wake. Watching him go, his current obsession with all things illuminated sparked a light bulb moment. She’d take him to see the Northern lights – he’d actually look forward to that. The gym… probably not so much. He’d be guaranteed a Narnian-esque helping of snow and bobbing around in the hot springs would be a tonic too – the kind not partnered with copious amounts of gin, like in December. Her suspiciously omniscient tablet obliged with adverts for cutprice mini-breaks. Bursting into the bathroom, it must be said that her announcement “We’re going to Iceland!” didn’t initially send him into a transport of delight.. “Must I come? Could you manage on your own, if you didn’t buy too much?” he muttered plaintively, slumping further into his bathwater. Poor darling, she thought, as she smoothed his wet, furrowed brow and elaborated, he really does need to lighten up..

PROFESSIONAL of your mind but if you were to die before the divorce went through some of your estate could pass to your spouse. 4. MINIMISE THE IMPACT ON CHILDREN Conflict can have some serious long-term effects on children. Studies have shown that it’s often not the separation or divorce that has an impact, but rather the conflict that comes from it that has a negative impact on their well-being.

FIVE THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN YOU’RE FACED WITH DIVORCE Jayne Llewelyn gives her tips for when you are facing one of life's most stressful times. 1. COMMUNICATION IS KEY Consider writing a list of points to discuss with your solicitor to make your time worthwhile, this will make sure your conversations are thorough and could avoid

your legal costs increasing due to more frequent communications. 2. KEEP YOUR PAPERWORK IN ORDER Gathering evidence of all assets and debts and collating paperwork such as bank statements and wage slips to take to your solicitor could speed up the process and create more clarity from the outset. 3. CONSIDER UPDATING YOUR WILL When you’re going through a divorce, making a will is probably not in the forefront

The annual award gives the winning network member the title of ‘Best Agent in the South’ and is awarded on a number of strict criteria including customer satisfaction and a high level of relocation work that the company is involved with, moving buyers in and out of the area, in addition to their own overall support for the Network itself and fellow members. Jason Guard commented “We are truly delighted to receive this award for the sixth time, which names us as the best estate agent in the South. Not only does it show our clients that we are not only one of Hampshire’s leading agents, but it also rewards the White and Guard team for being the very best at what they do”.

White and Guard were crowned ‘Best Agent in the South Region’ at the country’s largest property awards held in London this week by the Relocation Network. White and Guard received their 2019 Best Agent South Regional Award at an awards dinner which followed the Network’s National Conference Exhibition – the largest property conference in Europe. Held at the Plaza Riverbank Hotel London on Friday the 22nd November, the Awards Dinner was hosted by the well-known BBC broadcaster and presenter Huw Edwards.

Richard Tucker, Relocation Network’s Managing Director said “This National Award demonstrates White and Guard’s ability to deliver industry-leading business innovation, whilst also remaining consistent when it comes to delivering the highest standard of service to its clients and for being involved in the highest level of Relocation work. Congratulations to Jason and everyone at White and Guard for a thoroughly welldeserved win – you truly are the best of the best!”. www.whiteandguard.com

5. FIXED FEE MEETING Take advantage of meeting a solicitor under an initial fixed fee. Many solicitors offer this and it’s a costs effective way for you to meet a solicitor and get some general guidance. If you are asked to provide some information in advance about your finances or issues -do so. This will avoid you having to give information so your meeting will be more productive for you.

Now in our 26th year

Here at Pat Staples Interiors we are all about high quality, longevity and beautiful yet practical style. But that being said we like to incorporate a nod to what is currently in fashion too, and these are two trendy looks for 2020 that sit comfortably with us as designers of timeless interiors. The Painter’s Palette This is fun and free-spirited, a trend that takes inspiration from abstract expressionist artwork; bold geometrics, handdrawn sketches and blocks of colour.Translating from canvas this look is often best represented flat such as on blinds, upholstery, cushions, rugs and wallpapers. Use in any room you want to make a statement, and be bold with your colour combinations too, think reds and blue, or golds and blacks. Go Global This trend is a diverse celebration of globally-inspired patterns and textures. Fuse decorative Ikats, faded paisleys, intricate Indian block prints, luxurious printed velvets, hand woven rugs, rope tassels and pompoms, as you can never have too much pattern with this look. Think rich tones such as spicey reds, earthy terracotta and natural ochre pigments. It’s this authentic colour palette that ensures your living spaces will feel warm and inviting.

FEATURE

TALES FROM A HAMPSHIRE HEDGEROW As the days lengthen, the cold strengthens’ according to the old country maxim, but even now there are signs of spring, and one of the first to appear are the fluffy yellow catkins of the hazel. The catkins are the male flowers, but if you look closely it is possible to see little clusters of red threads which are the female flowers and flowering early gives hazel an important advantage as the leaves don’t interfere with the pollen flow. On the downs, gorse is also in flower with its luminous yellow flowers smelling of coconut. In the New Forest, where it is called ‘furze’, it has been used as a fuel, a medicine and is still an important winter food source for the ponies. Within the hedges, the holly, sloe and hawthorn berries have all been stripped bare but January is when ivy berries blacken and ripen providing much needed sustenance. According to the RSPB, ivy berries contain as many calories as a Mars bar and are greedily demolished by blackbirds. In churchyards and along drove roads, red juicy, but poisonous, yew berries are being consumed by thrushes and their exotic looking cousins from Scandinavia – fieldfares and waxwings. Known locally as ‘Hampshire Weed’, the yew sows itself liberally and, if undisturbed, can live for thousands of years. (Some churchyard yews are older than the church they stand alongside). The dense dark foliage can form wild anarchic shapes sometimes meeting over roads to form yew tunnels like the one near Farley Mount near Winchester. At the foot of the hedge, among the crumbling ruins of last year’s hogweed, the first snowdrops are making their appearance and by the end of the month we will see the early primroses and the bright yellow flowers of the lesser celandine. The scarlet goblet shaped elf cup fungi, like viscous jam tarts, are often in evidence too. The red stems of wild dogwood and golden willow set the river banks alight and higher up in the tall poplars, pom poms of pearly mistletoe are

easy to spot in the leafless trees. Grown from seed, one per berry, they are spread by mistle thrushes and blackcaps wiping their beak on the branch. As the cold grips the countryside, this is a time for survival. Herons will occasionally resort to eating moles and coots, jays will dig down through the snow for acorns using landmarks above as a guide and squirrels share nests to keep warm. Apart from the territorial outbursts of robins and wrens, many birds are mute but as February beckons you will hear the repeated phrases of the song thrush as it rehearses its repertoire. In open farmland, enormous roosts of corvids continue their raucous commentary. Rooks and jackdaws join forces in the winter to share information about food sources separating again in February for the breeding season. At night, the tawny owl is active particularly during the full moon. Young birds are reaching maturity and looking for new homes while older birds are fighting on to their patch. Duets may be heard with the female making a ke-witt sound and the male answering with a distinctive hoo-hoo. All along the country lanes, the hedgerows are crowned with the white fluffy seed heads of Old Man’s Beard or Traveller’s Joy. This wild clematis thrives in Hampshire’s chalky soils and the ribbed stalks snake their way through anything in their path. They are the ‘tangled bine stems’ of Thomas Hardy’s famous new year poem, The Darkling Thrush, first published on the 29th December 1900. The Ninth New Year Plant Hunt, organised by the Botanical Society of Great Britain will take place from 1st-4th January 2020. Send any sightings to www.bsbi.org/new-year-plant-hunt Vicky Liddell

COMMUNITY

JOHN BOSWORTH COLLECTION COMES TO BISHOP'S WALTHAM ENTRANCE TO LOWER LANE CAR PARK IN THE 1950S.©PHOTO BY KIND PERMISSION OF BISHOP’S WALTHAM MUSEUM TRUST.

A new community-wide, not-for-profit initiative will be recording an up-to-date set of photographs throughout 2020 for the historic John Bosworth Collection at Bishop’s Waltham Museum. Local history buffs will already know some of the wonderful old images from the late 19th and early 20th century which John Bosworth collected. From 1950-1985, as he went about his professional photographic business, John added his own commentary of images, as the rural village morphed into a thriving market town. Since then, thousands of photos have been taken of Bishop’s Waltham, but very few have found their way to the Museum. WHAT’S CHANGED SINCE 1985? Most change happens slowly and it’s only when we look back that we can see the big differences. 2020 Vision will record everyday life in and around the town through the year. The emphasis is on the everyday: from the Co-op lorry trying to park in the High Street, to new houses springing up on farmland; from

WINTER AFTERNOON RACING AT FONTWELL PARK!

WHAT WILL HAVE GONE BY 2055? With bigger changes and challenges to come over the next 35 years, pondering this question supplies some interesting themes to follow up. Visit www.bishopswaltham2020vision for ideas, sample photos with lots of historical detail, guidance on how and what to take, and of course, to upload your photos.

BEAT THE BLUES RACEDAY: SUNDAY 26TH JANUARY Experience a Raceday at the UK's Only Figure of 8 Jumps Track. Come and beat the January ‘blues’ as 2020 arrives with our winter race day, a great opportunity to gather the family together and get out of the house for an afternoon of jumps. We’ve got seven races running around our unique figure of eight track, which allows a unique view of the action all the way through the race.

IT’S NOT A COMPETITION! Entry is free and open to anyone of any age. Photos can be taken from 1 January 2020 and you can upload up to one image a day throughout the year. If you have any questions then contact the team at photos@ bishopswaltham2020vision.co.uk or keep an eye on www.lovebishopswaltham.com for updates. At the end of 2020, the aim is to donate 1000 images to the John Bosworth Collection. This will benefit Bishop’s Waltham Museum and the wider community for years to come. Whether you are a local resident or trader or an occasional visitor, your photograph could be making history for the future, so when you’re out and about in 2020, don’t forget your camera or mobile! The community project has been generously sponsored by local practice, Clear Dentistry and the Bishop’s Waltham Society. It is endorsed by Bishop’s Waltham Museum Trust, the Town Team, Bishop’s Waltham Parish Council and Winchester City Council. The Bishop’s Waltham Youth Club was established in the village in 2012 and provides an opportunity for young people aged between 11 and 17 to get together on a weekly basis during term time on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening in the Youth Hall. In addition when funding allows, excursions are organized to provide members with experiences that would otherwise not be available to them. Youth Club Leader Linda Jeffcott said: “We are very grateful for this donation from the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team. In rural areas like ours facilities and activities for young people are often a bit limited. Through the donations we receive, we can provide activities in our local community for young people to enjoy”. Town Team member and Chairman of the Bishop’s Waltham Chamber of Trade, Barry Nicholson presented the cheque to the Youth Club at the Youth Hall. He said “We are very pleased to be able to pass on some of the proceeds from Bishop’s Waltham Bites to such a deserving organisation. On behalf of the Town

The Bishop’s Waltham Town Team is a partnership organisation which exists to sustain and future-proof the Bishop’s Waltham Town Centre by developing new markets and uses for it. It promotes and stimulates the town centre’s role as a commercial and social meeting place for all the people in our community and from the villages nearby. The Town Team launched Bishop’s Waltham Bites in October 2016 as an opportunity for ticket holders to sample tasters of what the town’s restaurants, pubs and food outlets have to offer. Since then it has become a very popular event in the town’s calendar with tickets always highly in demand. The next Bishop’s Waltham Bites event will be held on Saturday 25th April 2020 with tickets going on sale about 3 weeks in advance.

THREE CHOIRS VINEYARDS Three Choirs Vineyard is a unique venue that combines rustic styles with a modern touch. You don’t have to be a wine lover or a vineyard expert to get married here, it is all about the love! With exclusive use, the vineyard has a relaxed and friendly vibe making it the perfect place to say your vows and celebrate the beginning of a new married couple. Amid the vines sits the Old Winery barn and Courtyard, beautifully renovated to hold the wedding breakfast and evening reception. With original wooden beams, chandeliers made of vintage crystal cut wine glasses and 10ft oak doors, this room holds the characteristics of the old Winery it once was but is also the perfect canvas to transform for each wedding. The courtyard is also packed full of charm that has everyone enjoying the breath-taking views. It’s now time to reflect on the year of 2019 for the Vineyard and plan for the next, 2020. They have had such an amazingly busy year, shared over 40 of the most special days with their couples and how fabulous they all were, they said, with everyone being different from the one before, due to the individual flair of each bride. They understand that living in England we are not guaranteed good weather, so they have The Vine Room, a newly refurbished indoor ceremony space, so there’s no need to stress about the weather. It was commented “it’s such a beautiful room, it shouldn’t be a second choice” Now as their season draws to a close the clean down has started and the sprucing begins! They are very much looking forward to 2020 to see what over 50 weddings have in store for them. This year they will have available their very own onsite accommodation right from the start of the year. With its beautiful Bridal Prep area with enough space for the Bride plus all her helpers and Bridesmaids to take their time in having their hair manipulated into beautiful works of art, and marvellous make up artists working their magic! Then its just one skip and a jump to the ceremony where they can say “I do” to their handsome prince charming. The Vineyard are also very excited to announce that Exquisite Catering will be joining them as their new caterers. Exquisite Catering have come together as our sole caterers for the Vineyard. They have a team of chefs and assistants who have together over 50 years of experience, who love their jobs and have a very keen eye for detail. They also believe as do the Vineyard, that every wedding is unique and therefore should be tailored for each bride and groom. They will work closely with the Vineyard to make sure every wedding day goes seamlessly. They have been providing fabulous food for The Old Mill Restaurant in Botley, a little village close to the Vineyard, for the last few years. You can view their excellent 5* reviews on Trip Advisor where they are voted the top restaurant in Botley and the 14th restaurant in Southampton. www.vineyard-weddings.co.uk
